After suffering for years from chronic pain due to intense migraines and fibromyalgia, [cannabis allowed me to stop using narcotics](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/how-we-can-disrupt-the-opioid-epidemic-with-cannabis). Those traditional pharmaceuticals didn’t provide much benefit other than occasionally masking the pain. Once I turned to cannabis, I found a solution that not only prevented my chronic pain but also helped me manage pain when it crawled through. Once I realized cannabis was a possible solution for me, I began experimenting and eventually found that microdosing was my path to success.\n\n![Hello6-min (6).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello6_min_6_6f0daaad5e.png)\n\n### Microdosing Cannabis as Effective Pain Relief\n\nWhen many people talk about microdosing, they mean taking small amounts of cannabis, waiting to feel the effects, and then taking more until you reach your desired result. The microdosing I want to talk about is taking small amounts of cannabis on a consistent basis to receive health benefits without the psychoactive effect.\n\nRespected cannabis doctor [Dr. Dustin Sulak noted substantial anecdotal evidence](https://www.projectcbd.org/sobre-cbd/clinical-research/dr-dustin-sulak-cannabis-dosing) within his practice over a period of years with microdosing. He said in a recent article, “*I discovered that most people have a certain threshold dosage of cannabis, below which they’ll actually experience a gradual increase in health benefits over time, and above which they’ll start building tolerance, experiencing diminishing benefits, and more side effects.*”\n\nAs with so much within the cannabis community, we depend upon anecdotal evidence as clinical research is scarce due to marijuana’s classification as a [Schedule 1 drug](https://www.dea.gov/drug-information/drug-scheduling#:~:text=Schedule%20I%20drugs%2C%20substances%2C%20or,). However, a recent [study conducted by University of California, San Diego, demonstrated positive results with microdosing](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3566631/). The study focused on subjects suffering from neuropathic pain and had them microdose through vaping. The results indicated that the patients who microdosed cannabis at 1.29% felt as much pain relief as the patients who used a medium dose at 3.53% cannabis. Those who microdosed less also felt better for a longer period of time than participants who ingested more.\n\n![Hello1.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_63481b85e9.png)\n\n### Lower Doses of THC May Enhance the Endocannabinoid System\n\nWhat’s most interesting about this study is its contrast with the average amount of [tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/thc) found in most vape pens or joints, which often stand at 14% and may even go as high as 95%. The amount of THC used within microdosing is substantially lower than what most consumers ingest in a typical sitting. Some hypothesize that microdosing on a consistent basis results in more positive benefits than higher doses because lower doses of cannabis enhance the [endocannabinoid system](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system) while much larger doses make our CB1 and CB2 receptors—the receptors that control appetite, pain, mood, and memoryless responsive. \n\n![Hello3.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello3_de8707650f.png)\n\n### My Personal CBD Microdosing Regimen\n\nMy version of microdosing includes a daily dose of tinctures high in [cannabidiol (CBD)](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/cbd); I like a ratio of 20:1 CBD to THC. I also use a low-dose tincture with 2.5 mg of THC per dose as many as two to three times a day. \n\nSince these THC doses are incredibly low, I never feel high, if anything, I just feel mildly relaxed. When a migraine does manage to sneak through, which is now rare, I vape a high-CBD pen of any one of the strains [Canna Tsu](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/canna-tsu), [ACDC](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/acdc), or [Harlequin](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/harlequin/). These strains contain around 20% CBD to 5% THC. Again, my goal is to manage pain and not get high, and without a doubt, I reach my goal. \n\nMicrodosing allows me to live a very full life, prevent chronic conditions, and manage pain when it happens. Without cannabis and this regime, I would be in bed for multiple days a month. Now I’m not dependent on narcotics, and I’m able to be far more functional across the board.\n\n![Hello5-min (6).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello5_min_6_18167593eb.png)\n\n### Microdosing Is Perfect for Newcomers & Seniors\n\nI feel that microdosing is the way to go for all newcomers to cannabis, as well as the fastest-growing group of medicinal marijuana users: senior citizens. These new consumers are faced with a confusing and disaggregated system. When walking into a typical dispensary, you’ll often come face to face with a 20-something budtender who might suggest an Indica gummy bear that contains 100 mg of THC, a chocolate bar with 1,000 mg, or a vape oil cartridge with a whopping 95% THC. Oftentimes, this is a recipe for disaster for the new patient.\n\n![Hello6-min (5).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello6_min_5_5d7926c2dd.png)\n\n### The Marijuana Market Needs to Catch Up\n\nUnfortunately, the cannabis marketplace is more focused on recreational consumers and hasn’t caught up with those of us using cannabis as medicine. What we need is a plethora of products that are between 2.5-5 mg per dose, whether that be a tincture, edibles, sublingual spray, or high CBD/low THC vape oil cartridges. \n\nThe bottom line is that the market has yet to catch up with consumer trends. My hope is that innovative manufacturers continue to release new products that address the new groups using medicinal marijuana, as well as the anecdotal and research-based evidence that supports microdosing cannabis.\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/cannabis-101) posts.\n\n### Get Your Medical Document & Purchase Medical Cannabis\n\nIt's easy to get your medical document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://www.hellomd.com/get-started/). A few decades ago, a typical cannabis flower had a THC content of about 4 percent, but today's commercial cannabis strains can contain 15 percent or more, with some products boasting THC levels of more than 30 percent. That's a considerable jump in potency from yesteryear! \n\n[Increasingly potent strains](https://www.mjfactcheck.org/potency#:~:text=WHAT%20WE%20KNOW%3A%20Marijuana%20potency,and%20up%20to%2090%25%20THC.) may delight advanced consumers, but they can also drive away many of today's cannabis newbies – a rapidly growing group of new consumers. Now, the cannabis industry is responding with naturally low-THC cannabis strains and products that support effects like productivity, wellness, and health.\n\n![Low THC products are now available](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_04_26_at_4_42_53_PM_646cb2525a.png)\n\n### THC: A Medicinal and Recreational Cannabinoid\n\nThe cannabis Sativa plant contains over a hundred distinct [cannabinoids](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/the-10-cannabinoids-in-cannabis-you-should-know) and [terpenes](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-terpenes-pack-a-therapeutic-punch), all of which define the profile of a particular strain. \n\nScience is still discovering the properties of many cannabis compounds, but of them all, THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) is the most thoroughly studied for [its unique psychoactive effect](https://www.insider.com/what-is-thc)\n– the ability to create a sense of euphoria and relaxation, creating the famous \"high\".\n\n![Cannabis is now being bred to be low THC](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_04_26_at_4_44_01_PM_e08fb36aee.png)\n\nDelta-9 THC is the only cannabinoid with a molecular structure capable of producing its well-known psychoactive effects. That's because THC binds to the [CB1 endocannabinoid receptor in the brain](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system), which triggers responses in the brain's pathways for pleasure, reward, and pain signaling. \n\nTHC is responsible for the recreational enjoyment of cannabis, but it can also have some potential health benefits. THC can help to boost focus and concentration, [relieve pain](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/how-cannabis-helps-reduce-chronic-pain) and reduce nausea caused by chemotherapy. \n\nSome research suggests it can also protect neural pathways in the brain after trauma or injury and [help to control seizures](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/epilepsy-relief-possible-through-medical-cannabis) in certain forms of epilepsy. \n\nTHC may also reduce muscle spasms in people with multiple sclerosis and other diseases of the central nervous system. In high amounts, though, THC can cause anxiety and paranoia, confusion, or a rapid heartbeat. \n\n### High or Low: Why THC Content Matters\n\nThe [THC content]( https://area52.com/how-much-thc-is-in-weed/)\nof a cannabis strain depends on many factors, including the THC levels of its parent strains and even the planting or harvesting time. Processing affects a product's content of THC and other compounds, too, and so does the size of a specific dose. These and other variables can make it hard to determine whether a particular strain or product is high or low in THC.\n\n![Low THC products have considerable benefits](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_04_26_at_4_45_41_PM_88c43b99e4.png)\n\nAs a rule, a strain or product is considered low THC when it is at 10 percent THC content or less. High-THC cannabis typically contains 20 to 30 percent, but very high THC products can include even more.\n\nBecause of the variation in strains and other factors, it's not always easy to determine [how much THC is in a typical joint](https://www.hellomd.com/questions-and-answers/how-many-milligrams-of-thc-are-in-a-typical-joint#:~:text=The%20average%20THC%20concentration%20in,bottom%20line%20is%2C%20a%20lot!), but it can range from as low as 4 percent to 20 percent or more. Cannabis edibles typically contain between 5 and 15 mg THC per serving, while tinctures can range between 2.5 mg and 20 mg or more per dose. \n\n### THC vs. CBD: A Balancing Act\nCannabis products that contain significant amounts of THC are the target of legislation that still considers cannabis a dangerous, addictive substance on par with heroin. But cannabis products derived from hemp contain negligible amounts of THC, at or below the federally established level of 0.3 percent. \n\n![Hemp is low in THC naturally](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_04_26_at_4_46_40_PM_cf51f35d0c.png)\n\nHemp products are high in CBD, or cannabidiol – a non-psychoactive cannabis compound with a long list of documented health benefits that include relief from pain, anxiety, and [insomnia](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/3-cbd-products-to-help-you-go-back-to-sleep). CBD oil and other products contain virtually no THC, so they're exempt from regulations on full-spectrum cannabis products and cannabis flower. Due to this, hemp may be sold nearly everywhere or even ordered online.\n\nCBD can also work alongside THC to blunt its psychoactive properties. Because CBD can inhibit the effects of THC on the brain's CB1 receptor, it can help to reduce the anxiety and paranoia that can come from taking in too much THC. High CBD, low THC products, or those that contain an equal measure of both, can offer the health benefits of THC without an intense high.\n\n### Why Go Low THC?\n\nAs the cannabis culture expands, people are discovering that THC can have benefits beyond that famous high – and lower amounts can work to boost mental and physical well-being without impairing normal functioning. At \"sub-perceptual\" levels, THC appears to increase mental clarity and focus, improve productivity and creativity, and even improve social skills. \n\n![Hello1-min (7).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_7_b010be192e.png)\n\n\nOne way to get those benefits is through [microdosing](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/microdosing-the-big-new-trend) – taking very small amounts for benefits, including better focus and concentration, relief from anxiety, and improved overall well-being. \n\nWith microdosing, the [effects of THC](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/microdosing-a-better-way-to-take-cannabis) are subtle and don't interfere with daily activities.\n\nLow-THC cannabis products can include tinctures, lozenges, and a variety of edibles such as candies, gummies, and beverages. But smokable cannabis flower and related products typically contain high levels of THC. \n\nVisionary cannabis companies such as Country are now producing cannabis strains specially bred for low THC content. Leading the way is [California-based Country Cannabis](https://www.countryranch.com/), which specializes in \"light\" cannabis flower products under its Good Neighbor label. [Microdosing](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/microdosing) – taking very small, “**sub-therapeutic**” amounts of psychedelic substances like marijuana – is gaining popularity among patients as a way to reap the very potent health benefits of marijuana’s famous psychoactive compound without the inconvenient effects of its usual high. \n\n![Hello2.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello2_92211bf912.png)\n\n### What is Microdosing?\n\nMicrodosing originated in the world of pharmaceutical testing to describe a way to study the effects of new drugs by first administering them in sub-therapeutic, or sub-threshold, amounts so low that they wouldn’t produce the whole body effect of a full dose, but high enough that a cellular response could be observed. But in recent years, microdosing has gone mainstream in a very specific way – referring not to pharmaceutical trials but to the \n[practice](https://www.theverge.com/2017/4/24/15403644/microdosing-lsd-acid-productivity-benefits-brain-studies) of using sub-threshold amounts of psychedelics for better focus, a brighter mood, and more energy.\n\nPsychologist and psychedelic experimenter [James Fadiman](https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/gv5p5y/a-brief-history-of-microdosing) first introduced microdosing in the psychedelic sense to the popular imagination in 2011, when he released the results of data collected from a group of users who reported their experiences with taking very small amounts of LSD every fourth day for a month. Most respondents submitted positive stories about things like taking on new challenges at work, being more present in relationships, and getting more done in a day.\n\nSince then, the number of microdosers has steadily been growing, whether it be with cannabis or other forms of psychedelics. Micro dosers [range](http://www.esquire.com/lifestyle/money/a51756/lsd-microdosing/) from tech types in the fiercely competitive world of Silicon Valley startups to people of all kinds looking for ways to feel less depressed, more alert, and more productive. And while Fadiman’s research focused heavily on people who microdose LSD, the same process can be used for other kinds of psychedelic substances, such as[ psilocybin](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-psilocybin-psychedelics-101), the psychoactive compound in some types of mushrooms – and cannabis.\n\n![Hello3.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello3_de8707650f.png)\n\n### How Does Microdosing Work?\n\nMicrodosing dosages varies from person to person so it does require some trial and error. Most information on how much of a substance to take, how often, and in what form comes from anecdotal reports like Fadiman’s study and online communities and websites where people share insights from their own experimentation. The limited [research data](http://www.businessinsider.com/microdosing-lsd-effects-risks-science-2017-6) on this kind of microdosing is largely due to tight federal restrictions on the use of any of these kinds of substances for studies on their medical applications. \n\nAlong with heroin, [LSD](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-lsd-psychedelics-101), psilocybin and cannabis are classified as [Schedule I controlled](https://www.dea.gov/drug-information/drug-scheduling) substances by the US Drug Enforcement Administration, which calls them highly addictive and lacking in medical benefits. That means that not only are there no federal funds to support rigorous studies, but also that pharmaceutical grade versions of these substances are difficult to come by. That means specific information on microdosing typically comes from personal practice – and that advice may not be safe or reliable.\n\nStill, microdosing is widely practiced for reasons ranging from being more competitive at work to managing pain from a variety of chronic conditions. And while much of the recent publicity about microdosing has focused on the increasing popularity of using LSD this way, microdosing with cannabis may also turn out to be the best way to get some of its [key benefits](https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/the-health-effects-of-marijuana-from-recreational-and-medical-use-2016081910180), especially when THC is involved.\n\n![Hello1.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_63481b85e9.png)\n\n### Why Microdose Cannabis?\n\nMany drugs have very different effects – or even opposite – effects when taken in different amounts – a phenomenon known as the biphasic effect. For psychedelic substances, a “normal” or recreational dose could impair functioning for long periods of time or cause paranoia, excessive anxiety and distortions of reality. Cannabis falls into that category too, thanks to the presence of THC, the psychoactive ingredient that’s abundant in the leaves and buds of the cannabis plant.\n\nIt’s THC that keeps cannabis on the DEA’s Schedule I, and causes the struggle between the justice system and advocates for legalization. But THC is responsible for some of the most potent [health benefits](https://www.leafscience.com/) cannabis can offer. THC binds to the body’s own endocannabinoid receptors, and it can offer potent pain relief, ease the nausea and vomiting of chemotherapy patients, reduce anxiety and lower ocular pressure in glaucoma patients. \n\n![Hello5.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello5_81659d02fd.png)\n\n### Microdosing and the Biphasic Effect\n\nAt higher doses, the psychoactive effects of THC can interfere with its effectiveness, both because it produces that euphoric high favored by recreational users, and also because of the [biphasic effect](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/why-does-cannabis-make-you-feel-good). A microdose dosage with cannabis is typically between 2mg to 5mg, however some people may consider a microdose as much as 10mg of cannabis.\n\nThat effect explains why small doses of cannabis can be relaxing and even focusing, but in higher doses it can cause distressing emotions, anxiety and paranoia. In medical usage, some studies reveal that small amounts of THC can reduce pain, but patients taking larger amounts can actually experience more pain. \n\nTo reduce these effects, many cannabis preparations balance THC with the addition of CBD, another common compound that has no psychoactive properties at all. But \n[microdosing](http://www.salon.com/2017/04/29/microdosing-marijuana-what-doctors-say-is-the-best-way-to-consume_partner/) may solve the biphasic dilemma, and make it possible for users to get the full benefits of THC itself without the negative effects of recreational-strength doses.\n\nCannabis can be microdosed in just about any form, but experienced users point out that tinctures, drops and vaping usually work best, because it’s easier to control the precise amount being used. And it’s important to start very small, working gradually just to the point where beneficial effects can be felt, but no farther. \n\nMicrodosing can be effective for all kinds of cannabis uses – pain control, anxiety management, or just plain feeling calmer and more focused. This way of using cannabis and other psychedelic substances is still in its infancy, but both recent research and results reported by users seem to confirm that for good health, a little cannabis may go a very long way.\n\n### Get a Medical Marijuana Card Online\nIt's easy to get your medical marijuana document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://hellomd.com/get-started). Anecdotal reports indicate that many consumers find that they have considerable benefits for mental and physical health. \n\nHere's what you need to know about microdosing psychedelics safely to enhance mental clarity, creativity, and more.\n\n### Psychedelics: From the Underground to the Mainstream\n\nIt isn't clear when people first began to use psychedelic plants and other substances to change their perceptions, but some evidence indicates that the practice is ancient. In modern times, psychedelic substances leaped into public awareness in the drug-fueled days of the 1960s, and they've remained a popular recreational option ever since.\n\n![Untitled15-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled15_min_f950fb257f.png)\n\nNow, though, these substances are moving out of the psychedelic subculture, as [new studies reveal ](https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0211023) that consuming them at very low, or \"sub-perceptual\" amounts produce positive outcomes without psychoactive effects. \n\nThe modern microdosing trend has its roots in James Fadiman's 2011 book The Psychedelic Explorer'sExplorer's Guide: Safe, Therapeutic and Sacred Journeys. In it, Fadiman explored the concept of microdosing for healing and spiritual benefits.\n\nNow, researchers across the globe have begun to take a closer look at the effects of tiny doses of these mind-altering substances. And they've discovered that [microdosing at levels below psychoactivity](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/microdosing-the-big-new-trend) can affect the Brain in many surprising and beneficial ways.\n\n### How Does Microdosing Work?\n\nAt high or \"standard\" doses, psychedelics alter consciousness in a multitude of ways. \n\n![Tab of LSD cut up into a microdose](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_04_07_at_1_03_12_PM_81f64861fd.png)\n\nFrom the euphoric high of THC-powered cannabis to the hallucinations and dissolving sense of self in LSD or mushroom trips, these substances can change the way people perceive the world and themselves. But that kind of experience can also interfere with daily living.\n\nMicrodosing psychedelics triggers activity in [key areas of the brain](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/exploring-mind-bending-psychedelics-psilocybin-and-lsd) but at levels well below the amounts that typically trigger psychoactivity. The result boosts well-being for many users, including relief from anxiety and depression, enhanced creativity and focus, and improved relationships. Some users also say that microdosing can reduce migraine and relieve pain.\n\nBut microdosing also has its downsides. Not everyone can tolerate psychedelics, even in small doses. Microdosing these substances can cause visual disturbances, insomnia, digestive problems, and problems concentrating. Other side effects can include numbness and tingling in fingers and toes, anxiety, or depression.\n\n### Psychedelics Activate Pathways in the Brain\n\nLSD, cannabis, and psilocybin top the list of psychedelic substances used for microdosing, thanks to their ability to mimic substances naturally produced by the body.\n\n![Psychedelics alter pathways in the brain](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_04_07_at_1_04_06_PM_c2481d1139.png)\n\nLSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) is a long-lasting psychedelic that produces vivid hallucinations and other altered perceptions. It [binds to cell receptors in the brain](https://www.nih.gov/news-events/nih-research-matters/protein-structure-reveals-how-lsd-affects-brain#:~:text=Lysergic%20acid%20diethylamide%2C%20or%20LSD,been%20cleared%20from%20the%20bloodstream) that respond to serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps cells communicate. Serotonin has also been called the \"feel-good chemical\" for its ability to reduce anxiety and boost mood. LSD can also activate receptors related to sensory processing and cognition.\n\nPsilocybin is a chemical compound present in certain types of mushrooms. Like LSD, [psilocybin affects serotonin receptors in the brain](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-athletes-way/201811/is-your-brain-microdoses-psilocybin). But along with boosting the flow of serotonin, \n\"magic mushrooms\" also appear to destabilize existing neural networks and even create new ones. That accounts for expanding consciousness and new ways of thinking that people experience when they use psilocybin.\n\n![Cannabis can be a great way to microdose](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_04_07_at_1_05_17_PM_153ae1727d.png)\n\nCannabis contains THC (delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol), which causes its famous \"high.\" THC [mimics the activity of anandamide](https://nida.nih.gov/publications/research-reports/marijuana/how-does-marijuana-produce-its-effects), a cannabinoid chemical similar to serotonin that's naturally produced by the body. THC binds to the same cannabinoid receptors in the brain, triggering activity on various pathways, including those related to mood, pleasure/reward, and cognition. \n\nResearchers believe that when they're taken in tiny sub-perceptual doses, these psychedelics stimulate activity in the brain's pathways for cognition, mood, and pleasure, opening new avenues for thinking and perceiving without causing impairment. Microdosing holds promise for treating diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimers and relieving the symptoms of PTSD and other mental health conditions.\n\n### How to Microdose Safely\n\nAlthough there's increasing evidence for the benefits of microdosing, it's important to do so safely. \n\nHere are a few [things to keep in mind]( https://microdosinginstitute.com/how-to/microdosing-protocols/).\n\n#### Be aware of legal issues\nCannabis is legal in many areas, so it's relatively easy to find cannabis products in varying strengths and forms. But LSD and psilocybin remain illegal in the US, with stiff penalties for possession of these and other psychedelic substances. In some counties and cities, such as Oakland, CA or Denver, CO, within the US, psychedelics are decriminalized, which means it is unlikely you will be prosecuted with small amounts within your personal possession.\n\n#### Seek out quality products from reputable sources\n\nChoose products produced without harmful additives or processing, and look for clear statements about a product's contents, origin and potency whenever possible.\n\n![Psilocybin ](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_04_07_at_1_08_04_PM_d35331777f.png)\n\n\n#### Keep in mind that psychedelics can vary considerably in form and content\nCannabis can be smoked, vaped, eaten, or consumed as a tincture, and these methods are not equally suitable for microdosing. Psilocybin mushrooms can contain varying amounts of psilocybin, and LSD may not be equally distributed on a tab of paper.\n\n#### Start with a low dose\nIt can take some time to find the best dose for your needs, so start with a low dose and adjust accordingly as you observe your reactions.\n\n#### Dose consistently\nTake steps to ensure that each dose contains the same amount of your chosen psychedelic. For LSD, where the chemical may not be evenly distributed, a method like volumetric dilution can keep doses consistent. For cannabis, low-dose edibles such as chocolates or capsules can make it easy to get the right dose every time. For psilocybin, use a standard measure for placing ground or powdered mushrooms into capsules.\n\n![Vaping cannabis](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_04_07_at_1_10_15_PM_0b7de5b0a1.png)\n\n#### Maintain a dosing protocol\n\nMicrodosing experts recommend starting with the lowest possible dose on a regular schedule, typically one out of three days. Microdosing is supposed to give you positive effects without the psychoactive effects you could feel at higher doses. In this sense, I don't know if microdosing w/ CBD applies at all. \n\nFor your tincture...there is no set dose per person. After a quick search of your product online, it looks like 1 drop = 1mg CBD. Keep in mind that you might not feel anything right away. I've interviewed many patients & experts on CBD dosing, and those who see the best results take their CBD tincture every day--think of it as a vitamin. These folks have all said that it takes about 1 month to build up in your system. I'm not a doctor, but if I was trying to figure out a dosing routine for myself, I'd do at least 5mg CBD 2 to 3 times a day for at least 3 days and then reassess. If I didn't notice a difference, I would opt for a different tincture or a higher dose. \n\nDanielle L.","childMarkdownRemark":{"excerpt":"\"I am just starting to experiment with CBD. Help","content":"May is **National Lyme Disease Month**. It’s a time to [learn more](https://www.cdc.gov/lyme/index.html) about a disease that affects more than 300,000 Americans each year with symptoms including fatigue, rash, and body aches. [National Lyme Disease Month](https://nationaltoday.com/national-lyme-disease-awareness-month/) spotlights Lyme disease causes, prevention, and treatments – but it’s also a time to take a look at the many ways cannabis can help to relieve the discomforts of this common tick-borne condition. \n\n![Hello2-min (47).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello2_min_47_a48111b063.png)\n\n### What is Lyme Disease?\nLyme Disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States. It’s caused by either of two bacteria strains, *Borrellia burgdorferi* or *Borrellia mayorii*, which are carried by a species of tick called the black-legged tick or deer tick. Lyme Disease occurs most often in the Northeast, Upper Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic parts of the country, where conditions are damp and grasses grow tall in summer, but it’s been reported in all 50 states, including the dry desert Southwest.\n\nOnly the deer tick carries the bacteria that cause Lyme disease, but not every deer tick bite transmits it. Ticks cling to the skin and burrow into it, and the longer a deer tick remains attached to the body, the greater the risk for Lyme disease. That’s why health professionals recommend carefully checking for ticks after any outdoor activity during tick season.\n\nLyme disease symptoms typically appear between 3 and 30 days after the *Borrellia bacterium* enters the bloodstream, and [they can include](https://www.cdc.gov/lyme/signs_symptoms/index.html):\n\n- Flu-like symptoms such as fever, fatigue, and body aches\n- Headache\n- A distinctive skin rash called erythema migrans, which can appear in various areas of the body\n\n![Hello8-min (8).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello8_min_8_027309e5da.png)\n\nIf Lyme disease is untreated, more serious symptoms can appear, including neck stiffness, facial palsy, and arthritis. The erythema migrans rash can also spread or appear in more locations.\n\nThere are no specific tests for Lyme disease, so it’s usually diagnosed by symptoms, a recent activity that might include exposure to ticks, and general blood tests revealing the presence of certain antibodies. Once diagnosed, Lyme disease is usually treated for two to four weeks course of antibiotics.\n\nFor some people, symptoms can persist for weeks or months after Lyme disease treatment – a condition called [Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome, or [PTLDS](https://www.cdc.gov/lyme/postlds/index.html ). Others may experience Lyme disease symptoms indefinitely, known as [chronic Lyme disease](https://www.niaid.nih.gov/diseases-conditions/chronic-lyme-disease). \n\nCurrently, there’s no proven treatment for PTLDS or chronic Lyme disease since long-term use of antibiotics can lead to some serious complications. But some research suggests that [cannabis can help](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/could-lyme-disease-patients-find-relief-with-medical-marijuana) to relieve the symptoms of Lyme disease and PTLDS without the side effects and risks of pharmaceuticals.\n\n![Hello3-min (37).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello3_min_37_70b4240b45.png)\n\n### Cannabis Provides Natural Relief for Lyme Disease Symptoms\nCannabis isn’t a cure for Lyme disease, but it shows promise for relieving its symptoms. A growing body of research reveals that cannabis has considerable anti-inflammatory and analgesic or pain-relieving properties. It’s also a powerful neuroprotectant, capable of supporting neural pathways in the brain and central nervous system. That’s because cannabis in all its forms activates responses in the body’s [endocannabinoid system](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system), a network of cell receptors that respond to cannabis compounds in ways similar to cannabinoid chemicals naturally produced by the tissues. \n\nCannabis compounds such as [THC](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/thc) (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) and [CBD](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/cbd) (cannabidiol) can activate pathways in the brain and central nervous system that are related to pain signaling and immune responses, which can help to relieve the discomforts of Lyme disease. According to [LymeDisease.org](https://www.lymedisease.org/), an education and advocacy group for those living with Lyme disease, [these properties](https://www.lymedisease.org/med-marijuana-lyme-kinderlehrer/) make cannabis “very valuable as an adjunct to treatment of tick-borne diseases.”\n\n### Products and Strains for Symptom Relief\nWhether you prefer to smoke, vape, or consume your cannabis another way, there’s a cannabis product that can help to relieve the symptoms of Lyme disease, such as [pain](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/the-best-cannabis-strains-for-chronic-pain) and inflammation. [*Psilocybe cubensis*](https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psilocybe_cubensis) is the most well-known species and the only one legalized in Oregon for now. \n\nWhen consumed, psilocybin has psychedelic effects, including euphoria, visual and mental hallucinations, a distorted sense of time, and sometimes [synesthesia](https://www.webmd.com/brain/what-is-synesthesia#:~:text=Synesthesia%20is%20when%20you%20hear,street%22%20and%20taste%20citrus%20fruit.). Many people describe mystical experiences that include powerful positive emotions and a feeling of [connection with the universe, or God](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6478303/). \n\n![Hello7-min (10).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello7_min_10_4fbb661aeb.png)\n\n### Healing with Magic Mushrooms\n\nThe emotional and mystical experience is also the primary source of healing with magic mushrooms. Psilocybin has proven effective in treating [depression](https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/news/newsroom/news-releases/psychedelic-treatment-with-psilocybin-relieves-major-depression-study-shows), [anxiety](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31931272/), [PTSD](https://med.nyu.edu/departments-institutes/population-health/divisions-sections-centers/medical-ethics/education/high-school-bioethics-project/learning-scenarios/ptsd-treatment-psychedelics), [headaches](https://maps.org/news/media/new-york-magazine-psychedelic-mushrooms-cured-my-cluster-headaches/), and [spiritual alienation](https://maps.org/news/media/hopkins-researchers-study-therapeutic-use-of-psilocybin-in-magic-mushr/). There is significant potential for treating [end-of-life anxiety and depression](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5367557/) as a single dose of psilocybin can provide long-term relief of anxiety and depression in cancer patients. According to [Dr. Stephen Ross](https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/28/health/magic-mushrooms-psilocybin-cancer-patients-study-wellness/index.html), associate professor of psychiatry at NYU Langone Health, “psilocybin therapy is a promising means of improving the emotional, psychological, and spiritual well-being of patients with life-threatening cancer.”\n\n![Hello6-min (18).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello6_min_18_b7f33c4bdf.png)\n\n### Psilocybin Therapy in Oregon\n\nOregon voters passed [Measure 109](Oregon votes.org/irr/2020/012text.pdf) in 2020, legalizing the “manufacture, distribution and administration” of psilocybin products. When psilocybin becomes legal in Oregon in 2023, you will not be able to buy magic mushrooms and eat them at home or buy them at a store like cannabis. Instead, psilocybin must be administered by a licensed facilitator in a licensed psilocybin facility.\n\nWith input from the [Oregon Psilocybin Advisory Board](https://www.oregon.gov/oha/PH/PREVENTIONWELLNESS/Pages/Psilocybin-Advisory-Board-Meetings.aspx), the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) has drafted [rules for psilocybin services](https://www.oregon.gov/oha/PH/PREVENTIONWELLNESS/Documents/333-333-Notice-of-Proposed-Rulemaking-03.31.2022.pdf). Though there are [benefits to micro-dosing psilocybin](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6364961/), the guidelines provided by the OHA only cover macro doses at this time.\n\n![Hello3-min (38).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello3_min_38_6479dd0c0c.png)\n\n### Psilocybin Facilitators and Services\n\nAny personal development professional can become a psilocybin facilitator in Oregon - you do not have to be a psychiatrist or psychologist. Training programs for psychedelic practitioners include courses on scientific research, the history of psychedelics, indigenous practices, and the art of holding space. The costs of the training sessions could be a hurdle for many. The Dutch psilocybin retreat company [Synthesis Institute](https://www.synthesisinstitute.com/psychedelic-practitioner-training?hsLang=en) charges $21,500 for their 18-month training program, while the [Navigating Psychedelics program](https://www.psychedeliceducationcenter.com/p/navigating-psychedelics-for-clinicians-and-therapists) by Psychedelics Today costs $12,500 for the year-long training.\n\nPsilocybin therapy will include a sequence of three sessions:\n\n- 1.) A preparation session: the client is briefed on what to expect from the psilocybin trip.\n- 2.) The psilocybin session: the client consumes psilocybin and experiences a psychedelic journey that lasts several hours.\n- 3.) An integration session: the client talks through the experience with the facilitator to make sense of what they experienced.\n\nOutside of these guidelines, there is leeway for individual facilitators to make the sessions unique based on their expertise.\n\n![Hello1-min (48).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_48_8e3df05299.png)\n\n### Affordability and Equity in Psychedelics\n\nIf it sounds like psilocybin therapy is going to be expensive, it is. At least to start. Sessions won’t likely be covered by health insurance. And the tax liability will drive costs up as it did with legal cannabis. But there is still hope for accessibility. Equity groups like the [Fruiting Bodies Collective](https://www.fruitingbodiescollective.com/) are serving on the Oregon Psilocybin Advisory Board to help get community needs met for people of all backgrounds. And the Measure 109 rules can be edited, so we can expect to see changes over the years. \n\n![Hello2-min (46).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello2_min_46_af029019aa.png)\n\n### So When Can I Take Magic Mushrooms?\n\nProduction and facilitator groups can start applying for licenses on January 2, 2023, and the first psilocybin therapy appointments will probably be booked around mid-2023. \n\n### Get Your Medical Document & Purchase Medical Cannabis\n\nIt’s easy to get your medical document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://hellomd.com/get-started). Female cannabis plants are prized for their [abundant, psychoactive flower](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/how-to-buy-flower), and feminized seeds produce potent, high-yield cannabis crops. Male plants are often simply thrown away. But the male marijuana plant [has plenty to offer](https://infinitecal.com/2020/01/15/male-vs-female-cannabis-why-its-important-to-know-before-you-grow/) in its own right – and it plays a vital if often overlooked, role in breeding the many [cannabis strains](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-indica-sativa-and-hybrid-explained) available today.\n\n![Hello6-min (17).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello6_min_17_3c35ad9930.png)\n\n### What’s the Problem with Males?\nCannabis cultivators want to get the highest return on their investment of resources and time, and [male plants can interfere](https://leafwell.com/blog/the-importance-of-male-cannabis-plants/) with those goals. They take up space and consume water and nutrients without contributing to the harvest, and they can pollinate any female plants in the vicinity, which can derail breeding programs.\n\nLikewise, it’s widely thought that male plants don’t contain significant amounts of highly desirable compounds like [THC](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/thc) and [CBD](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/cbd), so they can’t make much of a contribution to commercial cannabis cultivation. There’s some truth to all of these things, but the [benefits of keeping male plants](https://sensiseeds.com/en/blog/male-cannabis-plants-7-things-to-do-with-males/) can considerably outweigh these negatives. \n\n![Hello1-min (45).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_45_9060570d5a.png)\n\n### Male Plants Keep the Gene Pool Strong\nCannabis Sativa is one of a handful of plant species that are dioecious or have distinct male and female features. Many other plants have both male and female characteristics in the same plant so that they can self-pollinate. Cannabis plants can self-pollinate, too, in a process called feminization. That forces plants to keep the characteristics of a specific female plant through successive generations. But it also eliminates input from the male side of the genetic equation. Over time the lack of new genetic material causes a weakened, inbred gene pool that leaves plants more vulnerable to pests, chemicals, and other environmental threats.\n\nMale plants add variety and vigor to any cannabis strain. Their genetic contribution offers many more characteristics to select for, such as growth rate, hardiness, and the presence and amount of various [cannabinoids](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabinoids-chemical-compounds-with-huge-therapeutic-potential) and terpenes. Mixing and matching those features leads to the astonishing variety of cannabis strains available today.\n\n![Hello4-min (34).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello4_min_34_60f574be1a.png)\n\n### Males Can Drive Away Pests\nEven if they aren’t used to pollinate females, male cannabis plants make good “companion” plants for their own and even other plant species. Like their female counterparts, male cannabis plants produce [terpenes](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-are-terpenes-and-what-is-their-effect) that are responsible for the [unique scents and flavors](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-makes-each-marijuana-strain-unique) of each cannabis strain. Some terpenes, such as limonene and pinene, have strong scents that can repel insects both above and below ground, such as weevils and nematodes. In that way, male cannabis plants can help to protect surrounding plants of all kinds, even crops like cotton, from damage or contamination. \n\n![Hello7-min (9).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello7_min_9_86c0ead9ad.png)\n\n### Male Plants Enable Seed Production\nAlthough cannabis cultivators prefer their female plants to direct all their energy toward producing flowers, not seeds, those seeds are essential to keeping the various strains alive and moving forward. And the pollen from male plants is needed to produce those seeds, which can be used to plant another crop or sold to amateur and professional growers anywhere in the world. \n\n![Hello5-min (25).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello5_min_25_a7bea4d1b2.png)\n\n### Males Also Contain Cannabinoids\nIn female plants, [cannabinoids like THC and CBD](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/the-10-cannabinoids-in-cannabis-you-should-know) are concentrated in the flower, but in male plants, they’re concentrated in the leaves. Although female flower contains higher amounts of cannabinoids, that doesn’t mean males are lacking in potency. They contribute half the genetic material for any offspring, so their cannabinoid profile can play a major part in developing the profile of a new strain. For example, crossing a male plant that’s high in CBD with a female that also contains high CBD would create plants with a reliably high concentration of CBD.\n\n![Hello8-min (7).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello8_min_7_4574290b2a.png)\n\n### How To Identify a Male Plant\nIn the earliest stages of growth, it’s impossible to distinguish between male and female cannabis plants. But once they’re past the vegetative stage – the period between germination and flowering – you can begin to look for “pre-flowers” on your plants. These early signs of a male plant appear at the nodes, or joints, of maturing plants, especially near the top of the plant. Male plants have small sacs, while female plants have hairs or pistils in the same place. Male plants also typically have fewer leaves and thicker stalks than females.\n\nFemale cannabis plants are valued for their potent flower and rich cannabinoid and terpene content, but those things wouldn’t be possible without male plants. Whether you’re [growing your own cannabis at home](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/a-beginners-guide-to-growing-marijuana-at-home) or a commercial breeder working to develop new strains, males have an essential role to play.\n\n### Get a Medical Marijuana Card Online\nIt's easy to get your medical marijuana document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://hellomd.com/get-started).
