However, recent research suggests that people with SAD regulate serotonin differently in comparison to others. In a 2016 study, researchers found that those with SAD had increased Serotonin Transporter (SERT or 5-HTT) activity during the autumn and winter months in comparison to those without SAD.  SERT carries serotonin back into the presynaptic neurons where it lies dormant; thus, higher SERT activity results in lower amounts of serotonin available to bind the postsynaptic-subtype of serotonin receptor (5-HT1A) responsible for serotonin's anti-depressant effects. \nhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27087270\n\nRestoring activity in serotonin pathways—by increasing the serotonin available to bind the 5-HT1A receptor in the brain—is how SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) are thought to alleviate anxiety and depression. In fact, SSRIs do so by inhibiting the aforementioned Serotonin Transporter (SERT or 5-HTT). \n\ndrkim\n_____________________\nIndeed, several recently published studies suggest that CBD reduces depression and anxiety symptoms similarly to the way SSRIs do. However, CBD does so, not by increasing the serotonin available to bind 5-HT1A receptors as SSRIs do, but by mimicking serotonin's action at the 5-HT1A receptor; or, in scientific terms: CBD is a 5-HT1A receptor agonist. \nhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1625885\nhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24923339\nhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26711860\n\nFor most patients, I recommend taking 10 to 20 milligrams of CBD, two to three times per day, in addition to phototherapy. They found that \"both cannabinoids potentiated the extinction of cocaine- and amphetamine-induced place preference learning\" in rats. \n\nIn order to reach that conclusion, they administered amphetamine to rats in one specific area of their cage until the rat was conditioned to prefer that area regardless (conditioned place preference). They then compared the time it took for the rat to no longer prefer the conditioned area (extinction) when administered either CBD, THC or saline. They found that both CBD and THC shortened the time to extinction of the conditioned place preference.\n\nThey also determined that the shortened extinction time involved neither the cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1), nor the cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2). The psychoactive effects of cannabis occur when THC binds the CB1 receptor in the brain; CBD does not directly bind either receptor—which is why CBD consumption does not lead to psychoactivity. \nhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15138755/\n\nHowever, CBD does interact with the serotonin receptor (5-HT1A)—which is central to the etiology of both depression and anxiety; hence, the use of SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) as a first line treatment for both conditions. Similarly, pre-clinical studies suggest that CBD's antidepressant and anxiolytic effects are at least partially derived from CBD's interaction with the 5-HT1A receptor. \n\nhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24923339\nhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26711860\nhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16258853\n\nThe serotonin (5-HT1A) receptor is also fundamental \"to virtually all behaviors associated with psychostimulant addiction.\" When amphetamines bind the serotonin receptor, serotonin floods into an area called the \"synapse\" of the serotonin receptor; the serotonin can then bind the \"postsynaptic\" area of the serotonin receptor, setting off a series of molecular events which—in combination with a concurrent flood of dopamine—lead to feelings of euphoria (among other emotional and physical responses). The increase in serotonin—in addition to dopamine—is a core mechanism of action for drug addiction.\nhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17316955\n\nTogether, pre-clinical studies suggest that CBD's interaction with the serotonin (5HT1A) receptor is the common-causative molecular event necessary for CBD to impart its anxiolytic, anti-depressant and addiction-intervening properties. \n\nI can't say which CBD oil is best, but I recommend what to look for:\n1. After 10 days of treatment, the patient's OCD symptoms were significantly reduced—Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive scale prior to treatment was 20, post-treatment the score was 10.\n\nThe second patient was a 36-year-old man with schizophrenia and severe OCD. He was treated with several antipsychotics and SSRIs, his OCD symptoms did not respond. He was switched to clomipramine, followed by 18 (!) rounds of electroconvulsive therapy—still, not much improvement. The patient was then given 2.5mg of Marinol once/day in order to prevent an exacerbation of his psychosis (schizophrenic), which was then increased to 2.5mg of Marinol twice/day.  His Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale score was reduced from 23 to 15. \nhttps://ajp.psychiatryonline.org/doi/full/10.1176/appi.ajp.2007.07061016\n\n\n\ndrkim\n_____________________\nIn order to mimic the above treatment protocols, I recommend Petra Mints, which, like the protocols above, contain 2.5mg of THC each.\nTake one mint two to three times/day. \nhttps://www.hellomd.com/products/5859dbd3eafa6f00086850ae/petra-mints\n\nI hope this helps!\n\n\ndrkim","image":null}},{"node":{"id":"Question_12283-markdown","title":"Can CBD effect ED?","slug":"can-cbd-effect-ed","content":"\"@tomejd \"\n_____________________\nHi there!\nNeither CBD nor THC would not help much with erectile dysfunction related to impaired penile blood flow (like Cialis or Viagra do). \nHowever, if performance anxiety is the issue, CBD might help some.
