So I will give you my insights and advice, but please know that cannabis works differently for everyone and there is no one-size-fits-all.\n\nImitrex is a drug that really was my last resort and had stopped working, for many different reasons. Due to that I began using vicodin to deal with the pain. Cannabis has essentially stopped my migraines.\n\nMy regime consists of 2-3x a day daily dosing of CBD. I love Moxie Meds 4:1 tincture and at a half a dropper it is never psychoactive. I also take a 20:1 CBD tincture one time a day in the morning, a full dropper. I had migraines for 25 years and after 6 months of this I rarely experience one.\n\nWhen I do, I use a high CBD vape oil cartridge called Electra-Tsu by Bloom Farms. This takes the edge off, I do not feel totally altered due to the high CBD but I feel, kind of like I had a glass of wine. Very mild cerebral altercation for me!\n\nCBD sprays, in my experience, will not do much to stop a migraine after they start. They definitely have analgesic and anti inflammatory properties, but I have found only an edible or a vape pen for me can take the pain away. I have found however, that the daily dosing is the only thing in my experience that has stopped them from starting!\n\nYou can read these articles I have written about how I have dealt with chronic pain. However, he has become very nauseous recently and has thrown up the last dosages I have given him. Also, he does not have much of an appetite and has lost weight. His brain tumor keeps him bedridden because that's how the tumor has affected his mobility and gait. When he sits up in bed he gets nausea. Thus, instead of curing nausea and increasing his appetite something seems to be creating the opposite effect--more nausea and vomiting. Do you believe it could be the medical marijuana? I mix his primarily THC with CBD oil and sometimes add a CBD tincture with the THC. Would you please advise?\"\n_____________________\nYour husband is taking THC pills? Marinol? I would switch to a whole plant extract with CBD and THC that also contains the other cannabinoids and terpenes found in cannabis. This should be more effective.\n\nandrewvanmd\n_____________________\nSmoking or vaping cannabis can help with the immediate symptoms of nausea and vomiting. You can also put the oil on his gum and let it absorb through his mucous membranes. Obviously, this is a complex situation and there may not be one cause for his symptoms. YOu should also make sure the product you are giving him has been tested by a lab. CBD impacts the effect of the THC so you might try giving it independently. Again, inhalation can have an immediate impact on nausea.\n\ndneice\n_____________________\nUnfortunately in this population progression of disease can lead to these types of symptoms. If you have not already done so, please contact your physician so that they can rule out acute issues such as hydrocephalus, acute bleed, increased edema, or rapid progression of disease. I can hardly walk two blocks! CBD? Will it help? I've been hearing so much about it.\"\n_____________________\nHello,\r\nI am so sorry to hear about your painful condition.\r\n\r\nHave you tried CBD or THC before? Does THC seem to help with the pain? THC and CBD do work better together for pain relief. I would recommend trying either one of our 1:1 ratio bars. We offer an 60mg bar in a dark chocolate espresso flavor and a 120mg bar in a dark chocolate ginger flavor. We would recommend a starting dose of 5mg for your first time until you know how your body will react. Please let me know if you have any other questions since I would like to know what you have tried so far.\n\nkivaerica\n_____________________\nCBD is definitely worth trying for your pain! Kiva makes two 1:1 ratio CBD/ THC bars. We always recommend starting with a 5MG dose of THC and seeing how that amount feels. Starting with a low dose will help you find your Minimum Effective Dose (MED). If you titrate (slowly increase your dose), you should be able to find that sweet spot of relief. If you find that edible products do not give you a desirable experience, you can also try topicals applied directly to the painful areas- or even do topicals in conjunction with edibles. With topicals you can feel free to use THC-only products as there is no psychoactivity associated with them. We wish you the best of luck in finding comfort and relief in cannabis!\n\nchristiestrong\n_____________________\nYes, I am a strong believer in CBDs and I do think you will find relief of your chronic back pain with CBD and I agree it is often best to use CBD internally as well as the external cream at a 1:1 ratio of CBD:THC. You may apply the cream every hour during your waking hours and this should put your chronic back pain in remission but the trick to getting pain to go away is to apply the salve frequently to keep the pain from breaking through and you are telling you body that you do not want to be notified of each twinge of pain and the body eventually stops sending the signals (unless you reinjure yourself) but you need to apply the cream to the painful area as well as to your cervical & lumbar spine to resolve the neuropathy symptoms. You do have to be a little patient because it will take time to get rid of all the inflammatory cells that are creating your back pain and neuropathy. Being consistent with a daily dose of high CBD, like in a tincture concentrate, and you should start to notice that you are feeling better in a month and in two months you should be significantly improved throughout your body and your chronic back pain may be history. If this has not resolved your problems please, have your doctor check your vitamin B12, magnesium and vitamin C levels and you may need to increase NAC, Glutathione, Alpha Lipoic Acid and and Vitamin C.\n\ndrolson\n_____________________\nChronic pain and neuropathy are extremely common issues and cannabis has been known to help people with both of these conditions. Back pain is known to affect up to 80% of the population at some point. Neuropathy, is estimated to affect up to 20 million people per year and\"is defined as the damage to the sensory, motor or automatic nerves that occurs from an underlying cause.\"\n\nYour question specifically asked if CBD might help with your medical issue. It's important to address how whole plant cannabis, meaning all the cannabinoids including THC, may be used for both of these conditions. \n\nRecent studies have indicated that cannabis reduces chronic pain for both men and women. In our HelloMD/UC Berkeley study on chronic pain and cannabis, 81% of participants said that cannabis was more effective for their pain. Often, it seems that higher-percentage THC strains combat pain for people more effectively, however, high CBD ratio (with low THC%) may also help. A hi CBD strain for pain is ACDC and a hi THC strain that may work is OG Kush.\n\nIn terms of neuropathy, many patients respond better with cannabis than to traditional treatment. Both THC and CBD interact with the nervous system to mitigate pain. It is important to try different kinds of cannabis to see what work for you and your body. \n\n\npamelahadfield\n_____________________\nA colleague here at HelloMD wrote an outstanding article regarding marijuana strains for back pain:\nhttps://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/57e1803d16ce30000b06ba0a/the-best-marijuana-strains-for-back-pain\n\nBecause many patients would like to avoid smoking and vaping, I will provide a list of edible and topical cannabis products that I highly recommend for chronic back pain.\n\nhttps://www.cbd.org/products/cbd-sublingual-spray\nI recommend the 2:1 spray . There is not enough data to state that CBD is safe to use in pregnant or lactating women. I urge mothers to err on the side of caution when it comes to the health of their developing baby.\n\ndrfrye\n_____________________\nWhile there are no studies on CBD per se with pregnant women, in the 1970s there was a study done in Jamaica with cannabis that showed no negative effect. To date there has been no evidence that pregnant women should avoid CBD-rich products, however they should avoid THC until more research is published. One study did show that if you use cannabis during pregnancy there was a slight increase risk of a premature delivery and that actually put your baby at higher risk for medical complications. Until we know the facts, it's always best to leave off the drugs that are not necessary during pregnancy because those drugs may actually be safe for us as adults but they may not be safe for very tiny baby. Below are a few of the main takeaways:\nIndustrial hemp is by no means an optimal source of cannabidiol. Single molecule CBD (even if it is plant-derived) is not going to be as effective as CBD that also includes some THC, terpenes and other secondary cannabinoids. These compounds interact with CBD and THC to enhance their medicinal benefits (this is called \"The Entourage Effect\").\nIndustrial hemp typically contains far less cannabidiol than CBD-rich cannabis strains, so a huge amount of industrial hemp is required to extract a small amount of CBD. This raises the risk of contaminants as hemp is a “bio-accumulator”—meaning the plant naturally draws toxins from the soil.\nHemp-derived CBD and refined CBD powder lack critical medicinal terpenes and secondary cannabinoids found in cannabis oil. \nWe have a blog post from the Cannabis Health Summit where, Dr. Deborah Malka is quoted saying “efficacy numbers of CBD hemp oil are completely different than CBD whole extract - by tenfold… (so) if 10 mg (of whole plant CBD) works for you, you’d need 100 mg of CBD hemp oil\"... and ideally you would also add a supplementary terpene-containing essential oil like hops to mimic the Entourage Effect.\n\nmari\n_____________________\nHere is an article from Martin Lee, ProjectCBD that talks about synthetic vs whole plant CBD and also has the link to the Israeli study. https://www.projectcbd.org/article/synthetic-vs-whole-plant-cbd\nIf you think about it...nature has already figured it all out and puts together amazing combinations of chemicals and compounds, we humans think we can do better but that is not always the case!\n\nPiantaTinta\n_____________________\nI have had severe pain for two years from a unsuccessful knee replacement. We do not have any clinical trials with hemp oil but is still a good place to start while you're waiting for her vitamin D results to be returned. Please have her blood level of vitamin D checked and I will include an article on vitamin D for your review. Do not ruin her skin in the sun because that is the only skin she gets in this lifetime but you can supplement with vitamin D3. \nI do not have the exact doses of CBD hemp oil but you want to start her on low doses of CBD several times per day for the first week and then you could try going to twice a day doses. She likely will not get the full benefit of CBD until she has been on CBD for three weeks but she may receive some pain relief before that time. \nI highly encourage you to get her genetic chart done and to remove all toxins from her diet including sugar and glutamates (not gluten, but that may need to be removed also). She really needs to be away from processed food.\nDo either mom or dad suffer with migraines? \nPlease, get her off all dairy because she's very likely is allergic and that can be manifested by her joints being attacked, and that includes cheese and all milk products in any of her foods. If you need additional help you can always contact me and the office has my number.\nThe article I am sending to you about vitamin D includes adult doses, but since she is the child, her doses must be reduced to one third of the adult dose and her blood levels must be monitored.\nAbout Vitamin D, it is an essential hormone not a vitamin:\nMost humans are Vitamin D deficient. Our ancestors lived outside all day, they did not wear clothes or sunscreen and they did not shower daily washing the oils off their skin and they ate a lot of fish when they did catch fish. Vitamin D is necessary to take calcium from your diet and put it into the bones and the tissue where it can be utilized properly. If you do not have an adequate blood level of vitamin D you will calcify tissue that should not be calcified and you're more likely to suffer leg cramps at night.\nVitamin D is necessary for the human body to function normally because in the human body it is a hormone not a vitamin and hormones are necessary to create new healthy cells.\nIf the vitamin D blood level is low in your body, it negatively affects many systems, such as your muscles and blood pressure. With low levels of Vitamin D you may experience thyroid disease, chronic pain with muscle & joint aching, kidney stones & even calcified heart valves, high blood pressure, depression, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, an increased risk of migraine headaches and even a significantly increased risk of breast cancer with a greater risk for metastatic disease and death. \nThe laboratory ‘normal’ for Vitamin D3 is 30-100 (30ng/mL is rickets level) but for optimum health the blood level must be 55-100. Do you want to be just ‘normal’ or would you like to go for optimum?\nThe kidney clearance function for Vitamin D must be monitored so the larger amounts of Vitamin D are not overwhelming the ability to clear any excess Vitamin D from the system and this is the level of the active form of Vitamin D. \nFor a healthy patient with normal kidney function and vitamin D deficiency, I recommend a large dose (called a bolus) of vitamin D3, approximately 40,000 international units to be given with food one time per week plus 5000 International units of vitamin D3 per day, repeating the sequence for up to four weeks and then do a repeat blood level. For accuracy do not take your vitamin D right before the blood test and do not do the bolus the day before or the day of the blood test. You should notice a significant sense of well-being once your blood level of vitamin D3 is above 55 ng/mL but there is no benefit in going above 100 ng/mL.\nThe blood test is a '25-hydroxy Vitamin D' or abbreviated '25-OH D'\nThe test for kidney clearance of vitamin D is '1, 25-dihydroxy Vitamin D'\nThe tests look almost the same but the tests are quite different in their function.\nLocal laboratories charge up to $250 for the Vitamin D test and insurance rarely covers the test because it has to do with your health not an illness. You may obtain the same test from an online laboratory for about $45, you order the kit a local lab draws your blood for about $15 and it is shipped off to the online laboratory and the results come directly to you. \nSome people are born with genetic snps ( a genetic change in the base sequence of DNA= snp) and those people tend to show emotional distress, osteoporosis, diabetes and even cancer since Vitamin D deficiency may exist even while supplementing Vitamin D3.\nGenetic Information:\n\nIf you would like more information on your genetics and how your body handles contaminants please, order the 23andme.com/drolson test for $199.00, but by ordering under my name you should receive priority testing and a 10% discount.\n\nThe kit will be sent to your home but before you do the test, you will register the kit. Register the kit in a relative’s name (someone who has already passed on). This genetic information on you should be kept private and away from the eyes of any insurance company or attorneys & that is why I say you should register it in a dead relative’s name and date of birth but use your year of birth. \n\nKeep in mind, Insurance companies match you with your name & date of birth so DO NOT give hem the information they need to find your results. \n\nOnce your kit is registered you may do the test & send it out. \n\nWhen your results are ready, you will be notified by email that your relative’s results are in.\nDownload all the results (under the name upper right and save all information. Then connect your relative’s information to geneticgenie.org and download the methylation analysis and detoxification panel. Those are the papers I need to see to do a reading for you. \n\nCall & let me know your results are ready, send the methylation panel to me, and we will arrange an appointment by phone or office visit to go over the results and start improving your interface with the world by letting you know where you have problems with snps in your genetic chart. \n\nRemember, genetics gives us an empty gun, the environmental toxicities fills your gun with bullets and it is what we do on a day to day basis that fires the gun.
