Can I legally grow marijuana for personal use?**\n\nZach K.\n\n-------------------\n\n**No**, unfortunately it’s not legal to grow marijuana plants for **personal use in Ohio**. Not yet at least. In 2021, a [bill (HB 382) was introduced](https://www.legislature.ohio.gov/legislation/legislation-summary?id=GA134-HB-382) to legalize the recreational use of marijuana and allow for adult cultivation. It hasn’t advanced yet, but in 2022 we may see some changes to marijuana laws in Ohio. \n\nStill, as of now the **law prohibits** cultivating cannabis for personal or household use. If you already have your [medical marijuana card](https://www.hellomd.com/get-started/ohio/), then you can visit any of the [licensed dispensaries](https://medicalmarijuana.ohio.gov/Documents/Dispensaries/List%20of%20Ohio%20Medical%20Marijuana%20Dispensaries%20with%20Certificates%20of%20Operation.pdf) around the state. The good news is that you can buy flower at the dispensary, and there are a wide variety of strains available. \n\nIf saving money is the reason you want to grow your own, you may want to look for strains that are sold in larger quantities as shake or small buds sometimes referred to as popcorn buds. In Cleveland, [Terrasana](https://terrasanacannabisco.com/) sells [Riviera Creek Garlic Cookies trim](https://terrasanacannabisco.com/menus/cleveland-menu/?dtche%5Bproduct%5D=garlic-cookies-trim-30819) and [Rise Dispensary](https://oh.risecannabis.com/) sells [Galenas Bluberry Cookie Shake](https://oh.risecannabis.com/dispensary-menu/cleveland-medical-menu/) by the half ounce. \n\nSome dispensaries also offer daily promotions, patient loyalty programs, and veteran discounts to help you lower costs. \n\nBrandon M. \n\n-------------------\n\n![Untitled20.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled20_998c44f98a.png)\n\nIt is not legal to grow your own weed in Ohio. Anyone who wants to cultivate medical marijuana has to [apply for a license](https://medicalmarijuana.ohio.gov/) with the Ohio Department of Commerce. Right now the application period is closed, but you can sign up on their website to receive updates. \n\nThe Department of Commerce approved 33 cultivator provisional licenses, divided into **Level I** and **Level II** categories depending on the square footage of the cultivation area. Twenty-nine of these were awarded a **Certificate of Operation License** after complying with statutory rules. Regulators award a certain number of permits to promote competition and to meet the demands of Ohio’s medical marijuana patient population in a safe and consistent manner. \n\nSince you have your medical card, you can visit any of the [certified dispensaries in your area](https://medicalmarijuana.ohio.gov/Documents/Dispensaries/List%20of%20Ohio%20Medical%20Marijuana%20Dispensaries%20with%20Certificates%20of%20Operation.pdf) to buy cannabis flower from licensed growers, or other products like [oils, tinctures, edibles, and lotions](https://hellomd.com/articles/7-different-ways-to-consume-weed). Flower is available in a variety of strains and Ohio medical patients can legally buy a 45-day supply of cannabis at a time. \n\nI encourage you to explore all the strains available from the currently licensed growers. They sell really fun and yummy strains like [Unicorn Cake by Bullseye Gardens](https://oh.risecannabis.com/dispensary-menu/lakewood-madison-medical-menu/) and [Salty Watermelon by Firelands Scientific](https://www.verilife.com/oh/verilife-cincinnati-ohio-medical-marijuana-dispensary-menu), and the quality is impressive.\n\nEmily F\n\n-------------------\n\n![Untitled18.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled18_65f0d77f80.png)\n\nNo, you can’t grow your own marijuana in Ohio. But you can legally buy marijuana flower from the dispensary. There are 58 dispensaries around the state and they sell flower grown by licensed cannabis cultivators. To hold an operation license, marijuana cultivators have to follow statutory rules enforced by the Ohio Department of Commerce. This ensures the safety and consistency of medical marijuana products sold at dispensaries.\n\nBrands like [Ancient Roots](https://ancientrootsohio.com/shopnow/#) and [Buckeye Relief](https://www.buckeyerelief.com/shop/) offer a variety of [Indica, Sativa, and Hybrid strains](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-indica-sativa-and-hybrid-explained). Most dispensaries list the [cross-breed parents](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-landrace-strains-what-they-are-and-why-theyre-hot) and [terpene profile](https://hellomd.com/articles/what-are-cannabis-terpenes-and-how-do-they-work) of the strain so you can make educated choices. At dispensaries, flower is sold in amounts of 2.83 grams (g), 5.66 grams, 8.49 grams, and 14.15 grams. Medical patients can buy a 45-day supply of cannabis at a time. \n\nThere’s a chance the laws may change in the future to allow personal cultivation. For now, to consume medical cannabis legally, you have to meet the qualifying conditions, [register for your medical marijuana card](https://www.hellomd.com/get-started/ohio/), and buy your flower at the dispensary. \n\nTyler K.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAABQAAAAUCAIAAAAC64paAAAACXBIWXMAAAsTAAALEwEAmpwYAAAEPUlEQVQ4yyXU2W8bRRgA8H1AaqvW9u46ttdnfex6d72+7b0vr9dn4oMmjuKYJM7RNIkxOAmFBBS5FYQmValC2tJSWlWqSIVQkRACxHvf+Z8Yl9Wn0bz8Zr7Zme+Dsukcm+N4VgAjl+cFTgQh8pIsKpIgg3k+z2XSuXQqG0+kYrEERTEkGYsSFI6TUD7LAgkYCGAAACMwsiCJgsSyQjbDZjN5gJlYMkYnKSoejcbwCBkO4xAw/wOwxMSIiiprPCfmOFlRC6ZeUGUlkeYIKh1nUsBTZJwgaIBDQRziWZCkDDw/kaokKLyoGrq+VpW39fRIi9+tZO82xfWalkizFJ1i6GQ0yuARKhQkIGAAUBVdYPUbvVqlbTZUdVWIljFLAb3SKEZnGfca4fy+mnzZr1dUnaTTFJXAcSp4HYcUSQNR0E3DKMz2a4ev51faKRyCplvROOnsfWHwcigKw82Q89VAfXu2LrFCKEJHIlTAH4ZUWVcVw9ArlXq5tcntX1RHP1Q42XPwc41mpm49Ln04l8kTtoW98MPfe38d1H8azvvDdDgcvR6ITHChUCqXatVKu9WXeseR0Qt5+KN4eCHlOMfWY36+TzUH6NN33d3PzC8l/N+TJVMWfL5IOIRDsqjpulksVOeW2t++6d18RPTPnPuvUjcfBssNT3vknt7yHP1S2R4oJu4xCde7/cpozkCcfgInIFnWQNrFQrlYbXy8XOwYLvXG5cWxbfuBr3do74+9O+fsre+SM/PubjWS8yMXC/njBe0qikVC4MxqoWiYJbOiGdObba1TvFrqwbvPPE//ptZPLRsn3t1v0p0B3b8T6w6jUtbxqJEYz4mXLHavxwspsladKX306czqeGbjSBg+IG+/oQ5ee5/9Gd04Rpbvebp7fkF1aBmHQmIm7X7ZTi3r8csWFHNhkKJokqjWmuXVr5pr95SVr/Gts+Dpb8m9J5HROb5xkDBbXlV0qrid9qI9BvtnXaJCPhs85ZhygntWgVeEolkrzO/nP3kibN5Ljp9nNk/InVNydRwrzmAia2NwK+eHf52Nj0qxS9cQIO12B0hbFXm13qpsn9bv/7G6dmguHyXuv5CGJ+naOlYb2tu3A3zVOqvZn0+TxzUGRhAYRu2oA0UdEHjYpmnsny5+ft7t9JuSwq7cEYd7+tKA2tghe0uufBc5LAXeTsd6bMgKo1YrjMATjyD2CW7OVhqdkihKbBY8VK0zUDg5X1pM1UtMSfXnWhajgAVczg+uXLPZbDAMW61Wi8UKJpA8qSchn+UFXuJAJxBFWRfiiSQrpry+kMvtj7GOSM6CoA47aofffzYbwBawEHhhqgg6hgCkwLF8NptnGFDxMYIARRf2uH1uzBsIYi4XBv4QiqIwjLzfGWB4cs+SOClm0G6ATCRSNM0QBInjhM8XcLu9Ho8Pw7xOl3tqyolONgfYBsJmQ/4DS9YYP4hSlcgAAAAASUVORK5CYII=","aspectRatio":1,"src":"/static/369f695c0e062e3ce0d95a62e3e724f7/ee604/f1e6e14958ff8ee234585b9841ca04dc.png","srcSet":"/static/369f695c0e062e3ce0d95a62e3e724f7/69585/f1e6e14958ff8ee234585b9841ca04dc.png 200w,\n/static/369f695c0e062e3ce0d95a62e3e724f7/497c6/f1e6e14958ff8ee234585b9841ca04dc.png 400w,\n/static/369f695c0e062e3ce0d95a62e3e724f7/ee604/f1e6e14958ff8ee234585b9841ca04dc.png 800w,\n/static/369f695c0e062e3ce0d95a62e3e724f7/f3583/f1e6e14958ff8ee234585b9841ca04dc.png 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/369f695c0e062e3ce0d95a62e3e724f7/58556/f1e6e14958ff8ee234585b9841ca04dc.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/369f695c0e062e3ce0d95a62e3e724f7/61e93/f1e6e14958ff8ee234585b9841ca04dc.webp 200w,\n/static/369f695c0e062e3ce0d95a62e3e724f7/1f5c5/f1e6e14958ff8ee234585b9841ca04dc.webp 400w,\n/static/369f695c0e062e3ce0d95a62e3e724f7/58556/f1e6e14958ff8ee234585b9841ca04dc.webp 800w,\n/static/369f695c0e062e3ce0d95a62e3e724f7/99238/f1e6e14958ff8ee234585b9841ca04dc.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Question_12605-markdown","title":"Can you legally grow medical marijuana in Louisiana?","slug":"can-you-legally-grow-medical-marijuana-in-louisiana","content":"**“I’m a medical weed user in New Iberia but am finding the cost kind of high. Louisiana has taken small but significant steps since making legal, medical cannabis available in 2019. For example, a [shortlist of conditions](https://ldh.la.gov/) that had to be met, and recommended by state-certified doctors, was first expanded then thrown right open.\n\nNow any licensed doctor in the state can recommend medical marijuana for their Louisiana patients for just about any kind of debilitating medical condition. While you might not be able to grow your own weed legally — or buy it lawfully as a recreational user — this could change as the state responds to residents’ wishes to have these things.\n\nStill, it’s worthwhile [getting a medical marijuana card](https://hellomd.com/get-started) in Louisiana to access a safe and quality-controlled supply of cannabis and avoid the consequences of being caught and facing possession charges and fines.\n\nAlafair M.\n\n__________________________________\n\n![Untitled65.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled65_b49450ec38.png)\n\nActually, Louisiana doesn’t have a medical card system. You have to see a doctor licensed in the state, and they [make a recommendation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabis_in_Louisiana#:~:text=Cannabis%20in%20Louisiana%20is%20legal,recommendation%20for%20any%20debilitating%20condition) to the statewide medical cannabis registry. This certification allows a state-licensed dispensary to sell you cannabis.\n\nOf course, some doctors know more about medical marijuana than others, so it’s a good idea to find one who is willing to recommend you and has kept up with the fast-evolving field of cannabis medicine. That’s why it’s worth checking out the services of [HelloMD](https://hellomd.com/) to help you get your medical certification in Louisiana. \n\nHelloMD’s medical practitioners are well-versed in the pros and cons of medical marijuana and how it might help you with your condition. In a convenient telehealth appointment, they’ll review your medical history and answer any questions you might have. After they add you to the cannabis registry and their recommendation is received by the dispensary you’ve designated, you are able to buy your cannabis products — up to a 30 days’ supply at a time, or 2.5 ounces of dry flower every two weeks.\n\nJames L.\n\n__________________________________\n\n![Untitled66.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled66_97c42b91cb.png)\n\nThe times do seem to be changing in the Bayou State. Even in the Big Easy, it’s easier to buy medical weed these days. At the beginning of 2022, [Louisiana added raw smokable weed](https://www.wafb.com/2022/01/02/smokable-medical-marijuana-now-available-louisiana-patients/) to the list of products available for patients.\n\nOther forms accepted in the state include oils, extracts, tinctures, sprays, capsules, pills, solutions, suspension, gelatin-based chewables, lotions, transdermal patches, and suppositories.\n\nThe government also approved the home-delivery of medical marijuana from dispensaries. As a side note, it’s interesting to see that Louisiana’s food delivery company [Waitr is teaming up with Flow Payments](https://www.theadvocate.com/baton_rouge/news/business/article_b060acb4-7d3c-11eb-a06c-9f33225672fe.html) to create a specialized platform to sell and deliver legal cannabis in states where it’s allowed. And of course, if you grow more, you get more punishment by the law.\n\nEven as a medical marijuana user, you have other regulations you must observe. For example, you must be 21 years or older. To save money, can I legally grow weed at my home?”**\n\nNancy C.\n\n---------------------\n\n![Medical marijuana has many health benefits](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_25_at_6_41_03_PM_1c31d55096.png)\n\nThe answer is, you should be able to grow your own medical weed at home in New York soon — within limits of course.\n\nIn October 2021, New York’s Cannabis Control Board issued regulations to permit medical cannabis to be grown at home. After a 60-day comment period, the board could make changes, and then the regulations would go into effect.\n\nWhen the [Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act](https://gothamist.com/news/ny-cannabis-board-issues-new-rules-allowing-people-grow-medical-marijuana-home) was passed in March 2021, it legalized recreational marijuana in New York and included the go-ahead for home cultivation of medical weed but only after the state cannabis governing authority put regulations in place.\n\n![Can cannabis prevent infection from COVID-19?](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_20_at_9_08_08_AM_7c90885251.png)\n\nGov. Cuomo neglected to appoint the board members and the deadline to put the regulations in place passed. In the summer of 2021, new Gov. Kathy Hochul took up the legalization cause and assembled five members for the Cannabis Control Board, which in turn oversees the independent [Office of Cannabis Management](https://hellomd.com/articles/new-yorks-best-weed-map-where-to-find-your-legal-marijuana) within the New York State Liquor Authority. The latter is responsible for regulating the recreational cannabis market as well as the existing medical marijuana and hemp programs. \n\nBut we are still waiting for the go-ahead to grow legal medical marijuana.\n\nGeorges Haroun\n\n-------------\n\n![The Botanist medical marijuana dispensary in NYC](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_26_at_9_28_52_AM_319716a042.png)\n\nThe cost of medical marijuana can be too high for some people. One dispensary suggests you bring [$150 to $300 in cash for a first visit](https://vireohealth.com/ny/knowledge-base/how-much-do-the-products-cost/) to buy legal cannabis, so being able grow your own would represent great cash savings — for pennies on the dollar.\n\n![Growing your own marijuana can equate to big cash savings](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_26_at_12_53_35_PM_f1b0b19dc5.png)\n\nThe [regulations established for cannabis home cultivation](https://cannabis.ny.gov/news/cannabis-control-board-approves-regulations-cultivation-medical-cannabis), according to the New York Office of Cannabis Management, include:\n\n- Allowing up to three mature plants and three immature plants per person \n- Enabling a designated caregivers to grow up to six cannabis plants for one certified patient. \n- Prohibiting immature and mature plants, and flower from being sold or bartered to any other person except by a registered organization.\n- Requiring plants be kept in a secure location.\n- Not allowing processing of cannabis at home with any liquid or gas, other than alcohol, that has a flashpoint below 100 degrees Fahrenheit.\n\nAnd it is not just medical marijuana patients that will be able grow their own weed, [recreational users 21 and up will be able to do the same](https://cannabis.ny.gov/adult-use). They can grow up to six plants in their residence for personal use (three mature plants and three immature plants) and a maximum of 12 plants per household.\n\nBut the Office of Cannabis Management adds: “The home cultivation of cannabis plants may only be permitted after the Office of Cannabis Management issues regulations governing home cultivation of cannabis, which must be no later than 18 months after the first adult-use retail sale.”\n\nGustav M.\n\n-----------------\n\nIf you want to buy medical marijuana at a legal dispensary, you need to have your medical cannabis card.
