I’m interested in alternative therapies, like a weed, but don’t like getting high. So I’ve heard about CBD oil and want to hear more. What can it do for me?”***\n\nNagata M.\n_______\n\n![Hello2-min (16).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello2_min_16_c625a59ef8.png)\n\nI think it would be well worth trying. There is a growing body of anecdotal and scientific evidence that shows that [CBD oil for pain can help](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/finding-chronic-pain-relief-with-cbd) especially when it’s chronic. And if you don’t want to experience the high you get with cannabis that has a strong THC content, then [cannabidiol (CBD)](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/cbd) is a great choice because it is largely non-psychoactive and lets you experience a wide range of CBD oil benefits, including pain management. It can provide some relief for old injuries, and address other types of pain, such as joint conditions like arthritis, central nervous system disorders such as fibromyalgia, digestive conditions including IBS, and chronic tension headaches or migraines. CBD oil can provide healthier alternatives to traditionally prescribed pain medications, which often include opiates, which can be addictive and [deadly](https://www.cdc.gov/drugoverdose/deaths/index.html).\n\n[CBD can relieve pain and inflammation](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/can-you-replace-prednisone-with-cbd-for-inflammation) without negative side effects because it interacts with the [endocannabinoid system (ECS)](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system), which can affect or control many of the body’s important systems, such as inflammation, hunger, and, of course, pain. The ECS uses the body’s natural endocannabinoids. But plant cannabinoids, such as those found in marijuana, can activate it as well. CBD interacts with ECS receptors to produce both pain-relieving and inflammation-reducing effects.\n\nKatie G.\n_______\n\n![Hello3-min (12).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello3_min_12_ca4650ebbe.png)\n\nDepending on the type of pain relief you are looking for, you can choose to take [CBD oil in edible forms](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cbd-oil-breaking-the-stereotypes-of-cannabis)—such as tinctures, capsules, or infused treats—or as a topical treatment. The edibles might be preferred if you are looking for widespread, systematic relief. The topical application applied directly to the sore areas, is good for very targeted relief. It’s also a good option if you are worried about drugs entering your bloodstream and potentially interacting with other medications you are taking. One good option here is [Basic Jane Relieve Pain Spray](https://basicjane.com/), which uses CBD and other ingredients to relieve problem areas on the body with a spritz or two.\n\n[Wildflower CBD+ Healing Stick](https://buywildflower.com/products/cbd-relief-stick) also uses hemp-derived CBD and is very easy discrete to apply. So it is a good alternative to oils and creams that can get on your fingers. It also has a proprietary blend of essential oils, such as arnica and wintergreen, which work with CBD to create long-lasting relief. Among the other CBD oil products [designed to relieve pain](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/4-hemp-derived-cbd-products-to-ease-pain) are [Elixinol Hemp Oil capsules](https://elixinol.com/collections/cbd-capsules). The taste- and odor-free capsules make dosing easy. They are also produced in a chemical-free process and designed to absorb quickly and efficiently into the body for long-lasting relief.\n\nTanya D.\n_______\n\n![Hello1-min (15).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_15_ea3f92d4ee.png)\n\nAs a side note, hemp-derived CBD oil is also showing promise in [treating chronic pain in pets](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/can-cbd-oil-provide-pain-relief-for-your-pet). Pet owners who might be wary of giving their dogs or cats a cannabis product that might make them high and stressed are happy to hear that CBD oil's benefits for animals could be the same as for humans, relieving pain and inflammation. It’s worth checking out the [Treatibles](https://treatibles.com/) full line of Organic Full Spectrum Hemp CBD Oil products for pets. CBD reduces inflammation by manipulating the  inflammatory cascade to produce fewer pro-inflammatory pain mediators, such as tumor necrosis factor alpha and prostaglandin E2. CBD also modulates  the CB1 and CB2 receptors to support the analgesic and  anti-inflammatory effects of THC, and also inhibits the enzymes that  metabolize THC, thereby further supporting THC. These effects occur soon after  CBD enters the circulation; onset of pain relief should take no longer than 30 minutes when taking a CBD oil.\n\nHowever, CBD is lipophilic—so it can and will be stored in fat.  Therefore, chronic administration could lead to a slow release of CBD from adipose (fat) tissue, back into the circulation. Although, that  would not explain why you've yet to experience any pain relief when taking CBD.\n\nIn  general, I would recommend: increasing the dose; trying different brands;  ensuring that you're taking the CBD correctly; consider adding THC. \n\nI hope this helps!\n\ndrkim","image":null}},{"node":{"id":"Question_12411-markdown","title":"What is the best product for incontinence, anxiety, and knee pain for a female that is 67 years old.","slug":"what-is-the-best-product-for-incontinence-anxiety-and-knee-pain-for-a-female-that-is-67-years-old","content":"\"@Ale2727\"\n_____________________\nInstead of just one product, multiple products might work for your various issues. However, that would take a very high amount of  CBD—much higher than you should be taking for depression or anxiety. \n\nThe  cytochrome p450 system accounts for 70 to 80 percent of the enzymes involved in drug clearance, making it the most important system for  drug  metabolism. Both THC and CBD are competitive inhibitors  of three different enzymes in the cytochrome p450 system, two of which  are  involved in the metabolism of SSRIs. This means that CBD and THC  are  competing for the same receptors as is the SSRI. A recent literature review conducted by Huson, Granados and Rasko (2018) found that “marijuana increased cardiac workload, myocardial infarctions and strokes in young, chronic users.” The literature review also found that those who smoked marijuana were more likely to require increased anesthetic doses to place laryngeal airways (just like smoking, marijuana causes airway obstruction). “Use within 72 hours of general anesthesia was advised against” (Hunson, Granados and Rasko, 2018). \nBased on the above literature review, it looks like you should be fine because you will have abstained from using cannabis for over a month by the time you receive general anaesthesia. That means smoking marijuana, edibles, and synthetic marijuana.  The use of marijuana, especially immediately prior to surgery, can change the doses needed for sedation. It has been found that cannabis users requires substantially higher doses of anesthesia.  There are other reasons why use of cannabis can compromize operative and post operative period, such as  airway obstruction , respiratory cardiovascular distress, increrased depression of central nervous system (when barbiturates given after surgery), inhibition of other medication action going the same liver metabolic pathway (Huson , Granados, Rasko, 2018).\n\nTherefore, abstaining from marijuana in the weeks before surgery can decrease the likelihood of complications during and after surgery. \n\n Huson, H. I’m noticing a slight bit of pain relief but what I’m really noticing more is my sleep cycle has become slightly longer. Not a problem.  My husband has noticed no change in his sleep and no pain relief. He is worried about addiction, since it seems to be changing my sleep cycle. Is addiction a concern if I stopped taking the tincture?  I am trying to ease up on Celebrex. I haven’t smoked pot in many years. Any feedback appreciated. \"\n_____________________\nAny substance that alters your experience can be habit-forming, but CBD on its own is not considered addictive. In fact, one of the least understood benefits of CBD oil is its possible effectiveness in treating symptoms associated with alcohol and drug addiction.\n\nIt is common, over time, to require more CBD to achieve the desired effect as your body develops a tolerance to the cannabinoid. This is particularly true for new consumers.\n\nKevin P.\n_____________________\nHi there!\nThere is absolutely no potential of developing  an addiction to cannabis when using such a low  THC-concentration-containing product, such as the 20:1 tincture you and  your husband have been using. CBD has no addictive potential; heavy and  frequent use of THC may cause a psychological dependence, but not  physical dependence, as alcohol,  benzodiazepines and opiates can cause. You and your husband are not even on the map of those engaged in heavy THC use. \n\nAlso,  five drops of that tincture likely has between 0.1mg and 0.3mg of THC,  which would be imperceptible for most likely everyone. Many don't even  notice 3mg.  Also, you can/should be taking the oil on an as needed  basis. Taking the oil once per day would not provide relief for more  than 6 hours at the most. I usually recommend taking the oil at least  twice per day. Also, most should at least 10 drops of a 20:1  tincture/dose, as 5 drops likely contains less than 3mg of CBD, and  functionally, zero THC. \n\nSince it seems your husband has difficulty sleeping due to more  noticeable pain in the evening, an oil with a higher THC concentration  would likely be more beneficial. In general, after learning more about  the patient's situation, I would recommend a 1:1 or 2:1 oil if THC is  acceptable to the patient. I recommend starting no higher than 2.5mg of  THC per dose. Also, 1:1 is, by far, the most studied ratio, including in  studies regarding pain issues. For sleep, THC is what causes sedation.\n\ndrkim\n_____________________\nSo, for example, if we wanted to keep the CBD dosage at 10mg/dose,  we would choose the ratio of the product that provides the amount of  THC that is acceptable to the patient. Many patients want no perceptible  psychoactivity during the day, while some psychoactivity during the  evening is acceptable. In this situation, many would use a\nhigher ratio during the day, such as\n10:1,  which would provide 10mg of CBD and 1mg of THC. Most patients do not  perceive psychoactivity when taking 1mg, or less of THC \n\nThen as a  sleep aid, a more balanced ratio, such as 1:1, which would provide 10mg  of CBD, and 10mg of THC. 10mg is considered a \"standard dose.\" Most new  patients report 10mg of THC to be moderately to extremely psychoactive.  So, when starting, it's always a good idea to start low, and go slow.   In general, 2.5mgs of THC would be a good \"test dose.\" 2:1 is also a  popular evening ratio (10mg CBD, 5mg THC). \n\nRatios of between  10:1 and 30:1 are rarely psychoactive, so this ratio-range would be a  good choice for most when psychoactivity is to be avoided, such as  during the daytime, or if the patient prefers to avoid any  psychoactivity. \n\nRatios of between 4:1 and 8:1 are considered mid-range ratios.  In general, products in this range would cause mild psychoactivity,  noticeable anxiety relief and a boosted mood, without feeling \"high\". \n\n\ndrkim\n_____________________\n2:1 and 1:1 are more balanced ratios. In general, this range  provides the most pain relief and is the better choice for sleep issues.  \n\nOils:\n1. Place the oil under your tongue.\n2. Use your tongue to gently “paint” the tincture around your inner cheeks\n3. Wait 60 to 90 seconds before swallowing.\nEffects should peak in about 15 minutes, and should last between 2 to 4 hours \n\nEDIBLES:\nWait  at least 1 hour to gauge efficacy. When you are on an empty stomach,  peak effect is reached in about one hour. However, if you have had a  large meal, especially a fatty meal, it can take up to two hours to  reach peak effect. Effects should last between 4 to 10 hours. \n\nWhen  choosing products, make sure that the product label specifies the  amount of CBD and/or THC per drop or dropper-full. Many products simply  state the total amount of CBD and/or THC, which leads to unnecessary  confusion. \n\nI hope this helps!\n\n\ndrkim","image":null}}]}},"pageContext":{"limit":12,"skip":0,"numPages":54,"currentPage":1,"id":5599,"name":"Pain","slug":"pain","country":"US"}},"staticQueryHashes":["3949754563","4179947113","4202924991"]}
