We’re considering different avenues and treatment, and were wondering about the usefulness of cannabis.**\n\n-----------\nParkinson’s disease is a serious diagnosis. Good for you for facing up to it and seeing what kinds of treatments are available.\n\nThe first thing you should do, if you haven’t already, is go see your doctor, and follow their advice for how to deal with the condition. Sounds like you’ve already done the research, which is great because your partner can play an active role in their treatment decisions, and you can be their advocate and support, as needed.\n\nOthers researching the condition should start with mainstream medical sites that have recognized authority. So, for example, if you put “Parkinson’s disease” into Google the first organic research result is the [Mayo Clinic](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/parkinsons-disease/symptoms-causes/syc-20376055), which is one of the most respected hospitals as far as patient care and cutting-edge research.\n\nThey give a great definition of the progressive nervous disorder, and then go through the symptoms, causes, diagnoses and treatments. You’ll learn that while Parkinson’s can’t be cured right now, you may be able to control the symptoms of the disease, in some cases significantly,. You can learn about the conventional medications and in some case surgeries for dealing with the condition.\n\nAfter this, you may want to do some research on alternative therapies, including medical marijuana. This is where HelloMD comes in. We have a deep well of resources that include many articles on the subject and advice from medical professionals thoroughly versed in the ins and outs of medical marijuana used for a variety of conditions.\n\nSimply drop “Parkinson’s disease” into our site’s search box and you’ll get a list of articles we’ve done on the topic. A good one to start with is “[Marijuana for the Management of Parkinson's Disease]( https://hellomd.com/articles/marijuana-for-the-management-of-parkinsons-disease).” \n\nIf many of the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease are due to a loss of neurons that produce a chemical messenger in your brain called dopamine, then medical cannabis may play a role in management of the disease. The endocannabinoid system is strongly related to the release of dopamine in the body, and the cannabinoids in cannabis can help in achieving better control of Parkinson's symptoms because cannabinoids work as neuro-protective agents that guard against the destruction of neurons.\n\nOr if you want to learn about the role that CBD specifically might play in managing symptoms, [check out this article](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-cannabidiol-or-cbd-can-help-with-parkinsons-disease). \n\nIf you want to learn more, and live in a state that HelloMD serves, you might want to start the process of [getting your medical marijuana card](https://hellomd.com/get-started/), so you can legally buy medical cannabis products. During our fast and easy sign-up process, you’ll be able to speak to one of our knowledgeable medical practitioners, who will answer any questions you may have about Parkinson’s disease and possibly using marijuana to help with its symptoms.\n\nWhile you could, and should, talk to your family doctor about this, keep in mind that medical marijuana is a new and expanding field, and not all medical professionals are up to date with the latest research and practices.\n\nNurse Patty\n\n---------------\nThere are a lot of possible products that may help. It’s a good idea to do your own research and experiment. A good place to start looking is our article by Danielle Lim, “[5 Marijuana Products to Ease Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease”](https://hellomd.com/articles/5-marijuana-products-to-ease-symptoms-of-parkinsons-disease).” \n\nOne of the suggested products is [Mary’s Medicinals Transdermal Patch](https://marysmedicinals.com/product/formula-transdermal-patch/), which release small amounts of medication into the bloodstream over a long period of time, delivering systematic rather than localized pain relief. It has a hand-selected cannabinoid-and-terpene ratio that can deliver eight to 12 hours of relief.\n\nOr there’s the [Care By Design](https://www.cbd.org/products) Sublingual Drops and Sprays. With different consumption options and a good selection of CBD-to-THC ratios, these products are a good choice for cannabis newbies, who can experiment with different tinctures, sprays and ratios to see what suits their needs.\n\nHappy Helper\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.492537313432836,"src":"/static/d659a5c2934803687c29aa81aa335530/14b42/737c30907a60b080c074f1e726e66279.jpg","srcSet":"/static/d659a5c2934803687c29aa81aa335530/f836f/737c30907a60b080c074f1e726e66279.jpg 200w,\n/static/d659a5c2934803687c29aa81aa335530/2244e/737c30907a60b080c074f1e726e66279.jpg 400w,\n/static/d659a5c2934803687c29aa81aa335530/14b42/737c30907a60b080c074f1e726e66279.jpg 800w,\n/static/d659a5c2934803687c29aa81aa335530/47498/737c30907a60b080c074f1e726e66279.jpg 1200w,\n/static/d659a5c2934803687c29aa81aa335530/0e329/737c30907a60b080c074f1e726e66279.jpg 1600w,\n/static/d659a5c2934803687c29aa81aa335530/2d2a6/737c30907a60b080c074f1e726e66279.jpg 5028w","srcWebp":"/static/d659a5c2934803687c29aa81aa335530/58556/737c30907a60b080c074f1e726e66279.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/d659a5c2934803687c29aa81aa335530/61e93/737c30907a60b080c074f1e726e66279.webp 200w,\n/static/d659a5c2934803687c29aa81aa335530/1f5c5/737c30907a60b080c074f1e726e66279.webp 400w,\n/static/d659a5c2934803687c29aa81aa335530/58556/737c30907a60b080c074f1e726e66279.webp 800w,\n/static/d659a5c2934803687c29aa81aa335530/99238/737c30907a60b080c074f1e726e66279.webp 1200w,\n/static/d659a5c2934803687c29aa81aa335530/7c22d/737c30907a60b080c074f1e726e66279.webp 1600w,\n/static/d659a5c2934803687c29aa81aa335530/30780/737c30907a60b080c074f1e726e66279.webp 5028w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Question_12050-markdown","title":"My mother suffers from Parkinson's Disease and spinal stenosis","slug":"my-mother-suffers-from-parkinsons-disease-and-spinal-stenosis","content":"\"Would you recommend a particular CBD product for relief of her pain (mostly back and leg pain)? Would you recommend adding THC to the CBD if she also has trouble staying asleep at night?\"\n_____________________\nHello there!\nSeveral preclinical studies demonstrated that modulating the endocannabinoid system may be useful in treating some motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Unfortunately though, results from clinical studies have been inconclusive and conflicting. However, \"an open-label observational study assessing the clinical effect of cannabis on motor and non-motor symptoms of PD revealed significant improvement after treatment in tremor (P < 0.001), rigidity(P = 0.004), and bradykinesia (P < 0.001).\"\nhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24614667\n\nAlso, typical neuropathological features of Parkinson's include degeneration of dopaminergic neurons--several studies suggest that cannabis has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and other properties that could be neuroprotective, which may explain some of the positive results some studies have show regarding cannabis and Parkinson's.\nhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4926438/\n\n\ndrkim\n_____________________\nAnd although the research regarding cannabis and motor symptoms of PD has been conflicting, cannabis has been shown to mitigate many of the non-motor symptoms which often accompany Parkinson's, such as insomnia, pain, anxiety and depression.\n\nAltogether, I consider cannabis as a valuable adjunctive medicine for the treatment of Parkinson's, which should improve the quality of life for most patients afflicted with Parkinson's disease and may even slow the progression of the disease and reduce motor symptoms.\n\nHigher concentrations of CBD vs THC, such as 20CBD:1THC, will lessen, or even eliminate psychoactive effects, while still providing pain relief. However, products with similar levels of CBD and THC, such as 1:1, are more effective at treating pain, insomnia and anxiety. So, for most people, it takes some trial and error before finding a compromise that provides noticeable relief, while also avoiding unwanted side effects.\nAs an example:\nFor pain and PD treatment-\nhttps://www.cbd.org/cbd-soft-gels-41 - take one capsule every three to four hours. Each pill should contain 2.5mg of THC, which will likely cause mild psychoactive effects. \nIf you'd like to avoid any psychoactive effects, I'd recommend a product, such as https://www.cbd.org/products/chocolates/18-1-chocolate, also taken every three to four hours\nFor sleep and PD treatment-\nhttps://www.cbd.org/products/chocolates/1-1-chocolate - take one piece one to two hours before bedtime.\nHope this helps!\n\n\ndrkim","image":null}},{"node":{"id":"Question_9230-markdown","title":"What strain is best for tremors?","slug":"what-strain-is-best-for-tremors","content":"\"My wife has been approved for medical marijuana. While not entirely conclusive, the research on marijuana shows promise for people with PD.\nFor PD, marijuana is thought to provide numerous benefits, including:\n\npain relief\nreduced tremors\nbetter quality of sleep\nimproved overall mood\nmore ease in movement\n\nDespite the potential benefits of marijuana for people with Parkinson’s, there are also some risk factors involved. THC in marijuana can cause:\n\nimpaired thinking and movements\nhallucinations\nmemory problems\nmood changes\n\nSo when considering the above, it becomes clear that most of the positive effects cannabis has on PD derives from CBD (cannabidiol), whereas most of the possible adverse effects are derived from THC. As such, I would recommend that you seek \"high cbd strains.\"\n\nACDC is a hybrid strain that I have touted for several conditions which would benefit from a high CBD and low THC content. The cannabinoid content is extremely CBD-dominant, sitting on average at 20:1 in its CBD/THC ratio. An imperceptible amount of THC makes ACDC an outstanding companion for daily medicinal cannabis. ACDC would be my top overall recommendation as treatment for the symptoms of Parkinson's disease.\n\nA sativa strain I also recommend is Harlequin. Harlequin is one of the most popular CBD strains available. Typically testing around the 5:2 CBD/THC ratio, it exhibits a sativa-dominant alertness with only mild euphoria.\n\nFor sleep time, a CBD heavy indica strain such as Sweet and Sour Widow would be a good choice.\n\ndrkim","image":null}},{"node":{"id":"Question_8375-markdown","title":"Can you tell me if cannabis is good for Parkinson's disease?","slug":"can-you-tell-me-if-cannabis-is-good-for-parkinsons-disease","content":"\n_____________________\nHello, Cannabinoids have been studied for use in treating symptoms, like bradykinesia (slowness caused by Parkinson's) and dyskinesia (excess movement caused by levodopa).
