However, we are each born with our own unique endocannabinoid system which evolves over time. And because we are unsure about the effects prenatal cannabis exposure may have on the developing fetus, I strongly advise that you abstain.\n\nThe safety of gabapentin for use during pregnancy has not been established either. It's not recommended for use during pregnancy unless your physician concludes that the benefits outweigh the risks. \n\nVitamin B6 often helps alleviate mild to moderate nausea — the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) considers it a first-line treatment for morning sickness.\n\nThere are several anti-nausea prescription medication that have been deemed safe to use during pregancy — Zofran and Reglan are commonly prescribed for prenatal nausea. \n\nPlease consult with your OB/GYN prior to making any changes to your medication regimen. \n\nI hope this helps!\n\ndrkim","image":null}},{"node":{"id":"Question_8614-markdown","title":"Cannabis use during pregnancy","slug":"cannabis-use-during-pregnancy","content":"\"Hi there\n\nmy sister recently found out she is pregnant. She uses cannabis daily to help with anxiety and sleep. I have come across conflicting information when it come to smoking during pregnancy. She has been reducing her use for a while but does not want to stop completely. Her works hours begin at 330am and smoking helps regulate her sleep. Does anyone have any helpful information on smoking while pregnant? Should she switch to edibles instead? Thanks so Much! \"\n_____________________\nThe reason why you've come across conflicting information is most likely because the studies--which are few and far between--so far present results that fall on each side of the aisle: one side concluding that consuming cannabis while pregnant has negative effects on the baby in utero, while another side finding that it doesn't. We published an article on this very debate a while back. If this is something your sister can discuss with her doctor, that's something she should do to help her make as informed a decision as possible.\n\nlyp\n_____________________\nI am not a doctor but I believe any doctor your sister would talk to would probably warn her against smoking marijuana during pregnancy. I'll point you to a video we filmed last year that talks about a study done on this topic.\n\nhttps://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5745c73fb8c3a9000c000008/hellomd-live-episode-4\n\npamelahadfield\n_____________________\nI just wanted to chime in here and say that I stopped using cannabis while pregnant and every medical professional I spoke to said I made the right move. I had awful morning sickness and was tempted to treat it with marijuana, but I didn't as I was too scared of the effects on the baby. \n\nWatch the video that Pamela posted here--our chief medical officer says \"Just don't do it!\" He cites a study where pregnant women who used marijuana had a higher rate of pre-term birth than women who did not. \n\nIt's frustrating to treat anything while pregnant--not a lot of studies have been done on taking things while pregnant, so it's hard to get a definitive answer. But I would encourage you to tell your sister to stop using cannabis while she's pregnant. I know it will be frustrating for her (my husband uses cannabis to fight insomnia, so I understand how important it can be for some people for that issue!), but I really would tell her to stop. If she's not convinced, encourage her to talk to her doctor(s) as well.\n\ngabriella\n_____________________\nI know this is a topic with a lot of conflicting views, but I believe the only 'medical' response is that the safety of cannabis use during pregnancy and nursing is unknown. It is for that reason that no clinical professional is willing to OK using it in those circumstances. Despite the lack of clinical science here, we have to be aware that an enormous uncontrolled experiment has been going on in which large numbers of women are using cannabis during pregnancy without supervision. All we know about the outcome is that, so far, no obvious problems have consistently appeared in the population attributable to this. On the one hand, it can give a sense of reassurance that any direct effect is statistically small enough that it hasn't become obvious. On the other hand, of all matters in healthcare, the safety of children during gestation is at the top of the list. Because the stakes are so high reason demands the utmost caution and the most conservative recommendation.\n\ndrelkind","image":null}},{"node":{"id":"Question_8590-markdown","title":"Planning on a pregnancy ","slug":"planning-on-a-pregnancy-1","content":"\"I weaned myself off of an antidepressant medication, Paxil, by using MMJ. I was taking Paxil because of depression and anxiety. I was wondering, if I plan on becoming pregnant, how would I go about medications? Would I need to get back onto Paxil? Or would it be healthier to continue ingesting MMJ? I can't imagine Paxil being ok for the fetus?\"\n_____________________\nI would like to start out by saying that I'm not a doctor! But I think you should talk with yours about your options now, while you're planning your pregnancy. I know there are some antidepressants that are ok while pregnant, but I will leave it to a doctor to say which ones. I've attached an article below that discusses the subject that you might find helpful. \nI will say that I took a break from cannabis as soon as we decided we wanted to try for a baby and every medical professional I spoke with thought that was the best course of action. \nI know it's frustrating out there since there is very little medical information about what you should and shouldn't do while pregnant, but I definitely think a chat with your doctor(s) now would be the best thing. \nHope this was helpful! \n\ngabriella\n_____________________\nEvidence based literature is not sufficient to support the use of cannabis during pregnancy. However, according to Metz and Stickrath (2015), cannabis used by pregnant women does not appear to signficantly affect fetal health or neonatal outcomes but almost all studies rely on self-report to assess cannabis use in pregnant women. A meta-analysis of 10 studies found that women who used cannabis more than 4x per week were found to have babies of low birthweight, with a mean of 131 g or lighter when compared to women who did not use cannabis. \nPaxil is listed as a D rating for pregnancy meaning it has been shown to have postive evidence of risks but the benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk. That being said, there are other anti-depressants proven to have less risk when used by women who are pregnant. Regardless of cannabis or more traditional medications, treatment of depression in the setting of pregnancy should include expertise from a mental health provider and obstretrician\n\n\njennifernp\n_____________________\nHello there! I understand the difficult situation you are in. When it comes to antidepressants, Paxil is in class D for pregnancy safety (generally not suggested unless there is a life-threatening emergency). Other antidepressants are Class C (use with caution if benefits outweigh risks). The problem is that we don't really know what cannabis does to the fetus. There are conflicting studies that say there are no developmental differences between those babies born to mothers who used cannabis. However, there are problems with these studies (i.e. only some mention the frequency and amount of cannabis use in the pregnant mothers). Other studies show neurodevelopmental issues in babies born to mothers who use cannabis. ACOG (the American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology) have the following to say about cannabis use during pregnancy and afterwards during breastfeeding:\n \n\ndrpark\n_____________________\nhttps://www.acog.org/Clinical-Guidance-and-Publications/Committee-Opinions/Committee-on-Obstetric-Practice/Marijuana-Use-During-Pregnancy-and-Lactation. However, you are between a rock and a hard place because of your anxiety and depression so I understand your quandary. My suggestion is to consider non-pharmacologic options for anxiety/depression management (i.e. intensive cognitive behavioral therapy, self-hypnosis, etc.) and discuss with a mental health professional and your ob-gyn about your options (& their own thoughts on risks/benefits of possibly using medical cannabis vs. other antidepressants) The final decision is ultimately yours. Good luck and godspeed!\n\ndrpark\n_____________________\nIf you plan to become pregnant, the best way is not to take any medicine that may affect the fetus, the main key to a pregnancy is to first get it to generate the embryo and stabilize, so that happens you have to avoid any substance that is nociba\nThe mmj is very good for many symptoms of different patalogoias but, it can affect considerably the fetus in its formation and even more it has effect for babies who are lactating. They alter your behavior, sleep habits, sweating and arrhythmias.\n\nTry relaxation exercises, healthy food and control your pregnancy with your doctor\n\ninkatchperu\n_____________________\nPlease, consider looking at your anxiety and depression and see where it is originating, such as hypercriticism or a lack of love for yourself, is it due to excessive snack foods with chemicals that cause anxiety, is it due to lack of proper nutrients in your diet possiby from depletion due to birth control, or lack of sleep with too much stress? There are many factors that could be addressed and your health significantly improved so that you may not even need drug therapy but the drugs tend to be the quick, easy and profitable answer for typical western practitioners who are stressed for time and quick solutions. Your baby can't give consent for the drugs so it is best to avoid the drugs since your baby needs a safe, nurturing environment during the developmental stages. Please, look for a functional or integrated doctor to help you plan for the healthiest baby and pregnancy outcome possible. When you put your baby's concerns first you will come up with the best solution for both of you and start visioning and invoking your desired spirit now. \n\ndrolson\n_____________________\nThe best-supported medicinal use of marijuana is as a treatment for chronic pain\ncannabis has the ability to totally eliminate nightmares. reduces some of the pain and nausea from chemotherapy and stimulates appetite\nMY DEALERS CONTACT INFO....his the best\ntext:::347-946-1767\nWICKR::: \"donclean\"\n\ndonclean\n_____________________\n \nThe best-supported medicinal use of marijuana is as a treatment for chronic pain\ncannabis has the ability to totally eliminate nightmares. reduces some of the pain and nausea from chemotherapy and stimulates appetite\nMY DEALERS CONTACT INFO....his the best\ntext:::347-946-1767\nWICKR::: \"donclean\"\n\ndonclean\n_____________________\n \nThe best-supported medicinal use of marijuana is as a treatment for chronic pain\ncannabis has the ability to totally eliminate nightmares. reduces some of the pain and nausea from chemotherapy and stimulates appetite\nMY DEALERS CONTACT INFO....his the best\ntext:::347-946-1767\nWICKR::: \"donclean\"\n\ndonclean\n_____________________\n \nThe best-supported medicinal use of marijuana is as a treatment for chronic pain\ncannabis has the ability to totally eliminate nightmares. reduces some of the pain and nausea from chemotherapy and stimulates appetite\nMY DEALERS CONTACT INFO....his the best\ntext:::347-946-1767\nWICKR::: \"donclean\"\n\ndonclean\n_____________________\n \nThe best-supported medicinal use of marijuana is as a treatment for chronic pain\ncannabis has the ability to totally eliminate nightmares. reduces some of the pain and nausea from chemotherapy and stimulates appetite\nMY DEALERS CONTACT INFO....his the best\ntext:::347-946-1767\nWICKR::: \"donclean\"\n\ndonclean\n_____________________\nAny pharmaceuticals you take will be flowing through the blood supply of the baby. Congratulations on your pregnancy. As a general rule, we recommend abstaining from the use any type of cannabis when patients are trying to get pregnant, when pregnant, or when breastfeeding. Cannabis crosses the placenta and into breastmilk, so the baby would receive some of the cannabis. We know that cannabis can cause lower birth weight babies and other anomalies.
