Like most research done in the cannabis field, the effects of cannabis on sleep cycles is still in its infancy and requires more research to make some solid arguments. That being said, the studies on cannabis and sleep that were conducted in the 1970’s did show that varying levels of THC decreased the amount of REM sleep that participants experienced. We know that a lot of our dreaming is done during the REM sleep cycle, so there has been some correlation made between the use of cannabis with a decreased occurrence of dreaming. Again, we should keep in mind that the evidence is limited, and further research is required, along with a better understanding of its clinical implications. \n\nCheck out this article by one of the contributing writers at HelloMD. Dreaming also plays a role in the processing of emotional memories, and  balancing mood and learning.\n\nWhile decreasing the fraction of time spent in the  REM stage seems detrimental, for many, the absolute amount of time spent in the REM stage of sleep may increase, since the overall amount of sleep has increased. For help maintaining sleep, I recommend to use 2.5mg edible cannabis right at bedtime. 2.5mg is a low dose to start; you can increase the dose over time if necessary. If you wake with morning grogginess, decrease the dose. \n\ndrjacquelynlew\n_____________________\nHello, \nI agree with Dr. Lew, in that it's THC, rather than CBD, that helps most when treating insomnia. And as Dr. Lew suggests, it's always best to start low and go slow. Also, because the main issue for you is staying asleep, edibles would likely be the best solution; taking the edible very close to bedtime should also help you stay asleep longer. Here are a few quality products to consider:\nhttp://kivaconfections.com/products/petra\n2.5mg THC/serving\nhttp://sensiproducts.com/product/sensi-chew-insomnia-with-melatonin/\n10mg THC, 4mg melatonin/serving\nhttp://kivaconfections.com/products/bars\n5mg THC, 5mg CBD/serving\n\n\ndrkim\n_____________________\nActually, sleep disturbance challenges reveals to us why Cannabis is amazingly beneficial for so many people. Many times I find that people are doing far too much THC and THC stimulates the brain and that's how it makes us creative and uplifted but too much TCH can also cause insomnia. I oftentimes recommend that people microdose THC during the day for a happy uplift and you can follow that with more THC in the evening but then you must take a large dose of CBD at bedtime because when CBD joins with the THC you have in your body you make Indica inside your body and you go to sleep within an hour and you wake up refreshed the next morning. In one month you will notice that you are getting better and in two months you should be awesome if you are doing enough CBD. For those of you who like the uplift from THC with no CBD during the day, do your CBD at night and this treatment plan may work much better for you.\n\ndrolson","image":null}},{"node":{"id":"Question_11838-markdown","title":"Is there a recommended tincture that helps with falling and staying asleep?","slug":"is-there-a-recommended-tincture-that-helps-with-falling-and-staying-asleep","content":"\n_____________________\nHello,\nFor insomnia, I generally recommend a 1CBD:1THC or 2CBD:1THC tincture, such as those found at\nhttps://www.cbd.org/products/cbd-sublingual-spray\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_G4OqWxgys\n\ndrkim","image":null}},{"node":{"id":"Question_11757-markdown","title":"Are there differences in REM sleep between CBD and THC?","slug":"are-there-differences-in-rem-sleep-between-cbd-and-thc","content":"\"I am aware that marijuana suppresses REM sleep, which is something that I have missed incredibly, so after learning of this I stopped smoking entirely and have been dreaming nightly. I am a legitimate medicinal marijuana user, however, and my arthritis, aches and pains have come back. With that being said, I am trying to find research on (but have had no luck) whether or not CBD oil would also suppress REM sleep, or if using that would allow me to figuratively have my cake and eat it too? I want to be able to continue dreaming lucidly, vividly, and nightly as I currently am, but I also don't want to have to deal with the pain. Thank you for your time.\"\n_____________________\nHello,\nAccording to one study, similar to THC, CBD was shown to reduce the time spent in REM sleep. The study also suggested that CBD reduced stage 4 sleep. \nhttps://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0014579306008155\nHowever, in order to better understand how CBD affects your own ability to dream, I recommend that you consume pure CBD at the same time you would take your \"standard\" cannabis. If you still don't dream much, try taking the dose earlier, so that the CBD and or/THC has more time for elimination. \n\n\ndrkim\n_____________________\nThe effect of cannabis on REM sleep duration is well established, and most regular cannabis users report increased dreaming upon stopping their cannabis use. I agree with Dr. Kim that you should just go ahead and try pure CBD to see if it affects your dreaming. Here is some evidence that CBD does not, in fact, disturb the normal sleep cycle https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5895650/ \nOf course, I also want to note that I'm not aware of any adverse health effects attributable to the shortening of REM sleep in regular cannabis users. There is a potential health consequence of REM deprivation, but no evidence at all that the changes observed with cannabis use in any way constitute 'deprivation.' For some people (eg PTSD patients) this reduction in dreaming is, in fact, experienced as therapeutic, especially when subjectively compared with their former sleep quality. \n\ndrelkind","image":null}},{"node":{"id":"Question_11732-markdown","title":"i need help sleeping and relaxing","slug":"i-need-help-sleeping-and-relaxing","content":"\n_____________________\nhow best to take CBD / CBN with uther meds like BP meds etc some say wait ahour after you take meds ??\n\nGMAN","image":null}},{"node":{"id":"Question_11643-markdown","title":"What is an edible that would help my back pain and thus allow me to sleep all night?","slug":"what-is-an-edible-that-would-help-my-back-pain-and-thus-allow-me-to-sleep-all-night","content":"\n_____________________\nHello, \nFor most with similar goals as yours, I would recommend a \"standard\" indica edible, such as \nhttp://sensiproducts.com/product/sensi-chew-100-indica-for-nighttime/\nOr \na product with similar amounts of THC and CBD, such as\nhttp://sensiproducts.com/product/sensi-chew-cbd-gold-11-more-pain-relief/\n\nAlthough products with higher THC content would be more effective, those wishing to avoid the psychoactive effects of THC should consider products, such as\n1. https://www.cbd.org/products/cbd-chocolate/ 18:1\n2. https://treatwellhealth.com/products/high-cbd-tinctures/ 20:1\n3. http://truefarma.com/product/sweet-releaf-extra-strength-2oz/\n\ndrkim","image":null}},{"node":{"id":"Question_11633-markdown","title":"Can I use this for menopausal insomnia when I wake up in the middle of the night and cannot go back to sleep?","slug":"can-i-use-this-for-menopausal-insomnia-when-i-wake-up-in-the-middle-of-the-night-and-cannot-go-back-to-sleep","content":"\n_____________________\nHello, \nYes you can use that product. Some people find that varieties of cannabis rich in the terpenes myrcene and linalool are particularly helpful for sleep, and when you consider that some terpenes (plant essential oils) eg rose, orange, are traditionally used in herbal remedies for calming, this makes sense. Patients often do have to try several varieties of cannabis to find one with the dominant effects they are seeking, such as sedation or promoting sleep. The current way people refer to cannabis effects is to use a shorthand of \"sativa\" for activating effects and \"indica\" for relaxing effects. This usage correlates poorly with the botanical meaning (leaf shape and plant height), but nowadays everyone knows that when you say \"indica effects\" you mean relaxation and sedation. I also like the idea of the Dosist vape pens because they give you a way to quantify how much you are taking, making it easier to reproduce the same dose that provided the effects being sought. Cannabis effects can be somewhat dose dependent, changing in character at different doses, so it's useful to keep track of how much is being taken at a time. Good luck with your experiments. \n\ndrelkind","image":null}},{"node":{"id":"Question_9543-markdown","title":"I have chronic neuro pain in both legs. If your issue is goin to sleep, you want a faster and shorter acting substance. Vaping, flower or a tincture would be best for this.\r\nIf your issue is staying asleep, then a edible which takes 1-2 hours to kick in, would be the best for you since it last the longest and will help you stay asleep.\r\nWhat is important is to keep a \"sleep log\" of what you had for dinner (fatty meal, etc) and what time you ate. Record that, as well as what cannabis product you took, how you slept and how you felt in the morning. You may need to adjust the dose, time of use etc. depending on how are affected.
