Before answering, there would be a couple questions with which I would want clarification. When were you formally diagnosed with ADD/ ADHD and what types of treatments have you tried so far? Have you been diagnosed with anything else that might contribute to the diagnosis? (i.e. anxiety/panic disorder, depression diagnosis, etc?). As for cannabis, there are interesting studies being done, that might link ADHD to the CNR1 (Cannabinoid receptor 1) on Chromosome 6 ( article link: \n https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2685476). However, there are other studies that seem to find a correlation between ADHD and CUD (Cannabis use disorder) (article link: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4882033/)\n \n So with all these seemingly contradictory bits of information , what would be my recomendation? If you haven't been formally diagnosed by a psychiatrist and at least given a good trial of first line medications, you owe it to yourself to at least check these out first or to see if your initial diagnosis of ADHD might have been mistaken. Another option is that cannabis can be used in moderation to help you as a pt handle the side effects from the Rx meds/ stimulants. If you absolutely can' handle these Rx meds and want to experiment with cannabis, I would only do so under a very controlled setting with the lowest amount of cannabis use possible and with a psychiatrist/ therapist supervising the overall treatment plan. Keep in mind that if you are under the age of 25, heavy (daily/ near daily) cannabis use has associated cognitive/ IQ decline and increased rates of schizophrenia-like symptoms, worsening of anxiety/ depression, bipolar and other unsavory mental health issues; mult. sources have cited that this is linked to the frontal lobe of your brain being damaged. The overall message is: yes, this might help but overall ADHD should be managed by a multi-modal response that includes more than medications as cited by sources including the British Journal of Psychiatry. I hope that this information helps and if you want to talk further for an online consult, we can do that too!\n\ndrpark\n_____________________\nUnfortunately, there is very little formal research regarding the possible therapeutic value cannabis may have on ADHD and ADD. However, a recent study by Loflin et al., studied current cannabis users and found that when the study subjects did NOT use cannabis, they were much more likely to exhibit hyperactive-impulsivity symptoms; or alternatively worded, cannabis helped reduce hyperactive-impuslivity symptoms in established cannabis users.\n\nAccording to the study above though, cannabis did not have much effect on focus. However, there is a plethora of anecdotal evidence supporting a positive effect on both hyperactive-impulsivity and focus. There was even a study which polled ADHD internet forums about the effectiveness of cannabis as a treatment. The study concluded that despite a lack of systematic research supporting the beneficial effects of cannabis use for ADHD, online discussions indicate that cannabis is helpful for improving focus in ADHD patients.\n\nWhen considering the above, in combination with the fact that conventional medications for ADD wreak havoc on one's health, I do believe that cannabis is a viable treatment option to try. Most of my ADD patients report a significant boost to their focus with a very small dose of sativa or a sativa-dominant hybrid.\n\ndrkim","image":null}},{"node":{"id":"Question_9969-markdown","title":"Should you be worried if you lose consciousness after smoking marijuana?","slug":"should-you-be-worried-if-you-lose-consciousness-after-smoking-marijuana","content":"\"My niece has fainted right 3 times in the last year after smoking marijuana.\"\n_____________________\nIt is hard to know for sure what is behind her fainting spells, but marijuana can have some properties that could contribute to feeling lightheaded or faint. Side effects of marijuana are associated with the dose consumed, i.e. how \"strong\" it is, or how much THC is in it, as well as how it is consumed. The sudden onset of a smoked product would be very different than the effect of a milder product that is swallowed for instance, so different products and different routes of administration can definitely have different effects. Marijuana, particularly smoked marijuana which is predominantly THC, can lead to temporary changes in heart rate and blood pressure. Sometimes the heart can seem to \"race\" or go faster, and blood pressure can go down, particularly when first standing up. For a person who is dehydrated for instance, or with low or borderline blood pressure, this could theoretically lead to fainting as you described. Of course it would be very difficult to know for sure what happened specifically those 3 times, but it is something that she would definitely want to look into so it can be prevented from happening again. Fainting spells in young people aren't usually due to something dangerous, but depending on your niece's age, health level, heart health, etc it is hard to say what the cause is, so the safest approach would be to see her doctor and get checked out.\n\ndrbultman","image":null}},{"node":{"id":"Question_9880-markdown","title":"Would you recommend that I ingest cannabis oil rather than smoke cannabis?","slug":"would-you-recommend-that-i-ingest-cannabis-oil-rather-than-smoke-cannabis","content":"\"I'm dealing with cancer.\"\n_____________________\nYes, my personal opinion is that those who take cannabis oil by ingestion have far better results than smoking. It's like my stomach swells up like a balloon and feels like it's gonna pop. I'm feeling the pressure in my chest now too. I usually use the vape pens, and I make my own cannabis infused coconut oil, that I use to make edibles. The swelling is less with those. When, or IF, I try to smoke any flowers, I don't do a lot.. but I wonder why I'm having this reaction to it. Anyone know what could be going on? \n\n\"\n_____________________\nIt sounds as if you are having some of the cannabis smoke entering your stomach, in essence \"swallowing\" the smoke. This may result is some burping as you release it. With the other methods you spoke of, the amount of smoke that enters your stomach may be less. Other then that I cannot think of a reason why that stomach bloating would occur.\n\nPerry Solomon, MD\n_____________________\nI have similar symptoms that you described and there are possibilities -- that do not include \"swallowing smoke\", especially since you said it also happens more mildly with edibles. Consider that it might be a mild form of Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome. Its seldom documented medically unless patients present at ER with non-stop vomiting that is oddly only relieved by hot showers. Like you, the only symptoms I have are extreme bloating. If I stop smoking, within about 24-48 hours the bloating subsides and I look and feel as though I lost 30 lbs.\n\nvch881\n_____________________\nI have the same issue as vch881. I have trouble with marijuana and I am trying to reduce consumption. When I smoke daily, I end up with a bloated feeling in my stomach a sort of swolen throat feeling. It is not painful but there is a constant feeling like there's something stuck in my throat and I need to swallow. I also feel the need to drink a lot of water when I am smoking marijuana so that contributed to the bloated stomach. If I stop consuming marijuana for a day or two it all subsides and my stomach and throat feel fine again. This is just a personal anecdote from my experience with marijuana over the years. \n\nRedwhite85","image":null}},{"node":{"id":"Question_9848-markdown","title":"Can you smoke while pregnant?","slug":"can-you-smoke-while-pregnant","content":"\n_____________________\nThere have been many many studies that show that smoking cannabis while pregnant or breastfeeding can lead to detrimental effects of the newborn. There has been one from over 20 years ago from Jamaica that seems to show no negative effects. You do need to have a physician certify that they are indeed your doctor and that you have a qualifying debilitating condition. You can read more here: http://norml.org/legal/item/illinois-medical-marijuana\n\nIf it's the second option, and you want to buy cannabis from Illinois and have it shipped to another state, that is prohibited. Cannabis remains illegal at the federal level, so you cannot transport it across state lines.\n\nashleigh\n_____________________\nMany CBD products are available anywhere in the US over the internet. Can you recommend where to begin for chronic pain/fibromyalgia plus neck pain? I tend to get irritable with the cbd capsules from health food store and paranoid from smoking. Thank you.\"\n_____________________\nIt may take some experimentation with different products to figure out exactly what works for your pain, but I'd suggest starting with the following two options. \n\nFirst, I'd find a tincture or edible that works well for you - some way to ingest cannabis so it works systemically on your pain. Many folks who are dealing with chronic pain prefer medicine that is not psychoactive, so I'd recommend starting with a high-CBD medicine. Remember that different tinctures and edibles use different strains of flower, so if one doesn't work well for you, try a different one before discounting CBD all together. Some specific products you might try - Om Edibles CBD sipping cacao, The Farmaceuticals Co CBD tincture, Moxie Meds 4:1 tincture. If these don't give enough pain relief, try a tincture/edible that is still low dose, but heavier in THC - maybe Treatwell's 1:1 tincture, or Oara chocolates that are only 5mg. You will have some psychoactivity from these THC products, but it should be mild if you keep the dose low - under 5mg, but I suggest starting with 1-2 mg to see how it works - that should also keep paranoia low. \n\nThe second, additional approach would be to use a topical on specific areas of pain (your neck, for example). A few I'd suggest starting with - Flower child muscle and bruise balm, Sweet Releaf, Om edibles oil, The Farmaceuticals Co CBD balm. I'd suggest doing this in addition to ingesting the cannabis, however, since your pain isn't originating from the outside (a bruise or sore muscle). Hope this helps!\n\namanda","image":null}},{"node":{"id":"Question_7555-markdown","title":"Arthritis and migraines","slug":"arthritis-and-migraines","content":"\"CBD (indica and sativa) tinctures have not worked at all for arthritis. How much is too much tincture? I'm new to this so need a lot of educating but so far I'm not very impressed. Don't want to smoke. One topical helps but smells like weed so can't go out with it on. Kiva 60/60 chocolate helps with sleep. Am I missing something ?\"\n_____________________\nHi, I would ask are you using primarily all CBD and how often are you dosing and for how long? Most CBD tinctures are usually displayed with a ratio of CBD:THC so you may have a 20:1 which would be 20 parts CBD to 1 part THC. CBD does help with inflammation but in my experience, a CBD tincture does not help immediately with pain, it is something that when taken over a longer period of pain may help calm general inflammation and discomfort.\n\nI don't have arthritis but I have intense migraines. I found that when I started taking CBD tinctures it took about 2-3 months before i noticed a real decrease in my pain until finally I don't get them at all anymore. That said, everyone is different. I find a tincture with high CBD 20:1 followed by a tincture with 4:1 later in the day is what works best for me. \n\nTopicals vary and many yes, do smell terrible or can be greasy. Topicals are great because they provide localized relief and do not enter the blood stream. Two topicals I love are SweetReLeaf and FlowerPower. \n\nAnother thing you might consider is microdosing during the day very small amounts of THC in 1-2 mg which can help with pain and relax the body while you are still able to function mentally. Satori Chocolates now has a great product. I will include links below.\n\nhttps://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-soothes-arthritis-pain\nhttps://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/microdosing-the-big-new-trend\n\nI hope this helps!
