I've done everything to support better sleep, but nothing seems to help. Will marijuana help me sleep?\"**\n\nLisa A.\n\n----------------------\n\nI tried all kinds of high-THC, high-CBD, or even high-CBN edibles, vapes, and flower strains, but I noticed slight issues with each. One would make me anxious and make sleeping hard, another left me feeling worn out in the mornings, and another simply wasn't helping me sleep at all. I went through this phase of experimentation for about a month until I found [Wana Optimals Fast Asleep gummies](https://www.wanabrands.com/products/gummies/optimals/optimals-fast-asleep-rec). \n\n![Hello1-min (8).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_8_5684169bc2.png)\n\nWana's Fast Asleep gummies were designed specifically to help with sleep. They contain a mix of cannabinoids as well as melatonin and [sleep-inducing terpenes]( https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-terpenes-pack-a-therapeutic-punch). Some of my favorite things about these gummies are the fast onset (typically about ten minutes) and that it does not leave me drowsy the following day.  \n\nWana didn't call these gummies \"fast asleep\" for nothing. They literally make my eyelids heavy within 10 minutes, and I'm usually fast asleep within 20 minutes. The best part is that I don't wake up in the middle of the night – I sleep soundly and wake up refreshed. \n\nYou can find where to purchase Wana Optimals Fast Asleep gummies on [Weedmaps](https://weedmaps.com/brands/wana-edibles/products/wana-edibles-fast-asleep) or at retailers like [LivWell](https://livwell.com/order_ahead/wana-fast-asleep-gummies-20mg?sku=R1005100) for $23. \n\n Jeff L. \n\n-----------------\n\nIt's great that you're considering cannabis as a natural sleep aid. [Common side effects](https://www.webmd.com/sleep-disorders/understanding-the-side-effects-of-sleeping-pills) of prescription medication such as Ambien, Halcion, Lunesta, Rozerem, and Sonata include:\n- Burning or tingling in the hands, arms, feet, or legs\n- Changes in appetite\n- Constipation\n- Diarrhea\n- Balance problems\n- Dizziness\n\n![Untitled52-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled52_min_f2551d1a79.png)\n\nBased on my experience, I recommend trying marijuana as a more natural way to fall and stay asleep. Here are some of my tips:\n\n- Not every cannabis product is created equal – certain types of marijuana products are more helpful for sleep than others (some might keep you awake).\n- Experiment with different product types, strains, and consumption methods before making any hard decisions. \n- Be cautious with dosage. Start low and go slow.\n\nRachel C.\n\n------------------\n\nIt may feel like a lot at first, but I'm hopeful that my experience with cannabis can help. I was struggling in a very similar way. I would lay awake most nights after very long days and still find my mind racing. I knew with certainty that sleep wasn't going to come easy most nights, leading to higher stress levels, lower productivity, and increased anxiety. \n\n![Cannabinoids and terpenes help with sleep](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_04_18_at_2_39_29_PM_524142971a.png)\n\nCannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid in marijuana. This cannabinoid can help relieve pain, [anxiety](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/understanding-how-cbd-can-calm-your-anxiety), and more. CBD also promotes a better night's sleep and one study found that it [increased sleep scores in 67% of adults](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30624194/) post consumption. It's also thought that CBD [helps with the release of cortisol](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6326553/pdf/18-041.pdf), which acts as a sedative in consumers. \n \n![Cannabis can help some people fall asleep better](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_04_18_at_2_42_03_PM_a8a0054228.png)\n\nCannabidinol (CBN) is another cannabinoid that is known to help relieve stress and anxiety, which can lead to a better night’s rest. [According to Ari Mackler](https://www.forbes.com/sites/ajherrington/2021/03/17/can-cannabis-help-you-get-a-good-nights-sleep/?sh=58d8bc0f106b), the chief scientific officer for Plus Brands, \"CBN appears to interact with the body's endocannabinoid system, which in turn, can affect the function of many hormones and neurotransmitters that are involved with mood, energy, and sleep.\"\n\nTetrahydrocannabinol (THC) helps to amplify the effects of CBD and CBN. When all three cannabinoids are combined, they can significantly impact a person's ability to sleep – promoting long-lasting sleep. \n\nLastly, CBG is within this formulation, which is known to help relieve pain and inflammation. Often, physical tension or discomfort can cut sleep short, so this cannabinoid is a great addition to the mix. \n\n![Cannabis can help some people fall asleep better](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_04_18_at_2_40_40_PM_2a017f489f.png)\n\nThe best cannabis products for sleep aren't focused on a single cannabinoid – instead, they use the most sleep-inducing cannabinoids together to create an optimal sleep-enhancing weed product. \n\nPaul R.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.5037593984962405,"src":"/static/245eb87267ab451c86bc6941100398bc/ee604/37b323f97947404467cb8e9a4c768a36.png","srcSet":"/static/245eb87267ab451c86bc6941100398bc/69585/37b323f97947404467cb8e9a4c768a36.png 200w,\n/static/245eb87267ab451c86bc6941100398bc/497c6/37b323f97947404467cb8e9a4c768a36.png 400w,\n/static/245eb87267ab451c86bc6941100398bc/ee604/37b323f97947404467cb8e9a4c768a36.png 800w,\n/static/245eb87267ab451c86bc6941100398bc/f3583/37b323f97947404467cb8e9a4c768a36.png 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/245eb87267ab451c86bc6941100398bc/58556/37b323f97947404467cb8e9a4c768a36.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/245eb87267ab451c86bc6941100398bc/61e93/37b323f97947404467cb8e9a4c768a36.webp 200w,\n/static/245eb87267ab451c86bc6941100398bc/1f5c5/37b323f97947404467cb8e9a4c768a36.webp 400w,\n/static/245eb87267ab451c86bc6941100398bc/58556/37b323f97947404467cb8e9a4c768a36.webp 800w,\n/static/245eb87267ab451c86bc6941100398bc/99238/37b323f97947404467cb8e9a4c768a36.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Question_12672-markdown","title":"What's the best marijuana to help me sleep?","slug":"whats-the-best-marijuana-to-help-me-sleep","content":"**\"*I've heard that marijuana can be useful for sleep, but I'm unsure what kind of products/strains to try out. Are there any specific marijuana products for sleep?*\"**\n\nCole J.\n\n---------\nConsuming cannabis for a better night's sleep is trending, but achieving success comes down to finding the right product for you. There are so many options in dispensaries these days it can seem overwhelming. \n\nWeed is still being studied for its impact on sleep, but much of the research is promising. The [Community for Sleep-Care Professionals](https://www.aastweb.org/blog/medical-marijuanas-effect-on-sleep) says, \"*It is a universally acknowledged truth that marijuana can make you sleepy*.\" I concur with this statement!\n\nSpecific cannabinoids within marijuana are linked to a better night's sleep. \n\n[CBN](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/beyond-thc-and-cbd-what-you-need-to-know-about-cbc-cbn-and-cbg) is a newly popular cannabinoid and is often found in marijuana-infused sleep aids. Some studies have shown that CBN relieves stress and anxiety, which often get in the way of a good night’s rest. \n\n[CBG](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cbg-is-this-cannabinoid-more-powerful-than-cbd) is a little-known cannabinoid which is known to help relieve pain and inflammation.\n\n[CBD](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-cbd-and-how-can-it-help-me) has also shown to have a modulating effect on your [endocannabinoid system (ECS)](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system) and may help to establish more regular sleeping patterns. \n\n[THC](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/thc), the psychoactive component within weed, can also help you get to and stay asleep. However, with THC, you'll need to be cautious and not take too much - doing so can disturb REM sleep and keep you awake! Often, lower-dose THC cannabis products are more effective for getting and staying asleep.\n\nBut the primary problem many people have when using cannabis for better sleep is finding the right products. Here are two of my personal favorites: \n\n![Hello1-min (37).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_37_77669051e9.png)\n\n[Dosist's Sleep Vape Pen](https://dosist.com/formula-detail/sleep) has been a favorite of mine for years. This vape pen is unique - as you inhale, it vibrates when you have consumed a full dose. For me, the understanding dosage is important, as I don't want to overdo it before going to bed. With an 8:1 ratio of THC to CBD, it is fast-acting and helps me to relax almost immediately.\n\n![Hello1-min (8).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_8_5684169bc2.png)\n\n[Wana Optimals Fast Asleep](https://www.wanabrands.com/products/gummies/optimals/optimals-fast-asleep-rec) gummies are another great option. A fast-acting edible like this will help you get to sleep quickly. I had issues with restlessness when I slept until I started taking these low-dose THC gummies at night. Optimals has a unique blend of cannabinoids, including THC, CBG, CBD, and CBN, plus melatonin.\n\nBefore bed, I take one or two gummies, and within twenty minutes, I will often nod off. You can find where to purchase Wana's Fast Asleep gummies on [Weedmaps](https://weedmaps.com/brands/wana-edibles/products/wana-edibles-fast-asleep).\n\nJack F. \n\n-------------------\n\nI've been using marijuana to help me sleep for a few years now. It took a bit of experimentation to figure out what strains of cannabis were finally best for sleep, but I've found some that work great for me. \n \nTHC and CBD can both [support a better night's sleep](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15118485/). I've found the key to success is to look for strains that have a bit more THC but are known to be sedative. THC can be tricky, though, as you'll want to find the right dose for you. Often, people find that low doses of THC are best. It really depends on you.\n\nIf you are vaping or smoking, I'd recommend consuming it very close to when you plan on going to sleep. This method of consumption is fast-acting, and with the right strain, you will find your Zzzz's quickly.\n\nPersonally, there are a few weed strains that have worked wonders for me. I'll list a few below. \n\n![Hello2-min (35).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello2_min_35_b88d2f7e60.png)\n\n[Harlequin](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/harlequin) is a great strain on sleep. Even though it's Sativa-dominant, it contains high levels of CBD and does not have a strong psychoactive effect. This strain is perfect for newer cannabis consumers. \n\n![Hello3-min (30).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello3_min_30_9e1a9155de.png)\n\nAnother favorite of mine is [Purple Urkle](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/purple-urkle). This strain has been around since the 1980s and is perfect for unwinding after a long day. This strain is your classic Indica and may induce serious couch-lock - which is a great thing if you need to get a better night's rest.\n\n![Hello4-min (28).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello4_min_28_c4ae9856b5.png)\n\nIf I had to pick one favorite strain (and it wouldn't be easy), I suppose I'd go with [Lavender](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/lavender). I thoroughly enjoy this strain, and it has an all-over body sedative effect on me. The smell is surprisingly similar to actual lavender, which I also enjoy. \n\nRegardless of the strain you choose, cannabis is known to help with sleep. Good luck!\n\nJohn W.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.5037593984962405,"src":"/static/026a24c399dfd927e4b2c7d1f7c949dc/ee604/ec179819d8f51bfd242a9efa139b6861.png","srcSet":"/static/026a24c399dfd927e4b2c7d1f7c949dc/69585/ec179819d8f51bfd242a9efa139b6861.png 200w,\n/static/026a24c399dfd927e4b2c7d1f7c949dc/497c6/ec179819d8f51bfd242a9efa139b6861.png 400w,\n/static/026a24c399dfd927e4b2c7d1f7c949dc/ee604/ec179819d8f51bfd242a9efa139b6861.png 800w,\n/static/026a24c399dfd927e4b2c7d1f7c949dc/f3583/ec179819d8f51bfd242a9efa139b6861.png 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/026a24c399dfd927e4b2c7d1f7c949dc/58556/ec179819d8f51bfd242a9efa139b6861.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/026a24c399dfd927e4b2c7d1f7c949dc/61e93/ec179819d8f51bfd242a9efa139b6861.webp 200w,\n/static/026a24c399dfd927e4b2c7d1f7c949dc/1f5c5/ec179819d8f51bfd242a9efa139b6861.webp 400w,\n/static/026a24c399dfd927e4b2c7d1f7c949dc/58556/ec179819d8f51bfd242a9efa139b6861.webp 800w,\n/static/026a24c399dfd927e4b2c7d1f7c949dc/99238/ec179819d8f51bfd242a9efa139b6861.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Question_12624-markdown","title":"Which is better for intimacy, THC or CBD?","slug":"which-is-better-for-intimacy-thc-or-cbd","content":"**\"I often use both THC and CBD in my daily life and have used both in the bedroom but I’m curious which one will supply the best results”** \n \nCharles A.\n\n_________________________ \n There is a long-time [history of cannabis and sex working together](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-and-sex-a-brief-world-history). Many people may not think about cannabis enhancing their sex lives. For years, many cannabis users have sworn that the plant helps with their sexual stamina and improves sexual sensations.  \n \n[THC](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/thc/) is the most well-known cannabinoid found in marijuana plants and can benefit various medical and recreational uses. THC is often associated with its psychoactive properties and is predominant in most strains on the market. It is important to remember that too much THC can actually kill sexual desire or cause anxiety and even paranoia. For some men, too much THC can cause erectile dysfunction; that said, the right amount can enhance sexual experiences; it’s trial and error.  \n \n[CBD](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/cbd/) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid. CBD lacks the psychoactive effects of THC because it does not bind with the same receptors in the [endocannabinoid system](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system). CBD can be a great addition to your sexual encounters as it can help you and your partner relax. Sex can certainly come with many problems, but luckily CBD can help with many of them. [CBD lowers anxiety](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/understanding-how-cbd-can-calm-your-anxiety) which can be a primary reason for sexual difficulties; it can relieve pain which is another common issue during sex. CBD can ramp up your pleasure as it increases pleasurable sensations.  \n \nIf you’re looking to bring down the heat once the magic has played out, a CBD-dominant tincture or hybrid strain such as [Charlotte’s Web](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/charlotte's-web) could be great options for relaxing cuddles. Finding a proper dose can be done by experimenting with [THC: CBD ratios]( https://www.hellomd.com/articles/quick-guide-to-finding-your-ideal-cbd-to-thc-ratio).  \n \nTHC strains can help you bring up the volume in the bedroom. You may consider [Indica-hybrid strains](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-indica-sativa-and-hybrid-explained) that promote arousal, euphoria, and feeling uplifted, such as [Northern Lights](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/northern-lights). There are many different consumption methods to consider for those special nights. Maybe you want to enjoy a joint while watching late-night movies, pass around a [vape pen](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/the-benefits-of-vaping-medical-marijuana), or make a [DIY-infused recipe]( https://www.hellomd.com/articles/diy-recipe-gluten-free-low-sugar-chocolate-chip-marijuana-cookies) with one another for some unique homemade edibles. There is a long-time history of [cannabis and sex](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-and-sex-a-brief-world-history) working together. Many people may not think about cannabis enhancing their sex lives. For years now, many [male cannabis users](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-and-male-sexual-performance) have sworn that the plant helps with their sexual stamina and improves sexual sensation. Research is beginning to back up these claims made by consumers. There have also been some fascinating reports of women using [cannabis-based gel](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-based-gel-could-reduce-painful-sex-for-women) to reduce painful sex.\n\n**THC** [(Tetrahydrocannabinol)](https://www.livescience.com/24553-what-is-thc.html) is the most well-known cannabinoid found in marijuana plants. THC can be beneficial in various medical and recreational uses, and is often associated with its psychoactive properties THC iss predominant in most strains on the market. But, remember too much THC can actually kill sexual desire or cause anxiety and even paranoia. It may also cause erectile dysfunction for some men. That said, just the right amount can enhance sexual experience, it’s really trial and error.\n\n**CBD** [(cannabidiol)](https://www.webmd.com/vitamins/ai/ingredientmono-1439/cannabidiol-cbd) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid. CBD lacks the psychoactive effects of THC because it does not bind with the same receptors in the [endocannabinoid system (ECS)](https://hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system). CBD can be a great addition to your sexual encounters as it can help you relax! \n\nWhile THC can help build up euphoria and that desire for sex, CBD can be perfect once you're all wrapped up in the sheets and looking to wind down. Really, it’s up to each individual to decide which works better – THC or CBD! Women who had consumed marijuana daily reported having sex 7.1 times a month, on average. For men, it was 6.9 times. Women who did not use cannabis at all, reported sex 6 times a month, on average, while men who did not use weed had sex an average of 5.6 times a month. This is with cannabis that contains THC.\n\nThe [University of Kansas Medical School](https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/02791072.1982.10471911?journalCode=ujpd20) conducted a 2012 study that revealed cannabis enhanced sexual desire and performance in respondents. While doctors do not know precisely how cannabis manages to do this, they see that it promotes the release of [oxytocin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxytocin), the \"bonding hormone\" that makes sexual partners feel close. Because of this, (cannabis with THC) has often been classified as a sexual stimulant, and consumers have been taking advantage of it for years to have amazing sex and perform better.\n\nCole B.\n\n____________________________\n\n![Untitled48.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled48_54f1f00bad.png)\n\nIf you are looking to bring down the heat once the magic has played out, a CBD-dominant tincture or a hybrid strain could be great options for relaxing cuddles and watching a movie. It is a potent anxiolytic and is very effective in reducing anxiety. **Tetrahydrocannabinol** or [THC](https://hellomd.com/tag/thc/) can reduce anxiety when taken in low doses. However, it can exacerbate anxiety at high doses and cause panic attacks depending on the consumer. Every person responds differently to cannabis, and what a high dose is to one person, it may not be to another.\n\nWhen taking a closer look at medical studies, it is evident that the chemical makeup of Cannabidiol is the primary cannabinoid and ingredient which [treats anxiety effectively](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4604171/). While a healthy ratio of CBD to THC can effectively treat anxiety, too much THC in an anxious person can lead to feelings of paranoia. Alternatively, CBD has the opposite effect. Studies have shown that CBD can, on its own, lower, and in certain circumstances, eliminate anxiety. \n\nScientists believe that CBD works to reduce anxiety because of how it interacts with the serotonin receptors in the brain. CBD blocks the reabsorption of serotonin in the brain, making serotonin more available in the synaptic space increasing serotonin signaling.  \n\nWith all this being said, for those looking to remedy anxiety disorders with cannabis, your treatment will rely more heavily on your dosing and less on the specifics of the strain. Using cannabis is highly individual, so it is essential to first experiment with some trial and error to discover your perfect dose.  \n \nDavid T.\n\n__________________________________ \n\n![Untitledval108.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval108_46242e6f55.png)\n \nThose looking to use medical marijuana to treat anxiety should be in the market for strains with higher levels of CBD; this can be a flower, tincture, vape pen, or edible. For those just beginning their medical cannabis journey, a CBD-dominant tincture or hybrid strain is highly recommended. Finding your proper dose can be done quickly by experimenting with ratios, starting with a very high [CBD:THC ratio](https://hellomd.com/articles/quick-guide-to-finding-your-ideal-cbd-to-thc-ratio) such as 30:1 or 10:1. Take a small dose and titrate up as necessary.\n\nWhen treating anxiety with cannabis, your best bet is a low dose of a high CBD strain or a hybrid strain with higher CBD levels. If you’re looking for immediate relief from anxiety from something like an anxiety attack, vaping CBD oil may be a good idea as the effects kick in almost automatically. However, suppose you want a cannabis product that will allow you to maintain a steady flow of relief throughout the day. In that case, ingesting CBD sublingually or orally at regular intervals may be a better option. \n\nSo, while a few puffs of a CBD vape pen may provide immediate anxiety relief, a better long-term solution would be allowing CBD to build up in your system through consistent CBD ingestion. [VerIlife]((https://www.verilife.com/what-is-marijuana/what-products-are-right-for-me).) gives a great explanation of how to find your correct dosing and correct cannabis products.\n\nOverall, when treating anxiety with cannabis, CBD is most often the better option. But, again, every person is different, and for some, THC may be more stress-relieving than CBD. If you’re just starting the use of cannabis for anxiety, it is recommended that you start with CBD over THC.\n\nAnne E.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1,"src":"/static/223e10ef0d2dbd3599a6bcdfb3475b56/ee604/f74d0f40c726fced13de6df1856eadfb.png","srcSet":"/static/223e10ef0d2dbd3599a6bcdfb3475b56/69585/f74d0f40c726fced13de6df1856eadfb.png 200w,\n/static/223e10ef0d2dbd3599a6bcdfb3475b56/497c6/f74d0f40c726fced13de6df1856eadfb.png 400w,\n/static/223e10ef0d2dbd3599a6bcdfb3475b56/ee604/f74d0f40c726fced13de6df1856eadfb.png 800w,\n/static/223e10ef0d2dbd3599a6bcdfb3475b56/f3583/f74d0f40c726fced13de6df1856eadfb.png 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/223e10ef0d2dbd3599a6bcdfb3475b56/58556/f74d0f40c726fced13de6df1856eadfb.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/223e10ef0d2dbd3599a6bcdfb3475b56/61e93/f74d0f40c726fced13de6df1856eadfb.webp 200w,\n/static/223e10ef0d2dbd3599a6bcdfb3475b56/1f5c5/f74d0f40c726fced13de6df1856eadfb.webp 400w,\n/static/223e10ef0d2dbd3599a6bcdfb3475b56/58556/f74d0f40c726fced13de6df1856eadfb.webp 800w,\n/static/223e10ef0d2dbd3599a6bcdfb3475b56/99238/f74d0f40c726fced13de6df1856eadfb.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Question_12582-markdown","title":"Can medical marijuana help me lose weight?","slug":"can-medical-marijuana-help-me-lose-weight","content":"**\"I recently read that certain strains of medical marijuana can help me shed some pounds. It can work to boost your metabolism so you burn off calories more quickly. In some cases, it can act as an [appetite suppressant](https://hellomd.com/articles/using-cbd-as-a-tool-for-weight-loss)  or turn bad white fat, which stores energy, into brown fat, which burns calories and helps control weight.\n\nIt’s also interesting to note that one cannabinoid that can help manage your weight is known as tetrahydrocannabivarin, or [THCV](https://hellomd.com/articles/psychoactive-thcv-the-cannabinoid-that-kills-your-appetite). It is similar in structure to THC and produces some mild psychoactive effects, but it can also act as an appetite suppressant.\n\nSome strains that are good for appetite suppression include Alpha OG, [Cherry Pie](https://hellomd.com/strains/cherry-pie), and Pineapple Purps.\n\nMorris James\n\n-------------------------\n\n![The cannabinoid CBN is found in cannabis and will help you sleep better](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_05_at_4_20_42_PM_2e188ec199.png)\n\nTHCV is often found in higher concentrations in Sativa strains, especially in African landrace strains. [Landrace strains](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-landrace-strains-what-they-are-and-why-theyre-hot) are genetically pure strains of cannabis, with histories that can go back thousands of years and are associated with specific regions, such as Africa, spread from their original source in Central Asia.\n\nOne prominent African landrace strain reputed to help with [appetite suppression](https://hellomd.com/questions-and-answers/does-durban-poison-really-suppress-appetite) and weight loss is [Durban Poison](https://hellomd.com/strains/durban-poison). Named after the South African port city of Durban, this strain was brought to the United States in the 1970s by renowned cannabis breeder Ed Rosenthal. \n\n[Doug’s Varin](https://hellomd.com/strains/doug's-varin) has an even higher amount of THCV. It’s hard to find but boasts an unprecedented 6:7 THC to THCV ratio. The strain could also play a role in managing blood sugar, and helping medical marijuana patients suffering from panic attacks, stress, fatigue, and PTSD. The high THCV content could also be helpful in alleviating convulsions, making Doug’s Varin a choice worth considering for patients with Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy.\n\nSparks McCall\n\n--------------------\n![Indica strains are better for a good night's sleep.](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_12_26_at_7_14_23_PM_2f2ea5bcfb.png)\n\nSativa medical marijuana strains sometimes work to suppress appetite. For example, you might want to try [Red Congolese](https://hellomd.com/strains/red-congolese). It is a mix of African, Mexican, and Afghani landrace genetics, and has bright, classic Sativa effects, which will have you buzzing to get things done. \n\n[Blue Dream](https://hellomd.com/strains/blue-dream) is a Sativa-dominant hybrid that’s extremely popular with users in Colorado and Oregon. Originating in California, it combines the relaxing effects of Blueberry and the mentally stimulating properties of Haze. Other possible health benefits include relief from different types of pain, stemming from fibromyalgia, arthritis, and menstrual issues. It might also help those suffering from depression and anxiety.\n\nAlso, keep in mind that you shouldn’t rely on medical marijuana or any medication alone to help you lose weight. It should be part of a [larger holistic plan](https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/weight-loss/in-depth/weight-loss/art-20047752) that helps you burn more calories than you consume. The changes could include setting realistic goals. Thinking you’ll starve yourself for a week but then giving into your hunger pangs will undermine your diet and present other health risks besides.\n\nOther weight-loss measures include staying more active, eating healthy (but delicious) foods, and making lifestyle changes you can adhere to for long-term success.\n\nNigel\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.6129032258064515,"src":"/static/501017a0fc7ba8c120b92c9f0268b803/14b42/c4a65e0df50f8284469038718f4651eb.jpg","srcSet":"/static/501017a0fc7ba8c120b92c9f0268b803/f836f/c4a65e0df50f8284469038718f4651eb.jpg 200w,\n/static/501017a0fc7ba8c120b92c9f0268b803/2244e/c4a65e0df50f8284469038718f4651eb.jpg 400w,\n/static/501017a0fc7ba8c120b92c9f0268b803/14b42/c4a65e0df50f8284469038718f4651eb.jpg 800w,\n/static/501017a0fc7ba8c120b92c9f0268b803/47498/c4a65e0df50f8284469038718f4651eb.jpg 1200w,\n/static/501017a0fc7ba8c120b92c9f0268b803/0e329/c4a65e0df50f8284469038718f4651eb.jpg 1600w,\n/static/501017a0fc7ba8c120b92c9f0268b803/c939a/c4a65e0df50f8284469038718f4651eb.jpg 3426w","srcWebp":"/static/501017a0fc7ba8c120b92c9f0268b803/58556/c4a65e0df50f8284469038718f4651eb.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/501017a0fc7ba8c120b92c9f0268b803/61e93/c4a65e0df50f8284469038718f4651eb.webp 200w,\n/static/501017a0fc7ba8c120b92c9f0268b803/1f5c5/c4a65e0df50f8284469038718f4651eb.webp 400w,\n/static/501017a0fc7ba8c120b92c9f0268b803/58556/c4a65e0df50f8284469038718f4651eb.webp 800w,\n/static/501017a0fc7ba8c120b92c9f0268b803/99238/c4a65e0df50f8284469038718f4651eb.webp 1200w,\n/static/501017a0fc7ba8c120b92c9f0268b803/7c22d/c4a65e0df50f8284469038718f4651eb.webp 1600w,\n/static/501017a0fc7ba8c120b92c9f0268b803/c2e09/c4a65e0df50f8284469038718f4651eb.webp 3426w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Question_12572-markdown","title":"Can marijuana help me to sleep better? Having enough shut-eye gives us energy, keeps us focused and productive, boosts the immune system so we can fight off infections, and provides many other health benefits.\n\nA lack of sleep can have the opposite effect, leaving us dispirited and depressed, and susceptible to a wide range of physical and mental health problems.\n\n![The Kiva Petra Mint is an exceptional microdose and helps many people sleep better at night!](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_11_17_at_1_07_29_PM_e99402fbcb.png)\nThe Kiva Petra Mint is a popular low dose mint.\n\nThe stats bear out the size of the sleeping issue. [Up to 70 million people](https://www.forbes.com/sites/ajherrington/2021/03/17/can-cannabis-help-you-get-a-good-nights-sleep/?sh=21ed65f1106b) in this country are affected by sleep disorders, spending $70 billion a year on sleep aids, 65% of which goes to medications. Also, 30 to 35% of us suffer temporary symptoms of insomnia at one time or other, with it being a chronic condition in 10% of people.\n\nThe sleep problem has been made worse by the [pressures of the Covid-19 pandemic](https://www.forbes.com/sites/ajherrington/2021/12/31/marijuana-is-replacing-alcohol-for-nearly-half-of-cannabis-consumers-during-the-pandemic/?sh=633f22891fb6). A huge number of adults are turning from alcohol to weed to get a better sleep, as well deal with other conditions, such as stress, anxiety, and depression. \n\nCannabis may be used to address a number of sleep disorders, ranging from insomnia and sleep apnea to night terrors and circadian rhythm disorders. Anyone who has gone into slumber land or has experienced couchlock after consuming weed knows that the substance has a powerful potential for sleep.\n\nMarijuana works by triggering receptors in our endocannabinoid system (ECS), which help regulate hormones, immunity, pain, hunger, and (drum roll!) sleep. Weed cannabinoids that are known for inducing a good sleep include THC, CBD, and CBN. THC is known for its psychoactive effects and its ability to help with sleep. CBD is a non-psychoactive compound and may also work to make you sleep, though in some people it may spark wakefulness (it depends on how your body reacts to it).\n\n![Wana Brands gummies are a popular edible and can be used as a sleep aid.](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_11_17_at_1_08_56_PM_6440bb1268.png)\nEdibles, like Wana Brand gummies, are often used as sleep aids.\n\nCBN is often associated with THC products that have aged over time, and may also serve as a sleep aid, though more research is required to prove this.\n\nTerpenes found in cannabis may also contribute to better sleep, including beta-myrcene and limonene, which have calming effects, beta-caryophyllene for stress-reducing effects, and linalool for sedative and pain-relieving properties.\n\nSchererDelight\n\n---------------\n\nFinding out what works best for you may require some experimentation. You may want to try cannabis products with different levels of CBD, THC, or CBN. If you are just starting out, going low and slow is a good way to proceed.\n\nWith THC particularly it might be a good idea to start with a low dosage, 2mg for example, and go up from there, if you need it, to 10mg or even higher. Also try different brands and consumption methods, including smoking, vaping, edibles, gel caps, and others. Some cannabis brands specialize in sleep disorders, so seek these out.\n\nPManza\n\n--------------------------\n![Jetty Extracts has a variety of solventless products with live rosin.](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_11_17_at_1_11_38_PM_4ae9aa5b5c.png)\nJetty Extracts has a variety of solventless products with live rosin.\n\nThrough our YouTube channel and article archive, [HelloMD](https://hellomd.com/) has provided a lot of information about how medical marijuana can help with sleep and good products to try if you are new to the field. These are some of them:\n\n- the amount of body fat you have\n- how frequently do you ingest marijuana\n- the sensitivity of a drug test depends on how much you may smoke/ingest\n\nAlcohol and other drugs can vanish from the body in as little as a few hours. Weed, on the other hand, lasts far longer.\n\nTetrahydrocannabinol, or [THC](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/thc), can be detected in **urine**, **blood**, and **hair** for several days after usage, although saliva tests can only identify THC for a few hours. This is due to the way THC is metabolized in the body.\n\nThe short answer - in a standard blood test marijuana may show for 1 to 2 days on average. If you are a heavy consumer it may be detectable for as long as 25 days. It is highly variable.\n\nTHC is a lipid-soluble molecule that has been verified in your system. This implies it binds to fat in the body, increasing lean mass. Check out this [HelloMD article](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-long-does-cannabis-stay-in-your-system) on the topic.\n\nPatty J.\n_____________________\n\n![Hello2-min (1).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello2_min_1_2f3b250795.png)\n\nI can't answer from a doctor's perspective, but I have been to the phlebotomist quite a few times and have had my blood work done. No one ever mentioned THC or cannabis and I am quite certain that there was a good amount of THC in my blood during the blood draw. I would imagine, that if they are not looking for it, they will not pull it up in a standard test. If however, someone is doing a test specifically for that, to be on the safe side, I would not consume for a month before the test. Hope this helps!\n\nRyan M.\n_____________________\n\nNo, the only way THC will show up in a blood test is if the doctor is testing for it specifically. Since a standard blood test is not looking for the presence of any THC, none will be detected. Hope this helps!\n\nAlex M.\n_____________________\n\n![Hello3-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello3_min_5e77197f9f.png)\n\nYou may be required to take a THC blood test in certain circumstances - particularly if you are in a rehabilitation program or have an employer with strict anti-cannabis rules. However, please keep in mind your \"standard blood test\" will often not test for THC. It is usually a Complete Blood Count (CBC) panel that will provide diagnostic information on your liver, kidney, and blood cell status. The primary function of this test is to detect diseases. \n\nTypically, cannabis will stay in your system for about 1-2 days after consumption. However, if you are a heavier user, it can stay for up to 7 days or even longer. With that said, variables that can affect how long THC is present in the blood include metabolism, body mass index, and frequency and amount of cannabis consumed. If you are going to have a THC blood test soon, I suggest abstaining from cannabis consumption for three weeks to be safe! \n\nVeronica B.\n_____________________\n\n![Hello1-min (1).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_1_242fa4bae4.png)\n\nLike others have mentioned here, THC from cannabis won’t show up in a “standard” blood test, so your employer, doctor, or whoever is requesting the THC blood test would have to be looking for it specifically. Unlike urine tests, blood tests detect the active presence of THC in the bloodstream.\n\nIn the case of smoked marijuana, THC peaks rapidly in the first few minutes after inhaling, often to levels above 100 ng/ml in blood plasma. It then declines quickly to single-digit levels within an hour. \n\nHigh THC levels are therefore a good indication that the subject has smoked marijuana recently. THC can remain at low but detectable levels of 1-2 ng/ml for 8 hours or more without any measurable signs of impairment in one-time users. In chronic users, detectable amounts of blood THC can persist for days.\n\nCheck out this article for more information re: [THC blood tests](http://www.canorml.org/healthfacts/drugtestguide/drugtestdetection.html#blood).\n\nMelissa P.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1,"src":"/static/313fd9d2441b41b5f6a47f1aec93c721/97f33/551ad7cc624387db30808d61a806fac5.png","srcSet":"/static/313fd9d2441b41b5f6a47f1aec93c721/69585/551ad7cc624387db30808d61a806fac5.png 200w,\n/static/313fd9d2441b41b5f6a47f1aec93c721/497c6/551ad7cc624387db30808d61a806fac5.png 400w,\n/static/313fd9d2441b41b5f6a47f1aec93c721/97f33/551ad7cc624387db30808d61a806fac5.png 483w","srcWebp":"/static/313fd9d2441b41b5f6a47f1aec93c721/e4e06/551ad7cc624387db30808d61a806fac5.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/313fd9d2441b41b5f6a47f1aec93c721/61e93/551ad7cc624387db30808d61a806fac5.webp 200w,\n/static/313fd9d2441b41b5f6a47f1aec93c721/1f5c5/551ad7cc624387db30808d61a806fac5.webp 400w,\n/static/313fd9d2441b41b5f6a47f1aec93c721/e4e06/551ad7cc624387db30808d61a806fac5.webp 483w","sizes":"(max-width: 483px) 100vw, 483px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Question_12571-markdown","title":"Which is better for sleep — CBD or THC?","slug":"which-is-better-for-sleep-cbd-or-thc","content":"**I've had a really hard time going to sleep and staying asleep. I am wondering if there is a difference between THC and CBD and which may help me get over this insomnia.**\n\nMitchell Y.\n\n------------------\n\nOK, I have some information for you to sleep on. Sleep disorders such as insomnia and sleep apnea are quite common in this country, and more and more people are trying cannabis as a sleep aid. This is, in fact, not new. Marijuana has been used as a [sleep aid for hundreds of years](https://hellomd.ca/articles/medical-marijuana-could-help-insomniacs-sleep-better). \n\nMore recently research has shown that the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) plays a role in regulating sleep. Other research shows that marijuana cannabinoids tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) may also play a part in regulating the ECS, helping people to establish more regular sleeping patterns.\n\nThere is a [growing body of evidence](https://www.sleepfoundation.org/natural-sleep-aids/marijuana-for-sleep) to suggest that cannabis helps with conditions such as insomnia, though there is the question of whether it may be more beneficial for short-term use, whereas long-term use might actually cause problems with sleep.\n\n![Some cannabis products specifically target sleep - like the Dosist pen](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_11_11_at_3_29_19_PM_2051231cc9.png)\nThe Dosist pen 'Rest' targets sleep\n\n\nWith certain conditions, including chronic pain, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), restless leg syndrome (RLS), and multiple sclerosis, cannabis may help people fall asleep faster, wake up less during the night, and enjoy better sleep quality overall. Other people report getting relief, and better sleep, when suffering from insomnia, anxiety, and pain.\n\nTHC typically works as a sedative, but it can be stimulating for some users, especially for those who are new to using cannabis or taking higher doses. In these cases, using marijuana before bed may result in a longer time of falling asleep. CBD appears to promote alertness at lower doses, and sleepiness at higher doses. \n\nOne study suggests that [CBD is more promising](https://hellomd.ca/articles/how-can-i-use-cannabis-to-ease-my-insomnia) as a treatment because even though THC may lessen sleep latency, long-term sleep patterns could be negatively affected.\n\nTHC improves sleep by reducing REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. REM sleep is associated with reducing dreams, which leads to better quality of sleep. However, REM sleep is a normal part of the body’s function and prolonged suppression could lead to serious sleeping problems.\n\nOn the other hand, decreasing REM sleep may provide some help for people with PTSD, because nightmares are a common symptom, so less dreaming is good. \n\n[CBD may also have fewer side effects](https://hellomd.ca/articles/medical-marijuana-could-help-insomniacs-sleep-better) for users than THC, since it’s not psychoactive and has no effects on the gastrointestinal system.\n\nRonnieC\n\n--------------\n\nIt’s also worth looking at the most common strains of cannabis: indica and sativa. Sativa tends to be more stimulating and people tend to use it for an energy boost. Indica tends to be more relaxing, promoting feelings of relaxation and sleepiness.\n\nSo many users suggest that indica is a better place to start looking for a sleep aid. But if you want to avoid nightmares, then sativa is worth exploring.\n\nUtopia Gilly\n\n-------------\n\nThere are studies that show that [CBD can work well](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/cbd-and-sleep#research) at high doses to promote sleep.\n\n![Sleep Synergy targets sleep with CBD and CBN](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_11_11_at_3_32_04_PM_657049cf0b.png)\n\nOne study worked on the basis that levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, usually hit their peak in the morning. However, those suffering from insomnia may have high cortisol levels at night, making them wake up. CBD was shown to reduce cortisol levels and help the study participants get better sleep.\n\nBasically, the best way to find out what will work best for you is to try different strains with different combinations of THC and CBD. Also try different methods of consumption, including smoking, vaping, pills, edibles, tinctures and so on.\n\nFor example, if you smoke or vape cannabis, you will find the onset (how fast it acts) is quick, but also ends quickly. With edibles, it takes longer for the cannabinoids to kick in, but the effects last longer — so these might be worth exploring by those who want a long night of sleep.\n\nJohnnyBgud\n\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.5037593984962405,"src":"/static/4e4f0806e175e97e5c3849d2c6426246/14b42/70428b9d7d95579148d4132f890ee088.jpg","srcSet":"/static/4e4f0806e175e97e5c3849d2c6426246/f836f/70428b9d7d95579148d4132f890ee088.jpg 200w,\n/static/4e4f0806e175e97e5c3849d2c6426246/2244e/70428b9d7d95579148d4132f890ee088.jpg 400w,\n/static/4e4f0806e175e97e5c3849d2c6426246/14b42/70428b9d7d95579148d4132f890ee088.jpg 800w,\n/static/4e4f0806e175e97e5c3849d2c6426246/47498/70428b9d7d95579148d4132f890ee088.jpg 1200w,\n/static/4e4f0806e175e97e5c3849d2c6426246/0e329/70428b9d7d95579148d4132f890ee088.jpg 1600w,\n/static/4e4f0806e175e97e5c3849d2c6426246/93dd1/70428b9d7d95579148d4132f890ee088.jpg 6240w","srcWebp":"/static/4e4f0806e175e97e5c3849d2c6426246/58556/70428b9d7d95579148d4132f890ee088.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/4e4f0806e175e97e5c3849d2c6426246/61e93/70428b9d7d95579148d4132f890ee088.webp 200w,\n/static/4e4f0806e175e97e5c3849d2c6426246/1f5c5/70428b9d7d95579148d4132f890ee088.webp 400w,\n/static/4e4f0806e175e97e5c3849d2c6426246/58556/70428b9d7d95579148d4132f890ee088.webp 800w,\n/static/4e4f0806e175e97e5c3849d2c6426246/99238/70428b9d7d95579148d4132f890ee088.webp 1200w,\n/static/4e4f0806e175e97e5c3849d2c6426246/7c22d/70428b9d7d95579148d4132f890ee088.webp 1600w,\n/static/4e4f0806e175e97e5c3849d2c6426246/7e4f0/70428b9d7d95579148d4132f890ee088.webp 6240w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Question_12570-markdown","title":"What are weed topicals and how do they work?","slug":"what-are-weed-topicals-and-how-do-they-work","content":"**I’ve got a pretty rigorous workout schedule causing me a fair amount of muscle pain when I’m done. They come in a [wide variety of forms](https://hellomd.com/articles/using-cannabis-infused-topicals-for-localized-relief), such oils, creams, lotions, balms, mud masks, and more. They are all infused with potent cannabinoids, particularly tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), and sometimes terpenes as well. \n\nWhen cannabis is ingested or inhaled, you can feel the effects quickly throughout your system or in a manner of hours, depending on the method of consumption (for example, smoking vs. edibles). But with weed topicals, the effects are usually just felt locally, on the area where they are applied (in your case, certain sore muscles).\n\n[Cannabis topicals work](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-topicals-provide-relief-for-sore-muscles-and-pain) by being absorbed through the skin and binding to our CB2 receptors, which are found throughout the body as part of the [endocannabinoid system (ECS)](https://www.healthline.com/health/endocannabinoid-system). The endocannabinoids (molecules produced by the body) bind to the receptors to achieve effects such as relieving pain, reducing inflammation, boosting the immune system, and much more.\n\nCannabinoids from cannabis act in much the same way. THC will bind with the ECS receptors in a similar way to the endocannabinoids, to provide pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects. CBD also reacts with the ECS without THC’s psychoactive effects. While it doesn’t bind to the same receptors as THC, it may work by preventing endocannabinoids from being broken down, so they have more of an effect on your body.\n\nMany people turn to topicals for ordinary aches and pains, such as sore, tense or injured muscles. The cannabinoids seep into the skin, and help to ease tension while providing localized pain relief. Marijuana’s anti-inflammatory effects also help reduce pain and inflammation at the site of any sprained, pulled or injured muscle. Topicals are also sometimes applied to arthritic joints to provide pain relief\n\nArnisB\n\n----------------\n\nAnother thing that needs to be pointed out is that THC is particularly potent when it comes to fighting pain, but some people might avoid it because they don’t want to get high, because it might interfere with their work or ability to function in normal activities. But [THC used in topicals]( https://hellomd.com/articles/thc-in-cannabis-topicals-why-it-matters) can give you the best of both worlds. It goes to the source of pain quickly, in a targeted manner,  and doesn’t make you high. Because it skips the bloodstream, cannabis topicals are undetectable in drug tests and don’t upset your ability to function. \n\nChronic pain, menstrual cramps, migraine headaches, arthritis, and skin conditions are some of the things that it may be able to help you with.\n\nVirginiaValen\n\n---------------\n\nSometimes [transdermal patches](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-transdermal-patches-medicate-through-your-skin)  are discussed as similar way to treat pain. But they do work differently than topicals. The patches with cannabinoids and other ingredients are applied to the skin to provide localized relief, but enter the bloodstream after that. This might not make a difference with a [CBD patch](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/cbd-patches-for-pain#how-they-work), but could make a difference with one that has a lot of THC. However, while its psychoactive effects may be felt, they would also be released much slower method than other forms of cannabis consumption, so wouldn’t usually be as potent.\n\nJohnNth\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,/9j/2wBDABALDA4MChAODQ4SERATGCgaGBYWGDEjJR0oOjM9PDkzODdASFxOQERXRTc4UG1RV19iZ2hnPk1xeXBkeFxlZ2P/2wBDARESEhgVGC8aGi9jQjhCY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2P/wgARCAAMABQDASIAAhEBAxEB/8QAFwAAAwEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMEBf/EABUBAQEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAED/9oADAMBAAIQAxAAAAFj8NQ2EYU//8QAGhAAAgMBAQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAgMAARIRE//aAAgBAQABBQKlDwFDl1UDfdgTZhKn/8QAFREBAQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH/2gAIAQMBAT8BR//EABQRAQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABD/2gAIAQIBAT8BP//EABwQAQACAQUAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEAAiEQERIiUf/aAAgBAQAGPwI3ys9iE4lsTrZNP//EABoQAQADAQEBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEAETEhobH/2gAIAQEAAT8hKdw6Q9OdUsyHPJWvnxC4DO0xNbP/2gAMAwEAAgADAAAAEOQP/8QAFhEBAQEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASEA/9oACAEDAQE/EFbcpv/EABYRAQEBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEAIf/aAAgBAgEBPxAJNv/EABsQAQADAQADAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEAETEhQVFx/9oACAEBAAE/EAmKNmWeI+CtqI2jkcEaODqshxeecF+HSahqFLfcZdSvVXZ//9k=","aspectRatio":1.6129032258064515,"src":"/static/0942e5605f71ff9218ea56be2914c763/14b42/19937bbfaf244ebe8537f38abdc97c07.jpg","srcSet":"/static/0942e5605f71ff9218ea56be2914c763/f836f/19937bbfaf244ebe8537f38abdc97c07.jpg 200w,\n/static/0942e5605f71ff9218ea56be2914c763/2244e/19937bbfaf244ebe8537f38abdc97c07.jpg 400w,\n/static/0942e5605f71ff9218ea56be2914c763/14b42/19937bbfaf244ebe8537f38abdc97c07.jpg 800w,\n/static/0942e5605f71ff9218ea56be2914c763/47498/19937bbfaf244ebe8537f38abdc97c07.jpg 1200w,\n/static/0942e5605f71ff9218ea56be2914c763/0e329/19937bbfaf244ebe8537f38abdc97c07.jpg 1600w,\n/static/0942e5605f71ff9218ea56be2914c763/08550/19937bbfaf244ebe8537f38abdc97c07.jpg 3832w","srcWebp":"/static/0942e5605f71ff9218ea56be2914c763/58556/19937bbfaf244ebe8537f38abdc97c07.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/0942e5605f71ff9218ea56be2914c763/61e93/19937bbfaf244ebe8537f38abdc97c07.webp 200w,\n/static/0942e5605f71ff9218ea56be2914c763/1f5c5/19937bbfaf244ebe8537f38abdc97c07.webp 400w,\n/static/0942e5605f71ff9218ea56be2914c763/58556/19937bbfaf244ebe8537f38abdc97c07.webp 800w,\n/static/0942e5605f71ff9218ea56be2914c763/99238/19937bbfaf244ebe8537f38abdc97c07.webp 1200w,\n/static/0942e5605f71ff9218ea56be2914c763/7c22d/19937bbfaf244ebe8537f38abdc97c07.webp 1600w,\n/static/0942e5605f71ff9218ea56be2914c763/0bad5/19937bbfaf244ebe8537f38abdc97c07.webp 3832w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Question_12569-markdown","title":"Why are low temperatures so important for dabbing?","slug":"why-are-low-temperatures-so-important-for-dabbing","content":"**I dab concentrates using a torch. I've been told that I’m heating them up too much. Why do dabs need lower temperatures?**\n\nMark H\n\n--------------------\nIt’s the difference between smoke and vapor. Dabbing concentrates allows you to consume cannabis in more potent forms than other methods of consumption. As you know, you have a [dab rig](https://hellomd.com/articles/why-do-some-patients-dab-medical-marijuana), something like a bong, but with a metal or quartz nail instead of a glass bowl. After the nail is heated, a dab of concentrate is dropped or pressed on the nail. It is vaporized at low temperatures and turned to smoke at higher ones.\n\nIt’s good to know this if you are worried about the dangers of smoking cannabis, which can [expose you to unhealthy compounds]( https://hellomd.com/articles/dabbing-marijuana-for-good-health) and even carcinogens. So [controlling the temperature](https://www.healthline.com/health-news/heating-up-marijuana-could-increase-cancer-risk#Smoke-vs.-vapor) of dabbing helps reduce this risk.\n\n![Screen Shot 2021-10-27 at 8.30.00 PM.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_10_27_at_8_30_00_PM_4d0daf7ce3.png)\n\nThe [Piranha Quartz](https://www.420science.com/products/piranha-quartz-one-piece-beaker-rig-w-banger) One Piece Beaker Dab Rig w/Banger\n\nAlso, the lower temperatures, producing vapor, can better preserve the cannabinoids in the concentrates, as well as the terpenes that give the concentrate its flavor and aroma and interact with the other cannabinoids to provide various health benefits. Dabbing at high temperatures can leave you with an unpleasant burnt taste.\n\nIt is hard to control the temperature of dabs using a blowtorch with a nail, and many people burn the concentrate because of this. That is why I prefer using an e-nail. This electronic device connects to a controller box that heats the nail according to your preference, allowing you to regulate the temperature exactly. For the best results (to get vapor rather than smoke), it’s best to set your e-nail to temperatures at 610 degrees F or lower.\n\nPeggy Mucho\n\n------------------\n![Screen Shot 2021-10-30 at 3.06.43 PM.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_10_30_at_3_06_43_PM_fd00129c28.png)\n\n\nIf you are interested in trying dabbing but don’t know how to do it, HelloMD has a series of Cannabis 101 videos on YouTube, including this one on [how to dab concentrates](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDYiH61QvzQ).  It covers everything from the equipment you need, to assembling the e-nail, to half-filling the dab rig with water, to heating it to the correct temperature.\n\nIf you do dab, do so safely. If you use a mini-blow torch and it accidentally leaks butane, there is a possibility of fire (so the e-nail is a safer bet). Many concentrates are also made with butane, which poses fire hazards to the producers and health risks to users.\n\nSo you need to learn [how to dab safely](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-to-dab-safely), including not using low-quality concentrates or nails. \n\nFrancine C\n\n-----------------------------\n\nI think you also need to point out that dabbing can be a pretty intense high. Some newbies can be really slammed if they dab too much the first time. So try a small amount at a low heat setting if you don’t want to get the spins or knocked out. (See: https://www.thrillist.com/lifestyle/nation/what-is-dabbing-a-complete-novices-guide-to-concentrates).\n\nBriazzz\n\n-------------------------------\n\nThat’s true: Be careful if you are new to dabbing. But there are also strong reasons to dab. Yes, it might appeal to recreational users who like the potency, and have a high tolerance,  but dabbing can also be useful for medical marijuana users. A fast-acting, potent dose might be what is needed to deal with health conditions such as chronic pain or PTSD. People also dab because they want a better medicinal experience than smoking marijuana. Dab concentrates have less plant matter and more cannabinoids than smoking, so patients can get the dose they need without as much smoke or vapor getting into their throat and lungs.\n\nPeggy Mucho\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,/9j/2wBDABALDA4MChAODQ4SERATGCgaGBYWGDEjJR0oOjM9PDkzODdASFxOQERXRTc4UG1RV19iZ2hnPk1xeXBkeFxlZ2P/2wBDARESEhgVGC8aGi9jQjhCY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2P/wgARCAANABQDASIAAhEBAxEB/8QAGAAAAwEBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMEAQL/xAAWAQEBAQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABAAL/2gAMAwEAAhADEAAAAWr2BeCMs//EABsQAAICAwEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAISAAEDBBQh/9oACAEBAAEFAhV9nC05yhEuXZvxrn//xAAXEQADAQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASER/9oACAEDAQE/Aa1pT//EABYRAQEBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAhAf/aAAgBAgEBPwHYj//EABkQAAMBAQEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABMRESEP/aAAgBAQAGPwJTcguSMfKyi8//xAAdEAEAAgICAwAAAAAAAAAAAAABABEhURAxQWFx/9oACAEBAAE/IbDX2GY4sBNvc2t8lNoFMcTR5Z//2gAMAwEAAgADAAAAEF8f/8QAGBEAAgMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAFxkeH/2gAIAQMBAT8QTHmq0//EABYRAQEBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEQEf/aAAgBAgEBPxA6Bj//xAAbEAEAAwADAQAAAAAAAAAAAAABABEhMUFRYf/aAAgBAQABPxAPBZZsMzDiILC4ZSurj3Z6hJWQClc7zFR8GBqCPjP/2Q==","aspectRatio":1.5037593984962405,"src":"/static/08b266bf9680a65fea65ff60e2c5e200/14b42/ba0fd440b966f8104e686b77aa405a28.jpg","srcSet":"/static/08b266bf9680a65fea65ff60e2c5e200/f836f/ba0fd440b966f8104e686b77aa405a28.jpg 200w,\n/static/08b266bf9680a65fea65ff60e2c5e200/2244e/ba0fd440b966f8104e686b77aa405a28.jpg 400w,\n/static/08b266bf9680a65fea65ff60e2c5e200/14b42/ba0fd440b966f8104e686b77aa405a28.jpg 800w,\n/static/08b266bf9680a65fea65ff60e2c5e200/47498/ba0fd440b966f8104e686b77aa405a28.jpg 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/08b266bf9680a65fea65ff60e2c5e200/58556/ba0fd440b966f8104e686b77aa405a28.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/08b266bf9680a65fea65ff60e2c5e200/61e93/ba0fd440b966f8104e686b77aa405a28.webp 200w,\n/static/08b266bf9680a65fea65ff60e2c5e200/1f5c5/ba0fd440b966f8104e686b77aa405a28.webp 400w,\n/static/08b266bf9680a65fea65ff60e2c5e200/58556/ba0fd440b966f8104e686b77aa405a28.webp 800w,\n/static/08b266bf9680a65fea65ff60e2c5e200/99238/ba0fd440b966f8104e686b77aa405a28.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Question_12568-markdown","title":"Why does smoking weed cause red bloodshot eyes?","slug":"why-does-smoking-weed-cause-red-bloodshot-eyes","content":"**Every time I smoke I get red, bloodshot eyes. Is this the smoke that causes it? What can I do to stop it from happening?**\n\nMarvin P.\n\n-------------------------------\n\nBloodshot eyes have always been a sign that you’ve been smoking cannabis. However, it’s not the smoke that does this. It’s tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and other active cannabinoids that cause “[vasodilation](https://www.mcgill.ca/oss/article/did-you-know/its-not-smoke-joint-makes-your-eyes-red)” and may also make you feel dizzy.\n\nTHC lowers blood pressure, which in turn causes blood vessels and capillaries to dilate, which causes blood flow to increase, and can make the whites of the eyeballs appear red. THC and other cannabis compounds interact with cannabinoid receptors, which are part of the [endocannabinoid system (ECS)](https://hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system). They are found throughout your body, including your eyes.\n\n![Screen Shot 2021-10-27 at 7.46.45 PM.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_10_27_at_7_46_45_PM_77f7b23f48.png)\n\nCannabinoids bind to cannabinoid receptors and cause the dilation (widening) of the blood vessels, increasing the blood flow to these areas. This in turn decreases the blood pressure, causing the red appearance and dizziness.\n\nIf you try other types of cannabis with substantial amounts of THC, such as edibles, you’ll have the same result even without the smoke.\n\nSo to prevent red-eye, one solution may be to use a low-THC strain of marijuana. But once you’ve got a lot of THC in your system, there’s not a lot you can do to stop red-eye from happening. You can try eye drops, use cold compresses or eye drops, or even drink water since sometimes dehydration can cause or contribute to having red eyes. These may help.\n\nAnd of course, there’s always the old standby of wearing sunglasses. You’ll look cool and nobody will see the color of your eyes.\n\nAlso, keep in mind that the reddening of your eyes is not harmful and they will eventually make the transition back to your usual pearly white.\n\nLawson\n\n-------------------- \n\nAs the blood pressure lowers when you smoke cannabis, the blood vessels and capillaries dilate, including the ocular capillaries. The increased blood flow to your eyeball causes the red appearance or bloodshot eyes. There are no serious health risks associated with your sudden red-eyed circumstance.\n\nWe should also point out that in some cases cannabis may actually [help our eyes and vision](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-does-cannabis-affect-your-eyes). There is some research that suggests the neuroprotective and antioxidant properties of CBD and THC may be able to help our vision and provide some protection against common diseases of the eye and optic nerve.\n\nOne area of eye health where cannabis may have a supporting role to play is [glaucoma](https://hellomd.com/articles/medical-marijuana-preserves-vision-and-reduces-glaucoma-pain) — a condition of increased pressure within the eyeball, causing gradual loss of sight. Usually, glaucoma is treated with medicated eye drops, which help to bring down intraocular pressure to normal levels. However, some glaucoma patients and eye specialists report that cannabis can also help reduce intraocular pressure and help preserve eyesight. \n\nBut on the downside, the effects may [only last three or four hours](https://www.verywellhealth.com/marijuana-and-glaucoma-3421696), so you would have to consume marijuana a number of times during the day to get its effects around the clock. While cannabis does lower eye pressure, it also lowers blood pressure. This might result in reduced blood supply to the optic nerve, which in turn might harm the optic nerve. \n\nMore research needs to be done. For now, you should start by consulting with an ophthalmologist. At the same time, get their advice on using medical marijuana as a [complementary or supplemental therapy](https://hellomd.com/articles/3-popular-questions-about-marijuana-and-seniors-answered) to traditional medication.\n\nAnnie HMD\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,/9j/2wBDABALDA4MChAODQ4SERATGCgaGBYWGDEjJR0oOjM9PDkzODdASFxOQERXRTc4UG1RV19iZ2hnPk1xeXBkeFxlZ2P/2wBDARESEhgVGC8aGi9jQjhCY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2P/wgARCAANABQDASIAAhEBAxEB/8QAGQAAAgMBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMBAgQF/8QAFQEBAQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAQP/2gAMAwEAAhADEAAAAUxtbOvEKif/xAAdEAABAgcAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADARECBBITMTNB/9oACAEBAAEFApaFWpW6VWILHTbP/8QAFBEBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEP/aAAgBAwEBPwE//8QAFBEBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEP/aAAgBAgEBPwE//8QAGhAAAgIDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAECERBBkf/aAAgBAQAGPwKRTvo0tYsZ/8QAHBAAAwABBQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAERMSFBcZGh/9oACAEBAAE/IUmK3GMEksTG0DQN4hOYTvP/2gAMAwEAAgADAAAAEOvv/8QAFxEBAQEBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAQARMf/aAAgBAwEBPxAMnt//xAAVEQEBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAf/aAAgBAgEBPxBH/8QAHBABAAIDAQEBAAAAAAAAAAAAAQARITFRQWHx/9oACAEBAAE/EEaGKNvin2ZDwesfkO2mJcsPQJ7RuAyAsoeSxL3H/9k=","aspectRatio":1.5037593984962405,"src":"/static/db89e30e0d954fa2824faef3dbad4c57/14b42/36f7c4f3d33d38ce942ded5b9a000053.jpg","srcSet":"/static/db89e30e0d954fa2824faef3dbad4c57/f836f/36f7c4f3d33d38ce942ded5b9a000053.jpg 200w,\n/static/db89e30e0d954fa2824faef3dbad4c57/2244e/36f7c4f3d33d38ce942ded5b9a000053.jpg 400w,\n/static/db89e30e0d954fa2824faef3dbad4c57/14b42/36f7c4f3d33d38ce942ded5b9a000053.jpg 800w,\n/static/db89e30e0d954fa2824faef3dbad4c57/47498/36f7c4f3d33d38ce942ded5b9a000053.jpg 1200w,\n/static/db89e30e0d954fa2824faef3dbad4c57/0e329/36f7c4f3d33d38ce942ded5b9a000053.jpg 1600w,\n/static/db89e30e0d954fa2824faef3dbad4c57/1e345/36f7c4f3d33d38ce942ded5b9a000053.jpg 2550w","srcWebp":"/static/db89e30e0d954fa2824faef3dbad4c57/58556/36f7c4f3d33d38ce942ded5b9a000053.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/db89e30e0d954fa2824faef3dbad4c57/61e93/36f7c4f3d33d38ce942ded5b9a000053.webp 200w,\n/static/db89e30e0d954fa2824faef3dbad4c57/1f5c5/36f7c4f3d33d38ce942ded5b9a000053.webp 400w,\n/static/db89e30e0d954fa2824faef3dbad4c57/58556/36f7c4f3d33d38ce942ded5b9a000053.webp 800w,\n/static/db89e30e0d954fa2824faef3dbad4c57/99238/36f7c4f3d33d38ce942ded5b9a000053.webp 1200w,\n/static/db89e30e0d954fa2824faef3dbad4c57/7c22d/36f7c4f3d33d38ce942ded5b9a000053.webp 1600w,\n/static/db89e30e0d954fa2824faef3dbad4c57/76969/36f7c4f3d33d38ce942ded5b9a000053.webp 2550w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}}]}},"pageContext":{"limit":12,"skip":0,"numPages":25,"currentPage":1,"id":5834,"name":"Thc","slug":"thc","country":"US"}},"staticQueryHashes":["3949754563","4179947113","4202924991"]}
