We each started with five drops a day as recommended by the helpful MD we talked to on this website. I’m taking 5 drops in the morning and my husband is taking it at night because that’s when our pain is worse. I’m noticing a slight bit of pain relief but what I’m really noticing more is my sleep cycle has become slightly longer. Not a problem.  My husband has noticed no change in his sleep and no pain relief. He is worried about addiction, since it seems to be changing my sleep cycle. Is addiction a concern if I stopped taking the tincture?  I am trying to ease up on Celebrex. I haven’t smoked pot in many years. Any feedback appreciated. \"\n_____________________\nAny substance that alters your experience can be habit-forming, but CBD on its own is not considered addictive. In fact, one of the least understood benefits of CBD oil is its possible effectiveness in treating symptoms associated with alcohol and drug addiction.\n\nIt is common, over time, to require more CBD to achieve the desired effect as your body develops a tolerance to the cannabinoid. This is particularly true for new consumers.\n\nKevin P.\n_____________________\nHi there!\nThere is absolutely no potential of developing  an addiction to cannabis when using such a low  THC-concentration-containing product, such as the 20:1 tincture you and  your husband have been using. CBD has no addictive potential; heavy and  frequent use of THC may cause a psychological dependence, but not  physical dependence, as alcohol,  benzodiazepines and opiates can cause. You and your husband are not even on the map of those engaged in heavy THC use. \n\nAlso,  five drops of that tincture likely has between 0.1mg and 0.3mg of THC,  which would be imperceptible for most likely everyone. Many don't even  notice 3mg.  Also, you can/should be taking the oil on an as needed  basis. Taking the oil once per day would not provide relief for more  than 6 hours at the most. I usually recommend taking the oil at least  twice per day. Also, most should at least 10 drops of a 20:1  tincture/dose, as 5 drops likely contains less than 3mg of CBD, and  functionally, zero THC. \n\nSince it seems your husband has difficulty sleeping due to more  noticeable pain in the evening, an oil with a higher THC concentration  would likely be more beneficial. In general, after learning more about  the patient's situation, I would recommend a 1:1 or 2:1 oil if THC is  acceptable to the patient. I recommend starting no higher than 2.5mg of  THC per dose. Also, 1:1 is, by far, the most studied ratio, including in  studies regarding pain issues. For sleep, THC is what causes sedation.\n\ndrkim\n_____________________\nSo, for example, if we wanted to keep the CBD dosage at 10mg/dose,  we would choose the ratio of the product that provides the amount of  THC that is acceptable to the patient. Many patients want no perceptible  psychoactivity during the day, while some psychoactivity during the  evening is acceptable. In this situation, many would use a\nhigher ratio during the day, such as\n10:1,  which would provide 10mg of CBD and 1mg of THC. Most patients do not  perceive psychoactivity when taking 1mg, or less of THC \n\nThen as a  sleep aid, a more balanced ratio, such as 1:1, which would provide 10mg  of CBD, and 10mg of THC. 10mg is considered a \"standard dose.\" Most new  patients report 10mg of THC to be moderately to extremely psychoactive.  So, when starting, it's always a good idea to start low, and go slow.   In general, 2.5mgs of THC would be a good \"test dose.\" 2:1 is also a  popular evening ratio (10mg CBD, 5mg THC). \n\nRatios of between  10:1 and 30:1 are rarely psychoactive, so this ratio-range would be a  good choice for most when psychoactivity is to be avoided, such as  during the daytime, or if the patient prefers to avoid any  psychoactivity. \n\nRatios of between 4:1 and 8:1 are considered mid-range ratios.  In general, products in this range would cause mild psychoactivity,  noticeable anxiety relief and a boosted mood, without feeling \"high\". \n\n\ndrkim\n_____________________\n2:1 and 1:1 are more balanced ratios. In general, this range  provides the most pain relief and is the better choice for sleep issues.  \n\nOils:\n1. Place the oil under your tongue.\n2. Use your tongue to gently “paint” the tincture around your inner cheeks\n3. Wait 60 to 90 seconds before swallowing.\nEffects should peak in about 15 minutes, and should last between 2 to 4 hours \n\nEDIBLES:\nWait  at least 1 hour to gauge efficacy. When you are on an empty stomach,  peak effect is reached in about one hour. However, if you have had a  large meal, especially a fatty meal, it can take up to two hours to  reach peak effect. Effects should last between 4 to 10 hours. \n\nWhen  choosing products, make sure that the product label specifies the  amount of CBD and/or THC per drop or dropper-full. Many products simply  state the total amount of CBD and/or THC, which leads to unnecessary  confusion. \n\nI hope this helps!\n\n\ndrkim","image":null}},{"node":{"id":"Question_12342-markdown","title":"New to MJ; looking 4 correct strain, I think it is :","slug":"new-to-mj-looking-4-correct-strain-i-think-it-is","content":"\"Indica - high CBD-low/moderate THC in tincture/capsule 4 SEVERE anxiety (rage) 1 yr. into withdrawal from 20 yrs. of SSRI‘s 4 SEVERE OCD w/depression & anxiety. Tried looking up doctors in our area who would treat addiction with CBD but was unsuccessful.  \"\n_____________________\nHello,\nI'm glad to hear of your willingness to take steps  towards sobriety. However, overcoming a heroin addiction is a complex  and arduous task. We can help with ameliorating some  of the unpleasant symptoms of opiate withdrawal. However, it would be  medical malpractice to work as the primary physician, for what should be  a multi-modal treatment strategy led by a physician with specialized  training in addiction medicine. \n\nSymptoms of opiate withdrawal may include: muscle aches,  restlessness,  anxiety, runny nose, sweating, insomnia, abdominal  cramping, diarrhea,  nausea and vomiting. Cannabis should help alleviate  pain, anxiety,  insomnia, restlessness and nausea; these issues are best treated with a  decent amount of THC. Accordingly, I would likely discourage, unless   the patient were averse to THC, using a Very high CBD vs low THC  product, nor would I recommend Very high CBD strains in this situation.   \n\ndrkim\n_____________________\nHere are products and strains for you to consider:\n1. https://www.cbd.org/products/chocolates/1-1-chocolate - a \"whole plant\" 2:1 edible\n2. http://dosist.com/pen-relief/ - a 1:2 vaporizer pen\n3. http://kivaconfections.com/products/bars/ginger - a 1:1 \"whole plant\" edible\n\nSome CBD strains to consider: \nSweet and Sour Widow - a 1:1 indica strain \nPennywise - a 1:1 indica strain \nCannatonic - a 3:1 hybrid strain\n\nSome \"standard\" strains to consider (indica or indica dominant hybrids):\nGrand Daddy Purp\nNorthern Lights\nGod's Gift\nChocolate Chunk\n\nI hope this helps some, and best of luck!\n\n\ndrkim\n_____________________\nI'd like to second Dr. Kim's point about the complexity of managing opioid withdrawal, not to discourage it but to be realistic about what is involved.  Of course, the severity and duration of the symptoms will depend on the level of addiction, which we do not know.  While cannabis can be helpful, I'm fairly sure that CBD alone, or even with generous amounts of THC, will not be sufficient to ameliorate significant withdrawal symptoms.  A variety of non-opioid prescription medications such as clonidine can be extremely helpful in this situation, so I strongly encourage you to keep searching for a medical situation for managing the acute withdrawal phase. \n\ndrelkind","image":null}},{"node":{"id":"Question_8961-markdown","title":"can CBD oil help with valium withdrawal or would in worsen or prolong the symptoms. A microdose of THC (for instance, a 2-5MG edible product) can help take the edge off of the anxiety/fidgety symptoms of withdrawals. With micro-dosing, ideally you want to find that middle place where you are getting relief from the withdrawal, without over-impairing your core functions. It is recommended to taper off the medication as opposed to abruptly stopping it. Either way, I would advise that it is safe to consume CBD but stay away from THC as it can induce anxiety during withdrawal. The CBD may help you feel calmer and ease depressive symptoms. I would recommend to start with a very low dosage of CBD (2.5mg - 5mg) and taper up depending on how you feel. SSRI's like Cymbalta and Viibryd have been associated with some reports of suicidal ideation, so please please talk to your mental health support team if you feel like your safety is ever at risk.  Benzodiazepine (Klonopin) withdrawal can be serious as well, depending on how much you take and for how long, and can even be associated with seizures, so again it's really important to work with your care team to make the tapering as safe for you as possible.  It's good to hear that the CBD in your products is helping, which makes sense since CBD can calm anxiety and other withdrawal symptoms.  20 mg/day isn't a very high dose, so you could start by increasing your CBD dose.  Have you considered incorporating some THC into your cannabis regimen?  It could likely help with insomnia as well as nausea.\n\ndrbultman","image":null}},{"node":{"id":"Question_6987-markdown","title":"Help with heroin addiction","slug":"help-with-heroin-addiction","content":"\"I am looking for a product to help in recovery from heroin addiction. Thank you \"\n_____________________\nWith all respect to Dr. Olson,  I've seen this following syndrome in my practice called Antidepressant Discontinuation Syndrome.  Here is a helpful article you can look at and also bring to your own MD.  The authors of this very well made article suggest against abrupt discontinuation of SSRI, SNRI's and other anti-depressants.  I want to stress that this has just been in my practice and Dr.Olson also probably has just as much if not more experience than I in this matter.  I offer this article humbly:\nhttp://www.aafp.org/afp/2006/0801/p449.html\n\ndrpark\n_____________________\nYou might be having SSRI (Celexa) withdraw symptoms. I could happen if you were on a high dose or even a mild dose. If a mild dose you might want to try waiting it out a day or two more and see how you do. If you were on a higher does or can not tolerate the withdraw symptoms, you might want to restart your Celexa. Restart at half the dose you were on. After a few days, or when you feel better, you might want to try again to taper off the Celexa. this time try cutting back on the dose by 50% each week (4-6 days). If you continue to feel ok, keep cutting back on the dose until you are off. If the withdrawal symptoms develop again, go back up on the dose you were on that didn't give you withdrawal symptoms and try again this time tapering the dose ever 2 weeks. The same issue can happen with the Klonopin. If so, try the same slow taper as mentioned above.\n\ndrpinto\n_____________________\nI have successfully removed many patients from SSRIs but the benzodiazepines are a whole other story. I usually encourage patients to be on high-dose CBD (~28:1) twice a day (10-15 drops twice daily) for one month before you start to withdraw from your either medications. SSRIs you can typically abruptly discontinue but save all your leftover pills because in about 4 to 5 days your body will want more SSRI medication, so give it a pill, if you need another pill the next day you can do that also but then try to stay off the medication for approximately a week, your body will scream for more and that's when you give it one or two pills but you will notice this is a sub therapeutic dose so your body will be tapering off at this point and it typically only takes a few weeks for you to be off the SSRI completely.\nBenzodiazepines should never abruptly be discontinued because they cause horrendous side effects.\nBenzodiazepine should be reduced by one dose per month. Please don't try to discontinue the benzodiazepines any quicker than that or you could cause more depression. You will eventually be off the benzodiazepines. You must be very careful with your THC intake because if you go high on THC you will increase your anxiety. Until you are well stabilized off the benzodiazepines you must concentrate mostly on high CBD Cannabis to keep your body calm but you don't get the full effect of CBD cannabis for approximately 3 to 4 weeks. Since you are prone to anxiety and depression, You legally can carry a high CBD/ low THC spray with you but when you are driving you must carry it in the back of the car like an open container of alcohol. If you feel anxious, one spray of the high CBD cannabis (8:1 to 18:1) should have a nice calming effect.\nMost people are vitamin D deficient and many doctors only measure the inactive form, 25-OHD, but they should also measure the active form that is excreted from the kidneys, 1,25-dihydroxy Vitamin D, since the inactive form maybe low but the active form maybe high and you don't want to overstress your kidneys. \nVitamin D is necessary for the human body to function normally because in the human body it is a hormone not a vitamin and hormones are necessary to create new healthy cells.\nIf the vitamin D blood level is low in your body, it negatively affects many systems, such as your muscles and blood pressure. With low levels of Vitamin D you may experience thyroid disease, chronic pain with muscle & joint aching, kidney stones & even calcified heart valves, high blood pressure, depression, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, an increased risk of migraine headaches and even a significantly increased risk of breast cancer with a greater risk for metastatic disease and death. \nThe laboratory ‘normal’ for Vitamin D3 is 30-100 (30ng/mL is rickets level) but for optimum health the blood level must be 55-100. Do you want to be just ‘normal’ or would you like to go for optimum?\nThe kidney clearance function for Vitamin D must be monitored so the larger amounts of Vitamin D are not overwhelming the ability to clear any excess Vitamin D from the system and this is the level of the active form of Vitamin D. \nFor a healthy patient with normal kidney function and vitamin D deficiency, I recommend a large dose (called a bolus) of vitamin D3, approximately 40,000 international units to be given with food one time per week  plus 5000 International units of vitamin D3 per day, repeating the sequence for up to four weeks and then do a repeat blood level. For accuracy do not take your vitamin D right before the blood test and do not do the bolus the day before or the day of the blood test. You should notice a significant sense of well-being once your blood level of vitamin D3 is above 55 ng/mL but there is no benefit in going above 100 ng/mL.\nIn order to sleep as you're going off your other medications, please be aware that you may need to keep your CBD: THC ratio in a 2:1 balance in order to sleep without anxiety, so if you have had more THC in the evening you may need to take a higher dose of CBD to balance the ratio of CBD to THC.\nI know this all sounds technical and it sort of is but you can do this because I've had great success with other patients and if you still have questions you can always send your questions and we will give you an answer.\nIf you do have further questions, please don't send those questions as a response to this posting since the posting will only allow us to answer one time, then you must submit a new question.\nGood luck, this may go a little slow but it is well worth the journey to get you away from dangerous, addictive Western pharmaceutical drugs.\n\ndrolson","image":null}}]}},"pageContext":{"limit":12,"skip":0,"numPages":2,"currentPage":1,"id":5936,"name":"Withdrawal","slug":"withdrawal","country":"US"}},"staticQueryHashes":["3949754563","4179947113","4202924991"]}
