Other research, however, has also shown that\nthe cannabinoids in marijuana [provide some\nprotection](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1277837/)\nagainst damage from these chemicals - cannabis seems to boost the immune\nresponse and block enzyme action needed for carcinogenesis - and has\nfailed to find a link between [marijuana and lung\ncancer](http://cebp.aacrjournals.org/content/15/10/1829.short) or\nlong-term negative effects on [lung\ncapacity](http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=1104848).\n\nSmoking cannabis has, however, been linked to respiratory problems\nincluding increased [coughing, wheezing, sputum\nproduction](http://www.ukcia.org/research/RespiratoryEffectsOfCannabisDependence.pdf),\nand airway inflammation. Thus, patients may be reluctant to use this\nmethod despite evidence showing it is faster than ingestion for\ncannabinoid delivery.\n\nAnother cannabis delivery option is\n[vaporization](http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1300/J175v04n01_02#.Ve3cPxFVikp).\nIn this method, the cannabis is heated to a temperature lower than what\noccurs with combustion (combustion occurs at about 230°C). The lower\ntemperature (185°C) releases the cannabinoids, and not the toxins, into\na mist or vapor that is inhaled. The amount of cannabinoid delivered is\nsimilar to that of smoking, but has [fewer respiratory symptoms and\nproblems](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1853086/).\n\nSafer than Smoking\n------------------\n\nTetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is one of the most abundant cannabinoids in\ncannabis and is associated with the marijuana high. THC can help treat\npain, nausea, vomiting, and appetite loss. In a\n[study](http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1300/J175v04n01_02#.Ve3cPxFVikp)\nthat compared vaporization and smoking, researchers found that THC\nlevels were between 36 percent and 61 percent for vaporization, which is\nsimilar to the levels found with smoking cannabis. Furthermore,\nexamination of the vapor found only trace amounts of the toxic chemicals\nfound in smoke.\n\nEach cannabinoid has a different [evaporation\ntemperature](http://www.zamnesia.com/content/284-vaporizer-temperatures-for-cannabis).\nTHC evaporates at about 157°C, whereas cannabidiol (CBD) evaporates at\ntemperatures between 160 and 180°C.\n[CBD](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3579248/) has been\nfound effective in treating pain, nausea, vomiting, anxiety, and\ndepression, as well as in reducing cancerous tumors. The trick with\nvaporization is to keep the temperature high enough to release the\ncannabinoids, but low enough to prevent combustion.\n\nConduction vs. Convection\n-------------------------\n\nCurrent vaporizers work either through conduction or convection. In\nconduction, the cannabis is placed directly on a heating element,\nsometimes referred to as a nail, that has been heated with a flame. With\nconvection, heat is indirect and is transferred through a gas or liquid\nto the cannabis. Both methods have some positives and negatives.\n\nConduction vaporization:\n\n-   Heats quickly\n-   Requires a less expensive device\n-   Has a higher risk of combustion as there is no temperature control\n    for a direct flame\n-   Requires shaking or stirring of the cannabis between draws\n\nConvection vaporization:\n\n-   Takes longer to heat\n-   Requires a more expensive device\n-   Provides for more accurate temperature control and thus more even\n    heating\n-   Has less chance of combustion\n\nFlower vs. Concentrate\n----------------------\n\nVaporizers\ntake either herb (leaves and flowers) or concentrate. Vapor from herbs\ncontains between 5 percent and 20 percent THC and from concentrate about\n60 percent. To create concentrate, cannabis is filtered through a\nsolvent, ice water, or carbon dioxide to separate the THC from the plant\nmatter. This concentrate is then placed in the vaporizer for use.\n\nPatients should talk with their medical marijuana professional to see\nwhat types of vaporizers and what form of cannabis would be best for\ntheir needs. Each form a vaporization has benefits for patients\ndepending on the type of condition they wish to alleviate.\n\n[Photo Credit.](https://www.flickr.com/photos/127457165@N03/16546091210)","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.36986301369863,"src":"/static/9c66b84c4df13f6bad2dff216d3e88f9/14b42/0fccc95b98456c6004ce0e8baeb362e4.jpg","srcSet":"/static/9c66b84c4df13f6bad2dff216d3e88f9/f836f/0fccc95b98456c6004ce0e8baeb362e4.jpg 200w,\n/static/9c66b84c4df13f6bad2dff216d3e88f9/2244e/0fccc95b98456c6004ce0e8baeb362e4.jpg 400w,\n/static/9c66b84c4df13f6bad2dff216d3e88f9/14b42/0fccc95b98456c6004ce0e8baeb362e4.jpg 800w,\n/static/9c66b84c4df13f6bad2dff216d3e88f9/47498/0fccc95b98456c6004ce0e8baeb362e4.jpg 1200w,\n/static/9c66b84c4df13f6bad2dff216d3e88f9/57cfc/0fccc95b98456c6004ce0e8baeb362e4.jpg 1402w","srcWebp":"/static/9c66b84c4df13f6bad2dff216d3e88f9/58556/0fccc95b98456c6004ce0e8baeb362e4.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/9c66b84c4df13f6bad2dff216d3e88f9/61e93/0fccc95b98456c6004ce0e8baeb362e4.webp 200w,\n/static/9c66b84c4df13f6bad2dff216d3e88f9/1f5c5/0fccc95b98456c6004ce0e8baeb362e4.webp 400w,\n/static/9c66b84c4df13f6bad2dff216d3e88f9/58556/0fccc95b98456c6004ce0e8baeb362e4.webp 800w,\n/static/9c66b84c4df13f6bad2dff216d3e88f9/99238/0fccc95b98456c6004ce0e8baeb362e4.webp 1200w,\n/static/9c66b84c4df13f6bad2dff216d3e88f9/c569c/0fccc95b98456c6004ce0e8baeb362e4.webp 1402w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_1937-markdown","title":"The Differences Between Edibles and Flowers","slug":"the-differences-between-edibles-and-flowers","content":"A medical marijuana patient has more options now than ever before.\r\nEdible products are coming increasingly more popular as the medical\r\nmarijuana industry is growing. Edibles offer a great-tasting way to get\r\nthe benefit of medical-grade cannabis without smoking. For some, edibles\r\nare be a more efficient way to introduce cannabinoids, specifically THC,\r\ninto their system. Below are [five\r\nways](https://www.leafly.com/news/cannabis-101/ingest-or-inhale-5-differences-between-marijuana-edibles-and-flow)\r\nedible products differ from traditional flowers.\r\n\r\nDifferent Delivery Methods\r\n--------------------------\r\n\r\nIngesting marijuana-infused edibles requires the body to metabolize THC\r\nthrough the liver. The liver converts the THC to 11-hydroxy-THC, which\r\nis a practical delivery system. The converted THC is better able to\r\ncross the blood-brain barrier, creating a more intense effect. Inhaled\r\ncannabis, whether smoked or vaporized, travels from the lungs directly\r\nto the brain. The effect of the drug is faster, but lasts for a shorter\r\nduration.\r\n\r\nSlower Processing\r\n-----------------\r\n\r\nThe different delivery and absorption methods mean that edibles take\r\nlonger to metabolize. A person who smokes or vaporizes cannabis will\r\nfeel the effect quickly. In an edible form, it may take up to 2 hours to\r\nget the benefit, but it will be longer lasting.\r\n\r\nWhile edibles may feel stronger, they actually deliver a smaller\r\nconcentration of cannabinoids. An edible product may offer only 10 to 20\r\npercent of THC, while smoked cannabis has closer to 50 to 60 percent.\r\nThe smoked product will peak in the first 10 minutes and likely\r\ndisappear in less than an hour, whereas the effects from edibles can\r\nlast several hours.\r\n\r\nDosing Challenges\r\n-----------------\r\n\r\nCalculating the THC content of edibles, either homemade or manufactured,\r\nis a challenge. With inhaled cannabis, the patient knows right away if\r\nthey are close to the right dose and can adjust as needed. Edibles,\r\nhowever, must be ingested and metabolized before the patient feels the\r\neffect, making it hard to gauge the proper dose.\r\n\r\nPotency Levels\r\n--------------\r\n\r\nSince dosing is difficult with edibles, it becomes tough to measure the\r\npotency of products from batch to batch. The first time a patient tries\r\na form of marijuana-infused candy, for example, it may produce a mild\r\neffect. The next time, he or she may take more to get a stronger dose\r\nand find this batch is twice as potent. Steps are being taken to\r\nregulate the testing of manufactured edible cannabis products and\r\ncontrol its THC content, but it may take time. Those who live in a state\r\nthat does not yet require testing should use edibles cautiously to\r\nensure they get the proper effect.\r\n\r\nHealth Concerns of Smoking\r\n--------------------------\r\n\r\nSmoking cannabis can have long-term health effects, which is why many\r\nturn to edibles or vaporization. Others may worry about the sugar\r\ncontent of edible products, but now days, not all edibles are brownies\r\nor sweet treats. Today, there are edible recipes for hummus, vegetable\r\nmedleys, teas, and even bacon. Those making their own edibles should use\r\ncaution to ensure they get accurate doses.\r\n\r\nEach person must find the delivery method that works for them. For\r\npatients with chronic pain, edibles offer sustainable relief. People who\r\nwant an immediate benefit and are okay with a shorter-lasting duration\r\nwill find that smoking is an effective route. Overall, it will take some\r\nexperimentation to find the optimum delivery system for each patient.\r\n\r\n[Photo Credit.](https://www.flickr.com/photos/eggrole/4725614490/in/photolist-8cA1xU-rehJzP-7b1em2-7aZK1K-7aUPJF-7aWEBS-atJFX4-9o6CCK-9o9EZj-bjyU1L-7aZywZ-awPuQe-bwQBYj)","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,/9j/2wBDABALDA4MChAODQ4SERATGCgaGBYWGDEjJR0oOjM9PDkzODdASFxOQERXRTc4UG1RV19iZ2hnPk1xeXBkeFxlZ2P/2wBDARESEhgVGC8aGi9jQjhCY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2P/wgARCAANABQDASIAAhEBAxEB/8QAFwABAAMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIDBP/EABUBAQEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAID/9oADAMBAAIQAxAAAAGqeNUhY//EABsQAAIBBQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAECEgAQESJB/9oACAEBAAEFAkRYNA0y4PBrb//EABURAQEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEQ/9oACAEDAQE/ARJ//8QAGBEAAwEBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAERAmH/2gAIAQIBAT8BeN20XT//xAAaEAACAgMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAERASAQIh/9oACAEBAAY/ArZFrVwjkf/EABsQAAIDAAMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABETFRIWHB/9oACAEBAAE/IZF8+FORqaZIpxKwvDBekfLl2f/aAAwDAQACAAMAAAAQnA//xAAXEQEBAQEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABACER/9oACAEDAQE/EBnEl3L/xAAXEQEBAQEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABACFB/9oACAECAQE/EGIQYdX/xAAdEAEBAAIBBQAAAAAAAAAAAAABEQAhYTFBUXGB/9oACAEBAAE/EIgcTp7c4SXGdgxrNoapjuS21rTmhWm4lH44lEqavlz/2Q==","aspectRatio":1.5037593984962405,"src":"/static/28a04513ffe0a75da0f5df761d81aa06/14b42/92533e8fb014050819078d2543555a74.jpg","srcSet":"/static/28a04513ffe0a75da0f5df761d81aa06/f836f/92533e8fb014050819078d2543555a74.jpg 200w,\n/static/28a04513ffe0a75da0f5df761d81aa06/2244e/92533e8fb014050819078d2543555a74.jpg 400w,\n/static/28a04513ffe0a75da0f5df761d81aa06/14b42/92533e8fb014050819078d2543555a74.jpg 800w,\n/static/28a04513ffe0a75da0f5df761d81aa06/47498/92533e8fb014050819078d2543555a74.jpg 1200w,\n/static/28a04513ffe0a75da0f5df761d81aa06/a6974/92533e8fb014050819078d2543555a74.jpg 1536w","srcWebp":"/static/28a04513ffe0a75da0f5df761d81aa06/58556/92533e8fb014050819078d2543555a74.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/28a04513ffe0a75da0f5df761d81aa06/61e93/92533e8fb014050819078d2543555a74.webp 200w,\n/static/28a04513ffe0a75da0f5df761d81aa06/1f5c5/92533e8fb014050819078d2543555a74.webp 400w,\n/static/28a04513ffe0a75da0f5df761d81aa06/58556/92533e8fb014050819078d2543555a74.webp 800w,\n/static/28a04513ffe0a75da0f5df761d81aa06/99238/92533e8fb014050819078d2543555a74.webp 1200w,\n/static/28a04513ffe0a75da0f5df761d81aa06/d5052/92533e8fb014050819078d2543555a74.webp 1536w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_1909-markdown","title":"Hemp and Cannabis for Medicinal Purposes: Is There a Difference?","slug":"hemp-and-cannabis-for-medicinal-purposes-is-there-a-difference","content":"With [23 states and the District of\r\nColumbia](http://www.governing.com/gov-data/state-marijuana-laws-map-medical-recreational.html)\r\nhaving legalized medical marijuana to some degree, health-related\r\ncannabis products are growing. Some of these products are hemp-based and\r\nsome are marijuana-based, but what is the difference?\r\n\r\nHemp Versus Marijuana\r\n---------------------\r\n\r\nHemp and marijuana are two varieties of the same plant, cannabis sativa.\r\nHemp refers to a variety that has agricultural and manufacturing uses,\r\nwhile marijuana is the name traditionally given to plants grown for\r\ntheir psychotropic effects. Differences include:\r\n\r\n-   **How they are cultivated.** Hemp is grown outdoors whereas\r\n    marijuana is grown both outdoors and indoors.\r\n-   **Their size and structure.** Hemp grows between 10 and 16 feet in\r\n    height and looks like bamboo. Marijuana is less than 5 feet tall, is\r\n    bushy and has more flowers.\r\n-   **Their utility.** Hemp is used to make textiles, rope, paper,\r\n    plastic, food, body care products, nutritional supplements,\r\n    essential oils and medicine. Marijuana is primarily used for\r\n    recreational and medicinal purposes.\r\n-   **The cannabinoid composition.** According to the [U.S. Department\r\n    of\r\n    Agriculture](http://www.ers.usda.gov/media/328202/ages001eb_1_.pdf),\r\n    hemp contains less than 1 percent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which\r\n    is the chemical associated with marijuana's high. In contrast,\r\n    marijuana contains between 3 percent and 15 percent THC.\r\n\r\nLegal Usage\r\n-----------\r\n\r\nAnother distinction between hemp-based and marijuana-based products is\r\ntheir\r\n[legality](https://www.leafly.com/news/health/are-hemp-derived-cbd-products-a-legal-alternative-for-patients-wi).\r\nProducts derived from marijuana can only be sold in states that have\r\npassed medical marijuana legislation. Hemp-derived products, on the\r\nother hand, are legal in all 50 states.\r\n\r\nUntil recently, hemp was illegal to grow in the United States, so all\r\nhemp-based products were imported. In the past few years, some states\r\nbegan allowing for academic and agricultural hemp research, as well as\r\nexploration for potential commercial opportunities. In 2014, [federal\r\nlegislation](http://www.votehemp.com/PR/2014-02-07-vh_farm_bill_signed.html)\r\nwas signed approving hemp research in states that had previously passed\r\nhemp laws.\r\n\r\nHemp Oil\r\n--------\r\n\r\nOne medical product on the market is hemp oil. Hemp oil is made from\r\nseeds or from processed hemp stalks. While touted to be full of\r\n[CBD](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3579248/), which is\r\nused to treat nausea, vomiting, seizures, inflammation, mood disorders\r\nand pain, hemp oil is not regulated. Thus, the amount of CBD may not be\r\noptimal for medical purposes.\r\n\r\nIn addition, hemp oil is high in polyunsaturated fats. Making the right choice.","slug":"indica-or-sativa-making-the-right-choice","content":"New patients considering the benefits of medical marijuana may be\r\nsurprised to find out there is more than one species of cannabis\r\navailable. The genus cannabis consists of a number of subspecies, but\r\nonly a few are used for medical treatment. Two of the most common are\r\n*Cannabis sativa*and *Cannabis indica.* Understanding the difference is\r\nkey to making an informed choice about your medication.\r\n\r\nCannabis Sativa\r\n---------------\r\n\r\nLike most types of marijuana, the main constituent of cannabis sativa is\r\ntetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, although it includes a number of other\r\ncompounds such as cannabidiol, or CBD, which is known to help reduce\r\nanxiety. One\r\n[study](http://archpsyc.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=482939)\r\nindicates that the combination of THC and CBD found in the sativa\r\nsubspecies of cannabis can have an effect on the neural and symptomatic\r\nresponse to fear.\r\n\r\nThe effect of cannabis sativa is more cerebral. The user feels energetic\r\nwith enhanced senses. It improves socialization skills and triggers\r\ncuriosity. The flavor varies from fruity to an earthy taste, depending\r\non the strain of the plant.\r\n\r\nCannabis Indica\r\n---------------\r\n\r\nCannabis indica is a broad-leaf plant that offers a higher level of THC and less CBD than its\r\ncounterpart sativa. This can make it a good choice for pain relief.\r\nIndica plants tend to be shorter and bushier, and the flowers wider and\r\nmore dense.\r\n\r\nIndicia offers a broader body experience and less cerebral stimulation.\r\nThe user feels relaxed and laid back, especially if taken for chronic\r\npain. It counteracts the stress that comes with pain, producing\r\nrelaxation and calmness. In some cases, this herb promotes sleep. People\r\nwho use cannabis indicia are prone to deep intellectual thoughts.\r\n\r\nThe tastes ranges from pungent to sweet and fruity.\r\n\r\nWhat are the Main Differences?\r\n------------------------------\r\n\r\nThe crucial difference between these two varieties of medical marijuana\r\nis the ratio of THC to CBD. Cannabis indica is known for its [higher\r\nratio](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21653452) of the two\r\ncomponents. This gives indica strains a more calming effect than\r\nvarieties that have a low THC to CBD ratio.\r\n\r\nSativa, with its lower ratio of THC to CBD, produces a more vivid effect\r\nthat results in an increased energy level for the user. Indica, on the\r\nother hand, is more sedative and soothing.\r\n\r\nIn general, the differences can be broken down thus:\r\n\r\n-   Sativa produces a more energetic effect, while indica is more\r\n    sedative.\r\n-   Sativa offers a mental boost, so it is a good choice for disorders\r\n    such as depression and PTSD.\r\n-   Indica is calming, so it can help manage pain, relieve nausea and\r\n    trigger sleepiness.\r\n\r\nDifferent Strains and Hybrids\r\n-----------------------------\r\n\r\nWithin each subspecies, different strains exist as well. There are also\r\nhybrid strains that contain a percentage of both indica and sativa buds.\r\nEach strain offers a unique taste and effect, and new strains are\r\nregularly being developed for specific medical uses. Here is a sampling\r\nof just a few:\r\n\r\n-   AK47 is a sativa dominant strain, but marketed as a hybrid. The\r\n    exact ratio is generally 65 percent sativa and 35 percent indica. It\r\n    produces a pungent skunky odor with just a hint of woodsy and spicy\r\n    smell. The user feels a strong cerebral reaction that starts\r\n    gradually and builds. The THC/CBD ratio is 21: .22.\r\n\r\n-   Blueberry: A hybrid strain. The mix will vary, but it is usually 80\r\n    percent indica and 20 percent sativa. It gets its name from the\r\n    fruity aroma and slight blueberry taste. This is a potent form that\r\n    can help manage depression and stress.\r\n-   Afghani: Grown both as pure indica and as a hybrid strain, Afghani\r\n    has a deep purple blush and a sweet flavor. Its calming effect makes\r\n    it a suitable choice for chronic pain sufferers.\r\n-   Northern Lights is a grade A hydro product that is sometimes called\r\n    Aurora B. This strain has deep green colas and with thick, generous\r\n    trichrome formations. The balance of saliva and indica subspecies\r\n    produces a cerebral and body effect. The smell is spicy and earthy.\r\n    The user will feel relaxed but without lazy or sleepy side effects.\r\n    Northern Lights is a good choice for stress relief, especially when\r\n    you want to stay active.\r\n\r\n-   The Girl Scout Cookies strain of medical marijuana is a sativa\r\n    dominant hybrid that is dark green with orange hairs and a little\r\n    sparkle. Despite the name, it does not smell like cookies. The odor\r\n    is somewhat minty, hence the name, with a touch of lemongrass. It\r\n    can be slightly skunky, as well. Girl Scout Cookies produces a range\r\n    of taste sensations. Users report experiencing cherry, chocolate,\r\n    lemongrass and mint. The heavy sativa blend produces a energetic\r\n    feel, making it a good choice to relieve depressant and other mood\r\n    disorders.\r\n\r\nThere are hundreds of strains available, each defined by the effect,\r\nsmell and taste of the plant. The availability varies by location and\r\nprovider. Picking the right one depends greatly on the desired effect,\r\nas well as on personal taste and budget. The doctor may suggest a\r\nparticular strain based on your medical problem and overall health, but\r\npatients can also find strains which they enjoy the effects of the most\r\nwith a similar ratio and hybridization.\r\n\r\n[Photo Credit.](https://www.flickr.com/photos/54591706@N02/5613410129)","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.1764705882352942,"src":"/static/dd36f0eb427dcf17486b7fa5feccf2c3/f422e/bb58b5c0cd9fd2ddff3efbe28fe1e290.jpg","srcSet":"/static/dd36f0eb427dcf17486b7fa5feccf2c3/f836f/bb58b5c0cd9fd2ddff3efbe28fe1e290.jpg 200w,\n/static/dd36f0eb427dcf17486b7fa5feccf2c3/2244e/bb58b5c0cd9fd2ddff3efbe28fe1e290.jpg 400w,\n/static/dd36f0eb427dcf17486b7fa5feccf2c3/f422e/bb58b5c0cd9fd2ddff3efbe28fe1e290.jpg 640w","srcWebp":"/static/dd36f0eb427dcf17486b7fa5feccf2c3/991d2/bb58b5c0cd9fd2ddff3efbe28fe1e290.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/dd36f0eb427dcf17486b7fa5feccf2c3/61e93/bb58b5c0cd9fd2ddff3efbe28fe1e290.webp 200w,\n/static/dd36f0eb427dcf17486b7fa5feccf2c3/1f5c5/bb58b5c0cd9fd2ddff3efbe28fe1e290.webp 400w,\n/static/dd36f0eb427dcf17486b7fa5feccf2c3/991d2/bb58b5c0cd9fd2ddff3efbe28fe1e290.webp 640w","sizes":"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_1914-markdown","title":"Cannabis May be Safer than Opioids for Managing Pain","slug":"cannabis-may-be-safer-than-opioids-for-managing-pain","content":"For centuries, opium was used recreationally and to relieve pain. This makes it difficult for people to quit using opioids once they start. \r\n\r\n### Opioid Prescriptions & Abuse Skyrocket\r\n\r\nIn the late 1990s, the federal government removed some of the restrictions on opioid use in treating chronic pain. [Between 1999 and 2014, the sale of prescription opioids almost quadrupled](https://www.cdc.gov/drugoverdose/data/prescribing.html). Today, [the most prescribed medicine in the United States is an opioid— hydrocodone](https://drugabuse.com/library/hydrocodone-history-and-statistics/).\r\nAbuse of opioids is also on the rise. In 2008, 6.2 million Americans (12 and older) used prescription drugs for recreational purposes, and the rate of non-medical use of prescription pain relievers was 4.6% among young adults. [Hospitalizations for opioid use rose more than 150% from 19932012](https://www.hcup-us.ahrq.gov/reports/statbriefs/sb177-Hospitalizations-for-Opioid-Overuse.jsp). And in 2007, [around 27,000 people died from accidental drug overdoses](https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm6101a3.htm). And since 2003, more overdose deaths are a result of opioid use than from heroin and cocaine combined. The statistics paint a grim picture. But that’s where medicinal cannabis comes in.  \r\n\r\n### Cannabis Is Safer Than Opioids\r\n\r\nAbout the same time that opioid restrictions were eased, some states began legalizing medical marijuana for treating pain. A 2014 study found that [states with medical marijuana laws had a 24.8% lower rate of opioid deaths than states without legal medical marijuana](http://archinte.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=18988780). The study also found that opioid deaths decreased each year following medical cannabis legalization.\r\n\r\nRELATED: [NEW RESEARCH PROVES MARIJUANA EFFECTIVELY CONTROLS CHRONIC PAIN](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/new-research-proves-marijuana-effectively-controls-chronic-pain)\r\n\r\n[Cannabis](http://www.health.harvard.edu/mind-and-mood/medical-marijuana-and-the-mind) does have side effects, but most are mild. Its use has been associated with:\r\n\r\n* mood changes\r\n* memory loss\r\n* anxiety\r\n* vomiting\r\n* diarrhea\r\n\r\nHowever, [addiction is uncommon, and deaths are rare with marijuana use](http://medicalmarijuana.procon.org/view.resource.php?resourceID=000145).\r\n\r\nFurther studies are needed to explore the relationship between opioids and medical marijuana, but early findings show that cannabis may do more than reduce pain. It may save lives.\r\n\r\n[Photo Credit](https://www.flickr.com/photos/healthgauge/10135903905/in/photolist-grFa6T-diDABj-ikfB8d-86nRNR-4JXmz6-6NLiZ5-dSiRbN-8pJqZ-86nS3a-t3fKr-8TMqYK-buQdGu-7wNLa8-hNn9e-76g3EG-JLLyg-4WL7tL-ddfGWj-AUGXH-c9q5eu-7MhkvW-8dZbzR-4DyRuj-8cPJQm-8FBhwK-oRqU-ev2AR5-qLDfq2-86nRVe-8dZbUz-eYbToQ-f1uFuv-7nvGob-c9qGoy-6yLQYR-8oXFQY-4UiRny-4nMTwY-bHJZy6-5dkiMu-a34Eto-bdTMdX-cHikXu-kuygSv-4e1gT8-9uLbiZ-N65ak-6yQVtf-buQdTs-c9q8aU)\r\n\r\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Each administration method can be used for different condition or desired effect. \r\n\r\nSmoking\r\n-------------\r\nSmoking is the traditional method of marijuana administration.  Different strains can be chosen based on the desired outcome, but all products, when smoked, provide an almost immediate effect.  Due to the quick onset, it is easy to control the dosing when marijuana is smoked because the patients are able to feel the effect quickly and adjust dosing accordingly.  There are some concerns that have been sparked about smoking, due to the potential negative effects on the respiratory system when any product is smoked.  This concern can be decreased when patients use high potency products so less smoking is necessary to get the desired benefits of the medication. \r\n\r\nVaporization\r\n-----------------\r\nVaporization has quickly gained traction as a healthy alternative to smoking marijuana.  Vaporizing is less harmful than smoking because there are less byproducts due to the lower temperature used in the vaporizer. Vaporization provides the same quick relief as smoking because the product can enter the blood stream quickly. Vaporization is similar to the administration of an inhaler.  Both smoking and vaporization are good options for patients who need instant relief from issues such as pain from PMS, chronic pain, Fibromyalgia, and many other conditions.\r\n\r\nCannabis Oil/Tinctures\r\n------------------------------\r\nCannabis oils and tinctures are concentrates of marijuana that can either be added to products, such as food or drink, or be consumed on their own. Some oils are added to pill capsules and are swallowed like traditional medication.  Quality is very important in concentrates, particularly in oils. Until recently, methods for oil extraction often contaminated the oils with harmful products.  Now the cleanest method of oil extraction uses CO2, which results in a pure cannabis oil product.  Oils tend to be the method used to give high CBD medications to people with conditions like epilepsy because they can be very accurately dosed if they are properly made.  Tinctures, a concentration made with an alcohol base, tends to be slightly less potent than oils.  Tinctures and oils can be helpful for quick relief, accurate dosing, and to get the medication more directly to the gastrointestinal tract without consuming an edible. \r\n\r\nEdibles \r\n--------------------\r\nEdibles can be a tricky method of administration for medical cannabis.  It can be as long as one to two hours after consumption for the effects of a edible to be felt. Due to the slow onset time, and inaccurate labeling of products, edibles can be very hard to dose.  Most edibles do not contain the percentage of THC/CDB that is listed on the package, so edibles should be dosed in small amounts and patients should be cautious about consuming more of the edible if they do not feel effects as rapidly as they expect. Edibles, however, do tend to have longer lasting effects than other administration methods.  Edibles are often used for people with loss of appetite in Cancer, Anorexia, or AIDS to promote appetite. \r\n\r\nTopical\r\n-------------------\r\nTopicals are one of the lesser known forms of medical marijuana on the market, but they are very helpful for people with inflammation and pain.  Topicals are absolutely free from any physco-active properties, making them a great choice for first time users.  Topical products allow people to experience the pain relief from cannabis without the potential side effects of ingesting too much of a cannabis product. Topicals are particular helpful for people who have Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, or similar pain issues.  \r\n\r\n[Photo Credit.](https://www.flickr.com/photos/46434953@N07/8617919882/in/photolist-e8x6ky-4fQ6Jq-92P4iu-948wrL-tCmafT-aYS9JR-9cWQdE-fs5xq-7ZrYJi-5qyoom-pXUKSd-jSDaqu-5QVWPQ-fsA5BG-nXTjv9-hiiggS-p5Su1e-9jjEYG-b6C4ZR-4ntqiQ-gVfpJw-fQwnYj-mckKnT-dNgyA5-oaQebG-9Bcfce-6ysF1-nQMNQC-7LFiK8-t1QbRT-sG4B-67Jrva-agXYLE-aRuzG-8WGDYA-4AZ1nY-auuTZD-agXYPL-baSgkD-4HbUS-8t8jA4-qEW2J7-ox93kw-iYrqbE-6kTS1G-cs8HdL-sVb1u-4dzSTz-mtVXTR-b1DMqP)","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.5037593984962405,"src":"/static/04fe4f63053246345a2c57e2f06b0ccb/14b42/f0e7ff81ac2c98bc31814c39127602d9.jpg","srcSet":"/static/04fe4f63053246345a2c57e2f06b0ccb/f836f/f0e7ff81ac2c98bc31814c39127602d9.jpg 200w,\n/static/04fe4f63053246345a2c57e2f06b0ccb/2244e/f0e7ff81ac2c98bc31814c39127602d9.jpg 400w,\n/static/04fe4f63053246345a2c57e2f06b0ccb/14b42/f0e7ff81ac2c98bc31814c39127602d9.jpg 800w,\n/static/04fe4f63053246345a2c57e2f06b0ccb/47498/f0e7ff81ac2c98bc31814c39127602d9.jpg 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/04fe4f63053246345a2c57e2f06b0ccb/58556/f0e7ff81ac2c98bc31814c39127602d9.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/04fe4f63053246345a2c57e2f06b0ccb/61e93/f0e7ff81ac2c98bc31814c39127602d9.webp 200w,\n/static/04fe4f63053246345a2c57e2f06b0ccb/1f5c5/f0e7ff81ac2c98bc31814c39127602d9.webp 400w,\n/static/04fe4f63053246345a2c57e2f06b0ccb/58556/f0e7ff81ac2c98bc31814c39127602d9.webp 800w,\n/static/04fe4f63053246345a2c57e2f06b0ccb/99238/f0e7ff81ac2c98bc31814c39127602d9.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}}]}},"pageContext":{"limit":12,"skip":36,"numPages":4,"currentPage":4,"id":4903,"name":"101","slug":"101","country":"US"}},"staticQueryHashes":["3949754563","4179947113","4202924991"]}
