After suffering for years from chronic pain due to intense migraines and fibromyalgia, [cannabis allowed me to stop using narcotics](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/how-we-can-disrupt-the-opioid-epidemic-with-cannabis). Those traditional pharmaceuticals didn’t provide much benefit other than occasionally masking the pain. Once I turned to cannabis, I found a solution that not only prevented my chronic pain but also helped me manage pain when it crawled through. Once I realized cannabis was a possible solution for me, I began experimenting and eventually found that microdosing was my path to success.\n\n![Hello6-min (6).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello6_min_6_6f0daaad5e.png)\n\n### Microdosing Cannabis as Effective Pain Relief\n\nWhen many people talk about microdosing, they mean taking small amounts of cannabis, waiting to feel the effects, and then taking more until you reach your desired result. The microdosing I want to talk about is taking small amounts of cannabis on a consistent basis to receive health benefits without the psychoactive effect.\n\nRespected cannabis doctor [Dr. Dustin Sulak noted substantial anecdotal evidence](https://www.projectcbd.org/sobre-cbd/clinical-research/dr-dustin-sulak-cannabis-dosing) within his practice over a period of years with microdosing. He said in a recent article, “*I discovered that most people have a certain threshold dosage of cannabis, below which they’ll actually experience a gradual increase in health benefits over time, and above which they’ll start building tolerance, experiencing diminishing benefits, and more side effects.*”\n\nAs with so much within the cannabis community, we depend upon anecdotal evidence as clinical research is scarce due to marijuana’s classification as a [Schedule 1 drug](https://www.dea.gov/drug-information/drug-scheduling#:~:text=Schedule%20I%20drugs%2C%20substances%2C%20or,). However, a recent [study conducted by University of California, San Diego, demonstrated positive results with microdosing](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3566631/). The study focused on subjects suffering from neuropathic pain and had them microdose through vaping. The results indicated that the patients who microdosed cannabis at 1.29% felt as much pain relief as the patients who used a medium dose at 3.53% cannabis. Those who microdosed less also felt better for a longer period of time than participants who ingested more.\n\n![Hello1.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_63481b85e9.png)\n\n### Lower Doses of THC May Enhance the Endocannabinoid System\n\nWhat’s most interesting about this study is its contrast with the average amount of [tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/thc) found in most vape pens or joints, which often stand at 14% and may even go as high as 95%. The amount of THC used within microdosing is substantially lower than what most consumers ingest in a typical sitting. Some hypothesize that microdosing on a consistent basis results in more positive benefits than higher doses because lower doses of cannabis enhance the [endocannabinoid system](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system) while much larger doses make our CB1 and CB2 receptors—the receptors that control appetite, pain, mood, and memoryless responsive. \n\n![Hello3.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello3_de8707650f.png)\n\n### My Personal CBD Microdosing Regimen\n\nMy version of microdosing includes a daily dose of tinctures high in [cannabidiol (CBD)](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/cbd); I like a ratio of 20:1 CBD to THC. I also use a low-dose tincture with 2.5 mg of THC per dose as many as two to three times a day. \n\nSince these THC doses are incredibly low, I never feel high, if anything, I just feel mildly relaxed. When a migraine does manage to sneak through, which is now rare, I vape a high-CBD pen of any one of the strains [Canna Tsu](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/canna-tsu), [ACDC](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/acdc), or [Harlequin](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/harlequin/). These strains contain around 20% CBD to 5% THC. Again, my goal is to manage pain and not get high, and without a doubt, I reach my goal. \n\nMicrodosing allows me to live a very full life, prevent chronic conditions, and manage pain when it happens. Without cannabis and this regime, I would be in bed for multiple days a month. Now I’m not dependent on narcotics, and I’m able to be far more functional across the board.\n\n![Hello5-min (6).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello5_min_6_18167593eb.png)\n\n### Microdosing Is Perfect for Newcomers & Seniors\n\nI feel that microdosing is the way to go for all newcomers to cannabis, as well as the fastest-growing group of medicinal marijuana users: senior citizens. These new consumers are faced with a confusing and disaggregated system. When walking into a typical dispensary, you’ll often come face to face with a 20-something budtender who might suggest an Indica gummy bear that contains 100 mg of THC, a chocolate bar with 1,000 mg, or a vape oil cartridge with a whopping 95% THC. Oftentimes, this is a recipe for disaster for the new patient.\n\n![Hello6-min (5).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello6_min_5_5d7926c2dd.png)\n\n### The Marijuana Market Needs to Catch Up\n\nUnfortunately, the cannabis marketplace is more focused on recreational consumers and hasn’t caught up with those of us using cannabis as medicine. What we need is a plethora of products that are between 2.5-5 mg per dose, whether that be a tincture, edibles, sublingual spray, or high CBD/low THC vape oil cartridges. \n\nThe bottom line is that the market has yet to catch up with consumer trends. My hope is that innovative manufacturers continue to release new products that address the new groups using medicinal marijuana, as well as the anecdotal and research-based evidence that supports microdosing cannabis.\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/cannabis-101) posts.\n\n### Get Your Medical Document & Purchase Medical Cannabis\n\nIt's easy to get your medical document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://www.hellomd.com/get-started/). But, here we sit in the age of legalization and despite what your parents may think today, perceptions of cannabis have changed greatly in recent years. Drugs became the scapegoat of all the issues that the country was facing, especially during the 1980s when First Lady Nancy Reagan made it her mission to have every child say “Just Say No.” to drugs, which focused the lens on cannabis. The billions of dollars spent on the War on Drugs since that time resulted in a dismal failure, but the stigma against marijuana remains.\r\n\r\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/58b49f05e99d85000ba3172d/embedded_images/58b49f08e99d85000ba3172e/Screen_Shot_2017-02-27_at_10.51.39_AM.png)\r\n The War on Drugs delivered images like this to your parents.\r\n\r\nFast forward to now, and it can be hard to convince your parents that a drug they were once told could turn you into a crazy, lazy, crime-creator could actually help ease their arthritis pain, quell anxiety or even make you a happier person. Yet, an open dialogue is the only way to break down the barrier between misrepresentation and the truth about cannabis. \r\n\r\nRELATED: [CANNABIS 101: THC VS CBD](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-thc-vs-cbd)\r\n\r\n### 1. Help Educate Your Parents\r\n\r\nAs a mid twenties millennial, the way I approached cannabis with my parents was at first extremely matter-of-fact. Though it may seem that an emotional appeal of other peoples’ success with marijuana-as-medicine may be the best way to change perceptions, I found that a science-first approach works best. \r\n\r\nThere are a numerous well documented scientific studies on cannabis that show its efficacy on a variety of medical conditions and how cannabis itself interacts with the body. To understand how cannabis can be a viable medication, it's best to tell your parents how it does not always produce psychoactive side effects. Instead, I told my parents how cannabis is full of [cannabinoids](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabinoids-and-the-immune-system) other than THC, like [CBD, which provides amazing medicinal benefits](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cbd-cannabidiol-the-medicine-of-the-future), all without even getting me high.\r\n\r\nCannabis is also full of [terpenes](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/what-are-terpenes-and-what-is-their-effect) which are non psychoactive and extremely beneficial to our health. Terpenes create the aromas and flavors within different strains and also deliver medicinal benefits to consumers. A terpene such as limonene can act as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and has even been purported to contain anti-cancer properties. Terpenes are good for us!\r\n\r\nThere are a variety of resources you can look to for scientific, peer-reviewed journal articles on the benefits of cannabis. Google Scholar can be one of your best friends by providing you access to many journal articles for free with a single click. \r\n\r\nThese studies, which come out of extremely reputable universities, can give your parents an insight into the success of cannabis in a purely scientific form. [HelloMD](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/download-our-medical-marijuana-patient-study) also provides you with a searchable platform were you can look at a variety of articles on many different medical conditions. These articles are also full of links to peer reviewed studies that show all of the good that cannabis can do in a condensed platform. \r\n\r\nAfter you have educated your parents on the scientific studies behind cannabis, then personal appeals will become that much more impactful. Focusing on scientific studies first when introducing cannabis to my parents gave them the context to look at [peoples’ personal successes](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/marijuana-insomnia-migraines-liz-s-success-story) as a medical triumph. HelloMD has a full range of interviews, in written and video form, which show how people have greatly benefited from cannabis. These types of personal appeals put scientific information into an even more real and understandable form. \r\n\r\n### 2. Mom, Dad, It's Just a Plant\r\n\r\nCannabis has been demonized for generations now, but in the end, it is just a plant. Cannabis as a healing and spiritual herb has been closely tied with human history for thousands of years, being featured in ancient Chinese and Indian history. Cannabis is also the same plant as hemp, just with different amounts of various cannabinoids that draw the line between a medical product and a food stuff. \r\n\r\nI found that a great way to change my parents perception of cannabis was to have them look at hemp itself. Hemp can now be found in almost any grocery store with a health foods section. Hemp seeds are full of essential fatty acids and important minerals, as well lots of protein. Hemp oil features many of the same important dietary qualities of hemp seeds and is filled with good-for-you fats that keep you full and energized. It’s is a great addition to anyone's diet and it doesn't have any of the negatives that are associated with cannabis. Using hemp can be a great bridge between the many misconceptions of cannabis and can show that the basic parts of the plant can have health benefits, even without large amounts of cannabinoids. \r\n\r\n### 3. Tell Your Parents that Bongs are Retro\r\n\r\nCannabis quality has changed greatly, even just in the last ten years. Cannabis is no longer only rolled up in a joint and smoked and a bong, it almost seems retro. Cannabis comes in many different forms, strengths, and with a variety of different administration methods. I have found that cannabis stigma increases when the consumption method is smoking, especially if you talk to your parents about smoking a spliff or a bong. Try talking to your parents about the multitude of ways it can be consumed discreetly and effectively.\r\n\r\nTo many people, the idea of smoking flower evokes thoughts of a specific smell, and conjures the old stoner image. Let's be honest too, specifically, your parents are probably afraid you will be the stoner they hoped you would not be. Yet, the forms of cannabis today, are most likely completely unrecognizable to your parents and also outside of the realm of the taboo. From topical products, to edibles to tinctures, cannabis can be taken in a variety of ways that do not involve smoking at all, and they need to be made aware of this. \r\n\r\nMany cannabis products today, are specifically curated and bred to target a particular condition or symptom. CBD is all the rage today, and is an anti inflammatory, an analgesic and an anti anxiety. CBD specific strains are known to help children who struggle with seizures live a more normal life and the intensely autistic calm violent tendencies. \r\n\r\n### You Can Change Perceptions\r\n\r\nThe bottom line is that marijuana is not a demon drug it has been made out to be and your influence and knowledge can help change the perceptions of those around you, even with your parents. With some science to back you up and some anecdotal evidence of medical success stories, even the most conservative of parents may have a change of heart (well maybe not the most conservative). \r\n\r\nStay positive, be who you are and feel empowered to educate your parents on the positive aspects of cannabis, of which there are many. Who knows, maybe one day you will even catch your Mom on the couch enjoying an edible to take the edge off after a stressful day at work. Anything is possible.\r\n\r\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Both of these guys are huge proponents of consuming cannabis during athletic pursuits, emphasizing that cannabis can actually enhance rather than diminish performance. Jim McAlpine believes in this idea so strongly, he is about to open the world’s first cannabis gym [Power Plant](http://powerplantgym.com/) with his partner Ricky Williams, a former NFL player.\n\nThe unique thing about Activation Spray is that it is a nifty little minty mouth spray that accurately doses 1mg of THC per spray. Each bottle contains 150 mg of THC, which is the equivalent of 150 mouth sprays. CannAthlete calls it “game-changing microdosing,” where the focus is on “elevation” of spirit rather than the effect of getting high. In the words of Seibo Shen:\n\n\"The athletes that we work with have benefitted immensely by integrating cannabis into their exercise programs. That’s why we decided to create our Activation Spray as a 1 mg of THC per dose product.  \n\nBeing able to hit your “sweet spot” as an athlete is important, and the ability to dose with 5X more accuracy than traditional microdose products is game-changing for those looking to increase focus but not detract from coordination and endurance. Don’t get high. Get elevated with CannAthlete Activation Spray.”\n\n![Hello6-min (13).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello6_min_13_af8a62d10e.png)\n\n### Microdosing Before My Workout\n\nWell, I am always game to hit my sweet spot, as he says, so I decided to give the Activation Spray a whirl while I exercised. Unfortunately, I hurt my shoulder while snowboarding, so my workout became workout-light with a one-hour session at San Francisco’s Dailey Method. Those ladies are fit and toned, though, so it can’t be too light.\n\nOpening up the spray in the locker room 15 minutes prior to class, I liked the discreet nature of the product. It is a lovely glass bottle that might be confused for a small perfume. When carrying cannabis products, I do not think that is necessarily a bad thing. \n\nNot wanting to become a cautionary tale, I chose to proceed with caution, so I shook the little love nugget and sprayed 3 squirts into my mouth, the equivalent of 3mg of THC. Wow, minty freshness in abundance, an incredible explosion of spearmint, all of which results in excellent Date-Night-Mouth (yes, DNM is real).\n\nI put my stuff into my locker and entered the Dailey Method class, and waited to feel the effects. The first thing that I noticed is that the onset of Activation Spray happened within 15 minutes, relatively quickly, which is a benefit of using a mouth spray. I also noticed that the music, which is always good at The Dailey Method, was more interesting and engaging than usual and that my focus turned to my breathing and the rhythm of movement and sound. \n\nIt did seem that I was also more focused, as promised, yet without the feeling of being high. My mind tends to wander when I do bar-method-like classes, so I found this to be extremely helpful. The effect of the spray seemed to last for a few hours, and all in all, I was very happy with the experience, something that I would choose to do again.\n\n![Hello2-min (29).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello2_min_29_5faf2ece50.png)\n\n### Microdosing Meets Snowboarding\n\nThe next week I took a trip to Squaw and got my groove on snowboarding in some of the best snow in years. My shoulder was still bothering me, so I took a couple of sprays from my Activation bottle. Again, I noticed a heightened awareness of my breathing, a sense of my own range of motion as well as a reduction in pain. Everyone reacts differently to cannabis, but I believe that based on my own experience, Activation Spray delivers on its promise.\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post.\n\n### Get a Medical Marijuana Card Online\n\nIt's easy to get your medical marijuana document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://www.hellomd.com/get-started/). Vaporizers are seen as a healthier alternative because they do not combust cannabis in the same way that smoking does. Ideally, vaporizers only reach the temperature of about 338 degrees Fahrenheit, which allows the cannabinoids to be vaporized without actually burning the leaves or cannabis extract being used. \n\nNot burning the plant reduces the number of potentially toxic elements that may be inhaled, specifically eliminating the negative residues that are associated with smoking cannabis. A [University of California at San Fransisco study](http://www.recoverytoday.net/articles/457-marijuana-vaporization) found that, “a smokeless cannabis-vaporizing device delivers the same level of active therapeutic chemical and produces the same biological effect as smoking cannabis, but without the harmful toxins”. The study, which was conducted with 18 participants found that patients received the same effects from smoking and vaporizing, but vaporizing produced little to carbon monoxide. \n\n### Vaping Decreases Respiratory Symptoms\n\nA [2010 study](http://www.recoverytoday.net/articles/457-marijuana-vaporization) from the University of New York in Albany found that marijuana and tobacco smokers had a decrease in respiratory symptoms when switching from smoking to vaporizing. Participants achieved a 24-83% decrease in negative respiratory symptoms, though some did express that it took them longer to feel the effects of vaporized cannabis compared to smoked cannabis. Ironically, vaporizing greatly decreases the risk of respiratory problems and other conditions like bronchitis. \n\n### Little to No Smell\n\nVaporizing marijuana also does not produce a strong smell like smoking cannabis does, which makes it better option for people have to take doses of cannabis away from home. Celebrities have shown support for vaporizers as opposed to smoking cannabis. Whoopi Goldberg has publicly expressed her love of her vaporizer, even writing a column in The Cannabist titled “My Vape Pen and I, a Love Story”. She touts the ease of vaporizing opposed to smoking because of its portability, discreetness, and ease of administration.\n\n### Different Heating Mechanisms\n\nDifferent vaporizers also heat the cannabis products differently. There are two main kinds of heating that is used in vaporizers: conduction and convection. Most of the vape pens on the market use conduction heating, where the herb or oil comes into direct contact with the heat source. Though this is effective, it can sometimes lead to the burning of herbs. \n\nIn convection heating, which is the most efficient way to vaporize, heated air is circulated around the herb or oil. There are some portable vaporizers on the market that use this method, however, they do tend to be on the higher-end of the market.\n\n### What Vaporizer is Best for You?\n\nThere are many different vaporizers on the market, which means there are ones that are able to fit everyones budget and goals. It is important to decide if you want to use concentrates or whole flower cannabis before looking into what vaporizer to buy because they are specialized for the type of cannabis that you enjoy. Vaporizers are a great alternative to smoking cannabis and provide people with a discrete, quick acting administration method without any adverse effects.\n\nThere are four main types of vaporizers on the market: flower pens, wax or oil based pens, table top vaporizers, and disposable vape pens. \n\n### Flower Pens\n\nFlower pens are vaporizers that are used to vaporize bud cannabis. They come in different shapes and sizes but they are always portable. They include what is known as a dry chamber for ground cannabis to be put into and they are either battery powered or rechargeable. Flower vape pens allow for people to consume whole flower cannabis, without the need to roll it into a joint or experience the adverse effects of smoking.\n\n### Wax or Oil Cartridge Vape Pen\n\nWax or Oil pens tend to range greatly in price, though they can be fairly inexpensive. They use concentrated oil or wax and they are often very slim and portable. They are powered by batteries or are rechargeable. Wax or oil pens are good for discretion because they are very slim and they can be easily refilled on the go. Oil cartridges are often interchangeable with other vape pen models. To use an oil cartridge you purchase the cartridge and screw it into a vape pen base. Wax pens require the consumer to load the wax into the pen. Not all wax pens accept cartridges and vice versa. These types of vape pens are among the most popular due to convenience, price and lack of smell.\n\n### Table Top Vaporizers\n\nTable top vaporizers are stationary and are plugged into a power source during use. They provide larger amounts of vapor which is usually held within a bag with an attached mouthpiece. This method allows patients to slowly inhale the vapor over time or share it with other people. Table top vaporizers also allow for the user to change the temperature depending on the type of cannabis they are using. The medicinal patient that needs highly concentrated and clean vaping will often opt for the tabletop version.\n\n### Disposable Vape Pen\n\nDisposable vape pens are beginning to pop up everywhere. Much like disposable e-cigarettes, disposable vape pens are pre-filled with a certain amount of cannabis oil and they are not made to be refilled after all of the oil has been vaporized. The downside to disposable vape pens is that you often are not able to see how much medicine is left in the pen.\n\nDo you have questions about about cannabis? Oh, Wait, No, I'm Not\n\nIf there are fifty ways to leave your lover, there must be fifty ways to ingest marijuana without getting high. Experience tells me there are more than fifty ways to leave a lover, but I may be pushing it with the cannabis. I touch on this topic because many people assume I’m stoned most of the day because I work in the cannabis industry. Certainly, there are others in this industry who most likely are, but it’s not me. Fuel is added to the ’You must always be stoned’ fire as I publicly write and talk about consuming cannabis on a daily basis for [migraines and fibromyalgia](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/migraines-how-i-got-off-pain-meds-and-found-relief-with-cannabis). The reality is, I rarely get high and usually if I do, it’s an accident (Oops).\n\nSo, I frequently take time to educate people on how to take cannabis in different ways where you can manage pain, insomnia, anxiety, depression, etc. without getting high. My prognostication, is a world-in-the-not-so-distant-future where everyday suburban Moms and the like have a full medicine chest/arsenal of mostly non-psychoactive cannabis that supports health and well being for the individual as well as the whole family. And, no, I am not an advocate or supportive of getting your kid high.\n\n### 50 Ways to Take Cannabis without Getting High \n\nOK, it’s going to be less than fifty for now, but it is a good start.\n\n### 1. Take a Higher Ratio of CBD to THC\n\nThere are 80+ cannabinoids in cannabis and the cannabinoids are [CBD is both an analgesic and an anti inflammatory](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cbd-cannabidiol-the-medicine-of-the-future). CBD will relax you, and take care of aches and pain. It’s my secret recipe for combatting migraines and it’s one of the reasons why legalization is sweeping the United States, because it helps with that many medical conditions. \n\nCBD is also the antidote to a high gone wrong. If you have a bad edibles trip, suck down some CBD and it will take the edge off the psychoactive trip. It’s like your Mother’s hand on your forehead when you have lost your proverbial shit.\n\n### 2. Micro Dose Your Marijuana\n\nIf you are an American, my guess is you think more is better or more is more effective. More is not better, more will help you lose your proverbial shit. [Micro dosing is a specialty of mine](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/578da024fdc17e000700019d/microdosing-cannabis-stopped-my-chronic-pain), as I always take products with some THC potency. The key to micro dosing for me is to never ever go above 2.5mg of THC in any single dose and to dose throughout the day when needed.\n\n### 3. Select a Vape Pen with High CBD \n\nI recently wrote an article on my love for [Bloom Farms new high CBD vape pen](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/bloom-farms-cbd-cartridge-review) which is called Electra Tsu. Rather than wax rhapsodic about it again, you can read my post as well as my heart felt haiku. If I really love you, I write you a haiku. Enough said.\n\nHigh CBD vape pens are a core component of my arsenal and they instantly relax me and I don’t get high. Depending on the ratio of CBD to THC it may be possible to get high, so of course micro dose or in other words ‘self titrate’.\n\n### 4. Rub it In Baby\n\nOh, for the love of a good cannabis topical! Cannabis topicals can help with sore muscles, nerve pain, cranky backs, sun burns, etc. I carry a topical with me in my purse everywhere I go due to an old Cross Fit injury (I know…why did I ever do that 'sport'?). As topicals do not cross into the bloodstream, you do not get high. I personally love [Sweet ReLeaf](https://www.hellomd.com/marijuana-topicals/deeply-soothing-body-butter).\n\n### 5. Stick it Where the Sun Don’t...\n\nI am happy to share that I use cannabis suppositories and they work well for me. When my back is killing me or I get bad cramps I stick in a Foria suppository, snuggle up on the couch with a bag of chips and Big Dog (my dog), turn on the TV to watch the movie ‘Bad Moms’ and sit it out for the long haul. They really work, relax your entire body but are not psychoactive. Personally, I would not drive or leave my couch for the next four hours but why would I want to do that anyway?\n\n### 6. Nibble on Low Dose Edibles \n\nOK, so to some, a low dose edible might be mildly psychoactive so proceed with caution. But, ALWAYS, proceed with uber caution with edibles as they are metabolized differently and can take up to two hours for you to feel the effect and for many the high can be MUCH stronger. Read my post of avoiding [‘Edisasters’](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/edibles-do-they-work-are-they-safe-avoiding-the-edi-saster) for more on this. \n\nThat said, I am a huge fan of the low dose edible for pain and most specifically for sleeping. My personal favorite are the Kiva 5mg chocolate love balls, that keep me in my slumber. No more waking up in a panic at 4am wondering when the next Zombie apocalypse is coming - thanks Walking Dead.\n\nLow dose is 5mg or less in my book. The typical person might feel slightly altered at 5mg, and this dosage is perfect for me for sleeping. Many people I know combat insomnia with 10mg, but those people are not me and we are talking about NOT getting high. So, start at 2.5mg one day and if it is not enough try a 5mg dose the next day. Most edibles are almost exclusively THC, but there are some new all CBD or hybrids to be sourced out in the wild!\n\nBe warned, some edibles, with less quality control, may have ‘hot spots’. A hot spot is where more THC has landed in a spot in the edible. This makes me very, very unhappy. I like reliability!\n\n### 7. Take a Tincture\n\nMy tinctures, they line up like little soldiers marching into battle. I have a variety that I use daily. I start my day with a 20:1 high CBD potency which seems to keep my migraines at bay, so far indefinitely. I then take a high CBD ‘Anxiety Tincture’ later in the day and that has a negligible amount of THC. I like the taste and it feels like the dosing is very easy to manage. Please know that when you get into any ratio of 4:1 or lower you start to get into more psychoactive territory.\n\n### 8. Have Tea with the Queen\n\nI like to think of myself as a Queen and yes, we can have tea. There are many new product manufacturers that are making high CBD ratio teas. Tea is soothing and for me it offers full body relaxation when combined with a high CBD to THC ratio. Call me when you want to have tea, I like Thursday afternoons.\n\n### 9. Take a Hot Bath…ALONE\n\nI have several rules in how to live my life to the fullest, and one is to never live in a house that does not have a bath. There are many more rules around the bath itself, but this is not about that. The only thing better than taking a hot bath after a bad day is taking a bath in a CBD-rich ‘Restorative Soak’. Yes, the Gods created bath salts that are a blend of epsom salts and and cannabis oil. The last time my back was killing after a killer vinyasa session I hopped in the bath with my iPad and locked the door and did not emerge for hours. Love the [Relax Bath Soak by HoneyBeeBuzzed](https://www.getsava.com/shop/honey-bath-soak/). LOVE.\n\n### 10. Go to Yoga and Enjoy an Awesome Forearm Stand\n\nMy test for whether a product meets my standards is whether I can do yoga and I'm happier, relaxed, centered and not high as a kite. So maybe this is not advocating a certain way of ingesting cannabis, but cannabis that doesn't get you high can also help you focus better during your athletic pursuits. It helps push my practice into a different realm. I like to take a high CBD tincture before yoga and without a doubt I am Birding My Paradise or doing an epic forearm stand. \n\nDo you have questions about this article? In this review I am going to share my absolute favorite CBD product available in California. It has altered me, forever, for the better!\n\n### Bloom Farms – CBD Electra-Tsu Cartridge\n\nBloom Farms is a beloved manufacturer within the California cannabis industry. The packaging is dead gorgeous, the vape pen experience is exceptional and the cannabis is sourced from top tier farms that harvest crops with organic practices. Often when you mention Bloom Farms, people get a happy look upon their face, and why not, they deliver a great experience. As a more or less purely medicinal consumer with a very low THC tolerance, I have found high THC vape pens simply have not worked well for me. So for the most part, Bloom Farms has not been an option for a cannabis consumer like myself. That is, until now!\n\n### Electra-Tsu is a CBD Bombshell\n\nLet’s be totally clear, Bloom Farms CBD Electra-Tsu oil 3:1 cartridge has officially stolen my heart. It has run away with it, hands down, this is my favorite CBD vape pen experience of all time. I can stop looking, I want to get married. Really.\n\nI have tried many CBD vape pens over the years and some work pretty well, enough to take the edge off of a migraine but none sent me to the moon. Taking an inhale of the Electra-Tsu, the woody flavor is lovely, with a tinge of a sweet aftertaste. The feeling of deep relaxation after a few inhales is exquisite. It is usually at this point I assume I will start getting sleepy, but with Electra-Tsu, there was a little kick of happiness and euphoria, which I guess is related to it being sativa-dominant. The ratio of 3 parts CBD to 1 part THC seems to be the perfect ratio, for me at least, and it turned my headache on its heels! This is a 'borderline' psychoactive oil cartridge, I felt GREAT but not altered significantly. It was just just enough! \n\nElectra-Tsu deserves to be placed in the limelight. She was bred specifically to be higher in CBD than THC. CBD happens to be non psychoactive as well, so it is a great choice for pain relief when you also need to function. The strain was bred from the combination of Electra and Tsunami and because the ratio of CBD is so high to THC, you will not feel like you need to go to bed or can’t leave the couch. It is also noted that this strain was bred to treat “pain, stress, and depression, without any anxiety or paranoid side effects”. I completely agree, as a person who tends to get cannabis-induced anxiety, this strain absolutely lives up to the promise. I purchased my cartridge at Sava, which does state wide delivery.\n\n### My Bloom Farms Haiku\n\nIf I were to write a Haiku about my love of the CBD Electra-Tsu vape pen and my gratitude to Bloom Farms for releasing a CBD product to an audience like me it would go like this:\n\n>Electra-Tsu you\n\n>Stole my heart instantly\n\n>Please don’t go away.\n\nEVER.\n\nDo you have questions about Bloom Farms? With so much variety, how do you know which methods of delivery are best for you? Never fear, we’ll go over some of all the most popular ways to consume CBD so you can find a delivery method that works well for your needs. \n\n### CBD Oil Can Come From Cannabis Or Hemp\n\nCBD can be sourced from marijuana or hemp, and while they’re the same species of plant—_Cannabis sativa_—there are [some differences between the two](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55f4509e64633100064f0000/hemp-and-cannabis-for-medicinal-purposes-is-there-a-difference). Hemp is naturally low in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and high in CBD. Hemp-based CBD oil is sold across the country and tends to be more accessible. These oils have a THC content that’s less than 0.3%, making them eligible to be sold outside of dispensaries, though they tend to contain far less CBD than oil derived from cannabis.\n\nCBD oil made from cannabis contains more than 0.3% THC and also contains higher levels of complementary phytocannabinoids. Both THC and CBD are phytocannabinoids found in cannabis, but the plant actually contains many other phytocannabinoids in lower levels. These other phytocannabinoids are also believed to have medicinal qualities, and they are thought to interact with both CBD and THC to produce greater medicinal effects than each individual phytocannabinoid could do alone. \n\nThis phenomenon is known as the entourage effect, and many people claim that without the additional cannabinoids, CBD is far less effective medicinally. \n\n\n### How CBD Oil is Made \n\nUnless you’re smoking or vaping high CBD flower, all CBD that’s consumed must first be extracted from the plant. [CBD](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55e12afb6539390006040000/cbd-oil-breaking-the-stereotypes-of-cannabis) is extracted from marijuana using a variety of solvents—a liquid that separates cannabis’s beneficial components like CBD and THC from the rest of the plant. The solvent and extraction method used depends on what the manufacturer intends to make with the end product. \n\nOne of the most common methods of CBD oil extraction is through the use of carbon dioxide or CO2. This method uses low temperatures and high pressures to create a potent and pure CBD oil. Ethanol is also commonly used in the extraction process, and when done appropriately, is better at preserving terpenes, aromatic compounds found in cannabis that can also contribute to the entourage effect. \n\nThe end result of these extraction processes is a thick resinous CBD oil or extract that can be made into a variety of products. \n\n### 1. CBD Oil Can Be Mixed With Liquids to Make Tinctures\n\nA CBD tincture consists of CBD oil that’s mixed with a liquid so that it can be administered via dropper. In herbal medicine, tinctures are herbal extracts mixed with a liquid—often alcohol or vegetable glycerin. CBD oils can be compounded with both of these liquids, but it’s more common to find CBD oils mixed with olive oil, hemp oil and fractionated coconut oil. This addition of healthy fats makes it easier for your body to process CBD. In the cannabis world, tinctures refer to CBD or THC oils that are compounded in liquid—whether it be alcohol, glycerin or another oil. \n\nTinctures can contain cannabis oils with CBD and little-to-no THC, while others come in varying CBD to THC ratios. A tincture can be taken through a dropper directly into the mouth or mixed into food or drink. Tinctures can be a discreet method of administration for cannabis, making it a good option for patients who need doses throughout the day. \n\n### 2. CBD Oils as Sublingual Sprays\n\nSublingual sprays are concentrated cannabis tinctures that are sprayed under the tongue. By holding these products under your tongue where a large number of capillaries provide a direct route for cannabis to enter your bloodstream, consumers should be able to feel the CBD oil’s effects in as little as 15 minutes. \n\nYou can get sublingual sprays in a variety of CBD to THC ratios, depending on your desired results. Care by Design makes a range of high CBD sublingual tinctures with varying amounts of THC. \nSublingual sprays can be discreet and allow for a patient to have a choice of multiple different CBD to THC ratios depending on what symptoms they are trying to target, or the time of day they are administering their medication. \n\n### 3. CBD Oil Can Be Baked Into Edibles\n\nCBD oil can be ingested directly, but many consumers prefer to put the oil into capsules to be taken like regular pills. CBD oil or decarboxylated flower can also be mixed into different foods like smoothies, or it can be baked into edibles. Pre-made CBD edibles are available in dispensaries and can be a great option for people who desire to have a discreet administration method for their medical cannabis.\n\nCBD edibles, like tinctures come in varying CBD to THC ratios. Depending on the amount of THC in the edibles, you may want to start with a small amount, wait for 30 minutes to an hour to see how you feel, and then take more as needed. \n\n### 4. CBD Topicals \n\n[Topical products](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/57056541347686000800015a/cannabis-topicals-provide-relief-for-sore-muscles-and-pain) come in a variety of different forms, from salves to creams, and can be applied directly to the skin. CBD topicals have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. \n\nTopical products are typically non-psychoactive, no matter their concentration of THC or CBD. CBD topicals can aid in reducing inflammation, which can help people who suffer from conditions such as arthritic joint pain or muscle aches. \n\n### 5. Vaporizing CBD Oil Offers Immediate Effects\n\nVaporizing allows for the effects of CBD to be felt quickly and tends to be a cleaner method of inhaling cannabis than smoking. Vaporizers come in many shapes and forms—some are convenient and portable while others, known as desktop vaporizers, must be plugged into an outlet for use. \n\nSome vaporizers consist of a battery unit and a refillable cartridge that contains CBD oil. These cartridges are usually disposable and consumers buy a new cartridge when needed. Good examples of these are the Bloom Farms Highlighters and associated cartridges. \n\nDesktop vaporizers aren’t portable and usually must be plugged into a power source to function. These often have much more potent effects than portable vaporizers and can often be used to consume both CBD concentrates and flowers. \n\nVape technology is always improving and now there are a few vaporizers on the market that allow consumers to vape both high CBD concentrates and flowers on-the-go. For example, the PAX 3 allows consumers to vaporize both CBD extracts and bud in a sleek, portable design. \n\nSome vaporizers can be costly, so for those who are hesitant about such a commitment, there are also high CBD disposable vape pens available. DomPens are disposable and a good option for convenient, on-the-go vaporizing. \n\n### 6. Smoking High CBD Marijuana Strains\n\nIf none of the above methods of CBD consumption appeal to you, you can always go with a classic: smoking. Smoking CBD can be done through a variety of means—joints, pipes and bongs are the most common. Like vaporizing, smoking CBD imparts immediate effects. The following are a few high CBD strains that you may want to look out for if considering this method. \n\n* Charlotte’s Web was created for a young girl who suffered from seizures. This strain has less than 0.3% THC and about 13% CBD. Charlotte’s web is a sativa and has no psychoactivity associated with it. Charlotte’s Web is popular for the treatment of seizures, but it can also be very helpful for other conditions that respond positively to high levels of CBD. \n\n* Canna-Tsu is a CBD-rich hybrid of Cannatonic and Sour Tsunami, which are both individually high CBD strains. Canna-Tsu, unlike Charlotte’s Web, has noticeable amounts of the cannabinoids THC and CBN, but it is highest in CBD. Canna-Tsu is about 13% CBD and is a great choice for pain management and anxiety. Most patients do not experience psychoactivity while using Canna-Tsu. It does, however, have about 10% THC, so some psychoactivity is possible for patients who are particularly sensitive. \n\n* Harlequin is a sativa-dominant hybrid with a 5:2 ratio of CBD to THC. Harlequin has little to no psychoactivity and is particularly helpful for people with stress, anxiety, or depression, because of its low content of THC compared to CBD. Harlequin can also be helpful for pain management, especially during the day for patients who do not want to experience any psychoactivity.\n\nDo you have questions about CBD? Because of the DEA’s Schedule I classification of cannabis deeming it without medicinal value, research in the U.S. has been slow and limited. Though scientists worldwide have only scratched the surface on the far-reaching benefits of the plant’s numerous phytocannabinoids, experiential evidence puts the number of ailments which can be treated with cannabis in the dozens, if not hundreds. Some hundred or so phytocannabinoids exist in the plant, though currently, only a few have been isolated and are being put to work in cannabis medicine formulations. Of the six most prominently used - CBD, CBDA, THC, THCA, CBN and CBG -- THC is the only one that is psychoactive. (CBN, which is aged THC, is considered to be mildly psychoactive).\n\n### You are Unique\n\nEvery body is different, there is no one-size-fits-all for cannabis medicine. So, unlike the western medical model, in which we’ve willingly turned our wellness over to the (presumed) wisdom of the person in a white coat, cannabis medicine requires that YOU experiment and find just the right method of delivery and dosage for you -- whether it be edibles, flower, concentrate, topicals, tinctures, or some combination thereof. As you enter into this experiment, mindfulness is key. Keep a journal. Write down what you’re taking, the dose, the effects, what you liked, and what you didn’t like. Return to the entry later, when the dose/effects have worn off. Write some more about your experience. Return to these entries often, for reference, until you know what works for you!\n\n### The Bad Edibles Trip\n\nEdibles are serious (and, often, seriously delicious) medicine. A bad THC edible trip is just not fun. It usually goes something like this:\n\n>You take a bite of the edible.\n\n>You forget it was a dose of MEDICINE, because, hey! It doesn’t even taste like weed! \n\n>You wait a few minutes. Maybe a half hour. Nothing happens. You’re getting impatient.\n\n>The edible taunts you. “I’m delicious. I don’t taste like weed! Eat me.”\n\n>Despite the fact that you’ve educated yourself, and/or been warned about the potency of the edible, you fold under the temptation. You take another bite. Maybe two. Or maybe - gulp - you finish the entire edible.\n\n>Two hours later, you’re higher than you’ve ever been, and it isn’t necessarily a good experience. \n\n>You’re paranoid, anxious, fearful. Maybe you believe you are dying or have died. It’s dark. The darkest you’ve ever felt.\n\n>Perhaps you get nauseous. Maybe the room spins. You might vomit. \n\n>And it goes on like this for hours and hours…\n\n### How Edibles Work\n\nEdibles are cannabis-infused foods -- candies, cookies, pretzels, gummies, popcorn, chocolate bars, capsules, drinks -- with new products coming to market every day. THC edibles can be very powerful medicine, (and, according to at least two studies, so can [CBD edibles which just may turn into THC in stomach acid](http://online.liebertpub.com/doi/pdfplus/10.1089/can.2015.0004)). Once an edible is swallowed, THC works its way through the gastrointestinal system before it is broken down in the liver and distributed out into the bloodstream, producing the high felt in the body and mind. This entire process can take two hours or more, depending on an individual’s metabolism. The peak of the THC high can last up to six hours and residual effects may be felt for more than ten hours. You can see why edibles are NOT recommended for people who are brand new to cannabis and have never experienced a THC high. It is also not recommended for anyone with eating disorders or food compulsions. (For cannabis novices, it’s best to try a different method of delivery, such as tinctures or inhalation.). A bad edible experience could cause someone who might otherwise really benefit from cannabis to swear if off completely. \n\n### The 'Dowd Effect'\n\nTwo years ago, Maureen Dowd wrote a cautionary piece for the New York Times in which she recounted a less-than-pleasurable evening of overdoing it with an edible at her hotel room in Denver. Colorado tour operator and Dowd’s dispensary chaperone Matt Brown disputed the piece, saying Dowd had been warned during the four or so hours she spent with him while shopping for cannabis. Regardless of the she-said, he-said, Dowd’s piece spurred a Colorado edible dosing education campaign and birthed the slogan. Start Low and Go Slow. (SLaGS). If you’re thinking of trying edibles, or really ANY method of delivery for cannabis, consider this your mantra. Learn it. Practice it. Share it with others. \n\nAre you taking any other medications? Be sure to ask your doctor about any possible drug interactions. If your doctor gives you the okay, be sure to wait at least a couple of hours after taking other medications before taking your edible dose.\n\n\n### How to Dose Your Edible\n\n>Take your first edible dose in the privacy of your own home, at a time when you can relax, preferably a couple of hours before bedtime.\n\n>Never take an edible on an empty stomach!\n\n>Never take an edible with alcohol!\n\n>5-15 milligrams is considered in the cannabis world a starter dose, but remember this is powerful medicine and effects range from person to person. SLaGS!\n\n>If you’re brand new to cannabis, start with a microdose of 1.0 - 2.5 milligrams.\n\n>Cut/tear/pull your desired dose off the edible, put it aside.\n\n>Wrap up the rest of the edible and put it away.\n\n>Consume your edible.\n\n>Wait TWO HOURS for full effect. \n\n>Record the effects in your journal, if you are able.\n\n>After two hours, If necessary, consume another microdose 1.0 - 2.5 milligrams. If you find that you are too high, tell yourself this feeling will pass. (I promise it will!) \n\nOnce your edible is in full effect, go to bed! You’ll have a great night’s sleep!\nIf you should need to get up in the night for any reason, sit up slowly and wait until you have adjusted to any sensations you are experiencing. Depending on how long the edible has been in your system, you may still feel high or feel a bit groggy or sleepy. Go slowly and mindfully. When you wake up from the edible, record any further information in your journal. Share your newfound wisdom with others!\n\nDo you have questions about edibles? Sweet ReLeaf has created one of the most effective and enjoyable topicals on the market today which is creamy and smells wonderful. As Didi says \"We believe in the healing power of plants, specifically how the human endocannabinoid system communicates with the compounds found in Cannabis. We like to call it ‘Intelligent Medicine.’\" In her this blog post Didi talks about why THC matters in topicals.\n\n### The Importance of THC In Cannabis Topicals\n\nThough CBD has been on the tip of everyone’s tongue lately, we’re taking a look at how vital THC is to the pain equation.\n\nCannabis is made up of over 500 compounds and cannabinoids represent around 85 of them. The most significant cannabinoids, by and large, have been THC, THCa, and CBD. In today's news, CBD (or cannabidiol) has practically become a buzzword. Vogue magazine recently wrote about how marijuana-infused products can give you better orgasms. Whoopi Goldberg's new line of menstrual cycle pain relief products contains CBD exclusively. Even nuns have gotten into the CBD product market.\n\nAlthough CBD hosts a myriad of benefits and its non-psychoactive effects are a commercial favorite the star player is still THC when it comes to pain relief. CBD and THC have very similar benefits, but vary in how they interact with our bodies. \n\n### The History of THC\n\nTHC as an isolated compound was discovered by Dr. Raphael Mechoulam in 1964 at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel. He and his associates were able to successfully extract THC from cannabis allowing them to study it exclusively. Dr. Mechoulam is a strong advocate for cannabis as medicine and his research has led to several other discoveries about cannabis including the discovery of the human endocannabinoid system. This naturally occurring system communicates organically with cannabis compounds.\n\n### What is THC?\n\nTHC (or tetrahydrocannabinol) is the chemical compound found in most marijuana plants. When smoked or ingested, THC stimulates brain cells to release dopamine creating a euphoric high. If THC is applied to the skin, however, it skips the bloodstream and causes no mind-altering effects. It does, however, penetrate deeper tissues to bring relief for pain and inflammation.\n\n### What is THCa?\n\nTHCa, essentially, is the mother of THC. It is a non-psychoactive acid that, once heated to a certain temperature, eventually becomes THC. This process is called 'decarbing' (short for decarboxylating). When used in its purest form, THCa can relieve pain with less dosage than THC or CBD.\n\n### What is CBD?\n\nCBD is often the more submissive compound in cannabis strains. With selective breeding, however, there have been developments of strains containing mostly CBD and almost no THC. CBD is non-psychoactive and tends to create an all-over effect, flooding the entire body.\n\n### THC & Pain\n\nPain, in essence, is nothing more than a communication between our brain and our body to signify that something is wrong. Pain can be felt in different ways. We can feel pain through our nervous system, through our tissues and organs and even through our imagination. THC can intercept this communication and prevent pain from being experienced on a physical level. One of the mechanisms in our bodies which regulates pain is our own endocannabinoid system. \n\nInhaled or ingested, THC carries side-effects like euphoria, sleepiness and increased appetite. These are life-saving benefits to patients with AIDS, cancer, and other serious illnesses. \n\nBut for some, this could be a hindrance to their daily lives. Perhaps a patient has small children to look after and needs as much energy as possible. Those who work in fields that require random drug testing also have to avoid smoking and ingesting cannabis. In these cases, THC-rich topicals provide effective options.\n\n### THC vs. CBD\n\nThe comparison comes down to patient need. CBD is often prescribed to children and those who need a powerful medicine without mood or mind-altering side effects. However, THC is simply more potent. You need less of it to experience relief and it can be extremely useful in calming and sedating patients who need serious help overcoming intense pain or psychological episodes. \n\nTHC used topically is the best of both worlds. It affects the source of pain quickly and exclusively and produces no high to the user. Because it skips the bloodstream, cannabis topicals are undetectable in drug tests and don’t upset the patient’s ability to function. THC-based topicals are a great option for people living with conditions such as:\n\n### Chronic Pain and Arthritis \n\nBy applying directly on the joints, muscles and other parts of the body, even people with chronic pain see immediate results.\n\n### Menstrual Cramps \n\nMenstrual cramps are essentially muscle aches caused by minor contractions. Applying a THC-rich topical to the site will decrease cramps if not eliminate them altogether.\n\n### Skin Conditions \n\nConditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and acne can all be treated and even cured with a THC-heavy cannabis topical. Because these conditions are often a sign of a larger problem, a cannabis topical should be part of a holistic approach to correcting the imbalance.\n\n### Migraine Headaches \n\nRecent studies have shown that topical cannabis reduces headache frequency when applied directly to the temple.\n\nWhether you prefer an all-over body high, a euphoric mindstate or area-specific pain relief, the first step is to do your research. Don’t be turned off by THC’s less desirable side effects. And don’t automatically assume CBD isn’t strong enough for your condition. Cannabis gives birth to a diverse array of options depending on needs and preferences. THC may be the very thing missing in your treatment plan. We encourage you to ask questions, do your research and stay open to how cannabis and all its cannabinoids can heal.\n\nDo you have questions about Sweet ReLeaf? The job of a cannabis consultant, to put it into the simplest terms, is to match customers and patients with proper marijuana strains and product types. Finding a good cannabis consultant is important to enjoying your experience with marijuana. Getting knowledgable advice based on your needs can help prevent a possibly poor experience with cannabis. Each cannabis consultant is different and there is no standardized training or information, though there are many different online training courses. A HelloMD study found that 66% of respondents get their information for product selection from a cannabis consultant at their local dispensary, showing a good consultant is increasingly important to the well-being of patients. \r\n\r\n### Education is Key\r\nMax Montrose, the president of the Trichome Institute, a cannabis education company, created a bud tender certification when he saw the lack of knowledge in the field. Montrose was interviewed by Ganjapreneur where he outlined what skills were necessary for a good cannabis consultant, all of which he features in his online certification. Montrose’s program covers the biological differences between different strains of marijuana, the different products that are on the market, and other skills needed for consultants, like understanding slang. \r\n\r\nMontrose’s program outlines what the ideal cannabis consultant would be knowledgable in, but the one of the most important aspects is that they have been informed by good reliable sources. Here’s what to look for in a cannabis consultant at your local dispensary. It's important to note that not every amazing bud tender has gone through a certification program as many have years of experience in the undustry to back them up. That said, it is important that newly minted bud tenders know what they are talking about.\r\n\r\n### Understanding the Biology\r\n\r\nYour cannabis consultant should be knowledgable in all things marijuana. Cannabis consultants should know the ins and outs of different strains, past just the variation between indica and sativa. It is important that they understand different strains, their concentrations of cannabinoids, and what effect they will have on your body. A good cannabis consultant should also be informed on all of the latest medical and scientific studies. \r\n\r\n### Product Types\r\n\r\nDispensaries are now filled with everything from buds to edibles to topical products. Each of these products will effect you differently and are beneficial for different conditions and symptoms. Your cannabis consultant should be knowledgable on which type of cannabis product would be best for the symptoms you have described to them. Each dispensary also has a variety of products on hand and your cannabis consultant should be educated on what they have available to know what to recommend to you. \r\n\r\n### Anecdotal Knowledge\r\n\r\nA good cannabis consultant should have their ear to the ground and have an idea of how products have effected other patients. Knowing how previous patients have reacted to the product will help a cannabis consultant be able to better predict how different tolerance levels will react to a product and what conditions a product is effective at helping. \r\n\r\n### A Good Bud Tender is the Key to a Good Experience\r\n\r\nThe consumer base in the marijuana industry is increasingly demanding more information about their products. Educated cannabis consultants are crucial to a positive experience of patients because they can decrease the guessing game of choosing the correct products. As researchers strove to learn more about how cannabis affected the human body, they discovered a series of cannabinoid receptors, which respond to cannabinoids produced by the body and those present in marijuana. \n\nCannabinoid receptors are found in the brain, organs, connective tissue, glands and immune cells, making them essential to the function of almost all parts of the human body. All animal species, with the exception of bugs, have an endocannabinoid system, and researchers believe it evolved approximately 600 million years ago. Though there are many gaps in the scientific knowledge of the endocannabinoid system, scientists have still gathered a lot of information on its function within the human body.\n\nThe endocannbinoid system responds to both endocannabinoids, cannabinoids produced within the body, and phyotocannabinoids, cannabinoids that are sourced from plants. There are believed to be several endocannabinoids, but the two most well understood are anandamide and 2-arachidonolyglycerol.\n\nPhytocannabinoids have mostly been identified from Cannabis sativa, but they have also been found in other medicinal herbs, such as Echinacea purpura. The most well-known cannabinoids from cannabis are THC and CBD. Cannabinoids can be psychoactive, as is the case with THC, though most cannabinoids are non-psychoactive. \n\n### The Endocannabinoid System in the Human Body\n\nScientists believe there are more cannabinoid receptors present than any other receptor in the human body. Two specific kinds of cannabinoid receptors have been identified to make up the endocannabinoid system. The CB1 receptor is normally present in the nervous system, connective tissues, gonads, glands and organs, whereas the CB2 receptor is present in the immune system and associated structures.\n\nDue to the fact that cannabinoid receptors reach into almost every part of the body, cannabinoids are integral in many different bodily functions. Cannabinoids are used in intercellular communication, and since their discovery, have helped us better understand the bridges between body and mind. \n\nCannabinoids are also crucial in the process of maintaining homeostasis within cells and the body as a whole. The endocannabinoid system regulates autophagy, a process in which the cell segregates one part of its contents to be self-digested. It's extremely important that the body maintain the correct balance of cannabinoids in order to function properly and keep the whole body healthy.\n\n“While this process keeps normal cells alive, allowing them to maintain a balance between the synthesis, degradation, and subsequent recycling of cellular products, it has a deadly effect on malignant tumor cells, causing them to consume themselves in a programmed cellular suicide. The death of cancer cells, of course, promotes homeostasis and survival at the level of the entire organism,” said Dustin Sulak, DO to Norml. \n\n### How Cannabis Works on Our Endocannabinoid System\n\nCannabinoids from marijuana can stimulate or mimic our natural cannabinoid production. When phytocannabinoids are introduced, they can cause an increase of cannabinoid receptors in the body. This increase in cannabinoid receptors can help to explain why people don't “feel” any effects the first time they take marijuana. But their heightened number of cannabinoid receptors, once they've previously introduced cannabinoids into their body, causes a more prominent effect.\n\nCannabis can work synergistically with the endocannabinoids produced inside the body to bring the body into homeostasis. Cannabis, unlike other synthetic medications, works in harmony with the body to bring it into health by obtaining equilibrium. \n\n### The Key to Many Chronic Illnesses\n\nClinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency (CECD) is believed to occur when endocannabinoid levels are found to be persistently lower than healthy control. The cause of CECD is unknown, but it is believed that an imbalance of cannabinoids could either be congenital or acquired throughout a period of time. Low endocannabinoid levels could be the cause of some chronic illnesses, rather than just a symptom. CECD is most often attributed to fibromyalgia, migraines, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and cystic fibrosis. \n\nMany sufferers of the five conditions that are thought to be attributed to CECD often feel relief when using marijuana as a medication. Cannabinoids, such as THC, have been found to inhibit serotonin release in migraine sufferers, thereby relieving symptoms.\n\nIBS is thought to be related to endocannabinoid and serotonergic signaling. Though research into the connection is limited, this connection suggests that CB receptors may be a good target in alleviating IBS-related complications.\n\nASD has been linked to dysfunctional endocannabinoid signaling. This altered endocannabinoid expression suggests that there may be scientific backing for the anecdotal reports from parents who've had success administering medical marijuana to their children with ASD.\n\nAnd finally, 2011 study suggests that chronic congenital cystic fibrosis is the result of imbalanced endocannabinoid levels, indicating that phytocannabinoids could be viable routes of treatment. \n\n### How Can Cannabis Help?\n\nThe endocannabinoid system is all about balance and equilibrium. Finding the proper treatment is unique to each individual because it involves balancing cannabinoids found in the body with those provided by medical marijuana. Most current research seems to point to success using high-THC, low-CBD strains when combatting CECD-related conditions. That said, CBD appears to be very helpful in alleviating symptoms in other conditions. \n\nAs more research is done on the endocannabinoid system in the human body, medical marijuana prescriptions can become more precise and be less of a trial-and-error process. The increase in knowledge of the benefits of medical marijuana in aiding the body's own endocannabinoid system is crucial.\n\nDoctors today don't even learn about the endocannabinoid system in medical school, which is extremely detrimental to the overall health of the population. The first textbook on medical marijuana, however, is being released on May 31, 2016, giving hope for increased learning on the endocannabinoid system. \n\nInterested in asking a question about this topic? HerbaBuena is well known for their social events which allow its members to gather and learn about the therapeutic benefits of cannabis and the products that suit them best. This week, Alicia discusses the philosophy behind creating products with the whole plant and why the entourage effect is important.\r\n\r\n**The Entourage Effect - Why It Matters**\r\n\r\nCannabis contains more than 400 compounds, 80 of which are currently categorized as cannabinoids, and all of which act synergistically together to create an “entourage effect” – or an effect that when used together magnifies the therapeutic benefits of the individual components. Better said, the medicinal impact of the whole plant is greater than the sum of its parts. The innate plant intelligence of cannabis as a healing herb is unparalleled, likely due to the sheer number of compounds working together to create a therapeutic effect.\r\n \r\nHerbaBuena Elixirs for example, are crafted to maintain whole plant intelligence, through solution-specific, synergistic herbal blends as functional medicine. And our cultivation projects focus on strains with balanced cannabinoid profiles – such as Cannatonic Rich CBD.\r\n\r\n**Whole Cannabis Flower vs. Hemp**\r\n\r\nStudies have shown that 100 milligrams of single-molecule CBD is not equivalent to 100 milligrams of a CBD-rich whole plant cannabis extract. As part of our own anecdotal evidence, we’ve seen that not all CBD is created equal, and that the compound derived from industrial hemp doesn’t have the same efficacy for patients as whole flower cannabis sativa extract. This is why all our CBD products are flower based.\r\n \r\n**Primary Cannabinoids**\r\n\r\nStudies show that the combined effect of these compounds working together is greater than that if they’re used alone. In light of this, our hope is to continue working with geneticists and chemists to develop cannabinoid-specific plants – to offer a more consistent and targeted effect, without compromising the benefit of the entourage effect of the whole plant spectrum. Here’s a list of the primary cannabinoids found in modern day cannabis.\r\n \r\n**THC:** One of the only psychoactive compounds, it offers a euphoric effect that can get us out of our bodies and into our mind, whereby the greatest healing can occur. It has also been shown to relieve pain, reduce vomiting and nausea, suppress muscle spasms, stimulate appetite, and is known to be the pre-cursor to the bioavailability of CBD.\r\n \r\n**THCA:** The raw, pre-heated (pre-decarboxylated) form of THC has been shown to reduce inflammation, inhibit cancer cell and tumor growth, suppress muscle spasms, and potentially to balance the ESC without the psychoactive effect. Found in things like kief and raw juice.\r\n \r\n**CBD:** Has been shown to relieve pain, reduces inflammation, slow bacterial growth, reduce blood sugar levels, reduce seizures and convulsions, reduce risk of artery blockage, inhibit growth of cancer cells and tumors, treat psoriasis, moderates psychosis, suppress muscle spasms, relieve anxiety, promote bone growth, modulate immune system function, reduce small intestine contractions, and protect against nervous system degeneration. It is also an antidote to the effects of THC.\r\n \r\n**CBN:** Has been shown to relieve pain, provide a sedative effect for sleep and suppress muscle spasms\r\n \r\n**CBG:** Has been shown to slow bacterial growth, reduce inflammation, inhibit cancer cell and tumor growth.\r\n \r\n**THCv:** Has been shown to suppress appetite, help with weight loss, reduce seizures and convulsions and promote bone growth. We’re working on cultivating stable strains of flowers from which we can extract this powerful compound.\r\n\r\nIf you are interested in attending one of [HerbaBuena's](http://herbabuena.com/) social events, take a look at their [online social calendar](http://herbabuena.com/the-social-club/).\r\n\r\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post.
