There are available remedies for menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and mood swings. Some of these options include lifestyle changes, holistic therapies, and hormonal treatments. \n \nBut for a large and growing number of women, cannabis [is seen as an all-natural and effective alternative](https://www.healthline.com/health-news/why-some-experts-say-cannabis-can-be-effective-in-treating-menopause-symptoms)\nfor managing many of the symptoms of menopause. Luckily, if you're a resident of Illinois, you can choose from a long list of innovative cannabis products for the relief of menopause symptoms. \n\n![Cannabis can be an effective treatment for menopause](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_04_12_at_1_12_00_PM_746969a743.png)\n \n### Menopause: A Natural but Uncomfortable Transition\n\nMenopause marks the end of menstrual periods, and it's formally defined as 12 months after experiencing the last period. Menopause is a natural life transition, but it can come with a list of troubling symptoms that range from mild to severely disruptive. \n \nMenopause symptoms include the famous hot flashes, mood swings, insomnia and fatigue, brain fog, night sweats, anxiety, depression, and even digestive upsets. These and other symptoms, such as libido changes and vaginal dryness, can begin in perimenopause, which are the years leading up to menopause. Some of these symptoms can even continue into postmenopause – the time after menopause occurs. \n \nFor the lucky few, menopause can also occur without any symptoms. But for most women, it disrupts life on multiple levels. Hot flashes and anxiety can disrupt sleep, and hormone fluctuations can cause anxiety and mood changes that affect relationships, work, and daily living. \n\nTreatments for menopause symptoms range from herbal teas and lifestyle changes to medications such as anti-anxiety drugs and hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which can have side effects such as prolonged vaginal bleeding. \n\nBut cannabis in all its forms [may relieve menopause symptoms](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/marijuana-relieves-symptoms-of-menopause) for some women safely, naturally – and effectively.\n\n![Cannabis can be an effective treatment for menopause](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_04_12_at_1_13_46_PM_e9a8cfb524.png)\n \n### Cannabis: A Natural Alternative for Menopause Symptoms\n \nAlthough there's limited research on the [benefits of cannabis for menopause symptoms](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33759668/), a [growing number of women](https://www.chicagotribune.com/marijuana/sns-tft-women-menopause-cannabis-treatment-20201009-oebp6uholnbnvdgjjc4fnol3iy-story.html) are opting for the weed as a safer alternative to potentially risky medications. \n\nThe benefits of cannabis for relieving menopause symptoms arise from the interactions between the hormone estrogen, compounds found in cannabis, and the endocannabinoid system, or ECS. This system is a network of cell receptors that respond both to natural cannabinoid chemicals produced by the body and cannabinoids from cannabis. The endocannabinoid system plays a vital role in [maintaining homeostasis or balance](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/marijuana-cannabinoids-and-homeostasis-a-balancing-act) among many subsystems, including temperature regulation, pain signaling, and mood. \n\n![Cannabis may ease menopause symptoms](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_04_12_at_1_25_31_PM_41b2d48df6.png)\n \nDuring menopause, levels of hormones, including estrogen, can fluctuate dramatically, and some research suggests that these changes can affect the functioning of the endocannabinoid system. Estrogen [helps to regulate](https://www.endocrineweb.com/cannabis-menopause)\n the production of a fatty acid called FAAH (fatty acid amide hydrolase), which breaks down natural cannabinoids. This disruption explains menopause symptoms such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, and hot flashes, as mechanisms for temperature regulation are disrupted. \n \nStandard treatments for menopause symptoms target symptoms, with pain relief, anxiety, or depression medications. Hormone replacement therapy aims to stabilize estrogen levels and maintain them at pre-menopause levels, which staves off symptoms. But estrogen therapy raises the risk of stroke and blood clots, and it isn't recommended for long-term use. \n \nCannabis can't replace lost estrogen or alter the menopause process. But compounds such as THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol) can activate endocannabinoid receptors in subsystems that contribute to menopause symptoms such as mood swings, [hot flashes](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/can-cannabis-help-with-hot-flashes)and [disrupted sleep](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/5-sleep-disorders-cannabis-can-help-alleviate). This is why many people are turning to cannabis for safer, more natural relief without the considerable side effects of hormones or pharmaceuticals.\n \n### The 5 Best Medical Marijuana Products for Menopause Symptoms\n \nIn Illinois, cannabis is [legally available to anyone over 21](https://www.illinoispolicy.org/what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana-legalization-in-illinois/) for both recreational and medical purposes, and the state's many dispensaries carry a variety of premium products for relieving the discomforts of menopause. \n\nHere's a look at five of the best options.\n \n### Black Raspberry Road 1:1 CBN Tincture from Avexia\n\n![1:1 Black Raspberry Road](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_04_12_at_1_20_30_PM_71e763c019.png)\n\nCBN is formed from the breakdown of THC, and this lesser-known cannabis compound has mild sedative effects for better sleep and relief of pain. It's a natural response to uncertainty and unpleasant circumstances. For many people, anxiety passes once the situation causing it resolves. But for others, anxiety becomes a part of daily life. Common anxiety disorders include:\n\n- Generalized anxiety disorder, characterized by persistent, excessive worry and anticipation of disaster or unpleasant outcomes\n- Panic disorder, which consists of sudden and spontaneous attacks of extreme anxiety\n- Social anxiety, is extreme anxiety about being judged or rejected in social situations\n- Phobias, or severe anxiety reactions about specific things or circumstances such as flying, snakes or blood\n- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a constellation of anxiety-related symptoms that arise after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event\n- Depressive disorders \n- Obsessive-compulsive disorder\n\nAnxiety disorders can also occur along with many other health conditions such as ADHD, migraine, chronic pain, and gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn's disease. Anxiety and stress can also affect anyone diagnosed with a serious or chronic condition like heart disease, cancer, or diabetes.\n\nTreatments for anxiety and anxiety disorders range from lifestyle and diet changes to talk therapy and a variety of prescription anti-anxiety and antidepressant medications. But the compounds in cannabis work with the body's systems to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation without the side effects of common medications.\n\n![Untitledval127.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval127_49017f6bf1.png)\n\n### Cannabis Can Relieve Anxiety Naturally\n\nRecreational cannabis users have always enjoyed the relaxation and good mood that comes from smoking weed. This system [supports balance, or homeostasis](https://hellomd.com/articles/marijuana-cannabinoids-and-homeostasis-a-balancing-act), among the body's many subsystems, including pain signaling, mood, and digestion. That's why cannabis can help to [relieve symptoms of anxiety](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-helps-women-cope-with-stress-and-anxiety), promote the production of \"feel good\" chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine, and relieve conditions that lead to anxiety, such as chronic pain. \n\n![iStock-1289597705-min.jpg](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/i_Stock_1289597705_min_5f3b7e1219.jpg)\n\n### Medical Cannabis is Legal in Missouri\n\nCannabis [has been legal in Missouri](https://www.mpp.org/states/missouri/)\n for medical use since 2018, so adults can now visit dispensaries throughout the state with a valid medical marijuana card. You aren’t alone. While experiencing anxiety is a normal part of life, anxiety disorders have now become [the most common form of mental illness](https://adaa.org/about-adaa/press-room/facts-statistics). Affecting over 40 million Americans—that’s 18% of the population, anxiety can make a big impact on an individual's quality of life.\n\n[Anxiety](http://www.webmd.com/anxiety-panic/guide/anxiety-disorders#1) is characterized by feelings of panic, fear, or uneasiness. It can also cause physical symptoms like dizziness, heart palpitations, tingling in the hands and feet, shortness of breath, tense muscles, nausea, and insomnia. These symptoms can be frightening, painful, and even debilitating. That said, many patients say their symptoms have been relieved with the [help of cannabis](https://hellomd.com/questions-and-answers/how-can-cbd-help-me-with-my-anxiety). \n\n![Untitledval111.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval111_cba1e9dd29.png)\n\n### Alex’s Success With Consuming Cannabis to Ease His Anxiety \n\nTake Alex, a 31-year-old designer from the San Francisco Bay Area, who says his anxiety has been greatly helped by cannabis. Alex says that before he started using cannabis during the day, his anxiety was overwhelming.\n\n“Throughout the day, I would just be a wreck,” Alex explains. “I would just worry too much about things that honestly didn't matter or just focus on the negative aspects or actually get flustered and rush because of my anxiety and make things worse.”\n\nAlex had been using cannabis to relax in the evenings for years but worried about how it might affect him during the day. He says things changed when he learned about microdosing.\n\n“Just taking one hit in the morning before I would go into work. ... The difference was night and day,” he says. “I would definitely have a more calm feeling overall. I wouldn't rush things. I wouldn't let the anxiety or the pressures of the stress get to me.”\n\nAlex says that while using these microdosed inhalations of cannabis vapor, he’s able to function much better than he did without cannabis. \n\nThat said, Alex cautions newcomers to “try it out and experiment with it at home, before you use cannabis to curb anxiety at a workplace or even with friends or social situations.” He explains that it’s important to know “what’s going to work for you in terms of dosage, and even how you're going to consume it.”\n\nRELATED: [SPECIFIC CANNABIS STRAINS THAT EASE ANXIETY](https://hellomd.com/articles/specific-cannabis-strains-that-ease-anxiety)\n\n![Untitledval118.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval118_7a6921eb9c.png)\n\n### Cannabis Helps Reduce Anxiety\n\nAlex isn’t alone. Patients often report that [cannabis helps with their anxiety in a number of ways](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55a40a5f66313700063c0000/does-marijuana-ease-anxiety). Marijuana helps with many of the painful symptoms of anxiety by relaxing muscles, easing chronic pain, and reducing nausea.\n\nCannabis can also have a direct effect by lessening the intense feelings of anxiety. [Research shows](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00213-017-4648-z) that when patients are treated with cannabis, not only did their subjective levels of stress decrease but so did biological markers such as cortisol levels. This happens because compounds in the plant, such as [cannabidiol (CBD)](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4604171/), stimulate the endocannabinoid system’s CB1 receptor.\n\nThe [endocannabinoid system (ECS)](https://hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system) naturally regulates anxiety by dampening excitatory signals in the brain. So, when the ECS is stimulated by cannabinoids, it triggers the same natural response. For patients who have an excess of this anxious activity in the brain, cannabis can play an invaluable role in dampening its effects. \n\nThis explains why so many patients say cannabis has helped them take back control of their lives. \n\n![Untitledval119.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval119_09937e2f5d.png)\n\n### Using Cannabis for Anxiety\n\nIf you suffer from anxiety and think cannabis might be right for you, the best first step is to talk to a doctor. You can consult with one of [HelloMD’s knowledgeable doctors](https://www.hellomd.com/); it's easy, private and 100% online. Whether you have a medical marijuana card or live in a state where you can purchase through recreational means, you’ll want to start exploring which strains and methods of using cannabis are best for you.\n\nVaping and smoking are the most common choices for treating anxiety, but many patients have also found success with marijuana edibles and topicals. This [can vary greatly from patient to patient](https://hellomd.com/questions-and-answers/what-is-the-best-way-to-consume-marijuana-to-help-with-anxiety), so some experimentation may be necessary.\n\nThe same is true when it comes to [cannabis strains](https://hellomd.com/articles/top-10-high-cbd-marijuana-strains-for-anxiety). While some say cannabis that’s high in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) helps reduce their anxiety, others say THC actually worsens it. If you’re sensitive to the anxiety-inducing effects of THC, looking for varieties high in CBD or tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) may be a better fit.\n\nThere are many types of cannabis that people find helpful for treating anxiety and its painful symptoms. These reactions begin in our brain as part of our bodies’ wired fear response. When we sense danger, a signal is sent to the amygdala. This almond-shaped cluster of neurons in our forebrains serves as the alert center for our bodies and primes us to either face the threat in front of us or run away from it. \n\nOnce danger subsides, signals to the amygdala relax, and our bodies return to a normal, less-heightened state. While we know a lot about what goes into triggering our fear response, we know a lot less about how to turn it off. And this is important because the inability to turn off inappropriate fear responses is associated with conditions like PTSD, phobias, and other anxiety-related disorders.\n\nThis is where cannabis comes into the picture: It turns out that [cannabidiol](https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/cannabidiol-cbd-what-we-know-and-what-we-dont-2018082414476) (CBD)—and possibly [tetrahydrocannabinol](https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/neuroscience/tetrahydrocannabinol) (THC)—may be able to affect our bodies’ fear response. This makes sense when we think of the anecdotal evidence that exists for cannabis and various mood disorders. This property could have medical applications, and research is already underway to better understand how cannabis’s components can be used to treat [anxiety-related disorders](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/anxiety/symptoms-causes/syc-20350961). \n\n![Untitledval102.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval102_5ec448864c.png)\n\n### The Endocannabinoid System Is Part of Our Fear Response \n\nThose of you familiar with cannabis science know a little about the [endocannabinoid system](https://hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system), the network of receptors located throughout the body that cannabis acts on to bring about its therapeutic effects. \n\nThe endocannabinoid system is made up of receptors, endocannabinoids, and enzymes. In the body, endocannabinoids are made when they’re needed; they attach to receptors, and once they’ve served their purpose, they’re broken down by enzymes. These endocannabinoids are similar to the cannabinoids found in cannabis, like THC. \n\nResearchers think that CB1, one of the receptors in this system, is key to controlling our fear response. In fact, they’ve observed that [mice without CB1 receptors have trouble controlling their fear](http://www.jneurosci.org/content/26/25/6677.full). \n\nStudies have also found that activating this receptor—either naturally via the body’s own cannabinoids or those found in cannabis—is key to turning off the fear response. Normally, [anandamide](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41401-018-0075-x), an endocannabinoid, attaches to CB1. Once it’s served its purpose, it’s broken down by an enzyme known as fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH). \n\nKnowing all of the above, researchers decided to see what would happen if they turned off FAAH. In other words, they prevented FAAH from breaking down anandamide in mice. They found that the [mice recovered from fear faster](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3549323/) and that these actions were traceable all the way back to the amygdala. \n\nAn older study in 2009 by the same researchers could offer more insight on FAAH. In some folks, the FAAH enzyme is more active, and in others, the enzyme is less active. The researchers think that this activity is due to a difference in DNA. In the study, those whose DNA was coded for less active FAAH were able to overcome their fear response [more quickly](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3215587/). \n\nIn other words, because FAAH was less active, there was more anandamide in their system available to attach to CB1 receptors, making it easier for these people to override their fear response—at least in theory. \n\n![Untitledval99.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval99_677b4c22c0.png)\n\n### THC & CBD Also Affect the Fear Response \n\nSo, what does this all have to do with cannabis? Well, as it turns out, THC has a similar structure to anandamide, and it often attaches to the CB1 receptor. \n\nAdditionally, some studies suggest CBD can prevent the FAAH enzyme from breaking down anandamide. Both of these abilities suggest that these cannabis components could help folks whose brains have a hard time shutting down inappropriate fear responses. \n\nThe effects of both THC and CBD on fear response have been studied. So far, research has shown that THC may [encourage the brain](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3445738/) to shut down learned fear responses in humans. And more recent studies in people suggest that [it may make the process of overcoming fear easier](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0006322318309971). \n\nBecause CBD shows a lot of promise in the treatment of anxiety-related disorders, a lot of preclinical research has been done on the topic. Collectively, this research suggests that [CBD can not only help stop the body’s fear response, it can also blunt the overall bodily reaction to fear](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5121237/pdf/fphar-07-00454.pdf) and the way the brain remembers past fear-inducing events. \n\nThese findings make CBD seem like a good additional option to traditional therapies for anxiety-related disorders because it may have lasting positive effects. \n\nSo far, the studies done on THC and CBD are promising, but we still don’t have a full grasp of the mechanism behind these positive outcomes. CB1 and FAAH are likely at play, but there are other parts of the endocannabinoid system that could be responsible as well: A recent study in _Biological Psychiatry_ found that people with PTSD have [elevated levels of 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), another endocannabinoid,](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0006322318301719) in their brains, but their FAAH and anandamide levels were normal. \n\nResults like this highlight how cannabis science is always changing. Overall, it’s obvious that more research is needed. But given that anxiety and anxiety-related disorders are the most common form of mental illness in the U.S., there are many people who can’t afford to wait for that research to be more conclusive. This is why cannabis communities like HelloMD—where people can share their experiences and offer support—are helpful and important. \n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. At high levels, however, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can, for some people, increase anxiety due to its psychoactive qualities. That said, non-psychoactive cannabidiol (CBD) has been shown to [successfully reduce anxiety](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4604171/). \n\nA new study out of Vanderbilt University found that [cannabinoid receptors](http://www.cell.com/neuron/abstract/S0896-62731400017-8) are present in the part of the brain associated with emotion in mice. These receptors, present in the area of the brain that dictates the fight or flight response, are closely linked to anxiety. It’s believed that these receptors are also present in the amygdala of humans, which could explain why medical marijuana is effective at helping people with anxiety. \n\n![Untitled81-min (1).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled81_min_1_e34fa8c865.png)\n\n### CBD Strains Are Most Effective at Reducing Anxiety\n\nA 2011 study published in _Neuropyschopharmacology_ showed that, when it comes to using marijuana for anxiety, [CBD was extremely beneficial for patients with social anxiety disorder](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21307846). The study was conducted with 24 participants diagnosed with social anxiety disorder as well as a control group of 12 people who didn’t have the disorder. Half of the participants with social anxiety disorder were given CBD, while the other half were given a placebo. All of the study participants then had to complete a public speaking test. \n\nPhysiological measures were taken before, during and after the test. The physiological measures, as well as personal surveys taken after the public speaking test, showed a significant decrease in anxiety levels in patients who were administered CBD.\n\nIt turns out [anandamide](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41401-018-0075-x), which is a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps decrease anxiety, stays intact with the introduction of CBD. This is because CBD strains decrease the production of the fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), which naturally degrades anandamide. \n\nRELATED: [WHY DOES CANNABIS MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD?](https://hellomd.com/articles/why-does-cannabis-make-you-feel-good/)\n\n![Untitledval90.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval90_83319d194d.png)\n\n### 10 Best Marijuana Strains for Anxiety\n\nChoosing a strain of medicinal marijuana that helps control your anxiety can involve some testing to find what works best for you. It’s important to choose a strain with adequate levels of CBD in order to control anxiety. CBD levels should be higher than or balanced with THC, which allows for the psychoactive side effects of the THC to be counteracted by the CBD. Here are some of the best high-CBD marijuana strains on the market that can help with anxiety.\n\n![Untitledva2-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledva2_min_5d14d8521a.png)\n\n### 1. Whether it’s chronic anxiety, social anxiety, PTSD or just stress from daily life, many are searching for a safe and accessible option to tame their anxious emotions. \n\nThankfully, [cannabidiol (CBD) can help](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4604171/). This natural cannabinoid is found in the cannabis plant. And while it won’t get you high, it can help calm an anxious mind and body.\n\nCould CBD be the right option for you? Let’s explore this anxiety-reducing alternative to traditional pharmaceuticals. \n\n![Untitledval94.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval94_3a77ffd757.png)\n\n### Understanding Anxiety Disorders\n\n[Anxiety](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/anxiety/symptoms-causes/syc-20350961) is a very real and present issue for many. We all deal with a normal amount of anxiety throughout our lives. But for some, anxiety can become so extreme that it’s detrimental to their ability to function.\n\nMore than 30% of Americans will suffer from an anxiety disorder during their lifetime. And [over 19% of people suffer with one currently](https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/statistics/prevalence/any-anxiety-disorder-among-adults.shtml). \n\nAnxiety disorders comprise a wide range of conditions including :\n\n* Panic disorder\n* Generalized anxiety disorder\n* Agoraphobia\n* Specific phobia\n* Social anxiety disorder\n* PTSD\n* Obsessive-compulsive disorder\n* Separation anxiety disorder \n\nThese conditions differ based on the objects or situations that induce anxiety, but have one feature in common—excessive anxiety, and the physical and behavioral disturbances that go along with it. \n\nAnxiety disorders can be mild or severe, but they all [interfere with daily activities like work, school and relationships](https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/anxiety-disorders/index.shtml#part_145336)—and can cause a variety of side effects. \n\nThose with anxiety may experience:\n\n* Restlessness \n* Fatigue \n* Difficulty concentrating\n* Irritability\n* Muscle tension\n* Uncontrollable feelings of worry\n* Sleep problems \n* Heart palpitations\n* Sweating\n* Trembling or shaking\n* Shortness of breath\n\nRELATED: [HOW CBD CAN RELIEVE SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-cbd-can-relieve-symptoms-of-depression/)\n\nAnxiety disorders are usually treated with a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy or prescriptions like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or benzodiazepine medications. While therapy is usually a helpful option, unfortunately, [many patients have issues with the prescription medications](https://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/drugs-and-treatments/sleeping-pills-and-minor-tranquillisers/side-effects-of-benzodiazepines/). Both medication types can leave patients feeling emotionally numb and can be highly addictive. While they sometimes help at first, patients often adjust and need increasingly higher doses to keep getting the positive effects. \n\n![Untitledval95.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval95_82a8f44010.png)\n\n### CBD Can Help Ease Anxiety \n\nThankfully, CBD can help with anxious situations. The science is still limited due to research restrictions on cannabis. But preliminary data and patient reports suggest big potential for CBD as an [anxiety-reducing alternative](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs13311-015-0387-1) to prescription medications.\n\nScientists have been looking at CBD’s anxiety-reducing potential for a while now, and say that we have good reason to believe [CBD can help](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs13311-015-0387-1). \n\nStudies show that CBD can actively reduce anxiety in humans. One 2011 study demonstrated this by testing subjects’ anxiety (and related factors) during [public speaking](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3079847/). Public speaking is well known as the most common fear in humans—right above death—so it’s a great test for anxiety. \n\nIt turns out CBD made a big impact for those who took it right before speaking in front of audience. Compared to those who took nothing before the speech, those using CBD experienced significantly reduced anxiety as well as less cognitive impairment, discomfort in their speech, and feelings of anticipatory alertness. \nThis confirmed earlier studies, which had found [similar results for both humans](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20829306) and [animals](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23298518). \n\nScientist believe that CBD is so effective at combating anxiety, because of the way it interacts with serotonin receptors in the brain. While the mechanism isn’t fully understood, scientists believe that anxiety and depression may be caused (at least in part) by a [lack of available serotonin](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/7622823/). At the very least, when more serotonin is available, anxiety and depression tend to ease up. \n\nThis is why SSRIs can help reduce depression and anxiety. SSRIs block the reabsorption of serotonin in the brain, making it more available in the synaptic space and boosting serotonin signaling. \n\nCBD has something in common with SSRIs. CBD also [boosts serotonin signaling](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26711860) through enhancing the serotonin receptor 5-HT1A. \n\nIn fact, CBD may have a leg up on SSRIs. Researchers noted that the antidepressant and anti-anxiety effects of CBD work much faster than SSRIs do, because they’re affecting the serotonin more quickly. \n\nAdditionally, [CBD has been rated by the World Health Organization](http://www.who.int/medicines/access/controlled-substances/5.2_CBD.pdf). as safe, generally well-tolerated and without potential for abuse or dependence.\n \nResearch also shows that CBD, like SSRIs, can [help regenerate neurons in the hippocampus](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23298518). This [promotion of neurogenesis](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3648779/) is important as evidence suggests that impaired neuronal plasticity may be a contributor to [suicidal behavior](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3022308/). \n\n![Untitledval96.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval96_e9ac685ab0.png)\n\n### Tips for Taking CBD to Help Ease Anxiety\n\nThinking about taking CBD for your own anxiety? There are a few things to consider. \n\nFirst, when it comes to consumption method, there are some great options to choose from. [Vaporizers](https://hellomd.com/tag/vaporizer/) and [sublingual options](https://hellomd.com/tag/tincture/) work great when you need anxiety relief quickly. These rapid-onset options will start working within minutes and stay with you for a few hours, making them perfect for when you need immediate relief. \n\n[Edibles](https://hellomd.com/articles/essentials-about-edibles-that-you-need-to-know) can also be very helpful for managing anxiety. This option stays in your system longer, but will take an hour or two to start working. For this reason, edibles are better suited for pre-emptively maintaining a sense of calm on a daily basis than they are for reducing anxiety when it hits. \n\nFinding a method may be easy, but when it comes to dosing, things can get complicated. “I think one of the hardest thing for people is going to be finding the perfect dose,” explains Jessica Tonani, co-founder of [Basic Jane, the only cannabis company in the U.S. that holds a license to research CBD](https://basicjane.com). “There is a bit of a Goldilocks scenario going on here, where low levels and high levels of CBD show no efficacy, but the mid-dose is perfect,” Jessica says.\n\nIn other words, when it comes to anxiety, CBD is dose-dependent. Research shows that too little or too much CBD doesn’t help, but something in the middle works well. \n\nFor example, in a 2018 study replicating the previous research on [anxiety levels during public speaking](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30328956), researchers found that 150 mg and 600 mg doses of CBD were ineffective at reducing anxiety compared to the placebo. But 300 mg doses lowered anxiety significantly. \n\nStill, it’s important to note 300 mg is a very high dose when compared to the average dose in CBD products, so folks may need relatively high doses to achieve anxiety relief. The ideal dose can vary from person to person, so to find the best CBD dose for you, start low and slowly increase your dose each time you use it until you’ve found a helpful amount for your needs. \n\nA final piece of advice is to check with your doctor before you begin a CBD regimen. “CBD can affect the metabolism of other drugs, and so it might mean you have to modify the amount of other medications you take,” cautions Jessica. “This is something you can work with your physician on.”\n\nIf you have questions about CBD, [ask them](https://hellomd.com/questions-and-answers/) and our community will answer.\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,/9j/2wBDABALDA4MChAODQ4SERATGCgaGBYWGDEjJR0oOjM9PDkzODdASFxOQERXRTc4UG1RV19iZ2hnPk1xeXBkeFxlZ2P/2wBDARESEhgVGC8aGi9jQjhCY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2P/wgARCAAOABQDASIAAhEBAxEB/8QAGAAAAgMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYBAwX/xAAWAQEBAQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABAAL/2gAMAwEAAhADEAAAAdO5bnKzC4N//8QAGhAAAwADAQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAECAwQRIf/aAAgBAQABBQLFfSn70xtk25HsWf/EABURAQEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR/9oACAEDAQE/AYj/xAAVEQEBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEf/aAAgBAgEBPwGq/8QAGRAAAgMBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEQETFx/9oACAEBAAY/An0UaVbZp//EABcQAQEBAQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAERACH/2gAIAQEAAT8hITkdh1TEbrCWmCzP/9oADAMBAAIAAwAAABB/z//EABQRAQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABD/2gAIAQMBAT8QD//EABQRAQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABD/2gAIAQIBAT8QD//EABoQAQADAQEBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEAESExYdH/2gAIAQEAAT8QXUJ8QUjm35kobMvB2nrLI9SLtvX2UdY9J//Z","aspectRatio":1.3793103448275863,"src":"/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/14b42/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.jpg","srcSet":"/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/f836f/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.jpg 200w,\n/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/2244e/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.jpg 400w,\n/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/14b42/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.jpg 800w,\n/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/47498/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.jpg 1200w,\n/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/0e329/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.jpg 1600w,\n/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/db203/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.jpg 3642w","srcWebp":"/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/58556/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/61e93/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.webp 200w,\n/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/1f5c5/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.webp 400w,\n/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/58556/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.webp 800w,\n/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/99238/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.webp 1200w,\n/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/7c22d/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.webp 1600w,\n/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/62b7a/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.webp 3642w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3537-markdown","title":"Specific Cannabis Strains That Ease Anxiety ","slug":"specific-cannabis-strains-that-ease-anxiety","content":"Suffering from anxiety? It’s not just you. It’s a stressful world out there, and many find themselves overwhelmed by intense feelings of anxiety along with anxiety’s uncomfortable and sometimes debilitating symptoms. \n\nThankfully, [cannabis can help ease anxiety](https://www.uniad.org.br/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Cannabis_and_anxiety.pdf) and restore functionality for those struggling with this common disorder. Unfortunately, [cannabis can also worsen or induce anxiety](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33008420/) if used incorrectly. While researchers studying cannabis have found some promising results for treating anxiety, few have looked at which strains of cannabis may be best suited to this task. \n\nThat said, a recent study is beginning to change the current landscape—by identifying specific strains that best reduce anxiety. \n\n![Untitledval92.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval92_b5db8317b9.png)\n\n### Cannabis for Anxiety \n\nAnxiety is a common condition, and it’s one of the [most frequent reasons why people take cannabis](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/da.22664). Anxiety can seriously impact your life with its array of [negative effects](http://www.webmd.com/anxiety-panic/guide/anxiety-disorders#1) such as:\n\n* Feelings of panic, fear, or uneasiness\n* Dizziness\n* Heart palpitations\n* Difficulty thinking or focusing\n* Tingling in hands and feet\n* Shortness of breath\n* Tense muscles \n* Nausea \n* Insomnia\n\nBut cannabis offers some hope to this stressful picture. Research suggests that cannabis can effectively relieve anxiety. In fact, studies have shown that taking cannabis not only reduces subjective reports of anxiety, it also [reduces the biological indicators of stress](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00213-017-4648-z) like the chemical cortisol. \n\nRELATED: [MOVE OVER ANTI-ANXIETY DRUGS, CANNABIS CAN HELP](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a35c820100a820006562f27/move-over-anti-anxiety-drugs-cannabis-can-help)\n\nUnfortunately, studies also show that [cannabis can also worsen anxiety](https://academic.oup.com/ijnp/article/16/10/2273/653108). For example, some studies looking at cannabis and anxiety have found a dose-dependent relationship. Too much or too little of cannabis’s active ingredients, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or cannabidiol (CBD), and marijuana can go from improving anxiety to worsening it. \n\nTo make matters more confusing, there’s an incredible amount of variety in the cannabis plant. Depending on the strain of cannabis and its chemical composition, you may find very different effects. According to patients’ subjective reports, some strains are better at relieving anxiety than others are. \n\nSo we know that the dose and chemical composition of a specific cannabis strain may be of incredible importance when treating anxiety. Still, no scientific studies have looked into what chemical profiles may be most effective—until now. \n\n![Untitledval91.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval91_3fec0ee90e.png)\n\n### Searching for Strains That Relieve Anxiety \n\nFrom a scientific perspective, we know very little about which strains work best for anxiety. But researchers from [Whistler Therapeutics in British Columbia](https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnins.2018.00730/full) are starting to change all that. \n\nThese innovative scientists are side-stepping the question of whether cannabis in general works for anxiety and searching for a specific anti-anxiety cannabis chemotype instead. Their study was small and had considerable limitations, but it’s a great start at trying to identify specific strains. Hopefully, this will pave the way for more studies that delve into this complicated issue. \n\nResearchers on this project worked exclusively with a particular dispensary so that they could survey patients about specific strains. They then used the lab test results from these strains to compare against the responses to the chemical profiles. \n\nFirst, they collected survey information on the 442 patients participating in the study. Patients reported the most and least effective strains for reducing anxiety (from the limited collection that was available at the dispensary). Then they rated the efficacy of each using a scale of 1–10. Using statistical analysis on all of the answers, the researchers accumulated a list of the most and least effective strains for treating anxiety. \n\nThen researchers compared this list to results of two independent sets of lab tests, showing the chemical composition of each cannabis strain. The analysis showed some interesting patterns that may be useful in determining a chemical profile that’s best suited to relieving anxiety. \n\n![Untitledval93.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval93_ac57b64c9d.png)\n\n### Best & Worst Marijuana Strains for Anxiety \n\nSo, which strains work best for anxiety? The results of the study suggested a few promising strains. The **top-rated cannabis strains** were:\n\n* [Bubba Kush](https://hellomd.com/strains/bubba-kush)\n* [Skywalker OG Kush](https://hellomd.com/strains/skywalker-og)\n* [Blueberry Lambsbread](https://www.leafly.com/strains/blueberry-lambsbread)\n* [Kosher Kush](https://hellomd.com/strains/kosher-kush)\n\nThe researchers noted that this shows a strong patient preference for [Kush varieties of cannabis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kush_(cannabis)) when it comes to treating anxiety. Three of the four top-rated cannabis strains contained genetics from this class of landrace strain originally found in the Kush mountain range of Central Asia. \n\nThe three Kush strains also shared a similar chemotype with high levels of trans-nerolidol, b-caryophyllene, and D-limonene. From a statistical point of view, the most strongly correlated chemical components of these strains that worked best were high THC and high trans-nerolidol. \n\nThe **strains rated as least effective in combating anxiety** were:\n\n* [Chocolope](https://hellomd.com/strains/chocolope) \n* [Blueberry Lambsbread](https://www.leafly.com/strains/blueberry-lambsbread)\n* [CBD Shark](https://hellomd.com/strains/cbd-shark)\n* [Tangerine Dream](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tangerine_Dream)\n\nWhen it comes to ineffective chemical profiles, researchers are looking at the terpene terpinolene. This terpene was dominant in Chocolope, which was rated least effective by far. So researchers suspect terpinolene may account for this strain’s poor effect on anxiety. \n\nGuaiol was another correlated terpene. It was the only “perfect” correlation found in three of the four least effective strains but none of the most effective marijuana strains. Still, it was found in very small amounts, so the authors aren’t sure if it’s just a marker attached to ineffective chemotypes or if it has its own anxiety-causing effects, which are significant enough to cause anxiety even at small amounts. \n\nOther terpenes like eucalyptol, g-terpinene, a-phellandrene, 3-carene, and sabinene hydrate are in similar territory. While significantly correlated with decreased anti-anxiety effects, these were present in such small amounts that it’s not clear how they’re playing into the overall effect.\n\nThese discoveries point the way to strains that may be helpful in treating anxiety. And for those seeking anxiety relief, Kush strains that are high in trans-nerolidol may be a great place to start. \n\nIt's also important to take these results with a grain of salt. Surveys on medical treatments aren’t always reliable, especially with a small pool of respondents (You may have noticed that the marijuana strain Blueberry Lambsbread showed up on both the best and worst list, for example).\n\nIn addition, bear in mind that only a small subset of marijuana strains were tested, so there may be others out there that are even more effective. Double-blind studies with placebos are the next step towards showing the efficacy of particular strains. But studies like this one are a great first step—pointing towards the cannabis strains that we should study in more depth. \n\nFinally, it's important to remember that everyone’s different, and your genetics play a role in how the different types of cannabis affect you. Everywhere we turn, there's another paradigm-shifting event requiring new levels of emotional resilience. From the COVID pandemic to intense economic pressures and an upcoming political election, it's a delicate balance to manage our emotional and physical wellbeing.\n\nThese back-to-back events can affect the way you are dealing with anxiety and how much rest may be able to get. If chronic pain is an issue, the levels of stress and cortisol in your system may be triggering flare-ups. Fortunately, cannabis is known to treat various symptoms, whether they be physical, emotional, or psychological. \n\nIncorporating marijuana into your lifestyle has several benefits, whether it's THC or CBD. These powerful cannabinoids are often used as an alternative or complementary treatment for various conditions such as [anxiety](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4604171/), insomnia and chronic pain.\n\n![Untitledval99.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval99_677b4c22c0.png)\n\n### THC & CBD\n\n[Tetrahydrocannabinol](https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/neuroscience/tetrahydrocannabinol) (THC) is commonly known for its psychotropic effects which lead to the feeling of being \"high.\" THC is also linked to improved mood, decreased feelings of stress, and significant pain relief for many people. Recent studies, including the one conducted by [HelloMD and UC Berkeley](https://hellomd.com/blogs/articles/hellomd-and-uc-berkeley-release-study-on-cannabis-use-as-a-substitute-for-opioid-and-non-opioid-based-pain-medication), indicate that cannabis with THC offers better pain relief than traditional pharmaceuticals.\n\n[Cannabidiol](https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/cannabidiol-cbd-what-we-know-and-what-we-dont-2018082414476) (CBD) interacts with the [endocannabinoid system](https://hellomd.com/blogs/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system?_pos=1&_sid=412fbfff4&_ss=r) in a similar way to THC, without the intoxicating effects. CBD is best known for its therapeutic qualities for quelling anxiety, as well as providing pain relief. Studies have shown that it may help reduce seizures related to epilepsy, inflammatory bowel disease/irritable bowel syndrome, and depression. CBD can also be helpful when it comes to inflammation, stress, and sleep problems. \n\nThose are just a few of the leading reasons people consume cannabis. Below we dive into how cannabis can help with symptom relief for chronic pain, anxiety, and insomnia.\n\n![Untitledval97.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval97_60116a8aa4.png)\n\n### Anxiety\n\nIn studies, CBD has shown promise in the [treatment of anxiety disorders](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s13311-015-0387-1?handl_url=https://successtms.com/blog/new-treatments-for-depression) such as generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. [CBD activates and enhances specific serotonin receptors](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/7622823/) in the brain leading to reduced feelings of anxiety and stress. For some, CBD may be able to replace or augment traditional pharmaceuticals consumed for acute anxiety.\n\nCBD is also known to [reduce feelings of anxiety following a stressful event](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2697769/), such as public speaking. Other lifestyle practices to consider for anxiety reduction are meditation and breathwork. Regularly practicing mindfulness meditation and breathwork, such as box breathing, have shown to have a positive effect on reducing anxiety and stress levels. \n\nTHC can also be useful for reducing anxiety, but lower doses are more effective at helping with symptoms. High doses of THC for some people may exacerbate existing feelings anxiety and stress. Remarkably, CBD is an antidote to THC-induced anxiety or paranoia. If you happen to overindulge with THC, try ingesting CBD to counteract the negative effects you may feel from being to \"high.\"\n\nWe suggest if you're trying THC for the first time, start at a very low dose of 1-2mg for an edible, or an equally balanced strain of THC to CBD, if vaping or smoking. \n\n![Untitledval98.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval98_072b56c36f.png)\n\n### Chronic Pain\n\nConsuming cannabis is a more natural way to [deal with chronic pain.](https://hellomd.com/blogs/articles/8-natural-ways-to-combat-chronic-pain) Marijuana with THC, CBD, or a combination of both, is consumed commonly by: \n\n- Smoking flower or vaping\n- Orally via gel caps\n- Sublingually via a tincture\n- Applied topically directly to the area of discomfort\n- \nThough the cannabinoids CBD and THC can be used independently, there is evidence suggesting that [CBD may enhance THC's pain-relieving properties](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19896326/). CBD may be most effective when it comes to treating neuropathic pain, which is often related to inflammation. People seek out cannabis to treat symptoms for common ailments such as migraines/headaches, muscle cramping and fibromyalgia. Other conditions that may respond well to the pain-relieving properties within cannabis are arthritis or autoimmune diseases such as Crohn's. \n\nIt's suggested that THC may help modulate pain by indirectly [increasing opioid receptor activation](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4201274/). A recent study found that high-[THC cannabis could offer better pain relief](https://www.analyticalcannabis.com/articles/high-thc-cannabis-offers-better-pain-relief-than-opioids-study-finds-311862) than opioids and could be up to twenty times more effective. Conclusion: this is great news for anyone struggling to find an effective way to cope with chronic pain instead of opiates, which can be highly addictive. \n\n![Untitledval100.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval100_dd0a4c606c.png)\n\n### Insomnia\n\nIf you have problems falling or staying asleep, you understand how an inadequate slumber negatively impacts daily life. In many instances, insomnia is related to poor sleep habits such as irregular sleep times, mood disorders like depression or anxiety, lack of exercise, chronic illness, or even certain medications. \n\nThough CBD is known to help with some of the common causes which could lead to insomnia, it may not always be the best choice. Studies have shown that a potential side effect of too much CBD is that it may create a state of wakefulness. Studies indicate that smaller amounts of THC may actually help restore your body's natural cycle [by inducing sleep](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15118485). For the right person, THC can help you to fall asleep and stay asleep.\n\nIf trying THC for sleep, look for Indica-dominant strains, which will help the body relax. Edibles are a great choice for sleep in that they last anywhere from 4-6 hours.\n\n![Untitledval101.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval101_4e7fb3376c.png)\n\n### What's Best for You\n\nOf course, as with all treatments, it's important to educate yourself on what works best for you. [Understanding dosage](https://hellomd.com/blogs/questions-answers/the-right-dosage-of-cbd?_pos=2&_sid=39ccab7e0&_ss=r), your preferred method of consumption or application, and your specific reason for including THC or CBD in your health and wellness routine is necessary to have the best results. \n\nTaking a slow and steady approach to exploring how cannabis fits into your life will help you tailor your experience. It may also prevent you from wasting time and money on cannabis products that may not be suitable for you. It's true that experimenting with cannabis requires a measure of patience to find the right solution. Stay focused on your goals while trying various options whether it be for chronic pain, anxiety, or a better night's sleep. \n\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.5037593984962405,"src":"/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/ee604/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.png","srcSet":"/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/69585/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.png 200w,\n/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/497c6/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.png 400w,\n/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/ee604/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.png 800w,\n/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/f3583/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.png 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/58556/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/61e93/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.webp 200w,\n/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/1f5c5/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.webp 400w,\n/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/58556/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.webp 800w,\n/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/99238/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3888-markdown","title":"The Top 5 Medical Marijuana Products for Anxiety in Louisiana ","slug":"the-top-5-medical-marijuana-products-for-anxiety-in-louisiana","content":"If you struggle with anxiety, you're not alone. Every day seems to bring new reports about the abundant therapeutic benefits of psilocybin — reports often generated by respected research institutions, such as [Johns Hopkins](https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/psychiatry/research/psychedelics-research.html) and the [Imperial College London](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/psychedelic-research-centre/). It's time to start paying attention to psilocybin and how it may disrupt our mental healthcare system.\n\n### What is Psilocybin?\n\n![Untitled45-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled45_min_f93a11a214.png)\n\nPsilocybin, also known as [magic mushrooms](https://www.drugs.com/illicit/psilocybin.html), is a chemical compound found within certain mushrooms. It is also one of the most well-known plant-based psychedelic drugs. When psilocybin is consumed, it turns into psilocin, which has psychoactive properties which result in a psychedelic experience for the consumer. \n\nMore than 180 mushrooms contain this compound, with [psilocybe cubensis](https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psilocybe_cubensis) being probably the most well-known. In fresh or dried form, the mushrooms are usually mixed into food or brewed into tea, although some research labs process the mushrooms to precisely measure the psilocybin dosage.\n\n### What are the Effects of Psilocybin?\n\n![Psilocybin can cause hallucinations](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_02_14_at_1_36_40_PM_ba92eae610.png)\n\nThe word \"psychedelic\" is commonly associated with changes in perception and an altered state of consciousness. Consumers report generally enhanced sensory experiences, including visual halos and geometric patterns, time dilation, and a physical sense of relaxation. \n\n[Synesthesia](https://www.webmd.com/brain/what-is-synesthesia#:~:text=Synesthesia%20is%20when%20you%20hear,street%22%20and%20taste%20citrus%20fruit.) is also commonly reported. This experience is a blending of sense experiences so that music may appear visual or physical sensations are felt as sounds. \n\nMost importantly, however, psilocybin generates powerful emotional and psychological experiences. These tend to be strongly positive, often described as euphoria, wonder, or delight, and most people also describe feeling a new sense of [connection with the universe, or even God](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6478303/).\n\n### What are the Therapeutic Benefits of Psilocybin?\n\n![Medical labs are studying the effects of psilocybin on mental health and more](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_02_14_at_1_33_42_PM_fbe99427b8.png)\n\nThe emotionally uplifting experience brought about by psilocybin has many applications for mental and physical health. It has also been demonstrated to effectively treat [depression](https://psychedelicstoday.com/2019/11/13/psilocybin-depression/), [PTSD](https://med.nyu.edu/departments-institutes/population-health/divisions-sections-centers/medical-ethics/education/high-school-bioethics-project/learning-scenarios/ptsd-treatment-psychedelics), [anxiety](https://thethirdwave.co/psychedelics/shrooms/), [headaches](https://maps.org/news/media/5967-new-york-magazine-psychedelic-mushrooms-cured-my-cluster-headaches), and [spiritual alienation](https://maps.org/news/media/2619-hopkins-researchers-study-therapeutic-use-of-psilocybin-in-magic-mushr). \n\n![Psilocybin is being used to treat depression and PTSD ](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_02_14_at_1_34_08_PM_56451fbfc8.png)\n\nIn September 2019, [Johns Hopkins University](https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/psychiatry/research/psychedelics-research.html#:~:text=In%20a%20small%20study%20of,and%20half%20of%20study%20participants) announced the launch of its Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research. It is pursuing psilocybin-based treatments for depression, addiction, PTSD, Alzheimers, and chronic Lyme Disease. In late January 2020, [Dr. Stephen Ross](https://nyulangone.org/doctors/1083825590/stephen-ross), associate professor of psychiatry in the [Department of Psychiatry at NYU Langone Health](https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/28/health/magic-mushrooms-psilocybin-cancer-patients-study-wellness/index.html), reported findings that \"strongly suggest that psilocybin therapy is a promising means of improving the emotional, psychological, and spiritual well-being of patients with life-threatening cancer.\"\n\n![Psilocybin has many positive effects and some people feel more connected to themselves and the universe](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_02_14_at_1_40_03_PM_b462733990.png)\n\n### Are there any Risks Associated with Psilocybin?\n\nWhile medical science has not identified any long-term adverse effects, some people experience nausea, confusion, fear, or other negative emotions while under the influence of psilocybin. \n\nHowever, these negative experiences are often eased or go away when there is clinical assistance, or a psychedelic guide present, to help the consumer through their psychedelic journey. According to the [University of Maryland Center for Substance Abuse Research](https://cesar.umd.edu/), there is no evidence that psilocybin is physically or psychologically addictive.\n\n![Psilocybin is not yet legal in the States but is decriminalized in some counties](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_02_14_at_1_41_10_PM_3c18f9c817.png)\n\n### Is Psilocybin Legal?\nYes and no; Like marijuana, psilocybin is illegal at the federal level in the U.S., classified as a [Schedule 1 substance under the Controlled Substances Act](https://www.dea.gov/drug-information/drug-scheduling#:~:text=Schedule%20I%20drugs%2C%20substances%2C%20or,)%2C%20methaqualone%2C%20and%20peyote.). \nHowever, some local jurisdictions are passing laws for the decriminalization of psilocybin, and research institutions can obtain legal waivers. In 2019, Denver and Oakland decriminalized psychedelic plant-based substances, including psilocybin. \n\n[Legalization measures](https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2019/05/mushroom-law/589192/) are expected to be brought before the legislatures in California and Oregon in 2020. In Brazil, Jamaica, The Netherlands, and Vietnam, psilocybin use is entirely legal.\n\n![Untitled48-min (1).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled48_min_1_b2277d3a13.png)\n\n### Are there any Drug Interactions with Psilocybin?\n\nThe most important safety consideration when taking psychedelic mushrooms is to make sure that whoever harvested the mushrooms is an expert in making the correct identification. Some non-psychedelic types of mushrooms look similar and can be toxic. It is also wise to [avoid mixing psychoactive drugs](https://adf.org.au/drug-facts/psilocybin/) in general. For that reason, you should avoid using psilocybin with other drugs such as ice, speed, or ecstasy. Similarly, you should not use psychedelic mushrooms if you take psychiatric medication.\n\n### Where Can I Legally Seek Psilocybin Treatment?\n\n![Untitled47-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled47_min_3873062f74.png)\n\nCurrently, it is not legal to seek [psilocybin-assisted therapy](https://hellomd.com/articles/the-healing-powers-of-psychedelic-therapy) in the United States, although this may be changing as soon as 2023. Psilocybin is entirely legal in the Netherlands, and retreat centers welcome guests from all over the world. You can also look online to find psychedelic retreat centers, and many are located in Jamaica. \n\n### Get Your Medical Document & Purchase Medical Cannabis\n\nIt's easy to get your medical document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://hellomd.com/get-started). It’s no longer stigmatized to struggle with mental health. But many of the medications that society has normalized have anything but “normal” side effects. From [drowsiness to fatigue to slowing mental functionality](https://www.helpguide.org/articles/anxiety/anxiety-medication.htm) anxiety meds aren’t always the safest option. \n\nIt’s worth considering a healthier alternative - like cannabis - to help with anxiety. \n\n### How Can Cannabis Cure Anxiety?\n\nThe [National Institute on Drug Addiction](https://www.nih.gov/about-nih/what-we-do/nih-almanac/national-institute-drug-abuse-nida) posted a [study](https://archives.drugabuse.gov/testimonies/2015/biology-potential-therapeutic-effects-cannabidiol) that found “CBD reduced anxiety in patients with social anxiety subjected to a stressful public speaking task.” \n\nThis comes as no surprise since Cannabidiol (CBD) is a potent anxiolytic and is very effective in reducing anxiety and the frequency of panic attacks. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can also reduce anxiety at low doses.\n\nThere is a clear link between CBD and reduced anxiety. Oftentimes, if you walk into a dispensary and ask for products to treat your anxiety they will almost always recommend some form of CBD. \n\nKeep in mind, high doses of THC can actually increase anxiety levels, it’s best to start slow with a product that contains much more CBD than THC.\n\n### The Best Marijuana Products for Anxiety in Illinois\n\nIt’s not always easy to pick the perfect product for your anxiety. You should always consult medical practitioners, dispensary pharmacists, or budtenders for advice and recommendations for weed products that best fit your body’s needs. \n\nSome people prefer fast-acting tinctures, while others enjoy long-lasting edibles. The best ways to find out are through research, gathered insight, and experimentation with low doses. \n\nLet’s walk through some options - in various consumption methods - of marijuana products for anxiety in Illinois. \n\n### Chill Tins\n\n![Untitled13.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled13_0d935ad796.png)\n\n[1906’s Chill Tins](https://www.verilife.com/il/menu/verilife-schaumburg-il) are drops for relaxation and solace.
