But anecdotal evidence wasn’t enough. “I’m a 100% scientist at heart. As Kersten was doing formulations, I was saying, ‘Show me how this works.’” \n\nWhat started as an impulse to help Jessica’s mother transformed into a business manufacturing a variety of topical CBD products.\n\nInitially, Jessica and Kersten used a blend of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and CBD in their topicals. “We started with a combination and did studies using products with and without THC. Then we conducted dosing studies. We eliminated the THC from the topicals and discovered, to my surprise, that the omission of THC didn’t decrease the pain relief. We found we didn’t need THC.”\n\n### How Does CBD Reduce Inflammation? \n\n“There are a lot of different scientific theories on how CBD works,” says Jessica. In lay people’s terms, CBD appears to decrease inflammatory signals. Studies show that cannabis disrupts signaling proteins called cytokines, which are part of the body’s inflammatory process. \n\n“Cytokines are molecules that tell your body you need to fix something, which leads to inflammation and damage in certain ways. CBD decreases these inflammatory signals,” she continues.\n\n“We also discovered that along with decreasing inflammation, CBD decreases the anxiety around that inflammation. CBD tells your body that it can relax, reducing the anxiety associated with having pain.” Jessica’s research has led her to conclude that topical applications of CBD are the best way to maximize its anti-inflammatory qualities.\n\n### How Do I Use CBD to Reduce My Inflammatory Condition? \n\nIf you decide to try CBD topicals to tackle pain and inflammation, Jessica recommends applying your CBD topical every four hours, or as needed. Since hemp-derived CBD products are non-psychoactive, there isn’t a concern about getting high while using them.\n\n“We’ve found that repeated applications help keep inflammation down. Some use our products morning and night. What led you to start Basic Jane?\n\n**Jessica Tonani:** The idea for Basic Jane topicals was founded in 2014 when my co-founder Kersten was approached by her 80-year-old mother who was devastated to learn she could no longer take her anti-inflammatory medications for the painful arthritis in her knees, hands and the degenerative disks in her back. As a nurse, she had to find a way to help. I was a little skeptical about whether we’d be able to help, but our research was a success. \n\nA few months later, Basic Jane’s first Relieve formula was developed in 2014. Relieve was formally introduced to the public in 2017 after years of research and development. \n\n### Your product line focuses on topicals, all with hemp-derived CBD. What’s the science behind CBD working in our bodies?\n\n**JT:** This is a great question and an emerging area of research. The question of how CBD works in the body is a complicated question to answer, because CBD doesn’t do just one thing in the body. We know that CBD interacts with a number of different receptors in the body including GPR18, GPR55, GPR 119, 5HT1A and TRPV2. Using CBD for pain relief has been researched since the 1970s, but it wasn’t until the early 2000s that research began to explore the use of CBD for topical and transdermal systems of pain relief.\n\nResearch has shown several ways CBD leads to pain relief in the body including using the adenosine pathway. But the complete mechanism is still being discovered. We continue to perform research ourselves and collaborate with other researchers to determine how CBD works in the body. \n\n### Why did Basic Jane choose to use hemp-derived CBD vs. CBD from cannabis marijuana or even a THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) topical?\n\n**JT:** The CBD molecule derived from any cannabis plant, hemp or marijuana, is exactly the same molecule. Hemp plants simply don’t produce high levels of THC. \nAt Basic Jane, our goal is to build effective pain relief products. We began our research to find the perfect pain relief formulation by exploring multiple compounds from cannabis. The data led us to CBD. We found people had the greatest pain relief with products containing CBD. \n\nIt was a natural transition for us to move to _Cannabis sativa_ plants with less than 0.3% THC—hemp—to manufacture our products. Hemp is legally used to produce topical products, food supplements, textiles and an endless supply of other products. This is the reason why we use hemp plants. Hemp plants allow us to create products to address everyday aches and pains that are easily accessible to everyone.  \n### Anecdotally speaking, why are topicals being used by people for aches and pains?\n\n**JT:** People are using Basic Jane products for aches and pains because they’re experiencing relief. We hear from a broad spectrum of people using the products ranging in age from young athletes to 103-year-olds. Our customers tell us that people like the idea of being able to target pain relief with a topical without taking a pill. What do you like to highlight about the cannabis plant that you use and the overall line-up of ingredients?\n\n**JT:** Studying the genomes of cannabis allows us to begin to understand how and why the plant produces different cannabinoids. For example, the genetics of a plant will dictate if a cannabis plant is a hemp plant (produces less than 0.3% THC) or marijuana.\n\nWe’re very interested in researching molecules like THCV, CBG and CBC. We hope that by understanding the genetics of cannabis, we’ll be able to expand our products beyond CBD to other molecules—such as CBDV, THCV and so on—which may have equal or better pain relief properties in the future. \n\n### Why do you have different kinds of topicals? Are they used for different reasons?\n\n**JT:** We know people have different needs, and so we’ve built products to address those differences.
