I must admit, at first, I wasn’t a fan. If you have naturally oily skin like me, the thought of putting more oil on your face gives you nightmares about the skin issues you thought you’d left behind in high school. \n\nBut even if your skin is on the oily side, a good face oil can lock in moisture, which is particularly important during winter, and if you’re regularly exposed to sun and wind. It’s not the same kind of oil that clogs your pores. So if you use the right carrier oil for your skin, it won’t make you break out.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nA great way to get even more bang for your buck when it comes to a rehydrating oil is to add some hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) oil. CBD has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties so can help with red, dry and acne-prone skin. \n\n### Choose the Elements of Your CBD Face Oil Wisely\n\nBefore we get to the recipe, let’s talk ingredients. There are several ways to customize your CBD face oil to fit your skin’s needs, so you should consider all of the various options for each element of the oil:\n\n* **Carrier oil:** The carrier oil forms the base of your CBD face oil and will make up the bulk of your final product. You’ll want to choose an oil that targets your skin concerns. Some options are:\n\n * Coconut oil, which is a good choice if you have dry skin. \n * Caster oil is a great carrier oil if you’ve got acne-prone skin. \n * Argon oil not only moisturizes, but also provides sun protection. \n * Olive oil locks in moisture and has antioxidant properties. \n\n* **CBD oil:** There are lots of CBD oils out there. First things first, make sure your CBD oil comes from hemp organically grown in either North America or Europe. Any oil with untraceable origins may be full of pesticides and other harmful ingredients that could wreak havoc on your skin. If you have particularly sensitive skin, choose a pure CBD oil without any added fragrances or essential oils.\n\nRELATED: [WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR WHEN BUYING HEMP CBD OIL](https://hellomd.com/articles/what-to-watch-out-for-when-buying-hemp-cbd-oil/)\n\n* **Essential oils:** Speaking of essential oils, they’re something you can add to your CBD face oil for their pleasing aromas as well as some health-boosting effects. These health benefits are thanks to their terpenes. [Terpenes are oils secreted by a plant’s glands](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a99e9f4f24d1300077ccb6f/cannabis-terpenes-pack-a-therapeutic-punch), and are responsible for their smell and taste. They also have wellness benefits of their own and by including them, you can amplify the benefits of your CBD oil. \n\n * Citrus essential oils contain the terpene [limonene](https://hellomd.com/articles/know-your-cannabis-terpenes-limonene/). Limonene will make your CBD oil smell fresh and fruity, and it will also boost the oil’s antibacterial properties. Limonene also has mood-boosting properties too, so your CBD oil can help put a smile on your face while it nourishes.\n * Lavender essential oils feature the terpene [linalool](https://hellomd.com/articles/know-your-cannabis-terpenes-linalool/). Linalool is a calming terpene, which can help with anxiety or even poor sleep. There’s a reason why so many products formulated to help people calm down and unwind smell like lavender. A CBD face oil with lavender would be a great option if you want to include your CBD face oil in your nighttime skin care routine as you get ready for bed.\n * An essential oil with the aroma of pine is full of the terpene [pinene](https://hellomd.com/articles/know-your-terpenes-pinene/). Pinene not only smells fresh, but it’s also been shown to have anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving and antiviral properties. If you suffer from cold sores, pinene is the terpene to add to your CBD oil. \n\n### How to Make Your Rehydrating CBD-Infused Face Oil\n\n1. You’ll need a dropper bottle or another kind of small bottle with a regular or spray top. Try to use a glass bottle as this is not only more environmentally friendly than a plastic one is, but it will protect the ingredients better, too. A funnel will also be handy, but isn’t required. \n2. Take 2.5 oz of your carrier oil and pour it into your bottle. \n3. Add a few drops of your essential oil. Mix and smell to see if the aroma is strong enough for your liking. Add any extra drops slowly, smelling often. You could go up to as many as 25 drops.\n4. Next it’s time to add the CBD oil. You can adjust this as needed, but around 1/4 oz is a good amount.\n5. Mix well and shake before each use. \n\nPhoto credit: [Kristin Vogt](https://www.pexels.com/@kristingroth2)\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3888888888888888,"src":"/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/14b42/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.jpg","srcSet":"/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/f836f/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.jpg 200w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/2244e/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.jpg 400w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/14b42/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.jpg 800w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/47498/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.jpg 1200w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/0e329/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.jpg 1600w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/43576/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.jpg 3653w","srcWebp":"/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/58556/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/61e93/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.webp 200w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/1f5c5/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.webp 400w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/58556/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.webp 800w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/99238/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.webp 1200w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/7c22d/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.webp 1600w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/35449/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.webp 3653w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2832-markdown","title":"DIY Recipe: Korean-Style CBD Brightening Face Mask","slug":"diy-recipe-korean-style-cbd-brightening-face-mask","content":"Take a look down the beauty aisles of your local drug store or department store, and you’ll see a plethora of Korean beauty products from moisturizes to serums to toners. \n\nThe K-Beauty (Korean Beauty) phenomenon is somewhat new to the United States, but the Korean beauty industry has been developing cutting-edge, skin-perfecting products for decades. \n\nWhere the United States’ beauty industry traditionally focuses on make-up to cover up imperfections, Korean beauty focuses on treating the underlying issues so cosmetic cover-ups are no longer necessary. In Korea, healthy, supple, dewy, well-hydrated skin is the standard. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nSure, you can buy these K-Beauty products or you can make one right in the comfort of your own home. Why not start off with a nourishing face mask?\n\nWhen you make a face mask at home, you have the freedom to add whatever you want, including antioxidant-rich, inflammation-reducing, hemp cannabidiol (CBD) oil. Korean beauty treatments typically use plant extracts and other natural ingredients to promote healthy skin, so adding hemp CBD to the mix seems only natural. \n\n### Discover the Beneficial Ingredients in This Hemp CBD Mask \n\nTo brighten and purify your skin, this recipe combines the power of:\n\n* Yogurt\n* Honey\n* Turmeric\n* Hemp-derived CBD\n* Essential oils \n\nThe yogurt helps brighten the skin by getting rid of surface skin cells that have seen better days. Honey and CBD purify the skin with their powerful antibacterial properties, while also calming inflammation and locking in moisture.\n\nAnd turmeric helps even skin tone, working wonders for hyperpigmentation. Hemp CBD is also full of antioxidants, even more powerful than vitamins C and E, both widely used in anti-aging skin care products. \n\nTry the mask on mornings after a night of drinking or bad sleep, when skin tends to be dull and dehydrated. It can also make a difference in your skin’s overall appearance if you’ve had a few days of where you’ve skipped your vegetables and instead indulged in some greasier food options. \n\nThis mask is intended to be gentle, so that it can be used multiple times a week without causing any irritation. \n\nRELATED: [DIY RECIPE: MOISTURIZING CBD LIP BALM](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5ba4779728d6e8000971f816/diy-recipe-moisturizing-cbd-lip-balm) \n\n### Ingredients for the Korean-Style CBD Brightening & Purifying Face Mask\n\n* 1 tbsp plain yogurt\n* 1 tbsp honey (Manuka preferred, but not required) \n* 1 tbsp turmeric powder\n* 1/2 dropper full of your favorite hemp-derived CBD oil. If you ask Claudia Mata, she’d say, “Yes.” And she’s loving every minute of it.\n\nTwo years ago, Claudia and her native Californian husband Zander Gladish co-founded [Vertly](https://www.hellomd.com/brands/5ba2a8ecac31ed429cd6395e/vertly), a luxury cannabis topicals brand that focuses on “clean beauty” and uses only the best-quality, hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) in its lotion and lip balm formulations. Vertly has risen above, in a field of new CBD topicals, many of which don’t hold the same high standards for quality as Vertly does. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nClaudia states that “our goal in creating Vertly was to merge the natural healing properties of CBD with a line of plant-based, clean beauty products.” Vertly topicals focus on using “organically grown, hemp-derived, full-spectrum phytocannabinoids. Our products include an array of nourishing plant butters and slow-infused herbal oils, with each ingredient selected for its therapeutic benefits for the mind and body.”\n\nHelloMD sat down with Claudia (pictured below with Zander) to find out more about her family’s roots in cannabis farming; Claudia’s transition from New York fashion editorial to the California cannabis industry; and why Vertly uses hemp-derived CBD in its topicals. \n\n![Claudia Mata & Zander Gladish of Vertly](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-eb2d6910-c53f-4e54-996e-e7bf8a667e8c/original.png)\n\n### Before co-founding Vertly, your background included being a high-powered fashion editor in New York City, most recently with W magazine. You left that all behind to move to the West Coast and get into the cannabis industry. How has your transition been from the high-heeled New York fashion world to NorCal cannabis? \n\n**Claudia Mata:** My husband Zander grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, so moving back seemed like a natural fit, especially after starting a family. We'd been living in New York for 15 years, and at the time we decided to leave, I was pregnant with our second baby. Marin County is stunning, and the lifestyle is so unique, we already knew that we wanted to raise a family here, even though we started having children in New York City.\n\nGoing from the fashion world into the cannabis industry doesn't seem like the most obvious transition. But Zander, who’s also my co-founder, has a family history in cannabis farming. His brother has his own cannabis farm, so this has always been a dinner topic for us. Conversations about starting Vertly came up naturally, especially as cannabis has become legal. Our family began talking about the implications of legalization and what an exciting time it is to land in this industry.\n\n### Vertly focuses on the hemp CBD topicals market, with your Relief Lotion, Body Lotion and Luscious Lip Butter. How did you make the decision to create these specific types of products? \n\n![Vertly Relief Lotion](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-76aea8de-4200-408d-afc2-fc240c223238/original.png)\n\n**CM:** When I started to look at getting into the cannabis industry, I was always looking for cannabis-based products that catered to someone like me and what my interests were. At the time, there seemed to be very few products that I was attracted to or that focused on clean beauty. So, I thought it would be interesting to merge luxurious, clean beauty products with cannabis. And that's how it came about. \n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS HEMP: THE NEW HOT BEAUTY ITEM](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5744aa24091a95000800011a/cannabis-hemp-the-new-hot-beauty-item)\n\n### How did the fashion world prepare you in any way for being in the cannabis industry?\n\n**CM:** Sometimes people think of those in the fashion industry as being flighty and superficial. And this is sometimes true, but not always. I will say for the fashion industry, that it’s a very competitive and interesting field to work within. Obviously, you not only need to be stylish and interested in that sort of thing, but you need to have excellent diplomacy skills at all levels, managing a variety of personalities, as you can imagine.\n\nI feel like it was great preparation for coming into the cannabis industry, because I became capable of dealing with all kinds of scenarios and also of pushing the envelope, seeing what I could do and needing to be extremely creative and jumping all in. It helped me to become fearless.\n\n### You’ve mentioned clean beauty, and you put a lot of emphasis on the overall quality of your products. How did this philosophy inform the creation of your hemp CBD beauty products? \n\n**CM:** I think of the creation and consumption of clean beauty products as similar to what happened with the food revolution. People over time have become aware and educated about how their food is being grown and what it actually does within your body.\n\nTo a lot of people, it was not so clear that beauty products have a similar effect to what you put into your body. Most beauty products are used externally and are absorbed through your skin, and your skin is the largest organ in your body. What you put on your body should have as much emphasis as what you put within your body.\n\nWhen I was pregnant with my first child, I took such great care with everything that I was doing. New mothers often will do that, hyper-naturally. You want everything that you expose your unborn child to be pure and clean and wonderful.\n\nThis just made me more aware of certain details within my own beauty routine that I wasn't really aware of before. For instance, I started to think about preservatives. There are ways to use organic oils to preserve your ingredients, rather than more toxic substances. I found cleaner ways to preserve beauty products that are actually good for your skin and your health, and gentler on the body in every way. I became obsessive about reading labels, and I still do that.\n\n### You mentioned that herbalism informed your formulation of Vertly products as well?\n\n**CM:** Yes, that’s true. Before my first pregnancy, I used to use a very expensive night cream all of the time, because I loved it. When I became more educated, I looked at the ingredients, and I was shocked. Many ingredients were horrible for your body. So, I started to really focus on the idea of clean, organic ingredients. When I finally moved to California, I started studying herbalism and how this might support our product development. \n\n### Why have you made hemp-derived CBD a cornerstone of the Vertly product line?\n\n**CM:** When I first started to use CBD within beauty, I saw the positive impact it might have within the industry and the consumers who use skincare products. Now that more studies are being done on the efficacy and positive therapeutic benefits of CBD, the more I think brands will incorporate it into their products. It’s also important to note that hemp-derived CBD is completely non-psychoactive.\n\nYou hear lot about it, and it’s kind of a fad, but I do think that if given the opportunity, it's something that will stand the test of time. CBD is an excellent anti-inflammatory for instance, and that’s positive for most skin types across the board.\n\nCBD’s also good for acne, can help stimulate a more youthful appearance and is really great for bodily aches and pains, like lower back pain. It’s full of antioxidants and simultaneously can help with dry skin, eczema and even sunburns. CBD is an element that people will gain more understanding about and see that it's a natural plant-based element. \n\n### How much do you miss New York, and would you ever move back?\n\n**CM:** No, I don't think so. I'm really enjoying the Californian lifestyle, and what I’m doing within the cannabis industry. Also, where we live in Marin County, it's just so beautiful. Blair applies the same principles to Verte Essentials, which comprises premium hemp-based topicals, edibles, bath soaks and suppositories.\n\nWith 500 hours of RYT (registered yoga teacher) Ashtanga/Sadhana training under her belt, Blair also applies a holistic philosophy to Verte Essentials. All of her products are carefully developed using the purest botanical and herbal extracts harvested from organic farms. In addition, Verte sources its hemp extracts from certified organic, sustainable farms in Europe.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nHelloMD spoke with Blair to learn more about what motivated her to start Verte Essentials and hear more about the products she’s created to address issues like skin inflammation and muscle fatigue. \n\n### Why did you launch Verte Essentials, which focuses on the beauty sector?\n\n**Blair Lauren Brown:** We are a beauty brand first and foremost. We decided to go that route, because we realized that there's a large segment within this marketplace that we could tap into with hemp-derived CBD (cannabidiol). At the time we conceived of Verte Essentials, there really wasn’t anything of quality that we saw within the marketplace. We saw an opportunity to provide access to CBD topicals focused on the wellness and beauty aspect.\n\nWe launched with beauty topicals, such as our facial crème Rose de Soie and our Esprit de Rose facial mist, knowing that we could work into the edible market. Our philosophy is that beauty is inside and out, but it starts from within. Every solution within our product line is meant to create beauty on the inside, but will also show on the outside.\n\nWhen you look at a Verte Essentials product, it feels beautiful on the skin; it smells beautiful; it looks beautiful as a package on your shelf; and overall it makes you feel fabulous. \n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS HEMP: THE NEW HOT BEAUTY ITEM](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5744aa24091a95000800011a/cannabis-hemp-the-new-hot-beauty-item)\n\n### What different types of beauty products do you create?\n\n**BLB:** The base ingredient in all of our products is CBD derived from high-quality hemp. CBD is now well known for reducing body inflammation, and it’s also excellent at reducing skin inflammation. As a brand within the beauty industry, we’re largely addressing anti-aging, topical skin inflammation of all different kinds and helping decrease redness and promote even skin tone. Our end goal has always been to create a skin care line that addresses those issues successfully. \n\nBeyond reducing skin inflammation, our product line includes everything from a face lotion, Rose de Soie, that’s soothing and has other efficacious ingredients like cell peptides, which help increase collagen production.\n\nWe also have our Micellar H2O Facial Pads, which act as an exfoliant as well as a deep cleanser. We offer facial skin oils in a variety of experiences as well as facial and skin mists. For people using our H2O pads, we’ve seen a reduction in acne and other breakouts. We also offer oil-based topicals that may be used like a serum, and those come in a variety of different experiences. \n\nWe also developed our Luxe Soaks, based on the philosophy of Japanese baths in mind, which are meant to address deep muscle fatigue. Our soak includes CBD, but are also Epsom salt, which has high levels of magnesium. We also have added Himalayan sea salt, which is wonderful as a mineral addition to your skin and emptier to your bloodstream. This—plus a whole host of other botanicals and essential oils—is relaxing and calming to the body. \n\n### Do you include terpene profiles in your hemp-based products? \n\n**BLB:** Absolutely. Terpenes, I think are one of the opportunities that we've taken advantage of that we're not seeing anywhere else in the marketplace. Terpenes are amazing oils that all plants and all plant matter contain. Terpenes and flavonoids also help create the overall experience. We talk about terpenes within cannabis marijuana, but they also exist within the cannabis hemp plant, where we get our CBD.\n\nTerpenes create different experiences, such as when you smell mint or a lemon peel or lavender. Terpenes are what are responsible for that incredible aromatherapy experience. At Verte Essentials, we're taking terpenes from within a whole-plant spectrum and combining them with other beneficial aspects for multi-plant synergy. \n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS TERPENES PACK A THERAPEUTIC PUNCH](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a99e9f4f24d1300077ccb6f/cannabis-terpenes-pack-a-therapeutic-punch)\n\n### How did you end up in the beauty industry making products from hemp-derived CBD?\n\n**BLB:** My brother and I have decided to do this together. My brother has run an organic cannabis farm for many years in both California and Oregon. I came to him two years ago with a realization that there was an untapped marketplace and that we had the opportunity to share our breadth of knowledge across a diversity of different industries.\n\nWe decided at that point to get into cannabis products, and I started testing and playing with the formulations from my alchemist background. After testing formulations, we saw that CBD was all we needed to be able to create the products that we were interested in. It had everything that we wanted, right there in front of us.\n\nWe actually saw THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) as an inhibitor for market entry. CBD derived from hemp was far more approachable with all of the benefits and provided a better comfort level for those new to CBD.\n\n### Any advice to those consumers who are new to hemp-derived CBD? How should they proceed in choosing a product that’s both safe and has efficacy?\n\n**BLB:** My advice always is to trust your gut. I also believe that a consumer should look for the most natural product out there. Look at the ingredients really thoroughly for clarity in origin and production. \n\nLike anything you put in or on your body, such as a beauty topical, it’s absolutely imperative that these things are natural, because they—like anything else—can be afflicted by GMO (genetically modified organisms), and bad soil, improper fertilization and pesticides. The consumer needs to be aware that not all CBD is of high quality.\n\nAt Verte Essentials, we strive to offer the highest quality and most natural ingredients for the best overall experience both inside and out.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.36986301369863,"src":"/static/a495f3b5d6d4e0bfcf654526913291ce/14b42/69733d3e16fc62497ca5fa00edb78f82.jpg","srcSet":"/static/a495f3b5d6d4e0bfcf654526913291ce/f836f/69733d3e16fc62497ca5fa00edb78f82.jpg 200w,\n/static/a495f3b5d6d4e0bfcf654526913291ce/2244e/69733d3e16fc62497ca5fa00edb78f82.jpg 400w,\n/static/a495f3b5d6d4e0bfcf654526913291ce/14b42/69733d3e16fc62497ca5fa00edb78f82.jpg 800w,\n/static/a495f3b5d6d4e0bfcf654526913291ce/a1fc1/69733d3e16fc62497ca5fa00edb78f82.jpg 921w","srcWebp":"/static/a495f3b5d6d4e0bfcf654526913291ce/58556/69733d3e16fc62497ca5fa00edb78f82.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/a495f3b5d6d4e0bfcf654526913291ce/61e93/69733d3e16fc62497ca5fa00edb78f82.webp 200w,\n/static/a495f3b5d6d4e0bfcf654526913291ce/1f5c5/69733d3e16fc62497ca5fa00edb78f82.webp 400w,\n/static/a495f3b5d6d4e0bfcf654526913291ce/58556/69733d3e16fc62497ca5fa00edb78f82.webp 800w,\n/static/a495f3b5d6d4e0bfcf654526913291ce/147d5/69733d3e16fc62497ca5fa00edb78f82.webp 921w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2370-markdown","title":"Marijuana Has a New Starring Role in Beauty Products","slug":"marijuana-has-a-new-starring-role-in-beauty-products","content":"Chefs and foodies are finding new ways to enjoy cannabis in the culinary world, designers are artfully weaving it into fashion, the wellness industry has merged cannabis into yoga classes, and now marijuana is finding yet another way to make its mark on another industry — within the beauty industry. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Marijuana Moves Into Beauty\n\nItems like bath bombs, bath salts, facial oils, lotions, lip balms — to name just a few — are now finding a place among the world of bath and beauty products. In states like Colorado, cosmetic and wellness businesses are finding ways to bring cannabis into their services by offering massages with infused oils and facials using hemp seed oil to their customers. Other brands like Los Angeles-based company Lord Jones have been catapulted into the mainstream by celebrity stylists like Karla Welch who has used their [CBD-infused cream on her clients](http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/magazine-feature/7662282/cannabis-beauty-products-red-carpet) during the Golden Globes to help with aching feet from wearing heels.\n\nThough there’s some confusion about whether or not you can get high from applying marijuana-infused topicals, people can rest assure that there will be no psychoactive affects.\n\nRELATED:[5 Ways to Use Cannabis for Summer Skincare](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/57b73a13066417000be2b2db/5-ways-to-use-cannabis-for-summer-skincare)\n\n### Cannabis Works Internally and Externally\n\nHemp seed oil, THC and CBD are all components being included in beauty products that are helping to broaden people’s understanding of just how many ways cannabis can be useful. Most people are familiar with the effects of THC and CBD when it’s being consumed orally during smoking, vaping or eating edibles. The two primary compounds can relax the muscles, help reduce body pain, revive an ailing appetite and even help you get a good night’s sleep. Yet when used externally, those three compounds have properties that can help hydrate the skin, prevent or reduce wrinkles when used in facial oils and lotions as well as ease uncomfortable pain and get rid of tension in the body in topicals, bath bombs and massage oils.\n\n### The Cannabis Home Spa\n\nEven if you don’t make it onto the red carpet or live in a state where you can conveniently go to a spa that offer cannabis-infused services, you can still get a taste of what it’s like to get the canna-beauty treatment. Just like stay-cations, you can also reimagine a spa experience in your home with some products you may be able to find at your local dispensary and even some you can try to DIY at home.\n\nLight some candles, find something comfortable to wear and start planning how you incorporate some of these products into a luxurious day of pampering and self-care. \n\n### Facial Masks\n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/59b87cdfd5d69e1783948b21/embedded_images/59b87e75d5d69e14f0948b53/Screen_Shot_2017-09-12_at_5.38.10_PM.png) \n\nYou can buy or DIY a cannabis-infused facial mask that can help soften and brighten your skin. If you’re making it at home, you can use infused olive or coconut oil combined with other ingredients that are good for your skin like honey, yogurt or even avocado. Try looking up some recipes for your specific skin type for the best results. \n\nVideo: [RELAX WITH A WEED FACIAL](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5H4PwCtbj4)\n\n### Face Oils\n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/59b87cdfd5d69e1783948b21/embedded_images/59b8801e8d45171628753606/hemp.jpg)\n\nThe Pure offers a hemp based facial oil. \n\nLook for a facial moisturizer made with hemp seed oil to nourish your skin after washing and exfoliating your face. It’s chock full of essential fatty acids that will help you look refreshed, tighten loose fine lines and wrinkles, and make your skin look more plump. If you’re prone to oily skin, try using a smaller amount to keep your skin from looking greasy.\n\n### Topicals \n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/59b87cdfd5d69e1783948b21/embedded_images/59b87e76d5d69e14f0948b54/Screen_Shot_2017-09-12_at_5.39.51_PM.png) \n\nTopicals can come in a number of forms including creams, oils or salves. They are excellent for pain, sore muscles, stiffness and tenderness which make them a natural follow-up to a nice, long bath to really get your body into some deep relaxation. Try massaging some into tense shoulders, achy calves or the soles of your feet.\n\n### Bath Bombs\n\nThere are companies that offer bath bombs in a range of pretty colors that you can choose from or you can make your own at home using an infused oil of your choice (almond, coconut, olive, etc) or tincture. Just find a bath bomb recipe (like [this one](http://popsci.com/how-to-make-your-own-bath-bombs)) and replace the regular oil base with the same amount of infused oil. \n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Some well known cannabis companies, like [Marley Natural](https://www.marleynatural.com), have even created topical product lines that can be sold outside of the purview of dispensaries. \n\n[![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/58ffb1b9324210003b61806f/embedded_images/58ffb1ba324210003b618070/Screen_Shot_2017-04-25_at_1.22.17_PM.png)](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/58e7c12a64027c0032663bbe/marijuana-belongs-on-your-face)\n[Aunt Zelda's](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/58e7c12a64027c0032663bbe/marijuana-belongs-on-your-face) is a product one of our HelloMD staff uses on her face and swear by.\n\nRELATED: [MARIJUANA BELONGS ON YOUR FACE](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/58e7c12a64027c0032663bbe/marijuana-belongs-on-your-face)\n\nMarley Natural produces a variety of cannabis products, including oil for vaporizers, pre-rolled joints, and whole flower cannabis products. Marley Natural, however, has also curated a skincare line made completely with hemp seed oil, so it can be sold outside of dispensary walls. The specially formulated skin care line includes soaps, lip balms, and various lotions, which are all full with hemp oil filled with omega 3s, omega 6s, vitamin E, and other compounds that keep skin in balance. \n\n### Beauty Products in Dispensaries\n\nBeauty products are even now popping up on dispensary shelves too, which often utilize CBD and may offer some medicinal value. These topical beauty products can help with issues such as inflammation or pain and they are a rising luxury trend, especially in high-end dispensaries. Often these dispensaries resemble a cross between an Apple store and an art gallery. \n\nAn example of a line of high-end beauty products infused with cannabis is the recently released line [Whoopi & Maya](http://whoopiandmaya.com). The collection, which is particularly designed for women during menstruation, was created by actor and cannabis advocate Whoopi Goldberg in collaboration with Maya Elisabeth, the founder of Om edibles. The topical line features luxurious products including a lavender bath soak and a body balm that ease discomfort associated with menstruation. \n\nCannabis’ presence in mainstream beauty products continues to help break down its stigma as a harmful drug. Hemp is a great way to introduce many skeptical people to cannabis, because the benefits of the plant can be separated from its ability to produce psychoactive side effects. The increasing amount of products shows cannabis’ growing appeal among the public because people are more open and willing to reach for these new beauty products that feature hemp leaves front and center on the packaging. \n\n### The Medical Community Says...\n\nThough the formal dermatologist community has not embraced cannabis yet, it may be soon on its way. Tamás Bíró, PhD, director of the immunology department at the University of Debrecen in Hungary has done research on the potential of cannabis at targeting the endocannabinoid system in and through the skin. He says, “the skin barrier, which is very important for moisture retention, sebum production, and sweat-gland function, as well as skincentric sensory functions such as pain and itch. But perhaps most important, it appears that the endocannabinoid system controls skin inflammation—so if an inflammatory or irritation challenge assaults the skin, the endocannabinoid system fights against it.” \n\n[A study recently conducted by Bíró](http://www.elle.com/beauty/a42274/higher-power-marijuana-beauty-products/) found that applying CBD to human skin cells prevented inflammation, showing great potential for its application as a topical anti-inflammatory. This study only further supports the large amounts of success that medical marijuana topicals have provided many people, including fighting against various pain and skin conditions. \n\nEventually, the mainstream dermatological community will start to take notice the positive results that cannabis topicals provide. [Dr. Adam Friedman](http://www.elle.com/beauty/a42274/higher-power-marijuana-beauty-products/), an associate professor of dermatology believes that the dermatology tide may turn in favor of cannabis soon, “I think that's going to change. Given that there is a wide array of skin conditions notorious for chronic inflammation and debilitating itch or pain, there are numerous potential applications. There's going to be an exponential increase in the attention paid to this in the derm world.” \n\nSimilar to issues cannabis faces in many other mainstream medical practices, concerns about questions like dosage and access to particular products will need to be addressed. As more research comes to the fore, clinicians may start to pay attention to the anecdotal stories brought to them by their patients. Eventually, the great potential for cannabis to be incorporated into both everyday beauty and medical dermatological products cannot be ignored.\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Hemp seed oil, unlike cannabis oil, is legal across the United States. Though hemp is a variety of the cannabis sativa plant, it doesn't contain high levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). In fact, hemp contains less than 0.3% THC, so it doesn't have the same psychoactive qualities as the variety of marijuana that you typically think of.\n\nHemp does, however, still contain high levels of other cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol (CBD), and it’s rich in a number of vitamins and minerals. Hemp is often used for more industrial purposes, such as making fabrics. And its oil, which also contains an optimal balance of omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids, has become a hot commodity in beauty products.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### What the Studies Show About Cannabis & Skin Care\n\nA Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology study showed that cannabinoids are responsible for lipid production: “Our preclinical data encourage one to explore whether endocannabinoid system-acting agents can be exploited in the management of common skin disorders,” said Tamás Biró, a scientist who worked on the study. “It is also suggested that these agents can be efficiently applied locally to the skin in the form of a cream.”\n\nThis study gives a nod to the idea that hemp seed or cannabis oil could be especially beneficial in regulating dry skin and other conditions such as acne. Hemp seed oil is also full of alpha-linolenic acid, which has anti-inflammatory properties. These anti-inflammatory properties make hemp seed oil helpful for easing everything from rashes to sunburns. \n\n### Hemp Seed Oil for Sunburn, Anti-Aging & Skin Repair\n\nPamela Hadfield, the co-founder of HelloMD, has found that applying hemp seed oil to a sunburn can make it almost disappear by the next day. And it makes for a great moisturizer as well. Hemp seed oil’s healing properties help rebuild and refresh damaged skin. The oil is said to resemble the protein found in human blood, making it very compatible with the body’s natural process of reparation. Hemp seed oil has a smooth application and absorbs quickly, making it ideal for daily cleansing and moisturizing. \n\nHemp seed oil is also rich in vitamins A and E; it’s also filled with minerals such as potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc, calcium and phosphorous. All of these nutrients, along with its high levels of antioxidants help slow and prevent cell damage, giving hemp seed oil its powerful anti-aging properties.\n\nThese findings have led to a new boom in the world of hemp seed oil cosmetics. One particular brand, Carun, focuses on various hemp items from food to skin care products. According to Dr. Alexis Granite, Carun’s dermatologist consultant, to the _Daily Mail_, “Active cannabinoids, such as those found in the Carun product range, have shown promise in improving a variety of skin conditions, including acne and eczema. Cannabinoids are powerful antioxidants that may work by reducing inflammation and especially when combined with hydrating oils may help in maintaining the skin's natural barrier function.”\n\n### Cannabis & Beauty: A Growing Trend\n\nRecently, beauty destinations such as _Elle_ and _The Coveteur_ have published articles about cannabis beauty products listing myriad hemp products ranging from pure hemp seed oil to lipstick and perfume. All of the buzz around hemp seed oil products is just another step towards gaining a wider understanding of the positive uses of cannabis sativa, including its THC-forward cousin. \n\nPhoto credit: [The Amazings](https://www.flickr.com/photos/theamazingsuk/)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56201c206430320006bb0000/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post.
