As one of New York’s approved methods of ingestion, vaping can provide quick-acting, discreet relief for a number of ailments. But where oral methods like tinctures and capsules have an established medical history dating back centuries, the vaporizer is a recently invented form of administration that patients may be unfamiliar with.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### A Fresh Take on an Old(ish) Concept\n\nThe original idea for the vaporizer is attributed to a “smokeless non-tobacco cigarette” patent filed by Herbert Gilbert in 1963. The invention was intended as a safe form of smoking the uses heated, moist air or warm medication instead of burning tobacco and paper. But despite Gilbert’s successfully receiving the patent in 1965, his invention did not come into fruition due to smoking’s enduring popularity at the time. In 2003, inspired by his own smoking habit, pharmacist and inventor Hon Lik filed a patent for the modern electronic cigarette, in effect taking over where Gilbert’s invention left off and creating a new industry in the process. \n\nVaporizers work either through the placing of plant materials or extract onto a heated surface (conducive heating), or when air heated by inhalation or a fan comes into contact with the concentrate (convection heating). These heating processes extract the cannabinoids and terpenes, warming the material just enough to turn it into vapor but not enough to combust. By contrast, smoking combusts the material, resulting in potentially harmful toxins and carcinogens that the smoker also inhales. \n\nRELATED: [5 WAYS OTHER THAN SMOKING TO CONSUME MARIJUANA](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/596d1b982c7b4b3e1c2e81fc/5-ways-other-than-smoking-flower-to-consume-marijuana)\n\nDespite the growing popularity of vaping, patients exploring medical cannabis for the first time may only be familiar with smoking. “You do not have to smoke the cannabis,” explains [Anna Poulin]( https://www.hellomd.com/people/annapoulin), Manager of Physician and Patient Outreach with PharmaCannis. “In New York, the approved routes of administration of cannabis are vaping, oromucosal or sublingual administration or capsules for oral administration. Smoking as a method of administration of medical cannabis is expressly prohibited in New York State.”\n\n### Who Benefits Most from Vaping\n\nWhile vaping is solidifying its place in pop culture as a smoking alternative, it is still a new technology, and therefore it can be difficult for patients to know if vaping is their best method for ingesting cannabis. \n\n“The ideal candidates for vaping are folks who, if we’re focusing on chronic pain, have sharp shooting pains that they need instant relief from,” says Nelson Cuevas, General Manager and Head Pharmacist at PharmaCannis. This is because, as with smoking cannabis, patients can feel the effects very quickly. Adds Cuevas, “It’s a 90-second onset.”\n\nFor patients managing nausea or loss of appetite, vaping may be even more effective even the oldest known form of cannabis ingestion. “Vaping helps better than the tincture,” explains Cuevas. “For patients with nausea, anything that has any type of bitter taste or anything that they have to ingest…it helps them eventually, but they have to get past that first time drinking the medication.” \n\nA patient who is unable to eat may have better luck inhaling from a vaporizer, allowing the effects of the cannabis to curb his or her nausea, and even make them hungry. “The quick onset of the vape triggers your appetite,” Cuevas continues, “kind of like the munchies when you’re smoking regular flower.”\n\nVaping also appeals to patients who need something portable in order to administer their medicine when needed throughout the day, and its resulting vapor is much more discrete than telltale cannabis smoke. It’s a versatile option that patients can easily adjust to suit their needs, even down to changing the cartridge in order to experience the effects of different strains. \n\n“Tinctures and capsules aren’t yet strain specific like this,” Cuevas explains. “Indica is more for relaxing, the sativa will give folks energy to get through their day, and hybrid is a mix of both.” Patients understand their own circumstances better than anyone; it’s important to inform your healthcare provider of your needs around taking medicine throughout the day so that the right strain is recommended. \n\n“If patients want pain relief and they’re still working, they don’t want to have that tired feeling, they’ll tend to get the sativa,” he says. “Others resting at home, they’ll just want to relax so they’ll get the indica.” This variety allows patients to easily swap out the strain in response to their environment and circumstances, using just one tool and a few cartridges. Cuevas agrees, “It’s very individualized, picking the right formula for themselves.”\n\n### Drawbacks to Vaping\n\n“The only drawback is that the effects from vaping only lasts an hour or two,” says Cuevas, which may not be long enough for sufferers of chronic pain. But in the event that a patient needs something longer lasting, vaping may be a great companion for other types of administration whose effects last for several hours. “What we recommend is a two-pronged effect”, he explains. “They’ll have the tincture as a baseline so they’ll have significant relief throughout the day, but then they’ll have the breakthrough pain that’s normal for people with chronic pain, and that’s when they can use a vape.”\n\nAnother drawback is the newness of vaping itself, particularly with regard to the safety of vaping cannabis compared with smoking it. While the harmful of effects of smoking cigarettes is documented, and people understand that smoking anything can negatively affect the lungs, the long-term effects of smoking cannabis have not been clearly defined yet. Likewise, while there are many who claim that vaping is safer for the lungs than smoking, the jury is still out on how the lungs could be affected by vaping long term. \n\nPharmaCannis offers high-THC vape oils in 3 different formulas:\n\n>* Sativa: energy, uplift \n>* Indica: relaxation\n>* Hybrid: combination relaxation and uplift\n\nVapes have been adopted quickly into our culture and have ushered in a new way for patients to manage their symptoms, allowing them to take their medicine discretely while also customizing its effects. \n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. But this variety can be confusing for some, particularly for those new to medical cannabis. In this article, we take a closer look at tinctures, considered the first form of cannabis to enter Western medicine.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en) \n\nSo, what’s a tincture? Defined as “a solution of a medicinal substance in an alcoholic solvent”, high-proof alcohol is used to essentially break down the plant matter and its chemicals, resulting in a liquid medicine (aka tincture) that can be taken orally. \n\n### Cannabis Tinctures Trace Back Almost 200 Years\n\nTinctures may not receive the fanfare that edibles and flowers do, but before prohibition it was the primary form of cannabis medicine. Its roots in Western medicine trace back to Irish doctor WB O’Shaughnessy, who witnessed cannabis’s use in India and subsequently wrote about hemp tincture in a report published in 1839. When O’Shaughnessy returned to England in 1842, he brought cannabis with him to educate pharmacists and doctors about its healing properties, exposing the Western world to the plant in the process.\n\nRELATED:[HOW TO GET YOUR MEDICAL CARD IN NEW YORK STATE](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/59683dbc1ebad11ae965b491/how-to-get-your-medical-marijuana-card-in-new-york-state)\n\nSoon after, doctors were prescribing it to patients everywhere—Queen Victoria herself was reportedly prescribed cannabis for relief from the pain of menstrual cramps—and by 1850 cannabis was listed in the United States Pharmacopeia as a treatment for a range of ailments including tetanus, alcoholism, opiate addiction, rabies and much more.\n\nTinctures would gradually become less fashionable with the increasing usage of opiates and the introduction of the syringe in the late 19th century, but it was the onset of prohibition in 1937 that took cannabis tinctures out of the mainstream and away from medicine cabinets. Still, the tincture persisted as a viable option for medical cannabis patients, enduring even as new and more innovative methods of ingestion continue to emerge.\n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/598c7958c760c43045c3375c/embedded_images/598c7ec012f4432d21adf9da/Screen_Shot_2017-08-10_at_8.40.33_AM.png)\nTinctures are often appealing to novice users of cannabis.\n \n### Who Benefits Most from Taking a Cannabis Tincture?\n\nCertified medical cannabis patients in New York have access to multiple options for [administering their medicine](http://www.pharmacannis.com/ny/how-to-use-medical-marijuana), either by inhalation through vaporizer and inhalers, or by oral methods in the forms of capsules, oils, oromucosal sprays or tinctures. But if each of these administrations is effective, how does a certified healthcare provider know what to recommend to their patient?\n\n“Tinctures are very appealing for novice users of cannabis,” says Nelson Cuevas, general manager and pharmacist at PharmaCannis. “One of the main reasons is because we can really find out the exact dosing for the patient. We can tweak it—give a little more, a little less—to get the maximum amount of relief for the patient.”\n\nThe ability to adjust the amount of liquid is beneficial to newer patients getting used to medical cannabis. While a certified provider may provide dosage recommendations, no two patients react to cannabis in the same way. Anything from the method of consumption to the patient’s biochemistry to their mindset can impact the effect. As Nelson explains, “It’s a little easier to titrate to the exact dose when you’re using a liquid over a pill.”\n\nAnother appealing feature for patients is that tinctures are flexible enough to be taken in two different ways: sublingually, which is when you place drops of liquid under the tongue and allow it to dissolve through a process called osmosis, or by mixing it into a beverage and drinking it.\n\nOf course, the amount of time it takes for the medicine to kick in differs slightly between these two methods. “If you put it under the tongue, you’ll get a quicker onset,” Nelson explains. “You’ll start feeling the effects in about 15 to 30 minutes. When ingesting it [by mixing the medicine into a beverage], the onset will take about 30 minutes.” \n\nPatients using oral methods of ingestion should anticipate feeling the effects for several hours, and the way a cannabis tincture is administered can also influence the amount of time the patient feels its effects. “The duration of action changes when they use it sublingually,” he continues. “The duration of action is about four to five hours when they use it sublingually as opposed to ingesting it, which will last about six to eight hours.”\n\n### What Are the Advantages of Cannabis Tinctures?\n\nAside from a tincture’s flexibility and its appeal to cannabis newbies, patients also appreciate that it’s easy to accurately measure the dosage every time by simply using a dropper. It’s a discrete means of taking cannabis since there’s no telltale odor, with the added benefit of eliminating the impact on the lungs that comes with smoking.\n\nA tincture is portable enough to be carried anywhere, and while a patient can choose to ingest a tincture in a beverage, digestion isn’t required in order for the medicine to work. It’s also an ideal option for patients who may be too young, too old, or too sick to vape or swallow a capsule.\n\nBut a tincture isn’t for everyone, particularly patients dealing with nausea or appetite loss. “The drawback of it is the taste,” says Nelson. “It’s a tincture, and the oil is a natural product; there’s nothing mixed into it to make it more palatable. When you’re taking it sublingually, the taste might be a little bit bitter. With mixing it into a beverage, you can mask the taste a little better.”\n\nFor those patients who don’t find the taste off-putting, tinctures provide relief with any number of ailments. “Tinctures higher in THC can be helpful for patients with muscular and skeletal ailments,” says Nelson, “while those higher in CBD are anti-inflammatory and effective at treating neurologic pain, spasms, and chronic pain.” \n\nPharmaCannis offers multiple tinctures in varying ratios:\n\n>* 20:1 THC to CBD\n>* 2:1 THC to CBD\n>* 1:1 THC to CBD \n>* 1:4 THC to CBD\n>* 1:20 THC to CBD\n\nWhatever the condition, patients must see a registered practitioner in order to receive a recommendation, but they’re also encouraged to do research into their options. “It is recommended you discuss your preferred mode of administration with your practitioner at the time of your certification,” according to [Rachel Schepart](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/597fa7a18fd2d222e36b5292/helping-new-york-patients-in-need-qanda-with-rachel-schepart-rph), an RPh with PharmaCannis. So let your doctor know if you think a tincture might be right for you. \n\nTinctures have managed to endure cannabis’s long, complicated history and are a fixture in dispensaries everywhere. Meanwhile, THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is another. These cannabinoids are just two of at least 113 identified in cannabis and, at this point in time, are the two we know most about. Both have extraordinary medical properties and have been found to have repeatable and lasting positive effects across a wide variety of medical conditions. \n\nTHC has been studied for decades and is known to be a very effective analgesic (pain reliever) although it’s perhaps better known for its psychoactive side effect, which can give the user a sense of euphoria or “high.” \n\n### CBD's Medicinal Properties\n\nMore recently, as cannabis has become more accepted for health and wellness, CBD has become the subject of attention too. While rigorous studies are still needed, preliminary clinical reports indicate CBD to also have analgesic properties (though perhaps not as effective as THC), as well as having anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, anti-psychoactive, and anti-convulsant properties—perhaps more when combined with THC. CBD achieves this by directly (or indirectly) affecting neurological receptors responsible for pain modulation, inflammation regulation, and mood and stress management. \n\nAll this from a single plant species: cannabis. Impressive.\n\nAnd, unlike THC, CBD isn’t known to have any intoxication or psychoactive side effect. Word of this is getting out. Many, if not most, of the HelloMD patient community regularly seek and use CBD or CBD-dominant cannabis products as part of their therapeutic regimen. Moreover, many use it in place of more traditional pharmaceutical solutions. \n\n### First Ever Large-Scale Report on CBD\n\nTo better understand this phenomenon, HelloMD and the Brightfield Group recently performed the first ever large-scale study of patients’ experiences, perceptions and understanding of CBD. The results include a fascinating look into how patients interpret the efficacy of CBD products in treating various medical conditions. \n\nFor purposes of this report, “CBD users” are defined as patients using hemp-derived CBD, marijuana-derived CBD-only products or CBD-dominant products (with CBD:THC ratios of 1:1 or higher).\n\n### The CBD Reports Key Findings\n\nA remarkable 80% of CBD users found CBD “very effective” to “extremely effective” in treating their respective conditions. An equally impressive 42% of CBD users actually stopped using their traditional prescribed pharmaceutical medications altogether, replacing them with CBD-based cannabis products. Sit with that for a moment. This behavior has far-reaching consequences across multiple domains spanning the profit centers of Big Pharma, to how we educate medical professionals, to how we might tackle the current national opioid crisis.\n\nEqually intriguing is how CBD-only products are favored by women. The study found 58% of CBD-only users to be women. This is interesting because it shows a considerable ramp when compared to our findings in the January 2016 HelloMD Medical Marijuana Study, where that number was a much lower 36%. In the joint study, HelloMD performed with UC Berkeley earlier this year on cannabis efficacy for pain, we found that number to be 44%. It would appear that women are learning about CBD fast and, perhaps, are more actively seeking cannabis products that will not leave them impaired or “high” (by the psychoactive effects that THC-dominant products have).\n\nWhile CBD can be a powerful medicine on its own, the compound’s effect may be enhanced, or more effective, when combined with other cannabinoids, specifically THC. This cooperating synergy between marijuana compounds is often called the “entourage effect” or “whole plant effect.” The push towards whole plant medicine is certainly appropriate in certain cases as it provides another path towards healing, as some patients may respond well to CBD and others to a combination of CBD and THC.\n\nWhile there’s still plenty more to learn about CBD and its applications, this much is clear: The demand for CBD, be it combined with THC or used as an extract on its own, is growing exponentially. Three quarters of those surveyed use CBD in some capacity, and more than half use it in CBD-only formulas. The latter data point is perhaps made more significant given the wider availability (across the nation) of CBD-only products.\n\nThe HelloMD and Brightfield Group report is based on responses from over 2,400 HelloMD members. \n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Applying a topical directly to the affected area on the body can treat localized inflammation, sore muscles, joint pain, and tension, offering immediate relief that can last up to four hours. There is no psychoactive high with a topical because the cannabinoids only reach the CB2 receptors in the skin and do not actually enter the bloodstream. An exception to this rule are transdermal patches, which slowly release cannabinoids into the bloodstream when placed on a veiny area of the body. \n\nTopicals are a great way to introduce people to the therapeutic effects of cannabis without any consciousness-altering side effects. Patients suffering from arthritis, menstrual cramps, headaches, and many more ailments can use topicals for relief but people experiencing more intense pain may find that topicals aren’t strong enough and will want to ingest the cannabis internally for stronger effects. \n\nTransdermals are products that transport helpful plant materials through the dermis, or skin layer, directly into the bloodstream. From there, systems inside our bodies move the plant materials directly where they need to go. When a wearer puts on a transdermal patch, the compounds in each patch enter the bloodstream directly, versus through the digestive tract or kidneys.\n \nTransdermal patches provide the highest bioavailability of plant material delivered into the wearer, when compared to other delivery options like inhaling or ingesting. Patches offer a discreet, consistent, time-released option for systematic relief. They are a great way for everyone (from elite athletes to healthy active seniors) to enjoy plant-based wellness, on the go!\n\nPopular California products include Flower Power Deep Muscle Rub and Sweet ReLeaf’s Deeply Soothing Body Butter.\n\nIf looking for a transdermal patch available nationally, try the [Siva]CBD patch(https://www.hellomd.com/biz/siva/about).\n\n### Tinctures & Sublingual Sprays\n\n ![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/596d1b982c7b4b3e1c2e81fc/embedded_images/596d1b9c2c7b4b3e1c2e81fe/Screen_Shot_2017-07-17_at_12.55.14_PM.png)\nMoxie Meds offers two different tincture formulations - photo @moxiemeds \n\nCannabis tinctures were one of the most common forms of medical cannabis sold before the prohibition. Tinctures are typically oil-based cannabis extracts, basically cannabis-infused oil, and they are another great smokeless way to introduce people to cannabis because they are so easy to dose. Placing a few drops (or a dropper full) of tincture under the tongue delivers effects quickly, within as little as fifteen minutes, as the cannabinoids are absorbed sublingually into the bloodstream. \n\nSome tinctures are sold as sublingual sprays that can be sprayed into the mouth for the same results. It is also possible to ingest a tincture by using it to infuse food or drinks, but absorbing through the digestive system will take closer to an hour or two to deliver any effect. Many cannabis companies are introducing innovations to tinctures by adding beneficial terpenes and creating CBD-dominant options. While tinctures may not seem like the most fun option for consuming cannabis, they are easy to use, practical, and effective. A necessity in any modern medicine cabinet. \n\nPopular California examples include Moxie Meds High CBD Tinctures and Pianta Tinta.\n\nIn New York, [PharmaCannis offers a variety of popular tinctures in various ratios](https://www.hellomd.com/brands/5ade6948531eba0006265736/pharmacannis).\n\n### Capsules & Pills\n\n ![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/596d1b982c7b4b3e1c2e81fc/embedded_images/596d1b9e2c7b4b3e1c2e81ff/Screen_Shot_2017-07-17_at_12.56.42_PM.png) \nCare by Design has a popular capsule line - photo @carebydesign\n\nMany people are less familiar with cannabis in capsule form, though we will surely see more of it since it is one of the only forms of medicinal cannabis allowed on the East Coast. Cannabis capsules are essentially gelatin capsules that contain a precisely dosed amount of cannabis oil. This form of ingestion is appealing to those who have avoided the stigma of ingesting cannabis because it looks more like a traditional medicine. \n\nThe precise dosing and lack of smoke also make capsules a top choice used to treat children with epilepsy or people with serious illnesses that cannot smoke or even vape. It can take one to two hours to feel the effects since the cannabinoids are absorbed by the digestive system, but relief will last four to six hours, making capsules an effective option for chronic pain and nausea. \n\nPopular California products include a variety of varying ratios offered by [Care By Design]( https://www.hellomd.com/biz/care-by-design).\n\n### Edibles\n\n ![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/596d1b982c7b4b3e1c2e81fc/embedded_images/596d1ba02c7b4b3e1c2e8200/Screen_Shot_2017-07-17_at_12.58.19_PM.png) \nGarden Society offers microdosed edibles - photo @grdnsociety\n\nEdibles refer to cannabis-infused foods - foods cooked with concentrated cannabis oil or butter. When consumed mindfully and responsibly, edibles deliver a potent body-high, offering relief from chronic pain or nausea. Cannabis beginners be warned - approach edibles with caution because the dosing can be hard to control and inexperienced people often consume more than they should, which can lead to unwanted anxiety. Doses will vary depending on the strength of the concentrate and recipe used, so you want to start with a small amount, wait two hours to see how you feel, and go from there. \n\nThe most common mistake people make is not waiting long enough to feel the effects before ingesting more. Once they kick in, effects can last between four to six hours. Lots of people love the giggly body high they get from edibles, and some describe a stronger psychedelic experience than the high reached from smoking, vaping, or tinctures. More and more low-dose edibles are hitting the market, along with healthier vegan and gluten-free options, CBD treats, and even infused tea! Look for clearly labeled doses on the packaging so you know what you’re getting yourself into (generally five to ten milligrams is considered one dose). \n\nPopular products California include: [Kikoko PositiviTea]( https://www.hellomd.com/marijuana-undefined/positivi-tea) and Garden Society Bliss Blossoms\n\n### Vape Pen & Oil Cartridges\n\n ![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/596d1b982c7b4b3e1c2e81fc/embedded_images/596d1ba12c7b4b3e1c2e8201/Screen_Shot_2017-07-17_at_1.02.13_PM.png) \nHmbldt offers a vape experience that is accurately dosed - photo @hmbldt\n\nVape pens have become very popular because of their ease of use and approachability. Similar to an e-cigarette, vape pens are portable devices which vaporize cannabis oil, allowing you to inhale cannabis vapor without the harmful byproducts of smoking. Vaping delivers immediate relief that will last between one and three hours. Great for discreet relief on-the-go and easy to use for beginners, but vape pens are still not ideal for patients who need to keep their lungs clear. The key to quality here is in choosing the right the vape cartridge, as they are not all created equal and you run the risk of inhaling nasty byproducts. The amount of options available can be dizzying - be sure to check the labels and choose a cartridge that contains a clean, solvent-free cannabis oil. \n\nPopular California products include: Hmbldt Relief Pen and Alchemy by Dark Heart Awaken.\n\nIn New York, PharmaCannis offers a variety of vape pen oil cartridges with varying ratios of THC to CBD.\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. A dab typically refers to ‘smoking dabs’ which is a dose of concentrated cannabis often inhaled through a dab rig or vaporizer. Many were, and still are, wary of the potent THC doses concentrates deliver. [Several stories covering the explosions](http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-hash-lab-explosion-20161125-story.html) of amateur extractors had many worried about the impact this up and coming method of consumption would have on legalization. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nThree years from dabbing’s mostly negative public exposure and attitudes seem to have progressed, with more and more of the industry accepting concentrated cannabis and cannabis oil extractions both medically and recreationally. Although the general public's perception have matured slightly, that is not to underscore that dabbing, when done improperly, can pose some serious health risks. \n\n[![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/58d06b4661364211a7721ab4/embedded_images/58daf7713bb6a66e3814cbb2/truefarma.jpg)](http://truefarma.com/hello-md/)\n[TRUE FARMA DEAL: 25% off your first purchase for first time customers within California.](http://truefarma.com/hello-md/) \n\n### Avoid These Pitfalls\n\nTo keep yourself out of the danger zone, avoid these simple pitfalls when dabbing with cannabis concentrates:\n\n### #1. Big No-No: Using Low Grade Titanium \n\nWhenever I hear my dabber friends mention a new deal they got on a dabbing nail or dab tool, I immediately become concerned. Generally, most retailers are trying to do their best to get you safe products, but the industry is still immature. \n\nRELATED: [IS DABBING GOOD FOR YOU?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55d4b9616531660006070000/is-dabbing-good-for-you)\n\nAs a result, you still may not know exactly what you are getting when you buy a new titanium nail from your local head\nshop. Ideally, it is a grade 2 titanium nail, although, don’t always expect the closest bargain headshop to be stocking the most premium of elemental metals. You may find grade 5 (the most common grade of titanium) or lower in bulk orders shipped from overseas. Here, you run the risk of exposing yourself to dangerous fumes when heating your titanium, which is definitely something you don’t want to inhale along with your THC. \n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/58d06b4661364211a7721ab4/embedded_images/58d06be36136421624721a90/Screen_Shot_2017-03-20_at_4.40.34_PM.png)\nA HelloMD staff member's picture of their cannabis concentrate.\n \nYou can’t expect every headshop to flash you their titanium papers for each purchase, although you can look for higher grade components than your simple bargain choices. There really is a reason why one nail is $12 and one is $80. You can also avoid this entirely by using quartz and ceramic nails, both of which are perfectly safe.\n\n### #2. Big No-No: Using Stainless Steel\n\nDon’t get me wrong, stainless steel is fine when unheated. However, when you bring it up to high temperatures, that things start to get suspect. Stainless steel has chromium in it, which is released within fumes when the stainless steel is heated. High quality, portable dabbing setups often have titanium coils since the heating elements themselves can get to upwards of 1000F after they [begin to glow]( https://www.hearth.com/talk/attachments/metal-color-temp-chart-png.100306/). For inexperienced users who like to see their titanium turn orange, this can be much, much higher. \n\nUnfortunately, lower grade coils still use other metals, like stainless steel, for their heating elements. This can expose novice users to dangerous chromium fumes, which can result in many health hazards. A quick trip over to the [CDC](https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/csem/csem.asp?csem=10&po=10) conveniently lets us know that chronic inhalation of Cr(VI) compounds increases the risk of lung, nasal, and sinus cancer. Yikes!\n\nYou can avoid this by looking for titanium coils and other solutions, such as ceramic/quartz elements or portable rig setups. Often, high quality components will be obvious to pick out from a lineup from their labeling and appearance. The profound coughing experience and gross metal taste you find from some of these coils is also a big hint to try something new. \n\n### #3. Big No-No: Buying Low Quality Concentrates\n\nThere is a risk even when purchasing an organic concentrate product from the cannabis industry. Most growers are doing their best to only provide consumers with pure products that are free from any harmful outside factors, however, as recently as February, we were reminded that cannabis can [possibly be lethal](http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2017/02/06/medical-marijuana-fungus-death-uc-davis-medical-center/) when not cared for properly. This particular case was caused by untreated fungus growing on a cannabis plant. The consumers were already in a compromised state of health, but it is without a doubt that the contaminated cannabis contributed to one of their premature deaths.\n\nSince dabbing is concentrated cannabis, these factors can be multiplied. Depending on the growing procedures and extraction methods, any leftover pesticides or unwanted particles are concentrated within the oil. Immediately, the risks for consuming contaminants and anything that you would rather not inhale is increased. Look for concentrates with certified testing and stay away from bargain basement extractions. There is often a good reason (read: bad reason) why they are so cheap.\n\n### #4. Big No-No: Being Careless with Your Blowtorch\n\nTorch and nail safety should go without mentioning here. However, due to cannabis consumers’ propensity for altered states of mind, a perfectly safe heating element can turn into a butane fueled fire starter. Torches and nails, without the proper attention, can cause serious bodily harm. From burns to outright property damage, the destruction blowtorches can cause cannot be understated.\n\nThis can be easily remedied with the right approach and a set of rules to keep you safe. Of course, keep your torch flowing into open space and never in the vicinity of flammable objects and the heated nail should always point away from you. Aside from these obvious points, be wary of how you move your torch and glass around after you consume. I personally have several steps I take so the 1000+ degree objects have a safe space before AND after a dab. This can be the difference between some icky water spilling over your carpet, or your home up in flames. \n\n### Takeaway: Be Aware of What Can Hurt You\n\nA common thread in this article is low grade components and bargain materials. I can’t stress enough that low cost products are low cost for a reason. I don’t mean to defame bulk suppliers, most are decent companies, and please don’t feel guilty for bargain shopping. I just want you to use your judgement when you are purchasing materials that are involved with your lungs. Is there a real reason why one is $8 and sort of sad looking, while another is shiny and seems like a team of scientists built it? Is it really worth your respiratory and overall health?\n\nAvoiding the four hazards outlined above will make you a much safer cannabis consumer and keep you healthier overall as you medicate with concentrates. The same qualities that make cannabis a great medication for a variety of conditions can also lead people to feel anxious, uncomfortable and even paranoid. Cannabis has a biphasic effect, meaning low and high doses of marijuana can have very different effects on people. In small doses, cannabis can help reduce stress and anxiety related to conditions like PTSD. But in high doses, it can lead people to feel extremely anxious, uneasy and nervous. \n\nMaureen Dowd, a well-known _New York Times_ columnist, is now infamous for her [marijuana trip down the anxiety-laced rabbit hole](http://www.forbes.com/sites/daviddisalvo/2014/06/09/why-eating-a-marijuana-candy-bar-sent-maureen-dowd-to-paranoia-hell/#5e15f4c93e65). Dowd bought a cannabis-infused chocolate bar from a Denver dispensary in 2014 and had a most unfortunate experience after consuming the majority of the chocolate.\n\nIt's important to note that the chocolate bar she consumed was intended to have 16 individual doses, but she gobbled it all up, which led to her paralyzingly paranoid experience. Dowd wrote about her living-personal-hell experience; it went insanely viral online, and she got lambasted publicly for her stupidity.\n\n\n_Dowd's bad experience with marijuana made her an internet sensation._\n\nYet, Dowd's experience basically comes down to a lack of education. She was unaware of:\n\n* how much to take\n* how long to wait before consuming more\n* what to do if she had a bad experience\n\nThese are all things that people should be aware of before consuming marijuana.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nCannabis-induced anxiety can echo traditional physical stressors that are experienced by people when they have anxiety attacks. Symptoms like a racing heartbeat, sweating, chills, chest pain, weakness, tingling, numbness and trouble breathing are all physical symptoms of marijuana-induced anxiety. They're harmless, but they can be scary at the time they're experienced. Feeling these physical symptoms can also cause a person to panic, even though they're in no real harm. There has still never been a documented overdose death due to marijuana. \n \nIf you're trying a higher dose of cannabis than you usually take, prepare for the chance that you may experience cannabis-induced anxiety by consuming your marijuana in a safe space with people you trust.\n\n### Tips on How to Manage Your Cannabis-Induced Panic Attack\n\nThe most important thing to remember when experiencing a cannabis-induced anxiety attack is to stay calm if you may feel completely out of control. Keeping calm can help anxiety pass more quickly. Keeping a high-ratio cannabidiol (CBD) tincture on hand is also helpful as it can typically help take the edge off much more quickly. \n\nFor many, CBD, a non-psychoactive cannabinoid, can help decrease the anxiety-producing, psychoactive effects of the THC found in marijuana. Perhaps if Dowd had had some handy, she may have been able to circumvent some of her paranoia hell. What's most important though is to remember that most of the time, less is more, especially for first-time cannabis consumers. \n\nRemember: You can't overdose from marijuana, even if it feels like it at the time of an anxiety attack. Cannabis-induced anxiety doesn't last long, usually 30 minutes to an hour. However, this does depend on the person and how much and what you've consumed.\n\nIn Maureen Dowd's case, she probably felt out of it for 24 hours based on the extremely high dose she took. In most cases though, if you're experiencing cannabis-induced anxiety, remind yourself that you're in no real danger and the feeling will pass. \n\nIt's also important to remove yourself from situations that could worsen your anxiety. For example, if you feel like you're unsafe where you are, this will lead to more anxiety. Also, cannabis-induced anxiety can feed off personal stressors, like social situations that may normally make you anxious. \n\nFocusing on self-care can help your anxiety become more bearable. Engage in an activity that helps you relax and feel comfortable through the anxiety you're experiencing. Whatever it is that can help you feel calm and safe will help your anxiety dissipate more quickly. For example, you could:\n\n* Listen to music that makes you happy\n* Watch an episode of a light-hearted or heart-warming TV show\n* Eat your favorite meal\n* Drink a hot cup of tea\n* Settle into your bed \n\nThough cannabis-induced anxiety may feel inevitable at times, it's important to be aware of how different doses of cannabis affect you so you can try to avoid it in the future. If you've tried a new strain or dosage, and realized that it triggered anxious feelings, make note of it so you can avoid that in the future. Some people are particularly vulnerable to cannabis-induced anxiety. But for most people, anxiety is caused by a specific factor from the marijuana dose they consumed. \n\nTry to recognize if the size of the dose was larger than what you typically consume or if it was a different marijuana strain with higher levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) that may have caused the problem. Many people find it helpful to keep a journal of their cannabis consumption, so they have a record of what and how much they've consumed.\n\nIf you're new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/tag/cannabis-101/) post. As a result, they forever turn their backs on vaping cannabis. I don’t blame them—everyone wants a great experience.\r\n\r\nHere are some reasons that may lead to disappointment:\r\n\r\n* Your vaporizer doesn’t match your vaping style.\r\n* You expect exactly the same effects as when you smoke flower.\r\n* You don’t know how to use your vaporizer properly.\r\n\r\nThe first two issues can easily be avoided by doing proper research and managing your expectations. However, the last issue of not knowing how to use your vaporizer properly may require some willingness, practice and experimentation on your end to be resolved.\r\n \r\nThere’s a lot of conflicting information on how to vaporize marijuana. In this post I’ll teach you how to use a dry flower vaporizer properly. Learning to use a vaporizer correctly is easier than you might think. With some practice and experimentation, you’ll be getting those clouds of vapor that you deserve.\r\n\r\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\r\n\r\n### Tip 1: Set Your Vaporizer to an Appropriate Temperature\r\n\r\nDifferent temperatures serve different vaping needs. Generally speaking, the higher you set your temperature dial, the closer you will come to a smoke-like experience and the stronger the effects of your vapor will be. But here’s the kicker: With 90% of vaporizers, the higher you set your temperature the more flavor will deteriorate. \r\n\r\nIf you’ve ever vaped marijuana you might know the burnt popcorn taste. This taste gets more prevalent the higher in temperature you go. Your vapor will also be harsher at higher temperatures. But what exactly is a high and low temperature?\r\n\r\nHere’s a general guideline to temperature for vaping:\r\n\r\n**Low-level vaping temperatures**\r\n\r\n320°F(160°C) – 356°F(180°C) effects:\r\n\r\n* Light mental medication\r\n* Very weak bodily effects\r\n* Best for flavor\r\n\r\n**Mid-level vaping temperatures** \r\n\r\n356°F(180°C) – 392°F(200°C) effects:\r\n\r\n* Moderate to strong mental and physical medication\r\n* Mental and bodily effects both equally apparent\r\n* Good for flavor\r\n\r\n**High-level vaping temperatures** \r\n\r\n392°F(200°C) – 446°F(230°C) effects:\r\n\r\n* Intense mental and physical medication\r\n* Bodily effects will be very strong\r\n* Harsh flavor\r\n\r\nIf you’re not feeling the effects of your marijuana, check your temperature and turn the dial up a bit to experiment. \r\n\r\n### Tip 2: Conduction & Convection Vaporizers Require Different Grinds\r\n\r\nNot every dry herb vaporizer needs the same grind. In fact, some vaporizers don’t need a grind at all. They can just take whole nug of flower. To know how to grind the herb for your particular vaporizer, you need to know whether you have a conduction vaporizer or a convection vaporizer.\r\n\r\nIn a conduction vaporizer, heat gets directly transferred between your herb's particles, so \r\nyou need to grind your marijuana as fine as you can. To transfer heat properly in a conduction-heating system, your herb needs to be compact and compactness can be easily achieved with a fine grind.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, since your herb is in direct contact with the heated wands of the heating chamber, you want as many herb particles as possible in contact with it. The finer your grind, the more particles you will be exposing to the heated wands of the heating chamber. To grind your herb fine to a level like this, you need a proper marijuana grinder. \r\n\r\nIn convection vaporizers, marijuana gets heated by circulating hot air. As a result, you will want to maximize airflow in your herb chamber, thus a finger-type grind is what you should aim for. \r\n\r\nGrinding your flower allows you to increase the surface area of exposure, so hot air will heat it more thoroughly. If you’re vaping large amounts, it can be annoying to break up a gram of marijuana with your fingers. Luckily, there are herb grinders which provide you with a fluffy finger-type of grind which is perfect for convection vaporizers.\r\n\r\nRELATED: [BEGINNER'S GUIDE: FINDING THE RIGHT MARIJUANA VAPORIZER](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/57fbcaf1644283000784a652/beginner-s-guide-finding-the-right-marijuana-vaporizer)\r\n\r\n### Tip 3: Conduction & Convection Vaporizers Require Different Herb Packing\r\n\r\nPacking your vaporizer properly is essential for producing those huge clouds of vapor. How you pack your vaporizer is dependent on whether you have a conduction or convection vaporizer.\r\n\r\nIf you have a conduction vaporizer, pack your vaporizer tightly and compactly, but not so compact that there’s no airflow. The optimal packing level is also different per vaporizer, so ultimately you’ll have to experiment yourself. \r\n\r\nIf you have a convection vaporizer, pack your vaporizer loosely as it's extremely important to have a proper airflow with convection vaporizers. With convection vaporizers, never fill more than 80%-90% and never compress.\r\n\r\nThere are quite a lot of hybrid vaporizers which get advertised as full or just convection vaporizers, when in fact they’re hybrid vaporizers. If you have a hybrid vaporizer, it’s best to pack your vaporizer somewhere between compact and loose. \r\n\r\nLastly, put as much herb in your herb chamber, so that the bottom part of the chamber is covered with the flower. How much differs per vaporizer, but it’s a simple and effective visual check.\r\n\r\n### Tip 4: Draw Correctly From Your Vaporizer \r\n\r\nWhile this is dependent on the particular vaporizer and inhalation method (direct draw, whip or balloon), there are three general tips with regards to drawing:\r\n\r\n1. Most vaporizers work better if you “sip” them instead of “rip” them. This means that you draw in a controlled way, like you would sip tea.\r\n\r\n2. Draw for at least 10 seconds.\r\n\r\n3. If you’re new to vaping, realize that sometimes you may not physically feel the vapor, though you will feel its effects. \r\n\r\n### Tip 5: Keep Your Vaporizer Clean\r\n\r\nThis might seem like an obvious tip, but even I catch myself being lazy with this, then blame my vaporizer for a foul taste or wispy clouds. Sometimes I open my vaporizer and see the screens are clogged with herb residue—the likely cause of my bad experience.\r\n \r\nIt’s extremely important to keep your herb chamber, vapor path and especially the screens in the vapor path clear of herb residue. Most vaporizers can easily be cleansed with ISO alcohol or Q-Tips dipped in ISO alcohol. Never dip your entire vaporizer in ISO alcohol.\r\n\r\nThese five simple tips that can lead to an optimal vaporizer experience. There are specific tips for every individual vaporizer, but regardless of what vaporizer you have, these tips should guide you in the right direction.\r\n\r\nIf you liked this post and want to learn more about vaping marijuana and marijuana vaporizers, check out [Herbonaut](https://www.herbonaut.com) where we review the latest vaporizers and write extensive user guides.\r\n\r\nIf you're new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Rosin is also full of terpenes because it is extracted at low temperatures. \n\n### Solvent Free Concentrate\n\nRosin has gained a lot of traction lately because it is made with cannabis, free of the additives that people usually worried about. The product takes far less time to create because it requires no extra processing after the preliminary extraction process. Traditional butane extracted oils need to be purged of the potentially harmful solvents to be fit for consumption, but without the use of butane, Rosin can be consumed immediately following extraction. It only takes a few seconds to have a completed Rosin product that can be used in all of the same applications as other solvent based oils. \n\nRELATED: [THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO CANNABIS CONCENTRATES](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/the-ultimate-guide-to-cannabis-concentrates)\n\n### Easy DIY \n\nRosin is extremely simple to make at home, only requiring a cannabis product, parchment paper, a hair straightener and heat resistant gloves. Making it is as simple as pressing the cannabis product, either keif, hash, or whole bud cannabis, in parchment paper with the hair straightener at 280 to 330 degrees F for 3-7 seconds. The easy process extracts resin from cannabis that is ready to use right away. \n\nRosin is a much healthier and simple alternative to traditional solvent extracted products. Many producers and sellers have created their own large industrial presses to allow them to quickly create large amounts of resin to sell to their clients. Rosin is a great way to get a powerful and concentrated dose of cannabinoids and terpenes without the added concerns of solvents in the product. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_/?hl=en) \n\n________________________________________________________\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid is often misunderstood due to its short lifespan in the cannabis plant. THCA only exists in cannabis when it is alive and degrades into THC when the plant is dried or combusted. Though THCA becomes THC later in its lifespan, THCA has none of the psychoactive properties that THC is known for. \n\nThis confusion between THCA and THC can make it hard to measure its levels within the plant. If a grower lab tests their cannabis product while it is still fresh and alive, the results may show large amounts of THCA, but if they continue on and cure the marijuana, that THCA will no longer be present. At that point the plant will have higher levels of THC than previously shown. \n\nTo understand the future potency of a cannabis strain before it has been cured, the percentage of THCA must be multiplied by 8.77, then added to the percentage of THC in the plant. This [equation](https://www.royalqueenseeds.com/blog-thca-and-thc-whats-the-difference-n268) provides the producer or patient with an accurate estimate of the amount of THC that will be present in the plant after it has been cured. \n\n### Medicinal Benefits of THCA\n\nAnother similarity between THCA and THC is that they are both often the most abundant cannabinoid in a plant, depending on the time at which it is tested. THCA on its own, however, has been seen to have many benefits in the limited number of studies that have been conducted of the plant. Studies have found THCA to have [anti-inflammatory](https://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/bpb/34/5/34_5_774/_article), [neuro-protective](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22571976), [anti-emetic](http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.2042-7158.1981.tb13806.x/abstract), and [anti-proliferative](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3570006/) properties, all which could make it medically beneficial for a range of conditions. \n\nThis variety of potential medicinal benefits could make THCA an important cannabinoid for patients with a variety of medical conditions that already benefit from marijuana. Its anti-inflammatory properties could make it beneficial for those with pain, muscle spasms, [PMS related cramping](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55a4121d38323000065b0000/medical-marijuana-may-alleviate-symptoms-associated-with-pms), or auto-immune conditions. \n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS JUICING: A NEW HEALTH TREND](https://hellomd.com/health-wellness/575703f58a98c7000b00016a/cannabis-juicing-a-new-health-trend)\n### Incredible Neuro-Protective Qualities\n\nThe neuro-protective qualities could aid patients with neurodegenerative disorders like [Parkinson’s disease](https://hellomd.com/health-wellness/5797ad9f8536ac0007d35e2e/could-cannabis-provide-hope-for-parkinsons-patients) as well as those with dementia. THCA’s anti-emetic properties could help people with stomach conditions from nausea to lack of appetite. It is also believed that THCA could have anti-proliferative properties that could help slow the rate of certain diseases and cancers. \n\nThough all of these potential benefits of THCA need continued research to be definitively proven, the possible potential of the cannabinoid cannot be ignored. THCA could have even more benefits than we currently know and understand, and in turn it could prove to add to the long list of medical benefits that people already experience from cannabis. One of the aspects of THCA that makes it particularly intriguing is, much like CBD, its lack of psychoactive properties.\n\n### Grow Your Cannabis...\n\nIf you are interested in trying out THCA, you may have to search a bit to get your hands on some fresh cannabis. Growing your own cannabis varieties with high levels of THCA can be a great way to have access to it at all times. Once you have fresh cannabis, the most common way that people consume it to receive the optimal amount of THCA is through juicing. Cannabis juicing is beginning to gain traction as more people are realizing its medicinal benefits. \n\n[Raw cannabis juice](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-juicing-a-new-health-trend) can be extracted just like any other plant through a juicer. It is important, however, that your juicer does not heat the plant as it is being extracted, or it could promote the transition from THCA to THC in the final product. Cannabis juice can be enjoyed straight, but most people find it more pleasing to dilute cannabis in other juice. Carrot juice is known to be a particularly good juice to serve with cannabis juice to get your daily dose of cannabinoids in the morning. \n\n_______________________________________________________________________\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. From wax to tinctures to oils, cannabis concentrates can be extremely potent and in many cases contain very strong doses of cannabinoids. Some may argue that concentrates are too strong, whereas others may say they deliver an extremely potent dose of medication to those who need it most.\n\nAll concentrate products are extracted from the plant using solvents, most commonly butane, CO2, or ethanol. The extraction process leaves behind a condensed product that provides a powerful dose of medication. It’s important to note that concentrates actually concentrate what is within the plant, so if there are pesticides present, those too become concentrated. It is for this reason you should always buy concentrates from a reliable brand that makes concentrates from pesticide free plants, ideally using organically grown cannabis. \n\nFor patients who need potent medicine with extra strength pain relief, concentrates are often considered to have the most efficacy. The cannabis industry has quickly embraced the world of concentrates as more and more people see the potential medicinal value. Here we provide an overview on concentrates that are readily available on the market today.\n\n### Kief & Hash\n\nKief, which is also sometimes referred to as pollen or dry sift, is a powdery substance made from the resin glands on the trichomes of the cannabis bud. Trichomes are the substance on the outside of the cannabis flower that look frost-like in appearance and contain a concentrated dose of cannabinoids and terpenes. \n\nKief can be removed from the cannabis flower by a variety of extraction methods that strip the substance off the plant. Kief is commonly made into hash, which is made by compressing the kief into a more condensed and solid block. Both of these products are most often added to a smoking device or rolled into a joint in order to increase potency of the primary cannabis product being consumed. \n\nRELATED: [IS DABBING GOOD FOR YOU?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55d4b9616531660006070000/is-dabbing-good-for-you)\n\n### Oil\n\nOil is most often made using a butane, ethanol, or CO2 extraction method. CO2 extracted oil is often touted as the oil with the least amount of residue in it, but there are different benefits for each extraction method. Oil can be used in dabbing or vaporizing, depending on its consistency. CO2 oil is most often used in vaporizers because it normally has a more liquid consistency, whereas butane oil can range from liquid to stiff, based on the extraction process. \n\nThe stiffer oils are often used for dabbing, though they do have other uses, as well. They are known as shatter, crumble, budder, and wax. Another well known type of oil is Rick Simpson oil, which is extracted using a concentrated alcohol. Rick Simpson-like oils vary, but they are often dark and tar like in color. \n\n>Shatter: Shatter is a strong, glass-like form of butane extracted oil that is known for shattering when dropped. Depending on the variety, it is sometimes sticky or smooth to the touch. Shatter is known for being one of the purest concentrates. \n\n>Crumble: Crumble is the driest variety of butane extracted oil and it is easy to break up into smaller pieces. It is known as one of the most user friendly varieties of butane extracted oil. \n\n>Budder: Budder is a thick extract that almost has the consistency of caramel candy. It is made by whipping shatter with the addition of a small amount of heat. \n\n>Wax: Wax is known as the stickiest concentrate, which is often attributed to its large amounts of decarboxylated THC. It has a very thick but moldable consistency. \n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/584dbb894bcfb100082a4383/embedded_images/584dbbc94bcfb1000cc819ee/Screen_Shot_2016-12-11_at_12.47.04_PM.png)\nAn image of cannabis wax\n\n### Tinctures\n\nTinctures have historically been one of the most common ways that cannabis has been consumed as a medication. Prior to marijuana prohibition, cannabis tinctures were commonly prescribed to patients as a remedy for a variety of medical conditions. Tinctures are often extracted through alcohol and may, depending on how it is made, contain very high levels of cannabinoids. Tinctures are normally administered through a dropper sublingually, though it can be mixed into different drinks or liquids before being consumed. Tinctures are a great way to consume cannabis for those who prefer not to smoke.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_/?hl=en) \n\n_______________________________________________________________________\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Vaporizers are seen as a healthier alternative because they do not combust cannabis in the same way that smoking does. Ideally, vaporizers only reach the temperature of about 338 degrees Fahrenheit, which allows the cannabinoids to be vaporized without actually burning the leaves or cannabis extract being used. \n\nNot burning the plant reduces the number of potentially toxic elements that may be inhaled, specifically eliminating the negative residues that are associated with smoking cannabis. A [University of California at San Fransisco study](http://www.recoverytoday.net/articles/457-marijuana-vaporization) found that, “a smokeless cannabis-vaporizing device delivers the same level of active therapeutic chemical and produces the same biological effect as smoking cannabis, but without the harmful toxins”. The study, which was conducted with 18 participants found that patients received the same effects from smoking and vaporizing, but vaporizing produced little to carbon monoxide. \n\n### Vaping Decreases Respiratory Symptoms\n\nA [2010 study](http://www.recoverytoday.net/articles/457-marijuana-vaporization) from the University of New York in Albany found that marijuana and tobacco smokers had a decrease in respiratory symptoms when switching from smoking to vaporizing. Participants achieved a 24-83% decrease in negative respiratory symptoms, though some did express that it took them longer to feel the effects of vaporized cannabis compared to smoked cannabis. Ironically, vaporizing greatly decreases the risk of respiratory problems and other conditions like bronchitis. \n\n### Little to No Smell\n\nVaporizing marijuana also does not produce a strong smell like smoking cannabis does, which makes it better option for people have to take doses of cannabis away from home. Celebrities have shown support for vaporizers as opposed to smoking cannabis. Whoopi Goldberg has publicly expressed her love of her vaporizer, even writing a column in The Cannabist titled “My Vape Pen and I, a Love Story”. She touts the ease of vaporizing opposed to smoking because of its portability, discreetness, and ease of administration.\n\n### Different Heating Mechanisms\n\nDifferent vaporizers also heat the cannabis products differently. There are two main kinds of heating that is used in vaporizers: conduction and convection. Most of the vape pens on the market use conduction heating, where the herb or oil comes into direct contact with the heat source. Though this is effective, it can sometimes lead to the burning of herbs. \n\nIn convection heating, which is the most efficient way to vaporize, heated air is circulated around the herb or oil. There are some portable vaporizers on the market that use this method, however, they do tend to be on the higher-end of the market.\n\n### What Vaporizer is Best for You?\n\nThere are many different vaporizers on the market, which means there are ones that are able to fit everyones budget and goals. It is important to decide if you want to use concentrates or whole flower cannabis before looking into what vaporizer to buy because they are specialized for the type of cannabis that you enjoy. Vaporizers are a great alternative to smoking cannabis and provide people with a discrete, quick acting administration method without any adverse effects.\n\nThere are four main types of vaporizers on the market: flower pens, wax or oil based pens, table top vaporizers, and disposable vape pens. \n\n### Flower Pens\n\nFlower pens are vaporizers that are used to vaporize bud cannabis. They come in different shapes and sizes but they are always portable. They include what is known as a dry chamber for ground cannabis to be put into and they are either battery powered or rechargeable. Flower vape pens allow for people to consume whole flower cannabis, without the need to roll it into a joint or experience the adverse effects of smoking.\n\n### Wax or Oil Cartridge Vape Pen\n\nWax or Oil pens tend to range greatly in price, though they can be fairly inexpensive. They use concentrated oil or wax and they are often very slim and portable. They are powered by batteries or are rechargeable. Wax or oil pens are good for discretion because they are very slim and they can be easily refilled on the go. Oil cartridges are often interchangeable with other vape pen models. To use an oil cartridge you purchase the cartridge and screw it into a vape pen base. Wax pens require the consumer to load the wax into the pen. Not all wax pens accept cartridges and vice versa. These types of vape pens are among the most popular due to convenience, price and lack of smell.\n\n### Table Top Vaporizers\n\nTable top vaporizers are stationary and are plugged into a power source during use. They provide larger amounts of vapor which is usually held within a bag with an attached mouthpiece. This method allows patients to slowly inhale the vapor over time or share it with other people. Table top vaporizers also allow for the user to change the temperature depending on the type of cannabis they are using. The medicinal patient that needs highly concentrated and clean vaping will often opt for the tabletop version.\n\n### Disposable Vape Pen\n\nDisposable vape pens are beginning to pop up everywhere. Much like disposable e-cigarettes, disposable vape pens are pre-filled with a certain amount of cannabis oil and they are not made to be refilled after all of the oil has been vaporized. The downside to disposable vape pens is that you often are not able to see how much medicine is left in the pen.\n\nDo you have questions about about cannabis? And while there’s minimal scientific evidence to support marijuana hangovers, much anecdotal evidence suggest that this phenomenon exists in some form—even if we don’t completely understand it. \n\nSome commonly reported symptoms of marijuana hangovers include: \n\n* Headache \n* Lethargy\n* Dry mouth\n* Nausea\n* Brain fog \n* Congested sinuses\n\nThe effects of a marijuana hangover can vary based on person and type of cannabis consumed—similar to an alcohol hangover. And much like an alcohol hangover, what you decide to do the night before and morning after can influence how long the marijuana hangover lasts. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### One Study on Marijuana Hangovers Suggests They Are Real\n\nThe most commonly referenced study on marijuana hangovers is one conducted in 1985 and published in _Drug & Alcohol Dependency_. The study rightly receives criticism for its small sample size of 13 male participants, and the low tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content of the cannabis used. Yet in spite of these short fallings, [the study still concluded that the participants experienced symptoms akin to a marijuana hangover](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2992898).\n\n### Delivery Method & Cannabis Product Quality Can Affect Marijuana Hangover\n\nIn spite of little science to support marijuana hangovers, much anecdotal evidence suggests that they are a phenomenon that’s commonly experienced. This general pool of consumer knowledge, also suggests that cannabis hangovers can also be affected by the delivery method, as well as the quality of the product.\n\nIn general, the more cannabis you consume, the more pronounced your hangover will be. This is why consumers says that edibles, which tend to be stronger and stay in your stomach longer than inhalable versions of cannabis, more commonly lead to marijuana hangovers. \n\nAdditionally, consuming sugar with cannabis—whether it be in an edible or on its own after smoking—can cause a more pronounced hangover, much like consuming overly sweet cocktails can worsen your hangover from alcohol.\n\nOther consumers note that pesticide-free, lab-tested cannabis, and products with little-to-no artificial ingredients are less likely to cause a cannabis hangover. \n\n### Dehydration & Marijuana Hangovers\n\nThe THC in marijuana can slow down the production of saliva and tears, leading to dry mouth and red eyes. Because of these common side effects, many credit dehydration as the main culprit for the nasty feelings you experience during a cannabis hangover.\n\nSlowing down the production of saliva and tears doesn’t dehydrate the body, but it can make you _feel_ dehydrated. Moreover, your actions while you’re experiencing cannabis’s effects can lead to dehydration: In Maureen Dowd’s now [classic recount of consuming too much cannabis](https://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/04/opinion/dowd-dont-harsh-our-mellow-dude.html), the writer notes that her hallucinatory state kept her confined to her bed and unable to drink water for eight hours. While cannabis itself doesn’t cause dehydration, it can indirectly lead to it. \n\nFor this reason, it’s usually a good idea to drink water before and after you consume cannabis. Many of the symptoms of a marijuana hangover can be caused by dehydration. Thus, almost all of the symptoms of marijuana hangovers, from headaches to congested sinuses, can be muted by drinking water. Drinking water also helps the body process things faster, so if you've had a particularly high level of sugar indulgence, drinking plenty of water will help your body flush out what may be compounding your hangover symptoms. \n\n### Preventing & Treating a Marijuana Hangover\n\nWhat you do before and after consuming cannabis can help determine the severity of your marijuana hangover. Filling your body with healthy, nutritious food and lots of fruits and vegetables, which also have high water contents, can help your body snap out of its funk. \n\nExercise will also help get your body back in gear by increasing blood flow and getting your body to sweat out impurities. Exercise can also help decrease brain fog, making you feel more alert and awake.\n\nOne of the most crucial aspects to preventing a cannabis hangover is also getting enough sleep. It's important to get plenty of sleep to let your body process the cannabis and get adequate rest. If you're not getting enough sleep, you may be feeling symptoms related to lack of sleep rather than your cannabis use. \n\nOverall, you can prevent or treat the symptoms of a cannabis hangover by:\n\n* Drinking plenty of water\n* Eating healthy foods\n* Avoiding sugary drinks and treats.\n* Exercising\n* Choosing high-quality, lab-tested cannabis products\n\nIf you're new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post.
