The condition causes symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea and constipation. In IBS, the digestive system appears normal, but it doesn’t function properly. Treatments typically include lifestyle changes and medications to relieve symptoms. But these medications can have limited success and severe side effects. \n\nNow, many IBS sufferers are finding relief for their symptoms with the cannabis compound cannabidiol (CBD). CBD is found in hemp, a type of cannabis that contains only trace amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the ingredient in cannabis that makes people feel high.\n\nRecently discovered connections between the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), the gut and the brain explain [why CBD can be an effective treatment](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22815234) for the [many different symptoms of IBS](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/9-signs-and-symptoms-of-ibs)—without the risks and side effects of standard prescription medications.\n\n\n### What Is IBS?\n\nFor years, IBS has baffled doctors and medical researchers. It’s considered a “functional” disorder of the digestive system since examinations of the digestive tract with endoscopes and other imaging tools don’t reveal a physical cause, such as ulcerations or inflammation. \n\nWith IBS, the digestive system simply doesn’t work the way it should. And it results in the classic symptoms of:\n\n* Cramping\n* Bloating\n* Diarrhea\n* Constipation \n\nIn some people, diarrhea predominates; this type of IBS is called IBS-D. Meanwhile, people whose primary symptom is constipation are said to have IBS-C. And still others can have alternating bouts of both problems. \n\nOther symptoms are associated with IBS, too. These can include:\n\n* Fatigue\n* Brain fog \n* Problems sleeping\n\nPeople with IBS are also likely to have mood and anxiety disorders. A recent study found that IBS sufferers are 50% more likely to have an anxiety disorder than those without IBS. IBS sufferers are also 70% more likely to have a mood disorder, such as depression.\n\nRELATED: [USING CBD TO EASE DIGESTIVE ISSUES](https://www.hellolift.com/health-wellness/5c354bbcf07c6f0009ab313a/using-cbd-to-help-ease-digestive-issues)\n\n### IBS Treatments Focus on Symptom Relief\n\nDoctors aren’t sure [what causes IBS](https://www.aboutibs.org/what-is-ibs-sidenav/what-causes-ibs.html). But they think some factors include:\n\n* Genetics\n* Infections \n* Past traumas \n\nSome people with IBS have highly sensitive digestive systems that can be triggered by:\n\n* Emotional stress\n* Eating certain foods\n* Menstrual periods\n\nBut whatever the triggering factors may be, the result is a disruption of the connections between the gut and the brain. This leads to abnormalities in a process called colonic motility—the movement of intestinal muscles and liquids that enable digestion. This process may happen too fast, causing diarrhea. Or it may slow down and cause constipation. \n\nSince we don’t understand the causes of IBS clearly, treatment focuses on relieving the symptoms that interfere with daily life. For some people with IBS, lifestyle and diet changes can help, such as:\n\n* Reducing stress\n* Eating more fiber\n* Avoiding problem foods like dairy \n* Exercising\n* Going to therapy to relieve stress, anxiety and depression\n\nBut a wide variety of very different kinds of medications is also a major part of managing IBS. These can include:\n\n* Over-the-counter medications to relieve gas, diarrhea and constipation\n* Anticholinergics, or medications such as Bentyl, which relieve bowel spasms\n* Antidepressants of various kinds, including tricyclic antidepressants like Tofranil and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Prozac and Paxil\n* Pain medications such as Lyrica and Neurontin\n\nPharmaceutical companies have developed few medications specifically to treat IBS that don’t respond to other approaches. For example, medications like Amitiza and Viberzi target processes like muscle contractions and fluid secretion in the intestines. \n\nThese medications for IBS symptoms can cause side effects, and some of them can be severe. That’s why people with IBS are turning to CBD in any of its many forms—as an oil, topical or edible.\n\nCBD’s many documented healing properties include relief from pain, anxiety and depression, all of which are associated with IBS. But more than simply providing relief from symptoms, research indicates that CBD may be able to address what some scientists see as the root cause of IBS: deficiencies in the body’s ECS.\n\n### The Endocannabinoid System Connects the Gut & the Brain\n\nOver the past couple of decades, research has focused on the ECS, a network of receptors and chemicals called ligands that appears to affect the activity of nearly every cell in the body. Two endocannabinoids, cannabinoid-like chemicals produced naturally in the body, called anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) activate the ECS.\n\nBut external cannabinoids from plant sources, particularly compounds in the _Cannabis sativa_ plant, such as CBD also interact with the ECS.\n\nMany studies have documented the strong connection between the brain and the digestive system, or the gut. It’s a connection so powerful that some researchers have called the gut a second brain. \n\nThe digestive system has many of the same neurotransmitter receptors as the brain does, and they’re connected by the vagus nerve and other parts of the central nervous system. This connection explains many familiar phenomena such as\n\n* Butterflies in the stomach\n* Nausea upon seeing a nasty image\n* Diarrhea during stress \n\nThe digestive tract, the brain and the spinal cord are all [rich in the endocannabinoid receptor CB1](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16751708), which helps the body maintain balance, or homeostasis. This includes moderating the responses of pain receptors and pathways for feel-good chemicals like serotonin and dopamine.\n\nIn this way, CBD mimics the activity of the body’s natural endocannabinoids, particularly anandamide.\n\nRELATED: [EATING ANANDAMIDE: THE BLISS MOLECULE](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a949d06f24d1300077ccb66/eating-anandamide-the-bliss-molecule)\n\n### CBD Can Regulate Signaling Between Systems\n\nAnti-anxiety medications and antidepressants can help treat IBS symptoms. This appears to confirm the connection between the gut and brain. Both areas contain abundant cannabinoid receptors, too. Researchers studying the processes that cause IBS have linked IBS to migraines and fibromyalgia, two other “functional” disorders without a clearly defined cause. \n\nBoth migraines and fibromyalgia respond to CBD, which appears to support the expression of anandamide. Recent studies imply that [both these disorders may be linked to low levels of these natural cannabinoids](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18404144)—a condition called [clinical endocannabinoid deficiency](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5576607/).\n\nThis means the same deficiency may cause the disruption of brain and gut signaling that produces the symptoms of IBS. And it also explains why CBD can help relieve these symptoms.\n\n### Taking CBD for IBS Symptoms\n\nYou can take CBD in many forms:\n\n* [Tinctures](https://www.hellolift.com/products?category=Tinctures)\n* [Topical creams](https://www.hellolift.com/products?category=Topicals)\n* [Edibles](https://www.hellolift.com/products?category=Edibles)\n* [Vape pens](https://www.hellolift.com/products?category=Vaporizers)\n\nIn all of these forms, CBD can activate endocannabinoid receptors throughout the body—and bring balance to both the gut and the brain. \n\nIt may take some time for CBD levels in the body to rise enough to balance your ECS, so pick the form of CBD that fits best with your lifestyle and try to add it to your daily routine, like you would a multivitamin each morning. \n\nAfter a couple of weeks or even months, reassess your IBS symptoms. Hopefully, you’ll recognize a reduction in your symptoms. \n\nPhoto credit: Mr. Thanathip Phatraiwat/Shutterstock.com\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? [Lupus is a complex autoimmune disorder](https://www.lupusresearch.org/understanding-lupus/what-is-lupus/about-lupus/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI3cSWvqnQ4AIVAayWCh24UQ55EAAYASAAEgIEvfD_BwE)\nin which the immune system attacks healthy tissues and organs throughout the body. \n\nDoctors usually prescribe several different classes of prescription medications to try to treat the various types of lupus. But as these drugs can have serious side effects, a growing number of lupus patients are turning to cannabidiol (CBD) for relief of symptoms including:\n\n* Pain\n* Joint swelling\n* Fever\n* Inflammation\n\nNot much research has been conducted specifically on the applications of CBD for lupus. But studies reveal that CBD is a powerful anti-inflammatory, pain reliever and neuroprotectant. \n\nThis abundant cannabis compound works on many different systems in the body to promote healing and maintain homeostasis, or balance, among the body’s many interconnected functions. For these reasons, CBD may be able to help relieve lupus symptoms and prevent flare-ups of the disease.\n\n### What Is Lupus?\n\nDisorders like lupus aren’t caused by an external source like a virus or bacteria; they’re a result of the immune system swinging into hyperdrive. In autoimmune diseases, the body’s immune system treats healthy organs and tissues as if they were foreign invaders. \n\nLupus occurs in several different forms. But in all of them, the immune system attacks and breaks down tissue, causing pain, inflammation and fever, among other symptoms. Lupus can affect just about anyone, even very young children, but most lupus sufferers are women of childbearing age. Of that group, about two-thirds are non-white women. \n\nThe different types of lupus include:\n\n* **Systematic lupus erythematosus (SLE):** This is the most common form of lupus. In SEL, the immune system attacks organs and tissues throughout the body.\n* **Discoid lupus erythematosus:** This type of lupus causes inflammation, rashes and sores on the skin, as well as extreme sensitivity to the sun.\n* **Drug-induced lupus:** Certain prescription medications cause this condition. Over 40 different drugs for conditions such as depression, heart arrhythmia and rheumatoid arthritis can trigger lupus symptoms in many people.\n* **Neonatal lupus erythematosus:** This affects infants born to women who have SLE.\n\nThe exact mechanisms that trigger lupus aren’t clearly understood, but several known factors besides prescription medications are associated with developing the condition, including: \n\n* Viruses\n* Infections\n* Environmental factors \n* Genetics\n\n### Lupus Has Many Symptoms\n\n[Lupus has a variety of symptoms](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/lupus/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20365790), depending on the parts of the body that the immune system attacks. The most typical symptoms for all types of lupus are:\n\n* Extreme fatigue\n* Pain\n* Swelling\n* Intermittent fevers\n* A distinctive rash that appears in a butterfly pattern across the nose and cheeks\n\nOther symptoms can include:\n\n* Inflammation of the lungs or heart \n* Problems with blood vessels and circulation\n\nIf lupus affects the central nervous system, it can cause depression, seizures, and memory and vision problems. Lupus can also cause serious outcomes such as heart attack, kidney failure and stroke.\n\n### How Do Lupus Suffers Treat Their Condition? \n\nLupus is a chronic condition that, at this point, has no real cure. Treatments for lupus are intended to manage symptoms and reduce flare-ups, and they include a variety of prescription drugs from several different classes, including:\n\n* **Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs):** Both over-the-counter medications like Aleve and Advil as well as stronger prescription drugs can relieve pain and inflammation.\n* **Opioid painkillers:** Powerful drugs like oxycontin can also be prescribed for lupus pain.\n* **Anti-malaria drugs:** Hydroxychloroquine, for example, can help reduce flare-ups and moderate immune system responses.\n* **Corticosteroids:** Prednisone is one corticosteroid that can reduce inflammation and suppress immune responses.\n* **Immunosuppressants** Drugs like methotrexate can reduce immune responses and allow tissues to heal.\n\nThese and other medications prescribed to treat the various types of lupus can have severe side effects that can include lung, kidney and liver damage. But because CBD affects the underlying systems that drive immune response, pain signaling and inflammation, it may be able to relieve a variety of lupus symptoms without these risks. \n\n### CBD Has Systemwide Effects That May Address Various Lupus Symptoms\n\nMany of the health benefits of cannabis derive from CBD, one of the most abundant compounds in the _Cannabis sativa_ plant. Unlike another famous cannabinoid, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD doesn’t cause people to feel high. But it does support the functioning of numerous systems and subsystems in the body. \n\nRelatively recent research has revealed the existence of a bodywide system of receptors called the endocannabinoid system (ECS) that responds to cannabinoids. Cannabinoids produced by the body, called endocannabinoids, and cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, including CBD, activate the ECS receptors. \n\nResearchers are still studying the scope and functions of the ECS, but this system appears to play a major role in maintaining homeostasis, or keeping many of the body’s subsystems in balance. \n\nCBD can activate receptors in the ECS, but it does much more. At least [some parts of the ECS are present in almost every type of cell in the body](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5686045/), and CBD can moderate the activity of processes that affect the functioning of many different types of cells. One of these is [T-cells, a kind of cell that’s responsible for immune system responses](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26772776/). This means CBD may be able to help regulate immune system functioning and reduce the hyperactivity that causes lupus symptoms.\n\nBecause the ECS is connected to nearly all cell types throughout the body, a number of studies show that CBD can have effects that may also help ease other kinds of lupus symptoms like:\n\n* Pain signaling\n* Neurological functioning\n* Brain processes involving mood, memory and cognition \n\nIn a recent survey by the Lupus Foundation, 65% of lupus sufferers cited pain as their most debilitating symptom. A number of studies have documented CBD’s ability to relieve pain by moderating pain signaling to the brain. CBD also has anti-inflammatory properties, so that it can relieve the swelling and other inflammation symptoms that go along with lupus.\n\nCBD has far-reaching effects on cells and processes throughout the body, including those that can trigger the symptoms of lupus. This can explain why some lupus patients are finding more relief for their symptoms from CBD than from prescription medications, with fewer risks and side effects.\n\nPhoto credit: tommaso79/Shutterstock.com\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? Large-scale hemp cultivation gives the U.S. a competitive edge against China, the country that cultivates 50% of the world’s hemp. \n\nHemp brings in a much higher per-acre price to the famer than corn does. And unlike corn, hemp takes a fraction of the water to grow.\n\nOver the next few years, hemp farms will begin to blanket the American landscape. A [state-by-state-guide of the current laws regulating the growing and manufacturing of hemp](http://www.ncsl.org/research/agriculture-and-rural-development/state-industrial-hemp-statutes.aspx) shows that even though industrial hemp is legal at the federal level, it will be up to individual states to define how hemp will be licensed, manufactured and distributed. \n\nRELATED: [HEMP’S HISTORY AS A SOURCE OF FOOD, FIBER AND NOW CBD](https://hellomd.com/articles/hemps-history-as-a-source-of-food-fiber-and-now-cbd/)\n\nBecause the bill passed only a few months ago, farmers are having some challenges buying hemp seeds for planting. Many states are creating pilot programs to help lawmakers grapple with the new challenges of creating rules for hemp. It’s a plant that was, until now, erroneously lumped together with its cousin the cannabis plant, which contains tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the cannabinoid responsible for the well-known euphoric high. \n\nDespite the fact that industrial hemp contains an almost untraceable amount of THC, it was federally regulated as if it were a dangerous drug on par with heroin. With the passage of the Farm Bill, everything has changed. \n\n### Now That the Farm Bill Passed, Is CBD Legal? \n\nCannabidiol (CBD) is one of the many chemical compounds found in the hemp plant. Hemp-derived CBD oil forms the basis for the products currently sold in many parts of the United States to help address a variety of medical issues including inflammatory conditions, anxiety and insomnia. \n\nPrior to its use as a therapeutic support for medical conditions, hemp was mostly used for industrial purposes such as fiber and cloth. With the explosion of CBD products being manufactured for the health and wellness markets, lawmakers are working overtime to determine the best way to regulate all aspects of the CBD industry. \n\nOne of the Farm Bill’s most exciting changes to the regulation of hemp and hemp-derived CBD products is moving its regulation from the Controlled Substances Act to the Department of Agriculture. For the first time in nearly 80 years, hemp is no longer a controlled substance. \n\nChallenges still remain regarding [how the Drug Enforcement Administration will ultimately classify CBD](https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/cbd-farm-bill-legalization-marijuana-hemp-769944). Currently, the DEA has lowered drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration containing CBD from Schedule I, where THC-containing cannabis remains, to a much-lower Schedule V. Right now, there’s only one drug that falls into this FDA-approved category: Epidiolex, which contains CBD and is used to treat a form of epilepsy. \n\nThere’s still a great deal of uncertainty regarding how or if the DEA will regulate the thousands of therapeutic CBD products available to the public. CBD activists point to the fact that to date, the [FDA “has not prohibited the sale of hemp-derived CBD products or ordered a product recall](https://hempsupporter.com/statement-on-the-status-of-hemp-derived-cbd-under-federal-law/).” Activists are heartened by recent comments from FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, who stated that [there could be a path by which cannabis-derived compounds would be permitted in a food or dietary supplement](https://www.consumerreports.org/marijuana/will-new-farm-bill-make-cbd-legal-everywhere/). \n\n### Hemp & CBD Producers Are Optimistic About the Future \n\nDespite some of the early confusion regarding CBD’s legal status, those in the industry couldn’t be happier. The Farm Bill [protects hemp farmers and hemp-derived product manufacturers from prosecution](https://www.cannabisbusinesstimes.com/article/2018-farm-bill-hemp-cannabis-businesses/). For the first time, U.S.-based CBD manufacturers will have the opportunity to purchase large quantities of CBD oil from American farmers. \n\nRELATED: [ONE FARMER’S TRANSITION FROM CATTLE TO CANNABIS](https://hellomd.com/articles/one-hemp-farmers-transition-from-cattle-to-cannabis/)\n\nThe growing industry has [enormous possibility to support small farmers](https://www.themonitor.com/2019/01/07/budding-industry-2018-farm-bill-bring-new-opportunity-local-cbd-distributor/). Farmers who choose to grow hemp organically will now be able to get their hemp organically certified, because of its new status as a legal, federally recognized crop. \n\nHemp product manufacturers are already looking into the possibilities of the inclusion of CBD and other hemp derivatives into other products, as consumers continue to show their interest in consuming CBD in foods and beverages, as well as using it topically and in other preparations.\n\n### The Farm Bill Will Help Researchers Hone in on the Scientific Basis for CBD’s Efficacy \n\nNow, with the legalization of hemp, [the opportunities for research on CBD will grow](https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2018/12/13/18139678/cbd-industry-hemp-legalization-farm-bill). Research will result in bringing better, safer and more standardized products to the consumer, while pinpointing the exact ways CBD works on the body and mind. \n\nResearch has already confirmed that hemp-derived CBD has been shown to be a safe additive in foods and supplements. Even the World Health Organization’s findings determined that CBD doesn’t lead to abuse or dependency, and that it appears to be well-tolerated by the majority of the public. \n\nAnother tremendous benefit of the Farm Bill will be the research that can now take place on some of the other cannabinoids in hemp. These are already showing promise for the delivery of other beneficial properties for health.\n\n### Can I Get Arrested for Possessing a CBD Product? \n\nIs it possible that an asteroid will fall on your house? Sure. Is it possible that you’ll be arrested for possessing a product containing CBD? It’s legally possible, but the likelihood of law enforcement busting the public for possession of CBD is probably equivalent to that asteroid falling on your home. \n\nHowever, it’s important to remember that the CBD products you currently own were grown and purchased prior to the passage of the Farm Bill. So technically, they’re still considered federally illegal to possess.\n\nIs law enforcement interested in [arresting someone for possessing what’s akin to a dietary supplement](https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/d3bbvv/congress-just-legalized-hemp-but-what-does-that-mean-for-cbd)? Probably not, but it’s important to keep your CBD products as you would a prescription medication or beauty product—away from the kids and not stored on the dashboard of your vehicle.\n\n### CBD Has a Bright Future, but it Will Take Vocal Consumers to Help Take it to the Next Level \n\nAs we’ve seen with states that have legalized adult-use marijuana, the regulations for clean, lab-tested products is one thing that everyone agrees has greatly benefitted the cannabis industry and consumers. \n\nAnd though some CBD producers have already received [warning letters from the government](https://mgretailer.com/cannabis-news/farm-bill-means-cbd-is-legal-producer-receives-letter-that-could-indicate-otherwise/) regarding their business practices, most industry analysts feel that with the support of enthusiastic and vocal consumers, CBD will find a legal place on the shelves of grocers, health food stores and pharmacies. \n\nAdvocates hope that with consumer pressure, the FDA will be compelled to regulate CBD similarly to over-the-counter medications or health supplements. Though it will take time for states and local jurisdictions to weigh in on the growing, manufacturing and sale of hemp-derived products like CBD, the industry, which is slated to top $1.6 billion in sales in the next few years, is poised to bring a [plethora of new products](https://www.menshealth.com/health/a25559940/farm-bill-legal-hemp-cbd/) to store and virtual shelves in the very near future.\n\nPhoto credit: Felix Broennimann/Shutterstock.com\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? ","slug":"how-fast-will-cbd-work-for-me","content":"After a couple of years of writing and talking about cannabidiol (CBD), one of the most common questions I get asked is: “How long does it take for CBD to start working?” \n\nSome people complain that CBD didn’t work for them, because they didn’t feel anything. But was that because they didn’t wait long enough to feel CBD’s effects? Why does it take some people weeks or even months to get any benefits from CBD? And why, for others, does CBD seem to work like magic after the first use? \n\nLet’s dive into the question that everyone who’s interested in CBD seems to be asking: How fast will CBD work for me? \n\n### How Does CBD Work?\n\nBefore we can talk about the effectiveness of CBD, it’s important to start with some of the basics about how CBD works in the body. CBD is a naturally occurring compound, technically called a phytocannabinoid (a cannabinoid that comes from a plant), found in _Cannabis sativa_, including the hemp variety of the plant. \n\nThousands of species of mammals, humans included, are equipped with something called an endocannabinoid system (ECS). This system is made up of two types of receptors, CB1 and CB2, which are found all throughout the body. \n\nThe ECS plays a role in a long list of the body’s processes such as:\n\n* Sleep\n* Mood\n* Inflammation\n* Stress\n* Pain perception\n* Hunger\n\nThe main goal of the ECS is to maintain internal balance in the body. This is also known as homeostasis, and it keeps all systems working efficiently. \n\nRELATED: [IS YOUR ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM IN BALANCE?](https://hellomd.com/articles/is-your-endocannabinoid-system-in-balance/)\n\nPhytocannabinoids, like CBD, and naturally occurring endocannabinoids that our bodies produce, interact with the ECS receptors to spur physiological changes. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD doesn’t stimulate ECS receptors so much as it modifies them and the surrounding systems to promote balance. This is part of the reason why researchers believe THC is responsible for that classic marijuana head high, while CBD doesn’t have the same effect. \n\nWhile there’s still much to be researched, [CBD is thought to modify CB1 receptors](https://bpspubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/bph.12944), helping keep them from getting overstimulated or overactive. This is in part why CBD can tone down THC’s psychoactive effect. \n\n[CBD is also thought to increase natural levels of endocannabinoids](https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fphar.2016.00370/full) by inhibiting reuptake. In other words, allowing these endocannabinoids to be more bioavailable for use in the body. \n\n### Using CBD to Balance the ECS\n\nWith this basic understanding of the ECS and how it works to maintain balance in our bodies, let’s get back to the original question: Does CBD work immediately or do CBD levels need to be built up before feeling its effects?\n\nUnfortunately, the answer to this question isn’t exactly simple. \n\nSome CBD products can offer more immediate relief from anxiety, pain and more. But taking CBD daily and allowing it to build up in your system can help maintain balance in the ECS in the long term. So, while you could feel the effects of CBD immediately, you may not enjoy its full potential until it’s had a chance to build up in the body.\n\nHere’s an example: You can take Tylenol to help manage the pain from a twisted ankle, but it’s not doing much to address the root cause of that pain. But if you continually work on balance training and building up the small muscles in your foot, you could avoid twisted ankles altogether. \n\nAnd to make things even more complicated, there are many factors to consider when addressing the question of whether CBD works immediately. Various facets of your life and properties of your CBD product will influence how quickly and how strongly CBD works for you, like; \n\n* Dose\n* Potency\n* Diet\n* Body weight\n* Metabolism\n* Genetics\n\nPlus, there are people out there who may never feel the effects of CBD. A “healthy” person could have a pretty balanced ECS naturally, in which case CBD may not make a material difference in their lives at all. \n\n### Does the Way You Consume CBD Make a Difference?\n\nResearchers are still making sense of the ECS and how CBD interacts with it. But one thing is certain: The consumption method used to ingest CBD makes a big difference for how quickly a person will feel its effects. This is because different consumption methods allow CBD to absorb into the bloodstream and brain faster than others do. \n\n* **CBD vaporizers:** Inhaling CBD via a [CBD vaporizer](https://www.hellolift.com/products?category=Vaporizers) is the fastest way to absorb it into your body. When inhaled, CBD goes from the lungs directly into the bloodstream, traveling to the brain quickly. \n\n> When consumed this way, the effects of CBD can be felt within minutes. The downside of vaping CBD is that the effects don’t last as long as other consumption methods do. \n\n* **CBD tinctures:** These are sort of the middle-of-the-road option when it comes to how quickly the body can access CBD. Not only are [tinctures](https://hellomd.com/tag/tincture/) very versatile (you can easily add a tincture to your coffee, smoothie or food), but they also act fast. Not as fast as a vaporizer, but the effects tend to last longer than when vaping CBD. \n\n> A couple drops of CBD tincture applied sublingually (under the tongue and held for a few seconds) can be effective typically within about 15 minutes for most folks. This is because the mouth’s mucous membranes do a great job of absorbing CBD, so it goes directly into the bloodstream without having to pass through the digestive system to get there. \n\n* **CBD edibles:** There’s no doubt that [CBD edibles](https://hellomd.com/tag/edible/) take the longest of all the consumption methods to kick in. When eaten, CBD must make its way through the digestive system and then the liver to finally metabolize. This could take anywhere from 20 minutes to two hours, depending on all sorts of factors including how full you are and how fast your metabolism works. While it may take longest to kick in, the effects of CBD edibles tend to last the longest (up to four hours or more). \n\nSo, to answer the question, CBD can work immediately depending on your individual body, symptoms and consumption method. But CBD can also be effective with regular use as levels increase, helping your body achieve homeostasis. \n\nPhoto credit: [rawpixel](https://unsplash.com/photos/dFNLKdJuFg0?utm_source=unsplash&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=creditCopyText) \n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? To figure out how much of your hemp CBD tincture to use, think about how much CBD you want in each gummy. For example, if you want 2 mg of CBD per gummy, you would use 100 mg of CBD for your recipe. \n\n### How to Make CBD Gummies \n\n1. Pour liquid into a small- or medium-sized saucepan. \n2. Sprinkle the gelatin on top, and let it sit for a few minutes, until it has been absorbed into the liquid. Once this has happened, mix well. \n3. Place the saucepan on medium heat, and allow the grainy liquid to warm—but don’t let it boil. Keep the liquid on the heat until all of the gelatin dissolves and the mixture becomes runny. \n4. Add your sweetener, and stir well.\n5. Add the CBD tincture, and stir well. If you’re using molds, you can opt to add your CBD to each individual mold. This will give each CBD gummy a more accurate dose. \n6. Pour liquid into your pan or molds. You can pour the liquid into a measuring cup or use a dropper to make filling your molds easier. \n7. Refrigerate for 2–3 hours, until liquid has set. \n8. Remove gummies from molds or cut them into squares if using a pan. \n9. Keep your CBD gummies in an airtight container, and consume them within two weeks. \n\n### Healthy Tips for Your CBD Gummy Recipe \n\nThis CBD gummy recipe calls for you to use liquid and gelatin. And while you can use any version of these two ingredients, here are a few healthy options to consider. \n\nFor a liquid, green juice or another kind of fruit and vegetable juice can add a nutritious boost. If you’d like to add probiotics to your gummies, you can use kombucha as a liquid base for your CBD gummies. Also consider adding any other supplements that dissolve well in water, like spirulina. \n\nAs for the various types of gelatin, not all are created equal. Grass-fed gelatin tends to be more nutrient dense than other types of gelatins on the market. When combined with a substance called liposomes, CBD may be able to go a lot further than it can on its own. \n\nScientists have known for a while that certain substances can actually help transport medicines into the body for a controlled release. These drug-delivery systems allow chemicals like CBD to catch a ride to a targeted area of the body—without being released or broken down on the way. This is why consuming liposomes along with CBD could help the cannabinoid become more easily available to your body.\n\n### What Are Liposomes?\n\n[Liposomes are tiny sphere-shaped vesicles, or bubbles](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3599573/). They’re usually made in a lab using biomolecules called phospholipids. These artificial, fluid-filled bubbles were designed in the mid-1960s as a way to carry active molecules to an intended site. \n\nLiposomes are particularly useful in medicine, where drugs often have to pass through the digestive system before making their way into the bloodstream. For medicines that are broken down by digestion, medicinal effects may be lost as they pass through your system. But with liposomes, these medicines can be carried, unharmed, to their intended location. \n\nSo how does this work? Phospholipids actually contain a hydrophilic (or water-attracting) head and a hydrophobic (or water-repelling) tail. When these come into contact with water, the head turns inward as the tail turns outward and forms a bilayer, or a film that’s two molecules thick. This results in a tiny liposome bubble, which can encapsulate other chemicals and protect them from being broken down during digestion. \n\nLiposomes can transport ingredients, fully protected, to specific tissues. This makes the bioavailability of medicines transported with liposomes much higher than those delivered without their protective bubble.\n \nPharmaceutical and nutraceutical companies have used liposomes successfully for years and now CBD product makers are also starting to take advantage of this safe, nontoxic, nonimmunogenic, biodegradable and incredibly useful drug-delivery system. \n\n### How Liposomes Help CBD Absorption \n\nSpecific research on CBD and liposomes is hard to find. But based on the science of each, they seem to be a perfect match. Like other chemicals, liposomes can encapsulate CBD for a safer trip to its intended location. \n\nBy preserving CBD as it travels through the digestive system, liposomes should effectively lower your needed dose. You’d need much higher levels of CBD to get the same results if you had to account for the amount that’s usually lost to digestive enzymes. With liposomes, the amount of CBD actually absorbed, relative to the amount taken, should be much higher. \n\nLiposomes are also well-suited to transporting hydrophobic molecules like CBD. Because CBD shies away from water, it can be directly mixed with liposomes during formation. This means that little to no CBD is lost in the process of being trapped by the liposomes, and even more of it will make its way into your system. \n\nWe may even be able to use liposomes to increase efficient CBD delivery through the skin. A study from 2003 found that [CBD was better absorbed by a group of arthritic mice when it was encased in a similar carrier called ethosomes](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14644587).\n\nResearchers noted that this produced much higher accumulation of CBD in the skin and muscle of the mice and significantly reduced inflammation. This suggests that carriers like liposomes may help CBD better penetrate the skin’s layers. \n\nRELATED: [WHY CBD CAN HELP HEAL WOUNDS & SCARS](https://hellomd.com/articles/why-cbd-can-help-heal-wounds-and-scars/)\n\n### Using Liposomes & CBD \n\nIf you’d like to use liposomes to improve your own CBD delivery, don’t pull out your chemistry set just yet. Liposomes aren’t a supplement you can mix in with your CBD. CBD needs to be embedded into the microscopic liposomes—something you can’t do at home. \n\nYou shouldn’t try to mix up liposomes yourself, but thankfully, experts are already making CBD products with liposomes, such as [Elixinol’s Hemp Oil Liposomes](https://www.kindofamazingproduct.com/?gclid=Cj0KCQjw-NaJBhDsARIsAAja6dNb1bRW4xFOWR05IxHPAu1f6tP0dzf-UNJx6MiCQbxdOr1bNWNzOfIaAt2nEALw_wcB/).\n\nChris Husong, Elixinol’s director of sales and marketing, says its CBD Liposomes are an employee favorite. He adds, “[Our Liposomes taste great and are formulated to be fast-absorbing and convenient](https://www.hellolift.com/health-wellness/5b6291d9a1805500087dba24/elixinol-hemp-cbd-for-better-health-and-wellness). Some people take a couple of drops under the tongue, while other folks just add it to their water. Either way, it’s great for when you’re on the go or to just get CBD throughout the day.”\n\nTry out the Elixinol Liposomes or another CBD liposomes product, and see if it works for you. It just may deliver a more potent and efficient CBD experience. \n\nPhoto credit: [Almos Bechtold](https://unsplash.com/@almosbech)\n \nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? After all, food companies wouldn’t be so eager to market their products’ antioxidant properties if they didn’t offer some benefit. However, chances are you’ve never stopped to consider what antioxidants actually are or what they do.\n\nAntioxidants are extremely important for maintaining your overall health. So, yes, you should consume products that boost your body’s production of antioxidants. And luckily, cannabidiol (CBD) happens to be a great way of doing that. \n\nLet’s take a look at the science behind antioxidants and how you can use CBD to help promote their production in your body.\n\n### What Are Antioxidants & Why Do You Need Them?\n\nTo understand antioxidants, you first need to understand oxidation, which is also known as reduction-oxidation reaction—or redox for short. Oxidation is a chemical reaction by which one atom transfers an electron to another atom. We actually see oxidation in nature all of the time, like when a fire ignites or metal turns to rust.\n\nBut what does oxidation have to do with your health? Well, when human cells in the body create energy, they produce what’s called a free radical, which is a leftover waste molecule. Certain factors can lead to an overabundance of free radicals in your body, such as:\n\n* Smoking\n* Stress\n* Pollution \n* UV light\n\nAs a single-electron atom, a free radical is problematic as it attempts to steal electrons from healthy, double-electron atoms in the body. When one of these atoms loses an electron to a free radical, it becomes a free radical itself. This creates a domino effect because even by stealing an electron from a healthy atom, the free radical still remains a free radical.\n\nThis electron-stealing process is known as oxidative stress, and it’s not good for your health. Just like metal rusting, oxidative stress causes our bodies to decay at the cellular level, and if left unchecked, it can lead to some very serious diseases. For example, oxidative stress is associated with an increased risk of:\n\n* Heart attacks\n* Parkinson’s disease\n* Cancer\n* Alzheimer’s disease\n\nThankfully, to combat oxidative stress, our bodies naturally produce antioxidants, and we can help boost their production levels through the foods we eat. The most beneficial foods in this area are high in vitamins C and E, such as:\n\n* Grapes\n* Blueberries\n* Dark chocolate\n* Kale\n* Nuts\n\n### CBD Is a Great Promoter of Antioxidants\n\nAnother great source of antioxidants happens to be cannabis, specifically CBD. While CBD is derived from cannabis and the hemp variety of the cannabis plant, too, it doesn’t make consumers feel the high commonly associated with the plant.\n\nThis high comes from tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is a completely separate compound from CBD. Hemp-derived CBD only contains at most 0.3% THC by law. So by choosing clean, lab-tested hemp CBD, you can safely enjoy cannabis’s health benefits without feeling a head high.\n\nBelieve it or not, it’s hardly new knowledge that CBD can help win the fight against oxidants. In fact, the discovery was made in 1998 by scientists at the National Academy of Sciences. They found that [CBD has natural antioxidant properties, which combat cellular decay](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC20965), particularly in the brain. Their work made the U.S. government take notice. And since 1999, [the government has held a patent on the antioxidant properties of cannabinoids](http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=6630507.PN.&OS=PN/6630507&RS=PN/6630507).\n\nCBD’s antioxidant benefits stem from how it interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is involved in many of our physiological and cognitive functions, such as:\n\n* Memory\n* Pain\n* Appetite\n* Mood\n* Fertility \n\nPerhaps most significantly in terms of antioxidants, the ECS plays a big role in regulating the health and regrowth of cells.\n\nRELATED: [6 WAYS CBD GOES TO WORK IN YOUR BODY](https://hellomd.com/articles/6-ways-cbd-goes-to-work-in-your-body/)\n\nCannabinoids, like CBD, interact with the ECS’s network of receptors. Specifically, CBD is known to interact with the CB2 receptor, which regulates the health of brain cells. By promoting antioxidant effects through the CB2 receptor, CBD has been shown to be a potentially useful tool for fighting off degenerative neurological diseases.\n\n### How to Use CBD to Fight Against Oxidation\n\nStudies have also found that not only can [cannabis slow down the oxidative process, it can even reverse some of its worst effects](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17196181). But there’s some debate over how consumers can get the most out of CBD’s antioxidant-promoting properties.\n\nRELATED: [6 MISTAKES HEMP CBD NEWBIES MAKE](https://hellomd.com/articles/6-mistakes-hemp-cbd-newbies-make/)\n\nSome studies have found that CBD works best as an antioxidant when it’s consumed as part of the whole cannabis plant, rather than as an extract. If you’re not interested in consuming cannabis in any form, you can take full-spectrum CBD derived from hemp. Full-spectrum hemp contains a number of cannabinoids, most of them in trace amounts except for CBD and CBDa, along with vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, flavonoids and more.\n\nFor regular, daily CBD to help reduce the free radicals in your body, you’ve got lots of options, including:\n\n* [Sublingual tinctures](https://hellomd.com/tag/tincture/)\n* [Capsules](https://hellomd.com/tag/capsule/)\n* [Vape pens](https://hellomd.com/tag/vaporizer/)\n\nTake a hemp CBD capsule while munching on your morning granola and blueberries or include some hemp CBD oil in your kale salad dressing, and you’ve done a great job in helping your body fight off those dangerous free radicals. \n\nPhoto credit: [Esteban Lopez](https://unsplash.com/@exxteban)\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? It can include:\n\n* Atherosclerosis, which is commonly referred to as hardening of the arteries \n* Hypertension, or high blood pressure \n* Coronary artery diseases, such as angina\n* Peripheral artery disease, which is connected to atherosclerosis \n* Stroke, which occurs when a blood clot (which can be related to artery disease) blocks an artery in the brain, or when a blood vessel in the brain, such as an aneurysm, ruptures\n* Myocarditis, or inflammation of the heart muscles\n* Circulatory problems and diseases of the veins\n\n### What Causes Cardiovascular Disease?\n\nOne reason cardiovascular disease is so common, and often so hard to treat, is that [it can have many different causes](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/heart-disease/symptoms-causes/syc-20353118). Cardiovascular issues can arise from:\n\n* Congenital problems with the way the heart or blood vessels are formed \n* Infection or inflammation in the heart or blood vessels \n* Lifestyle factors such as smoking, stress, lack of exercise and eating a diet high in processed foods, sugars and salt\n* Chronic conditions like diabetes\n* Obesity\n* High levels of LDL, or “bad” cholesterol \n\n### The Many Treatments for Cardiovascular Disease\n\nBecause so many factors can contribute to developing some form of cardiovascular disease, standard medical treatment for these problems can also vary considerably. Some factors can be handled with lifestyle changes. Simply quitting smoking and exercising more can go a long way toward stopping or reversing some kinds of cardiovascular problems. \n\nBut when these things don’t work, doctors frequently turn to an array of powerful pharmaceuticals to handle different aspects of cardiovascular disease. This can include:\n\n* Hypertension medications to lower blood pressure\n* Anticoagulants to keep blood thin\n* ACE inhibitors and statin drugs to lower cholesterol levels\n\nSome patients end up taking more than one of these drugs, and many folks are already taking other medications for different health problems, too. \n\nThese drugs can have serious side effects, and for some people, they simply don’t work. So it’s of great interest that research suggests that [CBD can be an effective treatment for some forms of heart and cardiovascular disease](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22670794), without the risks and side effects of traditional pharmaceuticals. This is because CBD has a wide range of therapeutic properties that can address many of the different causes of cardiovascular disease.\n\nRELATED: [6 WAYS CBD GOES TO WORK IN YOUR BODY](https://hellomd.com/articles/6-ways-cbd-goes-to-work-in-your-body/)\n\n### CBD Promotes Cardiovascular Health\n\nCBD is one of the most abundant compounds in the _Cannabis sativa_ plant. It occurs alongside the psychoactive compound tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), in many strains. But the hemp variety of the plant, which contains no more than 0.3% of THC, also features CBD, and CBD doesn’t have the same mood-altering effects as THC. \n\nSome studies have suggested that people who consume marijuana have a higher rate of heart disease than the population at large does and that [high doses of THC can be detrimental to folks with cardiovascular disease](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/02/190211083204.htm). So more research is needed to clarify the effects of cannabis with THC on the heart.\n\nBut many other studies have focused on hemp-based CBD. And this research has shown that, taken on its own, CBD has a variety of healthful effects that explain why it can contribute to improved heart health.\n\n* **CBD is an anti-inflammatory.** One factor that plays a major role in the development of cardiovascular disease is inflammation. Inflammation is the body’s response to injury or foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses. \n\n> But when there’s constant, low-level inflammation of the tissues due to things like smoking or a diet of harmful foods, it can contribute to the stiffening of arteries and the buildup of plaque in arteries and veins. CBD can damp down inflammation and give damaged tissues support to heal.\n\nRELATED: [HOW CBD CAN CURB CHRONIC INFLAMMATION](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-cbd-can-curb-chronic-inflammation/)\n\n* **CBD is antibacterial.** Bacteria can cause low-level inflammation and infection responses in the body, too. These responses can affect the heart and vascular system and cause plaque to develop in arteries. In various lab tests, CBD has been shown to be effective against some kinds of bacteria. \n\n* **CBD is an antioxidant.** Oxidative stress occurs when unstable molecules called free radicals overwhelm the body’s defenses. This contributes generally to inflammation throughout the body, and specifically to cardiovascular conditions such as atherosclerosis, stroke and heart disease. CBD can reduce the effects of oxidative stress, which could reduce the effects of inflammation on the body—or help prevent it altogether. \n\n* **CBD can help lower blood pressure.** CBD can reduce tension in the walls of blood vessels, a process called vasorelaxation. Stress and other factors such as drinking alcohol and having too much sodium in the diet can cause the walls of blood vessels to become narrow and stiff. This makes it harder for blood to pump normally and contributes to high blood pressure.\n\n> In a 2004 study performed on rats, [endocannabinoids seemed to regulate cardiovascular function, normalizing blood pressure](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=Endocannabinoids+acting+at+cannabinoid-1+receptors+regulate+cardiovascular+function+in+hypertension). Overall, CBD has been shown to promote relaxation and calm anxiety. For the same reasons, it can help relax the walls of arteries and veins so that they become more flexible and allow blood to flow more easily. This can lower blood pressure and reduce risk factors for heart attack, stroke and circulatory problems.\n\n### How to Take CBD for Your Heart\n\nYou can protect your heart by incorporating CBD in many forms:\n\n* [Tinctures](https://hellomd.com/tag/tincture/)\n* [Capsules](https://hellomd.com/tag/capsule/)\n* [Transdermal patches](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-transdermal-patches-medicate-through-your-skin/)\n\nWith an array of anti-inflammatory, antibiotic and calming properties, CBD may be an important part of keeping your heart healthy.\n\nPhoto credit: [El Payo](https://www.flickr.com/photos/62648476@N00/)\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? But you don’t have to ingest CBD to get its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and neuroprotective benefits. You can also [apply CBD topically](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/288186310) to heal wounds and abrasions on the skin, reduce the appearance of scars and treat a number of other skin issues.\n\n### The Benefits of CBD\n\nCBD is one of the most abundant compounds found in hemp, a variety of the _Cannabis sativa_ plant that contains little or no tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)—the plant’s psychoactive ingredient.\n\nBecause hemp contains only 0.3% THC by law at most, you can purchase hemp-derived CBD products just about anywhere from brick-and-mortar stores or order them online.\n\nRELATED: [5 PRODUCTS THAT’LL CHANGE YOUR MIND ABOUT HEMP-DERIVED CBD](https://hellomd.com/articles/5-products-thatll-change-your-mind-about-hemp-derived-cbd/)\n\nResearch continues to uncover the benefits of CBD for a long list of health conditions. So far, numerous studies have shown that this potent compound can:\n\n* Protect neural pathways in the brain from the effects of damage after trauma or stroke\n* Interfere with pain signaling to relieve pain and reduce dependence on pain medications\n* Ease symptoms of depression, PTSD and anxiety\n* Reduce the symptoms of neurological disorders like multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease\n* Help with the symptoms of gastrointestinal problems such as Crohn’s disease and irritable bowel syndrome\n* Reduce inflammation and heal infections\n* Reduce the proliferation of cancer cells in animal and cell studies\n \nCBD’s many benefits come from its effects on the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), a network of receptors found throughout the body and brain that responds both to natural cannabinoids produced by the body itself, and to cannabinoids from outside sources, mainly cannabis. The ECS, plays a major role in maintaining homeostasis, or keeping the many systems of the body working in balance.\n\nCBD acts not only on the many receptors in the brain and other parts of the body, but also on many other processes that are necessary for maintaining that balance. Some research even suggests that many disease states are a result of an endocannabinoid deficiency, so that consuming CBD in any of its many forms can bring cannabinoids to an optimal level for maintaining good health. \n\nHemp-derived CBD is available in many forms that provide the compound’s benefits including:\n\n* As a nutritional supplement similar to flaxseed oil\n* Taken sublingually, under the tongue \n* Delivered in CBD-infused edibles such as chocolates, gummies or drinks\n\nBut [CBD can also be used on the skin](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/04/170418094315.htm)\nin the form of salves, lotions or creams—and these methods also deliver its powerful healing benefits.\n\n### The Skin Is Part of the ECS \n\nThe skin is the largest organ of the body—and [skin is also a part of the endocannabinoid system](https://cbdinstead.com/blogs/cbd-for-general-health/cbd-for-cuts-and-scrapes), with a large network of receptors in its various layers. \n\nJust as they do in other systems and organs, the skin’s ECS receptors play a role in processes such as:\n\n* Cell growth and differentiation\n* Hormone production \n* Cellular integrity \n\nFor this reason, the skin’s ECS receptors can respond to CBD in the same way that receptors do in other parts of the body. And this means that CBD can be applied directly to the skin to treat issues such as wounds, scars and other conditions like acne.\n\n### CBD Can Heal Wounds & Abrasions\n\nCBD has documented anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antibacterial properties. So, folks can turn to the molecule to:\n\n* Relieve pain\n* Speed healing \n* Prevent infection after injuries from minor scrapes and cuts, burns and deeper wounds\n\nCBD-infused salves, ointments and lotions can be an effective first-aid treatment for minor wounds of all kinds, and it has also been used to support the healing of surgical wounds.\n\n### CBD May Reduce Scarring\n\nWhen the skin’s layers are damaged, the cells work to repair the injury with new collagen fibers. This produces scar tissue that looks and feels different from the surrounding skin. Scars can simply be unsightly, or they can interfere with normal functioning. \n\nCBD supports the regeneration of skin cells and also limits the spread of damaged cells. Another way CBD helps scars heal is by regulating collagen production. When you apply CBD directly to a scar, it can help soften and smooth it, which reduces the appearance and texture of the scar tissue.\n\n### CBD Can Help With Other Kinds of Skin Problems\n\nBecause it can promote and regulate collagen development, [CBD can also help with other kinds of skin issues](https://www.jaad.org/article/S0190-96221730308-0/fulltext):\n\n* [CBD-infused oils](https://www.hellolift.com/products?category=Tinctures) and ointments can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. \n* [Topical CBD](https://www.hellolift.com/products?category=Topicals) can also help reduce the inflammation and scarring of acne and skin breakouts caused by other disorders. \n* Some dermatologists say that applying CBD after treatments with Botox or other kinds of skin- repair procedures can help reduce inflammation and swelling as well as promote skin healing. \n\n### The Many Forms of Topical CBD\n\nYou can apply CBD to the skin in a variety of forms including:\n\n* Oils\n* Salves\n* Creams\n* Lotions \n* Sprays\n* Lip balm\n\nBut despite its many benefits for healing the skin, CBD itself, or other ingredients in CBD products, can trigger allergic reactions such as redness and itching. You may want to test your reaction to a new product by sampling it on a small area of the skin before using it to treat an injured or damaged area.\n\nCBD has a long list of healing properties that can benefit just about every organ of the body. Now, research reveals that CBD in a variety of topical forms can also heal and protect the largest organ of all: the skin. \n\nPhoto credit: [Coline Haslé](https://unsplash.com/@kohlun2000)\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? But few people are talking about how helpful CBD can be for another common problem: sexual dysfunction. \n\nThere are lots of things that can ruin the mood or cause problems during intimate moments. And while none of these problems are the fault of the person experiencing them, they can produce feelings of shame, guilt, frustration or depression—and they can deeply affect romantic partnerships. \n\nThere’s a lot of talk about how cannabis can help with sexual issues. But for those who don’t live in places where cannabis is legal, or who aren’t interested in the mind-altering effects of cannabis, there’s another solution. Thankfully, hemp-derived CBD can help. Studies are now showing that CBD can provide myriad benefits for folks having sexual difficulties. \n\n### Problems in the Bedroom\n\nIf you’re experiencing challenges with your sex life, you aren’t alone. Sexual dysfunctions are incredibly common, [affecting about 43% of women and 31% of men](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11122954). And there are many things that can go wrong. \n\nSome simply lack the desire to have sex, or have difficulty getting aroused. These issues can sabotage sex before it even gets started. Studies show that approximately 30% of women and 15% of men have hypoactive sex drives and simply don’t crave sex as much as the rest of the population. \n\nFor others, the problems come with the sex itself. Arousal is one big issue, and it affects both men and women—between 10–20% of people have a hard time getting aroused during a sexual encounter. \n\nFolks suffering from arousal issues may crave sex, but simply have difficulty becoming or staying aroused. For women, this can correlate to vaginal dryness and lack of pleasurable sensations, and for men the main symptom is erectile dysfunction. \n\nFor women, other common issues include painful sex or difficulty coming to orgasm, both of which affect 10–15% of women. \n\nMen seem to have the opposite problem. Their most common sexual complaint is premature ejaculation, which affects 30% of men. \n\n### How CBD Can Rekindle the Romance\n\nSex can certainly come with a lot of problems, but luckily CBD can help with many of them. In recent years, researchers have discovered various ways that CBD can help with sexual dysfunction. \n\nHere are the top four ways that CBD can help reawaken the romance and alleviate sexual difficulties.\n\n#### 1. Get Out of Your Head: CBD Lowers Anxiety \n\nWhen it comes to sexual difficulties, some issues are physical, but many have psychological components, too. Sex can be complicated, and many people have anxieties surrounding it. Maybe it’s anxiety for the act itself, or maybe it’s just that anxiety from unrelated issues are distracting you from the moment. Either way, anxiety can be a big problem and can really kill the mood. \n\nRELATED:[UNDERSTANDING HOW CBD CAN CALM YOUR ANXIETY](https://hellomd.com/articles/why-taking-cbd-daily-can-help-reduce-your-anxiety/)\n\nThankfully, many report that CBD is a big help, calming nerves and quieting the mind. And the research backs this up, showing that [CBD can lower anxiety](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/B9780128007563000971).\n\nNext time you’re feeling overwhelmed or distracted during sex, try some CBD in a fast-acting form like a [sublingual tincture](https://www.hellolift.com/products?category=Tinctures) or a [vape pen](https://www.hellolift.com/products?category=Vaporizers). It just may get you out of your head and into the moment. \n\n#### 2. Get Into Your Body: CBD Relieves Pain\n\nAnother common issue during sex is physical pain. There are many reasons why pain may happen during sex, but it can really impact your ability to enjoy the pleasurable sensations of intimacy. And painful sex may even contribute to other problems, like anxiety. \n\nIf pain during sex is your main problem, CBD can help you, too. Studies show that [CBD can reduce pain](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/10/181024163625.htm)—and many report feeling less pain when using CBD during sex. \n\nTry an inhaled or [edible CBD](https://www.hellolift.com/products?category=Edibles) option before your next sexual experience to avoid painful sensations. \n\n#### 3. Ramp Up Your Pleasure: CBD Increases Pleasurable Sensations \n\nPain and anxiety both play big roles in sexual dysfunction, but sometimes the problem is with inadequate feelings of pleasure.\n\nInterestingly, CBD can help with this as well. “CBD increases blood flow and nerve sensation, which can help enhance sexual pleasure and intensify orgasms for all parties,” explains [Dr. Evan Goldstein](http://drevangoldstein.com/), an expert in queer sexual health and wellness. This is good news for men and women alike, who may be able to increase pleasurable sensations and orgasms through CBD use. \n\nPerhaps this link is due to CBD’s interaction with our bodies’ natural endocannabinoids. [Certain fatty acids break down endocannabinoids, and CBD inhibits those same fatty acids. So, CBD increases the general level of endocannabinoids](https://books.google.me/books?id=R146BgAAQBAJ&pg=PA20&lpg=PA20&dq=estrogen+faah&source=bl&ots=XoE3mTYRYU&sig=D3OAGbvOExUpKz6FK-8gV9QIIyc&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiIqe6DyJPPAhWCjywKHQWtBcYQ6AEINjAF#v=onepage&q=estrogen%20faah&f=false). \n\nTo add to this picture, some endocannabinoids seem to be involved with sexual pleasure. Researchers recently discovered that [our bodies have elevated levels of certain endocannabinoids right after sex](https://www.jsm.jsexmed.org/article/S1743-60951731443-1/abstract) \n\nThe scientists working on this project believe that these endocannabinoids may be related to the pleasurable sensations of sex. So, CBD may enhance pleasurable sensations by elevating endocannabinoid levels. As CBD allows for the endocannabinoid system to process more of these endocannabinoids, it may actively increase pleasurable sensations. \n\n#### 4. Boost Your Arousal: CBD Aids Erectile Dysfunction\n\nWhile the increase in pleasurable sensations that CBD brings can help with overall arousal, \nCBD has another benefit for men suffering from erectile dysfunction. One big factor in erectile dysfunction is the presence of dioxins in the body. These toxins can lead to erectile dysfunction as well as low sperm count. \n\nInterestingly, some recent research suggests that CBD actually helps flush dioxins from the system, which may help treat erectile dysfunction directly. \n\nThere can be various reasons your sex life isn’t as fulfilling as you want it to be. But CBD may be able to ease sexual anxiety and pain, and that can go a long way to helping you get your mojo back. \n\nPhoto credit: [Jeremy Banks](https://unsplash.com/@jeremybanks)\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? While that temptation is understandable, you may want to reconsider. There’s actually a whole lot to like about winter, including some amazing outdoor activities like skiing, ice skating and sledding.\n\nAnd you may not realize it, but you can also take cannabidiol (CBD) to increase your enjoyment of these winter activities. Hemp-derived CBD won’t make you feel high like cannabis with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can. But what it can do is help relieve inflammation and pain, and this can make your winter activities a lot more fun.\n\nHere’s a quick rundown of four great outdoor winter activities and how you can use CBD to make them even better.\n\n### 1. Hitting the Slopes This Winter? Use CBD to Ease Your Sore Muscles Afterwards\n\nSnowboarding and skiing are among the most popular winter sports and for good reason. Whether you’re just starting out on the bunny slopes or you’re zooming down a black diamond run, skiing and snowboarding are absolutely thrilling.\n\nBut all of those thrills can be a bit daunting for novices, and they can leave your muscles feeling incredibly sore. Fortunately, CBD’s here to help.\n\nYou can use a [hemp-derived CBD vape pen](https://ondello.myshopify.com/blogs/articles/hellomd-staff-picks-our-favorite-cannabis-vape-products/), for example, to help keep you calm and focused as you prepare to tackle the slopes. \n\nAt the end of the day, when every muscle in your body is aching, use a [CBD topical cream, salve or spray](https://hellomd.com/articles/4-top-cbd-topicals-for-summer-skin-care/). Apply it to your sore muscles, and you’ll get fast-acting, targeted, anti-inflammatory pain relief.\n\n### 2. Cross-Country Skiing Is a Leisurely Winter Activity Made Better With CBD\n\nIf you prefer your skiing to be more steady state than adrenaline rush, then cross-country skiing is a great choice. You’ll get to appreciate the beauty of the outdoors while cruising along on your skis. \n\nPlus, a great advantage of cross-country skiing is that you don’t need a mountain or hill to do it. So long as you live in a state with snow on the ground, then you can find a cross-country skiing trail.\n\nBut make no mistake, cross-country skiing is hard work, and your entire body will be sore when you’re done. Luckily, CBD provides pain relief in many different forms. You can try a [fast-acting vaporizer with highly concentrated CBD oil](https://hellomd.com/tag/vaporizer/), which will help tackle aches and pains along with inflammation both during and after your workout.\n\nAnother option is a [hemp CBD-rich topical patch](https://www.hellolift.com/products/5b579d8002f1740001522f06/cbd-topical-hemp-patch). Just stick the patch wherever you know you’re going to be sore, and you can wear it under your clothes while you ski for long-lasting pain relief. \n\nRELATED: [4 HEMP DERIVED CBD PRODUCTS TO EASE PAIN](https://hellomd.com/articles/4-hemp-derived-cbd-products-to-ease-pain/)\n\n### 3. Ice Skating Is a Great Winter Activity, But Your Poor Legs Will Appreciate Some CBD Care\n\nIce skating is one of the most accessible of winter sports. Regardless of whether you’re using the skating rink in your backyard or you’re heading to Rockefeller Plaza, you can usually find somewhere nearby to strap on a pair of skates and start gliding along like you’re the next Michelle Kwan.\n\nOne thing that’s certain about ice skating, however, is that while it’s definitely fun when you’re doing it, it’ll leave you feeling very sore later on (especially if your skating skills leave you spending more time on your backside than on your blades). \n\nBefore you lace up your skates, opt for [CBD sublingual drops](https://www.hellolift.com/products?category=Tinctures) you can place directly under your tongue or add to your beverage before you hit the ice. Taking CBD before you go ice skating can be a good proactive way to help your body deal with inflammation that can develop after ice skating. \n\nThen after your skate, rub some [relieving CBD gel](https://www.hellolift.com/products/5b57a61802f1740001522f6e/relieve-gel) onto any spot that feels extra sore. And, because it comes in a squeeze or pump bottle, you can easily take it with you to the rink in a bag or purse.\n\n### 4. Pair CBD Products With Sledding for Wintertime Fun That Anyone Can Enjoy\n\nSledding is fun no matter how old you, are and it’s a great way to spend time with friends and family.
