And unfortunately, there’s no cure for them; there are only methods to dull the pain and speed up the healing process. \n\nIt may sound crazy and maybe you’d never guess it, but cannabidiol (CBD), a natural compound found in hemp, shows promise in easing cold sores and limiting cold sore outbreaks. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\n### What Is a Cold Sore?\n\nCold sores (also known as fever blisters) are made up of clusters of blisters filled with clear fluid. These patches happen in and around the mouth, especially in areas with a lot of mucus. \n\nWhen the blisters pop, the liquid oozes and dries into a layer of crust. While not particularly dangerous, they’re highly contagious, itchy and sensitive. Not to mention, because they occur on the face, it can make sufferers self-conscious. \n\n### How Do You Get a Cold Sore?\n\nA viral infection called herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) causes cold sores. It’s very closely related to the sexually transmitted disease herpes simplex virus (HSV-2), commonly just known as herpes. \n\nThe HSV-1 virus is spread from person to person through physical contact like kissing or touching. [Around 90% of American adults](https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/healthlibrary/conditions/adult/infectious_diseases/Oral_Herpes_22,OralHerpes) test positive for the virus, even if they’ve never had a cold sore. Sometimes people with the virus never have a cold sore outbreak. \n\nBut when a cold sore outbreak does occur, chances are it will happen again. That’s because the virus lies dormant in nerve cells in the skin, ready to agitate healthy cells again.\n\nThese outbreaks tend to happen once someone with the virus experiences heightened stress or whenever the immune system is suppressed such as when you’re sick or during a woman’s menstrual cycle. When this happens, the virus activates and begins to attack healthy cells nearby. \n\nIn response, the body sends in white blood cells that act as the defensive line for your blood and body. When a part of your body (in the case of cold sores, in and around and your mouth) is experiencing a viral attack, white blood cells rush in to fix the problem. \n\nHealing is the eventual result. But until then, the cellular-level warfare results in pain, inflammation and oozing blisters that typically last four to seven days, and sometimes longer. \n\n### Non-CBD Treatments for Cold Sores \n\nAs mentioned, there’s no cure for the HSV-1 virus. But there are some traditional ways to help ease the pain and inflammation during a cold sore outbreak. \n\n* Cold sores tend to heal after four to seven days. The simplest way to deal with a minor one is to ice it (without letting the ice make contact with the skin) and give it some time. Applying ice at the very first tingle of a cold sore can significantly decrease the length of its stay. \n* Viral medications can help the breakout clear faster and can sometimes prevent future outbreaks. \n* Over-the-counter creams like Zovirax, which are available at pharmacies, reduce the pain and keep the skin moisturized to avoid cracks and splitting. \n* Isopropyl alcohol applied to the cold sore with a cotton swab can help dry out the blisters and keep the area clean to avoid infection or irritation. \n\n### How CBD Is Well-Suited to Fighting Cold Sores\n\nCBD, a natural cannabinoid found in the hemp plant, can treat cold sores once they develop and limit future occurrences. CBD can’t cure the virus, but it can make it easier to manage. \n\nYou may never have considered CBD as an option for treating something like a cold sore, but it contains properties that address the main symptoms of a cold sore outbreak: pain and inflammation. \n\nIn a study from 2009, researchers concluded [CBD is effective at spurring healthy cell growth and limiting the pain and inflammation](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2828614/) often present during the healing process. \n\nOn a longer-term scale, CBD can also help prevent future HSV-1 outbreaks. The key to CBD’s success is its [immune-boosting capabilities]( https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/560c73fa62373500064d0000/cannabinoids-and-the-immune-system), which lead to antiviral effects. A properly functioning immune system can fight off active HSV-1 cells, and therefore future cold sore outbreaks, better than an embattled immune system can. \n\nBesides a compromised immune system, there’s one other common cold sore trigger that CBD can help reduce: stress. For many people suffering from reoccurring cold sores, stress can be a major instigator. Luckily, [CBD shows “therapeutic efficacy” for treating anxiety and stress](https://www.drugabuse.gov/about-nida/legislative-activities/testimony-to-congress/2015/biology-potential-therapeutic-effects-cannabidiol) in animal models, according to the National Institute of Health. \n\n### How to Treat Cold Sores With CBD\n\nIf you’re currently experiencing a cold sore outbreak, try applying [CBD oil](https://www.hellolift.com/products?category=Tinctures) directly to the skin using a clean cotton swab. This highly concentrated form of CBD will be even more effective if it’s in direct contact with the affected area. \n\nRELATED: [ALL ABOUT TOPICAL CBD & HOW IT SINKS INTO THE SKIN](https://hellomd.com/articles/all-about-topical-cbd-and-how-it-sinks-into-the-skin/)\n\nYou can also use a [CBD lip balm like this one from Elixinol](https://www.hellolift.com/products/5b57ad2d02f1740001522ff3/cbd-lip-balm) to help keep the area moisturized as it heals. \n\n### How CBD Can Help Prevent Cold Sores \n\nTo keep your immune system strong and stress at a manageable level, adding CBD to your daily routine is your best bet. And that makes sense: You can’t always cancel your plans because of a headache; Your boss still needs that presentation, and you still need to pick the kids up from school. \n\nOver-the-counter headache relief medicines are easily accessible, effective and are safe when taken as directed. But you aren’t meant to consume them in large quantities or consistently over a long period of time. According to the Food and Drug Administration, [acetaminophen, the active ingredient in headache medicines, can cause severe liver damage](https://www.fda.gov/forconsumers/consumerupdates/ucm168830.htm). \n\nIf you’ve got liver health and headaches on the mind, could cannabidiol (CBD) be a natural alternative for headache relief?\n\n### What Are the Main Types of Headaches? \n\nThere are two main types of headaches besides migraines: \n\n* **Tension headache:** This is the most common kind of headache. You’d be hard pressed to find a single American adult (especially women) who hasn’t experienced one. Physical and emotional stress can lead to tension headaches, but there are other causes that the scientific community has yet to fully understand. \n\n> Tension headaches feel like you’re wearing a sweatband of tension around your head, with intense pressure right above the eyebrows that can lead to pronounced nausea. They usually affect both sides of the head and occur sporadically, lacking a pattern.\n\n* **Cluster headache:** This type of headache is less common, but more prevalent in men in their late 20s. Rather than feeling the pain throughout the head, cluster headaches tend to affect only one side. Specifically, intense pain is felt around one eye. As a result, cluster headaches can cause eyes to tear up and become red. \n\n> Cluster headaches, as the name suggests, have more of a pattern than tension headaches do. They typically happen around the same time of day and year, and last for days or weeks at a time. While different from migraines, they can often be just as painful. Thankfully, they don’t tend to last as long as migraines do. \n\n### Can CBD Help Ease My Headaches?\n\nHeadaches have many causes, but the three main culprits are:\n\n* Inflammation in the brain \n* An inflamed neck\n* Physical or emotional stress \n\nTo understand how CBD—a natural and nonintoxicating compound found in the cannabis plant—could help relieve headaches, it’s important to focus on the endocannabinoid system (ECS).\n\nThe ECS is a complex system of receptors that exists naturally in mammals. Its main goal is keeping the body in balance (also known as homeostasis). CBD interacts with the ECS, acting like a key in a lock to produce physiological changes throughout the body. \n\nAnd now, many studies show CBD’s effectiveness in helping ease inflammation and pain. Specifically, one study shows [CBD’s potential in treating inflammation in acute tissue regions](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2828614/)—and that’s the exact type of inflammation thought to cause headaches. And as for stress-related headaches, CBD can help relieve stress and anxiety as well. \n\nRELATED: [CAN CBD HELP EASE STRESS?](https://hellomd.com/articles/can-cbd-help-ease-stress/)\n\n### Try These 3 CBD Products Next Time You Have a Headache\n\n#### 1. You’re not alone. Plenty of folks have tried CBD for various ailments with less than stellar results. That’s to be expected: No medicine works well for everyone 100% of the time. \n\nHowever, if you’ve had some luck with CBD but wish the results were a little better, you may want to think about adding a bit of beta-caryophyllene to your dosing regimen. This compound, which is found in many plants—including hemp, has powerful anti-inflammatory properties. And anecdotal evidence suggests that it can make CBD more effective. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\n### What Is Beta-Caryophyllene? \n\nBeta-caryophyllene is a terpene. These aromatic compounds are what give certain plants their characteristic smells and flavors. Think of the bright, citrusy aroma of a lemon—that’s due to the terpene limonene. Beta-caryophyllene on the other hand is responsible for the spicy, sharp flavors of many herbs like black pepper and clove, and it’s also found in beer. \n\nBut this terpene can offer up more than flavor. Recent studies have found that beta-caryophyllene is what’s called a [dietary cannabinoid](shttps://www.pnas.org/content/105/26/9099). This means that eating it via common foods can influence your endocannabinoid system (ECS). This network of receptors is located throughout the body, and it’s what CBD acts on to bring about its therapeutic effects. \n\nRELATED: [6 REASONS TO CONSUME HEMP CBD](https://ondello.myshopify.com/blogs/articles/6-reasons-to-consume-hemp-cbd/)\n\n### How Beta-Caryophyllene Works on the Endocannabinoid System\n\nWe likely know more about how beta-caryophyllene works on the ECS than we do about CBD. Time for a quick science lesson: Within the ECS, the two most well-studied receptors are CB1 and CB2. \n\nCB1 is a receptor that’s located throughout the body, but it’s especially prevalent in the brain. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main compound found in marijuana, attaches to the CB1 receptor, creating the characteristic high that’s often associated with cannabis. \n\nThe CB2 receptor is also located throughout the body, most notably in the nervous system, immune system and the gut. Research also says that CB2 is linked to the body’s inflammatory response. In conditions associated with high levels of inflammation like Parkinson’s disease, diabetes and endometriosis, the body tends to have more of these receptors. \n\nCBD can attach to CB2, but it often doesn’t, and we still don’t understand why. But what we do know is that beta-caryophyllene can attach to the CB2 receptor. And this is why scientists think that beta-caryophyllene has such powerful anti-inflammatory effects. By attaching to the CB2 receptor, beta-caryophyllene triggers a reduction of inflammation. \n\nBut given that both beta-caryophyllene and CBD are found in hemp, compounded with the fact that both are known to be potent anti-inflammatories, we should ask: What happens when you mix the two together? \n\n### Can Beta-Caryophyllene Enhance CBD’s Effects? \n\nThe idea that the terpenes found in hemp and cannabis can interact with both THC and CBD to produce greater effects than each individual compound could alone is known as the entourage effect. And it’s possible that this is what’s happening when beta-caryophyllene and CBD are combined. \n\n“The presence of beta-caryophyllene seems to allow CBD to either bind to those [CB2] receptors more efficiently, or more preferentially. It's doing something that’s allowing CBD to increase its efficacy,” says Jessica Peters, cannabis consultant and former CBD specialist at Harborside Health Center in Oakland, CA.\n\nJessica had suffered from debilitating pain from endometriosis since she was a teenager. When she entered the cannabis industry around 2009, CBD-rich medications were just beginning to appear on dispensary shelves. \n\nCurious about CBD’s properties, she tried some for herself and noticed a reduction in her endometriosis symptoms. She spent the next couple of years working closely with medical marijuana patients, while also digging deep into cannabinoid research.\n\nEventually she stumbled across a paper about the properties of beta-caryophyllene and began to encourage the patients she was working with to include the terpene in their diets. \n\nJessica began to notice that the patients who took her advice seemed to have more success with their medications. When she eventually got the opportunity to create her own CBD-rich medicines, she knew she wanted to add beta-caryophyllene to her formulation. \n\nThrough rigorous testing and with the help of about 90 human guinea pigs, Jessica was able to come up with a formulation that allowed many of her voluntary test subjects to cut their normal CBD dosage by nearly half. \n\nEven Jessica noticed a difference: When she stuck to a regimen of taking her special formulation three times a day, she found that her endometriosis symptoms disappeared completely. And when she stopped, she found that the symptoms would return. \n\n“We don't have the science yet to prove this, but it’s strongly my belief that [CBD with the addition of beta-caryophyllene has] regulated my hormonal functioning,” she says. “If I’m doing my protocol correctly, I don't need a lot of pain relief.”\n\nUnfortunately, Jessica’s special formulation is currently unavailable. Her company, Moxie Meds, was forced to close down in the wake of the 2017 fires in Santa Rosa, CA. But this doesn’t mean that we can’t learn a lesson from Jessica’s hard work. \n\n### How You Can Add More Beta-Caryophyllene to Your Diet\n\nFolks interested in upping the efficacy of their CBD medications can try adding foods rich in beta-caryophyllene to their diet—just like Jessica recommended to her patients when she first started to learn about the terpene’s benefits. \n\nBeta-caryophyllene naturally occurs in plants like: \n\n* Basil\n* Clove\n* Lavender \n* Rosemary \n* Oregano\n* Cinnamon\n* Black pepper\n\nBased off of Jessica’s experiences, it’s possible that adding these foods or the essential oils of these plants to your diet could help you see better results with CBD. If you decide to consume essential oils, just remember that they can be powerful—be sure to consult an appropriate essential oils book for dilution ratios.\n\nAnd as for dosage, this is unfortunately something folks will have to figure out via trial and error—much like figuring out which dosage of CBD works best for your own situation. \n\nPhoto credit: [Calum Lewis](https://unsplash.com/@calumlewis)\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? Prescription medications designed to target neurotransmitters in the brain that produce emotional responses like sadness, anger or happiness are usually what’s prescribed to treat these conditions. \n\nBut recent research reveals that imbalances in the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) could play a major role in developing mood disorders—and that the cannabis compound cannabidiol (CBD) may be as effective as pharmaceuticals are for treating some kinds of mood dysfunctions.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\n### What Causes Mood Disorders?\n\n[Mood disorders are a group of mental health conditions](https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/healthlibrary/conditions/mental_health_disorders/overview_of_mood_disorders_85,P00759) that are characterized by emotional states not consistent with current circumstances. They can result in persistent feelings of sadness, irritability or a sudden swing into manic euphoria. \n\nThis group includes all types of depressive disorders, such as:\n\n* **Major depressive disorder**: a condition of persistent sadness, low energy and trouble managing the demands of daily life\n* **Dysthymia**: a constant, chronic form of depression\n* **Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)**: a depression associated with winter and lack of sunlight\n* **Depressions related to medical conditions**: including chronic health conditions such as Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis\n* **Depressions related to medication use**\n\nBut another kind of mood disorder also includes periods of extreme euphoria and hyperactivity. For those with bipolar disorder, or a similar condition called cyclothymia, depression alternates with periods of excessive energy, feelings of extreme self-confidence and racing thoughts. \n\nBoth major depression and bipolar disorder can have mixed features, too. What this means is that a person with depression can also experience some aspects of mania, while a person with bipolar disorder can have some ongoing symptoms of depression.\n\nMany factors contribute to the development of mood disorders, including genetics, trauma and even environmental conditions, such as in seasonal affective disorder. But in all of these disorders, brain chemistry plays a key role. \n\nDepressive states are associated with low levels of the feel-good chemicals serotonin and dopamine. Meanwhile, the manic states of bipolar and cyclothymic disorder can be linked to excessive amounts of serotonin and the excitatory neurotransmitter norepinephrine.\n\nMedications aimed at restoring balance in the brain’s signaling systems are what’s generally prescribed for mood disorders. Several types of antidepressant medications target serotonin and norepinephrine. These include: \n\n* **Serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs)**: a class of antidepressants that block or slow the reuptake, or reabsorption, of serotonin and noradrenaline, so that more of these chemicals are available to the brain\n* **Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)**: a type of drug that specifically blocks the reabsorption of serotonin\n* **Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)**: a group of medications that block the action of a brain enzyme called monoamine oxidase, which breaks down serotonin so that less of it’s available to the brain\n* **Tricyclic antidepressants and mood stabilizers**: these medications include lithium, which can help level out the mood swings of bipolar and cyclothymic disorders\n\nMany of the medications used to treat mood disorders work, because they target the production and uptake of serotonin, noradrenaline and dopamine. But CBD also affects the signaling of those chemicals in some surprising ways. And this is why a growing body of research now suggests that it can help people with depressive mood disorders to reduce their intake of prescription medications or even stop taking them altogether.\n\nRELATED: [HOW CANNABIS CAN HELP MANAGE DEPRESSION](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-cannabis-can-help-manage-depression/)\n\n### The Endocannabinoid System Keeps Moods in Balance\n\nHumans and other mammals have an extensive network of ECS receptors that respond both to cannabinoid-like chemicals produced by the body itself and to cannabinoids from other sources, mainly from the cannabis plant. \n\nThe [ECS is essential in maintaining homeostasis](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23261685), or making sure that all of the many subsystems in the body are working in balance. This includes the [processes for regulating mood and emotion]( https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21916860).\n\nSo far, scientists have discovered two ECS receptors, which are found throughout the body and brain. They’re triggered by two natural cannabinoids, which produce feelings of calm and relaxation: \n\n* Anandamide \n* 2-AG\n\nBut the body also responds to the two most abundant cannabinoids in the cannabis plant: CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). \n\n### CBD Works in Many Ways to Regulate Mood \n\nTHC, which is responsible for the psychoactive high loved by many marijuana consumers, directly activates cannabinoid receptors in the brain. \n\nBut [CBD works in very different ways](https://www.projectcbd.org/science/cannabis-pharmacology/how-cbd-work\\). This cannabinoid [acts on multiple pathways in the brain](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30515077) to affect the activity of the essential mood-regulating chemicals, serotonin and norepinephrine.\n\n### CBD Affects Serotonin Receptors\n\nThe serotonin receptor 5HT1A is one of a family of 5HT receptors that affect a long list of processes including:\n\n* Anxiety\n* Appetite\n* Sleep \n* Addiction\n\nSerotonin activates this receptor. And so does CBD, thereby producing the same effects. In this way, CBD can supplement the brain’s own production of serotonin and encourage the calming, mood-lifting effects of this feel-good chemical.\n\n### CBD Supports GABA Production\n\nGamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the brain’s main inhibitory neurotransmitter. This means that it can damp down the effects of excitatory chemicals like norepinephrine and cortisol to produce a calming effect. CBD is a positive modulator for GABA, so that it supports the production and expression of GABA in the brain.\n\n### CBD Supports Natural Cannabinoids\n\nAnandamide is a natural cannabinoid that promotes feelings of well-being and calm. And researchers now believe it may be partly responsible for the runner’s high that comes from exercise. But its presence in the brain is usually short-lived, because it’s broken down quickly by another chemical called FAAH. \n\nCBD inhibits the action of FAAH, so that anandamide is broken down more slowly and remains available in the brain for a longer time.\n\nRELATED: [EATING ANANDAMIDE: THE BLISS MOLECULE](https://hellomd.com/articles/eating-anandamide-the-bliss-molecule/)\n\n### Treating Mood Disorders With CBD\n\nBecause CBD so strongly supports the production of mood-boosting neurotransmitters, particularly serotonin, research suggests that for some people with depressive mood disorders, it can be as effective as prescription medications are. \n\nBut HelloMD’s Dr. Richard Kim cautions that for those very reasons, CBD isn’t appropriate for people whose mood disorders include manic episodes.\n\n“CBD mimics serotonin,” says Dr. Kim, “and elevated serotonin is associated with triggering or worsening a manic episode. Bipolar depression, cyclothymia, major depressive disorder with mixed features or any condition that involves mania or hypomania should not be treated with CBD.”\n\nBut folks with mood disorders that don’t have a manic component can safely take CBD in any form—smoking, vaping, sublingually or with edibles. Since cannabis can affect people in different ways at different dosages, you may need to experiment a bit to find the dosage that works for you. It’s wise to start small and observe the point at which your symptoms improve.\n\nSome people prefer to take CBD alongside their prescription medications as a way to reduce their consumption of those drugs as well as reduce their side effects and risks. According to Dr. Kim, CBD is safe to take with most antidepressants, but the dose depends on the class of drugs you’re taking. \n\nAbout 20 mg of CBD three times a day can work well with drugs from the SSRI and SNRI classes. But if you’re taking tricyclic antidepressants or MAOIs, Dr. Kim recommends smaller and more frequent doses of CBD, such as 5 mg three or four times a day. As always, it may take some time to find the right combination that works for you.\n\nMood disorders can have many causes, but research reveals that typical symptoms such as sadness, loss of interest in life and low energy arise from imbalances in the brain’s handling of serotonin and other mood-related chemicals. \n\nBecause CBD supports the activity of these mood-boosting chemicals, it has the power to ease the symptoms of many different kinds of mood disorders.\n\nPhoto credit: [Brunel Johnson](https://unsplash.com/@brunels_world)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. But why should humans be the only ones to reap the benefits? Dogs can have CBD, too. And so can your cat, bird, bunny, horse and whatever else you may have in your menagerie.\n\nThis is because all vertebrates (animals with a backbone) have what’s called an endocannabinoid system. This network of receptors is located throughout the body. And it’s what CBD works on to bring about its myriad benefits. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nSo what’s CBD good for when it comes to your pet? Just as in humans, CBD can be used to:\n\n* Quell inflammation \n* Ease pain \n* Reduce stress \n\nWhile there’s little research to back up CBD’s effects on our animal companions, the anecdotal evidence is promising. Heidi Hill, the owner of Holistic Hound, a pet store in Berkeley, CA, which focuses on dog and cat nutrition, says the addition of CBD to her supplement line has been eye opening. \n\n“[CBD] is a game changer as far as anything that I've ever seen in 15 years of doing this,” she says. “It’s replaced a lot of our supplements. … We specialize in having herbal remedies, homeopathic remedies or other types of food supplements, and nothing has ever come close to the kinds of testimonials that we get for CBD.”\n\nMost of Heidi’s customers use CBD for anxiety and pain, though she’s received feedback that her products help with a wide array of symptoms. In fact, CBD had such an impact on the lives of her clientele that she created [her own line of hemp-derived CBD treats and tinctures](https://hellomd.com/articles/nourish-to-flourish-holistic-hound-hemp-oil-products/).\n\nIf you’re still on the fence about giving your pet CBD, we’ve listed a few reasons below detailing how this versatile compound could benefit your pet. \n\n### 1. CBD Can Ease Anxiety in Animals \n\nIt’s not just humans that suffer from anxiety, your pet can feel it, too. You may have noticed anxious behavior when you leave the house, have guests over or take your pet to an unfamiliar location. Lots of things can trigger anxiety in pets, and it can be hard to treat both the symptoms and root causes. \n\nMuch like in humans, treatment for pet anxiety usually involves antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and behavioral therapy. But similar to humans, sometimes these methods aren’t enough—or the side effects make treatment difficult.\n\nThis is where CBD can help. \n\nPreclinical evidence suggests that [CBD can ease anxiety in humans](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs13311-015-0387-1), and it may be able to do the same thing for your pet.\n\n“I’m very happy with the CBD treats,” writes Mary, a customer using Heidi’s products for her dog, whose anxiety causes her to cry at night. “Both my dog and I are getting more sleep,” she adds.\n\nSo, if you’ve got a pet who suffers from separation anxiety, or one that simply dislikes travel or visits to the vet, it’s possible that CBD can help make both of your lives easier. \n\nRELATED: [USING CBD TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR PET’S ANXIETY](https://hellomd.com/articles/using-cbd-to-take-care-of-your-pets-anxiety/)\n\n### 2. CBD’s Anti-Inflammatory Properties Can Soothe Your Pet's Itchy Skin\n\nThere are lots of reasons your pet can feel itchy—whether it’s allergies to flea bites, contact dermatitis or even inflammatory skin disease. CBD may be able to help with any of these issues because of its powerful anti-inflammatory properties. \n\nHumans usually like to use topical CBD for skin issues, but this may be harder to do on your furry friend. The good news is that your pet can reap the benefits of CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties by simply ingesting it. \n\nOne of Heidi’s customers started out using her CBD tinctures for anxiety, but soon found that CBD provided her pup with numerous benefits in addition to a calm demeanor. \n\n“She is all around more comfortable and confident and has less itching,” writes Suzanne, the customer, in a testimonial. \n\n### 3. CBD Could Help a Pet With Gastrointestinal Issues \n\nWhether your pet has a longstanding gastrointestinal issue or just ate something they weren’t supposed to, there’s a good chance that CBD can help them feel better. \n\nResearchers are currently studying how CBD’s anti-inflammatory effects can help with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), and [the results are promising](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/ptr.4781). There’s already plenty of anecdotal evidence that suggests CBD, as well as its psychoactive counterpart tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), can help humans with IBD.\n\nAnd even if your pet has a normally healthy gut, it won’t stop them from eating things they shouldn’t—and getting sick as a result. It’s possible that a bit of CBD can help ease your pet’s nausea and thus boost their appetite when their stomach’s upset. \n\n### 4. CBD Can Ease Your Pet’s Pain\n\nMost of us are probably already familiar with CBD’s pain-fighting properties, which stem from its ability to quell inflammation and change the way our brains perceive pain. But these effects aren’t limited to humans. \n\nWhether its swelling from a recent surgery or aching from arthritis, CBD can help ease your pet’s pain—and it may help them relax and prevent them from getting a bit of cabin fever due to their immobility. And as is the case with humans, it could reduce the amount of prescription medications your pet needs to take, too. \n\n### A Few Tips for Folks Who Want to Give Their Pet CBD\n\nIf you’re thinking of giving your pet CBD, keep the following things in mind : \n\n1. **Just like in humans, each animal’s endocannabinoid system is unique.** And to make things even more challenging, veterinarians aren’t allowed to recommend CBD to their patients. This means you’ll have to decide if CBD is right for your pet and monitor their dosage. Start at a low dose and gradually increase until you see a desired effect. \n\n2. **If you want to use CBD to help your anxious pet, try giving CBD to them in advance of stressful events.** If your pet suffers from separation anxiety, give them a dose of CBD 30 minutes to an hour before you leave. The same rules applies to airplane or car travel as well as visits to the vet. \n\n3. **You may not see effects from CBD right away.** CBD tends to build up in the body, so more apparent effects could take a while to show up. This is something to keep in mind if you’re looking to use CBD to help your pet with long-standing issues like discomfort from allergies and digestive issues. \n\n4. Whenever you buy CBD oil, be on the lookout for: \n\n>* **CBD oil that’s been lab tested** to ensure that it’s free of pesticides and residual solvents. All reputable companies have their products third-party tested, and most will say so on their labels and website. \n\n>* **Products that source their hemp from the U.S. or Europe.** Avoid ones that use hemp from China and Indonesia. Hemp from China and Indonesia is often of lower quality because its grown in soils that contain heavy metals and other chemicals. And since hemp tends to suck these compunds out of the soil, the end product may contain these potentially harmful ingredietns as well. \n\n>* **Tinctures that contain just CBD oil and simple carrier oil** like coconut oil, olive oil or medium chain triglyceride (MCT) oil. You’ll definitely want to avoid tinctures that contain alcohol, as most pets—especially cats—hate the taste. There are lots of great CBD products that cater to pets, like [Holistic Hound’s treats and tinctures](https://hellomd.com/articles/using-cbd-to-take-care-of-your-pets-anxiety/). But you may be able to give your pet some CBD from your own stash—just make sure your CBD oil doesn’t contain any essential oils or other ingredients that may not sit well with them.\n\nPhoto credit: [Rebekah Howell](https://unsplash.com/@rebekahhowell00)\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? But just as quickly as these products hit the scene, they fade into the crowded graveyard of short-lived health and wellness trends. \n\nWith so many fads out there, the question that inevitably comes up is: Are there any natural ways to increase metabolism and burn fat? \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nYou’ve probably heard of cannabidiol (CBD)—a nonintoxicating cannabinoid found in cannabis—and its ability to help fight a variety of conditions like:\n\n* Intractable seizures\n* Anxiety\n* Chronic pain \n* Inflammation\n\nBut have you considered CBD to help speed up your metabolism? According to HelloMD’s co-founder Pamela Hadfield, adding CBD to her daily routine gave her metabolism the boost it needed to get rid of some stubborn baby weight hanging around after her last pregnancy. \n\nRELATED: [CBD OIL VS. HEMP OIL ](https://hellomd.ca/articles/cbd-oil-vs-hemp-oil-is-one-better-than-the-other/)\n\nAnecdotal evidence has long been the guiding light for cannabis-related research. So, what do researchers have to say about the metabolism-boosting claims around CBD?\n\n### What Is Metabolism?\n\nBefore diving into relevant research on CBD’s ability to influence metabolism, let’s get the facts straight. What is metabolism? And why is boosting metabolism integral to weight loss?\n\nYour body needs a certain level of energy to perform basic functions, like breathing and pumping blood. Metabolism is a combination of metabolic processes that create this energy. Metabolism converts food and nutrients into energy and rids the body of waste products. It’s responsible for delivering nutrients on the cellular level, which go on to create energy for muscles, nerves and cells. \n\nWhen people discuss metabolism in the context of weight loss, they’re referring to the rate at which the body burns calories into energy. Everyone’s metabolic rate is different. And that rate can even vary day to day, depending on what activities you’re doing and what you’re eating. \n\nGenerally speaking, the faster the metabolism, the better for weight loss. The more calories that can be burned in the form of energy, the easier it is to maintain a healthy weight. And while some aspects of metabolism are immutable, based on genetics and age, there are some natural ways to boost the body’s metabolic rate. \n\n### How the Endocannabinoid System Influences Metabolism \n\nThe endocannabinoid system (ECS) is the network in the body that processes cannabinoids like CBD. It does this via an intricate system of two types of receptors called CB1 and CB2. Cannabinoids interact with these receptors like a lock and key. \n\nThese receptors are found throughout the body, including in the brain and digestive tract, and influence many physiological processes like metabolism and appetite. Specifically, the ECS is thought to aid in transporting nutrients and storing energy.\n\nBut not all of the ECS’s influence on metabolism is positive. Over-activation of the ECS, specifically CB1 receptors, [can actually slow metabolism down](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2228268/). The CB1 receptors can be over-activated by consuming too much of certain cannabinoids, like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or cannabinol (CBN). This can lead to increased:\n\n* Belly fat\n* Appetite\n* Blood sugar\n* Blood pressure \n\nLuckily, not all cannabinoids have this effect. \n\nRELATED: [HAVING TROUBLE SLEEPING? TRY NON-PSYCHOACTIVE CBN](https://hellomd.com/articles/having-trouble-sleeping-try-non-psychoactive-cbn/)\n\n### Using CBD to Boost Metabolism\n\nIf you want to speed up metabolism with a natural supplement, CBD is an increasingly promising option for a number of reasons. First, CBD can actually keep CB1 receptors from being over-activated. That’s because CBD is a CB1 antagonist, meaning it keeps CB1 receptors from activating and can work to rev up metabolism as a result. \n\nThere are some other interesting ways CBD works to boost metabolism. A study conducted by Korean researchers and published in the _Journal of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry_ observed CBD’s effect on immature fat cells. The researchers concluded that [CBD boosts metabolism in three ways](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11010-016-2702-5): \n\n1. Increasing the body’s ability to burn calories by boosting the activity of the mitochondria in cells \n2. Decreasing the availability of proteins that are necessary to generate fat cells \n3. Aiding in the browning of fat by stimulating genes and proteins to more effectively break down and oxidize fat cells \n\n### CBD & Fat Browning: What You Need to Know \n\nThe final point in the list above is one of the most interesting aspects of CBD for boosting metabolism and aiding in weight loss. \n\nDid you know not all fat is unhealthy? Did you even know there were different types of fat? If not, no worries. Even scientific researchers are just beginning to really dive into the difference between white and brown fat. What’s fueling this new interest on the topic is something called fat browning.\n\nWhite-colored fatty tissue stores energy in the body. This is the type of fat that’s associated with negative health outcomes, like increased risk of heart disease and diabetes. \n\nOn the other hand, brown fatty tissue burns energy and can actually increase weight loss. According to a study from the _Diabetes & Metabolism Journal_, [brown fat can increase energy expenditure and produce heat, limiting weight gain](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4768046/).\n\nAnd the more brown fat in your body, the more effective it is. Researchers from this study go so far as to say that brown fat is a “good candidate organ to treat obesity and its related disorders.” \n\nLuckily, it’s possible to turn white fat into brown fat. Researchers know that through a process of activating immune cells in the fat and/or cold exposure, white fatty tissue can turn into its more effective sibling.\n\nBut as the study referenced above suggests, [CBD can also turn white fat into brown fat](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11010-016-2702-5), boosting metabolism, burning more energy and limiting weight gain. \n\nWhile more research is always needed, the studies that do exist on the topic of CBD and metabolism are promising. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is associated with [a type of depression colloquially known as the “winter blues.”](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/conditions/seasonal-affective-disorder) Many of its symptoms mirror the kinds of feelings—both physical and psychological—that people experience during other types of depressive episodes. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nAccording to _Psychology Today_, SAD symptoms may include:\n\n* Feelings of hopelessness and sadness\n* A tendency to oversleep\n* A change in appetite, especially a craving for sweet or starchy foods\n* Weight gain\n* A heavy feeling in the arms or legs\n* Low energy levels\n* Fatigue\n* Difficulty concentrating\n* Irritability\n* Avoiding social situations\n\nUnlike other types of depressive disorders, the symptoms related to SAD are specifically associated with the onset of the winter season. We spoke to HelloMD’s Dr. Richard Kim to discuss SAD and how to use cannabidiol (CBD) to help modulate its symptoms.\n\n### Seasonal Affective Disorder: A Serotonin Issue\n\n“The causes of SAD aren’t fully understood. However, recent research suggests that people with SAD regulate serotonin differently in comparison to others,” Dr. Kim notes. \n\nFolks with depression usually understand the important role of the serotonin reuptake system in the brain. Those with an improperly functioning serotonin reuptake mechanism may be more vulnerable to seasonal depressive symptoms. \n\n“In a 2016 study, researchers found that those with SAD had increased serotonin transporter (SERT) activity during the autumn and winter months, in comparison to those without SAD. Higher SERT activity results in lower amounts of serotonin available to bind the subtype of serotonin receptor (5-HT1A) responsible for serotonin's antidepressant effects,” Dr. Kim explains. \n\nDoctors and researchers have prescribed antidepressants for decades to help with the regulation of the serotonin system. \n\n“Restoring activity in serotonin pathways by increasing the serotonin available to bind the 5-HT1A receptor in the brain is how antidepressant medications like SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are thought to alleviate anxiety and depression. In fact, these medicines do so by inhibiting the aforementioned SERT,” says Dr. Kim.\n\n### How CBD Affects Serotonin Levels in the Brain\n\nCountless cannabis consumers have been forced to rely on anecdotal, word-of-mouth evidence to help treat a variety of conditions. For many, taking cannabis containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) doesn’t provide relief for depressive or anxiety-related conditions. In fact, for some, psychoactive cannabis has been found to increase levels of psychological discomfort. \n\nHowever, with the explosion in the use of hemp-derived CBD, which doesn’t make consumers experience a high like THC does, studies are confirming that [CBD can be a powerful tool for coping with both anxiety and depression](http://baltimorepostexaminer.com/how-does-cbd-oil-work-for-depression/2018/10/12).\n\n“Several recently published studies suggest that CBD reduces depression and anxiety symptoms similarly to how SSRIs do. \n\n“However, CBD does so not by increasing the serotonin available to bind 5-HT1A receptors as SSRIs do, but by mimicking serotonin's action at the receptor. In scientific terms, CBD is what's called a 5-HT1A receptor agonist,” Dr. Kim explains. \n\nA 2016 report published in _Neuropharmacology_ stated that [CBD use induced “rapid-acting antidepressant-like effects” in people suffering with depression](http://www.seattleweekly.com/food/how-weed-can-help-fight-seasonal-effective-disorder/). \n\n### Taking CBD to Ease SAD\n\nBefore beginning any cannabis-related treatments, it’s crucial to receive a correct diagnosis from your doctor. Depressive symptoms for conditions such as SAD can mimic symptoms of other serious conditions such as thyroid disorders. \n\nDoctors treating patients for SAD often recommend a combination of medical and lifestyle modifications, which can include:\n\n* A healthy diet\n* Light therapy\n* Counseling\n* Prescription medication \n* Exercise\n\nRELATED: [HOLISTIC WAYS TO EASE DEPRESSION & ANXIETY](https://hellomd.com/articles/holistic-ways-to-ease-depression-and-anxiety/)\n\nAnd most importantly: It’s essential to seek medical attention if your depressive symptoms include thoughts of self-harm or suicide; in this case, receiving immediate medical care is imperative.\n\nWhen taking CBD to treat any condition, finding the correct dosage is important. Many people don’t derive the benefits of cannabis therapy simply because they aren’t taking enough CBD to affect their condition. This is why it’s important to secure a medical cannabis recommendation from a trusted, cannabis-knowledgeable doctor like Dr. Kim.\n\n“For most patients, I recommend taking 10–20 milligrams of CBD, two to three times per day, in addition to light therapy,” says Dr. Kim. \n\n“People with SAD may also produce less vitamin D, which is also believed to play a role in serotonin activity. A 1999 study concluded that improvement in vitamin D levels was significantly associated with improvement in a patient’s depression scale. I recommend taking 5,000 international units of vitamin D3—not D2—each day,” Dr. Kim advises.\n\nIt’s also essential to use CBD products that are produced by trusted sources. You should also do your own research to determine the type of CBD product that fits your lifestyle and personal preference. \n\nFor those on the go, a single-serve candy may be the easiest way to incorporate CBD into your wellness regime. For others, a sublingual spray provides the fastest delivery system for rapid symptom reduction. The best part of experimenting with CBD therapy is that there are virtually no side effects. And there’s no evidence that the use of CBD interferes with the use of antidepressant medications. \n\nWith the passing of the winter solstice, every day lengthens as the light returns. But if you’re still feeling under a dark cloud of seasonal depression, don’t be afraid to ask your doctor if CBD may gently and safely ease your winter blues.\n\nPhoto credit: [Diana Parkhouse](https://unsplash.com/@ditakesphotos)\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? It’s marked by an increase in adrenaline and cortisol, leading to an elevated heart rate and short bursts of energy. \n\nIn the proper settings, stress can be an incredibly motivating tool. The “fight or flight” response is one we’re all familiar with. Stress is intended to urge a person or animal into action to get us out of dangerous situations. \n\nOnce we evade or neutralize the perceived threat, stress should melt away and elevated hormone levels should return to normal. \n\nBut if you don’t properly manage stress, it can become a chronic issue. If someone is under constant stress, their health and relationships tend to suffer as a result. \n\nChronic stress can even [change both the brain’s structure and chemistry](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0014299908000277). It can lead to a variety of symptoms, including, but not limited to: \n\n* Low energy\n* Volatile mood shifts\n* Insomnia\n* Digestion issues\n* Decreased sexual drive\n* Tense muscles\n* Inability to focus\n* Disorganization \n\nRELATED: [3 CBD PRODUCTS TO HELP YOU DE-STRESS](https://hellomd.com/articles/top-3-cbd-products-to-help-you-de-stress/) \n\n### Does CBD Alleviate Stress?\n\nThere’s a virtually endless list of stressors: \n\n* Finances\n* Chronic pain\n* Interpersonal relationships\n* Work\n* A dangerous situation\n\nSome of these scenarios are short-lived. Others, like financial or social stress, are often ongoing issues. \n\nPrescription medication is often given to people with chronic stress or anxiety. But according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, “[CBD has shown therapeutic efficacy in a range of animal models of anxiety and stress](https://www.drugabuse.gov/about-nida/legislative-activities/testimony-to-congress/2015/biology-potential-therapeutic-effects-cannabidiol), reducing both behavioral and physiological measures of stress and anxiety.” \n\nIn one animal study, researchers gave CBD to 32 rodents. Of those treated, [31 experienced anti-anxiety effects](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4604171/). \n\nAnd in one of the limited human studies on CBD and anxiety, a group of people with social anxiety took CBD before a simulated public speaking performance. The researchers of this study conclude that CBD shows, [“promising indication of a rapid onset of therapeutic effect” in patients with social anxiety](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3079847/). \n\n### How to Take CBD for Stress\n\nThere are a few different ways to ingest CBD. You can take it via a:\n\n* Tincture\n* Topical\n* Vaporizer\n* Capsule \n* Edible \n\nSo which method is best to ease stress? It’s important to consider the cause of stress when deciding which CBD consumption method is the right one for you. \n\nPain can be a major stressor. If you’re experiencing pain in a specific area, and it’s causing chronic stress, a CBD topical can provide targeted relief. Jessica Tonani, co-founder of [Basic Jane](https://www.hellolift.com/brands/5b5a158ecad6a4000967d6d5/basic-jane), explains that chronic pain can make it very hard for people to turn their brain off at night. \n\nAccording to Jessica, [Basic Jane’s Relax products](https://www.hellolift.com/products/5beca4f22ae500a0ad82dfff/relax-pain-spray) have received “a lot of great feedback from customers that like to use these products for pain relief before bed. They note it not only relieves their discomfort, but also helps their brain relax into a restful night sleep.” \n\nShe credits Basic Jane’s special essential oil blend—including lavender and ylang- ylang—which promotes relaxation and works synergistically with CBD. \n\nFor daily maintenance to battle chronic stress, adding a [CBD edible](https://www.hellolift.com/products/5b57ad3f02f1740001522ff7/cured-spices) to your morning routine can help. Edibles take longer to work since they have to pass through the digestive system, so they can keep you medicated for a longer period of time. \n\nIf you want fast-acting relief for acute stress, a [CBD vaporizer pen](https://www.hellolift.com/products/5bb53ed015dd427039a0a351/relax-vape-pen) or [tincture](https://www.hellolift.com/products?category=Tinctures) may be a better bet. With vaporizers and tinctures, the CBD gets into your system much quicker. A vape pen will take effect almost immediately, while a CBD tincture kicks in after about 15–20 minutes. \n\nCBD shows real promise for reducing stress, but it may take trial and error to find the best method and dose for you. Regardless of the consumption method you decide to try, always start with a small amount (5–10 mg) first. Slowly work your way up from there over the course of a week or two. \n\nPhoto credit: [it's me neosiam](https://www.pexels.com/@neo8iam)\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? He also serves as the medical director of [Elixinol](https://www.hellolift.com/brands/5b5a2815cad6a4000967d6d6/elixinol), maker of high-quality, lab-tested CBD products. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link)\n\n### What Are the Most Common Causes of Lack of Focus or Attention? \n\nAccording to Col. Blair, looking for the cause of diminished focus isn’t the right question. He says, “Lack of attention or focus is not a condition,” but rather a symptom that something in the body is out of balance. And there are many things that could be causing inattention. \n\nThings that can negatively affect the ability to focus include; \n\n* Inflammation\n* Diet\n* Stress\n* Attention deficit disorders\n* Lack of sleep \n\nAttention deficit disorders, a symptom of which is inability to focus for an extended period of time, are incredibly common. A report from 2015 shows a [43% spike in attention deficit/hyperactive disorder diagnoses in school children since 2003](https://publichealth.gwu.edu/content/new-report-finds-43-percent-increase-adhd-diagnosis-us-schoolchildren-0). These disorders are very often treated with addictive prescription stimulants like Adderall.\n\nBut there’s hope for a holistic alternative: CBD. \n\n### How CBD Can Help Promote Focus\n\nCol. Blair explains that the [ECS is present throughout the body](https://hellomd.ca/articles/want-to-improve-your-health-make-sure-your-endocannabinoid-system-is-balanced/). As such, it’s involved in regulating everything from sleep to mood to metabolism. \n\nBut specifically in the brain, CBD works to “regulate mood, memory, cognitive focus and task orientation as well as reducing neuroinflammation and enhancing sleep.” Col. Blair goes on to sum it all up by saying, “CBD offers a whole person approach to restore life and ECS balance as opposed to single targeted conventional medicine.” \n\nThere are many different kinds of CBD. According to Col. Blair, all of them can be effective, but there are certain consumption methods that are more immediately bioavailable. That is, a CBD tincture or vaporizer will provide more instantaneous results. \n\nCol. Blair says, “For my patients, it’s most important to find the serving size that creates desired outcomes and let the patient choose a preferred delivery method. Vaping delivers CBD to the anxious brain in 10 seconds. Sublinguals deliver CBD in three minutes, but swallowed capsules take one to two hours.” \n\n### CBD Products That Can Help Improve Focus\n\nIf you don’t know where to begin when it comes to taking CBD to improve focus, here are a few products to help get you started: \n\n* **Focus Vape Pen by Select:** For fast-acting effects, a CBD vaporizer will be the best bet. Specifically, he’s received reports of patients feeling that their “fog has lifted” and they can follow a topic or complex ideas with greater clarity. And because this is a tincture, it’s absorbed sublingually—so that means quick effects for you. \n\nRELATED: [ELIXINOL: HEMP CBD FOR BETTER HEALTH AND WELLNESS](https://hellomd.com/articles/elixinol-hemp-cbd-for-better-health-and-wellness/)\n\n* **Wildflower CBD Capsules:** These [Wildflower CBD capsules](https://www.hellolift.com/products/5b57756b02f1740001522cb5/cbd-capsules) are a fantastic option for someone who may be more comfortable with a set, consistent dose or for someone who doesn’t like the idea of inhaling their CBD. It’s an incredibly convenient way to consume CBD—simply add a Wildflower CBD capsule to your morning vitamin routine and you’re set for the day.\n\n Just remember that capsules do have a longer onset period of up to one or two hours. If you need more immediate relief, Col. Blair says to bite the capsule in half and hold the liquid under your tongue like you would with a tincture; you’ll feel the effects much faster this way. \n\n* **Cured Spices from Cured Nutrition:** We’d be remiss not to add [Cured CBD-infused spices](https://hellomd.com/articles/cured-nutrition-finding-balance-with-hemp-cbd/) to this list. I must admit, at first, I wasn’t a fan. If you have naturally oily skin like me, the thought of putting more oil on your face gives you nightmares about the skin issues you thought you’d left behind in high school. \n\nBut even if your skin is on the oily side, a good face oil can lock in moisture, which is particularly important during winter, and if you’re regularly exposed to sun and wind. It’s not the same kind of oil that clogs your pores. So if you use the right carrier oil for your skin, it won’t make you break out.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nA great way to get even more bang for your buck when it comes to a rehydrating oil is to add some hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) oil. CBD has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties so can help with red, dry and acne-prone skin. \n\n### Choose the Elements of Your CBD Face Oil Wisely\n\nBefore we get to the recipe, let’s talk ingredients. There are several ways to customize your CBD face oil to fit your skin’s needs, so you should consider all of the various options for each element of the oil:\n\n* **Carrier oil:** The carrier oil forms the base of your CBD face oil and will make up the bulk of your final product. You’ll want to choose an oil that targets your skin concerns. Some options are:\n\n * Coconut oil, which is a good choice if you have dry skin. \n * Caster oil is a great carrier oil if you’ve got acne-prone skin. \n * Argon oil not only moisturizes, but also provides sun protection. \n * Olive oil locks in moisture and has antioxidant properties. \n\n* **CBD oil:** There are lots of CBD oils out there. First things first, make sure your CBD oil comes from hemp organically grown in either North America or Europe. Any oil with untraceable origins may be full of pesticides and other harmful ingredients that could wreak havoc on your skin. If you have particularly sensitive skin, choose a pure CBD oil without any added fragrances or essential oils.\n\nRELATED: [WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR WHEN BUYING HEMP CBD OIL](https://hellomd.com/articles/what-to-watch-out-for-when-buying-hemp-cbd-oil/)\n\n* **Essential oils:** Speaking of essential oils, they’re something you can add to your CBD face oil for their pleasing aromas as well as some health-boosting effects. These health benefits are thanks to their terpenes. [Terpenes are oils secreted by a plant’s glands](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a99e9f4f24d1300077ccb6f/cannabis-terpenes-pack-a-therapeutic-punch), and are responsible for their smell and taste. They also have wellness benefits of their own and by including them, you can amplify the benefits of your CBD oil. \n\n * Citrus essential oils contain the terpene [limonene](https://hellomd.com/articles/know-your-cannabis-terpenes-limonene/). Limonene will make your CBD oil smell fresh and fruity, and it will also boost the oil’s antibacterial properties. Limonene also has mood-boosting properties too, so your CBD oil can help put a smile on your face while it nourishes.\n * Lavender essential oils feature the terpene [linalool](https://hellomd.com/articles/know-your-cannabis-terpenes-linalool/). Linalool is a calming terpene, which can help with anxiety or even poor sleep. There’s a reason why so many products formulated to help people calm down and unwind smell like lavender. A CBD face oil with lavender would be a great option if you want to include your CBD face oil in your nighttime skin care routine as you get ready for bed.\n * An essential oil with the aroma of pine is full of the terpene [pinene](https://hellomd.com/articles/know-your-terpenes-pinene/). Pinene not only smells fresh, but it’s also been shown to have anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving and antiviral properties. If you suffer from cold sores, pinene is the terpene to add to your CBD oil. \n\n### How to Make Your Rehydrating CBD-Infused Face Oil\n\n1. You’ll need a dropper bottle or another kind of small bottle with a regular or spray top. Try to use a glass bottle as this is not only more environmentally friendly than a plastic one is, but it will protect the ingredients better, too. A funnel will also be handy, but isn’t required. \n2. Take 2.5 oz of your carrier oil and pour it into your bottle. \n3. Add a few drops of your essential oil. Mix and smell to see if the aroma is strong enough for your liking. Add any extra drops slowly, smelling often. You could go up to as many as 25 drops.\n4. Next it’s time to add the CBD oil. You can adjust this as needed, but around 1/4 oz is a good amount.\n5. Mix well and shake before each use. \n\nPhoto credit: [Kristin Vogt](https://www.pexels.com/@kristingroth2)\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3888888888888888,"src":"/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/14b42/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.jpg","srcSet":"/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/f836f/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.jpg 200w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/2244e/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.jpg 400w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/14b42/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.jpg 800w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/47498/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.jpg 1200w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/0e329/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.jpg 1600w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/43576/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.jpg 3653w","srcWebp":"/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/58556/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/61e93/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.webp 200w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/1f5c5/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.webp 400w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/58556/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.webp 800w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/99238/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.webp 1200w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/7c22d/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.webp 1600w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/35449/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.webp 3653w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2894-markdown","title":"How CBD Can Relieve Symptoms of Depression","slug":"how-cbd-can-relieve-symptoms-of-depression","content":"Depression can affect anyone, even children, with symptoms such as sadness, lack of energy, and problems thinking clearly and managing the tasks of daily life. Conventional treatments for depression usually include therapy and a variety of prescription medications. \n\nBut a growing body of research reveals that the cannabis compound cannabidiol (CBD) may be as effective as prescription drugs are in relieving the symptoms of depression. And CBD can help without the side effects and risks of powerful pharmaceuticals that are designed to alter the chemistry of the brain.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\n### What Is Depression?\n\nDepression is a general term for a number of different conditions that share similar symptoms of:\n\n* A persistent sad mood\n* Loss of enjoyment or interest in life \n* Problems with focus and concentration \n\n[Depression can have a number of different causes](https://www.health.harvard.edu/mind-and-mood/what-causes-depression), and it’s possible to have more than one kind of depression at the same time. Depression has a number of health-based triggers such as: \n\n* Hormone fluctuations related to menstruation, pregnancy and menopause\n* Nutritional deficiencies like low levels of B vitamins\n* Certain medications\n* Neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis \n* Other severe health problems including cancer\n* Genetics, since depression can run in families\n\nSocial factors can also lead to the development of depression. These include:\n\n* Traumatic and stressful life events such as the death of a spouse or family member\n* A troubled relationship \n* The loss of a job \n\nAnd people who experience traumatic events in childhood may have a greater risk of depression as adults. Depression can also appear alongside other kinds of mood disorders such as anxiety and PTSD. \n\nIn all of these situations though, the symptoms of depression generally arise from an imbalance in the brain’s systems for regulating mood. The levels of neurotransmitters responsible for positive feelings and calm such as serotonin and dopamine, or excitement and arousal like norepinephrine, may be too low or inhibited by the expression of other kinds of chemicals. \n\nBut recent studies have also shown that the endocannabinoid system (ECS), the body’s network of natural cannabinoid receptors, can play a powerful role in regulating mood and managing stress—and [this is where CBD comes in](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24923339).\n\n### The Problems With Depression Medications\n\nBecause depression takes so many different forms and affects so many people, the pharmaceutical industry has developed several types of drugs to target the production of mood- regulating neurotransmitters.\n\nFor example, drugs like Paxil and Prozac are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs. They inhibit the reuptake—or reabsorption—of serotonin, so that more of it’s available to the brain. \n\nAnother class of drugs called monoamine oxidase inhibitors, or MAOIs, which includes drugs like Nardil and Marplan, block an enzyme called monoamine oxidase. This enzyme affects the levels of norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine. \n\nBut a first round of antidepressant medication is effective for just 30% of patients. And many patients with depression have to try several different medications before finding one, or a combination of drugs, that can manage their symptoms. \n\nAnd even those antidepressants that are considered safest can have a long list of undesirable side effects such as:\n\n* Drowsiness\n* Dizziness\n* Stomach upsets \n* Weight gain \n\nSome also cause undesirable mood changes such as increased anxiety and suicidal ideation.\n\nFor those reasons, a growing number of people struggling with depression have found relief with cannabis, thanks to the potent mood-regulating properties of CBD, a cannabis compound that doesn’t make consumers feel high like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) does, and which occurs abundantly in all strains of _Cannabis sativa_. \n\n### The Science Behind How CBD Can Help With Depression\n\nAlong with the psychoactive compound THC, and numerous other active compounds and terpenes, [CBD affects the body’s own endocannabinoid receptor system](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21354188) as well as many other processes. This complex network of receptors responds both to natural cannabinoids produced by the body and those from outside sources like cannabis. \n\nScience has identified two main cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2, which respond both to natural endocannabinoids and to cannabis compounds. In the brain, these receptors play a role in expressing serotonin, dopamine and other mood-regulating neurotransmitters. \n\nCBD actually has a very limited binding effect on either of these receptors. But CBD can create substantial mood-boosting effects by acting on other pathways in the brain that support the production of serotonin and other chemicals, which boost mood. \n\n[Glutamate is an abundant neurotransmitter](https://neurohacker.com/what-is-glutamate) that plays an essential role in numerous processes related to memory, learning and mood. It also supports the production of gamma aminobutytric acid, or GABA, a calming chemical. \n\nRecent studies reveal that CBD is able to enhance levels of serotonin and glutamate by mimicking the action of serotonin on a [specific receptor called the hydroxytryptonine serotonin receptor, or 5HT1A](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26711860).\n\nAnandamide is an endocannabinoid, a cannabis-like chemical the body produces naturally. It’s named after ananda, the Sanskrit word for bliss, and it produces feelings of well-being and happiness. \n\nBut anandamide’s effects are usually short-lived, thanks to the effects of another chemical called FAAH, which breaks it down. CBD has been shown to inhibit the effects of FAAH, so that it breaks down anandamide less quickly and allows this mood-boosting chemical to remain available longer.\n\nCBD has a long list of other healing benefits, too. It can:\n\n* Fight inflammation and infection\n* Reduce pain \n* Interfere with processes that lead to cancer \n\nRELATED: [HOW CBD CAN CURB CHRONIC INFLAMMATION](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-cbd-can-curb-chronic-inflammation/)\n\nThese benefits can also contribute to easing the [symptoms of depression that are associated with many chronic health conditions](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5042796/). \n\nFor all of these reasons, many people with depression and other health issues are finding that they can either completely stop using their prescription medications, or reduce the dosage considerably, by taking cannabis.\n\n### How to Take CBD to Relieve Depression\n\nFor thousands of years, people have used cannabis as a way to boost mood and calm anxiety. Now, science reveals why this could be true—and how cannabis compounds, especially CBD, can be used safely to treat the many symptoms of depression. \n\nJust about any way of consuming CBD-rich cannabis products will provide relief from depression. According to HelloMD’s Dr. Richard Kim, CBD can help with all serotonin-related mood disorders. And it provides the same benefits no matter how it’s taken—whether ingested as edibles or sublingual tinctures, smoked or vaped. \n\nBecause cannabis can affect people in different ways at different dosages, it may take some experimenting to find the right amount of CBD to make a difference in your symptoms.\n\nAlthough some people opt to use CBD instead of pharmaceuticals, others find that taking CBD alongside prescription medications can help them reduce their use of these drugs and experience fewer side effects from the ones they do use. But it’s important to keep in mind that different classes of antidepressants act differently on the brain’s systems for regulating mood and to adjust CBD dosages accordingly.\n\n“CBD is safe to take with most drugs at reasonable doses,” says Dr. Kim. But that dose can depend on the kind of antidepressants you’re currently taking. Dr. Kim recommends taking about 20 mg of CBD three times a day in combination with drugs from the SSRI, SSNRI and NDRI classes. \n\nBut with tricyclic antidepressants and MAOIs, “I’d advise using smaller and more frequent doses of CBD—5 mg three to four times a day,” Dr. Kim adds. \n\nDepression is the leading cause of disability throughout the world—and for many people, standard prescription medications may not be effective or safe.
