What you need is a warm, filling meal to jumpstart your day. Breakfast kicks your metabolism into gear and prepares you for the day ahead, so it’s only right to do this important meal justice. \n\nThese two winter breakfast recipes are healthy and filling. And you can tailor them based on different dietary restrictions (one’s already gluten free, and the other is vegan). They’re both perfect to make ahead of time and are recipes you can easily infuse with cannabidiol (CBD). What more could you ask for?\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\n### Why Start Your Day With CBD?\n\nStarting your morning with CBD can set you on a path for a less stressful, more productive day. This is because CBD is known to:\n\n* Reduce stress\n* Ease inflammation \n* Promote focus\n\nAnd since these recipes include just a small amount of a hemp-derived CBD tincture, you don’t have to worry about fighting off drowsiness.\n\nRELATED: [WHAT IS HEMP CBD?](https://hellomd.com/articles/what-is-cbd-and-how-can-it-help-me/) \n\n### Ingredients for Gluten-Free CBD Egg Stuffed Tomatoes\n\nWith four servings, this healthy recipe can be made ahead of time and reheated as you need it. And if you’re a busy parent making breakfast for the entire family, this recipe makes it easy to infuse your serving separately—CBD for the adults and none for the kids. \n\n* 4 ripe tomatoes\n* 2 pieces of bacon, cooked (optional)\n* 4 eggs\n* 4 mL of hemp-derived CBD tincture \n\n### How to Make Gluten-Free CBD Egg Stuffed Tomatoes\n\n1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. \n2. Line a muffin pan with aluminum foil, indenting the foil into the muffin wells. \n3. Next, core the tomatoes by cutting off about 1 inch from the top and using a spoon to scoop out the inside. \n4. Set each tomato into a muffin well. \n5. If you’re including bacon, dice it up into small pieces. \n6. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs and CBD tincture. If you only want to infuse some but not all of the tomatoes, separate your eggs into two batches and only add CBD to one of them. \n7. Once the eggs are whisked, fill each tomato to right below the brim and add some bacon. \n8. Bake for 20–25 minutes and enjoy. \n\n### Ingredients for CBD-Infused Pan-Seared Blueberry Oatmeal \n\nThis is a breakfast option that you can and should make partially in advance. Add it into your Sunday meal prep routine and have seven breakfasts ready to go for the entire week.\n\n* 1 1/2 cups steel cut oats\n* 2 cups coconut milk (any nut milk will work)\n* 2 cups water\n* 1/3 cup brown sugar\n* 1/8 tsp salt\n* 2 tbsp coconut oil (any other type of cooking oil will work too)\n* 2 cups fresh blueberries \n* 1 cup honey \n* 7 mL of hemp-derived CBD tincture\n\n### How to Make CBD-Infused Pan Seared Blueberry Oatmeal\n\nFor this recipe, you’ll make the oatmeal ahead of time so it can cool for at least an hour (but can last in the fridge for up to a week). \n\n1. To make the oatmeal, combine water, coconut milk, brown sugar, CBD tincture and oats in a large saucepan and bring to a boil. \n2. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 20 minutes. \n3. Once the oatmeal mixture has thickened, pour it into a bread pan and let cool at room temperature for at least an hour. This step is very important, so don’t rush it. \n4. Once the oatmeal has cooled, it will have a consistency that’s more like a dense bread, making it very easy to slice and sear. \n5. Cut the cooled oatmeal into 7 even slices. \n6. Heat the coconut oil or cooking oil of your choice in a frying pan on medium-high heat. \n7. Place 1 slice of oatmeal onto the pan and sear both sides until a crispy, golden outer layer develops. Repeat now with the remaining slices or sear a fresh slice each day.\n8. Top with honey and fresh blueberries and enjoy.\n\nPhoto credit: [Brooke Lark](https://unsplash.com/@brookelark) \n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3793103448275863,"src":"/static/07f9b66de6d1cfb3deb35c658cd1d15b/14b42/1393bd351cffba794d4b7109afa641a6.jpg","srcSet":"/static/07f9b66de6d1cfb3deb35c658cd1d15b/f836f/1393bd351cffba794d4b7109afa641a6.jpg 200w,\n/static/07f9b66de6d1cfb3deb35c658cd1d15b/2244e/1393bd351cffba794d4b7109afa641a6.jpg 400w,\n/static/07f9b66de6d1cfb3deb35c658cd1d15b/14b42/1393bd351cffba794d4b7109afa641a6.jpg 800w,\n/static/07f9b66de6d1cfb3deb35c658cd1d15b/47498/1393bd351cffba794d4b7109afa641a6.jpg 1200w,\n/static/07f9b66de6d1cfb3deb35c658cd1d15b/0e329/1393bd351cffba794d4b7109afa641a6.jpg 1600w,\n/static/07f9b66de6d1cfb3deb35c658cd1d15b/df038/1393bd351cffba794d4b7109afa641a6.jpg 3670w","srcWebp":"/static/07f9b66de6d1cfb3deb35c658cd1d15b/58556/1393bd351cffba794d4b7109afa641a6.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/07f9b66de6d1cfb3deb35c658cd1d15b/61e93/1393bd351cffba794d4b7109afa641a6.webp 200w,\n/static/07f9b66de6d1cfb3deb35c658cd1d15b/1f5c5/1393bd351cffba794d4b7109afa641a6.webp 400w,\n/static/07f9b66de6d1cfb3deb35c658cd1d15b/58556/1393bd351cffba794d4b7109afa641a6.webp 800w,\n/static/07f9b66de6d1cfb3deb35c658cd1d15b/99238/1393bd351cffba794d4b7109afa641a6.webp 1200w,\n/static/07f9b66de6d1cfb3deb35c658cd1d15b/7c22d/1393bd351cffba794d4b7109afa641a6.webp 1600w,\n/static/07f9b66de6d1cfb3deb35c658cd1d15b/9122a/1393bd351cffba794d4b7109afa641a6.webp 3670w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2890-markdown","title":"6 Mistakes Hemp CBD Newbies Make","slug":"6-mistakes-hemp-cbd-newbies-make","content":"Cannabidiol (CBD) is having a moment in the spotlight. From actress Kristen Bell to UFC star Nate Diaz, everyone’s talking about the cannabinoid that helps them calm anxiety, ease pain and keep inflammation at bay.\n\nMaybe you’re curious about taking CBD, but haven’t taken the plunge yet. Or you’re working your way through your first CBD product. Or you’ve used CBD before, but it just didn’t give you the relief you were looking for. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nIf any of this sounds familiar, take a look at our list of six mistakes CBD newbies make—and our advice on how to avoid them. \n\n### 1. Not Paying Attention to the Hemp’s Country of Origin\n\nDid you feel worse after taking a CBD product? It could be because there were some toxic ingredients in it. And this could be due to where and how the hemp was grown in the first place. \n\nOne important thing CBD newbies don’t typically pay attention to when ordering hemp-derived CBD is where the hemp comes from. But this is a critically important piece of information, since hemp isn’t closely regulated in many parts of the world.\n\nThe cannabis plant, of which hemp is one variety, is a bioaccumulator. This means that the plant readily absorbs substances present in the soil, and they accumulate in the plant’s tissues. \n\nThese chemicals, therefore, can show up in the final CBD product even after processing. This is especially alarming, since hemp farmers in certain countries use dangerous pesticides to grow their plants—and those pesticides are present in the final product.\n\nRELATED: [WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR WHEN BUYING HEMP CBD OIL](https://hellomd.com/articles/what-to-watch-out-for-when-buying-hemp-cbd-oil/)\n\nSo, when you buy hemp-derived CBD, make sure the company sources its hemp in North America or Europe. Steer clear of hemp grown in China or other parts of Asia, where the use of pesticides is widespread.\n\nIf the country of origin for the hemp CBD you’re considering isn’t listed in your product information, check the company’s website. If you can’t find out where the hemp came from, it’s best to move onto another product. \n\n### 2. Not Choosing Lab-Tested CBD\n\nEven if you’re confident your CBD product was made with hemp grown with good practices, you should still know all of the details. Any reputable hemp-derived CBD product should be lab tested—and some companies test both their raw and final products. \n\nThis is another way to make sure you’re ingesting exactly what you see listed in the bottle’s ingredients and that there aren’t any surprises that could make you sick or simply make the product not work for you. \n\nA reputable company will either have lab tests available on its website or at your request. If it doesn’t, time to start looking into other products.\n\n### 3. Not Paying Attention to the Dosage of Your Hemp CBD\n\nWhen you take a traditional medicine, you probably read the label to check how much a dose is. Well, you should do the same for hemp CBD. For example, if you’ve got a CBD tincture, the bottle should say how many milligrams of CBD are in each dropper full. Sometimes it’ll even tell you how much is in each individual drop. \n\nStart with the suggested dosing on the packaging, and go from there. Pay attention to how much CBD you’ve taken, and see if you’re getting the results you need. Maybe you need to increase your dose or take a dose more often. Or you may need to take smaller doses to get optimal results. \n\nYou’ll also need to be consistent with taking your CBD dose regularly. The truth is—and this is especially so if you’re trying to ease a chronic health condition—you may not find the CBD regimen that gives you the results you need if you’re inconsistent with dosing and only take a random amount of CBD at different times.\n\n### 4. Not Keeping a Journal of Your CBD Use\n\nFollowing on from paying attention to dosing is perhaps the most important thing a CBD newbie can do: keep a CBD journal. Since everyone reacts differently to cannabis, the CBD dose that works for one person may not work for another. \n\nBecause all things cannabis usually require a bit of experimentation, you need to keep a record of how much you take and when, so you know how to adjust your CBD medicine to get the results you’re after. \n\nIn your CBD journal, write down:\n\n* The CBD product you take\n* How much CBD you consume\n* What time you took the CBD\n* Any other information that could influence the CBD’s effects like if you took it on an empty stomach or after a big meal \n* How you felt the next day\n\nThis way, you can look back on your notes to fine-tune your CBD regimen. This is an especially helpful exercise if you’re sampling several different products and methods of administration as it’s so easy to forget which product made you feel a certain way. \n\n### 5. Expecting Instant Results\n\nMany hemp CBD newbies expect to feel something right away. And while this is possible, it’s not the norm. While THC consumers can feel a head high pretty quickly, this doesn’t happen with CBD. In fact, in some cases you’ll need to build up your CBD levels before you start to notice changes. And this can take weeks or even months.\n\nResearchers now think that many health conditions are a result of an imbalanced endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is the network of receptors found throughout the body, influencing everything from pain management to mood to digestion. \n\nYou can bring your ECS back into balance by supplementing natural endocannabinoids with cannabinoids in cannabis. That said, sometimes you have to consume CBD for months in order to see an improvement in your health. \n\nRELATED: [IS YOUR ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM IN BALANCE?](https://hellomd.com/articles/is-your-endocannabinoid-system-in-balance)\n\nOne person whose had success with CBD is HelloMD’s co-founder Pamela Hadfield, who [started taking the cannabinoid to help ease her debilitating migraines](https://hellomd.com/articles/migraines-how-i-got-off-pain-meds-and-found-relief-with-cannabis/). After a few months of daily CBD consumption, she was able to successfully manage her migraine pain. Another month taking CBD every day, and her migraines stopped completely. Now she’s been migraine-free for several years and finally feels like she has her life back. \n\nLuckily, Pamela wasn’t discouraged when she didn’t see results right away. And her consistent, daily consumption of CBD paid off. \n\nSo, if you’re new to CBD, our advice is to be patient. Give yourself enough time for CBD levels in your body to rise and see if this balances your ECS enough to help you feel better. \n\n### 6. Taking CBD the Wrong Way \n\nIt’s pretty amazing just how many ways you can take your hemp CBD nowadays. You can:\n\n* Rub it on your skin\n* Vape it\n* Put a CBD oil under your tongue or in the beverage of your choice\n* Swallow CBD gel caps \n* Use a CBD transdermal patch\n\nBut the condition you’re looking to improve should dictate the way you take CBD. If you want to take CBD to lessen anxiety, a topical may not provide the best relief. You’ll need to take the CBD internally; this means a hemp-derived CBD vape pen or tincture is your best bet. \n\nBut, if you want the CBD to target a specific area, say your shoulders where you have a sore muscle, a topical CBD preparation is ideal, rather than a CBD sublingual or edible.\n\nMake sure you’re taking CBD in the right way for you. And don’t be afraid to switch up your consumption method if you think it may help (and note it in your CBD journal).\n\nSome folks would have you think that CBD is a magical substance that can cure just about anything. And while various individuals have experienced life-changing results from taking hemp CBD, it doesn’t work this way for everyone. \n\nWhatever the case may be, if you take the steps to avoid these common mistakes, you’ll help set yourself up for a positive experience with CBD. \n\nPhoto credit: [Christiana Rivers](https://unsplash.com/@christiana)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. In fact, according to the National Institute of Health, [pain affects more Americans than diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined. \n\nWhile many opt for dangerous and addictive painkillers to treat chronic pain, there’s a healthier alternative: cannabidiol (CBD). Scientific research and consumer reports agree that CBD is a safe and effective way to ease chronic pain. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\n### Can CBD Help With Your Chronic Pain? \n\nChronic pain is a fairly common condition, but it has a lot of variation. Pain could arise from:\n\n* Old injuries\n* Joint conditions like arthritis\n* Central nervous system disorders like fibromyalgia\n* Digestive conditions like IBS \n* Chronic tension headaches or migraines\n\nThere are too many causes of chronic pain to name them all. But for those who suffer from chronic pain, the result is similar: reduced functionality and a daily struggle to calm painful sensations.\n\nFor most pain sufferers, their doctor’s recommendations usually involve painkillers like opiates or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). But chronic use of painkillers can lead to some serious problems. [Opiates alone kill over 42,000 people each year, and the rates are only increasing](https://www.cdc.gov/drugoverdose/data/statedeaths.html). \n\nYou may think over-the-counter painkillers like NSAIDs are a safe choice, but [estimates have deaths from NSAIDs at over 16,000 a year. And hospitalization for complications caused by NSAIDs (like GI bleeding or liver damage) are in the 100,000 range](http://americannutritionassociation.org/newsletter/deadly-nsaids). \n\nThankfully, CBD can help. With its own painkilling and anti-inflammatory properties, CBD can reduce pain and inflammation, and restore functionality. And unlike traditional painkillers, CBD comes with a very low risk of side effects. \n\nIn fact, [CBD has been deemed safe, non-addictive and without any known negative side effects by the World Health Organization](http://www.who.int/medicines/access/controlled-substances/5.2_CBD.pdf).\n\nAnd for folks worried about feeling high, don’t worry. While CBD can aid in relaxation, it won’t create the kind of euphoric or disorienting high that’s associated with cannabis’s most common chemical—tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). \n\n### How CBD Works to Relieve Chronic Pain\n\nSo how does CBD relieve pain and inflammation without negative side effects? \n\nIt all has to do with how CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a [crucial system of neurotransmitters, which are found all over the body and control or affect some of its most important functions](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a8a629cf24d1300077ccb53/want-to-improve-your-health-make-sure-your-endocannabinoid-system-is-balanced), such as:\n\n* Hunger\n* Pain\n* Stress response\n* Memory building \n* Inflammation\n* Sleep\n* Muscle control\n* Energy\n* Mood\n\nThe ECS both produces and is activated by the body’s natural endocannabinoids. But plant cannabinoids, the medicinally potent chemicals in cannabis, activate it as well. [CBD interacts with these receptors to produce both pain-relieving and inflammation-reducing effects](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2503660/) (among other benefits). \n\nRELATED: [HOW CANNABIS HELPS REDUCE CHRONIC PAIN](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-cannabis-helps-reduce-chronic-pain/)\n\nWhen someone eats CBD, it enters the bloodstream after digestion, which allows it to affect the entire body. With topicals, however, CBD permeates the skin, activating receptors at the site of the application and imparting local pain and inflammation reduction exactly where you apply it. \n\n### Treating Your Chronic Pain With CBD\n\nCurious about using CBD for your own chronic pain? \n\nCBD works well for chronic pain when used in an edible or topical form. But which option works best may depend on your condition and personal preferences. \n\n“I think the definition of chronic pain can be very different,” says Jessica Tonani, co-founder of [Basic Jane, the only cannabis company in the U.S. that holds a license to research CBD](https://www.thestranger.com/slog/2018/11/09/35297563/seattle-company-gets-washingtons-first-pot-research-license).\n\n“Somebody who has an inflammatory bowel disease may definitely prefer an edible versus somebody who has arthritis in their fingers and may prefer a topical,” Jessica explains.\n\nBasic Jane’s product line was [specifically designed to help people with everyday aches and pains](https://hellomd.com/tag/basic-jane/), and the folks at Basic Jane have been able to gain a lot of insight through their research with chronic pain patients. \n\nTiming can also be a consideration in choosing between topical and edible CBD. “If you take an edible, the amount of time it takes for it to take effect can be a longer duration,” adds Kersten Beyer, Basic Jane’s other co-founder. “The nice thing with the topicals is that you're going to have fairly immediate relief.”\n\nTopicals also allow for targeted relief, which doesn’t reach the bloodstream. So, it won’t interact with other medications you take orally, the way an edible could. And some people simply prefer to avoid taking any more systemic medications. \n\n“We have quite a few elderly clients that are tired of taking pills, are tired of taking things orally,” says Jessica. “They’re thrilled to be able to get the relief that they need by putting on a topical application. It becomes part of their activities of daily living.”\n\nIf you’re looking to treat your own chronic pain with CBD, think about what would work best for you. Like facets on a diamond, CBD is a part of the whole, but its unique properties are showing great promise in addressing a variety of medical conditions and improving the quality of people’s lives. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nOne of these ways is by treating inflammation, an underlying and sometimes chronic condition that’s linked to many health concerns from arthritis to diabetes to heart disease.\n\n### What Is Inflammation? \n\n[Inflammation](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/248423.php) is one way our body’s immune system responds to assaults such as an infection, an injury or a chronic condition. \n\nNearly all of us have experienced many types of inflammation. There’s temporary inflammation like:\n\n* The pain of a swollen, sprained ankle\n* The exhaustion associated with a high fever \n\nThese kinds of temporary inflammation can usually be treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen. \n\nChronic inflammation, on the other hand, is associated with long-term conditions. They often create debilitating pain, because the body just can’t get rid of what’s causing the inflammation in the first place. Just a few examples include:\n\n* Crohn’s disease\n* Asthma\n* Psoriasis\n* Irritable bowel disorders \n* Arthritis \n\n### Studying CBD’s Role in Curbing Inflammation \n\nStudies are beginning to reveal just how [significant the role CBD may play](https://cbdstasis.com/cbd-inflammation-studies-summarized/) in the development of anti-inflammatory, cannabis-based medicine and therapeutics. \n\nBut researchers have barely scratched the surface of CBD’s applications, and studies have also shown how [CBD can both reduce and increase inflammatory responses](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3632657/). \n\nYet science is making tremendous strides in confirming what so many medical marijuana consumers know: that CBD use can elicit incredible anti-inflammatory responses. \n\nFor this reason, it’s imperative that anyone embarking on a CBD-based treatment do so in conjunction with a [trusted, cannabis-supportive doctor](www.hellomd.com). Another piece of the puzzle is making sure you take clean products that are sourced, tested and trusted by patients and providers. \n\n### One CBD Company’s Roots in Arthritis-Related Pain & Inflammation\n\nOne Washington state-based company, which produces high-quality, lab-tested CBD topicals derived from hemp and other healing herbs is Basic Jane.\n\nJessica Tonani and Kersten Beyer started Basic Jane after becoming friendly as neighbors. Kersten’s training as a clinical research nurse and Jessica’s background in biotech were the perfect skillset to research and manufacture Basic Jane’s CBD-infused topical products. \n\n“I was in the traditional biotech, hardcore science world,” says Jessica, who was conducting genomic research prior to starting Basic Jane. When she began studying cannabis over a decade ago, navigating the system was challenging.\n\n“When I decided to form the company, my colleagues and friends thought I was crazy. Now I’m getting calls from the same people asking if we have any job openings,” she says. \n\nFrom the beginning, Jessica and Kersten were interested specifically in CBD. “Kersten’s mother had arthritis. We read two research papers that showed promise with the reduction of arthritis pain in mice that were given CBD. Our first goal was to try to decrease the aches and pains for Kersten’s mom,” Jessica explains. \n\n“Kersten’s mom had many friends in her age group who also had arthritis, and they were begging for something to help them, which really assisted us with product development,” says Jessica. But anecdotal evidence wasn’t enough. “I’m a 100% scientist at heart. As Kersten was doing formulations, I was saying, ‘Show me how this works.’” \n\nWhat started as an impulse to help Jessica’s mother transformed into a business manufacturing a variety of topical CBD products.\n\nInitially, Jessica and Kersten used a blend of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and CBD in their topicals. “We started with a combination and did studies using products with and without THC. Then we conducted dosing studies. We eliminated the THC from the topicals and discovered, to my surprise, that the omission of THC didn’t decrease the pain relief. We found we didn’t need THC.”\n\n### How Does CBD Reduce Inflammation? \n\n“There are a lot of different scientific theories on how CBD works,” says Jessica. In lay people’s terms, CBD appears to decrease inflammatory signals. Studies show that cannabis disrupts signaling proteins called cytokines, which are part of the body’s inflammatory process. \n\n“Cytokines are molecules that tell your body you need to fix something, which leads to inflammation and damage in certain ways. CBD decreases these inflammatory signals,” she continues.\n\n“We also discovered that along with decreasing inflammation, CBD decreases the anxiety around that inflammation. CBD tells your body that it can relax, reducing the anxiety associated with having pain.” Jessica’s research has led her to conclude that topical applications of CBD are the best way to maximize its anti-inflammatory qualities.\n\n### How Do I Use CBD to Reduce My Inflammatory Condition? \n\nIf you decide to try CBD topicals to tackle pain and inflammation, Jessica recommends applying your CBD topical every four hours, or as needed. Since hemp-derived CBD products are non-psychoactive, there isn’t a concern about getting high while using them.\n\n“We’ve found that repeated applications help keep inflammation down. Some use our products morning and night. Others use creams or gels at home and our sprays at work,” says Jessica. “Different delivery systems seem to work best with different body chemistries, so experimenting is encouraged.”\n\n### The Importance of Finding & Using Trusted CBD Manufacturers \n\nThere are lots of hemp CBD products on the market. But some aren’t lab-tested and come from hemp grown using pesticides and other chemicals that end up in the final product. Even with topicals, you want to make sure that they don’t contain any harmful ingredients and that the product actually contains the amount of healing CBD that it says on the label. \n\n“One of most important things for anyone using CBD products is that all CBD should be tested,” advises Jessica. “You should know the concentration in the material you are using.”\n\n“Before any CBD enters our facility, it’s tested in its raw state by independent, third-party certifiers,” she adds. Jessica says that more testing is undertaken once their products are manufactured.\n\n### The Future of Hemp-Derived CBD Research \n\nJessica was thrilled to report that [Washington recently granted Basic Jane a state-issued license to research cannabis plant biology](https://www.thestranger.com/slog/2018/11/09/35297563/seattle-company-gets-washingtons-first-pot-research-license). \n\n“We’re very interested in some of the other molecules in cannabis, including cannabichromene CBC. Maybe the next awesome pain killer is within the cannabis plant. There are many amazing indications for some of the other, little-studied cannabinoids,” says Jessica.\n\nWith the passage of the Farm Bill, scientists like Jessica are hopeful that cannabinoid research will become easier to conduct. This way people can have more options to treat painful and potentially harmful conditions like inflammation to improve overall health and wellness.\n\nPhoto credit: [Tatiana](https://www.pexels.com/@tatiana-18128)\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3793103448275863,"src":"/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/14b42/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.jpg","srcSet":"/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/f836f/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.jpg 200w,\n/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/2244e/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.jpg 400w,\n/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/14b42/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.jpg 800w,\n/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/47498/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.jpg 1200w,\n/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/0e329/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.jpg 1600w,\n/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/75550/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.jpg 2345w","srcWebp":"/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/58556/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/61e93/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.webp 200w,\n/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/1f5c5/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.webp 400w,\n/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/58556/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.webp 800w,\n/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/99238/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.webp 1200w,\n/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/7c22d/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.webp 1600w,\n/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/24477/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.webp 2345w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2881-markdown","title":"Gift Guide: 7 Products for Those New to Hemp CBD","slug":"gift-guide-7-products-for-those-new-to-hemp-cbd","content":"Struggling to find the perfect gift for a few folks in your life? Whether your sore muscles are a result of pushing yourself too hard at the gym, or due to an existing injury or chronic health condition, the pain and stiffness can make everyday activities difficult. \n\nBut now many are discovering something that can help: cannabidiol (CBD). Whether ingested or used as a topical, CBD can ease pain and inflammation for incredible results. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### How Does CBD Help With Your Sore Muscles?\n\nCBD is known for its ability to relieve pain and reduce inflammation, which can make a big difference when it comes to your sore muscles. It’s no wonder CBD edibles and topicals are increasing in popularity. Even celebrities like Kristen Bell swear by CBD’s incredible benefits for aches and pains.\n\nSo how can CBD help with your sore muscles? Folks say it helps them in a few different ways: \n\n**1. CBD relieves muscle pain:** In general, CBD can help alleviate the pain from sore muscles. And it can reduce inflammation, which may help reduce the cause of the pain as well. Whether using an edible or applying a topical directly, people report big pain relief from CBD. \n\n**2. CBD eases strain on old injuries:** Some who use CBD regularly say that it helps reduce the pain they experience from their old injuries. More research is needed to understand this phenomenon, but it may be related to both the pain-relieving properties of CBD and its ability to reduce inflammation at the injury site. \n\n**3. CBD reduces morning discomfort:** Injuries and tension spots can both produce a lot of pain and stiffness in the morning. But when people use CBD the night before, they report less morning discomfort. Again, the inflammation reduction may be largely responsible for helping reduce pain even after the pain-relieving effects of the CBD wear off. \n\n**4. CBD relieves post-workout soreness:** Feeling sore after an intense workout at the gym? Many swear by CBD as a way to relieve post-exercise soreness. This can help with workout recovery, so you don’t have to wait forever to get back to your exercise routine. \n\n### The Science Behind CBD’s Ability to Relieve Sore Muscles \n\nSo how does CBD pull off its pain-relieving powers?\n\nIt all has to do with how CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS). This crucial system of neurotransmitters is found all over the body and controls or effects some of its most important functions, such as:\n\n* Hunger\n* Pain\n* Stress response\n* Memory building \n* Inflammation\n* Sleep\n* Muscle control\n* Energy\n* Mood\n\nThe ECS both produces and is activated by the body’s natural endocannabinoids. But plant cannabinoids, the medicinally potent chemicals in cannabis, activate the ECS, too. CBD interacts with these receptors to ease pain and inflammation, among other benefits. \n\nWhen you eat CBD, it’s processed through the digestive system and enters the bloodstream, which allows it to affect the entire body. With topicals, however, CBD must permeate the skin, activating the ECS’s CB2 receptors where it’s been applied. This allows for local pain and inflammation reduction, exactly where the patient applies the CBD. \n\nWhether you use it topically or ingest it, CBD won’t get you high the way tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) does, another reason people have started turning to the cannabinoid more and more. \n\nStill, when it comes to topical CBD, there’s a debate about how much the skin can actually absorb CBD, and whether it makes it to the muscles at all. While it’s unlikely that CBD makes it to the muscles directly, there’s a phenomenon that happens with heating or cooling cream, which may be at play with CBD as well. \n\nBasically, the sensation (such as heat, cool or in CBD’s case pain relief) on the skin desensitizes the nerves to the muscle pain below by distracting them with stimuli on top. This may be how CBD topicals help with pain that’s more than skin deep. \n\n### Treating Your Sore Muscles With CBD\n\nTo learn more about using CBD for sore muscles, we spoke with Jessica Tonani and Kersten Beyer, the founders of [Basic Jane, the only cannabis company in the U.S. with a license to research CBD](https://www.thestranger.com/slog/2018/11/09/35297563/seattle-company-gets-washingtons-first-pot-research-license). Their product line of hemp-derived CBD topicals was specifically designed to help people with everyday aches and pains. \n\nTheir research looked at the efficacy of products with CBD, THC or a combination, and found that CBD seems to be effective in treating sore muscles. In fact, they even found that in topical form, CBD works as well for pain as THC-based products do. \n\nSo, if both topicals and edibles are effective for treating sore muscles, which should you use? It really depends on what you need it for. “We tell people it’s kind of like the difference between using an Aspercreme or an Advil,” says Jessica. “The edible is more of a full body effect and not as localized and may be not as strong as if localized, but it has a tendency to work everywhere; whereas a topical will really only work where you put it.” \n\nIf you have a sore muscle in one location, such as knee pain, a topical is probably your best bet. But as Jessica points out, “If you have knee pain, hip pain, finger pain, something like that, then you're going to have to use topicals on multiple locations, and maybe something more systemic may be better for you.”\n\nAnother consideration is the topical you’re using. There are so many different types of CBD topicals, but they aren’t all equally effective. “Your skin is a really good barrier. It's designed to protect you and keep things from getting into your body,” says Jessica, explaining that CBD needs something called a carrier molecule to help it permeate the skin. \n\nMenthol and alcohol are two options that can help CBD penetrate the skin, and Basic Jane makes sure they have carrier molecules in their products. “We have a cream that’s heavy on the menthol, which is also a pain reliever,” says Kersten. \n\nWant to treat your sore muscles with CBD? Look for edible CBD like:\n\n* Tinctures\n* Capsules or infused treats\n\nFor localized pain, go for a topical CBD with a good carrier molecule. Then just wait for the pain and inflammation to melt away.\n\nPhoto credit: [Jeffrey Lin](https://unsplash.com/@jeffreyflin)\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3888888888888888,"src":"/static/5697c9206e6e93074d5aff492c2c870d/14b42/542ac9c52d707586b02aec03246450cd.jpg","srcSet":"/static/5697c9206e6e93074d5aff492c2c870d/f836f/542ac9c52d707586b02aec03246450cd.jpg 200w,\n/static/5697c9206e6e93074d5aff492c2c870d/2244e/542ac9c52d707586b02aec03246450cd.jpg 400w,\n/static/5697c9206e6e93074d5aff492c2c870d/14b42/542ac9c52d707586b02aec03246450cd.jpg 800w,\n/static/5697c9206e6e93074d5aff492c2c870d/47498/542ac9c52d707586b02aec03246450cd.jpg 1200w,\n/static/5697c9206e6e93074d5aff492c2c870d/0e329/542ac9c52d707586b02aec03246450cd.jpg 1600w,\n/static/5697c9206e6e93074d5aff492c2c870d/1f354/542ac9c52d707586b02aec03246450cd.jpg 3658w","srcWebp":"/static/5697c9206e6e93074d5aff492c2c870d/58556/542ac9c52d707586b02aec03246450cd.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/5697c9206e6e93074d5aff492c2c870d/61e93/542ac9c52d707586b02aec03246450cd.webp 200w,\n/static/5697c9206e6e93074d5aff492c2c870d/1f5c5/542ac9c52d707586b02aec03246450cd.webp 400w,\n/static/5697c9206e6e93074d5aff492c2c870d/58556/542ac9c52d707586b02aec03246450cd.webp 800w,\n/static/5697c9206e6e93074d5aff492c2c870d/99238/542ac9c52d707586b02aec03246450cd.webp 1200w,\n/static/5697c9206e6e93074d5aff492c2c870d/7c22d/542ac9c52d707586b02aec03246450cd.webp 1600w,\n/static/5697c9206e6e93074d5aff492c2c870d/0b72d/542ac9c52d707586b02aec03246450cd.webp 3658w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2878-markdown","title":"5 CBD Products to Help You Fight the Cold or Flu","slug":"5-cbd-products-to-help-you-fight-the-cold-or-flu","content":"Cold and flu season is here. Or forget what day it was in the middle of a busy workweek? \n\nMemory problems affect just about everyone at some point. And for most people, these temporary glitches have relatively harmless causes like:\n\n* Stress\n* Lack of sleep \n* Being distracted from the task at hand \n\nBut there are [many different types of memory deficits](https://www.uofmhealth.org/health-library/confu) that can range from very mild episodes of forgetfulness to more serious problems related to systemic diseases or traumatic events. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nA variety of pharmaceuticals and medical interventions are available to combat the symptoms of memory loss. But recent research suggests that the potent cannabis compound cannabidiol (CBD) can help relieve symptoms of many memory deficit disorders, regardless of the cause.\n\n### Memory Deficits Come in Many Forms\n\nFor many people, the mention of memory problems conjures up thoughts of Alzheimer’s disease, although [just about anyone can have episodes of forgetfulness or lack of concentration](https://www.nia.nih.gov/health/do-memory-problems-always-mean-alzheimers-disease). Medications as well as excessive use of drugs and alcohol can cause memory lapses. Even cannabis itself can create problems with short-term memory for people who consume a lot of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).\n\nIn many situations, a good night’s sleep, cutting back on alcohol or resolving a difficult situation can help reduce or completely do away with memory problems. But when these problems persist, they could be symptoms of a memory deficit disorder.\n\nRELATED: [CAN CANNABIS DEFEND AGAINST DEMENTIA SYMPTOMS?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b4ad4e38904b90007731af7/can-cannabis-defend-against-dementia-symptoms)\n\nMemory deficit disorders span the spectrum from ongoing minor forgetfulness to memory loss that takes a more serious turn. This kind of memory loss also affects other kinds of cognitive functions for decision making and the tasks of daily life. And while Alzheimer’s disease continues to make headlines as a cause of severe memory loss, many people are living with other kinds of memory deficit disorders, which can include:\n\n* **Mild cognitive impairment:** Also known as MCI, this condition is a kind of low-grade memory dysfunction that causes people to forget things like dates and names, or have problems with following directions and recipes. \n\n>MCI doesn’t typically impact daily life in significant ways, and people who have it can generally manage on their own with the help of things like lists and reminders. Some people with MCI may develop Alzheimer’s disease or other more severe forms of memory dysfunction, but many don’t. So it isn’t clear whether MCI is an early stage of Alzheimer’s, or if it’s a different kind of disorder entirely.\n\n* **Vascular dementia:** This type of dementia is a form of memory impairment caused by:\n\n * A stroke\n * One or more transient ischemic attacks or “mini strokes” \n * Impaired blood flow to the brain due to cardiovascular disease \n\n>Although this type of memory problem is called dementia, the symptoms can range from relatively mild forgetfulness and confusion to severe problems with daily functioning.\n\n* **Neurological diseases:** Conditions such as Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis can also affect memory and cognition. \n\n>In Parkinson’s, the cells that produce dopamine, the neurotransmitter that carries mood and behavior messages from the brain, die—often times this results in memory loss. For multiple sclerosis patients, the disease attacks the nervous system, which can affect movement, but also cognition, too.\n\nInterestingly, neurological disorders can accompany health conditions that aren’t initially neurological in nature like uncontrolled diabetes and diseases affecting the liver and kidneys.\n\nHead trauma can also cause mild to severe memory deficits that can be either temporary or permanent.\n\n### How Can CBD Protect Memory?\n\nMany different conditions and circumstances can contribute to memory deficits. But a few processes appear to set the stage for many of them, such as:\n\n* Inflammation\n* Infection\n* The buildup or introduction of harmful proteins like tau or beta amyloid that affect the brain’s cells and neural pathways \n\nAnd a growing body of [research reveals that CBD has anti-inflammatory and neuroprotetive properties](https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnhum.2013.00147/full) to help shield vulnerable brain cells and neural pathways from harm caused by these processes.\n\nCBD and other cannabis compounds including psychoactive THC work with [the body’s own natural endocannabinoid system (ECS)](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56ba6fd0023cd900080000b3/is-your-endocannabinoid-system-in-balance). This endocannabinoid receptor system embraces just about all of our tissues and organs. Natural cannabinoids produced by the body, or cannabinoids from outside sources such as cannabis, can activate the ECS receptors. When the compounds and terpenes in cannabis bind to these receptors in the brain and body, they stimulate responses including:\n\n* Pain control\n* Immune system activity\n* Balancing brain chemicals like dopamine, the feel-good chemical, and norepinephrine, an arousing neurotransmitter that can heighten anxiety \n\nOn its own, CBD doesn’t appear to strongly bind to either of the two known ECS receptors, but it plays a powerful role in supporting the activity of a number of other processes that are essential for well-being and brain health. \n\nCBD has been shown to stimulate immune responses that combat inflammation and infection throughout the body, and to curb the abnormal cell mutations that can lead to cancer. \n\nIn connection with memory, CBD acts as an anti-inflammatory agent and neuroprotectant. Some studies have shown that CBD can help reduce damage to the brain’s neural pathways in cases of traumatic brain injury. It may also protect neural pathways from degeneration in Parkinson’s disease and similar neurological conditions. And a number of studies have shown that CBD even appears to slow the memory loss of Alzheimer’s disease.\n\n### Can CBD Be an All-Purpose Memory Aid?\n\nA recent Australian study that explored CBD’s potential for treating schizophrenia also reveals that because of CBD’s abilities to protect brain cells and neural pathways from so many different kinds of damage, [CBD appears to be effective in relieving symptoms of memory deficits](https://ro.uow.edu.au/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?referer=https://www.google.com/&httpsredir=1&article=2037&context=ihmri) from a wide range of different causes. \n\nThe effects of CBD on memory and cognition can also help people without memory deficits to stay focused and concentrate better, although CBD doesn’t appear able to give healthy brains any memory superpowers such as total recall. \n\nRELATED: [DOES CANNABIS CAUSE OR PREVENT MEMORY LOSS?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b011020bf4c4d000a0e737e/does-cannabis-cause-or-prevent-memory-loss)\n\nBut whether you’re studying for a test, trying to remember where you parked your car or coping with more complex memory challenges, a growing body of research continues to show that CBD can preserve and protect the delicate workings of the brain’s memory machine.\n\nPhoto credit: [Jon Tyson](https://unsplash.com/@jontyson)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. This prolific chemical compound has never been more popular than it is now. \n\nBut this increase in popularity means there are now a vast array of CBD products to choose from. How do you choose which CBD product to buy? The first question to consider is whether to use whole-plant or isolate CBD. So, let’s dive into the differences between the two. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### What Is CBD?\n\nBefore we can discuss the difference between whole-plant CBD and CBD isolate, it’s important to get the basics down. CBD is an active chemical compound found naturally in cannabis and hemp plants. To offer an incredibly simple understanding of how CBD works, when consumed, it interacts with [the endocannabinoid system (ECS)](https://hellomd.com/articles/is-your-endocannabinoid-system-in-balance) in mammals, activating certain ECS cannabinoid receptors that cause cells to behave in different ways. \n\nCBD has gained much fame in recent years after what feels like endless positive news stories regarding its potential therapeutic effects. And in the past decade, over 50% of states in the U.S. have legalized some form of medical CBD. \n\nRELATED: [WHAT IS CBD AND HOW CAN IT HELP ME?](https://hellomd.com/articles/what-is-cbd-and-how-can-it-help-me) \n\nCBD shows promise in treating: \n\n* Inflammation\n* [Seizures](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-hemp-cbd-oil-can-help-kids-with-seizures)\n* [Cancer](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24373545)\n* [Chronic pain](https://hellomd.com/articles/5-hemp-cbd-products-for-your-aches-and-pains)\n* Arthritis\n* Migraines\n* Diabetes\n* PTSD\n* Depression\n* Epilepsy\n\nAnd these therapeutic effects can be felt without the high that tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the other most well-known chemical compound in cannabis, is known to produce. Because CBD doesn’t make consumers feel that THC high, it’s been hailed as a mild but effective alternative to highly potent THC products or pharmaceutical drugs. \n\nWhen choosing CBD, one of the first decisions you’ll have to make is between whole-plant or isolate CBD. Let’s talk through the difference so you can make an informed decision. \n\n### What Is Whole-Plant CBD?\n\nAs mentioned above, CBD is an activated chemical compound found in cannabis, known as a cannabinoid. But it’s not the only one. In fact, there are hundreds of different ingredients that make the cannabis plant what it is. There are:\n\n* Flavonoids\n* [Terpenes](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-terpenes-pack-a-therapeutic-punch)\n* Fatty acids \n\nThey all come together and influence the taste, smell and the therapeutic effects of the plant. Whole-plant CBD products contain all of these ingredients. They’re made using the entire hemp or cannabis plant, keeping as many of these ingredients intact as possible. \n\nSo, what’s the benefit of whole-plant CBD? Researchers have discovered evidence of something called the “[entourage effect](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/is-the-entourage-effect-why-cannabis-can-be-effective-medicine).”\n\nIn an Israeli study from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, one of the leading research institutions for cannabis, observed that [in mice, CBD was more effective when used alongside other compounds](https://file.scirp.org/pdf/PP_2015021016351567.pdf) naturally found in the cannabis plant. This research provides scientific evidence of the benefits of whole-plant CBD over isolate. \n\t\n### What Is CBD isolate?\n\nCBD isolate is exactly as it sounds. It’s made by isolating CBD from all other cannabinoids or ingredients naturally found in the plant, like terpenes and fatty acids. When all of this processing is done, the CBD is typically left as a white powder. \n\nBefore research on the entourage effect came out, many believed isolating CBD from the other components of the plant would help it work more effectively. It wasn’t until more recently that this idea of isolate was challenged.\n\nThat said, isolate CBD can be effective against inflammation, but its effectiveness is also tied to dose; too much or too little can render isolate CBD as ineffective. Luckily, consumers can easily and precisely dose CBD isolate powder by the milligram. \n\nOn a less positive note, isolate CBD doesn’t seem to be as effective as whole-plant CBD because it lacks the synergistic components from the plant that can increase effectiveness. It’s also a less environmentally conscious option as it takes much more hemp to extract enough CBD for isolated CBD products. \n\nThe rise in CBD’s popularity and new research about its effectivness and versatility has skyrocketed its profile. There are so many products to choose from when it comes to CBD, which can make it confusing to sort through. Understanding the difference between whole plant and isolate is a great place to start. \n\nPhoto credit: [Alex Person](https://unsplash.com/@xelaperson)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. But now many hotels and their spas offer cannabidiol (CBD) services for their guests.\n\nFeel like ordering in some CBD-infused dinner during a stressful business trip? Or do you want to sample some delicious CBD cocktails during your girl’s weekend away? Well, it seems like the hospitality sector has heard you and got you covered. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en) \n\n### All About CBD\n\nYou may know that CBD is a compound found in the cannabis plant. It’s also present in hemp plants—hemp is just a different variety of the cannabis plant than the ones that produce CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).\n\nHemp CBD is legally defined as containing 0.3% THC or less. So, it’s a miniscule amount that doesn’t get people high. If the CBD comes from the hemp plant, you can legally buy it nationwide. \n\nPeople have been turning more and more to CBD to help with a host of health concerns like:\n\n* Pain\n* Anxiety\n* Inflammation\n* Sleep\n\n[RELATED: WHAT’S SO GREAT ABOUT CANNABIDIOL, OR CBD?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a8dafa0f24d1300077ccb59/whats-so-great-about-cannabidiol-or-cbd)\n\nFolks looking to try out CBD to feel good can now choose to take it in so many different ways:\n\n* [CBD lotions, balms and patches](https://www.hellomd.com/products?category=Topicals)\n* [CBD tinctures](https://www.hellomd.com/products?category=Tinctures)\n* [CBD vape cartridges](https://www.hellomd.com/products?category=Vaporizers)\n* [CBD capsules and pre-made edibles](https://www.hellomd.com/products?category=Edibles)\n\n### Get a Dose of CBD When You Order Room Service\n\nHotels, spas and other companies in the hospitality industry are taking advantage of people’s newfound interest in making CBD a part of their lives. And since some CBD oils don’t have a strong taste or smell, what easier way to ingest the compound than add it to food.\n\nIf you’re looking for a CBD-friendly hotel in New York City, look no further than the funky James New York—NoMad in midtown. If you stay there, you can choose some room service munchies from its full menu of CBD-infused foods. The chef who put together the CBD menu, Andrea Drummer, studied at Le Cordon Bleu and started adding cannabis to her culinary creations to help ease joint pain. \n\nShe told _Moneyish_, “[I like food that’s comforting so I thought, ‘What do you want to eat when you’re vegging out in a great hotel room](https://moneyish.com/ish/hotels-are-tapping-into-the-2-1-billion-cannabis-market-with-cbd-room-service/\n)?’ Meatballs is one of those things, and I really love tater tots.” So, comfort food is what you’ll find on the CBD room service menu. \n\nAndrea’s spicy meatballs with pine nuts, Parmigiana and toast points include 15 mg of CBD. The house tots come with CBD-infused chipotle ketchup and Sriracha mayo—each with 10 mg of CBD. \n\nThe manager of the James NoMad, James La Russo, also told _Moneyish_, “We’re always researching ways to help our guests relax. CBD extract is proven to have calming effects, easing anxiety and stress. With it being legal in all 50 states, we knew we wanted to get involved.” \n\nAnd if you’re not interested in food, the James NoMad’s CBD menu also includes non-food items to help you relax and look your best, like [vanilla or lavender body soap from Wildflower](https://www.hellomd.com/products/5b57b4b502f1740001523086/cbd-soap), and [Vertly’s CBD lip balm](https://www.hellomd.com/products/5ba2aaa11669dfffefaec814/hemp-infused-lip-balm).\n\n### Topical CBD Preparations Take Spa Treatments to the Next Level\n\nMany folks, who use CBD for aches and pains, inflammation and even stress, like to take their CBD in topical form. So, if you’re in Napa Valley, CA, book a CBD treatment at [Spa Solage at Solage, an Auberge Resort](https://solage.aubergeresorts.com/). You can choose from a massage, facial or body scrub that includes CBD oil. \n\nIn Colorado, it’s no surprise that it’s relatively easy to find a hotel with CBD spa services on the menu. At the [St. Julien Hotel & Spa, there’s a suite of CBD bliss treatments](https://www.stjulien.com/spa/menu). Choose from a classic full-body massage with CBD oil or a CBD oil deep-tissue massage. You can also book a full CBD bliss package, which features a body scrub, full-body massage, scalp massage and a nice, relaxing cup of CBD tea to finish it all off. \n\nBut even in states without recreational or robust medical marijuana laws, you can still get a dose of CBD at your local hotel spa. At the [W in Austin, TX, you can book the On the Road Again massage](http://www.austinawayspa.com/bodytreatments). An ode to local hero Willie Nelson, the full-body massage uses CBD oil to help fight pain and inflammation. \n\n### CBD Cocktails Help Boost Relaxation\n\nWhile it’s [not advisable to mix alcohol and THC](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/58e7bbf32fdeaf51a1a08384/mixing-marijuana-and-alcohol), as alcohol amplifies the effects of THC, the same isn’t true for CBD. So, hotel bars have taken to offering guests CBD cocktails that are tasty and have added health benefits.\n\nIf you’re in Los Angeles, head to the [Hollywood Roosevelt where you can enjoy a CBD mojito](https://www.thehollywoodroosevelt.com/) at the bar. One woman at the Hollywood Roosevelt, Jessica Schupak [told the _New York Times_ why she’s a fan of its CBD mojito](https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/03/travel/marijuana-food-hotels-spas.html): “Part of the reason I have a drink is to relax, and the relaxation effect of this mojito is even more profound.”\n\n### No More CBD Cocktails in CA Starting Jan. 1, 2019\n\nIf you’re reading this in California or were hoping to sample a CBD cocktail on your next trip to the Golden State, you’re out of luck. Outgoing Gov. Jerry Brown signed [Assembly Bill 2914 into law earlier this year](https://www.timeout.com/los-angeles/news/cbd-cocktails-are-outlawed-in-california-after-gov-brown-signs-bill-101018). This bill makes it illegal for any alcoholic drinks to be infused with CBD. It also prevents establishments with a liquor license from selling any kind of CBD-infused drinks at all.\n\nThe law goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2019, so get to those California hotel bars to sip their delicious and relaxing CBD cocktails while you can. \n\nHotels aim is to have their guests relaxed and happy during their stay. So, it’s no wonder they’re including CBD as part of their offerings. Yes, it means they can charge more for cocktails, food and spa treatments that include CBD, but it also means the further normalization of cannabinoids and cannabis in general—and that can only be good for all of us. \n\nPhoto credit: [Hubert Mousseigne](https://unsplash.com/@northern_hubert)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. Most coverage of CBD mentions that it’s non-psychoactive, and it makes sense why. Compared to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the cannabinoid that imparts cannabis’s euphoric high, CBD seems like it doesn’t affect the mind at all.\n\nBut is this true? Or does CBD actually have its own set of psychoactive effects? \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en) \n\n### How CBD Works\n\nBefore we discuss CBD’s psychoactivity, we need to understand how it works. \n\nCBD, like THC, works by interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). This crucial system of neurotransmitters is [found all over the body and controls or affects some of its most important functions](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a8a629cf24d1300077ccb53/want-to-improve-your-health-make-sure-your-endocannabinoid-system-is-balanced), such as:\n\n* Hunger\n* Pain\n* Stress response\n* Memory building \n* Inflammation\n* Sleep\n* Muscle control\n* Energy\n* Mood\n\nRELATED: [WHAT’S SO GREAT ABOUT CANNABIDIOL, OR CBD?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a8dafa0f24d1300077ccb59/whats-so-great-about-cannabidiol-or-cbd)\n\nThe ECS both produces and is activated by the body’s natural endocannabinoids. And it also happens to be activated by plant cannabinoids like THC and CBD, the medicinally potent chemicals in cannabis. These cannabinoids interact with the ECS receptors called CB1 and CB2 to produce a wide variety of effects. \n\nTHC mimics the natural endocannabinoid [anandamide](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a949d06f24d1300077ccb66/eating-anandamide-the-bliss-molecule), fitting into the CB1 receptor’s “orthosteric” primary binding site like a lock and key, and triggering a cascade of signals, which lead to THC’s high. This euphoric and psychoactive effect can leave some cannabis consumers (especially new ones) feeling like their mind isn’t functioning the same way: \n\n* Thoughts and reflexes may slow down.\n* Disorientation may occur.\n* Emotions may shift dramatically in positive or negative directions.\n\nFor many, this is a highly psychoactive event. \n\nBut CBD works differently, hooking into a different part of the CB1 receptor, known as an “allosteric” binding site. This doesn’t cause the same cascade of signals that we find with THC. Instead, it alters the way that THC and endocannabinoids can hook into the CB1 receptor. It actually limits the psychoactive effects of these other compounds, while allowing many of their other effects to come through. \n\nBut CBD doesn’t just dampen the psychoactive effects of THC. It also interacts with CB2 receptors to create calming and sedative effects. CBD also activates adenosine receptors, which regulate both dopamine and glutamate levels in the brain. \n\nThese functions clearly affect the mind. This leads to big questions about why we call CBD non-psychoactive. \n\n### The Non-Psychoactive Debate Around CBD\n\nWhen comparing CBD to THC, it’s clear that THC has a more dramatic and noticeable effect on mental activity. And many trying to describe the difference between the two—from doctors to scientists to the media—have used the term non-psychoactive when referring to CBD. \n\nBut is CBD actually non-psychoactive? \n\nNot if we use the word “psychoactive” literally, which simply means “affecting the mind.”\n\nWhile many are using the term “psychoactive” to describe the kind of heightened mental experience produced by THC or other highly mind-altering drugs, for something to qualify as psychoactive, it simply has to affect the mind. \n\nAnd there’s little doubt that CBD affects the mind. Its anti-anxiety effects, and even its ability to reduce the psychoactive effects of THC, show that it affects mental activity—just not in a way that reduces someone’s ability to function or makes them feel high. \n\nNow, [cannabis researchers like Dr. Ethan Russo are calling for scientists and the press to stop saying CBD is non-psychoactive](https://www.theleafnews.com/news/clearing-air-on-cbd-488904401.html) and revise their language. CBD won’t get you high, but it can affect your mind.\n\n### How Should We Describe CBD? \n\nSo how should we describe CBD, if “non-psychoactive” isn’t the right term? \n\nFrom a user-friendly point of view, it’s important to distinguish between the effects you may expect from THC and those you’d expect from CBD, so that people know what to expect from their medicine. Some say using the phrases “psychotropic” and “non-psychotropic” is the right shift, but this just pushes the problem back to another word that means the same thing: “affecting the mind.” \n\nOthers say “intoxicating” and “non-intoxicating” are the right terms—and for sure CBD is non-intoxicating. But I would argue that “intoxicating” isn’t the right way to describe THC’s effects either. This term means that something causes someone to lose control of their faculties and behavior, or that it poisons them. The term is usually associated with alcohol, which actually poisons the body as it causes people to lose control of their faculties (and a certain amount will cause a toxic overdose). \n\nSaying something is intoxicating suggests that something is also toxic. THC has no known toxic dose, and simply activates the body's natural receptors, so tacking on the term “intoxicating” seems as inaccurate to say of THC as “non-psychoactive” is of CBD.\n\nInstead, the real answer is the complicated one. We don’t have a simple medical term to substitute out for non-psychoactive. If we did, we likely wouldn’t have started using the term incorrectly with so much frequency. Instead we may have to use more words than one, and say things like:\n\n* CBD doesn’t have the _same_ psychoactive effects as THC does.\n* CBD doesn’t get you high like THC can.\n* CBD doesn’t impair your mental functioning the way THC sometimes can.\n\nThese phrases aren’t as quick and easy as a single word like “non-psychoactive,” but they’re a lot more accurate. \n\nUntil we invent a new word that distinguishes between these different kinds of mental experiences, adding specificity to the way we talk about CBD may be the best option we have. \n\nPhoto credit: [WeedPornDaily](https://www.flickr.com/people/weedporndaily/)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles.
