But today’s hemp-based cannabidiol (CBD) products offer relief from multiple kinds of pain. And they do it without the side effects and risk of addiction that often accompany drug-based pain remedies. \n\nPlus, hemp-derived CBD products are available to anyone, anywhere because they contain only trace amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive ingredient that makes cannabis a restricted substance. \n\nLet’s look at the different kinds of pain, along with five of the newest hemp CBD products for easing aches and pains from a variety of causes.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### How Pain Works\n\nWhen you’re in pain, for whatever reason, the fact that it hurts is all you care about. But your body and brain process pain-related messages differently, depending on what caused the pain in the first place. \n\nNociceptive pain is the pain that you feel after an injury. When an event causes damage to the body’s tissues or bones, local cells release chemicals that activate receptors on nerves, sending messages to the spinal cord and then to the brain. \n\nBut pain can also arise from damage to the nervous system itself. This kind of pain, called neuropathic pain, happens when the protective insulation around nerves breaks down. This is what happens in conditions like Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and diabetes. \n\nOther kinds of pain appear to arise from dysfunctions in the nervous system itself, so that pain signals between the nervous system and the brain aren’t processed correctly. This is the case with systemwide, or central pain disorders like fibromyalgia, which appears to have no clear cause.\n\n### CBD Targets Pain Mechanisms \n\nBecause the mechanism of pain signaling can depend on the cause, numerous drugs have been developed to target and interrupt these pain-signaling processes like: \n\n* Opioids\n* Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs \n* Analgesics like aspirin and acetaminophen \n\nBut recent research shows—and pain patients who take cannabis agree—that for many kinds of pain, [cannabis can replace or reduce the use of these kinds of drugs](https://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/news/20180420/can-marijuana-be-the-answer-for-pain), thanks mainly to CBD.\n\nCBD and THC are the most common and abundant of the many compounds contained in the _Cannabis sativa_ plant. And [both CBD and THC can play a role in pain control](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18035205).\n\nBut CBD, which has no psychoactive effects at all, is the key to reducing the inflammatory response that’s at the root of pain signaling, whether from a:\n\n* Sudden injury\n* Headache\n* Chronic neurological disease \n\nStudies reveal that CBD can block inflammatory responses in cells that are activated at the site of a trauma to the body and switch them to an anti-inflammatory mode that reduces the intensity of pain signals sent to the brain. \n\nMore than that though, CBD also affects pain signaling in the central nervous system itself. It does this by increasing the production of [anandamide, a cannabinoid chemical that’s naturally produced by the body](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a949d06f24d1300077ccb66/eating-anandamide-the-bliss-molecule). Anandamide acts like serotonin and dopamine to promote feelings of relaxation and well-being. \n\nCBD may also boost natural levels of GABA, a neurotransmitter that inhibits the intense signaling activity that accompanies pain.\n\n### Why Get Your CBD From Hemp?\n\nThere are many varieties of the _Cannabis sativa_ plant. Some are rich in THC, and these are the varieties used to make the products available to people in states with medical marijuana programs and legal recreational cannabis. These products aren’t legal for people outside of these particular states or who aren’t a part of their state’s medical marijuana program.\n\nBut products made from hemp are available to everyone nationwide. This is because hemp has only trace amounts of THC. In fact, any company producing hemp-derived CBD products must have their products and plants tested. And as long as they come in at 0.3% THC or lower, they can be sold to anyone in all 50 states. \n\nThis is wonderful news for folks who live in states where there’s no legal medical or adult-use cannabis. Hemp CBD can also be the best option for those who want to try cannabis, but don’t want to have a psychoactive experience—no matter which state they live in. \n\nThe CBD molecule is the same no matter what kind of _Cannabis sativa_ it comes from, so hemp CBD products have the potential to be as therapeutic as other CBD-rich marijuana products. You just have to take the time to do your research to identify hemp companies that use quality plants, extraction techniques and processing methods.\n\nRELATED: [WHAT IS HEMP CBD?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55f6ea9c65393944020d0000/what-is-hemp-cbd) \n\n### 5 Hemp CBD Products That Can Ease Your Aches & Pains\n\nAnd like cannabis CBD, hemp CBD acts on multiple pain-signaling processes to provide relief from a wide range of aches and pains. We recently caught up with Jason VonLembke, a Colorado hemp farmer who supplies [Elixinol](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b6291d9a1805500087dba24/elixinol-hemp-cbd-for-better-health-and-wellness), a company that produces high-quality, hemp-derived CBD health and wellness products sold worldwide and [through our website](https://www.hellomd.com/brands/5b5a2815cad6a4000967d6d6/elixinol). \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Traditional Farms Transition to Hemp \n\nJason’s hemp farm, Centennial Ranch, is a portion of his family’s much larger 14,000-acre ranch located in northern Colorado on the eastern side of the Rockies. \n\n“Historically, it was a cattle property, used mostly for grazing. We purchased the property in 2003 after it had been converted into a defunct hog farm. Since then, we’ve run cattle and have been doing some agriculture,” Jason explains.\n\nBut like so many farmers, economic considerations led Jason and his family to re-evaluate their farming operations, which led them to consider growing hemp.\n\n![Colorado hemp farmer Jason VonLembke](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-0ad83638-ca9b-4c00-a71a-2b7f866cdd75/original.png)\n\n“Most farms in this area are in support of the cattle industry,” says Jason. “But as the prices of beef continue to go down, many farmers are at the mercy of feed lots and dairies. We were barely breaking even, and came to a point where we were looking to better monetize our asset.”\n\nElixinol approached Jason, which was looking for farms interested in participating in a vertically integrated hemp operation.\n\nElixinol announced its [Northern Colorado High Plains Partnership (NCHPP)](https://globenewswire.com/news-release/2018/04/25/1486951/0/en/Colorado-based-Elixinol-Announces-New-Operations-Partnership-with-Historic-Colorado-Farmer.html) last spring. Elixinol had already been sourcing hemp from Colorado, but the rollout of this joint venture now allows for seed-to-sale control over the entire vertical process, including the acquisition of water rights. \n\n### Hemp vs. THC Cannabis \n\nThe county where Jason’s farm is located only allows for the growing of industrial hemp, which must contain less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Hemp is rich in cannabidiol (CBD), which is used in all types of cosmetic and medical preparations. But until recently, most hemp used to extract CBD was being grown in unregulated conditions outside the U.S. Jason intends to change that.\n\nRELATED: [CBD OIL VS. HEMP OIL: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b16ba68bf4c4d000a0e742d/cbd-oil-vs-hemp-oil-whats-the-difference)\n\n“Until fairly recently, we had no experience with hemp. We learned from and met as many people as possible who were willing to talk to us. I’ve got great guys on our staff with decades of farm experience. And growing one plant is definitely not so different from growing another,” Jason says with a smile.\n\n### The Science of Big Commercial Hemp Farming \n\nWhat’s profoundly different from Jason’s farm as compared to commercial cannabis farmers growing THC-rich cannabis is the sheer scale of his operation. Earlier this summer, Jason planted 250,000 hemp clones spanning a mind-boggling 120 acres. Jason’s farm uses a very modern approach to commercial agriculture.\n\n“We utilize GPS-guided tractors. We try to be very exacting and are very committed to precision agriculture, which incorporates both efficiency and conservation.”\n\nFor this season, Jason purchased clones from local providers, but in the future, he’s hoping to expand his operation into propagation of his own plants. These days, it isn’t so easy to put in an order for a gigantic supply of hemp clones. “Putting in an order for 100,000 plants doesn’t mean you’ll receive that many, or that they will be healthy.” \n\n![Colorado hemp growing operation](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-064cd679-5bde-4b85-8eb1-8009576c4a52/original.png)\n\nJust like outdoor-grown, THC-rich cannabis, hemp is an annual plant that’s placed into soil following the last spring frosts. It must be mature and ready to harvest before the weather turns in the fall.\n\n“The rule of thumb is to plant after the freezes in mid to late May and plant around Mother’s Day. You don’t want to plant too early and risk losing a million bucks worth of clones,” Jason says. “Then we harvest in from late September to early October.”\n\n“Depending on when you plant, we’ll have mature plants around five to six feet tall with a four- to five-foot diameter,” says Jason. To determine when the plants are ready for harvest, Jason runs weekly tests for about three to four weeks. “Once we’re happy with test results, we begin harvesting.” \n\nJason bought tobacco harvesters to manage the massive amount of plant material. “The harvesters run alongside a row,” he explains. “Then the harvester lifts the plant up and lays it down on other side of the machine where you have an awaiting trailer.” \n\nA number of the farm’s former hog barns are being retooled and readied to become drying houses. “We’re clearing out all that old infrastructure and preparing the barns to be ready for hanging. We have 10 barns streaming with ropes. Once we buck the plant, that’s the end of the process from our side,” he says. \n\nTo accommodate the increase in product, plans are underway for Elixinol to more than double its extraction and fulfillment facility to 20,700 square feet.\n\n### Colorado Understands the Importance of Hemp \n\nLuckily, because all forms of cannabis have been legal in Colorado for many years, Jason hasn’t had much pushback as a hemp farmer. \n\n“The public is fairly well educated in our area. There’s been time for people who were against marijuana to become comfortable with it. The farming community certainly knows what’s going on with regard to the Farm Bill. We know the law. We know we can’t grow psychoactive marijuana. We’re very transparent in what we do. We follow all the rules. We haven’t had any problems, so we’re very comfortable,” Jason says\n\nYet even hemp farmers like Jason are still challenged by laws and guidelines, which over time may better support the burgeoning industry. “We’re always dealing with regulations, banking issues, cash flow—things like that,” he concedes.\n\nJason believes that the proposed Farm Bill provides justification for exactly what he’s doing. “Many of our friends are moving into industrial hemp. If the Farm Bill passes, commodity prices will probably crash, and more people may get into hemp. I’m hoping that precision farmers who are conservative with water will survive these downswings and will be able to move forward once the market stabilizes,” Jason says.\n\n### Hemp CBD Makes for a Happier, Healthier Farmer \n\nJason isn’t just a grower; he’s an enthusiastic CBD consumer.\n\n“I didn’t know much about [CBD products] until about 18 months ago. I broke my ankle some months ago and really started taking CBD capsules. I take them twice a day. They help with inflammation and even some anxiety. If you ask Claudia Mata, she’d say, “Yes.” And she’s loving every minute of it.\n\nTwo years ago, Claudia and her native Californian husband Zander Gladish co-founded [Vertly](https://www.hellomd.com/brands/5ba2a8ecac31ed429cd6395e/vertly), a luxury cannabis topicals brand that focuses on “clean beauty” and uses only the best-quality, hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) in its lotion and lip balm formulations. Vertly has risen above, in a field of new CBD topicals, many of which don’t hold the same high standards for quality as Vertly does. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nClaudia states that “our goal in creating Vertly was to merge the natural healing properties of CBD with a line of plant-based, clean beauty products.” Vertly topicals focus on using “organically grown, hemp-derived, full-spectrum phytocannabinoids. Our products include an array of nourishing plant butters and slow-infused herbal oils, with each ingredient selected for its therapeutic benefits for the mind and body.”\n\nHelloMD sat down with Claudia (pictured below with Zander) to find out more about her family’s roots in cannabis farming; Claudia’s transition from New York fashion editorial to the California cannabis industry; and why Vertly uses hemp-derived CBD in its topicals. \n\n![Claudia Mata & Zander Gladish of Vertly](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-eb2d6910-c53f-4e54-996e-e7bf8a667e8c/original.png)\n\n### Before co-founding Vertly, your background included being a high-powered fashion editor in New York City, most recently with W magazine. You left that all behind to move to the West Coast and get into the cannabis industry. How has your transition been from the high-heeled New York fashion world to NorCal cannabis? \n\n**Claudia Mata:** My husband Zander grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, so moving back seemed like a natural fit, especially after starting a family. We'd been living in New York for 15 years, and at the time we decided to leave, I was pregnant with our second baby. Marin County is stunning, and the lifestyle is so unique, we already knew that we wanted to raise a family here, even though we started having children in New York City.\n\nGoing from the fashion world into the cannabis industry doesn't seem like the most obvious transition. But Zander, who’s also my co-founder, has a family history in cannabis farming. His brother has his own cannabis farm, so this has always been a dinner topic for us. Conversations about starting Vertly came up naturally, especially as cannabis has become legal. Our family began talking about the implications of legalization and what an exciting time it is to land in this industry.\n\n### Vertly focuses on the hemp CBD topicals market, with your Relief Lotion, Body Lotion and Luscious Lip Butter. How did you make the decision to create these specific types of products? \n\n![Vertly Relief Lotion](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-76aea8de-4200-408d-afc2-fc240c223238/original.png)\n\n**CM:** When I started to look at getting into the cannabis industry, I was always looking for cannabis-based products that catered to someone like me and what my interests were. At the time, there seemed to be very few products that I was attracted to or that focused on clean beauty. So, I thought it would be interesting to merge luxurious, clean beauty products with cannabis. And that's how it came about. \n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS HEMP: THE NEW HOT BEAUTY ITEM](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5744aa24091a95000800011a/cannabis-hemp-the-new-hot-beauty-item)\n\n### How did the fashion world prepare you in any way for being in the cannabis industry?\n\n**CM:** Sometimes people think of those in the fashion industry as being flighty and superficial. And this is sometimes true, but not always. I will say for the fashion industry, that it’s a very competitive and interesting field to work within. Obviously, you not only need to be stylish and interested in that sort of thing, but you need to have excellent diplomacy skills at all levels, managing a variety of personalities, as you can imagine.\n\nI feel like it was great preparation for coming into the cannabis industry, because I became capable of dealing with all kinds of scenarios and also of pushing the envelope, seeing what I could do and needing to be extremely creative and jumping all in. It helped me to become fearless.\n\n### You’ve mentioned clean beauty, and you put a lot of emphasis on the overall quality of your products. How did this philosophy inform the creation of your hemp CBD beauty products? \n\n**CM:** I think of the creation and consumption of clean beauty products as similar to what happened with the food revolution. People over time have become aware and educated about how their food is being grown and what it actually does within your body.\n\nTo a lot of people, it was not so clear that beauty products have a similar effect to what you put into your body. Most beauty products are used externally and are absorbed through your skin, and your skin is the largest organ in your body. What you put on your body should have as much emphasis as what you put within your body.\n\nWhen I was pregnant with my first child, I took such great care with everything that I was doing. New mothers often will do that, hyper-naturally. You want everything that you expose your unborn child to be pure and clean and wonderful.\n\nThis just made me more aware of certain details within my own beauty routine that I wasn't really aware of before. For instance, I started to think about preservatives. There are ways to use organic oils to preserve your ingredients, rather than more toxic substances. I found cleaner ways to preserve beauty products that are actually good for your skin and your health, and gentler on the body in every way. I became obsessive about reading labels, and I still do that.\n\n### You mentioned that herbalism informed your formulation of Vertly products as well?\n\n**CM:** Yes, that’s true. Before my first pregnancy, I used to use a very expensive night cream all of the time, because I loved it. When I became more educated, I looked at the ingredients, and I was shocked. Many ingredients were horrible for your body. So, I started to really focus on the idea of clean, organic ingredients. When I finally moved to California, I started studying herbalism and how this might support our product development. \n\n### Why have you made hemp-derived CBD a cornerstone of the Vertly product line?\n\n**CM:** When I first started to use CBD within beauty, I saw the positive impact it might have within the industry and the consumers who use skincare products. Now that more studies are being done on the efficacy and positive therapeutic benefits of CBD, the more I think brands will incorporate it into their products. It’s also important to note that hemp-derived CBD is completely non-psychoactive.\n\nYou hear lot about it, and it’s kind of a fad, but I do think that if given the opportunity, it's something that will stand the test of time. CBD is an excellent anti-inflammatory for instance, and that’s positive for most skin types across the board.\n\nCBD’s also good for acne, can help stimulate a more youthful appearance and is really great for bodily aches and pains, like lower back pain. It’s full of antioxidants and simultaneously can help with dry skin, eczema and even sunburns. CBD is an element that people will gain more understanding about and see that it's a natural plant-based element. \n\n### How much do you miss New York, and would you ever move back?\n\n**CM:** No, I don't think so. I'm really enjoying the Californian lifestyle, and what I’m doing within the cannabis industry. Also, where we live in Marin County, it's just so beautiful. Personally, I feel I can’t go a day without being full of gratitude for life, because when I drive, I see such beauty around me. I feel very balanced. You can get your city fix by going into San Francisco.\n\nBut to be honest, I do go back to New York frequently, as I still do a monthly page for _Elle Decor_. It’s a lot of fun.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3605442176870748,"src":"/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/14b42/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.jpg","srcSet":"/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/f836f/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.jpg 200w,\n/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/2244e/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.jpg 400w,\n/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/14b42/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.jpg 800w,\n/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/47498/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.jpg 1200w,\n/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/0e329/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.jpg 1600w,\n/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/15009/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.jpg 3997w","srcWebp":"/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/58556/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/61e93/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.webp 200w,\n/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/1f5c5/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.webp 400w,\n/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/58556/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.webp 800w,\n/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/99238/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.webp 1200w,\n/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/7c22d/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.webp 1600w,\n/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/ca1e9/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.webp 3997w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2818-markdown","title":"Keeping Your Pet Healthy With Hemp-Derived CBD","slug":"keeping-your-pet-healthy-with-hemp-derived-cbd","content":"If you’re a pet owner, you know that sinking feeling when your furry friend just isn’t acting alright. Maybe they’re not eating with abandon like usual. Or maybe they can’t bring themselves to leave their bed for morning walkies. You know they may be ill, or maybe they’re stressed or anxious, but unfortunately you can’t ask them what’s wrong, and they can’t tell you where it hurts. It’s probably the most stressful part of being a fur mom or dad. \n\nA trip to the vet is sometimes in order, but as with us humans, many of the pharmaceuticals prescribed to animals come with a laundry list of side effects. Luckily, there’s a natural medicine that pet owners can turn to for some acute situations, as well as for preventative treatment. \n\nThat medicine is cannabis.\n\n“Wait a minute,” you may be thinking. “I’m not going to get my dog or cat stoned.” Of course, that’s not what we’re suggesting. There’s a way you can harness the benefits of the cannabis plant for your furry family member without any psychoactivity—and that’s with the use of hemp.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### What Is Hemp?\n\nHemp is a variety of the cannabis plant, _Cannabis sativa_. Psychoactive recreational and medical marijuana products come from a version of the _Cannabis sativa_ plant that contains cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)—along with a battery of other cannabinoids and terpenes.\n\nBut hemp plants have almost exclusively CBD, the non-psychoactive cannabinoid. In fact, by law, hemp plants must only contain less than 0.3% THC, a negligible amount that doesn’t cause a head high. \n\n### CBD & Its Benefits\n\nSo, CBD products made from hemp won’t give the consumer a psychoactive experience, but they will be able to reap CBD’s benefits. The cannabinoid has been shown to help with:\n\n* Inflammation\n* Pain\n* Nausea and vomiting\n* High blood sugar \n* Anxiety\n* Stress \n* Epilepsy\n\nRELATED: [USING CBD TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR PET'S ANXIETY](https://hellomd.com/articles/using-cbd-to-take-care-of-your-pets-anxiety)\n\n### Is CBD OK for Animals?\n\nThe reason that so many humans find relief from a variety of health conditions with CBD is because the cannabinoid acts on the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a network of receptors that’s pretty much found in every part of the body. The ECS influences so many processes including:\n\n* Digestion\n* Pain\n* Inflammation\n* Hunger\n* Mood \n\nThe body makes endocannabinoids naturally that bind with the ECS receptors to affect these mechanisms. But sometimes the body doesn’t make enough of its own endocannabinoids. \n\nResearchers now think that an unbalanced ECS has a lot to do with many health problems. And a way to top up natural endocannabinoid levels and help balance the ECS is to supplement with cannabinoids from cannabis.\n\nSo, how does this relate to our pets’ health? Well, animals also have an ECS. This means that a sick animal could benefit from a balanced ECS, and can balance theirs using cannabis, too. \n\n### Why Should I Give My Pet Hemp-Derived CBD?\n\nIf you’re interested in treating your pet with cannabis, CBD is your best bet. As we’ve said, it’s non-psychoactive and can address a range of problems from anxiety to arthritis. And the easiest form of CBD to obtain, and the form you can be sure won’t give your pet a head high, is hemp-derived CBD. \n\nCBD made from hemp is available no matter what state you live in—even if there aren’t any medical marijuana laws on the books. Hemp CBD products formulated for humans will work fine for dogs or cats, but now some companies are making CBD products especially for pets.\n\nOne such company developing CBD products for animals is Holistic Hound. The company makes CBD dog treats in two different sizes, so you can choose the dose that’s right for your pup. The brand also produces a CBD-rich hemp oil. If your pet isn’t into crunchy treats, this oil can simply be drizzled onto their food or mixed with anything else they eat for easy medication.\n\nHolistic Hound says it gets feedback from pet owners that its products have helped:\n\n* Calm anxious dogs\n* Stop nighttime anxiety\n* Settle dogs down around strangers\n* Ease digestive distress due to Crohn’s disease \n* Relieve sore hips\n\n### Questions to Ask When Choosing Hemp CBD for Your Pet\n\n* **Where did the CBD come from?** Because hemp is largely unregulated, it’s very easy to purchase hemp-derived CBD that’s inferior in quality and has been extracted through dangerous means. \n\n> Substandard CBD won’t actually have too much of the cannabinoid in it and will therefore lack the benefits of CBD. Plus, [the hemp plant is what’s known as a bioacculumator](https://hellomd.com/articles/what-to-watch-out-for-when-buying-hemp-cbd-oil). This means that it absorbs chemicals from the soil and those chemicals are stored in the plant’s tissues. So, if the plant is farmed using any pesticides, they may show up in the final product. \n\n> Some questionable extraction methods could leave traces of harmful chemicals in the CBD, again something you don’t want your beloved pet ingesting.\n\n> When doing your research on hemp-derived CBD products for your pet, make sure the company sources its hemp from the United States or Europe. Steer clear of hemp grown in China and Indonesia, which is known for being less than healthy. \n\n* ** Was the CBD lab tested?** A quality company will have all of its products lab tested by a third party for purity. Most reputable companies will say on their product labels and website that their products are lab tested. They may even provide the lab results, too. \n\n* ** What’s the label say?** Just as if you were shopping for yourself, scrutinize the hemp CBD labels to make sure there’s nothing added that will harm your pet. Ingredients you have trouble pronouncing or that you’ve never heard of before can be an easy way to spot products that may not be the best choice. \n\nRight here in the HelloMD office, many of us have turned to CBD treats to help our pets live their best lives. In fact, co-founder Pamela Hadfield credits CBD for helping her dog, Desmond, ease his shoulder pain at 14 in his last year and a half of life. Others have turned to CBD to help their dogs get their appetite back, move better and calm down when it’s time to go in the car or when they have to stay home on their own.\n\nAnd really, you don’t have to wait until your pet is visibly sick to treat them with CBD. Many in the cannabis industry believe that humans should think of the cannabinoid as a vitamin or supplement, something you can take daily to boost your health and help prevent problems in the future. And the same can go for your cat or dog—CBD can be your pet’s ticket to maintaining good health for years to come. \n\nPhoto credit: [rawpixel.com](https://www.pexels.com/@rawpixel)","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3605442176870748,"src":"/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/14b42/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.jpg","srcSet":"/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/f836f/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.jpg 200w,\n/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/2244e/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.jpg 400w,\n/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/14b42/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.jpg 800w,\n/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/47498/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.jpg 1200w,\n/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/0e329/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.jpg 1600w,\n/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/541f7/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.jpg 3685w","srcWebp":"/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/58556/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/61e93/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.webp 200w,\n/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/1f5c5/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.webp 400w,\n/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/58556/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.webp 800w,\n/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/99238/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.webp 1200w,\n/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/7c22d/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.webp 1600w,\n/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/3726b/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.webp 3685w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2812-markdown","title":"CTE, Concussions & CBD: How Can Cannabis Help","slug":"cte-concussions-and-cbd-how-can-cannabis-help","content":"Sports are a huge part of the culture in the U.S., especially when it comes to football. From high school games to the family pickup game at Thanksgiving to big Super Bowl parties, football is tightly woven into so many American traditions. \n\nWe think of our football players as tough, willing to take a hit, and as true warriors when they get back up from a punishing play. While all this may be true, research now shows that they’re also especially vulnerable to a dangerous condition called chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). And this bad news is that CTE may leave them with incurable brain damage. \n\nThough there’s no cure on the horizon, a compound found in _Cannabis sativa_ and hemp plants—cannabidiol (CBD)—may help ease symptoms of this devastating condition. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/explore/locations/564935726915516/united-states/san-francisco-california/hellomd/)\n\n### What Is CTE?\n\n[CTE is a degenerative brain disease, which causes symptoms similar to Alzheimer’s disease](https://www.sportsmd.com/concussions-head-injuries/chronic-traumatic-encephalopathy-cte-2/#Classifications_of_chronic_traumatic_encephalopathy). CTE is characterized by neurological and physiological changes in the brain such as the buildup of tau, an abnormal protein. In CTE, tau builds up and clumps in areas of the brain where it shouldn’t be, disrupting brain functions.\n\nUnfortunately, there’s no way of diagnosing CTE while someone is alive. It can only be confirmed after death by examining the brain for tau deposits.\n\nStill, unlike Alzheimer’s disease, CTE has a clear cause—trauma from repeated concussions. First noted among boxers, and now well known as a condition that affects football players, this incurable disease can affect anyone with a history of concussions. But most of the conversation about CTE is in relation to contact sports athletes. The repeated blows to the head, falls and collisions during these sports can cause repeated concussions and lead to CTE. \n\nThis difficult-to-live-with condition causes symptoms like:\n\n* Anger, depression, anxiety and other mood disturbances \n* Impulse control \n* Deterioration in attention, concentration and memory\n* Disorientation, dizziness and confusion\n* Headaches\n* Poor judgment\n* Slowed muscular movements\n* Difficulty walking, speaking and swallowing\n* Tremors\n* Vertigo\n* Drooping eyelids\n* Deafness\n\nWhile there are some pharmaceutical options to address the symptoms of CTE, [there’s no cure or established treatment for the disease](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/chronic-traumatic-encephalopathy/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20370925). The best prevention for CTE is to avoid activities that are likely to cause concussive incidents, and to make sure that concussions are treated by a qualified medical professional immediately. \n\n### Can Athletes Take CBD?\n\nThankfully, CBD offers help where conventional medicine is lacking. Unfortunately, not everyone has access to medical marijuana. But CBD is the most common medicinal chemical in hemp—and hemp-derived CBD is available nationwide. On a molecular level the CBD from cannabis marijuana and the CBD from hemp is the same. \n\nSo, hemp-derived CBD has properties that can be extremely beneficial for those dealing with the symptoms of CTE. From protecting the brain from concussive trauma to reducing symptoms like pain, anger, depression, headaches and tremors, CBD offers hope for those who suffer from the condition. \n\nUnfortunately, those who are most in need of CBD—professional, high school and college athletes—are usually barred from taking it, because it comes from cannabis. Cannabis is still a Schedule 1 substance and most sports organizations ban its use.\n\nThe World Anti-Doping Agency recently removed CBD from its list of banned substances. But the major sports leagues in the U.S. including the NFL and NBA still prohibit anything related to cannabis, no matter where it comes from. Even when CBD comes from hemp (which is just cannabis with very low levels of THC), it’s still not allowed for these athletes.\n\nBut now players are starting complain. Some have begun to use CBD and—realizing how helpful it can be—are fighting to change the rules. \n\nSuper Bowl champion Leonard Marshall says his life changed for the better since he swapped out synthetic prescription medications that his doctors prescribed, for CBD. “I found with CBD I had a higher pain threshold, I felt calm and finally, I felt ‘Leonard could be Leonard’ again,” he said. \n\nJake Plummer, a former pro-football quarterback shared his positive results as well, saying “Since I started taking CBD regularly, there are no more slow-moving, dreadful days with headaches, joint stiffness and wandering thoughts.” \n\nAs studies continue to find more and more confirmed cases of CTE in deceased athletes, it’s becoming more urgent than ever to bring awareness to the role CBD could play in protecting the brains and lives of these vulnerable athletes. \n\n### How CBD Can Help Prevent Concussions & CTE\n\nSo how can hemp-derived CBD help these athletes fight CTE? There are a few ways. \n\nMost importantly, CBD is a powerful neuroprotectant. In fact, the [U.S. government holds a patent for CBD—a way for them to research using CBD in this way](https://www.alchimiaweb.com/blogfr/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/US6630507.pdf). Some researchers argue that we should be using this power to help protect athletes.\n\nLester Grinspoon, a cannabis researcher and professor emeritus from Harvard University believes [NFL players should play with CBD in their system](https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/redskins/ravens-lineman-pushing-marijuana-on-the-nfl/2016/06/05/b600dda4-28fc-11e6-ae4a-3cdd5fe74204_story.html?utm_term=.26730c76ca62), saying, “I would have each individual take a capsule an hour or two before they play or practice.” \n\nResearch suggests that when patients have CBD in their brain, they’re less likely to be damaged by traumatic injuries. So, CBD could be used preventatively to protect the brain’s neurons during a concussion. \n\nAdditionally, CBD may help protect the brain even after injury. Research on Alzheimer’s disease shows that [CBD works to protect the brain by inhibiting the accumulation of tau](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16389547)—that nasty protein that accumulates in both the brains of those with Alzheimer's and those with CTE. Taking CBD for CTE may help reduce or prevent buildup of tau, avoiding the loss of function that comes from these buildups. \n\nTo add to its list of positive effects on the brain, [cannabinoids have also been shown to help promote the growth of new brain cells](https://www.jci.org/articles/view/25509), potentially repairing damage that was already done. \n\n### Could CBD Address CTE’s Side Effects?\n\nBesides protecting and repairing the brain directly, CBD can also help with many of the side effects of CTE. [CBD is known for so many health benefits](https://hellomd.com/articles/what-is-hemp-cbd/) including easing:\n\n* Pain\n* Inflammation\n* Depression\n* Anxiety\n* Tremors \n* Movement problems \n\nThis is because these symptoms are regulated by the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The [ECS is a system of receptors](https://hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system/) throughout the human body, which are activated by cannabinoids from marijuana, as well as endocannabinoids that the body naturally produces. When our bodies’ natural endocannabinoids fail to properly regulate these functions, such as with CTE, adding plant cannabinoids like CBD can help activate the system, restoring balance. \n\nIt’s no wonder so many athletes suffering from these symptoms are now coming forward to share how helpful CBD has been in bringing back everything from their physical movement to their state of mind. \n\n### Taking Hemp for CTE\n\nIf you’re considering consuming CBD for a brain injury, your first best step is to talk to a doctor who’s knowledgeable in cannabinoid treatments. You can [consult with one HelloMD’s doctors who are well-versed in cannabis science](https://www.hellomd.com/) by video conference from the comfort and privacy of your own home. \n\nOnce a doctor lets you know what dosing is appropriate for your condition, [we have a wide variety of CBD products](https://hellomd.com/articles/purchasing-cbd-products-whats-real-and-whats-fake) to choose from including hemp CBD tinctures, oils, lotions, bath soaks and even vape pens. \n\nFor those looking to avoid any psychoactive effects from THC or folks who live in places where medical marijuana isn’t available, hemp-based CBD products are an easy option. Hemp has very low levels of THC, so these products won’t result in a head high. This means you can medicate throughout the day and still be able to work and take care of your daily responsibilities. \n\nSuffering from the symptoms of CTE? As well, Wildflower is all about marrying holistic wellness with product innovation.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nHelloMD spoke with Wildflower’s Creative Director Amy Yamamura to find out more about how the company got its start, the quality of Wildflower’s products and why she believes in hemp-derived CBD.\n\n### You mentioned that both the CEO William MacLean and you suffered from chronic pain. Maybe you can give us a little bit of background on how your search for pain relief was the genesis for Wildflower. \n\n![CEO William Maclean uses Wildflower products for his aches and pains.](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-051de695-fcb8-4f68-a70a-6baae773882a/original.png)\n\n**Amy Yamamura:** William’s always been an athlete, specifically a volleyball player, so he's had injuries through his whole career. I'm an amateur athlete myself with anxiety. And I'm a mother of two, so I'm constantly stressed. So, I was very interested in finding some relief.\n\nBut I really had an opposition to using over-the-counter or prescription medication, so was always sort of in limbo, getting naturopathic healing and not really finding something very effective. And then that's how we sort of really got strongly interested in CBD. \n\nSo, we launched Wildflower about four years ago. When we first started the business, we were going to be a cannabis-focused, a THC (tetrahydrocannabinol)-focused brand. And so, at first we were developing vaporizers. And then when we came to discover CBD and the potential of it, we sort of switched our focus towards more than the recreational and just really on the wellness side of things.\n\nAnd since then, from the beginning, we were very focused, not just on the sort of medical aspect of things, but also on our branding and the way you present things so that it's accessible to everybody. We didn't want to pigeonhole ourselves into just one market or the cannabis market. We wanted to be accessible to children, to—in the future—seniors, to everybody. There are huge applications for pets, for everything when it comes to CBD.\n\nRELATED: [5 PRODUCTS THAT’LL CHANGE YOUR MIND ABOUT HEMP-DERIVED CBD](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b84620c81fea20008e62b9e/5-products-thatll-change-your-mind-about-hemp-derived-cbd)\n\n### And in terms of you being a mother and dealing with anxiety and stress, how has hemp-derived CBD and Wildflower, the creation of all of these products you've made, how have they helped you?\n\n**AY:** Tremendously. I honestly use everything every day. We don't have a huge selection of products. What we have is CBD capsules and tinctures, soaps and topicals, and vaporizers as well. My whole family uses it. I even use it for my dog.\n\n### So, you put your dog in the bath and use the CBD bath soaks on your Yorkie?\n\n![Rio gets bathed in Wildflower CBD+ soap.](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-cf5de5e1-8f89-441f-bcad-ae95d1e41b28/original.png)\n\n**AY:** Yes, my whole family uses CBD, including our dog Rio. He is a 14-year-old Yorkie, and I use our Vanilla CBD+ Soap for his shampoo. It lathers up great, makes his hair soft, since Yorkies have hair, not fur, and the scent is very faint, so we both love it.\n\nI even give him the sample tinctures with no flavor in it. We currently have flavor and aroma in our tinctures. But with the samples I put it on his dog food all of the time. \n\n### Can you speak specifically to how William has felt that CBD has helped him through athletic recovery? \n\n**AY:** William has been an active beach volleyball player for most of his life, and there was nothing out there that was completely natural and effective for his muscle and joint pain until we discovered CBD. The CBD+ Cool Stick has been a life saver for post-workout pain and muscle treatments.\n\nThere’s the added benefit of CBD that helps with sunburns. William says he started to notice this benefit after he used the stick on his inflamed neck and shoulder. His sunburn would get way better whenever he used it.\n\n### Can you speak to the development of your disposable vaporizer, the combination of the essential oils into it and really what you stand for with this product, because it's a somewhat unique product out on the market.\n\n**AY:** We were always interested in doing a concentrated oil and the technology came William’s way. It was the best tech that we've seen on the market, because it was made in the U.S. It was made by engineers that were working on Boeing, aerodynamic engineers. So, it had a very, very solid technology.\n\nMost of the vaporizers out there, when you open them up, they’re quite cheap, and there are a lot of harmful metals and other things that are in them. So, we were really intrigued by this technology, and we had a partner that we work with to make the concentration, the CBD oil.\n\nIt was my idea to combine the essential oils, because we really believe in plant medicine and the healing properties the plants give us naturally. I thought: We have two great things. Why not combine them? And there was nothing like that on the market. And I wanted it myself—to have something that's [aromatherapy with CBD](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5ae758a4049b4f000a64e928/aromatherapy-is-smelling-cannabis-enough-to-reap-its-benefits).\n\nAnd so we just tried a whole bunch of essential oils to see what worked. It was a lot of trial and error. We're still always doing research and development for the formulations. And it's an ongoing effort. \n\n### Some people have said there are no high-quality, hemp-based CBD vaporizers. Other people have said you should never combine essential oils even though we understand that they're essentially terpenes. How do you stand behind the safety and the inhalation of the different oils that you have in your hemp-based CBD vaporizers? \n\n**AY:** Wildflower's vaporizers are a smart and modern CBD delivery device. When you breathe in air from the device, the suction activates a small battery [to heat] up the liquid CBD formulation. As the CBD oil heats up, it turns into a mist consisting of oil vapor and carbon dioxide, along with the active compounds released from the CBD and essential oils. \n\nVaping isn’t the same as smoking. Smoking is the act of burning substances and then inhaling the burned material. There’s no burning of any substance when using Wildflower's vaporizers. The smoke-like haze that you see is vapor, similar to steam coming off of boiling water, as the liquid inside our vaporizer heats up to approximately 300 degrees F.\n \nWe create custom CBD formulations from CBD oil that’s grown in and harvested from the clean soil in the EU, with essential oils sourced from reputable United States companies. Our CBD oil is tested by a third-party lab to make sure there are no contaminants or chemical pesticides, ensuring the safety of our product. \n\nWe just launched a rechargeable vaporizer. We really would like to move towards the rechargeable, more environmentally friendly, but at the same time there’s a time and place for the disposable vaporizer. So we want to keep both options available. \n\n### Where do you source all of your materials? Do you sort of have relationships with farms? How do you make sure that all of your ingredients are of the highest quality?\n\n**AY:** We try to cultivate a relationship with all of our partners wherever the ingredient is coming from. In terms of CBD and extractions, we do visit the sites, and we work with the best, in our opinion, the best extractors responsible. Our CBD is sourced from the EU, so in order to vet that, we talk to partner overseas and we do independent lab testing on our oils.\n\n### You mentioned using your products for anxiety. Are there any other conditions that you think the Wildflower hemp-based CBD products are great for? \n\n![Wildflower CBD+ Healing Stick](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-d7ec44ee-6e95-40ab-80bd-eebdaacd2bdc/original.png)\n\n**AY:** Yeah, for sure. Our goal was topicals, Cooling Stick and Healing Stick. For example, I use it whenever I have like a zit or inflammation on my skin. We found out it really works for sunburn, because when we were using it for shoulder pain, we found it was effective for sunburn, too. It's got a very strong minty scent, but it works. So I use it for those skin conditions, and it definitely works.\n\nAnd in terms of capsules and tinctures, I used to get a lot of cold sores, and I'd have to take medical chemical creams and all that. Well, we know that CBD has a variety of healing properties. And it can be extracted from both cannabis marijuana, which has a higher tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content, and cannabis hemp, which only contains 0.3% THC or lower by law. \n\nSome argue that CBD from cannabis marijuana is far superior, but I beg to differ. For many years I’ve enjoyed the therapeutic benefits of CBD derived from hemp, as well as from cannabis marijuana. And although there are some differences, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoy hemp-derived CBD. \n\nI think about that time I accidently allowed my small kids and myself to get badly sunburned on our Hawaiian vacation. I used CBD from hemp as a salve on their skin. When we woke up the next morning, the burns were non-existent—true story.\n\nCBD is CBD, whether it comes from either variety of the cannabis plant. The molecular structure is exactly the same. Hemp-derived CBD is legal in all 50 states and doesn’t have the same regulations as cannabis marijuana. You can also have peace of mind knowing that you won’t get high or have an uncomfortable experience with hemp-derived CBD as it contains minimal amounts of THC. \n\nHelloMD now [sells the highest-quality CBD products](www.hellolift.com/) nationwide. We’ve done the legwork for you—we only work with brands that lab test their products and use hemp-derived CBD that comes from reputable sources for the safest CBD products around.\n\nHere are some of my favorite hemp-derived CBD products and why I like them so much. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### 1. Melt Stress Away with Wildflower’s Disposable CBD Vaporizer \n\n![Wildflower Disposable Hemp CBD Vaporizer](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-bd09f5ce-ad41-4141-ae62-782e3560ea99/original.png)\n\nLast year in New York City, I ran into Wildflower’s [CBD + Aches](https://www.hellomd.com/products/5b5770d702f1740001522c60/cbd-aches) vaporizer. Super intrigued, I purchased the vaporizer expecting a less-than-stellar experience, as I’m a bit of a CBD snob. Well, now I love my Wildflower vaporizer and typically have it with me, especially when I may be in a stressful situation. \n\nSpeaking of which, last week was my birthday, and I foolishly decided to go skydiving. It hit me about ten minutes before the plane took off just how stressed I felt. Fortunately, I had my Wildflower pen with me and after a few inhales, I was suddenly much calmer. \n\nCBD is well known for having powerful anti-anxiety properties and it has been shown to treat:\n\n* Panic disorder\n* Social anxiety\n* PTSD \n* Moderate depression\n\nAnother plus with Wildflower’s vaporizer is that not only does the company use quality ingredients in their vape oils, but they made sure the actual pen was made from metals that are safe when heated. Not every company that produces disposable vape pens pays attention to the pen as well as the oil. \n\nAnd if you care to know, I did jump from the plane, and I made it to the ground safely. \n\n### 2. Keep Your Skin Glowing With Rose de Soie Cream by Verte Essentials\n\n![Verte Rose de Soie Hemp CBD Cream](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-660d5ec9-a672-49e1-a206-1aeb4199a884/original.png)\n\nFormer fine jewelry designer Blair Lauren Brown created [Verte Essentials](https://www.hellomd.com/brands/5b75dcd504458900013470bf/verte-essentials) so she could have a holistic line of CBD-infused beauty products that fit her vision of the world. \n\nSince learning about Verte Essentials, I’ve been using her facial cream, [Rose de Soie](https://www.hellomd.com/products/5b57ba0902f17400015230b5/rose-de-soie) every day, and I’m loving the results. In Blair’s words, “[Our philosophy is that beauty is inside and out, but it starts from within](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b527f538904b90007731b48/beauty-inside-and-out-verte-essentials-hemp-botanicals). Every solution within our product line is meant to create beauty on the inside but will also show on the outside.”\n\nThe cream is light and smells delicious, gliding onto the skin effortlessly, without any greasy film. My skin positively laps it up. It’s light enough to combine with my vitamin C serum, yet moisturizing enough to use on its own. \n\nFor many years I’ve tried different topical CBD products, and this by far has been my favorite facial lotion to date. Rose de Soie is paraben free and in addition to CBD contains:\n\n* Aloe leaf juice\n* Coconut oil\n* Jojoba seed oil\n* Vitamin E\n* Sunflower seed oil\n* Rose water\n* Geranium extract\n\n### 3. Give Your Pup The Gift of Good Health With CBD Lamb Dog Treats By Holistic Hound \n\n![Holistic Hound CBD Lamb Dog Treats](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-848e30f6-e6af-4a74-a400-5c5a16ed83d0/original.png)\n\nI’m a big fan of [Holistic Hound’s Lamb CBD Dog Treats]( https://www.hellomd.com/products/5b57a1f302f1740001522f34/cbd-dog-treats-3mg). When my 14-year-old rat terrier, Desmond, started having terrible shoulder pain, he could barely walk from our front door to the street corner. The vet suggested we put Desmond on Tramadol, a powerful drug that works similarly to morphine. We decided Tramadol wasn’t an option for him. His quality of life was plummeting as his pain increased—until we started him on hemp-derived CBD dog treats. \n\nAfter taking CBD treats regularly for about a week, Desmond’s condition improved and soon enough he was back to walking. And best of all, he seemed to have his normal smile back. CBD dog treats were a game-changer for him until the time of his death about a year and a half later.\n\nWhen searching for the highest-quality CBD dog treats to sell on HelloMD, we found [Holistic Hound](https://www.hellomd.com/brands/5b5a2979cad6a4000967d6d7/holistic-hound). Founder Heidi Hill developed her products with a mission to improve the overall health and wellness of pets. Her dog treats are made from organic, whole-plant ingredients. \n\nHeidi includes mushroom extract in her products, as she says, “I’ve seen the many benefits of medicinal mushrooms, and have been selling and using them for years. So, I loved the idea of [creating a product that combined mushrooms with the additional incredible benefits of hemp](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b43e7df8904b90007731ac3/nourish-to-flourish-holistic-hound-hemp-oil-products). We get consistent customer feedback that our products are more effective than others they’ve tried, and I believe that this is due to this powerful combination.” \n\nI’ve been giving Juno, my hunk-of-love 150-pound Boerboel, the lamb CBD dog treats for some hip issues she’s been having, and I can say she loves them.\n\n### 4. Ease Your Aches & Pains With Relieve Pain Cream By Basic Jane \n\n![Basic Jane Hemp CBD Relieve Cream](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-7a7e24a9-f5bb-46c5-aeda-e1d555975658/original.png)\n\nCBD topicals are an approachable way to try hemp-derived CBD, like the [Relieve Pain Cream by Basic Jane](https://www.hellomd.com/products/5b57a97302f1740001522fa3/relieve-pain-cream). This topical really helps me with the aches and pains associated from a good workout or even if I happen to fracture a toe while skipping through a fountain in downtown Montreal on a warm summer’s night (yes, this happened a few weeks ago). \n\nThe Relieve Cream is one of my favorites because the texture of the cream is luxurious without being greasy, it smells like cool wintergreen and it actually works for me.\n\nRelieve was conceived by one of the co-founders of [Basic Jane](https://www.hellomd.com/brands/5b5a158ecad6a4000967d6d5/basic-jane) as way to help her 80-year-old mother deal with chronic pain. Both of the founders, Kersten and Jessica, have a background in research and science, and Kersten has a background as a nurse. \n\nTo help develop the best CBD product for pain relief, they’ve even sequenced the genomes of _Cannabis sativa_ plants, which helped in the formulation of Relieve. Jessica says, “[Basic Jane produces cream, gel, sprays and oils in three signature scents](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b6f5ec681fea20008e62aed/basic-jane-hemp-cbd-remedies-for-your-aches-and-pains). We also offer Relieve, Relax and Awake lines. Our Relieve line contains our signature blend of wintergreen and peppermint to provide cooling relief for your aches and pains; it comes in a cream, gel, spray or oil.”\n\n### 5. Fight Pain With Full-Spectrum CBD Hemp Oil Drops By Elixinol\n\n![Elixinol Hemp CBD Oil](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-8618f6f1-4aa5-4675-a9dc-53312f38cf07/original.png)\n\nI launched HelloMD with my co-founder because CBD helped stop migraines that plagued me for 25 years. No pharmaceutical helped me manage my pain, with the exception of the opiate Vicodin, which isn’t meant to be a long-term solution. CBD from cannabis not only helped manage my pain but has prevented my migraines altogether. \n\nAlthough, I can’t claim that the [Elixinol Cinnamint Drops](https://www.hellomd.com/products/5b57a95202f1740001522f9f/cbd-hemp-oil-drops) will stop migraines or prevent any other condition, I can say that [Elixinol](https://www.hellomd.com/brands/5b5a2815cad6a4000967d6d6/elixinol) offers one of the highest-quality hemp-derived CBD products on the market. \n\nElixinol uses safe CO2 extraction and the highest-quality CBD hemp oil. According to Elixinol’s Chris Husong, the company is focused on quality, stating, “… in 2018, we went into the agriculture business and are now growing much of our own hemp in Colorado. This gives us complete seed-to-sale control over the process. And it ensures we have not only [the quantity of full-spectrum hemp oil we need, but also the quality full-spectrum hemp oil our customers have come to expect from Elixinol](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b6291d9a1805500087dba24/elixinol-hemp-cbd-for-better-health-and-wellness).”\n\nIf you’re still unsure about any of these products or others you find on HelloMD, head over to our [Answers](https://www.hellomd.com/answers) page where you can post a question and one of our in-the-know customer service specialists will be happy to answer it for you. \n\n\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,/9j/2wBDABALDA4MChAODQ4SERATGCgaGBYWGDEjJR0oOjM9PDkzODdASFxOQERXRTc4UG1RV19iZ2hnPk1xeXBkeFxlZ2P/2wBDARESEhgVGC8aGi9jQjhCY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2P/wgARCAAOABQDASIAAhEBAxEB/8QAFwAAAwEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIDAf/EABcBAAMBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABAgP/2gAMAwEAAhADEAAAAUxDCLkRn//EABkQAAMBAQEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABEQIhMf/aAAgBAQABBQKnrrRhQa5mz//EABQRAQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABD/2gAIAQMBAT8BP//EABYRAQEBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAhQf/aAAgBAgEBPwHUf//EABkQAQACAwAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABITGh4f/aAAgBAQAGPwLCXVtql//EABwQAQEBAAIDAQAAAAAAAAAAAAERAGFxIUGRof/aAAgBAQABPyFCF/WWC+J9wKQO8WqvGJ5GN+j1v//aAAwDAQACAAMAAAAQix//xAAVEQEBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEf/aAAgBAwEBPxBX/8QAFxEAAwEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAERMf/aAAgBAgEBPxCYKh//xAAeEAEBAAEDBQAAAAAAAAAAAAABEQAhMUFRYXGRwf/aAAgBAQABPxC3ASM7MaQQAKFdPGFIxsQ9TjKpwkhxqBLhg7MfmanQMBGmf//Z","aspectRatio":1.3888888888888888,"src":"/static/5c43de7b6fc4895797b2fb6d4e9cde7d/14b42/2c55e474198207da3c8a2253da677633.jpg","srcSet":"/static/5c43de7b6fc4895797b2fb6d4e9cde7d/f836f/2c55e474198207da3c8a2253da677633.jpg 200w,\n/static/5c43de7b6fc4895797b2fb6d4e9cde7d/2244e/2c55e474198207da3c8a2253da677633.jpg 400w,\n/static/5c43de7b6fc4895797b2fb6d4e9cde7d/14b42/2c55e474198207da3c8a2253da677633.jpg 800w,\n/static/5c43de7b6fc4895797b2fb6d4e9cde7d/47498/2c55e474198207da3c8a2253da677633.jpg 1200w,\n/static/5c43de7b6fc4895797b2fb6d4e9cde7d/0e329/2c55e474198207da3c8a2253da677633.jpg 1600w,\n/static/5c43de7b6fc4895797b2fb6d4e9cde7d/2db2e/2c55e474198207da3c8a2253da677633.jpg 3845w","srcWebp":"/static/5c43de7b6fc4895797b2fb6d4e9cde7d/58556/2c55e474198207da3c8a2253da677633.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/5c43de7b6fc4895797b2fb6d4e9cde7d/61e93/2c55e474198207da3c8a2253da677633.webp 200w,\n/static/5c43de7b6fc4895797b2fb6d4e9cde7d/1f5c5/2c55e474198207da3c8a2253da677633.webp 400w,\n/static/5c43de7b6fc4895797b2fb6d4e9cde7d/58556/2c55e474198207da3c8a2253da677633.webp 800w,\n/static/5c43de7b6fc4895797b2fb6d4e9cde7d/99238/2c55e474198207da3c8a2253da677633.webp 1200w,\n/static/5c43de7b6fc4895797b2fb6d4e9cde7d/7c22d/2c55e474198207da3c8a2253da677633.webp 1600w,\n/static/5c43de7b6fc4895797b2fb6d4e9cde7d/00dcf/2c55e474198207da3c8a2253da677633.webp 3845w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2797-markdown","title":"Hemp’s History as a Source of Food, Fiber & Now CBD","slug":"hemps-history-as-a-source-of-food-fiber-and-now-cbd","content":"Humans and hemp have a lengthy, intertwined history. Both hemp and marijuana come from the plant _Cannabis sativa_. The word marijuana usually refers to plants that were bred for a high tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content, and hemp is reserved for plants with less than 0.3% THC. Hemp has played a pivotal role in society by providing us with food, fiber and medicine.\n\nBut throughout the 1900s, hemp’s prevalence began to drop off: Cotton became king and anti-cannabis propaganda began to heat up, until marijuana and hemp were made illegal in the U.S. and other countries. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nAfter years in the dark, we’re in the middle of a rebirth: People are rediscovering hemp’s myriad uses and its efficacy in helping children with seizures. Hemp fibers, which are used to spin yarn and weave cloth, must come from plants that are intentionally grown in close quarters. \n\nFrom this starting point in Central Asia, humans brought _C. sativa_ with them in their migrations across the globe, breeding and modifying the plant to suit their various needs—whether it was for food, fiber, medicinal or even psychoactive purposes. From this breeding, the differences between hemp and marijuana slowly begin to emerge. \n\n### 7000 BCE–476 CE: Hemp Was an Important Crop for Ancient Civilizations \n\nArcheologists have found evidence of _C. sativa_ in southern and eastern Asia, Europe, Egypt and the Arabian Peninsula. In the civilizations that cultivated it, hemp played an important economic, cultural and spiritual role. In many societies, the hemp harvest was an important part of the year and a time of both hard work and celebration. \n\n![paper making in the Himalayas](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-8305acbc-6165-4e68-ad3a-3469f3a56345/original.png)\n_Many cultures, including those in the Himalayas, have used hemp to make paper throughout history._\n\nIt was the Chinese who would use hemp to make an early form of paper. Other societies would also go on to make paper out of hemp, but they would do this much later on. The Chinese, along with the Romans and Egyptians, were also likely one of the first civilizations to take note of the plant’s therapeutic properties and mention them in their medical texts. \n\n### 500s–1400s: Hemp Spreads Throughout the World \n\nAfter the fall of the Western Roman Empire, hemp continued to influence ancient civilizations. Archeologists have uncovered the grave of French queen Arnegunde, who was buried with a hemp cloth in 570. And _C. sativa_ seeds were found in a Viking burial that dates back to 800.\n\nMeanwhile, in late medieval Germany and Italy, hemp was used in cooked dishes. It served as a filling for pies and tortes, and was even boiled in soup, according to _Regional Cuisines of Medieval Europe: A Book of Essays_.\n\n### 1500s–1700s: Hemp Goes West \n\nRopes and sails made from hemp were crucial to the Age of Exploration. Spaniards brought hemp to the Western Hemisphere in 1545, when they began to cultivate it in Chile. The plant was so important that the Spanish crown required much of its colonized farmers to meet hemp quotas.\n\nMeanwhile in Britain, hemp cultivation hit its peak to meet the English military’s seafaring needs. During the Tudor era, farmers in the English countryside were required to plant a certain percentage of their land with hemp. The same would be required of the colonists of Jamestown (pictured below) in 1619.\n\n![Jamestown colony](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-eb6a76fe-62f3-4311-9395-f4197b766401/original.png)\n\n### 1800s: Hemp Plays a Crucial Role in the U.S.’s Early Economy\n\nHemp would go on to play a major role in the early development of North America. As you may have heard, the Founding Fathers, including George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, grew hemp. And while the rumors that the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were written on hemp aren’t true, it’s possible that early drafts of these documents were written on hemp paper. \n\nHemp production was prevalent in the U.S. during this time, and the plant made up a significant portion of Kentucky’s pre-Civil War economy. Many hemp plantations were located in the South and border states, where slave labor was used to harvest the plant, due to the process’s labor-intensity. \n\nThe invention of the cotton gin (pictured below) in 1794 would slowly place hemp out of favor. The gin made cotton much easier to process, making it the preferred crop for fiber. \n\n![Cotton gin slowly displaces hemp](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-b0e1196d-0526-4771-afd2-060bcc33fcb0/original.png)\n\n### 1937: The Marihuana Tax Act Doesn’t Differentiate Hemp From Marijuana \n\nBy the 1930s in the U.S., new machinery made hemp processing easier. And yet, this decade would also spell out hemp’s decline: Companies like DuPont, who were interested in promoting their synthetic textiles, put out anti-hemp propaganda with the help of influential newspaper publications, like those run by the Hearst family. \n\nThis propaganda was further propelled by Henry Anslinger, commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics (which would later become the Drug Enforcement Administration, or DEA). By taking advantage of the public’s ignorance of both hemp and marijuana, Henry promoted many of the negative stereotypes surrounding cannabis that are still pervasive to this day. \n\nUltimately, these forces would result in the passing of the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937, which placed all _C. sativa_ plants under government control. The Act didn’t differentiate between psychoactive marijuana and hemp. It required all hemp farmers to register and obtain a license from the federal government.\n\nOther restrictions were passed regarding the production, sale and possession of cannabis in all its forms. Several other nations also established prohibition laws regarding _C. sativa_ during this time.\n\n### 1942: The U.S. Government Briefly Legalizes Hemp Production During WWII \n\nDuring World War II, industrial fibers that were often imported from overseas were in short supply, prompting the federal government to lift the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937. To encourage farmers to grow hemp, and likely to explain the lifting of a ban of a substance that they’d recently promoted as extremely dangerous, the U.S. government released a film titled Hemp for Victory (pictured below) in 1942. The film goes through the history of hemp and how it was used for rope and cloth.\n\n![Image of hemp being processed from Hemp for Victory film](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-f2132576-1f3e-4f5f-98f2-6ecad4693155/original.png)\n\nFamers with special permits were tasked with supplying the nation with hemp. Shortly after the war, the DEA initiated a series of anti-hemp programs, and the plant was once again criminalized.\n\n### 1963: CBD’s Structure Is Fully Established \n\nCBD was initially discovered in 1940, but the scientists at the time deemed it pharmacologically inactive. In 1963, Raphael Mechoulam fully detailed CBD’s molecular structure—one year before he famously decoded the structure of THC. It would be roughly 40 years before interest in CBD would lead to the breeding of high-CBD cannabis varieties. \n\n### 1970: The Controlled Substances Act Classifies Cannabis as a Schedule I Drug\n\nThe Controlled Substances Act listed cannabis as a Schedule I drug: a substance with high abuse potential, no medical use and severe safety concerns. Like the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937, it made no distinction between hemp and marijuana. This categorization of cannabis has had far-reaching effects, hampering scientific research and people’s access to the plant—effects that are still felt today.\n\n### 1970: Ernest Small Defines Hemp as Having Less Than 0.3% THC \n\nIn the 1970s, Canadian scientist Ernest Small published an obscure taxonomic report in which he drew the line between hemp and marijuana. Ernest decided that the distinguishing factor between the two was that hemp contained less than 0.3% THC.\n\nThis arbitrary figure would go on to be adopted into law and have a major impact on how hemp products are made today.\n\n### 1988: Scientists Discover the Endocannabinoid System\n\nScientists Allyn Howlett and William Devane located the CB1 receptor in the rat brain, hinting at the existence of the endocannabinoid system. In the early 1990s, other key components of this system were identified.\n\n### 2011: The Stanley Brothers Develop Charlotte’s Web\n\n![Charlotte's Web](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-0d0cfca3-958d-42bf-a8bd-3bc0383e5314/original.png)\n\nPossibly one of the most well-known high-CBD strains in existence, Charlotte’s Web was created by crossing a marijuana strain with an industrial hemp plant. The outcome was originally called Hippie’s Disappointment, due to its low-THC content. It would later be renamed Charlotte’s Web, after medical marijuana patient Charlotte Figi. \n\n### 2013: CNN’s “Weed” Popularizes CBD \n\nSanjay Gupta’s three-part documentary series “Weed” popularized medical marijuana and CBD for many Americans. The first documentary featured Charlotte Figi, a six-year-old with a severe form of epilepsy who found relief after taking CBD.\n\nAfter the airing of the documentary, interest in hemp- and marijuana-derived CBD products skyrocketed—a trend that still continues today.\n\nRELATED: [HOW HEMP CBD OIL CAN HELP KIDS WITH SEIZURES](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b5b62b1a1805500087db9cd/how-hemp-cbd-oil-can-help-kids-with-seizures)\n\n### 2014: Farm Bill Signed Into Law by President Barack Obama\n\n![President Barack Obama signed the Farm Bill into law in 2014](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-56eab40e-b59a-476c-80bc-aee93d6da487/original.png)\n\nSection 7606 of the Farm Bill of 2014 was titled “Legitimacy of Hemp Research,” and made a distinction between industrial hemp and psychoactive marijuana. This law allowed states who’d legalized hemp to conduct research on the plant and allow pilot programs. Under this law, _C. sativa_ varieties containing more than 0.3% THC weren’t allowed. \n\n### 2017: World Health Organizations Supports CBD Use\n\nA World Health Organization (WHO) report found that CBD isn’t associated with abuse potential and on the contrary, has several medical applications. The WHO also noted that research confirms some of the molecule’s positive benefits.\n\n### 2018: The Hemp Farming Act of 2018\n\nOn April 12, 2018, Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky introduced a bill that would allow states and tribes to oversee hemp production. The bill would remove hemp from its Schedule 1 status and charge the U.S. Department of Agriculture with regulating the plant. \n\nWhile the bill still defines hemp as _C. sativa_ that’s less than 0.3% THC, it notably includes extracts in its definition and explicitly addresses the cannabinoids found in hemp (read: CBD)—all this adds more certainty to a currently grey legal climate. The bill is being fast-tracked through the Senate and is expected to pass.\n\nPhoto credits: [Lucy Downey](https://www.flickr.com/photos/eljay/) (main image); [Marco Verch](https://www.flickr.com/photos/30478819@N08/) (hemp fiber); [Caleb See](https://www.flickr.com/photos/scallopsee/) (paper making in the Himalayas); [Ray Bouknight](https://www.flickr.com/photos/raybouk/) (Jamestown); [John W. Basic Jane has been able to create natural pain remedies—including gels, creams and sprays—powered by Verda Bio. \n\nNamed one of the most interesting people in cannabis by _The Seattle Times_ and a cannabis leading lady by _Cannabis Now_, co-founder Jessica Tonani is a biotechnology professional with two decades of experience in life science research. She became interested in cannabinoids due to an incurable illness she suffers from. With her best friend Kersten Gaba, who’s a clinical research nurse, they founded Verda Bio.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nVerda Bio has been active in obtaining cannabis research legislation in Washington state. Currently, Verda Bio has the only state-issued cannabis research license in the country. Verda Bio has sequenced the genomes of _Cannabis sativa_ plants, collaborated with leading research institutes and tracked feedback from users to create a high-quality line of plant-based topicals, which are sold by Basic Jane.\n\nHelloMD talked with Jessica (pictured below right with Kersten) about how Basic Jane got its start, why she and Kersten decided to use hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) in its products, and the various topical blends it has to offer. \n\n![Kersten & Jessica, co-founders of Basic Jane](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-050cae7d-47de-436b-8ae3-972d673554ed/original.png)\n\n### The founders of Basic Jane have a background in research and science. What led you to start Basic Jane?\n\n**Jessica Tonani:** The idea for Basic Jane topicals was founded in 2014 when my co-founder Kersten was approached by her 80-year-old mother who was devastated to learn she could no longer take her anti-inflammatory medications for the painful arthritis in her knees, hands and the degenerative disks in her back. As a nurse, she had to find a way to help. I was a little skeptical about whether we’d be able to help, but our research was a success. \n\nA few months later, Basic Jane’s first Relieve formula was developed in 2014. Relieve was formally introduced to the public in 2017 after years of research and development. \n\n### Your product line focuses on topicals, all with hemp-derived CBD. What’s the science behind CBD working in our bodies?\n\n**JT:** This is a great question and an emerging area of research. The question of how CBD works in the body is a complicated question to answer, because CBD doesn’t do just one thing in the body. We know that CBD interacts with a number of different receptors in the body including GPR18, GPR55, GPR 119, 5HT1A and TRPV2. Using CBD for pain relief has been researched since the 1970s, but it wasn’t until the early 2000s that research began to explore the use of CBD for topical and transdermal systems of pain relief.\n\nResearch has shown several ways CBD leads to pain relief in the body including using the adenosine pathway. But the complete mechanism is still being discovered. We continue to perform research ourselves and collaborate with other researchers to determine how CBD works in the body. \n\n### Why did Basic Jane choose to use hemp-derived CBD vs. CBD from cannabis marijuana or even a THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) topical?\n\n**JT:** The CBD molecule derived from any cannabis plant, hemp or marijuana, is exactly the same molecule. Hemp plants simply don’t produce high levels of THC. \nAt Basic Jane, our goal is to build effective pain relief products. We began our research to find the perfect pain relief formulation by exploring multiple compounds from cannabis. The data led us to CBD. We found people had the greatest pain relief with products containing CBD. \n\nIt was a natural transition for us to move to _Cannabis sativa_ plants with less than 0.3% THC—hemp—to manufacture our products. Hemp is legally used to produce topical products, food supplements, textiles and an endless supply of other products. This is the reason why we use hemp plants. Hemp plants allow us to create products to address everyday aches and pains that are easily accessible to everyone. \n### Anecdotally speaking, why are topicals being used by people for aches and pains?\n\n**JT:** People are using Basic Jane products for aches and pains because they’re experiencing relief. We hear from a broad spectrum of people using the products ranging in age from young athletes to 103-year-olds. Our customers tell us that people like the idea of being able to target pain relief with a topical without taking a pill. No one wants to go through life with pain. \n\nHere are a couple of the testimonials on our website:\n\n“Basic Jane provides the relief I need so I can get back to my exercise routine again. Thanks, Basic Jane, I am so thankful for your products!” —Ester\n\n“This has been a wonderful product for me as I am no longer in constant pain from my hip area and in my lower back. I feel like I have my life back.” —Shirley \n\n### Basic Jane talks about the “genomes of the cannabis” plant when speaking about its products. What do you like to highlight about the cannabis plant that you use and the overall line-up of ingredients?\n\n**JT:** Studying the genomes of cannabis allows us to begin to understand how and why the plant produces different cannabinoids. For example, the genetics of a plant will dictate if a cannabis plant is a hemp plant (produces less than 0.3% THC) or marijuana.\n\nWe’re very interested in researching molecules like THCV, CBG and CBC. We hope that by understanding the genetics of cannabis, we’ll be able to expand our products beyond CBD to other molecules—such as CBDV, THCV and so on—which may have equal or better pain relief properties in the future. \n\n### Why do you have different kinds of topicals? Are they used for different reasons?\n\n**JT:** We know people have different needs, and so we’ve built products to address those differences. We generally refer people to the following comparison chart, which you can find on our [website](https://basicjane.com/pages/comparison-chart).\n\n![Basic Jane product comparison chart](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-38565bc7-dbe1-4cbb-893e-4f3dabe1e6cf/original.png)\n\nBasic Jane produces cream, gel, sprays and oils in three signature scents. We offer Relieve, Relax and Awake lines. Our Relieve line contains our signature blend of wintergreen and peppermint to provide cooling relief for your aches and pains; it contains a cream, gel, spray and oil.\n\nOur Relax line contains our signature blend of lavender, ylang-ylang and clary sage to relax and calm your aches and pains; it contains a spray and an oil. Meanwhile, our Awake line contains our signature blend of citrus, bergamot and ginger to refresh the soul and soothe your aches and pains; it contains a spray and an oil. \n\nWe find some people have a personal preference as to what format—cream, gel, spray or oil—they use. But we also designed the products to address different needs. For example, the Relieve cream is a nourishing and indulgent cream, providing rapid cooling pain relief. We find people love to use this product before bed or first thing in the morning, but it may be a little thick to use before a workout or under a brace.\n\nIn contrast, the Relieve gel is a light, aloe-based gel designed to penetrate deep and absorb quickly to decrease inflammation and provide cooling relief. Relieve gel is the perfect product to use in hot weather or when working out due to its quick absorption. We find people love to use this product before they go to the gym or under braces.\n\n![Basic Jane product line](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-779add64-d0a3-41cf-bdb8-465f36bf1589/original.jpg)\n\nOur newest products are the Basic Jane pain relief sprays—available in Awake, Relax and Relieve scents—which are designed to be used on hard-to-reach areas or for particularly stubborn pain—meaning, they’re our strongest product. The pain sprays are fast-acting and extremely easy to apply.\n\nFinally, our oils, also available in Awake, Relax and Relieve, are compact rollerball applicators, which are perfect to carry on the go. We find people love to use these products on the bottom of their feet or key areas on the body like their temples, wrists and neck line. \n\n### Where does Basic Jane source its hemp-derived CBD? \n\n**JT:** We source our hemp from Europe. \n\n### Basic Jane has a comprehensive menu of CBD topicals. What are your most popular products and why?\n\n**JT:** Basic Jane’s most popular product is our Relieve cream, which is a thick, nourishing cream containing a signature blend of peppermint, menthol and hemp-derived CBD. People love the rapid onset of pain relief and the cooling relief of this nourishing cream. This is the perfect product to apply before you go to sleep or in the morning. This is my favorite product. I love to use it on sore feet after a long day.\n\nOur Relieve gel is also extremely popular, especially in the warmer seasons, as it’s a light aloe-based gel that contains a powerful combination of peppermint, arnica, cooling menthol and hemp-derived CBD to provide light, soothing relief. The gel is perfect for athletes as the lightweight gel can be used under braces without causing the brace to slip. Our gel is also used for relief from sunburns and bug bites.\n\nRelieve gel is my co-founder’s favorite product. She’s a rower, which can cause leg cramps. She loves to use Relieve gel pre and post-rowing. \n\nFinally, we just recently launched our pain relief sprays, which have become extremely popular. They’re easy to apply and work quickly. All three sprays contain menthol and hemp-derived CBD to penetrate deep and decrease pain.\n\nHowever, each spray has a different set of essential oils. Relax spray has a calming effect caused by a combination of the lavender, clary sage and ylang ylang. Awake spray contains an energizing blend of ginger, orange and lime. Relieve spray has a cooling effect due to a combination of peppermint and wintergreen. \n\nI use the Awake spray every morning; the Relieve spray mid-day; and the Relax spray before bed to combat “computer shoulder” and “text neck.” \n\n### CBD is all the rage, but there’s some question about safety and efficacy of products at the moment. How would you advise omeone to choose the right product for them and ensure they’re not buying snake oil?\n\n**JT:** I’d recommend buying from trusted vendors who are willing to provide transparency on all of their ingredients.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3986013986013985,"src":"/static/9c757ef7ffd25b82b50bbd51bc3c92bf/14b42/130b2de22d3374a880b4120ac93a4e5a.jpg","srcSet":"/static/9c757ef7ffd25b82b50bbd51bc3c92bf/f836f/130b2de22d3374a880b4120ac93a4e5a.jpg 200w,\n/static/9c757ef7ffd25b82b50bbd51bc3c92bf/2244e/130b2de22d3374a880b4120ac93a4e5a.jpg 400w,\n/static/9c757ef7ffd25b82b50bbd51bc3c92bf/14b42/130b2de22d3374a880b4120ac93a4e5a.jpg 800w,\n/static/9c757ef7ffd25b82b50bbd51bc3c92bf/47498/130b2de22d3374a880b4120ac93a4e5a.jpg 1200w,\n/static/9c757ef7ffd25b82b50bbd51bc3c92bf/0e329/130b2de22d3374a880b4120ac93a4e5a.jpg 1600w,\n/static/9c757ef7ffd25b82b50bbd51bc3c92bf/4b3f4/130b2de22d3374a880b4120ac93a4e5a.jpg 3740w","srcWebp":"/static/9c757ef7ffd25b82b50bbd51bc3c92bf/58556/130b2de22d3374a880b4120ac93a4e5a.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/9c757ef7ffd25b82b50bbd51bc3c92bf/61e93/130b2de22d3374a880b4120ac93a4e5a.webp 200w,\n/static/9c757ef7ffd25b82b50bbd51bc3c92bf/1f5c5/130b2de22d3374a880b4120ac93a4e5a.webp 400w,\n/static/9c757ef7ffd25b82b50bbd51bc3c92bf/58556/130b2de22d3374a880b4120ac93a4e5a.webp 800w,\n/static/9c757ef7ffd25b82b50bbd51bc3c92bf/99238/130b2de22d3374a880b4120ac93a4e5a.webp 1200w,\n/static/9c757ef7ffd25b82b50bbd51bc3c92bf/7c22d/130b2de22d3374a880b4120ac93a4e5a.webp 1600w,\n/static/9c757ef7ffd25b82b50bbd51bc3c92bf/a26f6/130b2de22d3374a880b4120ac93a4e5a.webp 3740w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2790-markdown","title":"Cured Nutrition: Finding Balance With Hemp CBD","slug":"cured-nutrition-finding-balance-with-hemp-cbd","content":"Colorado-based [Cured Nutrition](https://www.hellomd.com/brands/5b71f5da04458900013470bc/cured-nutrition) says it’s on a mission to make the benefits of hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) accessible to all. How and why did you decide to start Cured Nutrition?\n\n**Taylor O’Donnell:** Joe and I met at CU Boulder while studying mechanical engineering. Last April, Joe called me about starting a cannabis project. For many years, Joe had competed in fitness events and decided he wanted to bring cannabis into his world. I’d been working on cannabis projects for almost 10 years in Colorado—cannabis was my passion.\n\nSo, we came together, and after pivoting a couple of times, we started Cured as a hemp-derived CBD company. Together, we’ve seen amazing growth, and we’ll be harvesting our own hemp plants in Boulder, CO, this fall. \n\n### Your company puts an emphasis on the local farms where you source your CBD. Is there a difference in quality from farm to farm, and what should consumers consider when sourcing their CBD products?\n\n**TOD:** We always prefer to use local farms, because it supports the communities we live in. Being able to have a farm close by, we’re able to visit and know where our CBD is coming from. It’s important to us to have hemp that’s organic and free of all chemical fertilizers and pesticides.\n\nWhen we use local farms and labs, we can count on our hemp to be clean, consistent and of the highest quality. We want all of our products to contain as much love as possible, and that’s why we source locally. Consumers should consider where their CBD comes from, if they know the farmer, what methods they use, and most importantly that it’s domestic and free of pesticides and heavy metals. \n\nRELATED: [WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR WHEN BUYING HEMP CBD OIL](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b5e97d0a1805500087db9d9/what-to-watch-out-for-when-buying-hemp-cbd-oil)\n\n### Cured is one of the few hemp-derived CBD companies that seems to have focused on edibles. Interestingly, you have a variety of spices you offer. How and why would someone use a CBD-infused spice?\n\n**TOD:** When we first launched Cured, we knew we wanted to target the health and fitness market. It made sense for us to release a line of seasonings, because of how focused on healthy eating our audience is. Most of them make their own food, and we realized how easily it would be to incorporate CBD into your diet with a line of spices. It’s a very approachable way for someone who’s unfamiliar with CBD to give it a try. \n\nFolks can use Cured spices to make a healthy meal that they’ll eat after working out. As well as making something healthy, the CBD helps with recovery and soreness due to its anti-inflammatory properties. \n\n### Does CBD break down during the cooking process? Does it maintain its efficacy?\n\n![Cured cinnamon & honey spice](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-600b7b27-1e0a-43d4-9ad2-af96491e0f7e/original.png)\n\n**TOD:** We recommend when using Cured spices not to heat over 350 degrees F to avoid vaporization of the CBD. Cured is best when used with a healthy fat as it will bind to fat and be most effective that way. Cured spices can also be added to a dish after it’s been cooked, and on fresh or uncooked food. \n\n### You also offer a CBD product called Cookie Dough. Is it actually raw cookie dough?\n\n**TOD:** Cured Dough is a nut-based, gluten-free, dairy-free and ready-to-eat product. It’s best when used on the go. Cured Dough contains only natural ingredients and contains 30 mg of CBD per packet. \n\n### What is Cured Nutrition’s process for creating new products?\n\n**TOD:** Usually we start with an expert—either our chef or herbalist—and go over the scope of the project. They will start with an initial formulation, which then gets tweaked, tested and sourced before we start production. We will usually send samples of new products to our affiliates to get feedback and make more tweaks to the formula.\n\nAfter we finalize our recipe, then we get our packaging made and start production. All of our products are sourced from the most sustainable and organic ingredients that we can find. \n\n### What are some trends you see within the hemp-derived CBD market, and where do you think the industry is heading?\n\n**TOD:** A major trend that I’ve been seeing is definitely the unoriginality of most of the industry. There aren’t that many people out there making new and unique products, especially in food. I think that eventually people will buy their CBD at Whole Foods in a variety of different forms, including food. But why consume CBD—and specifically CBD derived from the cannabis hemp plant? Because CBD is CBD whether it comes from the cannabis marijuana plant or from cannabis hemp.\n\nJust to be clear: The difference between CBD from cannabis and CBD from hemp is that they come from two different varieties of the _Cannabis sativa_ plant. The former contains a plethora of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component of cannabis, whereas the latter contains 0.3% or less of THC, meaning it’s non-psychoactive. What this also means is hemp may not have the full complement of other cannabinoids and terpenes that the marijuana plant has. \n\nHowever, many are finding high-quality, lab-tested hemp CBD from organic sources to be helpful. So, for those of you who want to get the benefits of CBD, but aren’t interested in consuming cannabis or getting high, then hemp CBD may be the right option for you.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nHere are six reasons you should consider consuming hemp-derived CBD.\n\n### 1. It’s Easy to Find & Purchase Hemp CBD\n\nI’m a big proponent of cannabis legalization and access to the medical properties inherent in the cannabis plant. However, even in legal markets, accessibility to cannabis marijuana can still be an issue. In many legal states, qualifying medical conditions may be restricted or the limited number of dispensaries available may make accessibility an issue. For others, the thought of entering into a dispensary is too daunting.\n\nHemp CBD is more readily available across the United States than CBD derived from cannabis marijuana is. The latter is only permitted to be sold within licensed dispensaries or delivery services in marijuana-legal states. You can find hemp CBD in many different types of places:\n\n* Your acupuncturist’s or chiropractor’s office\n* Your local nutritional store\n* Now in [HelloMD’s curated store](https://www.hellomd.com/products), which delivers nationwide\n\nHemp CBD has many of the same medicinal properties of cannabis marijuana, without a lot of the same restrictions that make purchasing CBD from cannabis marijuana challenging.\n\n### 2. CBD Hemp Topicals Help With a Variety of Skin Conditions—as Well as Skin in General\n\n![CBD hemp topicals help improve sunburns, psoriasis, eczema, acne & foot fungus](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-96ee7102-0272-4ce0-851a-78ba499eafd7/original.jpg)\n\nMany years ago, long before I entered the cannabis industry, I took my three young kids to Hawaii, where each got a terrible sunburn. It was late at night, stores were closed, and the only thing I had on hand was a facial oil where the main ingredient listed was hemp oil. I felt terrible as I slathered their inflamed skin with the oil and hoped they would sleep through the night. \n\nThe next morning when I woke them up, I was shocked to see three faces without sunburns and not one of them was in pain. I’d never heard of hemp oil, so I immediately googled it and read about its anti-inflammatory properties. I instantly became a fan of CBD-based skin topicals and have religiously used it on my own face as well. And yes, I get a lot of compliments on my skin.\n\nSometimes, CBD oil may be labeled as hemp oil, sometimes as CBD, but essentially, they mean the same thing. Some folks swear by combining CBD oil with coconut oil or other oils such as lavender or tea tree oil, which are rich in terpenes. \n\nThat said, CBD is known not only as an anti-inflammatory that can help with sunburns, but also as a topical that effectively deals with tough skin issues such as eczema, psoriasis and acne. CBD is also a great moisturizer. \n\nIn addition, CBD—when used in combination with the terpene caryophyllene oxide—can also work as an effective antifungal. A friend recently battled a nasty foot fungus, which got so bad he could barely walk. I suggested he try CBD oil. Within a few days, his cracked and swollen foot healed to the point that it was barely noticeable.\n\nRELATED: [WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR WHEN BUYING HEMP CBD OIL](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b5e97d0a1805500087db9d9/what-to-watch-out-for-when-buying-hemp-cbd-oil)\n\n### 3. CBD Is a Great Additive to Your Daily Supplement Regime\n\nDoes CBD replace all of your daily vitamin supplements? Well, no, it doesn’t replace other minerals, multivitamins or even your probiotics. CBD does, however, contain extremely unique properties that may make it a great addition to your daily health regime.\n\nCBD’s primary job is to interact with your body’s [endocannabinoid system](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5751cbd970410e000b00003a/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system) (ECS), which is responsible for maintaining homeostasis within all of the other systems in your body. For instance, the ECS is thought to modulate:\n\n* sleep\n* appetite\n* our immune system \n\nRecently, CBD has come into the limelight for being an excellent pain reliever and a powerful anti-inflammatory. CBD also contains powerful antioxidants, more powerful than those found in vitamins C and E. Antioxidants inhibit oxidation, which is what leads to more free radicals that in turn damage our cells. Diets that are rich in antioxidants are linked to reduced risk of diseases like Parkinson’s disease and even arthritis.\n\nCBD, and cannabis in general, has also been shown in research to help improve the [gut biome](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4940133). Overall, CBD is an excellent addition to dietary health supplements due to its wide-ranging list of therapeutic benefits.\n\n### 4. CBD Is an Amazing Stress & Anxiety Reliever\n\n![CBD is a great stress & anxiety reliever](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-724676f9-f9d2-4668-a8f9-c8fcd25653ae/original.jpg)\n\nLet’s face it, we all get stressed out, and for many, chronic anxiety is a way of life. Prolonged feelings of stress can lead to anxiety, which may cause a host of issues including a sense of fear, uneasiness, nausea and insomnia, among other uncomfortable symptoms. New research indicates that [cannabinoids, including CBD, are an excellent way to relieve anxiety](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00213-017-4648-z) naturally without the nasty side effects common to many pharmaceuticals. It’s thought that CBD specifically [boosts serotonin receptors](https://www.cannabisreports.com/cannabis-studies/cannabidiol-induces-rapid-acting-antidepressant-like-effects-and-enhances-cortical-5-htglutamate-neurotransmission-role-of-5-ht1a-receptors), which can help reduce anxiety overall.\n\nCBD may provide immediate relief for anxiety by relaxing muscles, easing feelings of bodily pain and providing an overall sense of calm. Anxiety-related disorders that seem to respond positively to CBD are: \n\n* panic disorders\n* social phobias\n* general anxiety disorders\n* obsessive compulsive disorder\n* PTSD\n\nAnecdotally, CBD also seems to work well for people under immediate pressure, like when they’re giving a presentation at work or dealing with a looming deadline. \n\nCBD helped me with my own anxiety, as there was a time when I suffered from panic attacks. My doctor had put me on propranolol, which calmed me, but also left me feeling out of sorts. Unfortunately, panic attacks put you into a downward spiral, because it leaves you wondering when it will happen next. And once you start thinking about it, the thought of a panic attack is often enough to bring the next one on.\n\nBut, after starting on CBD for my migraines, I noticed an amazing side effect: My anxiety levels dropped significantly. After many years of taking CBD, I can easily say I rarely, if ever, feel anxiety. In fact, I attribute CBD for allowing me to feel comfortable giving presentations on stage to hundreds of people—without any of the intense feelings of anxiety that used to plague me. \n\n### 5. CBD Promotes New Cell Growth Even as it Protects Your Brain\n\nCBD helps promote new growth of neurons within the brain, which is great news for your brain. Researchers from a hospital in Madrid recently published a study regarding CBD’s neuroprotective qualities stating that, “[their] findings demonstrate that [CBD exerts robust neuroprotective effects](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23587650).”\n\nCBD also seems to decrease inflammation in the brain, which is good news for those who endure traumatic head injuries. So far, it appears CBD is not only a good preventative, protecting against damage, but may also encourage healing.\n\nInterestingly, the U.S. government has a patent, #6,630,507, which states, “cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties,” and also that they have “particular application[s] as neuroprotectants—for example, in limiting neurological damage following … stroke and trauma, the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, [etc.].”\n\n### 6. CBD Helps You Maintain a Healthy Body Weight\n\n`embed: https://www.instagram.com/p/BgcMfpwlYgx/?utm_source=ig_embed`\n\nAfter taking CBD for over a year for migraine prevention, I started to notice something extraordinary. It seemed I was able to maintain a much lower body weight—something that hadn’t come easily beforehand.\n\nIn fact, by consuming CBD along with exercise and a healthy diet, I dropped two pant sizes and have since maintained the same weight I was at in my early 20s. There’s all sorts of evidence that as we age our metabolism slows down considerably, and yet suddenly, weight gain wasn’t an issue for me anymore. I began to wonder why.\n\nAccording to [World Health](https://worldhealth.net/news/cbd-and-metabolism/), \n“CBD stimulates genes and proteins, which play roles in increasing fat breakdown; CBD can boost activity and numbers of mitochondria increasing the body’s ability to burn calories; and CBD decreases expression of proteins which are involved in creating new fat cells within the body.”\n\nA new Korean study published in _Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry_ focused on CBD’s ability to prevent obesity. Researchers found the cannabinoid was able to better break down and increase the oxidation of fat, increase the number and activation of mitochondria (read: it was able to burn more calories), and decrease overall fat generation.\n\nLastly, it appears that CBD may create what’s known as “fat browning.” Essentially, this means white fat, which stores energy, is converted to brown fat, which burns it.\n\nStill not convinced you should give hemp CBD a try? I encourage you to read our [articles covering all things hemp](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness?category=hemp-related)—from 101s to spotlights on top hemp brands—to help you decide if it’s right for you. Why did it choose to create hemp-based CBD products?\n\n**Chris Husong:** A certain global awareness is deeply ingrained in our company culture. We believe hemp is good for the environment and good for our bodies. \n\nSome would say our co-founder Paul Benhaim is the original hemp entrepreneur, or “hempreneur.” In the early 1990s, Paul created the first successful hemp nutritional bar in the United Kingdom. Since then, he has penned 10 titles on hemp’s myriad uses and consulted for or founded hemp businesses, including Elixinol and our sister company, Hemp Foods Australia.\n\nToday, Paul is the CEO of EXL (ASX: EXL), our parent company, which IPO’d on the Australian Securities Exchange in January 2018. \n\nThis deep, decades-long relationship with hemp that began with Paul informs everything we do. We continue his vision and deeply believe in the full power of the hemp plant. This is why we use full-spectrum hemp oil, and why we’ve committed to growing our own hemp in Colorado.\n \n### Are there health benefits that come from consuming hemp CBD? And if so, do your customers come back to you with positive feedback?\n \n**CH:** Our customers come to Elixinol either to expand their wellness—for example, better sleep, increased focus, fitness recovery and performance—or because they’re contending with specific health concerns and want to try something new and promising. \n\nWe take our customers’ concerns a step further, making a medical doctor available to work with customers. As far as I know, we’re the only CBD company to do this. Dr. Philip Blair is a practicing physician and retired U.S. army colonel who’s passionate about helping his patients. He has conducted exciting preclinical trials for CBD and several conditions and he sees promising results—universally, including those that even he didn’t expect.\n\nDr. Blair gives presentations at conferences around the world often kicking them off with his famous saying, “With CBD, I only see side benefits … ” \n\nRegardless of why they come to us, customers tell us repeatedly they see immediate improvement. Our customers feel restored and hopeful. I’ve lost count of how many people have told us they feel like they got their life back, and that’s what keeps us going.\n \n### Where do you source your hemp CBD from?\n\n**CH:** Starting in 2017, we increased our domestic, or U.S., hemp grows. Before 2017, we sourced our hemp from European farmers. But we wanted to support hemp in the U.S., and we felt it was important to be closer to the grows and have more control over the process. \n\nSo, in 2018, we went into the agriculture business and are now growing much of our own hemp in Colorado. This gives us complete seed-to-sale control over the process. And it ensures we have not only the quantity of full-spectrum hemp oil we need, but also the quality full-spectrum hemp oil our customers have come to expect from Elixinol.\n\nEvery single one of our products are extracted using the cleanest method available: supercritical CO2. Supercritical CO2 extraction is a familiar process for foods, such as hops and coffee. We prefer it, because it’s a tried-and-true method that produces a pure, full-spectrum hemp oil.\n\nNow, making full-spectrum CBD is more expensive, but the result is so much better for our customers, and that’s why we go the extra mile. I got my start in the hemp CBD industry fighting for reliable quality controls. I know how important it is for customers to have the peace of mind—and the feeling of relief—that is the result of finally finding a product they can trust. If I had to use one word to describe Elixinol’s commitment to quality control, it would be: uncompromising. \n\nWe also go above and beyond with our labeling standards. Each Elixinol product is produced with batch and lot numbers to cross-check and guarantee the consistent quality of our products. This gives our customers peace of mind. It also means, in the unlikely event that an issue should ever arise, we can do a rapid recall and notify customers immediately. \n\n### You have a comprehensive menu of hemp CBD products. Tell us what your most popular products are and why?\n\n![Elixinol Liposomes with hemp CBD oil](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-fff30648-cee9-467d-95e7-d5b0a0fc7e7f/original.png)\n \n**CH:** The employee favorite is Elixinol’s Liposomes. Our Liposomes taste great and are formulated to be fast-absorbing and convenient. Some people take a couple of drops under the tongue, while other folks just add it to their water. Either way, it’s great for when you’re on the go or to just get CBD throughout the day. \n\nOur most popular customer product is the Elixinol capsules. They’re easy to add to an existing supplement regimen, and they’re discreet—which many customers in more conservative areas appreciate. \n \n### Other than CBD, are there any additional ingredients that you’d like to highlight?\n\n**CH:** Because we believe in the power of the entire hemp plant, we don’t have to add much to our products—nor do we want to. We let the full-spectrum hemp oil shine through. We grow and manufacture with care to preserve the hundreds of amazing plant compounds that make hemp such a powerful plant. We never add synthetics, and our hemp comes from organic farms. \n\nOur full-spectrum products contain CBD, of course, but they also have the full range of terpenes, flavonoids and cannabinoids available in the hemp plant—keeping THC naturally under 0.3%, of course. Research into the entourage effect is extremely promising, and tracks closely with what we know about plant nutrition: that whole food sources of nutrients are generally best.\n\nOur tinctures contain either MCT (medium-chain triglyceride) oil, which is credited with being a metabolism-boosting superfood on its own, or coconut oil. And both are excellent partners for lipophilic cannabinoids like CBD. \n\n### When someone is new to CBD, what should they look out for when selecting products for themselves?\n \n**CH:** Thanks for asking this question. It’s important that people understand what to look for in CBD brands, because there are some bad actors out there ruining it for those of us who take the health and wellness of our customers very seriously. \n\nFirst and foremost, customers should demand evidence of third-party, independent, lab potency and purity results for any CBD product. Heck, they should demand test results from all supplement manufacturers, as the industry is largely unregulated.\n\nWe call these certificates of analysis, or COAs. In these reports, customers should verify CBD content, little or no THC. And they should test free of mold, pesticides and heavy metals. Reputable CBD companies will include this information on their websites or will offer it to consumers upon request. We include it right on our main product page, so people know up front what they’re getting. \n\nCustomers should also ask about the source of the hemp or hemp oil used in their favorite CBD products. The United States and European Union are ideal; stay away from hemp and hemp oil products coming out of China, which doesn’t adhere to the same quality controls. If the CBD company doesn’t say where it’s sourcing its hemp, that’s a definite red flag. \n\nWe believe it’s also important to understand whether the product is full spectrum or not. Isolates, by definition, isolate the CBD molecule by heavily processing the hemp plant. Not only does this limit CBD’s effectiveness by removing all of the other cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids, the harsh chemical extraction process is almost totally unnecessary. \n\nWe’ve seen companies that use isolates say they have a whole-plant product, because they use parts of the whole hemp plant. That’s so discouraging to see, because reputable companies know the terms “whole plant” or “full spectrum” refer to using the full range of chemical compounds—terpenes, flavonoids and cannabinoids—available in the hemp plant.\n\nAlways ask whether the product is full spectrum or isolate to get the real answer. \n\n### Your company has a fantastic program of giving back to charity. Can you please describe this to us?\n \n**CH:** We’ve been supporting charities since our start, because it’s important to us, and we know it’s important to our customers. Everyone wants to feel as though they’re contributing to organizations doing good work.\n\nThe way our “Giving Back” program works is when customers check out, they can choose from several different charities for veterans, autism, head injuries and more. Elixinol then donates 5% of their purchase amount to the nonprofit of the customer’s choice.\n\nTo date, these customer contributions have added up to over $1 million dollars donated. It’s such an easy way to let our customers direct our charitable giving, so we know we’re always putting our money where their hearts are.
