Luxury brand Lord Jones is leading the way with high-end branding and a focus on patient health and wellness. Voted “Best Low Dose Edible,” by _High Times_, and featured in fashion magazine _[Vogue](http://www.vogue.com/article/sigur-ros-pot-cannabis-edible-candy-lord-jones)_, the creators of Lord Jones have successfully bridged the world of cannabis health with the world of fashion. Founders Cindy Capobianco and Rob Rosenheck are poised and ready for the cannabis boom of 2018 as they evolve and expand their line of edibles and topicals.\r\n\r\n### From Fashion to Food to Cannabis\r\n\r\nJust a few years ago, when Cindy and Rob brought their high-end medicated candies to shops around LA, the dispensary managers said “that’s beautiful, I don’t know what to do with it—it’s too expensive.” The couple was a few years ahead of the curve, but now the industry's catching up. “A few years ago, everything was about the cheapest product,” Rob says, “Our peers weren't finding products that were speaking to them; brands that were clearly labeled aspirational, transparent, effective, safe, and stood for quality.” \r\n\r\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\r\n\r\nThe creation of the Lord Jones brand is a product of Rob and Cindy’s professional backgrounds and passion for the cannabis plant. In their previous life, the married couple ran a creative agency together for 10 years, working on fashion and lifestyle brands with clients like Gap and Banana Republic. They learned about the food business after they helped launch Lara Bars and ended up working on other organic food brands for General Mills. They always kept their client list small in order to work with brands they believe in, saying “Every brand we worked on we wanted to be a consumer of that brand, live the brand, champion the brand—they were all brands we believed in. That’s what was behind Lord Jones. We wanted to create a brand that we wanted to use and that other people who care about quality wanted to use.”\r\n\r\n`embed: https://www.instagram.com/p/BYGsS3UjCki/` \r\n</br>\r\n### Wellness Beyond Beauty\r\n\r\nThere are three tenets behind Lord Jones: a superior brand experience, the finest non-cannabis ingredients and formulations, and cannabis superiority. This can be seen in the brightly colored, elegantly designed packaging. Add to that the Sigurberry edible (a collaboration with the band Sigur Ros), which was launched at a Billboard-worthy Los Angeles [sound bath](http://www.billboard.com/articles/business/7767912/sound-bathing-with-sigur-ros-and-their-lord-jones-edibles) event. The band played live at the historic LA theatre Neuehouse while patients enhanced with Lord Jones edibles laid on mats and admired the pulsing light installation.\r\n\r\nWhile the Lord Jones branding is eye-catching and beautiful, it’s not all about looks. The true differentiators of their products is a result of focusing on the use of cannabis to target specific ailments. When aspiring cannabis marketers ask Cindy and Rob for advice on getting into the cannabis industry, they tell them knowledge about the plant is extremely important. “If you’re going to be in this business on the branding side you need to understand what you’re talking about in a way that’s different than any other industry. No one wants a tourist who just says ‘I can make that pretty.’”\r\n\r\n`embed: https://www.instagram.com/p/BVQQ2DYDEe7/` \r\n</br>\r\n### Cannabis Caregivers\r\n\r\nIn the beginning, Lord Jones created a nonprofit collective in order to sell their products, and ended up becoming caregivers. Cindy says, “We didn’t set out to become caregivers, but many patients who had never used cannabis got in touch and we started helping people who had never used cannabis at all or not in 30 years.” This constant interaction with patients and their needs has had a huge effect on the products. “We’ve learned more from our patients than anyone else in this business. The fact that we’re caregivers with them has shaped our product in ways that we had never anticipated.”\r\n\r\nTheir patients live with a variety of conditions, including migraines, autoimmune disease, cancer, AIDS, HIV and various skin conditions. They see groups of migraine sufferers using both the topical and the high CBD gumdrops for their headaches, while post-op or post-accident patients who can’t take opioids experience significantly diminished pain after taking their gumdrops and using their topical. Cindy listens to these patients “crying on the phone saying they never thought they would feel relief again.”\r\n\r\nWorking so closely with patients helps Cindy and Rob learn how their product can be used and also informs formulations going forward. “Many of the products we’re launching soon are inspired by our patients and their needs and their ailments.”\r\n\r\n### Terpene-Infused CBD Topicals\r\n\r\nThere are three different versions of the Lord Jones topical: a [5:1 Pain and Wellness Body Lotion](https://www.hellomd.com/marijuana-undefined/5-1-pain-and-wellness-formula-body-lotion) which contains 100 mg CBD, a [1:1 Pain and Wellness Formula](https://www.hellomd.com/marijuana-undefined/1-1-pain-and-wellness-formula-body-lotion) and a [Pure CBD Body Lotion](https://www.hellomd.com/marijuana-undefined/pain-wellness-pure-cbd-lotion). The lotions contain “full spectrum whole plant medicine for maximum pain relief and aid to skin conditions.” The scented version celebrates the terpenes of the plant with notes of hep, sage, mint and green citrus, creating a bright fragrance with far-reaching appeal.\r\n\r\nCindy knows that topicals are often used by people new to cannabis and they want to make them feel as comfortable as possible with what they’re putting on their body. The topicals also contain Frescolat, a natural cooling agent, so you immediately feel a cooling sensation when applied, letting patients know exactly there they put the lotion on their body. The user friendly product design is also seen in the vacuum-pump feature, which dispenses exactly 1 mL per pump, containing 2 mg CBD and 0.4 mg THC in the 5:1 formulation. \r\n\r\n`embed: https://www.instagram.com/p/BUhWpxqjwQR/` \r\n</br>\r\nVeronica Brooks, a recognizable customer service specialist at HelloMD and her mother use the topicals for knee pain and arthritis, respectively. “This is the perfect product for patients with sore muscles, as the topical is a nice alternative for those who do not want any psychoactive effects. This pain and wellness lotion delivers rapid relief, and has quickly become a favorite in my mom’s cabinet,” she says. \r\n\r\nThe topicals are also effective for patients with more serious conditions like fibromyalgia, lupus, migraines and chronic pain, but also work for sunburns, bug bites and sore feet. Even [celebrity stylists have caught on](http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/how-cannabis-beauty-products-could-change-red-carpet-game-967518) to the topical trend, using the CBD lotion on the soles of their clients’s feet before spending a long night on the red carpet in high heels. You can get a taste for the versatile uses of the topicals from their [Instagram feed](https://www.instagram.com/thelordjones/), which is full of patient testimonials claiming “the relief was instant!” and “my neck was pain-free for the first time in eight years.” \r\n\r\nRELATED: [TOP 5 MARIJUANA PRODUCTS FOR CHRONIC PAIN](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/top-5-marijuana-products-for-chronic-pain)\r\n\r\n### Artisanal Edibles\r\n\r\nThere are [six different formulations](http://www.lordjones.com/browse) of Lord Jones edibles, including 5, 10, or 20 mg THC, with 5:1 CBD, and pure CBD options. They have created many options, including low-dose options, so people can easily find the right dose for themselves. \r\n\r\n“With only 2 mg of THC, these gum drops are perfect for [microdosing](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/microdosing-a-better-way-to-take-cannabis) throughout the day, ” says our Director of Operations, Ashleigh Jessup, who appreciates the consumer-friendly dosing capabilities.\r\n\r\nThe ability to titrate dosage also led to the decision to make candy over baked goods because “candy is a more elegant form of food,” and “transforming the chemical state of sugar is math and chemistry more in line with dosing.” They are mindfully designed so you can eat one full piece of candy as a dose.\r\n\r\nTrue to their word, the candies are all natural, handmade in small batches and can stand up to sweets made by a fine candy maker. The active ingredients include THC extracts drawn from the finest California-grown cannabis, phytocannabinoid-rich CBD extracts from specially sourced organic hemp and terpenes to ensure the medical benefits of the whole plant entourage effect. All of their products use whole plant medicine, and the CBD products are designed for health and wellness, rather than psychoactive benefit. With their Lord Jones products, Cindy and Rob are making cannabis medicine incredibly appealing, approachable and effective.\r\n\r\n### Sound Baths & Spas\r\n\r\nThe Lord Jones brand is built on wellness as a lifestyle, and beyond products, Rob and Cindy are creating wellness experiences. Their first medicated sound bath was over a year ago, and since then they have hosted multiple sound baths and yoga classes at different events. Her handcrafted cold water hash, sustainably grown cannabis, and artfully crafted elixirs are created through her love of nature and dedication to sharing organic horticulture. I had the pleasure with speaking to Billie about her background as an herbalist, her relationship to cannabis plants, and the art of crafting plant medicine.\n\nBillie will be serving her hand-crafted herbal elixirs at [HelloMD’s Laughter Haven event](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/hellomd-s-laughter-haven-an-evening-of-cannabis-comedy) on Oct. 5, 2017 at San Francisco's The Midway.\n\n`embed: https://www.instagram.com/p/BZolP_bARwo/`\n\n### How did you start working with plants? \n\nThe ability to tune in and listen to plants came from playing in nature so much as a kid. I grew up in Santa Cruz mountains - we were outdoor kids. When I was very little I loved making flower petal water by soaking fragrant flowers to infuse the essential oils into the water. There is an innate trust and connection to the power of plants and herbal medicine that has always thrived in me. Plants have always been my friends.\n\n### What’s your background as an herbalist?\n\nWhen I spent about a year on the island of Crete in Greece I completely fell in love with herbal medicinal studies. Malotíra (mountain tea) and Faskómilo (Sage) had me hooked. I couldn't get enough of the very powerful Mediterranean herbs of Crete. I snuck loads back with me! During that time, I discovered the herbalist Juliette de Beracley Levy. Her wild and enchanting stories of traveling through the Mediterranean with practically just a few sprigs of herbs to keep her and her children free of ailments or disease completely fascinated me. I wanted to be her!\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### How did you transition into working with cannabis? \n\nI believe the spirit of cannabis chooses who works with her. I moved to California from New York City in 2008 and I immediately started working as cannabis trimmer. Working with cannabis after working with other herbs felt like an honor. \n\nThe farmers I worked for loved my work ethic and enthusiasm and invited me be a part of the cold water hash team. I helped develop a larger scale production system for ice water hash. We experimented with a lot of machinery and I found that using my hands worked the best, producing the greatest yield and the greatest quality. \n\n### What inspired you to create Emerald Alchemy? \n\nI’ve always fiercely loved my independence, autonomy and a good thrilling adventure. Working for myself just makes sense and the challenge of creating a business keepsme engaged with that independent, creative and edgy young spirit there.\n\nThe name Emerald Alchemy came to me in 2013 after I harvested my first crop of high CBD AC/DC strain. ‘Emerald’ represents the heart and ‘Alchemy’ represents the powerful transformational shift that happens when we act out of love from the heart. I believe our most powerful medicine is loving kindness. I created this company out of my love for life and this precious planet.\n\n`embed: https://www.instagram.com/p/BV0br1UA1iG/`\n\n### What’s your approach to growing cannabis?\n\nI have a spiritual approach to growing cannabis! It is such a special treat to be an organic cannabis farmer because cannabis is so extremely communicative and receptive. I feel like truly farming cannabis in alignment with nature you must get in touch with an innate intuitive knowing that is very spiritual. While we are farming cannabis we are also farming healthy soil ecology and farming ourselves as healthy stewards of the craft. Training staff to care for cannabis gardens is teaching an art. To be fully engage with the changing weather, microclimates, soil ecology and the fast paced cycles of flowering cannabis varieties is a beautiful spiritual dance. Many cannabis farmers feel as though they are married to their plants!\n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS, YOGA & RELAXATION, AN INTERVIEW WITH DEE DUSSAULT](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/597798584ce06012ff1d1641/cannabis-yoga-and-relaxation-an-interview-with-dee-dussault)\n\n\n### What are your grow methods?\n\nMy cultivation methods are pretty simple but require a lot of listening. I’m a sun lover! I like to grow in beds outside with hoop houses over them. I do year round cultivation. I always get annoyed when we have to use supplemental light. A lot of hiccups happen with artificial light but it’s good for freshness of product and business to grow year round.\n\nOne of the cool things about my process is I’ve figured out a way to save all the excess hash water and feed it back to the plants. That’s one of the best foods you can feed your plants because all those phytonutrients and water soluble terpenes are in the water. \n\n### What strains do you grow? \n\nI grow quite a lot of the 20:1 AC/DC strain. I really love the 3:1 Cannatonic strain. I grew Orange Cookies strain last year. I always schedule in the AC/DC strain and depending on what is available to me from my colleagues nurseries or what mother plants I am cultivating.\n\n### Why do you grow CBD strains?\n\nOnce I was educated about the medicinal benefits of CBD, I was all in and I made it my mission. I started hearing about CBD around 2011 and I’m very sensitive to THC, so it was so exciting to me when I tried a CBD flower. I found the genetics which was really hard to get back then so I had the specialist Lawrence Ringo introduce me to the right people.\n\n### How is your cold water hash prepared? \n\nMy process is entirely handmade. We use no machinery at all. With hand-stirred hash, it’s all about having a holistic relationship at every step of the process so we can guarantee the quality of the product.\n\nIt’s quite an experience to make hash on my farm. We wear enormous thick gloves up to our shoulder and rubber waterproof goulashes for the ice agitation portion of the process. The engagement that comes with completely handmade processes allows for customizing each batch of hash to the variety and signature of the individual plant material. It’s totally an art!\n\n### How do you formulate your tinctures? What makes them different than others?\n\nFormulating tinctures is like writing poetry or music. Creating herbal combinations involves an incredible amount of knowledge and I do a lot of research before I decide on a specific formula melody. Each herb wants to be extracted in it’s own way. The ethanol I use for extraction is certified organic made from organic grapes. I think what sets me apart is that I am creating works of art. Therefore each formula and product I create stands apart for it uniqueness.\n\n### What is the story behind your cannabis elixirs.\n\nThe Elixir Collection is infused with a micro dose of cannabis in order to balance out the expression of the other herbs in the formula. The Elixirs are designed to work as a holistic support with cannabis as one of the integral herbs in the formula. Cannabis has such a dominant expression I choose to lower the dosing simply to achieve harmony in the formula.\n\nThe Elixirs are incredible in an evening libation for a nightly healing ritual. We created some Canna Cocktail recipes for the Elixir collection and on [Sava](https://www.getsava.com/), a statewide delivery service in California.\n\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. That kind of balance between opposites is everywhere in nature—and that may help to explain the interplay between THC and CBD, the two most plentiful compounds in the marijuana plant. Although these two substances appear to have opposing effects, in combination each [affects the action of the other](https://www.zamnesia.com/blog-cannabinoid-syngergy-how-cbd-and-thc-work-together-n719) to keep the marijuana high from spinning out of control—and create some potent healing benefits.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### THC: Marijuana’s Most Famous Compound\n\nTHC (officially known as delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) is the most prevalent of more than one hundred compounds found in the marijuana plant. It’s followed closely by cannabidiol, or CBD. Separately and together, these two compounds are the cannabis ingredients to be most closely studied for their applications in treating a wide range of health conditions ranging from cancer to PTSD. \n\nTHC is probably the best known of marijuana’s many compounds. Its psychoactive properties are responsible for the cannabis “high” enjoyed by recreational users—and for keeping marijuana on the DEA’s list of what they consider to be highly addictive and dangerous drugs. \n\n For most users, that high delivers a feeling of relaxation and euphoria. But for others, THC can cause less pleasant reactions—nervousness, anxiety and paranoia. The likelihood of those kinds of negative effects rises when a user consumes cannabis grown from strains that are very high in THC. Some studies also suggest that long term or extensive use of THC can permanently affect brain functions such as memory or cognition.\n\nBut THC isn’t just good for a good time as it also has potent healing properties. The endocannabinoid system is a vast network of natural cannabinoid receptors that occur throughout the body. These receptors can be filled by cannabinoids manufactured by the body itself, or by introducing cannabis from outside sources like smoking or consuming it. \n\nThe body’s CB1 and CB2 receptors are abundant in the brain, organs and tissues, and THC binds with them in ways that are nearly identical to natural endocannabinoids such as anandamide and 2-AG. That means THC can be beneficial in treating a wide range of health conditions affecting both body and mind—especially when it’s [accompanied by CBD](http://pureanalytics.net/blog/2012/02/19/how-thc-and-cbd-work-together/).\n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS 101: THC vs CBD](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/57a17dc121a3ad00076694fc/cannabis-101-thc-vs-cbd)\n\n### CBD Works In Many Ways\n\nCBD is the second most common compound found in cannabis, and although it lacks the psychoactive properties of THC, many studies have found that it has numerous whole body health benefits, such as reducing inflammation and boosting immune system functions. Available in forms such as oil concentrates, edibles and even skin creams and ointments, CBD can help reduce chronic pain, ease the symptoms of autoimmune disorders and migraines, and reduce the nausea associated with cancer treatment.\n\nBut while THC binds directly with the body’s own endocannabinoid receptors in the brain, central nervous system and other organs and tissues, CBD [works in more mysterious ways](https://www.projectcbd.org/science/cannabis-pharmacology/how-cbd-works). Whether it’s the raw plant form known as CBDA or the extracted version CBD, this compound doesn’t directly bind with either of the body’s cannabinoid receptors. Rather, it either enhances or inhibits the activity of a long list of other receptors and channels that affect processes ranging from the proliferation of cells (particularly cancer cells) to the uptake of the calming neurotransmitter GABA.\n\n### CBD Reins In THC’s Psychoactivity\n\nCBD also has the ability to act allosterically on some kinds of receptors. That is, it can change the receptor’s shape to affect its behavior, either positively or negatively. And in that capacity, CBD can affect the endocannabinoid receptor CB1, even though it doesn’t bind directly to it. As a negative allosteric modulator, CBD weakens the ability of CB1 receptors to bind to THC, and that limits the psychoactive effects of THC while preserving its therapeutic qualities.\n\n### The Entourage Effect: Better Together\n\nThe “entourage effect” is what happens when multiple elements work together to enhance the positive effects of them all. When THC and CBD are used in combination, they produce [much greater \nbenefits](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20053780) than when used alone. And studies reveal that those benefits in turn are amplified when the whole marijuana plant is used, rather than isolated extracts of THC and CBD. The combination of THC’s direct effects on the endocannabinoid system and CBD’s activity on other kinds of receptors accounts for the most potent healing properties of cannabis.\n\nCBD helps to prolong the effects of THC therapies for cancer and other conditions. Because CBD is able to weaken CB1’s ability to bind with THC, it slows the breakdown of THC in the liver, so that the effects of the treatment last longer. Studies also reveal that the combination of THC and CBD is more able to [enhance the effectiveness of radiation \ntherapy](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25398831) to treat high-grade glioma—an aggressive and usually inoperative cancer of the brain—than either of these compounds alone.\n\nResearch also suggests that THC may be helpful in reducing the anxiety and hyperarousal common in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), precisely because that psychoactive high produces feelings of relaxation and can also help eliminate negative memories. But THC is more effective when combined with CBD, which keeps THC’s psychoactivity under control, so that its negative psychoactive effects don’t undermine treatment.\n\nTHC and CBD alone both have their own medicinal benefits. In states like Colorado, cosmetic and wellness businesses are finding ways to bring cannabis into their services by offering massages with infused oils and facials using hemp seed oil to their customers. Other brands like Los Angeles-based company Lord Jones have been catapulted into the mainstream by celebrity stylists like Karla Welch who has used their [CBD-infused cream on her clients](http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/magazine-feature/7662282/cannabis-beauty-products-red-carpet) during the Golden Globes to help with aching feet from wearing heels.\n\nThough there’s some confusion about whether or not you can get high from applying marijuana-infused topicals, people can rest assure that there will be no psychoactive affects.\n\nRELATED:[5 Ways to Use Cannabis for Summer Skincare](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/57b73a13066417000be2b2db/5-ways-to-use-cannabis-for-summer-skincare)\n\n### Cannabis Works Internally and Externally\n\nHemp seed oil, THC and CBD are all components being included in beauty products that are helping to broaden people’s understanding of just how many ways cannabis can be useful. Most people are familiar with the effects of THC and CBD when it’s being consumed orally during smoking, vaping or eating edibles. The two primary compounds can relax the muscles, help reduce body pain, revive an ailing appetite and even help you get a good night’s sleep. Yet when used externally, those three compounds have properties that can help hydrate the skin, prevent or reduce wrinkles when used in facial oils and lotions as well as ease uncomfortable pain and get rid of tension in the body in topicals, bath bombs and massage oils.\n\n### The Cannabis Home Spa\n\nEven if you don’t make it onto the red carpet or live in a state where you can conveniently go to a spa that offer cannabis-infused services, you can still get a taste of what it’s like to get the canna-beauty treatment. Just like stay-cations, you can also reimagine a spa experience in your home with some products you may be able to find at your local dispensary and even some you can try to DIY at home.\n\nLight some candles, find something comfortable to wear and start planning how you incorporate some of these products into a luxurious day of pampering and self-care. \n\n### Facial Masks\n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/59b87cdfd5d69e1783948b21/embedded_images/59b87e75d5d69e14f0948b53/Screen_Shot_2017-09-12_at_5.38.10_PM.png) \n\nYou can buy or DIY a cannabis-infused facial mask that can help soften and brighten your skin. If you’re making it at home, you can use infused olive or coconut oil combined with other ingredients that are good for your skin like honey, yogurt or even avocado. Try looking up some recipes for your specific skin type for the best results. \n\nVideo: [RELAX WITH A WEED FACIAL](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5H4PwCtbj4)\n\n### Face Oils\n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/59b87cdfd5d69e1783948b21/embedded_images/59b8801e8d45171628753606/hemp.jpg)\n\nThe Pure offers a hemp based facial oil. \n\nLook for a facial moisturizer made with hemp seed oil to nourish your skin after washing and exfoliating your face. It’s chock full of essential fatty acids that will help you look refreshed, tighten loose fine lines and wrinkles, and make your skin look more plump. If you’re prone to oily skin, try using a smaller amount to keep your skin from looking greasy.\n\n### Topicals \n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/59b87cdfd5d69e1783948b21/embedded_images/59b87e76d5d69e14f0948b54/Screen_Shot_2017-09-12_at_5.39.51_PM.png) \n\nTopicals can come in a number of forms including creams, oils or salves. They are excellent for pain, sore muscles, stiffness and tenderness which make them a natural follow-up to a nice, long bath to really get your body into some deep relaxation. Try massaging some into tense shoulders, achy calves or the soles of your feet.\n\n### Bath Bombs\n\nThere are companies that offer bath bombs in a range of pretty colors that you can choose from or you can make your own at home using an infused oil of your choice (almond, coconut, olive, etc) or tincture. Just find a bath bomb recipe (like [this one](http://popsci.com/how-to-make-your-own-bath-bombs)) and replace the regular oil base with the same amount of infused oil. \n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. But do the benefits humans see from cannabis extend to their animal companions too? There isn’t an easy answer just yet – tight government restrictions limit cannabis research not only for human ailments, but also for veterinary medicine.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Animals Have Endocannabinoids\n\nThe human body is equipped with an extensive network of endocannabinoid receptors – cells that respond not only to cannabis-like molecules naturally produced by the body, but also to cannabis compounds such as THC and CBD. But research in the early 1990s, when the endocannabinoid system was discovered, revealed that any animal with a backbone, which includes not only mammals but also reptiles, birds, amphibians and fish, most likely have some form of that system as well. That made it possible to create animal models for studying the effects of cannabis, and those results could be extrapolated to humans, though not necessarily to other animals.\n\nRELATED: [WHAT IS THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system)\n\nThe fact that mammals and other vertebrates in general [have endocannabinoid receptors](http://www.petmd.com/dog/general-health/can-dogs-benefit-medical-cannabis) makes it likely that animals such as dogs, cats, or horses – and even fish and birds - could benefit from cannabis treatments in ways similar to humans. And it appears that they can – but getting and using cannabis for animals becomes complicated.\n\n`embed: https://www.instagram.com/p/BYy6CKhgBSD/`\n \n\n\n### Restrictions Hamper Research and Access\n\nVeterinarians and pet people alike have reported considerable [anecdotal evidence](https://www.rover.com/blog/medical-marijuana-for-dogs/)\nthat medical marijuana can help pets suffering from conditions like arthritis, seizures and cancer. In most of those cases, someone gave a beloved pet a dose of their own medical cannabis when it seemed that no other treatments for the animal’s condition were working – and that often led to either a cure for the condition or a significant reduction of symptoms.\n\nBut it isn’t [legal](https://www.avma.org/news/javmanews/pages/130615a.aspx)\nanywhere in the US for a veterinarian to prescribe medical marijuana for pets in distress. To date, 29 states and the District of Columbia have voted to legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes. In those states, it’s possible to buy a variety of cannabis products of varying strengths with a doctor’s referral. But veterinarians are generally prohibited from making the same kind of referral for their patients under any circumstances.\n\nEven veterinarians who advocate for medical cannabis for animals acknowledge that using it can be risky. Not enough research has been done to determine exactly how compounds like THC affect various animal species, or what dosage is best for creatures of different sizes and health conditions.\n\nOne reason for this, according to some veterinarians, is that the veterinary community has been slow to take an interest in cannabis for medicinal purposes. But another reason is one that has hampered broader research on the human applications of cannabis too: tight government regulations on all aspects of studying medical applications of cannabis.\n\nThe Drug Enforcement Administration still lists marijuana as a Schedule I drug, right up there with heroin, LSD and magic mushrooms in its most restricted classification, reserved for substances with a high potential for addiction and no demonstrated medical applications. That classification makes it difficult to conduct federally funded studies to demonstrate medical applications of cannabis for both people and pets. And relatively few veterinary schools and private researchers are proposing studies of their own to advance the use of medical marijuana for pets, even though existing evidence suggests that it could have [powerful benefits](http://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/cannabis-dog-can-help/)\n\n\n### CBD Products: Marijuana or Hemp? \n\nEven though medical cannabis may be hard to come by for pets, one of its compounds isn’t. THC is the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, and its most abundant compound. But cannabidiol, or CBD, is also plentiful, and it has no psychoactive properties. \n\nCBD is often used for treating conditions such as chronic pain, nausea and lack of appetite, and anxiety – and it’s widely available for treating animals with those conditions too. But there’s a catch. The CBD in medicinal products such as oils, salves, creams and treats that are marketed for animals comes from hemp, not from marijuana.\n\nThe marijuana plant, cannabis sativa, is home to over a hundred compounds that work together to provide its benefits. But only the buds, leaves and resin of strains that contain psychoactive THC make up what is usually understood as “marijuana.” \n\n`embed: https://www.instagram.com/p/BV2ociDgGqr/`\n\n\nHemp comes from cannabis sativa, too, but only from varieties that have no significant amounts of THC. Hemp does contain CBD, though, and that means it can be made into a variety of products that offer health benefits that are similar to those provided by true “medical marijuana.” \n\nSome studies suggest CBD and THC work best in combination, but hemp based CBD-alone products are freely marketed and sold without the restrictions, however many consider this to be a legal gray area. The ease of selling hemp based CBD products for animals has led to an upsurge in the number of pet health outlets offering them in a variety of forms.\n\nHemp based products are easily available, but that doesn’t mean they’re all of equal value, or even [safe](https://www.projectcbd.org/claws-and-effect-use-of-medical-marijuana-for-pets). Like dietary supplements, these products are not standardized, or monitored for quality. They can contain other ingredients, some toxic, and the strength can be highly variable. \n\n### Using Cannabis Safely For Pets\n\nCannabis medicines have been shown to help animals with many of the same conditions people have – anxiety, nausea, cancer, seizures and gastrointestinal problems, but resistance from mainstream veterinary practice and government restrictions on cannabis in general may make it hard for pet lovers to find the support and information they need to use cannabis effectively for their four legged friends.\n\nHolistic veterinarians and those experienced in complementary medicine can often offer information and guidance for the best ways to use cannabis products safely for an animal companion. It may take a while for veterinary research on cannabis to catch up with “human” medicine, but for any creature with a backbone, the benefits may well be the same.\n\nPhoto credit: [Alvan Nee](https://unsplash.com/photos/T-0EW-SEbsE)\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. These medications belong to the same class of drugs as heroin and opium – highly addictive substances that trigger powerful responses in the brain’s pleasure and reward system along with blocking receptors for pain. \n\nBut although the opioid abuse crisis claims headlines, opioids are only one type of drug with a high potential for abuse. Benzodiazepines such as Xanax, Ativan and Klonopin, which are used to treat conditions such as anxiety, depression and insomnia, can also cause physical or psychological addictions, and so can hypnotics, or sleep medications, such as Ambien and Lunesta. \n\nThese and similar medications act on different pathways in the brain and central nervous system to provide relief for pain, anxiety and depression, and insomnia. But according to a recent study by the [Brightfield Group in partnership with HelloMD](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5980e279f15fe13b757557d3/largest-cbd-usage-study-published-by-hellomd-with-brightfield-group), cannabidiol, or CBD, can provide relief for conditions in all three groups.\n\nRELATED: [WHAT IS CBD AND HOW CAN IT HELP ME?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/597fbfd2f15fe1002d7557dc/what-is-cbd-and-how-can-it-help-me)\n\n### Cannabis and the Endocannabinoid System\n\n[Cannabidiol](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/597fbfd2f15fe1002d7557dc/what-is-cbd-and-how-can-it-help-me) is one of over a hundred active compounds found in cannabis sativa, the marijuana plant. Unlike Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the compound responsible for marijuana’s famous high, CBD isn’t psychoactive – but it does have powerful medicinal properties, thanks to the body’s “built-in” ability to respond to cannabis. \n\nThe human body is rich in receptors – protein molecules that respond to signals produced not only within the body itself by neurotransmitters and hormones, but also from outside sources like medications. The endocannabinoid receptor system is a group of naturally occurring cannabinoid receptors found in the tissues and central nervous system. \n\nEndocannabinoid receptors play an important role in maintaining the immune system, reducing inflammation, modulating pain, and managing stress responses and mood. When a person uses cannabis, active compounds such as THC and CBD bind to these natural receptors and affect their responses. \n\n### Cannabis Has Many Medical Properties\n\nAlong with its euphoric high, THC can provide pain relief. CBD can also relieve pain, but it has far more anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety properties. Since each of these compounds boosts the effectiveness of the other, many medicinal marijuana products contain both THC and CBD in various proportions. \n\nBecause the body naturally responds to the compounds in cannabis, the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes isn’t really new. But as more and more states move to legalize marijuana, research on its medicinal properties has also intensified – and so has interest in its potential for replacing or reducing prescription pharmaceuticals. \n\nGovernment research on marijuana’s medical properties has been limited because marijuana is still a Schedule 1 class drug that, like heroin, is deemed to have no medical applications, but groundbreaking academic and private-sector research continues to demonstrate that in fact, the medical applications of cannabis are substantial.\n\n### Cannabis Can Be More Effective Than Prescriptions\n\nHelloMD recently [partnered](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5980e279f15fe13b757557d3/largest-cbd-usage-study-published-by-hellomd-with-brightfield-group) with the marketing research firm Brightfield Group to conduct a comprehensive study on the use of CBD. Surveying 2400 members of HelloMD’s community of medical cannabis users about their use of CBD, the study revealed that users most frequently turned to cannabis for conditions such as pain, insomnia, anxiety and depression. Of those, nearly half of them - 42 percent – stopped using prescription medications entirely and used CBD exclusively to treat their conditions.\n\nOther key findings from the study confirm that CBD can be an effective treatment, with 80 percent of respondents agreeing with that statement. And of all those surveyed, an overwhelming majority – 90 percent – said they wanted to buy CBD-only products derived from marijuana – an important distinction, since CBD is also found in hemp.\n\nThose findings echo the results of an earlier [study](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/595413ae914ae4001b40307a/hellomd-and-uc-berkeley-release-study-on-cannabis-use-as-a-substitute-for-opioid-and-non-opioid-based-pain-medication) conducted by UC Berkeley in partnership with HelloMD. Using the same database, researchers set out to study the effectiveness of cannabis as a substitute for opioid and non-opioid pain medications. Of nearly 3,000 respondents to the study survey, 97 percent agreed that they could decrease their use of opioids by using cannabis. Even more striking, 92 percent agreed or strongly agreed that they preferred cannabis to opioids to treat their condition. And 81 percent said that cannabis alone was more effective than using cannabis along with opioids.\n\nAccording to the Berkeley study, cannabis won out not only over opioids, but also over non-opioid based pain medications. Similar numbers of respondents agreed that they preferred cannabis rather than other kinds of non-opioid painkillers to treat their conditions. \n\nA different type of [study](http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/medical-cannabis-and-reduced-prescription-use-300506774.html)\n recently conducted by the University of New Mexico confirms these findings. Working with the Industrial Rehabilitation Clinics of Albuquerque, researchers followed patients in the state’s medical cannabis program to determine whether their use of prescription medications changed while taking cannabis. \n\nNew Mexico requires all prescriptions for scheduled, or controlled, substances to be recorded in the state’s prescription medication monitoring database. That made it possible to track the kind and number of prescriptions participants filled, along with other information such as the number of prescribing physicians they saw and how many pharmacy visits they made.\n\nThe results? Within 6 months of starting a medical marijuana program, 71 percent of patients followed in the study either reduced their use of scheduled prescription medications such as opioid painkillers, benzodiazepines and sleep aids – or stopped using them altogether. \n\n### Cannabis Could Be The Future of Pain Management\n\nThese studies have profound implications for the treatment of pain, sleep problems, anxiety and depression – conditions that typically require powerful prescription drugs with often serious side effects and the very real potential for addiction. Safer and more effective, cannabis may be the most potent weapon in the fight against opioid addiction – and the future standard of care for a long list of chronic health conditions.\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56201c206430320006bb0000/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Meanwhile, THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is another. These cannabinoids are just two of at least 113 identified in cannabis and, at this point in time, are the two we know most about. Both have extraordinary medical properties and have been found to have repeatable and lasting positive effects across a wide variety of medical conditions. \n\nTHC has been studied for decades and is known to be a very effective analgesic (pain reliever) although it’s perhaps better known for its psychoactive side effect, which can give the user a sense of euphoria or “high.” \n\n### CBD's Medicinal Properties\n\nMore recently, as cannabis has become more accepted for health and wellness, CBD has become the subject of attention too. While rigorous studies are still needed, preliminary clinical reports indicate CBD to also have analgesic properties (though perhaps not as effective as THC), as well as having anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, anti-psychoactive, and anti-convulsant properties—perhaps more when combined with THC. CBD achieves this by directly (or indirectly) affecting neurological receptors responsible for pain modulation, inflammation regulation, and mood and stress management. \n\nAll this from a single plant species: cannabis. Impressive.\n\nAnd, unlike THC, CBD isn’t known to have any intoxication or psychoactive side effect. Word of this is getting out. Many, if not most, of the HelloMD patient community regularly seek and use CBD or CBD-dominant cannabis products as part of their therapeutic regimen. Moreover, many use it in place of more traditional pharmaceutical solutions. \n\n### First Ever Large-Scale Report on CBD\n\nTo better understand this phenomenon, HelloMD and the Brightfield Group recently performed the first ever large-scale study of patients’ experiences, perceptions and understanding of CBD. The results include a fascinating look into how patients interpret the efficacy of CBD products in treating various medical conditions. \n\nFor purposes of this report, “CBD users” are defined as patients using hemp-derived CBD, marijuana-derived CBD-only products or CBD-dominant products (with CBD:THC ratios of 1:1 or higher).\n\n### The CBD Reports Key Findings\n\nA remarkable 80% of CBD users found CBD “very effective” to “extremely effective” in treating their respective conditions. An equally impressive 42% of CBD users actually stopped using their traditional prescribed pharmaceutical medications altogether, replacing them with CBD-based cannabis products. Sit with that for a moment. This behavior has far-reaching consequences across multiple domains spanning the profit centers of Big Pharma, to how we educate medical professionals, to how we might tackle the current national opioid crisis.\n\nEqually intriguing is how CBD-only products are favored by women. The study found 58% of CBD-only users to be women. This is interesting because it shows a considerable ramp when compared to our findings in the January 2016 HelloMD Medical Marijuana Study, where that number was a much lower 36%. In the joint study, HelloMD performed with UC Berkeley earlier this year on cannabis efficacy for pain, we found that number to be 44%. It would appear that women are learning about CBD fast and, perhaps, are more actively seeking cannabis products that will not leave them impaired or “high” (by the psychoactive effects that THC-dominant products have).\n\nWhile CBD can be a powerful medicine on its own, the compound’s effect may be enhanced, or more effective, when combined with other cannabinoids, specifically THC. This cooperating synergy between marijuana compounds is often called the “entourage effect” or “whole plant effect.” The push towards whole plant medicine is certainly appropriate in certain cases as it provides another path towards healing, as some patients may respond well to CBD and others to a combination of CBD and THC.\n\nWhile there’s still plenty more to learn about CBD and its applications, this much is clear: The demand for CBD, be it combined with THC or used as an extract on its own, is growing exponentially. Three quarters of those surveyed use CBD in some capacity, and more than half use it in CBD-only formulas. The latter data point is perhaps made more significant given the wider availability (across the nation) of CBD-only products.\n\nThe HelloMD and Brightfield Group report is based on responses from over 2,400 HelloMD members. \n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. The most common symptoms of schizophrenia are delusions, hallucinations, and chaotic behavior and speech. Schizophrenia can be extremely detrimental to the lives of people and it is believed that one third to one half of homeless individuals suffer from schizophrenia. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Effective Treatments are Lacking\n\nThere is a lack of effective treatment options for people with schizophrenia and all of the options available require a constant administration of medication. Current treatments include a cocktail of antipsychotic medications, which are determined based on what symptoms are most prominent in the individual patient. There are many medications available to help with hallucinations and delusions, but there are not many to help with the cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia. Cannabis, however, may be able to help relieve some cognitive problems that can come from schizophrenia. \n\n### CBD Relieves Many Symptoms\n\nA recent rat modeled [study published in the the journal Nature](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28230072) found that CBD derived from cannabis may help with cognitive impairment related to schizophrenia. The research was conducted at the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute (IHMRI) in New South Wales, Australia. In the study, rats were infected prenatally with polycytidilic acid. The acid helps replicate similar symptoms to psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia and produces a generation of mice with symptoms. Once born, the mice were treated using chronic CBD treatment and were tested on social interaction and cognitive function. \n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS MAY HELP PEOPLE WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5952753e491da24423fed6a2/cannabis-may-help-people-with-schizophrenia)\n\nThe symptomatic mice were given 10 mg of CBD for three weeks and many factors were measured, including body weight and food and water intake. There were a plethora of tests conducted on the mice during and following their treatment with CBD. The tests were conducted to look at the effectiveness of the CBD at helping counteract some of the cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia and included T-maze tests, novel object recognition tests, and social interaction tests. \n\nThe study's lead author, Ashleigh Osborne, [said of the studies results](http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/317768.php), “We found that CBD was able to restore recognition and working memory, as well as social behavior to normal levels. These findings are interesting because they suggest that CBD may be able to treat some of the symptoms of schizophrenia that are seemingly resistant to existing medications.\n\nIn addition, CBD treatment did not alter body weight or food intake, which are common side effects of antipsychotic drug treatment.” The effects that CBD had on the mice could indicate a major breakthrough in the world of schizophrenia treatment because it appears to achieve something that no other medications have been able to, including rebuilding cognitive potential and improving social interaction. \n\n### THC May Worsen Symptoms\n\nCannabis as a whole, however, may not be good for schizophrenia sufferers because THC is believed to potentially worsen the symptom of schizophrenia. Though THC can be very helpful for some medical conditions, it could be detrimental to sufferers of schizophrenia, whereas CBD may be extremely beneficial. The researchers also conducted a review of studies on the therapeutic value of CBD before conducting this recent rat modeled study, \"From this review, we found that CBD will not improve learning and memory in healthy brains, but may improve aspects of learning and memory in illnesses associated with cognitive impairment, including Alzheimer's disease, as well as neurological and neuro-inflammatory disorders,” [said Dr. Katrina Green](http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/317768.php), one of the lead researchers on the recent study. \n\nThe review highlighted that cannabis does not have the same effects on people who have conditions and those who do not. Some of this reaction could potentially be tied to the idea of endocannabinoid deficiency, which hypothesizes that a lack of internally produced endocannabinoids could be linked to certain conditions, meaning that a better state of homeostasis can be achieved when the body is supplemented by cannabinoids from cannabis. People without a deficiency, however, could instead experience no positive attributes from the cannabinoids because their bodies are naturally in equilibrium.\n\n### Targeting Cognitive Functions \n\nMore research is necessary into why the cannabinoids seem to be effective at targeting cognitive problems related to schizophrenia, because currently there is no definitive answer. The researchers of the study hope to be able to conduct more studies and eventually a clinical trial to see if there would be similar effects on humans with schizophrenia as seen modeled in rats in this study. This study provides yet another look into how cannabis could potentially help a group of people who find it difficult to receive adequate medication for their condition. \n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post.
