Children with epilepsy have anecdotally responded very well to CBD treatment, which even spawned the creation of the famous cannabis strain Charlotte’s Web. Charlotte’s Web was created for a young Colorado girl named Charlotte who found a great reduction in seizures after using CBD products. The young girl and her family were featured on [Sanjay Gupta’s Weed](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SZzgfyXhJI), a CNN mini series on medical marijuana, which exposed many Americans, for the first time, to the modern day science behind medicinal cannabis. \r\n\r\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\r\n\r\nIn a recent case, [Mark Zartler](https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2017/02/28/there-is-no-other-medicine-texas-father-breaks-law-to-treat-self-harming-autistic-daughter-with-marijuana/?utm_term=.92cdb628d655), a father from Texas admitted to illegally buying cannabis in order to provide his daughter with relief from her severe epilepsy. His admission was part of a plea for the legalization of medical cannabis in Texas, so his daughter and other children could have reliable access to treatment in the form of medical cannabis. Zartler, who’s daughter has suffered from severe epilepsy almost her whole life, has found that no treatment has work as effectively as cannabis has to help his daughter. A new [study out of the New England Journal of Medicine](http://www.thecannifornian.com/cannabis-health/research-studies/marijuana-extract-helps-kids-epilepsy-study-says/) has provided more evidence, in the form of a formal clinical trial, for how much cannabis can help children with epilepsy. \r\n\r\n### CBD Proves Most Effective\r\n\r\nThe new study found that children who took a liquid form of CBD saw an average of a 39% decrease in seizures. The study was a double blind randomized placebo controlled trial that tested the efficacy of Epidolex, a liquid CBD medication created by the British company GW Pharmaceuticals. The patients featured in the study all have Dravets Syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy that is often associated with developmental issues. Many children with Dravets Syndrome do not find relief through typical anti-seizure medications. The study included 120 participants from ages two to eighteen who lived in the United States and Europe. The patients who participated in the study experienced between 4 and 1,717 seizures in a month before receiving treatment. \r\n\r\nThe patients either received a placebo or a dose of Epidolex, in association with their normal anti-seizure medications. Patients who received Epidolex saw an average of a 39% decrease in their seizures over the course of the study, compared to the placebo group who saw no change. Most of the active medication group did see some mild side effects, like fatigue, stomach discomfort and sleep problems. CBD, in most of the participants, had similar effects to other anti-seizure medications. \r\n\r\nThe study is based in a long record of using cannabis to aid people with epilepsy. There are even a few historical mentions of cannabis being used to help treat epilepsy. There is evidence that cannabis was used in Sumeria in 1000 BC to treat epilepsy and it was also used in the Victorian era as a treatment for epilepsy in Europe. Dr. Orrin Devinsky, lead author of the study and director of NYU Langone's Comprehensive Epilepsy Center [said about the study](http://www.cnn.com/2017/05/24/health/cannabidiol-epilepsy-study/), \"After 3,800 years of cannabis use for epilepsy ... we finally have solid evidence..CBD is an effective drug for this type of rare epilepsy but was not a panacea (or cure-all) for these children.” This study provides a true clinical trial that points to the benefits of cannabis for children with epilepsy, though the evidence is still relatively preliminary.\r\n\r\n### Synthetic Cannabinoids\r\n\r\nThe medication used in the trial, Epidolex, was created by GW Pharmaceuticals, a British company on the cutting edge of cannabinoid therapies. This is the same company that created Sativex, a leading drug for multiple sclerosis that has been approved for use in 29 countries. The company conducts large amounts of cannabis research and focuses on isolating cannabinoids, rather than whole plant cannabis treatment. Their products, however, are made to be prescribed in a traditional setting, rather than distributed in a dispensary. \r\n\r\nThough the company has branch of operations within the United States, their products are not currently available within the country. Dr. Brenda Porter, an associate professor of neurology at the Stanford School of Medicine, who was not a researcher in the study, has said about the legality of the treatment option, \"Hopefully, the FDA will see this as a sign it should be moved off of Schedule I. If it stays on Schedule I, we will have trouble getting it to our patients when it does become available.” The potential for prescription cannabis to be available in a regular pharmacy could make it more appealing to the FDA as an option for legalization and in turn, the continued normalization of cannabis related treatments. \r\n\r\nMany families have found themselves moving to states with legal cannabis to provide their children with relief. [The Epilepsy Foundation of Colorado](https://www.epilepsycolorado.org/news-research/medical-marijuana/) supports access of cannabis for children with epilepsy, making it a location that many people look to bring their children to find relief. A changing in the classification of cannabis on a federal level, however, could make products like Epidolex available to people across the United States and would not limit children from relief based on their physical location. \r\n\r\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. His path as a conventional veterinarian led him to learn and adopt more holistic practices until, inevitably, he incorporated cannabis into his alternative treatments. Now he is one of the most sought out experts on the effective use of cannabis to treat animals. We sat down with Dr. Gary to learn more about his practice at [Montclair Veterinary Hospital](http://montclairvethospital.com/) and the benefits cannabis treatments can have on animals and the challenges that cannabis-friendly vets face today.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Q: Tell us a little about yourself and your practice.\n\nA: I have been a veterinarian in the Bay Area since 1998. When I moved out here after veterinary school I started by working both general practice and emergency. After a number of years in practice I was looking for other ways to help my patients beyond what Western medicine had to offer me. I got trained in acupuncture and chiropractic and began doing herbal therapy and a variety of other alternative treatments. I found it was enormously helpful and I was able to help conditions and fix things that I was never able to do with Western medicine alone. \n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/59406104149188001f32d1a3/embedded_images/594062262d29f100202f3169/Screen_Shot_2017-06-13_at_2.53.04_PM.png)\n \n### Q: How did you get started treating animals with cannabis?\n\nA: Living where we live (in Oakland, California), it was a natural progression to find my way into cannabis from a medical perspective. I had a few pet owners come in and talk to me about their experiences trying cannabis on their animals. I started talking to the few people in my professional circles that had some experience with it and we started putting together dosages and protocols and ratios for various conditions. \n\nRELATED: [CAN CBD OIL PROVIDE PAIN RELIEF FOR YOUR PET?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56180c0b3737660006120100/can-cbd-oil-provide-pain-relief-for-your-pet)\n\nI was fortunate enough to get in contact with a guy named Paul Hansberry who runs a small, artisanal grow out of San Francisco called Lovingly and Legally. I sat down with Paul and his business partner Susan and we came up with three formulas for pets - a high CBD, a high THC, and an even ratio. We’ve had enormous success since we put these formulations together two years ago. When I started using cannabis it was this unbelievable eye-opening moment. Here’s this medicine that is so unbelievably powerful and effective and almost completely unknown in the veterinary industry. \n\n### Q: Can you share an example of a successful outcome treating an animal with cannabis? \n\nA: I had somebody come in with their cat that had chronic inflammatory bowel issues. This kitty was on all kinds of medications. The woman pretty much told me that unless I could do something to help this cat, she was going to have to put him to sleep because he was so miserable and there was nothing more to do. We put him on some supplements and made some dietary alterations but without a doubt the thing that turned a corner for this cat was the cannabis. \n\nLiterally within two days of putting this cat on cannabis he had his first normal bowel movement that he’d had in almost a year. We were able to drastically improve this kitty’s life to the point where he was stable. The owner was ecstatic. It was so shocking to me that everything from western medicine had failed and something as simple as an extract from a plant literally in a day turns the cat around.\n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/59406104149188001f32d1a3/embedded_images/5940627f2d29f108272f30f9/Screen_Shot_2017-06-13_at_2.51.17_PM.png) \n\n### Q: What is the most common reason pet owners bring their animals to you?\n\nA: Speaking broadly there are two groups of people that come to me. Either they’ve tried everything, nothing has worked, and I’m their last resort, or they come in because they’re holistically minded people and they want to get started in that way before they move towards Western medicine. We see people bring animals in for arthritis and back pain, seizure disorders, GI problems, stress and anxiety. Pretty much all the same sort of things people would seek medical help for.\n\n### What’s the main difference between treating animals and people with cannabis?\n\nI would say the indications and uses for cannabis in animals are almost exactly the same as they are in people. The differences are in the dosing. It’s just like any other medicine that any veterinarian would use, you have to calculate a dose. The problem is that most people don’t know what those doses are in cannabis. There’s such a huge information gap that you literally have to start from the beginning. \n\nIf you ask a roomful of doctors or a roomful of veterinarians if they’ve heard of the endocannabinoid system, the vast majority of them will say no. Every veterinarian I talk to is really interested to know more, it’s just that nobody’s ever taught them and they’ve never had the opportunity to learn. Now with the legal environment the way that it is, they’re literally being threatened away from it. \n\n### Q: Would you say the legal environment is one of the biggest challenges you face?\n\nA: By far and away the biggest challenges are the legal issue and the lack of understanding on the veterinary community’s part of what they have at their fingertips. As of beginning of this year, the veterinary board has taken hard stance in regards to cannabis and pets and threatening vets licenses should they even have the discussion with clients. \n\nThe rationale is because Prop 215 was very specific about medical cannabis being for humans. I’m working with the California Veterinary Association in hopes that legislation will introduce a bill that will amend and allow cannabis for animals. Right now veterinarians don’t realize how valuable cannabis can be and the sad thing is that it may ultimately take a pharmaceutical company to wake them up. That’s where information tends to come from and you can say what you want about that, it just is what it is. \n\n### Q: What motivates you and what is your biggest area of passion?\n\nA: My passion first and foremost is always about the animals and making pets better. Primarily, I approach that through integrative medicine, combining western medical care with all the alternatives out there. There are a finite number of people and animals I can see in my office, so I’ve started to look at what I can do to get the word out to other pet owners to understand the options that are out there. \n\n### Q: Where can pet-owners find more information about using cannabis for their pets?\n\nA: I’ve got a book on integrative medicine for dogs and cats coming out in August that has a whole chapter dedicated to cannabis. \n\n### Q: Any last words you want to impart to the public?\n\nA: If this is something you’re interested in, I encourage people to please talk to your veterinarian or find some resources. Don’t wing it, don’t try to extrapolate a dose for your cat or dog as if they’re a small person. It just doesn’t really work that way and it’s a recipe for trouble. Find some resources and do it right.\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Almost everyone will experience acne at some point in their life, whether it comes during their teens or adulthood. Acne can be uncomfortable, and at times even painful. Possibly hardest of all, acne can cause problems including poor self esteem, and in serious cases, depression and anxiety. 50 million Americans are suffering from acne at any given time and dealing with the stress of trying to cover up their blemishes and trying to find a solution.\r\n\r\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\r\n\r\n### THC and Acne\r\n\r\nCannabis and acne are a controversial combination because some researchers claim that cannabis may even cause or worsen acne. [THC can increase testosterone levels](http://herb.co/2016/06/10/skin-deep-4-acne-problems/), which leads to increased acne, but the increase in testosterone experienced by cannabis consumption is only 3-5%, which is a nominal amount which should not lead to an increase in acne. Food consumption associated with cannabis could also be leading to a negative connection between cannabis and acne. Since many people, especially recreational consumers, can experience the “munchies” while consuming cannabis, they may reach for snacks high in salt, sugar, or fat that may lead to an increase in acne.\r\n\r\nIncreased oil production has also been tied to cannabis because THC functions much like anandamide, an internally produced endocannabinoid that is involved in oil production in the skin. So, high levels of THC can supplement anandamide, leading to an increase in oil and acne production. CBD, however, is able to regulate oil production in the skin by countering anandamide. A [2010 Hungarian study by Dr. Tamas Biro](http://www.beyondthc.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/CBD-for-Acne.pdf) found that when CBD was applied to skin cells it decreased anandamide and oil production by inhibiting lipid synthesis. If you suffer from acne, decreasing oil production in the skin could help to reduce the amount of pimples produced and help relieve already formed ones. \r\n\r\n### CBD May Reduce Acne \r\n\r\nSince [CBD](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-thc-vs-cbd) is the cannabinoid that assists with acne, results can be achieved through hemp or cannabis based products, though cannabis based products are far more potent. Topicals are the best choice for targeting acne with cannabis and they can be in the forms of special salves or simple oils. Applying CBD to the skin can help endocannabinoid receptors, and system as a whole, in the skin achieve proper balance. Cannabis and hemp oil also have linoleic acid, which works to regulate the production of oil on your face that can lead to breakouts. \r\n\r\nRELATED:[SUMMER SKINCARE WITH CANNABIS](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5-ways-to-use-cannabis-for-summer-skincare)\r\n\r\nApplying a small amount of a CBD cannabis topical can not only help to reduce oil production, but it can also reduce inflammation. CBD helps regulate immune responses, which can lead to a decrease in inflammation that can help reduce the visual appearance and prominence of blemishes. \r\n\r\nThere is a lot of potential for CBD to become a part of your everyday skin care routine in the form of moisturizer or spot treatments to help ease your acne symptoms. If you cannot find a topical that suits your desires, you can simply mix coconut oil with cannabis oil for a simple, natural face cream that moisturizes and balances your skin’s oil production to help reduce acne breakouts. Dogs, like humans and all other mammals, have an endocannabinoid system, that is made up of receptors that process cannabinoids. It can be assumed, that much like humans, dogs produce endocannabinoids that are supplemented by cannabinoids in cannabis. There are thousands of anecdotal stories where people claim that cannabis is beneficial in helping dogs with conditions like pain, anxiety, inflammation, arthritis, and appetite loss.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Hemp Derived Dog Products\n\nAccessing whole plant cannabis, which requires a medical recommendation, may be a challenge for most people. As a result hemp derived pet treats are a viable alternative that have become increasingly popular. Hemp provides cannabinoids, including CBD, to dogs without the added THC that can potentially cause them distress. Some conditions in dogs, however are better treated with minimal amounts of THC, however dogs are extremely sensitive to the psychoactive cannabinoid. More people are now looking to buy whole plant cannabis products for their dogs in order to provide them more relief.\n\n### Whole Plant Cannabis or Hemp?\n\nThe issue of access to medical cannabis for pets has been raised in various states without much success. Nevada recently ruled that it would not allow veterinarians to prescribe cannabis to pets and an Arizona bill that would have also allowed pets to get a medical marijuana cards failed to even get a hearing from the Committee of Health and Human Services. There is, however, hope for a Florida bill that would allow researchers at the University of Florida to work with other veterinary researchers to look into how low THC, high CBD medical marijuana could benefit dogs with seizure disorders. \n\nA survey from the Journal of American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association found that out of the 632 people surveyed, 72% gave their dogs hemp based products and 64% of the people surveyed felt that the hemp products helped their pets in various ways. Some vets are speaking out regarding the potential benefits that cannabis may have for dogs. An Australian holistic veterinarian, Dr. Edward Bassingthwaighte, has found success treating dogs with cannabis for a variety of conditions and is a vocal proponent of cannabis for pets. He has treated dogs with conditions such as tumors, heart murmurs and arthritis with both CBD and THC, as well as cold pressed hemp oil with degrees of success.\n\n### Treating Medical Conditions\n\nWhat has become evident is that dog owners are buying whole plant and hemp products for their animals but they are also using their own medical cards to buy their pets medical cannabis. VetCBD provides dog owners with medical grade cannabis that is specifically formulated for dogs and cats. VetCBD makes a tincture that is formulated to help with seizures, nausea, lack of appetite, inflammation, pain, and a host of other medical conditions. The product is lab tested for potency and cleanliness and is found in dispensaries all across the state of California.\n\nAn extremely popular brand called Holistic Hound is a pet treat company started by Heidi Hill. With her 15 years experience, Heidi centered Holistic Hound on pet wellness and nutrition. \n\nHolistic Hound's dog treats come in 3 or 7 mg per bite. These treats won't make your dog feel high, but will ward off anxiety if your companion is jittery. \n\nOlder pets can benefit from the pain-relieving and organically grown hemp oil in each treat. The cannabinoids can reduce inflammation, aiding in arthritis or any chronic pain your dog may be experiencing. \n\nWhat distinguishes Holistic Hound is their mixture of medicinal mushrooms, a five mushroom blend of:\n\n* Reishi\n* Shiitake\n* Mesima\n* Poria\n* Turkey tail\n\nThe chicken flavored treats contain pasture-raised chickens from Wisconsin, while the lamb treats use grass-fed lamb from family farms in New Zealand. \n\nKeep in mind your dog's weight when figuring out how many treats to feed them. Start with a small amount and increase if you feel your dog needs it.\n\nCurrently, there is no formal scientific research on the effect of cannabis on dogs, so there is not any conclusive evidence of its benefits. There is clear anecdotal evidence, however, on how cannabis may benefit dogs with various conditions and improve the quality of their life. If you would be interested in looking more into how cannabis could benefit your dog, some holistic vets do use cannabis as part of their protocol, and it could be possible to locate one to assist you if you do not desire to start the process on your own. If you are looking to assist your dog with a medical condition and improve their quality of life, cannabis may be the answer to a healthy, happy dog.\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Cannabidiol, the non psychoactive cannabinoid within cannabis, is having its' moment in the limelight. We know from research and anecdotal evidence that CBD has helped patients find relief from inflammation, pain, anxiety, psychosis, seizures, spasms, and other conditions, but we have so much more to learn. \r\n\r\nHelloMD is launching one of the largest surveys done to date concerning CBD (cannabidiol) usage. Performed in collaboration with [Brightfield Group](https://www.brightfieldgroup.com/), the premiere market research firm focused on the legal cannabis industry, HelloMD will seek insights from over 150,000 community members regarding CBD consumption, patient knowledge, perceptions and misconceptions concerning CBD. \r\n\r\nThe time is right for a comprehensive survey on CBD. CBD has become a buzzword both amongst current cannabis users and the canna curious alike and companies are lining up to launch new CBD products into the market.  \r\n\r\nThrough this survey, HelloMD and Brightfield Group hope to uncover how well people actually understand CBD. What products are perceived as miracle cures and which ones are perceived as snake oil? How does hemp-derived CBD compare with marijuana-derived CBD?\r\n\r\nMore information we hope to gather:\r\n\r\n* Who is currently using CBD & who is hesitant to try \r\n* The why/how patients are using CBD\r\n* Efficacy in treating specific medical conditions\r\n* Comparisons with THC dominant products, OTC products and/or opioids\r\n* Perceptions on CBD brands and products\r\n\r\nPlease take the time to fill out this survey to inform the HelloMD community and beyond. \r\n\r\nWarm Regards,\r\n\r\nThe HelloMD Team\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,/9j/2wBDABALDA4MChAODQ4SERATGCgaGBYWGDEjJR0oOjM9PDkzODdASFxOQERXRTc4UG1RV19iZ2hnPk1xeXBkeFxlZ2P/2wBDARESEhgVGC8aGi9jQjhCY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2P/wgARCAAPABQDASIAAhEBAxEB/8QAGAAAAgMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMCBAX/xAAXAQADAQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAQID/9oADAMBAAIQAxAAAAHOciWUKLAL/8QAGRAAAgMBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAERITEC/9oACAEBAAEFAq6EkPahQaf/xAAUEQEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAQ/9oACAEDAQE/AT//xAAUEQEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAQ/9oACAECAQE/AT//xAAZEAACAwEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIRARMVH/2gAIAQEABj8CVSh8MP/EABsQAAIDAAMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAERACExQVGh/9oACAEBAAE/IRkFO+YSiglBsvIFdmccMgKK0egE/9oADAMBAAIAAwAAABDrD//EABcRAAMBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABESH/2gAIAQMBAT8QSukP/8QAFxEAAwEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAERIf/aAAgBAgEBPxCOYU//xAAcEAEBAAICAwAAAAAAAAAAAAABEQAhMWFBUbH/2gAIAQEAAT8Qmb3jR9YcrjvL3vCdQOqmEm8SJMUKmhEVvHrAGEcS5//Z","aspectRatio":1.3333333333333333,"src":"/static/d000fd059ef8c3e71de738315d672a73/14b42/6a1611e60dbb7523d646a64d2222a724.jpg","srcSet":"/static/d000fd059ef8c3e71de738315d672a73/f836f/6a1611e60dbb7523d646a64d2222a724.jpg 200w,\n/static/d000fd059ef8c3e71de738315d672a73/2244e/6a1611e60dbb7523d646a64d2222a724.jpg 400w,\n/static/d000fd059ef8c3e71de738315d672a73/14b42/6a1611e60dbb7523d646a64d2222a724.jpg 800w,\n/static/d000fd059ef8c3e71de738315d672a73/47498/6a1611e60dbb7523d646a64d2222a724.jpg 1200w,\n/static/d000fd059ef8c3e71de738315d672a73/54ac5/6a1611e60dbb7523d646a64d2222a724.jpg 1365w","srcWebp":"/static/d000fd059ef8c3e71de738315d672a73/58556/6a1611e60dbb7523d646a64d2222a724.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/d000fd059ef8c3e71de738315d672a73/61e93/6a1611e60dbb7523d646a64d2222a724.webp 200w,\n/static/d000fd059ef8c3e71de738315d672a73/1f5c5/6a1611e60dbb7523d646a64d2222a724.webp 400w,\n/static/d000fd059ef8c3e71de738315d672a73/58556/6a1611e60dbb7523d646a64d2222a724.webp 800w,\n/static/d000fd059ef8c3e71de738315d672a73/99238/6a1611e60dbb7523d646a64d2222a724.webp 1200w,\n/static/d000fd059ef8c3e71de738315d672a73/5e0b8/6a1611e60dbb7523d646a64d2222a724.webp 1365w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2400-markdown","title":"Dr. Perry Solomon: My Cannabis Experience at SXSW 2017","slug":"dr-perry-solomon-my-cannabis-experience-at-sxsw-2017","content":"### SXSW Invites Cannabis in the Door\n\nSouth by Southwest, long a place for film and music, has opened the door for cannabis! Texas is still Texas, it has still not seen the light and legalized medicinal or adult use of cannabis. However, SXSW thought it of interest to include a series of educational and informative sessions on cannabis and included numerous Q & A panels for their attendees.\n\nHelloMD was asked to participate on a panel called ‘Cannabis for Treatment of Injuries and Illness’, a topic which related to the use of cannabis for various medical conditions, as well as pain and opioids. I was honored to be asked to participate and share my viewpoint. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Cannabis for Treatment of Injuries and Illness\n\nOn the panel with me were Seibo Shen the Founder and CEO of VapeXhale, Hugh Hempel the Co-Founder and CEO of Strainz and Debra Miran, a cannabis activist and former member of Maryland Cannabis Commission.\n\nSeibo Shen, a world class martial arts expert, spoke about using cannabis to help his focus, training and get into the flow of the match and how he helps other athletes do the same. He is becoming a well known vocal advocate on reducing the stigma surrounding the use of cannabis for this reason.\n\nHugh Hempel came to the cannabis industry by necessity. His twin daughters have an extremely rare genetic disorder called Niemann-Pick disease. At the time he and his wife Chris found out, there was no medication available for them to use. \n\nRELATED: [HELLOMD'S PAMELA HADFIELD ON TECHTONICS PODCAST](https://hellomd.com/health-wellness/58b7638955400d001339b427/hellomds-pamela-hadfield-on-tech-tonics-podcast)\n\nHugh and Chris, did something no one thought possible and were successful in pushing through approval of an “experimental” drug to help their daughters. However, they still suffered from seizures. Eventually they found cannabis, which helped reduce the seizures. As a result, they began processing their own special formulations of oil which worked better than any pharmaceutical they had tried. They started an extraction company called Strainz, which is now in three states. Hugh is a tremendous cannabis activist who has told his story in an incredibly moving TED talk.\n\nDebra Miren was a member of the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission from 2013-2016. She speaks all over the country on cannabis regulations to various groups and legislatures to help them craft rational cannabis laws. Her perspective from the legislation side as well as within the endocannabinoid system discussion, was very well received by the audience. What I found interesting was that about half the audience was familiar with endocannabinoids, a far higher percentage than I would have imagined.\n\nOn the panel, my comments focused on the genesis of HelloMD, our community of members, our Answers platform and how we use Telehealth to perform remote cannabis evaluations on patients from all over California to increase access to medicinal cannabis. \n\nCalifornia is very unique not only by increasing access to cannabis (verses all other states in the country), but by also allowing remote evaluations online. When the audience heard that Telemedicine was used for cannabis consultations in the state of California, the universal reaction seemed to be, “when can we do that in our state?” \n\n### UC Berkeley & HelloMD Patient Study Results\n\nFor the first time I revealed the general results of our Berkeley-HelloMD pain survey, which is about to be published publicly. The study shows that the overwhelming majority of patients preferred cannabis to opioid and non-opioid pain relievers and had far fewer side effects. \n\nA key finding was the overwhelming number of people who were able to decrease their opioid use by using cannabis! (specific numbers will be within the upcoming published article). Any decrease of the 33,091 deaths reported in 2015 from prescription opioids would be something to embrace, but the numbers that we will show are truly remarkable. \n\n### Hemp Based CBD\n\nWhile touring the vast convention floor where VR and tech was king, I was somewhat surprised to see several CBD only booths. These were all hemp extracts by companies such as Charlotte’s Web, among others. All of these booths were packed by people who were curious about CBD and what medicinal benefits it had. There have been rumblings of hemp also being looked at as illegal to ship across state lines, but these companies seem to be thriving.\n\nSince only 29 states and DC have medicinal cannabis legislation in place, these companies are serving the huge market of people who cannot obtain cannabis products with a THC content about 0.3%, but can received hemp CBD in any state. Due to this, one of the hottest words being thrown around is how to create the right ‘Effect’. \n\nWhen I say effect, it means what effect will the cannabis product ultimately have on you? Will it make you feel euphoric, creative, giggly, energetic or perhaps make you want to slip into the crevice of the couch? Knowing what might happen to you after ingesting cannabis, its well, kind of important. In the past, it has also been less than predictable.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nThe 'Effects' trend started early in 2016 and over time has grown and grown, and with some success, depending on the company and product we might be talking about. Some companies seem more able to deliver on this promise more than others and to some, it's just a marketing strategy. In many ways, the effects trend signals the maturation of the industry and the realization that to grow, products need consistency and reliability.\n\n### Level Blends: Science First Approach\n\n Level Blends is one of the new vape companies to emerge this past year out of San Francisco. It has created a whole line of what they call ‘effect based blends’. The company was started by three Co Founders, Josh, David and Chris and prides itself on its science first approach to creating their blends, which is part of its history.\n\nChief Scientist Chris Emerson, while studying for his PHD in molecular biology at Stanford, went to live on a cannabis farm up in the Emerald Triangle a few years ago. Along the way he had an epiphany and decided to drop out of his PHD program and instead focus his attention on “using science to transform cannabis into a tool that you can use to modulate your mood”. Level Blends was born soon afterwards.\n\nRELATED: [MICRODOSING: KIVA PETRA MINT REVIEW](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/58bf09c668b03100076d74a5/microdosing-kiva-confections-petra-mint-review)\n\nTalking to CEO David Dacus, it is clear that they take their approach to creating high quality products that create specific effects, such as ‘Uplift’, ’Float’ or ‘Dissolve’, very seriously. At the heart of their mission is the desire to create an experience that can not only be repeated, but which will guide the consumer with a sense of comfort, allowing for further more in-depth exploration. \n\n### Quality, Cannabinoids, and Zero Additives\n\nThe Level Blends oils are blended on site within their laboratory, tested for purity with the the assurance that there are zero pesticides and no additives within the oil. What is particularly interesting is that Level does not use any additive to thin their oils, as most other vape companies do. As a result it is free of propylene glycol as well as any other carrier oil. \n\nLevel also claims to use cannabis strains that you are unlikely to find in normal dispensaries, ones which “are high in cannabinoids like CBD, CBG, and THCV which offer different effects from THC”. Talking to Chris, it's clear the Level has an eye on extracting more obscure, lesser known cannabinoids in the not so distant future.\n\nAll cannabis consumers should be concerned with the overall quality of the product being ingested, and Level Blends delivers in this department. But, from the outset, what you will notice about Level is the approachable branding and product packaging. They divide their product line into two branches, the first being what they call “Classic”, which is their high THC line. The second branch is what they call “Harmonic” which is their blended CBD to THC product line.\n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/58c489610adb1b66ae83920d/embedded_images/58c489630adb1b66ae83920e/THC.png)\n Product information that comes with the Level Blends 'Float' oil cartridge.\n\n### 'Classic' and 'Harmonic' Product Lines\n\nThe “Classic” line has four possible effects to choose from; ’Spark’, ‘High’, ‘Float’ and ‘Dissolve’. Looking at the packaging for ‘Float’, you see everything you might need to know about this product. The percentage of THC, CBD, CBC and CBG as well as the strain type, indica are clearly marked on the packaging. \n\nOn the silver package it also states “Slow down, relax and float downstream. Enhance entertainment and foster reflection.” There are also some icons with words that say ‘relaxed’, ‘meditative’ and ‘classic flavor’. Remembering what it was like buying my first vape oil cartridge, and how confusing that process was, this seems like a revelation in product packaging and communication with the consumer. This product is ideal for a nervous, first time buyer who wants assurance as to what they are getting, and it's kind of a no-brainer to be this clear.\n\n### 'Remedy' High CBD Product Review\n\nThe “Harmonic” line, which interests me most, focuses on three blends, ‘Remedy’, ‘Uplift’ and ‘Radiance’. In Level’s words the ‘Harmonic’ line is meant to present “a range of blends that combine the euphoria of THC with the therapeutic effects of CBD.” This is my sweet spot, and it is unusual to see a product line that offers such a range of CBD to THC blends. Within ‘Harmonic’ Level offers a 1:1, a 1:2 and a 3:1.\n\nThe other day, I came home with an aching shoulder. Advil was not touching it and the cannabis topical that usually might help me was failing to stop a radiating pain. Thinking this was the perfect time to try out my new ‘Remedy’ blend, I broke out the sweet little silver package and popped it on my new “variable temperature” battery. According to the package, ‘Remedy’ promised to “Relieve anxiety and get back into your body. Support healing with a therapeutic mix of mainly CBD.” All of this sounded good.\n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/58c489610adb1b66ae83920d/embedded_images/58c489650adb1b66ae83920f/cbd_PM.png)\nThe Level Blends 'Uplift' high CBD oil cartridge packaging and pen.\n \nI adjusted the temperature control to number 3.6v, just short of the hottest control at 4. I noticed a few things as I looked at my new vape. One, the name ‘Remedy’ is printed on the oil cartridge. How many times have I put on an oil cartridge on a vape pen, put it down and then thought ‘What oil cartridge is on there?’. Way too many times. It’s a huge problem as I don’t smoke high THC strains, but my partner does, so confusion can happen. The next thing I noticed is that the oil cartridge container is glass, which is important because plastic can degrade into your oils, and who wants to vape plastic? Not me. Lastly, the vape pen has a really sturdy, high quality feeling to it.\n\nClicking the button on the pen, it lit up and I was able to take a nice inhale. The taste was in credibly smooth and pleasant. Knowing that I actually still experience psychoactive effects from a high CBD strain that is 3:1, I took 4 more puffs and put it down. Within ten minutes the pain in my shoulder was significantly reduced and a calm, mellow feeling washed over me, while at the same time I felt alert. In another ten minutes I felt no pain and settled in for the evening.\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Drugs became the scapegoat of all the issues that the country was facing, especially during the 1980s when First Lady Nancy Reagan made it her mission to have every child say “Just Say No.” to drugs, which focused the lens on cannabis. The billions of dollars spent on the War on Drugs since that time resulted in a dismal failure, but the stigma against marijuana remains.\r\n\r\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/58b49f05e99d85000ba3172d/embedded_images/58b49f08e99d85000ba3172e/Screen_Shot_2017-02-27_at_10.51.39_AM.png)\r\n The War on Drugs delivered images like this to your parents.\r\n\r\nFast forward to now, and it can be hard to convince your parents that a drug they were once told could turn you into a crazy, lazy, crime-creator could actually help ease their arthritis pain, quell anxiety or even make you a happier person. Yet, an open dialogue is the only way to break down the barrier between misrepresentation and the truth about cannabis. \r\n\r\nRELATED: [CANNABIS 101: THC VS CBD](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-thc-vs-cbd)\r\n\r\n### 1. Help Educate Your Parents\r\n\r\nAs a mid twenties millennial, the way I approached cannabis with my parents was at first extremely matter-of-fact. Though it may seem that an emotional appeal of other peoples’ success with marijuana-as-medicine may be the best way to change perceptions, I found that a science-first approach works best. \r\n\r\nThere are a numerous well documented scientific studies on cannabis that show its efficacy on a variety of medical conditions and how cannabis itself interacts with the body. To understand how cannabis can be a viable medication, it's best to tell your parents how it does not always produce psychoactive side effects. Instead, I told my parents how cannabis is full of [cannabinoids](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabinoids-and-the-immune-system) other than THC, like [CBD, which provides amazing medicinal benefits](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cbd-cannabidiol-the-medicine-of-the-future), all without even getting me high.\r\n\r\nCannabis is also full of [terpenes](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/what-are-terpenes-and-what-is-their-effect) which are non psychoactive and extremely beneficial to our health. Terpenes create the aromas and flavors within different strains and also deliver medicinal benefits to consumers. A terpene such as limonene can act as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and has even been purported to contain anti-cancer properties. Terpenes are good for us!\r\n\r\nThere are a variety of resources you can look to for scientific, peer-reviewed journal articles on the benefits of cannabis. Google Scholar can be one of your best friends by providing you access to many journal articles for free with a single click. \r\n\r\nThese studies, which come out of extremely reputable universities, can give your parents an insight into the success of cannabis in a purely scientific form. [HelloMD](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/download-our-medical-marijuana-patient-study) also provides you with a searchable platform were you can look at a variety of articles on many different medical conditions. These articles are also full of links to peer reviewed studies that show all of the good that cannabis can do in a condensed platform. \r\n\r\nAfter you have educated your parents on the scientific studies behind cannabis, then personal appeals will become that much more impactful. Focusing on scientific studies first when introducing cannabis to my parents gave them the context to look at [peoples’ personal successes](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/marijuana-insomnia-migraines-liz-s-success-story) as a medical triumph. HelloMD has a full range of interviews, in written and video form, which show how people have greatly benefited from cannabis. These types of personal appeals put scientific information into an even more real and understandable form. \r\n\r\n### 2. Mom, Dad, It's Just a Plant\r\n\r\nCannabis has been demonized for generations now, but in the end, it is just a plant. Cannabis as a healing and spiritual herb has been closely tied with human history for thousands of years, being featured in ancient Chinese and Indian history. Cannabis is also the same plant as hemp, just with different amounts of various cannabinoids that draw the line between a medical product and a food stuff. \r\n\r\nI found that a great way to change my parents perception of cannabis was to have them look at hemp itself. Hemp can now be found in almost any grocery store with a health foods section. Hemp seeds are full of essential fatty acids and important minerals, as well lots of protein. Hemp oil features many of the same important dietary qualities of hemp seeds and is filled with good-for-you fats that keep you full and energized. It’s is a great addition to anyone's diet and it doesn't have any of the negatives that are associated with cannabis. Using hemp can be a great bridge between the many misconceptions of cannabis and can show that the basic parts of the plant can have health benefits, even without large amounts of cannabinoids. \r\n\r\n### 3. Tell Your Parents that Bongs are Retro\r\n\r\nCannabis quality has changed greatly, even just in the last ten years. Cannabis is no longer only rolled up in a joint and smoked and a bong, it almost seems retro. Cannabis comes in many different forms, strengths, and with a variety of different administration methods. I have found that cannabis stigma increases when the consumption method is smoking, especially if you talk to your parents about smoking a spliff or a bong. Try talking to your parents about the multitude of ways it can be consumed discreetly and effectively.\r\n\r\nTo many people, the idea of smoking flower evokes thoughts of a specific smell, and conjures the old stoner image. Let's be honest too, specifically, your parents are probably afraid you will be the stoner they hoped you would not be. Yet, the forms of cannabis today, are most likely completely unrecognizable to your parents and also outside of the realm of the taboo. From topical products, to edibles to tinctures, cannabis can be taken in a variety of ways that do not involve smoking at all, and they need to be made aware of this. \r\n\r\nMany cannabis products today, are specifically curated and bred to target a particular condition or symptom. CBD is all the rage today, and is an anti inflammatory, an analgesic and an anti anxiety. CBD specific strains are known to help children who struggle with seizures live a more normal life and the intensely autistic calm violent tendencies. \r\n\r\n### You Can Change Perceptions\r\n\r\nThe bottom line is that marijuana is not a demon drug it has been made out to be and your influence and knowledge can help change the perceptions of those around you, even with your parents. With some science to back you up and some anecdotal evidence of medical success stories, even the most conservative of parents may have a change of heart (well maybe not the most conservative). \r\n\r\nStay positive, be who you are and feel empowered to educate your parents on the positive aspects of cannabis, of which there are many. The same qualities that make cannabis a great medication for a variety of conditions can also lead people to feel anxious, uncomfortable and even paranoid. Cannabis has a biphasic effect, meaning low and high doses of marijuana can have very different effects on people. In small doses, cannabis can help reduce stress and anxiety related to conditions like PTSD. But in high doses, it can lead people to feel extremely anxious, uneasy and nervous. \n\nMaureen Dowd, a well-known _New York Times_ columnist, is now infamous for her [marijuana trip down the anxiety-laced rabbit hole](http://www.forbes.com/sites/daviddisalvo/2014/06/09/why-eating-a-marijuana-candy-bar-sent-maureen-dowd-to-paranoia-hell/#5e15f4c93e65). Dowd bought a cannabis-infused chocolate bar from a Denver dispensary in 2014 and had a most unfortunate experience after consuming the majority of the chocolate.\n\nIt's important to note that the chocolate bar she consumed was intended to have 16 individual doses, but she gobbled it all up, which led to her paralyzingly paranoid experience. Dowd wrote about her living-personal-hell experience; it went insanely viral online, and she got lambasted publicly for her stupidity.\n\n\n_Dowd's bad experience with marijuana made her an internet sensation._\n\nYet, Dowd's experience basically comes down to a lack of education. She was unaware of:\n\n* how much to take\n* how long to wait before consuming more\n* what to do if she had a bad experience\n\nThese are all things that people should be aware of before consuming marijuana.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nCannabis-induced anxiety can echo traditional physical stressors that are experienced by people when they have anxiety attacks. Symptoms like a racing heartbeat, sweating, chills, chest pain, weakness, tingling, numbness and trouble breathing are all physical symptoms of marijuana-induced anxiety. They're harmless, but they can be scary at the time they're experienced. Feeling these physical symptoms can also cause a person to panic, even though they're in no real harm. There has still never been a documented overdose death due to marijuana. \n \nIf you're trying a higher dose of cannabis than you usually take, prepare for the chance that you may experience cannabis-induced anxiety by consuming your marijuana in a safe space with people you trust.\n\n### Tips on How to Manage Your Cannabis-Induced Panic Attack\n\nThe most important thing to remember when experiencing a cannabis-induced anxiety attack is to stay calm if you may feel completely out of control. Keeping calm can help anxiety pass more quickly. Keeping a high-ratio cannabidiol (CBD) tincture on hand is also helpful as it can typically help take the edge off much more quickly. \n\nFor many, CBD, a non-psychoactive cannabinoid, can help decrease the anxiety-producing, psychoactive effects of the THC found in marijuana. Perhaps if Dowd had had some handy, she may have been able to circumvent some of her paranoia hell. What's most important though is to remember that most of the time, less is more, especially for first-time cannabis consumers. \n\nRemember: You can't overdose from marijuana, even if it feels like it at the time of an anxiety attack. Cannabis-induced anxiety doesn't last long, usually 30 minutes to an hour. However, this does depend on the person and how much and what you've consumed.\n\nIn Maureen Dowd's case, she probably felt out of it for 24 hours based on the extremely high dose she took. In most cases though, if you're experiencing cannabis-induced anxiety, remind yourself that you're in no real danger and the feeling will pass. \n\nIt's also important to remove yourself from situations that could worsen your anxiety. For example, if you feel like you're unsafe where you are, this will lead to more anxiety. Also, cannabis-induced anxiety can feed off personal stressors, like social situations that may normally make you anxious. \n\nFocusing on self-care can help your anxiety become more bearable. Engage in an activity that helps you relax and feel comfortable through the anxiety you're experiencing. Whatever it is that can help you feel calm and safe will help your anxiety dissipate more quickly. For example, you could:\n\n* Listen to music that makes you happy\n* Watch an episode of a light-hearted or heart-warming TV show\n* Eat your favorite meal\n* Drink a hot cup of tea\n* Settle into your bed \n\nThough cannabis-induced anxiety may feel inevitable at times, it's important to be aware of how different doses of cannabis affect you so you can try to avoid it in the future. If you've tried a new strain or dosage, and realized that it triggered anxious feelings, make note of it so you can avoid that in the future. Some people are particularly vulnerable to cannabis-induced anxiety. But for most people, anxiety is caused by a specific factor from the marijuana dose they consumed. \n\nTry to recognize if the size of the dose was larger than what you typically consume or if it was a different marijuana strain with higher levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) that may have caused the problem. Many people find it helpful to keep a journal of their cannabis consumption, so they have a record of what and how much they've consumed.\n\nIf you're new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/tag/cannabis-101/) post. Yoga originated in India, during approximately the same time frame when cannabis appeared. Both yoga and cannabis have been closely tied to meditative processes in India for thousands of years and rose to popularity simultaneously in the United States in the 60s and the 70s. \n\nThe original connection between cannabis and yoga is not exactly known, but different historians have tied the two together in different events, ceremonies, and religious significances. It is believed that the Lord Shiva, the destroyer and creator god in Hinduism, who also happens to be the god of yoga, was rejuvenated from injury after consuming cannabis. Some people believe that this religious connection is what incorporated cannabis into yoga practice in the first place. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nCannabis was also present when many of the modern yoga positions were created. Many of the yoga positions we know of today were created in the 7th century by tantric cultures, who practiced a combination of Shaviaite Hinduism and Tibetan Buddhism. Many of these religious cultures used cannabis regularly as part of their practice while they developed many of the aspects of modern Hatha Yoga. \n\nThe Yoga Sutras, which were compiled in 400 CE, outline the 196 main principles of yoga. The Sutras mention the use of “herbs” to help with subtler attainments. It has been argued by some people that herbs means cannabis, while others refute that fact. Many Sadhu’s today, however, use cannabis for spiritual purposes. These Sadhu’s, or Hindu holy men, believe that cannabis allows them to liberate themselves from perceived existential limits. They use cannabis in all aspects of their prayer, including during yoga. \n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/58a38cc01689ad0017e8493b/embedded_images/58a38cc41689ad0017e8493c/Screen_Shot_2017-02-14_at_2.49.37_PM.png)\nCannabis can help you relax and go deeper into your yoga practice.\n \n### Modern Day Cannabis Use\n\nThe idea of cannabis infused yoga was first brought to the United States in 2012. [Dee Dussault], a yoga teacher in San Francisco, opened the [Ganga Yoga](https://www.deedussault.com/) Practice in San Fransisco to provide her clients with a safe space to combine cannabis and their yoga practice. Though cannabis is optional in the classes, it is highly recommended, and the classes are currently only open to patients who have a registered California Medical Marijuana card. \n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS FOR INCREASED PASSION & PLAY PART 1](https://hellomd.com/health-wellness/5887f2c9d88c9d000847c1d0/cannabis-for-increased-passion-and-play-part-1)\n\nCannabis can be used to deepen your yoga practice, whether it is in a cannabis-friendly studio or in the comfort of your own home. Cannabis can help increase your focus and mindfulness during yoga. Sometimes people find it hard to rid themselves of their daily stresses while settling into their yoga practice, but cannabis can help focus the mind and free it from frivolous thoughts. Yoga is all about finding your center within yourself and cannabis can help you achieve that goal. Cannabis helps you to de-stress and prepare yourself to enter a more mediative state. \n\n### Finding the Right Cannabis Product\n\nAs with all physical activity, it is important to dose cannabis in a way that allows you to still very aware of your body and physical space. First, choose a method of administration that you enjoy and one that helps to relax you. If you prefer to smoke or vaporize, consume a small amount of cannabis. Non-psychoactive high CBD strains such as [ACDC](https://www.hellomd.com/marijuana-strains/acdc) or Electra Tsu are a great choice because they can provide you with a high that allows you to stay relaxed, but alert. \n\nSmall, low dose edibles are also a great choice for your yoga practice. Edibles, when taken in small doses, can provide a good, full body high. Edibles, however, it can be difficult to dose properly since many are packaged in large containers. It is always recommended to go low and slow until you understand your own tolerance level.\n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/58a38cc01689ad0017e8493b/embedded_images/58a38cc51689ad0017e8493d/Screen_Shot_2017-02-14_at_2.53.51_PM.png) \nSatori is a HelloMD favorite for cannabis micro dosing.\n\n[Satori bite-sized edibles](https://hellomd.com/brands/5859abb6d50c6c001176da5b) are a great choice for a pre-yoga treat that can bring you into a relaxed, but aware state for your yoga practice. In fact, a recent study released from Duke University and the University of Arizona found that [long-term marijuana use didn’t lead to a decline in health](http://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapsychiatry/article-abstract/2526003). In this study, 1,000 participants from New Zealand were tracked over a 40-year period, each with a minimum of 20 years of consistent cannabis consumption—smoking, specifically. \n\nThe study found no decline in lung function as well as no increase in high blood pressure or diabetes. Nor did it detect any other deterioration in physical health. The one caveat to the study was that the researchers found high levels of gum disease among the study participants. That said, this is a factor that could very well decrease as people move away from smoking marijuana towards vaporizing cannabis as well as consuming edibles or using cannabis-infused topical products. \n\nIn addition, no similarities were found between those who engaged in long-term tobacco smoking versus long-term marijuana smoking. Avshalom Capsi, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Duke University and the co-author of the study, said that “overall damage to physical health is not apparent in this study.” \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Top 11 Reasons Why Marijuana Is Good for You\n\nThis study adds new scientific evidence to the thousands of years of anecdotal evidence, which show that cannabis isn’t bad for your health, nor can it kill you. Meanwhile, 595,690 deaths a year in the U.S. alone are attributed to tobacco. What we’re now finding is that cannabis provides a variety of health benefits for both healthy individuals and those struggling with various illnesses. \n\nHere are 11 key—and sometimes surprising—benefits of cannabis.\n\n### Benefit #1: Cannabis Regulates Metabolism & Weight Loss\n\nA survey conducted at Nunavik Inuit Health in 2004 found that the 57.4% of people in the survey, who said they used cannabis, had a lower average percentage of fat mass, body mass index and fasting insulin levels. There were statistically significant differences between the groups of people who self-reported as smoking cannabis compared to those who didn’t. \n\nSmoking cannabis in the last year was associated with a 56% lower likelihood of obesity. This is just one of the many studies that ties lower rates of obesity to cannabis consumers. Researchers found that cannabis consumers’ waists are 1.5 inches smaller on average than that of non-cannabis users. Cannabis is believed to help regulate your metabolism, also making it a factor in lowering the risk of diabetes. \n\nIn addition, for a number of folks, cannabis can get people off the couch and moving—whether it’s on the road or in the gym. In fact, some claim that marijuana increases athletic performance, for long-distance runners and swimmers in particular. Some athletes claim that it improves focus and the ability to push past previous limitations.\n\n![One benefit of marijuana: regulating metabolism & improving sports performance](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/588fcc137bf61c000cbbd136/embedded_images/588fcc167bf61c000cbbd138/Screen_Shot_2017-01-30_at_3.20.53_PM.png)\n_One of the many benefits of marijuana is improved sports performance, especially in long-distance running._\n \n### Benefit #2: Marijuana Helps Alleviate Depression\n\nDepression is one of the most common medical conditions in the world. In a 2015 study from the University of Buffalo, RIA senior research scientist Samir Haj-Dahmane, Ph.D., said, “In the animal models we studied, we saw that chronic stress reduced the production of endocannabinoids, leading to depression-like behavior.”\n\nThis means that cannabis can be used to supplement endocannabinoids lacking within our system, helping the body return to homeostasis and in turn reducing levels of depression. Cannabis also aids in relieving stress, which is one of the biggest risk factors for depression. \n\n### Benefit #3: Cannabis Slows the Development of Alzheimer’s Disease\n\nAlzheimer’s disease is currently the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States. It also causes mental disability for those afflicted many years prior to death. A study published in the _Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease_ in September 2014 found that, “THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) could be a potential therapeutic treatment option for Alzheimer’s disease through multiple functions and pathways.” This is believed to be due to the neuroprotective and antioxidant qualities of cannabis. \n\n### Benefit #4: Cannabis Relieves Arthritis\n\nArthritis is one of the leading causes of physical disability in the world. And it’s one of the most common kinds of chronic pain that people experience. The first recorded use of cannabis to help heal arthritis was in China nearly 4,000 years ago.\n\nTetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main active compound in most strains of marijuana, has pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, cannabidiol (CBD), which is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid, helps regulate autoimmune conditions like arthritis.\n\n### Benefit #5: Marijuana Eases Chronic Pain\n\nOne of the most common reasons people miss work and have a decreased quality of life is due to various types of chronic pain. From PMS cramps to headaches to back pain, many people are debilitated by daily, overwhelming pain. Due to its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties, cannabis can help reduce pain whether it’s applied in the form of a topical or consumed orally. Cannabis consumption can also help greatly decrease the need for harsh, addictive opioids. \n\n![Marijuana eases chronic pain](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/588fcc137bf61c000cbbd136/embedded_images/588fccc42cf8a800084e13fc/Screen_Shot_2017-01-30_at_3.30.09_PM.png)\n_One of the benefits of cannabis is that it can relieve pain. Learn what the top strains for chronic pain are._\n \n### Benefit #6: Marijuana Lowers Blood Pressure\n\nOne-third of adults in the United States have high blood pressure or hypertension. This can lead to cardiovascular disease as well as strokes or heart attacks. Tobacco is one of the most common causes for high blood pressure, along with poor diet and lack of exercise.\n\nThere are a wide range of scientific and anecdotal studies to support how cannabis decreases blood pressure. Some researchers also believe that cannabinoids may have a protective role within the body, also leading to a decrease in blood pressure. \n\n### Benefit #7: Marijuana Supports Recovery From Eating Disorders\n\nEating disorders are becoming an increasingly large problem across the world as many young people are exposed to constant media and peer pressure to be unattainably beautiful and thin. Cannabis can help regulate eating patterns, aiding with recovery from conditions like bulimia and other binge disorders.\n\nIt can also help stimulate appetite and regain a desire to eat in individuals with eating disorders like anorexia. Cannabis can also help reduce anxiety—both social and food related, which can lead many people down the path of eating disorders.\n\n### Benefit #8: Cannabis Provides Relief to PTSD Sufferers\n\nVeterans have become one of the most vocal supporters of cannabis legalization due to the incredible relief that cannabis can provide to people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Consuming cannabis can help reduce the stress and anxiety that PTSD sufferers struggle with every day. It also reduces the need for harder opioids and medications that can often worsen the symptoms of PTSD.\n\n### Benefit #9: Cannabis Reduces Nausea\n\nMany people experience nausea on a regular basis, whether it’s due to digestive problems, migraines or chemotherapy. Marijuana reacts with brain receptors to help regulate the feelings that are often associated with nausea.\n\nIt can also help decrease stomach pain and regulate your body’s digestive processes—as digestive issues often go hand in hand with feelings of nausea. Cannabis can also help stimulate appetite if people find themselves unable to hold food down, because they’re experiencing queasiness and an unsettled stomach. \n\n### Benefit #10: CBD Can Reduce Seizure Activity\n\nCBD, the non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in marijuana, can greatly reduce the frequency and severity of seizures. Medical marijuana legalization has been pushed through in many states due to the incredible effects that cannabis has on seizures.\n\nA study from the American Academy of Neurology published in 2015 found that there was, on average, a 51% decrease in the amount of seizures people experienced while using medical cannabis, as well as a 63% decrease in seizures for patients who had Dravet’s syndrome.\n\nA specific marijuana strain, Charlotte’s Web, was created particularly for a young girl who experienced extreme seizures. The strain is still widely used due to its effectiveness and lack of psychoactive side effects. \n\n![Another benefit of marijuana: It makes us feel good](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/588fcc137bf61c000cbbd136/embedded_images/588fcc157bf61c000cbbd137/Screen_Shot_2017-01-30_at_3.13.41_PM.png) \n_Another benefit of marijuana, specifically THC, is that it produces feelings of happiness._ \n\n### Benefit #11: Cannabis Makes You Happy\n\nLastly, for the vast majority of people, [marijuana induces a sense of euphoria and calm](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/582b86cce686fc000c657034/why-does-cannabis-make-you-feel-good). Happiness, or a general sense of well-being is something that everyone wants. Scientific studies show a connection between happiness, optimism and overall life satisfaction.\n\nCannabis activates a neurotransmitter in our brain called anandamide—also called the bliss molecule. This molecule, among other things, is responsible for making us feel happy. THC is responsible for stimulating anandamide, which is found both within our body as well as within cannabis itself.\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. This code regulates extracts, whether made from marijuana or hemp, separately then traditional cannabis plants and products. The code allows for cannabis extracts to be tracked and recorded separately than cannabis flowers, but technically does not change anything about the way they are represented or regulated. Marijuana extracts are still viewed as a Schedule I substance by the DEA, no matter if the extract is made from hemp or cannabis. This is a big deal as hemp based products, such as CBD extracts, are regularly sold across state lines on platforms such as Amazon.com.\r\n\r\nThere is a lot of confusion in relation to the recent report because many people do not understand if the regulation of extracts has been changed with the new code. This process of giving extracts a unique code, however, was first initiated in 2011. According to Russ Baer, a DEA spokesman, this recent move by the DEA is mostly administrative, allowing them to have a better handle on what is going on. It does not reflect any changes in DEA policy or how cannabis will be regulated going forward. Much of the confusion surrounding this recent news has come in anticipation of how the industry may change with the incoming Trump administration in January. The DEA completely denies any connection to the administration change and says it is simply assigning the new code to a particular category of cannabis products. \r\n\r\nRELATED: [OPEN LETTER TO JEFF SESSIONS](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/an-open-letter-to-jeff-sessions)\r\n\r\n### CBD Hemp Extracts\r\n\r\nCBD cannabis extracts have always been a grey area in the cannabis world because some are derived form hemp rather than marijuana. Hemp based CBD products are technically covered under this code, meaning that hemp CBD products fall under the category of a Schedule I substance. The DEA did make it clear, however, that this does not really change anything with how they plan on regulating cannabis extracts in states that have internally legalized marijuana, medically or recreationally. \r\n\r\nThe DEA claims it is working towards better understanding of the cannabis industry and how cannabinoids from marijuana could possibly have medicinal benefits. Baer, the [DEA spokesman even said](http://www.thecannabist.co/2016/12/15/dea-cbd-new-rule-marijuana-extracts/69550/), “(The rule change) recognizes that there is a potential medical benefit to some of the cannabinoids.” Though the DEA has put a positive spin on the issue, the marijuana industry as whole is still very skeptical of the move. Some worry it is a power move by the DEA as they attempt to control and regulate all cannabinoids, rather than just marijuana products. The new requirements on cannabis extracts does have the ability to criminalize certain people, like those transporting completely non-psychoactive CBD products. \r\n\r\n### DEA to Focus more on Opioids?\r\n\r\nThe DEA has reiterated, however, that it is focusing its efforts on major problems like the opioid epidemic, rather than targeting people based on small marijuana infractions. When the DEA chose to maintain marijuana’s status as a Schedule I substance, Baer made it clear that innocent cannabis use was not their first priority, “The nation is in the throes of an opioid epidemic, and it is there — not cracking down on offenses such as a mother transporting CBD oil for her daughter across state lines to Nebraska — where the DEA needs to allocate its resources”. \r\n\r\nAs of January 13 of 2017 all extracts with cannabinoids present will be [tracked by the new code](http://www.krcrtv.com/north-coast-news/dea-finalizes-new-cannbis-extract-laws-gives-hard-deadline-of-30-days/211798577) of 7350 and will not be allowed to cross state lines. There have also been indications that there will be a new licensure for people who produce and handle marijuana extracts, since it is now seen as a separate substance than cannabis, but that remains to be seen. As of now, the DEA maintains that there has been no changes to their policy other than an administrative clarification that allows for easier internal tracking of cannabis extracts within the country. \r\n\r\n________________________________________________________\r\n\r\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post.
