Squibb, Medco Research and Axonyx.\n\nHe has years of experience delving into how psychedelics affect the gut microbiome, how psilocybin may be the key to solving autism and why mushrooms are beneficial to our overall health. Below is our interview with Dr. Hausman on research into psilocybin.\n\n\n**Q: Welcome Dr. Hausman, it’s a pleasure to be with you today. I recently saw you speak at the Scientific Microdose conference where you spoke about psilocybin, the microbiome and autism. Let’s start with this. How does the microbiome affect our overall health?**\n\nAnswer: That's an excellent question. I want to start by saying that if you look at an average person, someone standing in front of you, that person is composed of a hundred trillion bacteria and only 31 trillion human cells. And a human is 70 per cent water; how do we hold together? \n\nThe microbiome plays a major part in the health of our bodily system. It's the synergy between the human cell and the bacteria within our body. And it's not just bacteria. There are viruses in our body as well as algae and prokaryotic cells. \n\nWhen the health balance with the microbiome is disturbed, we become sick. An example of this is leaky gut syndrome where material in your intestine moves back into the body. And with it, it carries pathogenic bacteria, leading to irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and even poor mental health. \n\nI worked on a study with The Michael J. Fox Foundation, where we studied Parkinson's disease in an animal model. Many scientists now think that Parkinson’s disease begins in the small intestine, perhaps related to dysfunction of the microbiome. We're learning a lot more about the role of the bacteria in the microbiome and how it correlates to our overall health.\n\n**Q: You're studying how psilocybin may help children with autism. What is the connection between psilocybin, autism, and the microbiome? **\n\nAnswer: This is a broad question, with a lot of different aspects to cover. The problem is that autism is a devastating disease that impacts our society, and we don't have any good solutions. \n\nAt this moment, the causation of autism is not well-known. Is this a developmental problem, it genetic? We also generalize the disease itself and throw everything into one basket because we don't understand the disorder well enough.\n\nI'm predicting that in the next 10 years, you're going to have 10 to 20 distinct autistic sub disorders. And they're going to be treated differently. We know the dopamine system is part of the problem and also the serotonin system.\n\nSerotonin is a neurotransmitter and its levels have been found to be elevated in autistic individuals. 90 per cent of serotonin is made in the small intestine, and the bone marrow. Only 10 per cent is made within the brain! So, we are focusing on studying the role of serotonin in various parts of the body.\n\nWe do know that psilocybin is a serotonin agonist. This means that it binds the serotonin receptors and produces a physiologic effect. We're looking at using our psilocybin to correct serotonin problems. \n\nIs psilocybin the right thing to use? I think so, but I also think we have questions, as Plato said, \"We never know the answer. We only approach the answer.\" Another fact to consider is that treatment with antibiotics has the potential to improve autistic symptoms. \n\n**Q: When treating children autism with psilocybin, how much is appropriate? Is this ongoing treatment, or is it a one-time treatment?**\n\nAnswer: The jury is still out on that answer. It could be one-time. It could be repetitive. Is the dosing going to be a full dose or a microdose that is repeated? We still need to do more research to have those answers, but what we know seems promising.\n\nWhen you sit on a chair, you have legs that hold the chair up. If we think of a stool with three legs, I'm looking at chronic disease and autism as a three-legged stool. \n\nOne leg is behavioral abnormalities. The other leg is inflammation which may play a causative role. The third leg of the stool is the microbiome; corrupted dysfunctional bacteria in the microbiome may lead to immune system disorders and an inflammatory reaction. A vicious unhealthy cascade reaction occurs among all 3 legs.\n\nI think it's the microbiome that is causing the problem with the immune system. An example of this is diabetes. Diabetes may be related to corrupted macrophages in the small intestine. Overeating and poor food choices leads to disruption of the microbiome and problems with macrophage function. \n\nThese dysfunctional macrophages produce cytokines, inflammatory molecules. The cytokines migrate to the liver and cause insulin resistance. The pancreas tries to overcome the insulin resistance by producing more insulin, but the liver cells do not respond. The pancreas cannot keep up and fails; the result is diabetes. \n\nThe same process may be happening in autism. We're using new technology to study the microbiome and the inflammatory molecules called cytokines and compare that to autistic behavior. We believe we're going to have an answer by the end of 2021. \n\n**Q: What's are the benefits of consuming mushrooms and psilocybin**\n\nAnswer: I'd love to talk about a phenomenon in France called the French Paradox. The French Paradox involved towns in Burgundy, France, where they found the people that were living there, lived longer than people in other nearby towns. They all had bad habits including consumption of lots of fatty foods, chronic smoking, etc. Why were they living longer? \n\nOne of the main governmental research institutions in France, started investigating and they found that the longer living people were drinking more burgundy grapes and they also found that there was a substance in the skin of the grapes, called resveratrol.\n\nThe scientists connected resveratrol to a person’s DNA. I know it's a long answer to your question, but the DNA has a tail called the telomere. Every time cells divide you age because little snips fall off. It turns out the telomere determines how long you're going to live. \n\nWhat got me interested in mushrooms is that we found out that grapes had resveratrol but they also had high levels of another important antioxidant molecule, called Ergothioneine. Grapes cannot produce Ergothioneine. Only mushrooms in the ground can produce this compound and grapes absorb this compound as a nutrient. A German scientist approximately 10 years ago discovered a transport system for Ergothioneine. \n\nThat transport system is in every human cell or every mammalian cell. And it has only one function, to transport Ergothioneine into your white cells, red cells, and your stem cells. Mushrooms are very important because not only do they supply Ergothioneine, but they produce other important natural nutritional compounds, such as vitamin D. \n\nInterestingly Health Canada has estimated that 16.1 per cent of the death rate in Canada is due to vitamin D deficiency. \n\n**Q: How does the entourage effect work with mushrooms? Is it the same as cannabis?**\n\nAnswer: The entourage effect is a term that really refers back to cannabis but is relevant to mushrooms as well. \n\nThe term entourage effect means that the substances within cannabis work better together than individually. The whole is better than the parts. THC and the cannabinoids work together. More bioavailability and increased biologic action because of the entourage effect. \nAnd I think that the entourage principle applies also to the fungal kingdom, not just cannabis. Cannabis and mushrooms grow in nature and are considered foods. Mushrooms are the largest food kingdom in the world. The entourage effect plays a role in many foods.\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3071895424836601,"src":"/static/2d7076401e1b9272ad51903a860e2b75/ee604/5ec08fc0d57fda7752d731eb0fd56c6a.png","srcSet":"/static/2d7076401e1b9272ad51903a860e2b75/69585/5ec08fc0d57fda7752d731eb0fd56c6a.png 200w,\n/static/2d7076401e1b9272ad51903a860e2b75/497c6/5ec08fc0d57fda7752d731eb0fd56c6a.png 400w,\n/static/2d7076401e1b9272ad51903a860e2b75/ee604/5ec08fc0d57fda7752d731eb0fd56c6a.png 800w,\n/static/2d7076401e1b9272ad51903a860e2b75/f3583/5ec08fc0d57fda7752d731eb0fd56c6a.png 1200w,\n/static/2d7076401e1b9272ad51903a860e2b75/10bc8/5ec08fc0d57fda7752d731eb0fd56c6a.png 1206w","srcWebp":"/static/2d7076401e1b9272ad51903a860e2b75/58556/5ec08fc0d57fda7752d731eb0fd56c6a.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/2d7076401e1b9272ad51903a860e2b75/61e93/5ec08fc0d57fda7752d731eb0fd56c6a.webp 200w,\n/static/2d7076401e1b9272ad51903a860e2b75/1f5c5/5ec08fc0d57fda7752d731eb0fd56c6a.webp 400w,\n/static/2d7076401e1b9272ad51903a860e2b75/58556/5ec08fc0d57fda7752d731eb0fd56c6a.webp 800w,\n/static/2d7076401e1b9272ad51903a860e2b75/99238/5ec08fc0d57fda7752d731eb0fd56c6a.webp 1200w,\n/static/2d7076401e1b9272ad51903a860e2b75/5c285/5ec08fc0d57fda7752d731eb0fd56c6a.webp 1206w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3590-markdown","title":"Long Haul COVID Symptoms – Can Cannabis Help?","slug":"long-haul-covid-symptoms-can-cannabis-help","content":"COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, can affect people in a multitude of ways ranging from very mild illness to severe complications and death. Many people recover from COVID-19 with no lasting effects, but a small group of COVID-19 survivors experience lingering symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath and “brain fog” for months after their apparent recovery. \n\nResearchers are still working to understand the condition that’s commonly called “long haul” COVID, but new clinics dedicated to their problems are helping patients cope with their symptoms – and recent research suggests that [innovative treatments](https://www.wsj.com/articles/experimental-drugs-aim-to-treat-long-haul-covid-11608569400) including cannabis could provide relief.\n\n### The Mystery of Long Haul COVID\nThe novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 is so new that researchers around the world are still working to unravel its mysteries. \n\nBecause the SARS-CoV-2 virus can attach to a cell receptor called ACE2 that’s found in many kinds of tissues, COVID-19 [symptoms can vary widely](https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/symptoms-testing/symptoms.html), ranging from the well-known fever, cough and body aches to less-common gastrointestinal problems like stomach pain and diarrhea, or cardiovascular issues such as blood clots. \n\nCOVID-19 can affect anyone, although seniors and those with other health problems are generally at higher risk of serious complications. And as the immune system ramps up defenses against the virus, it causes the “cytokine storm” that overwhelms the organs and can lead to death. \n\nBarring complications, people typically recover from COVID-19 in seven to ten days. But for about 30 percent of those who contract the virus, a variety of symptoms can linger for weeks and even months after the acute phase of the virus. \n\nDoctors have long known that people who become severely ill with COVID-19 can be left with a long list of potentially serious health issues. But those who experience long haul COVID are typically people who have had a milder form of the virus. For them, some of the symptoms they had while ill simply never go away. Those can include:\n\n- Shortness of breath\n- Brain fog\n- Joint pain\n- Persistent cough\n- Impaired sense of taste or smell\n- Fatigue\n- Headaches\nThese symptoms can disrupt daily life in a multitude of ways. Some long haul COVID patients can no longer work. For others, exercise is impossible. Brain fog and chronic pain can make it hard to manage even the simplest routine tasks. \n\n### Long Haul COVID Clinics Help Patients Cope\n\nBecause COVID-19 is such a new disease, researchers are still struggling to understand the reasons for such a wide variation in symptoms and individual responses to the virus, and that includes the mystery of long haul COVID. \n\nSome patients say that their doctors are skeptical of their condition and attribute it to other factors such as a different infection, chronic fatigue syndrome or stress. That makes it hard for COVID long haulers to get the help they need to [manage symptoms and take steps toward recovery](https://www.healthline.com/health-news/how-to-try-to-recover-if-you-have-long-haul-covid-19-symptoms#Common-long-haul-symptoms).\n\nNow, though, [special COVID care clinics](https://www.modernhealthcare.com/providers/we-know-this-real-new-clinics-aid-virus-long-haulers) are springing up around the country. These clinics can offer a variety of targeted therapies to support recovery, such as physical therapy, diet plans, breathing exercises, and mental health resources. Above all, these clinics provide reassurance that the symptoms are real and COVID-related, and that help is possible. \n\n In hard-hit South Los Angeles, St. John’s Well Child and Family network of community clinics, doctors work to follow up and offer outreach to everyone who tests positive for the virus. Other clinics, such as the University of Texas Medical Branch facilities, offer assessment and treatment to anyone whose symptoms haven’t subsided within a few weeks of contracting the virus.\n\nThere’s currently no cure for long haul COVID, and no clear data on how long it might last. But researchers are exploring whether some treatments and therapies designed for other conditions might help to treat COVID in general – and potentially for long haul COVID as well. An essential enzyme known as NAD+, ivermectin, a medication originally intended as an antiparasitic, and cannabis are among the many options being explored.\n\n### NAD+: A New Use for an Essential Enzyme\nNicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD, is a coenzyme that’s found in all living cells. In its active form it’s called NAD+, and recently it’s become the [focus of intense research](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6751327) \n for its ability to boost the functioning of a multitude of key biological processes. \n\nNAD+ supports DNA and cell repair, helps the body extract energy from food, and encourages the optimal functioning of chromosomes. But as the body ages, it makes less NAD+, which leads to weaker defenses against disease and greater risk of age-related problems such as cognitive decline and muscle weakness. \n\nResearch suggests that NAD+ supplementation, especially in the form of [IV infusions](https://www.icryo.com/nad-iv-therapy/), can improve brain function, fight chronic fatigue, regenerate cells and boost the metabolism. And some studies have found that NAD+ infusions could inhibit the COVID complications that arise from the cytokine storm, an overreaction of the immune system as it attempts to fight the virus.\n\n### Ivermectin: New Applications for an Old Drug\n\nIn the rush to find treatments for all types of COVID illness, researchers have been exploring ways to repurpose existing drugs created to treat other conditions. One of these is ivermectin, a medication originally developed to treat parasitic infections. \n\nAlthough ivermectin is FDA-approved for that purpose, it hasn’t yet been approved for treating symptoms of COVID-19. Still, [in preliminary studies](https://www.thelancet.com/journals/eclinm/article/PIIS2589-5370(20)30464-8/fulltext), ivermectin has been shown to reduce inflammation and interfere with the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein that attaches to cell membranes. \n\nResearchers warn that more studies are needed to say with certainty that ivermectin can play a meaningful role in treating COVID-19. Some study participants showed improvement in their symptoms, while others didn’t. The [National Institutes of Health has decided](https://www.covid19treatmentguidelines.nih.gov/statement-on-ivermectin/), at least for now, against recommending it as a valid treatment for COVID-19, but the NIH also leaves the decision to use ivermectin up to individual doctors and their patients.\n\n### Cannabis Could Help COVID Long Haulers\n\nThe many compounds in cannabis work with the body’s natural endocannabinoid system to provide many health benefits, and research continues to reveal more ways these compounds can help to keep brain and body in balance. \n\nCannabidiol CBD, delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, and more than 100 other compounds work together to boost immune functioning, [reduce inflammation](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-cbd-can-curb-chronic-inflammation), and keep the body’s many subsystems working in sync.\n\nStudies have also shown that cannabis is a powerful neuroprotectant capable of preserving neural pathways in the brain after trauma such as a brain injury or stroke. All of these properties make cannabis a promising candidate for relieving many symptoms of COVID-19 that affect the long haulers.\n\nA [recent study](https://www.forbes.com/sites/lindseybartlett/2021/01/21/new-study-shows-cannabis-reduces-inflammatory-storms-caused-by-covid-19/?sh=4e4db13e6d0a)\n suggests that some cannabis strains could help to reduce the out of control immune reactions that cause some of the most severe effects of the virus. And other [recent research](https://www.cannabissciencetech.com/view/covid-19-lung-inflammation-reduced-by-cbd) shows that cannabis strains high in CBD may help to reduce lung inflammation and damage that frequently occurs with severe COVID-19. \n\nFor those reasons, cannabis could also be useful for relieving many of the symptoms of long haul COVID. Because it’s often used for arthritis and other kinds of [chronic pain](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-cannabis-relieves-pain-better-than-opioids-do), it may help with the joint aches and frequent headaches that come with long haul COVID. \n\nSome cannabis strains can be especially useful for boosting focus and concentration, so they may help with the brain fog and cognitive problems that go along with long haul COVID. Cannabis can also help to relieve anxiety and depression, which affect many people dealing with long-term COVID symptoms.\n\nCannabis advocates warn that it’s best to avoid smoking cannabis if you’re suffering from COVID symptoms, since that can irritate the lungs. Consider vaping, fast-acting tinctures or edibles instead.\n\nBecause COVID-19 is so new, researchers still don’t understand why some people become COVID long haulers. But cannabis and other innovative treatments can help them feel better while symptoms linger on.\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.5037593984962405,"src":"/static/e759c0613c574a57d9b74fa46c9904d9/ee604/11d626b6542d3cb6af888d26057ce8de.png","srcSet":"/static/e759c0613c574a57d9b74fa46c9904d9/69585/11d626b6542d3cb6af888d26057ce8de.png 200w,\n/static/e759c0613c574a57d9b74fa46c9904d9/497c6/11d626b6542d3cb6af888d26057ce8de.png 400w,\n/static/e759c0613c574a57d9b74fa46c9904d9/ee604/11d626b6542d3cb6af888d26057ce8de.png 800w,\n/static/e759c0613c574a57d9b74fa46c9904d9/f3583/11d626b6542d3cb6af888d26057ce8de.png 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/e759c0613c574a57d9b74fa46c9904d9/58556/11d626b6542d3cb6af888d26057ce8de.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/e759c0613c574a57d9b74fa46c9904d9/61e93/11d626b6542d3cb6af888d26057ce8de.webp 200w,\n/static/e759c0613c574a57d9b74fa46c9904d9/1f5c5/11d626b6542d3cb6af888d26057ce8de.webp 400w,\n/static/e759c0613c574a57d9b74fa46c9904d9/58556/11d626b6542d3cb6af888d26057ce8de.webp 800w,\n/static/e759c0613c574a57d9b74fa46c9904d9/99238/11d626b6542d3cb6af888d26057ce8de.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3179-markdown","title":"Finding Your Flow State During COVID with Cannabis & Psilocybin","slug":"finding-your-flow-state-during-covid-with-cannabis-and-psilocybin","content":"Athletes say they're \"in the zone,\" and musicians say they're \"in the groove.\" And if you've ever been deeply engrossed in an activity and you don't notice time passing, you know that feeling too. It's when you're so completely present and engaged in an activity that the rest of the world seemingly disappears. \n\nFlow state plays a role in our mental and physical well-being, but the stresses and concerns of the COVID-19 pandemic have made it more difficult for many people to find flow in daily life. There are [plenty of ways](https://www.verywellmind.com/ways-to-achieve-flow-2794769) to rediscover your flow state – and recent research suggests that mind-expanding substances like cannabis and psilocybin can help.\n\n### Flow State Defined \n\nFalling into flow state is easy when you're completely engaged in an activity you enjoy. When the key elements of a flow state come together, time can slow down, and you're so focused on the activity you're oblivious to everything else. Senses become heightened, and there's a feeling that the body and mind are working in sync. So much so that you don't even have to think about what you're doing. \n\nMuch of our modern understanding of the flow state comes from the [pioneering work of psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi](https://www.ted.com/talks/mihaly_csikszentmihalyi_flow_the_secret_to_happiness?language=endr), who explored how becoming immersed in creativity, play, or any other engaging activity could contribute to overall fulfillment and happiness in life. \n\nBeing in the flow is often associated with creative work or athletics, but it can come from many other things, too. Whatever they are, flow-state activities usually have a few characteristics in common:\n\nThey're activities you enjoy doing and where you excel\n\nFlow activities are often directed at a goal. This could be an athlete training for a competition or an artist working to complete a painting. But flow state can also come from the pleasure of the process itself, without an end goal in mind.\n\nIt pushes you to use your skills at the highest level. The activity is neither so easy that you get bored, nor so difficult that you get frustrated and give up. But it usually adds a new challenge that pushes you a little beyond your comfort zone.\n\nIt requires intense concentration, and this complete focus on the task at hand produces better work and higher performance.\n\nIt creates a sense of clarity, so that you know just what to do without consciously thinking of it. The mind and body work in sync to carry out tasks.\n\nActions \"flow\" without the mind's negative chatter. During flow state, self-doubt, self-criticism, and uncertainty disappear.\n\nAt the end of a flow state, people usually feel invigorated, exhilarated, and self-confident – and the benefits can last well beyond the experience itself. Research reveals that regularly spending time in flow state can boost self-esteem and lead to a general sense of well-being and accomplishment that affects all other areas of life.\n\n### Getting Into the Flow\nFor most people, flow state happens during the course of pursuing something enjoyable. But psychologists following Csikszentmihalyi's work, along with a long list of life coaches, therapists, and others working to unravel the secrets of human potential, have outlined some specific steps anyone can take to get into the flow of what they're doing. Among their suggestions:\n\nCreate a ritual around the activity you're doing. Rituals \"prime\" the brain to start the activity and direct awareness toward it. Rituals can be as simple as getting coffee and turning off the phone, or laying out supplies – whatever signals dedication to the work at hand.\n\nDon't multitask. If the activity has multiple parts, choose the most important one and focus only on it.\n\nReduce or eliminate distractions whenever possible before you begin. That might include closing your office door, turning off the phone, or telling people you won't be available for a period of time.\n\nFigure out the time of day when you're at your most productive, and try to do the flow activity during that time.\n\nThese practical steps can set up conditions for a flow state to happen. But researchers studying flow state have also learned that practices that encourage focus and concentration can also help people to experience flow. Meditation, mindfulness and [focus-enhancing substances such as cannabis and psilocybin](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/why-interrupting-the-default-mode-network-with-psychedelics-is-good-for-mental-health) can also help people find flow and reap its benefits.\n\n### Meditation and Mindfulness Can Encourage Flow\n\nFlow and meditation share some commonalities. Like flow, meditation works best when you eliminate distractions. And both meditation and mindfulness involve total focus on the present moment, and a detachment from negative thoughts. \n\nFor those reasons, meditation and mindfulness practices can help people improve focus and concentration, and those practices could make it easier to find the flow in other activities, too. But new research reveals that chemical compounds such as cannabis and psilocybin may play an important role in opening up the mind to flow.\n\n### Cannabis & Flow State\n\nThe many compounds in the cannabis sativa plant work with the body's endocannabinoid system, a network of receptors found throughout the organs and tissues, for a variety of beneficial effects. In particular, [CBD and THC can work together](https://wayofleaf.com/cannabis/ailments/best-marijuana-strains-for-staying-totally-focused) with receptors in the brain to boost focus and concentration, which are essential for flow state. The [most popular strains](https://www.leafly.com/news/strains-products/best-cannabis-strains-for-focus-and-addadhd) for helping with focus and mood include:\n\n[Harlequin](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/harlequin), a sativa-dominant strain with a CBD to THC ratio of 5:2. This strain is also popular for pain relief and boosting mood, and it helps with finding focus during daily tasks.\n\nCinex, another Sativa strain with a considerable amount of THC, produces a \"clearheaded high\" and is popular among artists and other creatives.\n\nMother's Helper is a perfectly balanced (1:1) hybrid strain often used to relieve symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder. This strain supports focus and motivation, but its high THC content can also increase anxiety.\n\n### Breaking Down Barriers with Psilocybin\n\nPsilocybin is the active ingredient in \"magic mushrooms\" beloved of yesterday's hippie trippers. But now [researchers are discovering](https://www.wired.com/2014/10/magic-mushroom-brain/)\nhow these chemicals can disrupt activity in areas of the brain related to self-consciousness and the ego. That creates the [sense of expanded consciousness](https://www.scienceandnonduality.com/article/your-brain-on-psilocybin) that's also present in flow states, when people \"lose themselves\" in favorite activities.\n\nJaime Wheal and Steven Kotler are at the forefront of altered states of consciousness for greater productivity and life satisfaction. Their book, [Stealing Fire](https://www.stevenkotler.com/book-pages/stealing-fire)\nexamines how careful use of psilocybin and other psychedelic substances can boost creativity, fuel aspirations, and help people achieve more than ever before.\n\nThese substances affect brain areas connected to learning, memory, and the awareness of the self. In small doses, they form new connections between these areas and disrupt existing ones. According to Wheal and Kotler, that breaks down the barriers to experiencing flow in all areas of life.\n\nIn a [recent presentation](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koHeGZn1p9M), Wheal notes that the potential for flow is in everyone, and this natural \"altered state\" has profound benefits for body and mind. The constant uncertainty of the COVID pandemic may make it harder to find your flow, but today's new research reveals ways to rediscover that magical state anytime you like.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.492537313432836,"src":"/static/f0706c75562fb59316e72210bfb0002d/ee604/7f5a2ce2b493145279496abec41385e2.png","srcSet":"/static/f0706c75562fb59316e72210bfb0002d/69585/7f5a2ce2b493145279496abec41385e2.png 200w,\n/static/f0706c75562fb59316e72210bfb0002d/497c6/7f5a2ce2b493145279496abec41385e2.png 400w,\n/static/f0706c75562fb59316e72210bfb0002d/ee604/7f5a2ce2b493145279496abec41385e2.png 800w,\n/static/f0706c75562fb59316e72210bfb0002d/f3583/7f5a2ce2b493145279496abec41385e2.png 1200w,\n/static/f0706c75562fb59316e72210bfb0002d/3ce3d/7f5a2ce2b493145279496abec41385e2.png 1394w","srcWebp":"/static/f0706c75562fb59316e72210bfb0002d/58556/7f5a2ce2b493145279496abec41385e2.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/f0706c75562fb59316e72210bfb0002d/61e93/7f5a2ce2b493145279496abec41385e2.webp 200w,\n/static/f0706c75562fb59316e72210bfb0002d/1f5c5/7f5a2ce2b493145279496abec41385e2.webp 400w,\n/static/f0706c75562fb59316e72210bfb0002d/58556/7f5a2ce2b493145279496abec41385e2.webp 800w,\n/static/f0706c75562fb59316e72210bfb0002d/99238/7f5a2ce2b493145279496abec41385e2.webp 1200w,\n/static/f0706c75562fb59316e72210bfb0002d/936bb/7f5a2ce2b493145279496abec41385e2.webp 1394w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3178-markdown","title":"DIY Recipe: Heartwarming Rosebud Green Tea Infused with CBD","slug":"diy-recipe-heartwarming-rosebud-green-tea-infused-with-cbd","content":"There is something about taking a moment, especially during a particularly stressful day and making a warm cuppa tea can make almost anything just a bit better, especially so during the COVID-19 pandemic. That incredible combination of stepping away for a moment to focus on something else (making tea), feeling the warmth of the cup relax the muscles in your hands, and watching the steam rise - your first sip goes a long way toward melting your worries away. And science agrees!\n\nAccording to CNN Health’s Article [“Why drinking tea might just help in a crisis”](https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/21/health/tea-mental-health-benefits-wellness/index.html) a review of more than 100 studies found that green tea can offer three significant benefits to the brain. It can reduce anxiety, boost cognitive abilities, and support healthy brain function, specifically memory.\n\nNot a fan of green tea? No worries. A study by the University College London shows that black tea can help inhibit stress hormones like cortisol. Yes, you heard that right: [black tea soothes stress.](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/10/061004173749.html) \n\nWe can think of only one thing that would make tea an even more potent way to reduce stress. That’s adding the stuff incredible benefits of [CBD to your brew](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/whats-so-great-about-cannabidiol-or-cbd).\n\nThe Benefits of Cannabis and Cannabidiol (CBD)\nSaying to yourself, [“How can can cannabis help me?”](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-cbd-and-how-can-it-help-me) That’s one of our favorite topics. We could talk about it all day, but we’ll keep brief. We know you’re here to learn to make DIY Cannabis Tea. \n\nThe cannabis plant contains many naturally-occurring cannabinoids. Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of them. CBD isn’t known to cause intoxicating side effects--those come primarily from another cannabinoid: Tetrahydrocannabinol or (THC). CBD’s claim to fame is its ability to affect neurological receptors responsible for mood, stress, and pain management. \n\n To add the benefits of CBD to your tea you have two choices: a CBD product from a dispensary or using a high CBD strain of flower. The market is full of pure CBD oils, tinctures, and disolvables that you can add to your favorite drinks, and they can be a fast, no-fuss way to add the benefits of CBD to your favorite beverages. \n\nWhile they are high in CBD, they may not be your most therapeutic option. There is mounting evidence to show that CBD is [most therapeutic when THC is also present](https://bpspubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1111/j.1476-5381.2011.01238.x) As usual, nature knows best. Using the plant in its natural form is likely the most therapeutic option.\n\n If you’re looking for the benefits of CBD but want to avoid THC’s psychoactive effects, you can brew your tea with a cannabis strain that’s higher in CBD and lower in THC. \n\nWe’ve got a few suggestions listed in the recipe itself, which is coming right up! \n\n### Ingredients for DIY Cannabis Tea With High CBD Strains \n4 cups of water\n1 tablespoon of unsalted butter or coconut oil. \n1/4 teaspoon loose leaf green tea \n1/4 teaspoon loose leaf [organic rose buds](https://www.etsy.com/listing/541490750/organic-dried-rose-damascena-buds-bulk?gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_e-home_and_living-food_and_drink-herbs_and_spices_and_seasonings-herbs_and_spices&utm_custom1=_k_Cj0KCQiA9P__BRC0ARIsAEZ6irhoSZvGFaPW1A8LxJ16djzNBbRNlXIJQwVztI7hjvAqBiRqRmJQsGQaAvDyEALw_wcB_k_&utm_content=go_1844702805_75381303731_346364747985_pla-306107311649_c__541490750_118285753&utm_custom2=1844702805&gclid=Cj0KCQiA9P__BRC0ARIsAEZ6irhoSZvGFaPW1A8LxJ16djzNBbRNlXIJQwVztI7hjvAqBiRqRmJQsGQaAvDyEALw_wcB)\n1 gram of dried cannabis bud , we've chosen [Charlotte’s Web](https://viva.hellomd.com/strains/charlotte's-web)\n\n### Equipment\nAn herb grinder or sharp knife\nA saucepan \nA spoon\nA strainer \nYour favorite mug \n\n### How To Make DIY Cannabis Tea With High CBD Strains\n\n### Step 1: Grind or Chop Cannabis \n\nIf you have an herb-grinder, grind the cannabis until it looks “chopped” not powdery. If it is too fine, you’ll have a difficult time straining it from your tea. You can also use a sharp knife to chop your cannabis. If you like, you can remove seeds and stems but keep them around. You might like to add a stem or two later in the process.\n\nStep 2: Boil 4 Cups Of Water\nGet that saucepan out and boil some water. We say boil, but there is a bit of debate in the tea community about boiling vs. heating water for tea. We’ll just [leave this link here](https://www.thespruceeats.com/how-to-brew-tea-water-temperatures-766316) and let you make this call for yourself. \n\nStep 3: Add Butter or Oil And Let It Melt Completely\nSounds funny, we know, but this recipe needs a little fat or oil. That’s because cannabinoids like CBD and TCH need to bind to fat in order to be available to your body. Without the fat, they’d pass right through. So if you want those therapeutic benefits, add that fat! \n\nWhile it’s melting you can read this little article about [why you need to eat fat with your cannabis](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/why-you-need-to-eat-fat-with-your-cannabis). \n\n### Step 4: Add Cannabis And Tea Bag or Loose Leaf Tea To Your Boiling Water\nJust pop them in the saucepan with the water. That’s all there is to it!\n\n### Step 5: Allow To Boil For 7-10 Minutes\nStir your tea frequently. It’s soothing, meditative and helps the ingredients infuse the water, rather than sticking to the sides of your pot.\n\nTip: If you want to increase potency by adding cannabis shake, stems or flowers this is a great time to do it. Never heard of shake? Give this a read: [what’s cannabis shake and is it as potent as bud.](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/whats-cannabis-shake-and-is-it-as-potent-as-bud-is) \n\n### Step 6: Allow Tea To Steep For 10 Minutes.\nTurn the heat down (or off completely) and let your mixture mingle. It can be tempting to skip (or skimp) on this step but try to be patient. To get the most benefits from your tea, you’ll need to treat it like the herbal infusion it is and let it steep.\n\nWhile it’s steeping, you can [read more about herbal infusions](https://www.thespruceeats.com/how-to-make-an-herbal-infusion-1762142#:~:text=To%20make%20a%20decoction%2C%20combine,liquid%20into%20the%20storage%20jar) It’ll make those ten minutes pass faster.\n\n### Step 7: Remove Your Pan From The Heat. \nWe’re about to handle it and that burner will just get in the way.\n\n### Step 8: Scoop The Tea Bag Out With Your Spoon.\nUnless you used loose leaf tea. Then move on to Step 9. \n\n### Step 9: Pour Tea Through A Strainer Lined With Cheesecloth And Into Your Cup\nThis will remove all plant matter, both cannabis and tea leaves, from your drink. If you’re not telling fortunes, you don’t need them in your cup! \n\nIf you have a small strainer, like the kind used for [pourover coffee](https://www.seriouseats.com/2014/06/make-better-pourover-coffee-how-pourover-works-temperature-timing.html) you can place your mug under the strainer and pour. If you’re using a larger strainer you might want to opt for a teapot or bowl and then transfer the tea to your mug.\n\n### Enjoy Your DIY Cannabis Tea!\nWell done! You deserve a cup! Curl up on your couch, wrap your hands around that warm cup and sip away knowing that you’ve done two great things to lower your stress level. And a short detox that promises to cleanse the body and reset the mind just is where to start. With a focus on healthy, unprocessed foods and infrared heat to eliminate toxins, with a little cannabis thrown in to keep the body in balance, this seven-day detox can help you ring in the new year on a healthier, happier note.\n\n### What's a Detox?\n\nDetox – short for detoxification – regimens come in many forms, but they all aim to help cleanse the body from toxins absorbed from foods and the environment. Advocates say that detoxing creates a \"clean slate\" that prepares the body for a new, healthier way of living.\n\nWe take in toxins every day from a variety of sources. Many are found in foods, including additives like artificial flavors and preservatives, colorings, and heavy metals, mainly from fish and other seafood. Heavily processed food that contains large amounts of fats and sugars can also add a toxic load. The body can also absorb toxins from polluted air, unfiltered water, and household solvents. Toxins in clothing can also be absorbed through the skin.\n\nThe body has its own system for clearing toxins – the bloodstream, liver, and kidneys. But detox advocates say that specific detox regimens designed to eliminate toxins can help those organs and systems function better and remain healthy. \n\nMainstream medical professionals aren't so sure, though. [Many point out](https://www.nccih.nih.gov/health/detoxes-and-cleanses-what-you-need-to-know)\n that the body's filtering system will naturally take care of toxins. Medical professionals say it's more important to focus on boosting the immune system and staying healthy than undertaking a detox.\n\nIn some cases, too, detoxing can be dangerous. Some detox regimens involve fasting, limiting the intake of certain foods and beverages, or other strategies that could pose risks for people with diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart problems. \n\nIn general, though, [doctors say](https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/expert-answers/detox-diets/faq-20058040#:~:text=However%2C%20there's%20little%20evidence%20that,and%20eliminating%20most%20ingested%20toxins) that for most people, a short detox likely isn't harmful and could be beneficial if it eliminates unhealthy foods and promotes exercise or other healthy habits.\n\nDetoxes can be as short as a few days or as long as a month, and they can include a wide range of activities and food choices ranging from intermittent fasting to juice cleanses and \"green eating.\" Many detoxes also include [sweat-inducing activities](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3312275/) like saunas, hot yoga, or exercise to help clear toxins through the skin. \n\nThis 7 day New Year detox combines all of these elements, emphasizing rebalancing the body's many systems and boosting its natural defenses against disease.\n\n### Cleanse With Cannabis\n\nIn times past, cannabis would have been one of the things you detox from, not with. But today's research reveals that cannabis in its many forms has an important role to play in maintaining balance among the body's many systems. The cannabis sativa plant contains more than one hundred cannabinoid compounds, including the well-known psychoactive THC (delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol), an immune-boosting compound with no psychoactive effects. \n\nThe endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a vast network of cell receptors found in human organs and tissues, including the brain and skin. It responds to natural cannabinoids produced by the body, including cannabinoids from cannabis and a few other plant sources. \n\nThis system plays an important role in [maintaining homeostasis, or balance](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/marijuana-cannabinoids-and-homeostasis-a-balancing-act), in functions such as regulating temperature and modulating immune responses. \n\nCannabis compounds like THC and CBD appear to be [adaptogenic](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/adaptogens-what-are-they-and-how-to-combine-them-with-cbd) – they work with the endocannabinoid system to damp down over functioning systems and boost the responses of those that aren't performing at optimum levels. In that way, cannabis can support immune functioning, reduce inflammation and moderate mood.\n\nThat's why [some cannabis advocates think](https://www.wellandgood.com/marijuana-detox-healthy-cleanses/)\n that cannabis can be a beneficial addition to a detox routine. To try it out, make healthy eating the centerpiece of your detox week. Omit processed foods, sugar, unhealthy fats, and alcohol. Focus on eating plant-based foods that include plenty of nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables with no additives or preservatives.\n\nCannabis can be worked into your detox in a variety of ways. Make your own cannabis-infused edibles, or try vaping or a CBD tincture. But smoking cannabis can defeat the purpose of your detox because it can create toxins of its own from combustion.\n\n### Healthy Heat with an Infrared Sauna\n\nSweating is a natural way to eliminate toxins – and if you're generally healthy, an [infrared sauna can be a safe way](https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/article/biohacking-articles/science-of-sauna/) to add the benefits of sweating to your detox without exposure to the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. \n\nInfrared light is used in pediatric hospitals to keep vulnerable newborns warm, and for adults, it may have benefits including pain relief, support for wound healing, and improved flexibility. Infrared saunas – an enclosed area bathed in infrared light – are often used by physical therapists and chiropractors to help loosen tight muscles and relieve aches and pains. Some research also suggests that infrared sauna treatments can benefit conditions such as congestive heart failure, dementia, and diabetes. \n\nPersonal infrared saunas are available from natural wellness and home furnishing companies in a range of sizes and prices. You can also wrap yourself in an [infrared sauna blanket](https://goop.com/wellness/detox/infrared-sauna-blanket/), which provides the same sweat-inducing heat in any comfortable place. Medical experts say that an infrared sauna provides benefits similar to moderate exercise, such as working up a good sweat and elevating the heart rate.\n\n### A Plant-Based Vegan Diet\n\nMany harsh detox plans place tight restrictions on eating and drinking. But basing your detox on a [plant-based vegan diet](http://www.eatingwell.com/article/291280/7-day-vegan-sugar-detox-meal-plan/) is good both for your health and for the environment. A weeklong detox that's fueled by plenty of fruits, vegetables and plant-based proteins such as lentils, tofu and chickpeas can provide energy and a long list of essential nutrients that support the immune system and reduce inflammation.\n\nTo make the switch to vegan plant-based eating, eliminate dairy products, animal proteins, eggs, and processed foods. Substitute almond, soy or oatmilk for dairy milk, and switch out meat for the many alternatives that range from the familiar veggie burger to plant-based versions of things like tuna, sausage, and deli sliced meats. Or consider the humble but versatile tofu as a base for many dishes. Cannabis can also be added to a wide variety of veggie-based foods for added immune system and detox support.\n\nA short detox program can help to cleanse both the body and mind of accumulated toxins. From brand-new cooks trying their hand at homemade meals, home-baked bread pictures on Facebook, to a heightened interest in the immune-boosting power of healthy foods; the COVID-19 pandemic created new habits, revealed new insights about the healthful properties of simple kitchen staples, and ushered in some of the hottest, and healthiest, food trends for 2021.\n\n### Functional Food is Wellness\n\nFor years, doctors and nutritionists have encouraged people to \"eat healthy,\" with the usual advice to avoid such things as processed foods, sugars, and fats and of course, you need to get plenty of fruits and vegetables. \n\nBut [new insights](https://www.today.com/food/these-will-be-biggest-healthy-food-trends-2021-according-dietitian-t203476)\n about the powerful nutritional benefit of a wide range of foods reveal that food can be medicine, too – and that we can consciously choose to fill our diet with \"functional\" foods that have documented health benefits for both body and mind.\n\n Whether that means eating more cruciferous veggies like broccoli and cauliflower for antioxidants or cooking with olive oil for omega 3 fatty acids, there's a growing awareness of the [health benefits of everyday foods](https://www.foodnavigator-usa.com/Article/2020/10/19/Whole-Foods-reveals-top-10-food-trends-for-2021)\n – and increasing interest in new foods with even more nutritional value.\n\nThe ongoing pandemic (when will it end?) has changed our relationship with food, and opened the door for some of 2021's buzziest trends. As restaurants and other eating places close or limit operations, many people are now cooking at home, using healthier ingredients with a gentler impact on the environment. \n\nThe pandemic also raised awareness about the importance of boosting the immune system and fighting inflammation with foods and supplements – a key theme in today's newest food trends. \n\nWith options ranging from taking vitamins like C and D to more exotic options such as cannabis and postbiotics, here are seven of the newest ways to eat well and stay well for the coming year – and beyond.\n\n### Postbiotics\n\n[Probiotics and prebiotics](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/probiotics-and-prebiotics) have gone mainstream in recent years – and now, [postbiotics](https://draxe.com/nutrition/postbiotics/) are having their turn in the spotlight. All these terms relate to the care and feeding of the gut biome. That's the home of probiotics - beneficial bacteria and yeast that support healthy digestion. \n\nPrebiotics are substances that feed the body's colonies of probiotics, and you can get them in supplements or natural sources such as oats, bananas and garlic. It's also possible to add more of these friendly bacteria from supplement and food sources such as yogurt. \n\nNow, scientific interest is turning to postbiotics – the metabolites, or waste, produced by the gut's probiotics as they break down food. Research reveals that these substances can have significant health benefits of their own. Postbiotics contain various enzymes and proteins that appear to play a role in reducing inflammation and improving healthy gut functioning. \n\nThere aren't many postbiotic supplements on the market, but natural food advocates expect to see more, and soon. In the meantime, many natural supplements, such as apple cider vinegar, spirulina, and fermented aloe, can help boost the production of postbiotics in the gut.\n\n[Dr. Marvin S. Hausman](https://microdose.buzz/pilz-biosciences-advances-research-mandate/), leading researcher on the gut microbiome and autism, says, \"I believe the microbiome is a misunderstood system and plays a very important role in inflammation and chronic disease development.\"\n\nBelow Dr. Hausman lists four things you can do to maintain and improve a healthy gut microbiome:\n\n- Take probiotics daily. We have 100 trillion bacterial cells in our body, compared to 30 trillion human cells, so we are controlled by the bacteria in our body. While there is no official recommendation on the minimum dosage, many are now recommending people take up to 50 billion probiotics per capsule.\n- Take prebiotics daily - they are a source of food for the healthy bacteria in our body.\n- Ensure your diet is high in fiber - eating foods high in fiber, such as mushrooms, will benefit your microbiome and improve your gut health because they allow healthy bacteria to thrive.\n- Reduce stress. The bacteria in your body respond to stress and release inflammatory cytokines that can lead to chronic disease development; Examples: irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease, colitis, etc.\n\n\n### Microgreens\n\nRegular \"greens,\" such as broccoli and carrots, have well-known nutritional benefits, but their tiny, young shoots may be up to 40 percent more nutritious than the mature versions. \n\nMicrogreens such as arugula and spinach were once used mainly as garnishes in restaurant dishes, but as awareness grows about their health benefits, they're also coming to a grocery store near you.\n\nMicrogreen enthusiasts also note that these baby veggies [are easily home-grown](https://themicrogardener.com/easy-guide-to-growing-microgreens/), even in small spaces. They can be harvested in just one to three weeks, leaving room to start a new crop right away.\n \n### Kelp- the New Kale\n\nKale was the health food darling, loved for its versatility and many nutrients including essential Vitamin K, folate, and other vitamins. But now, kale has a nutrient-rich rival from the sea. \n\n[Kelp](https://www.healthline.com/health/food-nutrition/benefits-of-kelp), a form of seaweed, is the new kelp. It's mega-packed with vitamins, minerals, and trace elements absorbed from the marine environment.\n\nKelp is also one of nature's best sources of iodine, an essential nutrient for thyroid health. It's so rich in iodine that health experts warn against eating too much because it could damage the thyroid.\n\nKelp has long been a staple of Asian diets, but it's becoming more widely available worldwide. Enjoy dried, seasoned kelp for a crunchy snack, or add fresh kelp to soups, noodles, and many other dishes.\n\n### Eating For the Environment\n\nAlong with overall healthier food choices, more people now consider the environmental impact of their food. \"Green\" eating is a part of a larger movement toward sustainability that impacts buying decisions for everything from cars to clothing.\n\nThe trend toward [enviro-friendly eating](https://www.eatright.org/health/lifestyle/culture-and-traditions/sustainable-eating#:~:text=Sustainable%20agriculture%20enables%20us%20to,our%20environment%20and%20our%20bodies.) includes more plant-based options for everything from tuna to burgers. It also includes an increased interest in buying locally-produced fruits, vegetables, and other foods in season. This is in lieu of imported products that leave a large carbon footprint.\n \nThese trends also go hand in hand with the rising interest in local and home gardens and the consumer demand for tasty, healthy alternatives to high-fat meats and dairy products.\n\n### Natural Immune Support\n\nCOVID-19 boosted growing interest in the benefits of supporting the immune system, and that interest in [natural immunity boosters](https://www.goodrx.com/blog/foods-and-supplements-to-boost-the-immune-system/) is likely to continue in 2021 and beyond. \n\nRecent research shows that taking your vitamins, especially C and D, can improve your resistance to a long list of diseases, including current trending viruses. Other [immune boosters](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/supporting-the-immune-system-during-cold-and-flu-season-with-plant-based-supplements) include an array of minerals, herbs, and spices such as zinc, echinacea, elderberry, and astralagus.\n\nAlthough many of these natural supplements have been available for years, they're now combined in novel ways to appeal to new consumers. Vitamin-infused waters and juice drinks offer convenient and tasty ways to get a variety of nutrients at once. \n\nMultiple vitamins and minerals are now paired with natural substances like [cannabis](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/5-killer-stress-busting-combos-popular-cannabis-strains-paired-with-vitamins-and-herbs), fruits and vegetables into gummies, lozenges or flavored powders. And turmeric, the trendiest of immune boosters, now appears in cereals, health drinks, and protein bars, along with ginger, black pepper, and other immune-boosting kitchen staples.\n\n### Cannabis\n\nCannabis is legal in some form in most US states, and industry watchers expect even more movement toward legalization in 2021 and beyond. Research continues to reveal more health benefits derived from consuming cannabis and its numerous compounds, including its cannabinoids and terpenes. As the numbers of people using cannabis increases it's become evident that they're looking for [new ways to incorporate it](https://www.preparedfoods.com/articles/124669-top-cannabis-food-and-beverage-trends-for-2021/) into their lives-whether it be an edible, tincture, gel cap or more.\n\nThe well-known cannabinoid compound cannabidiol, or CBD, has become a favorite additive to everything from gummies to CBD water – and new uses for this soothing, non-intoxicating compound are being discovered every day. Cannabis advocates expect FDA approval for CBD as a safe additive to foods of all kinds in the near future.\n\nCBD and its psychoactive cousin THC are the best-known cannabis compounds in the world. But the cannabis plant contains more than a hundred others, and now they're having a turn in the spotlight too. \"Secondary\" cannabinoids such as cannabigerol (CBG), cannabinol (CBN) and tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) are growing in popularity as researchers discover more of their health benefits.\n\nCannabis is also rich in terpenes, resins which give different strains their flavor and smell – and these substances also have their own health benefits. Expect to see more terpene isolates such as limonene and beta-caryophyllene available as isolates that can be added to a variety of foods and topical products.\n\n### Chickpeas – the New Cauliflower\n\nIn recent years, cauliflower has been the go-to vegetable for advocates of the keto diet and anyone looking for alternatives to carbohydrate-rich foods like rice, potatoes, and bread. \nBut now, the humble [chickpea](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/chickpeas-nutrition-benefits#:~:text=As%20a%20rich%20source%20of,in%20vegetarian%20and%20vegan%20diets.) is overtaking cauliflower as the vegetable of choice for a variety of low-carb recipes. \n\nMany people know chickpeas (also called garbanzo beans) from popular dishes such as falafel and hummus. But chickpeas can be mashed, chopped, and roasted as a meat substitute, and chickpea flour is also available for low-carb baking.\n\nThese high fiber beans also contain considerable amounts of iron, folate, and trace minerals such as copper and manganese. They have nearly all the essential amino acids except for methionine. Eating chickpeas regularly can also help to control blood sugar and promote insulin regulation.\n\nThe pandemic year of 2020 accelerated some popular health trends and gave rise to entirely new ones. This living collection of beneficial flora is called the skin microbiome, and it's an essential part of the body's defenses. \n\nThe skin biome is a relatively recent discovery, and scientists are still working to understand its secrets. But research is now revealing that cannabinoid compounds such as CBD can play a significant role in keeping our skin flora healthy, thanks to the many cannabinoid receptors found in the tissues of the skin.\n\n### Inside the Skin Microbiome\n\nHuman cells make up just 43 percent of the total cell count in the human body. The rest consists of microbes. They [form multiple biomes](https://www.theguardian.com/news/2018/mar/26/the-human-microbiome-why-our-microbes-could-be-key-to-our-health), or colonies of hundreds or thousands of different strains of bacteria, viruses, fungi and strange organisms called archaea. \n\nThe best known and most thoroughly researched microbiomes is the gut biome, a complex colony of bacterial strains that process food for nutrients, maintain healthy digestion, and support the immune system. Other biomes exist on our bodies. These include the mouth and vagina, and they're now studied for their effects on human health.\n\n\nRecently, the skin microbiome has captured researchers' attention in fields as diverse as neurobiology and cosmetics. That's because [the skin is the body's first defense](https://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-23996/your-skin-microbiome-why-its-essential-for-a-healthy-glow.html) against external assaults such as toxins, allergens, wounds, and infectious agents such as hostile bacteria and viruses. \n\nWe now know overexposure to sunlight can damage the skin's protective microbiome. Sun exposure can cause wrinkles, keratosis, and even the dangerous skin cancer melanoma.\n\nThe skin's microbiome [shares some features of the gut microbiome](https://goop.com/wellness/health/the-good-skin-healthy-gut-guide-to-probiotics/), suggesting a relationship that has profound implications for immune system functioning and mood regulation. \n\nFor example, stress can cause digestive distress and also skin breakouts, and so can responses to some allergens and toxins. Likewise, improving the diet and avoiding certain triggering foods can also improve skin health. Researchers have also uncovered relationships between mood, skin health, and obesity.\n\nThe skin microbiome is more than skin-deep, too. Its beneficial bacteria and other organisms are also found in the skin's deeper layers, down to the subcutaneous fat layer that protects the muscles and bones. \n\nLike other biomes, the skin microbiome has multiple functions. Along with protecting the skin itself from invaders, a healthy skin biome also contributes to cell turnover, supports immune responses, and reduces inflammation. \n\nBut this important biome can also be compromised by factors such as stress, illness, poor diet, and lack of sleep. Dehydration can also affect the skin biome, causing the skin to dry out and reducing the amount of sebum, or oil, that some strains of skin bacteria need to survive. \n\n### Keeping the Skin Microbiome Healthy\n\nUnder many circumstances, the state of someone's skin is a window into the state of their overall health. And many skin conditions such as psoriasis, acne, and eczema can be improved or worsened by other factors that affect general health.\n\nIn general, keeping the skin's multifaceted microbiome healthy is no different than taking steps to promote overall health. A high-quality diet that includes plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits, and healthy oils such as olive oil and avocados can nourish the skin. \n\nDrinking plenty of water can also help keep the skin hydrated and promote sebum production, so that the skin looks plump and soft. Sleep can also support the skin microbiome and prevent \"bags\" and dark circles under the eyes.\n\nNew knowledge about the workings of the skin microbiome has also fueled the production of several skin product lines that use recent research to guide the development of serums, creams, and other treatments for smoother, softer skin.\n\nBut recent research also reveals that cannabis compounds such as CBD can also promote a healthy skin biome because they work with the body's system of cannabinoid receptors – the endocannabinoid system.\n\n### The Endocannabinoid System Supports the Skin Microbiome\n\nThe endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a network of cell receptors that respond to cannabinoid compounds. These compounds called endocannabinoids, are naturally produced by the body. But these receptors can also be activated by cannabinoids from outside sources, mainly compounds found in the cannabis plant. \n\nThe endocannabinoid system plays a major role in maintaining homeostasis, or balance, among the body's many subsystems. It supports many processes related to regulating mood, supporting the immune system, and protecting cell health. Cannabinoid receptors are found in tissues throughout the body – and they occur abundantly in the skin.\n\nJust as the endocannabinoid system as a whole helps to support homeostasis in the body as a whole, the skin's system of endocannabinoid receptors [work to keep the skin's microbiome and tissues healthy](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6429381/) and free of inflammation. \n\nWhen this system, which some researchers have called the \"cutaneous cannabinoid system,\" doesn't function properly, skin disorders such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis can develop or flare-up. Healthy habits such as exercise and plenty of sleep can help the body to produce its own cannabinoids. But, you can give the ECS, and the skin microbiome, a boost with cannabis and a variety of cannabis-infused skin products.\n\n### How to Support the Skin With Cannabinoids\n\nThe endocannabinoid system supports immune functioning and helps to reduce inflammation throughout the body. Consuming cannabinoid compounds such as cannabidiol, or CBD, in any form can help to reduce inflammation and irritation on the skin. For example, cannabis oils, tinctures, and edibles can [reduce the redness and swelling of psoriasis and eczema](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabinoids-cbd-thc-and-cbg-may-relieve-psoriasis-symptoms), and research shows that [CBD can be an effective treatment for acne](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/can-cannabis-help-fight-acne).\n\nBut many new skincare lines are offering [topical products](https://www.wellandgood.com/cannabis-skin-care-cbd-anti-inflammatory-beauty-products/) that contain CBD isolates or full-spectrum cannabis oil, which contains all the compounds and terpenes found in the cannabis marijuana plant. Many CBD-infused products are derived from hemp, a variant of the cannabis plant that 0.03% of THC (delta 9 tetrahydrocannabiniol) or less.\n\nThese cannabis-enriched skincare products include serums, creams, lotions, and even CBD-infused lip balm. \nThey [help balance the skin's microbiome](https://www.hyperbiotics.com/blogs/recent-articles/inside-look-hemp-extract-and-the-microbiome) and activate endocannabinoid receptors in the skin's upper layers to reduce inflammation and irritation from unhealthy bacteria collected in pores and hair follicles. \n\nIf you'd like to give cannabis-infused skin products a try, look for products with all-natural ingredients and no harmful chemicals, and make sure that cannabis or CBD is high on the ingredient list. \n\nThe skin is the body's first line of defense, and the many inhabitants of the skin microbiome work hard to keep it healthy. Now, a large and growing list of cannabis-based cosmetics and skin treatments can boost the power of the biome and keep skin looking its best.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.492537313432836,"src":"/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/ee604/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.png","srcSet":"/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/69585/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.png 200w,\n/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/497c6/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.png 400w,\n/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/ee604/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.png 800w,\n/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/f3583/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.png 1200w,\n/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/49ccb/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.png 1426w","srcWebp":"/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/58556/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/61e93/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.webp 200w,\n/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/1f5c5/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.webp 400w,\n/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/58556/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.webp 800w,\n/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/99238/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.webp 1200w,\n/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/68892/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.webp 1426w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3174-markdown","title":"7 Natural Ways to Boost Your Energy During Winter","slug":"7-natural-ways-to-boost-your-energy-during-winter","content":"Bears and other animals hibernate through the winter, waking when springtime brings sunshine and warmer days. However, humans don't have that option – and the short days and long cold nights can cause us to feel lethargic and unmotivated. If the wintertime blues are getting you down, we give you seven natural ways to boost your energy levels while waiting for the sunshine to return and warmer weather.\n\n### Why Does Winter Sap Our Energy?\nWintertime [tiredness and overall lack of energy](https://www.stack.com/a/the-scientific-reasons-you-feel-more-tired-during-winter-and-how-to-combat-it#:~:text=Winter%20is%20a%20dark%20time,in%20sleep%20patterns%20and%20mood.%22) can affect anyone, but it's more common in the northern hemisphere, where the shorter days of winter also go along with overcast skies, cold temperatures, and snow. \n\nFor many people, the effects of winter are debilitating and may cause depression and the onset of a condition known as Seasonal Affective Disorder. But even for those who don't suffer from SAD, [winter conditions can trigger changes in our biorhythms and metabolism](https://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-25235/5-reasons-youre-tired-all-the-time-how-to-get-more-energy.html)that affect mood, energy levels, and overall health.\n\nSunlight plays an important role in human biology. It triggers changes in skin cells to produce Vitamin D, and it also affects the activity of the brain's pineal gland. This tiny gland uses the \"feel good\" hormone serotonin to produce melatonin, regulating cycles of sleep and waking. \n\nWhen days are shorter and darker, the pineal gland produces more melatonin, which can cause daytime sleepiness and a feeling of fatigue. Higher melatonin levels also mean less serotonin, which can cause sadness, lack of motivation and anxiety.\n\nSunlight is the body's major vitamin D source, an essential vitamin that plays a key role in bone health, blood pressure, and immune function. Recent research reveals that Vitamin D also supports a positive mood. But the farther north people live, the lower their Vitamin D levels because they don't get enough sun exposure. \n\nLikewise, this crucial nutrient levels can drop significantly in the winter, when there's less daylight, skies are overcast, and people are less likely to get outside.\n\nExercise generates energy and elevates mood, but it can be harder to get moving in harsh winter weather. People tend to be more sedentary during the cold months, which can contribute to low-grade fatigue and lack of enthusiasm. The wintertime blues are a natural response to seasonal changes – and a variety of safe and natural remedies are here to help.\n\n### Drink More Water\nOne of the easiest ways to [get a quick energy boost](https://www.cnet.com/health/7-ways-drinking-more-water-can-make-you-healthier/#:~:text=1.,sluggish%20and%20off%20your%20game.) is to drink more water. Although dehydration is often associated with hot summer temperatures, staying hydrated during the winter is important too. \n\nCold outdoor air can dry out the throat and nasal passages, aas well as the hot dry air from indoor heaters. Drinking more water can boost alertness and energy levels, and help to keep joints and membranes lubricated. Drinking plenty of water can also protect the skin from cracking and help the body resist colds and flu. \n\nTip: Try flavored sparkling waters or add a twist of lemon to your morning glass to keep it interesting.\n\n### Cold Water Therapy\nAlthough winter's cold temperatures may leave you craving warmth, a cold shower – or a quick cold rinse after your hot shower – can boost energy and concentration. The brief shock of a cold (below 70F) water starts the metabolism and releases endorphins, powerful hormones that cause positive, optimistic feelings. [Some research also shows](https://www.healthline.com/health/cold-shower-benefits) that taking a cold shower two or three times a week can also improve symptoms of depression.\n\n\"Cold therapy\" holds promise for positive benefits with both the immune and sympathetic nervous system. The Dutch athlete and cold therapy advocate Wim Hof, also known as the 'Ice Man', has been studied for his endurance and overall immunity. During his cold training he has enabled himself to control his heart rate, breathing, and blood circulation.\n\nA 2014 study injected Wim Hof Method practitioners with an endotoxin meant to attack the immune system. The results indicated an overall control of the sympathetic nervous system and immune response - in other words, the participants did not get sick. A further 2018 study showed that the Wim Hof Method of cold therapy and breathing activated regions in the brain responsible for pain suppression.\n\nTip: Take a regular hot shower and for the last two minutes blast the cold water - you will feel it less and still get the same benefits.\n\n### Consuming Cannabis\n\nCannabis is known for its relaxing and calming properties, but [many strains](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/top-5-marijuana-strains-to-fight-fatigue)\nprovide a much-needed energy boost. Stimulating sativa-dominant cannabis strains can improve concentration, focus, and energy, whether you consume them by smoking, vaping, or as slower-acting edibles. Here are a few to try:\n\n[Jack Herer](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/jack-herer) is a high-energy sativa strain with hefty amounts of THC, the psychotropic ingredient that causes a euphoric high. It's known to stimulate creativity and elevate mood, and it can also help people with anxiety, PTSD, and migraine. \n\n[Harlequin](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/harlequin) is a high-CBD strain, although it contains THC, and it can be useful in treating anxiety. \nHarlequin's effects are relaxing and calming, but this cannabis strain also boosts focus and alertness so that users can feel more energetic without the distracting effects of THC.\n\n[Green Crack](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/green-crack) is a high-energy sativa strain that can contain up to 24 percent THC. It supports creativity and productivity, and it can help relieve stress, fatigue and depression, and other conditions such as ADHD and migraines. \n\nTip: If you're new to cannabis, start with a high CBD strain like Harlequin and start slowly.\n\n\n### Laugh More\n\nLaughter might be the best medicine for winter's down days. Years after author Norman Cousins described using laughter to help him recover from a painful spine condition; researchers are documenting the many effects of laughter for fighting fatigue and boosting immune functioning. [Some studies indicate](https://www.webmd.com/balance/features/give-your-body-boost-with-laughter#1) that laughing can raise the heart rate, feed more oxygen to the brain and tissues, which is similar to the effects of exercise. Natural (not forced) laughter can also contribute to better sleep and raise immune cells' levels in the body. \n\nAccording to [SCL Health](https://www.sclhealth.org/blog/2019/06/the-real-health-benefits-of-smiling-and-laughing/#:~:text=Release%20the%20Endorphins!,the%20serotonin%20is%20an%20antidepressant.), \"When you smile, your brain releases tiny molecules called neuropeptides to help fight off stress. Then other neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins come into play too. The endorphins act as a mild pain reliever, whereas the serotonin is an antidepressant.\" Proactively smiling and laughing in an authentic way can help get you out of your funk!\n\nTo get more laughter into your life, take time to watch a comedy movie or a favorite TV comedy. Or consider listening to one of the many new (and free) [comedy podcasts](https://www.vulture.com/article/best-comedy-podcasts-2020.html) while you're doing daily chores.\n\nTip: Looking for a good comedy? Try Hulu's vampire mockumentary [What We Do In The Shadows](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/What_We_Do_in_the_Shadows_(TV_series)).\n\n### Start the Day With Meditation\n\nA morning meditation practice can help to relieve anxiety and low-level depression and set the tone for a calmer, more centered day. Meditation can be as simple as sitting quietly for a few minutes, observing your breathing and thoughts, but a variety of [apps such as Headspace and Calm](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-meditation-apps/) can provide more support, with guided meditations, intentions, and other information and activities for starting and keeping a daily meditation routine.\n\nTip: Don't pressure yourself. Start meditation for two minutes when you wake up with deep breathing and work up to ten or twenty minutes.\n\n### Take Vitamin D\nVitamin D may be the ultra supplement hero of 2020. Vitamin D is called the \"sunshine vitamin\" for a good reason, and taking a D supplement [can help boost energy and concentration](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/best-supplements-for-energy#TOC_TITLE_HDR_4) during dark winter days. It is also known to lower inflammation levels, and is a suggested vitamin to take during the COVID pandemic.\n\nAim for a quality supplement that supplies about 1,000 to 2,000 mg of Vitamin D3 daily. These essential fatty acids have multiple benefits for the heart, eyes, and other organs, but they can also help to fight fatigue and depression. Consider taking a high-quality supplement if your diet doesn't include [plenty of natural sources](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/17-health-benefits-of-omega-3) such as olive or flaxseed oil, fish, and nuts.\n\nTip: Eat foods high in Omega 3 such as salmon, sardines, herring, and oysters. Flax seeds, chia seeds, and walnuts are also good sources. \n\nLike other animals, humans are bound to the cycles of the sun, and it's natural to feel the effects of the short days and cold nights of winter. But a few simple strategies that work with the body's own rhythms can help to beat those wintertime blues.\n\n### Get Your Medical Document & Purchase Medical Cannabis\nIt's easy to get your medical document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://hellomd.ca/get-started). Social distancing. Working and learning from home. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has changed just about every aspect of our lives. \n\nMany people around the world are relying more and more on technology to get work done and stay connected with friends and family, but [studies suggest](https://www.open.edu/openlearn/health-sports-psychology/mental-health/managing-stress-and-anxiety-the-digital-age-the-dark-side-technology)\nthat increased use of computers, smartphones, and other digital tech in these pandemic times may be harmful to the health of both body and mind.\n\nAs the pandemic drags on, and we’re spending more time online than ever, health professionals are [sounding the alarm](https://www.open.edu/openlearn/health-sports-psychology/mental-health/how-manage-the-digital-related-stress-technology?in_menu=747442) about the effects of “tech stress.” \nHere’s a look at five ways to reduce the stresses\ncaused by too much tech. The goal; keep yourself from Zoom-ing your way to ill health in these uncertain times.\n\n### What’s Tech Stress and What Can We Do About It?\n\nProfessionals, from psychologists to productivity experts, have been talking for years about the [effects of too much screen time](https://interestingengineering.com/can-technology-cause-anxiety-and-depression)\non mental and physical health. But the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have supercharged those effects since people everywhere have been forced to turn to digital devices to accomplish things that, not too long ago, would have been done in person. \n\nThe result? Longer hours sitting in front of computer screens, a greater sense of isolation, and growing anxiety about the state of the world. \n\nThe idea of “tech stress” isn’t new, but for [author Erik Peper](https://goop.com/wellness/health/how-to-relieve-tech-stress/), it takes on new urgency in the era of COVID. \n\n“From an evolutionary perspective, we are designed to alternate sitting, walking, sitting, activities, et cetera. Now we only sit, and it compromises our health,” he says. [Technology is largely responsible](https://businessinnovatorsradio.com/erik-peper-phd-launches-new-book-techstress-how-technology-is-hijacking-our-lives-strategies-for-coping-and-pragmatic-ergonomics/) for the amount of time we spend sitting, either at a computer for work, or streaming video and scrolling through social media posts on a smartphone for fun. And it also affects our brains, effectively wiring them in new ways.\n\nSome research has shown that spending too much time online affects the ability to focus and concentrate. The “always-on” nature of the Internet and social media can be so stimulating that real life seems boring and dull by comparison. \n\nAnd in a physical sense, [blue light from computer screens](https://www.bettervisionguide.com/blue-light-eye-damage/) can stress the eyes and even affect circadian rhythms that govern normal sleep and waking cycles. That’s why people who spend time on smartphones or computers just before bed often have disrupted sleep or have trouble falling asleep.\n\nSocial media, too, [has been shown](https://www.mcleanhospital.org/essential/it-or-not-social-medias-affecting-your-mental-health) to contribute to anxiety and depression. Social media use has risen among most demographic groups during the pandemic, allowing people to stay connected with family, friends, and colleagues. \n\nBut psychologists caution that spending too much time on social media can cause negative comparisons with other people and FOMO, or fear of missing out. FOMO causes anxiety when you view or read about the fantastic adventures and experiences other people are having, and you’re not. Some research indicates that people can feel more isolated, not less, when they spend a lot of time on social media sites.\n\n### Working at Home Can Cause More Stress\nA [recent survey](https://www.cnbc.com/2020/07/28/remote-work-burnout-is-growing-as-coronavirus-pandemic-stretches-on.html) reveals that 69 percent of people forced to work at home due to coronavirus restrictions were experiencing symptoms of burnout, stress, and anxiety. \n\n[Working from home](https://www.verywellmind.com/the-stress-of-working-from-home-4141174) offers definite benefits, including a flexible schedule, no commute, and the option of working in comfy clothes. But as people struggle to balance work and home life and spend longer hours at the computer than ever before, they’re sleeping less, worrying more. This puts mental and physical health at risk.\n\nWorking from home can blur the distinction between work and home life. Without a regular schedule and rituals to signal a shift from work to home, many of today’s new telecommuters find themselves in work mode all the time. You may be answering emails, finishing projects, and conducting Zoom meetings at all hours instead of taking a break for relaxation and time with friends or family. \n\nHomeworkers struggle with distractions and a lack of a dedicated workspace. Sitting at a desk or table all day causes muscle stiffness and circulation problems, and staring at screens late at night strains the eyes and disturbs sleep. Homeworkers worry about finances, productivity, and a lack of free time while keeping up with daily tasks and helping children with online learning. \n\nToo much sitting and computer time can affect our health in many ways, but there’s a long list of things you can do to change that. \n\nHere are five ways to tame the tech stress in your life.\n\n### Move More \n\nErik Peper points out that when people sit too long at a computer, their muscles tense and stiffen, and they slump, which makes it hard to breathe properly. \n\nPay attention to your posture – sit up straight, with feet flat on the floor. Take movement breaks to stretch, walk, or even do a quick 10 to 15 minute workout throughout your day. \n\nIt’s estimated that all you need is [11 minutes of exercise](https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/02/well/move/exercise-sitting-longevity.html) to offset a day spent sitting. Consider walking out into nature, too – that can help ground you in the real world and break the hold of technology for a few minutes. Moving the legs activates the “second heart” – the leg muscles that help to pump blood back to the heart.\n\n### Set Limits Around Technology. \n\nSome wellness experts recommend putting strict limits on the time you spend using technologies like smartphones. Turn off your phone and exit screens at least half an hour before bedtime. Set specific times for checking email and returning calls and messages, and consider leaving your phone in another room or turning it off before going to bed.\n\nEstablish a regular quitting time for work, and make a special effort to do things that aren’t computer-related. Activities involving movement and the hands, such as cooking, playing a sport or musical instrument, or crafts, can help rebalance the entire body.\n\n### Take Time to Breathe \n\nLong hours at the computer, especially if you’re slumping or slouching, can compress the diaphragm, so that your breathing becomes shallow. \n\nSet a reminder to stop and take a few deep breaths throughout the workday and work in clothing that’s loose around the waist. A [simple breathing practice](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/the-health-benefits-of-breathwork-for-the-body-and-mind) can be meditative and help to reduce anxiety.\n\n### Try Blue Light Blockers for Sleep\n\nYou don’t need a prescription for computer glasses that filter out harsh blue light from computer screens. Consider adding a screen filter to your computer and setting phone and tablet screens to night mode after dark to reduce blue light effects on sleep. And when you’re working, take frequent breaks to rest your eyes. Look into the distance and be sure to blink several times. \n\n### Consider Cannabis\n \nThe many compounds in cannabis, [especially cannabidiol, or CBD](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/diy-recipe:-our-stress-busting-cbd-infused-green-smoothie), can help to quell anxiety and promote relaxation. \n\nTry a CBD tincture or oil, or a few cannabis edibles to calm down after work. Or smoke a relaxing cannabis strain to transition out of work and into “home time” away from devices and the workday's tensions.\n\nFrom Zoom meetings to virtual school, today’s digital technologies help keep life moving during the pandemic, but they come with risks. Give the Gift of a [Yoga Practice](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-and-yoga-a-match-made-in-heaven)\n\nSince the start of the pandemic, in-person yoga classes have been a thing of the past. Online yoga classes with a teacher who gets to know you. \n\nIt may not be the same as going to the yoga studio, but some yoga teachers, like [Nat Kendall](https://www.natkendall.com/), have the ability to create connections, busting down the Zoom barrier and create community.\n\nNat is a recording artist (he gets a good chant on in every class) and a devoted student of yoga. Give the Gift of Microdosing: One-on-One Personal Coaching\n\n[Microdosing](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/microdosing) is all the rage for both cannabis and [psychedelics](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/psychedelics). It's the practice of consuming small amounts of a substance in a \"[sub-therapeutic, or sub-threshold](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/microdosing-a-better-way-to-take-cannabis), amounts so low that they wouldn’t produce the whole-body effect of a full dose, but high enough that a cellular response could be observed.\"\n\nNumerous health benefits come from microdosing cannabis or psychedelics. These benefits vary based on the substance. For <u>cannabis</u>, microdosing may help with **chronic pain**, **anxiety**, and **sleep**. With <u>psychedelics</u>, people have anecdotally reported that it helps **alleviate depression** and **anxiety** and may increase the feeling of **focus** and **creativity**. But, if you're new to either, how do you get started? \n\n[We think a personal coach](https://www.bliss-theory.com/) is a good entry point and a safe way to explore unchartered territory.\n\nAt different times, Pamela Hadfield, co-founder of HelloMD, [transformed her physical and mental health](https://www.bliss-theory.com/blog/tales-of-a-suburban-mom-microdosing-cannabis-for-my-migraines-and-then-lsd-for-depression) microdosing cannabis and then psychedelics. The Bliss Theory coaching philosophy is based on transformational thinking principles and step-by-step personalized guidance on microdosing cannabis and/or psychedelics. \n\n![4.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/4_dc1721882f.png)\nChani's best-seller \"You Were Born for This\"\n\n### 3. You can go onto Chani's site and [input the birthdate details of the person](https://chart.chaninicholas.com/) you want to gift-give, and it pulls up all the relevant information for that specific chart. \n\nIn her book, \"Chani shows how your birth chart -- a snapshot of the sky at the moment you took your first breath -- reveals your unique talents, challenges, and opportunities.\" Fun! \n\n![Hello2-min (24).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello2_min_24_79fb54d716.png)\n\n### 4. And this year, we have COVID-19 added into the mix.\n\nAs we move into colder, darker days, staying healthy is a must. The good news: you can give your immune system an extra advantage with today's hottest health trend: [wellness shots](https://lcrhealth.com/wellness-shots-juice/). Sipping these tiny, tasty \"shots\" of nutrient-rich juices, spices, and herbs will give you immune-boosting vitamins and herbs. Added to your daily wellness routine, it's a powerhouse immunity boost.\n\nCommercially prepared wellness shots can cost more than $4 (and we've seen them cost as much as $8) for a two-ounce bottle. But you can make a big batch of your favorite wellness shots at home for a fraction of that price using healthy, natural ingredients that you may already have in your kitchen. \n\nWhat's more, you can power up your wellness shots with immune-boosting additives like high-quality CBD. Below is a guide to making your CBD-infused wellness shots by mixing and matching popular ingredients from your supermarket or natural food store.\n\n### What's a Wellness Shot?\n\nWellness shots are taking the health and fitness world by storm. They're very small, highly concentrated concoctions made from an array of nutrient-rich ingredients, and they're [widely praised by fitness and wellness advocates](https://minimalistbaker.com/lemon-ginger-turmeric-wellness-shots/) for their ability to deliver a potent brew of vital vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, without racking up a lot of extra calories.\n\nThe current wellness shot craze builds on the popularity of an old wellness staple, nutrient \"shots\" made from wheatgrass, and a few other ingredients added for taste. Now, though, wellness shots come in all kinds of flavors and nutrient combinations, although most of them are built around a core set of ingredients that includes apple cider vinegar, turmeric, and pepper. \n\nWellness shots sound healthy, [but are they](https://wexnermedical.osu.edu/blog/are-wellness-shots-effective#:~:text=Wellness%20shots%20are%20typically%20small,cider%20vinegar%2C%20turmeric%20and%20ginger.&text=Ginger%20can%20help%20reduce%20nausea%20and%20bloating%20of%20the%20stomach.)? Some nutrition experts say that wellness shots are too small to make a considerable contribution to your overall daily nutrient intake, but they can pack a more powerful nutritional punch, more than an equivalent glass of fortified juice. \n\nA wellness shot can have significantly fewer calories than that glass of juice, too, but these little drinks aren't calorie free – and depending on ingredients, some two-ounce wellness shots can contain over one hundred calories a 2 ounce serving!\n\nOther wellness experts point out that an extra boost of vitamins and minerals is never a bad idea, especially during times of stress. Wellness shots aren't a substitute for a healthy diet that's rich in fruits, vegetables, and healthy oils, but they are usually made with these and other ingredients that have documented health properties, so they can add nutrients that you might otherwise be missing. \n\n### How to Build Your Best Wellness Shot\n\nTo make your own wellness shots, you'll need a few basics and a willingness to try different combinations of fruits, veggies, and spices. \n\nWe think a juicer works best to blend your ingredients because it immediately produces a pulp-free drink, but you can also use a blender and strain the resulting mixture to eliminate pulp and other materials. Other useful tools include a grater and pepper grinder.\n\n### Start With the Essentials\n\nWellness shots can taste sweet, spicy, or tart – or any combination of these. But just about all of them [are built around three nutrient-rich, natural ingredients](https://greatist.com/eat/recipe/diy-wellness-shots):\n\n### 1. Apple Cider Vinegar\n\nApple cider vinegar, or ACV, has been a home remedy staple for years, and now it's one of the stars of the modern wellness movement. ACV is made from fermented apples that have been further treated with friendly bacteria to create acetic acid, the ingredient that seems to be responsible for its [health benefits](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/6-proven-health-benefits-of-apple-cider-vinegar). \n\nACV contains potassium and some amino acids and antioxidants, and research suggests it can help balance blood sugar levels and lower cholesterol. ACV may also help the skin by destroying surface bacteria and balancing skin pH.\n\n### 2. Turmeric\n\n![1.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/1_2ea3c2f52b.png)\n\nTurmeric, especially its main active ingredient curcumin, has plenty of [documented health benefits](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/top-10-evidence-based-health-benefits-of-turmeric). This golden spice is a natural anti-inflammatory that can be as effective as some prescription medications, and it can boost the activity of natural antioxidants.\n\nAlong with those benefits, turmeric can boost heart health and elevate levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, a chemical that supports memory and cognition. That's why some research suggests turmeric can help delay or reverse dementia and other kinds of memory loss. Turmeric may also play a key role in preventing or slowing the development of certain cancers. \n\nTurmeric is a potent natural healer on its own, but black pepper can boost curcumin absorption by 2000 percent!\n\n### 3. Black or Cayenne Pepper\n\nPepper has been called the king of spices, and with good reason. Ordinary black pepper has a [long list of health benefits](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/black-pepper-benefits). \n\nIt's rich in piperine, a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound that appears to improve brain function, help balance blood sugar, support digestive health, and even fight cancer. Piperine is the ingredient that boosts the body's absorption of curcumin.\n\nCayenne pepper is another pepper variety with [plenty of health benefits](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/8-benefits-of-cayenne-pepper). It's rich in capsaicin, a compound that boosts metabolism, improves digestive health, and may even lower the risk of some cancers. Capsaicin is also a powerful pain reliever often found in topical ointments and balms for sore muscles and joints.\n\n### Add Fresh Vegetables or Fruits\n\nTo build your wellness shot, start with fresh fruits or vegetables – or a combination of these – to suit your taste. Create a tangy, citrusy shot with Vitamin C-rich lemons or oranges, or blend with cranberries, blueberries, or other vitamin-rich fruits. Adding fruits will deliver a huge shot of immune-boosting terpenes, like the essential oil limonene, from lemons.\n\nBlend pineapples or apples with turmeric or apple cider vinegar, or combine antioxidant-rich spinach or celery with lemon and green apples for a green shot base. Try sweeter veggies like beets and carrots for plenty of Vitamin C and A. \n\n### Experiment With Herbs and Spices\n\nBoost the health benefits of your homemade wellness shots with a variety of immune-boosting herbs and spices that can blend well with fruits, veggies, and the Big Three of ACV, turmeric and pepper. Grate fresh ginger into your wellness blend for digestive health and cold relief, or add immune-boosting cinnamon to a sweeter shot. \n\nAdd a little honey or maple syrup to taste if you like, but avoid artificial sweeteners and plain sugar.\n\n### Consider Adding CBD\n\nCBD, or cannabidiol, can [add an extra boost](https://emilykylenutrition.com/ginger-turmeric-shots-infused-with-cbd/)\nto the benefits of your DIY wellness shots. This compound, which is derived from hemp or marijuana, works with the body's natural system of cannabinoid receptors to balance the body's many subsystems, [support the immune system](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/supporting-the-immune-system-during-cold-and-flu-season-with-plant-based-supplements) and regulate mood.\n\n[![2.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/2_bd57cde0ab.png)](https://www.curednutrition.com/)\n\nAdd a few drops of high-quality CBD oil or a balanced ratio of THC to CBD from a tincture. Add this to any wellness shot recipe to [support your immune system](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/can-cannabis-fight-superbugs-and-keep-you-healthy), relieve anxiety, and promote overall wellness. If you choose to add a tincture with THC, mind your dosage!\n\nIndividual responses to CBD and THC can vary, so start small and gradually increase the amount you add until you reach the desired effects. Look for pure tinctures and concentrates without added ingredients from quality retailers and brands.\n\n### Our Signature\n\n\nThis DIY recipe will make 4 shots. For the holidays, I'm making this wellness shot and leaving it on several neighbor's doorsteps in a cute mason jar with a holiday note.\n\n### Ingredients\n\n- 1/2 a ripe pineapple\n- 2 small lemons\n- 1/4 cup chopped, peeled fresh tumeric (much tastier than the ground spice!)\n- 1/4 cup chopped fresh ginger\n- a pinch of cayenne (or to your taste)\n- 2 full droppers of CBD tincture\n- 4 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (I like the [Bragg](https://www.amazon.com/Bragg-Organic-Apple-Cider-Vinegar/dp/B001I7MVG0) brand)\n- 5 tablespoons of raw, local, organic honey\n\nBlend or juice all ingredients together. Strain out pulp and other solids.
