Coronaviruses are responsible for many of the colds and flu that make the rounds every year. \n\nCOVID-19 is a relative of another virus that caused widespread illness a few years ago, called SARS – an acronym for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. That's why it has the official name of SARS-CoV2. And the illness it causes is called COVID-19, for Coronavirus Disease 2019.\n\nIn the early days of the pandemic, scientists believed that COVID-19 was mainly a respiratory disease. But now, research has shown that SARS-CoV2 affects processes that control many different systems throughout the body. \n\nThis information helps explain why it can damage the heart, lungs, and other organs and why it can also cause circulation problems, brain fog, and a loss of taste and smell.  These symptoms all arise from the virus's interaction with a single protein on many cells' surface – the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, better known as ACE2.\n\n### ACE2: the Gateway to COVID-19\n\nACE2 is an enzyme [that plays a major role](https://theconversation.com/what-is-the-ace2-receptor-how-is-it-connected-to-coronavirus-and-why-might-it-be-key-to-treating-covid-19-the-experts-explain-136928) in the health of the cardiovascular system and lungs. It's formed from a chain of activity in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, which plays a crucial role in regulating the body's blood volume and vascular resistance. \n\nThese factors [work together](https://www.cvphysiology.com/Blood%20Pressure/BP01) to influence the heart's pumping output and pressure in blood vessels throughout the body. That's why many people with hypertension and other circulatory problems take medications known as [ACE2 inhibitors](https://www.cebm.net/covid-19/angiotensin-converting-enzyme-ace-inhibitors-and-angiotensin-receptor-blockers-in-covid-19/), which may offer some protection against COVID-19 infection. \n\nBut ACE2 is also the entry point for SARS-CoV2, which takes over receptors on the surface of ACE2 cells.  ACE2 cells are found in many parts of the body, but they're especially abundant in the lungs and small intestine, which accounts for the many respiratory and digestive symptoms of COVID-19. \n\nThey're also common in the vascular endothelium, a cell layer that lines the arteries and veins' walls. That helps to account for the many cardiovascular symptoms associated with COVID-19.\n\n### COVID and the Endocannbinoid System\n\nSARS-CoV2 enters the body by way of the ACE2 receptor cells, but it's helped along by a protein on the surface of ACE2 called [transmembrane serine protease 2, or TMPRSS2](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7359420/). This protein enables the virus to enter ACE2 cells and bind to their cell membranes so that the virus can increase within the lungs, cardiovascular system, and other organs.  This process is the target of many studies on the treatment and prevention of COVID-19.\n\nNew research by scientists in Israel and the US indicates a [potential connection](https://www.preprints.org/manuscript/202004.0315/v1) between the activity of these proteins and the endocannabinoid system, a large network of cell receptors that respond both to cannabinoid chemicals produced by the body and compounds in the cannabis plant. That connection explains why cannabidiol, or CBD, and other cannabis compounds and terpenes may have the potential to treat symptoms of COVID-19.\n\n### The Endocannabinoid System: A Key to Fighting COVID-19?\n\nThe endocannabinoid system plays a crucial role in maintaining homeostasis or balance, among the body's many subsystems. Endocannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2 are found in the brain, central nervous system, and many other tissues and organs.  \n\nThey respond to the expression of natural cannabinoids 2AG and anandamide to support immune function, healthy cell development, and much more. And because they respond in similar ways to cannabis compounds, some researchers think that [cannabis could play a major role](https://jcannabisresearch.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s42238-020-00030-4) in the fight against COVID-19.\n\n### Cannabis Could Prevent COVID-19 Infection\n\nA Canadian study found that CBD extracts appear to \"downregulate\" or slow the activity of TMPRSS2. This is the protein that helps the novel Coronavirus enter ACE2 cells. In that way, CBD could prevent SARS-CoV2 proteins from infecting cells at all. Researchers speculate that this discovery could point to the development of simple CBD-based preventatives such as a mouthwash or throat rinse.\n\n### Cannabis Might Fight the Cytokine Storm\n\nCannabis also has [anti-inflammatory and immune-supporting properties](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/the-powerful-anti-inflammatory-effects-of-cannabis), and some research suggests that it could play an essential role in fighting one of the most serious complications of COVID-19 – the [cytokine storm](https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fimmu.2020.01446/full).\n\nCytokines are proteins released by the immune system in response to an infection or inflammation. Generally, that's essential for healing. But in some situations, the immune system goes into overdrive, releasing a flood of cytokines into the bloodstream too quickly. Along with attacking the virus, these cytokines attack the body's cells and tissues, causing more inflammation and potentially shutting down the kidneys, liver, and other organs.\n\nBut recent research from Israel suggests that cannabis might inhibit cytokines' production, which could reduce the intensity of the immune response without the side effects of strong immunosuppressant medications. Terpenes can [boost the effects of cannabis compounds](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/terpene-and-cannabinoid-combos-that-boost-cannabiss-effects). Scientists from Tel Aviv University and the private sector found that a combination of CBD and terpene extracts could be as effective as dexamethasone, a steroid currently used to treat severe COVID-19 symptoms.\n\n### Conflicting Evidence Clouds Outcomes\n\nAlthough a number of studies suggest cannabis can have considerable benefits for treating COVID-19, some scientists caution that this research is limited and preliminary – and [there are also indications](https://www.forbes.com/sites/emilyearlenbaugh/2020/08/11/cannabis-shows-potential-to-help-and-harm-in-coronavirus-cases-experts-explain-why/?sh=5a97525633ea) that cannabis could be harmful to COVID-19 patients, especially when smoked.\n\nInhaling heated smoke of any kind can cause inflammation in the lungs and respiratory system cells, making them more vulnerable to infection with SARS-CoV2.  Several studies have noted that in general smokers with COVID-19 are more prone to respiratory complications than non-smokers, including people who smoke cannabis.   Likewise, some researchers suggest that vaping could also increase the risk of more severe respiratory symptoms of COVID-19.\n\nResearch on the benefits of cannabis for COVID-19 is still in the early stages. But recent studies suggest that this ancient remedy could be a powerful weapon against a very new disease.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.4705882352941178,"src":"/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/ee604/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.png","srcSet":"/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/69585/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.png 200w,\n/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/497c6/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.png 400w,\n/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/ee604/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.png 800w,\n/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/f3583/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.png 1200w,\n/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/5707d/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.png 1600w,\n/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/7620c/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.png 2054w","srcWebp":"/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/58556/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/61e93/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.webp 200w,\n/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/1f5c5/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.webp 400w,\n/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/58556/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.webp 800w,\n/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/99238/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.webp 1200w,\n/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/7c22d/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.webp 1600w,\n/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/83639/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.webp 2054w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3131-markdown","title":"5 Killer Stress-Busting Combos - Popular Cannabis Strains Paired with Vitamins and Herbs","slug":"5-killer-stress-busting-combos-popular-cannabis-strains-paired-with-vitamins-and-herbs","content":"According to the American Psychological Association’s [2020 Stress in America Survey]( https://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/stress/2020/sia-mental-health-crisis.pdf), the US is in the midst of a national mental health crisis.  From an intractable pandemic to economic uncertainty and political turmoil, a long list of unprecedented events is adding new stressors to an already stressed-out world.   \n\nTo cope with a near-constant barrage of stressors large and small, mental health professionals and wellness advocates [recommend a variety of strategies](https://www.helpguide.org/articles/stress/stress-symptoms-signs-and-causes.htm#:~:text=Causes%20of%20stress,on%20you%20can%20be%20stressful.) including exercise, meditation, better sleep and a healthy diet.  Severe stress, anxiety and depression can also be helped with medications that calm anxiety and boost the uptake of the brain’s natural “feel good” chemicals serotonin and dopamine.  \n\nBut a growing body of research suggests that [cannabis can relieve stress and anxiety](https://www.healthline.com/health/marijuana-and-anxiety)\nwithout the side effects of many medications – and pairing it with stress-relieving supplements like valerian and kava kava might amplify its stress-busting powers. Below we list 5 stress-busting killer combos of popular cannabis strains paired with vitamins and herbs.\n\n### 5 Popular Marijuana Strains Combined with Herbs & Vitamins \n\nAlong with cannabis, a number of [herbs and vitamins](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/vitamins-for-stress)\ncontain ingredients that can help to relieve symptoms of stress, and [many of these supplements](https://takecareof.com/articles/best-vitamins-supplements-for-stress-and-anxiety) can be combined with cannabis for an extra boost of calming chemicals during stressful times.  Here’s a list of five cannabis and supplement combinations that can calm stress and relieve anxiety. Mix and match them as you like, since there are no known negative interactions between cannabis and any of these natural substances.\n\n### 1. ACDC and Kava Kava\n\nACDC is a very high CBD strain that has virtually no THC. It’s evenly balanced between indica and sativa, and it’s often used to “take the edge off” experiences that can cause stress or anxiety.  Kava Kava derives from the root of the Kava (piper methysticum) plant and contains kavalactone, a substance that interferes with the breakdown of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), a chemical that calms activity in the central nervous system and promotes feelings of relaxation and comfort. \n\n### 2. Grandaddy Purple and Rhodolia\n\n[Grandaddy Purple]( https://www.hellomd.com/strains/granddaddy-purple) promotes a relaxed, happy feeling along with relieving insomnia and pain.  This high-indica strain is regularly used for easing the symptoms of stress and anxiety. It can be paired with rhodolia (rhodolia rosea), an herb whose roots work as an [adaptogen](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/adaptogens-what-are-they-and-how-to-combine-them-with-cbd) – a substance that boosts the body’s natural responses to \\stress. Wellness advocates say that rhodolia can also help with insomnia, chronic fatigue and stress-related burnout.\n\n### 3. OG Kush and Melatonin\n\nThe venerable [OG Kush](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/og-kush) ranks among the best cannabis strains for stress relief.  This high-THC strain causes relaxation and an uplifting euphoria, and it may also help with insomnia, anxiety and migraines.  Melatonin is a hormone made naturally in the pineal gland, and it’s typically released after dark to prepare the body for sleep.  But melatonin may also relieve symptoms of stress. A recent study found that melatonin could reduce stress and anxiety before surgery as well as the prescription sedative midazolam.\n\n\n### 4. Girl Scout Cookies and Valerian\n\n[Girl Scout Cookies](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/gsc) is a potent indica dominant hybrid strain that may relieve stress, reduce pain and combat symptoms of depression. Valerian (from the root of the Valeriana officinalis plant)  has been called “nature’s Valium” for its ability to reduce stress and anxiety, and it also supports sleep.  Research indicates that, like Kava Kava, it helps to inhibit the breakdown of GABA in the brain.  Valerian also contains compounds that seem to inhibit excessive activity in the amygdala, a part of the brain associated with fear and other strong emotional responses.\n\n\n### 5. Jack Herer and B-Complex Vitamins\n\n[Jack Herer](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/jack-herer) is a classic combination of indica and sativa strains that’s known for its ability to boost concentration and focus, but users also say it helps to reduce stress and symptoms of anxiety.  B-Complex vitamins include the full range of 8 B vitamins, which are essential for transforming food into energy and keeping the brain and heart healthy. But B vitamins can also lower levels of homocysteine, an amino acid associated with stress that also plays a role in the development of blood clots and artery damage. \n\n### Understanding Stress\n\nStress is often described as the natural “fight or flight” response to a perceived threat of some kind.  It’s a protective response that keeps us energized, alert and aware of our surroundings during a crisis, a dangerous situation – or even an exciting, pleasant event like getting married or moving to a new city. The stress response can also help people rise to meet challenges like making a speech, playing a competitive game or studying for a difficult exam. \n\nWhen the brain perceives a threat or recognizes a new challenge, the nervous system releases excitatory hormones including adrenaline (epinephrine), norepinephrine and cortisol. These hormones act on multiple systems throughout the body to prepare it for meeting the threat. The heart beats faster, pumping blood to the muscles, blood pressure rises, and sensory systems become hyper-acute.  \n\nUnder normal circumstances, once the stressful event is past, stress levels would decrease and the body would relax and return to a more normal state. But in this modern world, especially one affected by the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic and multiple other crises, the body’s stress responses may remain in high gear virtually all the time.  When stress responses are always “on,” the flood of excitatory hormones can disrupt health in a variety of ways.\n\nChronic stress can exacerbate existing health problems or create new ones such as insomnia, weight loss or gain, digestive problems and “brain fog” or trouble with concentration and memory.  High stress levels can accelerate the aging process and raise the risk of heart attack or stroke. Stress can also contribute to mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression.\n\nA variety of self-care options can help to reduce stress, such as exercising more or trying relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation.  Prescription medications such as Prozac, Xanax or Celexa can also help to manage symptoms of stress and anxiety.  \n\nBut some research indicates that the relaxing properties of cannabis or cannabis compounds combined with calming [herbal and vitamin supplements](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/5-natural-supplements-to-boost-your-mental-health) can offer relief for many people struggling with chronic stress.\n\n### Cannabis Relieves Stress and Anxiety\n\nOne reason for the enduring popularity of cannabis is its calming, relaxing and lightly euphoric effect.   Compounds in the cannabis sativa plant, mainly cannabidiol (CBD) and delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, act on the brain’s neurological pathways to promote the expression of mood-boosting chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine and the body’s natural calming cannabinoid anandamide.  \n\nA [recent study](https://www.healtheuropa.eu/cannabis-combats-stress/93193/) from Washington State University found that inhaling cannabis could lower stress levels. That’s a key change from previous studies, which used cannabis in pill form in a laboratory setting, rather than exploring the effects of cannabis as it’s normally consumed.   \n\nIn this study, researchers found that the largest reduction in stress came from 10 or more puffs of cannabis strains high in both CBD and THC, while just two puffs of any kind of cannabis could reduce symptoms of anxiety.\n\nIt’s important to note that for some people, cannabis can also cause feelings of paranoia and anxiety, particularly when it’s high in THC, the chemical responsible for the euphoric high.  But the Washington State study provides solid scientific support for the stress relieving benefits of [certain kinds of cannabis](https://topscannabis.com/6-of-the-best-weed-strains-for-stress-anxiety/).\n\n\nStress affects just about everyone, although in very different ways. But the “killer combo” of the most relaxing cannabis strains and supplements can give stressed-out people a new and natural way to cope.\n\n\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.492537313432836,"src":"/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/ee604/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.png","srcSet":"/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/69585/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.png 200w,\n/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/497c6/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.png 400w,\n/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/ee604/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.png 800w,\n/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/f3583/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.png 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/58556/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/61e93/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.webp 200w,\n/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/1f5c5/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.webp 400w,\n/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/58556/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.webp 800w,\n/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/99238/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3130-markdown","title":"5 Natural Supplements to Boost Your Mental Health","slug":"5-natural-supplements-to-boost-your-mental-health","content":"Anyone who has ever struggled with a mental disorder such as anxiety or depression knows mental health is not a perfect state of mind, but rather a constant state of mindfulness. Mental Health requires regular maintenance, monitoring, and responsiveness to changes. As part of a body that needs exercise, sleep and fuel, our mind will tell us when it needs something, if we listen. \n\nIf your mind is speaking to you, especially during the stressful times of COVID-19, maybe you’re feeling unmotivated, overwhelmed or anxious—there are ways to treat yourself, or add to your therapy or conventional medications. Here are a few of Nature’s best supplements for mental health:\n\n### Vitamin D\n\nSunshine is a mood-brightener on the eyes--and on the skin, it turns out, as UV must penetrate skin to trigger Vitamin D synthesis in the body. It turns out you need Vitamin D to absorb calcium, and a growing number of psychiatrists and physicians are prescribing it to help with symptoms of depression. \n\nAccording to the [CDC,](https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/databriefs/db59.pdf) roughly one-third of women in the U.S. are at risk of Vitamin D deficiency or inadequacy. Levels of 30-50 ng/mL of blood seem to be what health professionals are currently targeting, and 800-2000 or more international units (UIs) of vitamin D are the typical daily dose. \n\nLow levels of vitamin D are caused by sunscreen prohibiting UV penetration, and by spending workdays indoors as the rays needed to make vitamin don’t travel through glass. Living in northern climates does not affect D levels, according to the [Institute of Medicine, Food and Nutrition](https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/VitaminD-HealthProfessional/#en1). Ask for a vitamin D test at your next checkup to assess your level.\n\n### Fish or Flaxseed Oil (Omega-3s)\n\nMore than a decade ago, scientists studying human longevity began to discover an inverse correlation between fish consumption and depression. Since then, Omega-3s have become the alpha supplement for heart and health. The body cannot synthesize Omega-3 fatty acids itself, so we must consume them. And, if you’re a vegetarian or don’t consume fish three times a week, you probably need this supplement.\n\nOmega-3s’ mental health properties are said to come from their ability to readily absorb into the central nervous system and facilitate your mood-regulating neurotransmitters, dopamine and serotonin. Fish Oil supplements contain eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which aids in the release of serotonin, as well as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which supports your brain’s pathways, according to the [Oakland Research Institute.](https://www.fasebj.org/doi/pdf/10.1096/fj.14-268342?sid=1d83fd38-22b8-4149-9fb0-e74d3640384d) \n\nFor vegetarians, Flaxseed Oil is a great alternative and is the richest source of a third, health-giving omega-3, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Studies indicate omega-3 supplements will at the very least do no harm, and are widely recommended. \n\n### CBD\nWith medical marijuana legalized in the majority of US states, and a growing body of research confirming the efficacy of cannabis compound cannabidiol [CBD, HelloMD’s](https://hellomd.com/blogs/articles/how-cbd-can-help-with-mood-disorders) Dr. Richard Kim confirms that CBD strongly supports the production of mood-boosting neurotransmitters. This is especially the case for serotonin, which new studies confirm may be as effective as prescription medications for mood disorders. \n\nAs a supplement to support mental health, CBD acts on the nervous system’s own complex network of cannabinoid receptors, as well as the brain’s serotonin pathways, to regulate mood. There are a thousands of different strains of CBD, many with no THC content—which is the psychoactive that causes “high” or euphoric feelings associated with marijuana. \n\nOne study from 2018 published in the Journal of Affective Disorders found that [cannabis low in THC and high in CBD seemed to reduce depression symptoms,](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0165032718303100) while patients reported that high-THC/high-CBD cannabis worked best against stress.\n\nThe best place to find what works for you is to [consult with or find a prescribing doctor](www.hellomd.com) for medical CBD. If your state hasn’t legalized medical marijuana, low-dose cannabis shops are popping up everywhere. HelloMD advises experimenting to find the type and amount of CBD for your best balance, as cannabis can affect people in different ways. \n\n### Vitamin B Complex with Folate\n\nVitamin B is actually 8 vitamins. The most well-known being folate, B6, B12, thiamin, riboflavin and niacin. B vitamins are important as they help DNA synthesis and are crucial in neurological function. Vitamin B12 is often recommended to the elderly complaining of issues with impaired cognition, according to [Psychology Today,](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/integrative-mental-health-care/201709/b-vitamins-play-important-roles-in-mental-health-care) which also reports that low levels of folate, niacin and thiamin were associated with [cognitive impairment in general.](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/integrative-mental-health-care/201709/folate-depression-schizophrenia-and-dementia) Low levels of folate and B12 have been found in studies of depressive patients, as well, according to an article in the [Journal of Psychopharmacology.](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15671130)\n\nLook for a supplement with a well-balanced complex of B vitamins, including: Methyl Folate (not Folic Acid, as 40% of women cannot synthesize it), Methylcobalamin as it is a form of B12 that supports brain and nerve tissue, and Pyridoxal 5-Phosphate (P-5-P) as it is a form of B6 that controls the metabolism of amino acids and aids in the production of neurotransmitters including serotonin. \n\n### Melatonin as Needed + a Women’s Multivitamin\n\nThe best thing you can do for your mental health is get your sleep, eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly. While there are unfortunately no supplements for exercise, you can give your body an assist with two other basic needs. \n\nSleep is the panacea of mental health, and lack of it dramatically impairs emotional regulation. In fact, [Harvard Health research](https://www.health.harvard.edu/newsletter_article/sleep-and-mental-health) found sleep problems may be a risk factor for developing an anxiety disorder, and preceded depression 69% of the time. Beyond employing the practices of sleep hygiene, supplementing with Melatonin, the hormone that regulates our sleep-wake cycle, helps insomniacs young and old sleep and can help establish a more regular sleep routine.\n\nA diet for good mental and physical health includes 9 servings of produce, 3 of dairy, 6 of whole grains and 100 grams of protein—every day. If you’re vegetarian, it’s harder to get your proteins. Vegans also miss dairy. Millions more women who eat out a couple nights a week or don’t stick to whole foods have below-adequate micronutrient levels.\n\nMany doctors recommend multivitamins, and research that claims multivitamins do nothing has been recently challenged. The Harvard School of Public Health calls multivitamins your [“nutrition insurance policy,”](https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/multivitamin/) and advises to avoid mega-dose multivitamins. In fact, they say the least expensive options are often just right.\n\nWhen adding supplements to your lifestyle, do so one at a time to get a feel for their individual effects and home in on the best dosage for you. If you have symptoms of severe anxiety or depression, supplements should be discussed with a qualified healthcare provider first.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.408450704225352,"src":"/static/c1404c23220ffc7a296d52aa2999b6db/ee604/470e5dd3a73db83e80f02a676efb052a.png","srcSet":"/static/c1404c23220ffc7a296d52aa2999b6db/69585/470e5dd3a73db83e80f02a676efb052a.png 200w,\n/static/c1404c23220ffc7a296d52aa2999b6db/497c6/470e5dd3a73db83e80f02a676efb052a.png 400w,\n/static/c1404c23220ffc7a296d52aa2999b6db/ee604/470e5dd3a73db83e80f02a676efb052a.png 800w,\n/static/c1404c23220ffc7a296d52aa2999b6db/f3583/470e5dd3a73db83e80f02a676efb052a.png 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/c1404c23220ffc7a296d52aa2999b6db/58556/470e5dd3a73db83e80f02a676efb052a.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/c1404c23220ffc7a296d52aa2999b6db/61e93/470e5dd3a73db83e80f02a676efb052a.webp 200w,\n/static/c1404c23220ffc7a296d52aa2999b6db/1f5c5/470e5dd3a73db83e80f02a676efb052a.webp 400w,\n/static/c1404c23220ffc7a296d52aa2999b6db/58556/470e5dd3a73db83e80f02a676efb052a.webp 800w,\n/static/c1404c23220ffc7a296d52aa2999b6db/99238/470e5dd3a73db83e80f02a676efb052a.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3129-markdown","title":"THCP and CBDP: Two New Cannabinoids Discovered by Scientists","slug":"thcp-and-cbdp-two-new-cannabinoids-discovered-by-scientists","content":"Modern research on cannabis dates back decades, to when Professor Raphael Mechoulam from Israel discovered the first isolate phytocannabinoid, THC, in the early 1960s. This followed the discovery of a long list of isolate compounds ranging to over hundred potential cannabinoids. \n\nOver the years, we discovered that it’s possible to have two versions of the same cannabinoid compounds, as in the case of THCA and THC. The difference between the two is that THC holds its carboxyl acid group, meaning it only exists in raw plants that have not combusted. THCA loses the carboxyl acid upon exposure to high temperature, and it becomes THC.\n\nRecently two more cannabinoids have been discovered within the cannabis plant, showing that the book has yet to close on cannabinoid discovery The first, Tetrahydrocannabiphorol (THCP), imitates the same rough structure as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). \n\nTHC is one of the main compounds in cannabis, which is responsible for the mind-altering psychoactive effects. Though THCP has a similar structure to THC, studies show that THCP is 30 times more powerful than the psychoactive THC.\n\nThe second cannabinoid, identified as cannabidiphorol (CBDP), links to CBD and may have additional benefits as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-convulsant. \n\nFurthermore, it’s does not create heavy psychoactivity, similar to its close cousin CBD. The main difference between these four compounds is that while THCP and CBDP have seven links each in their side-chain, the other two THC and CBD only contain five links.\n\n### What are Cannabinoids?\n\nCannabis strains vary from plant to plant and these differences are due to the chemicals cannabinoids and terpenes. Most people believe that cannabinoids, as well as terpenes, are responsible for the difference in levels of different strains and effects on the body. \n\nThere are more than a hundred [cannabinoids](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5938896/), but researchers believe that only the THC causes the “high” feel linked with the use of marijuana. \n\nThe discovery of two new cannabinoids begs to differ with this claim as one of these compounds is psychoactive, as stated above. This discovery shows that we are just starting to scratch the surface behind the science of marijuana. \n\n### How THCP works?\n\nThe newly discovered cannabinoids could be the answer to the use of specifically targeted properties and aspects of marijuana. It could be possible to grow a strain of cannabis that has THCP as the primarily dominant strain. Therefore, we can derive the compound for creating cannabis-infused products that allow users to enjoy its therapeutic and medical benefits.\n\nAccording to the group of researchers, as they described in their [report in the journal Nature](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-019-56785-1), they isolated the two cannabinoids whereby the THCP can interact with the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system found in the human body.\n\nTypically a cannabinoid needs to have at least three rings for it to bind with CB1; THC has five of these rings. A cannabinoid with more than five rings would connect smoothly with the body's receptors. Eight carbon rings would be an absolute wonder capable of producing a strong biological response. Unfortunately, no such compound was known until THCP, which boasts of seven carbon rings.\n\n### Medical Implications of Discovery\n\nIt’s not yet clear if CBDP holds any extra therapeutic values. On the other hand, THCP could be the next big promise to enter medical cannabis research.\n\nTHC only requires three links to interact with cannabinoid receptors. However, scientists realized that the ability to bind peaks when it’s at eight links, then this ability starts to reduce. THCP is much closer to this peak than any other known cannabinoid.\n\nIf this is the case, the medical benefits of THC can rise tremendously with the addition of THCP. This possible booster could help THC deliver benefits such as relief for pain, nausea, and more.\n\nScientists believe that this discovery can help them understand how different cannabis strains cause diverse effects. They claim that they are not aware of any other naturally occurring phytocannabinoid with such a structure, they hope to use it to understand different results caused by cannabis and to use the same to promote healing and wellness.\n\nWith such a discovery, more and more people can benefit from the therapeutic and medical benefits of marijuana in a higher and more potent dose. It also shows that we still have a lot more to learn about cannabis.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3793103448275863,"src":"/static/1b94d8aeb6e35bcb7ce366d8443a1cb8/6de1f/8e58f3c478a99da955fff73e91798484.png","srcSet":"/static/1b94d8aeb6e35bcb7ce366d8443a1cb8/69585/8e58f3c478a99da955fff73e91798484.png 200w,\n/static/1b94d8aeb6e35bcb7ce366d8443a1cb8/497c6/8e58f3c478a99da955fff73e91798484.png 400w,\n/static/1b94d8aeb6e35bcb7ce366d8443a1cb8/6de1f/8e58f3c478a99da955fff73e91798484.png 778w","srcWebp":"/static/1b94d8aeb6e35bcb7ce366d8443a1cb8/cdd77/8e58f3c478a99da955fff73e91798484.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/1b94d8aeb6e35bcb7ce366d8443a1cb8/61e93/8e58f3c478a99da955fff73e91798484.webp 200w,\n/static/1b94d8aeb6e35bcb7ce366d8443a1cb8/1f5c5/8e58f3c478a99da955fff73e91798484.webp 400w,\n/static/1b94d8aeb6e35bcb7ce366d8443a1cb8/cdd77/8e58f3c478a99da955fff73e91798484.webp 778w","sizes":"(max-width: 778px) 100vw, 778px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3127-markdown","title":"HelloMD Launches Telehealth Service for Medical Cannabis in New York","slug":"hellomd-launches-telehealth-service-for-medical-cannabis-in-new-york","content":"### HelloMD Launches Telehealth Service for Medical Cannabis in New York \n\n\nHelloMD, a digital health platform for non-traditional care, announced its return to the US with a flagship launch in the state of New York. For the last few years, HelloMD has operated its Telehealth business exclusively across Canada. However, since the COVID pandemic, it is clear the Telehealth is the healthcare delivery model of the future. \n\nWe are excited to announce that we have expanded our Telehealth service to the state of New York. People across the state now have unlimited access to experienced healthcare practitioners who can advise them on the use of medical cannabis. New Yorkers can now easily and efficiently use the HelloMD live video platform from the comfort of their home or office.\n\n[GET YOUR NEW YORK MEDICAL CARD](https://newyork.hellomd.com/) \n\n### Why Use Telehealth for Cannabis?\n\nAlong with California and Nevada, New York allows for qualifying Telehealth consultations between patients and doctors, for medical cannabis. Telehealth is particularly important for medical cannabis consultations because it allows for private consultations where:\n\n- Patients feel the stigma of investigating medical marijuana\n- A Primary GP or doctor doesn't feel comfortable prescribing or advising cannabis\n- People are too sick to travel to see a doctor EG: undergoing chemo\n\n### New York's Qualifying Conditions\n\nThe following are qualifying conditions for getting a medical card in the state of New York:\n\n- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)\n- Cancer\n- Chronic pain\n- Damage to the nervous tissue of the spinal cord with an objective neurological indication of intractable spasticity\n- Epilepsy\n- HIV /AIDS\n- Inflammatory bowel disease\n- Huntington's disease \n- Multiple sclerosis\n- Neuropathy\n- Opioid use disorder (only if enrolled in a treatment program pursuant to article 32 of the mental hygiene law.)\n- Opioid replacement\n- Parkinson's disease\n- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)\n\nNew York has recently expanded the list of qualifying conditions to include (among others) chronic pain. The Milky Way is so vast, it's hard even to grasp. Yet, our 5.5-inch-wide brains hold more: 1,000 trillion synapses, connecting 86 billion neurons. No wonder we're so smart! \n\nWhy then do we ever forget things? How can we ever feel \"foggy\" with so much going on in there? These are the questions neuroscientists still don't entirely have answers to—about how our spongy gray matter actually works and what causes failures.\n\nWith Alzheimer's rising at an epidemical rate, research foundations worldwide are applying more funds than ever to find answers. With so many struggling to concentrate and stay focused while working or learning online—and new conditions like the post-Covid-19 [\"brain fog\"](https://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2020/09/25/long-haulers-face-debilitating-chronic-health-issues-following-coronavirus-recovery/) described by Dr. Fauci—health and wellness companies are expanding their brain-supporting technologies, too.\n\n### What Can Nootropics Do for You?\n\nThe modern day nootropics or “smart drugs” booming right now are actually smart supplements that combine plants and/or synthetic compounds to enhance various cognitive functions. The old-school nootropics are typically caffeine and prescription stimulants such as Ritalin and Adderall. \n\nHere, we’ll focus on the former rather than the latter, as most of us are familiar with the life-saving nectar of the coffee tree and amphetamines if the multi-billion-dollar ADHD and illicit market is any indication.  \n\n### Natural Nootropics\n\nThe most buzzed-about natural neuroenhancers right now are mushrooms. Not the magic kind (although psychoactive mushrooms are being fast tracked for FDA-approval for treating depression, anxiety and PTSD, but rather what are called “functional mushrooms.” \n\nSome you will have heard of in your recipe books or the vitamin aisle: \n\n- Lion’s Mane\n- Shiitake\n- Oyster mushrooms\n\nOthers have been used for centuries in their native China, Korea, Japan and Tibet: \n\n- Cordyceps\n- Reishi mushrooms\n\nThe best natural nootropics we have found combine one or more of these powerful mushrooms with psychostimulating herbs. \n\n### Popular Nootropic Mushrooms\n\n[Cordyceps](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/cordyceps-benefits#TOC_TITLE_HDR_4) comes from the weirdest, most remote place but is used in medicines worldwide. A staple in natural pre-workout supplements, it’s a highly effective booster for energy, vitality and endurance. Its remote native land is on the “roof of the world” in the Tibetan high plateau. The weird place it grows? On caterpillars that live there.\n\nThe rare elixir traditionally harvested for royalty ultimately became a major income source due to its rarity and value. Cordyceps gained worldwide attention after the 1993 Olympics when the Chinese Women’s Track and Field team used the supplement and shattered 9 world records. It is a star for many benefits and in nootropics, “helps elevate energy levels naturally via ATP production with increased oxygen utilization,” says The Genius Brand.\n\n[Reishi](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/reishi-mushroom-benefits) is an extra-sexy mushroom in the wellness world because it is an [adaptogen,](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/adaptogens-what-are-they-and-how-to-combine-them-with-cbd) one of few plants that adapts to your body’s needs to help it cope with physical, biological, or chemical stressors. “Adaptogens can affect different tissues and organs, and adjust each of these parts to attain homeostasis,” according to an article published by the [National Institutes of Health.](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6240259/) \n\nMyco Botanicals says Reishi mushrooms support neurological and adrenal functioning* in its Brain Capsules. According to studies cited by Healthline, it also provides strong support for the immune system and inflammation pathways. This is increasingly important during cold, flu and Covid season, as systemic inflammation affects the brain downstream, its immune system and the way it signals. \n\n[Lion’s Mane](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/lions-mane-mushroom) look just like they sound and are the kings of the nootropic mushroom forest. The shaggy-headed super-shrooms are known to help improve focus and boost concentration levels and memory, according to [Nulivscience.](https://nulivscience.com/blog/functional-mushrooms-and-their-benefits) They are also known to help prevent degenerative brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease. \n\nBuddhist monks brewed Lion’s Mane tea to heighten their focus while meditating. Sources say it can help with anxiety and depression, diabetes, preventing cancer, ulcers and heart disease, reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, and stimulating brain cell growth. Before you begin gobbling it up, though, know that you should check levels in your nootropic as it can negatively affect people treating diabetes or already on blood thinners. \n\n### Other Popular Nootropic Herbs\n\nAs with the smart shrooms, some of the brainy herbs are already well known, while some are just popping.\n\nGingko Biloba contains antioxidants galore and thus protects against the effects of age and organ damage, including your brain organ. It is also known to promote blood and oxygen flow in the bloodstream, which your brain loves. Many people take it to improve memory and mental function.\n\nAmerican Ginseng is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory herb, too, and a well-known adaptogenic. Understood to improve mental health and social functioning, Western [studies](https://www.essentialnutrition.com.br/media/artigos/quantum/22.%20Improved%20cognitive%20performance.pdf) have shown it helps with fatigue and improves cognitive and task performance throughout the day. \n\nBecause adaptogens act on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis to tune your physiological functions, they are at the forefront for optimizing brain function, too. Among the elite herbs:\n\nBacopa used in Ayurvedic medicine has neuroprotective effects, according to [research](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22700087/) published by the National Institutes of Health. It is thought to help the brain process faster and help facilitate dendrite growth.\n\nRhodiola contains more than 140 active ingredients, according to [Healthline.](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/rhodiola-rosea) It has been proven to alleviate burnout and exhaustion, reduce mental fatigue and improve work-related task performance by 20%, increase motivation to study and even boost exam scores by 8%, they say. \n\nGotu Kola, or Asiatic Pennywort, is well known in Chinese, Indonesian and Ayurvedic traditions as a brain-power booster. According to [Healthline,](https://www.healthline.com/health/gotu-kola-benefits#cognitive-function) studies proved it enhances memory and nerve function, protects brain cells from toxicity and improves overall cognition.\n\n ### 4 Nootropics to Help You Work Smarter\n\n1. [Rise by Cured Nutrition](https://www.curednutrition.com/product/cured-rise/) boasts a blend of adaptogens (Rhodiola, American Ginseng, Gotu Kola and more), along with Lion’s Mane and Cordyceps mushrooms and a Vitamin B complex—topped with THC-free, hemp-derived CBD to eliminate anxiety and any jitters and crash that can come after using any stimulant. One consumer states, \"This particular nootropic concoction is great for inflammation and reestablishing and unlocks my physical flow. I suffer from autoimmune and Rise helps me move through my day.\"\n\n2. [Brain Capsules by Myco Botanicals](https://hostdefense.com/products/brain-mycobotanicals-mushroom-and-herb-support-for-mental-clarity) support mental clarity with a different blend of herbs (Gingko, Bacopa and Gotu Kola) and pairs Lion’s Mane with Reishi mushrooms instead. They say the complementary plants support and nourish the brain and nervous system to ensure optimal cognitive functioning. \n\n3. [Genius Mushrooms by The Genius Brand](https://thegeniusbrand.com/collections/all-products/products/genius-mushrooms) has all three of the brainy mushrooms described above and has thousands of positive reviews. It boosts natural (ATP) energy production and promotes total brain health and peak functioning by stimulating neurotrophic and nerve growth factors. Genius Joy is another of their nootropics, which leans more on emotional enhancers to support dopamine production and “unclog” the mind. \n\n4. [Basis by Elysium](https://www.elysiumhealth.com/en-us/basis) is an outlier in that it contains none of the above. Yet, it has gained much attention for its revolutionary natural technologies. Created by the director of aging research at MIT, Basis helps optimize cellular health to optimize brain function. It is clinically proven to significantly increase NAD+, a coenzyme (or helper molecule) involved in the body’s energy production and cellular protection processes. And it activates sirtuins, which regulate and manage everything that happens in your cells. Your brain will thank you for it, now and when it’s older. As daily life is disrupted, many kids are not attending school,  and there is instability in our day-to-day routines. Millions of kids are at home attending school on zoom. Children lack necessary social interaction, and increasingly feelings of isolation are common. \n\nDuring COVID, antidepressants and anti-anxiety drug prescriptions have spiked more than 34%. Insomnia drugs have jumped more than 14%. A recent report by [Express Script](https://www.express-scripts.com/corporate/americas-state-of-mind-report) stated, \"This analysis, showing that many Americans are turning to medications for relief, demonstrates the serious impact COVID-19 may be having on our nation's mental health.\"\n\n### CBD for Kids?\nCannabidiol, or CBD, is one of the hottest trends in today's health and wellness market, and it has a long list of documented benefits for both body and mind. Research has shown that this abundant cannabis compound can boost the immune system, reduce anxiety, improve sleep and much more, but most of those studies have focused on CBD effects on adults.  \n\nCan CBD support children's health in the same way? Maybe—but because there hasn't been a lot of research on the effects of CBD on kids and teens, [medical experts urge parents to be cautious](https://childmind.org/article/cbd-what-parents-need-to-know/#:~:text=CBD%20may%20be%20safe%20itself,worsening%20sleep%20problems%20if%20stopped.%E2%80%9D). \n\nHere's what science reveals about whether CBD is safe for children.\n\n### What is CBD?\n\nCBD is [one of more than a hundred compounds](https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/cannabidiol-cbd-what-we-know-and-what-we-dont-2018082414476) found in the cannabis sativa plant and its close cousin, hemp. \n\nUnlike another famous cannabis compound, THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) CBD won't cause anyone to feel high.  But it can support the health of the body's many subsystems, including the endocannabinoid system, a network of natural cannabinoid receptors found in tissues and organs throughout the body.\n\nCBD can be extracted from the resin of both cannabis and hemp plants.  But because the cannabis plant typically contains a considerable amount of THC, CBD extracts from cannabis may have some too – and that can lead to legal restrictions.  But CBD from hemp typically has little or no THC, making it possible to produce and sell it freely almost everywhere in the world.\n\nCBD is available in a variety of forms, including oils, tinctures, and isolate powders. That makes it easy to add CBD to just about anything, from your favorite recipe to a wide range of products such as candies, drinks and personal care items. CBD tinctures can be placed under the tongue for fast action, and salves and creams can be used on the skin, which is rich in endocannabinoid receptors. \n\n### CBD: Mental and Physical Effects\n\nThere's been considerable research conducted on understanding [the many effects of CBD on mental and physical health](https://www.healtheuropa.eu/cbd-understanding-how-cbd-works-with-our-bodies/96718/). The endocannabinoid system is a relatively recent discovery, and scientists are still working to understand all its effects on human health and development, but CBD appears to support the activity of the two main cannabinoid receptors, imaginatively called CB1 and CB2.  CBD may also boost the expression and uptake of neurotransmitters in the brain related to mood and concentration, helping to calm anxiety, promote concentration, and support better sleep.\n\nSome studies also indicate that CBD can affect pain signaling from the body to the brain to relieve the pain in many chronic conditions like arthritis and migraines.  \n\nOther research reveals that it may support the immune system, reduce inflammation, and improve circulation.  These benefits may be true for children and adults, but most significant studies on the benefits of CBD for children have so far been limited to just a few severe health conditions.\n\n### CBD for Children: What We Know\n\nThe most comprehensive studies on CBD for children have focused on [the use of this and other cannabis compounds](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6514832/) to relieve the symptoms of epilepsy – a family of seizure disorders that don't always respond to conventional anti-seizure medications.  \n\nThat research has led to the development of the first cannabis-based epilepsy medication, a synthetic cannabinoid derivative called [Epidiolex](https://www.epidiolex.com/).  This drug can relieve the symptoms of severe childhood seizure disorders such as Dravet Syndrome, which can cause multiple seizures every day.\n\nRecent research in Israel [has also investigated](https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT02956226)  CBD's potential to relieve symptoms of autism spectrum disorder, a complex set of developmental disorders that interfere with communication and social skills.  Autism affects about one in every 54 children in the US, and symptoms can include severe episodes of rage, restlessness, and repetitive motions such as rocking or spinning.  \n\nAlthough study groups were relatively small, these studies revealed that CBD tinctures reduce restlessness, promote better focus, and calm outbursts of anger and fear in a majority of participants between the ages of 5 and 21.\n\nOther studies suggest that CBD might be helpful for children with severe anxiety or depression, but research in these areas is limited and not conclusive. What we do know, is that research indicates that CBD is incredibly effective in [reducing anxiety in adults](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/why-taking-cbd-daily-can-help-reduce-your-anxiety).\n\n### Natural Cannabinoids: From Mother to Child\n\nEndocannabinoids, the body's natural cannabinoid chemicals, can play an important part in a child's development, before and after birth. So far, research has identified two of these cannabis like substances – anandamide and 2-AG (2-arachidonoglycerol). These neurotransmitters bind to cannabinoid receptors throughout the body to support homeostasis, or balance, reduce inflammation, and boost immune functioning. \n\nCompounds in the cannabis plant are so similar to these natural cannabinoid chemicals that they can trigger responses in endocannabinoid receptors, too – and that's why cannabis and cannabis compounds can help to relieve the symptoms of a number of health conditions.\n       \nNow, [research reveals](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2544377/) that the endocannabinoid anandamide acts as a \"messenger\" between the uterus and an embryo as it's being implanted in the uterine wall.  This helps explain why using marijuana during pregnancy could be harmful. THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis, is very similar in structure to anandamide, so it could interfere with this very important early signaling and affect the embryo's survival.  \n\nEndocannabinoids are [also found in human breast milk](https://healthfeedback.org/claimreview/endocannabinoids-in-human-breast-milk-are-important-for-human-development-but-not-present-in-cannabis/), which passes them on to a nursing infant.  Researchers still aren't sure about the effect of these chemicals on infants, but they speculate that they could help boost a child's immune system.\n\nThe fact that natural cannabinoids are shared between mother and child might appear to support CBD's use for treating a variety of childhood health issues. But healthcare professionals caution that although CBD and other cannabis compounds can trigger responses in the endocannabinoid receptors like natural cannabinoids do, [these two types of chemicals aren't identical](https://www.blazetherapeutics.com/post/cannabisdebunkedcannabinoidsbreastmilk) – and it's still unclear what effect an external cannabinoid like CBD might have on a child's developing brain and body.\n\n### Should You Give CBD Products to Kids?\n\n[Healthcare experts stress ](https://www.healthline.com/health/childrens-health/cbd-for-children) because there's so little research on the effects of CBD products for children, it's better to choose caution and avoid them, unless your child's doctor approves. \n\nHowever, if parents choose to try CBD products to relieve conditions like insomnia or anxiety, it's important to keep some essentials in mind:\n- CBD might interact with other medications a child is taking.\n- Not all CBD products are the same. Full spectrum CBD contains all the compounds in cannabis – and that can include some THC. Look for hemp-derived CBD or CBD isolates instead as THC is harmful to the developing brain.\n- CBD products may not always be lab tested for purity and safety.  Read labels to find out whether a product's CBD content has been lab-certified.\n- Various products deliver CBD in different ways. For example, edibles like gummies take longer to deliver CBD than quick-acting tinctures.\n- Most CBD products are designed for adults and may not offer child-size dosing options.\n- Although CBD is generally safe, it can cause side effects like sleepiness or an upset stomach.\n\nCBD has plenty of documented health benefits for adults, but far less is known about their use in children with a few exceptions. Each year, [millions of people contract](https://www.cdc.gov/dotw/common-cold/index.html) these two common viruses, with the average adult getting around 2-3 colds annually. \n\nWe can all recognize the symptoms — runny nose, sore throat, coughing, sneezing, and body aches — as soon they start appearing. With the weather changing, it’s essential to stay in good health and keep our immune system strong. Luckily, there are ways to support your immune system so that you are less susceptible to getting sick. \n\n### Your Immune System\n\nThe immune system is responsible for protecting your body from bacteria, viruses, and other toxins that may enter the body. Though the immune system functions automatically, there are ways we can weaken it or boost its ability to defend us against germs. \n\n- A few ways to boost the immune system are: \n- Eating a nutrient dense diet \n- Committing to a more consistent sleep schedule \n- Staying active with exercise and body movement\n\nStress also plays a significant role in weakening our immunity. When the body is stressed, its ability to fight off pathogens is reduced. Normal levels of day-to-day stress are manageable, but [chronic stress can significantly impact immune function](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4465119/) and can cause headaches, ulcers, and other conditions. \n\nFinding ways to reduce stress in your life is a good place to start, but if you find it difficult, then incorporating plant-based foods and supplements may be useful.  Certain herbs and plants help boost your immunity system by helping your body respond better to stress. These types of substances are called adaptogens. \n\n### What Are Adaptogens?\n\nAdaptogens are a class of herbs and mushrooms that support the body’s physical, chemical, or biological ability to adapt to stress. There are some that you can take as supplements and others you can eat, or that can be brewed to make tea or tinctures. \n\nThese herbs have been consumed by various cultures throughout history to help prevent and fight off illnesses. Studies have shown that adaptogens [offer a stress-protective effect](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3991026/). This aids our central nervous system by encouraging neuroprotective, anti-fatigue, and even antidepressive activity. \n\nAdaptogens also influence [hormone production](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6240259/) and other physiological responses to stress, including energy levels. Similar to adaptogens, cannabis may provide cold and flu relief via immune system modulation system along with other plant medicines like mushrooms\n\n### How Cannabis May Help the Immune System\n\nMany studies have demonstrated cannabis’ potential to support the immune system. Both THC and CBD have been shown to possess [antiviral and antifungal properties](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3165946/). Antiviral substances work by inhibiting the development of target pathogens instead of merely killing them, like antibiotics. \n\nCBD in particular, can help with bacteria that are not responding to medication and studies have even shown CBD can address [antibiotic resistance](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2020/03/200324131833.htm). Cannabis may also have immunosuppressive power. A recent study showed that phytocannabinoids “deeply influence immune functions, thereby regulating inflammation, autoimmunity, antitumor...responses.” \n\nCannabis can also manage [stress and anxiety](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/anxiety). One study found that cannabis may help regulate stress and depression symptoms, which helps improve your immune function. In [another study](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0165032718303100?via%3Dihub), scientists demonstrated that inhaling cannabis can positively impact your body’s stress response. \n\nResearch has revealed that patients inhaling cannabis experienced a notable reduction in their stress symptoms in 89.3% of sessions. The study also found that women perceived a more significant reduction in symptoms of anxiety than men.\n\n### Medicinal Mushrooms Role in Immune Support\n\nMedicinal mushrooms have been used throughout history in traditional and folk medicines to aid in treating many ailments. These non-psychoactive powerhouses have found their place in modern science, as they have shown to improve the body’s immune response. \n\nMushrooms work in the body by [modulating the immune system](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4684115/) to fight against viral, bacterial, and parasitic pathogens. Some of the best mushrooms for boosting your immune system include maitake, cordyceps, shiitake, reishi, turkey tail, and lion’s tail. \n\nThese mushrooms can be included in your diet and eaten off the stem or you can look for products, such as capsules and powders, that contain them. \n\n###  Other Plant-Based Supplement\n\nOther adaptogenic herbs like ashwagandha, Siberian ginseng, rhodiola, and schisandra may also help reduce stress levels and help to [modulate stress responses](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4296439/). There’s also research that shows holy basil or tulsi is an immunomodulating herb that may play an important role in supporting cells involved in immune defense. This herb can be added into recipes when cooking or made into a tea. \n\n\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.4814814814814814,"src":"/static/893c7fe338748069031199ebcdd470f7/ee604/468599726e7903701405b8044b8e9b9b.png","srcSet":"/static/893c7fe338748069031199ebcdd470f7/69585/468599726e7903701405b8044b8e9b9b.png 200w,\n/static/893c7fe338748069031199ebcdd470f7/497c6/468599726e7903701405b8044b8e9b9b.png 400w,\n/static/893c7fe338748069031199ebcdd470f7/ee604/468599726e7903701405b8044b8e9b9b.png 800w,\n/static/893c7fe338748069031199ebcdd470f7/d7d2a/468599726e7903701405b8044b8e9b9b.png 902w","srcWebp":"/static/893c7fe338748069031199ebcdd470f7/58556/468599726e7903701405b8044b8e9b9b.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/893c7fe338748069031199ebcdd470f7/61e93/468599726e7903701405b8044b8e9b9b.webp 200w,\n/static/893c7fe338748069031199ebcdd470f7/1f5c5/468599726e7903701405b8044b8e9b9b.webp 400w,\n/static/893c7fe338748069031199ebcdd470f7/58556/468599726e7903701405b8044b8e9b9b.webp 800w,\n/static/893c7fe338748069031199ebcdd470f7/bcd79/468599726e7903701405b8044b8e9b9b.webp 902w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3118-markdown","title":"6 Hot New Health Trends to Watch","slug":"6-hot-new-health-trends-to-watch","content":"Every year brings new trends promising better looks, better health, and better ways of living – but it's not always easy to separate the safe, science-backed new strategies from those making dubious claims to fantastic results. Here's a look at 6 of 2020's hottest health and wellness trends – and whether their claims for improving the health of mind and body are valid, overblown, or downright dangerous.\n\n### 1. CBD\nCannabidiol, or CBD, is the darling of the health and wellness industry these days.  CBD is a non-psychoactive compound that occurs abundantly in the cannabis Sativa plant and its close relative, hemp. \n\nResearch on the therapeutic applications of cannabis, or \"medical marijuana,\" reveals that [CBD has an array of positive effects](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/317221) on the body's endocannabinoid system, or ECS. The ECS is an extensive network of cell receptors found in the brain, tissues, and most organs. This system responds both to cannabinoid chemicals produced naturally and those from outside sources like cannabis.\n\nMany [independent studies](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3820295/) have shown that CBD can bind with endocannabinoid receptors in many of the body's other subsystems to help regulate immune functioning, reduce inflammation, and promote healing.\n\nIn the brain, it can help to protect neural pathways, modulate pain signaling and stabilize mood.  Because CBD products don't contain psychoactive compounds that make people \"high,\" they can be sold just about anywhere, in forms such as tinctures, edibles, and topicals – salves, lotions and creams. \n\nThe effectiveness of CBD depends mostly on a product's CBD content and consumption. Still, both anecdotal reports and recent research suggest that it can be a safe and effective alternative to some over the counter and prescription medications.\n\n### 2. Mushroom Stacking\n\n\"Magic mushrooms\", or psilocybin, have been on the US's counterculture scene since the 60's and used in ceremonies and religious rites of passage for thousands of years. Clinical trials and [new research](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/johns-hopkins-scientists-give-psychedelics-the-serious-treatment) are showing that psilocybin has the potential to reduce trauma and anxiety. \n\nOther research suggests that microdosing, or taking minimal doses of psychoactive mushrooms or other psychedelic substances, can help boost memory, cognition, and mood.  Some studies suggest that microdosing psychoactive substances can help with severe post-traumatic stress disorder and clinical depression.\n\nNow, the practice of \"mushroom stacking\" is taking the potential of microdosing to another level.  Mushrooms taken in this way are what's known as a [Nootropic](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/nootropics). Simply put, nootropics are one or more substances that have the potential to enhance consciousness and cognition. Nootropic stacking is the term for combining, or stacking, multiple chemicals to boost the effects.  Developed by mycologist Paul Stamets, [mushroom stacking](https://www.nootropedia.com/paul-stamets-epigenetic-neurogenesis-stack/)\ncombines low doses of the psychedelic mushroom, psilocybin, with lions mane mushroom and niacin, also known as Vitamin B3. Although, mushroom stacking can also be done without the psychedelic mushroom.\n\nStamets, claims that this combination [has the potential](https://thethirdwave.co/microdosing-psilocybin-mushrooms-stamets-stack/) to unlock new areas of human cognition. It could be a jump start to understanding plant medicine's effect on the human brain, but we still have much to learn. \n\nStudies have shown, though, that microdosing psilocybin can affect neurological pathways related to the fear response. Lion's mane mushroom appears to protect cognitive functioning and enhance memory.  Niacin [may also boost brain and heart health](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/lions-mane-mushroom).  \n\nTaken together, this \"stack\" of brain-enhancing chemicals may protect neural pathways and boost memory. Remember, psilocybin is a Schedule 1, psychogenic substance. Currently, there's no peer-reviewed research supporting Stamet's \"mushroom stacking\" formula, although it seems promising.\n\n### 3. Intermittent Fasting\n\nMost diets aim to promote weight loss by telling dieters what they should and shouldn't eat. But with [intermittent fasting](https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/intermittent-fasting-surprising-update-2018062914156), the issue isn't what you eat, but when.  In this popular new diet trend, eating is limited to certain times of the day or week – and within those periods, you can eat whatever you want.  \n\nDieters can choose from [several different fasting schedules](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/intermittent-fasting-guide). Popular protocols include 16:8 (16 hours fasting, 8 hours for eating every day), 5:2 (normally eat for 5 days a week and fast or eat very lightly for two non-consecutive days), or 24s – go an entire 24-hour period without food multiple times a week.\n\nThe proponents of intermittent fasting claim that this \"non-diet\" helps burn fat and promote cell regeneration. Intermittent fasting reflects early humans' eating patterns, who didn't have access to three meals a day.  Experts posit that intermittent fasting can boost the body's metabolic rate, increase insulin sensitivity, and boost human growth hormone production, or HGH.  \n\nFasting isn't safe for people with diabetes or certain other conditions, or for pregnant women. Fasting can also interfere with hormones that regulate menstrual cycles. But [available research](https://www.webmd.com/diet/news/20191226/intermittent-fasting-diet-could-boost-your-health#1) suggests that for most people, intermittent fasting is a safe and relatively effective way to lose weight. Then again, so are many other healthy diet plans.\n\n### 4. Fascia Blasting\n\nFascia, also called myofascial tissue, is a continuous layer of connective tissue that covers all the different elements that make up the human body – bones, organs, nerves, and muscles. Fascia encloses the organs and keeps them in place, covers and protects nerves, and gives structure to the body.  \n\nResearch indicates that healthy fascia is typically supple and flexible, but inflammation, trauma, autoimmune reactions, and other circumstances can cause it to become tight and painful. That contributes to conditions such as fibromyalgia, plantar fasciitis, and myofascial pain syndrome.\n\nMany believe that [fascia problems](https://www.healthline.com/health/fascia-blasting#benefits) can lead to poor circulation, muscle pain and weakness, and cellulitis – the bumpy, \"cottage cheese\" look of fat cells under the skin.  Enter the fascia blaster, a long, pronged wand developed by [fitness guru Ashley Black](https://www.ashleyblackguru.com/?gclid=CjwKCAjww5r8BRB6EiwArcckC9u0tvGxYZCNtQTNM0bxNGnuR5rpHyQaeoVHlymG6zIEomlLXlVjdhoCdyAQAvD_BwE).  Massaging [targeted areas of the fascia](https://www.cnn.com/2018/11/08/health/fascia-blasting-explainer-exercise-jampolis/index.html)\n According to Black, the fascia blaster can promote firmer skin, reduce the appearance of cellulite, and promote better blood circulation.\n\nThe only research to date on the fascia blaster's safety and efficacy is a small study done by Ashley Black herself, but some users report better-looking skin and less muscle pain and tightness.  Others, though, say that using a fascia blaster causes bruising, skin discolorations, and pain, even worsening varicose and spider veins.\n\nA number of other fascia blasters are now available, modeled after Ashley Black's original. They come with varying claims for success, but all are tools for massage, and numerous studies have found that massage can help relieve pain and stiffness from a variety of causes.  \n\n### 5. Cold Water Bathing\n\nTaking a cold shower is often recommended as a way to cool passions and calm down – but now, [some research suggests](https://www.healthline.com/health/cold-shower-benefits) that cold water bathing and showering really might be good for health.\n\nA [recent study](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/325725) found that people who take cold showers are 29 percent less likely to call in sick to school or work.  Other research suggests that bathing or showering in cold water (below 70 F) may boost metabolism, improve concentration, and elevate mood in people with depression.  \n\nColdwater has many effects on the body. The heart beats faster, breathing quickens, and blood pressure rises as the body works to maintain a stable temperature.  Cold baths or showers can help people feel more awake and alert, and some say bathing in cold water can improve overall functioning throughout the day.\n\nEven if you don't bathe or shower in cold water, cold water applications can be beneficial. Coldwater can act as a local anesthetic for quick pain relief because it constricts blood vessels and slows the brain's pain signals. Icing an injury can also reduce swelling and redness.\n\nCold baths and showers aren't for everyone, though.  Medical experts warn that people with compromised immune systems or heart conditions might be stressed as the body works to compensate for the drop in temperature. But overall, even a brief burst of cold water during an otherwise warm shower or bath might be a boost to your health.\n\n### 6. Marijuana Instead of Alcohol\n\nFor centuries, people have turned to alcoholic beverages to relax, enjoy time with friends, and drown their sorrows. With nearly [20 million Americans](https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/67/wr/mm6736a2.htm) afflicted by the condition, it's quickly becoming an emerging public health issue. \n\nMany people can relate to the struggle of trying to find balance, especially when it comes to managing the tension between day to day life and the reality of being out of commission. Chronic pain can make daily tasks difficult, participating in the fun activities you used to enjoy and disrupt the entire way you live life. And taking opioids makes the pain worse when used over a long time; it makes sense why it feels so hard to keep things under control. \n\n### What Causes Chronic Pain?\n\nMany different factors cause chronic pain. These may include advanced age, disease, nerve damage, traumatic injury, excess strain on the back, or knees due to weight or improper posture. \n\nOpioids are most often prescribed to help treat chronic pain but often end up causing more harm. Some believe that opioids help build the body's resilience to pain; however it does the exact opposite. \n\nStudies have shown that extended use of pain medication can lead to [opioid-induced hyperalgesia](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21412369/), a condition marked by an increased sensitivity to external stimuli. It can also lead to a spread of pain to non-injured parts of your body beyond the original area and increase the amount of pain you feel over time.\n\nLuckily, several alternative treatments and therapies may aid in regulating the symptoms associated with chronic pain. Simple lifestyle choices easily incorporated into your routine may make living with chronic pain more manageable. Keep reading for a few suggestions that may make a big difference. \n\n### 1. CBD\n\nCBD is a well-known therapeutic cannabinoid from cannabis which has an analgesic effect. Research shows CBD reduces sensations like burning, prickling, tingling, and burning related to [neuropathic pain](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9653176/), often related to inflammation. Pain that's difficult to treat may respond well to CBD. The bonus for many chronic pain patients is that CBD is nonintoxicating. Popular methods of consumption include topical creams, tinctures and gel caps.\n\n### 2. THC\n\nAlthough CBD is a powerful pain reliever, THC within marijuana also plays a role in reducing discomfort as well. THC also has [anti-inflammatory properties](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0304395901004547) that may be particularly useful for pain resulting from tissue damage. It's suggested that a balanced consumption of both CBD and THC increase pain-relieving efficacy. Popular ways of consuming THC are by smoking strains of flower high in THC, vaping cannabis oils, and ingesting edibles. It's often recommended to eat edibles as pain relief may last anywhere from 6-8 hours.\n\n### 3. Natural Supplements\n\nSome studies have shown that things like turmeric, ginger and white willow bark may help reduce pain. Turmeric is a spice with [medicinal properties](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5664031/) and is an excellent anti-inflammatory. Similarly, ginger may also help reduce pain. Interestingly, these spices have been shown to work particularly well together. The medical center at Penn State indicates that [white willow bark](http://pennstatehershey.adam.com/content.aspx?productid=107&pid=33&gid=000281) may be nature's natural aspirin. This bark has been shown to be effective in combatting headaches, arthritis, tendonitis, and bursitis.\n\n### 4. Acupuncture\n\nAcupuncture is the ancient healing art of inserting extremely fine needles into the skin at specific points. Acupuncture is believed to release endorphins, the body's natural pain-killing hormones providing an [analgesic effect](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5676441/). Although it is sometimes considered a controversial treatment option, [studies continue to show](https://www.jpain.org/article/S1526-5900(17)30780-0/fulltext) that acupuncture's effects are measurable and cannot be explained only by placebo effects.\n\n### 5. Meditation\n\nAlthough meditation is often associated with stress management, using deep breathing to calm your mind can also soothe a body that is in pain. Studies have shown that mindfulness meditation can actually bypass the opioid receptors reducing pain intensity. This ability to relieve pain independently of [opioid neurotransmitter](https://www.nccih.nih.gov/research/research-results/mindfulness-meditation-relieves-pain-but-works-differently-than-opioids-in-the-body) mechanisms makes this method an often overlooked secret weapon in combatting pain.  \n\n### 6. Regular Movement and Exercise\n\nPhysical movement and regular exercise plays a significant role in pain reduction. Adding movement into your daily routine helps to lubricate your joints, increase your body's natural fluids, improve mobility, and positively impacts your overall quality life. It's up to you to decide what makes the most sense for your body whether that's a gentle stretch or a vigorous walk. \n\n### 7. Hot or Cold Treatment\n\nDepending on the type of pain experienced, using a hot or cold compress could alleviate different muscle discomfort types. Cold treatments reduce blood flow and are useful for decreasing inflammation, while hot treatments relax muscles promoting blood flow. \n\n### 8. Eating a Healthy Diet\n\nChronic pain is often linked to systemic inflammation throughout the body. This can be alleviated by eating a healthy diet full of unprocessed food, fruits, vegetables and some proteins. According to [Dr. Fred Tabung, of Harvard's T.H. Chan School of Public Health](https://www.health.harvard.edu/pain/can-diet-heal-chronic-pain), \"Your diet can help support your immune system by having it turn on and turn off at the appropriate times,\" he says. \"Yet a poor diet can alter your immune system, so it acts abnormally, and can contribute to persistent low-grade inflammation.\"\n\nDr. Tabung suggests that you aim for variety in foods and avoid eating the same favorites day after day. His recommendations include:\n\nHalf your plate should be filled with whole grains such as brown rice, along with proteins, such as fish, poultry, beans, or nuts.\n\nThe other half should mostly be leafy green vegetables along with some fruit.\n\nConsume healthy oils such as olive and canola oils instead of butter\n\nChronic pain is a physical, emotional, and psychological ordeal that can be managed when employing various methods. Each person is unique when it comes to what may work. For some, incorporating CBD or THC into a medical regimen is enough. For others, it's yoga followed by mediation, or supplements to support a new acupuncture routine. Managing chronic pain is a personal journey but often, there is hope for living a pain-free life. CBD products, why technically psychoactive, will not get you high, but THC products will. THC products also bind to receptors in your brain. CBD products will not bond with the receptors in your brain, and it appears they might inhibit THC products from doing so. \n\n### Methods of Consumption\n\nOnce you decide whether you would like to consume CBD, THC or a combination of both, there are numerous methods of consumption to consider. Other than smoking flower, there are many different ways to consume cannabis. Many athletes prefer edibles as they are easy to ingest and come in a prepackaged dosage. Typically an edible may take 1-2 hours to take effect, whereas a sub-lingual or tincture, take as little as 15-30 minutes. The biggest drawback relates to lung health. The American Lung Association explains certain forms of cannabis can be particularly damaging to your lungs. Smoking marijuana can be especially harmful if it contains irritants, fungus, or mold, which many illicit products do.\n\nSome people think vaping is safer, but it can damage your health in a similar fashion to e-cigarettes. Additionally, many people are surprised to learn that hot dabbing also appears to have drawbacks, as it can contain lung-damaging toxins and pollutants. In this all-natural DIY smoothie we combine ingredients, such as CBD and blueberries, which will help combat stress and leave a sweet taste in your mouth!\n\n### Fight or Flight \n\nYour body is purpose-built to react to threatening situations. For instance, a fast Mac truck comes toward you while walking in a crosswalk; your body will activate your adrenal glands. In turn, the [adrenal gland releases a surge of hormones](https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/stress-management/in-depth/stress/art-20046037), including adrenaline and cortisol. Adrenaline will raise your heart rate and blood pressure while cortisol will lower nonessential thinking - so you're able to get out the situation fast. \n\nOur flight or flight is the ultimate stress-response system. But if we activate it too frequently, it stays in \"on\" mode more or less permanently. Chronic stress will overexpose your body to stress hormones and make you more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and decreased immunity.\n\n### Managing Your Stress\n\nEliminating stress is not always possible, but learning how to manage your stress may positively impact your life and overall health. Understanding what events stress you and how you react are the first steps to improvement. Taking care of yourself and [developing stress management strategies](https://www.webmd.com/balance/stress-management/stress-management) are also critical. Two well-known strategies for fighting stress are to exercise regularly and eating healthy, well-balanced meals.\n\nBelow is our recipe for a stress-busting hemp CBD-infused green smoothie. Not only is it delicious, but it's also a nutrient-dense and healthy meal replacement. Ingredients include antioxidant-rich superfoods chock full of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and the superhero of anxiety relief: CBD.\n\nHere are more details on each ingredient and why they are powerful stress reducers:\n\n### Hemp-Derived CBD\n\nHemp-derived CBD is the one-two stress management punch in our healthy smoothie. CBD is known to address a host of common conditions such as: \n\n- Anxiety\n- Stress\n- Depression\n- Insomnia\n- Pain\n- Inflammation\n- Excema & skin issues\n\n### Cashews\n\nCashews are delicious on their own, but in a smoothie, they add creamy goodness. Packed with iron, B6, and magnesium, a handful of cashews a day boost our mood and quell anxiety. Cashews are also a fantastic source of the amino acid tryptophan. This wonder amino helps with our serotonin's uptake, which helps us to feel our best selves. It also happens to be a precursor to the hormone itself. \n\n### Avocado\n\nB vitamins help our bodies beat back nervous energy and even promote healthier brain cells. B vitamins are known to relieve stress, and avocados are full of them. Avocado is also full of healthy monounsaturated fat and potassium, and in a smoothie, an avocado is an excellent replacement for animal-based milk.  \n\n### Super Greens\n\nSpinach and kale are both rich in magnesium; which is vital for proper growth and maintenance of bones. But magnesium also allows our systems to function properly. [Psychology Today](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/evolutionary-psychiatry/201801/magnesium-depression) says that magnesium is one of the most essential minerals for the body to function properly.\n\n### Blueberries\n\nBerries, in general, are great stress-busters, but blueberries in particular, hold the most antioxidants. Antioxidants are known to memory, sharpen cognition as well as to lower blood pressure. High in vitamin C, blueberries combat stress and lower cortisol levels.\n\n### Pineapple\n\nWith higher levels of Vitamin C, pineapple is another good addition to your smoothie. Other fruits such as kiwi, cantaloupe, or papaya are suitable substitutes for pineapple. They are all packed with immune-boosting properties and will also help to lower cortisol levels. We love pineapple because of the taste, and when mixed with spinach, your smoothie will become a vibrant green hue!\n\n### Lion's Mane Powder\n\nLion's mane mushrooms have been linked to new [growth of brain cells: hericenones and erinacines.](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/lions-mane-mushroom#TOC_TITLE_HDR_2) Studies have found that lion's mane is also a potent anti-inflammatory. In addition, researchers believe it to reduce anxiety and depression by improved functioning of the hippocampus.\n\n### Maca Powder\n\n[A recent study](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18784609) indicated that maca root might reduce anxiety and stress while at the same time increasing libido. People claim that maca also decreases the instances of erectile dysfunction when taken regularly and flavonoids may be why. [A 2015 study](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24931003) also found that maca could reduce symptoms of depression in postmenopausal women.\n\n### Ingredients for Hemp CBD-Infused Green Smoothie\n\n- 1 full dropper of hemp-derived CBD\n\n- 1 handful of unsalted cashews\n\n- 1/2 an avocado\n\n- 1 handful of spinach or kale\n\n- 1 handful of blueberries\n\n- 2 large spears of pineapple\n\n- 1/2 tsp of Lion's Mane powder\n\n- 1/2 tsp Maca root powder\n\n- 1 small container of coconut vanilla yogurt\n\n- 1 handful of ice\n\n### How to Make It\n\nThis is pretty simple. Put all the ingredients in your blender or Nutri Bullet and mix it! If it is too thick, add a little water and mix again. Enjoy!\n\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.5037593984962405,"src":"/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/ee604/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.png","srcSet":"/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/69585/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.png 200w,\n/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/497c6/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.png 400w,\n/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/ee604/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.png 800w,\n/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/f3583/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.png 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/58556/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/61e93/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.webp 200w,\n/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/1f5c5/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.webp 400w,\n/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/58556/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.webp 800w,\n/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/99238/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}}]}},"pageContext":{"limit":12,"skip":48,"numPages":20,"currentPage":5,"id":5084,"name":"CBD","slug":"cbd","country":"US"}},"staticQueryHashes":["3949754563","4179947113","4202924991"]}
