But can cannabinoids — the naturally-occurring chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant — actually fight superbugs and combat the flu? Let's jump into the science. \n\n**What Are Superbugs, Anyway?**\n\nFirst, let's examine superbugs themselves. What are they, and how did they come to be? Superbugs are bacteria that become [resistant to antibiotics prescribed by a doctor](https://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=38448). \n\nAntibiotic resistance is far more common than you think, and, unfortunately, there's nothing you can do to stop it. This is because, in order to survive, bacteria adapt to the drugs designed to kill them, making antibiotics less effective (or completely ineffective!). \n\nSo, if antibiotics can't kill these bacteria, what can?\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link)\n\n**The Case for Cannabis**\n\nJust earlier this year, scientists screened five different cannabis compounds for their antibiotic properties. Surprisingly, one of these compounds, cannabigerol (CBG), [killed MRSA](https://www.theguardian.com/society/2020/jan/19/cannabis-compound-could-be-weapon-in-fight-against-superbugs), one of the most common superbugs found in hospitals.\n\n**Why is this so important?**\n\nEvery year, around 90,000 Americans catch an invasive MRSA infection. Research shows that nearly 20,000 people in the United States die from this infection — and many of these people are children.\n\nIn a separate study, scientists discovered that [CBG cured mice of MRSA infections](https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/833392v3). This result was similar to a drug called Vancomycin, often prescribed as a final measure against drug-resistant microbes. (The ACS Infectious Diseases journal is currently reviewing this study.) \n\nCould cannabis be the medical breakthrough scientists are looking for? And could it kill other superbugs, too?\n\n**Will Doctors Prescribe Cannabis for Superbugs?**\n\nIt's important to note that the compounds CBD and CBG could potentially fight superbugs, and not cannabis itself. CBD and CBG are non-intoxicating compounds from the cannabis plant that don't produce the same high as marijuana can.\n\nThe FDA has already approved CBD for treating some forms of seizure, and you can use CBG legally if it id derived from hemp. Scientists now believe these compounds could fight the superbugs that are common at this time of the year. \n\nIn both of the above studies, researchers looked at how long it took cannabis compounds to kill bacteria — and it was fast. CBG, for example, [acted within around three hours](https://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/news/20190624/cbd-as-a-superbug-antibiotic), three to five hours faster than the drug Vancomycin. Researchers also found that CBG disrupted the biofilm around bacteria — the layer that's hard for regular antibiotics to penetrate.\n\nThis isn't a recent discovery. Cannabis ingredients have shown promise in battling superbugs for more than ten years now, and scientists have known that cannabis contains antibacterial substances for even longer. However, with harder evidence, medical professionals are finally taking cannabis seriously when it comes to antibiotic resistance, and this could have a positive impact on many lives.\n\nWe've already talked about how cannabis could potentially [cure the common cold](https://hellomd.com/blogs/articles/can-cannabis-cure-the-common-cold), but this new research about superbugs is even more encouraging. While cannabis is not a silver bullet, cannabinoids could fight superbugs and keep you healthy in the future. You may be satisfied with your experiences, or perhaps you may think you could have done things a little bit better. For this reason, New Year’s resolutions are popular around the globe as they offer the chance for a fresh start. \n\nOur yearly resolutions help us put a stake in the ground. You may make a list that includes some of the following:\n\n- Lose a few extra pounds\n\n- Commit to being more active\n\n- Call Mom every Saturday\n\n- Remember to look at the glass as half full\n\n- Hand in assignments on time\n\n**Living in the Present**\n\nIt’s only human to want a future that’s brighter than the past, yet when we spend too much time ruminating about what has been or what might come to be, we lose sight of what’s in front of us: the present.\n\nBeing in the moment, is an act of mindfulness. When you are present to what is happening now, it leads to a more profound sense of fulfillment and also makes you happier. According to Dr. Elyssa Barbash Ph.D., practicing mindfulness allows you to tune into your thoughts, emotions, and body sensations. In so doing, it allows you to work with these human factors and communicate how you are thinking and feeling to both yourself and others.” As a writer for Psychology Today, she also says to her patients that, “[depression lives in the past while anxiety lives in the future](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/trauma-and-hope/201801/mindfulness-and-being-present-in-the-moment).” \n\nYet, it’s often hard to live in the present and not have fear for the future or regrets about the past. For this reason, the act of mindfulness is an intentional practice that needs consistent work. One way to cultivate mindfulness is through the attitude of gratitude. With gratitude, we take time to contemplate and express thankfulness for the people, things, and experiences that make life more meaningful. Being mindful while practicing gratitude creates a more positive mental outlook and a sense of fulfillment within your life.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nAccording to [Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence](http://ei.yale.edu/what-is-gratitude/), people who practice gratitude regularly, “experience more joy, love, and enthusiasm, and they enjoy protection from destructive emotions like envy, greed, and bitterness.” Mindfulness and practicing gratitude are a shortcut to health and wellness for the body, mind, and soul.\n\n**5 Ways to Cultivate Mindfulness and Gratitude:**\n\n1. **Meditate and repeat a mantra**.\n Take 5-10 minutes when you wake up to meditate. Meditation is known to reduce stress and anxiety but also helps to increase self-awareness and the ability to be more present. Repeating a mantra that reinforces positive thinking will help you stay focused and out of your head. Repeat the mantra “May all beings everywhere be happy and free” and breathe deeply in and out through your nose slowly.\n\n2. **Take a walk in nature.**\nSimilar to meditating, walking in nature helps to reduce depression and anxiety. It also improves overall immunity as well as memory. A [2013 British study](urlhttps://www.huffpost.com/entry/green-space-meditation-brain-walk-park_n_2964199) found that merely walking in green spaces may put the brain into a state of meditation.\n\n3. **Look on the bright side:** stop criticizing and complaining \nHaving a positive outlook and positive-talk dialogue with yourself is a useful stress management tool, but can also be transformative. For people that tend to be pessimistic, this requires retraining your internal communication. Creating a positive perception of the world around you allows you to reframe even the most negative situation and may allow you to see the positive aspects, such as learning a new life lesson. A 2010 study indicated that people who view life with a half-glass-full perspective also tend to have a better quality of life.\n\n4. **Consume cannabis that invites reflection.**\nSome people find consuming THC creates a sense of euphoria and deepens their ability for self-reflection. For others, it may create a container for deeper contemplation or an increased sense of focus. For many, cannabis can enhance self-introspection and may help lift feelings of depression or anxiety.\n\n5. **List all the people and things for which you are grateful.**\nCreating a list is a straightforward act. Hearing promises of reduced stress, improved energy and more active immune systems, many are starting regimens of adaptogens or CBD. \n\nBut now a new trend is taking off: combining CBD and adaptogens together. Curious if this stress-busting combination is right for you? \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nLet’s explore this new trend, the science behind it and how to start taking CBD and adaptogens yourself. \n\n### What Are Adaptogens?\n\nAdaptogens are plant-based medicines that people primarily take as a way to help the body become more resistant to all kinds of stressors. \n\nChinese and Ayurvedic traditions have used these plants for centuries, but the term adaptogen originated in the 1950s and ‘60s as a way to describe compounds that would increase our resistance to stress. \n\nWhile each adaptogen has slightly different effects, they’re all praised for their ability to reduce the impact that stress has on the body. People turn to them for their ability to keep us grounded and resilient to life’s ups and downs. \n\nResearch on adaptogens, while limited, does support these claims. Studies show that many adaptogens’ effects include combating:\n\n* Anxiety\n* Depression \n* Fatigue \n \nAdaptogens also appear to [increase people’s capacity to work in the midst of stress and fatigue](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3991026/). \n\nThese studies suggest that adaptogens are so effective because of how they regulate homeostasis, ir balance, via the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the sympathoadrenal system—both of which are involved in the body’s stress response. \n\nBut which adaptogens are best for specific needs? \n\nExperts suggest that for long-term stress and related hormone imbalances, the best adaptogens are:\n\n* Ashwagandha\n* Holy basil\n* Asian ginseng \n\nMeanwhile, for acute stress, anxiety and increased energy, you should go for:\n\n* Siberian ginseng\n* Rhodiola\n* Schisandra \n\nAnd if you’re looking to give your immune system a boost, the best adaptogens for you may be:\n\n* Reishi mushrooms\n* Ginseng \n\nFolks usually take adaptogens in the form of supplements or they work them into their diet. You can:\n\n* Drink adaptogen tea\n* Add tinctures into your drinks or food\n* Buy adaptogen powder to mix into all kinds of foods like soups, sauces, dressings and smoothies\n\nAdaptogens are generally considered safe and without major side effects. Still, some research suggests that [there’s potential for otherwise safe herbal supplements, like adaptogens, to interact negatively with other medications](https://time.com/5116664/are-herbal-supplements-safe/). \n\nThese products are still active chemicals and may impact other aspects of your health regimen. So, it’s best to work with a doctor when adding in adaptogens to your wellness plan to ensure it’s the right choice for you. \n\n### Combining CBD & Adaptogens \n\nInterestingly, CBD shares many of the same effects attributed to adaptogens, such as:\n\n* Bringing homeostasis to internal systems\n* Reducing anxiety\n* Easing depression \n* Combating fatigue\n* Boosting the immune system\n\nRELATED: [UNDERSTANDING HOW CBD CAN CALM YOUR ANXIETY](https://hellomd.com/articles/why-taking-cbd-daily-can-help-reduce-your-anxiety/)\n\nResearch shows that CBD can have a big impact on stress resilience. [One 2011 study demonstrated CBD’s effect on stress](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3079847/) by testing subjects’ anxiety (and related factors) during a public speaking stress test. \n\nThe people taking CBD reported significantly reduced anxiety, as well as:\n\n* Less cognitive impairment\n* Reduced discomfort in their speech\n* Increased feelings of anticipatory alertness\n\nThis confirmed earlier studies which had found [similar results for both humans](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20829306) and [animals](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23298518). \n\n[CBD is so helpful, in part, because of how it boosts serotonin signaling](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26711860), much like SSRIs, a common pharmaceutical option for treating anxiety. CBD does this by enhancing the serotonin receptor 5-HT1A, thus relieving anxiety and depression.\n\nSo, both adaptogens and CBD increase our resistance to stress. In fact, you may say that CBD itself is an adaptogen. For this reason, some now believe that combining CBD with other adaptogens may produce synergistic effects, increasing the overall impact of both substances. It makes some sense to pair these. After all, if you’re looking to improve your stress response, why not use both options?\n\nBut skeptics point out that we have little reason to believe that CBD pairs with other adaptogens in a synergistic way. There has been no scientific research on the outcome of such pairings, so we have very little to go on, other than anecdotal accounts from those experimenting with the combination. Still, we also have no reason to think the combination would be particularly harmful—so it may be worth experimenting with this combination for those who haven’t found relief from other options. \n\n### Tips for Taking CBD & Adaptogens \n\nWhen it comes to actually taking CBD and adaptogens, you may want to start by working with a trained herbalist. Adaptogens can bring your body back into balance but they may also be able to throw it off balance if you’re ingesting the wrong herbs for your needs. An herbalist can help make sure you’re on the right track, and help you adjust your regimen as needed. \n\nYou should also consult your doctor to ensure that neither CBD nor any other adaptogens you may be taking interact with your other medications. \n\nOnce you get the all-clear from your medical and herbal advisors, you’ll need to decide how to take your adaptogens and CBD. Mixing adaptogens into your food can be helpful, as many aren’t the most palatable things on their own. There are also capsules for those who don’t want to taste them at all.\n\nSome brands are now combining multiple adaptogens and CBD into a single product. If you can find one with a blend that works for you, this can really simplify things. \n\nOn the other hand, it can be helpful to get isolated versions of each adaptogen (including CBD) that you want to try. When you’re just getting started, it can be hard to tell which herbs are causing which effects. So, starting with one at a time to find the right dosage for each can help you to hone in on the best adaptogen regimen for you more easily and accurately. \n\nHerbalists recommend allowing for three to nine months of regular intake before evaluating how an adaptogen is affecting you. \n\nPhoto credit: Sebastian Duda/Shutterstock.com\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3888888888888888,"src":"/static/e981736cf96732dcd8607cd48bc852d0/14b42/4f693683fb8f1e7d0fd083745556944b.jpg","srcSet":"/static/e981736cf96732dcd8607cd48bc852d0/f836f/4f693683fb8f1e7d0fd083745556944b.jpg 200w,\n/static/e981736cf96732dcd8607cd48bc852d0/2244e/4f693683fb8f1e7d0fd083745556944b.jpg 400w,\n/static/e981736cf96732dcd8607cd48bc852d0/14b42/4f693683fb8f1e7d0fd083745556944b.jpg 800w,\n/static/e981736cf96732dcd8607cd48bc852d0/47498/4f693683fb8f1e7d0fd083745556944b.jpg 1200w,\n/static/e981736cf96732dcd8607cd48bc852d0/0e329/4f693683fb8f1e7d0fd083745556944b.jpg 1600w,\n/static/e981736cf96732dcd8607cd48bc852d0/ffa36/4f693683fb8f1e7d0fd083745556944b.jpg 1773w","srcWebp":"/static/e981736cf96732dcd8607cd48bc852d0/58556/4f693683fb8f1e7d0fd083745556944b.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/e981736cf96732dcd8607cd48bc852d0/61e93/4f693683fb8f1e7d0fd083745556944b.webp 200w,\n/static/e981736cf96732dcd8607cd48bc852d0/1f5c5/4f693683fb8f1e7d0fd083745556944b.webp 400w,\n/static/e981736cf96732dcd8607cd48bc852d0/58556/4f693683fb8f1e7d0fd083745556944b.webp 800w,\n/static/e981736cf96732dcd8607cd48bc852d0/99238/4f693683fb8f1e7d0fd083745556944b.webp 1200w,\n/static/e981736cf96732dcd8607cd48bc852d0/7c22d/4f693683fb8f1e7d0fd083745556944b.webp 1600w,\n/static/e981736cf96732dcd8607cd48bc852d0/d1528/4f693683fb8f1e7d0fd083745556944b.webp 1773w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3098-markdown","title":"How CBD Can Help Breast Cancer Survivors","slug":"how-cbd-can-help-breast-cancer-survivors","content":"Over three million American women have been diagnosed with some form of breast cancer. [Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers](https://www.cancer.net/cancer-types/breast-cancer/statistics) affecting women, second only to skin cancer. And men can develop breast cancer too, although far less frequently. \n\nDeaths from breast cancer have been steadily decreasing over the past few decades. And now, the five-year survival rate for localized breast cancers stands at an astonishing 99%. For patients with invasive forms of the disease, the survival rate is 90%.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nBut surviving breast cancer can come with its own set of stresses and challenges. Research reveals that [cannabidiol (CBD) may help with the physical and emotional aftermath](https://www.curetoday.com/community/bonnie-annis/2019/04/fighting-post-cancer-pain-cbd-worked-for-me) of breast cancer treatments.\n\n### Breast Cancer Is a Complex Disease\n\n[Diagnosing and treating breast cancer](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/breast-cancer/symptoms-causes/syc-20352470) can be complicated. Although some people have genetic markers for the disease, many others don’t, which makes it difficult to predict risk and take preventive measures. \n\nAnd although most people are familiar with the signature symptom of a lump in the breast, some forms of breast cancer have entirely different symptoms, such as:\n\n* Warmth and redness in the breast\n* Nipple discharges\n* Unusual irritation or puckering of the skin, resembling an orange peel.\n\nBreast cancer can run in families, especially those with genes that suppress tumor growth. People with close relatives who have certain types of cancer seem to be more at risk. These cancers include:\n\n*Pancreatic\n*Ovarian\n*Prostate\n\nAnd a person who has had cancer in one breast is at a higher risk of developing it in the other breast. \n\nHormones can also contribute to the development of breast cancer. Early menstruation and late menopause appear to raise the risk, and so does hormone replacement therapy for menopause symptoms. Likewise, having no children or having a first child after the age of 35 can raise the breast cancer risk. Researchers believe that’s because these situations increase the exposure of breast tissue to estrogens.\n\nEven race and ethnicity can play a role in breast cancer risk. People of Ashkenazi Jewish descent are more at risk, as are younger black women and older white women. \n\nLifestyle factors can also contribute to breast cancer risk. Documented risk factors include:\n\n* Smoking\n* Alcohol intake\n* Lack of exercise\n\nTreatment depends on factors such as the location and size of a tumor, the patient’s overall health and whether the cancer has spread to other areas of the body. In general, though, breast cancer treatment options include:\n\n* Surgery\n* Radiation therapy\n* Chemotherapy\n* Hormonal therapy\n* Immunotherapy\n\n### Breast Cancer Treatments Can Have Lasting Effects\n\nToday’s treatments for breast cancer can produce high survival rates, even in people whose cancer has become invasive—that is, it has spread beyond the breast itself. \n\nBut those treatments can have harsh effects on other parts of the body, and those effects can linger for months or years. [Long-term effects of breast cancer treatment](https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/kimmel_cancer_center/centers/breast_cancer_program/treatment_and_services/survivorship/side_effects.html) can include:\n\n* Fatigue\n* Headaches\n* Peripheral neuropathy (numbness and tingling in hands and feet)\n* Bone loss\n* Cataracts\n* Menopause symptoms\n* Heart problems\n* Lymphedema (swelling caused by damage to lymph nodes during treatment)\n* Blood clots\n* Problems with memory and cognition\n\nAlong with these physical symptoms, breast cancer survivors can experience a range of emotional issues. Although some people are simply relieved to finish treatment and move on with their lives, others face anxiety, depression and fear that the cancer could return. \n\n### CBD’s Healing Properties Can Help Breast Cancer Survivors\n\nSeveral studies have shown that CBD and other cannabis compounds [can be helpful during active cancer treatment](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30987191). Cannabis can help relieve the nausea and loss of appetite that often goes along with chemotherapy, and some research has shown that cannabis can even slow the development and spread of cancerous cells. \n\nBut for those in that [post-treatment period known as “survivorship,”](https://www.cancer.net/cancer-types/breast-cancer/survivorship) CBD’s many other healing properties can also provide relief from both the physical and emotional aftereffects of cancer treatment. \n\nCBD is just one of more than 100 different compounds and terpenes found in the _Cannabis sativa_ plant, and it’s responsible for many of the major medical effects of cannabis.\n\nCBD and other compounds including the well-known compound tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) activate the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS)—a network of cell receptors responsible for maintaining homeostasis, or balance, in the body’s many subsystems. \n\nCBD can affect endocannabinoid receptors directly, and it can also support the activity of other systems and processes that affect:\n\n* Mood\n* Pain signaling\n* Immune responses\n\nThat’s why CBD can be:\n\n* **Anti-inflammatory:** CBD can help fight infections and boost the body’s own immune responses.\n* **Neuroprotective:** CBD can protect nerves and neural pathways from damage and support the development of new neural connections.\n* **Analgesic:** Research reveals that CBD can help to relieve pain from a variety of causes—and that it can be as effective as prescription pain medications.\n* **Anxiolytic:** CBD can help to reduce anxiety and ease depression by supporting the body’s production of natural feel good chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine and anandamide.\n\nRELATED: [EATING ANANDAMIDE: THE BLISS MOLECULE](https://ondello.myshopify.com/blogs/articles/eating-anandamide-the-bliss-molecule/)\n\nCBD can also support cognitive functioning and memory as well as the cardiovascular and digestive systems. These documented properties of CBD can help breast cancer survivors cope with issues like:\n\n* Post-treatment pain\n* Neurological symptoms\n* Brain fog\n* Circulatory problems\n* Anxiety\n* Depression\n\n### How Can Breast Cancer Survivors Take CBD?\n\nUnlike standard prescription medications, there’s not a right way to take CBD. This compound is available in many forms and strengths, and it can take a little experimentation to find the approach that’s right for you. \n\nYou can get the benefits of CBD along with the full suite of other cannabis compounds in natural cannabis strains cultivated for high CBD content or through CBD products labeled “full spectrum.” CBD-infused edibles, tinctures and even topical ointments can also provide the benefits of CBD without smoking or vaping. \n\nWhatever products you choose, it’s wise to start with small doses and gradually increase the amount until you reach the desired effect. \n\nToday, more people are surviving breast cancer than ever before, but survival can bring challenges of its own. You don’t want to go the fast-food route but cooking from scratch isn’t happening. So, why not take advantage of some already prepared ingredients you can get at the supermarket? \n\nWith that in mind, I present to you my semi-homemade taco recipe. It’s easy, healthy-ish and is the perfect vehicle for adding cannabidiol (CBD). Because this dish includes guacamole, it’s easy to incorporate the hemp CBD oil of your choice. You don’t even have to infuse the whole dish. Serve the guacamole in individual ramekins so that you can mix in a personalized amount of CBD for each person.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nWe recommend stirring the CBD oil into the guacamole/avocado because you need to eat cannabinoids with fat in order to make them bioavailable. This ensures that your body can absorb more of the healing CBD than if you ate the CBD on its own. \n\nRELATED: [WHY YOU NEED TO EAT FAT WITH YOUR CANNABIS](https://hellomd.com/articles/why-you-need-to-eat-fat-with-your-cannabis/)\n\nFor a fun party idea, set up a CBD bar with various CBD oils of different flavors, strengths and effects. Then, each of your guests can choose the infusion they want and mix it into their individual guacamole portion. \n\n### The Healthy Stars of This CBD-Infused Taco Recipe\n\nDepending on what you put them, tacos can either be pretty healthy or filled with too much fat and calories. If you’re set on a healthy taco, consider making some swaps like low-fat cheese instead of regular cheese and choosing leaner cuts of meat. \n\nThis recipe’s healthy highlights are the lean chicken and also avocado, whose health benefits include:\n\n* Vitamins K, E and C \n* Good fats\n* Antioxidants\n* Folate, which can help combat depression\n\nInstead of the traditional sour cream, this recipe calls for Greek yogurt. Greek yogurt has the same tang as sour cream, but with fewer calories and less fat. Greek yogurt’s pretty healthy, too, because it’s:\n\n* High in protein\n* Packed with probiotics\n* Low in carbohydrates\n\nThen of course, there’s the CBD. Depending on which kind of CBD tincture you choose to include, these CBD-infused tacos can help you:\n\n* Relax\n* Sleep better\n* Relieve pain\n\nIn the ingredients list we include one dropper of CBD oil per person, but of course you can increase or reduce that amount as needed. Everyone’s different when it comes to how much CBD is the right amount for them, so play around with dosing until you hit your sweet spot. \n\n### Ingredients for Semi-Homemade CBD-Infused Tacos\n\nServes 4\n\n* 1 pre-cooked rotisserie chicken, shredded (You can buy a rotisserie chicken at pretty much any supermarket. If you’re a Costco member, you may already know that they sell huge rotisserie chickens for $5. They’re delicious and cost-effective.)\n* 2 avocados, smashed \n* 4 oz cheddar cheese, shredded (swap for low-fat cheese if you want)\n* 1 can beans of your choice\n* 8 tbsp Greek yogurt\n* 8 tbsp salsa\n* 8 tortillas of your choice\n* 4 droppers of your favorite CBD oil\n\n### How to Make Semi-Homemade CBD-Infused Tacos\n\n1. Pit both of the avocados and squeeze the avocado meat into a bowl. With a fork, mash the avocado until it’s the consistency you want (I like to leave some chunks in there for texture.). Season with salt, pepper and any other herbs you’d like, such as cilantro or red pepper flakes. Set aside.\n2. Shred your cheese with a grater. Place in a bowl and set aside.\n3. Shred your rotisserie chicken using whichever method is easiest for you. You can use two forks, your hands or some people even place chunks of chicken in their stand mixer and shred it quickly that way. Place on a large serving dish and set aside. \n4. To heat your beans, put them in a small saucepan over low-medium heat. Stir often to prevent sticking.\n5. To heat your tortillas, warm them in the microwave, oven or in a pan on the stove. To keep them piping hot, take the stack of hot tortillas and wrap them in a clean cloth. You can place this stack on your table so that people can reach for a tortilla when they need one. Keeping them wrapped together means they’ll stay warm until eaten. \n6. Here’s where you decide how you want to serve up your sauces. Either dish out individual ramekins of the Greek yogurt, avocado and salsa for each person. Or you can put all of the sauces in big bowls out on the table for people to serve themselves. If you’re serving individual portions, mix each person’s desired amount of CBD into their ramekin of guacamole. You can also just mix the CBD into the main bowl of guacamole for people to serve themselves from. \n7. Put everything on the table and let people assemble their tacos to their liking. \n\nPhoto credit: The Food Group/Shutterstock.com\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? Marijuana can be seen as being both over- and under-regulated, depending on where you live and what your feelings are on the subject. \n\nBut particularly when it comes to cannabidiol (CBD), the current landscape is at best a bit confusing, and at worst, like with the unregulated market, a sketchy road to go down at your own risk. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nCannabis manufacturers are using more and more methods to create their products, sometimes leaving folks scratching their heads as they wonder:\n\n* How were they made?\n* What exactly is in them?\n* What are the differences in terms of effects?\n\nIf you browse a dispensary or online CBD store, you’ve probably seen these three terms to describe a product:\n\n* Full-spectrum (sometimes called whole plant)\n* Broad-spectrum\n* Isolate\n\nThese terms describe the extraction processes the manufacturers used to separate the cannabinoids like CBD from the plant material. Let’s take a look at each one to help determine what’s the best product for you.\n\n### Choose Full-Spectrum CBD to Take Advantage of the Entourage Effect\n\nFull-spectrum products represent the gold standard in the cannabis extraction world. As the name implies,[full-spectrum CBD means they extract the entire plant ](https://www.chicagotribune.com/marijuana/sns-tft-benefits-of-cannabis-extracts-20190820-oxeuepjoizhy5cug5dxyfwu4pm-story.html).\n\nManufacturers use a variety of extraction techniques to derive full-spectrum oil from the cannabis plant. They commonly use CO2 for extraction, thought by many manufacturers to be safer and healthier than using solvents.\n\nAdvocates of full-spectrum extraction point to the importance of the entourage effectin cannabis medicine. \n\nThe entourage effect describes the process in which all of the chemical components of cannabis interact in the body, compounds such as:\n\n* Cannabinoids\n* Terpenes\n* Flavonoids\n* Fatty acids\n\nProponents of entourage effect says that all of these chemicals work better together than they do on their own, so full-spectrum products have a greater benefit to the consumer. \n\nThough much more research needs to be done, there seems to be mounting evidence that [full-spectrum CBD provides consumers with greater health benefits](https://wholistic.org/2019/01/the-debate-on-full-spectrum-cbd-vs-cbd-isolate-what-we-know/) than other kinds of CBD. \n\nFull-spectrum cannabis, when properly manufactured, can contain more than just CBD, and in fact it _should_. Just a few of the intriguing other cannabinoids which are showing great promise in easing several medical conditions include:\n\n* Cannabigerol CBG\n* Tetrahydrocannabivarin THCV\n* Cannbinol CBN\n\n\nAlways remember that full-spectrum CBD products derived from hemp will still have a very low, trace amount of THC. Full-spectrum CBD products derived from cannabis and sold in dispensaries may have a significantly higher percentage of THC. \n\nFor those who wish to take advantage of the entourage effect and are interested in the many benefits whole-plant cannabis has to offer, full-spectrum cannabis products are the way to go. \n\n### Broad Spectrum: More Than Just CBD, But no THC\n\nLike full-spectrum, broad-spectrum CBD contains all the bells and whistles of full-spectrum products, with one standout exception: It doesn’t contain any THC. \n\nManufacturers create broad-spectrum CBD in a couple of ways: \n\n* By creating a recipe, starting with CBD isolate (which we’ll discuss below) and adding in the other cannabinoids and terpenes into the mix.\n* By removing THC from a full-spectrum extract.\n\nBroad-spectrum fans appreciate the ability to enjoy everything that full-spectrum products have to offer, without the psychoactive effects related to THC.\n\n### CBD Isolate Is CBD Only\n\nCBD isolate represents where a certain sector of the cannabis industry is headed, and that’s deep inside laboratories. The extraction process, which includes what’s called [winterization](https://www.thestreet.com/lifestyle/what-is-cbd-isolate-14986685) results in the creation of a tasteless, odorless powder. CBD isolate is literally isolated CBD, with nothing else added. It’s touted as the purest form of CBD available and many people purchase the powdered isolate to make their own salves and topical products.\n\nManufacturers use isolate in the manufacture of many products like edibles, because it adds nothing to the product but the cannabinoid itself. Folks can also smoke or vape it, which provides the most immediate effects—a benefit for those taking CBD to treat anxiety. Isolates are sometimes combined with other ingredients to create a new CBD product.\n\nThere is one significant benefit to isolate: If you’re someone who must pass drug tests, consuming a CBD isolate product is the safest way to consume CBD. \n\nMost drug tests look for traces of a THC metabolite. CBD isolate, when properly manufactured, contains no THC, making it possible for consumers to take trusted CBD isolate products with [little concern of failing a drug test](https://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/to-be-blunt-cbd-drug-test-work/Content?oid=70760911). \n\nBut because federal and state regulations on CBD are still sometimes vague, even [products claiming to be CBD isolate could still retain traces of THC](https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/does-cbd-show-up-on-drug-test). Buying trusted brands from trusted sources, particularly in states where cannabis is already legal in some form, is the best way to ensure you’re getting what you paid for.\n\n### Other Factors to Consider When Choosing Your CBD\n\nUntil there are more standards around regulations, it’s very important to look at the contents of cannabis products you purchase. In legal states, labels must contain clear explanations of the ingredients. Labels are the best way to determine if you’ve purchased a full-spectrum product or something claiming to be one. \n\nOperators in the unregulated market and manufacturers taking advantage of the CBD boom to sell cheap products in convenience stores often make unsubstantiated claims about their products and aren’t very stringent about what they put on their packaging. \n\nBut in legal states, dispensaries can usually access lab reports about the products they sell, providing consumers with another layer of confidence and security. \n\nPhoto credit: ElRoi/Shutterstock.com\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? Second, why not?\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nMaybe you read the rules of some mainstream diet or heard your favorite fitness guru speak about how evil peanut butter is. But quite frankly, I don’t think it’s that bad (and I’m a natural food chef and fitness specialist). Of course, a big exception to including peanut butter in your diet is if you suffer from a serious, life-threatening allergy to peanuts. And if this is the case, simply substitute peanut butter for any other nut butter of your choice. You can also use hemp seeds or just omit it all together. \n\nThe next smoothie adjustment I decided to make was with my liquid of choice. Now, when you’re surfing the web for smoothie recipes that are tasty and healthy, or even if you’ve decided to just visit a local smoothie shop, their non-dairy milk choices are typically:\n\n* Almond\n* Coconut \n* Hemp \n\nBut what if you can’t have any those? Well, you could just use plain old water but why not try something different? This is why we’re introducing oat milk into this delicious recipe. You can find oat milk pretty much at any health food store, Whole Foods or even at Walmart nowadays.\n\nAnd if you’re looking to save some money, you can even make your very own oat milk. It’s really simple. All you need is:\n\n* 1 cup of oats\n* 3 cups of water\n\nJust blend them together for about 30 seconds and you’re done. You can strain it using a fine [mesh strainer or a nut milk bag](https://www.amazon.com/shop/officialcheft?ref=exp_inf_sh_own_officialcheft). It’s really your personal preference; the mesh strainer seems to work best for me. \n\nThen pour your oat milk into a mason jar, seal it tight and refrigerate for up to about a week. Now you’ve got your very own homemade oat milk, super simple. \n\n### Health Highlights of This CBD Shake \n\nHere are some of the nutritional highlights for this recipe:\n\n* **Oats**: Rich in antioxidants, oats can help repair skin and reduce inflammation.\n* **Bananas**: If sleep is an issue for you, then this smoothie may be the answer to some of your problems. Bananas contain the amino acid L-tryptophan, which helps with relaxation. Combining bananas with cannabidiol (CBD) may be the perfect combination to get the very important rest you need.\n\nRELATED: [DIY RECIPE: 3 NO-BAKE, CANNABIS-INFUSED BANANA DESSERTS](https://hellomd.com/articles/diy-recipe-3-no-bake-cannabis-infused-banana-desserts/)\n\n* **CBD**: Speaking of CBD, this cannabinoid stimulates the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which can help to create balance in the body. \n\nMany report CBD reduces:\n\n* Pain\n* Anxiety\n* Inflammation \n\nCBD can also help address certain diseases, such as:\n\n* Epilepsy\n* Asthma \n* Fibromyalgia\n\nThis protein-packed smoothie recipe is also gluten free, so long as you’re buying the oats that specify that they’re gluten free on the package. \n\nThis delicious recipe is also:\n\n* Soy free\n* Nut free \n* Dairy free\n\n### Ingredients for CBD-Infused Peanut Butter Oat Milk Protein Shake \n\nServes: 2\n\n* 1 cup oats\n* 16 oz oat milk\n* 2 medium bananas\n* 1 tbsp peanut butter\n* 1 tsp cinnamon\n* 4 ml [CBD tincture](https://hellomd.com/tag/tincture/)\n* 2 scoops vegan plant-based protein powder\n* 1 hand full of ice\n\n### How to Make CBD-Infused Peanut Butter Oat Milk Protein Shake \n\n1. Place all of your ingredients in a blender and blended until smooth.\n2. Serve in an 8 oz mason jar and garnish with fresh oats on top.\n3. If the smoothie is too thick, add more oat milk or water to thin it out. \n\nPhoto credit: [Tito Dudley aka Chef T](https://www.instagram.com/officialcheft/)\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? And when the bacteria doesn’t respond to antibiotics, things can go from uncomfortable to life-threatening very quickly. This is why it’s so exciting to see a new study showing antibiotic potential in a surprising place—with cannabidiol (CBD). \n\nWhile research is in early phases, researchers say scientists could develop CBD into an incredibly useful tool for fighting off bacterial strains that are already resistant to current antibiotics. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nCould CBD be the antibiotic of the future? \n\n### The Fight Against Antibiotic Resistance \n\nAntibiotics are drugs designed to fight off bacterial infections. They have been one of the major pillars of modern medicine, curing diseases that used to regularly kill people before Alexander Fleming discovered the first antibiotic, penicillin, in 1928. Now millions of people across the U.S. (and more around the world) take antibiotics when they’re sick with a bacterial infection.\n\nBut with antibiotics increased use, some of the bacterial strains we’ve been fighting have adapted. While traditional antibiotics still work well for many types of bacterial infections, they no longer affect certain strains of bacteria. \n\nThis phenomenon, known as antibiotic resistance, occurs when [bacterial strains adapt to the drugs we’ve designed to kill them](https://www.cdc.gov/drugresistance/about.html/), so that they’re no longer affected by them. As we develop new antibiotics, strains of bacteria develop new resistances, leaving us in a race to stay ahead of them. \n\nNow, [a study from the University of Queensland in Australia is offering new hope in the race against antibiotic resistance](https://eventpilotadmin.com/web/page.php?page=IntHtml&project=ASM19&id=287) and is pointing towards a new antibiotic treatment: CBD. \n\n### Study Reveals CBD’s Antibiotic Potential\n\nResearchers on the University of Queensland study looked at CBD as a potential antibiotic by testing it in a lab setting against various strains of bacteria. The authors found promising results, as CBD was able to kill all the strains of bacteria that they tested against it. This included some strains of bacteria that are resistant to traditional antibiotics, such as:\n\n* MRSA\n* VISA\n* VRSA\n* _Streptococcus pneumoniae_ \n* _Enterococcus faecalis_\n\nThe authors concluded that “cannabidiol possesses surprisingly effective activity as an antibiotic, comparable to widely used antibiotics” and said it could be an attractive antibiotic option, given its “documented anti-inflammatory effects, extensive safety data in humans, and potential for oral delivery.”\n\nIn other words, CBD is not only an effective antibiotic, but it can also reduce damage caused by inflammatory responses. Plus, it’s considered extremely safe. This makes it an excellent option for helping to treat bacterial infections. \n\nEven more exciting, the bacteria tested in this experiment didn’t become resistant to CBD even after a 20-day exposure period. \n\nSo, CBD may be more challenging for these bacterial strains to adjust to than other antibiotic options. This lack of antibiotic resistance could be a big development for creating more effective antibiotics and treating these challenging infections. \n\nWhile scientists say more work is needed to develop this into an effective antibiotic for humans, they think that they can develop CBD into a helpful antibiotic in the future.\n\n### Taking CBD for Illness Recovery \n\n[CBD can be really helpful when you’re sick with a bacterial infection](https://hellomd.com/articles/5-cbd-products-to-help-you-fight-the-cold-or-flu/). Perhaps in part because of its antibiotic effects, but also because of how it can reduce inflammation and boost your immune system to help it do its job more effectively. \n\nIf you’ve just come down with an illness, taking regular doses of CBD may help with your recovery. CBD tinctures are a great option for this because they’re easy to consume, and don’t involve any inhalation, so won’t add to any respiratory symptoms you may be experiencing. \n\nStill, it’s important not to simply replace your regular antibiotics with CBD just yet. While scientists may develop CBD antibiotic treatments in the future, we currently don’t have well-tested procedures in place for using CBD in this way. \n\nRELATED: [CAN CANNABIS CURE THE COMMON COLD?](https://hellomd.com/articles/can-cannabis-cure-the-common-cold/)\n\nThe studies so far have all been in lab settings, and human testing is needed to hone the finer details of this treatment. Plus, CBD only seems to work for certain kinds of bacterial infections, and you’d need to talk to a doctor to find out what type of infection you have.\n\nIf you think you need an antibiotic, don’t wait it out taking CBD alone—go to your doctor for treatment. \n\nAnd of course, always complete the full course of antibiotics that your doctor prescribes you. Many folks stop using antibiotics halfway through their treatment when their symptoms subside. But doing this actually contributes to antibiotic resistance because it exposes the bacteria to the antibiotic without killing it off completely. This allows the bacteria to adjust and adapt against the antibiotic, making it more difficult to get rid the next time around. \n\nSimilarly, you may want to be cautious about combining CBD and traditional antibiotics. While no problems have been reported with this combination, CBD can affect how you metabolize some medications, which can mean getting more or less of the other medication than you were supposed to. \n\nThis could make some medications less effective or even cause an overdose. Since there are many different types of antibiotics, some may have negative interactions, while others may be fine. \n\nCheck with your doctor about interactions before taking CBD and antibiotics in combination to ensure it will be both safe and effective. \n\nPhoto credit: Impact Photography/Shutterstock.com\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? It triggers the body’s repair mechanisms, allowing muscle tissue to grow back stronger, improving future athletic performances. \n\nBut too much tissue damage and inflammation can injure the body with strains and sprains, and result in poor athletic results.\n\nTraditional ways to cope with inflammation and pain include:\n\n* Eating antioxidant-rich foods\n* Taking ice baths\n* Consuming over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen (Advil) and naproxen sodium (Aleve)\n* Using opioids (for severe pain management)\n\nStudies have shown that cannabis can help reduce pain, which can include stiff joints and musculoskeletal pain from exercise. \n\nAnd while athletes have used NSAIDs for decades, they’re also associated with kidney damage and increased risk of heart attack and stroke. So, some athletes are finding that [CBD can relieve pain with minimal side effects](https://trainright.com/cbd-for-athletes-cannabidiol/). \n\nWhile opioids may be very successful at managing pain, they can come at a cost that may include addiction and death. CBD isn’t as successful at dealing with high-intensity pain, but may have a role to play in long-term pain management, taken on its own or alongside other medications.\n\nThere are also some suggestions that CBD can help slow the breakdown of muscles after exertion and even promote more muscle building. For example, preliminary research offered by the _Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research_ suggests that [CBD works in conjunction with the ECS to interfere with cortisol](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8257923), the stress hormone that reduces protein production and gets in the way of tissue growth.\n\n### But Can CBD Improve Actual Sports Performance? \n\nWhen it comes to sports performance itself, CBD’s benefits are harder to quantify. Yes, the cannabinoid can help relieve stress and promote sleep, both of which can help athletes compete better. \n\nBut this isn’t the same as a direct link in helping during the event or game. And when marathon runners talk about the help cannabis gave them while out on the course, it’s usually in regard to the effects of THC, not CBD.\n\nSays Michael Kennedy, a cardiologist and clinical pharmacologist who examined 15 studies on cannabis and exercise performance: “Different types of cannabis may have a lot of therapeutic values—but none of it will make you run fast, and it won’t make you stronger.” \n\n### Ways Athletes Can Consume CBD\n\nIn taking CBD, athletes have a choice of:\n\n* Oils\n* Capsules\n* Infused foods and drinks\n* Vaping \n\nFor the fastest pain and inflammation relief, you can choose from:\n\n* Vaping\n* Sublingual tinctures\n* Topical creams applied directly to the injured area \n\nThough vaping may be the consumption method that produces effects the fastest, many athletes would probably resist doing anything that risks stressing their lungs. \n\nFor longer-lasting effects, infused drinks and edibles may be the way to go.\n\nIt can get tricky when deciding what CBD dose to consume. First, it’s sometimes hard to calculate doses, because the amount of CBD that’s actually in different products varies so much and the bioavailability (how much CBD is actually accessible in your body) of each consumption method is different. The most precise way to take CBD may be capsules, or by calculating how many milligrams of CBD are in a given volume of a tincture.\n\nBut as a rule of thumb, if you’re new to CBD, it’s best to start with a low dose and work your way up. After all, you have to learn to walk before you run.\n\nPhoto credit: oneinchpunch/Shutterstock.com\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? Because the long-term effects of taking CBD in pregnancy aren’t known, many doctors recommend avoiding it altogether, except in rare instances where the benefits clearly outweigh the risks.\n\n### What We Know About Consuming THC During Pregnancy\n\nBetween 2000 and 2017, [cannabis consumption doubled among pregnant women in the U.S.](https://www.drugabuse.gov/news-events/news-releases/2019/06/study-finds-increased-cannabis-use-during-pregnancy), especially during the first trimester of pregnancy. \n\nA Canadian study found that over three quarters of women surveyed took cannabis during pregnancy for symptoms like nausea, even though they were aware of [warnings about potential risks to fetal health](https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2018/11/20/18068894/marijuana-pregnancy).\n\nThese statistics are raising concern among health care professionals. Current research indicates that [consuming cannabis during pregnancy can affect fetal development](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27567698). \n\nWhole-plant cannabis contains tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound that causes consumers to feel high. THC also activates receptors in the body’s natural endocannabinoid receptor system (ECS). The ECS is a network of cell receptors that responds to endocannabinoids as well as cannabinoids from outside sources, mainly the cannabis plant.\n\nThe ECS also plays a key role in supporting the development of the brain and nervous system. Recent studies reveal that THC can cross the placental barrier, so prenatal exposure to THC, even in small amounts, has the potential to cause long- lasting neurological harm in a developing fetus. \n\nThis can include problems with things like:\n\n* Learning\n* Coordination\n* Fine motor control \n\nResearch also indicates that consuming cannabis while pregnant can also lead to babies with low birth weight.\n\n[Advocates of cannabis consumption during pregnancy point to a study](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1957518) from the 1980s on a group of Jamaican children whose mothers consumed cannabis during pregnancy. At a five-year follow-up in 1991, researchers found no differences in development between these children and a control group whose mothers hadn’t consumed cannabis when they were pregnant.\n\nBut today’s cannabis is very different from the natural plant grown in rural Jamaica decades ago. Most marijuana strains are now hybrids that typically have a higher THC content than strains cultivated in earlier years. \n\nMeanwhile, different methods of consuming cannabis can deliver varying amounts of THC and other compounds into the bloodstream. For example, when smoking cannabis, THC and other compounds reach the bloodstream directly and very quickly, but the digestive system and liver processes marijuana edibles. This is why they act much more slowly. \n\nBut because there’s [so little research on cannabis consumption in pregnancy](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6211194/), scientists are still searching for a clear picture of the many ways in which cannabis can affect fetal development. \n\nBecause scientists don’t know how individual cannabis compounds like CBD can affect pregnancy, doctors are reluctant to green-light their use. And this is despite the fact that research on adults in general shows that these compounds are likely to be safe and beneficial.\n\n### CBD Has Many Health Benefits—But Not While You’re Pregnant\n\nCBD doesn’t cause consumers to feel high like THC can and boasts an impressive list of health benefits. \n\nHowever, CBD can have some undesirable side effects, such as gastric upsets. In general though, research has shown that it’s safe and doesn’t affect essential processes like:\n\n* Heart rate\n* Blood pressure \n* Respiration \n\nResearch has also shown that CBD can:\n\n* Support the immune system\n* Reduce inflammation\n* Relieve pain\n* Improve appetite\n* Protect neural pathways in the brain\n* Keep the ECS in balance\n* Relieve anxiety, depression and other symptoms of mood disorders\n* Reduce symptoms of a wide variety of conditions including epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease\n\nA number of the health problems that CBD can help with are also present during pregnancy, such as:\n\n* Nausea\n* Aches and pains\n* Mood changes\n\nThis is why a number of parenting and pregnancy resources are eager to recommend CBD as a safe and effective alternative to pharmaceuticals and over-the- counter remedies. And in states where medical cannabis is legal, [dispensaries may even cite cannabis as a natural remedy for morning sickness](https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/health/2019/08/14/smoking-weed-morning-sickness-pregnancy-risks-preterm-births-brain-development-prescription-drugs/1906148001/?utm_sq=g60y59q679).\n\nBut medical experts maintain that with a very few rare exceptions, it’s best to avoid cannabis from all sources during pregnancy—including CBD isolates in all forms, even topicals.\n\nHelloMD’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Patricia Frye, agrees. “The science is conflicting,” she says. “And until the science is conclusive, no cannabis products are recommended during pregnancy—unless the risk of low birth weight and/or neurodevelopmental adverse effects is outweighed by the benefit to the mother. And those instances are rare.”\n\nAmong the exceptional instances is a condition called hyperemesis gravidarum. This is a relatively rare but debilitating form of morning sickness that causes extreme and frequent episodes of vomiting. The condition can be so severe that the sufferer:\n\n* Is unable to eat\n* Becomes dehydrated \n* Can even require hospitalization \n\nWhen someone develops hyperemesis gravidarum, her baby loses essential nutrients and faces the risk of numerous other complications. Medications for hyperemesis gravidarum can have their own side effects, so CBD could be a safer alternative to relieve nausea and improve appetite.\n\nCBD may also be appropriate for a pregnant woman with severe epilepsy or psychosis when standard medications don’t work or have even greater potential to harm a developing fetus. \n\nBut Dr. Frye emphasizes that these situations are extraordinary. “These are rare and extreme cases,” she says. “I wouldn’t be willing to take the chance unless it were something that monumental. It’s all about risk vs. benefit.”\n\nCBD can be a largely safe and effective way to relieve the symptoms of a multitude of health problems. This is why it appeals to those looking for natural, nonmedical support during pregnancy. But without more research to show that it’s safe, doctors say it’s best to save your favorite CBD products until after your baby is born, and you’re no longer breastfeeding.\n\nPhoto credit: ArtFamily/shutterstock.com\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start?
