To celebrate the extra sunshine and daylight hours, it’s time to treat yourself with a healthy but delicious snack: carrot cake infused with cannabidiol (CBD). \n\nThis recipe will satisfy your sweet tooth, but won’t give you the sugar hangover that a traditional carrot cake would. Instead of cream cheese frosting, this recipe calls for a Greek yogurt-based topping that will produce the same creamy texture, but without the guilt. \n\nAnother plus of this crave-worthy carrot cake is that it’ll also get you your daily dose of CBD, whether you want to take CBD to:\n\n* [Help fight anxiety](https://hellomd.com/articles/understanding-how-cbd-can-calm-your-anxiety/) \n* [Ease chronic pain](https://hellomd.com/articles/4-hemp-derived-cbd-products-to-ease-pain/)\n* [Boost relaxation](https://hellomd.com/articles/can-cbd-help-ease-stress/) after a long work day \n\nYou can choose any CBD tincture you like for this recipe, but a flavorless one would probably work best. That said, if you want to add a twist, you could include a flavored one like a [lemon-ginger CBD tincture](https://www.hellolift.com/products/5bb54c9d15dd42feefa0a3eb/flavored-cbd-drops) to give your cake’s flavor profile more depth. \n\nWhichever tincture you choose, always ensure that it’s full spectrum, lab tested and made from hemp that’s responsibly grown. \n\nRELATED: [6 WAYS CBD GOES TO WORK IN YOUR BODY](https://hellomd.com/articles/taking-cbd-to-boost-your-bodys-antioxidant-levels/)\n\n### Ingredients for CBD-Infused Carrot Cake \n\nServes 12\n\n**For the cake:** \n\n* 12 mL hemp CBD \n* 1 1/2 cup whole wheat flour\n* 2 tsp baking soda\n* 1 tsp ground cinnamon\n* 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg\n* 1/4 tsp ground ginger\n* 1/8 tsp ground cloves\n* 1/4 cup coconut oil, melted\n* 2 eggs\n* 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract\n* 2/3 cup real maple syrup\n* 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt\n* 1/3 cup unsweetened almond or milk of your choice\n* 3 large carrots, finely grated\n* 1/2 cup raisins (optional)\n\n**For the frosting:** \n\n* 1/2 cups plain Greek yogurt\n* 2 tbsp real maple syrup\n* 1 tsp vanilla extract\n\n### How to Make CBD-Infused Carrot Cake\n\n1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. \n2. While the oven heats up, prepare your baking pan (9x13 inches is recommended) by coating it with nonstick spray; set aside. \n3. In a medium bowl, combine the dry ingredients—flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves. \n4. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, CBD tincture, coconut oil, vanilla extract, maple syrup, Greek yogurt and milk until completely smooth. \n5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until combined, but be careful not to over mix. \n6. Fold in the carrots and raisins, if using, with a silicon spatula. \n7. Transfer the cake mix to the prepared baking pan, and bake for 25 minutes or until the center of the cake is done. Insert a toothpick or fork into the cake. If it comes out clean, the cake is ready to come out of the oven. If your toothpick or fork has cake on it when you pull it out, you’ll need to bake a bit longer.\n8. To make the icing, simply stir together all of the frosting ingredients.\n9. When the cake’s done, let it cool completely before frosting it or the frosting will melt. \n\nPhoto credit: AS Food studio/Shutterstock.com\n\nIf you want to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? ","slug":"can-taking-cbd-cause-me-to-fail-a-drug-test","content":"By now, you’ve probably heard of cannabidiol (CBD), the incredible compound in the cannabis plant that provides relief from pain, anxiety and more without producing a high like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can. CBD is considered safe, nonintoxicating and without potential for abuse, so it greatly benefits folks looking to use cannabis’s healing powers without its mind-altering effects. \n\nCBD is also easy to access because you can extract it from hemp, which isn’t as strictly regulated as medical or recreational cannabis. \n\nWith all of these benefits, you may think that you could never get in trouble for taking CBD. But some CBD consumers are starting to ask one important question: Can taking CBD cause me to fail a drug test? \n\n### Is There THC in Hemp CBD Products?\n\nTo understand the issue with drug testing and CBD, you first have to grasp how the government defines cannabis and hemp. Hemp and cannabis are different varieties of the same type of plant, and both can produce CBD, THC and over 400 other organic chemicals. While cannabis cultivators focus on maximizing the production of these therapeutic chemicals, hemp farmers’ main concern is the production of hemp fiber, which companies then use for industrial purposes like making paper or fabrics. \n\nSince the government is primarily concerned with regulating THC, the highly psychoactive chemical in the plant, they distinguish between hemp and cannabis based on how much THC is present. A plant with less than 0.3% THC is considered hemp. Anything above 0.3% THC is considered cannabis and falls under much stricter rules.\n\nMany think that hemp-derived CBD products won’t have any THC in them. But in fact, most hemp products do contain at least some small amount of THC. Since drug tests are looking for THC, it’s an important distinction to understand. \n\n### How Cannabis Drug Tests Work \n\nThere are a few different ways to test for cannabis, but they all look for the presence of THC. To determine whether there’s been any exposure to THC, the screening may examine:\n\n* Blood\n* Saliva\n* Hair\n* Urine\n* Breath\n* Sweat \n* Fingernails \n\nIn blood tests, doctors can look for THC in the blood directly. Hours or up to a single day after consuming cannabis, THC levels will be temporarily elevated—and will likely show up in your blood. \n\nBut even after these levels go back down to normal, testers can still look for its metabolite, THC-COOH. A metabolite is a substance that your body makes in the process of metabolizing something. And THC’s metabolite hangs around in the body for much longer than THC itself. \n\nUrine tests are probably the most popular choice for drug testing, and these look for THC-COOH. Still, it’s not entirely clear how long these metabolites stay detectable in your body. \n\nResearch has shown high variability from person to person when it comes to this. Estimates have been anywhere from three to 40 days for the metabolites in the urine to totally clear someone's system. The reason for this wide range is the variability in people’s cannabis consumption and metabolism. \n\nThose who have been taking cannabis for longer or folks who take higher doses, may find it takes longer for the metabolites to leave their body. Some people may also be naturally quicker or slower when it comes to this process, so it’s notoriously hard to predict. \n\nHair tests have the longest window for detection, with the ability to find metabolites up to 90 days after consumption. \n\n### Can You Fail a Drug Test After Taking Only CBD?\n\nDrug tests only look for THC, not CBD. So, CBD consumers may think they have nothing to worry about. But while none of these tests look for CBD directly, it may be possible (although unlikely) for tests to detect the THC in your CBD products and cause a failed test. \n\nIn fact, this has already started to happen. A woman from Atlanta says she [lost a job opportunity because a pre-employment drug test showed THC in her system](https://www.forbes.com/sites/mikeadams/2018/10/18/marijuana-madness-this-is-how-cbd-oil-can-cause-a-failed-drug-test/#4012d469713b). She says she never consumed cannabis, other than a doctor-recommended CBD oil. \n\nBut since CBD oil can contain trace amounts of THC, if taken in big enough doses these small amounts can start to add up. For those taking high doses, such as 1,000 mg or more of CBD on a daily basis, they may be consuming a significant amount of THC without even realizing it and it could be enough to fail a drug test. \n\nAnd don’t think that using CBD topically will help you avoid this problem. One study also looked at other CBD applications like using hemp oil products on hair and skin. In this study, [just applying hemp CBD oil to someone’s hair could cause them to fail a hair test for THC](https://norml.org/news/2019/02/28/study-cosmetic-application-of-hemp-seed-oil-to-hair-triggers-a-positive-drug-test). So, while both topical and ingestible CBD is widely available, depending on how it’s used either form could contain enough THC to trigger a positive test result. \n\nTo make matters more complicated, hemp is only approved for industrial uses—not as a food product—so it isn’t regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the way most products that we ingest are. No one’s checking to see if these products’ claims and dosing guidelines are accurate. It’s possible that a hemp-derived product has much more THC than is strictly legal for hemp. \n\nWithout regulation from the FDA, there’s no telling what’s in that random bottle of CBD oil you picked up at the convenience store. It may just be vegetable oil without anything else in it; it may have too much THC to be considered hemp; or it may be something more dangerous. \n\nIn Utah, [something sold as CBD oil poisoned over 50 people](https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/67/wr/mm6720a5.htm?s_cid=mm6720a5_w#T1_down). In fact, it didn’t contain any CBD but rather a dangerous synthetic cannabinoid known as “spice.” This is why it’s so important to make sure you buy CBD from a reputable brand that lab tests their products. \n\nRELATED: [WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR WHEN BUYING HEMP CBD OIL](https://hellomd.com/articles/what-to-watch-out-for-when-buying-hemp-cbd-oil/)\n\n### Avoiding Failed Drug Tests When Taking CBD\n\nSo, CBD can make you fail a drug test, but it’s unlikely. Positive tests for THC are rare with CBD consumers, especially when the CBD isn’t taken in high doses. But it’s possible—and could be more likely for those with slower metabolisms. \n\nFor folks subject to drug testing, a failed test is a real risk to be aware of. Still, for most CBD consumers this will never pose a problem because they simply aren’t consuming enough CBD to trigger a positive THC result. \n\nTo reduce your risk of a failed drug test, aim for lower doses of CBD and go with lab-tested products so you know exactly what you’re putting in your body. Plenty of companies are rushing to put CBD on the shelf, but the gas station or corner store isn’t the best place to go for it. \n\nTo avoid accidentally ingesting too much THC with your CBD, make sure you go with well-established, extensively tested and medically-oriented hemp CBD brands. \n\nPhoto credit: EAK MOTO/Shutterstock.com\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? ","slug":"can-cbd-help-with-gingivitis-and-gum-disease","content":"A 2017 study out of Columbia University made a [connection between cannabis and gum disease](https://www.dmdtoday.com/news/new-study-suggests-link-between-gum-disease-and-cannabis-use) that many hadn’t considered before. In the study, researchers looked at surveys from over 1,900 people about their cannabis consumption (including hashish and cannabis oil) and dental health. They found that cannabis consumers had more markers of periodontal disease than non-consumers and infrequent cannabis consumers did. \n\nBut were the results reliable? And what about cannabidiol (CBD)? Was this cannabinoid lumped in with cannabis rich in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)? Let’s take a closer look at a few studies to see whether CBD is good or bad for your gums. \n\n### What Is Gum Disease? \n\nWhen you think of the dentist, you may only consider your pearly whites. But any good dental professional will pay close attention to your gums, too. You may be surprised to learn that there’s thought to be a link between bad gums and a host of serious health conditions like:\n\n* Stroke\n* Artery disease\n* Rheumatoid arthritis\n\nThe theory goes that the bacteria from a gum infection can travel to other parts of your body, causing harm. Though more studies need to be done to prove a conclusive link between gum disease and other health conditions, it’s a theory that many health professionals keep in mind. \n\nThere are two main types of gum disease:\n\n* Gingivitis\n* Periodontitis\n\nGingivitis appears first, caused either by too much plaque (and poor dental hygiene that helps it stick around) or bad nutrition. In some cases, though, a virus, bacteria or allergic reaction can cause gingivitis. \n\nThe sometimes-painful symptoms of gingivitis can include:\n\n* Inflamed, swollen gums \n* Bad breath\n* Bleeding when brushing or flossing\n\nYou can usually turn a gingivitis diagnosis around with regular brushing and flossing—though a good dental cleaning is often in order to get the gums to an ideal starting place before you take over at home. \n\nPeriodontitis is what happens when folks leave gingivitis untreated, and it turns into something more painful and serious. This is when plaque builds up, creates pockets around the teeth and bacteria gets trapped in there. It then wreaks havoc on gums, damaging the tissue and even the supportive bone below your teeth. \n\nPeriodontitis symptoms include: \n\n* Bleeding gums\n* Inflamed, red gums\n* Receding gums \n* Pus\n* Pain when eating\n\nLike gingivitis, dentists recommend regular brushing, flossing and mouthwash as treatment—and, of course, regular visits to the dentist.\n\n### Columbia University Study Says Cannabis Is Bad for Gums\n\nThe Columbia University study, published in the _Journal of Periodontology_ looked at self-reported data from a few years prior. The participants reported cannabis and tobacco use, and researchers took measurements of gum loss and depth. \n\nOf the nearly 2,000 surveys they reviewed, around 27% of participants said they consumed cannabis recreationally at least once in the past year. (They separated out tobacco smokers so as not to skew the data.) And these people had more markers for periodontitis.\n\nSo, the headline read: Study suggests link between gun disease and cannabis use. \n\nBut self-reported studies should always be looked at with a bit of skepticism. \n\n* Were the participants reporting the truth about their cannabis and tobacco consumption? \n* What kind of cannabis were they consuming? \n* Were they consuming mostly by smoking, which we know is not great for oral health? \n* Or were they using smoke-free methods like cannabis tinctures or edibles? \n\nAll of these factors are important to know before putting out a blanket statement linking the plant to gum disease. \n\n### CBD’s Anti-Inflammatory Properties May Be Good for Gum Health\n\nThere are also studies that say the opposite when it comes to gum health and CBD, specifically. We know that CBD is a potent anti-inflammatory. And since inflammation is a big symptom of gingivitis and periodontitis, you’d think that CBD could help calm inflamed gums—and studies back this up.\n\nIn a [2009 study performed on rats](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19070683), researchers divided the subjects into three groups: a control group, a group with gum disease and a third group with gum disease that was treated with CBD. The group that researchers gave CBD to showed less bone loss and inflammation in their gum tissue. \n\nAnother lab-based study [looked at the endocannabinoid anandamide](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=Endocannabinoid%2C+anandamide+in+gingival+tissue+regulates+the+periodontal+inflammation+through+NF-kappaB+pathway+inhibition). Anandamide, produced naturally by the body, is very close structurally—and how it acts in the body—to THC. Researchers found that the endocannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2, were present in gum tissue, and that anandamide seemed to decrease inflammation. \n\nSo, not only is the receptor (CB2) that interacts with CBD found in the gums, but CBD also increases anandamide levels in the body. It does this by stopping the enzyme that breaks down anandamide. So, more anti-inflammatory CBD in your system means more gum-soothing anandamide, too. \n\nRELATED: [EATING ANANDAMIDE: THE BLISS MOLECULE](https://hellomd.com/articles/eating-anandamide-the-bliss-molecule/)\n\n### How to Incorporate CBD Into Your Oral Health Routine\n\nIt goes without saying that a smokeless CBD consumption method is best if you want the cannabinoid to help prevent gum disease or ease the symptoms of an infection you already have. And this includes vaping, too. Though it’s not thought to be as harmful as smoking is, vaping may irritate already-tender and inflamed gums. \n\nYour best bet may be a [CBD tincture](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-tinctures-what-they-are-and-why-you-want-them/), placed directly under the tongue and held in the mouth for at least a minute (or as long as you can keep it there). Alternately, you can add the tincture in the drink of your choice. \n\nA method where you hold the CBD in your mouth for a minute or so is one of the best ways to ensure a high percentage of cannabinoids make their way into your system. This is because the mucous membranes in the mouth are very porous and so can make more CBD available to your body quickly.\n\nThe best way to treat your gums is with regular brushing, flossing, a good antibacterial mouthwash and a visit to your dentist at least twice a year. Even when it seems like we have everything together, the daily grind can take a big toll. That’s why it’s so important to find time to nourish your body and soul with self-care. \n\nMost of us would love to slip off for a self-care day at a luxurious spa when we’re feeling especially worn out or stressed, but it’s not always in the cards. Between timing and expense, it’s hard to make spa visits a regular occurrence. \n\nBut don’t let that stop you. Pamper yourself in your own space with a home spa day featuring cannabidiol (CBD). You can have many of the same decadent treatments you’d find at a spa in the comfort of your own home. Plus, you’ll have the added benefits of CBD, which is known for its ability to:\n\n* [Provide relaxation](https://hellomd.com/articles/can-cbd-help-ease-stress/)\n* [Reduce inflammation](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-cbd-can-curb-chronic-inflammation/) \n* [Ease pain](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-cbd-can-help-relieve-sore-muscles/)\n\n### Take a CBD Tincture Before Yoga for Full-Body Relaxation\n\nSince CBD can help you relax, relieve pain and cut down on inflammation, it can be a great way to prepare for a day of chilling out and working on your body. Before you get started with your day of relaxation, try taking a CBD tincture to ease your body into a more relaxed and comfortable state, and do a little stretching or yoga. \n\nI like starting out wit [Juna’s Nude tincture](https://www.hellolift.com/products/5b57ae4502f1740001523014/nude). It’s a low-dose tincture (5–10 mg per dose), so it’s great for those who are new to CBD. \n\nPlus, it tastes great. While it’s just coconut oil and hemp extract, this CBD tincture has a rich herbaceous flavor reminiscent of a high-end, herb-infused olive oil. \n\nPut a dropper full under your tongue, and hold it there for 30 seconds to a minute, swallowing whatever’s left. Then spend 10–15 minutes doing yoga or just stretching. If you’ve never done yoga before or want direction, check out the one of the many free yoga videos online. \n\nCombining yoga and CBD is a great way to begin your spa day and start shifting your focus away from your seemingly endless to-do list and on to your body. \n\n### Give Yourself a Massage With a CBD-Infused Topical\n\nAfter yoga, you may find yourself more in tune with the places in your body that need some extra love and attention. Do you have any sore or tense muscles that need massaging? Pull out a CBD-infused topical, and take some time for a self-massage. You’ll not only get the benefits of a good massage, but also the tension-taming, pain-relieving, inflammation-fighting powers of CBD. \n\nThe [CBD-infused Essential Oil Trio from Basic Jane](https://www.hellolift.com/products/5beca7712ae500d4af82e009/essential-oil-trio) is a great option, because it not only includes plenty of CBD, but it also comes in three different scents: Awake, Relax and Relieve. You can pick the scent that fits your mood, and gain all of the benefits of aromatherapy while you work on your muscles. \n\nRELATED: [5 HEMP CBD PRODUCTS FOR YOUR ACHES & PAINS](https://hellomd.com/articles/5-hemp-cbd-products-for-your-aches-and-pains/)\n\n### Pamper Yourself With a CBD-Infused Facial & CBD Cucumber Rose Water \n\nOnce your massage is complete, next it’s time for your CBD-infused facial. And what adds more of a spa-like feeling than sipping on a cool glass of CBD-infused cucumber rose water while you have your facial? You’ll want to prepare your cucumber beverage the night before, putting a pitcher of water with fresh cucumber slices in the fridge to chill. \n\nI like [Verte’s Esprit De Rose](https://www.hellolift.com/products/5b57b9ab02f17400015230af/esprit-de-rose) for this part of the home spa experience, because it’s both a CBD and rose-infused facial mist, and also an edible you can add to drinks. Start by pouring yourself a glass of chilled cucumber water and adding a few spritzes of the Esprit De Rose to the mix. Keep your drink nearby to sip on while you rest with your facial on. \n\nNext, start your facial by removing anything already on your face. [Verte’s Micellar H2O cleansing pads](https://www.hellolift.com/products/5b57b95e02f17400015230ae/micellar-h2o-facial-cleansing-pads) work great for this purpose. Then use two to four spritzes of the Esprit De Rose on your face, applying in gentle, upward and circular motions to evenly distribute it. \n\nFinally, take two slices of the chilled cucumber from your pitcher of water and place them over your eyes. Take 10–15 minutes to rest with the cucumbers and facial. There’s no need to wipe your face after applying the CBD. Just let it soak into your skin, leaving it supple, soft and plump for the rest of the day. \n\n### End Your Spa Day With a Soak in a CBD-Infused Bath\n\nFinish off your spa day with a relaxing soak in a CBD-infused bath. First, fill your bathtub with warm to hot water, and then add some CBD oil. You can use [Verte’s Elevate Vital Oil](https://www.hellolift.com/products/5b57bb1602f17400015230c2/elevate-vital-oil). Just add a few droppers to your bath, and let yourself soak in the CBD goodness. Your skin and muscles will thank you.\n\nYou can also use CBD soap with your bath while you soak. Made from a high-quality, hemp CBD extract and coconut oil, [Wildflower’s CBD Soap](https://www.hellolift.com/products/5b57b4b502f1740001523086/cbd-soap) is a gentle yet powerful cleanser that can improve your skin’s health _sans_ dryness. It comes in two relaxing scents: vanilla and lavender. So, soak, relax and leave your bath feeling rejuvenated and refreshed. \n\nPhoto credit: Anna Om/Shutterstock.com\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? CBD can help your dog by: \n\n- Easing anxiety\n- Alleviating pain\n- Quelling gastrointestinal distress \n- Reducing seizures\n\nGiven all of these benefits, it’s no surprise that there are a ton of CBD dog treats on the market—all with various ingredients and different doses. \n\nBut have you ever thought about making your own CBD-infused dog treats? It may sound silly—even a little frivolous—but it is actually simple, easy, and, most importantly, practical. \n\nWhen you make your own CBD-infused dog treats, you get to control the amount of CBD that goes into each batch. This allows you to cater your CBD dog treats specifically to your pup’s needs. And as an added bonus, you get to:\n\n- Pick your pet’s favorite flavors\n- Avoid ingredients that don’t sit well with their bellies\n- Maybe even save a few bucks \n\n![Hello1-min (41).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_41_2ac1f0f47b.png)\n\nHaving CBD dog treats on hand is also convenient. You can take them with you on outings with your K9 and administer them as the situation calls. \n\nThis recipe for CBD dog treats contains only five ingredients, including a hemp CBD tincture. You can use a tincture that’s marketed specifically for dogs, like [Holistic Hound’s tinctures](https://holistichound.com/), which come in 100 mg, 250 mg, and 500 mg concentrations. Or you can opt for a plain, flavorless tincture like [Cured Nutrition’s Full Spectrum Raw Oil](https://www.curednutrition.com/product/raw-daily-hemp-oil/). \n\nWhatever you decide to use in your CBD-infused dog treats, make sure to double-check that the tincture has been lab-tested for potency as well as the presence of pesticides and heavy metals. You’ll also want to ensure that the tincture doesn’t have any added essential oils, which could potentially be harmful to your pup.\n\nLastly, feel free to use any type of flour you’d like in your CBD-infused dog treats. Wheat or other grains don’t sit well with some dogs. If this is the case, opt for alternative flours like rice, almond, or coconut flour. \n\n![Hello3-min (33).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello3_min_33_954cfa1b62.png)\n\n### Ingredients for Peanut Butter & Pumpkin CBD Dog Treats\n\n- 3 cups of flour of your choice\n- 2 large eggs\n- 2/3 cup pumpkin puree\n- 1/4 cup peanut butter\n- hemp CBD tincture (amount you use is up to you)\n\nHere are a few things to consider: \n\n- The number of CBD-infused dog treats that this recipe makes depends on how you decide to divide up the dough.\n\n- Think about how much CBD you want in each dog treat. \n\nUse these two factors to determine how much of your hemp CBD tincture to use. For example, if you think you can make 36 CBD dog treats, and you want each treat to contain 2 mg of CBD, use about 72 mg of CBD for your recipe. \n\n![Hello2-min (39).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello2_min_39_f4932b35f5.png)\n\n### How to Make Peanut Butter & Pumpkin CBD Dog Treats\n\n- 1.) Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a baking sheet or line one with parchment paper. \n- 2.) Using a whisk or electric mixer, beat pumpkin puree, peanut butter, eggs, and hemp CBD oil until well combined. It’s important that you mix these ingredients well, as you want the CBD oil to be well dispersed. \n- 3.) Gradually add in 2 1/2 cups of flour, mixing until all ingredients are well incorporated. \n- 4.) If dough is still sticky, slowly add more flour in 1/4 cup increments until the dough loses its stickiness. \n- 5.) Using a lightly floured surface, knead the dough until it comes together. \n- 6.) Use a rolling pin to roll out the dough—we recommend getting it to about a 1/4 inch thickness. Use cookie cutters or a shot glass to cut out shapes and place them onto your prepared baking sheet. \n- 7.) Bake in the oven until golden brown, about 20 minutes. \n- 8.) Let treats cool completely before serving. These CBD dog treats will keep at room temperature for a few days, but you can store them in the fridge to extend their shelf life.\n\n### Get a Medical Marijuana Card Online\n\nIt's easy to get your medical marijuana document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://www.hellomd.com/get-started/). Some folks have found that consuming cannabidiol (CBD) provides an effective respite from anxious thoughts. \n\nCBD is a marijuana cannabinoid that doesn’t produce a head high like the other famous cannabinoid, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), can. But it has been shown to help temper anxiety. \n\nFor example, in a small study from 2011, a group of [people with social anxiety disorder took either CBD or a placebo before a test](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3079847/). The subjects who consumed CBD felt less anxious and their physiological signs of anxiety, like elevated blood pressure and heart rate, decreased compared to that of the placebo group. \n\nIf you’re interested in taking CBD to help calm anxiety, check out our three most popular Q&As about CBD for anxiety. Is there any evidence that CBD helps with anxiety and what way is best for me to consume it?\n**_I don’t live in a legal marijuana state, but I have terrible anxiety and have heard that CBD derived from the hemp plant may be something I can try._**\n\nAnswer: [@BartSmart](https://www.hellolift.com/people/5817af1a97ed67000a00143c/bartsmart) In my opinion, it wouldn't hurt to try CBD that’s derived from the hemp plant. The difference between hemp-derived CBD and cannabis-derived CBD is the amount of THC in the plant.\n\nI have heard success with vaporizing CBD for quickest relief during an anxiety attack, while using CBD edibles regularly to maintain homeostasis, or a balance in one's mind and body.\n\nCBD promotes neurogenesis which can have a calming effect on people leading to a decrease of anxiety for some.\n\nCBD comes from agriculturally derived hemp and you would just want to make sure that your hemp is responsibly sourced.\n\nWe at HelloMD have heard of many testimonials about CBD helping people deal with their anxiety.\n\n### Q. What is a good starting dose of CBD oil for anxiety and pain relief?\n**_I have some softgels and tincture._** \n\nAnswer: [@helenanp](https://www.hellolift.com/people/59820d531d86bf357ccec0d3/helenanp) The right amount of CBD oil will vary from person to person. We each have a unique endocannabinoid system, so some people will require less, and others will require more. \n\nIt’s best to start with a low dosage and then slightly raise this dosage until you receive the desired result. I would start with a drop of CBD oil a day and see how it affects you. Every 2–3 weeks I would increase by an additional drop. Remember to space the drops throughout the day. \n\nContinue to increase by a drop every 2–3 weeks until your symptoms decrease. You need to experiment a little to see what dosage is best for you.\n\n### Q. It’s rare, but contact with infected tissues can cause this type of disease to spread from person to person. Unfortunately, the search continues for effective treatments to combat the symptoms. \n\nThat said, some research is showing that cannabidiol (CBD) could help ease the symptoms of a prion disease, because of its well-documented ability to protect and heal neural pathways in the brain. \n\n### What Are Prion Diseases?\n\nMost people learned what a [prion disease](http://www.prionalliance.org/2013/11/26/what-are-prions/) was back in the ’90s when such a disease broke out in a big way in the U.K. It was called mad cow disease, with cases of this particular type of prion disease subsequently found in the U.S., Canada and France over the next couple of decades.\n\nAlthough mad cow disease (scientific name: bovine spongiform encephalopathy) originated in animals, humans who ate meat from infected animals could contract it, too. Even earlier than that, though, researchers had identified similar forms of the disease in sheep and wild species like elk and deer. \n\nThe same kind of disease can also originate in humans. The most common prion disease in humans is Creuzfeldt-Jakob disease, and it occurs worldwide in about one in one million people. \n\nEven though these types of diseases are rare, they can provide insights about the bigger picture of neurodegenerative brain diseases in general.\n\nPrions (short for proteinaceous infectious particle) arise from a common protein in the brain, called prion protein (PrP). This protein [plays a key role in promoting neuron growth and protecting synapses](https://medicalxpress.com/news/2013-02-good-side-prion-molecule-dangerous.html)—the contact point between neurons where signals are transmitted. Everyone has a gene that contains instructions telling cells how to make PrP. \n\nNormally, PrP exists in a healthy state called cellular prion protein or PrPC. But each prion protein contains two elements:\n\n* One has a clearly defined, known structure that resembles a ribbon. \n* The other is disordered and unstructured, and its function is largely unknown. \n\nThe unstructured, unstable element [can become malformed, so that it looks like a ribbon folded at sharp angles](https://phys.org/news/2014-01-pathological-misfolding-prion.html). \n\nWhen this happens, a healthy PrPC becomes a new kind of prion protein called PrPSC. And just one particle of PrPSC can cause other healthy proteins to convert to this folded shape. \n\nAs more and more proteins fold, damage spreads throughout the brain and causes symptoms such as:\n\n* Dementia\n* Poor vision\n* Trouble with balance \n* Diminished coordination\n* Loss of speech and other functions\n\nInfections generally spread by agents such as bacteria or viruses. But what makes a prion disease so mysterious and hard to treat is that the infectious agent is a protein that exists normally in the brain. It’s unclear what causes a PrPC protein to turn into a PrPSC and why it can cause other proteins to do the same. \n\nThe fact that someone with a prion disease can transmit it to another person sets it apart from other kinds of neurodegenerative conditions. For example, [researchers haven’t found evidence](https://www.brightfocus.org/alzheimers/article/can-you-catch-alzheimers-disease) that other neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s disease can be passed from one individual to another.\n\nBut in prion diseases like mad cow, humans who ate the tissue of a diseased animal also contracted the disease. For human prion diseases like Creuzfeldt-Jakob, transmission usually happens through surgical procedures that involve transplants of infected tissue, or when medical staff comes in contact with a patient’s fluids or improperly sterilized surgical instruments. \n\nConcerns about the transmission of prion diseases have also prompted the World Health Organization and other bodies to issue strict guidelines for funeral homes on how to handle the bodies of people with prion diseases, especially if they’ve been autopsied.\n\n### Proteins Also Play a Role in Other Neurological Conditions \n\nAlthough prion diseases are rare, they’re the subject of intense study and research because of their severity and lack of available treatment options. \n\nBut [new research on prion disease is building connections](https://medicalxpress.com/news/2007-07-alzheimer-role-prions.html) between these diseases and more familiar neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. These studies are raising the possibility that some treatments for these conditions could also be useful in treating Creuzfeldt-Jakob and other classic prion diseases.\n\nSome studies have even raised the intriguing possibility that Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s could also be considered prion diseases, since malformed proteins play a role in their development as well. \n\nResearchers believe that tau and beta-amyloid proteins are responsible for Alzheimer’s disease. These proteins contribute to the plaque and tangles that interfere with the brain’s normal functioning. \n\nAnother protein called alpha synuclein appears to cause the neurological symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. In fact, the healthy prion protein PrPC appears to support the plasticity of brain synapses and encourage neurological connections, so it may even help prevent these kinds of neurological disorders, too.\n\n### CBD Can Help Protect the Brain’s Neural Networks\n\n[Research has shown that CBD can reduce inflammation and protect the brain’s neural networks](https://www.dementiacarecentral.com/aboutdementia/treating/cbd/). And this is the case not only for neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, but even in brain trauma caused by events like accidents and strokes. \n\nThe brain is rich in receptors for the endocannabinoid system (ECS)—the body’s system of receptors, which interacts with naturally occurring cannabinoids the body produces and those from outside sources, such as cannabis and hemp. \n\nCBD can activate these ECS receptors and also help regulate other systems and processes to promote brain health such as:\n\n* Improving blood flow\n* Protecting cells from oxidation \n* Supporting the growth of new neural connections\n\nSo far, the research on the applications of CBD specifically for prion diseases has been very limited. One often-cited French study reports that [in animal models, CBD appears to provide some protection from prion damage](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17804615), so that it can reduce the severity of the symptoms. \n\nBut given the limitations of this study and the lack of other research to support it, prion disease researchers and advocates have been reluctant to endorse CBD as an effective treatment for these diseases. \n\nScientists are still working to understand how prion diseases develop and progress. Still, recent research that connects prion diseases with other protein-related conditions like Alzheimer’s seems to suggest that if CBD can help relieve symptoms of other neurological conditions, it just may be useful in treating the symptoms of prion diseases, too. \n\nPhoto credit: Orla/Shutterstock.com\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? Part of that experimentation could include something called layering: using different types of CBD to achieve the effects you want. \n\nBy layering different CBD consumption methods, you can boost effectiveness and avoid growing an immunity to the benefits of any one CBD product. \n\nLet’s take a look at what it means to layer CBD and how this new method can work well for people suffering from arthritis. \n\n### How Do You Layer CBD?\n\nThe concept of layering CBD is pretty basic. Just like you layer certain colors on top of each other to make new colors, using multiple CBD delivery methods at the same time can bring about new levels of effectiveness. These different delivery methods include inhalation (vaporizing or smoking), edibles, sublinguals and topicals. \n\nLayering works because each delivery method provides very different effects. When ingesting an edible, you can expect a longer onset time (typically 30 minutes to two hours), but longer-lasting effects (up to six hours on average). \n\nMeanwhile, CBD vaporizers provide nearly immediate effects, but they typically don’t last as long (30 minutes to an hour) as edibles do. \n\nHere’s an example of how you could layer two different CBD delivery methods to boost effects: If you suffer from insomnia, you could eat a highly potent CBD edible; it will take some time for it to kick in, but it will be long lasting and provide benefits throughout the night. While you wait for the edible to take effect, you can layer a CBD vaporizer on top of the edible. The vaporizer will provide immediate effects, helping you wind down for a restful night of sleep. \n\n### Tips for Layering CBD\n\n* Before layering more than one CBD product, it’s important to know how each one affects you separately. Try them each independently. Once you’re comfortable, you can begin to layer them. \n* When taken together, different CBD delivery methods can produce more pronounced effects. Try a lower dose of each individual method when layering so you don’t overdo it. \n\nRELATED: [5 HEMP CBD PRODUCTS FOR YOUR ACHES & PAINS](https://hellomd.com/articles/5-hemp-cbd-products-for-your-aches-and-pains/) \n\n### Arthritis & How CBD Can Help\n\nArthritis is widespread, with [31 million Americans](https://www.arthritis.org/about-arthritis/understanding-arthritis/arthritis-statistics-facts.php) suffering from some form of the condition. Most people associate arthritis with aging, but this painful inflammation condition can strike at any age—even children can suffer from arthritis. \n\nThere’s no one single type of arthritis; it’s an umbrella term for many diseases that all negatively affect joints in the body.\n\nOne constant across all of these arthritic diseases, though, is chronic inflammation. This inflammation, when left untreated, leads to debilitating pain and lack of mobility. Because these diseases mostly affect joints, people with arthritis often feel pain through their hands, knees, shoulders and wrists. \n\nSo, what does CBD have to do with arthritis and/or inflammation? [CBD shows massive potential in treating the root cause of inflammation](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-cbd-can-curb-chronic-inflammation/) and therefore the pain associated with arthritis. \n\nWhile trials on humans are scarce, [some are taking place right now](https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03693833). Meanwhile, many animal studies seem to confirm that CBD can greatly diminish arthritis pain. \n\nResearchers treated arthritic rats with transdermal CBD consistently for four days. They observed significantly reduced joint swelling. In another study, researchers at Cornell University found that [dogs with osteoarthritis pain saw significant pain reduction when treated with CBD oil](https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fvets.2018.00165/full). \n\n### 3 Ways to Layer CBD for Arthritis \n\n* **1. In the morning:** For all-day relief, start your day by layering a CBD edible and vaporizer. Include a CBD edible in your breakfast; this will take a while to kick in (typically 30 minutes to two hours) but will last for hours, bringing you relief through the day. While you wait for the edible to fully set in, use a CBD vape pen for more immediate, albeit somewhat short-lived, relief. \n* **2. Before bedtime:** Arthritic pain can stand in your way of a good night’s rest. For continuous relief while you sleep, layer a CBD capsule with a sublingual tincture. The tincture will travel through the mucous membranes in your mouth to the brain very quickly. Once the tincture wears off, the capsule will take effect and continue to deliver relief throughout the night. \n* **3. For acute pain:** Arthritis flare-ups are real, and they’re painful. In these cases, you could layer three CBD products: a CBD edible or capsule, tincture or vaporizer and a CBD topical. Take the edible or capsule first, as these will take more time to kick in, but will provide the longest-lasting relief. Then to deal with acute pain while the edible or capsule sets in, use a tincture or vaporizer for immediate effects. Finally, for really bad flare-ups, add a third layer of cannabis topical to the skin. But is it possible to have too much of a good thing? Taking too much CBD won’t cause lasting harm or death. But under certain circumstances, and for certain consumers, overloading on a favorite CBD-infused product can have some consequences.\n\n### CBD Is Generally Regarded as Safe\n\nCBD began making headlines for its [seemingly endless health benefits](https://hellomd.com/articles/whats-so-great-about-cannabidiol-or-cbd/) and effects on the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). Since then, numerous studies have looked at [whether CBD’s safe to consume](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-fast-will-cbd-work-for-me/) and at what levels, if any, it becomes toxic. \n\nThe research shows that although CBD can produce toxins when heated to very high temperatures, in general, this common cannabinoid can be considered nontoxic and safe to consume in any of the typical forms, such as oils, tinctures or edibles. There [haven’t been any recorded fatalities](https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/cannabidiol-cbd-what-we-know-and-what-we-dont-2018082414476) from consuming CBD. \n\nOn the other hand, opioid drugs and similar medications can provide pain relief like CBD can, but they can also cause unconsciousness and death. This is because they depress activity in the autonomic nervous system. This is the system that regulates breathing, heart rate and other functions that aren’t consciously regulated. \n\nBut the brainstem, which houses the autonomic nervous system, has virtually no cannabinoid receptors. This means cannabis compounds can’t severely depress these autonomic functions, like breathing, in the same way that opioids and other medications can.\n\n### How Much CBD Is Too Much?\n\nWhat constitutes too much CBD is highly variable, depending on factors like the kind of CBD product you’re taking and individual tolerances. \n\n* CBD-infused edibles can take longer to produce an effect since they have to be processed through the digestive system and metabolized in the liver before they become available in the body. Because this kind of product works more slowly, and because CBD-infused foods are actual foods, it’s tempting to treat them as such and end up taking more than you intended.\n\n* Tinctures, lozenges and oils taken orally become bioavailable relatively quickly since the mucus membranes in the mouth absorb them. Because they’re concentrated, a higher-than- normal dose of these can have fairly rapid effects. \n\n* Topical CBD products can also take effect relatively quickly, because they’re absorbed through the skin. But these products may contain less CBD than others do, so using more of them than usual may not have much of an effect. \n\nRELATED: [HOW FAST WILL CBD WORK FOR ME?](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-fast-will-cbd-work-for-me/)\n\nBesides the different types of CBD products, individual tolerances for CBD can vary widely. Some research has shown that this could be linked to the amount of endocannabinoid receptors a person naturally has. \n\nGenetic factors that affect the way both natural and cannabis-derived cannabinoids are processed in the body can also play a role. This can help explain why the same amount of CBD can affect two people very differently, and also why some people need to take large amounts of CBD to achieve a certain effect, while others can get similar results from a much smaller dose.\n\n### High Doses of CBD Can Cause Temporary Symptoms\n\nAlthough CBD is considered a safe and nontoxic substance, [this doesn’t mean that it can’t cause some physical reactions](https://cbdprofiler.com/can-you-take-too-much-cbd-yes-you-can/) when taken in larger amounts. \n\nPeople who overload on CBD have reported symptoms such as:\n\n* Diarrhea\n* Drowsiness\n* Stomach upset\n\nStill rarer effects include:\n\n* Dry mouth\n* Dizziness\n* Appetite changes\n* Anxiety\n\nBut these symptoms don’t last long, and they don’t appear to have lingering effects after CBD is processed out of the body.\n\n### Large Amounts of CBD Can Affect Other Medications\n\nThough you may not experience any of these symptoms, taking high doses of CBD can interfere with other medications you’re taking. This is because CBD can inhibit the activity of a liver enzyme called P450, which plays a major role in metabolizing a wide variety of prescription drugs. \n\nMany people are told not to consume grapefruit while on a course of certain medications for the same reason—an enzyme in grapefruit has the same effect on P450.\n\nWhen a large dose of CBD inhibits the activity of the liver’s enzyme P450, medications aren’t processed properly. This means that while CBD is active in the body, less of the medication becomes available to the system. \n\n### What to Do if You Take Too Much CBD\n\nFiguring out the right dose of CBD for your circumstances can be tricky. So it’s possible to end up accidentally taking too much, especially if you’re new to the world of cannabis.\n\nIf you find that you’ve taken more CBD than you’re used to, give it time to leave your system. The compound should work its way out of your body with no lasting effects. To counteract symptoms such as diarrhea or other gastric issues, consider over-the-counter remedies that resolve the discomfort. \n\n### Finding the Right Dose of CBD for You \n\nWhen you’re starting out taking CBD, it’s wise to begin with a small amount and gradually increase your dose until the effects feel right. \n\nThe same advice applies if you’re changing from one kind of CBD product to another. For example, if you’ve been taking CBD in edible form and switch to a tincture or oil, it may be a good idea to try small amounts at first, since these two forms of CBD are processed differently in the body.\n\nMany people are turning to CBD products for relief from the symptoms of major and minor health conditions, or just to stay healthy. And research reveals that under most circumstances, this potent cannabinoid compound is safe and nontoxic—even if you take too much.\n\nPhoto credit: elizabethmphl/Shutterstock.com\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? I know what you want to ask, and no, this granola won’t make you feel high—we have other medicinal goals in mind.\n\nLet me explain: This granola has the right amount of fat and carbs to give you enough energy to sustain you during your workout. It also has protein from hemp seeds to help build and maintain those strong muscles you’ve been working so hard on.\n\nThere are a few things that make this granola unique and healthy. I used ghee (which is clarified butter) instead of butter for a great, healthier alternative. And using the smoked sea salt instead of your normal sea salt adds another level of delicious flavor. \n\nUsing these two ingredients may be pretty adventurous for some eaters. However, this granola also contains the right amount of sweetness for any palette, by using maple syrup. Between the maple syrup and the smokiness from sea salt, this granola really delivers a tasty, sweet and savory experience. \n\n### These Granola Ingredients Pack a Healthy Punch \n\nThe hemp seeds in this recipe will not only provide you with protein, but they’ll also strike a good balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. \n\nIf you’re lacking fiber in your diet, the oats will definitely help you there, and it will also provide additional protein.\n\nI decided to add chia seeds to this recipe, because they contain healthful ingredients like:\n\n* Antioxidants\n* Protein\n* Vitamins A, B, E and D\n* Calcium\n* Potassium \n\nOne of my favorite chia seed benefits is their [ability to help maintain hydration](http://www.fleetfeetstlouis.com/news/chia-seeds), which is especially important during workouts or other strenuous activities.\n\nRELATED: [HOW CBD CAN HELP RELIEVE SORE MUSCLES](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-cbd-can-help-relieve-sore-muscles/)\n\nIf you’re convinced about trying this hemp CBD granola, but don’t want to eat it on its own, good news: There are so many ways to enjoy it. Consider having it as a topping on your favorite breakfast meal like:\n\n* Oatmeal\n* Yogurt\n* Quinoa cereal \n* Over some high-fiber fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, blackberries or raspberries\n\nAlthough I used a nonflavored CBD oil for this recipe, I urge you to get creative and try using other flavors of this superfood ingredient. You could go for something like a [lemon ginger or peppermint flavored CBD oil](https://www.hellolift.com/products/5bb54c9d15dd42feefa0a3eb/flavored-cbd-drops) for a twist. \n\nIf you’re looking for a gluten-free, soy-free and nut-free granola, this recipe has you covered. \n\nThis granola can also work well for people keeping their diet free of dairy, too, because ghee, contains no lactose or milk solids. But if you prefer something different, you can easily substitute the ghee with coconut oil. \n\n### Ingredients for Crunchy & Delicious Hemp CBD Granola \n\n8–10 servings\n\n* 4 cups gluten-free oats\n* 2 cups coconut flakes\n* 1 cup hemp seeds\n* 1/2 cup chia seeds\n* 3/4 cup coconut sugar\n* 1/2 cup maple syrup\n* 2 tbsp ghee (which is clarified butter)\n* 8 ml CBD oil\n* 1 tsp vanilla\n* 2 tsp cinnamon\n* 1/2 tsp nutmeg\n* Pinch of smoked sea salt to taste\n\n### How to Make Crunchy & Delicious Hemp CBD Granola \n\n1.\tPreheat oven to 325 degrees F.\n2.\tPlace all dry ingredients except the coconut sugar in a large bowl, and mix until uniform.\n3.\tIn a small saucepan, over low- to medium-heat, melt the ghee, add the maple syrup, coconut sugar, vanilla extract and CBD oil, and simmer for 2–3 minutes.\n4.\tPour the pan of liquid ingredients over the dry mixture and stir to coat evenly. Spread granola out evenly onto two parchment-lined baking pans. Make sure it’s evenly divided.\n5.\tBake for 10–15 minutes, then stir the mixture. \n6.\tPlace back in the oven and bake for another 5–10 minutes or until slightly golden. \n7.\tRemove from oven and let cool for about 10 minutes for a delicious crunchy granola. The longer it cools, the better the crunch. Store in an airtight container. \n\nI hope you get your crunch on with this delicious and nutritious hemp CBD granola, and enjoy it as much as I did.\n\nPhoto credit: [Tito Dudley aka Chef T](https://www.instagram.com/officialcheft/) \n\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3888888888888888,"src":"/static/a65815f6a5f21a11b8931ea976605cf8/14b42/c6d9c7ce13ba8d7174db3ddd9859938e.jpg","srcSet":"/static/a65815f6a5f21a11b8931ea976605cf8/f836f/c6d9c7ce13ba8d7174db3ddd9859938e.jpg 200w,\n/static/a65815f6a5f21a11b8931ea976605cf8/2244e/c6d9c7ce13ba8d7174db3ddd9859938e.jpg 400w,\n/static/a65815f6a5f21a11b8931ea976605cf8/14b42/c6d9c7ce13ba8d7174db3ddd9859938e.jpg 800w,\n/static/a65815f6a5f21a11b8931ea976605cf8/47498/c6d9c7ce13ba8d7174db3ddd9859938e.jpg 1200w,\n/static/a65815f6a5f21a11b8931ea976605cf8/0e329/c6d9c7ce13ba8d7174db3ddd9859938e.jpg 1600w,\n/static/a65815f6a5f21a11b8931ea976605cf8/d8255/c6d9c7ce13ba8d7174db3ddd9859938e.jpg 1920w","srcWebp":"/static/a65815f6a5f21a11b8931ea976605cf8/58556/c6d9c7ce13ba8d7174db3ddd9859938e.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/a65815f6a5f21a11b8931ea976605cf8/61e93/c6d9c7ce13ba8d7174db3ddd9859938e.webp 200w,\n/static/a65815f6a5f21a11b8931ea976605cf8/1f5c5/c6d9c7ce13ba8d7174db3ddd9859938e.webp 400w,\n/static/a65815f6a5f21a11b8931ea976605cf8/58556/c6d9c7ce13ba8d7174db3ddd9859938e.webp 800w,\n/static/a65815f6a5f21a11b8931ea976605cf8/99238/c6d9c7ce13ba8d7174db3ddd9859938e.webp 1200w,\n/static/a65815f6a5f21a11b8931ea976605cf8/7c22d/c6d9c7ce13ba8d7174db3ddd9859938e.webp 1600w,\n/static/a65815f6a5f21a11b8931ea976605cf8/25f09/c6d9c7ce13ba8d7174db3ddd9859938e.webp 1920w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2953-markdown","title":"5 Ways CBD Can Improve Your Senior Pet’s Life","slug":"5-ways-cbd-can-improve-your-senior-pets-life","content":"As with our human family members, seeing a pet age can make us very sad. With age often comes:\n\n* Joint pain \n* Mobility issues\n* Skin disorders\n* Nausea\n* Loss of eyesight\n\nThis can make a pet owner feel helpless and wondering what they can do. Well, it turns out cannabidiol (CBD) oil derived from hemp harnesses benefits that can help make your aging pet happier and healthier. \n\n### How Does CBD Help Pets?\n\nDogs and cats, just like humans and most mammals, have an endocannabinoid system (ECS). This system includes two types of receptors, CB1 and CB2. These receptors can be found all throughout the body, including in the brain and skin. The ECS plays a role in a long list of physiological processes, from appetite to pain perception, but it has one main goal: keeping the body in a balanced state, known as homeostasis. \n\nWhen ECS-equipped creatures ingest cannabinoids, molecules like CBD found in the cannabis plant, these compounds interact with the ECS receptors. They help send signals through the body to create physiological changes. \n\nYou’ve probably heard of people taking CBD to manage pain, anxiety and serious conditions like intractable epilepsy. But because animals have an ECS too, hemp CBD can work well for pets with these same conditions. \n\nAnd since CBD doesn’t produce the same head high like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can, you don’t have to worry about your pet feeling high if you give them hemp-derived CBD.\n\nHere are five instances where CBD may help alleviate some of the health conditions your senior pet may be dealing with. \n\nRELATED: [4 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD GIVE YOUR PET HEMP CBD](https://hellomd.com/articles/4-reasons-why-you-should-give-your-pet-hemp-cbd/) \n\n### 1. Hemp CBD Can Help Calm Your Pet’s Anxiety\n\nPets can spiral into an anxious panic due to a lot of things, like:\n\n* Separation anxiety\n* Boredom\n* Thunderstorms\n* Fireworks\n* Car rides\n* Vet visits\n\nTo fight anxiety, veterinarians typically prescribe similar antianxiety drugs that doctors give to humans. While these prescription drugs are effective, they can come with many serious side effects. \n\nResearch shows that CBD has great anxiolytic, or antianxiety, potential. In a summary of studies looking at CBD to treat anxiety, one found that [CBD, when applied to rats with induced anxiety, produced anxiolytic effects](http://www.scielo.br/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S1516-44462012000500008&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en). Perhaps more interestingly, the antianxiety effects of CBD are similar to the effectiveness of diazepam, a commonly prescribed antianxiety medication. \n\nSo, if your elderly hound or feline is experiencing more anxiety with age, hemp CBD could be a good option. If your fur baby is chronically anxious, a low dose of CBD oil in their food daily could help calm them down. But you can also give them [CBD oil](https://hellomd.com/articles/what-to-watch-out-for-when-buying-hemp-cbd-oil/) or even [hemp CBD dog treats](https://hellomd.com/articles/diy-recipe-peanut-butter-and-pumpkin-cbd-dog-treats/) just before a situation that produces acute anxiety, such as a trip to the vet. \n\nRELATED: [NOURISH TO FLOURISH: HOLISTIC HOUND HEMP OIL PRODUCTS](https://hellomd.com/articles/nourish-to-flourish-holistic-hound-hemp-oil-products/)\n\n### 2. CBD Can Ease Joint Pain & Mobility Issues \n\nAs pets age, joint pain and mobility issues are incredibly common. Some estimates say [one in four household pets experience arthritis](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/281442944_Canine_Osteoarthritis_and_Treatments_A_Review) at some point in their life. \n\nArthritis isn’t just one condition, but rather it encompasses a long list of diseases that negatively affect joints. The commonality among all of these diseases is chronic inflammation, which leads to:\n\n* Serious pain\n* Discomfort\n* Lack of mobility \n\nFor severe cases of arthritis, vets usually prescribe anti-inflammatory medication and pain pills. Unfortunately, these drugs can lead to other health issues like liver failure if used over long periods. CBD makes for a nice, natural option to treat joint pain and mobility problems without the possible negative side effects that prescriptions pills carry. \n\nThe research is pretty clear when it comes to CBD’s ability to reduce inflammation. Scientists found that transdermal CBD consistently applied for four days on rats with induced arthritis significantly reduced joint swelling. \n\nBut CBD not only shows potential for solving chronic inflammation that causes arthritic pain; it can also help manage the pain itself in case of a flare-up. Pet researchers at Cornell University found that [dogs with osteoarthritis pain experienced significant relief when given CBD oil orally](https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fvets.2018.00165/full). \n\nSo, if your elderly pooch or feline is having mobility problems, and you want to help reduce their inflammation, you can add CBD oil to their food regularly. You could even treat your pet to a nice massage with hemp CBD oil or cream on their legs, paws, hips and anywhere you think they need extra pain relief. \n\n### 3. Give Your Pet Hemp CBD to Reduce Nausea \n\nIs your pet avoiding meals? Is fido eating grass every time you go for a walk? Have you noticed a lot of extra drooling? These are all signs that your pet is feeling nauseous. \n\nNausea can be brought on by all sorts of things, including: \n\n* Eating something bad\n* Stress\n* A viral or bacterial infection\n* Inflammatory bowel disease\n* Cancer\n\nNausea usually goes away within a few days. To help the nausea pass, most pet owners will feed their furry friend a temporary bland diet, perhaps with some pureed pumpkin or ginger mixed in. \n\nSadly, as pets get older, stomach issues can start to arise more often. This could be a result of a medication’s side effects or a lowered immune system that makes them more susceptible to viral infections. \n\nIf this is the cas, CBD oil could help. A 2012 study in the _British Journal of Pharmacology_ looked into whether CBD could be a treatment for nausea in rats. According to the study, [CB1 and CB2 receptors in a pet’s ECS are found at locations in the brain and gastrointestinal tract that are involved in nausea](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3423241/). \n\n\n### 4. Add CBD Oil to Your Pet’s Food to Combat Itchiness & Skin Conditions\n\nSo many things can cause your pet to start itching, such as: \n\n* Diet\n* Pet dander\n* Food allergies\n* Pests\n* Environmental factors \n\nWhile skin issues can be brought on by many external reasons, what happens on the inside is the same across the board: an overactive immune system. \n\nSkin allergies are very common and can lead your pooch or kitty to chew, lick and scratch their skin incessantly. If this behavior continues, it can cause injury and damage to the skin. \n\nTo fight these skin issues, veterinarians usually suggest:\n\n* Corticosteroids\n* Allergy medications\n* Vaccines\n* Topical treatments like a specialty shampoo and conditioner\n\nBut, there are [ECS receptors in the dominant type of skin cells](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2757311/) that make up the outer layer of mammalian skin. It’s thought that CBD interacts with these receptors in the skin to help clear up skin conditions. \n\nA study from the department of pharmaceutical chemistry at the University of Kuopio, Finland looked at hemp CBD oil’s ability to treat atopic dermatitis. The study found that [the fatty acids found in full-spectrum hemp CBD oil increase the necessary level of fatty acids](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16019622) for healthy skin. \n\nThe same logic applies to giving your pet fish oil supplements to help their coat and skin thrive. Additionally, a 2013 study found that [CBD and other cannabinoids boost healthy skin cell production](https://bpspubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/bph.12309). So, if you notice your pet is scratching more than usual, try giving them a daily dose of CBD oil for a few weeks, then reassessing if it’s helped them. \n\n### 5. Dietary CBD Can Help Improve Eyesight & Alleviate Glaucoma Symptoms\n\nHuman eyes are pretty similar to other mammals’ eyes, including that of our pets. Light travels into the eye through the cornea, then moves through the lens and the pupil where the light is focused on the retina. The retina then passes that visual information to the brain via the optic nerve. \n\nGlaucoma is a common eye condition in pets and humans. It’s when pressure builds up on the eye, eventually damaging the optic nerve—meaning the brain never receives any of the necessary visual information. \n\nThere’s no cure for glaucoma, but there are treatments that reduce pain and drain excess fluid that add to ocular pressure. The earliest study looking at [CBD as a treatment for glaucoma](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1772142/) dates back to 1971. While admittedly dated, the study found that CBD resulted in a 30% reduction of intraocular pressure. \n\nIn 1984, a study showed CBD and another cannabinoid, cannabigerol (CBG), successfully reduced intraocular pressure in cats when they consumed the cannabinoids consistently. \n\nThough it may be tempting to administer the CBD oil directly to your pet’s eyes, this won’t help improve their eyesight and could even do damage. Stick with the ingested methods of hemp CBD here—either in oil drizzled over food or in the form of CBD treats. It may take some time for the CBD to build up in your pet’s system, so give it a few weeks or even months of monitoring to see if your pet’s eyesight has improved. \n\nIt’s hard to watch your beloved furry companion go through the aging process. What’s encouraging is that hemp CBD shows promise in treating many of the conditions elderly pets face. \n\nPhoto credit: tinyowl7/Shutterstock.com \n\nIf you want to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? Consumers say they do—and research on the way CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) suggests that this abundant cannabinoid can affect hair follicles in different ways. \n\n### How Hair Works\n\nHair is a major part of the [complex ecosystem of the skin](https://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/picture-of-the-hair#2) and is made of a tough protein called keratin. A hair follicle anchors each individual hair to the skin. At the base of each follicle is an organ called the hair bulb, where living cells grow and divide to build the hair shaft.\n\nAs these cells accumulate, they push the hair shaft out of the follicle and through the surface of the skin. Blood vessels feed the cells in the hair bulb with oxygen, hormones and other nutrients that support hair growth.\n\nHair doesn’t grow at a consistent rate. Many factors can affect the process, including genetics, age and overall health. But in general, normal hair growth happens in three distinct stages:\n\n1. **Anagen, or the growth stage.** Each hair spends several years in this stage of growth, adding length at about half an inch a month, or about six inches per year.\n\n2. **Catagen, a transitional stage.** This is when hair growth starts to slow down over a period of weeks, and the hair follicle begins to shrink.\n\n3. **Telogen, the end stage of hair growth.** Over several weeks or months, the hair stops growing. This old hair detaches from the hair follicle and falls painlessly out. Then a new hair begins to grow in the follicle, starting the process all over again. \n\nMany things can interrupt this cycle. Because skin and blood vessels support and nourish hair follicles, things that affect these systems can also affect hair growth. Factors that can weaken hair follicles and make it more likely for hair to grow slowly or fall out include:\n\n* Poor nutrition\n* Hormone fluctuations, like during pregnancy\n* Acute stress \n\nIn some people, genetic factors that affect the production of hormones called androgens can cause hair follicles to fail. This is what causes the form of alopecia known as pattern baldness, which affects otherwise healthy men (and sometimes women). \n\n### How Does CBD Help With Hair Health?\n\nHowever hair happens to behave, hair follicles are part of the skin—an often-overlooked organ despite it being the largest organ in the body. The skin provides protection against external factors, but it’s also a functioning organic system all its own, with neuronal networks and immune responses. \n\n[The skin is also rich in ECS receptors](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2757311). The ECS is a network of receptor cells that activate in response to both natural endocannabinoids the body produces and cannabinoids from outside sources like the _Cannabis sativa_ plant. \n\nHair follicles have an endocannabinoid signaling system based on the ECS receptor CB1 that manages hair growth in both negative and positive ways. This means that cannabinoids from internal and external sources can affect the activity of hair follicles. And new research shows\nthat [hair follicles actually produce two endocannabinoids, anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG)](https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/ad20/e098620b7d73c37426b4bad66b06514207f7.pdf). So, the information from these studies reveals that cannabinoids, including CBD, heavily influence the behavior of hair follicles.\n\nCBD has documented properties for boosting the immune system, fighting infections and regulating many of the body’s subsystems. This is why [it can help support healthy skin and hair](https://marijuanapatients.org/alopecia/). Since hair is a part of the skin’s ecosystem, all of the reasons CBD is good for the skin can also apply to hair. \n\nRELATED: [OH MY AGING SKIN: HOW CBD CAN HELP](https://hellomd.com/articles/oh-my-aging-skin-how-cbd-can-help/)\n\nCBD oil contains all 21 known amino acids. These amino acids are the building blocks of protein. This means CBD can support the buildup of collagen and elastin in hair shafts. This buildup can make hair stronger and appear thicker.\n\nCBD can also help regulate the glands in the skin that produce sebum, or oil, which can keep hair from being either too dry or too oily. CBD can also indirectly support healthy hair by relieving other conditions that contribute to hair problems:\n\nFor example, anxiety can contribute to thinning or unhealthy hair. CBD can relieve anxiety, and this can help hair look healthier. CBD also has anti-inflammatory and antibiotic properties, so it can help reduce inflammation and eliminate infections that can contribute to unhealthy hair. \n\n### How to Use CBD for Your Hair\n\nYou can use CBD in a variety of ways to boost hair health. You can ingest it in the form of edibles, tinctures or oils, which can be helpful in treating health conditions that cause hair problems. \n\nYou can also apply CBD topically in creams, ointments and salves, so that it’s absorbed directly into the skin. And cannabis-infused shampoos can deliver CBD directly to the scalp, an area of the skin that’s usually rich in hair follicles. \n\nWhen choosing CBD products, it’s important to read labels and buy only from reputable sources. CBD isn’t closely regulated, so some products can contain harmful chemicals or may not contain much CBD at all. \n\nBe sure that CBD is high on the ingredient list of a product you’re interested in. Also, make sure that other ingredients in the product, such as carrier oils or flavorings, are safe to use and free of harmful additives. This way, you can make sure you’re using high-quality CBD products to tackle the root cause of your bad hair days. \n\nPhoto credit: TORWAISTUDIO/Shutterstock.com\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start?
