These reactions begin in our brain as part of our bodies’ wired fear response. When we sense danger, a signal is sent to the amygdala. This almond-shaped cluster of neurons in our forebrains serves as the alert center for our bodies and primes us to either face the threat in front of us or run away from it. \n\nOnce danger subsides, signals to the amygdala relax, and our bodies return to a normal, less-heightened state. While we know a lot about what goes into triggering our fear response, we know a lot less about how to turn it off. And this is important because the inability to turn off inappropriate fear responses is associated with conditions like PTSD, phobias, and other anxiety-related disorders.\n\nThis is where cannabis comes into the picture: It turns out that [cannabidiol](https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/cannabidiol-cbd-what-we-know-and-what-we-dont-2018082414476) (CBD)—and possibly [tetrahydrocannabinol](https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/neuroscience/tetrahydrocannabinol) (THC)—may be able to affect our bodies’ fear response. This makes sense when we think of the anecdotal evidence that exists for cannabis and various mood disorders. This property could have medical applications, and research is already underway to better understand how cannabis’s components can be used to treat [anxiety-related disorders](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/anxiety/symptoms-causes/syc-20350961). \n\n![Untitledval102.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval102_5ec448864c.png)\n\n### The Endocannabinoid System Is Part of Our Fear Response \n\nThose of you familiar with cannabis science know a little about the [endocannabinoid system](https://hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system), the network of receptors located throughout the body that cannabis acts on to bring about its therapeutic effects. \n\nThe endocannabinoid system is made up of receptors, endocannabinoids, and enzymes. In the body, endocannabinoids are made when they’re needed; they attach to receptors, and once they’ve served their purpose, they’re broken down by enzymes. These endocannabinoids are similar to the cannabinoids found in cannabis, like THC. \n\nResearchers think that CB1, one of the receptors in this system, is key to controlling our fear response. In fact, they’ve observed that [mice without CB1 receptors have trouble controlling their fear](http://www.jneurosci.org/content/26/25/6677.full). \n\nStudies have also found that activating this receptor—either naturally via the body’s own cannabinoids or those found in cannabis—is key to turning off the fear response. Normally, [anandamide](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41401-018-0075-x), an endocannabinoid, attaches to CB1. Once it’s served its purpose, it’s broken down by an enzyme known as fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH). \n\nKnowing all of the above, researchers decided to see what would happen if they turned off FAAH. In other words, they prevented FAAH from breaking down anandamide in mice. They found that the [mice recovered from fear faster](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3549323/) and that these actions were traceable all the way back to the amygdala. \n\nAn older study in 2009 by the same researchers could offer more insight on FAAH. In some folks, the FAAH enzyme is more active, and in others, the enzyme is less active. The researchers think that this activity is due to a difference in DNA. In the study, those whose DNA was coded for less active FAAH were able to overcome their fear response [more quickly](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3215587/). \n\nIn other words, because FAAH was less active, there was more anandamide in their system available to attach to CB1 receptors, making it easier for these people to override their fear response—at least in theory. \n\n![Untitledval99.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval99_677b4c22c0.png)\n\n### THC & CBD Also Affect the Fear Response \n\nSo, what does this all have to do with cannabis? Well, as it turns out, THC has a similar structure to anandamide, and it often attaches to the CB1 receptor. \n\nAdditionally, some studies suggest CBD can prevent the FAAH enzyme from breaking down anandamide. Both of these abilities suggest that these cannabis components could help folks whose brains have a hard time shutting down inappropriate fear responses. \n\nThe effects of both THC and CBD on fear response have been studied. So far, research has shown that THC may [encourage the brain](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3445738/) to shut down learned fear responses in humans. And more recent studies in people suggest that [it may make the process of overcoming fear easier](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0006322318309971). \n\nBecause CBD shows a lot of promise in the treatment of anxiety-related disorders, a lot of preclinical research has been done on the topic. Collectively, this research suggests that [CBD can not only help stop the body’s fear response, it can also blunt the overall bodily reaction to fear](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5121237/pdf/fphar-07-00454.pdf) and the way the brain remembers past fear-inducing events. \n\nThese findings make CBD seem like a good additional option to traditional therapies for anxiety-related disorders because it may have lasting positive effects. \n\nSo far, the studies done on THC and CBD are promising, but we still don’t have a full grasp of the mechanism behind these positive outcomes. CB1 and FAAH are likely at play, but there are other parts of the endocannabinoid system that could be responsible as well: A recent study in _Biological Psychiatry_ found that people with PTSD have [elevated levels of 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), another endocannabinoid,](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0006322318301719) in their brains, but their FAAH and anandamide levels were normal. \n\nResults like this highlight how cannabis science is always changing. Overall, it’s obvious that more research is needed. But given that anxiety and anxiety-related disorders are the most common form of mental illness in the U.S., there are many people who can’t afford to wait for that research to be more conclusive. This is why cannabis communities like HelloMD—where people can share their experiences and offer support—are helpful and important. \n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. This natural cannabinoid is found in the cannabis plant. And while it won’t get you high, it can help calm an anxious mind and body.\n\nCould CBD be the right option for you? We all deal with a normal amount of anxiety throughout our lives. But for some, anxiety can become so extreme that it’s detrimental to their ability to function.\n\nMore than 30% of Americans will suffer from an anxiety disorder during their lifetime. And [over 19% of people suffer with one currently](https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/statistics/prevalence/any-anxiety-disorder-among-adults.shtml). \n\nAnxiety disorders comprise a wide range of conditions including :\n\n* Panic disorder\n* Generalized anxiety disorder\n* Agoraphobia\n* Specific phobia\n* Social anxiety disorder\n* PTSD\n* Obsessive-compulsive disorder\n* Separation anxiety disorder \n\nThese conditions differ based on the objects or situations that induce anxiety, but have one feature in common—excessive anxiety, and the physical and behavioral disturbances that go along with it. \n\nAnxiety disorders can be mild or severe, but they all [interfere with daily activities like work, school and relationships](https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/anxiety-disorders/index.shtml#part_145336)—and can cause a variety of side effects. \n\nThose with anxiety may experience:\n\n* Restlessness \n* Fatigue \n* Difficulty concentrating\n* Irritability\n* Muscle tension\n* Uncontrollable feelings of worry\n* Sleep problems \n* Heart palpitations\n* Sweating\n* Trembling or shaking\n* Shortness of breath\n\nRELATED: [HOW CBD CAN RELIEVE SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-cbd-can-relieve-symptoms-of-depression/)\n\nAnxiety disorders are usually treated with a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy or prescriptions like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or benzodiazepine medications. While therapy is usually a helpful option, unfortunately, [many patients have issues with the prescription medications](https://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/drugs-and-treatments/sleeping-pills-and-minor-tranquillisers/side-effects-of-benzodiazepines/). Both medication types can leave patients feeling emotionally numb and can be highly addictive. While they sometimes help at first, patients often adjust and need increasingly higher doses to keep getting the positive effects. \n\n![Untitledval95.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval95_82a8f44010.png)\n\n### CBD Can Help Ease Anxiety \n\nThankfully, CBD can help with anxious situations. The science is still limited due to research restrictions on cannabis. But preliminary data and patient reports suggest big potential for CBD as an [anxiety-reducing alternative](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs13311-015-0387-1) to prescription medications.\n\nScientists have been looking at CBD’s anxiety-reducing potential for a while now, and say that we have good reason to believe [CBD can help](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs13311-015-0387-1). \n\nStudies show that CBD can actively reduce anxiety in humans. One 2011 study demonstrated this by testing subjects’ anxiety (and related factors) during [public speaking](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3079847/). Public speaking is well known as the most common fear in humans—right above death—so it’s a great test for anxiety. \n\nIt turns out CBD made a big impact for those who took it right before speaking in front of audience. Compared to those who took nothing before the speech, those using CBD experienced significantly reduced anxiety as well as less cognitive impairment, discomfort in their speech, and feelings of anticipatory alertness. \nThis confirmed earlier studies, which had found [similar results for both humans](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20829306) and [animals](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23298518). \n\nScientist believe that CBD is so effective at combating anxiety, because of the way it interacts with serotonin receptors in the brain. While the mechanism isn’t fully understood, scientists believe that anxiety and depression may be caused (at least in part) by a [lack of available serotonin](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/7622823/). At the very least, when more serotonin is available, anxiety and depression tend to ease up. \n\nThis is why SSRIs can help reduce depression and anxiety. SSRIs block the reabsorption of serotonin in the brain, making it more available in the synaptic space and boosting serotonin signaling. \n\nCBD has something in common with SSRIs. CBD also [boosts serotonin signaling](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26711860) through enhancing the serotonin receptor 5-HT1A. \n\nIn fact, CBD may have a leg up on SSRIs. Researchers noted that the antidepressant and anti-anxiety effects of CBD work much faster than SSRIs do, because they’re affecting the serotonin more quickly. \n\nAdditionally, [CBD has been rated by the World Health Organization](http://www.who.int/medicines/access/controlled-substances/5.2_CBD.pdf). as safe, generally well-tolerated and without potential for abuse or dependence.\n \nResearch also shows that CBD, like SSRIs, can [help regenerate neurons in the hippocampus](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23298518). This [promotion of neurogenesis](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3648779/) is important as evidence suggests that impaired neuronal plasticity may be a contributor to [suicidal behavior](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3022308/). \n\n![Untitledval96.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval96_e9ac685ab0.png)\n\n### Tips for Taking CBD to Help Ease Anxiety\n\nThinking about taking CBD for your own anxiety? There are a few things to consider. \n\nFirst, when it comes to consumption method, there are some great options to choose from. [Vaporizers](https://hellomd.com/tag/vaporizer/) and [sublingual options](https://hellomd.com/tag/tincture/) work great when you need anxiety relief quickly. These rapid-onset options will start working within minutes and stay with you for a few hours, making them perfect for when you need immediate relief. \n\n[Edibles](https://hellomd.com/articles/essentials-about-edibles-that-you-need-to-know) can also be very helpful for managing anxiety. This option stays in your system longer, but will take an hour or two to start working. For this reason, edibles are better suited for pre-emptively maintaining a sense of calm on a daily basis than they are for reducing anxiety when it hits. \n\nFinding a method may be easy, but when it comes to dosing, things can get complicated. “I think one of the hardest thing for people is going to be finding the perfect dose,” explains Jessica Tonani, co-founder of [Basic Jane, the only cannabis company in the U.S. that holds a license to research CBD](https://basicjane.com). “There is a bit of a Goldilocks scenario going on here, where low levels and high levels of CBD show no efficacy, but the mid-dose is perfect,” Jessica says.\n\nIn other words, when it comes to anxiety, CBD is dose-dependent. Research shows that too little or too much CBD doesn’t help, but something in the middle works well. \n\nFor example, in a 2018 study replicating the previous research on [anxiety levels during public speaking](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30328956), researchers found that 150 mg and 600 mg doses of CBD were ineffective at reducing anxiety compared to the placebo. But 300 mg doses lowered anxiety significantly. \n\nStill, it’s important to note 300 mg is a very high dose when compared to the average dose in CBD products, so folks may need relatively high doses to achieve anxiety relief. The ideal dose can vary from person to person, so to find the best CBD dose for you, start low and slowly increase your dose each time you use it until you’ve found a helpful amount for your needs. \n\nA final piece of advice is to check with your doctor before you begin a CBD regimen. “CBD can affect the metabolism of other drugs, and so it might mean you have to modify the amount of other medications you take,” cautions Jessica. “This is something you can work with your physician on.”\n\nIf you have questions about CBD, [ask them](https://hellomd.com/questions-and-answers/) and our community will answer.\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3793103448275863,"src":"/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/14b42/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.jpg","srcSet":"/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/f836f/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.jpg 200w,\n/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/2244e/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.jpg 400w,\n/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/14b42/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.jpg 800w,\n/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/47498/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.jpg 1200w,\n/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/0e329/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.jpg 1600w,\n/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/db203/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.jpg 3642w","srcWebp":"/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/58556/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/61e93/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.webp 200w,\n/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/1f5c5/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.webp 400w,\n/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/58556/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.webp 800w,\n/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/99238/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.webp 1200w,\n/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/7c22d/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.webp 1600w,\n/static/2bc7bcac803c36c1311ad7be79a253da/62b7a/c4179ed00ebb544e81e85747e862bb70.webp 3642w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3115-markdown","title":"Can Marijuana Help With Chronic Pain, Anxiety & Insomnia?","slug":"can-marijuana-help-with-chronic-pain-anxiety-and-insomnia","content":"The world is a turbulent place. Everywhere we turn, there's another paradigm-shifting event requiring new levels of emotional resilience. From the COVID pandemic to intense economic pressures and an upcoming political election, it's a delicate balance to manage our emotional and physical wellbeing.\n\nThese back-to-back events can affect the way you are dealing with anxiety and how much rest may be able to get. If chronic pain is an issue, the levels of stress and cortisol in your system may be triggering flare-ups. Fortunately, cannabis is known to treat various symptoms, whether they be physical, emotional, or psychological. \n\nIncorporating marijuana into your lifestyle has several benefits, whether it's THC or CBD. These powerful cannabinoids are often used as an alternative or complementary treatment for various conditions such as [anxiety](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4604171/), insomnia and chronic pain.\n\n![Untitledval99.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval99_677b4c22c0.png)\n\n### THC & CBD\n\n[Tetrahydrocannabinol](https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/neuroscience/tetrahydrocannabinol) (THC) is commonly known for its psychotropic effects which lead to the feeling of being \"high.\" THC is also linked to improved mood, decreased feelings of stress, and significant pain relief for many people. Recent studies, including the one conducted by [HelloMD and UC Berkeley](https://hellomd.com/blogs/articles/hellomd-and-uc-berkeley-release-study-on-cannabis-use-as-a-substitute-for-opioid-and-non-opioid-based-pain-medication), indicate that cannabis with THC offers better pain relief than traditional pharmaceuticals.\n\n[Cannabidiol](https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/cannabidiol-cbd-what-we-know-and-what-we-dont-2018082414476) (CBD) interacts with the [endocannabinoid system](https://hellomd.com/blogs/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system?_pos=1&_sid=412fbfff4&_ss=r) in a similar way to THC, without the intoxicating effects. CBD is best known for its therapeutic qualities for quelling anxiety, as well as providing pain relief. Studies have shown that it may help reduce seizures related to epilepsy, inflammatory bowel disease/irritable bowel syndrome, and depression. CBD can also be helpful when it comes to inflammation, stress, and sleep problems. \n\nThose are just a few of the leading reasons people consume cannabis. Below we dive into how cannabis can help with symptom relief for chronic pain, anxiety, and insomnia.\n\n![Untitledval97.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval97_60116a8aa4.png)\n\n### Anxiety\n\nIn studies, CBD has shown promise in the [treatment of anxiety disorders](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s13311-015-0387-1?handl_url=https://successtms.com/blog/new-treatments-for-depression) such as generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. [CBD activates and enhances specific serotonin receptors](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/7622823/) in the brain leading to reduced feelings of anxiety and stress. For some, CBD may be able to replace or augment traditional pharmaceuticals consumed for acute anxiety.\n\nCBD is also known to [reduce feelings of anxiety following a stressful event](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2697769/), such as public speaking. Other lifestyle practices to consider for anxiety reduction are meditation and breathwork. Regularly practicing mindfulness meditation and breathwork, such as box breathing, have shown to have a positive effect on reducing anxiety and stress levels. \n\nTHC can also be useful for reducing anxiety, but lower doses are more effective at helping with symptoms. High doses of THC for some people may exacerbate existing feelings anxiety and stress. Remarkably, CBD is an antidote to THC-induced anxiety or paranoia. If you happen to overindulge with THC, try ingesting CBD to counteract the negative effects you may feel from being to \"high.\"\n\nWe suggest if you're trying THC for the first time, start at a very low dose of 1-2mg for an edible, or an equally balanced strain of THC to CBD, if vaping or smoking. \n\n![Untitledval98.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval98_072b56c36f.png)\n\n### Chronic Pain\n\nConsuming cannabis is a more natural way to [deal with chronic pain.](https://hellomd.com/blogs/articles/8-natural-ways-to-combat-chronic-pain) Marijuana with THC, CBD, or a combination of both, is consumed commonly by: \n\n- Smoking flower or vaping\n- Orally via gel caps\n- Sublingually via a tincture\n- Applied topically directly to the area of discomfort\n- \nThough the cannabinoids CBD and THC can be used independently, there is evidence suggesting that [CBD may enhance THC's pain-relieving properties](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19896326/). CBD may be most effective when it comes to treating neuropathic pain, which is often related to inflammation. People seek out cannabis to treat symptoms for common ailments such as migraines/headaches, muscle cramping and fibromyalgia. Other conditions that may respond well to the pain-relieving properties within cannabis are arthritis or autoimmune diseases such as Crohn's. \n\nIt's suggested that THC may help modulate pain by indirectly [increasing opioid receptor activation](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4201274/). A recent study found that high-[THC cannabis could offer better pain relief](https://www.analyticalcannabis.com/articles/high-thc-cannabis-offers-better-pain-relief-than-opioids-study-finds-311862) than opioids and could be up to twenty times more effective. Conclusion: this is great news for anyone struggling to find an effective way to cope with chronic pain instead of opiates, which can be highly addictive. \n\n![Untitledval100.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval100_dd0a4c606c.png)\n\n### Insomnia\n\nIf you have problems falling or staying asleep, you understand how an inadequate slumber negatively impacts daily life. In many instances, insomnia is related to poor sleep habits such as irregular sleep times, mood disorders like depression or anxiety, lack of exercise, chronic illness, or even certain medications. \n\nThough CBD is known to help with some of the common causes which could lead to insomnia, it may not always be the best choice. Studies have shown that a potential side effect of too much CBD is that it may create a state of wakefulness. Studies indicate that smaller amounts of THC may actually help restore your body's natural cycle [by inducing sleep](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15118485). For the right person, THC can help you to fall asleep and stay asleep.\n\nIf trying THC for sleep, look for Indica-dominant strains, which will help the body relax. Edibles are a great choice for sleep in that they last anywhere from 4-6 hours.\n\n![Untitledval101.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval101_4e7fb3376c.png)\n\n### What's Best for You\n\nOf course, as with all treatments, it's important to educate yourself on what works best for you. [Understanding dosage](https://hellomd.com/blogs/questions-answers/the-right-dosage-of-cbd?_pos=2&_sid=39ccab7e0&_ss=r), your preferred method of consumption or application, and your specific reason for including THC or CBD in your health and wellness routine is necessary to have the best results. \n\nTaking a slow and steady approach to exploring how cannabis fits into your life will help you tailor your experience. It may also prevent you from wasting time and money on cannabis products that may not be suitable for you. It's true that experimenting with cannabis requires a measure of patience to find the right solution. Stay focused on your goals while trying various options whether it be for chronic pain, anxiety, or a better night's sleep. \n\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.5037593984962405,"src":"/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/ee604/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.png","srcSet":"/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/69585/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.png 200w,\n/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/497c6/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.png 400w,\n/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/ee604/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.png 800w,\n/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/f3583/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.png 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/58556/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/61e93/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.webp 200w,\n/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/1f5c5/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.webp 400w,\n/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/58556/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.webp 800w,\n/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/99238/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3862-markdown","title":"The Best Cannabis Gummy for a Calm Effect - the Sparkling Strawberry Rose Gummies by Garden Society","slug":"the-best-cannabis-gummy-for-a-calm-effect-the-sparkling-strawberry-rose-gummies-by-garden-society","content":"Whatever the season, I often daydream that I'm sitting on a white beach, sand between my toes, while my cares and worries wash away with the tide. She felt it was a natural next step to move into the cannabis industry. With a background steeped in deep science she quickly became fluent in cannabis science and production. Her Co-Founder, Karli Warner, is also from the wine industry. Karli matches Erin's passion for marijuana and brings rich experience with public relations and marketing to the company. \n\nThe two women have cut serious business chops, leading their company through the rocky transition to recreational cannabis in California and not only surviving but thriving. Each gummy contains 1mg of THC and 5mg of CBD, a nice ratio for anyone who might want to consume cannabis during a regular day. I noted the \"rapid effect\" wording in the upper left-hand corner of the package, which I don't often think of when [consuming edibles](https://hellomd.com/articles/what-to-know-about-edibles-infused-with-cannabis). Tearing open the bag, I grabbed a single, rose-colored gummy. I popped the rosé gummy in my mouth and enoyed the juicy flavors of strawberry, with a fruity undertone of sparkling rosé . In about 15 minutes I began to feel a calming effect wash over me. Within 30 minutes (and another gummy!), I felt significantly more relaxed. My muscles were loose, and I could feel myself vibrating to a slower, more calming beat. \n\nI opened my book and spent the afternoon reading, and I hadn't read so intently in some time. \n\nIf you're feeling lethargic, less intentional in daily tasks, or simply looking to escape for an afternoon — I would highly recommend trying **Garden Society's Rosé Gummies**. The World Health Organization estimates that about one in thirteen people will experience an anxiety disorder worldwide. The upheavals and uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic are creating new waves of anxiety that can disrupt daily life and contribute to various health conditions. Treatments for anxiety include lifestyle changes, talk therapy, and an array of medications, which can cause numerous side effects. \n\n But a growing body of research reveals that cannabis, especially the cannabinoid compound cannabidiol, or CBD, can work naturally with the body’s systems to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. \n\n![Medical marijuana helps calm anxiety](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_19_at_2_56_45_PM_74f544151d.png)\n\nNow, adults in New York can choose from a variety of new cannabis products for combating anxiety and reducing the effects of stress. Here’s a look at the five best choices from New York’s legal cannabis dispensaries.\n\n### What Causes Anxiety?\nEveryone [experiences anxiety](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/anxiety/symptoms-causes/syc-20350961) at some time, with symptoms that can range from mild “butterflies in the stomach” to severe and crippling panic attacks. \n\n![Anxiety can be crippling - but medical marijuana may help](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_19_at_2_58_44_PM_d9687fad18.png)\n\nIn many cases, anxiety is situational, caused by things like speaking in public or taking an important test, and it passes once circumstances change. Certain medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, or asthma can also cause anxiety symptoms. So can some medications.\n\nBut for many people, anxiety is constant and crippling, causing endless worry, intrusive thoughts, or bursts of panic that interfere with daily life in many ways. Mild cases of situational anxiety can often be resolved by simple strategies such as conscious breathing or repeating an affirmation. But, anxiety disorders might need more aggressive treatment such as therapy or medication, or a combination of both. Anxiety can affect both the mind and the body. Common symptoms include:\n\n- Feeling tense, restless or uneasy\n- Trouble falling or staying asleep\n- Fatigue or weakness\n- Sweating or trembling\n- Problems with concentration and memory\n- Gastrointestinal problems\n- Hyper focusing on worrying thoughts\n- Rapid heartbeat or rapid breathing\n- A persistent sense of imminent doom or catastrophe\n \nBecause anxiety takes many forms and has many different causes, treatments vary widely, ranging from diet and lifestyle changes to medical management with medications like antidepressants, sedatives, or anti-anxiety drugs. But now, studies show that [cannabis can provide effective relief from anxiety](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-for-anxiety-and-stress-disorders), whether it’s a short episode of worry or a chronic condition that affects all areas of life. \n\n### Medical Marijuana Eases Anxiety Naturally\n\n![CBD can help boost metabolism and burn bad fat cells](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_12_at_1_37_32_PM_4ea3fdd74a.png)\n\nMany people use cannabis to relax and enjoy social situations. Now, considerable research supports what these casual users already know: cannabis can help to reduce stress and boost positive feelings. That’s because of the [unique interactions](https://hellomd.com/articles/understanding-how-cbd-can-calm-your-anxiety) between the many compounds in the cannabis plant and one of the body’s largest regulatory systems: the endocannabinoid system, or ECS.\n\nThis system consists of an extensive network of cell receptors found throughout the body and brain, which respond to naturally produced cannabinoid chemicals and the cannabinoid compounds found in cannabis and a few other plants. Cannabis contains over a hundred unique compounds, including the well-known psychoactive THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD (cannabidiol) and THCV (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabivarin). \n\n![The endocannabinoid system ](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_19_at_3_01_15_PM_9e64544517.png)\n\nWhen medical marijuana is smoked, vaped, or consumed in any other way, it activates receptors in the brain and central nervous system which moderate arousal and mood. In this way, weed helps to dampen excitation, reduce the expression of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, and support the production of calming hormones like serotonin and dopamine. In that case, you're joining a group of [over 36 million Americans who suffer the same annually](https://americanmigrainefoundation.org/resource-library/migraine-where-we-are-and-where-we-are-going/).\n\nMigraines are often a genetic condition, but many factors over one's lifetime affect how frequent and severe migraines can be. [The Mayo Clinic](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/migraine-headache/in-depth/migraines/art-20047242) recommends hot or cold compresses, Tylenol, and small amounts of caffeine to help stave off dreaded migraine symptoms. \n\nIf you experience migraines, cannabis is another option for relief and even prevention of these severe headaches. \n\n### How Marijuana Helps with Migraines\n\n![THCV has been known to help with weight loss](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_14_at_2_09_49_PM_407e8004f1.png)\n\nWhile more research is still needed to solidify the argument that cannabis can prevent or help with migraine symptoms, some promising studies are out there. [One study from the University of Colorado](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26749285/) found that Migraine headache frequency decreased from 10.4 to 4.6 headaches per month with the use of medical marijuana.\n\n### How Does Cannabis Help with Migraines?\n\n[Cannabis can decrease the body's stress response](https://hellomd.com/articles/treating-migraines-with-marijuana-dr-patricia-frye) in the pituitary-adrenal axis and interrupt specific biochemical changes. \n\nCBD is especially helpful in alleviating neurogenic pain due to its potent anti-inflammatory properties.\n\nTHC also relieves pain by shutting down signaling within pain receptors. THC may also contribute to migraine pain relief by raising serotonin levels, similar to certain antidepressants, such as [amitriptyline](https://www.webmd.com/drugs/2/drug-8611/amitriptyline-oral/details). \n\nYou can use CBD or THC to both prevent and alleviate migraine pain. One study [showed that rodents injected with CBD](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/cbd-oil-for-weight-loss#weight-loss) experienced significant weight loss. In another study, CBD reduced appetite in rats more than that of other cannabinoids, including cannabigerol (CBG) and cannabinol (CBN).\n\n![CBD can help boost metabolism and burn bad fat cells](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_12_at_1_37_32_PM_4ea3fdd74a.png)\n\nA more recent study (not on rats) draws ties between CBD and the burning of fat cells. In the 2018 \"Role of Cannabinoids in Obesity\" study, published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, which [documents CBD's role in the browning of fat cells and makes the connection to burning calories](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6163475/).\n\nIn short, it appears that [CBD can boost metabolism and help with weight loss in three ways](https://hellomd.com/articles/can-cbd-speed-up-your-metabolism): \n\n- Increasing the body's ability to burn calories by boosting the activity of the mitochondria in cells \n- Decreasing the availability of proteins that are necessary to generate fat cells \n- Aiding in the browning of fat by stimulating genes and proteins to more effectively break down and oxidize fat cells\n\n![CBD vapes is a great way to consume more CBD for weight loss](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_12_at_1_38_59_PM_d05237f478.png)\n\nTo bolster your daily CBD intake, look at a CBD-rich formulation such as [2:1 Day Off](https://www.verilife.com/il/menu-arlington-heights-recreational). This disposable vape pen is available at Verilife Arlington Heights in Illinois for $43.00. This strain has equal parts CBD and THC, which is perfect for those looking for a lighter \"high\" feeling while still taking advantage of the benefits that come with CBD, such as potential weight loss. \n\n![Tribe Tokes vape cartridge](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_12_at_1_35_11_PM_83261303e9.png)\n\n[TribeTokes has a vape cartridge](https://tribetokes.com/product-item/cbd-shark-indica-cbd-vape-oil-cartridge-half-gram/) available with distillate from the CBD Shark strain for $50.00.This vape has only 2 ingredients: full spectrum CBD distillate and natural plant terpenes.\n\nOther options for ingesting CBD include edibles, tinctures, gel caps, drinks, and even dissolvable powders.\n\n### Top Cannabis Products with THCV\n\nTetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) is a rarer cannabinoid that's [called \"the sports car of cannabinoids\" for its various sought-after properties](https://www.steephill.com/blogs/38). Many in the cannabis space hailing products with THCV to be appetite suppressants. Some nightsI can't slow my mind enough to fall asleep at all. Other nights I find myself waking up multiple times, and I toss and turn throughout the night in either case. \n\n### Sleep is Essential for Good Health\n\n![Sleep is necessary for good health](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_05_at_4_19_17_PM_c8e5646e7f.png)\n\n \nI know for sure that sleep is essential for my overall health. According to [My Health Finder](https://health.gov/myhealthfinder/topics/everyday-healthy-living/mental-health-and-relationships/get-enough-sleep), sleep helps us:\n\n- Get sick less often.\n- Stay at a healthy weight.\n- Lower risk for serious health problems, like diabetes and heart disease.\n- Reduce stress and improve mood.\n- Think more clearly and do better in school and at work.\n- Get along better with people.\n\nI've searched far and wide for medicines and natural alternatives that can deliver a restful slumber. Ultimately, I've landed on [cannabis as the frontrunner](https://hellomd.com/articles/weed-and-sleep-5-things-to-know-about-your-cannabis-nightcap). The problem is that not all cannabis products are created equal. Some claim to make you sleepy but actually leave you too \"high\" and anxious to be of any help. \n\n### CBN in Cannabis Can Help You Sleep Better\n\nLuckily, science has come to the rescue. Modern scientists are uncovering ideal properties within the cannabis plant that are associated with different health benefits. [One such property is the cannabinoid called CBN](https://hellomd.com/articles/beyond-thc-and-cbd-what-you-need-to-know-about-cbc-cbn-and-cbg), which is being hailed as the most sedative cannabinoid. \n\n![The cannabinoid CBN is found in cannabis and will help you sleep better](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_05_at_4_20_42_PM_2e188ec199.png)\n\nCBN also [tames the psychoactive effects](https://hellomd.com/articles/the-cbn-cannabinoid-affects-your-health) that are typically associated with THC. So you get the best of both worlds when combining the two; great sleep, and a less intense \"high\" feeling. \n\n### Cannabis Brand Dosist Focuses on Sleep\n\nThis brings me to the cannabis brand [Dosist](https://dosist.com/). Previously I purchased their [sleep vape pen](https://hellomd.com/articles/want-to-fall-asleep-get-the-sleep-vape-pen-by-dosist) and was very impressed with the overall effect. I noticed that [they also sell gummies](https://dosist.com/edibles), and as a runner, I thought it could be nice to give my lungs a bit of a rest. \n\nIn terms of credentials, Dosist has no shortage of great media. Fast Company named Dosist as one of [2018's Top 10 Most Innovative Companies](https://www.fastcompany.com/company/dosist) in the health sector. In 2019, LinkedIn named Dosist as the [#2 Top Startup](https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/linkedin-top-startups-2019-50-hottest-us-companies-work-jessi-hempel/) on the top 50 list of hottest U.S. companies to work for.\n\n### Review of the Dosist 'Sleep' Cannabis Gummy\n\n![The Sleep gummy by Dosist contains CBN](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_05_at_4_10_03_PM_723c4a8d8d.png)\n\nWhen Dosist decided to do a gummy, they wanted to elevate beyond the standard edibles that we see in marijuana dispensaries. Their team worked to make a plant-based product with clean ingredients and enticing fruit flavors. Their gummies are also gluten-free and vegan — two diets that I adhere to strictly. \n\nBut what ultimately pushed me to purchase a package of Dosist's edible gummies was their [Sleep Blackberry Lavender](https://dosist.com/edibles) option. Just the sleek packaging and deep purple hue in the image on Dosist's website was enough to appear top-notch. They're described as a slumber-inducing gummy blended with a perfect mix of THC to CBN in a 5 to 1 ratio. I know CBN promotes sleep, among other health benefits, so I decided to order a $21 tin of gummies from their [online shop](https://shop.dosist.com/product/sleep-blackberry-lavender).\n\nJust a side note, Dosist also offers a [Sleep gummy that has a 10 to 1 ratio](https://www.dosisthealth.com/collections/sleep) of CBD to CBN too.\n\n![The Sleep gummy by Dosist contains CBN](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_05_at_4_10_52_PM_66543c4239.png)\n\n[Dosist's website](https://dosist.com/) captures the modern appeal of the Sleep product. The edibles come in a round package and look like little purple sugar cubes. I waited until I was winding down for bed and popped one in my mouth while reading a chapter of my book. If you're unfamiliar with the taste of lavender, it's just as pleasant and calming as it smells. Coupled with the sweet, tart blackberry flavor, I found myself savoring this gummy. \n\nI went back to reading with a hint of lavender still wavering on my tongue. Within 10 minutes, my eyelids began to close, and my head nodded back a bit. I felt a gentle floating sensation. So I set my book down, flicked off the lamp next to me, and let my eyes close. Eight hours later, I woke up refreshed and ready for the day. We all know it's rare to find a product that does what it says it will. \n\n![The Sleep gummy by Dosist contains CBN](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_05_at_4_12_51_PM_21ba7c1ec4.png)\n \nDosist has given me what no other product, cannabis-related or not, could offer. There's not a more definitive way of describing Dosist's sleep gummies aside from saying that these edibles are cubes of relaxation. They're fast-acting, they taste great, and they actually help you sleep. It's simple and they live up to their promise. \n\n### Where to Purchase Dosist's 'Sleep' Blackberry Lavender Gummy\n\nFor now, you're going to have to be in California to buy Dosist's gummies. But don't be discouraged if you're not. You can [subscribe to stay in touch with Dosist](https://dosist.com/stay-in-touch) and be the first to know when their products become available in your area. Dosist offers its edibles through retailers across Los Angeles, Southern and Northern California, and the Central Coast. Whether you're having a few sleepless nights or a chronic struggle to get the recommended seven-plus hours of steady sleep, insomnia can disrupt daily life and contribute to long-term health issues. Standard treatments for insomnia include holistic remedies, lifestyle changes, and a variety of prescription and over-the-counter sleep medications.\n\n![What does healthy sleep look like?](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_12_26_at_6_12_47_PM_108495d9b6.png)\n\nNow, a growing body of research reveals that cannabis can offer safe and effective relief from insomnia without the side effects of common sleep medications. And today, adults in Missouri with a qualifying medical condition can choose from a variety of quality cannabis products designed to promote a good night's sleep.\n\n### Insomnia is a Common Problem \n\nInsomnia is a broad term that describes a persistent problem with falling asleep or staying asleep. It's one of several recognized sleep disorders, and because it has many causes, it can be difficult to treat. [Common causes of insomnia](https://www.sleepfoundation.org/insomnia/what-causes-insomnia) include:\n\n- Chronic pain\n- Anxiety\n- Depression\n- Medication\n- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)\n- Shift work or other causes of irregular and interrupted sleep schedules\n- Foods and beverages\n- Lifestyle factors - such as distracting surroundings or habits \n\nFor many people, lifestyle changes that promote better conditions for sleep can resolve simple insomnia, and so can adopting healthier routines that include changes in diet and drinking habits. But some of the most common contributors to insomnia may call for other interventions.\n\n![Cannabis can help you sleep better.](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_12_26_at_7_07_01_PM_caace57c88.png)\n\n\nChronic pain from conditions such as arthritis, migraine, and cancer can cause nighttime discomforts that interfere with sleep. Anxiety also contributes to sleeplessness, and it's on the rise thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. Rates of depression and other mental health issues are rising in the US and worldwide, which can also contribute to disrupted sleep.\n\nPeople with Insomnia can turn to a variety of non-prescription sleep aids or get a prescription for pharmaceuticals. These medications can have side effects that range from dizziness and a \"hungover\" feeling to engaging in sleepwalking and other daytime activities such as driving while under the influence of sleep medication. \n\n![Sweet Chem flower is a relaxing Indica](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_12_30_at_11_59_48_AM_90d80c94aa.png)\n\nA more natural approach to alleviating sleepless nights is the use of cannabis. The many compounds and terpenes in [cannabis work with the body's regulatory systems](https://hellomd.com/articles/5-sleep-disorders-cannabis-can-help-alleviate) to relieve pain, anxiety, and other issues that may interfere with sleep. Plus, cannabis does not have the same unwanted side effects that other sleep medications are known to create.\n\n### Cannabis: A Natural Sleep Aid\n\nIn addition to helping people sleep better, cannabis has many [science-backed health benefits](https://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/medical-marijuana-faq). Cannabis contains more than a hundred known cannabinoids that work with the body's endocannabinoid system or ECS. The ECS is an extensive network of cell receptors that respond similarly to the natural cannabinoid chemicals our body produces and those produced by plant sources such as cannabis.\n\n![Vaping cannabis may help you sleep better.](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_12_26_at_7_08_39_PM_7669193817.png)\n\nThe endocannabinoid system plays a significant role in keeping the body's many subsystems in balance and moderating brain pathways related to mood and pain signaling. Cannabis cannabinoids such as THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol), along with many other compounds and terpenes, affect ECS receptors throughout the body and brain to provide pain relief and promote feelings of calm and relaxation. In that way, cannabis [can make it easier to get and stay asleep](https://hellomd.com/articles/finding-relief-from-insomnia-with-cannabis) without the risks and side effects of popular sleep aids. \n\n![Your cannabis can contain THC which can turn into CBN over time.](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_12_26_at_6_29_36_PM_05e85fb683.png)\n\nCannabis products for sleep come in various forms for smoking, vaping, or consuming, so there's an option for everyone in Missouri with a valid medical cannabis card.\n\n### Medical Cannabis is Legal in Missouri\n\nCannabis [became legal in Missouri](https://www.mpp.org/states/missouri/) for medical use in 2018, so adults can now visit dispensaries throughout the state with a valid medical card. After suffering for years from chronic pain due to intense migraines and fibromyalgia, [cannabis allowed me to stop using narcotics](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/how-we-can-disrupt-the-opioid-epidemic-with-cannabis). Those traditional pharmaceuticals didn’t provide much benefit other than occasionally masking the pain. Once I turned to cannabis, I found a solution that not only prevented my chronic pain but also helped me manage pain when it crawled through. Once I realized cannabis was a possible solution for me, I began experimenting and eventually found that microdosing was my path to success.\n\n![Hello6-min (6).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello6_min_6_6f0daaad5e.png)\n\n### Microdosing Cannabis as Effective Pain Relief\n\nWhen many people talk about microdosing, they mean taking small amounts of cannabis, waiting to feel the effects, and then taking more until you reach your desired result. The microdosing I want to talk about is taking small amounts of cannabis on a consistent basis to receive health benefits without the psychoactive effect.\n\nRespected cannabis doctor [Dr. Dustin Sulak noted substantial anecdotal evidence](https://www.projectcbd.org/sobre-cbd/clinical-research/dr-dustin-sulak-cannabis-dosing) within his practice over a period of years with microdosing. He said in a recent article, “*I discovered that most people have a certain threshold dosage of cannabis, below which they’ll actually experience a gradual increase in health benefits over time, and above which they’ll start building tolerance, experiencing diminishing benefits, and more side effects.*”\n\nAs with so much within the cannabis community, we depend upon anecdotal evidence as clinical research is scarce due to marijuana’s classification as a [Schedule 1 drug](https://www.dea.gov/drug-information/drug-scheduling#:~:text=Schedule%20I%20drugs%2C%20substances%2C%20or,). However, a recent [study conducted by University of California, San Diego, demonstrated positive results with microdosing](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3566631/). The study focused on subjects suffering from neuropathic pain and had them microdose through vaping. The results indicated that the patients who microdosed cannabis at 1.29% felt as much pain relief as the patients who used a medium dose at 3.53% cannabis. Those who microdosed less also felt better for a longer period of time than participants who ingested more.\n\n![Hello1.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_63481b85e9.png)\n\n### Lower Doses of THC May Enhance the Endocannabinoid System\n\nWhat’s most interesting about this study is its contrast with the average amount of [tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/thc) found in most vape pens or joints, which often stand at 14% and may even go as high as 95%. The amount of THC used within microdosing is substantially lower than what most consumers ingest in a typical sitting. Some hypothesize that microdosing on a consistent basis results in more positive benefits than higher doses because lower doses of cannabis enhance the [endocannabinoid system](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system) while much larger doses make our CB1 and CB2 receptors—the receptors that control appetite, pain, mood, and memoryless responsive. \n\n![Hello3.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello3_de8707650f.png)\n\n### My Personal CBD Microdosing Regimen\n\nMy version of microdosing includes a daily dose of tinctures high in [cannabidiol (CBD)](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/cbd); I like a ratio of 20:1 CBD to THC. I also use a low-dose tincture with 2.5 mg of THC per dose as many as two to three times a day. \n\nSince these THC doses are incredibly low, I never feel high, if anything, I just feel mildly relaxed. When a migraine does manage to sneak through, which is now rare, I vape a high-CBD pen of any one of the strains [Canna Tsu](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/canna-tsu), [ACDC](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/acdc), or [Harlequin](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/harlequin/). These strains contain around 20% CBD to 5% THC. Again, my goal is to manage pain and not get high, and without a doubt, I reach my goal. \n\nMicrodosing allows me to live a very full life, prevent chronic conditions, and manage pain when it happens. Without cannabis and this regime, I would be in bed for multiple days a month. Now I’m not dependent on narcotics, and I’m able to be far more functional across the board.\n\n![Hello5-min (6).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello5_min_6_18167593eb.png)\n\n### Microdosing Is Perfect for Newcomers & Seniors\n\nI feel that microdosing is the way to go for all newcomers to cannabis, as well as the fastest-growing group of medicinal marijuana users: senior citizens. These new consumers are faced with a confusing and disaggregated system. When walking into a typical dispensary, you’ll often come face to face with a 20-something budtender who might suggest an Indica gummy bear that contains 100 mg of THC, a chocolate bar with 1,000 mg, or a vape oil cartridge with a whopping 95% THC. Oftentimes, this is a recipe for disaster for the new patient.\n\n![Hello6-min (5).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello6_min_5_5d7926c2dd.png)\n\n### The Marijuana Market Needs to Catch Up\n\nUnfortunately, the cannabis marketplace is more focused on recreational consumers and hasn’t caught up with those of us using cannabis as medicine. What we need is a plethora of products that are between 2.5-5 mg per dose, whether that be a tincture, edibles, sublingual spray, or high CBD/low THC vape oil cartridges. \n\nThe bottom line is that the market has yet to catch up with consumer trends. My hope is that innovative manufacturers continue to release new products that address the new groups using medicinal marijuana, as well as the anecdotal and research-based evidence that supports microdosing cannabis.\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/cannabis-101) posts.\n\n### Get Your Medical Document & Purchase Medical Cannabis\n\nIt's easy to get your medical document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://www.hellomd.com/get-started/). Research reveals that this cannabis compound doesn’t negatively affect your heart rate or blood pressure, but scientists are still working to unravel the complex relationship between cannabis and the heart.\n\n![Hello4-min (5).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello4_min_5_c09a7860a5.png)\n\n### How Cannabis Affects the Cardiovascular System\n\nThe heart is the most visible member of the cardiovascular system—a sprawling network of veins and arteries that carry nutrient-rich blood to all parts of the body. \n\nThe [cardiovascular system is also intertwined with the endocannabinoid system (ECS)](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6020134/), a rich network of cell receptors that natural cannabinoids produced by the body, called [endocannabinoids](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system), and cannabinoids from outside sources, mainly the cannabis plant, can activate. The [ECS works with many other subsystems](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system#:~:text=The%20endocannabinoid%20system%20regulates%20autophagy,keep%20the%20whole%20body%20healthy.) and processes to support homeostasis, or balance, which is necessary for good health. \n\nSome research suggests that [the cardiovascular system is the source of the body’s endocannabinoids](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2728560/):\n\n* [Anandamide](https://hellomd.com/articles/eating-anandamide-the-bliss-molecule/)\n* 2-AG\n\nLipid molecules in the cell membranes of the heart and other cardiovascular tissues create these endocannabinoids. \n\nEndocannabinoids bind to ECS receptors, [called CB1 and CB2](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/beyond-the-cb1-and-cb2-cannabis-receptors-trpv1-and-gpr55), throughout the body and brain to support the immune system and regulate many other essential functions—and so do cannabinoids from the cannabis plant. This is why cannabis can have such a wide range of effects.\n\nBut the action of the CB1 and CB2 receptors isn’t always positive. And these receptors can behave in different ways in the presence of various cannabis compounds and [terpenes](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-are-cannabis-terpenes-and-how-do-they-work). This can make it difficult to determine whether compounds like CBD and THC are helpful or harmful in certain situations.\n\nFor example, some studies suggest that people who consume whole-plant cannabis have a higher risk of heart disease than others. And for all consumers, the risk of a heart attack increases fivefold within an hour of taking cannabis; the risk of a stroke quadruples in that same period. \n\nOn the other hand, taking cannabis can increase the survival rate after a stroke or heart attack and reduce the risk of a potentially serious condition called atrial fibrillation in people who already have heart failure.\n\n![Hello5-min (5).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello5_min_5_12ad4a87c4.png)\n \n### How Can Cannabis Cause Heart Palpitations?\n\nWhen cannabis causes negative effects on the heart and cardiovascular system, [THC is the reason](https://cannabis.net/blog/medical/heart-palpitations-when-you-use-cannabis-heres-why). \n\nAfter consuming a cannabis product that contains THC, some people experience a sudden, rapid heartbeat—an increase of up to 50 beats per minute. THC causes blood vessels to relax and open, which can make blood pressure drop. This forces the heart to beat faster to keep the usual amount of blood flowing. \n\nA speeding heartbeat after taking marijuana isn’t generally a cause for concern in healthy people, but it can be risky for people who already have some kind of heart or cardiovascular condition. \n\nCBD doesn’t affect the heart and cardiovascular system in the same way, though. It’s a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent that works not only with ECS receptors but also with other systems and processes to support healing and [relieve pain](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/5-hemp-cbd-products-for-your-aches-and-pains). \n\nCBD can also soften the effects of THC by blocking its action on the CB1 receptor. And this provides some protection from THC’s negative effects, such as:\n\n* [Anxiety](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/finding-success-with-cannabis-to-reduce-anxiety)\n* Paranoia \n* Rapid heartbeat\n\nA number of studies have investigated the effects of CBD on various physiological processes over the past decade or so. Researchers have concluded that although individual responses to CBD can vary, CBD-only products don’t cause changes in the cardiovascular system, including blood pressure and heart rate. \n\n![Hello8-min (2).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello8_min_2_c2c7be5039.png)\n\n### Is There A Connection Between CBD & Heart Palpitations?\n\nSo, why would someone have heart flutters after taking CBD? One [widely disputed study](https://www.kazmira-llc.com/blog/does-cbd-convert-to-thc-in-the-body/) hypothesized that people taking CBD can have THC-like symptoms because gastric fluids found in the stomach could actually convert CBD into THC. Researchers said THC could enter the bloodstream and affect the body in the same way as THC from cannabis could. \n\nBut the 2016 study didn’t use real gastric juices, only an analog—a substance that resembles gastric juices—that scientists use in labs to determine how fast medications could dissolve in the stomach. And the study’s researchers found that under those circumstances, the molecules in CBD did, in fact, break down into THC. \n\nBut later research contradicts their claim that CBD can convert to THC in the stomach. Numerous studies have shown that [in natural digestive juices—such as when a person consumes a CBD-infused edible—CBD remains CBD](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22129319), and no traces of THC can be found. \n\nThese studies conclude that there’s no evidence that CBD can change into THC in either humans or animals, so there’s no need to worry that taking CBD may cause THC-like effects.\n\nBut solving the mystery of having heart palpitations after taking CBD products may take some detective work. Consuming other products that affect heart rate, such as caffeine, at the same time may play a role—so could certain medications. \n\nIt’s also important to remember that CBD can affect people differently, and different products can have distinct effects. For example, tinctures enter the body quickly through the mucus membranes in the mouth, while edibles take much longer to work through the digestive system and into the bloodstream.\n\nThe relationship between CBD and the cardiovascular system is complicated, and scientists are still working to understand it. But the expanding body of research we have tells us that CBD in all its forms has powers to help, not harm, the heart.\n\n### Get Your Medical Document & Purchase Medical Cannabis\n\nIt's easy to get your medical document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://www.hellomd.com/get-started/). The term “sleep disorder” includes a variety of conditions that prevent people from getting enough sleep, including narcolepsy, sleep apnea, and insomnia. \n\n Of these, insomnia - trouble falling asleep or staying asleep - is the most common, affecting an estimated one in ten people at some time in their lives. Insomnia can be short-term or chronic, and because it has so many causes, it can be difficult to treat. \n\nCommon [contributors to insomnia](https://www.sleepfoundation.org/insomnia/what-causes-insomnia) include:\n\n- Anxiety\n- Numerous health conditions, such as restless leg syndrome\n- Chronic or acute pain\n- Medications and treatments\n- PTSD\n- Irregular sleep schedules, such as shift work\n- Distracting surroundings\n- Certain foods\n\nSome causes of insomnia can be easily remedied, such as avoiding certain foods before bedtime or rearranging the bedroom. Many people turn to the prescription drug Ambien, which has side effects ranging from dizziness and daytime fuzziness to a “sleep-wake” condition called parasomnia. This condition causes people to engage in wake time activities like driving or even shopping while under the influence of prescription sleep medication. \n\n![Indica strains are better for a good night's sleep.](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_12_26_at_7_14_23_PM_2f2ea5bcfb.png)\n\n### Cannabis Supports Sleep Naturally\n\nCannabis has many therapeutic applications-including helping people sleep better. The compounds and terpenes in this ancient plant are similar to cannabinoid-like chemicals naturally produced by the body. They activate the same network of cell receptors called CB1 and CB2, which are found throughout the organs in our bodies. \n\nThis network of receptors is called the [endocannabinoid system (ECS)](https://www.cannabinoidclinical.com/cannabinoid-science), and it plays a significant role in maintaining balance among our body’s systems, including those that regulate pain signaling, mood, relaxation, and even arousal.\n\n![Cannabis flower can help some people sleep better.](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_12_26_at_6_56_42_PM_69a74251ba.png)\n\nCBD (cannabidiol) and THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol), and other cannabinoids and terpenes work with our ECS to fight insomnia. In various combinations, these compounds activate chemical pathways in the brain that modulate perceptions of pain, promote feelings of relaxation, and reduce anxiety. Since stress, anxiety, and chronic pain can contribute to insomnia, cannabis can work as a safe and natural alternative to typical prescription and non-prescription sleep aids. \n\n ### The 5 Best Cannabis Products for Sleep in Pennsylvania\n\nCannabis [has been legal](https://www.mpp.org/states/pennsylvania/summary-sb-3) in Pennsylvania for medical purposes since 2016, but recreational purchase and use are still illegal.
