Some nightsI can't slow my mind enough to fall asleep at all. Other nights I find myself waking up multiple times, and I toss and turn throughout the night in either case. \n\n### Sleep is Essential for Good Health\n\n![Sleep is necessary for good health](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_05_at_4_19_17_PM_c8e5646e7f.png)\n\n \nI know for sure that sleep is essential for my overall health. According to [My Health Finder](https://health.gov/myhealthfinder/topics/everyday-healthy-living/mental-health-and-relationships/get-enough-sleep), sleep helps us:\n\n- Get sick less often.\n- Stay at a healthy weight.\n- Lower risk for serious health problems, like diabetes and heart disease.\n- Reduce stress and improve mood.\n- Think more clearly and do better in school and at work.\n- Get along better with people.\n\nI've searched far and wide for medicines and natural alternatives that can deliver a restful slumber. Ultimately, I've landed on [cannabis as the frontrunner](https://hellomd.com/articles/weed-and-sleep-5-things-to-know-about-your-cannabis-nightcap). The problem is that not all cannabis products are created equal. Some claim to make you sleepy but actually leave you too \"high\" and anxious to be of any help. \n\n### CBN in Cannabis Can Help You Sleep Better\n\nLuckily, science has come to the rescue. Modern scientists are uncovering ideal properties within the cannabis plant that are associated with different health benefits. [One such property is the cannabinoid called CBN](https://hellomd.com/articles/beyond-thc-and-cbd-what-you-need-to-know-about-cbc-cbn-and-cbg), which is being hailed as the most sedative cannabinoid. \n\n![The cannabinoid CBN is found in cannabis and will help you sleep better](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_05_at_4_20_42_PM_2e188ec199.png)\n\nCBN also [tames the psychoactive effects](https://hellomd.com/articles/the-cbn-cannabinoid-affects-your-health) that are typically associated with THC. So you get the best of both worlds when combining the two; great sleep, and a less intense \"high\" feeling. \n\n### Cannabis Brand Dosist Focuses on Sleep\n\nThis brings me to the cannabis brand [Dosist](https://dosist.com/). Previously I purchased their [sleep vape pen](https://hellomd.com/articles/want-to-fall-asleep-get-the-sleep-vape-pen-by-dosist) and was very impressed with the overall effect. I noticed that [they also sell gummies](https://dosist.com/edibles), and as a runner, I thought it could be nice to give my lungs a bit of a rest. \n\nIn terms of credentials, Dosist has no shortage of great media. Fast Company named Dosist as one of [2018's Top 10 Most Innovative Companies](https://www.fastcompany.com/company/dosist) in the health sector. In 2019, LinkedIn named Dosist as the [#2 Top Startup](https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/linkedin-top-startups-2019-50-hottest-us-companies-work-jessi-hempel/) on the top 50 list of hottest U.S. companies to work for.\n\n### Review of the Dosist 'Sleep' Cannabis Gummy\n\n![The Sleep gummy by Dosist contains CBN](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_05_at_4_10_03_PM_723c4a8d8d.png)\n\nWhen Dosist decided to do a gummy, they wanted to elevate beyond the standard edibles that we see in marijuana dispensaries. Their team worked to make a plant-based product with clean ingredients and enticing fruit flavors. Their gummies are also gluten-free and vegan — two diets that I adhere to strictly. \n\nBut what ultimately pushed me to purchase a package of Dosist's edible gummies was their [Sleep Blackberry Lavender](https://dosist.com/edibles) option. Just the sleek packaging and deep purple hue in the image on Dosist's website was enough to appear top-notch. They're described as a slumber-inducing gummy blended with a perfect mix of THC to CBN in a 5 to 1 ratio. I know CBN promotes sleep, among other health benefits, so I decided to order a $21 tin of gummies from their [online shop](https://shop.dosist.com/product/sleep-blackberry-lavender).\n\nJust a side note, Dosist also offers a [Sleep gummy that has a 10 to 1 ratio](https://www.dosisthealth.com/collections/sleep) of CBD to CBN too.\n\n![The Sleep gummy by Dosist contains CBN](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_05_at_4_10_52_PM_66543c4239.png)\n\n[Dosist's website](https://dosist.com/) captures the modern appeal of the Sleep product. The edibles come in a round package and look like little purple sugar cubes. I waited until I was winding down for bed and popped one in my mouth while reading a chapter of my book. If you're unfamiliar with the taste of lavender, it's just as pleasant and calming as it smells. Coupled with the sweet, tart blackberry flavor, I found myself savoring this gummy. \n\nI went back to reading with a hint of lavender still wavering on my tongue. Within 10 minutes, my eyelids began to close, and my head nodded back a bit. I felt a gentle floating sensation. So I set my book down, flicked off the lamp next to me, and let my eyes close. Eight hours later, I woke up refreshed and ready for the day. We all know it's rare to find a product that does what it says it will. \n\n![The Sleep gummy by Dosist contains CBN](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_05_at_4_12_51_PM_21ba7c1ec4.png)\n \nDosist has given me what no other product, cannabis-related or not, could offer. There's not a more definitive way of describing Dosist's sleep gummies aside from saying that these edibles are cubes of relaxation. They're fast-acting, they taste great, and they actually help you sleep. It's simple and they live up to their promise. \n\n### Where to Purchase Dosist's 'Sleep' Blackberry Lavender Gummy\n\nFor now, you're going to have to be in California to buy Dosist's gummies. But don't be discouraged if you're not. You can [subscribe to stay in touch with Dosist](https://dosist.com/stay-in-touch) and be the first to know when their products become available in your area. The first thing I do every morning is make my morning brew, between 2-3 cups of black coffee which wakes me up and provides clarity and focus on the lens of my day. You could even say that coffee is what puts a smile on my face. It’s an enjoyable habit, and I can easily say I’m addicted to the aromatic black liquid. \n\nA few hours later, when the caffeine high wears off though, I drag myself through the rest of the day. The evening comes and I feel sleepy and even a little depressed so I drink alcohol; and one drink leads to two and more. After imbibing too much I hit the sack, falling asleep right away, but then wake up in the middle of the night wide awake, so I lie helpless as my monkey mind run away from me. In the morning I need coffee, and so the cycle continues! \n\nWelcome to modern life. And, welcome to the lives of 50 to 70 million U.S. adults who experience symptoms of a sleep disorder, or the about 40 million Americans who experience insomnia every year.\n\n![Screen Shot 2021-09-30 at 2.25.00 PM.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_09_30_at_2_25_00_PM_4e812fd59c.png)\n\nKiva's [Terra CBN Milk and Cookies](https://grassdoor.com/product/terra-cbn-milk-and-cookies): A natural night time sleep aid\n\nOften, the substances we rely on to wake us up or to help us fall to sleep, whether that be coffee, alcohol, or others, can be blamed for poor quality of sleep. Coffee is a great example of a stimulant that helps us wake up, but also keeps us from achieving a proper night’s sleep. Alcohol is a great example of a depressant, which can help us relax and take our mind off the day, but which also interrupts a good night’s rest.\n\n### Why We Need a Good Sleep\n\nSleep is as important to our health and wellbeing as diet and exercise. While modern life isn’t conducive to good sleep patterns, we can improve them by imposing a regular schedule, with adequate shut-eye hours. Staying active during the day, avoiding alcohol, and minimizing screen time at night can help us get a good night of Zzzzzs.\n\nBy getting enough sleep (seven to 10 hours for teens and adults), we [receive benefits](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/325353#lower-inflammation) such as:\n\n- Boosting our productivity and concentration\n- Consuming fewer calories during the day\n- Achieving better athletic performance\n- Lowering the risk of heart disease\n- Gaining more social and emotional intelligence\n- Preventing depression\n- Lowering inflammation\n- Improving the immune system\n\n### Don’t Overdo Caffeine, Alcohol and Sleeping Pills\n\nOur [morning cup of coffee or tea](https://www.livestrong.com/article/289985-caffeine-sleeping-pills/), wakes us up with a caffeine boost. [Caffeine works in two ways]( https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/caffeine-addiction#TOC_TITLE_HDR_3):\n\n- It prevents your brain cells from signaling that you’re tired.\n- It causes your body to release other natural stimulants and boosts their effects.\nThe end result of caffeine’s effect on the brain is feelings of alertness, well-being, concentration, self-confidence, sociability and motivation to work.\nWhile it may wake us during the day, it can play havoc on our sleep if we take too much too late. It can increase the time it takes to get asleep, and reduce the amount of deep sleep we get. And the feeling of wakefulness we have with that first cup in the morning may be a sign of caffeine dependence and ending the withdrawal you are experiencing from not having coffee through the night. \n\nTo get to sleep at night we may try over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription sleeping pills. While these may work for a short-term sleep problem, if you use them constantly, you will probably develop a tolerance that prevents them from working well or at all. And some sleeping pills have the undesirable effect of making us feel groggy the next morning.\n\n[Research shows](https://believeperform.com/how-does-alcohol-caffeine-and-hyper-hydration-affect-sleep/) that consuming alcohol before sleep can disturb your sleep quality and quantity. Because alcohol metabolizes quickly, it may divide your sleep into two parts: The first part of the night you can sleep alright, with an increase in non-REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, but in the second part of the night sleep can be interrupted with lots of wake-ups and increased REM sleep and dreaming — this is why you often feel fatigued in the morning.\n\n### Marijuana as a Natural Sleeping Aid\n\nNot all substances which help us achieve a proper night’s rest are bad. Some substances, , such as marijuana, can be used as natural and effective sleep aids. When consumed properly, cannabis can enhance one’s ability to fall asleep as well as stay asleep, without causing an endless cycle of sleep disturbance on the other side.\n\n“Marijuana is an effective sleep aid because it restores a person’s natural sleep cycle, which so often falls out of sync with our schedules in today’s modern lifestyle,” says [Dr. Matt Roman, a medical marijuana physician, in a Healthline article](https://www.healthline.com/health/medical-marijuana/cannabis-for-sleeping).\n\nMost people consume THC in order to go to sleep. In some instances, people find CBD to be a potent relaxant, although in some cases it may keep you awake. Another cannabinoid which is now getting a lot of attention is CBN. Research is now pointing to CBN as the most sedative out of all the compounds in cannabis. CBN was discovered recently from decomposed THC (the psychoactive compound in cannabis). \n\n### Five Ways Marijuana Can Help You Sleep Better\n\nThat weed could be a [sleep aid](https://hellomd.com/articles/dreaming-of-better-sleep-cannabis-may-help) is common sense for anyone who has experienced couch-lock after consuming a nice relaxing strain of potent indica. \n\nHere are five ways marijuana can help you achieve a good night’s rest:\n\n1. Triggers ECS Receptors\nCannabis works by triggering receptors in our endocannabinoid systems (ECS), helping to regulate hormones, immunity, pain, hunger and, yes, sleep. Cannabinoids are naturally occurring compounds found in marijuana plants, which help have medicinal and therapeutic effects. Two of the cannabinoids that are well-known for inducing a sleep-filled night are THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol).\n\n2. THC Makes Your Eyelids Heavy\nTHC, more than CBD, makes us sleepy, so you want a strain of weed that has a high percentage of THC. It usually reduces the amount of REM sleep you get. Reducing REM sleep means reducing dreams — and for those who experience PTSD, it could mean cutting back on sleep-disturbing nightmares. If you spend less time dreaming, then you may spend more time in a deep sleep.\n\n3. Changes Your Sleep Cycle\nUsing cannabis can change your sleep cycle, so you need to use it carefully, so it doesn’t interrupt sleep patterns in a bad way. Some medical professionals suggest, for example, capping the amount of THC in your cannabis nightcap at 20%. Going over this amount gives you a powerful dose that may hinder, not help, your quest for better sleep.\n\n4. A Little Bit Goes a Long Way\nOne way to enjoy the therapeutic effects of weed is by [microdosing](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-to-microdose-with-cannabis-a-hellomd-event). This is taking cannabis with a lower dose of a specific cannabinoid (often one to three milligrams), such as THC, so that it works in the background. \n\nYou don’t necessarily feel it physiologically but get the enhancement, such as better sleep. This approach is particularly good for people who don’t want to feel the “high” often associated with some strains of weed. Microdosing usually works best if you use cannabis from licensed medical cannabis dispensaries, which strictly regulate and reveal the amounts of cannabinoids in their products.\n\n5. Be Wary of Edibles at Night\nWeed edibles are wonderful but they can take longer to kick in. This may leave you tossing and turning for a couple of hours at night before they start to work and then make you feel punchy in the morning with their lingering effects. Again, a little can go a long way. If you’re new to cannabis, try an edible that has 2.5 mg of THC or less. Titrate the dosage upwards night by night until you find the right amount for your system.\n\n### Need Your Medical Marijuana Card?\nIf you want to buy medical cannabis in a state where it is allowed, you’ll need to get a medical marijuana card. [HelloMD](https://hellomd.com/get-started/) can help you with online virtual medical consultation and get your medical card fast, easy and private.\n\n\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.5037593984962405,"src":"/static/ca9d8d9b0343bab60902b959ac62ecf4/14b42/917ffe3c452572bf0fc93a69fd3a2a97.jpg","srcSet":"/static/ca9d8d9b0343bab60902b959ac62ecf4/f836f/917ffe3c452572bf0fc93a69fd3a2a97.jpg 200w,\n/static/ca9d8d9b0343bab60902b959ac62ecf4/2244e/917ffe3c452572bf0fc93a69fd3a2a97.jpg 400w,\n/static/ca9d8d9b0343bab60902b959ac62ecf4/14b42/917ffe3c452572bf0fc93a69fd3a2a97.jpg 800w,\n/static/ca9d8d9b0343bab60902b959ac62ecf4/47498/917ffe3c452572bf0fc93a69fd3a2a97.jpg 1200w,\n/static/ca9d8d9b0343bab60902b959ac62ecf4/0e329/917ffe3c452572bf0fc93a69fd3a2a97.jpg 1600w,\n/static/ca9d8d9b0343bab60902b959ac62ecf4/96a0e/917ffe3c452572bf0fc93a69fd3a2a97.jpg 6860w","srcWebp":"/static/ca9d8d9b0343bab60902b959ac62ecf4/58556/917ffe3c452572bf0fc93a69fd3a2a97.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/ca9d8d9b0343bab60902b959ac62ecf4/61e93/917ffe3c452572bf0fc93a69fd3a2a97.webp 200w,\n/static/ca9d8d9b0343bab60902b959ac62ecf4/1f5c5/917ffe3c452572bf0fc93a69fd3a2a97.webp 400w,\n/static/ca9d8d9b0343bab60902b959ac62ecf4/58556/917ffe3c452572bf0fc93a69fd3a2a97.webp 800w,\n/static/ca9d8d9b0343bab60902b959ac62ecf4/99238/917ffe3c452572bf0fc93a69fd3a2a97.webp 1200w,\n/static/ca9d8d9b0343bab60902b959ac62ecf4/7c22d/917ffe3c452572bf0fc93a69fd3a2a97.webp 1600w,\n/static/ca9d8d9b0343bab60902b959ac62ecf4/2edd4/917ffe3c452572bf0fc93a69fd3a2a97.webp 6860w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2608-markdown","title":"Beyond THC & CBD: What You Need to Know About CBC, CBN & CBG","slug":"beyond-thc-and-cbd-what-you-need-to-know-about-cbc-cbn-and-cbg","content":"In the last couple of articles in our series for cannabis newcomers, we took a closer look at cannabis’s most common cannabinoids, including [tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a8dab1cf24d1300077ccb58/the-pros-and-cons-of-psychoactive-thc) and [cannabidiol (CBD)](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a8dafa0f24d1300077ccb59/whats-so-great-about-cannabidiol-or-cbd). While some see it as a bad thing when THC turns into CBN—since it means that your cannabis has aged and no longer has the same effects it once did, others actually prefer aged cannabis for this very reason. CBN has a wide range of effects that patients can take advantage of, if they know what they’re looking for. \r\n\r\nOne major reason [why folks use CBN is because it can help them sleep](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a00c7e5462abf14dd36415f/having-trouble-sleeping-try-non-psychoactive-cbn). CBN has been shown to be extremely sedative; it’s perhaps the most sedative cannabinoid, and many use it to ease insomnia. If you’re trying to get a good night’s sleep, it might be just the thing to try. \r\n\r\n[CBN can also help with appetite stimulation](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22543671) so it may be helpful for patients who suffer from anorexia, cancer or other conditions that negatively impact appetite. \r\n\r\n[Research also suggests that CBN is a powerful antibiotic](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/58dad93ab0a1146891b875b1/is-marijuana-the-next-antibiotic). Along with CBG and CBC, CBN has been shown to effectively treat antibiotic-resistant infections like methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). \r\n\r\nThose with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig’s disease, may also find CBN helpful in slowing the disease’s progression. In one study, [researchers were able to delay the onset of ALS symptoms in mice by treating them with CBN](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/57c4f71703c697000bb34a44/cannabis-provides-hope-for-als-patients).\r\n\r\n[CBN may help patients with glaucoma](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3202504/). According to the research, the cannabinoid is effective at lowering ocular pressure, which can cause blindness for glaucoma patients.\r\n\r\nRELATED: [CANNABINOIDS: CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS WITH HUGE THERAPEUTIC POTENTIAL](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55da2ff26430380006690000/cannabinoids-chemical-compounds-with-huge-therapeutic-potential)\r\n\r\n### Why Do Medical Marijuana Patients Use Cannabigerol (CBG)?\r\n\r\nCBG is another cannabinoid that brings with it a medley of beneficial effects. Like CBN, [CBG has been shown to have antibiotic properties](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/58dad93ab0a1146891b875b1/is-marijuana-the-next-antibiotic).\r\n\r\nIn addition, [CBG is being touted as a powerful pain reliever](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/228897917_Cannabis_and_cannabis_extracts_Greater_than_the_sum_of_their_parts). In fact, some research suggests that CBG is even more effective at managing pain than either THC or CBD is. \r\n\r\nCBG is also said to help with the side effects of menopause. This may be, in part, because of its pain-relieving properties. That said, [CBG also helps prevent the onset of osteoporosis and bone loss after menopause](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5817c7fad07155000b1f2f9f/marijuana-relieves-symptoms-of-menopause).\r\n\r\n[CBG has been shown to have anti-tumor properties](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3570006/), and may be especially [helpful for individuals who have skin cancer](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/574b5d95982db9000800005e/could-cannabis-help-alleviate-skin-cancer). When it comes to other skin conditions, [CBG can also help alleviate psoriasis](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/228897917_Cannabis_and_cannabis_extracts_Greater_than_the_sum_of_their_parts) by preventing the reddening of the skin. \r\n\r\nSome patients may also use the compound to regulate their emotions. [Research has shown CBG can act as a moderate antidepressant](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/168349), raising serotonin levels in the brain.\r\n\r\n### Why Do Medical Marijuana Patients Use Cannabichromene (CBC)? \r\n\r\nMany of the reasons people use CBC are similar to the reasons why folks use CBG and CBN. Like CBG and CBN, CBC is also an antibiotic that’s been shown to help combat bacterial infections. Like CBG, [CBC appears to help reduce pain](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55a5559d6237660006250000/marijuana-nips-pain-in-the-bud), [ease the symptoms of menopause](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5817c7fad07155000b1f2f9f/marijuana-relieves-symptoms-of-menopause) and [act as an antidepressant](http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0091305710000730).\r\n\r\nSome patients who use CBC do so for its neuroprotectant properties. Not only does [CBC protect the brain](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56ce341bc475c20008000085/does-marijuana-kill-brain-cells), it actually encourages your brain to grow new brain cells in the specific areas responsible for memory and learning. When your brain stops developing new cells in these areas, the risk for neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's disease increases. CBC can be a great aid in preventing or delaying the onset of these conditions. \r\n\r\nCBC is also a cannabinoid that’s known as a potent anti-inflammatory agent. While it can fight inflammation on its own, research shows that [CBC is most effective at reducing inflammation when used synergistically with THC](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20619971).\r\n\r\n### Using These Less Popular Cannabinoids\r\n\r\nBecause CBC, CBG and CBN are less well known than THC and CBD are, they’re also more difficult to find as isolated cannabinoids. There are only a few products on the market that actually isolate these chemicals. That said, if you can’t find cannabis products that are made up entirely of CBG, CBN or CBC, you may try products whose test results show higher levels of these compounds.\r\n\r\nAs it is, [cannabis usually works best with a combination of compounds](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56d0f3acbbf86b000b0000ae/what-is-the-entourage-effect), rather than one cannabinoid in isolation. Now that you’re familiar with the effects of these cannabinoids, you can start making more educated decisions about which products may be best for you. \r\n \r\nIn the next installment of our Cannabis for Newbies guide, we’ll move onto another important category of cannabis chemicals: terpenes. These aromatic compounds are responsible for the taste and smell of cannabis, but also for many of its medicinal effects.\r\n\r\nPhoto credit: [Jurassic Blueberries](https://www.flickr.com/photos/jurassicblueberries/)\r\n\r\nNeed a medical marijuana recommendation? Try Non-Psychoactive CBN","slug":"having-trouble-sleeping-try-non-psychoactive-cbn","content":"If you consumed marijuana that was sitting around for longer than usual or was exposed to open air or sunlight for an extended period of time, you may have felt a little sleepier afterward. Don’t worry, you didn’t imagine it. There’s actually a scientific reason why old cannabis has increased sedative effects. It happens when tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is left out in the open and changes into a lesser-known compound called cannabinol (CBN). \n\nAccording to [Steep Hill Labs](https://www.steephill.com/), one of the leading cannabis testing labs in the country, [CBN is a very useful and unique cannabinoid](http://steephill.com/blogs/34/Cannabinol-(CBD)) that can help people who suffer from sleep disorders, need a sedative to control conditions like muscle spasms or anxiety, or have vision issues like glaucoma—without psychoactive effects. \n\n### How Does THC Turn Into CBN? \n\n![Your cannabis can contain THC which can turn into CBN over time.](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_12_26_at_6_29_36_PM_05e85fb683.png)\n\nExposure to certain elements can alter a cannabinoid’s chemical makeup, pushing it into a new stage of life as a different compound altogether. According to Steep Hill Labs, almost all identified cannabinoids have something in common: They’re stored in the cannabis plant in their acid form until heat is applied, in a **process called decarboxylation**. The heat forces cannabinoids to take on a new chemical make-up that sometimes results in different side effects. \n\nFor example, THC, the cannabinoid that makes us feel high, is stored in the cannabis plant as an acid called THCA, which has no psychoactive effects. But once heat is applied, THCA’s chemical makeup is altered, and it turns into THC.\n\nUnlike most cannabinoids, CBN doesn’t appear as a result of decarboxylation, but instead arises simply from contact with air and UV rays that deteriorate cannabis over time. Steep Hill Labs notes that “most of the CBN found in cannabis is due to the degradation of THC, where THC has oxidized to CBN.” \n\nSo cannabis that has been sitting around for many weeks, exposed to open air or UV rays, will result in more THC turning into CBN. \n\n### CBN Helps You Sleep Without Making You High\n\nSimilar to CBD, CBN has very little to no “high” side effects. But what CBN lacks in psychoactive properties, it makes up for in sedative potential. Some medical cannabis patients may enjoy oxidized cannabis for its ability to help treat [sleep disorders, an issue that affects 60 million Americans](http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=90638364) each year.\n\n![Plus gummies has a Sleep formulation with CBN](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_12_26_at_6_34_36_PM_f3b4a03c09.png)\n\n[Cloudberry Sleep gummies by Plus](https://www.plusproducts.com/sleep) include CBN as an ingredient.\n\nSteep Hill Labs says consuming 2.5 to 5 mg of CBN will have a level of sedative effects equal to a mild pharmaceutical sedative-like Diazepam. They say that the right dose of CBN can be a natural treatment option and effective aid for sleeping five to six hours. \n\nIf you prefer cannabis without increased sedative effects, you can easily follow proper storing techniques that can help keep your cannabis fresh for longer. \n\n### CBN as an Alternative to THC \n\nSteep Hill Labs also concluded that CBN can be a “beneficial alternative to THC for treatment.” \n\nThis is a big revelation especially considering that [many medical cannabis patients want treatment options with little to no psychoactive results](https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/a-powerful-new-form-of-medical-marijuana-without-the-high/2016/12/29/81bbf7c0-b5b2-11e6-b8df-600bd9d38a02_story.html?utm_term=.61250fd47f9a), specifically children or elderly patients uncomfortable with being high. As a result, these patients, or their caregivers, often choose CBD-only options, attracted to their lack of psychoactive side effects. \n\n![Peak Extracts offers a CBN chocolate](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_12_26_at_6_37_46_PM_a540ed1fd8.png)\n\n[Peak Extracts](https://www.peakextracts.com/) offers a CBN chocolate.\n \nBut some physicians believe **CBD-only treatments are less effective than treatments that incorporate THC with CBD**. If CBN can be an effective treatment alternative to THC, patients may be able to get the same medical benefits without getting high. \n\nAs with all things cannabis, more research must be done to fully understand all of the treatment applications for CBN and whether the cannabinoid is truly an effective alternative to THC. But if you live in a marijuana-friendly state and suffer from sleep disorders or glaucoma, talk with your doctor about CBN as a potential natural treatment option. \n\n### Get Your Medical Document & Purchase Medical Cannabis\n\nIt's easy to get your medical document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://hellomd.com/). Bacteria evolve quickly and mounting antibiotic resistant strains can cause major problems for humans. Many researchers believe that increasing antibiotic resistance is caused by the overprescription of antibiotics for illnesses that don’t truly require them, which has given bacteria the chance to create mechanisms to counter the antibiotics. \r\n
\r\nCannabis has been found to have impressive anti-microbial qualities and the ability to fight many bacterial infections that can no longer be properly combatted by antibiotics. The first historic mention of cannabis being used to fight a bacterial infection was in 1935, when cannabis was used to treat gonorrhea. Though antibiotics were still relatively new at the time, only first being put into use in 1928, many strains of gonorrhea had already become resistant to antibiotics, namely penicillin. The trials of using cannabis to treat gonorrhea ended only 2 years later, when the Marijuana Tax Act was put into place, but cannabis was believed to decrease many symptoms of gonorrhea, though the trials were not conducted in a formalized scientific study. \r\n\r\n### Marijuana & MRSA\r\n\r\nIn 2008, a joint [Italian and United Kingdom study](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/275830072_Antibacterial_Cannabinoids_from_Cannabis_sativa_A_Structure-Activity_Study) was conducted on the benefits of cannabinoids on MRSA, an extremely dangerous staph infection. \r\n\r\nMany strains of MRSA are resistant to antibiotics and are extremely hard to treat, leading to possibly life threatening consequences. The study found that five cannabinoids in cannabis, CBC, CBD, CBG, THC, and CBN, were all effective at killing six different strains of MRSA. \r\n\r\n[![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/58dad93ab0a1146891b875b1/embedded_images/58daf49eb0a1147559b875df/SavaA.jpeg)](https://www.getsava.com/shop/alchemy-buy-one-get-one-cartridge/)\r\n[DEAL: Buy any Relax or Awaken Alchemy blend and battery on Sava and receive Inspire for FREE! ($35 value).](https://www.getsava.com/shop/alchemy-buy-one-get-one-cartridge/)  Limited time offer.\r\n\r\nOne of the head authors of the study and head of the Department of Pharmaceutical and Biological Chemistry at the University College London School of Pharmacy said of cannabinoids after the study, “Everything points towards these compounds having been evolved by the plants as antimicrobial defenses that specifically target bacterial cells.” The cannabinoids were as effective as Vancomycin, the strongest antibiotic available. \r\n\r\n### Cannabis & Hemp\r\n\r\nOne of the most promising aspects of the study was that the medication could be derived from both cannabis and hemp, with the two most effective cannabinoids having no psychoactive properties. The researchers determined that, since MRSA often expressed on the skin, topical products with cannabinoids could be one of the most effective ways to fight the infection. Cannabis was also found to continuously fight MRSA, even as it developed various antibiotic resistances. \r\n\r\n[CBD](http://thehempoilbenefits.com/cbd-antibiotic-resistant-bacteria) is a particularly promising cannabinoid when it comes to fighting bacterial infections. CBD oil was found to be the most effective against antibiotic resistance bacteria than any antibiotic available. CBD is also known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties, which could make it beneficial for many more conditions than just MRSA. \r\n\r\nOne major road block to implementing widespread use of cannabis in the place of antibiotics, however, is the current legality of the substance. Though it is medically and recreationally legalized in many states across the United States, it is still seen federally as a Schedule I substance, meaning it is believed to have absolutely no medical value. Hopefully, however, this study’s recent rise in notoriety could provide another incentive for the government to take cannabis seriously as a viable medical product that could save many lives. Finding an alternative to antibiotics is important now more than ever as the scientific community struggles to keep up with rapidly changing bacteria and an increased prevalence of antibiotic resistant bacteria strains. Cannabis contains far more compounds than just\nthese two best-known compounds, however. One of the lesser-known\ncompounds, CBN (cannabinol), is being studied closely because of its\npossible therapeutic value to patients.\n\n**CBD, THC and CBN**\n\nCBD has been found useful in pain management, as a drug that could\npossibly [combat cancer](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22506672)\nand for its general anti-inflammatory properties. CBD achieves this\nthrough its impact on certain receptors in the brain.\n[THC](https://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/marijuana.html), the\nbest-known property of cannabis, can enable pain relief, help with\nnausea and diminish anxiety due to its psychotropic properties. CBN is\nthe third compound in medical marijuana that can help with [pain\nrelief](http://www.jneurosci.org/content/22/11/4720.full). In addition,\nCBN has been studied for its ability to [treat\ninsomnia](http://steephilllab.com/cbn-a-sleeping-synergy/) and\n[stimulate appetite](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22543671).\n\n**How CBN Activates**\n\nUnlike CBD, which occurs separately from THC within cannabis, CBN\n[distills](http://steephilllab.com/cbn-a-sleeping-synergy/) from THC.\nSpecifically, Steep Hill Lab describes the CBD-to-THC process as being\none of oxidization after THC degrades. During this process, THC loses\nits psychoactive properties, but retains the ability to be an\nanti-inflammatory while also enhancing feelings of relaxation.\n\n**Enhanced Impact of CBN on Patients**\n\nStudies have shown that CBN enhances the impact of THC and CBD in\ncertain types of therapies. All three compounds--THC, CBD and CBN--have\nbeen found to have antibacterial qualities, particularly against viruses\nsuch as [MRSA](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18681481). In\naddition, studies have shown positive results in the impact of CBN on\n[lung carcinomas](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1159836) in\nanimals. That could mean that patients may someday experience similar\npositive benefits from CBN as well.\n\n**Getting the Best of Cannabis**\n\nLike many mainstream medications, different medical marijuana patients\nget different results from the various compounds that comprise cannabis.\nOne benefit to CBN is, as the National Institute of Health terms it,\n[the taming of\nTHC](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3165946/). Some\npatients may need and seek the more psychotropic properties offered by\nTHC. For other patients, however, those very properties outweigh the\npotential benefits they may experience. And that's where CBN can make a\ndifference. As THC oxidizes into CBN, psychotropic properties are\ntamed--thinned out, basically--and that enables patients to achieve the\nanti-inflammatory, pain relief or other symptomatic improvements they\nneed.\n\n**Hope for the Future**\n\nThe list of ailments that medical marijuana may be able to treat or help\nprovide relief from grows on a near-daily basis: help for cancer\npatients, controlling\nepilepsy,\nminimizing the pain of\n[fibromyalgia](https://www.hellomd.com/learn/fibromyalgia)\nand\n[migraines](https://www.hellomd.com/learn/migraines)\nare a few medical issues on that list. More research dollars are\nbeginning to flow to determine the other properties of cannabis that may\nprove medically beneficial. Additionally, more formulations of medical\nmarijuana are being developed in different strains to help increasingly\ndifferent issues.\n\nCBN is the latest discovery that has proven to be of great benefit to\npatients, and it won't be the last. As research ferrets out more ways in\nwhich CBN and other compounds can be used--such as the anti-tumor\nproperties already observed in lab animals--practitioners can begin\nrecommend cannabis to broader groups of patients. Medical marijuana is\nalready legal in 23 states as well as the District of Columbia, and its\nreach grows with each election cycle as well. With the combination of\nenhanced research, enhanced prescribing and enhanced availability,\npatients will benefit exponentially.\n\n[Photo Credit](https://www.flickr.com/photos/noaa_glerl/6329688296/in/photolist-aDkiNQ-tCkcU-x1m84-oUChc-5x1Trn-eex4Fn-rxei46-rt3L2H-iG3ViD-UQ1W-GB86X-aPUr2a-bv75No-asMweG-6gBj3T-QZ7Kg-bk4yHS-dPdydB-6AV8nA-63DZSF-iG5Lmf-8FegjL-6AQWT4-9QM3mp-orYs3-orYs5-9U2ZkW-cBwrEu-9FTGM9-r9QMhM-qfb9Ls-aeh1t9-rkFrGp-aeh1J5-92SgXr-4NjUJ-eqfihP-8cGETw-rnUFk7-woA9Mh-dGcWib-o66YH-cBwruS-27ywx-bpYfH6-61U8f2-4ZpJrh-2ViCx-aeh2fU-ezuEza)\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.408450704225352,"src":"/static/f0938514a6eb3023d048f1759e0bdf7b/ee604/e1aa58d3a4245cd37ccbdc3ea7ce325a.png","srcSet":"/static/f0938514a6eb3023d048f1759e0bdf7b/69585/e1aa58d3a4245cd37ccbdc3ea7ce325a.png 200w,\n/static/f0938514a6eb3023d048f1759e0bdf7b/497c6/e1aa58d3a4245cd37ccbdc3ea7ce325a.png 400w,\n/static/f0938514a6eb3023d048f1759e0bdf7b/ee604/e1aa58d3a4245cd37ccbdc3ea7ce325a.png 800w,\n/static/f0938514a6eb3023d048f1759e0bdf7b/f3583/e1aa58d3a4245cd37ccbdc3ea7ce325a.png 1200w,\n/static/f0938514a6eb3023d048f1759e0bdf7b/6af1e/e1aa58d3a4245cd37ccbdc3ea7ce325a.png 1424w","srcWebp":"/static/f0938514a6eb3023d048f1759e0bdf7b/58556/e1aa58d3a4245cd37ccbdc3ea7ce325a.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/f0938514a6eb3023d048f1759e0bdf7b/61e93/e1aa58d3a4245cd37ccbdc3ea7ce325a.webp 200w,\n/static/f0938514a6eb3023d048f1759e0bdf7b/1f5c5/e1aa58d3a4245cd37ccbdc3ea7ce325a.webp 400w,\n/static/f0938514a6eb3023d048f1759e0bdf7b/58556/e1aa58d3a4245cd37ccbdc3ea7ce325a.webp 800w,\n/static/f0938514a6eb3023d048f1759e0bdf7b/99238/e1aa58d3a4245cd37ccbdc3ea7ce325a.webp 1200w,\n/static/f0938514a6eb3023d048f1759e0bdf7b/ed80f/e1aa58d3a4245cd37ccbdc3ea7ce325a.webp 1424w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}}]}},"pageContext":{"limit":12,"skip":0,"numPages":1,"currentPage":1,"id":5090,"name":"Cbn","slug":"cbn","country":"US"}},"staticQueryHashes":["3949754563","4179947113","4202924991"]}
