But, many people prefer the old-fashioned way - they like to inhale their weed. \n\nThere are a surprising number of ways in which to do so, including:\n\n- smoking your bud from a preroll or \"joint\"\n- inhaling flower from a pipe or bong\n- vaping cannabis oil or even fresh flower\n- dabbing from resin, wax, and shatter\nSmoking your marijuana in a joint, pipe, or bong for many people is the traditional way to consume cannabis, but it is also indiscreet and smelly. Another route to take is by vaping cannabis or dabbing. In this article, we explore these two different methods of consumption.\n\n### What is Dabbing?\n\n[Dabbing](https://hellomd.com/articles/why-do-some-patients-dab-medical-marijuana) is what many people may consider to be advanced play when it comes to weed consumption. For the most part, dabbing cannabis will pack a real punch - the end result being a very potent psychoactive high. \n\nDabs are more potent than other methods of consumption as they are concentrated extractions of cannabis containing high amounts of THC and other cannabinoids. Dabs are created using solvents like butane or carbon dioxide which when extracted become what's known as wax, butane hash oil (BHO), shatter, and budder.\n\nDabs are consumed by heating the resin within a dab rig and inhaling. While a dab rig is handy, consumers can purchase resin from the local dispensary and heat it on the tip of a nail with a blowtorch. This may seem crude, but it's an inexpensive way to find out if dabbing is right for you. As concentrates have become more popular there are now new products on the market such as electronic nails, or \"enails\", which eliminate the need for a torch.\n\nPeople who dab may do so because they like the intensity of the high or they may need more concentrated amounts of THC to deal with issues such as chronic pain or nausea associated with cancer treatment. If you are new to dabbing and unsure of your weed tolerance, be forewarned that most cannabis extracts test between 60-90% THC which will give you an extremely potent experience. \n\nFor some, this may be overwhelming and result in an unpleasant and uncomfortable experience. Lastly, from a medical research standpoint, the long-term effects of dabbing concentrates are unknown. When these flowers are processed to extract their essential oils, their active ingredients become much more concentrated. The result—you guessed it—is a cannabis concentrate. There are so many different types of concentrates available. Walking into a dispensary, you’ll likely see a collection of concentrates that includes many colors, textures, consistencies and presentations. You may also see a number of names used to describe these concentrates, such as: \n\n* extract\n* oil\n* wax\n* dabs\n* shatter\n* rosin\n* hash\n* kief\n* honey\n\nThis variety is partly due to differences in the flowers used for each product, but is primarily based on how the concentrates were made. \n\n\n\n### Cannabis Extractions Using Chemical Solvents\n\nConcentrates are made in a variety of ways. In recent years, chemical extractions have grown in popularity, so much so that these days most concentrates are made using some kind of chemical solvent. BHO, or butane hash oil, is one of the most popular concentrated cannabis extracts; it’s made by using butane, but you can also find products made with chemicals like:\n\n* propane\n* isopropyl alcohol\n* ethanol\n* hydrocarbons\n* carbon dioxide\n\nThese chemical solvents produce concentrates in a variety of colors—from clear to amber—and textures—from liquidy or sticky like taffy to hard and brittle or dry and crumbly. \nUnfortunately, many of these solvents have known health risks. While there are processes to remove the chemical solvents from the resulting extract, not all manufacturers have the skill or equipment to fully purge these chemicals. In states where testing regulations are lax or nonexistent, cannabis extracts may still contain harmful residual solvents. \n\n### Non-Chemical Cannabis Extraction Methods\n\nTo avoid the risks posed by the presence of chemical solvents, many patients choose to use extracts that haven’t been processed with chemicals. The most historical methods, involving the production of kief and hash, use natural resources like water and movement to extract cannabinoids from the plant.\nKief has a light powdery consistency and is made by filtering cannabis pollen through a screen. Meanwhile, hash uses water to remove the potent components found in the plant and usually comes out as a darker concentrate with a consistency that can be sticky like taffy or dry with a dirt-like appearance. \n\nRosin, a third method that doesn’t involve the use of chemicals, is a more recent innovation that involves using pressure and heat to squeeze the essential oils from the cannabis plant. Rosin, like extracts processed chemically, can come in many colors and textures—from hard and brittle to a liquidy oil. \n\n### Ways You Can Use Cannabis Concentrates\n\nYou can use concentrates in almost every way that you can consume the cannabis flower. They can be smoked, vaped or turned into infused products like edibles and topicals. Patients often use different tools to smoke or vape concentrates than they would when smoking or vaping flower. \n\nThe easiest way to enjoy a concentrate these days is with a prefilled cartridge. These ready-to-go cartridges fit onto most e-pens or vaping batteries, and are already filled with concentrates. If you're wondering what this practice entails, then you'll want to know about rosin. Rosin is a simple mechanical process that has been around for several years and has recently gained notice. You don't need to be an expert in botanical\nextractions or chemistry to get an excellent return on rosin.\n\n### Rosin Is Low-Cost & Simple\n\nViolin players know rosin as a process that converts resin into a substance used to coat their bows to help ease friction when its applied to the violin strings. Rosin is also what the substance is called. Meanwhile, marijuana aficionados know it as a way to distill resin from the plant using only heat and pressure. This extraction process is inexpensive and easy to do. Necessary tools to extract resin include: \n\n- An inexpensive hair straightener\n- Parchment paper\n- A metal dabber\n- An oven glove or other safety glove\n\nCompared with a closed-loop extraction system, which requires professional pumps and can easily cost several thousand dollars, the tools for rosin are surprisingly cheap. The final product is similar to butane hash oil, but without its potentially carcinogenic residual hydrocarbons—since chemicals such as butane and propane are unnecessary.\n\n### How to Produce Optimal Rosin\n\nDepending on how many flowers are going to be pressed, the rosin process may only take a matter of minutes. Before getting started, you'll want to consider the following:\n\n- Doing the rosin procedure in bulk may not be worth the effort. Processing about 7 grams or fewer per sitting can offer the best return.\n- While most hair straighteners work, ones with a digital temperature display are useful since the plates will need to be between 200–300 degrees F.\n- Two-inch wide plates on the hair straightener are best for pressing the buds—although thinner plates will also do the trick.\n\n### Making the Rosin Extract\n\n1. Heat the hair straightener to at least 200 F. Buds used in this process should be moist, although they don't need to be wet. Wear safety gloves when handling the hair straightener, since your fingers will get close to the hot plates.\n\n2. To get the tightest press, lay the the hair straightener down like a stapler, with one paddle on a sturdy, flat surface and the other paddle in the air. A harder press typically results in a better return.\n\n3. Fold the bud over once, then cut a small envelope of parchment paper, at least four times larger than the now-folded bud. Slide the bud into the paper. This step is similar to making a dumpling or ravioli, but with the marijuana as the filling.\n\n4. With the gloves on, line up the pouch with the bud inside between the two paddles of the hair straightener. Then snap the two pieces of paper together. The paper holding the flower\nshould be placed on the bottom plate and flattened between the two paddles. (Take care not to get your fingers clipped between the two plates.)\n\n5. When the plates are pressed together, you'll hear the sound of sizzling. Press the flower 5–10 seconds. Given the strain and freshness of the cannabis, different pressing times may need to be tested. \n\n6. Remove the flower from the parchment paper. Check how much oil is on the paper. Depending on the success of the press, it may be necessary to fold the buds over and press them again. It's common to fold and re-press buds 2–3 times.\n\n7. Once a satisfactory amount of oil is on the parchment (a 20% yield is common), use the dabber to pick up the rosin. Oil on the tool can be used to help pick up more oil.\n\nThe result is a marijuana extract, also called rosin, that's easy to make and free of solvents. Once you've completed the rosin process, you can inhale it with a hash pipe, vaporizer or dab rig. Other research, however, has also shown that\nthe cannabinoids in marijuana [provide some\nprotection](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1277837/)\nagainst damage from these chemicals - cannabis seems to boost the immune\nresponse and block enzyme action needed for carcinogenesis - and has\nfailed to find a link between [marijuana and lung\ncancer](http://cebp.aacrjournals.org/content/15/10/1829.short) or\nlong-term negative effects on [lung\ncapacity](http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=1104848).\n\nSmoking cannabis has, however, been linked to respiratory problems\nincluding increased [coughing, wheezing, sputum\nproduction](http://www.ukcia.org/research/RespiratoryEffectsOfCannabisDependence.pdf),\nand airway inflammation. Thus, patients may be reluctant to use this\nmethod despite evidence showing it is faster than ingestion for\ncannabinoid delivery.\n\nAnother cannabis delivery option is\n[vaporization](http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1300/J175v04n01_02#.Ve3cPxFVikp).\nIn this method, the cannabis is heated to a temperature lower than what\noccurs with combustion (combustion occurs at about 230°C). The lower\ntemperature (185°C) releases the cannabinoids, and not the toxins, into\na mist or vapor that is inhaled. The amount of cannabinoid delivered is\nsimilar to that of smoking, but has [fewer respiratory symptoms and\nproblems](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1853086/).\n\nSafer than Smoking\n------------------\n\nTetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is one of the most abundant cannabinoids in\ncannabis and is associated with the marijuana high. THC can help treat\npain, nausea, vomiting, and appetite loss. In a\n[study](http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1300/J175v04n01_02#.Ve3cPxFVikp)\nthat compared vaporization and smoking, researchers found that THC\nlevels were between 36 percent and 61 percent for vaporization, which is\nsimilar to the levels found with smoking cannabis. Furthermore,\nexamination of the vapor found only trace amounts of the toxic chemicals\nfound in smoke.\n\nEach cannabinoid has a different [evaporation\ntemperature](http://www.zamnesia.com/content/284-vaporizer-temperatures-for-cannabis).\nTHC evaporates at about 157°C, whereas cannabidiol (CBD) evaporates at\ntemperatures between 160 and 180°C.\n[CBD](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3579248/) has been\nfound effective in treating pain, nausea, vomiting, anxiety, and\ndepression, as well as in reducing cancerous tumors. The trick with\nvaporization is to keep the temperature high enough to release the\ncannabinoids, but low enough to prevent combustion.\n\nConduction vs. Convection\n-------------------------\n\nCurrent vaporizers work either through conduction or convection. In\nconduction, the cannabis is placed directly on a heating element,\nsometimes referred to as a nail, that has been heated with a flame. With\nconvection, heat is indirect and is transferred through a gas or liquid\nto the cannabis. Both methods have some positives and negatives.\n\nConduction vaporization:\n\n-   Heats quickly\n-   Requires a less expensive device\n-   Has a higher risk of combustion as there is no temperature control\n    for a direct flame\n-   Requires shaking or stirring of the cannabis between draws\n\nConvection vaporization:\n\n-   Takes longer to heat\n-   Requires a more expensive device\n-   Provides for more accurate temperature control and thus more even\n    heating\n-   Has less chance of combustion\n\nFlower vs. Concentrate\n----------------------\n\nVaporizers\ntake either herb (leaves and flowers) or concentrate. Vapor from herbs\ncontains between 5 percent and 20 percent THC and from concentrate about\n60 percent. To create concentrate, cannabis is filtered through a\nsolvent, ice water, or carbon dioxide to separate the THC from the plant\nmatter. This concentrate is then placed in the vaporizer for use.\n\nPatients should talk with their medical marijuana professional to see\nwhat types of vaporizers and what form of cannabis would be best for\ntheir needs.
