But what about making a commitment to being more creative? \n\nIt turns out art and creativity can be good for your health. A [2010 review](https://ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/10.2105/AJPH.2008.156497) found that creative expression could:\n\n* Boost mood\n* Decrease depression\n* Reduce the body’s stress response\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nIn addition to the mental benefits, creativity may also have physical advantages. Recent studies have found that folks who engage in art activities like painting, drawing and woodworking during middle to old age may delay cognitive decline. [Engaging your mind may protect brain cells](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25854867), it seems. \n\nBut let’s be real: If you’re not artistically inclined, making art can be intimidating. So, what better way to break down mental barriers and get your creative juices flowing than with a little bit of cannabis, of course. \n\nOne study even suggests that [cannabis can be especially helpful for those who aren’t inclined to creative thinking](http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1348009/2/1348009.pdf). In small doses, the active ingredients in cannabis, namely tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), have been known to foster divergent thinking. This phenomenon, where the brain connects seemingly disparate concepts, is sometimes thought of as the foundation of human creativity. \n\nBut if you aren’t familiar with consuming cannabis to up your creativity, where do you start? Don’t worry—we got you. Whether you’re drawing, painting, writing or playing music, we’ve put together a variety of products you can use to help your creativity reach new heights. \n\nRELATED: [MEET 3 ARTISTS WHO USE CANNABIS TO SPARK THEIR CREATIVITY](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a53b186100a820006562f54/meet-3-artists-who-use-cannabis-to-spark-their-creativity)\n\n### 1. For the past four years, her work has been centered around what she calls “fantastical plant and jungle worlds.” Her current work is a way to explore 2D concepts—such as patterns and visual contrast—she’s interested in. \r\n\r\nSays Angelica, “[Cannabis] has definitely helped me let go of some of the anxieties that I have around art-making. … You worry less about something being perfect.”\r\n\r\nFor Anjelica, marijuana has become a tool to reinvigorate her mind—especially when she needs to look at concepts in a different way. However, she also cautions that cannabis can be a hindrance for work that requires precision, so when it comes to technical or dexterous tasks, she skips cannabis altogether. \r\n\r\n“I'm a little joint queen—that's what I would call myself,” says Anjelica. “There’s something more luxurious about them, and in turn, more relaxing and indulgent—sort of like drinking beer out of the can versus pouring it into a chilled glass.”\r\n\r\nAnjelica says that sativas or sativa hybrids tend to boost her creativity, and she thinks they could be a good option for those who tend not to get too anxious. \r\n\r\nRELATED: [TOP 5 MARIJUANA STRAINS FOR BEGINNERS](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a4bcba8100a820006562f48/top-5-marijuana-strains-for-beginners)\r\n\r\nAnjelica advises newbies to “come into it without huge expectations—just give yourself time and space to do whatever is on your mind. It should be your brainstorming time and your rough draft time.” She notes that these instances are also a great opportunity to make things with your friends. “Try that out and have a little draw party,” she says. \r\n\r\nAnjelica’s website: [www.anjelicacolliard.com](https://www.anjelicacolliard.com/)\r\n\r\nAnjelica’s Instagram: [@jellicore](https://www.instagram.com/jellicore/)\r\n\r\n\r\n### 2. She enjoys the comic medium for its ability to express “simultaneous, but conflicting circumstances.”\r\n\r\nKrusty’s currently working on a comic biography of counterculture publisher [V. Vale]( https://www.researchpubs.com/about/), collaborating with other artists to put up a show about wills (as in will and testament) and performing in her new band Dingbat Superminx. \r\n\r\nKrusty says that cannabis helps get her in the zone and work through the initial humps that unavoidably come with making art. “In the beginning it’s always like, ‘Oh, this looks stupid. I wanna give up,’” she says. “But if you smoke a little you can keep going. … It makes your ego shut up for a minute so your brain can be more child-like and full of wonder.” \r\n\r\nShe goes on to describe cannabis’s ability to let her brain connect seemingly disparate concepts, a phenomenon that scientists call divergent thinking—and which is often thought of as the foundation of human creativity.\r\n\r\n“[Cannabis] helps you collage and mix the elements of the world more easily. The barriers between ideas don't seem as important—or they show themselves to be limits that you put on what ideas can go together,” she says, adding “I’m a sativa girl.”\r\n\r\nKrusty writes everything down when smoking—her preferred consumption method. “Have a little field note book and a pen that you like to draw with,” she advises. “I literally make a line and follow it and turn it into something. Do a scribble or a blob of paint or two and try to make it into a creature or a scene.”\r\n\r\nFor new consumers, Krusty offers this piece of advice: “Don’t think, ‘Oh, I’m going to get stoned now and wait for my brain to produce these amazing things.’ [Cannabis] is a tool to use on the ideas you already have—to let them free.”\r\n\r\nKrusty’s website: [www.krustywheatfield.com](http://www.krustywheatfield.com/)\r\n\r\nKrusty’s Instagram: [@krustywheatfield](https://www.instagram.com/krustywheatfield/)\r\n\r\n\r\n### 3. Dmitry Bikkinin, Cinematography & Photography\r\n\r\n![Dmitry Bikkinin says marijuana helps him see things he normally wouldn't while filming and editing](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/articles-5a53b186100a820006562f54-3ef8493d-13af-4004-b388-a9371097b956/original.png)\r\n\r\nDmitry Bikkinin is a San Francisco-based cinematographer and photographer, who also happens to work for HelloMD. When he’s not at work, he focuses on narrative and documentary film as well as contemporary and black-and-white photography. \r\n\r\nFor Dmitry, incorporating cannabis into his creative process happened naturally because it helped him get “in the zone.” He says, “Cannabis helps me see things I normally wouldn’t see,” and adds that marijuana helps him pick up patterns and reflections in his photographs more easily.\r\n\r\nIn addition, cannabis helps Dmitry block out extraneous concepts in his black-and-white photographs. “Instead of looking and seeing the content of [a picture], you see the shapes,” he explains. \r\n\r\nDmitry’s creative pursuits require technical mastery of various moving elements—consider the different settings required for taking that perfect picture. He says that cannabis allows him to work intuitively, without second-guessing himself. “It gives me this untapped ability of good guessing,” he says. “[Cannabis] helps me slow down the time in my head to get all those [elements] together—expose it this way, frame it over there, get the focal length right—it's like, I know exactly what I’m doing.” \r\n\r\nDmitry prefers to use cannabis concentrates because they work quickly and are convenient. When he’s shooting, he prefers cannabis that’s more energizing. When he’s in the editing or post-production process, he prefers something with more indica characteristics. \r\n\r\nWhile Dmitry is a huge proponent of cannabis and the creative process, he says new users should already know their gear flawlessly in order to be successful. \r\n\r\nDmitry’s website: [www.dbikk.com](http://dbikk.format.com/#1)\r\n\r\nDmitry’s Twitter: [@dmbikk](https://twitter.com/dmbikk)\r\n\r\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Artists like Bob Marley and Lady Gaga have linked their creative process to their cannabis consumption, but is cannabis really a key to their creativity? Yes and no, depending on how you ask the question.\n\nSome people feel more free and relaxed when they consume cannabis, making them more able to embrace the creative process. Cannabis can also help people focus better on the task at hand, such as painting or songwriting, allowing them to be more productive than they might have without the assistance of cannabis. \n\n### Research Shows Spike in Creativity\n\nIn addition to all of these surface level benefits, studies may have linked cannabis directly to a spike in creativity. One of the first studies on the subject of cannabis and creativity, conducted back in the 1970s, found that cannabis was linked to more original thoughts. More recent studies have highlighted THC, the most plentiful active cannabinoid in marijuana, as the crux for an increase in creativity. \n\nRELATED: [TOP TEN TRENDS FOR 2017](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/58756d23772f3e0008ef0ece/top-10-cannabis-trends-for-2017)\n\nA [study from University College in London](https://www.theweedblog.com/cannabis-increase-creativity/) found that cannabis consumption was linked to an increase in divergent thinking, a process that is closely tied to creativity. The study looked at two groups of people, one with high levels of creativity at the start of the study and one with lower levels of creativity. The study focused on people who were regular cannabis users, consuming marijuana at least 15 days a month. The study looked at different activities that monitored divergent thinking, both while the participants consumed cannabis and while they did not. It found that cannabis stimulated more divergent thinking in the group of people with lower levels of creativity to begin with, but did not provide any major changes to the group with already high levels of creativity. \n\n### Dosing & Cannabis\n\nThe study included relatively small doses of cannabis, with only a 10% THC concentration in the strain of cannabis was used. Researchers believed that it was the low dose of THC that helped stimulate creativity, but higher doses would have not had the same effect. This study, however, is just one of the few in the very limited body of research regarding cannabis and creativity. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en) \n\nAnother possible explanation of why cannabis leads to more creativity could be the extensive [endocannabinoid system](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system). Cannabis interacts with the endocannabinoid system, which is also closely tied to the functioning of the brain, and it is thought that cannabis consumption allows neurons in the brain to fire in a less inhibited manner. This lack of inhibition could be responsible for a freer flow of ideas while consuming cannabis. It could also stimulate creativity through decreasing the amount of mundane everyday thoughts that can cloud the brain, allowing creativity to blossom. \n\n### Your Brain on Cannabis\n\n[Marijuana also promotes activity](https://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~issues/articles/18.2_Talise_J_Marijuana_1.html) in the frontal lobe by increasing cerebral blood flow. The frontal lobe of the brain is partially responsible for creative drive because of the connection between neuron output and the frontal lobe. The frontal lobe is also responsible for divergent thinking, which was the factor measured in the University College study to determine levels of creativity. Cannabis’ ability to stimulate blood flow to the frontal lobe and allow neurons to fire in a more uninhibited way are just a few of the potential scientific explanations for the creative prowess that cannabis appears to bestow upon people. \n\nWhat we do know for sure, however, is that cannabis has been used by artists for thousands of years to help provide them with the proper mindset to create art. Cannabis allows people to live in the moment and embrace new thoughts as they come to them. People feel less inhibited on cannabis because they are able to relax and connect more deeply with themselves and their surroundings. If you are feeling a lack of creative stimulation, you may want to give cannabis a try because it could be the key to unlocking your full creative potential. \n\n_____________________________________________________________________\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Chris, one of our newest HelloMD Guest Bloggers, spent years as a seasoned management consultant professional before embracing medical marijuana fully. Below he tells his story of how he overcame his own stigma and found himself squarely in the middle of the cannabis industry.\r\n\r\n**My Cannabis Journey**\r\n\r\nI grew up during the “Just Say No,” era. If you’re unfamiliar, this was a national campaign spearheaded by then First Lady, Nancy Reagan. In this campaign, all non-prescription drugs were described as dangerous. There’s a famous ad showing an egg in a frying pan with the ominous voice-over stating “this is your brain on drugs.” It was pretty powerful stuff. \r\n\r\nYou have to remember this is long before we could simply do a Google search to find our own information. And ironically, this “Just Say No,” framing lead to a strengthening of prescription drugs, more on that later. \r\n\r\n**How a Smart, Nerdy, Church Kid Opens His Eyes**\r\n\r\nI was the “nerdy, smart and athletic” kid in a family of creatives. I learned to write code on my Texas Instruments 99/4A computer (a lot of you probably didn’t even know TI made computers, right?), and I was pretty good at playing football if I must say so myself. I didn’t fit in with my family, but I was active in church and I believed the culture of drugs was bad. \r\n\r\nDuring high school, I had the opportunity to live in Europe for 4 years. Here I learned to drive in Germany, ski on a glacier in Switzerland and I even bartered with locals in the markets in Tunisia. Living in Europe opened my eyes because the Europeans don’t have the same cultural confusion surrounding drugs or alcohol. People drank beer more than water. None of the people my age were terrified of marijuana and they hadn’t grown up hearing that marijuana fries your brain. In fact, it seemed everywhere I went in Europe the most creative and interesting people used marijuana. This was the start of my personal quest to question everything I’d learned about marijuana. Fast forward to the age of the internet. I had become a father and even spent two years as Christian preacher. After being a preacher, I was a regular volunteer at my church and then I was even in banking for awhile. In short, I became a respectable adult. \r\n\r\nMy Mom was an artist and she used cannabis and I was always ashamed of that. When I had my own kids, I had a hard conversation with my Mom about not smoking cannabis in front of the kids. But my curiosity about marijuana had never been satiated. So I began to do a little research on marijuana in the United States. For example, I learned, according to Professor Barney Warf, as a smokable product, cannabis made its way into the United States during the Mexican Revolution, which gave it the reputation as “colored-person’s drug.” Chillingly, I learned it started to become known marijuana (rather the cannabis) during a time of anti-immigration sentiment because it underscored the “Mexican-ness” of the drug. Basically, our culture’s demonization of marijuana was based on xenophobia and only helped prescription drug companies and alcohol companies. \r\n\r\nAs I became more involved in the cannabis business three years ago, I really began to see the importance of creating a new cultural perception regarding cannabis. Cannabis has proven medical benefits. But there’s more to it than that. I started thinking about my Mom and how she used cannabis as an artist to tap into her creativity. \r\n\r\n**A Well-Lived, Respectable, Creative Life** \r\n\r\nI started thinking about how cannabis not only heals people, it often even provides opportunities for them to be better at what they do, more energized, more creative, etc. It's not far different than sitting down with a friend to consume alcohol. So, when I co-founded ClubM, I looked for business partners who thought the same as we did because people using marijuana legally shouldn’t feel shame. It’s no more shameful than someone legally sitting at a bar having a beer. \r\n\r\nMy personal mission of “Just Say No-To Cannabis Confusion” has been in development all of my life, but it’s really been in the last few years that I really became to understand the importance of leading the charge on this issue. That’s why [ClubM](http://www.joinclubm.com/) is built around the idea of making legalized use of marijuana part of a creative, respectable lifestyle. It’s important that the cannabis community come together on this issue and lead together. There’s nothing wrong with a life that is pain-free and creative. That’s a well-lived, respectable and creative life worth having. \r\n\r\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Others are concerned about how it affects their brain and lungs—if they're smoking. So, what's the answer? Is it safe to consume marijuana daily? If so, is it something you _should_ do? Here's our list of pros and cons of marijuana use on a daily basis.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en) \n\n### Consuming Marijuana Every Day: Pros\n\nIn addition to helping people cope with things like digestive disorders and depression, cannabis is also good for the management of regular aches and pains. This is one of the main reasons that people consume it on a daily basis. Some even think of cannabis, and especially the cannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) as a preventative substance, like a vitamin, and so consume it daily. Here are some marijuana pros to consider.\n\n#### Daily Cannabis Consumption Helps Cope With Pain\n\nFor thousands of years, marijuana has been used as an effective treatment for everything from [chronic pain](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55a5559d6237660006250000/marijuana-nips-pain-in-the-bud)\nto [menstrual cramps](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55dcd66a3961660006470000/marijuana-brings-relief-to-women-suffering-from-pms-symptoms). For some pain sufferers, marijuana can offer formidable pain relief benefits with none of the [dangerous side\neffects of painkillers—over the counter or prescribed by a doctor](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55c91db33934390006220000/cannabis-may-be-safer-than-opioids-for-managing-pain).\n\nStudies are now showing that pain sufferers who take opioids for their ailments [prefer marijuana and say that the plant gives them comparable pain relief](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/58c731c766f73a578ef78e50/science-backs-cannabis-as-a-replacement-to-opioids) without opioids’ scary side effects. \n\n#### Marijuana May Make You More Creative\n\nWhen it comes to letting the creative juices flow, [smoking marijuana can help some people get creative](https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/psychology-masala/201204/cannabis-and-creativity). In light of this, it's used daily by [many people in creative professional fields, like music and art](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a53b186100a820006562f54/meet-3-artists-who-use-cannabis-to-spark-their-creativity). While marijuana doesn’t stimulate creativity for everyone, it can certainly help you come up with new ideas and think outside the box more than you typically would.\n\n#### Marijuana Can Help Regulate Blood Sugar & Weight Gain\n\nDespite that old stereotype of stoners getting the munchies and becoming fat on unhealthy food binges, research shows that everyday marijuana consumers are actually healthier than previously thought. According to a study published in the _American Journal of Epidemiology_, [people who use marijuana daily have a lower risk of obesity](https://aje.oxfordjournals.org/content/early/2011/08/24/aje.kwr200.abstract) than people who don't consume cannabis.\n\nAdditionally, a study in the _American Journal of Medicine_ showed that [regular cannabis users have thinner waists and lower insulin levels](http://healthland.time.com/2013/05/21/marijuana-the-next-diabetes-drug/) than their cannabis-free peers. Because of this, daily cannabis consumption may be a good option for people struggling to maintain a healthy weight, it just may take a bit of experimentation to see which cannabis strains and products don’t stimulate your appetite. \n\n### Consuming Marijuana on a Daily Basis: Cons\n\nWhile consuming cannabis daily offers some folks many positive effects including pain relief and enhanced creativity, there are some marijuana cons that you should be aware of as well. \n\n#### Smoking Marijuana Daily Increases the Risk of Respiratory Illness\n\nWhile there are many ways of consuming marijuana, people who choose to smoke it may experience [forms of respiratory illness](http://www.webmd.com/mental-health/news/20091015/daily-pot-smokers-court-health-risks?page=2), such as chronic bronchitis, chronic coughing, wheezing and higher-than-normal levels of sputum. Studies have also shown a [potential link between regular marijuana inhalation and upper respiratory tract cancers](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2516340/), although the results have been mixed and often contradictory. If this is something that concerns you, try a smoke-free way of consuming cannabis including tinctures, edibles or topicals.\n\n#### Smoking Marijuana Can Damage Lungs in the Long Term\n\nAccording to the [American Lung Association, marijuana smoke can damage lung health](http://www.lung.org/stop-smoking/smoking-facts/marijuana-and-lung-health.html?referrer=https://www.google.com/). Additionally, since marijuana smokers generally hold their breath longer and inhale more deeply than people who smoke cigarettes, there’s a risk that marijuana smokers may actually be exposed to more tar than cigarette smokers, though the carcinogens released from cigarettes are different than cannabis.\n\nBut anyone concerned about this aspect of consuming marijuana should opt for consumption methods like edibles or vaporizers, which offer the medicinal effects of the plant without the harmful effects smoking marijuana can have on the lungs.\n\n#### Marijuana Can Raise Your Heart Rate\n\nAccording to research, [marijuana raises the resting heart rate of people who use it frequently](http://www.livescience.com/45087-marijuana-heart-problems-deaths.html).\nWhile this isn’t a problem for healthy folks, it may be dangerous for people who have risk factors such as heart disease, arrhythmias or a family history of heart disease. In light of this, people suffering from any form of heart disease should consult a doctor and review their symptoms before getting involved in daily marijuana use.\n\n#### Excess Use of Cannabis May Disrupt Learning\n\nAccording to a 2011 study, it's possible that [excess cannabis use can impair verbal learning and problem solving](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3037578/). But if cannabis consumption stops, these effects generally last for only three weeks. It’s worth keeping in mind, though, that these symptoms are most pronounced in people who consume large amounts of cannabis on a regular basis.\n\nResearch now is supporting the thinking that cannabis doesn’t lead to IQ decline and that older studies that suggested it did didn’t account for other factors such as mental illness, alcohol use and socioeconomic status. \n\nRELATED: [DOES SMOKING MARIJUANA MAKE YOU STUPID?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56d69af2a6d8a5000c00002c/does-smoking-marijuana-make-you-stupid)\n\n### How to Decide How Much Cannabis Is Right for You\n\nThe decision about whether to smoke or ingest cannabis every day is a highly personal one. Cannabis has many well-known medicinal effects and has been shown time and time again to be a healthier and safer treatment option for a wide variety of [anxiety and mood\ndisorders](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55fc4eea3063390006b90000/cannabis-for-anxiety-and-stress-disorders), as well as [physical symptoms like muscle spasms](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55b156f433303700060f0000/easing-muscle-spasms-with-medical-marijuana). Even people who don't suffer from these symptoms often enjoy consuming marijuana on a daily basis. While you should always talk to your doctor before adopting a daily marijuana regimen, this is a valid option for many consumers.\n\nBut it's important to keep in mind that there are also risks to everyday marijuana usage, although they’re less conclusive than the noted benefits. Daily marijuana smokers may suffer from lung disease.
