But even if casual dating is on the rise, that alone doesn’t make first dates any less stressful. Luckily, cannabis can be a great tool for managing all of those first-date jitters. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nThere’s been quite a bit of research looking into the effectiveness of marijuana to treat anxiety. According to one study by Vanderbilt University Medical Center, our endocannabinoid system (ECS) may regulate anxiety by “dampening” excitatory signals. And some researchers are looking into the way the marijuana compound cannabidiol (CBD) interacts with CB1 receptors in the brain to help manage anxiety.\n\nSo, if you’re feeling a little anxious about your upcoming date, maybe a bit of cannabis could be exactly what you need to stay calm and relaxed so you can make a great first impression. \n\n### How to Incorporate Cannabis Into a First Date\n\nIncorporating cannabis into a first date is a very personal way to jumpstart a potential relationship. This is especially true if you rely on marijuana for medical reasons. It’s important to make sure the people you spend time with understand and embrace that. If marijuana is a vital part of your day, knowing your date is comfortable with cannabis consumption is a good thing to find out early on. \n\nNow, it’s important to remember that not everyone is a cannabis connoisseur like you might be. Just like a person who doesn’t drink alcohol may not want to go to a bar for a first date, there may be people out there who simply aren’t into the idea of consuming cannabis.\n\nThat’s OK. Make sure you communicate with your date before you meet up if you want cannabis to be a part of your activities so they aren’t taken by surprise. \n\nIf you’ve talked to your date about cannabis, and they’re into the idea, here are some fun, elevated date night ideas. \n\n### Pack a Picnic With a Cannabis-Infused Beverage\n\nForego the crowds at a trendy restaurant or the same old bar, and instead opt for a blanket, lots of snacks and a cannabis-infused beverage outside. A picnic can be a very cute and simple first date. Plus, the planning doesn’t have to be complicated. Pick any park in town, and buy a smorgasbord of options from the deli counter. \n\nInstead of a bottle of wine, make a refreshing cannabis-infused beverage, and bring it with you to serve. If you want to add an element of fun and surprise to the date, each person should bring a couple items of their own to contribute to the food spread.\n\nPicnics are a low-key and easy way to get to know a person. Because one thing’s for sure: You can tell a lot about a person by their food choices. \n\n### Harness the Marijuana Giggles at a Comedy Show \n\nIt’s no secret that cannabis can give you the giggles. And there’s nothing wrong with laughing a lot during a first date. A person’s sense of humor is a good thing to learn about early on. Pregame a comedy show with a joint or have a cannabis-infused mocktail before you head to the event. For extra giggles, try an energizing marijuana strain like Super Lemon Haze, which has also been reported to act as an aphrodisiac—perfect for date night. \n\n### Make a Marijuana-Infused Dinner at Home\n\nIf you feel comfortable enough, invite your first date over to your place for a home- cooked meal. Working together to make dinner in the kitchen can be a great compatibility test. If you can cook a meal together, it’s probably a good sign that a second date may be in order. \n\nCooking dinner with cannabis can be as simple as adding 15 mL of your preferred marijuana tincture to a salad dressing or pasta sauce. Or whip up a healthy dish with this recipe for cannabis-infused stuffed artichokes. If you want to feel relaxed but not too impaired, use a tincture with more CBD than tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). This will give you the relaxing benefits of cannabis without feeling too high to make good conversation.\n\n### Go to a Cannabis & Art Class\n\nNowadays, not only are first dates more common, but options for cannabis-friendly date nights are also more plentiful than ever. In just about every state that’s legalized marijuana, there are cannabis-friendly classes for yoga, painting, ceramics, cooking and more. If your date is a cannabis connoisseur like you, this is a great option for a fun and relaxing first date with likeminded people. \n\nHead to a [Puff, Pass & Paint](https://puffpassandpaint.com/) class or to any other cannabis-friendly event. Be sure to bring some of your [favorite cannabis products](https://www.hellomd.com/products) in tow. Just don’t forget to read the event details to be sure your marijuana products meet the event’s rules.\n\nIf you aren’t sure how to find cannabis events near you, it’s easier than you think. Just head to [Eventbrite](https://www.eventbrite.com/) and search for cannabis events. \n\nMake your first date memorable by incorporating a little cannabis. And if your date isn’t comfortable with cannabis consumption, you can always consume a low dose of marijuana at home before your date to calm your nerves.\n\nHave you incorporated marijuana into a first date? Researchers eventually concluded that the illnesses had to do with a breakdown of the immune system. They eventually gave the syndrome a name: acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), but they were still at a loss on how to treat it. \n\nThis, compounded by the government’s slow response to the crisis, meant that there were no specific drugs to address AIDS, and few available ones to deal with the consequences of immune system breakdown. As a result, the LGBTQ community suffered tremendously: From January 1981 to March 1982, there were [290 reported cases](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.3322/canjclin.32.6.330) of compromised immune systems in the U.S. (the terms HIV and AIDS didn’t exist yet), the majority of which occurred in men with same-sex partners. By 1989, [100,000 people in the U.S. were living with AIDS]( https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00001442.htm). \n\nFaced with this epidemic, people with AIDS (PWA) and their allies, many of whom were also pioneers of the gay liberation movement, began to mobilize. “Almost overnight, gay rights activists became AIDS activists, fighting not for equality, but for existence,” writes Clinton A. Werner in his 2001 essay, “[Medical Marijuana and the AIDS Crisis](http://www.cannabis-med.org/iacm/data/pdf/2001-03-04-2.pdf).” \n\nPWA and their supporters began to research possible treatments in other countries, where guidelines weren’t as stringent as those set by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). By 1987, the first “buyer’s clubs” for these treatments emerged in San Francisco and New York, giving people access to these alternative therapies. \n\nIn the same year, the FDA also approved a drug called azidothymidine (AZT). While it was effective and manageable for some patients, for others its side effects only seemed to worsen the already debilitating symptoms of AIDS, which included nausea, fatigue and cachexia. \n\n### LGBTQ Activists Turn to Illicit Marijuana to Help Those Suffering From AIDS \n\nMarijuana has been around for centuries, and many seem to be naturally attuned to the plant’s benefits. So, it should come as no surprise that cannabis’s anti-emetic and pain-relieving properties were quickly used throughout the AIDS community for symptom relief, according to the [autobiography of Dennis Peron](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009YBJSAO?ref_=kcr_store_sample), the late marijuana activist. However, cannabis was—unsurprisingly—one of the therapies that buyer’s clubs weren’t allowed to sell. \n\nDennis, who was a prominent figure in the San Francisco LGBTQ community at the time, watched many of his friends succumb to AIDS early on in the epidemic. He notes one incident in which an acquaintance was suffering in the hospital, unable to consume marijuana for fear of repercussion from the hospital’s staff. \n\nDennis and his friends paid him a visit, barred the doors to his room and sat with him all day, smoking cannabis and keeping him company. He recalls the incident as a turning point, in the way he and his friends viewed the plant. \n\n“Suddenly we realized that this oh-so-controversial weed wasn’t just a safer alternative to liquor and hard drugs as we had been using it, but was actually a real therapeutic medicine in its own right. … I saw that the AIDS crisis had made this obvious to anyone who thought about it for even two seconds,” he writes.\n\nRELATED: [MARIJUANA’S STORIED HISTORY: FROM ANCIENT TIMES TO NOW](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5ad6746f049b4f000a64e890/marijuanas-storied-history-from-ancient-times-to-now)\n\n### New Drug Program Allows AIDS Patients to Access Cannabis Legally\n\nDennis and his friends weren’t the only ones attuned to how cannabis could help people living with AIDS. Bob Randall, a glaucoma patient, wasn’t a part of the LGBTQ community, but he was a strong marijuana advocate and credited the plant with helping him keep his vision. \n\nBob became the first legal medical marijuana patient in the U.S. via the Compassionate Investigational New Drug (IND) program, which allowed the use of drugs not yet approved by the FDA under special circumstances. \n\nWhen the epidemic hit, a person with AIDS named Steve L. reached out to Bob; he wanted to gain admission into the Compassionate IND program for cannabis, with his doctor as a sponsor. The process took months, but Steve was approved and received his cannabis on Jan. 25, 1990—just 18 days before he would succumb to the disease.\n\nBob wrote an obituary for Steve in _High Times_ magazine; it was noticed by Barbara and Kenny Jenks, a young couple with AIDS. Kenny was a hemophiliac who contracted HIV from a blood transfusion and then subsequently transmitted it on to his wife. They were low-income with few health-care resources. They’d been using cannabis to help with their symptoms until their trailer was raided, and Kenneth was sent to jail. \n\nIn Bob’s eyes, Barbara and Kenny were the perfect spokespeople for promoting the use of medical marijuana for AIDS. They were a young heterosexual, monogamous couple that the majority of society could empathize with. \n\nTogether with Bob, the couple was approved for the Compassionate IND program, and as a group they started the Marijuana/AIDS Research Service (MARS), an organization that was specifically dedicated to helping AIDS patients navigate the Compassionate IND program’s complicated application process. \n\nMARS was met with enthusiasm in the AIDS community, and the FDA began to receive many applications. However, in 1991, the Compassionate IND program was closed—inciting furor in the public and helping fuel support for Dennis Peron’s next steps. \n\n### Dennis Peron Drafts the Nation’s First Medical Marijuana Initiative: Proposition P \n\nThe AIDS epidemic pushed the concept of medical cannabis into the public’s consciousness. While Bob and the Jenkses fought for medical marijuana access via the federal government, Dennis’s partner Jonathan West was in the late stages of AIDS and using cannabis to manage his symptoms. The police received a tip that Dennis was selling cannabis and proceeded to raid the couple’s home.\n\nDennis was arrested, and at his trial, Jonathan testified that the cannabis found in their home was his, and that he was using it for medical purposes. Based on this testimony, Dennis was released. Sadly, however, Jonathan passed away two weeks later. \n\nThe whole ordeal inspired Dennis to fiercely advocate for medical marijuana access and legalization. Soon after his release from prison, Dennis drafted Proposition P, which he describes as “a eulogy to my Jonathan and to all the young gay men lost to this epidemic.” \n\n[Proposition P](http://www.marijuanalibrary.org/Proposition_P_Nov_1991.html) was the nation’s first medical marijuana initiative. It urged the city of San Francisco to make enforcing cannabis laws the lowest priority. It also urged the state of California to restore “hemp medical preparations” to the list of available medicines in California and listed a broad category of symptoms for which cannabis could be used.\n\nProposition P passed with 80% of the vote. \n\n### The Nation’s First Medical Marijuana Dispensary Is Born in Dennis Peron’s Garage\n\nNow out of jail, Dennis and a few collaborators were making runs around San Francisco, delivering cannabis to PWA. Overwhelmed by demand, they saw a need for a distribution center. \n\nThinking about the buyers’ clubs that already existed for alternative therapies, Dennis wondered if one could be created specifically with the idea of providing marijuana to PWA. Even with the passing of Proposition P, such a concept was still illegal; but he wondered, what if he did it anyway, got arrested and subsequently filed a court case arguing that selling cannabis was a [medical necessity](http://norml.org/marijuana/medical/item/medical-necessity-defense)? \n\nIf Dennis and his collaborators won—and he believed they had a decent chance, they would set a new precedent that would legalize the distribution of cannabis to PWA. Gutsy as ever, and riding the wave of their recent success, Dennis and his team set out to do just that. \n\nThey set up a store in his garage and invited a media outlet to film their first sale. The story was aired on public television.\n\nThey waited for the police to arrive—except the cops never did. Instead, what they got was PWA contacting the news station to find out where the club was and how they could buy cannabis.\n\nAnd just like that, the Cannabis Buyers’ Club, the nation’s first medical marijuana dispensary, was born.\n\n### Public Support Turns Proposition 215 Into Law, Making Medical Marijuana Legal\n\nAccording to Dennis’ memoirs, once the group realized that the San Francisco police weren’t coming to get them, they set out to provide medical marijuana as well as use the Cannabis Buyers’ Club to shape public opinion. \n\nThe dispensary was a press magnet, and the activists gave the media everything they needed to cover a good story: freedom to film, good visuals and most importantly, many PWA who had stories about how the plant was helping them. \n\n“This ongoing series of reports helped synchronize public opinion with the needs of the AIDS patient community directly. These interviews reinforced the crucial message that marijuana is medicine,” writes Dennis.\n\nDennis knew that if there was ever any hope for legalizing medical marijuana in California, he’d need the public’s approval. \n\nThe Cannabis Buyers’ Club eventually grew too big to be contained in Dennis’ little apartment. The club moved to a larger location in San Francisco, where Dennis could cater to more patients and foster a community of like-minded activists. \n\nIt was here, through a network of patients, activists and cannabis suppliers, that Proposition 215, a California law that legalized medical marijuana, would come into fruition. On Nov. 5, 1996, California voters approved the law with 55.6% of the vote. Oregon, Alaska and Washington would do the same two years later. \n\nBy garnering public support and cleverly using their networks, LGBTQ activists led by Dennis Peron were able to change the public’s perception and bring medical marijuana to the masses. These folks were willing to go to great means—facing jail time and even death threats—to ensure that patients could access the medicine they needed. It’s a struggle that we easily forget today, but one that we should remember and honor, especially as we navigate this new era of cannabis consumption. \n\nPhoto credit: [Cannabis Reports](https://www.flickr.com/photos/cannabisreports/)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56201c206430320006bb0000/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. It was ritual. It was bonding. But it wasn’t even remotely thought of as medicine.\n\nFast forward to today. We call the plant by its correct name: cannabis. We talk about cannabis’s health and wellness benefits, especially for women. And now many of us are navigating how to talk to our kids about what was once taboo. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Small Pieces of Marijuana Information Work Best\n\nMy own kids are 11 and 14. My daughter finds it amusing that her mother “markets that weed thing.” My son is weary of hearing about “all that cannabis stuff.” They both roll their eyes when I go into my “cannabis is medicine” spiel, reminding them that they shouldn’t try it until their brains are fully formed when they’re 25 years old. “We know, Mom,” they say.\n\nThese conversations are a far cry from what I thought I’d be saying to my kids about cannabis. I want to convey that cannabis is normal, natural and beneficial when used responsibly by adults. And remind them that marijuana is only administered to children with serious health conditions. \n\n“You don’t need to tell them everything all at once, and it doesn’t have to be about you,” says Laurie Light, a cannabis educator and entrepreneur. Laurie consumes full-spectrum cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) to stabilize her moods, manage PMS and get restful sleep. “It’s similar to ‘the sex talk.’ Give them small, digestible bits of age-appropriate information over time,” she advises.\n\nLaurie also suggests viewing short, educational videos that explain the science of cannabis together to spark and further the conversation. \n\n“If they are older, you can watch Sanjay Gupta’s “Weeds” episodes together as a family. Educating my girls about the truth of this plant and about my use is very important to me,” Laurie says. “I talk openly talk with my two teenage daughters about cannabis’s legality, it’s history, it’s medical properties and safety profile. I have taught them about the endocannabinoid system and how cannabis works in the human body.” \n\nRELATED: [HOW TO TALK TO YOUR TEENS ABOUT CANNABIS](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5730f375134911000800006f/how-to-talk-to-your-teen-about-cannabis)\n\n### Plain Talk With Younger Kids About Cannabis\nStephanie Kerns is a brand representative for Lunchbox Alchemy, an Oregon-based edibles company, and is the artist/painter Vibrant Deity. She suffers from debilitating endometriosis. After many surgeries and extensive treatments in a pain clinic, she finally found cannabis and says it saved her life. She consumes hemp-derived CBD edibles in the morning and dabs strong THC extracts to relieve extreme nausea, pain and inflammation. This cannabis regimen means Stephanie was able to replace the 17 medicines she was prescribed for her condition.\n\n“I’m open with my kids. I explain that cannabis is a medicine and also a vegetable. It can be eaten and juiced, and is very healing and nourishing,” Stephanie says, explaining how she talks to her children, ages three and five. “I also say that some people don’t understand what cannabis is, and that’s OK. I tell them that in our culture it isn’t studied or used in spiritual practices like it has been in other places for thousands of years, so most Americans don’t understand what it really is.”\nStephanie tells her children that at some point, someone might say something negative about “how mommy uses cannabis medicine. “I tell them that it is OK; everyone has the right to their own opinions even if it is not based in reality.”\n### Tips on How to Talk About Cannabis With Your Kids\nSumming up the advice I’ve heard from numerous moms, consider doing the following when you talk with your kids about cannabis:\n* Use age-appropriate content including educational videos, articles and books. Let their questions guide your conversations, but don’t shy away from starting the conversation about cannabis yourself.\n* Don’t feel like you have to tell all, but don’t lie about your use of cannabis either. Honesty is truly the best policy, but be mindful about what you reveal and when can be more comfortable at first.\n* Don’t use scare tactics or threats to try to keep your kids away from cannabis. Kids will, by nature, gravitate toward the mysterious or forbidden. \n* Be matter-of-fact in your approach. The less of a big deal you make of cannabis, and the more normal and average it seems, the less of an issue your kids will make of it.\nSays Stephanie, “Kids are going to learn one way or another, but if you take a scientific and educational approach they will understand.”\nLaurie points out that as laws change, children should hear the truth from you, not get their information about cannabis from their friends. \n\nSays Laurie, “If or when you’re ready, help end the stigma surrounding responsible adult use of cannabis, and tell your kids about your consumption and why it’s a healthy life choice for you.” \n\nPhoto credit: [London Scout](https://unsplash.com/@scoutthecity)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56201c206430320006bb0000/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. And one way to make that time outside even better is by combining it with a little cannabis. Of course, marijuana is great for any season, but there’s something really special about enjoying it outside in the bright summer sunshine. Whether you live by the seaside or head there a couple of times each summer, the feeling of a sunny day spent on the sand never gets old. If you’re planning a beach trip, odds are you’ve already packed an umbrella, the cooler and tasty food to throw on the grill. But have you thought about packing some cannabis to take along with you down to the shoreline?\n\nRELATED: [5 WAYS TO USE CANNABIS FOR SUMMER SKINCARE](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/57b73a13066417000be2b2db/5-ways-to-use-cannabis-for-summer-skincare)\n\nBeaches can be windy and so a joint probably isn’t the best choice here—lighting and keeping it lit can be frustrating at best. Forego that annoyance and bring a portable vape pen instead. Vaporizing cannabis will not only be easier than smoking, but it will be much more discreet as well. \n\nIf you want a great vaporizer for all day use, try the [Dosist Bliss Mini Pen](https://www.hellomd.com/products/5af62b841bf83e0007fdd99b/bliss-mini). These convenient, single-use pens are recyclable and vibrate when you inhale a 2.25 mg dose. \n\nIf you prefer not to inhale your cannabis, infuse a smoothie, and bring it to the beach with you instead. You can follow our [cannabis breakfast smoothie recipe](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5886a6af995293000c85f256/the-ultimate-cannabis-breakfast-smoothie), or add one of the many [tinctures](https://www.hellomd.com/products?category=Tinctures) we recommend to your favorite smoothie recipe.\n\nThere’s a marijuana tincture for every preference, from cannabidiol (CBD) only to high-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and every ratio in between. Simply add the proper dose according to your tolerance level. Not sure what your tolerance is for tinctures? Start slow with half a dropper’s worth or less. \n\n### Energize Your Hike With a Marijuana Edible or Vape Pen\n\nHiking is a wonderful way to combine physical activity and the great outdoors. Hiking through the woods can be a calming, moving meditation session with lots to see and appreciate. It forces you to be present in the moment, enjoying whatever happens to be in your line of vision along the way. There’s something about combining the effects of cannabis with the meditative nature of hiking that makes for a truly enjoyable experience for many people. But before mixing cannabis and hiking, there are a few things to consider. \n\nFirst, only consume cannabis during a hike if it’s a trail you’re comfortable and familiar with. If you’re trying a new or particularly challenging hike, perhaps skip the cannabis altogether. \n\nSecond, not every hiking trail is smoking-friendly. Some may have specific non-smoking policies that shouldn’t be ignored. As well, smoking in a dry, summer climate can pose a serious wildfire risk. Even if you think you’re being careful, a small piece of ember from the ash of a joint can ignite a fire. And even if there aren’t specific smoking policies, other hikers on the trail may not be into inhaling your second-hand smoke. \n\nIf you want to combine cannabis and hiking, try a non-smoking alternative by eating a tasty marijuana edible like [Satori’s Highbush Blueberries](https://www.hellomd.com/products/586590dbd5402d000882a2f9/highbush-blueberries-in-dark-chocolate) 30 minutes before you start the hike. Each blueberry contains about 2 mg of THC, so you have the ability to tailor the dose as you feel comfortable. \n\nIf you prefer more instant cannabis gratification, vaporizing might be a better option. With a vape pen, you won’t have to worry about starting a wildfire or intruding on those who may not like the smoke exposure. Try an uplifting sativa-dominant hybrid for immediate effects that will help motivate you through the hike, like [Absolute Xtracts’ Jack Herer vape pen cartridge](https://www.hellomd.com/products/5abc1a701bb06d000861408f/jack-herer). \n\n### Elevate Your Camping Trip With a Pre-Roll or Cannabis-Infused S’mores\n\nThere are few things better than camping in the summer. If you’re at the right campsite, you’ll escape from all of the light pollution of the city and fall asleep in the quiet solitude of nature. Throw some cannabis into that equation, and you’re in for a pretty picturesque and relaxing summer excursion. \n\nBring a pack of [Garden Society’s Hybrid Rosettes](https://www.hellomd.com/products/5abbf6051bb06d0008614056/rosettes-hybrid) to the campsite. Forget rolling papers and filters to roll your own joints; these cute packs of pre-rolled mini joints are so convenient, you may never roll your own joints again. Each pack comes with 10 mini pre-rolls made with cannabis cultivated in Sonoma County, CA.\n\nIf you’re going to be smoking joints while camping, here’s a pro tip: Bring a cup-holder ashtray. These are designed for portability and will keep all of your ash and joint filters in one place. \n\nIf you really want to elevate your camping experience, use a [Kiva Chocolate Bar](https://www.hellomd.com/products/577ef304edc879000b000093/chocolate-bar) when roasting s’mores on the campfire. These Kiva bars come in 5 mg pieces, with 100 mg total per bar. You can add as much or as little as you’d like. You can also always combine medicated and non-medicated chocolate if you prefer to microdose your cannabis. \n\nHave fun taking your cannabis consumption outside and enjoy that summer sun. \n\nPhoto credit: [Alvin Balemesa](https://unsplash.com/@alnbal)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56201c206430320006bb0000/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. That said, you still need to be able to get your foot in the door. And as with any other job you might interview for, this involves a little bit of preparation, research and the ability to present yourself well. \n\n### Do You Need to Be a Cannabis Expert to Work in the Industry?\n\nMost people we’ve interviewed and then hired haven’t worked in the cannabis industry before taking their position at HelloMD. You don’t need to know everything there is to know about the legal cannabis industry, but it’s important to do some research before your interview.\n\nFor instance, we’d expect you to have some understanding of the cannabis industry and its evolution. We’d also expect job candidates to be able to discuss cannabis basics—what we call [cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56201c206430320006bb0000/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana).\n\nDavid Hua, CEO and founder of [Meadow](https://getmeadow.com/), a company that builds dispensary software solutions for California’s cannabis industry, has been working in cannabis for years. When talking about what he looks for in new employees, David says, “It’s important that a potential candidate understands and respects the history of cannabis prohibition to help advocate for change. Be patient, but also have a sense of urgency. The learning curve within the cannabis industry is steep, but in a couple of years, you'll be an expert in an industry that will continue to evolve.”\n\n![David Hua founder of Meadow](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-22de7c61-7c6e-4cfd-9449-6880bce8ff0f/original.png)\n_David Hua, founder of Meadow_\n\n### Do Your Homework Before Applying to a Marijuana Business\n\nBeyond basic cannabis knowledge, you should also be familiar with the company itself. Understanding the history of the company, its evolution and who’s on the founding team is a great place to start. Also:\n\n* Be sure to check out people’s LinkedIn profiles.\n* Find and peruse the company’s Facebook page.\n* Go over any other social media channels they may use. \n\nDo you understand what the company does? Have you spent time on that company’s website, used its app or tried its software (if applicable)? If not, don’t bother showing up to the interview. It’s frustrating as an employer to spend time with a potential candidate who hasn’t spent any time understanding what the company does. \n\nYou should also understand the company’s mission and goals. If the company’s mission is to cater to the high-end cannabis connoisseur, do you relate to that?\n\nOr perhaps it’s a company that seeks to help medical patients with serious health conditions. Are you comfortable with their approach, messaging and how they connect with patients?\n\nIn another instance, a cannabis company may be laser focused on dominating a particular section of the market, and for them it’s simply about making money. Are you comfortable working for a company with that singular goal?\n\nWhatever the case may be, make sure you understand what the company’s founders are trying to achieve and that your values align with their goals. The cannabis industry is filled with people who start companies often driven by personal passion centered on, in my experience, one of three things:\n\n* A love of cannabis\n* A deep need to help people \n* The desire to make a lot of money \n\n### You Must Be a Good Fit for the Canna-Job or Willing to Work Your Way up\n\nIn most cases, employers would like job candidates to have an applicable skill set. In some instances, a company will be willing to train a new employee, but it will still be up to you to convince the team that you’d be a good fit for that specific job.\n\nLauren Sparacino, the HR manager at [Jetty Extracts](https://www.hellomd.com/brands/5890ded5519db3000cf0f665/jetty-extracts) says, “Depending on the open position, we look for different qualities in our applicants. Certainly, not everyone coming into the cannabis industry needs to have industry experience. It's actually interesting to see that some people who do have specific experience with cannabis are sometimes hesitant to highlight it in a résumé, which isn't surprising considering the historic prohibition. Sometimes experience is really valuable. For instance, in our lab, we appreciate people with cannabis extraction or other experience in a laboratory setting.”\n\nIf a job has a highly specific list of requirements that may require either a degree or a previous similar experience, don’t waste your time applying for that position. If you’re targeting a specific position, but don’t currently have the skills, try to figure out a way to get there. Go for extra training, volunteer your time or try to get a job on the ground floor, and see if there’s a way to work your way up. \n\nLauren adds, “All in all, we're looking for people who can work hard and who can be accountable. That's true across the company for whatever position we're trying to fill. At the end of the day, we want to assemble a team of individuals who care about the industry, about their role and about the other people in our company. That way, we can trust that we'll accomplish what we set out to do.”\n\n![Jetty Extracts team](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-16581619-3463-4d31-9396-9802ae07b4e4/original.png)\n_The team at Jetty_\n### Even Cannabis Companies Require an Articulate Résumé & Cover Letter\n\nYou’ve found the perfect job opening. Now it’s time to apply. Your cover letter and résumé are either your entry into an interview or the kiss of death. When we review cover letters and résumés, 99% are immediately deleted. That’s right, most are scanned and trashed due to poor grammar, terrible formatting or lack of an applicable skill set.\n\nFirst impressions matter. And if you can’t present well and follow instructions from the job post, unfortunately, the door closes—and fast.\n\nRELATED: [TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL JOB HUNTING IN THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5af76ed9b869a6000796595c/tips-for-successful-job-hunting-in-the-cannabis-industry)\n\nAshleigh, who leads our hiring as HelloMD’s director of operations, has the following résumé dos and don’ts for potential job applicants:\n\n**Do:**\n\n* Explain how your current skills or experience relate to the functions of the job and how you can help the company achieve its goals.\n* Tailor your existing résumé to the specific job listing if applicable.\n* Provide specific reasons as to why this job appeals to you and why you’re the right fit.\n* Write a brief cover letter and proofread it. \n\n**Don’t:**\n\n* List your main qualifications as “I love marijuana” or “I have a driver’s license/medical card.”\n* Say, “I’ve always wanted to work in the cannabis industry,” when asked what attracted you to apply for the job.\n* Ignore the directions in the job posting.\n* Email or call the company directly if the hiring manager asks you to submit an application through the website.\n\nTo add to Ashleigh’s résumé advice, Tim Condor, a co-founder of [Blackbird](https://www.blackbirdgo.com/menus), the cannabis distribution and last-mile delivery company, says, “Blackbird fields requests and inquiries from a high volume of job seekers. It’s absolutely vital that candidates stand out. However, we don't want someone to send a singing telegram. (OK, maybe we do.) But really, the best way to stand out in a sea of job requests is to be prepared with a thorough résumé and a thoughtful cover letter. \n\n“Demonstrate that you understand what your potential employer does. Talk about how you will be a good addition to the team. Please don't use phrases like, ‘I would like to help you out.’ Blackbird is an environment of collaboration. Everyone contributes. We share in the failures and in the successes. It’s vital that candidates convey their willingness to do the same.”\n\n### Not Landing Any Interviews? Get Involved in the Cannabis Industry \n\nIf you find yourself unable to land any cannabis industry interviews, another way to go about it is to get involved in local events and groups where many cannabis businesses spend their time. In our experience, the marijuana industry is built on a foundation of trusted relationships. Getting to know people who are already working in the industry may be helpful when seeking a job.\n\nIf you go to local events or join a cannabis group, you’re likely to see many of the same people again and again. Over time you’ll develop relationships that may come in handy during your job search. This strategy has worked for many people we know and getting involved in the local scene will also give you an inside track on who’s hiring.\n\nAnother great way to get involved is to volunteer your time. If you don’t have experience for a specific position, but have some skills you can put to use, why not offer them up? Volunteering may seem counterintuitive in what seems to be an industry awash in cash, but the reality is many cannabis businesses are short-handed and cash strapped. Volunteering allows you to show off your skills while building relationships and trust. It can also help you build your cannabis résumé. \n\n![HelloMD staff outing](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-d73463a0-3609-4116-9d08-f0886860d881/original.png)\n_The team at HelloMD_\n\n### How to Ace Your Cannabis Industry Interview\n\nIn your cannabis interview, do all of the things you would in any other industry interview:\n\n* Ask questions\n* Be positive\n* Don’t ever complain about former employers\n\nTrashing your old boss throws up a huge red flag. During a recent interview, a candidate not only complained about former employers, but she also told us everything she thought we were doing wrong and how she might single-handedly fix it. Every now and again, we run into someone with an air of entitlement or who seems a little too big for their own shoes. We value:\n\n* Flexibility\n* A spirit of collaboration\n* The willingness to go the extra mile \n\nAnother thing you should do in your interview is be up-front about the role of marijuana in your life. We’ve been surprised by how many people have felt uncomfortable telling us about their cannabis consumption. If you’re looking for a job in the cannabis industry, it’s helpful to be a cannabis consumer. However, in some positions this may not be a necessary qualification.\n\nIf your prospective employer asks how much cannabis you consume, and you’re an active cannabis consumer, we suggest sharing your honest answer about your consumption patterns. Also, be aware that in most professional environments, cannabis isn’t being consumed all day, every day. \n\nIf you’re not an active marijuana consumer, but have seen the plant positively affect someone around you, share this with your interviewer. Any personal connection to cannabis is a great thing to highlight in your interview (and cover letter, too). \n\nAs HelloMD has grown over the years, we’ve received hundreds of applications and interviewed scores of people interested in getting into the cannabis industry. I can easily say that most people don’t follow the most basic rules when it comes to submitting a résumé and completing a successful interview.\n\nAs an employer, it’s in our interest to hire the best job candidate, and mediocrity on any level is a non-starter. We understand nobody’s perfect. We all have strengths and weaknesses, but putting your best foot forward is going to give you the strongest chance of not only scoring an interview, but ultimately getting you the cannabis job you’ve been dreaming of.\n\nMain photo credit: [NeONBRAND](https://unsplash.com/@neonbrand)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56201c206430320006bb0000/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Marijuana plus fine dining—it’s hardly a new concept, but it’s part of a growing movement to educate cannabis consumers and showcase how you can get creative with the plant. Having a concrete safe space to consume as well as a curated, high-quality menu gives attendees a chance to come together and enjoy carefully paired marijuana-infused dishes. These marijuana culinary events prove cannabis edibles have come a long way from the dosed brownies and cookies you may have consumed in your youth. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nCanna-culinary events are designed to spark creativity and connection. They’re a wonderful way for seasoned marijuana consumers and the canna-curious to meet. Unlike an un-medicated dining experience in a restaurant, a canna-culinary event emphasizes collaboration during and after the meal prep.\n\nOver a dessert with infused-honey, a sweet partnership or new idea may bubble to the surface. Often, cannabis supper clubs host a cocktail event before the dinner begins, so people who may be a little nervous about trying an infused meal can relax before the food is served. \n\n### Elevated Supper Clubs Provide Cannabis Education \n\nCulinary marijuana events are about having fun, but they’re also about teaching attendees how to use cannabis in the kitchen in creative ways that works for various tolerance levels. Chefs will often address dosing, and the wisdom of “go low, go slow” in order for guests not to get overwhelmed by the powerful effects cannabis edibles can produce. \n\nChefs at cannabis culinary events typically tell attendees how many milligrams of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are in each plate, so diners can titrate their respective doses. Many chefs also create custom plates for each diner, so one person with a low tolerance can stay within their comfort zone while someone else who tolerates THC well can feel the plant’s effects. \n\nRather than heavy-hitting, couch lock-inducing edibles, cannabis supper clubs generally follow the lead of the low-dose movement. This way, guests get to enjoy the effects of cannabis and still socialize. THC doses in the range of 2.5–5 mg per person are common at these events and can yield more subtle effects. \n\nRELATED: [COOKING WITH CANNABIS](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56f9cbe5eb647f000800007f/cooking-with-cannabis)\n\n### The Gourmet Nature of Cannabis Supper Clubs \n\nContrary to the popular myth that marijuana consumers’ tastes run towards junk food like frozen pizzas, donuts and Doritos, diners who attend cannabis-infused supper clubs know they’re going to get gourmet dishes prepared by master chefs who use quality ingredients in their pairings. \n\nIncorporating lessons learned while he was a chef at Michelin-starred restaurants Mourad and Aziza, cannabis enthusiast Michael Magallanes now runs [San Francisco’s cannabis supper club Opulent Chef](https://www.opulentchef.com/). Michael creates tapas-style dishes and uses cannabis flowers, extracts and infused oils to showcase cannabis’s herbaceous nature in his food. In 2018, she began hosting Thursday Infused events at the [Naked Kitchen](http://nakedkitchensf.com/the-venue/), a quirky purple Victorian house in the heart of San Francisco’s Mission district.\n\n“It’s amazing to see participants smell wine and then smell cannabis—a lightbulb goes off,” Jamie says. By comparing the two, people better understand the link between aroma and flavor, which in turn enhances the dining experience. \n\nCannabis supper club hosts also get creative with their calendar, often choosing themes for their meals to add another dimension to the events. The Cannaisseur Series is one of the longest- running supper clubs in San Francisco, founded by chef Coreen Carroll and fiancé Ryan Bush. Previous dinner themes include Spring Quinox, Herbal Cheese Feast, Speakeasy Prohibition and Hightoberfest.\n\nThey’re currently selling tickers for their offering in time for Pride month, the [Wake-N-Bake Drag Brunch](https://cannaisseurseries.ticketleap.com/dragweedbrunch). Attendees can celebrate diversity alongside drag queens dressed to the nines for “wigs swigs and puffs.” \n\n### Be in the Know & Ready to Spend at Your Local Cannabis Culinary Event \n\nCannabis events are trending in major cities around the U.S. Even in places like New York, where marijuana possession is still restricted, [cannabis-infused dinners are held in secret, undisclosed locations](https://www.newyorker.com/culture/tables-for-two/an-underground-marijuana-dinner-party-grows-in-new-york). \n\nThese meals can be pricy, because a lot of work goes into a well-curated event with fresh farm-to-table food and organic, triple-tested-for-purity flowers and extracts. If you feel uncomfortable with the fact that they aren’t accessible to everyone, it’s worth seeing if the culinary cannabis event you’re interested in has a charitable element to their program. For example, San Francisco’s Thursday Infused series offers cannabis events for under $100, and also donates part of the proceeds from each event to local charities. \n\n### Find a Cannabis Supper Club Near You\n\nDue to more states legalizing recreational marijuana, it’s easier than ever for event organizers to offer an ongoing series of cannabis supper club evenings, instead of the one-off, pop-up dinner. While that’s also a viable and fun way to host an event, it’s helpful for those with busy schedules to have more than one chance to attend a canna-culinary evening. Regular, repeat opportunities for sharing a meal and learning about cooking with cannabis is also a great way to create community, whether folks are marijuana industry professionals or cannabis newbies. \n\nSee the following list for established cannabis supper clubs and groups that host pop-ups. Sign up early, though. One exciting new trend in cannabis recreation is wine and cannabis tours. These fun bus tours visit California’s best regions for growing both marijuana and wine. And they usually involve traditional wine tastings at vineyards or wineries, along with cannabis education, tastings and dispensary visits. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nCannabis and wine tours are a fantastic way to learn more about how each crop is grown, produced and enjoyed. They’re also a fun outing for those who like to consume wine and cannabis. If you live in California or are taking a trip to the Golden State, this is one of the best ways to explore wine and cannabis country.\n\nIf you’re thinking about taking a tour, we’ve got you covered with the details. Here are some of the best cannabis and wine tour options in California:\n\n### 1. Cannabis Tours: A Marijuana & Wine Tour for Advanced Cannabis Users \n\nTo better understand the cannabis-and-wine-tour phenomenon, I decided to take a tour myself. So, I booked tickets for a [wine and weed tour hosted by Cannabis Tours](https://cannabistours.com/california/marijuana-tours/#wine-and-weed-bay-area). The $99 ticket for a four-hour experience included tastings at two wineries, a dispensary visit, lunch, and a fair bit of snacks and drinks. Cannabis wasn’t included (and due to state laws, can’t be provided as part of the ticket price on any of these tours), but there were opportunities to purchase and enjoy cannabis during the trip. \n\nThe tour began with a welcome reception at the [Cannabis Creative in Oakland](http://oaklandcannabiscreative.com/), and from the very first moment, cannabis was in the air. Tour-goers mingled and enjoyed cannabis they’d brought from home. We were offered glasses of cannabidiol (CBD)-infused wine while we waited for our tour bus to arrive. \n\nSoon, we filed into the luxurious party bus and took our seats. The atmosphere on the bus was infused with a sense of excitement as we started on our tour. Cannabis-themed party tunes played through the sound speakers. And almost as soon as we pulled out onto the road, joints, pipes and bongs were passed around the bus. Since the driver was in a separate compartment up front and sealed off from the smoke, we were able to use the bus as a cannabis consumption zone throughout the trip. \n\nThe tour-goers themselves were diverse in terms of age, race and gender, but most seemed to be experienced with cannabis. Almost everyone was already set up with their own array of cannabis options to enjoy or share. Most seemed to be delighted with the chance to consume cannabis in a fun setting with others.\n\nStill, one individual seemed to be having a hard time with the level of smoke that was accumulating in the bus, coughing and frequently asking if more air could be circulated. While the environment was quite comfortable for someone like myself who’s an experienced cannabis patient, the bus portion of this tour might be too overwhelming for those sensitive to smoke, or new to cannabis. \n\nOur first stop on the tour was at [Magnolia Wellness, a cannabis dispensary and lounge in Oakland](http://www.magnoliawellness.org/). This was where we had the chance to purchase cannabis, listen to a brief educational talk about the plant and vaporize cannabis extracts in the lounge. \n\nThen it was off to our first winery, [Trek Winery in Novato](http://trekwine.com/). We had lunch at Trek as well as a tasting of up to five wines, along with an optional educational tour of the winery. Guests strolled around the beautiful winery space and open seating area, eating and sampling wine at their own pace. \n\nNext, we went to [Riggers Loft](http://www.riggersloftwine.com/), a venue in Richmond that hosts four wineries along with a cider maker. At Riggers Loft, we were brought to a special section with reserved tables and had a guided tasting. As we were served one wine from each of the Riggers Loft wineries (and a cider from their cider maker), winemakers described their products and shared their creative process. \n\nWe then returned to the Cannabis Creative and concluded the tour. \n\nOverall, this tour was a fantastic way to spend an afternoon, especially for someone who enjoys cannabis and values the ability to consume during travel times. On the other hand, I wouldn’t recommend this for folks new to cannabis, as they’d likely find the smoky bus overwhelming. \n\n### 2. The Sonoma County Experience: Perfect Educational Tour for the Cannabis Novice\n\nIf cruising along in a smoky bus doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, but you’re still interested in taking a cannabis and wine tour, don’t worry; we have the perfect tour for you. The Sonoma County Experience offers a [tour that’s full of cannabis education, but doesn’t include any cannabis consumption](https://www.thesonomacountyexperience.com/wine-cannabis). \n\nAt $268 per person, this tour is pricier than the one put on by Cannabis Tours, but it lasts a bit longer and takes you further out into the countryside. \n\nThe experience starts in San Francisco where passengers are picked up by bus and driven into Sonoma County, a region known for both its wine and cannabis. The tour currently includes lunch, drinks and snacks along with tastings and wine education at three wineries. There’s also a dispensary stop where folks can learn all about cannabis and even purchase some marijuana products. \n\nJared Giammona, the founder of the Sonoma County Experience, says that they plan to transition soon to a model that exchanges one of the winery visits for a trip to an active cannabis farm. While Prop 64 unleashed major changes for all kinds of canna-businesses, the growing industry is quickly expanding into traditional sectors of the economy. And that’s creating a host of new opportunities for job seekers interested in breaking into the marijuana industry. \n\nThe chief economist at online employment marketplace ZipRecruiter reports the cannabis industry is adding jobs at a rate that outpaces both tech and health care. It’s OK if you have your sights set on becoming a part of the cannabis industry, but don’t have any formal experience working with marijuana. Most folks new to the cannabis sector will need to start in an entry-level position and work their way up.\n\n\"Employers [in the cannabis industry] seek skills and attributes that would be familiar to many,” says Michael Kraft, a senior project manager at Sequoia Personnel Services, a traditional staffing agency located in the heart of the Emerald Triangle. So, if you’re a cannabis enthusiast who turns green with envy when hearing about friends working in the marijuana business, here are a few helpful tips on finding a cannabis job.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Where to Find Jobs in the Marijuana Industry\n#### Cannabis-Focused Staffing Agencies\n\n[Vangsters](https://vangsters.com) is the cannabis industry’s best-known resource for job seekers. An HR company and staffing agency, Vangsters thinks like a social media platform. By signing up and creating a profile, users can confidentially scroll through hundreds of jobs postings, build a digital portfolio and share photos. \n\nBased in Denver, CO, Vangsters has quickly expanded its reach across the United States. New jobs are posted on Vangsters every day in:\n\n* Cultivation\n* Marketing\n* Sales\n* Consulting\n* Delivery\n* Management\n* Accounting \n\nWhile experienced cultivators and managers can advance their career by networking on Vangsters, marijuana industry newbies can use Vangsters as a point of entry. Start by building an active portfolio that details your experience outside the cannabis industry. \n\nFull-service cannabis staffing company [Dark Staffing Solutions](https://www.darkstaffingsolutions.com) helps job seekers prepare their résumé and apply for a variety of positions. Located in the heart of the Emerald Triangle, Dark Staffing Solutions posts many opportunities related to cultivation including: \n* Farmhands\n* Garden and farm managers\n* Finishers\n* Manufacturing assistants\n* Production workers \n\nWith 11 years of experience in management, staffing consulting and human resources in Humboldt County, owner Jaymi Dark knows that many local job seekers already have experience in the cannabis industry. It’s up to Dark Staffing Solutions to help applicants translate this experience—never before written on paper—into the legal marijuana industry. \n\nFor example, did you spend last summer hauling soil on a farm or trimming cannabis to pay the bills? Or perhaps you know how to transplant and irrigate plants. Skills like these can certainly catch the eye of cannabis industry employers. You’ll just need to know how to show this information in the best way possible. \nAnd working with recruiters at a cannabis staffing agency is the best way to do this. They understand the appropriate terminology to write on a cannabis industry résumé. They’ll also know the best way to present details about your hard-earned experience so that you’ll appear polished and professional to prospective employers.\n\nFor example, rather than saying you “trimmed on a farm” on your résumé, write that you helped to “clean, manicure and finish premium cannabis flowers for retail sale in a collaborative setting while meeting team goals.” Detail how many hours you put in each day and how satisfied your employer was with the quality of your work.\n\nFinally, don’t be shy about sharing _why_ you’re passionate about working in cannabis—many of the industry leaders feel the same way. Even if you’ve never worked in the cannabis industry, employers will be more willing to give you a chance if you have some kind of personal connection to the plant. Just make sure to use professional language, and your authenticity and passion will be appreciated. \n\n#### The Marijuana Industry’s Online Job Boards\n\nIn addition to the job boards found at Vangsters and Dark Staffing Solutions, a number of other websites have job boards specifically geared to help match good candidates with growing cannabis companies. Check out sites like:\n\n* [Canna Recruiter](https://www.cannarecruiter.com) \n* [Ganjapreneur](https://www.ganjapreneur.com/marijuana-job-boards/) \n* [Cannajobs](http://cannajobs.420pros.com)\n* [420 Careers](http://420careers.com/)\n* [Weed Hire]( http://www.weedhire.com/)\n\n#### Traditional HR & Staffing Websites \n\nSince recreational cannabis became legal in many states, mainstream markets are rapidly merging with the cannabis industry. This is generating a number of jobs in ancillary services related to cultivation, production, and sales and marketing. No longer sidelined by stigma, cannabis industry job seekers can now use mainstream job boards like:\n\n* [Craigslist](www.craigslist.com)\n* [ZipRecruiter](https://www.ziprecruiter.com)\n* [Indeed](https://www.indeed.com)\n\nFor example, in May 2018, a cursory [search of cannabis jobs in the San Francisco/Bay Area on Craigslist](https://sfbay.craigslist.org/search/jjj?query=cannabis) returned over 100 results. Positions to be filled include:\n\n* Delivery drivers\n* Security guards\n* Budtenders\n* Customer service specialists \n\nAccording to ZipRecruiter data, the total number of cannabis industry job posts increased by 445% in 2017, compared to an increase of just 18% one year prior. \n\n### Entry-Level Positions in the Cannabis Industry to Consider\n\nNow that you understand how to leverage previous experience in the workforce, what type of entry-level cannabis jobs are available? \n\n#### Cannabis Manicurist\n\nWhile machines have long threatened trimming jobs, manpower is holding its own in the cannabis industry. Even when farms and grow operations use machines to trim their crop, it’s still necessary to give buds a final manicure by hand.\n\nTraditionally, trimmers have always been compensated per pound, meaning that more skilled workers earn a larger payout. In a sense, trimming was a job comparable to self-employment or working for commission—what you put in, you get out.\n\nIn today’s legal marijuana sector, cultivators are required to uphold worker’s rights like any other industry, meaning regular breaks, clean bathrooms and eight-hour work days. These changes have downgraded the pay scale for trimmers, now typically known as manicurists or finishers. Most entry-level positions start at $12 an hour with the opportunity to advance.\n\nIf you’ve ever trimmed marijuana, list this experience on your résumé, emphasizing your ability to equally prioritize quality and quantity. Cultivators want to see premium buds in peak condition for the retail market, but they also want to maximize the highest yield possible from their workers. \n\n#### Marijuana Lab Tech \n\nIn California’s legal cannabis industry, a dizzying number of regulations govern the safety of products available to the public. Cultivators must ensure their plants are free from pesticides, mold and bacteria by relying on third-party laboratories to test their products.\n\nLabs serving the cannabis industry are seeking technicians with biology or chemistry degrees, but don’t require prior cannabis experience. If you have a science background, working for a lab is a great opportunity to gain a foothold in the industry. \n\nRELATED: [RECREATIONAL CANNABIS BRINGS SUCCESSES & CHALLENGES TO CA](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a80e74af24d1300077ccb40/recreational-cannabis-brings-success-and-challenges-to-ca)\n\n#### Cannabis Packaging & Production Workers\n\nAs the industry rapidly grows, successful companies can’t move fast enough to meet demand. In Arcata, CA, Wendy Baker has been making candies infused with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), known as Space Gems, since 2013. With a firm reputation for reliable dosing and high-quality products, her business is hustling to meet demand from dispensaries throughout California.\n\nTo fill orders, Wendy recently hired several entry-level workers to seal, package and label the candies. Many other edible and value-added cannabis companies are also seeking entry-level workers for routine production positions like these. \n\n#### Budtender/Cannabis Consultant\n\nJust as the name implies, budtenders, or cannabis consultants, are expected to help dispensary customers select and purchase the best product for their needs. While a high level of knowledge about cannabis strains and markers of quality is expected, many dispensaries are willing to train outgoing and friendly candidates as budtenders. \n\nSimilar to other industries, the most important quality for customer service positions is a natural ability to spend hours a day helping customers with a smile. If you’re passionate about cannabis, a dispensary is a great place to learn more about the plant and work your way up.\n\nIf you’re new to this position, don’t expect to land a job with the city’s most popular dispensary. But wherever you apply, emphasize your willingness to learn while packaging orders, checking in guests or enthusiastically addressing routine tasks like cleaning bathrooms and taking out the trash. \n\n#### Marijuana Delivery or Distribution Driver \n\nAs many heritage cannabis farms are located in the far reaches of Northern California, transportation to urban dispensaries is a major hurdle for successful cultivators. Additionally, with the implementation of the state’s track and trace program, transportation is now a heavily regulated aspect of the legal marijuana industry.\n\nPositions—including entry-level jobs—in delivery and distribution are on the rise. If applying for a driver position, list applicable experience and emphasize your attention to detail and history of dependability. California is a huge state and growing cannabis companies will be onboarding drivers and delivery assistants to manage the essential details of distributing heavily regulated products from point A to B safely and securely. \n\nAnd as cannabis delivery services gain in popularity—and are the only option for those locations that don’t plan on allowing dispensaries—marijuana delivery drivers will be in high demand. Delivery drivers will need to have the skills listed above, plus some of the sought-after qualities of customer service positions. Because delivery drivers have contact with customers, they’ll have to be courteous, competent and professional. \n\n### Don’t Forget to Network With Cannabis Professionals\n\nWhile hundreds of postings for cannabis industry jobs can be found online, nothing can compare to real-life connections. If you’re committed to finding your dream job in the cannabis industry, get out there and start meeting other cannabis professionals. Industry mixers and events are often hosted by cannabis magazines, marijuana businesses and even some industry associations. In communities with a large cannabis workforce, trade workshops for farmers and cannabis companies are frequently hosted by staffing agencies, accounting firms and legal services.\n\nEven if you’re not yet employed, the power of a meet-and-greet can’t be underestimated. You’re likely to learn something new and meet some friendly folks who might prove invaluable in your job search. I had my daughter at 41. She’s now 11, and our adopted son is 14. Navigating motherhood is intense at any age, but I find being a menopausal woman and a mom of a teen and preteen has its own set of challenges. My hormones are wacky, my moods can be all over the place, and stress really wears me down. \n\nWhen I was consuming cannabis medicinally for insomnia and chronic pain relief, I found it made me mellow—even days after a small nighttime dose. The fact that I was a more relaxed and less stressed overall made me feel like I could be a better mother. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nI contacted several other moms to get their take on cannabis and motherhood. The answers varied, but showed the importance of finding healthy ways to be well-rested, present and creative—all hallmarks of a great parent. \n\n### Some Moms Give Their Take on Marijuana & Motherhood\n\nJessie Gill, a cannabis nurse and blogger at Marijuana Mommy feels cannabis is a positive in her role as a mom. “My pain levels and anxiety are far better managed with cannabis. Cannabis also greatly enhances my patience, creativity and spirit of adventure, which significantly benefits my kids,” she says.\n\nLeah Maurer, co-owner and editorial lead for The Weed Blog takes a slightly different view. “I don't think any substance can make you a better mom. I think that drive, love and dedication need to come from within,” she says. “That being said, mothers who are suffering from chronic pain, migraines, nervous system conditions and a variety of other mental-health or medical issues can definitely be better moms if they are able to use cannabis as medicine, rather than opioids or other medicines with more severe or harsh side effects.”\n\nJenn Lauder, co-founder and content director of Splimm: The Pot and Parenting newsletter, agrees with Leah’s stance that cannabis doesn’t necessarily make you a better mom, but adds, “I do believe it's the most versatile and effective tool I have at my disposal, as a mother and as a human.”\n\nJenn says she includes cannabis as part of her everyday wellness routine, turning to it to deal with PMS, migraines and stress management. She also consumes marijuana for creativity and focus, as well as to enhance her meditation and yoga practices. \n\n“Cannabis helps me prioritize my wellness in ways that don't detract from my ability to parent,” Jenn says. “And it's a safe and relatively benign way to relax, unwind or recreate. I also find that I'm more easygoing, more patient, more present with my daughter, and more able to interrupt my often-frenetic multitasking in order to follow her lead or be there in the way that she needs,” she says.\n\nWriter Aimee Altman doesn’t hesitate when she says, “Yes, cannabis definitely makes me a better mom.” Before marijuana, Aimee recalls being prescribed medications—for her anxiety and insomnia—that caused her to become “apathetic or completely shut … down.” She knew she needed to be able to wake up in the middle of the night if her boys needed her.\n\nToday, Aimee says cannabis helps her connect with her kids, inspiring her to get down on the floor with them to play games, go for bike rides, bake cookies or make art. “Cannabis also helps me maintain an opiate-free lifestyle. As a long-term survivor of opioid addiction, I welcome all the tools I can to keep me on a recovery path because remaining opioid-free definitely makes me the best mom I can be,” she says.\n\n### Cannabis Safety at Home\n\nKeeping kids safe is at the top of mom’s list. So, what are some challenges—and potential dangers—of consuming marijuana at home?\n\n“Depending on how cannabis is consumed, secondhand smoke can result in lung and heart problems,” says Dr. Shivani Amin of Green Health Docs. “I always advise my patients to consume cannabis away from children if possible to avoid any complications.”\n\nRELATED: [SECONDHAND CANNABIS SMOKE & CHILDREN]( https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/58741204c67d2c000b8f5ffc/secondhand-cannabis-smoke-and-children)\n\nDr. Amin advises trying sublingual marijuana drops or capsules. If permitted where you live, cannabis topicals and edibles are also smoke-free ways to consume the plant when kids are in the home. \n\nFor Jenn, safety also means “keeping cannabis and associated products out of reach from wandering hands as well as using cannabis with intention.” \n\nJenn points out that there are many new products and secure storage options out there that make it easy to consume discreetly and to keep your cannabis away from children and pets. \n\nAimee leans toward marijuana edibles when kids are around. “[Cannabis edibles] make consumption easy and the long-lasting effects are helpful for activities such as bike rides to the park for the afternoon,” she explains. “It's all about knowing our bodies and the appropriate dose. Too much cannabis usually means a late afternoon nap for me, and my kids are past the napping stage, so that doesn't work.” \n\nLeah thinks cannabis gets a bit of an unfair rap. “There is this completely normalized idea of ‘mommy needs her coffee’ or ‘mommy needs her wine’ type of mentality—in the U.S. in particular,” Leah says. “Yet mothers who choose to consume cannabis regularly to unwind or deal with the inevitable stresses of parenting are shunned and looked down. This is because of the stigma that surrounds this plant due to decades of conjecture and propaganda that have been fed to us by our federal government.”\n\n### Marijuana Safety Tips From Cannabis-Consuming Moms \n\n* **Don’t smoke cannabis around kids** because of the dangers of secondhand smoke. Consider other forms of consumption that can provide the desired effect without producing potentially harmful byproducts.\n\n* **Treat cannabis as you would any prescription drug**, alcohol, cleaning product or other substance that can be toxic to children and pets. Keep cannabis out of reach of small hands and paws.\n\n* **Invest in a lockable storage bag** or box for extra security and peace of mind when keeping cannabis in the home.\n\n* **Consume responsibly**, knowing how your body and brain react to the plant, including your appropriate dosages. You want to be able to respond to your children’s needs at all times.\n\n### The Main Objective Is Being a Healthy, Mindful Mom\n\n“I do believe in the power of this plant,” says Dr. Amin. “It treats a host of chronic medical conditions including pain, anxiety and depression. If these conditions are being treated with cannabis, then yes, it could make women more attentive, mindful of their surroundings and, hence, great moms.”\n\nJenn emphasizes that education is key for her family. “We have honest and open conversations around cannabis, which both destigmatizes and demystifies this medicine in the minds of our kids.”\n\nWhatever your opinion may be about moms consuming cannabis, I think we can all agree that being a healthier mom can help make you a better mom. Getting enough rest, eating well, exercising and engaging in regular self-care provides you with more resources—and stamina—for the rigors of motherhood and parenting. If cannabis is part of a mom’s wellness routine, it could be one of the many valuable options in her mom toolkit to help her thrive.\n\nPhoto credit: [Bruno Nascimento](https://unsplash.com/@bruno_nascimento)\n \nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56201c206430320006bb0000/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. You’ve booked the venue, sent the invitations and finalized the menu. The only thing left to decide on is the honeymoon location. \n\nPerhaps you’re a medical marijuana patient hoping your honeymoon destination will look kindly upon your medicinal needs. Maybe you prefer to consume cannabis instead of alcohol or simply want the option to try cannabis on your vacation without worrying about any legal consequences. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nAs cannabis legalization, decriminalization and medical programs continue to spread throughout the country and world, there are more cannabis-friendly destinations to visit than ever. We’ve compiled a list of some of the most beautiful and romantic honeymoon destinations, each unique in its own way. But the one thing they all have in common is their progressive attitudes towards marijuana. \n\nNewlyweds probably don’t want their entire honeymoon to be centered on cannabis. So, each destination included has all sorts of fun activities, from spas to glacier hikes. These places will give you the freedom to enjoy cannabis as you see fit, while also providing an incredible backdrop for memorable experiences that go way beyond cannabis culture. \n\nRELATED: [TRAVELING WITH MARIJUANA](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56b29f1b0c46b4000800001b/traveling-with-medical-marijuana) \n\n### Enjoy Quality Cannabis in Sonoma County, CA\n\n![Sonoma County, CA](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-ab510ead-a504-46e2-8740-2e63e39e977f/original.png)\n_Photo credit: [Kym Ellis](https://unsplash.com/@kymellis)_\n\nA short 45 minutes from San Francisco sits one of the country’s most popular honeymoon destinations: Sonoma County. And it’s no wonder, considering the county is [home to 425 wineries](https://www.sonomacounty.com/activities/wineries-wine), a seemingly endless landscape of gorgeous vineyards, postcard-worthy cliff-lined beaches, otherworldly redwood forests and a laundry list of five-star restaurants. Book a room at one of the [world-class Sonoma County resorts](https://www.sonoma.com/businesses/?category=Lodging&tags=resorts-and-spas), and spend your honeymoon exploring all that wine country has to offer. \n\nNow that adult-use cannabis is legal in California, you don’t have to be a resident of the state to enjoy cannabis. There are recreational cannabis dispensaries throughout the county that adults over 21 can visit with a valid ID. And lucky for you, Sonoma County is near some of the most celebrated cannabis farms in the country, so many of the products you can buy at the dispensaries are locally grown and processed. \n\n### Add Marijuana to Your Outdoor Activities in Aspen, CO\n\n![Aspen, CO](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-998c99a4-80c0-4feb-9baf-4386c86c129f/original.png)\n_Photo credit: [Andrea Reiman](https://unsplash.com/@firstmohican)_\n\nAspen, CO may not be the first summer vacation destination you think of, but this dreamy mountain town really shines in the warmer seasons. There’s something for everyone here. Whether you want to spend the day relaxing in a resort spa, shopping in the town’s quaint downtown area, hiking up Buttermilk Mountain for stunning views or zooming down the Rocky Mountains on a mountain bike, Aspen has it all. \n\nJust like Sonoma County, [Aspen is home to some of the most luxurious resorts](https://www.colorado.com/co/aspen/accommodations) in the country. It’s a regular vacation spot for those with money to burn, so there’s no shortage of pampering and fine cuisine options. If you prefer something a bit more rustic, there are tons of private cabin rentals to choose from, too. \n\nCannabis is legal in Colorado for any adult 21 years or older. Dispensaries are plentiful and brimming with interesting cannabis products to try with your new spouse. \n\n### Experience Nature’s Glory With Cannabis in Glacier Bay, AK\n\n![Alaska](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-2f61db48-7658-4836-a083-8b92e7eeab59/original.png)\n_Photo credit: [Robert Baker](https://unsplash.com/@vegasphotog)_\n\nIf you’re looking to see untouched natural beauty on your honeymoon, consider Alaska. Take a boat tour out on the water to experience the truly remarkable Glacier Bay, something you would only otherwise see in books or on film. Or head into Denali Park, home to some of the country’s most striking mountain views. Of course, getting the opportunity to see the aurora borealis, an absolutely stunning natural show of magnetic energy and light, is what makes Alaska truly special.\n\nAlaska is still a very untapped place, the way most would like to keep it. There aren’t as many five-star resorts or fully equipped spas compared to other honeymoon destinations. But there are few places in the world with more raw beauty than Alaska. You can book a room in the iconic [Glacier Bay Lodge](https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60833-d145090-Reviews-Glacier_Bay_Lodge-Gustavus_Alaska.html), or if you’re looking for a major splurge (to the tune of $2,000-plus per night, per person) you can book a stay at the absolutely incredible [Sheldon Chalet](http://www.sheldonchalet.com/the-chalet/#) in Denali Park. \n\nAlaska legalized cannabis in 2014. Any adults over 21 years old can have up to one ounce of marijuana in their possession and can purchase cannabis from state-licensed dispensaries. \n\n### Meet the Cannabis-Friendly Locals in Punta Del Este, Uruguay\n\n![Punta Del Este, Uruguay](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-6195ab44-d0d6-43cd-80d8-7ea20545aa1d/original.png)\n_Photo credit: [Paz Arando](https://unsplash.com/@pazarando)_\n\nPunta del Este is the second-largest city in Uruguay and one of the most significant resort towns in all of South America. A gorgeous coastal town packed with five-star resorts and brimming with culture, Punta del Este is one of the more traditional honeymoon destinations on this list. You can lounge on Jose Ignacio Beach, book a guided horseback excursion for a romantic ride on the sand, party in La Barra—a popular town only a few miles away—and eat your way through the city’s eclectic cuisine. \n\nUruguay was the first country in the world to fully legalize cannabis. Now, it’s home to a plethora of state-sanctioned cannabis pharmacies and clubs. While these are reserved for Uruguay residents only, locals are known for being incredibly generous with their cannabis, and gifting marijuana is completely legal. Anyone over the age of 18 can smoke anywhere except in public buildings or enclosed spaces. That means you can light up at any outdoor café, beach or sidewalk. \n\n### Visit the Iconic Cannabis Coffee Shops in Amsterdam, Netherlands\n\n![Amsterdam](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-b97557f9-77e6-4260-9c36-82f08bfc8fd5/original.png)\n_Photo credit: [Sávio Félix](https://unsplash.com/@saviofelix)_\n\nNo cannabis-friendly honeymoon list would be complete without including Amsterdam. Adults can head into any of the city’s many coffee shops where they can purchase cannabis flower and pre-rolls, a caffeinated beverage and enjoy both right inside the café. At many shops, you can even rent a bowl or a bong. \n\nBeyond the cannabis culture, Amsterdam is one of the most romantic cities in the world. The city’s wide canals flow throughout, lined by streets of unique row homes, giving it a Venice-style romantic feel that’s hard to beat. Take a sunset boat tour, wander the halls of the Van Gogh museum or stroll through one of the many historic parks within the city. If you want to extend your honeymoon, you can simply jump on a train and head in any direction to continue your European adventure. \n\nAs the world opens up more and more to legal cannabis, it makes travel much easier for medical marijuana patients. After all, there are studies highlighting how cannabis can:\n\n* Positively affect mood\n* Make exercise more enjoyable\n* Ease anxiety in social situations\n\nCombine all of that with the [health benefits that come from spending time in the sun](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2290997/), and you’ve got the recipe for a truly fine day. \n\nWe compiled a list of some of the best outdoor activities and paired them with a perfect cannabis product for the occasion. Let us know how you like to enjoy a sunny day in the comments below.\n\n### Explore Local Parks With a Cannabis Lozenge\n\nNo matter where you live, odds are your city has at least one park to check out. Lace up your walking shoes and invite a friend or listen to a podcast while you stroll around town. You don’t need an agenda or a real plan. All you have to do is start walking. Exploring local parks is a free and easy way to spend a beautiful day.\n\nWhile you’re making your way around your local park, you can pop in a sativa tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) lozenge from Pure Ratios. Lozenges are a discreet, portable and smoke-free way to enjoy cannabis, perfect for parks that may have strict no smoking policies. These lozenges are fast-acting, because they bypass the digestive system—and they can even combat bad breath, too. \n\n### Hit the Trails With A Disposable Marijuana Vape Pen\n\nWhether you live in a town with nature trails readily accessible or you have to make a quick day trip, exploring nearby trail systems is a great way to get up and moving. Get online to find out what hiking, biking and even urban walking trails are near you. Pick a path according to your experience level and then get moving.\n\nIf you want a quick way to elevate your hike or bike ride but don’t want to smoke, a vape pen will give you what you need. Disposable vape pens are convenient for medicating on the go as you don’t have to mess with batteries, cartridge changes or other accessories.\n\nDomPen offers a Pineapple Coast disposable vape pen made with the famous cannabis strain Pineapple Express. This strain is known for imparting an energetic and invigorating high, perfect for a daytime excursion on the trails. \n\n\n### Check Out a Rooftop Bar With a Discreet Cannabis Tincture\n\nWhen we think about outdoor activities, people tend to think of exercises like hiking and biking. And while both of those are great, getting outside doesn’t always mean being physically active. If you’re having a lazy day, feel like splurging on some good food with friends or are too tired from your last workout to exercise again, try out a local restaurant with an epic rooftop or patio. \n\nThink about bringing along a tincture like this high-THC formula from Rosette Wellness. Made with Royal Treat, a cannabis strain high in terpenes, the tincture ensures a balanced and earthy experience, perfect for a social gathering.\n\nTinctures are an incredibly discreet way of consuming cannabis. Unlike other cannabis consumption methods, tinctures don’t require heating up because the cannabis has already been activated. Order a soda water with a splash of juice, add 1–3 drops of tincture, and you’ll have a cocktail without the inconvenience of a hangover. (Be careful about mixing a tincture with an alcoholic drink, as alcohol can heighten the effects of THC.)\n\n### Enjoy a Botanical Garden With a Tablingual\n\nYou may not think your town or city has a botanical garden, but it’s more common than you might expect. There are privately owned arboretums open to the public, botanic gardens on the campuses of universities, and some that are owned and operated by state governments. And visiting any of the above are well worth your time. Botanical gardens and arboretums are full of lush, gorgeous foliage that make for a beautiful background for a walk. \n\nSince nearly all botanical gardens are smoke-free, any cannabis you bring will have to be consumed some way other than smoking or vaping. In this case, we’d recommend Elevate tablinguals by LEVEL. These little tablets are meant to dissolve under the tongue so that the cannabinoids are absorbed through the tissues in the mouth. These little tablinguals are a discreet way to consume cannabis while you’re strolling through the gardens. And it’s easy to up your dose if more is needed. \n\n### Find an Outdoor Workout Group With a Sour Gummy\n\nIf you want to knock out two activities in one, go for an outdoor workout class. Check out [meetup.com](https://www.meetup.com/) to see if there’s a group already in place near you. If you can’t find one, you can always start your own. The setting doesn’t have to be fancy. Run through a local park, use playground equipment for creative exercises, run sprints up and down the bleachers of a local high-school football field. You’ll get a great workout and some much-needed vitamin D all at the same time. \n\nKick your workout into high gear with an upbeat sativa edible like Plus Sour Watermelon Gummies. Not only can cannabis increase airflow during exercise, THC can act as a shortcut to the elusive runner’s high everyone wants to achieve during a workout. \n\n### Explore Your Local Farmer’s Market With Marijuana-Infused Tea\n\nStrolling through a farmer’s market is one of the absolute best ways to spend a morning. And the spring season really brings out some of the best fruits and vegetables, including strawberries, corn, green beans, apricots and so much more. Bring your reusable shopping bag to carry home all of the fresh local produce, and get ready to try all of the samples. If you’re lucky, there will be some epic baked goods waiting for you, too. \n\nKikoko’s Positivi-Tea is a HelloMD staff pick for a good reason—and a great way to sip your cannabis while strolling through the farmer’s market. Each tea sachet has 10 mg of THC and 5 mg of cannabidiol (CBD), a perfect dose for someone still pretty new to cannabis or for experienced consumers looking for a smaller dose of marijuana. Brew this tea and toss it in a thermos so you can enjoy it as you meander through the market. \n\n### Have a Picnic in Your Own Backyard With a Cannabis Pre-Roll\n\nYou don’t have to go anywhere to enjoy the spring weather if you have a backyard, patio or deck. All you have to do is step right out of your door. Toss a blanket on the lawn and invite friends over for a spring picnic. Or put out a table and chairs.\n\nThe only thing that can make snacking outdoors better is a little cannabis. And the best part of staying within the comfort of your own home is that you can smoke flower freely, if that’s your preferred cannabis consumption method. Grab a pack of these Garden Society Hybrid Dogwalker Joints to enjoy before, during and after the picnic. It was only in the late 1800s that countries around the world began to ban its use and cultivation. By the mid-1900s, cannabis prohibition was the norm in most parts of the world, and only recently have public attitudes begun to shift.\n\nAs cannabis’s stigma begins to dissipate, we look back at the plant’s history and how we got to now. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### 8000 BCE: Cannabis Is Domesticated \n\nArcheological evidence suggests that cannabis was first domesticated in Central Asia. From there, humans brought the plant with them in their migrations across the globe.\n\nIn each area that humans settled, they bred the plant for their specific needs such as food, fiber and in some cases even psychoactivity. Over thousands of years, humans selectively bred cannabis plants, and each area developed plants that were specifically adapted to life in that region. Today, these indigenous plants are known as landrace strains. \n\n### 7000 BCE–476 CE: Cannabis Was an Important Crop in the Ancient World \n\nArcheologists have found evidence of the cannabis plant in southern and eastern Asia, Europe, Egypt and the Arabian Peninsula. The cannabis plant played an important economic, cultural and spiritual role in the civilizations it was cultivated in. The plant was also used medicinally by many ancient civilizations, including by the Chinese, Egyptians and Romans. \n\n### 500s–1400s: Cannabis Continues to Spread Across the Globe \n\nAfter the fall of the Western Roman Empire, cannabis continued to play an important role in ancient societies. Archeologists uncovered the grave of French queen Arnegunde, who was buried with a hemp cloth in 570. And cannabis seeds were uncovered in a Viking burial that dates back to 800. \n\nReferences to hashish abound in the Arab world and date as far back as 1000. Some of the earliest references to cannabis’s intoxicating properties were from the Arab world during this era. The famous _One Thousand and One Nights_ contains details of the cannabis’s aphrodisiac properties. The plant was even implicated as a tool that was used by assassins in Marco Polo’s account of his journeys in the late 1200s. \n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS & SEX: A BRIEF WORLD HISTORY](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a835c65f24d1300077ccb47/cannabis-and-sex-a-brief-world-history)\n\nIt’s speculated that the Arabs spread cannabis to Africa, as the plant isn’t native to the continent. The earliest evidence of the plant in Africa outside of Egypt is from Ethiopia in the 1300s, where archeologists discovered ceramic pipes that contained traces of cannabis. \n\n### 1500s–1700s: Hemp Helps Power the Age of Exploration \n\nRopes and sails made from hemp were crucial to the Age of Discovery. Hemp was so important that by 1545 the Spanish crown required much of its colonized farmers to meet hemp quotas. \n\nMeanwhile in Britain, cannabis cultivation hit its peak to meet the English military’s seafaring needs. During the Tudor era, farmers in the English countryside were required to plant a certain percentage of their land with cannabis, and the same was required of farmers in Scandinavia. \n\n### Mid 1700s: Marijuana Gets a Species Name\n\nNaturalist Carl Linnaeus described a single species of hemp, _Cannabis sativa_ in _Species Plantarum_, which was published in 1753. In 1785, another naturalist, Jean-Baptiste de Lamark, proposes that there are two species of the plant: _C. sativa_ as previously described and _Cannabis indica_, a wild species that grows in India and the surrounding regions. The debate over whether marijuana constitutes more than one species continues to this day. \n\n### 1842: Cannabis Receives Renewed Interest in the West\n\n![Cannabis extract from 1900s](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-0020135e-bbac-443c-9af5-e6c4a2a358df/original.png)\n_Cannabis medicines were a common sight in pharmacies during the 1800s into the early 1900s_\n\nIrish physician William Brooke O’Shaughnessy often traveled to India. It was here that he first studied and observed the use of _Cannabis indica_. In 1842, William returned from his travels and brought cannabis to Britain, provoking renewed interest in the plant’s medicinal properties in the West. \n\nDuring the 1800s into the early 1900s, cannabis was a popular sight in pharmacies across the West, including in the United States, where it was used as a remedy for everything from pain to insomnia. \n\n### 1844–1849: The Club of Hashish-Eaters Enjoys Cannabis’s Creative Properties \n\nIn the beginning of the 1800s, cannabis in the concentrated form of hashish and drugs like opium were recreationally popular in Europe’s scientific and literary circles. The Club des Hashischins, or Club of Hashish-Eaters, was one such group that participated in this type of recreation. The club was dedicated to exploring drug-induced experiences, and hashish was often their substance of choice. Some of the group’s most well-known members included Alexander Dumas, Victor Hugo and Charles Baudelaire. \n\n### 1890: Cannabis Bans Begin in Some Arab Countries\n\nSome countries in the Islamic world began to ban cannabis in the late 1800s. Egypt banned the plant’s importation in 1879; Morocco heavily regulated cannabis cultivation and trade; and Greece banned hashish in 1890. These laws had varying degrees of success. \n\n### 1893–1894: Indian Hemp Drugs Commission Finds That Cannabis Is Harmless \n\nThe Indian Hemp Drugs Commission was formed to investigate what was known at the time as “the ganja menace.” After a year of research and interviews with Indians from all walks of life, the commission found that banning cannabis would be “totally unjustifiable.” Doing so, they stated, would make England very unpopular due to the plant’s integral part in social and religious life in the country. Moreover, they felt that a ban would cause people to turn to more harmful drugs—a sentiment that bears modern applications.\n\n### 1913: Cannabis Prohibition in the U.S. Begins\n\nCalifornia, Maine, Wyoming and Indiana banned marijuana. Other states followed suit; by 1933, 29 states had criminalized the plant. \n\n### 1925: International Opium Convention in Geneva Attempts to Regulate Cannabis \n\nThe goal of the International Opium Convention in 1912 was to regulate the opium industry. However, by 1925, cannabis was also included on the agenda. An agreement was made between 13 nations, including the United States, to ban exports of “Indian hemp” in countries that had prohibited its use. Although restricted, there was still much leeway for countries to grow cannabis, trade internally and use the plant for recreational reasons. The law was established in 1925, but didn’t go into effect until 1938. \n\n### 1936: Reefer Madness Film Is Released in the U.S.\n\nThe 1930s marked the start of the reefer-madness era in the United States. The term comes from a movie of the same name, an anti-cannabis piece of propaganda that was released in 1936.\n\n### 1937: U.S. Marijuana Tax Act Places Cannabis Under Government Control \n\nPassed by the United States Congress, the act placed production of all cannabis under government control. All hemp farmers were required to register and obtain a license from the federal government. Other restrictions were passed regarding the production, sale and possession of cannabis—all in an attempt to curb the plant’s use. Several other nations also established prohibition laws regarding cannabis during this time. \n\n### 1960s–70s: The Hippie Trail Spreads Cannabis Seeds & Culture\n\n![Hippie Trail](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-4ce3696d-24e8-4fb8-8d22-4e283c9c7bc8/original.png)\n_Freak Street in Kathmandu, Nepal was the epicenter of the Hippie Trail in the 1960s-70s_\n\nLured by promises of adventure and exotic lands where the hashish was strong, cheap and plentiful, youth of the Western counterculture movement set off on the Hippie Trail—an overland route that began in Europe and wound its way through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India before ending in Nepal. It’s said that along the way, these travelers picked up cannabis seeds and brought them back to the United States, where they would become some of the parents of today’s modern-day cannabis strains. \n\n### 1964: Raphael Mechoulam Isolates Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) \n\nIsraeli chemist Raphael Mechoulam was the first to isolate THC from cannabis and fully elucidate the molecule’s three-dimensional structure. He did the same with cannabidiol (CBD), one year prior. Because of his work, he’s often thought of as the father of modern-day cannabis science. \n\n### 1970: The Controlled Substances Act Classifies Cannabis as a Schedule I Drug\n\nThe Controlled Substances Act listed marijuana as a Schedule I drug: a substance with high abuse potential, no medical use and severe safety concerns. This categorization of cannabis has had far-reaching effects, hampering scientific research and people’s access to the plant—effects that are still felt today. \n\n### 1970: National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) Is Established\n\nInitially funded by a $5,000 grant from the Playboy Foundation, [NORML has been fighting for the rights of cannabis consumers since the 1970s](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a18a0c7eea891000897e26f/norml-fighting-for-the-rights-of-cannabis-consumers). The organization continues to play an important role in the marijuana decriminalization movement in the United States and also operates internationally. \n\n### 1973: Oregon Decriminalizes Cannabis\n\nOregon became the first state to decriminalize cannabis by reducing the penalty for possession of up to one ounce to a $100 fine. Alaska, Maine, Colorado, California and Ohio followed suit two years later. \n\n### 1976: The Netherlands Decriminalizes Cannabis\n\n![Bulldog coffeeshop](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-c1143d70-32ed-4e42-b0e8-291ffd04ff3f/original.png)\n_The Bulldog was the first coffeeshop in Amsterdam_\n\nThe Netherlands first criminalized cannabis in 1953, but decided to decriminalize it in 1976, removing penalties for possession of small amounts of the plant. Since then, cannabis use and sales have been allowed in designated coffeeshops, fostering Amsterdam’s vibrant, modern cannabis scene.\n\n### 1985: _The Emperor Wears No Clothes_ Is Published \n\nMarijuana legalization activist Jack Herer publishes _The Emperor Wears No Clothes_, a book that intended to educate the public on the cannabis plant’s history and myriad uses. Now in its 12th edition, the book is widely available online—just like Herer would have wanted. \n\n### 1988: Scientists Discover the Endocannabinoid System \n\nScientists Allyn Howlett and William Devane located the CB1 receptor in the rat brain, hinting at the existence of the endocannabinoid system. In the early 1990s, other key components of this system were identified. \n\n### 1992: San Francisco Cannabis Buyers Club Is Born\n\nThe San Francisco Cannabis Buyers Club, founded by the late, great cannabis activists Dennis Peron and Mary Jane Rathburn, was the nation’s first public marijuana dispensary. The idea for the club came to Dennis in jail after he was arrested for possessing four ounces of marijuana. The cannabis actually belonged to his partner Jonathan West, who was using it to ease his AIDS symptoms. \n\nDennis and Mary Jane boldly opened and operated the dispensary in defiance of state and federal law. They would both go on to help with the passing of Proposition 215. \n\n### 1996: California Becomes the First State to Legalize Medical Marijuana \n\nCalifornia became the first state to legalize medical marijuana with the passage of Proposition 215, also known as the Compassionate Use Act of 1996. Oregon, Alaska and Washington did the same two years later. \n\n### 2001: Canada Legalizes Medical Marijuana\n\nCanada became the first country to legalize medical marijuana for terminally ill patients and those with chronic illnesses. Other countries like Australia, Israel and Chile have followed suit. \n\n### 1998: Breeding of High CBD Cannabis Strains Begins \n \nGeoffrey Guy of GW Pharmaceuticals teams up with Dutch Seed Company HortaFarm to begin the process of breeding cannabis strains that are high in cannabidiol (CBD). It would be roughly 10 years before these strains would make it to the United States. \n\n### 2008: First Cannabis Testing Lab in the U.S. Opens \n\nSteep Hill Halent Labs became the first consumer cannabis testing lab in the United States when it opened in Berkeley, CA. The lab was opened in conjunction with Steve DeAngelo of Harborside Health Center after the entrepreneur had difficulty getting non-cannabis labs to test his products. Steep Hill eventually went on to test some of the first high CBD strains for potency.\n\n### 2012: Adult-Use Cannabis Becomes a Reality in the U.S. \n\nWashington and Colorado became the first two states in the United States to legalize recreational marijuana through voter initiatives. Alaska and Oregon did the same in 2014. \n\n### 2013: CNN Airs “Weed” \n\n![Sanjay Gupta & Charlotte Figi](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-fd1b8620-2701-4035-bd37-8ea6a3ca2cae/original.png)\n_Sanjay Gupta with Charlotte Figi in his documentary “Weed”_\n\nSanjay Gupta’s three-part documentary series “Weed” popularized medical marijuana for many Americans. The first documentary featured Charlotte Figi, a six-year-old with a severe form of epilepsy who found relief after taking CBD. After the airing of the documentary, interest in CBD products skyrocketed—a trend that still continues today. \n\n### 2013: Uruguay Becomes the First Country to Legalize Cannabis\n\nUruguay was the first country in the modern era to legalize recreational cannabis. However, retail sales didn’t begin until 2017. Canada is currently on track to legalize adult-use cannabis in 2018. \n\n### 2016: A Record Number of Americans Supports Cannabis\n\n![Tom Wolf signs medical marijuana legalization bill](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-aa020251-3b09-40fc-a3ca-f4f14eac56dd/original.png)\n_Pennsylvania’s Governor Tom Wolf signs legislation legalizing medical marijuana_\n\nIn October 2016, 60% of Americans believed that “the use of marijuana should be legal,” according to a Gallup poll. In 2017, that number jumped to 64%—the highest percentage recorded since the group began polling the question in 1969. \n \n### 2017: World Health Organizations Supports CBD Use \n\nA World Health Organization (WHO) [report found that CBD isn’t associated with abuse potential and on the contrary, has several medical applications](http://www.who.int/medicines/access/controlled-substances/5.2_CBD.pdf_).
