But 2020 has been such an odd year, and it got us talking around the office, the Zoom office, that is. We asked ourselves what kind of gifts would be best for our friends and family? \n\nWe collectively thought it should be something with significance, especially since we may be celebrating at a distance. Our answer is to give experience-based gifts, something that will bring a smile to our loved one's faces and perhaps a lasting positive impact.\n\nWe published [4 Experience-Based Holiday Gift Ideas for An Unusual Holiday Season](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/4-experience-based-holiday-gifts-for-an-unusual-holiday-season), and we follow with some additional ideas to get your holiday gift-giving juices flowing.\n \nHere are 4 more \"Experiential\" celebratory gifts to bring 2020 to a resounding close:\n\n![Hello4-min (22).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello4_min_22_6ff20480bb.png)\n\n### 1. Give the Gift of a [Yoga Practice](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-and-yoga-a-match-made-in-heaven)\n\nSince the start of the pandemic, in-person yoga classes have been a thing of the past. If you miss the community vibe of getting your downward dog on, you can get the next best thing. Online yoga classes with a teacher who gets to know you. \n\nIt may not be the same as going to the yoga studio, but some yoga teachers, like [Nat Kendall](https://www.natkendall.com/), have the ability to create connections, busting down the Zoom barrier and create community.\n\nNat is a recording artist (he gets a good chant on in every class) and a devoted student of yoga. Give the Gift of Microdosing: One-on-One Personal Coaching\n\n[Microdosing](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/microdosing) is all the rage for both cannabis and [psychedelics](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/psychedelics). It's the practice of consuming small amounts of a substance in a \"[sub-therapeutic, or sub-threshold](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/microdosing-a-better-way-to-take-cannabis), amounts so low that they wouldn’t produce the whole-body effect of a full dose, but high enough that a cellular response could be observed.\"\n\nNumerous health benefits come from microdosing cannabis or psychedelics. These benefits vary based on the substance. For <u>cannabis</u>, microdosing may help with **chronic pain**, **anxiety**, and **sleep**. With <u>psychedelics</u>, people have anecdotally reported that it helps **alleviate depression** and **anxiety** and may increase the feeling of **focus** and **creativity**. But, if you're new to either, how do you get started? \n\n[We think a personal coach](https://www.bliss-theory.com/) is a good entry point and a safe way to explore unchartered territory.\n\nAt different times, Pamela Hadfield, co-founder of HelloMD, [transformed her physical and mental health](https://www.bliss-theory.com/blog/tales-of-a-suburban-mom-microdosing-cannabis-for-my-migraines-and-then-lsd-for-depression) microdosing cannabis and then psychedelics. She's a well-known educator and advocate for alternative paths of wellness and has been featured in **Rolling Stone** and **Forbes magazine**.\n\nPamela is also the Founder of [Bliss Theory](https://www.bliss-theory.com/) where she offers [one-to-one coaching for women](https://www.bliss-theory.com/whats-bliss-theory). The Bliss Theory coaching philosophy is based on transformational thinking principles and step-by-step personalized guidance on microdosing cannabis and/or psychedelics. \n\n![4.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/4_dc1721882f.png)\nChani's best-seller \"You Were Born for This\"\n\n### 3. Give the Gift of a Self Guided Astrological Reading\n\n[Chani Nicholas](https://chaninicholas.com/) is a Los Angeles-based, New York Times best-selling astrologer and author of You Were Born For This: Astrology for Radical Self-Acceptance (HarperOne, January 2020). She is AWESOME, and we love her book, which is the guide to all-things astrological.\n\nOK, here's the cool and the gift-giving part. You can go onto Chani's site and [input the birthdate details of the person](https://chart.chaninicholas.com/) you want to gift-give, and it pulls up all the relevant information for that specific chart. \n\nIn her book, \"Chani shows how your birth chart -- a snapshot of the sky at the moment you took your first breath -- reveals your unique talents, challenges, and opportunities.\" Fun! \n\n![Hello2-min (24).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello2_min_24_79fb54d716.png)\n\n### 4. But, this is not an ordinary year. The regular Black Friday specials, well, perhaps that just doesn't cut it. \n\nI don't know about you, but I look in my closet and maybe 80% of what's there - I don't wear at the moment. Ditto - for a lot of my life. This year is well, different. What you give to people in the age of COVID, matters. Why? Because, it's so unique and frankly, a lot of us are having a hard time.\n\nWe think this is a gift-giving season of self-care, for gifts that benefit our overall body, mind, and spirit. I might propose that every gift we give has a socially positive impact on the receiver. Maybe that's too ambitious, but let's give it a go!\n\n### 4 Experiential Gifts for the Holidays\n\n![The Oura Ring helps you with a better night's sleep.](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_11_18_at_11_00_01_AM_17ea827ec7.png)\n\n### 1. The Oura Ring\n\nThe [Oura Ring](https://ouraring.com/?utm_campaign=brand-us&g_acctid=553-919-5922&g_campaign=Brand%20-%20US&g_campaignid=1016078591&g_adgroupid=70823106696&g_adid=451501039328&g_keyword=oura%20ring&g_keywordid=aud-314758640118:kwd-305035554360&g_network=g&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&gclid=Cj0KCQiAk53-BRD0ARIsAJuNhpvPsHlLJnYyH1_Mr3i24T6k_ZlqdDLtcq-oqCv33VNTjEt4_paOZ5YaAurAEALw_wcB), if you haven't heard, is all the rage. From Prince Harry to Jack Dorsey to my favorite gal pal down the street, it seems I've heard a lot about how tracking sleep is the route to wellness and whole-being.\n\nWhat is the Oura Ring? They say on their site, \"The Oura Ring tracks key signals from your body, delivering critical insights to help you build good habits and harness your body's potential every day.\" \n\nBasically, it tracks your sleep. And sleep is important!\n\nAccording to [Fast Company](https://www.fastcompany.com/90408868/jack-dorsey-biz-stone-and-marc-benioff-use-oura-rings), \"The Oura ring is lined with sensors that measure heart rate and body temperature. Every morning, the Oura app gives you a \"readiness score,\" informed by your resting heart rate, physical activity, and quality of sleep the night before.\"\n\nThe Oura ring weighs in at $299, but the Oura ring implies it is the \"secret weapon for personal improvement.\" \n\n![Luxury cannabis edibles by Herve](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_11_18_at_11_15_25_AM_8502c233aa.png)\n\n### 2. Genetic Testing\n\nWhen you land on the [23 & Me site](https://www.23andme.com/?dch=br), the tagline says \"Give your family a more complete picture of their health with DNA insights.\" It's about knowing your personal story in the way they deliver it, based on your DNA, which is kind of cool. But, beware, no matter what your results say \"F.D.A.-approved\" does not necessarily mean \"clinically useful.\" However, it seems to be the go-to genetic test for wellness.\n\nWith their [Ancestory & Traits Service](https://www.23andme.com/dna-ancestry/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=search_generic&utm_campaign=US_evergreen_sales_prs_beta&gclid=Cj0KCQiAk53-BRD0ARIsAJuNhpuQ4nUQ9lfVm78qmnh_5ZCU1LXiDPZ9rTqzEDZyKuGSCuF36MFVWNIaAgUzEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds), you will receive a comprehensive ancestry breakdown. Apparently, this will allow you to find your genetic ancestry and narrow it down from some 2,000 regions. \n\nAre you looking for family origins? If that's your end game, AncestryDNA may be the right solution for you. The health report generates the Ethnicity Estimate report, which shows what regions in the world your ancestors were most likely linked to.\n\n![Peloton became the hot trend in exercise during COVID.](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_11_18_at_11_45_32_AM_b9a62c1d94.png)\n\n### 4. Peloton Bike\n\nPre-Covid, I was a cardio addict and went to class after class, in addition to hiking and yoga. Post-Covid I've tried to keep up my fitness level, but it's been difficult. I've been working full time and homeschooling 3 kids and dealing with the ups and downs of uncertainty and stress. I knew I needed a new solution to get my ultra-self on and keep my muffin top at bay. \n\nSince day 1 of COVID, my best gal pals screamed at me to get a Peloton stationary bike. We did Soul Cycle together weekly and yes, Soul Cycle, has its own version of at-home cycling now. But ultimately, [Peloton](https://www.onepeloton.com/bike) is the answer to my exercise blues and has gotten me back in shape during the rolling lockdowns. Some people do it by climbing a mountain or scuba diving. The most profound and challenging ordeal is to drink Ayahuasca. It is in a way the ultimate adventure.\" - Graham Hancock, British writer, and journalist\n\n### Silicon Valley Execs to Veterans with PTSD\n\nJim recently became the Founder of a psychedelics company within the nascent industry. When asked why he left the traditional tech world for psychedelics, he says, \n\n\"I started taking Ayahuasca in ceremonial settings a few years ago. The profound shift in my mental health and perspective made me wonder what I was doing with my life and career. At that point, I decided to dedicate myself to finding a way to allow everyone to have this mind-expanding experience, but in a legal framework, with effective drugs available in a prescription format. My belief is that we can effect big changes in mental health with smaller doses of these drugs. Today, I still consume Ayahuasca a couple of times a year, to \"reset\" my normal way of thinking.\"\n\nOver the past decade, people from all walks of life have begun the conversation about Ayahuasca. From corporate executives taking long boat rides into the Peruvian jungle for a vision quest to veterans seeking relief from PTSD, people are consuming Ayahuasca for a variety of reasons. Whether you seek to meet the [\"ultimate reality\"](https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/news/newsroom/news-releases/experiences-of-ultimate-reality-or-god-confer-lasting-benefits-to-mental-health) or beat back anxiety and depression, Ayahuasca may deserve a closer look. \n\n### What Is Ayahuasca?\n\nKnown as the \"vine of the soul,\" Ayahuasca has been used for therapeutic and spiritual purposes reportedly for centuries in South America before migrating more recently to North America. A tea or a thick sludgy brew, it is made from the leaves of the Psychotria Viridis shrub (or Diploptrerys Cabrerana) and the stalks of the Banisteriopsis Caapi vine. The consumption of Ayahuasca in folklore is that of an ancient tradition with the indigenous people of Peru, Guyana, Bolivia, Brazil, Columbia, and Ecuador, although there is no historical evidence to prove this.\n\nAyahuasca is most often consumed in a ceremonial setting where a shaman, curandero, or \"guide\" leads a group. The guide, often creates the Ayahuasca brew itself, which may vary in consistency, potency and plant matter. The bitter \"tea\" is a highly concentrated extract of the medicinal compounds which may be made over the course of several days and is, as a final step, strained to remove any impurities. Interestingly, similar to cannabis, there are different classifications of B. Caapi, with upwards of 20 different strains. According to the psychedelics site [Third Wave](https://thethirdwave.co/indigenous-ayahuasca/), the strains are identified by the \"type of soil they come from, the time of harvest, their spiritual value, and the types of visions they can incur, or healing they can facilitate.\"\n\nAyahuasca's main psychoactive component is DMT, or N, N-dimethyltryptamine, a naturally occurring chemical that many believe is produced in small amounts within the human brain. In larger amounts however it is a potent hallucinogenic that dramatically alters perception and consciousness when consumed.\n\nProgressive institutions worldwide are studying Ayahuasca to discover how it may help people struggling with mental health disorders. Ayahuasca is known to [activate repressed memories](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4773875/) which helps some people move past traumatic events. This may be why research centers including the [Beckley Foundation](https://www.beckleyfoundation.org/ayahuascadmt/), [MAPS](https://maps.org/research/ayahuasca) and the [Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research](https://hopkinspsychedelic.org/) at Johns Hopkins, are studying the effects of Ayahuasca on brain function as well as intractable depression, anxiety, PTSD, and addiction.\n\n### What Are Ayahuasca's Effects?\n\nThe main ingredients of Ayahuasca brew, Banisteriopsis Caapi and Psychotria Viridis, both have psychedelic properties. Ayahuasca as a liquid, is metabolized by the liver and absorbed through the stomach lining. Your stomach naturally contains enzymes that quickly breakdown DMT within your liver and gastrointestinal tract. \n\nFor this reason, Ayahuasca must contain monoamine oxidase inhibitors, or MAOIs, which stop the breakdown of DMT gastrointestinal tract and stomach. The MAOIs within the vine Banisteriopsis Caapialso also happen to bring about the 'purge' (or vomiting) often associated with drinking Ayahuasca. \n\nAyahuasca is a thick and bitter brew to drink and between 30 to 60 minutes after drinking may cause some of the following physical symptoms:\n- Bodily temperature fluctuation\n- Rapid heartbeat\n- Shivering and tingling\n- Intense nausea that may come and go\n- A feeling of irritability and discomfort\n- Higher diastolic blood pressure\n- Crying\n- Diarrhea\n- Vomiting\n\nAlthough the physical manifestations may seem unpleasant, they most likely will subside. As you descend into your trip, fractal hallucinations are very common, as are full-blown visions and lucid dreaming. Some people report seeing spirits, other worlds and reflect on the sense of being part of something bigger than the self. For many, drinking ayahuasca can create complete ego dissolution for the duration of the trip - anywhere from 4 to 6 hours.\n\nInitial observational studies indicate that people who consume the Amazonian brew may experience lasting positive impacts on their psychological health, from building more meaning and purpose to having a deeper connection with a \"higher power.\" However, the illicit status of Ayahuasca, also known as DMT, proves challenging for scientific study.\n\nWhen taken in controlled doses, it has been shown that [DMT significantly alters electrical brain activity](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/11/191119075305.htm), creating changes that are different than the effects associated with other psychedelics, including LSD and psilocybin. [A study published in 2019](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-019-51974-4) was the first to show how DMT impacts waking brain waves, causing subjects to experience an immersive \"waking-dream\". Those who take DMT, and more specifically, Ayahuasca, often report intense hallucinations and emotional experiences, leading to significant breakthroughs. As scientists describe this experience, \"it's like dreaming, but with your eyes open.\"\n\nAyahuasca has been shown to [modulate brain activity](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5895707/); neurotransmission, impacting key neurotransmitters; gene expression, target symptoms of PTSD, depression, etc.. It may even impact epigenetic regulation, targeting conditions in which cellular memory is dysregulated, including neurodegenerative and autoimmune conditions, and addiction. Initial studies indicate that Ayahuasca may also [support brain health](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/ayahuasca#benefits), by protecting brain cells while stimulating cell growth.\n\n### Ayahuasca and Depression\n\nA 2018 study by Psychopharmacology illustrates how [Ayahuasca alters thinking style](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6182612/), impacting areas such as judgment, reactivity, and ego dissolutiom. This suggests that consumers may experience greater acceptance of their thoughts and feelings upon taking Ayahuasca, specifically benefiting those with persistent negative, unhealthy thoughts and depression. The study states, \n\n\"Attendants in the Netherlands and Colombia were assessed before, the day after, and 4 weeks following the (Ayahuasca) ritual. Relative to baseline, ratings of depression and stress significantly decreased after the Ayahuasca ceremony and these changes persisted for 4 weeks. Likewise, convergent thinking improved the post-Ayahuasca ceremony up until the 4 weeks follow-up.\"\n\nIn the first controlled trial by [Cambridge University Press](https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/psychological-medicine/article/rapid-antidepressant-effects-of-the-psychedelic-ayahuasca-in-treatmentresistant-depression-a-randomized-placebocontrolled-trial/E67A8A4BBE4F5F14DE8552DB9A0CBC97), the significant antidepressant effects of Ayahuasca in patients. The study gathered \"new evidence supporting the safety and therapeutic value of Ayahuasca, dosed within an appropriate setting, to help treat depression.\" \n\n### Ayahuasca and PTSD\n\nAyahuasca is now being studied as a potential treatment for PTSD. It is of particular [interest among veterans](https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/a3kaye/veterans-are-turning-to-ayahuasca-for-ptsd-relief) who seek peace-of-mind, as they aim to channel feelings of anger while overcoming debilitating trauma. Ayahuasca [may help PTSD](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5895707/) sufferers due to its \"modulation of brain activity, neurotransmission, and neurogenesis, which are consistent with the reported effects of Ayahuasca on the retrieval of traumatic memories.\" \n\n### Ayahuasca and Addiction\n\nAyahuasca has been shown to exert significant anti-addictive properties based on how it influences dopamine and serotonin levels while interfering with synaptic plasticity – which contributes to learning and memory. Psychological insights also increase, helping individuals process repressed trauma while enhancing their decision-making skills.\n\nRenowned addiction expert Gabor Mate states the following on Ayahuasca and addiction,\n\n\"No matter what a person is addicted to—whether it’s eating, shopping, sex, drugs—each addicted person harbors a deep pain, which they may or may not be in touch with. The plant removes the self-created barriers to get in touch with the source of that pain, so you realize what you’ve been running from all of your life.”\n\n### Are There Any Risks Associated with Ayahuasca?\n\nFor the most part, when taken in a responsible, controlled environment, Ayahuasca is safe. As stated by York University, this substance is most dangerous when individuals have a pre-existing illness, such as a heart condition or bipolar disorder. In the few reported death cases, pre-existing conditions are believed to have played a role, or the possibility of drug interactions. Ayahuasca is not intended to be taken with recreational drugs, antidepressants (SSRIs), nicotine, or caffeine. There has never been a death during a clinical study.\n\n### Where Can I Legally Seek Treatment?\n\nAyahuasca is currently illegal to consume, sell, possess, import, or distribute in the United States. However, there are special judicially granted exceptions for select churches. There are similar exceptions being made in [other Western countries, including Canada](https://www.vice.com/en_ca/article/7xg499/the-church-ceu-de-toronto-where-its-legal-to-use-ayahuasca).\n\nPre-COVID, retreat centers in South America were increasingly popular, especially in Peru. For instance, Iquitos, Peru has more Ayahausca retreat centers than anywhere in the world. The key to finding the right retreat center for you is to really do your homework. You can see why, with the global pandemic COVID-19 hitting us like a tsunami at the beginning of March, it's been a rough go of it for most of us, so the \"F*** 2020\" seems like a glove that fits. \n\nA close friend of mine says that this past March felt like it lasted one year, followed by April and May, which seemed to last about ten years each. The ongoing stress of not knowing what might happen with the virus, isolation from shelter-in-place, potential job loss, and economic uncertainty; the fallout of COVID has taken its toll on the global community. COVID has also caused the most massive adjustment in behaviors and attitudes since the last World War. It's been an utter shit-show of epic proportion, and our lives are still being shaped by it daily.\n\nThat's the bad news; the good news is that there have been many positive takeaways from living through the pandemic. Lately, I've been considering the positive outcomes that we may experience as a result of living through the COVID-19 pandemic and here are my top five:\n\n### 1. Strengthening Relationships\n\nDid any of us expect to be locked in our house 24/7 for months at a time? Whether you live with your immediate family, roommates, or alone, we all have become extra familiar with our SIP \"pod', or the quarantine tribe we choose. As life came to a screeching halt last spring, and our daily pace slowed, relationships with other people became a focus of attention worldwide. \n\nFor the first time in years, I stayed in the house with my kids day in and out. I not only want to kill them, but I've also fallen in love with them in new ways. My close hiking buddy became my 6 foot apart lifeline, and distant family members and old friends are welcomed into my living space via video chat. Reconnecting with people and maintaining or strengthening existing relationships has made me grateful for the love I share. This time has deepened my relationships and shown me who I treasure and why.\n\n### 2. Connection through Technology\n\nZooming is now officially a verb. You know something has shifted when your elderly relatives have downloaded Zoom on their mobile phone. Video chats and meetings will never replace face to face meetups, but Zooming (or Google Chat) has allowed us to stay connected in a time of deep distress.\n\nGoogle Classroom and other remote learning tools are now a must-know and must-use part of daily lives - for kids and adults alike. My worst nightmare is homeschooling my kids, but now that's it's come to pass, we at least have necessary tools to keep our children connected to classrooms, other students, and their teachers. This distance-learning forever changes how we learn, and our ability to access education globally, and even though I hate it, that's pretty darn cool.\n\nChanges in behavior also extend to how we see our doctors. Telemedicine is now considered the first step in seeing your doctor. Honestly, who wants to go to a doctor's waiting room right now? With new, more progressive [federal regulations on telemedicine](https://www.aafp.org/journals/fpm/blogs/inpractice/entry/telehealth_rules_waived.html/), we now have models for more accessible healthcare. This includes getting a prescription from your G.P. or even getting your medical marijuana card online.\n\n### 3. Cannabis Becomes \"Essential\"\n\nFive years ago, medical marijuana advocates such as myself, were often laughed at or ridiculed in mainstream commentary. I'd often hear, \"Medical marijuana is a joke, people just say that it's medicine because they want an excuse to get high.\" It was frustrating, and it seemed like getting people to listen was like pushing a rock uphill.\n\nToday, medical marijuana is legal in 33 U.S. states (and the District of Columbia) and recreationally legal in 11 states. When the Coronavirus hit, cannabis shops shuttered their doors along with other businesses. However, that changed quickly in many states. As declared in a [N.Y. Times article,](https://www.nytimes.com/article/coronavirus-weed-marijuana.html)\n\n\"Over the past week, more than a dozen states have agreed that while \"nonessential\" stores had to close, pot shops and medical marijuana dispensaries could remain open — official recognition that for some Americans, cannabis is as necessary as milk and bread.\"\n\nAlthough there is a patchwork of regulations that change state by state, this is a triumph for people who consume cannabis as medicine. Medical marijuana treats anxiety, depression, insomnia, cancer, PTSD, and the list goes on. COVID-19 has highlighted not only the medicinal necessity of cannabis, and access to it, but also the need for federal recognition and reformation of existing laws and regulations. It appears that cannabis is here to stay and everyone seems to be getting on the train.\n\n### 4. A 70's Style Summer\n\nI was a 70's kid, and summer meant endless daydreaming, bike rides, and a lot of disorganized activity. Running out the back door in the morning and coming back at night was the norm, and loading up the station wagon for a road trip spelled v-a-c-a-t-i-o-n. COVID brought us to our knees, but it also brought back the 70's style, free-wheeling summer.\n\nTypically, my summer is organized around activities, whether that's back-to-back summer camps for the kids or a big European vacation. Neither of those can happen during COVID, and basic summertime activities seem to be a thing of the past. At the beginning of the summer, I was anxious about this unstructured approach. But as the days passed into months, I realized I had not had a summer this relaxing since about 1979. \n\nRather than driving the kids to an all-day summer camp, they wake up and go for a bike ride. Rather than hopping on a plane to take a highly structured family vacation, we've packed up the car to see family in the midwest - twice. We went swimming Tahoe and hiking in Yellowstone, we've had a blast. \n\n### 5. Freedom to Work Remotely\n\nIf you still have a job, thank your lucky stars. For most of us still working, we've been granted the freedom to work remotely. It's ironic, COVID has taken away so much personal freedom, yet changed the way we work, giving some people more freedom than ever. Working remotely means less time in the car, more time at home, and for some, increased their productivity. It has undoubtedly created a better work-life balance by giving more hours back to the day. \n\nWith no end in sight, people have the flexibility to move to different areas of the country, whether it be for a better quality of life or slightly cheaper living. Urban flight has become a real thing. Future positive benefits for families working from home is that both men and women may equally appreciate the difficulty of raising a family, homeschooling, all while working a full-time gig. Employers may be more understanding and generous in the future when it comes to paid leave or understanding childcare difficulties.\n\nThe Coronavirus has, in its worldwide wake, left a trail of distress and suffering. Unmistakably, it's been one of the more challenging experiences we've gone through together. That said, from our dark times, there's also been good news and wisdom gained from our new experiences. As former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt famously said, \"Never mistake knowledge for wisdom. One helps you make a living; the other helps you make a life.\"","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.5037593984962405,"src":"/static/1ed2071a99254848b0493bdf0a6b20b5/ee604/aa42a5f816ac44197a31f19ba988ca9a.png","srcSet":"/static/1ed2071a99254848b0493bdf0a6b20b5/69585/aa42a5f816ac44197a31f19ba988ca9a.png 200w,\n/static/1ed2071a99254848b0493bdf0a6b20b5/497c6/aa42a5f816ac44197a31f19ba988ca9a.png 400w,\n/static/1ed2071a99254848b0493bdf0a6b20b5/ee604/aa42a5f816ac44197a31f19ba988ca9a.png 800w,\n/static/1ed2071a99254848b0493bdf0a6b20b5/f3583/aa42a5f816ac44197a31f19ba988ca9a.png 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/1ed2071a99254848b0493bdf0a6b20b5/58556/aa42a5f816ac44197a31f19ba988ca9a.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/1ed2071a99254848b0493bdf0a6b20b5/61e93/aa42a5f816ac44197a31f19ba988ca9a.webp 200w,\n/static/1ed2071a99254848b0493bdf0a6b20b5/1f5c5/aa42a5f816ac44197a31f19ba988ca9a.webp 400w,\n/static/1ed2071a99254848b0493bdf0a6b20b5/58556/aa42a5f816ac44197a31f19ba988ca9a.webp 800w,\n/static/1ed2071a99254848b0493bdf0a6b20b5/99238/aa42a5f816ac44197a31f19ba988ca9a.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3091-markdown","title":"Top 7 Cannabis Images on Instagram","slug":"top-7-cannabis-images-on-instagram","content":"Every now and then, you stumble across a photo on your Instagram feed that makes you say wow. The red color is thanks to anthocyanin, the natural pigment that makes plants and vegetables red, purple or blue. All of these elements let us look at this strain through a whole new lens (no pun intended). \n\nNugshot’s feed is an ode to each individual feature of our favorite cannabis strains. Scroll through and be amazed by the many properties of the plant we fail to see with the naked eye.\n\nPhoto credits: [Elevated Exposure](https://www.instagram.com/elevatedexposurela/) (main and Elevated Exposure images), [Alex Reyes](https://www.instagram.com/greengarden_sf/) (Alex Reyes image), [Jamie Evans](https://www.instagram.com/theherbsomm/) (Jamie Evans image), [Sergio Garcia](https://www.instagram.com/_sergiogarcia_/) (Sergio Garcia image), [Lea Augereau](https://www.instagram.com/Lea_Augereau/) (Lea Augereau image), [Berol Mirado](https://www.instagram.com/berol.mirado/?hl=en) (Berol Mirado image), [Nugshots](https://www.instagram.com/nugshots/] (Nugshots image)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. But the end of the summer doesn’t mean the end of fun trips with family and friends. From fall foliage to pumpkin festivals to corn mazes, there are lots of ways to enjoy autumn destinations. \n\nYou can also pair these trips with cannabidiol (CBD). Handy in many situations, you can consume CBD in tinctures, vape pens or edibles depending on where you are and who you’re with. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nCBD is fast becoming known as a helpful tool in easing mental and physical stresses, including:\n\n* Reducing inflammation after a workout or hike\n* Relaxing your body and elevating your mood\n* Increasing your mental focus by decreasing stress and anxiety\n\nAnd since the 2018 Farm Bill passed, CBD is widespread throughout the country. This past year the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced that [you can even fly with certain CBD products](https://hellomd.com/articles/4-cbd-products-to-take-on-your-next-flight/). So, consider these four fall destinations for a CBD-friendly getaway before winter sets in.\n\nRELATED: [FARM BILL UPDATE: HOPE FOR HEMP FARMERS & CBD CONSUMERS](https://hellomd.com/articles/farm-bill-update-hope-for-hemp-farmers-and-cbd-consumers/)\n\n### 1. Experience A Slice of Old Bavaria in Leavenworth, WA\n\n![Leavenworth, WA](https://hellomd-gcs-production.imgix.net/orphan/markdown-image-injector/ownerId/image/2109fd05-469f-4be3-a167-9e6b6e4b81f2?auto=format&dpr=1.7999999523162842)\n\nGermany has its fair share of strong cultural traditions, and none is more distinct than what you can find in Bavaria. Bavaria is in the southeastern region of the country, with traditions and a cultural heritage dating back centuries—you can thank Bavaria for Oktoberfest.\n\nHave you always wanted a slice of Bavaria but can’t make the transatlantic trip? Then head right to Leavenworth, Washington. Nestled in the southeast corner of the North Cascades National Park, this hamlet is famous as a little Bavarian town. \n\nLeavenworth boasts buildings complete with [architecture and decorations inspired by Old World Bavarian architecture](http://www.cityofleavenworth.com/col-assets/uploads/2011/05/Portfolio-of-Old-World-Bavarian-Architecture-and-Signs.pdf). \n\nLeavenworth has a waterfront park, right beside Wenatchee River. But if you’re looking to continue down your pseudo-European tour, Lake Wenatchee State Park is a short drive away. Bring your favorite CBD vape pen, inhale and connect with what the city calls “Switzerland-type views.” Some CBD would be great to energize you after a hike and protect against store muscles later.\n\n### 2. Explore Maine’s Pumpkin Trail, Which Starts at Damariscotta\n\nMaine has plenty of changing colors and natural scenery to take advantage of in fall. And to ring in autumn, all things pumpkin come to Damariscotta, part of Maine’s 40-mile Pumpkin Trail. The festivities include:\n\n* The Giant Pumpkin Drop, where a crane drops oversized pumpkins onto junk cars (all recycled materials, of course)\n* A non-motorized Pumpkin Derby\n* The [Pumpkinfest and Regatta](http://www.mainepumpkinfest.com/event/pumpkinboat-regatta/) where boats that incorporate real pumpkins race\n\nIf you’re heading to Pumpkinfest, add a CBD tincture to your pumpkin latte for energy and focus if you’re entering one of the competitions. Otherwise, a more calming CBD oil blend will have you relaxed for a day out on the water watching the pumpkins go by.\n\n### 3. Head to Spiritual Sedona, AZ for Your Healing Needs\n\n![Sedona, AZ](https://hellomd-gcs-production.imgix.net/orphan/markdown-image-injector/ownerId/image/db8e1883-2297-4e6c-a6ed-ef80e5ab264c?auto=format&dpr=1.7999999523162842)\n\nIf fall foliage isn’t your thing, then you may appreciate the red buttes and plateaus coloring the American southwest. Grand Canyon visits are a must in this part of the world. But take a slight detour on the way up to the famed national park and you’ll hit Sedona, a basecamp for a host of other activities. \n\nNeighboring Red Rock State Park is a short drive away from Sedona, filled with its own natural scenery. The 286-acre nature preserve offers many trails for hiking and mountain biking.\n\nThe region’s wide-open space also guarantees no shortage of stargazing. Lowell Observatory is about an hour drive from Sedona if you’ve got the time. It’s one of the oldest observatories in the U.S.—it’s where astronomers discovered the dwarf planet Pluto in 1930.\n\nBut besides all of these natural sights, Sedona is a spiritual destination. With an array of retreats from yoga and meditation to counseling and therapy sessions, many people head to Sedona with healing in mind.\n\nAs a place of enlightenment, Sedona can be a destination for self-exploration. Why not pick a trail to hike and do a little yoga along the way? You can incorporate a CBD vape pen, tincture or edible into your day to not only help your body keep going on the trail, but to quiet your mind as you enjoy the incredible vistas surrounding you. \n\n### 4. Get Your Fill of Frightful Corn Mazes in Grand Ledge, MI\n\nIf hiking’s not your thing, consider Grand Ledge, Michigan. Here you can take in the fall colors from the comfort of a cruise on Michigan’s longest river, Grand River. The [Color Cruise and Island Festival](https://www.grandledgechamber.com/color_cruise_and_island_festiv.php) centers around these riverboats. It’s a great way to see the fall leaves and have fun with some photography as the trees are reflected on the river.\n\nFor more of a workout, there are 500-million-year-old sandstone ledges that draw rock climbers from all over. Located at the 78-acre Fitzgerald Park, the ledges (and Grand River), give the city its name; there are also nature and hiking trails for non-climbers.\n\nMoving from the riverside to the corn fields we have [Bestmaze](http://bestmaze.com/2018/08/08/hello-world/). Bestmaze is a massive corn maze with intricate designs that change yearly—fun for young and old alike. \n\nBestmaze has a Trail of Terror, perfect for those looking to get their adrenaline pumping and to get your Halloween spirit going. Nab a bite of a CBD edible, move forward and wait for the effects to keep you calm while you try to find the path out of the maze. \n\nThe fall offers lower prices and smaller crowds as the summer season draws to a close, but be sure to book a trip before the winter chill sets in. With these destinations, the crisp autumn air paired with your favorite CBD product (and maybe some fresh apple cider along the way), should make the journey worth it.\n\nPhoto credit: Rohappy/Shutterstock.com (main image), Andriy Blokhin/Shutterstock.com (Leavenworth, WA image), Timothy L Barnes/Shutterstock.com (Sedona, AZ image)\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? While we’re not sure if that’s strictly true, he may have been onto the benefits of enjoying shorter forms of entertainment.\n\nWatching a movie is one of the best things to do when you consume cannabis—but they’re such a commitment. If you’re also folding laundry or swiping through Instagram, paying attention to the plot of a feature-length film can be difficult.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nBut this is where movie trailers come in. They’re the ultimate form of passive entertainment—and efficient, too. You can watch any movie you want in under five minutes. \n\nIf you’re enjoying a relaxing indica cannabis strain such as [Purple Urkle](https://hellomd.com/strains/purple-urkle/), or something more stimulating like [these five marijuana strains that help fight fatigue](https://hellomd.com/articles/top-5-marijuana-strains-to-fight-fatigue/), movie trailers can really set the mood. \n\nMovie trailers can be anything from relaxing to surreal to just plain absurd. So, break out the popcorn and check out this list of our favorite trailers to watch after you’ve consumed some marijuana.\n\n### 1. The Emoji Movie: A World of Fun Visual Effects \n\nThe best thing about trailers is being able to enjoy movies you probably wouldn’t want to watch in their entirety. This [ironically awesome trailer for “The Emoji Movie”](https://www.imdb.com/videoplayer/vi1686157593) seems like something your kids would force you to see, if they were old enough to use a phone. \n\nAfter trying a sativa marijuana strain like [White Widow](https://hellomd.com/strains/white-widow/), known for enhancing visual effects, you may actually enjoy looking at these smiling tennis balls in a surreal, animated world, voiced by comedy legends like Maya Rudolph and Steven Wright. \n\n### 2. 500 Days of Summer: A Great Rom Com With Zooey Deschanel & Joseph Gordon-Levitt \n\nThis [trailer for \"500 Days of Summer”](https://www.imdb.com/videoplayer/vi2234581785) brings all the feels and would pair well if you’re reaching for a calming indica cannabis strain. \n\nEven if you’re normally not a fan of romantic comedies, you may enjoy this one about a woman who doesn’t believe in being in relationships and the man who falls in love with her at first sight. \n\nSince this one came out in 2009, you may find it refreshing to see these two romantically staring at each other nonstop instead of simply texting back and forth. The spontaneous musical dances will also put a smile on your face if you’ve had a stressful day. \n\n### 3. The Goonies: The Height of ‘80s Music & Fashion \n\nYou should definitely scan [the ‘80s classic “The Goonies”](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089218/videoplayer/vi316781849?ref_=tt_pv_vi_aiv_2) for fashion tips. Between Stef’s super ‘80s glasses and Chunk’s aloha shirt, there are many to choose from. \n\nThis trailer has it all—except, regrettably, the iconic Cyndi Lauper song “The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough” that features in the film. You could always turn the sound down on the trailer and play the song while watching to get the full Goonies experience. \n\n### 4. Turkish Star Wars: The Bootleg Cult Treasure of Star Wars Movies\n\nIf you’re up for a unique and admittedly somewhat bizarre and absurd trailer that will leave you howling, [cue up this trailer for “Turkish Star Wars”](https://vimeo.com/267279123). This is an incredibly low-budget ‘80s cult film that features bootleg “Star Wars” footage set to the stolen soundtrack from “Indiana Jones”. \n\nIf you've ever been high near a college campus, this movie will take you right back there. If you’re going to give “Turkish Star Wars” a try, pair it with a sativa marijuana strain that makes you laugh, like [Jack Herer](https://hellomd.com/strains/jack-herer/), which should help you get ready for epic kung fu scenes in a cave—with mummies, robots and wizards. \n\n### 5. Purple Rain: Uplifting & Happy Music Featuring Prince at His Best\n\nThe man, the myth, the artist formerly known as Prince. If you’re in need of something fun and uplifting, check out [this trailer for the film that put Prince on the map: “Purple Rain”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuXK8ZbTmLk). \n\nThis trailer is ideal viewing after consuming a sativa cannabis strain that makes you happy and focused. You’ll want to pay close attention to the ruffled shirts, hip twisting and spikey lapels. Also, be sure not to miss Prince jumping over a hill on a purple motorcycle.\n\n### 6. Jiro Dreams of Sushi: A Trailer That Will Have You Salivating \n\nWhy spend hundreds of dollars on the world’s finest sushi when you can watch [the trailer for the surprisingly compelling documentary “Jiro Dreams of Sushi”?](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1772925/videoplayer/vi829333017?ref_=tt_ov_vi) \n\nJiro is a master chef who embodies the tradition and work ethic central to Japanese cuisine. \nThis film truly brings the craftsmanship of sushi to life. The shot of soy sauce going off a paint brush in slow motion is truly amazing and would pair well with appetite-inducing marijuana strains like [White Fire OG](https://hellomd.com/strains/white-fire-og/) or [Blueberry](https://hellomd.ca/strains/blueberry/).\n\n### 7. The Beastmaster: Cute Animals in an Epic Barbarian Fantasy\n\n[“The Beastmaster”](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083630/videoplayer/vi3784638745?ref_=tt_ov_vi) looks like a standard barbarian film, but it features a man who can speak to animals, including a killer hawk and twin ferrets. So, it may be obvious that this trailer would pair well with a cannabis strain that always leaves you in a fit of giggles. \n\nIf you like surfer hair, goofy monsters, and unnaturally huge muscles that remind you of a certain former California governor, this cult classic’s for you.\n\nRELATED:[Top 5 Cannabis Products to Take to the Movies](https://hellomd.com/articles/top-5-cannabis-products-to-take-to-the-movies/)\n\n### 8. Kedi: An Artsy Cat Documentary Set in Istanbul\n\nIf you’re a cat person, then you definitely need to invest a few minutes in watching [the cat movie to end all cat movies—Kedi”](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4420704/videoplayer/vi4141857305?ref_=tt_ov_vi). \nThe [indica marijuana strain Northern Lights](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7ce57ed520d60009f4f4bb/northern-lights) would be ideal to consume before you watch this one. However, athletes may reach their goals at a cost. \n\nFirst, there’s the preparation for performance—making sure you’re rested and in peak condition mentally and physically. And on the day of your athletic event, you must feel relaxed and focused.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) and [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nThen, there’s the recovery afterward where you need to deal with the pain of the performance, the damage done to muscles and tissue, and any lingering tension from competition.\n\nWhile there’s a host of treatments and techniques to deal with sports performance and recovery, cannabidiol (CBD) is increasingly moving up the podium among athletes who want a more natural way to:\n\n* Deal with pain and inflammation\n* Address muscle damage\n* Replenish themselves with deep sleep \n* Relax frayed nerves\n\n“[Some people have [CBD] the night before a workout](https://www.gq.com/story/cbd-fitness-supplements),” says triathlete Andrew Talanksy in an interview with GQ. “Usually less have it during. And most are stoked to have it after as recovery.” \n\nFor his part, Andrew ingests CBD capsules to:\n\n* Ease regular post-performance aches and pains\n* Get much-needed sleep \n* Reduce the stress of competition\n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS FOR ATHLETES? VAPEXHALES FOUNDER SAYS YES](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-for-athletes-vapexhales-founder-says-yes/) \n\n“[CBD for exercise-induced inflammation](https://health.usnews.com/wellness/fitness/articles/2018-05-11/can-cbd-products-improve-your-fitness-results) is absolutely the next big area we need to explore,” says Thorsten Rudroff, an exercise scientist and director of the Integrative Neurophysiology Laboratory at Colorado State University, in a _U.S. News_ interview. \n\nBut he adds: “Most of what we know about CBD and exercise is based on anecdotal reports. There's basically no research on the topic. We need to investigate CBD's effects on inflammatory biomarkers in athletes and exercise recovery.” \n\n### Athletes Turn to CBD to Address Pain & Inflammation\n\nTwo years ago, the World Anti-Doping Agency and the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency removed CBD from their list of prohibited substances. Though tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), with its psychoactive effects, as well as synthetic cannabinoids, are still on the list of banned substances.\n\nSo, athletes are free to explore consuming CBD to see how it can supplement the natural defenses of the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) to deal with pain and inflammation.\n\nThorsten points out that he’s seen increasing numbers of collegiate and professional athletes, and older adults, consuming CBD oils and edibles right after exercise, hoping to recover more quickly and effectively.\n\nInflammation after a hard workout isn’t in itself a bad thing. It triggers the body’s repair mechanisms, allowing muscle tissue to grow back stronger, improving future athletic performances. \n\nBut too much tissue damage and inflammation can injure the body with strains and sprains, and result in poor athletic results.\n\nTraditional ways to cope with inflammation and pain include:\n\n* Eating antioxidant-rich foods\n* Taking ice baths\n* Consuming over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen (Advil) and naproxen sodium (Aleve)\n* Using opioids (for severe pain management)\n\nStudies have shown that cannabis can help reduce pain, which can include stiff joints and musculoskeletal pain from exercise. \n\nAnd while athletes have used NSAIDs for decades, they’re also associated with kidney damage and increased risk of heart attack and stroke. So, some athletes are finding that [CBD can relieve pain with minimal side effects](https://trainright.com/cbd-for-athletes-cannabidiol/). \n\nWhile opioids may be very successful at managing pain, they can come at a cost that may include addiction and death. CBD isn’t as successful at dealing with high-intensity pain, but may have a role to play in long-term pain management, taken on its own or alongside other medications.\n\nThere are also some suggestions that CBD can help slow the breakdown of muscles after exertion and even promote more muscle building. For example, preliminary research offered by the _Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research_ suggests that [CBD works in conjunction with the ECS to interfere with cortisol](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8257923), the stress hormone that reduces protein production and gets in the way of tissue growth.\n\n### But Can CBD Improve Actual Sports Performance? \n\nWhen it comes to sports performance itself, CBD’s benefits are harder to quantify. Yes, the cannabinoid can help relieve stress and promote sleep, both of which can help athletes compete better. \n\nBut this isn’t the same as a direct link in helping during the event or game. And when marathon runners talk about the help cannabis gave them while out on the course, it’s usually in regard to the effects of THC, not CBD.\n\nSays Michael Kennedy, a cardiologist and clinical pharmacologist who examined 15 studies on cannabis and exercise performance: “Different types of cannabis may have a lot of therapeutic values—but none of it will make you run fast, and it won’t make you stronger.” \n\n### Ways Athletes Can Consume CBD\n\nIn taking CBD, athletes have a choice of:\n\n* Oils\n* Capsules\n* Infused foods and drinks\n* Vaping \n\nFor the fastest pain and inflammation relief, you can choose from:\n\n* Vaping\n* Sublingual tinctures\n* Topical creams applied directly to the injured area \n\nThough vaping may be the consumption method that produces effects the fastest, many athletes would probably resist doing anything that risks stressing their lungs. \n\nFor longer-lasting effects, infused drinks and edibles may be the way to go.\n\nIt can get tricky when deciding what CBD dose to consume. First, it’s sometimes hard to calculate doses, because the amount of CBD that’s actually in different products varies so much and the bioavailability (how much CBD is actually accessible in your body) of each consumption method is different. The most precise way to take CBD may be capsules, or by calculating how many milligrams of CBD are in a given volume of a tincture.\n\nBut as a rule of thumb, if you’re new to CBD, it’s best to start with a low dose and work your way up. After all, you have to learn to walk before you run.\n\nPhoto credit: oneinchpunch/Shutterstock.com\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? Many of us will take this opportunity to make the most of the last day off before it’s back to school, back to work and the monotony of fall sets in. (Can you tell I hate that summer has to end?)\n\nYou may have some epic Labor Day plans, like a barbecue with tons of friends. Maybe your day will involve some time on the lake, at a river or a beach soaking up the last of the summer rays. Or maybe you’re planning on just chilling out at home, having a quiet, free day before it’s back to the grind.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nBut whatever your Labor Day plans, you may want to think about including cannabis in the mix. Depending on the type and consumption method, the right marijuana can:\n\n* Uplift mood \n* Help you feel less anxious (if crowds aren’t your thing or you’re nervous about hanging with people you don’t know well)\n* Ease pain\n* Stimulate your appetite\n\nRELATED: [FINDING SUCCESS WITH CANNABIS TO REDUCE ANXIETY](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-cbd-and-thc-affect-our-bodies-response-to-fear/)\n\nAnother thing that guarantees a great gathering is music. The right music sets the tone and helps people let down their hair to enjoy the day. The best course of action is to come up with a playlist before Labor Day, so you aren’t playing DJ when you should be mingling with friends. So, here are some HelloMD staff picks for songs to put on your cannabis-friendly Labor Day playlist.\n\n### Make Your Cannabis-Friendly Playlist as Random as You Like\n\nI love making playlists (and mixtapes in my younger years) and have ones for different places, activities and moods. I like to put my playlists on random, so I never know what song’s going to come on next.\n\nIf you need some help getting your cannabis-friendly Labor Day playlist started, here are five of my suggestions:\n\n* **“Jimmy Mack” by Martha and the Vandellas:** You can’t really go wrong with Motown. And if you’re feeling great after consuming some uplifting cannabis, [“Jimmy Mack” by Martha and the Vandellas](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obvSFWvgBhg), with its upbeat handclap rhythm and fun vocals, is a definite crowd pleaser for your guests of all ages. And it can fit in at any kind of gathering, whether you’re hosting a dance party or just lounging at home.\n\n* **“Poison” by Bel Biv DeVoe:** If you’re up for a bit of ‘90s nostalgia, [“Poison” by Bel Biv DeVoe](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sb2np1HGqxg) is a classic mix of an R&B hook and harmonizing vocals over hip hop beats. If you’ve got some guests at your Labor Day festivity who are a little shy, offer them a microdose of cannabis to relax them and then play this song. They’ll be dancing with everyone in seconds. \n\nRELATED: [3 POPULAR QUESTIONS ABOUT MARIJUANA & MICRODOSING ANSWERED](https://hellomd.com/tag/microdosing/)\n\n* **“Turn the Light” by Karen O & Danger Mouse:** If you’re having a mellow Labor Day, or are winding down your festivities,[“Turn the Light”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irNdfijo9n0) by Yeah Yeah Yeah’s frontwoman Karen O. and musician/producer extraordinaire Danger Mouse will give you cool lounge vibes with a sensual feel. Sip on a cannabis mocktail, put on this song and savor the end of fun summer nights.\n\n* ** “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen:** I mean, it doesn’t hurt to be a little high when listening to this unlikely (and I think we can all agree wacky) masterpiece. [“Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJ9rUzIMcZQ) is also a crowd favorite and it’s fun to watch people of all ages sing along to the opera parts and rock out during the guitar solo. This is definitely the track to put on after consuming some marijuana to get the party started. \n\n* ** “Africa” by Toto:** A mellow ‘80s vibe with a great hook, [“Africa” by Toto](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTQbiNvZqaY) is a pretty versatile track—ideal for road trips if you’re traveling on Labor Day, or when everyone sits down to eat at your barbecue or party. With soaring instrumentals and a bit of ‘80s cheese, everyone will love singing along to this classic tune—especially after consuming some cannabis. \n\n### 3 Songs to Take You Through All Phases of Your Labor Day\n\n**[Sonya T.](https://www.hellomd.com/people/5c4f5d814dc2bc140a8a265d/Sonya) social media manager:** “My song picks for a cannabis Labor Day are:\n\n* [\"Show Me Love\" by Robin S.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ps2Jc28tQrw)\n* [\"Electric Relaxation\" by A Tribe Called Quest](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHRnvjCkTsw) \n* [\"Elevators (Me & You)\" by Outkast](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqB_UVlhlPA)\n \nI’m picturing these three songs taking me through the day. \"Show Me Love\" starts off with high-energy house music when you’re at a party and everyone’s dancing. And then \"Electric Relaxation\" is perfect for the middle of the day. You're still partying but chilling at the same time. And then Outkast’s \"Elevators\" is like that late-night ride back home when you’re, let’s say, elevated. You're just chilling at the end of the day and you're like, ‘I had a great day.’” \n\n### “Running Up That Hill” by Kate Bush\n\n**[Danielle L.,](https://www.hellomd.com/people/59c02607064564000f877688/danielle-lim) senior health & wellness writer:** “For my Labor Day playlist suggestion, I'm going to go with [\"Running Up That Hill\" by Kate Bush](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wp43OdtAAkM). I feel like it's the song that my partner and I always put on when we're going on a road trip because it's one of the few artists that we both really like. Whenever I'm in the car driving somewhere with my friends I just put on Kate Bush because we all agree on her all the time. So, I guess this would be my pick if you’re driving somewhere for Labor Day. \n\n“To me ‘Running Up That Hill’ is this really sad but great song and I like listening to it after I’ve taken cannabis. After you consume and listen to this song, you can hear different sounds that you didn’t before.\n\n“I’d also encourage people to check out the music video for this song. It’s super dreamy and the colors are great. It’s really ‘80s and very purple and she’s performing modern dance with a man. It’s mesmerizing.” \n\n### “Summertime” by DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince \n\n**[Veronica B.,](https://www.hellomd.com/people/583c9403925c1a000b5029bb/VeronicaB) customer service specialist:** “My song for a cannabis-friendly Labor Day playlist would probably be [\"Summertime\" by DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kr0tTbTbmVA). I like that song just because it really describes a nice, mellow, easygoing day.\n\n\"Everything's chill; it's a nice day out; everyone's hanging out, and there’s no drama. It just seems like the kind of mood that you want to channel right before the summer ends. I definitely like that it's a positive song—it's not really aggressive, which I really like.” \n\n### 3 Songs for a Labor Day Dance Party\n\n**[Ryan G.,](https://www.hellomd.com/people/5978f93daa0db4145a24da3f/ryang) customer service manager:** “It’s difficult for me to just pick one song so, I would pick three: \n\n* [\"Summertime in the LBC\" by The Dove Shack](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlLvRY8QoY4)\n* [\"Time of Your Life\" by Kid Ink](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1WuKhhms5c)\n* [\"September\" by Earth, Wind & Fire](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gs069dndIYk)\n\n“I grew up in California, so ‘Summertime in the LBC’ always just takes me back anytime I hear that song. It reminds me of summer as far as a really relaxing day with family and friends at a barbecue. It's just something that you can nod your head to.” \n\n“‘Time of Your Life’ I feel is definitely a late-in-the-night song where you're just having a bunch of fun, hanging out with friends and family, eating, laughing and having a good time. \n\n“And ‘September’ by Earth, Wind & Fire actually makes me think a lot about family. You may be surprised at how great a cannabis-infused kombucha tea is for you.\n\n### Why Is Kombucha Tea Good for You?\n\nThere’s a lot of hype surrounding kombucha and for good reason. It’s a fermented tea drink, made by taking green or black tea and adding:\n\n* Particular strains of bacteria\n* Yeast\n* Sugar \n\nDuring the fermentation process, the bacteria and yeast will form a [symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY) on top of the surface](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCOBY). Don’t be alarmed. This is a good thing. Once the SCOBY’s fully formed, you can use it to make new batches of kombucha. The whole process takes about 10 days.\n\n[Kombucha contains lots of probiotic bacteria](https://www.webmd.com/digestive-disorders/what-are-probiotics#1) such as:\n\n* Acetobacter\n* Gluconacetobacter\n* Lactobacillus\n* Zygosaccharomyces \n\nEach of these bacteria promotes gut health, which influences so many processes in your body. Probiotic bacteria help line the digestive tract and aid in nutrient absorption while strengthening immune systems to combat infections.\n\nRELATED: [HOW CANNABIS CAN KEEP YOU HEALTHY VIA YOUR GUT MICROBIOME](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-cannabis-can-keep-you-healthy-via-your-gut-microbiome/)\n\nKombucha tea is also a great source of antioxidants that can help reduce toxicity in the liver and can also [neutralize free radicals](https://www.webmd.com/diet/antioxidants-directory). And folks are finding relief, because of the various natural and active ingredients in cannabis: cannabinoids and terpenes. \n\nEach cannabis strain has its own combination and ratio of cannabinoids like:\n\n* [Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)](https://hellomd.com/articles/the-pros-and-cons-of-psychoactive-thc/)\n* [Cannabidiol (CBD)](https://hellomd.com/articles/whats-so-great-about-cannabidiol-or-cbd/)\n* [Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV)](https://hellomd.com/articles/psychoactive-thcv-the-cannabinoid-that-kills-your-appetite/)\n* [Cannabigerol (CBG)](https://hellomd.com/articles/cbg-is-this-cannabinoid-more-powerful-than-cbd/)\n\nThe plant (and all plants for that matter) also contains therapeutic terpenes such as:\n\n* [Linalool](https://hellomd.com/articles/know-your-cannabis-terpenes-linalool/)\n* [Beta-caryophyllene](https://hellomd.com/articles/know-your-terpenes-beta-caryophyllene/)\n* [Limonene](https://hellomd.com/articles/know-your-cannabis-terpenes-limonene/)\n\nThese compounds can help address a range of health conditions like:\n\n* Chronic pain\n* Anxiety\n* Insomnia\n* Central nervous system diseases\n\nBoth cannabis and kombucha come with many health benefits. So, when taken together, you’re getting a drink that’s beneficial to your overall health.\n\n### DIY Cannabis-Infused Kombucha Tea Recipe\n\nNow that you know all about the health benefits you get from both cannabis and kombucha tea, let’s put them together. The process is simple. All you need are: \n\n* About 4 cannabis tea packets*\n* 1 cup organic cane sugar (or other sugar substitute such as agave or honey)\n* SCOBY\n* 1 cup of store-bought kombucha (first batch only)\n* 1 gallon of purified water (no tap water)\n* Sterilized glass bottles or jars with matching fermentation covers \n\n*You have several different options for how to infuse your kombucha tea with marijuana. If you live in an area where you have access to cannabis tea that’s available for legal purchase, you can just use that. Alternatively, you can make your own cannabis tea by adding decarboxylated cannabis flower to your favorite tea bags. Another method would be to make your kombucha tea as normal and add a dose of your favorite cannabis tincture to your glass before drinking. \n\nNow that we have all of our ingredients and materials together, let’s begin the process to make a cannabis-infused kombucha tea:\n\n1. Boil the purified water while adding the sugar. Stir until all of the sugar is dissolved. Now add whatever tea bags you’re using and let them steep.\n2. Let tea cool to room temperature before adding the SCOBY and kombucha. Note that adding the SCOBY before the tea is at room temperature can ruin the process.\n3. Pour in a half cup of kombucha, then add the SCOBY to the mixture.\n4. Now place covers over each container. Keep the containers in a warm place, away from the sun.\n5. Let it sit for 10 days to allow for fermentation.\n\nOnce you’ve learned the process to make cannabis-infused kombucha tea, you can start experimenting with it. Try different strains of cannabis-infused tea bags to find your favorite pairings.\n\nOf course, remember to proceed with caution when it comes to marijuana edibles. If you aren’t sure how much is right for you, you can absolutely use fewer cannabis-infused tea bags for your first batch. For example, you could always use 2 regular and 2 cannabis tea bags if you want to make your cannabis-infused kombucha tea less potent. \n\nHomebrewing is a fun and rewarding process, but it can be difficult at first. Don’t get discouraged and keep trying to perfect your process in making this delicious drink—you’ll be happy you did.\n\nPhoto credit: Anna Fedorova_it/Shutterstock.com\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. All of us want it; not enough of us have it. The things that we think bring us happiness are often temporary and unsatisfying in the end. We’re not entirely clear what causes happiness, how to define it or what sustains it. \n\nBut this isn’t to say we’re incapable of continued happiness. There are happiness hacks that can bring us closer to a blissful state, and this can adjust our outlook on life to a more positive one. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nWe give you five happiness hacks that you can incorporate into your life—and of course, one of those hacks includes consuming cannabis. It’s not just that the plant can give you the giggles for a few hours, but studies show the plant works with our bodies on a chemical level to help us feel happier and more optimistic. \n\n### The Neurochemicals of Happiness\n\nBesides the roles that genetics, circumstances and character play in bringing happiness, there are the hundreds of neurochemicals our body produces, some of them directly connected to our sense of well-being. For example, [an article in _Psychology Today_](https://www.psychologytoday.com/ca/blog/the-athletes-way/201211/the-neurochemicals-happiness) highlights many of them, including:\n\n* **Endocannabinoids:** These are compounds that the body itself produces. Very similar to the cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, they also interact with the CB1 and CB2 receptors comprising the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The most well-known endocannabinoid is anandamide, which comes from the Sanskrit “ananda,” meaning bliss.\n\nRELATED: [EATING ANANDAMIDE: THE BLISS MOLECULE](https://hellomd.com/articles/eating-anandamide-the-bliss-molecule/)\n\n* **Dopamine:** Sometimes associated with addictive drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamine, dopamine is responsible for reward-driven behavior and pleasure seeking. Setting a goal and achieving it will set off a dopamine rush.\n* **Oxytocin:** This hormone is connected to human bonding and increasing trust and loyalty.\n* **Endorphins:** In their chemical structure, endorphins resemble opiates and have pain-relieving properties.\n* **GABA:** This is “an inhibitory molecule that slows down the firing of neurons and creates a sense of calmness.” It’s released through pursuits such as yoga and meditation.\n* **Serotonin:** Among the many roles that this neurochemical plays is that it helps build confidence. “Ultimately, the link between higher serotonin and a lack of rejection sensitivity allows people to put themselves in situations that will bolster self-esteem, increase feelings of worthiness and create a sense of belonging,” according to _Psychology Today_\n* **Adrenaline:** Known for its energy-boosting properties, adrenaline plays a big role in the flight-or-fight response. A surge of adrenaline makes you feel exhilarated and alive.\n\n### 5 Ways to Get & Stay Happy Including Taking Cannabis\n\nHere are five ways you can boost some of these feel-good chemicals in your body and brain to feel more content and positive. \n\n1. **Consuming cannabis:** If you’re considering the neurochemical basis for happiness and well-being, then one obvious way to achieve this is with cannabis and its connection to the (ECS). As noted above, anandamide is the bliss molecule—and it has a connection to the plant. \n\n> Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in marijuana shares a similar chemical structure to anandamide and works on the same CB1 receptor, creating feelings of joy, euphoria and happiness. It also serves to boost the body's internally produced anandamide. \n\n> Cannabidiol (CBD) can also play a role, helping block the breakdown of the natural anandamide in our bodies, to keep the happy feelings going for longer. \n\n> Generally, sativa cannabis strains are what folks recommend to elevate mood. Though for some, too much of an energizing sativa strain can lead to feeling jittery and even paranoid. In this case, a hybrid strain or even an indica with effects that aren’t too sedative could be your best bet. Some cannabis strains to try are:\n\n> * [Super Lemon Haze](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7ce2f6d520d60009f4f4b4/super-lemon-haze)\n> * [GSC](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7ce3c1d520d60009f4f4b6/gsc)\n> * [Strawberry Banana](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5b3272d89755250007f2b61f/strawberry-banana)\n\nRELATED: [WHY DOES CANNABIS MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD?](https://hellomd.com/articles/why-does-cannabis-make-you-feel-good/)\n\n2. **Going outside:** Spending even 20 minutes a day outside (in good weather) is proven to boost mood and even improve memory. \n\n> A study conducted by researchers at the University of Sussex confirmed that “being outdoors, near the sea, on a warm, sunny weekend afternoon is the perfect spot for most. In fact, [participants were found to be substantially happier outdoors in all natural environments than they were in urban environments](https://interestingengineering.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-science-of-happiness).”\n\n3. **Staying active:** Exercising daily can release proteins and endorphins that make you feel good. Luckily, living in California, I can access this plant-based medicine where so many others are denied. Ultimately, medical marijuana transformed my health—and my life. \n\nTaking cannabis every day eliminated both my chronic pain as well as the anxiety that accompanied my headaches. And today, my lifestyle is far more active as a result. For instance, this summer I’ll be hiking the John Muir Trail (JMT), the legendary 21-day, 211-mile California backwoods trek from Yosemite Valley to Mt. Whitney. You think if I still had recurring migraines I’d attempt this off-the-grid, grueling trip? Absolutely not. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nAnd I don’t intend to stop medicating with marijuana while I’m out on the trails. Cannabis has helped me feel well enough to take on this physical challenge, and here’s how I’ll be taking cannabis to prevent migraines (the last thing I need) during the hike, help my physical recovery and keep me in a smiling, happy mood, no matter what we encounter out in the wilderness. \n\n### All About the John Muir Trail\n\nThe JMT is a trail that cuts through California’s High Sierra mountain range and is also part of the larger Pacific Coast Trail (PCT). It’s often considered to be one of the most visually stunning trails in the United States, and it’s also one of the mildest and sunniest mountain ranges in the world. The trail crosses through epic landscapes including:\n\n* The Ansel Adams Wilderness\n* The John Muir Wilderness\n* Sequoia National Park\n* Kings Canyon National Park\n* Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the continental U.S. \n\n\nThe JMT is considered a difficult trek, testing a hiker’s limits across body, mind and spirit. In other words, a backpacker’s paradise.\n\n### Why Hike the John Muir Trail?\n\nA lot of people ask me why I’m hiking the JMT. The simplest answer is that I’m doing it for me. \n\nThe past seven years of my life have been devoted to cannabis. During my time at HelloMD, I’ve listened to and learned from thousands of people who yearn for and often obtain a better quality of life through cannabis. The plant has also helped me go from a life of imbalance to one of personal strength and self-empowerment. \n\nFor me, the harmonious balance of body, mind and spirit is always the goal. Achieving this balance, even for a short time, is what I consider optimal wellness. My strategies to help me achieve my wellness goals include, but aren’t exclusive to: \n\n* A healthy diet tailored to my needs, including the elimination of alcohol\n* Regular exercise with Vinyasa yoga, and other movements that inspire me\n* Working to feel connected with those around me\n* Putting the phone down for much-needed family time\n* Getting at least eight hours of sleep per night\n* Smiling and laughing as much as possible\n* Being more present in the moment\n* Consuming cannabidiol (CBD) and microdosing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) daily\n* Communing with nature and hiking in the beautiful hills next to my house\n\nThrough the years of hiking, I’ve found a personal reset button that calms my being, centers my mind and allows me to more accurately perceive the world around me. \n\n![Pamela Hadfield hiking with cannabis](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-46ba949b-9bba-4cd1-ac69-34eecab14000/original.png)\n\nIt’s not easy finding peace when there’s constant pressure. We’re pressed for time, money, love, acceptance or whatever else we’re endlessly seeking. My belief is that sometimes we need to stop the train, get off and take a good look around.\n\nHiking the JMT isn’t a be-all answer to my optimal wellness, but I expect that I’ll gain valuable insights about myself and my life. At the same time, I’ll be giving myself the gift of a tremendous experience of walking meditation, pushing my personal limits and improving my fitness in one of the world’s most spectacular natural environments. \n\nIt’s a luxury to have the time to indulge myself in this dream, and it won’t be easy leaving my family and work behind, much less hot showers. But it’s also a reminder that I’m only here for a short time; I need to live my life and fulfill my dreams while I’m still on this planet. \n\n### Why I’m Bringing Cannabis Along on My Hike\n\nCBD and THC are two welcome additions to my backpack, and both will be making the journey with me.\n\nCBD has been reported to be:\n\n* An anti-inflammatory\n* An antispasmodic \n* An effective pain reliever \n\nCBD is responsible for stopping my migraines, and I’ve consumed it daily for years as a preventative measure. It also helps me if I feel agitated, an emotion I assume I may feel while ascending steep mountains while also running at a high-calorie deficit. \n\nIn microdoses, THC helps me get in my zone and also acts as a potent pain reliever, which I’ll need after daily 10–13-mile hikes at elevation. I’m also facing facts: I’m likely to have a lot of aches and pains—I’m not 21 anymore.\n\nMy CBD product of choice is Rosette’s No. 20 Rich Cannabis Tincture, which has a 20:1 ratio of CBD to THC. Because of the CBD to THC ratio, it doesn’t make me feel high like a THC-rich product does and has been my go-to choice for years. I plan on taking 10 mg of the Rosette tincture in the morning and in the evening. \n\nWhen hiking, I’m also a big fan of transdermal cannabis patches, as they treat both localized and general pain. I’ll often wear a patch on the side of my hips or my lower back above the sacrum, which helps a lot with any discomfort I feel.\n\nDuring the day, I also plan to microdose THC from my CamelBak with Atlas Edibles’ delicious powdered cannabis drinks. This is my favorite breakout cannabis product of 2019. The form is absolute genius, because it’s a powder you mix with water, tea or any other beverage, not a ready-made drink like you may have seen in a dispensary. The powders are microdosed with CBD and THC, and they taste fantastic, with flavors like lemongrass ginger and pomegranate green tea. \n\nI also plan to bring along Atlas’ delicious granola bars, which I’ll microdose after dinner to help me sleep better throughout the night. \n\n \nIf you’re new to cannabis, it may be good to know that the way I microdose the plant never leaves me feeling high or consciously altered. Over the years, I’ve learned how to consume marijuana to help me feel my personal best. For me, it’s a cross section of specific product types like tinctures or vape pens from brands that I like and specific dosages I’ve landed on. \n\nEveryone’s different, and it may take a period of experimentation to find what works for you. We suggest always starting at a low dosage and taking it slow before consuming more. \n\nI’ll be leaving for the trail the last week in July, expecting to return some 21 days later, give or take a few. Wish me luck and please leave comments below if you’d like to share something about cannabis and hiking or give me advice if you’ve conquered the JMT yourself. \n\nPhoto credits: Simon Dannhauer/Shutterstock.com (main image), [Pamela Hadfield](https://www.instagram.com/p/ByDdWg7B_hq/) (Pamela image), [Atlas Edibles](https://www.instagram.com/p/BdBUW3ynJzD/) (Atlas Edibles granola image)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles.
