For this cannabis consumption method, you use a dab rig or pen to heat cannabis concentrates (shatter, wax or oil) to a high temperature, then inhale the resulting vapor. \n\nDabbing imparts a large dose of marijuana for fast and immediate effects. What was once thought of as a purely recreational way to consume cannabis, dabbing is now catching on in the medical marijuana community. It’s become the consumption method of choice for those dealing with acute pain or PTSD, because it delivers a high dose with quick effects. \n\nHere are our three most popular Q&As about dabbing from our [Answers](https://www.hellomd.com/answers) page. The information comes from knowledgeable members of the HelloMD community. Hopefully, their answers will help clear up any of the questions you have about how to dab as well as dabbing’s benefits. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Q: I've heard that pesticides are concentrated in wax. Is it true if you dab you may intake a bunch of chemicals?\n\nAnswer: [@herbabuena](https://www.hellomd.com/people/573a2139599ccf000c00000a/herbabuena)\nUnfortunately, many concentrates are made from flowers grown indoors with the use of pesticides (generally to combat the nearly unavoidable infestation of broad mites and russet mites). Often indoor growers also use chemical fertilizers. If these chemicals are present, then extraction methods used to create concentrates do indeed concentrate the chemical components. It's incredibly important to know the source of your flowers, and search out dispensaries and vendors that carry only pure, tested and if possible, outdoor-grown source material.\n\n[Read more answers to this question](https://www.hellomd.com/answers/5760bc64e4599e00070000c6/ive-heard-that-pesticides-are-concentrated-in-wax-is-it-true-if-you-dab-you-may-intake-a-bunch-of-chemicals).\n\n`embed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDYiH61QvzQ`\n\n### Q: I'm a medical patient that dabs with wax. It controls my chronic pain, is it bad for me?\n**_I read a recent article in the New York Times that claimed dabbing is horrible for people. I have used marijuana for years to control my pain, and dabbing is by far the most effective. Is there a reason I should be concerned about my health? I do not hallucinate or have psychosis, but find it takes away pain immediately._**\n\nAnswer: [@canada](https://www.hellomd.com/people/593e4fe443dc46484e096e73/canada) The article you read, did it mention that smoking dabs using a combustion method was more harmful than smoking flower/dry herbs using a combustion method? This has some studies that back it up, but it also depends on how much you are consuming. Dabs are much higher in THC levels, so you do not need to take as many hits. If you are not already, you should be using a vaporizer for dabs instead of a lighter/flame.\n\nRELATED: [DABBING MARIJUANA FOR GOOD HEALTH](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5ad9727c049b4f000a64e8ac/dabbing-marijuana-for-good-health)\n\n### Q: What's healthier on the lungs, dab vs. vaping dry herb?\n**_I am an ex-smoker and have recently been told to completely cut out any form of smoke going into my lungs. However, cannabis still has medical benefits I can take advantage of. What is healthier for my lungs—a dab vape pen or a volcano-type vaporizer?_**\n\nAnswer: [@hoppercaroline](https://www.hellomd.com/people/59fa3e2fe6af1011d6bea010/hoppercaroline) Consider the difference in materials. Concentrates have added ingredients to extract the oil from the plant matter. There is not much data about the health effects of this form of marijuana consumption. Flower has no added ingredients and can be found in the most organic form with clean processing and growth practices.\n\nDabs have always seemed to be more harsh of a hit to me. Likely, this is because there is much more active ingredient packed into a small amount. You might want to look into a vaporizer with the portability of a dab pen, but with flower capabilities.\n\nPhoto credit: [WeedPornDaily](https://www.flickr.com/people/weedporndaily/)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56201c206430320006bb0000/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. The team at Guild Extracts knew that a cannabis product with complete purity would offer uncontaminated, concentrated medicine to consumers, so it took an inductive, scientific approach to the process by isolating the compounds of interest.\n\nMike Clemmons, president and chief scientist at Guild Extracts says, “Part of it was to be disruptive. The other part was to usher in the next step [in cannabis consumption]. We really believe the next step [in what patients are looking for in their medical marijuana] is function.” \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nAs we collect more scientific research and anecdotal evidence on specific cannabinoids and terpenes, we’re learning more about each compound’s benefits. Guild Extracts is using that information and leading the charge on dabbing for health. The company uses analytical chemistry to bring isolated cannabinoids to consumers in a form that’s pure, trustworthy and effective. It’s proving the point that dabbing isn’t just for recreational marijuana consumers, but rather that dabbing pure concentrates can be beneficial for medical marijuana patients, too.\n\n### Is Dabbing Cannabis Healthy?\n\nMost people think of dabbing as solely for recreational use and for people who want to get as high as possible. But the high potency of [dabs can be a useful tool for medical marijuana patients](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a4fd8fc100a820006562f52/why-do-some-patients-dab-medical-marijuana). Some medical marijuana patients experience higher tolerance levels as they consume more cannabis. If you have to keep increasing the frequency and size of your cannabis doses to get relief, then you might be ready to try dabbing.\n\nRELATED: [WHY DO SOME PATIENTS DAB MARIJUANA?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a4fd8fc100a820006562f52/why-do-some-patients-dab-medical-marijuana)\n\nBesides providing access to a higher concentration of cannabinoids, people also argue that dabbing is healthy because at lower temperatures it’s akin to vaping. That said, dabbing can become dangerous when temperatures on a dab rig are set too high. In that case, you’re combusting the cannabis instead of vaporizing it. And as we all know, smoking cannabis does expose you to carcinogens and other unhealthy compounds. \n\nAs Mike describes, “There are over 400 compounds of interest in cannabis. When you light those on fire, it turns into more than 4,000 compounds. And many of those actually have negative health consequences.” Among these compounds are:\n\n* Carbon monoxide\n* Cyanides \n* Carcinogens\n\nThese dangerous compounds can compromise your immune system, trigger inflammation and affect many other tissues throughout your body.\n\nPatients who are consuming cannabis for therapeutic value will want to take as proactive an approach as possible to choosing a healthy marijuana consumption method. And this is where Guild Extracts advocates the following ways to consume cannabis:\n\n* Vaporization\n* Dabbing\n* Vape cartridges, provided you know the source of the oils and other ingredients\n\n### Patients Use Isolated Cannabinoids to Treat Various Health Conditions\n\nOne of the biggest benefits of Guild Extracts’ unique product offerings is the ability to target specific symptoms with isolates like crystalline cannabidiol (CBD) and raw THCA. Patients who are eager to further their cannabis health education come to Guild when they’re seeking out specific cannabinoids. \n\nMost of Guild’s customers are cancer patients as well as folks seeking relief from chronic pain and inflammation. “We’re seeing a lot of older people,” says Mike, “who are treating sleep troubles, appetite issues, chronic pain, inflammation and cancer.”\n\n### The Cannabinoids Reported to Be Effective Cancer Treatments\n\nCBD can be an effective treatment for a variety of conditions including:\n\n* Cancer\n* Epilepsy\n* Pain\n* Mood disorders\n* Multiple sclerosis\n* Muscle spasticity\n\nWith more and more CBD products on the market, it can be challenging to discern what brands are trustworthy. Cancer patients come to Guild as a trusted source of CBD because Guild’s CBD crystalline is 100% pure. This high quality alleviates concerns for patients who use CBD to treat more serious conditions—and whose health would be affected by other ingredients or additives. \n\nCancer patients also look to Guild for its delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-8 THC) extract. Delta-8 THC, which is different from the delta-9 THC that people talk about when they say THC, is helpful for cancer patients because, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) it has “[anti-emetic, anxiolytic, appetite-stimulating, analgesic and neuroprotective properties](https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-drug/def/delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol).” Dabbing delta-8 THC can alleviate nausea and pain, and increase appetite, without the paranoia sometimes associated with large doses of THC. \n\n### How Folks Treat Chronic Pain & Inflammation With THCA\n\nAnother group of patients using Guild’s products are those seeking relief from chronic pain and inflammation. These patients gravitate towards the THC products, including the raw THCA powder, which has no psychoactive effects when taken orally. \n\nRELATED: [THE MEDICINAL BENEFITS OF THCA](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/584f78817f091000089c44a4/the-medicinal-benefits-of-thca)\n\nTHCA has been proven to possess powerful anti-inflammatory benefits without the toxicity and negative health consequences of traditional steroid medications. This cannabinoid can be hard to find in a consumable form because [THCA turns into THC when heated](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a90bb3ef24d1300077ccb60/how-to-make-the-most-of-non-psychoactive-thca); this means many cannabis consumption methods, such as smoking, vaping or cooking with the plant, automatically turn the THCA into THC. This is one of the reasons why Guild’s 100% pure THCA powder made history when it launched in 2015. \n\n### Guild & the Future of Medical Marijuana\n\nGuild Extracts is pushing the medical marijuana industry into the future with its analytical approach to extraction and focus on patient results. As we continue to learn more about the endocannabinoid system and the effects of different cannabinoids on our bodies, Guild will be a company to watch. \n\nPhoto credit: [Guild Extracts](http://www.guildextracts.com/)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Many claim it’s a safer way to consume cannabis than smoking is. That said, the methods used to create butane hash oil (BHO), the highly concentrated form of marijuana used in dabbing, and the high temperatures produced by homemade dab rigs [can expose users to high levels of a variety of \r\ntoxins, including known carcinogens such as methacrylein and benzene](http://www.oregonlive.com/marijuana/index.ssf/2017/09/butane_hash_oil_releases_carci.html). When cannabis is smoked, parts of the whole plant are burned, so that users consume not only THC but also non-psychoactive cannabis compounds like cannabidiol (CBD). Smoking also means you consume marijuana’s terpenes—the compounds responsible for the many flavors and aromas of different cannabis strains. But in dabbing, marijuana is processed using butane oil— a highly volatile, flammable solvent that extracts the terpenes. The result is BHO, which can vary in consistency from hard and solid to soft and waxy.\r\n\r\n`embed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDYiH61QvzQ`\r\n\r\nA dab of BHO is placed on a small surface called a nail, which is heated to very high temperatures to produce vapors consisting mainly of concentrated THC. The amount of THC can range from 50–90%—far more than the amount found in the natural plant. BHO can also have a terpene content of up to 35%—far more than smoked cannabis typically has. It’s this combination of high terpene content and high heat that means dabbing can raise the risk of exposure to carcinogens and other toxins. \r\n\r\nRELATED: [CANNABIS & CARCINOGENS: WHAT’S THE RISK?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a467d02100a820006562f42/cannabis-and-carcinogens-whats-the-risk)\r\n\r\n### Terpenes & High Temperatures: A Risky Combination\r\n\r\nTerpenes are organic compounds found in the resins of plants of all kinds. Because they play a major role in creating a plant’s aroma and flavor, they’re used in a wide range of products such as essential oils, lotions, cosmetics and salves. \r\n\r\nCannabis has at least 70 terpenes. Many of them haven’t been well studied, so their effects are largely unknown, but [the most prevalent terpenes in cannabis include myrcene, limonene, pinene and humulene](http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acsomega.7b01130). In different combinations, these compounds provide the unique scents and flavors of the many cannabis strains. In the natural cannabis plant, terpenes are largely nontoxic, but they aren’t inert. \r\n\r\nBecause they bind to the body’s natural endocannabinoid receptors in the brain and other areas of the body like cannabinoids do, terpenes are responsible for some of the effects of cannabis such as feelings of euphoria and relaxation. They also interact with cannabinoids like THC and CBD to moderate their actions on the brain and body—a mechanism known as the entourage effect. To enhance the effects of terpenes in BHO, some users even practice “terp dipping,”dipping their dab in terpene extract before using it.\r\n\r\n[When terpenes are heated to high temperatures](https://www.healthline.com/health-news/heating-up-marijuana-could-increase-cancer-risk#1), either by burning natural plant parts during smoking, or by subjecting butane hash oil to extreme heat during dabbing, they break down. As they degrade, they produce toxins, including some known carcinogens such as benzene and methacrylein. And when a person inhales the vapor produced by highly concentrated BHO on a dab nail, those toxins can enter the lungs and bloodstream. \r\n\r\nDabbers claim that dabbing marijuana is safer than smoking it, because when cannabis smoke enters the lungs, it carries with it not only burning terpenes but also other toxic byproducts of combustion. But the high terpene content of BHO and the extreme temperatures at which it’s often vaporized can create a different scenario of risk. Researchers believe that [the higher the temperature terpenes are exposed to, the more carcinogens and toxins they produce](https://www.forbes.com/sites/janetwburns/2017/09/27/dabbing-cannabis-oil-may-expose-you-to-cancer-causing-toxins/#10ea91606651). \r\n\r\n### Dab Rigs Often Have No Heat Control\r\n\r\nAs [dabbing becomes more popular](http://cannabisscienceblog.com/tag/terpenes/), so has the production of professional-grade dab rigs with temperature controls. But for most users, a dab rig is still a DIY project, which usually involves using a culinary torch or other high-heat source to heat the BHO on a surface that might be a literal nail or other heat-resistant material. As the dab is heated, it releases its high-THC, high-terpene vapors that users inhale.\r\n\r\nBecause homemade dab rigs have no thermostat, it’s virtually impossible to control the temperature—and temperatures on the nail of these setups can reach as high as 900F—far out of the recommended “safety zone” of around 500 to 610F, before toxins begin to be released. \r\n\r\nRELATED: [WHY DO SOME PATIENTS DAB MEDICAL MARIJUANA](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a4fd8fc100a820006562f52/why-do-some-patients-dab-medical-marijuana)\r\n\r\n### Butane Can Be Risky, Too\r\n\r\nBHO is the most common kind of cannabis extract used in dabbing. As its name indicates, BHO is created by a process that involves using highly flammable n-Butane, a solvent that’s also used in disposable cigarette lighters and a variety of other petroleum products. That strips out the cannabinoids and terpenes, resulting in the highly concentrated oil. \r\n\r\nBut if the butane is poorly processed, it can leave behind toxic residues that are also inhaled when a dab is heated. Now, as commercial processors are producing more and safer cannabis products of all kinds, it’s possible to buy safer versions of butane-processed BHO in some cannabis-friendly states, but in most cases users are still making BHO at home, raising the risk of exposure to butane toxins along with the products of terpenes heated to high temperatures when dabbing cannabis.\r\n\r\nRELATED: [UNDERSTANDING CANNABIS CONCENTRATES & HOW TO USE THEM](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a3ab570100a820006562f30/understanding-cannabis-concentrates-and-how-to-use-them)\r\n\r\nThe popularity of dabbing comes from its ability to deliver a very concentrated, very potent form of THC along with the effects of far larger amounts of terpenes than in the natural cannabis plant. Dabbing involves inhaling rather than smoking, so this way of consuming cannabis reduces the risk of exposure to carcinogens produced by combustion. But if consumers aren’t careful, the high temperatures of many dab rigs can turn those beneficial terpenes into toxins.\r\n\r\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. In this article, we put the spotlight on dabbing, perhaps the most controversial method of using cannabis concentrates. While many argue that dabbing bears no medicinal value, others say it’s the only method that truly helps ease their symptoms or conditions.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nWondering if dabbing might be right for you? To help you decide, we lay out some of the reasons why dabbing cannabis is so controversial and explore why patients choose to dab.\n\nRELATED: [IS DABBING GOOD FOR YOU?](https://hellomd.com/articles/is-dabbing-good-for-you)\n\n### The Potential Risks Associated With Dabbing\n\nDabbing is a method of consuming cannabis concentrates usually in higher doses than are possible when using other methods. Patients dab using a dab rig, which is similar in appearance to a bong. But instead of having a glass bowl where flower is burned, a dab rig has a metal or quartz “nail.” When dabbing, this nail is heated and a dab of concentrate is dropped onto or pressed against the nail. At low temperatures, the concentrate is vaporized on contact, while at higher temperatures it combusts and is turned into smoke. Either way, the patient inhales the smoke or vapor through the neck of the dab rig and is quickly given a large dose of cannabinoids.\n\nDabbing has garnered a fairly bad reputation over the last few years—and not without cause. Because it makes taking large doses of cannabinoids very easy, it’s also extremely easy to take in more cannabis than is manageable and comfortable for a given individual. When dabbing high THC extracts, many folks report having had overwhelming experiences. [Some even head to the emergency room, complaining of distorted vision, overwhelming panic or other uncomfortable side effects from THC](https://hellomd.com/articles/why-dabbing-has-no-place-in-medical-marijuana). While these effects subside after the high wears off, the effects of a large dose of psychoactive THC can be very frightening. \n\nAnother controversial aspect of dabbing is the way the nail is heated. To heat the nail, many dabbers use a mini blow torch, which can occasionally leak butane and poses a potential fire hazard. We recommend avoiding this practice if you dab and instead opt for an e-nail, which is heated electronically.\n\nUsing an e-nail reduces the potential risks that come with using a blow torch, and it also allows you to have more control over the temperature of your dabs. Keeping your temperature low will result in a safer dab, as certain elements of your concentrate—such as terpenes—can become carcinogenic when exposed to extreme heat. According to a recent study published in the American Chemical Society's ACS Omega, [to be on the safe side you should set your e-nail to temperatures lower than 611 degrees F](http://pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.1021/acsomega.7b01130). \n\nDabbing is also controversial because most dabbers use concentrates that have been processed using butane. Butane not only poses health risks to humans when inhaled, but also carries risks for those making the extracts. Processing concentrates using this chemical can lead to explosions during manufacturing. To avoid the risks posed by the presence of this toxic and unstable chemical, we recommend using concentrates processed without chemical solvents. \n\n### Why Do Patients Dab Marijuana? \n\nGiven all of the risk factors that people face when dabbing, you may wonder why medical patients would ever choose to dab. There are so many cannabis options, you’d think that dabbing is really just something for recreational users. Still, many cannabis patients report that dabbing is the method that works best for them. And there are a number of reasons why some patients prefer it. \n\nThe most obvious reason to dab is that each dose packs a major potency punch. Concentrates are rich with cannabinoids and terpenes, the medicinally active elements of the cannabis plant. While this can send novice users into an uncomfortable psychoactive trip, for patients with a high tolerance, the high potency level might be just what’s needed.\n\nAs a writer and a cannabis-use consultant, I frequently meet patients who tell me that the only method that works for them is dabbing. I hear this most often from patients who have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Flashbacks to traumatic incidents can keep PTSD sufferers trapped in their memories for hours at a time, unable to function. That said, many report that the fast-acting, potent dose gained when dabbing is able to jolt them back into the present moment, shifting them out of their frightening memories and allowing them to function again.\n\nMeanwhile, other patients—such as those with severe chronic pain—report that dabbing is the best way to quickly and effectively relieve their painful symptoms. \n\nOther patients say they dab because they want a cleaner medicinal experience than smoking their cannabis. Because concentrates have less plant matter and more cannabinoids, patients can get the dose they need without as much smoke or vapor reaching their throat and lungs. If you need a higher level of potency, and you have to choose between smoking a joint and taking a single dab, keep in mind the joint requires inhaling a lot more smoke. Dabbing is an option that’s quicker and more efficient in terms of getting a higher dose without having to inhale as much of the non-medicinal elements of the plant. \n\n### How to Dab Marijuana Concentrates\n\nIf you’re interested in dabbing, there are a few [rules of thumb you can follow to ensure that you’re dabbing safely](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-to-dab-safely):\n\n* First, avoid cheap, low-quality dabbing nails. Many anti-drug campaigns and mainstream medical experts say that it can, adding that warning to the long list of reasons why cannabis is a dangerous drug capable of destroying lives. But marijuana consumers and advocates say that those claims are either overblown or downright false. Who’s right? \n\nThe cannabis plant contains more than 400 individual compounds. Most of these haven’t been separately studied, but so far [none have been shown to be intrinsically carcinogenic](http://scienceblog.cancerresearchuk.org/2012/07/25/cannabis-cannabinoids-and-cancer-the-evidence-so-far/). However, the best-known cannabis compounds, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), appear to have both anti-carcinogenic and tumor-promoting properties. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nNumerous studies on the health benefits of cannabis reveal that CBD can have an inhibiting effect on cancer cells, particularly in the lungs, breast, prostate and brain, while high doses of THC can trigger cancerous cell changes in some tissues. But the controversy over whether cannabis can cause cancer really relates not to the plant in its natural state, but to the ways people consume it: by smoking, eating or inhaling its vapors.\n\n### Is Smoking Marijuana Riskier Than Smoking Tobacco?\n\nThough edibles and other ways of using cannabis are grabbing ever bigger shares of the growing medical cannabis market, many people still consume it the old-fashioned way: by smoking. For that reason, much of the research and discussion around the issue of cannabis and cancer risk are concerned with smoking the plant, and how that compares to smoking cigarettes containing nicotine and tar. Recent research suggests that aside from the fact that both can be lit, burned and inhaled, marijuana and tobacco really aren’t equivalent.\n\nWhen materials of any kind are burned, combustion causes the release of toxins that can be inhaled along with the smoke. Some of these, such as benzene, are carcinogens that can damage various organs, especially the lungs. That’s true for both tobacco cigarettes and for cannabis joints, so simply [smoking cannabis can expose someone to the carcinogens that come with combustion](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56cba036cecb1b0008000088/marijuana-and-your-lungs-should-you-be-worried), just like smoking cigarettes would do. The question is: How much is that exposure?\n\n### Can We Trust the Studies?\n\nA few years ago, the British Lung Foundation claimed that [smoking marijuana is up to 20 times more likely to cause lung cancer than tobacco](https://www.drugfoundation.org.nz/matters-of-substance/august-2012/cannabis-20-times-more-carcinogenic-than-tobacco/). The DEA, in a piece warning of the harmful effects of marijuana, also reported that [when burned, cannabis releases up to 70% more carcinogenic gases than tobacco](https://www.dea.gov/pubs/pressrel/pr042605.html?_ga=2.57028714.1178403058.1508089606-1310698703.1507934028), and that the risk of exposure to these toxins is greater when smoking marijuana because smokers typically inhale more deeply and hold the smoke in their lungs longer. \n\nBut a number of studies, including one recently published in the _Harm Reduction Journal_, \npoint out that [statistics like these are misleading at best](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1277837/). Cannabis and nicotine behave differently in the body, so the cancer risk from exposure to equivalent levels of carcinogens rises in the presence of nicotine, but falls in the presence of cannabinoids.\n\n### How Our Bodies React to Nicotine & Cannabis\n\nThe human body has many natural receptors for nicotine. These receptors can have some protective functions such as preventing damage to brain cells from beta amyloid plaque that causes Alzheimer’s disease. But many nicotine receptors exist in the epithelial cells that line the respiratory system, and that makes these cells especially vulnerable to damage from toxins created by burning tobacco.\n\nThe body also has an extensive network of naturally occurring cannabinoid receptors, which are found in many organs and tissues—but not in the respiratory epithelial cells. This, researchers say, probably explains why tobacco smoke can be demonstrably linked to cancers, but not cannabis. What’s more, cannabinoids can support processes that lead to the death of cancer cells. \n\nSo yes, there’s an overall risk that comes from inhaling hot gases and particulates, but smoking cannabis may present less of a cancer risk than smoking tobacco, while getting the many health benefits of cannabinoids. \n\nRELATED: [IS MARIJUANA RIGHT FOR YOU?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/is-marijuana-right-for-you)\n\n\n### Is Vaping Safer Than Smoking Marijuana?\n\nVaping has been hailed as a safer way to “smoke” without the toxins that come from burning cannabis, and in general it can be—but that depends on the method of delivery. Some cannabis oils contain ingredients that also can release toxins and irritate the respiratory system when inhaled, and vaping at very high temperatures can also cause the release of harmful toxins.\n\n### What About Edibles?\n\nThe legalization of marijuana in many U.S. states and around the world has opened the door to [new ways of consuming cannabis that don’t involve smoking](https://www.livescience.com/24714-marijuana-edibles-colorado-washington.html), from artful edibles blended with chocolate and raspberry to candy bars, sodas and teas. But the cannabis plant itself contains no documented carcinogens, so the risk of cancer from eating cannabis is negligible, although other ingredients added to edibles could carry their own cancer risks.\n\n### Dabbing: Unsafe at High Temperatures\n\nAnother new way to consume cannabis is dabbing—heating highly concentrated pieces or dabs of extracted cannabis oil on a “nail,” a metal or glass compartment capable of reaching very high temperatures, and inhaling the vapors. Of all the ways people consume cannabis, dabbing can pose the [highest risk of exposure to carcinogens](https://www.forbes.com/sites/janetwburns/2017/09/27/dabbing-cannabis-oil-may-expose-you-to-cancer-causing-toxins/#10ea91606651) if not done with caution.\n\nThe form of cannabis typically used in dabbing is butane hash oil, or BHO, a potent cannabis concentrate created by extracting cannabis oil using the highly flammable (and toxic) N-Butane. When placed on the nail of a dab rig and heated, the oil releases a potent vapor high in THC. Temperatures on a nail can exceed 900 F—and it’s that intense heat that exposes consumers \nto [high concentrations of chemicals](http://www.oregonlive.com/marijuana/index.ssf/2017/09/butane_hash_oil_releases_carci.html) that include the known carcinogens benzene and methacrylein.\n\nHeating dabs at lower temperatures (at or below 700F, say consumers) lowers risk considerably, but many dabbing rigs don’t have the temperature controls that make it possible to monitor heating levels. \n\nCannabis is a plant rich in compounds with the potential to affect processes in the human body, including the development of cancer, and scientists are still working to understand how those compounds limit or promote the growth of cancer cells. For now, the known risks of cancer from cannabis relate more to how it’s consumed than to the plant itself—and consumers can take steps to reduce those risks.\n\nPhoto credit: [Itay Kabalo](https://unsplash.com/@itaykabalo)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Marijuana flowers are highly varied and versatile. You can choose from a wide medley of strains and use the flower in so many different ways.\n\nAnd yet cannabis concentrates may boast even more variety, since many kinds of concentrates can be made from any given flower. In this article, we’ll go over how concentrates are made, how to use them and why some patients prefer concentrates when treating their conditions or symptoms. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Types of Cannabis Concentrates\n\nCannabis flowers are rich with cannabinoids and terpenes, which give the plant its medicinal effects. When these flowers are processed to extract their essential oils, their active ingredients become much more concentrated. The result—you guessed it—is a cannabis concentrate. There are so many different types of concentrates available. Walking into a dispensary, you’ll likely see a collection of concentrates that includes many colors, textures, consistencies and presentations. You may also see a number of names used to describe these concentrates, such as: \n\n* extract\n* oil\n* wax\n* dabs\n* shatter\n* rosin\n* hash\n* kief\n* honey\n\nThis variety is partly due to differences in the flowers used for each product, but is primarily based on how the concentrates were made. \n\n\n\n### Cannabis Extractions Using Chemical Solvents\n\nConcentrates are made in a variety of ways. In recent years, chemical extractions have grown in popularity, so much so that these days most concentrates are made using some kind of chemical solvent. BHO, or butane hash oil, is one of the most popular concentrated cannabis extracts; it’s made by using butane, but you can also find products made with chemicals like:\n\n* propane\n* isopropyl alcohol\n* ethanol\n* hydrocarbons\n* carbon dioxide\n\nThese chemical solvents produce concentrates in a variety of colors—from clear to amber—and textures—from liquidy or sticky like taffy to hard and brittle or dry and crumbly. \nUnfortunately, many of these solvents have known health risks. While there are processes to remove the chemical solvents from the resulting extract, not all manufacturers have the skill or equipment to fully purge these chemicals. In states where testing regulations are lax or nonexistent, cannabis extracts may still contain harmful residual solvents. \n\n### Non-Chemical Cannabis Extraction Methods\n\nTo avoid the risks posed by the presence of chemical solvents, many patients choose to use extracts that haven’t been processed with chemicals. The most historical methods, involving the production of kief and hash, use natural resources like water and movement to extract cannabinoids from the plant.\nKief has a light powdery consistency and is made by filtering cannabis pollen through a screen. Meanwhile, hash uses water to remove the potent components found in the plant and usually comes out as a darker concentrate with a consistency that can be sticky like taffy or dry with a dirt-like appearance. \n\nRosin, a third method that doesn’t involve the use of chemicals, is a more recent innovation that involves using pressure and heat to squeeze the essential oils from the cannabis plant. Rosin, like extracts processed chemically, can come in many colors and textures—from hard and brittle to a liquidy oil. \n\n### Ways You Can Use Cannabis Concentrates\n\nYou can use concentrates in almost every way that you can consume the cannabis flower. They can be smoked, vaped or turned into infused products like edibles and topicals. Patients often use different tools to smoke or vape concentrates than they would when smoking or vaping flower. \n\nThe easiest way to enjoy a concentrate these days is with a prefilled cartridge. These ready-to-go cartridges fit onto most e-pens or vaping batteries, and are already filled with concentrates. All you have to do is push a button and inhale the vaporized medicine.\n\n[You can find our demo on using e-pens here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3vM64Ga7sc).\n\nOther electronic vaping devices are designed so that you can refill them with any concentrate you have on hand. If you want to smoke your concentrate, you may find the easiest way to do so is by adding it in with flower. You can also roll extracts into a joint or add concentrate to the bowl of a pipe or bong to boost the cannabis’s potency. \n\nMore advanced patients who want a higher dosage of cannabis may find dab rigs a good way to either vape or smoke your concentrate (depending on the temperature you’ve set the dab rig at).\n\n### Why Patients Go With Concentrates vs. Other Forms of Marijuana\n\nPatients choose concentrates for a number of reasons. Some folks favor e-pens for their ease of use and convenience. Using a pre-filled vape cartridge is one of the simplest ways to medicate. It makes medicating a quick and discreet process, fitting neatly in a pocket or purse. \n\nPatients needing a large and quick-acting dose of cannabis—to get relief from their symptoms or conditions—may lean towards using dab rigs. Concentrates allow patients to take in more cannabinoids, with less of the plant material that comes along with flower. This translates into getting a more potent dose of medicine without having to inhale as much smoke or vapor. \n\nOther patients simply prefer the effects they get with certain types of concentrates. For example, hash can often have more sedative effects than flower, so some might use it before bed to get sleepy. I put hash or an indica rosin on my joints every night before bed. Meanwhile, kief and shatter tend to have more energizing and cerebral properties, so those who prefer that effect gravitate towards those options. \n\nIn our next installment of the Cannabis for Newbies series, we’ll continue our exploration of extracts by explaining the ins and outs of dabbing.\n\nPhoto credit: [Fortune420](https://www.flickr.com/photos/fortune420/)\n\nNeed a medical marijuana recommendation? A dab typically refers to ‘smoking dabs’ which is a dose of concentrated cannabis often inhaled through a dab rig or vaporizer. Many were, and still are, wary of the potent THC doses concentrates deliver. [Several stories covering the explosions](http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-hash-lab-explosion-20161125-story.html) of amateur extractors had many worried about the impact this up and coming method of consumption would have on legalization. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nThree years from dabbing’s mostly negative public exposure and attitudes seem to have progressed, with more and more of the industry accepting concentrated cannabis and cannabis oil extractions both medically and recreationally. Although the general public's perception have matured slightly, that is not to underscore that dabbing, when done improperly, can pose some serious health risks. \n\n[![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/58d06b4661364211a7721ab4/embedded_images/58daf7713bb6a66e3814cbb2/truefarma.jpg)](http://truefarma.com/hello-md/)\n[TRUE FARMA DEAL: 25% off your first purchase for first time customers within California.](http://truefarma.com/hello-md/) \n\n### Avoid These Pitfalls\n\nTo keep yourself out of the danger zone, avoid these simple pitfalls when dabbing with cannabis concentrates:\n\n### #1. Big No-No: Using Low Grade Titanium \n\nWhenever I hear my dabber friends mention a new deal they got on a dabbing nail or dab tool, I immediately become concerned. Generally, most retailers are trying to do their best to get you safe products, but the industry is still immature. \n\nRELATED: [IS DABBING GOOD FOR YOU?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55d4b9616531660006070000/is-dabbing-good-for-you)\n\nAs a result, you still may not know exactly what you are getting when you buy a new titanium nail from your local head\nshop. Ideally, it is a grade 2 titanium nail, although, don’t always expect the closest bargain headshop to be stocking the most premium of elemental metals. You may find grade 5 (the most common grade of titanium) or lower in bulk orders shipped from overseas. Here, you run the risk of exposing yourself to dangerous fumes when heating your titanium, which is definitely something you don’t want to inhale along with your THC. \n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/58d06b4661364211a7721ab4/embedded_images/58d06be36136421624721a90/Screen_Shot_2017-03-20_at_4.40.34_PM.png)\nA HelloMD staff member's picture of their cannabis concentrate.\n \nYou can’t expect every headshop to flash you their titanium papers for each purchase, although you can look for higher grade components than your simple bargain choices. There really is a reason why one nail is $12 and one is $80. You can also avoid this entirely by using quartz and ceramic nails, both of which are perfectly safe.\n\n### #2. Big No-No: Using Stainless Steel\n\nDon’t get me wrong, stainless steel is fine when unheated. However, when you bring it up to high temperatures, that things start to get suspect. Stainless steel has chromium in it, which is released within fumes when the stainless steel is heated. High quality, portable dabbing setups often have titanium coils since the heating elements themselves can get to upwards of 1000F after they [begin to glow]( https://www.hearth.com/talk/attachments/metal-color-temp-chart-png.100306/). For inexperienced users who like to see their titanium turn orange, this can be much, much higher. \n\nUnfortunately, lower grade coils still use other metals, like stainless steel, for their heating elements. This can expose novice users to dangerous chromium fumes, which can result in many health hazards. A quick trip over to the [CDC](https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/csem/csem.asp?csem=10&po=10) conveniently lets us know that chronic inhalation of Cr(VI) compounds increases the risk of lung, nasal, and sinus cancer. Yikes!\n\nYou can avoid this by looking for titanium coils and other solutions, such as ceramic/quartz elements or portable rig setups. Often, high quality components will be obvious to pick out from a lineup from their labeling and appearance. The profound coughing experience and gross metal taste you find from some of these coils is also a big hint to try something new. \n\n### #3. Big No-No: Buying Low Quality Concentrates\n\nThere is a risk even when purchasing an organic concentrate product from the cannabis industry. Most growers are doing their best to only provide consumers with pure products that are free from any harmful outside factors, however, as recently as February, we were reminded that cannabis can [possibly be lethal](http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2017/02/06/medical-marijuana-fungus-death-uc-davis-medical-center/) when not cared for properly. This particular case was caused by untreated fungus growing on a cannabis plant. The consumers were already in a compromised state of health, but it is without a doubt that the contaminated cannabis contributed to one of their premature deaths.\n\nSince dabbing is concentrated cannabis, these factors can be multiplied. Depending on the growing procedures and extraction methods, any leftover pesticides or unwanted particles are concentrated within the oil. Immediately, the risks for consuming contaminants and anything that you would rather not inhale is increased. Look for concentrates with certified testing and stay away from bargain basement extractions. There is often a good reason (read: bad reason) why they are so cheap.\n\n### #4. Big No-No: Being Careless with Your Blowtorch\n\nTorch and nail safety should go without mentioning here. However, due to cannabis consumers’ propensity for altered states of mind, a perfectly safe heating element can turn into a butane fueled fire starter. Torches and nails, without the proper attention, can cause serious bodily harm. From burns to outright property damage, the destruction blowtorches can cause cannot be understated.\n\nThis can be easily remedied with the right approach and a set of rules to keep you safe. Of course, keep your torch flowing into open space and never in the vicinity of flammable objects and the heated nail should always point away from you. Aside from these obvious points, be wary of how you move your torch and glass around after you consume. I personally have several steps I take so the 1000+ degree objects have a safe space before AND after a dab. This can be the difference between some icky water spilling over your carpet, or your home up in flames. \n\n### Takeaway: Be Aware of What Can Hurt You\n\nA common thread in this article is low grade components and bargain materials. I can’t stress enough that low cost products are low cost for a reason. I don’t mean to defame bulk suppliers, most are decent companies, and please don’t feel guilty for bargain shopping. I just want you to use your judgement when you are purchasing materials that are involved with your lungs. Is there a real reason why one is $8 and sort of sad looking, while another is shiny and seems like a team of scientists built it? Is it really worth your respiratory and overall health?\n\nAvoiding the four hazards outlined above will make you a much safer cannabis consumer and keep you healthier overall as you medicate with concentrates. Dabbing is a much more volatile form of cannabis without a doubt. Its health risks have not fully been studied in the long term and a blowtorch is often involved, but with these simples steps you can keep yourself from some serious risks that are completely avoidable with the right knowledge. \n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56201c206430320006bb0000/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Many people assume that dabbing is for recreational use only and for good reason. Its popularity has surged among marijuana enthusiasts over the past few years, and it has become well known for its quick onset and robust effects.\n\nHowever, many medical patients dab due to the intensity of their condition and the need for stronger symptom relief. Dabbing quickly provides a much stronger dose of cannabinoids, and the results for medical patients can be life-changing. Unfortunately, mainstream media has painted a dark picture of dabs, pointing to psychotic episodes and exaggerating possible health dangers.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### When it Comes to Cannabis, What Are Dabs?\n\nDabs are cannabis concentrates, which are also known as wax, honey, BHO, oil, dabs and shatter. They are typically very high in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), often in the range of 60–90%. For medical patients who want quick relief without the psychotropic high, CBD-dominant dabs are also available, although they’re often harder to find.\n\nConcentrates are extracted using butane, CO2 and solventless extracts such as rosin. The extraction process can be dangerous, depending on the method used, and explosions have occurred due to flammable gases and lack of proper ventilation. For this reason, amateur enthusiasts should leave it to the professionals when it comes to extraction.\n\nDabbing marijuana is done by heating a small amount of concentrate over a heat source and inhaling the vapor. New dabbing technologies continue to be developed, and the set-up for dabbing may vary from person to person.\n\nSome people prefer to heat their concentrate on a titanium nail, which is then heated with a torch, placed into a water pipe and smoked. Others prefer purchasing a dab rig, which can be either elaborate pieces of equipment, or extremely portable and efficient. Since there are so many choices available today, it comes down to a matter of personal preference as to which type of dab rig and equipment are used.\n\nRELATED: [WHY DO SOME PATIENTS DAB MARIJUANA?](https://hellomd.com/articles/why-do-some-patients-dab-medical-marijuana)\n\n### What Are the Effects of Dabbing Marijuana?\n\nIf you’re experienced with cannabis, and have a higher tolerance to THC, dabbing may be an excellent way to medicate. If you’re a novice consumer, the effects of a high THC, and possibly even CBD-dominant dab, may be too overwhelming. For those who can tolerate dabbing, the effects are often described as a smoother overall experience with an intensity unrivaled by traditional methods of smoking. Patients often describe a cleaner taste and a high that’s different from other methods of ingestion. For medical patients in chronic pain, with PTSD or who experience extreme nausea, dabbing may provide effective relief immediately. \n\nWhen concentrates are manufactured properly and are “clean” of harmful chemicals, immune-compromised patients inhale a product that may be healthier and better for the lungs than that of traditional flower. It’s important to note that if you begin dabbing consistently, your tolerance will most likely go up, and traditional methods of consumption may no longer provide the same relief or the desired effect. In some cases, when a person dabs too often and then stops, withdrawal symptoms may occur.\n\nDue to the potency of concentrates, it’s also possible to consume too much cannabis. Symptoms of dabbing overconsumption include vomiting, paranoia, immobility, confusion, an accelerated heart rate and even fainting. As with all methods of consumption, go low and slow. With dabbing, the saying “less is more” holds true.\n\nPhoto credit: [Steven Schwartz](https://www.flickr.com/photos/amoosefloats/17548136534/in/photolist-q8oAcn-t7xRQu-dCzfDq-pRCCz2-dpm2WP-dyMt4o-ECFyFr-dGbJsN-daoMBj-dBrRLv-dCzfx3-dpm386-EeVCyY-EK4kPm-CXHbt6-FcCh4t-sJEMCb-Fd7dLa-t1osCN-rfBbhZ-tkoMsf)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post.
