This cactus contains mescaline and other derivatives of [phenethylamine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phenethylamine), yielding hallucinogenic properties. Although many Americans are unfamiliar with San Pedro, this plant has [a long history](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16625512/) as an essential element of spiritual ceremonies for thousands of years. \n\nUsed by several pre-Columbine civilizations, the indigenous use of San Pedro for healing and psychedelic purposes remains part of the culture in Andean shamanism to this day. It is now being studied for [potential therapeutic benefits based on its unique effects](https://thethirdwave.co/psychedelics/san-pedro/). \n\n![The san pedro cactus](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_03_11_at_12_22_15_PM_1aab20baf9.png)\n\n### What Are the Effects of San Pedro?\nMuch like other psychedelics, San Pedro creates an intense and powerful psychedelic experience, leading to extravagant visuals, such as whirlpools of colored light, kaleidoscopic patterns, and ghostlike outlines of people. However, many people are surprised how relaxed and in control they feel. \n\nSan Pedro is also [empathogenic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empathogen%E2%80%93entactogen), much like MDMA — meaning it creates a sense of oneness, relatedness, and emotional openness. Although it’s common to experience specific effects, everyone will have a unique experience.\n\n![Psychedelic visuals are common with san pedro](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_03_11_at_12_23_22_PM_05e45e4da7.png)\n\nSome of the most common effects include:\n\n- Strong visual effects, especially at high doses\n- Altered sense of time \n- Altered thinking processes\n- Greater self-awareness and feelings of connection\n- Potential nausea \n- Possible anxiety and paranoia\n\nMany agree it's a beautiful, enjoyable, and even mystical experience — but adverse effects are also possible. For example, when San Pedro first hits, you may feel dizzy, and as you come up, nausea, vomiting, and perspiration are also relatively common. \n\nA bad trip often results among those who ignore the importance of [set and setting](https://hellomd.com/articles/exploring-mind-bending-psychedelics-psilocybin-and-lsd) and those who have a history of mental illness. \n\n### What Are the Therapeutic Benefits of San Pedro?\nSan Pedro’s healing capabilities are primarily anecdotal, but of the claims reported, San Pedro is a potentially powerful therapeutic substance. That said, several studies, reviews, and surveys have been published, including [a 2021 self-reported questionnaire](https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsptsci.1c00018). Four hundred fifty-two anonymous individuals were asked about the mental health benefits attributed to mescaline.\n\n![The san pedro cactus](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_03_11_at_12_24_54_PM_95f39013e0.png)\n\nOf the respondents with a history of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, and substance use disorder, 68-86% reported improvement following their experience with mescaline. Additionally, 30-50% of respondents rated their mescaline experience as the single most or in their top five for spiritually significant experiences of their lives. \n\nThe [University of Melbourne published an article](https://pursuit.unimelb.edu.au/articles/psychedelic-medicine-a-mental-health-game-changer), “Psychedelic Medicine: A Mental Health Game Changer?” \n\nThis piece highlighted the rising number of studies on plant-derived psychotropic compounds for psychiatric disorders, including San Pedro. After conducting an analysis, researchers concluded that medicinal psychedelics have a significant effect on symptoms of depression in the short term and help patients with a mood disorder in the long term. \nAlthough more research is required, the current data and available case studies are compelling. \n\n### Are There Any Risks Associated With San Pedro?\n\nThose who plan to take San Pedro must be prepared for a long trip. The effects of San Pedro can last as long as eight to 12 hours. So, like other psychedelics, preparation is critical. For example, when taking San Pedro, you will experience powerful shifts in your consciousness, resulting in strong emotions. \n\nIf feelings of anxiety creep in, the effects are too long-lasting not to have something available that comforts you — especially if you’re using San Pedro in contexts that may not be safe. Again, this is why set and setting are so imperative. \n\n![The san pedro cactus](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_03_11_at_12_26_03_PM_89ee306651.png)\n\nSince research is limited, not much is known about San Pedro’s potential harm. Although there isn’t a known lethal dose, certain individuals may be at risk of complications, including those with high blood pressure, heart or colon issues, diabetes, or a mental illness. It is also not recommended that you combine San Pedro with MAOIs, including the antidepressants tranylcypromine and phenelzine.\n\n### Is San Pedro Legal?\n\nIn the United States, [mescaline is a Schedule I drug](https://www.dea.gov/sites/default/files/2020-06/Peyote%20and%20Mescaline-2020_0.pdf), defined as having no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. However, only peyote is specifically classified as a controlled substance of the cacti containing mescaline.\n \nProsecutions are rare but do happen — and in some jurisdictions, “entheogenic plants” are being decriminalized. In 2019, Oakland, CA, became the second American city to legalize psilocybin and other entheogenic plants and fungi after people spoke out about how psychedelics helped them overcome addiction, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. The actions taken are paving the way for psychedelic-assisted therapy.\n\nIn other areas of the globe, such as the Netherlands and the UK, the situation is similar. Certain psychedelics are uncontrolled and freely available, whereas others are still prohibited. \nIn the UK, psilocybin is illegal, but San Pedro is not. \n\nThe Netherlands is Europe's most psychedelic-friendly country — psilocybin truffles are legal, whereas drugs like LSD are not. \nIn New Zealand, Germany, and other countries, it is legal to cultivate San Pedro but illegal to use the substance recreationally. \nIn Ukraine, the government excluded San Pedro from the list of illicit drugs.\n\nSan Pedro is legal in the Andean countries, such as Bolivia, Peru, and Ecuador, even as a psychedelic.\n\n![The san pedro cactus](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_03_11_at_12_27_28_PM_ff632375fa.png)\n\n### Where Can I Legally Seek San Pedro Treatment?\n\nEfforts to decriminalize “natural psychedelics” are underway in the United States, with Oakland and Santa Cruz leading. However, **San Pedro is not currently legal on a federal level**. San Pedro ceremonies are legal in Peru, and while retreat centers offer various experiences, not all providers are equal. Personal research is crucial. \n\n### Get Your Medical Document & Purchase Medical Cannabis\nIt’s easy to get your medical document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://hellomd.com/get-started). Everywhere we turn, there's another paradigm-shifting event requiring new levels of emotional resilience. From the COVID pandemic to intense economic pressures and an upcoming political election, it's a delicate balance to manage our emotional and physical wellbeing.\n\nThese back-to-back events can affect the way you are dealing with anxiety and how much rest may be able to get. If chronic pain is an issue, the levels of stress and cortisol in your system may be triggering flare-ups. Fortunately, cannabis is known to treat various symptoms, whether they be physical, emotional, or psychological. \n\nIncorporating marijuana into your lifestyle has several benefits, whether it's THC or CBD. These powerful cannabinoids are often used as an alternative or complementary treatment for various conditions such as [anxiety](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4604171/), insomnia and chronic pain.\n\n![Untitledval99.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval99_677b4c22c0.png)\n\n### THC & CBD\n\n[Tetrahydrocannabinol](https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/neuroscience/tetrahydrocannabinol) (THC) is commonly known for its psychotropic effects which lead to the feeling of being \"high.\" THC is also linked to improved mood, decreased feelings of stress, and significant pain relief for many people. Recent studies, including the one conducted by [HelloMD and UC Berkeley](https://hellomd.com/blogs/articles/hellomd-and-uc-berkeley-release-study-on-cannabis-use-as-a-substitute-for-opioid-and-non-opioid-based-pain-medication), indicate that cannabis with THC offers better pain relief than traditional pharmaceuticals.\n\n[Cannabidiol](https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/cannabidiol-cbd-what-we-know-and-what-we-dont-2018082414476) (CBD) interacts with the [endocannabinoid system](https://hellomd.com/blogs/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system?_pos=1&_sid=412fbfff4&_ss=r) in a similar way to THC, without the intoxicating effects. CBD is best known for its therapeutic qualities for quelling anxiety, as well as providing pain relief. Studies have shown that it may help reduce seizures related to epilepsy, inflammatory bowel disease/irritable bowel syndrome, and depression. CBD can also be helpful when it comes to inflammation, stress, and sleep problems. \n\nThose are just a few of the leading reasons people consume cannabis. Below we dive into how cannabis can help with symptom relief for chronic pain, anxiety, and insomnia.\n\n![Untitledval97.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval97_60116a8aa4.png)\n\n### Anxiety\n\nIn studies, CBD has shown promise in the [treatment of anxiety disorders](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s13311-015-0387-1?handl_url=https://successtms.com/blog/new-treatments-for-depression) such as generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. [CBD activates and enhances specific serotonin receptors](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/7622823/) in the brain leading to reduced feelings of anxiety and stress. For some, CBD may be able to replace or augment traditional pharmaceuticals consumed for acute anxiety.\n\nCBD is also known to [reduce feelings of anxiety following a stressful event](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2697769/), such as public speaking. Other lifestyle practices to consider for anxiety reduction are meditation and breathwork. Regularly practicing mindfulness meditation and breathwork, such as box breathing, have shown to have a positive effect on reducing anxiety and stress levels. \n\nTHC can also be useful for reducing anxiety, but lower doses are more effective at helping with symptoms. High doses of THC for some people may exacerbate existing feelings anxiety and stress. Remarkably, CBD is an antidote to THC-induced anxiety or paranoia. If you happen to overindulge with THC, try ingesting CBD to counteract the negative effects you may feel from being to \"high.\"\n\nWe suggest if you're trying THC for the first time, start at a very low dose of 1-2mg for an edible, or an equally balanced strain of THC to CBD, if vaping or smoking. \n\n![Untitledval98.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval98_072b56c36f.png)\n\n### Chronic Pain\n\nConsuming cannabis is a more natural way to [deal with chronic pain.](https://hellomd.com/blogs/articles/8-natural-ways-to-combat-chronic-pain) Marijuana with THC, CBD, or a combination of both, is consumed commonly by: \n\n- Smoking flower or vaping\n- Orally via gel caps\n- Sublingually via a tincture\n- Applied topically directly to the area of discomfort\n- \nThough the cannabinoids CBD and THC can be used independently, there is evidence suggesting that [CBD may enhance THC's pain-relieving properties](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19896326/). CBD may be most effective when it comes to treating neuropathic pain, which is often related to inflammation. People seek out cannabis to treat symptoms for common ailments such as migraines/headaches, muscle cramping and fibromyalgia. Other conditions that may respond well to the pain-relieving properties within cannabis are arthritis or autoimmune diseases such as Crohn's. \n\nIt's suggested that THC may help modulate pain by indirectly [increasing opioid receptor activation](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4201274/). A recent study found that high-[THC cannabis could offer better pain relief](https://www.analyticalcannabis.com/articles/high-thc-cannabis-offers-better-pain-relief-than-opioids-study-finds-311862) than opioids and could be up to twenty times more effective. Conclusion: this is great news for anyone struggling to find an effective way to cope with chronic pain instead of opiates, which can be highly addictive. \n\n![Untitledval100.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval100_dd0a4c606c.png)\n\n### Insomnia\n\nIf you have problems falling or staying asleep, you understand how an inadequate slumber negatively impacts daily life. In many instances, insomnia is related to poor sleep habits such as irregular sleep times, mood disorders like depression or anxiety, lack of exercise, chronic illness, or even certain medications. \n\nThough CBD is known to help with some of the common causes which could lead to insomnia, it may not always be the best choice. Studies have shown that a potential side effect of too much CBD is that it may create a state of wakefulness. Studies indicate that smaller amounts of THC may actually help restore your body's natural cycle [by inducing sleep](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15118485). For the right person, THC can help you to fall asleep and stay asleep.\n\nIf trying THC for sleep, look for Indica-dominant strains, which will help the body relax. Edibles are a great choice for sleep in that they last anywhere from 4-6 hours.\n\n![Untitledval101.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval101_4e7fb3376c.png)\n\n### What's Best for You\n\nOf course, as with all treatments, it's important to educate yourself on what works best for you. [Understanding dosage](https://hellomd.com/blogs/questions-answers/the-right-dosage-of-cbd?_pos=2&_sid=39ccab7e0&_ss=r), your preferred method of consumption or application, and your specific reason for including THC or CBD in your health and wellness routine is necessary to have the best results. \n\nTaking a slow and steady approach to exploring how cannabis fits into your life will help you tailor your experience. It may also prevent you from wasting time and money on cannabis products that may not be suitable for you. It's true that experimenting with cannabis requires a measure of patience to find the right solution. Stay focused on your goals while trying various options whether it be for chronic pain, anxiety, or a better night's sleep. \n\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.5037593984962405,"src":"/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/ee604/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.png","srcSet":"/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/69585/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.png 200w,\n/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/497c6/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.png 400w,\n/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/ee604/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.png 800w,\n/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/f3583/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.png 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/58556/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/61e93/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.webp 200w,\n/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/1f5c5/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.webp 400w,\n/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/58556/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.webp 800w,\n/static/1a48f01a150ead74135d884aee309bd7/99238/ad40919f0c73af5565d282f351f298bc.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3889-markdown","title":"What is Ayahuasca: Psychedelics 101","slug":"what-is-ayahuasca-psychedelics-101","content":"*\"There are all kinds of ways to challenge ourselves. Today, it's garnering the attention of Westerners from all walks of life - from the Silicon Valley elite to urban psychonauts who are on a quest for deeper self-awareness and personal healing. \n\nThey're venturing near and far to drink ayahuasca in 'ceremony', often traveling to retreat centers in the South American rainforest. Films like [The Reality of Truth](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2056751/) take us on trips deep into Peru to explore how plant medicine may help us access deep states of conscious awareness. \n\n![Ayahuasca is made from a vine in the Amazon](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_02_21_at_2_08_46_PM_4adb853f9e.png)\n\nBut it goes past the desire to expand consciousness. In recent years, people who struggle with severe depression, anxiety, PTSD, chronic pain, addiction, and even bipolar disorder claim that ayahuasca has immense therapeutic benefits. As a result, ayahuasca is now being studied, along with psychedelics, by research centers worldwide for its medicinal potential. \n\nWhat is it about ayahuasca that has such a profound impact on people? Could this plant-based psychedelic be used as a medicine for optimal health?\n\n### What Is Ayahuasca?\n\n![Ayahuasca is a vine that grows in the Amazon](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_02_21_at_2_07_25_PM_2e266429dc.png)\n\n\nThe \"vine of the spirits\" – ayahuasca has been used for therapeutic and spiritual purposes for centuries. The indigenous people of Peru, Guyana, Bolivia, Brazil, Columbia, and Ecuador began using ayahuasca as a sacrament in the 1930s. Today, its properties are studied for its positive impact on [mental health disorders, autoimmune disorders, and addiction](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6343205/). A recent study showed promise on ayahuasca's immediate [antidepressant effect](https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/103531v1) for those suffering from severe depression.\n\nAyahuasca is ingested as a brew or a tea made from the banisteriopsis caapi vine, which contains DMT, and the psychotria viridis leaf, which contains plant-based monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). MAOIs extend the effect of DMT, making ayahuasca a long-lasting and powerful psychedelic. Most often, ayahuasca is made from plants in the Amazon, although people outside of South America also cultivate these psychedelic plants. Interestingly, DMT is a naturally occurring chemical found in small amounts in the human brain. \n\n![Ayahuasca is a brew or tea made from vines and a specific leaf](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_02_21_at_2_08_59_PM_6d97a5ca77.png)\n\n\n### What Are the Effects of Ayahuasca?\nWhen taken in controlled doses, [DMT significantly alters electrical brain activity]( https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/11/191119075305.htm), although the effects associated with DMT are different from other psychedelics, including LSD and psilocybin.\n\n[A study published in 2019](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-019-51974-4) was the first to show how DMT impacts waking brain waves, causing subjects to experience an immersive \"waking-dream\". Those who take DMT, specifically ayahuasca, often report intense hallucinations and emotional experiences, leading to significant breakthroughs. As scientists describe this experience, \"it's like dreaming, but with your eyes open.\"\n\nAyahuasca has been shown to [modulate brain activity]( https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5895707/); impacting key neurotransmitters and gene expression. Ayahuasca may not just treat psychology and emotional well-being, but it may also [support brain health](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/ayahuasca#benefits), protecting brain cells while stimulating new cell growth.\n\n### What Are the Therapeutic Benefits of Ayahuasca?\n\n![The Ayahuasca vine](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_02_21_at_2_12_44_PM_d8b6832f71.png)\n\nThe neurological effects of ayahuasca are both vast and complex. For example, there is evidence that [ayahuasca alters thinking style](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6182612/), impacting areas such as judgment and reactivity. This suggests that consumers may experience greater acceptance of their thoughts and feelings, specifically benefiting those who have persistent negative, unhealthy thoughts – such as those with depression.\n\nAs [stated by Cambridge University Press](https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/psychological-medicine/article/rapid-antidepressant-effects-of-the-psychedelic-ayahuasca-in-treatmentresistant-depression-a-randomized-placebocontrolled-trial/E67A8A4BBE4F5F14DE8552DB9A0CBC97), when individuals suffering from treatment-resistant depression take ayahuasca, they can experience rapid antidepressant effects. Published in Psychological Medicine, this study concluded that when ayahuasca is dosed within an appropriate setting, it holds safe, and therapeutic value for those with depression.\n\nThe same is true for PTSD, as ayahuasca has become a popular alternative among those who have tried traditional treatments, such as medication and therapy, without much success. \n\n\n![People take ayahuasca for a variety of reasons, including to heal past trauma](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_02_21_at_2_10_34_PM_d2799fe91f.png)\n\n\nRegarding addiction, ayahuasca may exert [significant anti-addictive properties]( https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4773875/), based on how it influences dopamine and serotonin levels while interfering with synaptic plasticity, which contributes to learning and memory. Psychological insights also increase, helping individuals process repressed trauma while enhancing their decision-making skills.\n### Are There Any Risks Associated with Ayahuasca?\nTaking ayahuasca can be a very intense experience, and in some cases, individuals may experience psychological stress, higher blood pressure, and elevated heart rate. \n\n![Ayahuasca is most often in the form of a tea or thick brew](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_02_21_at_2_14_22_PM_8d71fe5b5a.png)\n\nWhen consuming ayahuasca, it is common that consumers 'purge', or vomit. It is also known to cause sweating, shaking, crying, and even defecation. Often, purging is looked upon as a cleansing of the body, mind, and spirit. To many, it's seen as a necessary part of the process when consuming this psychedelic. Many shamans consider the purge an essential part of one's journey and spiritual awakening.\n\nFor the most part, when taken in a responsible, controlled environment, ayahuasca is safe. As [stated by York University](https://trauma.blog.yorku.ca/2019/11/ayahuasca-and-its-potential-to-treat-ptsd/), this substance is most dangerous when individuals have a pre-existing illness, such as a heart condition. \n\nIn the few reported cases of death, such existing conditions are believed to play a role and other [ possible drug interactions](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6007657/). Ayahuasca is not intended to be taken with other recreational drugs, antidepressants, nicotine, or caffeine. There has never been a death during a clinical study.\n### Where Can I Legally Seek Treatment with Ayahuasca?\nAyahuasca is currently illegal to consume, sell, possess, import, or distribute in the United States. However, there are judicially granted exceptions for select churches, and in some cases, these legal battles reached the Supreme Court. There are similar exceptions being made in other Western countries, including Canada.\n\nIf you seek a retreat center outside of the United States that offers ayahuasca ceremonies, it is vital to do your homework.\n\n### Get Your Medical Document & Purchase Medical Cannabis\n\nIt's easy to get your medical document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://hellomd.com/get-started). Every day seems to bring new reports about the abundant therapeutic benefits of psilocybin — reports often generated by respected research institutions, such as [Johns Hopkins](https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/psychiatry/research/psychedelics-research.html) and the [Imperial College London](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/psychedelic-research-centre/). It's time to start paying attention to psilocybin and how it may disrupt our mental healthcare system.\n\n### What is Psilocybin?\n\n![Untitled45-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled45_min_f93a11a214.png)\n\nPsilocybin, also known as [magic mushrooms](https://www.drugs.com/illicit/psilocybin.html), is a chemical compound found within certain mushrooms. It is also one of the most well-known plant-based psychedelic drugs. When psilocybin is consumed, it turns into psilocin, which has psychoactive properties which result in a psychedelic experience for the consumer. \n\nMore than 180 mushrooms contain this compound, with [psilocybe cubensis](https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psilocybe_cubensis) being probably the most well-known. In fresh or dried form, the mushrooms are usually mixed into food or brewed into tea, although some research labs process the mushrooms to precisely measure the psilocybin dosage.\n\n### What are the Effects of Psilocybin?\n\n![Psilocybin can cause hallucinations](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_02_14_at_1_36_40_PM_ba92eae610.png)\n\nThe word \"psychedelic\" is commonly associated with changes in perception and an altered state of consciousness. Consumers report generally enhanced sensory experiences, including visual halos and geometric patterns, time dilation, and a physical sense of relaxation. \n\n[Synesthesia](https://www.webmd.com/brain/what-is-synesthesia#:~:text=Synesthesia%20is%20when%20you%20hear,street%22%20and%20taste%20citrus%20fruit.) is also commonly reported. This experience is a blending of sense experiences so that music may appear visual or physical sensations are felt as sounds. \n\nMost importantly, however, psilocybin generates powerful emotional and psychological experiences. These tend to be strongly positive, often described as euphoria, wonder, or delight, and most people also describe feeling a new sense of [connection with the universe, or even God](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6478303/).\n\n### What are the Therapeutic Benefits of Psilocybin?\n\n![Medical labs are studying the effects of psilocybin on mental health and more](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_02_14_at_1_33_42_PM_fbe99427b8.png)\n\nThe emotionally uplifting experience brought about by psilocybin has many applications for mental and physical health. It has also been demonstrated to effectively treat [depression](https://psychedelicstoday.com/2019/11/13/psilocybin-depression/), [PTSD](https://med.nyu.edu/departments-institutes/population-health/divisions-sections-centers/medical-ethics/education/high-school-bioethics-project/learning-scenarios/ptsd-treatment-psychedelics), [anxiety](https://thethirdwave.co/psychedelics/shrooms/), [headaches](https://maps.org/news/media/5967-new-york-magazine-psychedelic-mushrooms-cured-my-cluster-headaches), and [spiritual alienation](https://maps.org/news/media/2619-hopkins-researchers-study-therapeutic-use-of-psilocybin-in-magic-mushr). \n\n![Psilocybin is being used to treat depression and PTSD ](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_02_14_at_1_34_08_PM_56451fbfc8.png)\n\nIn September 2019, [Johns Hopkins University](https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/psychiatry/research/psychedelics-research.html#:~:text=In%20a%20small%20study%20of,and%20half%20of%20study%20participants) announced the launch of its Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research. It is pursuing psilocybin-based treatments for depression, addiction, PTSD, Alzheimers, and chronic Lyme Disease. In late January 2020, [Dr. Stephen Ross](https://nyulangone.org/doctors/1083825590/stephen-ross), associate professor of psychiatry in the [Department of Psychiatry at NYU Langone Health](https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/28/health/magic-mushrooms-psilocybin-cancer-patients-study-wellness/index.html), reported findings that \"strongly suggest that psilocybin therapy is a promising means of improving the emotional, psychological, and spiritual well-being of patients with life-threatening cancer.\"\n\n![Psilocybin has many positive effects and some people feel more connected to themselves and the universe](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_02_14_at_1_40_03_PM_b462733990.png)\n\n### Are there any Risks Associated with Psilocybin?\n\nWhile medical science has not identified any long-term adverse effects, some people experience nausea, confusion, fear, or other negative emotions while under the influence of psilocybin. \n\nHowever, these negative experiences are often eased or go away when there is clinical assistance, or a psychedelic guide present, to help the consumer through their psychedelic journey. According to the [University of Maryland Center for Substance Abuse Research](https://cesar.umd.edu/), there is no evidence that psilocybin is physically or psychologically addictive.\n\n![Psilocybin is not yet legal in the States but is decriminalized in some counties](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_02_14_at_1_41_10_PM_3c18f9c817.png)\n\n### Is Psilocybin Legal?\nYes and no; Like marijuana, psilocybin is illegal at the federal level in the U.S., classified as a [Schedule 1 substance under the Controlled Substances Act](https://www.dea.gov/drug-information/drug-scheduling#:~:text=Schedule%20I%20drugs%2C%20substances%2C%20or,)%2C%20methaqualone%2C%20and%20peyote.). \nHowever, some local jurisdictions are passing laws for the decriminalization of psilocybin, and research institutions can obtain legal waivers. In 2019, Denver and Oakland decriminalized psychedelic plant-based substances, including psilocybin. \n\n[Legalization measures](https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2019/05/mushroom-law/589192/) are expected to be brought before the legislatures in California and Oregon in 2020. In Brazil, Jamaica, The Netherlands, and Vietnam, psilocybin use is entirely legal.\n\n![Untitled48-min (1).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled48_min_1_b2277d3a13.png)\n\n### Are there any Drug Interactions with Psilocybin?\n\nThe most important safety consideration when taking psychedelic mushrooms is to make sure that whoever harvested the mushrooms is an expert in making the correct identification. Some non-psychedelic types of mushrooms look similar and can be toxic. It is also wise to [avoid mixing psychoactive drugs](https://adf.org.au/drug-facts/psilocybin/) in general. For that reason, you should avoid using psilocybin with other drugs such as ice, speed, or ecstasy. Similarly, you should not use psychedelic mushrooms if you take psychiatric medication.\n\n### Where Can I Legally Seek Psilocybin Treatment?\n\n![Untitled47-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled47_min_3873062f74.png)\n\nCurrently, it is not legal to seek [psilocybin-assisted therapy](https://hellomd.com/articles/the-healing-powers-of-psychedelic-therapy) in the United States, although this may be changing as soon as 2023. Psilocybin is entirely legal in the Netherlands, and retreat centers welcome guests from all over the world. You can also look online to find psychedelic retreat centers, and many are located in Jamaica. \n\n### Get Your Medical Document & Purchase Medical Cannabis\n\nIt's easy to get your medical document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://hellomd.com/get-started). It is a dissociative drug with sedating effects and may cause numbness, memory loss, and unconsciousness while maintaining respiratory reflexes and adequate blood pressure. \n\n![Ketamine can produce hallucinations](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_02_11_at_10_31_47_AM_f008b0a2cb.png)\n\nKetamine has a psychedelic effect and may reduce overall body sensations. It produces an abrupt high that lasts for about one or two hours. The immediate effects of ketamine may include drowsiness, profuse sweating, an irregular heartbeat, confusion, nausea, numbness, and slurred speech. It may also create an overwhelming feeling of relaxation, and consumers may feel \"out of their bodies\" or a dream-like detachment. Ketamine can alter a person's sense of space and time and cause visual or auditory hallucinations. \n\nContinued ketamine use causes a slow heartbeat, elevated blood pressure, behavioral changes, and difficulty breathing. Heavy ketamine use results in urinary tract problems as it may thicken the bladder wall, causing pain during urination. Prolonged use may also cause agitation, panic attacks, and reduction of long-term and short-term memory.\n\n![Too much ketamine can cause disassociation from the body](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_02_11_at_10_33_09_AM_5b8ce660a3.png)\n\nToo much ketamine may cause immobility and a sense of going into \"k-hole,\" an intense feeling of separating from one's body. Withdrawal from prolonged ketamine abuse comes with numerous side effects such as depression, anxiety, lack of appetite, insomnia, and restlessness. It is possible to become addicted to ketamine, and with abuse, more may be needed to feel its effects.\n\nWhen used correctly, ketamine has numerous therapeutic benefits, including the following:\n\n### Treatment of Depression with Ketamine\n\nThe FDA recently approved ketamine for \"off-label\" consumption, and [clinics across the United States are using it to treat depression](https://hellomd.com/articles/ketamine-an-effective-treatment-for-depression). Recent studies indicate that up to 70% of patients treated with treatment-resistant depression improved when given an oral antidepressant with intranasal esketamine, a nasal spray derived from ketamine. \n\nIt's believed that [ketamine works for](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/302663) depression as it enhances the transmission of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and triggers glutamate production. In turn, this prompts the brain to create new neural connections. As new bonds form, patients can approach life with more positive associations and behaviors. Ketamine works quickly in treating depression and anxiety, whereas traditional antidepressants may take weeks to take effect, if at all. \n\n![Ketamine can ease depression](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_02_11_at_10_34_31_AM_4ac07b34a3.png)\n\nKetamine infusions for depression usually take effect within four to seventy-two hours, and patients may feel a lasting impact for 1-3 weeks. Anecdotal reports also indicate ketamine may be a potential treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other neuropsychiatric disorders.\n\n### Chronic Pain Relief with Ketamine\nKetamine is frequently an effective treatment for chronic pain, neuropathic pain, and fibromyalgia. Low-dose ketamine infusions have had a beneficial effect on the central nervous system, effectively rebooting neurotransmitters within the brain. Patients may feel immediate and sustained relief from pain through a series of low-dose ketamine infusions. \n\n![Pain can be crippling](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_02_02_at_3_21_48_PM_0f3241603f.png)\n\nWhile surgical operations tend to be very painful, ketamine relieves acute pain significantly. When your nerves send those pain signals to the brain, ketamine cuts them off. You won't feel the excruciating pain after some surgical blades have cut through your body organs. Vietnam War soldiers used these psychedelics to relieve pain from injuries.\n\n### What are the Risks Associated With Ketamine?\nConsumption of ketamine within a clinical setting is considered relatively safe. Some patients may feel uncomfortable with the associated effects, such as feeling disassociated from the body or a sense of \"couch-lock.\"\n\nKetamine may cause an increase in blood pressure. People who have the following are not candidates for ketamine treatment:\n- glaucoma\n- brain lesions or tumors\n- brain swelling\n \nThere are several other conditions where ketamine treatments should be used with caution.\n\n### Is Ketamine Legal?\n\nThe [FDA has approved nasal-spray esketamine](https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-approves-new-nasal-spray-medication-treatment-resistant-depression-available-only-certified) for the treatment of depression. It's legal in specific states but each state has individual regulations on the administration of ketamine. Utah and Texas, for example, have legalized medicinal use of the drug, whereas other states such as California, Delaware, and Wyoming, among others, have placed ketamine as a Schedule III. \n\n### Ketamine Drug Interactions\nKetamine has seven significant [drug interactions](https://www.drugs.com/drug-interactions/ketamine.html) and two hundred and fifty-six moderate drug interactions. It is essential to check with a physician to determine how ketamine may interact with any medications currently in use.\n\n![Ketamine treatment within a clinic](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_02_11_at_10_36_46_AM_c4fda4a3fb.png)\n\n### Where Can I Legally Seek Ketamine Treatment?\nMore than 150 clinics in the US offer various forms of ketamine treatment. With the legalization of ketamine spray and infusions, new clinics continue to open. While it might not be easy to find a ketamine cline, there are many established providers in legalized states. When looking for a ketamine clinic, conduct due diligence, and check with your local healthcare provider.\n\n### Need Your Medical Marijuana Card?\n\n[HelloMD](https://hellomd.com/get-started/) can help you with online virtual medical consultation and get your medical card fast, easy and private.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.5037593984962405,"src":"/static/aa3f3edf5b95943ce60421cc579a24fd/ee604/ff45aa59c9cb8cdfae67ab0a5e89e8de.png","srcSet":"/static/aa3f3edf5b95943ce60421cc579a24fd/69585/ff45aa59c9cb8cdfae67ab0a5e89e8de.png 200w,\n/static/aa3f3edf5b95943ce60421cc579a24fd/497c6/ff45aa59c9cb8cdfae67ab0a5e89e8de.png 400w,\n/static/aa3f3edf5b95943ce60421cc579a24fd/ee604/ff45aa59c9cb8cdfae67ab0a5e89e8de.png 800w,\n/static/aa3f3edf5b95943ce60421cc579a24fd/f3583/ff45aa59c9cb8cdfae67ab0a5e89e8de.png 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/aa3f3edf5b95943ce60421cc579a24fd/58556/ff45aa59c9cb8cdfae67ab0a5e89e8de.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/aa3f3edf5b95943ce60421cc579a24fd/61e93/ff45aa59c9cb8cdfae67ab0a5e89e8de.webp 200w,\n/static/aa3f3edf5b95943ce60421cc579a24fd/1f5c5/ff45aa59c9cb8cdfae67ab0a5e89e8de.webp 400w,\n/static/aa3f3edf5b95943ce60421cc579a24fd/58556/ff45aa59c9cb8cdfae67ab0a5e89e8de.webp 800w,\n/static/aa3f3edf5b95943ce60421cc579a24fd/99238/ff45aa59c9cb8cdfae67ab0a5e89e8de.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3085-markdown","title":"Is Combining Cannabis & SSRIs Safe?","slug":"is-combining-cannabis-and-ssris-safe","content":"In 2017, the National Institutes of Mental Health reported that a staggering 17.3 million adults, or [7.1% of *all* American adults had at least one major depressive episode in that year](https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/statistics/major-depression.shtml). Of that number, 65% of those folks received support from a health professional, medication, or both. Surprisingly, a whopping 35% had no treatment whatsoever.\n\nBecause of the difficulty in accessing mental health care, stigmas about disclosing mental illness, and the high cost of treatment and medication, it’s not surprising that some people turn to [cannabis to help manage their depression](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/how-cbd-can-relieve-symptoms-of-depression). \n\nMany often take marijuana alongside antidepressant medications. But is this safe? Let’s examine the information currently available so that you can make safe, informed choices.\n\n![Hello3-min (10).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello3_min_10_cb9eb2245a.png)\n\n### What Are SSRIs & How do They Work? \n\nSelective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) are often prescribed for depression. These medications include: \n\n* Citalopram (Celexa)\n* Escitalopram (Lexapro)\n* Fluoxetine (Prozac)\n* Paroxetine (Paxil, Pexeva)\n* Sertraline (Zoloft)\n* Vilazodone (Viibryd)\n\n[Serotonin is a neurotransmitter](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/kc/serotonin-facts-232248) that carries chemical signals through the brain’s nerve cells. It has many important functions, including:\n\n* Balancing mood\n* Regulating sleep cycles\n* Managing digestion\n* Aiding memory \n* Controlling sexual function\n\nThe brain and the intestines produce serotonin, and it’s found throughout the body. Though scientists don’t yet know what causes depression, it’s widely believed that imbalances of the body’s neurotransmitters, particularly low levels of serotonin, are significant factors. SSRIs work by blocking the body from reabsorbing serotonin, making it more available for neurotransmission.\n \nBut as many people with depression will attest to, SSRIs aren’t a global fix for depression. There’s currently no way to measure the serotonin levels in the brain, and scientists don’t yet know whether SSRIs added to the bloodstream actually increase serotonin levels in the brain. \n\n![Hello5-min (11).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello5_min_11_0f9d38b1e1.png)\n\n### Folks Are Already Experimenting With Marijuana for Depression\n\nBecause of side effects and the sometimes-limited effectiveness of SSRIs, a significant number of people are substituting cannabis for a variety of antidepressant medications. \n\nAccording to a 2017 study of 2,774 individuals who had taken cannabis in the previous 90 days, [12.7% of respondents stated they were consuming cannabis as a substitute for antidepressants](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5422566/). \n\nAn earlier survey of 1,429 respondents reported that [50% of cannabis users stated they were consuming cannabis to address depression](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28861489/). \n\n![Hello1-min (13).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_13_54fd85da01.png)\n\n### The Medical Community Is Split on How Safe It Is to Mix Marijuana & SSRIs\n\nSome doctors feel strongly that [cannabis and antidepressants aren’t a good mix](https://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/a19995609/marijuana-drug-interactions/), primarily because you’re combining two medications that may both have psychoactive effects. Is it your Prozac, your Purple Haze, or a panic attack that’s causing your increased heart rate? At this point, there’s virtually no way to tell.\n\nHowever, other physicians, including **Dr. Richard Kim**, have a different point of view, noting that small amounts of cannabis can be beneficial to those with depression when taken strategically and carefully.\n\nDr. Kim cites two studies that [point to the importance of consuming low doses of cannabis when addressing depression](https://www.hellomd.com/answers/59e8f1a4727ea41548672a4c/is-it-safe-to-take-cbd-or-thc-with-ssri-and-snri). Because heavy cannabis consumers can become less sensitive to dopamine, the pleasure-pain neurotransmitter, too much marijuana use can sometimes lead to increased depressive symptoms. \n\nThe second study points to a research project where researchers gave high doses of [tetrahydrocannabinol (THC](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/thc) to animals, which resulted in reduced serotonin. \n\nThough humans may react differently, both studies point to a simple rule of thumb: When consuming cannabis to augment SSRIs or address symptoms of depression without medication, less is definitely more.\n\n![Hello2-min (14).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello2_min_14_aa30ba1a54.png)\n\n### Can Cannabis & SSRIs Increase the Risk of Serotonin Syndrome? \n\nDr. Kim also notes that [both THC and cannabidiol (CBD) can inhibit the enzymes that are involved with metabolizing SSRIs](https://hellomd.com/questions-and-answers/i-have-take-luvox-an-ssris-i-suffer-from-chronic-pain-and-was-curious-if-hemp-oil-cbd-oil-that-does-not-include-thc-would-interact-with-my-medication-and-have-the-potential-to-cause-serotonin-syndrome/). This could create the possibility of a rise in SSRI serum, which can lead to Serotonin Syndrome, a potentially life-threatening condition when the body has too much serotonin. \n\nFortunately, for those experimenting with CBD, Dr. Kim explains that it would require an extremely high amount of CBD to produce this dangerous condition. \n\nSome patients using SSRIs also have concerns about their long-term effects on the liver. Because cannabis is considered to be neuroprotective, [there’s currently no evidence pointing to any connection between cannabis consumption and liver toxicity](https://hellomd.com/questions-and-answers/i-suffer-from-concussions-is-taking-thc-oil-bad-for-the-liver-if-im-on-ssris/).\n\n![Hello4-min (12).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello4_min_12_aa5e4f893b.png)\n\n### Tips for Combining Cannabis & SSRIs Safely\n\nWhen consuming cannabis as an adjunct treatment for any disorder, it’s imperative to work with your doctor, disclose your cannabis consumption and seek out products that have been regulated and tested, so that you can be confident you’re consuming a safe, clean product. \n\nIf you’re taking antidepressants and wish to incorporate cannabis into an overall wellness program, be sure to start very slowly and document your results. If you’re a cannabis consumer interested in trying antidepressants, talk it over with your doctor and if you have one, your therapist or mental health practitioner.\n\nBecause there has been very little research on the interaction between marijuana and SSRIs, it’s important to know what some of the risks may look like. These risks are low-to-moderate for those taking SSRIs, but increase markedly for patients using other types of antidepressants. \n\nHere are a few tips to help you decide if you should combine SSRIs and cannabis:\n\n* Tell your doctor/counselor about your plans to try SSRIs and marijuana. \n* Don’t try to add cannabis to a new SSRI prescription until you’ve fully adjusted to your medication and are on a stable dosage.\n* Conversely, if you’re already consuming cannabis and adding an SSRI to your wellness program, consider stopping cannabis consumption until you’ve adjusted to your dosage.\n* Closely document your cannabis consumption. Journal the type of product you’re taking, the dosage, and how often you consume it.\n* Start or resume your cannabis regime slowly, even if you’re a seasoned consumer. Try microdosing to ensure a safe, smooth transition. \n* Remember that low doses of cannabis are far less likely to result in negative side effects.\n* Remember that cannabis isn’t a one size fits all product. What works for a friend or relative may not work for you, and that’s perfectly OK.\n\nAnd always remember to reach out to friends, family, or your mental health professional if you feel that your depressive symptoms are getting the best of you.\n\n### Get Your Medical Document & Purchase Medical Cannabis\n\nIt's easy to get your medical document with the online Telehealth service HelloMD(https://www.hellomd.com/get-started/). When you feel the euphoria from getting high, you may ponder deep existential questions or laugh louder than usual during your favorite Netflix show. THC may energize you, depending on the strain, and you end up cleaning your house until it shines like a new penny. Or, maybe it makes you more creative, and you spend hours painting your next masterpiece. The bottom line is, you feel good.\n\nYou might wonder how weed works its magic allowing you to feel peaceful, sublime, and even happy. The thing is, we've wondered the same thing. Below we unravel the weed mystery and give you a scientific download.\n\n### From Mouth to Mind: The Fast Track to Feeling Good\n\nWe used to believe that the feel-good high associated with marijuana was caused by a flood of dopamine released by the ingestion of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Researchers and scientists are now more inclined to credit the interaction with the endocannabinoid system (ECS). \n\nWe now know that THC may actually work on the same receptors as our bodies' naturally occurring, pleasure-inducing endocannabinoid, anandamide. It's this interaction that is one of the reasons we may feel happy after ingesting cannabis.\n\nBut let's take a step back. First, when it comes to weed and feeling good, not only does it depend on what you take (a strain high in THC, for example) but how. If you smoke or inhale cannabis, it goes from your lungs to the bloodstream very quickly. \n\nWithin 20 minutes, your circulatory system delivers THC molecules to every tissue in the body, including the brain, where it can alter neural chemistry. (While marijuana has many cannabinoids, THC is the one most associated with psychoactive effects).\n\nOn the other hand, edibles take a more leisurely trip through the liver, where enzymes turn THC into a different compound that takes longer to exert its mind-bending effects. Edibles may take longer to work, but their effects may also last longer than smoking or vaping. One study reveals that oral ingestion of THC requires 30 to 90 minutes for effects to begin and reach their peak after two to three hours.\n\n![shutterstock_410648107-min.jpg](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/shutterstock_410648107_min_d9f1de360a.jpg)\n\nWeed can make watching your favorite Netflix show an absolute blast.\n\n### Tapping into the Endocannabinoid System\n\nWhen smoking or vaping, THC molecules pierce the blood-brain barrier and fit snugly into receptors. These typically handle compounds called endocannabinoids, which your body produces itself. These receptors are part of the ECS, whose functions include, among others, stress, food intake, metabolism, pain, and pleasure.\n\nThe ECS controls the release of every neurotransmitter in the brain — these are molecules that the brain cells, or neurons, use to communicate with one another. One neuron sends a message to the next by releasing neurotransmitters, such as [dopamine]( https://www.webmd.com/mental-health/what-is-dopamine) or serotonin, into a gap that separates one neuron from the next called the synapse.\n\nWhen THC enters the brain, the molecules spread into the synapses, where they activate CB1 receptors. It decreases the likelihood that the presynaptic neurons it affects will temporarily stop sending the usual neurotransmitters. In effect, THC comes into the ECS like a mighty wave, flooding it with feel-good signals the postsynaptic neurons didn't send — giving you a high and better outlook on life. We like that!\n\n### Not Everyone Feels Good With Weed\n\nNot everyone's experience ingesting cannabis is the same. While many people have good and pleasurable experiences, others, perhaps because of differences in their ECS, may wind up [feeling anxious, afraid, or panicked](https://www.webmd.com/mental-health/addiction/marijuana-use-and-its-effects#1). In high doses THC can make you paranoid and lose touch with reality.\n\nTHC can also cloud your perception and may give you poor judgment or lower mobility response time. The effects depend on how strong the marijuana was, how you've consumed it, and how much you've used in the past. There's a chance it can:\n\n- Heighten your senses\n- Distort your sense of time\n- Play havoc with your motor skills\n- Lower your inhibitions\n- Increase your depression\n\n### But Cannabis May Help With Depression and Anxiety\n\nThere's evidence to suggest that medical marijuana can help with many conditions, including chronic pain, depression, anxiety, and treating nausea and vomiting related to chemotherapy. Other potential benefits include help with:\n\n- Involuntary movements associated with movement disorders\n- Sleep disorders\n- HIV-related weight loss\n- Spasticity in people with multiple sclerosis\n\nSo the positive emotions and euphoria can help with feelings of anxiety and may help with depression as well, though this is not as well documented by research to date. But some evidence does show that medical marijuana can help stabilize the ECS, bringing back normal function and helping to improve depression.\n\nSome studies show that stress can suppress the brain's production of endocannabinoids, causing depressed behavior. Using cannabis can restore normal levels and functions, improving the symptoms of depression. \n\n### Get Your Medical Marijuana Card\n\nIf you live in a state where medical weed is legal, then you'll need to obtain a medical marijuana card so you can buy products from a legal dispensary.\n\nDepending on where you live, HelloMD can help you talk to a licensed practitioner and [get your medical marijuana card](https://hellomd.com/get-started) in a process that is fast, easy and cost effective.\n\nSometimes the best high you can get is improving your health with the aid of an increasingly proven medical treatment. \n\n\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.5037593984962405,"src":"/static/723d286d0fe04b9ba474c79d24e59ede/14b42/7454eb618f50f8ea48898b9396830f05.jpg","srcSet":"/static/723d286d0fe04b9ba474c79d24e59ede/f836f/7454eb618f50f8ea48898b9396830f05.jpg 200w,\n/static/723d286d0fe04b9ba474c79d24e59ede/2244e/7454eb618f50f8ea48898b9396830f05.jpg 400w,\n/static/723d286d0fe04b9ba474c79d24e59ede/14b42/7454eb618f50f8ea48898b9396830f05.jpg 800w,\n/static/723d286d0fe04b9ba474c79d24e59ede/47498/7454eb618f50f8ea48898b9396830f05.jpg 1200w,\n/static/723d286d0fe04b9ba474c79d24e59ede/0e329/7454eb618f50f8ea48898b9396830f05.jpg 1600w,\n/static/723d286d0fe04b9ba474c79d24e59ede/545e0/7454eb618f50f8ea48898b9396830f05.jpg 7360w","srcWebp":"/static/723d286d0fe04b9ba474c79d24e59ede/58556/7454eb618f50f8ea48898b9396830f05.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/723d286d0fe04b9ba474c79d24e59ede/61e93/7454eb618f50f8ea48898b9396830f05.webp 200w,\n/static/723d286d0fe04b9ba474c79d24e59ede/1f5c5/7454eb618f50f8ea48898b9396830f05.webp 400w,\n/static/723d286d0fe04b9ba474c79d24e59ede/58556/7454eb618f50f8ea48898b9396830f05.webp 800w,\n/static/723d286d0fe04b9ba474c79d24e59ede/99238/7454eb618f50f8ea48898b9396830f05.webp 1200w,\n/static/723d286d0fe04b9ba474c79d24e59ede/7c22d/7454eb618f50f8ea48898b9396830f05.webp 1600w,\n/static/723d286d0fe04b9ba474c79d24e59ede/2565d/7454eb618f50f8ea48898b9396830f05.webp 7360w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3652-markdown","title":"Easing the Symptoms of PMS, Perimenopause and Menopause with Cannabis ","slug":"ease-the-symptoms-of-pms-perimenopause-and-menopause-with-cannabis-and-beyond","content":"\nPremenstrual syndrome, perimenopause, and menopause are all natural parts of women’s reproductive cycles and each come with their own set of discomforts, disruptions, anxieties and challenges. The fact that they’re natural, however, doesn’t mean they need to go unattended. There is powerful help in the form of plant medicine for each of these life stages. All you have to do is find the solution/s that work for you!. \n\n### Premenstrual Syndrome\nThough there is still so much we don’t know about the causes of [premenstrual syndrome (PMS),](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/premenstrual-syndrome/symptoms-causes/syc-20376780) it is generally thought to be caused by hormonal fluctuations, including drops in serotonin levels. Common symptoms and side-effects of PMS can include mood swings, anxiety, sleep disruption, physical pain, depression, bloating, joint pain, heaches and more. There is no “cure” for PMS-- it’s a natural part of life and not an illness. But there is help and hope to be found in the [world of plant medicines](https://hellomd.com/articles/3-popular-questions-about-marijuana-and-womens-health-answered/).\n\n### Cannabis and PMS\nIn a [recent interview,](https://goop.com/wellness/sexual-health/can-cannabis-help-with-pms/) Psychiatrist Dr. Julie Holland, a psychopharmacology specialist and [bestselling author](https://www.amazon.com/Julie-Holland-M-D/e/B002G5S71Q?ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_2&qid=1618599816&sr=8-2) said, “I started asking my patients about their cannabis use and learned many of them were using it for cramps, and some for PMS...Cannabis can potentially help with many symptoms that women who take antidepressants (as well as those who don’t) experience—including irritability, insomnia, depression, and anxiety.” \n\n[Dr. Holland](https://www.naturalmood.com/) goes on to explain that when it comes to PMS, cannabis, which most often contains both CBD and THC, can be a one-stop-shop for many women. ”CBD can help with anxiety and THC can help with mood swings, irritability, and low resilience (your ability to handle stress). Both can help relax the uterine muscle where cramps occur, and alleviate many PMS symptoms.” Many patients seeking pain relief seem to benefit from the use of the whole plant or from products that feature both CBD and THC. But, Dr. Holland is quick to note, “if you don’t like the altered feeling of THC, you can get a lot of PMS relief just using CBD.”\n\nIf you’re ready to try cannabis for relief of your PMS symptoms, but are unsure where to start, Dr. Holland recommends smoking or vaping, as it can bring the quickest relief. If this sounds like a plan, you might find [this list of go-to strains](https://www.shethinx.com/blogs/thinx-womens-health/science-behind-cannabis-pms-helping-period-pain) compiled by Portland-based cannabis shaman, Meryl Montgomery helpful. \n\n “For cramps, I recommend a beta caryophyllene or pinene terpene dominant strain, such as Sour Diesel. CBD (cannabidiol) also acts as a muscle relaxant and is anti-inflammatory. \n\nTo alleviate fatigue, I recommend pinene or limonene dominant strains, such as Super Lemon Haze or Blue Dream.\n\nFor malaise or moodiness, I recommend linalool and limonene heavy strains such as Lavender and Pink Kush.”\n\nThis is what works for Meryl, but keep in mind it may take a few tries to find [which strains work for you.](https://hellomd.com/articles/top-5-marijuana-strains-for-pms-and-menopause/) The common practice around cannabis is to start low and go slow, especially if you opt for edibles over inhaling. Low doses taken over longer periods of time can help you monitor your reactions and avoid the unpleasant experience of adding cannabis-induced annoyances like anxiety, hunger, irritability or horniness to your already PMS-filled day.\n\n### Supplements for PMS\nA [study published in the Journal of Caring Sciences](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25276694/)points to magnesium and b6 supplements as effective ways to calm PMS symptoms. Other studies recommend [calcium supplements as a way to reduce moodiness,](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28217679/) and [vitamin D as an anti-inflammatory supplement that may reduce cramping, aches and bloating](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31624297/).\n\n\n### Entering Perimenopause\nIn their 30s and 40s, when estrogen levels rise and fall less predictably, women may experience perimenopause: the phase leading up to menopause. During this time women may retain some of the symptoms of their PMS, gain new symptoms of PMS or begin to experience symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness and problems sleeping. \n\nAs with PMS symptoms and solutions, each woman will have her own. Cannabis and supplements, however, can be a great place to start.\n\n### Cannabis and Perimenopause\nWhen interviewed, Dr. Holland offers encouraging advice saying “the symptom cluster associated with perimenopause can be relieved with cannabis.” It’s not surprising then, that at the [2020 Virtual Annual Meeting of The North American Menopause Society (NAMS) it was announced that more women than ever are considering the use of cannabis for relief of common menopause symptoms.](https://www.contemporaryobgyn.net/view/cannabis-for-managing-menopause-symptoms)\n\nWomen turn to cannabis in perimenopause for the same [mood-regulating]( https://hellomd.com/articles/8-cannabis-products-to-brighten-your-mood), and anti-inflammatory benefits mentioned earlier, but in this perimenopause cannabis has something additional to offer: phytoestrogens. This plant-based hormone is similar to human estrogen in many ways and can help to make up for the estrogen dip experienced during perimenopause.\n\nHere’s how it works. We all have an endocannabinoid system in our bodies that helps us regulate homeostasis: general physical, mental and emotional stability. This system is made of receptors that respond to the cannabinoids made by our bodies. Estrogen, a hormone found in both women and men, helps break these cannabinoids down so the receptors can use them as efficiently as possible. When estrogen decreases, so does access to these stabilizing cannabinoids. This natural process may be to credit (or blame, depending on how you look at it) for the symptoms that arise during perimenopause. This is where cannabis’ phytoestrogen saves the day with it’s endocannabinoid-activating powers!\n\nIf you’re ready to give cannabis and its hit of phytoestrogens a whirl, you may consider trying cannabis strains containing higher CBD ratios to THC.\n\n### Supplements and Perimenopause\nCompelled by [studies linking phytoestrogens to relieve symptoms of perimenopause,](https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.3109/13697137.2014.966241) but not sure cannabis is for you? Great news! Other supplements and plant medicines are ready to rise to the challenge, but there are a few things you should know.\n\nDon’t be lulled into thinking that “plant medicine” means “safe medicine”. There is some thought, and a growing body of evidence, suggesting that [phytoestrogen supplements may carry with them the same risks of estrogen supplements](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3074428/). For advice, you may want to do some research and consider expert advice.\n\nA safer alternative would be to add foods containing safe doses of phytoestrogens to your diet in slightly larger amounts. Chances are, you’ve been eating phytoestrogen-rich foods like broccoli, carrots, beans, peas, peanuts, oranges, tofu, tempeh, miso and soy milk all of your life! Red clover, green and black teas and coffee are phytoestrogen-rich too and easy to incorporate into your diet. These small changes can have big benefits. Give them a try!\n\n### Entering Menopause\nAfter perimenopause comes [menopause, complete with hot flashes](https://hellomd.com/articles/womens-health-and-marijuana-pms-dysmenorrhea-and-menopause/), mood swings, insomnia, pain, low libido, weight gain, fatigue, osteoporosis and anxiety. Due to a history of shame around aging and menopause there has been a lack of education (among girlfriends, family members and even the medical community!) that can add to this anxiety. While they won’t cure hot flashes, pain or insomnia, [books](https://www.amazon.com/Moody-Bitches-Taking-Missing-Having/dp/0143107909/), [lectures](https://www.ted.com/search?q=menopause) and other forms of education may relieve anxiety and remind you that this phase of life is experienced by every biological woman with the privilege of making it to middle age.\n\nFor the things that education can’t calm, there’s always plant medicine!\n\n### Cannabis for Menopause\nThe use of cannabis helps relieve menopause symptoms in the same ways it helps relieve symptoms of perimenopause. This is for all the reasons explored above, only more so. Hot flashes that were occasional during perimenopause may become a more regular occurrence. Vaginal dryness that was just inconvenient earlier may cause pain during menopause. As symptoms change, it can be beneficial to tweak your cannabis use to suit. Whether it means increasing THC levels to combat hot flashes or trying an indica strain to enhance intimacy, help can be just a toke, gummy or vape away.\n\n### Hot Flashes and Menopause\n During menopause [anandamide,](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41401-018-0075-x#:~:text=Anandamide%20is%20a%20lipid%20mediator,psychoactive%20ingredient%20in%20Cannabis%20sativa.) a temperature-regulating neurotransmitter made by the body, decreases. It is thought that this is one of the reasons women experience [hot flashes during menopause.](https://hellomd.com/articles/can-cannabis-help-with-hot-flashes/) Cannabis doesn’t contain anandamide, but it does contain THC which binds to the same heat-regulating receptors. [Research shows that increasing THC doses can relieve hot flashes by having a cooling effect on the body.](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12052044/). Ann Arbor’s [Bloom City Club](https://www.bloomcityclub.com/about-us/) suggests taking “a few small draws on a cannabis vape pen is a discreet way to manage the onset of hot flashes.” But you should experiment to see what works best for you.\n\nBonus: Anandamide can also increase feelings of happiness or bliss. That may be the sexiest thing to happen to menopause since [Claire Underwood took a moment to cool her hot flash]( https://maryguiden.com/2013/05/12/claire-the-refrigerator-and-the-heat/)by the freezer. \n\n### Hormone Driven Weight Gain \nLike THC and CBD, [THCV](https://www.leafly.com/news/cannabis-101/what-is-thcv-and-what-are-the-benefits-of-this-cannabinoid) is a cannabinoid found in cannabis. It’s superpower when it comes to menopausal weight gain is its ability to suppress appetite. Bloom City Club recommends craft cannabis strains and cartridges like [Durban Poison](https://www.leafly.com/strains/durban-poison), [XJ-13](https://www.leafly.com/search?q=xj-13&searchCategory=strain/) , and [Blue Dream](https://www.leafly.com/strains/blue-dream) as go-to sources of THCV.\n\n### Headaches from Hormones\nHormonal fluctuations can cause intense headaches. Lucky for you, cannabis can bring intense relief. A [recent study published in the Journal of Pain](https://www.jpain.org/article/S1526-5900(19)30848-X/fulltext) found that the severity of headaches was decreased by 50% for women who used cannabis. The study also found that cannabis concentrates appeared to offer more significant relief than whole plant preparations.. There is a [wide range of concentrates on the market today.](https://urbnleaf.com/blog/concentrates-101-a-quick-breakdown-for-710/) Whether you try dabbing a bit of concentrate through a dab rig, e-ri or vaporizer or add a little resin to your bowl, it’s important to remember that concentrates are more powerful than flower. Start low and slow and proceed gently until you find a solution that works for you.\n\n### Vaginal Dryness from Menopause\nTaking cannabis in the usual ways is widely known to support arousal, feelings of love and relaxation. This can go a long way toward easing vaginal dryness and supporting sexual pleasure. Other alternatives include [microdosing cannabis](https://hellomd.com/articles/microdosing-cannabis-for-a-more-blissful-menopause/) with an arousal focused product like [1906 Love Drops or Chocolates](https://1906newhighs.com/products/love/), using a cannabis-infused lubricant like [Foria](https://hellomd.com/articles/foria-on-the-hellomd-set/) or an intimate oil like [Night Moves from Quim](https://itsquim.com/product/night-moves/). If you live outside California or in an area where cannabis is not yet legally sold, try Quim’s CBD-infused [Smooth Operator](https://itsquim.com/shop/) or Happy Clam which is billed as an “eye cream for your vagina.” All three topical products are focused on relaxation, moisturization and lubrication that can make sex more pleasurable for all involved--even those not yet in menopause!\n\n### Menopause and Osteoporosis \nA recent study reveals that [cannabis can help prevent osteoperosis](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12052044/) and is shown to stimulate bone formation and protect against age-related bone loss. What a great way to guard against frailty and injury. It’s certainly more fun than broccoli or milk. \n\n### Supplements to Ease the Transition\nThere are as many supplements and herbal remedies for menopause as there are grains of sand on the beach. Dipping your toes in this market can be daunting at best. Whether you look for a single-ingredient supplement or a multi-ingredient product formulated to address a range of symptoms, you’ll benefit from knowing some of the more tried and true vitamins, herbs and plants to try.\n\nThe [Mayo Clinic’s recommendations](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/hot-flashes/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20352795) include plant estrogens like soy, which may reduce hot flashes and other symptoms, ginseng which may help stabilize mood and [promote healthy sleep patterns](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-cannabis-helped-solve-my-menopause-induced-insomnia/) and vitamin E which can offer some relief from mild hot flashes. St. John’s Wort is a popular herbal remedy shown to even mood swings that may come with menopause. \n\nIf you want to take things to the next level, consider Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy.\n\n### Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)\n[BHRT uses hormones derived from plants to work with the endocannabinoid system to reduce the symptoms of menopause.](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/natural-hormone-replacements#definition) The goal is to replace the naturally decreasing hormones with plant-derived hormones so that the system is supported in working as it did before. These hormones include [estriol: a weaker form of estrogen](https://www.hormone.org/your-health-and-hormones/glands-and-hormones-a-to-z/hormones/estradiol); [progesterone: associated with menstruation cycles and pregnancy](https://www.webmd.com/vitamins/ai/ingredientmono-760/progesterone); [dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA): a hormone that supports production of estrogen and testosterone](https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements-dhea/art-20364199); and [melatonin: which helps regulate the sleep cycle.](https://www.webmd.com/vitamins/ai/ingredientmono-940/melatonin) BHRT medications are available in the form of [(FDA)-approved medications](https://www.health.harvard.edu/womens-health/fda-approved-bioidentical-hormones-for-menopausal-symptoms) or as [custom-compounded BHRT medications,](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28509626/) which can be tailored by your doctor to suit your needs. Both sources offer medications in the form of [pills, creams, gels, sprays, and vaginal inserts.](https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/articles/15660-bioidentical-hormones)\n\nIn recent years BHRT has become quite popular. The [North American Menopause Society (NAMS) reports](https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/articles/15660-bioidentical-hormones) that about 1.4 million women are using BHRT and that 40% of those women are in menopause. That’s a fourfold increase from 2019 when just one in ten Americans were experiencing those symptoms. \n\nAs cases of COVID-19 surged in the US and around the world, [people have struggled](https://www.kff.org/policy-watch/both-remote-and-on-site-workers-are-grappling-with-serious-mental-health-consequences-of-covid-19/) with the new reality of limited social interactions, disrupted work, and the ever-present threat of falling ill.\n\nNow, though, the end of the COVID-19 pandemic is in sight. Vaccines and offer a way to reenter the world after more than a year of isolation, rolling lockdowns, and other restrictions. But nearly half of all Americans in a recent survey said that [they feel uneasy or distressed](https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/health-wellness/2021/03/19/vaccinations-bring-post-pandemic-world-closer-why-we-anxious/4767642001/)\n when they think about returning to in-person interactions as the pandemic winds down.\n\nThis unease is a form of social anxiety – a condition in which social interactions cause anxiety, self-consciousness, and even fear. For people [who already have social anxiety]( https://www.wsj.com/articles/when-the-pandemics-end-means-the-return-of-anxiety-11617299927), the prospect of venturing out into the world again may make their symptoms worse.\n\n But even people who have never experienced those feelings may be worried about their first encounters with other people, family and friends. Research reveals that cannabidiol, better known as CBD, can help to relieve anxiety from a variety of causes – and it just may help to ease the jitters around those first post-pandemic meetups too.\n\n### “Re-Entry Anxiety”: A New Kind of Social Anxiety\n\nSocial anxiety is recognized as a mental health condition even before the COVID-19 pandemic struck in early 2020. It’s a [type of anxiety disorder](https://www.healthline.com/health/anxiety/social-phobia#:~:text=Social%20anxiety%20disorder%2C%20sometimes%20referred,judged%20or%20scrutinized%20by%20) which arises from a person’s interactions with other people. \n\nOne of the most familiar forms of social anxiety is the discomfort many people feel when they’re in front of an audience, such as public speaking. But this kind of anxiety can strike in many other circumstances, too. For some people, social anxiety strikes during events such as parties or celebrations. Others might feel anxious about making and taking phone calls, or meeting someone new. In all these cases, though, anxiety arises from the feeling that people are judging every move you make, and that you’ll do or say something inappropriate that causes them to laugh or reject you.\n\nAs restrictions around the COVID pandemic begin to ease, a new kind of social anxiety is emerging – and it’s just one of the [many pandemic-related mental health conditions](https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/managing-stress-anxiety.html)\nconcerning healthcare professionals.\n\nThis “re-entry anxiety” or “reopening anxiety” can come from lingering worries about getting sick or fears that social and workplace skills have become rusty from lack of use. \n\nThe idea of returning to the world can produce typical anxiety symptoms such as:\n\n- Rapid heartbeat\n- Trembling\n- Sweating\n- “Butterflies” in the stomach or nausea\n- Dizziness\n- Shortness of breath\n- “Brain fog,” trouble focusing or a feeling that your mind has gone blank\n\nMental health experts point out that it’s possible to manage “re-entry anxiety” just like other kinds of anxiety by taking small steps and gradually pushing the limits of your personal comfort zone until social activity becomes less stressful. If anxiety is severe, therapy can help, and so can anxiety medications. But [numerous studies show]( https://www.healthline.com/health/cbd-for-anxiety#what-research-says)\n that CBD can also relieve many kinds of anxiety without the problematic side effects of those medications.\n\n### How Can CBD Help With Re-Entry Anxiety?\n\nCBD is one of the many compounds in the cannabis sativa plant. It’s non-psychoactive, which means that it doesn’t cause the euphoric high that’s usually associated with cannabis. But it can help to balance mood and support the production of brain chemicals that produce feelings of calm and well-being. \n\nThe human body produces cannabinoids, called endocannabinoids, and they trigger responses in a sprawling network of receptors found in organs and tissues throughout the body. This endocannabinoid system, or ECS, responds to these natural cannabinoids in order to maintain homeostasis, or balance, in the body’s many subsystems – and it responds in the same way to cannabinoid compounds produced by outside sources such as cannabis. \n\nSome cannabis compounds, such as the psychoactive THC, can directly activate ECS receptors in the brain. But CBD appears to [act on many different mood-related brain functions](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30515077) in ways that calm anxiety.\n\nAnandamide is a natural cannabinoid chemical that produces feelings of calm and an upbeat mood. Researchers think that anandamide might be the source of the “runner’s high” resulting from intense exercise. But anandamide’s mood-boosting effects are brief because it’s broken down by a chemical called FAAH. CBD inhibits the effects of FAAH so that anandamide, the so-called “bliss chemical” stays available in the brain for a longer time.\n\nCBD also supports the activity of other neurotransmitters that damp down anxiety. Serotonin is a well-known “feel good” chemical that promotes positive feelings and calm, and CBD also activates the brain’s serotonin receptors. In that way, CBD can supplement the brain’s natural production of serotonin and encourage its mood-boosting effects.\n\nGamma-aminobutyric acid, or GABA, is an inhibitory neurotransmitter. It counters the effects of excitatory chemicals such as cortisol and norepinephrine, which cause agitation and anxiety. CBD supports the production and expression of GABA in the brain so that it’s better able to suppress these anxiety-producing chemicals.\n\n### How to Use CBD for Anxiety\n\nYou can get the anxiety-relieving benefits of CBD in various ways, including CBD-infused edibles, tinctures, and oils that can be added to foods. Because the skin contains plenty of ECS receptors, topical CBD products such as salves, lotions, and creams can also be useful. Smoking a cannabis strain bred for high levels of CBD can also help relieve anxiety – but it’s essential to keep in mind that strains containing significant amounts of THC alongside CBD can also trigger anxiety in some people. A few great strains that contain high CBD are: [Harlequin](https://hellomd.com/strains/harlequin), [ACDC](https://hellomd.com/strains/acdc) and [Charlotte's Web](https://hellomd.com/strains/charlotte's-web).\n\nPsychologists say that it’s normal to feel anxious about stepping back into the world once the pandemic is past. “Re-entry anxiety” may not look the same for everyone, but CBD in all its many forms could make it easier to manage in-person encounters once again.\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.492537313432836,"src":"/static/ba3bffc5f2f9b1e802a897001b14658d/ee604/c116e2cb1979eec18914f7898543461e.png","srcSet":"/static/ba3bffc5f2f9b1e802a897001b14658d/69585/c116e2cb1979eec18914f7898543461e.png 200w,\n/static/ba3bffc5f2f9b1e802a897001b14658d/497c6/c116e2cb1979eec18914f7898543461e.png 400w,\n/static/ba3bffc5f2f9b1e802a897001b14658d/ee604/c116e2cb1979eec18914f7898543461e.png 800w,\n/static/ba3bffc5f2f9b1e802a897001b14658d/86756/c116e2cb1979eec18914f7898543461e.png 997w","srcWebp":"/static/ba3bffc5f2f9b1e802a897001b14658d/58556/c116e2cb1979eec18914f7898543461e.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/ba3bffc5f2f9b1e802a897001b14658d/61e93/c116e2cb1979eec18914f7898543461e.webp 200w,\n/static/ba3bffc5f2f9b1e802a897001b14658d/1f5c5/c116e2cb1979eec18914f7898543461e.webp 400w,\n/static/ba3bffc5f2f9b1e802a897001b14658d/58556/c116e2cb1979eec18914f7898543461e.webp 800w,\n/static/ba3bffc5f2f9b1e802a897001b14658d/a2a2c/c116e2cb1979eec18914f7898543461e.webp 997w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3644-markdown","title":"8 Energizing Cannabis Strains to Welcome In the Spring Season","slug":"8-energizing-cannabis-strains-to-welcome-in-the-spring-season","content":"After a year of pandemic worries and long winter, spring has finally sprung. It's a time for clean sweeps, new starts, and the promise of returning to normal life – and cannabis can help. Whether you're planning to clear out your closets, get outside for a long hike, or embark on a new project, we've provided a roundup of eight invigorating cannabis strains for boosting clarity, energy, and productivity. Spring is a time for fresh starts!\n\n### Understandung Strains, THC and Terpenes\n\nMany people associate cannabis with feeling calm, relaxed and an associated pleasant buzz. But there's another side to the cannabis Sativa plant. Some of its many strains can promote feelings of alertness, energy, and mental focus instead of a sleepy \"couch lock.\" \n\nIt really depends on the composition of the cannabis strain you choose. All variants of the cannabis Sativa plant contain more than a hundred compounds. Many of them still haven't been thoroughly researched, but a number of studies have focused on a core group of compounds that occur in relatively large amounts across cannabis strains. \n\nThe best known of these \"primary cannabinoids\" are THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol), the main psychoactive compound within cannabis. Non-psychoactive CBD (cannabidiol), is also well known and is responsible for many of the medical benefits of cannabis including reducing seizures and anxiety.\n\nEach cannabis strain has a [unique combination of compounds and terpenes](https://www.healthline.com/health/sativa-vs-indica#cannabinoids-and-terpenes), and its effects depend on which ones dominate. Cannabis strains are typically classified as \"sativa,\" \"indica,\" or hybrid – a combination of the two. Although research reveals that [there isn't much difference](https://www.insider.com/why-theres-no-difference-between-indica-and-sativa-marijuana-strains-2020-4) between the two on a molecular level, these labels make it easy to talk about the different effects cannabis may have. \n\n Sativa strains tend to boost energy and enhance focus because they typically contain considerable amounts of THC. This can help create an energizing \"head high\" that helps calm stress and encourage creativity and productivity. The effects of THC are moderated in these strains by the presence of CBD. \n\nLow-THC strains are generally associated with calming, relaxing cannabis effects. That's why strains higher in CBD have many therapeutic applications, such as relief for pain or the symptoms of anxiety and depression.\n\nEvery spring brings new hope and new ambitions – and this year, that's more important than ever. The uplifting, invigorating cannabis strains below can give you the boost you need to launch new projects and get things done this spring.\n\nWith that in mind, here's our collection of energizing, mood boosting cannabis strains to put a spring in your step with the seasonal change.\n\n### Super Silver Haze\nThe award-winning [Super Silver Haze](https://hellomd.com/strains/super-silver-haze) is a Sativa strain with a THC content that ranges between 16 and 23 percent and a minimal amount of CBD. This pine-scented flower is known for its energizing and uplifting effects that encourage creativity and productivity during busy days. \n\nThe mood-boosting effects of Super Silver Haze make it a good choice for relieving stress, anxiety, and depression, and it can support focus and concentration in people with ADD or ADHD. Like other Sativa strains with a considerable amount of THC, Super Silver Haze can also be an effective pain reliever.\n\n### Jillybean\nA hybrid strain with a scent reminiscent of pineapple and mango, [Jillybean](https://hellomd.com/strains/jillybean) boosts energy and elevates mood. Jillybean contains around 13 to 18 percent THC, with less than one percent CBD. The relatively low THC content delivers energizing Sativa effects without triggering the anxiety and paranoia that many high THC strains can cause.\n\n Jillybean's uplifting effects on mood make it a good option for relieving stress and the symptoms of anxiety and depression. It's also helpful for balancing mood during PMS or menopause and relieving minor aches and pains from various causes.\n\n### Dirty Girl\n\nWith a flavor suggesting lemons, berries, and pineapple, [Dirty Girl](https://hellomd.com/strains/dirty-girl) is a fragrant Sativa strain with THC content that reaches 24 percent, with minimal CBD. Dirty Girl boosts mood and motivation, making it a useful companion for powering through daily activities.\n\nDirty Girl's uplifting and energizing effects can help relieve anxiety, stress and depression, and the pain and malaise of migraine. Dirty Girl is known to have a cerebral effect, but it can also be helpful for mild pain.\n\n### Chocolope\n\nChocolope is an [award-winning Sativa strain](https://hellomd.com/strains/chocolope) that produces energizing, motivating effects for better focus and productivity. With a complex, sweet taste and a THC content that ranges between 12 and 22 percent, Chocolope also boosts mood and encourages a sense of overall well-being. \n\nChocolope also appeals to medical cannabis patients seeking relief from depression, anxiety, and fatigue. Its focusing qualities can also support concentration and help people with ADD and ADHD to manage daily tasks.\n\n### Super Lemon Haze\n\nThis popular hybrid cannabis strain is high in terpenes that produce a strong citrus taste and scent. With a THC content that can approach 25 percent, [Super Lemon Haze](https://hellomd.com/strains/super-lemon-haze) has invigorating, upbeat effects that support creativity, motivation and activity. The relatively high THC content can also stimulate the appetite – but it can cause anxiety in those new to cannabis or sensitive to THC.\n\nThe mood-boosting and energizing qualities of Super Lemon Haze can help with anxiety, depression, and chronic fatigue. Some say it can relieve pressure in the head and face from sinus problems and migraine.\n\n### Agent Orange\n\nAlthough this citrusy hybrid strain bears the name of an infamous Vietnam War-era toxin, the name actually refers to its intense orange flavor and scent. \n[Agent Orange](https://hellomd.com/strains/agent-orange) creates a euphoric, energetic feeling that can help you power through the tasks of the day. Afterward, you're likely to feel relaxed but not exhausted.\n\n Along with boosting productivity and mood, Agent Orange can also help to relieve stress and ease migraine pain. With 15 percent THC to around one percent CBD, Agent Orange can also alleviate depression, anxiety, and attention deficit disorder symptoms.\n\n\n### Tangerine\n\nAs its name implies, [Tangerine](https://hellomd.com/strains/tangerine)\n has a strong, distinctly citrus fragrance and flavor that makes it a popular addition to edibles. This sativa strain has a THC content of 18 to 22 percent, but it also averages 2 percent CBD. Tangerine has energizing, mood boosting effects that make it ideal for things like spring cleaning or studying into the night, it's well known for it's uplifting effects\n\nTangerine's mood-boosting effects help relieve depression, anxiety, and stress, making it a popular choice during COVID-19. Because it has a higher CBD content than many other energizing cannabis strains, it can also help with health issues such as chronic pain, nausea, and migraine. \n\n### Super Sour Diesel\n\nSuper Sour Diesel traces its parentage to Super Silver Haze, and [this herbal, earthy Sativa hybrid strain](https://hellomd.com/strains/super-sour-diesel) has many of the same buzzy cerebral effects. Super Sour Diesel contains between 18 and 24 percent THC, so it produces euphoric, energetic effects that encourage creativity and productivity. In large amounts, though, it can cause paranoia and anxiety, so it's wise to consume with caution.\n\nSuper Sour Diesel may relieve migraine pain and pressure, and its mood boosting qualities can help treat depression and anxiety. It can also be helpful in treating chronic pain from a variety of causes.\n\n### How to Use Cannabis to Boost Your Energy\n\nInvigorating, uplifting cannabis strains can be consumed in a variety of ways. Smoking is a time-honored way to get the benefits of cannabis quickly, but burning cannabis can create harmful toxins. \n\nVaping also moves cannabis compounds into the bloodstream quickly but without the toxic byproducts of combustion. However, humans don't have that option – and the short days and long cold nights can cause us to feel lethargic and unmotivated. If the wintertime blues are getting you down, we give you seven natural ways to boost your energy levels while waiting for the sunshine to return and warmer weather.\n\n### Why Does Winter Sap Our Energy?\nWintertime [tiredness and overall lack of energy](https://www.stack.com/a/the-scientific-reasons-you-feel-more-tired-during-winter-and-how-to-combat-it#:~:text=Winter%20is%20a%20dark%20time,in%20sleep%20patterns%20and%20mood.%22) can affect anyone, but it's more common in the northern hemisphere, where the shorter days of winter also go along with overcast skies, cold temperatures, and snow. \n\nFor many people, the effects of winter are debilitating and may cause depression and the onset of a condition known as Seasonal Affective Disorder. But even for those who don't suffer from SAD, [winter conditions can trigger changes in our biorhythms and metabolism](https://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-25235/5-reasons-youre-tired-all-the-time-how-to-get-more-energy.html)that affect mood, energy levels, and overall health.\n\nSunlight plays an important role in human biology. It triggers changes in skin cells to produce Vitamin D, and it also affects the activity of the brain's pineal gland. This tiny gland uses the \"feel good\" hormone serotonin to produce melatonin, regulating cycles of sleep and waking. \n\nWhen days are shorter and darker, the pineal gland produces more melatonin, which can cause daytime sleepiness and a feeling of fatigue. Higher melatonin levels also mean less serotonin, which can cause sadness, lack of motivation and anxiety.\n\nSunlight is the body's major vitamin D source, an essential vitamin that plays a key role in bone health, blood pressure, and immune function. Recent research reveals that Vitamin D also supports a positive mood. But the farther north people live, the lower their Vitamin D levels because they don't get enough sun exposure. \n\nLikewise, this crucial nutrient levels can drop significantly in the winter, when there's less daylight, skies are overcast, and people are less likely to get outside.\n\nExercise generates energy and elevates mood, but it can be harder to get moving in harsh winter weather. People tend to be more sedentary during the cold months, which can contribute to low-grade fatigue and lack of enthusiasm. The wintertime blues are a natural response to seasonal changes – and a variety of safe and natural remedies are here to help.\n\n### Drink More Water\nOne of the easiest ways to [get a quick energy boost](https://www.cnet.com/health/7-ways-drinking-more-water-can-make-you-healthier/#:~:text=1.,sluggish%20and%20off%20your%20game.) is to drink more water. Although dehydration is often associated with hot summer temperatures, staying hydrated during the winter is important too. \n\nCold outdoor air can dry out the throat and nasal passages, aas well as the hot dry air from indoor heaters. Drinking more water can boost alertness and energy levels, and help to keep joints and membranes lubricated. Drinking plenty of water can also protect the skin from cracking and help the body resist colds and flu. \n\nTip: Try flavored sparkling waters or add a twist of lemon to your morning glass to keep it interesting.\n\n### Cold Water Therapy\nAlthough winter's cold temperatures may leave you craving warmth, a cold shower – or a quick cold rinse after your hot shower – can boost energy and concentration. The brief shock of a cold (below 70F) water starts the metabolism and releases endorphins, powerful hormones that cause positive, optimistic feelings. [Some research also shows](https://www.healthline.com/health/cold-shower-benefits) that taking a cold shower two or three times a week can also improve symptoms of depression.\n\n\"Cold therapy\" holds promise for positive benefits with both the immune and sympathetic nervous system. The Dutch athlete and cold therapy advocate Wim Hof, also known as the 'Ice Man', has been studied for his endurance and overall immunity. During his cold training he has enabled himself to control his heart rate, breathing, and blood circulation.\n\nA 2014 study injected Wim Hof Method practitioners with an endotoxin meant to attack the immune system. The results indicated an overall control of the sympathetic nervous system and immune response - in other words, the participants did not get sick. A further 2018 study showed that the Wim Hof Method of cold therapy and breathing activated regions in the brain responsible for pain suppression.\n\nTip: Take a regular hot shower and for the last two minutes blast the cold water - you will feel it less and still get the same benefits.\n\n### Consuming Cannabis\n\nCannabis is known for its relaxing and calming properties, but [many strains](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/top-5-marijuana-strains-to-fight-fatigue)\nprovide a much-needed energy boost. Stimulating sativa-dominant cannabis strains can improve concentration, focus, and energy, whether you consume them by smoking, vaping, or as slower-acting edibles. Here are a few to try:\n\n[Jack Herer](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/jack-herer) is a high-energy sativa strain with hefty amounts of THC, the psychotropic ingredient that causes a euphoric high. It's known to stimulate creativity and elevate mood, and it can also help people with anxiety, PTSD, and migraine. \n\n[Harlequin](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/harlequin) is a high-CBD strain, although it contains THC, and it can be useful in treating anxiety. \nHarlequin's effects are relaxing and calming, but this cannabis strain also boosts focus and alertness so that users can feel more energetic without the distracting effects of THC.\n\n[Green Crack](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/green-crack) is a high-energy sativa strain that can contain up to 24 percent THC. It supports creativity and productivity, and it can help relieve stress, fatigue and depression, and other conditions such as ADHD and migraines. \n\nTip: If you're new to cannabis, start with a high CBD strain like Harlequin and start slowly.\n\n\n### Laugh More\n\nLaughter might be the best medicine for winter's down days. Years after author Norman Cousins described using laughter to help him recover from a painful spine condition; researchers are documenting the many effects of laughter for fighting fatigue and boosting immune functioning. [Some studies indicate](https://www.webmd.com/balance/features/give-your-body-boost-with-laughter#1) that laughing can raise the heart rate, feed more oxygen to the brain and tissues, which is similar to the effects of exercise. Natural (not forced) laughter can also contribute to better sleep and raise immune cells' levels in the body. \n\nAccording to [SCL Health](https://www.sclhealth.org/blog/2019/06/the-real-health-benefits-of-smiling-and-laughing/#:~:text=Release%20the%20Endorphins!,the%20serotonin%20is%20an%20antidepressant.), \"When you smile, your brain releases tiny molecules called neuropeptides to help fight off stress. Then other neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins come into play too. The endorphins act as a mild pain reliever, whereas the serotonin is an antidepressant.\" Proactively smiling and laughing in an authentic way can help get you out of your funk!\n\nTo get more laughter into your life, take time to watch a comedy movie or a favorite TV comedy. Or consider listening to one of the many new (and free) [comedy podcasts](https://www.vulture.com/article/best-comedy-podcasts-2020.html) while you're doing daily chores.\n\nTip: Looking for a good comedy? Try Hulu's vampire mockumentary [What We Do In The Shadows](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/What_We_Do_in_the_Shadows_(TV_series)).\n\n### Start the Day With Meditation\n\nA morning meditation practice can help to relieve anxiety and low-level depression and set the tone for a calmer, more centered day. Meditation can be as simple as sitting quietly for a few minutes, observing your breathing and thoughts, but a variety of [apps such as Headspace and Calm](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-meditation-apps/) can provide more support, with guided meditations, intentions, and other information and activities for starting and keeping a daily meditation routine.\n\nTip: Don't pressure yourself. Start meditation for two minutes when you wake up with deep breathing and work up to ten or twenty minutes.\n\n### Take Vitamin D\nVitamin D may be the ultra supplement hero of 2020. Vitamin D is called the \"sunshine vitamin\" for a good reason, and taking a D supplement [can help boost energy and concentration](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/best-supplements-for-energy#TOC_TITLE_HDR_4) during dark winter days. It is also known to lower inflammation levels, and is a suggested vitamin to take during the COVID pandemic.\n\nAim for a quality supplement that supplies about 1,000 to 2,000 mg of Vitamin D3 daily. Consider adding more [Vitamin D rich foods](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/9-foods-high-in-vitamin-d)to your diet, too. Eggs, oily fish such as salmon and mackerel, and mushrooms are among the best sources. Vitamin-D fortified foods such as dairy products, orange juice, and cereals can also boost your intake.\n\nTip: Take thirty minutes during your lunch break on a sunny day and have lunch outside to expose your skin to natural vitamin D: sunlight.\n\n### Add Omega-3 Fatty Acids\n\nSome research suggests that people tend to consume fewer Omega 3 fatty acids in winter, and that can [contribute to the low energy and depressive mood](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-chemistry-calm/201012/fear-not-the-winter-blues). These essential fatty acids have multiple benefits for the heart, eyes, and other organs, but they can also help to fight fatigue and depression. Consider taking a high-quality supplement if your diet doesn't include [plenty of natural sources](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/17-health-benefits-of-omega-3) such as olive or flaxseed oil, fish, and nuts.\n\nTip: Eat foods high in Omega 3 such as salmon, sardines, herring, and oysters. Flax seeds, chia seeds, and walnuts are also good sources. \n\nLike other animals, humans are bound to the cycles of the sun, and it's natural to feel the effects of the short days and cold nights of winter. But a few simple strategies that work with the body's own rhythms can help to beat those wintertime blues.\n\n### Get Your Medical Document & Purchase Medical Cannabis\nIt's easy to get your medical document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://hellomd.ca/get-started). These benefits vary based on the substance. For <u>cannabis</u>, microdosing may help with **chronic pain**, **anxiety**, and **sleep**.
