New studies in epigenetics also explore the factors that can activate tumor suppression genes or keep defective genes, such as the breast cancer-related BRCA1 and BRAC2, in check.\n\n### The Endocannabinoid System May Hold the Key\n\nAlong with just about every other process in the body, the immune system is supported and moderated by the endocannabinoid system, an extensive network of cellular receptors that respond to cannabinoids for things like managing pain, calming anxiety and activating immune responses.  \n\nThe body creates its own cannabinoids, but cannabinoids found in cannabis, such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), are so similar to the body’s own that they can affect any process that the endocannabinoid system manages. So these and potentially other compounds in the marijuana plant may be able to [suppress the development of cancerous tumors](http://scienceblog.cancerresearchuk.org/2012/07/25/cannabis-cannabinoids-and-cancer-the-evidence-so-far/).\n\n### Marijuana Compounds May Control Cancer Cells\n\nSo far, research has identified two endocannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CBD2, that can be activated by THC and CBD to trigger immune responses, cell growth and more. For those reasons, some studies indicate that these compounds may have surprisingly potent powers to act on the various checkpoints and switching mechanisms to cause the death of cancer cells and inhibit the growth and spread of tumors.  \n\nGliomas are a family of stubborn, aggressive brain tumors that can be difficult to treat because they often spread among many areas of brain tissue, rather than concentrate into a single, solid tumor. In over two decades of studies, researchers from around the world found that [THC can induce apoptosis, or cell death, in animals for certain types of glioma cells while protecting normal cells](http://norml.org/library/item/gliomascancer).\n\nIn studies examining the effects of cannabinoids on cancers as diverse as breast cancer and colorectal cancer, THC and CBD have been shown to cause cancer cell death and promote immune responses that inhibit new cancer cell growth. These cannabis compounds operate on EC receptors themselves, and on other processes that are affected by them to reduce cancer cell proliferation and cause the death of existing cancer cells. These studies were conducted on animals and on human cells in a laboratory setting. \n\n### Cancer & Cannabis: A Complex Relationship\n\nAlthough these and other studies indicate that cannabis compounds may play a powerful role in promoting immune responses that could lead to the death of cancer cells and prevent the development of new ones, the relationship of marijuana to cancer is more complex than it appears. According to some studies, [cannabis appears to promote tumor growth](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15026328), not stop it. In others, [high levels of THC may interfere with the development of blood vessels](http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4244489.stm). \n\nEfforts to come to a clear understanding of how cannabis alters cancer also depend on the kind of cannabis being studied and the nature of the study involved. While some studies use natural cannabis, others are based on FDA-sanctioned medications that contain CBD only. And some research is done on cell lines in a laboratory, while other studies are based on animal subjects or, in some cases, human trials. \n\nThese varying approaches make it difficult to determine what cannabis actually does about cancer. Regardless of these variables, though, more than two decades of research indicates that marijuana may exert a powerful influence on various points in the body’s progress toward developing cancer, and new studies are shedding light on the way those influences work. Cannabis is known to ease the symptoms of cancer treatment—but it may also be a potent weapon for stopping cancer in its tracks. Cannabinoids are chemical compounds found in cannabis and occur naturally in our bodies. This is great when our estrogen levels are high throughout our monthly cycle. High levels of estrogen make it easier for the body to process THC efficiently, allowing a smaller amount of cannabis to be more effective. \n\nUnfortunately, our period comes when estrogen levels are at their lowest. The first, and perhaps most obvious, is increasing your cannabis intake when that dreaded week of the month comes around. If you’re not keen on smoking cannabis, try dosing with a tincture or consuming a marijuana edible. Stressed-out folks have long understood this relationship, and now recent studies reveal that the \n[“gut-brain axis”](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4367209/)\n plays a role in a long list of health conditions. As it turns out, cannabis may have an important role to play in keeping those lines of communication working smoothly. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Understanding the Mind-Gut Connection \n\nUntil relatively recently, people who suffer from anxiety, depression and other mental health conditions might have been told that their problem was “all in their head.” But recent research reveals that the [opposite is more likely true](https://www.health.harvard.edu/diseases-and-conditions/the-gut-brain-connection). A complex and comprehensive network of neurotransmitters and hormones shared by both the brain and the digestive tract link these two systems. \n\nHelped along by organisms in the gut biome, this axis of communication is anchored by the [vagus nerve](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24997031). The vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve, running from the brain all the way to the abdomen. Although it actually consists of two branches, it’s usually referred to as one system. \n\nCommunication between the brain and the gut, which includes all parts of the digestive system from mouth to anus, is possible because many of the same neurotransmitters and receptors occur in both places—that’s why emotions generated in the brain can also be felt in the belly. A good example of this is irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, a condition that often has no clear physical cause.\n\nIf the brain speaks to the gut, the opposite is also true. Dysfunction in the digestive system can be communicated to the brain, contributing to conditions such as anxiety and depression. More evidence for this connection comes from recent studies on treating anxiety disorders and depression by targeting the gut with dietary changes, probiotics and other remedies for gastric problems.  \n\nThe gut-brain network also involves the central nervous system, the autonomic nervous system and a little known channel called the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis, or HPA. Because so many systems are engaged in this network, its function (or dysfunction) can affect just about every part of the body. But these systems aren’t the only ones to participate in the “crosstalk” along the gut-brain axis—the endocannabinoid system also plays a key role.\n\n### Marijuana and the Endocannabinoid System\n\nThe bodies of humans and other mammals contain a far-flung network of cannabinoid receptors that occur in many organs, nerves, cells and tissues. The endocannabinoid system, or ECS, has two receptors, CB1 and CB2, which are activated by the body’s own cannabinoids: 2-AG and anandamide. These molecules behave similarly to compounds found in marijuana.\n\nTetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the best known and most abundant of the compounds found in cannabis. It’s the psychoactive ingredient that’s responsible for the euphoric and relaxing “high,” but cannabis also contains over a hundred other substances. The second most prevalent of these is cannabidiol, or CBD, a compound that has no psychoactive qualities, but is able to work both with THC and on its own to affect the body’s immune system and many other functions.\n\nAlthough the endocannabinoid system wasn’t discovered until the early 1990s, numerous studies since then have revealed just how deeply connected it is to the body’s other systems. Moreover, the studies have also discussed the important role cannabis can play in activating the ECS to fight disease and maintain good health. Some research suggests that the [endocannabinoid system may actually be the body’s main regulatory system](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24997031), acting as a sort of “controller” for other systems, including the gut-brain network.\n\nThe endocannabinoid receptor CB1 is found throughout the body, but particularly in the brain and central nervous system. CB2 receptors occur most often in white blood cells, the peripheral nervous system and the gastrointestinal tract. These associations mean that the ECS likely plays a role in regulating many essential functions including pain control, pleasure and reward, immune responses, memory and cognition, and mood.  \n\nSome studies suggest that low levels of natural cannabinoids contribute to diseases like fibromyalgia, migraines and IBS. They also speculate that consuming cannabis can help resolve that deficiency and eliminate symptoms of those disorders.\n\nThe systems that contribute to the gut-brain axis also contain endocannabinoid receptors, and the activity of these receptors can regulate dysfunctions in those other systems. For example, cannabis may ease the symptoms of IBS and reduce the nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy; it can also aid anxiety and depression. It’s followed closely by cannabidiol, or CBD. Separately and together, these two compounds are the cannabis ingredients to be most closely studied for their applications in treating a wide range of health conditions ranging from cancer to PTSD.  \n\nTHC is probably the best known of marijuana’s many compounds. Its psychoactive properties are responsible for the cannabis “high” enjoyed by recreational users—and for keeping marijuana on the DEA’s list of what they consider to be highly addictive and dangerous drugs. \n\n For most users, that high delivers a feeling of relaxation and euphoria. But for others, THC can cause less pleasant reactions—nervousness, anxiety and paranoia. The likelihood of those kinds of negative effects rises when a user consumes cannabis grown from strains that are very high in THC. Some studies also suggest that long term or extensive use of THC can permanently affect brain functions such as memory or cognition.\n\nBut THC isn’t just good for a good time as it also has potent healing properties. The endocannabinoid system is a vast network of natural cannabinoid receptors that occur throughout the body. These receptors can be filled by cannabinoids manufactured by the body itself, or by introducing cannabis from outside sources like smoking or consuming it. \n\nThe body’s CB1 and CB2 receptors are abundant in the brain, organs and tissues, and THC binds with them in ways that are nearly identical to natural endocannabinoids such as anandamide and 2-AG. It wasn’t until 1990 that research revealed the presence of a cannabinoid receptor. And in the years following the cloning of that first receptor, CB1, the understanding of the scope and power of the endocannabinoid receptor system continues to expand.\r\n\r\nNow, clinical studies show that the endocannabinoid system drives a wide range of physical and psychological processes, such as immune responses, mood and memory and the perception of pain. That can explain why CBD in particular appears to have potent anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting effects.\r\n\r\nOne area that's very low in either kind of cannabinoid receptors is the brainstem, home of the autonomous nervous system that regulates breathing, heart rate and other “automatic” functions. For that reason, the risk of sudden death from an overdose of cannabis is virtually nonexistent. But for some, cannabis has the opposite effect, triggering the very feelings of anxiety, nervousness and irritability that it’s supposed to relieve. And the connection is far more ancient than that.  The human body is home to an [extensive network of cannabinoid receptor](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3997295/)\r\n that are primed to respond to chemicals bearing a close resemblance to THC, one of the many active compounds in cannabis.  \r\n\r\nRELATED: [WHY DOES CANNABIS MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/582b86cce686fc000c657034/why-does-cannabis-make-you-feel-good)\r\n\r\nThis system, called [the endocannabinoid receptor system, wasn’t discovered\r\nuntil the early 1990s](http://www.beyondthc.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/eCBSystemLee.pdf)—but research since then has shown that the EC system plays a role in just about every function of the human body. \r\n\r\nEndocannabinoid receptors occur in the central nervous system, the peripheral nervous system and areas of the brain responsible for higher order functions, such as the neocortex, hippocampus, cerebellum and hypothalamus. These receptors are also present in just about every organ, as well as the connective tissues and blood vessels.  \r\n\r\nAlthough research continues to reveal new discoveries about the functions of the endocannabinoid system, it’s clear that this system is involved with immune responses, pain modulation, mood and controlling inflammation. Activation of some parts of the EC system can also stimulate the growth of neural cells and slow the growth of cancer cells.  \r\n\r\nLike other receptor networks in the body, the EC system functions when a cannabinoid receptor is activated by a matching molecule, like a key fitting into a lock. So far, two cannabinoid receptors have been identified, and they respond in different ways. CB1, found mainly in the central nervous system, is responsible for psychoactive responses such as memory, mood and cognition, and CB2, which occurs primarily in the tissues, organs and peripheral nervous system, tends to regulate immune responses.\r\n\r\nThese receptors can be activated by the body’s own cannabinoid-like chemicals—or from consuming cannabis in any of its many forms. But not everyone’s endocannabinoid system is the same. Certain genes control the expression of neurotransmitters in the EC system, and variations in those genes can cause differences in how (and how much) those neurotransmitters are expressed.\r\n\r\n### Anandamide: The “Bliss Molecule”\r\n\r\nAnandamide is one of those neurotransmitters—an endocannabinoid that binds to the same C1 cannabinoid receptors as THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. Anandamide, which gets its name from ananda, the Sanskrit word for bliss, has been called the “bliss molecule” for its key feature of [promoting a state of happiness and contentment](https://www.cannabis.info/en/what-is-anandamide-how-does-it-help-marijuana-users). \r\n\r\nBut anandamide does much more. It also plays an important role in supporting memory, thought and coordination, as well as in suppressing pain and slowing the proliferation of cancer cells. It’s also responsible for that exercise-induced euphoria known as “runner’s high.”\r\n\r\nAnandamide levels are not fixed, and it’s possible to increase them with activities like exercise and intense creative work, which stimulate the release of endorphins, serotonin and dopamine, neurotransmitters that are related to pleasure and reward. Eating chocolate boosts anandamide levels, too, which can explain why so many people turn to chocolate to soothe disappointment and broken hearts. And the highly expensive black truffle contains anandamide all on its own. But because anandamide is so similar to THC, using cannabis is also a way to trigger its calming, mood-boosting properties. For some people, though, other factors interfere with that pleasurable effect.\r\n\r\n### FAAH – Is It the “Feel-Good Gene”?\r\n\r\nAnandamide is a fragile neurotransmitter with a relatively short life. It’s regulated by a gene that produces an enzyme called [fatty acid amide hydrolase, or FAAH](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/gene/2166), which is responsible for breaking it down. In the presence of higher levels of FAAH, more anandamide is broken down, leaving the system vulnerable to feelings of anxiety and depression. When that happens, the brain is more inclined to respond to the calming effects of cannabis.\r\n\r\nBut when less FAAH is available, more anandamide can continue to circulate in the brain. Those levels can fluctuate for a variety of reasons, but some people have a variant of the FAAH gene that allows higher levels of anandamide to circulate in the brain, causing more overall feelings of happiness and less inclination to recall frightening or disturbing events.  \r\n\r\nIn a recent New York Times article, physician Richard Friedman called [FAAH the “feel-good gene.”](https://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/08/opinion/sunday/the-feel-good-gene.html?mcubz=0) According to Friedman, people with this genetic variation tend to feel naturally more upbeat and calm, so that they don’t typically respond to the relaxing effects of THC in cannabis. On the other hand, people with the “normal” FAAH gene—about 80 percent of U.S. adults of European descent—have lower levels of anandamide, so for these people cannabis is more likely to have a pleasurable effect.\r\n\r\nThe existence of a [\"feel-good gene” that keeps anandamide levels high in some people remains controversial](https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/cross-check/n-y-times-hype-of-8220-feel-good-gene-8221-makes-me-feel-bad/). But it may help to explain how the relationship between FAAH levels and anandamide can affect the way a user responds to cannabis.  \r\n\r\nAnandamide levels aren’t the only factor contributing to feelings of anxiety and nervousness when using cannabis. Strains with higher levels of THC can overwhelm the system, too—and some people may feel those anxious symptoms at one time but not at others. Lin expressed the importance of the new course saying, “We feel it is important at this moment to educate students about the physiology and medical indications of cannabis and cannabinoids.” The class will be offered to undergraduate students across UC Davis, fulfilling a general education requirement for science and engineering. \n\nThe course will cover the biology of cannabis and cannabinoids, as well as how they effect different systems in the body. The course will also delve into the potential medical benefits of cannabis and the history of cannabis use as a medication. A more advanced version of the class is being formulated for medical students to be also offered next year. UC Davis is also hoping to expand public knowledge of cannabis through a similar course offered to the general public.\n\n### Other Types of Cannabis Education\n\nThe course is the first of its kind to be offered in the UC system, making it an important step in the expansion of education on the benefits of marijuana. As many people involved in or interested in the marijuana industry know, the current lack of reputable education on the subject of cannabis is major problem. Only a handful of universities in the country offer classes on marijuana. The University of Vermont medical school and the Massachusetts Medical Society both offer limited courses on marijuana, as well as three different law schools in the country, including Harvard. \n\nThe United States does have one cannabis education dedicated campus, which is Oaksterdam University located in Oakland, California. Founded in 2007, Oaksterdam University was founded by Richard Lee as a trade school for people in the cannabis industry. The school was modeled on the Cannabis College in Amsterdam, though it has a far extended curriculum from the horticulture focused school in Europe. Oaksterdam University offers courses in business, culinary arts, history, horticulture, law, and sciences, all based around marijuana. \n\nThere are also a few online training programs for doctors that allow them to get more information on cannabis, including how to properly prescribe it for different conditions. Certain states require doctors to complete various online training programs before being authorized to prescribe medical marijuana.\n\nThe Medical Cannabis Institute is an online resources that provides courses ranging from Clinical Applications of Cannabis for Cancer Patients to Core Knowledge of the Endocannabinoid System. There are also a variety of patient resources, like HelloMD, that provide patients with information to help them understand the way cannabis can be used to aid a variety of medical conditions.\n\n### Doctor Education is Missing\n\nDespite the expanding amount of cannabis-oriented resources for doctors, patients, and curious public alike, there is still a lack of formal educational resources available to the general public. Doctors are possibly the most effected by the lack of educational opportunities, as they do not receive any formal training on cannabis in medical school like other pharmaceuticals they prescribe. Perry Solomon, the Chief Medical Officer at HelloMD, said this of the lack of available education for doctors;\n\n>“One the biggest obstacles in patients obtaining medicinal cannabis in legal states is the inability to find physicians who are familiar with cannabis. There is only one medical school in the country that actually teaches a course on cannabis and only 13% of the others mention it in various details. This, of course, results in an uninformed graduating physician population. \n\n>When a patient then goes to a doctor and wants to discuss cannabis as an alternative to traditional medication, the physician is unable to do so. What I have seen happen occasionally as well is, due to their ignorance and pre-determined bias regarding cannabis, the physician “fires” the patient who has been using cannabis!\n\n>As more and more states legalize medicinal cannabis, I have seen more physicians attending educational events all across the country. It is vital for more physicians to become educated about cannabis since they will be seeing more of their patients using it in the future, including states where “adult use” is permitted. What we have seen most at HelloMD is patients who had used cannabis to help with chronic pain, the number one reason that patients use cannabis. Cannabis, when compared to drugs like amphetamines and cocaine, only produces a moderate amount of dopamine. Anandamide, which is one of the body's natural endocannabinoids, is known to produce joy and happiness. It also plays a role in memory, motivation, pain, appetite and fertility. It's the binding of anandamide with the CB1 receptor that produces the “feel good” effect that is similar to that associated with cannabis usage. \r\n\r\nMeanwhile, a study published in 2014 in the journal *Transitional Medicine* found that [anandamide can even affect the growth of breast cancer cells](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4140423/). The study found that anandamide inhibits pro-angiogenic factors, which provides its anti-tumor efficacy. Anandamide, which is very fragile, also has anti-anxiety and anti-depressant properties. \r\n\r\nTHC in cannabis works on the same receptors that anandamide does, allowing it to stimulate happy and euphoric feelings in a similar way. THC works to supplement the body's internally produced anandamide. This is why it can help boost people's moods. Cannabis, however, doesn't always have joy-producing effects on people. Some folks may experience negative effects from using cannabis—this effect is also linked to anandamide. \r\n\r\n### Why Do Some Folks Feel Anxious After Using Cannabis?\r\n\r\nFAAH, also known as fatty acid amide hydrolase, is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that deactivates anandamide. People are genetically predisposed to produce more or less FAAH, which changes the levels of anandamide in their body.\r\n\r\nFolks with less FAAH, who naturally have more anandamide, tend to have more anxiety-producing effects from cannabis. This is because their increased levels of anandamide quicken the biphasic effects of cannabis. The stimulation of anandamide is believed to be one of the main reasons why chocolate is one of the most commonly craved foods. Other foods, including truffles, parsley, tea and celery, also contain anandamide or stimulate its production. Exercise also can produce anandamide. Jan has chosen to follow a holistic route for her treatment of Parkinson’s, rather than more traditional western pharmaceutical methods. Through a combination of dietary change, exercise, natural supplements, and cannabis, Jan has found relief from her Parkinson’s related symptoms and hopes to slow the progression of the disease. She is also a passionate Wellness Consultant, helping others to learn about the potential benefits of cannabis for Parkinson's and other conditions.\r\n\r\n### What were your initial symptoms?\r\n\r\nI was diagnosed with Parkinson’s  when I was 45 years old. My mom, my sister, and I all have genetic Parkinson’s Disease. My mom was diagnosed at age 60. My sister is one year older than I and she was diagnosed at age 44. I had noticed that I was holding my arm funny. My right arm was straight out and not swinging while walking, so I called my sister and asked her if her arm did this funny thing where it just doesn't move. She said, “Oh you’re holding the invisible purse,” and this same stiff arm was one of her first symptoms as well. We then all went to the website 23 and Me (a genetic testing site) and ultimately found we all have the gene Lrrk2. Once we were all identified with the particular gene, we did a bunch of studies through UCSF, Stanford, and Sunnyvale Parkinson’s Institute. Genetic Parkinson’s hasn't become very evident until lately, so we are considered a unique case. \r\n\r\n### How did Parkinson’s affect your daily life?\r\n\r\nI am a pretty healthy person, so I wasn’t sure in the beginning if it would affect me at all. My mother and sister each are having their own individual journey, so I was pretty sure mine would be different as well. My sister started western meds and eventually had two brain surgeries, called deep brain stimulation (DBS). They put a pole in your head and a battery in your chest that allows for the stimulation of the production of dopamine. My sister had that done on both sides. My mother also had that surgery at 78 years old. Deep brain stimulation surgery really works for tremors and the movement symptoms because it stimulates the dopamine production. \r\n\r\nTremors are not my biggest issue though, my issue is really stiffness and rigidity in the way that I walk and drag my leg. I also can’t move my hand very well. I don’t have a resting tremor but when I try to use my hand it tremors. I just do everything with my left hand now because my right hand doesn’t signal to move properly, along with my right leg. In order to even get the deep brain stimulation surgery, you need to be on levodopa/carbidopa to make sure that dopamine actually helps the symptoms.  I have opted to not take western drugs for now, but I would also not be opposed if I felt it would improve my quality of life.  My neurologist told me, “the drugs do nothing to slow or stop the progression of the disease”.  However, they can apparently help with symptoms. \r\n\r\n### Was cannabis your first choice for treatment?\r\n\r\nCannabis wasn’t my first choice. I didn't know much about it six years ago. I read Grain Brain and learned how grain is bad for your brain function, so I made some dietary changes. I cut wheat out of my diet and I take antioxidants like green tea, blueberries and turmeric to keep my immune system strong.  I also exercise every day. I am a trained yoga practitioner and I’m also a trained Ayurveda practitioner. I knew a lot about health, nutrition, and exercise, so I worked to do everything naturally. \r\n\r\nI also tried a form of natural dopamine, which is made from mung beans called Mucuna Pruriens. Western pharmaceutical companies traditionally use Sinemet for Parkinson’s. Sinemet is made of Levodopa Carbidopa, which helps your body get the dopamine through the blood brain barrier.  Alternative medicine practitioners have developed a protocol with amino acids that gets the dopamine in you, and through the blood brain barrier without making you sick, but unfortunately it made me very sick. I tried it for a year and it did help with my symptoms a bit, but it made me nauseous all of the time so I stopped doing it. That’s when I started taking CBD tinctures. A friend told me about CBD tinctures and how they might help me, and I have been doing so ever since. \r\n\r\n### When did you first consider medicinal cannabis? \r\n\r\nIt was through the friend who recommended it. Then I immediately began doing research. We had a family friend of ours who was featured through United Patients Group. You can watch a video of his story, Stan Rutner, who was basically dying of cancer. As a last resort they gave him CBD oil and the results were amazing. My mom had sent me this video, so I called his daughter to talk to her about it. She was the person who got me the first information on what to take and how. I started meeting more and more people that gave me information on medicinal cannabis. The first tincture I used was a CBD tincture by Care by Design. \r\n\r\n### Do you use CBD and THCA?\r\n\r\nNow, I’m actually taking CBDA and THCA, they are both non-psychoactive. I micro dose both throughout the day. I take three doses a day about an hour before each meal. The product I take is made by a company called Alta Botanicals. I am working on a cannabis protocol with Alta Botanicals for Parkinson’s to get the [endocannabinoid system](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system) stimulated and working again. \r\n\r\n### How are you trying to help other patients?\r\n\r\nAlta Botanicals and I are trying various methods on me to see what works best with Parkinson's. I am working hard to stick to a protocol, which is easy to do because the medicine is so simple to take. We’re are observing what is going on and ultimately, we would love to be able to cure this disease and help other people with this disease. That’s the goal, of course, to help people get better. \r\n\r\n### How has using cannabis changed your day to day life?\r\n\r\nCannabis gives me some relief from my symptoms. When you have Parkinson’s, you lose your sense of taste and smell, your body kind of freezes up. You don’t have the same senses that you normally would because you lose your dopamine, which can also cause apathy and depression. CBDA and the THCA have actually brought back my sense of taste and smell. My physical senses, like my touch and feel, have also come back. \r\n\r\nWith Parkinson’s you tend to lose your connection between body and mind because of the lack of dopamine, but now I am much more aware of my body mind connection than I was before. I am still limping quite a bit and I still have trouble with my right hand. It’s hard, it is definitely still hard. I think if I keep building cannabis up in my system it will get better.  There are definitely some days when I just want to say screw it and go on western meds and get rid of my symptoms, but the western meds don’t do anything to slow or stop the disease, they just mask the symptoms. With cannabis, we can actually do something to slow the disease because of the connection between Parkinson’s and the endocannabinoid system. There are also a lot of side effects to the western pharmaceuticals, which I want to try to avoid. \r\n\r\n### What would you want other people to know about cannabis?\r\n\r\nI went to a woman’s cannabis party hosted by [Octavia Wellness](http://octaviarosewellness.com/), where I was able to meet many people in the industry. That was my first experience where I felt like I had something to share and people really related to it and listened. I want people to know how acceptable it is to use cannabis and how I am carrying on with a regular job, a regular life, and I have an eleven-year old child. It’s not scary and there’s nothing taboo about it. I want people to know we can do this without being “high”. The benefits of CBD are profound, the information about the benefits of CBD are spreading by leaps and bounds every day. I am committed to supporting people to heal.\r\n\r\nIronically, that first Octavia Wellness party has opened a pathway for me to help other people.  I actually have teamed up with the founder, Carrie Tice and for the past year we have worked on creating a great platform to allow for people like me to be able to become trained in cannabis and become Wellness Consultants. Everyone has people in their personal network who are interested in learning about cannabis- and they may not feel comfortable going to dispensaries - we have solved this by making the process personal.  We are passionate about giving people safe and legal access to trusted information and products.  It's quite empowering!\r\n \r\n### Does the stigma attached to cannabis have merit?\r\n\r\nCannabis can be recreational and I have nothing against recreational cannabis. Sometimes having some THC at night helps me sleep. The benefits we get from the whole, healing plant, if we use it responsibly, are endless. Marijuana is a natural anti-inflammatory; it is a better anti-inflammatory than ibuprofen or anything like that. I’ve heard many lectures about the benefits of cannabis for PTSD, cancer, and many other conditions. I believe all illnesses are caused by some form of inflammation, and cannabis works to alleviate that. If we can get rid of the inflammation, have a healthy attitude, healthy diet, and exercise, we can avoid a lot of illnesses. Cannabis can’t do it alone, but neither can any pharmaceuticals.
