But as people worldwide struggle to cope with the new stresses and challenges of life in coronavirus times, they're discovering new ways to get and stay healthy. \n\nThe top 5 health and wellness trends for 2021 and beyond were born of necessity during the pandemic, but they're here to stay, with multiple benefits for body and mind. Bon voyage 2020, here's what you need to know about the future of health and wellness for 2021 and beyond:\n\n### 1. Telemedicine Transforms Healthcare\n\nAccording to the CDC, during the first quarter of 2020, the number of telemedicine appointments across the US increased by 50 percent. By mid-year, that number had risen to 154 percent.\n\nTelemedicine – consulting with a doctor or other healthcare practitioner by phone or computer – has gradually been working its way into the medical mainstream, thanks to a larger digital revolution in healthcare that has introduced various tools for monitoring a patient's health from home. \n\nSince March, new telehealth options have been helping millions of patients and doctors stay in touch, save time, and avoid risky contact during the pandemic. And many practitioners say it's even more effective than in-person appointments, even for people with more serious, chronic conditions.\n\nWearable device fitness and wellness trackers, like the Fitbit or Oura ring, also help make telehealth more relevant and user-friendly. These devices collect essential data about blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen levels and share them with doctors with the click of a mouse. \n\nMore sophisticated \"digiceutical\" devices like glucose monitors and oximeters can help doctors manage severe diseases like diabetes and COPD from a distance.\n\nThe most recent surge in the use of telemedicine is within the realm of mental health. [Recent statistics reveal](https://getstream.io/blog/telemedicine-statistics/) that in the months since January 2020, the number of people booking virtual mental health visits has increased by an average of 77 percent.\n\nThe rise of telemedicine has also produced niche services that focus on meeting a particular need or interest outside the medical mainstream. \n\nHolistic practices like [Parsley Health]( https://www.parsleyhealth.com)\n offer access to a community of practitioners through monthly plans that allow subscribers unlimited access to its services and at-home testing. Canada's [Gennev](https://gennev.com/) focuses on the health concerns of menopausal women with coaching, lifestyle advice, and more. And numerous medical cannabis sites such as [HelloMD](https://www.hellomd.com/) support people who use or want to try cannabis for a variety of health concerns.\n\n### 2. Psychedelics Meet Mainstream Medicine\n\nFor decades, psychedelic drugs like LSD, psilocybin (or \"magic mushrooms\"), and peyote were considered dangerous, mind-altering substances. But [recent research reveals](https://maps.org/news/media/7732-hellomd-maps-founder-rick-doblin-talks-psychedelics-mdma-the-fda) that these and other psychedelics can have powerful benefits for treating PTSD, depression, and other mental health issues. \n\nBacked by entities like the [Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Medicine](https://maps.org/)(MAPS) and the Canadian startup [Numinus Wellness](https://numinus.ca/), [MDMA](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/mdma:-coming-soon-to-a-therapist's-office-near-you)(3,4 methylenedioxymethamphetamine), a drug better known by the street names Molly and ecstasy, is rapidly becoming a vital tool in treating severe PTSD. \n\nAlong with [MDMA-assisted therapy](https://www.verywellmind.com/psychedelic-therapy-how-does-it-work-5079161), other psychedelics are being investigated for their potential health benefits. Advocates of microdosing LSD, psilocybin, and other drugs say that taking minimal doses of these substances can help to improve mood and concentration without causing the altered consciousness of higher doses. In that way, they can work in ways similar to pharmaceuticals for problems such as anxiety and depression without powerful prescription drugs' undesirable side effects.\n\n2021 holds great promise for the legalization of psilocybin and MDMA for clinically-assisted psychotherapy across North America.\n\n### 3. The Gut Microbiome: Your Second Brain\n\nIf you've experienced \"butterflies in the stomach\" before a stressful event you know the brain and the gut are somehow connected. A [growing body of research](https://www.healthline.com/health/digestive-health/things-your-gut-wants-you-to-know) is revealing just how close that connection is – and why this \"second brain\" in your stomach and intestines plays a crucial role in the health of body and mind. \n\nWith functions ranging from breaking down foods and making essential nutrients available to the body as a whole, the gut is the key to maintaining energy, regulating hormones, boosting immunity, and more. \n\nAnd now, scientists are learning that the rich and complicated gut microbiome has some startling similarities to the brain – and those similarities help explain the connections between emotions and the digestive system.\n\nAntidepressants can often help to relieve the symptoms of bowel diseases like IBS and Crohn's disease. And conversely, changes in diet can sometimes benefit people with mood disorders like anxiety and depression. \n\nIt's estimated that 95 percent of the body's supply of the mood-boosting chemical serotonin production occurs within the small intestines, not the brain. Due to this, [supporting gut health](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/how-cannabis-can-keep-you-healthy-via-your-gut-microbiome) with a proper diet and supplements like pre-and probiotics, or cannabis. Eating fermented foods like kimchi or saurkraut is a good addition as are mushroom supplements which act as prebiotics to stimulate the growth of gut microbiota. \n\nAll of these can play an influential role in relieving common mental health issues and may boost the immune system for overall health.\n\nAs research continues to reveal new insights into the gut's microbiome, this \"second brain\" will become the focus of healthy wellness routines and lifestyle changes to promote mental and physical health in 2021 and beyond.\n\n### 4. Preventative Lifestyle: Maximizing Wellness\n\nThe pandemic has put a renewed focus on wellness, as people worldwide are working harder to get and stay healthy. By mid-2020, the US was facing a shortage of bicycles – and online fitness apps and classes are at an all-time high as gyms remain closed, and people look for new ways to stay fit during lockdowns and quarantines. \n\nThis \"preventative lifestyle\" also includes increased interest in cooking healthy meals at home and taking other steps to avoid illness, such as reducing stress, improving sleep, and adding key supplements such as Vitamin C, Vitamin D, zinc, and turmeric to the diet. \n\nAlthough many people adopted healthier habits during the pandemic out of necessity, these lifestyle changes have positive effects that will outlast the COVID-19 crisis – and committing to overall wellness is a key trend that will last far beyond the pandemic.\n\n### 5. Holistic, Conscious Parenting: Redefining Family\n\nFor millions of children globally, virtual learning has taken the place of classrooms, creating new issues for parents who may also be working from home. Other stressors come with isolation from extended family, such as grandparents and other family members, who in the past may have helped more around the house. \n\nThe pandemic has challenged parents with kids at home on every level. For many, it means embracing a more holistic parenting style that's less focused on [competition and achievement](https://www.mindbodygreen.com/articles/end-of-competitive-parenting-how-covid-brought-us-together) and more about children become healthy, happy individuals. \n\nBecause parents and children are spending more time together than usual, they're finding new ways to bond as a family around shared activities and interests. That also allows parents to reevaluate their beliefs and values and develop new systems to make the family work. As everyone returns to work and school, this kind of conscious parenting could continue to shape family dynamics well after the pandemic subsides.\n\nThe COVID crisis has had a lasting impact on public health, and changed the way people manage health and wellness in daily life. Amateur to professional athletes alike are claiming cannabis to have numerous beneficial properties for enhancing a fitness routine. Here, we'll sort through the information to allow you to make an informed decision about combining cannabis and exercise.\n\n### Weigh the Pros and Cons Carefully\n\nAny time you're considering a change in your workout regimen, it's important to carefully examine both sides of the equation. Even if a product is [naturally derived](https://theconversation.com/bad-medicine-why-natural-does-not-mean-safe-6410), there may be drawbacks. With that in mind, study up on the different points relating to cannabis products, and consider both the potential positive and negative effects on your health. With a solid foundation, you can make an informed decision.\n\n### Cannabis 101\n\nEven if you're comfortable with common cannabis-oriented terminology, you might be surprised by unfamiliar words and phrases. With that in mind, you can review our [cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/blogs/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana), to be familiar with the basics. Learn the difference between THC and CBD, the importance of cannabinoids and how you may react based on the conditions or symptoms you wish to treat.\n\n### CBD or THC\n\nThere are two general product types available for cannabis users: THC and CBD. Both THC and CBD are [chemical compounds](https://hellomd.com/blogs/articles/quick-guide-to-finding-your-ideal-cbd-to-thc-ratio) with similar structures, but as Healthline explains, there are key differences. CBD products, why technically psychoactive, will not get you high, but THC products will. THC products also bind to receptors in your brain. CBD products will not bond with the receptors in your brain, and it appears they might inhibit THC products from doing so. \n\n### Methods of Consumption\n\nOnce you decide whether you would like to consume CBD, THC or a combination of both, there are numerous methods of consumption to consider. Other than smoking flower, there are many different ways to consume cannabis. Many athletes prefer edibles as they are easy to ingest and come in a prepackaged dosage. Typically an edible may take 1-2 hours to take effect, whereas a sub-lingual or tincture, take as little as 15-30 minutes. Other ways to ingest cannabis would be a gel capsules, topicals, transdermal patches, vaping and marijuana buds. It's important to know that the consumption method also affects how much cannabis your body may absorb.\n\n### Potential Positives\n\nAccording to some studies, cannabis has excellent anti-inflammatory properties. Cannabis compounds appear to engage with the immune system, reducing your chances of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. It also seems to offset inflammation in the brain and help ward off Alzheimer's disease. Workout-wise, the anti-inflammatory effects can mean a [quicker recovery period](https://www.mensjournal.com/health-fitness/marijuana-can-relieve-pain-and-improve-athletic-recovery-so-why-isnt-it-legal/). \n\nMen's Health also notes there is a potential that using cannabis products within hours of exercising could enhance your workout in important ways, such as boosting focus and promoting a more enjoyable workout experience. Some products like CBD creams may even reduce exercise-induced pain . For some, it can make a difference in motivation for whether a workout plan is followed or not. \n\n### Potential Negatives\n\nThere are [negative aspects](https://vapingdaily.com/marijuana-side-effects/) to bear in mind if you're considering consuming vaping or smoking flower. The biggest drawback relates to lung health. The American Lung Association explains certain forms of cannabis can be particularly damaging to your lungs. Smoking marijuana can be especially harmful if it contains irritants, fungus, or mold, which many illicit products do.\n\nSome people think vaping is safer, but it can damage your health in a similar fashion to e-cigarettes. Additionally, many people are surprised to learn that hot dabbing also appears to have drawbacks, as it can contain lung-damaging toxins and pollutants. There is concern dabbing could expose users to carcinogens.\n\nIf you elect to add cannabis to your workout plan, be sure to examine both sides of the equation carefully. There are benefits and drawbacks, and it's best to make your decision with solid information. Education is power, especially when it comes to health and fitness. However, athletes may reach their goals at a cost. \n\nFirst, there’s the preparation for performance—making sure you’re rested and in peak condition mentally and physically. And on the day of your athletic event, you must feel relaxed and focused.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) and [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nThen, there’s the recovery afterward where you need to deal with the pain of the performance, the damage done to muscles and tissue, and any lingering tension from competition.\n\nWhile there’s a host of treatments and techniques to deal with sports performance and recovery, cannabidiol (CBD) is increasingly moving up the podium among athletes who want a more natural way to:\n\n* Deal with pain and inflammation\n* Address muscle damage\n* Replenish themselves with deep sleep \n* Relax frayed nerves\n\n“[Some people have [CBD] the night before a workout](https://www.gq.com/story/cbd-fitness-supplements),” says triathlete Andrew Talanksy in an interview with GQ. “Usually less have it during. And most are stoked to have it after as recovery.” \n\nFor his part, Andrew ingests CBD capsules to:\n\n* Ease regular post-performance aches and pains\n* Get much-needed sleep \n* Reduce the stress of competition\n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS FOR ATHLETES? VAPEXHALES FOUNDER SAYS YES](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-for-athletes-vapexhales-founder-says-yes/) \n\n“[CBD for exercise-induced inflammation](https://health.usnews.com/wellness/fitness/articles/2018-05-11/can-cbd-products-improve-your-fitness-results) is absolutely the next big area we need to explore,” says Thorsten Rudroff, an exercise scientist and director of the Integrative Neurophysiology Laboratory at Colorado State University, in a _U.S. News_ interview. \n\nBut he adds: “Most of what we know about CBD and exercise is based on anecdotal reports. There's basically no research on the topic. We need to investigate CBD's effects on inflammatory biomarkers in athletes and exercise recovery.” \n\n### Athletes Turn to CBD to Address Pain & Inflammation\n\nTwo years ago, the World Anti-Doping Agency and the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency removed CBD from their list of prohibited substances. Though tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), with its psychoactive effects, as well as synthetic cannabinoids, are still on the list of banned substances.\n\nSo, athletes are free to explore consuming CBD to see how it can supplement the natural defenses of the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) to deal with pain and inflammation.\n\nThorsten points out that he’s seen increasing numbers of collegiate and professional athletes, and older adults, consuming CBD oils and edibles right after exercise, hoping to recover more quickly and effectively.\n\nInflammation after a hard workout isn’t in itself a bad thing. It triggers the body’s repair mechanisms, allowing muscle tissue to grow back stronger, improving future athletic performances. \n\nBut too much tissue damage and inflammation can injure the body with strains and sprains, and result in poor athletic results.\n\nTraditional ways to cope with inflammation and pain include:\n\n* Eating antioxidant-rich foods\n* Taking ice baths\n* Consuming over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen (Advil) and naproxen sodium (Aleve)\n* Using opioids (for severe pain management)\n\nStudies have shown that cannabis can help reduce pain, which can include stiff joints and musculoskeletal pain from exercise. \n\nAnd while athletes have used NSAIDs for decades, they’re also associated with kidney damage and increased risk of heart attack and stroke. So, some athletes are finding that [CBD can relieve pain with minimal side effects](https://trainright.com/cbd-for-athletes-cannabidiol/). \n\nWhile opioids may be very successful at managing pain, they can come at a cost that may include addiction and death. CBD isn’t as successful at dealing with high-intensity pain, but may have a role to play in long-term pain management, taken on its own or alongside other medications.\n\nThere are also some suggestions that CBD can help slow the breakdown of muscles after exertion and even promote more muscle building. For example, preliminary research offered by the _Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research_ suggests that [CBD works in conjunction with the ECS to interfere with cortisol](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8257923), the stress hormone that reduces protein production and gets in the way of tissue growth.\n\n### But Can CBD Improve Actual Sports Performance? \n\nWhen it comes to sports performance itself, CBD’s benefits are harder to quantify. Yes, the cannabinoid can help relieve stress and promote sleep, both of which can help athletes compete better. \n\nBut this isn’t the same as a direct link in helping during the event or game. And when marathon runners talk about the help cannabis gave them while out on the course, it’s usually in regard to the effects of THC, not CBD.\n\nSays Michael Kennedy, a cardiologist and clinical pharmacologist who examined 15 studies on cannabis and exercise performance: “Different types of cannabis may have a lot of therapeutic values—but none of it will make you run fast, and it won’t make you stronger.” \n\n### Ways Athletes Can Consume CBD\n\nIn taking CBD, athletes have a choice of:\n\n* Oils\n* Capsules\n* Infused foods and drinks\n* Vaping \n\nFor the fastest pain and inflammation relief, you can choose from:\n\n* Vaping\n* Sublingual tinctures\n* Topical creams applied directly to the injured area \n\nThough vaping may be the consumption method that produces effects the fastest, many athletes would probably resist doing anything that risks stressing their lungs. \n\nFor longer-lasting effects, infused drinks and edibles may be the way to go.\n\nIt can get tricky when deciding what CBD dose to consume. First, it’s sometimes hard to calculate doses, because the amount of CBD that’s actually in different products varies so much and the bioavailability (how much CBD is actually accessible in your body) of each consumption method is different. The most precise way to take CBD may be capsules, or by calculating how many milligrams of CBD are in a given volume of a tincture.\n\nBut as a rule of thumb, if you’re new to CBD, it’s best to start with a low dose and work your way up. Luckily, living in California, I can access this plant-based medicine where so many others are denied. Ultimately, medical marijuana transformed my health—and my life. \n\nTaking cannabis every day eliminated both my chronic pain as well as the anxiety that accompanied my headaches. And today, my lifestyle is far more active as a result. For instance, this summer I’ll be hiking the John Muir Trail (JMT), the legendary 21-day, 211-mile California backwoods trek from Yosemite Valley to Mt. Whitney. You think if I still had recurring migraines I’d attempt this off-the-grid, grueling trip? Absolutely not. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nAnd I don’t intend to stop medicating with marijuana while I’m out on the trails. Cannabis has helped me feel well enough to take on this physical challenge, and here’s how I’ll be taking cannabis to prevent migraines (the last thing I need) during the hike, help my physical recovery and keep me in a smiling, happy mood, no matter what we encounter out in the wilderness. \n\n### All About the John Muir Trail\n\nThe JMT is a trail that cuts through California’s High Sierra mountain range and is also part of the larger Pacific Coast Trail (PCT). It’s often considered to be one of the most visually stunning trails in the United States, and it’s also one of the mildest and sunniest mountain ranges in the world. The trail crosses through epic landscapes including:\n\n* The Ansel Adams Wilderness\n* The John Muir Wilderness\n* Sequoia National Park\n* Kings Canyon National Park\n* Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the continental U.S. \n\n\nThe JMT is considered a difficult trek, testing a hiker’s limits across body, mind and spirit. In other words, a backpacker’s paradise.\n\n### Why Hike the John Muir Trail?\n\nA lot of people ask me why I’m hiking the JMT. The simplest answer is that I’m doing it for me. \n\nThe past seven years of my life have been devoted to cannabis. During my time at HelloMD, I’ve listened to and learned from thousands of people who yearn for and often obtain a better quality of life through cannabis. The plant has also helped me go from a life of imbalance to one of personal strength and self-empowerment. \n\nFor me, the harmonious balance of body, mind and spirit is always the goal. Achieving this balance, even for a short time, is what I consider optimal wellness. My strategies to help me achieve my wellness goals include, but aren’t exclusive to: \n\n* A healthy diet tailored to my needs, including the elimination of alcohol\n* Regular exercise with Vinyasa yoga, and other movements that inspire me\n* Working to feel connected with those around me\n* Putting the phone down for much-needed family time\n* Getting at least eight hours of sleep per night\n* Smiling and laughing as much as possible\n* Being more present in the moment\n* Consuming cannabidiol (CBD) and microdosing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) daily\n* Communing with nature and hiking in the beautiful hills next to my house\n\nThrough the years of hiking, I’ve found a personal reset button that calms my being, centers my mind and allows me to more accurately perceive the world around me. \n\n![Pamela Hadfield hiking with cannabis](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-46ba949b-9bba-4cd1-ac69-34eecab14000/original.png)\n\nIt’s not easy finding peace when there’s constant pressure. We’re pressed for time, money, love, acceptance or whatever else we’re endlessly seeking. My belief is that sometimes we need to stop the train, get off and take a good look around.\n\nHiking the JMT isn’t a be-all answer to my optimal wellness, but I expect that I’ll gain valuable insights about myself and my life. At the same time, I’ll be giving myself the gift of a tremendous experience of walking meditation, pushing my personal limits and improving my fitness in one of the world’s most spectacular natural environments. \n\nIt’s a luxury to have the time to indulge myself in this dream, and it won’t be easy leaving my family and work behind, much less hot showers. But it’s also a reminder that I’m only here for a short time; I need to live my life and fulfill my dreams while I’m still on this planet. \n\n### Why I’m Bringing Cannabis Along on My Hike\n\nCBD and THC are two welcome additions to my backpack, and both will be making the journey with me.\n\nCBD has been reported to be:\n\n* An anti-inflammatory\n* An antispasmodic \n* An effective pain reliever \n\nCBD is responsible for stopping my migraines, and I’ve consumed it daily for years as a preventative measure. It also helps me if I feel agitated, an emotion I assume I may feel while ascending steep mountains while also running at a high-calorie deficit. \n\nIn microdoses, THC helps me get in my zone and also acts as a potent pain reliever, which I’ll need after daily 10–13-mile hikes at elevation. I’m also facing facts: I’m likely to have a lot of aches and pains—I’m not 21 anymore.\n\nMy CBD product of choice is Rosette’s No. 20 Rich Cannabis Tincture, which has a 20:1 ratio of CBD to THC. Because of the CBD to THC ratio, it doesn’t make me feel high like a THC-rich product does and has been my go-to choice for years. I plan on taking 10 mg of the Rosette tincture in the morning and in the evening. \n\nWhen hiking, I’m also a big fan of transdermal cannabis patches, as they treat both localized and general pain. I’ll often wear a patch on the side of my hips or my lower back above the sacrum, which helps a lot with any discomfort I feel.\n\nDuring the day, I also plan to microdose THC from my CamelBak with Atlas Edibles’ delicious powdered cannabis drinks. This is my favorite breakout cannabis product of 2019. The form is absolute genius, because it’s a powder you mix with water, tea or any other beverage, not a ready-made drink like you may have seen in a dispensary. The powders are microdosed with CBD and THC, and they taste fantastic, with flavors like lemongrass ginger and pomegranate green tea. \n\nI also plan to bring along Atlas’ delicious granola bars, which I’ll microdose after dinner to help me sleep better throughout the night. \n\n \nIf you’re new to cannabis, it may be good to know that the way I microdose the plant never leaves me feeling high or consciously altered. Over the years, I’ve learned how to consume marijuana to help me feel my personal best. For me, it’s a cross section of specific product types like tinctures or vape pens from brands that I like and specific dosages I’ve landed on. \n\nEveryone’s different, and it may take a period of experimentation to find what works for you. We suggest always starting at a low dosage and taking it slow before consuming more. \n\nI’ll be leaving for the trail the last week in July, expecting to return some 21 days later, give or take a few. Wish me luck and please leave comments below if you’d like to share something about cannabis and hiking or give me advice if you’ve conquered the JMT yourself. \n\nPhoto credits: Simon Dannhauer/Shutterstock.com (main image), [Pamela Hadfield](https://www.instagram.com/p/ByDdWg7B_hq/) (Pamela image), [Atlas Edibles](https://www.instagram.com/p/BdBUW3ynJzD/) (Atlas Edibles granola image)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. And of those, nearly 50,000 of are fatal. A number of varied events can cause brain injuries, like accidents, sports injuries or stroke. \n\nBut a 2014 study published in the journal _American Surgeon_ uncovers that [people with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in their systems have a far lower rate of death](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25264643) from a TBI than those who don’t have THC in their bodies. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nThe reason? Research on the neuroprotective properties of cannabis suggests that THC, along with other cannabinoids, can activate an array of different processes that help heal damaged tissues and encourage the growth of new neural networks in the brain. \n\nThis is because these potent cannabinoids appear to activate self-protective procedures in the brain that help it heal from various traumatic events.\n\n### What’s a Traumatic Brain Injury & How Do You Get One?\n\nJust about everyone has had a bump on the head. Most of the time, these kinds of events don’t cause serious damage, thanks to the hard skull that protects the vulnerable, gelatinous brain. \n\nBut the skull can’t always protect the brain, and sometimes it even contributes to the damage. TBIs can range from relatively minor to severe and even fatal. [Common causes of TBI include](https://www.traumaticbraininjury.com/what-are-the-causes-of-tbi/):\n\n* **Impact injuries:** These types of injuries can include open or closed injuries to the head. But whether they open the skull, these injuries can cause damage to brain tissues and bleeding in the brain. \n\n> These kinds of injuries come from events like falls, car accidents, assault and high-impact sports like football. Even getting hit in the head by a ball can cause an impact brain injury. Soldiers in combat areas also experience these types of injuries, often more than once.\n\n* **Diffuse axonal injuries:** Also called deceleration injuries, this kind of trauma happens when the skull is moving and suddenly stops, such as in a car accident. \n\n> This causes the brain to keep moving against the skull, creating a phenomenon known as diffuse axonal shearing—the compressing and stretching of delicate neuronal axons.\n\n* **Hypoxia:** This is a condition in which the brain is deprived of oxygen for a period of time. Causes of hypoxia include respiratory failure, heart attacks and drowning. When the brain doesn’t receive oxygen, brain cells begin to die.\n\n* **Metabolic disorders:** When someone exposes their brain cells to chemicals or toxins that can damage neurons, metabolic disorders occur. Whether ingested, inhaled or placed on the skin, certain solvents, insecticides and other poisons can cause the death of brain cells and neuronal connections, too.\n\nWith other kinds of physical trauma, the greatest damage occurs at the time of the event, and after that, the body gradually begins to heal. \n\nBut when an impact injury, axonal injury or an event like a stroke harms the brain, most of the damage actually happens after the event, during the recovery period. \n\nAnd this is where cannabis can help.\n\n### How the Brain Can Damage Itself After Injury \n\nIn the minutes, days and weeks after trauma to the brain, the body responds to the injury with a flood of chemicals. It also initiates accelerated processes that contribute to the death of cells and disruption of neural connections, including:\n\n* **Increased glutamate production:** Glutamate is a brain chemical that plays a key role in brain signaling and information processing. It’s also one of the most abundant neurotransmitters in the central nervous system. But in large amounts it can also be toxic to neurons. A brain injury causes the release of massive amounts of glutamate, which can kill cells in the affected areas.\n\n* **Brain inflammation:** Inflammation is a normal response to trauma as the brain works to repair itself. But inflammation can also affect the way neural networks operate and can interfere with the communication between cells.\n\n* **Increased oxidation from free radicals:** When oxygen molecules in the body destabilize, toxic byproducts called free radicals form. These chemicals can damage cell DNA and even cause cell death through a process called oxidation. A healthy system can neutralize free radicals before they can do much harm. But after an injury, levels of free radicals can soar. This causes severe oxidative stress, which damages brain cells.\n\n### How THC & Other Cannabinoids Can Protect an Injured Brain\n\nTHC is the best known of the many cannabinoids in the _Cannabis sativa_ plant. Favored by many as a way to feel a pleasant, relaxing high, THC also has a complicated relationship with the brain. \n\nSome studies have shown that heavy cannabis consumption can damage brain cells and can cause long-term deficits in memory and concentration, especially in young consumers. \n\nAnd THC can also cause anxiety and paranoia, rather than euphoria, under some circumstances. But THC’s affinity for endocannabinoid receptors in the brain appears to make it uniquely able to help the brain repair itself after an injury.\n\n\nThe endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a widespread network of receptors throughout the body that responds both to cannabinoid-like chemicals that the body produces, and to cannabinoids from outside sources, mainly cannabis. \n\nSo far, research has identified two cannabinoid receptors: CB1 and CB2.\n\nBoth of these receptors are plentiful in the brain, and THC directly activates them. This means that [THC can affect the role of these receptors](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21418185) in processes that accelerate after a brain injury. \n\nThe CB1 receptor affects the production of glutamate, which floods the brain after an injury. Research shows that THC can reduce the amount of glutamate that’s released, so that it has less power to damage and even kill brain cells. \n\nTHC also works together with cannabidiol (CBD) and other cannabis compounds to reduce inflammation and help protect the body from the harmful effects of free radicals after a brain injury. \n\nResearch shows that cannabis is a powerful neuroprotectant that can guard brain cells and neural networks even in diseases like Alzheimer’s and head trauma from sports injuries. \n\nAnd THC just may be the cannabis compound that can save lives and help the brain heal itself after injury.\n\nPhoto credit: StunningArt/Shutterstock.com\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. If you haven’t tried this growing trend, it’s pretty simple: You take cannabis before practicing yoga. Marijuana’s relaxing and pain-relieving properties can help improve your physical experience, calm your busy mind and allow you to sink deep into yoga’s meditative state. \n\nOf course, as simple as the idea is, the strain of cannabis you choose can have a big impact on your experience. Some strains may contribute calm and pain relief, while others may lead to unwanted effects like a muddled mind or feeling jittery. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nHere are our picks of marijuana strains that may help you get the most out of your yoga session. \n\n### 1. Grape Ape Can Help You Relax & Quell Your Aches & Pains\n\n![Grape Ape Marijuana Strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-1d634a8e-8fbc-4658-b662-a2f54e63437d/original.png)\n\nFor those looking to sink into a relaxing yoga session, the most common starting point is an indica marijuana strain with calming effects. Indicas tend to produce the most relaxing effects, which can be a big help during a yoga practice. \n\nAmong indicas, [Grape Ape](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7ce671d520d60009f4f4c0) is one popular indica option to try. It’s known for its sweet, grape flavor and aroma, and for imparting:\n\n* Carefree relaxation\n* A clear mind\n* Pain relief \n\nGrape Ape can melt away the tension before you start to stretch, leaving you calm, uplifted and pain-free for your yoga session. \n\nBut be forewarned. Grape Ape is also well known for its sedative and hunger-inducing effects. If you’re sensitive to these effects, Grape Ape may be too much for you. Instead, opt for a hybrid like [GSC](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7ce3c1d520d60009f4f4b6/gsc) or a sativa like [Super Lemon Haze](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7ce2f6d520d60009f4f4b4/super-lemon-haze). \n\n### 2. Northern Lights Can Help Quiet Your Mind During Yoga\n\nAnother indica that works well for cannabis yoga is [Northern Lights](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7ce57ed520d60009f4f4bb/northern-lights). \nThis popular indica marijuana strain has a sweet, earthy and spicy aroma with hints of pine, and is prized for the dreamy and relaxed euphoria that it imparts to consumers. \n\nLike Grape Ape, Northern Lights is known to:\n\n* Relax the body\n* Relieve pain\n* Uplift mood\n\nBut unlike Grape Ape, the high with Northern Lights can be very cerebral. If you need a little something to slow your mind down so that you can stay focused on the physical sensations of yoga, this is a great choice. \n\nNorthern Lights is also known to induce appetite and sleepiness, so like Grape Ape, it shouldn’t be consumed by those who are sensitive to these effects. The last thing you want is to feel too sleepy or hungry to stay present in your yoga practice. \n\n### 3. GSC Provides a Balanced, Uplifted High\n\n![GSC Marijuana Strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-7681d247-7279-4abd-8a68-516f26e04cd5/original.png)\n\nIf you’re one of those people who doesn’t do well with indicas because they make you too hungry or sleepy, there are other kinds of marijuana strains you can try. \n\nOne option is to go with a balanced hybrid strain like [GSC (formally known as Girl Scout Cookies)](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7ce3c1d520d60009f4f4b6/gsc). This popular strain is sweet and earthy with hints of a cookie-like aroma. It’s beloved by many for its grounded high, which doesn’t energize or sedate, but leaves the consumer feeling energetically balanced, calm and uplifted. \n\nAnother benefit of GSC is the strain’s powerful body high, which can ease tension, pain and nausea. Its cerebral high is also powerful. And while most who take it remain fairly functional, it can lead to a feeling of time slowing down, which can really enhance a yoga experience. \n\nRELATED: [THE CONNECTION BETWEEN YOGA & CANNABIS](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/58a38cc01689ad0017e8493b/the-connection-between-yoga-and-cannabis)\n\n### 4. Super Lemon Haze Can Give You an Energy Boost Before or After Yoga\n\n![Super Lemon Haze Marijuana Strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-37705e58-98e2-45a3-aad7-6ed58571bb26/original.png)\n\nIndicas and hybrids are usually recommended for new cannabis yoga practitioners. But if you’re familiar with cannabis strains and know that sativas work best for you, [Super Lemon Haze](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7ce2f6d520d60009f4f4b4/super-lemon-haze) is a great sativa-dominant option for cannabis yoga. \n\nA vibrant and zesty strain, Super Lemon Haze is sweet, tart and lemony with strong citrus notes. \nIt’s a highly energetic strain, making it a great option for those who get tired during yoga and need an extra boost—either before or after the workout.\n\nIt’s also an incredibly uplifting, euphoric and relaxing strain (for those who can handle the energy). Super Lemon Haze also imparts a pain- relieving body high, and a clear, relaxed cerebral high that fits in great with any yoga practice. \n\nOn the other hand, for those sensitive to the energetic effects of sativas, this cannabis strain could cause negative effects like anxiety or headaches. If you find that you react this way to sativas, stick to a hybrid or indica strain for your cannabis yoga practice. \n\n### 5. High-CBD ACDC Will Help With Pain & Focus Without Psychoactive Effects\n\n![ACDC Marijuana Strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-b295e6c5-5c4c-4693-9d88-d462dad74124/original.png)\n\nAll of the options already mentioned are strains with a high tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content. This works great for many, but isn’t right everyone. Some experience unwanted effects from THC such as:\n\n* A less than functional mind\n* Anxiety \n* A racing heart\n\nIf this has happened for you, or you’d like to ease into cannabis yoga with a more mild option that won’t leave you feeling too high, try a strain rich in cannabidiol (CBD) like [ACDC](https://www.hellomd.com/products?strainId=5a7cbe97d520d60009f4f4a5). \n\nACDC has an earthy and woody aroma with notes of pine. And with a 20:1 CBD-to-THC ratio, ACDC probably won’t impart any psychoactive effects.\n\nStill, ACDC can help with pain and tension, as well as reduce your overall anxiety. This can aid yoga by improving your ability to move and stretch without pain, and by calming your mind while leaving it clear and focused. Take ACDC before yoga to improve your experience, or afterwards to aid in recovery. \n\nPhoto credit: [Janet Orzechowski](https://unsplash.com/@rosalie2015)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. Since puberty, I experienced debilitating migraines, which traditional pharmaceuticals could not treat effectively. Over time, I found myself increasingly reliant on Vicodin, until a friend suggested I try medical marijuana. Within six months of starting a high CBD-low THC protocol, I had left my Vicodin behind and was preventing my migraines altogether. \n\nRELATED: [HOW ATHLETES GET A BOOST FROM THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a442705100a820006562f3d/how-athletes-get-a-boost-from-the-endocannabinoid-system)\n\nDuring these years, where my health often felt like a struggle, yoga was my constant companion. An equalizing force, both mentally and physically, yoga always made me feel like a reset button was within my reach. Whether it’s been a life-threatening illness of someone close to me, a stressful health condition or a really bad day at work, yoga has been, and still is, my go-to solution. Maintaining a consistent practice hasn’t always been easy, but has felt like my insurance policy for overall physical and mental wellness, especially under times of extreme stress. \n\nLiving in the San Francisco Bay Area, I’ve had the luxury of choice when it comes to top-notch yoga studios and teachers. Through the years, my favorite studio has always been Yoga Tree, a multi-studio retreat founded by Tim and Tara Dale, featuring some of the country’s best yoga teachers. (Pictured below is Peter Walters, one of Yoga Tree's illustrious teachers.)\n\n![Peter Walters, one of Yoga Tree's luminaries who will be at Om Rising](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-de2981c5-7732-468c-b1bd-a6ffbf2ca232/original.png)\n\nYoga at this particular studio goes beyond a standard Vinyasa practice, often incorporating live music and a focus on the deeper meaning behind yoga and its overall effect on body, mind and soul. So much so that I often refer to going to class at Yoga Tree as attending my “church.”\n\n### Om Rising: The Premier Playful Yoga Retreat\n\nWith that said, it was extremely exciting to hear that Tim Dale is launching [Om Rising](https://www.omrising.org/), a new, weekend-long NorCal yoga + music festival, nestled in the woods of Mendocino County—where yoga luminaries like Peter Walters, Mark Morford, Christy Brown and Sonya Genel, among others, will be leading various yoga sessions. Musical artists such as Jai Uttal and Suzanne Sterling will be performing throughout the weekend as well. \n\nWhen HelloMD was asked to participate at the event, in conjunction with the women’s cannabis networking group Ellementa, I was ecstatic because as stated above, I think that yoga and cannabis go together about as well as chocolate and peanut butter—really, really well. \n\nTim Dale, founder of OM Rising, says, “We’re thrilled to open up the dialogue, reduce the stigma and start the conversation around the health and wellness benefits of cannabis and CBD at Om Rising as just one of many unique offerings for the first year of our gathering.” \n\n![Om Rising will take place on the beautiful grounds of Camp Navarro.](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-22f99b01-6f67-436e-9f66-b2df3b34c812/original.png)\n_Om Rising will take place on the beautiful grounds of Camp Navarro._\n\n### The Ellementa Playground at OM Rising\n\nOm Rising will offer a cannabis 101 class (for ages 21 and over) in a large, grassy, outdoor amphitheater, as well as a microdosing class for therapeutic purposes by Ellementa leaders Laurie Light and Tali Eisenberg. It just hasn’t been talked about because of how stigmatized [cannabis] has been.” \n\nIndeed, soldiers in ancient times would sometimes use cannabis during battle because it lowered inhibitions, and modern-day athletes have tuned into these benefits—many like Eben say that it adds to their workouts. \n\n“I like to do high THC concentrates before my workout. I feel like it really primes my body for the physical stress I'm about to inflict on it,” says Eben. “I’ve got a lot of scar tissue and bad joints and muscles that don't necessarily stretch the way they used to—consuming a high THC concentrate eases my tissues and wipes out a lot of inflammation that I might feel in my joints.”\n\nRELATED: [EX-NFL PLAYER EBEN BRITTON: CANNABIS CAN SAVE THE LEAGUE MILLIONS](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a724c2ff24d1300077ccb27/ex-nfl-player-eben-britton-cannabis-can-save-the-league-millions)\n\nFor many of the folks at the CannAthlete session, cannabis helps them focus on the task at hand: Nate Moore is a professional mixed marital artist who uses cannabis because it helps with his striking. Nate described the first time he used cannabis during a workout, saying, “I was relaxed; I felt that I could hit much harder—I was more fluid, and I had more endurance.”\n\n“When [my trainer] said, ‘Turn your hip,’ it had a new meaning to me. So that’s when I started to see that [cannabis] was one of the bigger elements in my life that was missing,” he adds.\n\nNot all of the individuals who come to CannAthlete sessions are professional athletes. Cameron Whigham suffered a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed, but he says that cannabis has helped him regain some of the sensation in his legs. Like Nate, he uses cannabis during workout sessions.\n\n“[Cannabis] helps me focus on my workout,” says Cameron. “I get into the zone more, and I actually end up doing more than I intended to.” \n\n### Cannabis Helps Athletes Recover\n\n“After I work out, I like to use CBD to help relax my body,” says Cameron, touching on another application cannabis has in the sports world: recovery. Athletes are realizing that cannabis’s anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties can help them recuperate—UFC fighter Nate Diaz notably puffed on a CBD vape pen during a post-fight press conference last year, and Eben uses CBD lotions after workouts to help with joint pain.\n\nNate and Eben—who both partake in sports where hits to the head are the norm—add that the neuroprotective qualities of cannabis are particularly applicable to their bodies’ needs. \n\n“I've studied a lot of plants and herbal remedies—ancient and Ayurvedic, traditional Chinese medicine—there's no other substance on this planet that I know of that has the same neuroprotective qualities that cannabis does,” says Eben. \n\n`embed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=et7viXB8nR4`\n\n### Creating a Workout Plan That Integrates Cannabis\n\nAs athletes and avid cannabis consumers, both JP and Seibo are familiar with the relationship between cannabis and sports, and how the plant can help both athletes and non-athletes achieve fitness goals. \n\nJP works closely with athletes to fine-tune a regimen that works best for their body. He puts an emphasis on getting his clients to establish athletic goals and then uses cannabis to help them zero in on those goals. \n\n“Weed brings you back to a child's mind,” says Seibo. “You see something interesting and your attention focuses on that interesting thing. If we make that thing your competition—that's when we increase performance. And it's not just the weed—it's the full process.” JP and Seibo use cannabis to help athletes become “supple leopards”—calm and focused, yet also dynamic and ready to spring into action.\n\nCannabis is notorious for its myriad effects: What works for one person may not work for another. “Cannabis tends to facilitate a state of homeostasis—that's why people have so many different effects with the same strain. If you're a little wired and you need to calm down, you can smoke cannabis; if you're really tired and you need to pep up, you can consume cannabis,” says Seibo. \n\nJP and Seibo developed a program with this in mind. Generally, they first observe participants working out normally—without the help of cannabis. They then decide whether an individual would benefit from using cannabis as part of their workout regimen. For those who might gain an advantage, Seibo and JP’s program consists of roughly six steps: \n\n1. Cannabis performance assessment (CPA) \n2. Cannabis performance facilitation (CPF) \n3. Massage\n4. Reassessment \n5. Individualized workout \n6. 3:1 cardio interval\n\nThe CPA is a simple questionnaire that you can fill out before attending a CannAthlete get together—it’s a way to evaluate the trainee’s experience with cannabis and what they hope to get out of the program. \n\nBased off of answers in the CPA, participants consume a form of cannabis that meets their personality type and needs—this is the CPF. Participants then move onto the massage and stretching part of the program, which is conducted by a certified resistance stretching instructor and usually lasts for 10–15 minutes. \n\n“We do the massage because most people neglect that aspect of health and fitness and training,” says JP. He adds that this portion is meant to prime the body for the workout to come. This is also the time for the participant to acclimate to the cannabis they’ve consumed. \n\nDepending on how they feel after their massage, participants either consume more cannabis to balance out their mental state, or if they feel ready—they begin their workout. \n\nOftentimes, if participants are training as a group, JP and Seibo will also incorporate a kundalini breathing technique called “breath of fire,” which gives participants hyper-control of their diaphragm. According to Seibo, this technique “allows us to get everyone (more or less) at the same starting point, which is relaxed but with heightened awareness.”\n \nIf participants are on their own, JP and Seibo work with them to create an individualized workout. “This is where [participants] take many different paths. … We’re able to fine-tune the program by adding mixed martial arts, rhythm, dancing, stretching, personal training that includes weightlifting, posture, correction—but it's different for everybody,” says JP. \n\nWorkouts are rounded out by 3 to 1 cardio intervals. This type of high-intensity interval training is thought to be an efficient way to increase endurance, burn fat and build muscle—thus it’s applicable to many athletic pursuits. \n\nOnce the interval training is complete, athletes are welcome to explore more of the gym on their own, partake in CBD recovery or mingle with others who subscribe to a similar workout regimen and lifestyle. \n\nOverall, the CannAthlete program is about fine-tuning the participant’s relationship with cannabis. \n\n“If you really want to discover this, show up here on Saturday or Sunday. Everything is free,” says JP. “The cannabis is free; the snacks are free; the friendships here are definitely free—and even more valuable than anything else you'll get.”\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Those who use it claim that it helps them get into the “zone” so that they’re able to concentrate on repetitive activities and muscle movements.\r\n\r\nSome athletes also feel they’re less sore and recover more quickly, perhaps due to the anti-inflammatory properties of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) & cannabidiol (CBD). \r\n\r\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\r\n\r\nA variety of factors come into play when considering cannabis and exercise, such as: \r\n\r\n* mood \r\n* eating habits\r\n* time of day \r\n* workout partners \r\n* competition level \r\n* type of cannabis used\r\n* consumption methods\r\n* quality of cannabis \r\n\r\nThus, coming up with controlled studies to test the effectiveness of cannabis in boosting athletic performance is somewhat challenging. Athletic performance without the addition of performance-enhancing substances already varies on a day-to-day basis. How do you test the benefits of cannabis in lieu of these other confounding factors?\r\n\r\nBecause of these difficulties (and other issues, like cannabis’s contraband status in most parts of the world), few studies have attempted to look into this topic. A 2013 review article in _Sports Medicine_ acknowledges that [cannabis has the potential to enhance performance](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3717337/), based on anecdotal reports. \r\n\r\nRELATED: [3 POPULAR QUESTIONS ABOUT MARIJUANA & SPORTS ANSWERED](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a287acc100a820006562eba/3-popular-questions-about-marijuana-and-sports-answered)\r\n\r\nAnd according to a study that surveyed French student-athletes, [cannabis is interestingly more frequent in athletes who practiced a “sliding sport” such as bobsled or luge, than in other sports](http://www.ukcia.org/research/CannabisUseToEnhanceSportive.pdf). Researchers theorize this could be due to the danger of those sports, and that thrill-seeking may be involved. These findings align with anecdotal evidence from athletes who say cannabis helps reduce anxieties and inhibitions they often have during competition. \r\n\r\nThe study on French athletes doesn’t really address if cannabis affects performance—and so far, no research has attempted to take on this subject. It simply showed that chronic recreational users of cannabis tend to also use cannabis for sporting activities. \r\n\r\nGiven the growing popularity of cannabis use for sports performance, it’d be beneficial for organizations—both federal and athletic-oriented—to fund research that further delves into the pros and cons of this topic. \r\n\r\nPhoto credit: [Josh Nuttall](https://unsplash.com/@jjnuttall)\r\n\r\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Held at [Hit Fit SF](http://hitfitsf.com/mission/) in San Francisco's Mission district, the nearly hour-long, high-intensity workout exemplified the company's focus on fitness, nutrition and education.\r\n\r\nMoonman's Mistress co-founder Jamel Ramiro, who's also a personal trainer, started the session off by explaining Moonman's goal to destigmatize cannabis consumption and dispel the myth of the couch-potato stoner with these kinds of events, which integrate cannabis into a healthy, active lifestyle. \"Cannabis can help you with your workouts, with inflammation, or if you're just looking for a better quality of life,\" Jamel said. \"It can give you freedom so you can live better and move better.\"\r\n\r\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\r\n\r\nFollowing his brief informational-cum-inspirational introduction, Jamel then led the group through a short warmup, followed by a series of exercises that included burpees, jumping jacks, lunges, squats and more. Folks were clearly having a good time—there were smiles all around with plenty of whooping and hollering heard over the high-energy music.\r\n\r\n![HelloMD at Burn and Baked](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/articles-5a7493daf24d1300077ccb2a-5b57374f-c1c2-4992-a83d-d86947001757/original.jpg)\r\n\r\nBut don't take my word for it. Here's what attendees—which included weekend warriors, firefighters, personal trainers and folks living with Parkinson's disease—had to say about the Moonman's Mistress event, its mission, and consuming cannabis for sports performance and recovery:\r\n\r\n**Jessica H.:**\r\n\"[Burn and Baked] was a great workout. Super tough and really fun. … I think the Moonman mentality is really cool because there's [this idea of the] lazy stoner, but a lot of people like to smoke or use edibles or CBD to relieve anxiety or a whole host of other things _and_ they can be active. It doesn't necessarily have to be separate. It's cool that there are companies promoting that.\"\r\n\r\n**Keith Lucitt:**\r\n\"The social theory is that you're a lazy stoner. Trying cannabis in my 20s, I was like, well, I don't have that same reaction. I like to get up and do stuff. Sativa fires me up. I'm a certified personal trainer [and] an outdoor enthusiast. I use cannabis medicinally, for recovery and for fuel. With the use of the cannabis plant, I've had tremendous anti-inflammatory benefits. \r\n\r\nI believe in fueling the body with quality ingredients from Mother Nature. One of the biggest things that I really enjoy is the quality of ingredients that goes into the Moonman's Mistress products. In their Solar Flare cookies, they put in cinnamon to help regulate your blood pressure, pumpkin seeds for your skin and hair—they're a great way to take care of the body, and you feel better after you eat them.\"\r\n\r\nRELATED: [HEAL YOUR BODY WITH FOOD & CANNABIS](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/57d303eda18c34000b895b56/heal-your-body-with-food-and-cannabis)\r\n\r\n**Carrie Krane:**\r\n\"I was smiling for the entirety of the intense workout. Liz [Rudner] and Jamel of MoonMan's Mistress live their mission to educate on the importance of fitness and nutrition, incorporating cannabis into _healthy_ foods. I loved the CBD edible after my workout. It filled me up with good fats and proteins, and I'm guessing I won't be as sore tomorrow.\"\r\n\r\n![Cannabis as part of a healthy lifestyle](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/articles-5a7493daf24d1300077ccb2a-ef2d96d9-4b38-43b9-8c5d-ea0008bd2a2a/original.jpg)\r\n\r\n**Kevin Krejci:**\r\n\"I loved it. I went to the last Burn and Baked event. It was such a great workout; I ate a Moonman's Mistress CBD cookie afterwards and went to work and had one of my most productive days. And I slept great that night. \r\n\r\nI've always been one to try different things without jumping off a bridge. Even before my Parkinson's disease diagnosis, I've always looked for ways to track [my vitals] better. I just feel like—just try it and see what happens. So, I'm kind of experimenting still. I just find in general that [after eating a Moonman's Mistress CBD cookie], I relax a lot better in the evening, sleep better.\"\r\n\r\n**Kevin Kwok:**\r\n\"A few years ago, there was really nothing for Parkinson's [disease]. I think Kevin [Krejci] and I represent a group of folks who say, we're going to fight back. I feel great 10 years into Parkinson's. You exercise and you come back rejuvenated, so it feeds on itself. It all stems from the ability to get up and move. \r\n\r\nFor us, exercise is medicine. The ability to move, to do high-intensity workouts. … One of the things with Parkinson's, it's not just a movement disorder; it's also a psychological disorder. It comes with fatigue, apathy, depression. And you just have to bust out of that. For me, the ability to sleep well and removing the apathy so you can show up and then move with freedom, this is all part of our daily medication. And so, something [like Moonman's Mistress] that helps us get back out here and move is sacred.\"\r\n\r\nRELATED: [6 STRENGTHENING MOVES FOR PARKINSON'S DISEASE PATIENTS](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a5f84c48425e40008273a2a/6-strengthening-moves-for-parkinsons-disease-patients)\r\n\r\n**Hank Frost:**\r\n\"As an athlete, professional boxer and personal trainer, my body goes through a lot of stress, so I've got to get that recovery. Recovery is key. I was kinda iffy about [cannabis], but I tried the [Moonman's Mistress CBD] product and felt a difference. I use CBD instead of taking ibuprofen or aspirin. It really helps with the pain and inflammation, and also sleep too. I love my sleep. That's how your body repairs and recharges. And then you're good for the next day.\"\r\n\r\n![Burn and baked goody bag](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/articles-5a7493daf24d1300077ccb2a-2bfab4e1-bbc4-442e-84a7-841db2083d76/original.jpg)\r\n\r\nIn the spirit of helping attendees repair and recharge post-workout, Moonman's Mistress handed out goody bags containing its CBD star cluster superfood cookies; superfood trail-mix cookies from [BellyWell Kitchen](http://bellywellkitchen.com/)—Liz and Jamel's non-cannabis, paleo baking company; Loki CBD pain salve and Dirt Ninja CBD capsules.\r\n\r\nJamel, who hopes to run a few more Burn and Baked events this year with the next one targeted for spring in L.A., says that Moonman's Mistress is all about health and wellness: \"We live it. We breathe it. This is our lifestyle. … We continue to advocate for patients and for responsible [cannabis] consumers looking for health benefits.\"\r\n\r\nMain photo credit: Mike Rosati\r\n\r\nIf you're new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post.
