Can Cannabis Help?","slug":"women's-health-conditions-are-overlooked-by-mainstream-healthcare.-can-cannabis-help","content":"Women disproportionately suffer from anxiety, depression, fibromyalgia, and migraines. We also suffer from conditions that men do not experience, such as PMS and menopause. When looking at the pharmaceutical and traditional medicinal options available to women, they are woefully inadequate. \n\nThis is because clinical trials for new drug development are heavily skewed towards male biology, meaning most drugs are more effective or designed for men. Due to the gender gap in clinical trials, women are also far more likely to suffer the adverse side effects of medications. \n\n### Women's Health is Overlooked \n[Research](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2020/08/200812161318.htm) from the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Chicago suggests this is because drug dosages are largely based on clinical trials conducted on men. The theory of the one-size-fits-all approach doesn't work when it comes to drug discovery and development. \n\nIrving Zucker, a professor emeritus of psychology and of integrative biology at UC Berkeley, says, \"For decades, women have been excluded from clinical drug trials based, in part, on unfounded concerns that female hormone fluctuations render women difficult to study.\"\n\nTo complicate matters, medical professionals often downplay women's health issues, and female health problems are vastly under-researched. One school of thought believes that the problem exists because funding and research panels have historically been male-dominated. \n\nBut overall, female reproductive health, among other conditions, are under-addressed. A good example is endometriosis; although this condition affects 1 in 10 women, the same number as diabetes, it has a fraction of research funding. When we look at the bigger picture, medicinal options for female-focused care is limited if not anitquated. Amy Miller, Ph.D. and CEO of the [Society for Women's Health Research](https://nypost.com/2019/08/05/medicine-ignored-womens-health-for-years-thats-finally-changing/) says, \"Women's health has pretty much been ignored in biomedical pathology for our entire human history.\"\n\n### Cannabis as a Natural Medicine \n\nAlthough women's health issues have been overlooked by mainstream drug discovery and development, medical cannabis is a natural solution that helps millions of women feel better. Cannabis is not only a natural anti-inflammatory, for many people, it can help relieve anxiety, depression and improve the overall quality of sleep. \n\nIt has also proven effective for women suffering from PMS, whether it be body aches or menstrual cramping, to those feeling the general malaise and difficulties of transitioning into menopause. Dr. Julie Holland, a psychopharmacology specialist and well-known author of the book [Moody Bitches](https://www.amazon.com/Moody-Bitches-Taking-Missing-Having/dp/0143107909) says, \n\n\"In general, women are much more likely to be diagnosed with depression and anxiety than men, which means they are being prescribed antidepressants more than men are. Cannabis can potentially help with many symptoms that women who take antidepressants (as well as those who don’t) experience—including irritability, insomnia, depression, and anxiety.\"\n\nDr. Holland goes on to explain that the reason cannabis is so effective is due to its interaction with our body's endocannabinoid system. She says, \n\"Stress and inflammation are inextricably linked, and the key to combating both lies in a system called the endocannabinoid system, which is made of cannabis receptors throughout the body and internal cannabis-like molecules. \n\nWhen stress nearly knocks you overboard, your internal cannabinoid system helps to right the ship....cannabinoids (from cannabis) tamp down inflammation and reactivity in the body, maintaining your metabolism, immune functioning, learning and growing processes. The endocannabinoid system is involved in nearly everything we do: eating, sleeping, exercising, having sex, giving birth, and nursing.\"\n\nBelow we list five conditions where cannabis may be an effective remedy or complement to traditional pharmaceuticals and western intervention.\n\n### Fibromyalgia\n\n[Fibromyalgia](https://hellomd.com/articles/alternative-and-emerging-treatments-for-fibromyalgia-subheading:-could-one-of-them-work-for-you/) is a complex, irritating, and difficult condition with few medical answers. It affects over four million adults, and primarily women. The disease is mainly associated with widespread pain across the body, including muscles, tendons, and tissues. Unfortunately, there is no resolution as to why fibromyalgia happens to some and not others; however, it is linked to acute stress.\n\nIn a 2011 study, the majority of participants found that their [fibromyalgia symptoms became measurably more tolerable](https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0018440) after taking cannabis. Not only did participants feel their pain symptoms decreased, but they also noted improvements in their quality of life. It's believed that THC, CBD and numerous other cannabinoids help to bolster a flagging endocannabinoid system, reestablishing homeostasis within the body.\n\n### Anxiety\nDuring this past pandemic year, [four out of ten American adults](https://www.kff.org/coronavirus-covid-19/issue-brief/the-implications-of-covid-19-for-mental-health-and-substance-use/#:~:text=During%20the%20pandemic%2C%20about%204,June%202019%20Figure%201) reported having symptoms of anxiety. That’s a fourfold increase from 2019 when just one in ten Americans were experiencing those symptoms. [Anxiety](https://hellomd.com/articles/can-cannabis-decrease-social-anxiety-as-the-covid-pandemic-winds-down/) is one of the most common mental disorders and can be incredibly debilitating.\n\nCBD is one of the most well-known cannabinoids within the cannabis sativa plant. It’s non-intoxicating, which means you will not feel the typical high associated with THC. CBD is ideal for those who suffer from anxiety as it can help to balance mood and support the production of brain chemicals that produce feelings of calm and well-being.\n\nCBD also supports the activity of other neurotransmitters that can quell the intensity of anxiety. Serotonin is a well-known “feel good” chemical that helps us \"feel good\". Meanwhile, CBD excites thethe brain’s serotonin receptors, which allows the brain’s natural production of serotonin and encourages its mood-boosting effects.\n\n### Migraines\n\n[Migraines](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-does-cannabis-work-to-relieve-migraines/) can be excruciating. The symptoms may include a throbbing headache, nausea and a heightened sensitivity to sensory stimuli like light, sounds, flavors, smells or touch. You may even experience an aura, a visual experience caused by migraine pain which may partially or fully block vision for some time.\n\nSimilar to fibromyalgia, the endocannabinoid system may play a role in migraines. An endocannabinoid deficiency may actually be one of the primary reasons migraines occur in the first place.Generally, the most effective cannabis products for migraines are typically high in CBD.\n\nThat said, everyone has a unique endocannabinoid system and biochemistry—so experimentation is necessary and a high ratio of CBD to THC may work best or for many, a one to one ratio of CBD to THC works best for chronic pain.\n\n### PMS\n[PMS or premenstrual syndrome](https://hellomd.com/articles/womens-health-and-marijuana-pms-dysmenorrhea-and-menopause/) encompasses a wide range of unpleasant symptoms including: bloating, fatigue, headaches, cramping, lower back pain, breast swelling and tenderness, constipation, diarrhea, and change in mood. These symptoms can start two weeks before your menstrual period or a few days leading up to it. Although the cause of PMS is unknown it is believed to be linked to the hormonal fluctuations that occur during a woman's cycle.\n\nMany women feel the effects of PMS during their lifetime, and some have a more severe form, PMDD—premenstrual dysphoric disorder, which [affects 3% to 8% of women during menstrual years](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24161307). PMDD wreaks havoc on women's lives, and can in some cases, leads to suicidal ideation.\n\nThere are no set cannabis dosages to alleviate PMS symptoms, but a good place to start is with a high CBD to THC ratio, due to CBD’s anti-inflammatory and mood-balancing properties. THC can help some women alleviate the physical pain associated with PMS, especially with cramping. When pain is acute vaping, or smoking flower, can help  \n\n### Menopause\nPeri menopause, or the phase of life that happens just before a woman hits menopause, and menopause, is a normal phase of life during a woman's life. This transition, which in the past was somewhat taboo,  signals the end of reproductive years. But in recent years, to many women, it signals not only a new chapter but a new lease on life.\n\nUnfortunately, the fluctuation of hormones during this time can cause some unwanted side effects such as mood swings, hot flashes, night sweats, disregulated sleep, thinning hair, changes in muscle tone, sexual dysfunction, and more.\n\nMany women turn to cannabis during this transition for the mood-regulating, and anti-inflammatory benefits mentioned earlier. But cannabis has something additional to offer: phytoestrogens. This plant-based hormone is similar to human estrogen in many ways and can help to make up for the estrogen dip experienced during perimenopause and menopause. If you’re ready to give cannabis and its hit of phytoestrogens a whirl, you may consider trying cannabis strains containing higher CBD ratios to THC.\n\nDr. Julie Holland believes cannabis is a powerful aid for women entering, or within, menopause, \"CBD can help with anxiety and THC can help with mood swings, irritability, and low resilience (your ability to handle stress).\"","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.5037593984962405,"src":"/static/7483fc3e839c9b5e47e7a8a6db15e12e/ee604/e7b1d61922fa784eb6de66e879798f6b.png","srcSet":"/static/7483fc3e839c9b5e47e7a8a6db15e12e/69585/e7b1d61922fa784eb6de66e879798f6b.png 200w,\n/static/7483fc3e839c9b5e47e7a8a6db15e12e/497c6/e7b1d61922fa784eb6de66e879798f6b.png 400w,\n/static/7483fc3e839c9b5e47e7a8a6db15e12e/ee604/e7b1d61922fa784eb6de66e879798f6b.png 800w,\n/static/7483fc3e839c9b5e47e7a8a6db15e12e/f3583/e7b1d61922fa784eb6de66e879798f6b.png 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/7483fc3e839c9b5e47e7a8a6db15e12e/58556/e7b1d61922fa784eb6de66e879798f6b.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/7483fc3e839c9b5e47e7a8a6db15e12e/61e93/e7b1d61922fa784eb6de66e879798f6b.webp 200w,\n/static/7483fc3e839c9b5e47e7a8a6db15e12e/1f5c5/e7b1d61922fa784eb6de66e879798f6b.webp 400w,\n/static/7483fc3e839c9b5e47e7a8a6db15e12e/58556/e7b1d61922fa784eb6de66e879798f6b.webp 800w,\n/static/7483fc3e839c9b5e47e7a8a6db15e12e/99238/e7b1d61922fa784eb6de66e879798f6b.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3598-markdown","title":"Alternative and Emerging Treatments for Fibromyalgia - Could One Work for You?","slug":"alternative-and-emerging-treatments-for-fibromyalgia-could-one-work-for-you","content":"### What is Fibromyalgia?\n\nEven though up to [3% of the world’s population experiences fibromyalgia,](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41584-020-00506-w) effective treatment can be maddeningly hard to find. If you’re familiar with the fibromyalgia and the basics of treatment, you may want to go straight to reading about <alternative and emerging therapies for those living with fibromyalgia>  If you have recently been diagnosed or [suspect you have fibromyalgia.](http://images.slideplayer.com/15/4866911/slides/slide_7.jpg) Keep reading. The next few paragraphs can give you a basic lay of the land. \n\nFibromyalgia (FM) is different for everyone, but common symptoms can include [chronic widespread pain,](https://hellomd.com/articles/8-natural-ways-to-combat-chronic-pain) fatigue, sleep alterations, autonomic disturbances, cognitive dysfunction, hypersensitivity to external stimuli, somatic symptoms, and occasionally even psychiatric disorders. Because there is a wide range of possible symptoms and a vexing lack of biomarkers, patients may see a variety of specialists and be handed conflicting opinions before being given a fibromyalgia diagnosis. When that long, frustrating journey ends, another begins: that of finding effective relief.\n\nBecause the root cause of fibromyalgia remains unknown, treatment consists of [individualized and symptom-based plans that draw on a combination of medications and self-care strategies.](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/fibromyalgia/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20354785)  \n\nCommon medications include over-the-counter pain relievers like Tylenol and Alieve, antidepressants like Cymbalta and Savella which can help with pain and fatigue, and anti-seizure drugs like Neurontin which can help with certain specific types of pain. \n\nTypical self-care techniques include talk therapy (CBT) which can help with pain and stress management. They may also include physical and occupational therapies focused on reducing physical stress and pain in the body. \n\nFor many, these options leave much to be desired. In fact, a [review of more than 224 clinical trials published in the  Journal of the American Medical Association](https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/article-abstract/2772354) concluded that “the effectiveness of most therapies for fibromyalgia was not supported.” According to this 2021 study, “Strong evidence supported only cognitive behavioral therapy for pain, as well as antidepressants and central nervous system depressants for pain and quality of life, but these associations were small.” When conventional treatment yields such lackluster results, it’s natural to want to supplement them with alternative and even experimental therapies. \n\n### Alternative and Emerging Therapies for Those Living With Fibromyalgia \n\n### Medical Cannabis\n[Recent study](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29461346/) shows that medical cannabis can offer relief from the pain, anxiety, sleeplessness and tension of fibromyalgia with minimal adverse side effects. If you are of age and live in a state where adult-use marijuana is legal, you’ll be able to buy medical cannabis easily at a dispensary near you. In states where marijuana is legal only for medical use, you will need a medical card or other documentation from your doctor to purchase medical cannabis. \n\nIf you’ve experienced marijuana at some point in your life, then you have an idea of what to expect from medical cannabis. Though it is generally given more rigorous testing for purity and potency than recreational cannabis, it is the same plant.\n\nMedical cannabis, like recreational cannabis, contains both [THC (the chemicals that make you feel high)](https://hellomd.com/articles/is-more-thc-better-when-it-comes-to-cannabis-strains) and [CBD (the cannabinoid that help you relax, release tension, manage pain and sleep well).](https://hellomd.com/articles/what-is-cbd-and-how-can-it-help-me) Almost all cannabis is higher in THC than CBD though ratios will vary from strain to strain and product to product.\n\nMedical practitioners may suggest products with a 1:1 ratio of THC to CBD to manage pain. If you’d rather lessen the high you can look for products that are higher in CBD than THC or skip the high altogether with products that contain only CBD. Though, it is worth noting that most patients with chronic pain find that at least some THC is helpful in getting optimal relief. The best way to know what works for you is to try a few options and take note of the results. There are lots of ways to try it.\n\nMedical cannabis can be [consumed](https://hellomd.com/articles/5-ways-other-than-smoking-flower-to-consume-marijuana) as whole plant preparations, edibles, tinctures, gel caps, topicals and more. The budtenders at your dispensary can talk you through your options and help you find products that may suit your needs, although asking a medical cannabis doctor is always preferred. But it’s a good idea for you to [do a little research](https://hellomd.com/articles/3-popular-questions-about-marijuana-and-fibromyalgia-answered) before you go. If you're new to cannabis, always start with a low amount of THC, and go slow, as they say.\n\nOne of your best resources may well be [others who use medical cannabis to manage their fibromyalgia symptoms.](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-cannabis-eases-my-fibromyalgia-symptoms) If you go to a support group and know [people who use medical cannabis,](https://hellomd.com/articles/fibromyalgia-neuropathy-and-cannabis-adrions-success-story) ask them about their experience. Explore websites, newsletters, blogs and social media groups for first hand experiences with medical cannabis. What worked for others, might work for you too!\n\n### Psychedelics \nIn recent years psychedelics like [psilocybin](https://www.thecut.com/2016/12/psilocybin-research-looks-very-exciting.html) and MDMA (ecstasy) have been used to treat depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other psychiatric disorders. They do this by overriding and rewiring neural networks associated with symptoms like chronic pain.  If you can imagine chronic pain as a sound or video loop, then you can visualize psychedelics as a force that disrupts the loop. For fibromyalgia patients, this translates as a breaking cycle of chronic pain, at least for periods of time.\n\nA [recent article in Practical Pain Management](https://www.practicalpainmanagement.com/treatments/psychological/psychedelics-chronic-pain-it-time) makes that point that though “clinical evidence for the use of psychedelic substances in chronic pain is limited, studies and case reports over the past 50 years have shown potential benefits in cancer pain, phantom limb pain, and cluster headache” which have symptoms and features in common with chronic pain and hold promise for those with fibromyalgia. \n\nIs an effective treatment for chronic pain waiting at the end of the next psychedelics study?  It’s early to tell, but early studies hint that there is potential here. It will be an exciting field to watch in the coming months and years. \n\n### Whole Body Cryotherapy\nA 2021 [article published in Advances in Rhumetology](https://advancesinrheumatology.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s42358-020-00159-z) claims Whole Body Cryotherapy (Yes, those freezing tanks popping up at all the local gyms, sports rehabilitation centers and spas) is “a fast acting and effective treatment for Fibromyalgia.” According to their study, participants who experienced Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC) saw a significant reduction in pain. When it comes to fibromyalgia treatment, that’s the name of the game.\n\nCryotherapy may sound like a space-age technology, but chances are, you’ve already experienced it in some form. Ever put an ice pack on a swollen ankle? That’s cryotherapy!  It works by reducing blood flow to the injured area. This reduces inflammation, swelling and the pain they cause. The ice pack also suppresses nerve activity which can temporarily relieve pain. \n\nAdvocates of WBC claim that it benefits everything from sports injuries to Alzheimer’s Disease. (The FDA, on the other hand, finds [no evidence that it benefits anything at all.)](https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/whole-body-cryotherapy-wbc-cool-trend-lacks-evidence-poses-risks) [Empirical evidence](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3956737/) however, demonstrates that WBC can relieve whole body pain, at least temporarily. According to [an article in the Journal Of Sports Medicine](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3956737/) it does it by suppressing nerve activity, pretty much the same way your trusty ice pack did.\n\nIf you’re interested in incorporating WCB into your treatment plan, it won’t be difficult to find. WBC is widely available in gyms, sports rehabilitation facilities and spas. Experiences vary from place to place, but they generally consist of being in an ultra-cold (minus 200 - minus 300 Fahrenheit) enclosure for 2-4 minutes with very little protective clothing. If the cold sounds unappealing, here’s a warmer option to consider.\n\n### Infrared saunas\nFor centuries people have enjoyed the pain-relieving, endorphin-releasing [benefits of a little time in the sauna.](https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/article/biohacking-articles/science-of-sauna/) Today you can enjoy the same benefits, but without all that hot, dry air. Infrared saunas are here and they’re a game-changer for those with chronic pain,\n\nLike traditional saunas, infrared saunas deliver therapeutic heat to the body. Unlike traditional saunas, infrared saunas light to create heat directly in the body while the air around you remains cool. This makes infrared saunas appealing to those who can’t tolerate the extreme heat of traditional saunas.\n\n[The Mayo Clinic,](https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/consumer-health/expert-answers/infrared-sauna/faq-20057954) reports that there is still insufficient study to determine if infrared saunas benefit those with chronic pain. “On the other hand,” they say, “no adverse effects have been reported with infrared saunas. So if you're considering trying a sauna for relaxation, an infrared sauna might be an option.”\n\nThere may be a lack of medical study in support of infrared saunas as therapy for chronic pain, but there is no lack of positive testimonials. Among the many singing their praises is Lady Gaga, who has been [very public about her struggles with fibromyalgia.](https://www.harpersbazaar.com/celebrity/latest/a30414700/lady-gaga-oprah-interview-psychotic-break-chronic-illness/) \n\nIn a [recent Instagram post](https://www.instagram.com/p/BM-GxxBBY_n/?utm_source=ig_embed) she wrote,”When my body goes into a spasm one thing I find really helps is infrared sauna. I've invested in one. They come in a large box form as well as a low coffin-like form and even some like electric blankets! You can also look around your community for a infrared sauna parlor or homeopathic center that has one.I combine this treatment with marley silver emergency blankets (seen in the photo) that trap in the heat and are very cheap, reusable and effective for detox as well as weight loss!\n\nIn order to not overheat my system and cause more inflammation Ifollow this with either a VERY cold bath, ice bath (if u can stand it, it's worth it) or the most environmentally savvy way is to keep many reusable cold packs in the freezer ( or frozen peas' n carrots'!) and pack them around the body in all areas of pain. Hope this helps some of you, it helps me to keep doing my passion, job and the things I love even on days when I feel like I can't get out of bed.”\n\nIf you’re interested in giving Gaga’s treatment a try, reach out to a local facility and schedule some time in their infrared sauna. If you find that it works for you, consider investing in a package of appointments, an [infrared blanket](https://wwd.com/shop/shop-beauty/best-infrared-blankets-1234672508/) or even a sauna of your own!  \n\n### Massage Therapy\nFor many years massage therapy has proven to be an effective component of fibromyalgia treatment plans. It’s famous for [decreasing stress hormones and raising serotonin levels which supports better sleep, improved mood and an overall sense of well being:](https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/stress-management/in-depth/massage/art-20045743) all things in short supply when fibromyalgia enters the picture.\n\nThere are many massage styles that have been particularly helpful to those living with FM.  Among them are swedish massage, hot stone therapy, passive stretching, sports massage, trigger point massage and myofascial release. All of these options have potential, but the last two have gotten a little extra attention in recent years.\n\n### Trigger Point Massage\nTrigger points are painful areas (or knots) located within the muscles. [Trigger point massage](https://health.clevelandclinic.org/knots-in-your-neck-how-to-try-a-trigger-point-massage-to-release-them/) uses finger pressure to deactivate these trigger points which can lessen pain over time.  Massage therapists report that people with fibromyalgia seem to have more trigger points than those without.  This leads them to believe that this style of massage may be particularly beneficial in treating all over body pain experienced by those with Fibromyalgia. Patient experiences seem to support this.\n\n### Myofascial Release\nThis style of massage applies gentle, sustained pressure onto connective tissues with the goal of relieving pain and restoring motion. Developed for people living with myofascial pain syndrome, this treatment has been used by massage therapists, chiropractors and physical therapists to help those with chronic headaches, [muscular pain](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/back-pain/expert-answers/myofascial-release/faq-20058136) and even fibromyalgia.\n\n A study published in the International [Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health](https://doi.org/10.3390/ijerph17124611) supports this connection. Their study concluded that only 15 minutes of manual massage focusing on connective tissues on the back of the neck “decreased the patients’ perception of pain, muscle fatigue, and the state of tension-anxiety” in women with fibromyalgia. \n\nTo get started, search for licensed massage therapists in your area. Look for therapists who are connected with clinics, mention treatment of fibromyalgia or list massage techniques that pique your curiosity. Read the reviews, speak to the therapist about your needs, make an appointment and give them a try!\n\n### Stay Curious\nWhile there is so much we still don’t know about fibromyalgia’s cause and cure, there is one thing we do know: patients and practitioners are searching tirelessly for answers. It affects over four million adults, comprising mostly women. The condition is most often associated with large-scale body pain in muscles, tissues and tendons. People describe fibromyalgia pain as ranging from a dull ache on a good day to pain that becomes extremely severe, affecting all aspects of life.\n\nThere’s growing evidence that cannabidiol (CBD), one of the hundreds of chemical compounds found in cannabis and hemp may help bolster the weakened endocannabinoid systems (ECS) of fibromyalgia sufferers.\n\nHow can it do this? By addressing an associated condition known as clinical endocannabinoid deficiency (CED). \n\n### What Is Fibromyalgia? \n\nThe Centers for Disease Control describe fibromyalgia as “[a condition that causes widespread pain all over the body](https://www.cdc.gov/arthritis/basics/fibromyalgia.htm).” \n\nThe [causes of fibromyalgia](https://med.stanford.edu/pain/about-chronic-pain/fibromyalgia.html) remain elusive to researchers. For years, suffering patients have begged doctors to develop a clear diagnosis. No specific diagnostic tools have conclusively identified why people develop the condition. Fibromyalgia seems to be related to stress, and people with disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis appear to be at greater risk of developing it. \n\nFolks often report [fibromyalgia pain that often targets over a dozen very specific trigger points](https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/medicine-and-dentistry/fibromyalgia) on the body, including areas like:\n\n* Near the second rib space\n* The upper quadrants of the glutes \n* The inner fat pad of the knee \n\nSleep disturbances and intestinal imbalances are common. One of the most vexing aspects of fibromyalgia is that a sufferer’s sensitivity to pain is often heightened as compared to healthy people. Once diagnosed, standard treatment options are few and far between.\n\n### What Is Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency?\n\nAs many cannabis consumers may already know, the body’s ECS is a relatively recent area of study for scientists and researchers. The ECS, with receptors located throughout the body, is responsible for ensuring healthy signaling between those receptors and your body’s endocannabinoids—cannabinoids the body itself makes. \n\nThe “lock and key” relationship between the receptors and endocannabinoids results in neurotransmission—communication at the cellular level that’s essential to how your body deals with and handles nearly every function, such as:\n\n* Pain\n* Inflammation\n* Sleep\n* Appetite\n* Memory\n\nScientists know that deficiencies in certain neurotransmitters can make a person more susceptible to Alzheimer’s disease or depression. More recently, scientists have begun to focus on whether [endocannabinoid deficiencies play a role in disease processes](https://wholefoodsmagazine.com/supplements/features-supplements/phytocannabinoids-25-things-to-know-now/). \n\nAccording to a 2016 study, the lack of an endocannabinoid “tone,” or what’s defined as [clinical endocannabinoid deficiency, is seen in people with](https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/full/10.1089/can.2016.0009):\n\n* Fibromyalgia\n* Migraines \n* Irritable bowel syndrome\n\nRELATED: [CBD MAY HELP RELIVE IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME](https://hellomd.com/articles/cbd-may-help-relieve-irritable-bowel-syndrome/)\n\nThe exciting news is that folks can ease some of the symptoms of these conditions by supplementing their ECS with cannabis.\n\n### Can Cannabis Improve Fibromyalgia Symptoms? \n\nThere are few single studies specifically targeting fibromyalgia sufferers who are cannabis consumers. However, in a 2011 study, the majority of participants found that their [fibromyalgia symptoms became measurably more tolerable](https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0018440) after taking cannabis. This bolsters the theory that once the body’s endocannabinoid deficiencies are addressed, pain and inflammation tend to decrease. \n\nNot only did participants feel their pain symptoms decreased, but they also noted improvements in their quality of life.\n\nConversely, a 2016 study on fibromyalgia patients found that [Nabilone, a synthetic form of cannabis, had little to no effect on patient’s pain levels](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321501.php).\n\n### CBD May Help With Pain & Reduce Endocannabinoid Deficiencies\n\nWhat wide-ranging cannabis pain studies seem to agree on is that cannabis helps with inflammation and pain—whether the pain comes from a car accident or an autoimmune disorder. \n\nNot everyone can tolerate the psychoactive effects of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). But fortunately, the ECS responds favorably to CBD, the cannabinoid that doesn’t make you feel high like THC can. \n\nA 2018 study from Canada’s McGill University found that the [low doses of CBD they gave to animals effectively decreased both pain and anxiety](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/10/181024163625.htm). \n\n\"Our findings elucidate the mechanism of action of CBD and show that it can be used as medicine without the dangerous side effects of the THC,\" notes Dr. Gabriella Gobbi, Professor of Psychiatry at the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University. \n\nThis landmark study indicates that it’s possible for those wanting to address pain and endocannabinoid deficiencies to do so with CBD, bypassing some of the side effects associated with THC.\n\n### Balancing Your Endocannabinoid System With CBD\n\nThe wonderful news about CBD is that when you buy it from reputable sources, it’s unlikely to produce any side effects or interact unfavorably with other medications. \n\nThe [mainstreaming of CBD](https://www.consumerreports.org/cbd/cbd-goes-mainstream/) means that products are undergoing more rigorous testing. And for those living in states where cannabis is already legal, CBD products have undergone tests that are far stricter than those imposed on the supplement industry. \n\nEven the Arthritis Foundation has created [protocols for those with fibromyalgia who wish to try CBD](https://www.arthritis.org/living-with-arthritis/treatments/natural/supplements-herbs/cannabidiol-oil.php). This helpful guide includes common-sense recommendations, particularly for first-time medical cannabis patients.\n\n[Anecdotal evidence from grateful CBD consumers](https://www.phillyvoice.com/does-cbd-work-benefits-cannabidiol-oil-philly-marijuana/) continues to drive the conversation about the health benefits of taking CBD to help address complex conditions like fibromyalgia.\n\nThe media and researchers are completely correct to note that “more studies are needed.” But there are virtually no studies that point to any danger or risk in trying out a CBD regime to balance your endocannabinoid system, and thus, improve your overall health and well-being. \n\n\n### Tips for Fibromyalgia Sufferers Who Are New to CBD \n\nIf you’re considering taking CBD for the first time, here are a few pointers to keep in mind:\n\n* Consult with your doctor or a cannabis-friendly health practitioner before you take anything.\n* Buy your medicine from a reputable source. Don’t be afraid to ask where the hemp was grown or for lab tests to make sure the product is as advertised. \n* Avoid buying CBD from the drugstore, the black market or even online retailers, like Amazon, that don’t specialize in cannabis.\n* Enlist the support of the online community, a dispensary/delivery service employee or other trusted expert to answer questions and help you with your purchases.\n* Start with a small dose. \n* When first trying CBD, take it in the evening at home, in case it makes you feel drowsy or relaxed.\n* Keep a journal and record your observations.\n* Feel free to increase your dose if you feel no positive effects. \n* It will take some time to balance your ECS with CBD, so be patient and take a CBD product regularly for at least three or four weeks before evaluating its efficacy. \n* Try several types of consumption methods to find the best one for you:\n * A [CBD topical cream](https://www.hellolift.com/products?category=Topicals)\n for sore joints\n * A [CBD edible](https://www.hellolift.com/products?category=Edibles)\n product for sleep\n * A [CBD tincture](https://www.hellolift.com/products?category=Tinctures) for quicker-acting pain relief\n\nPhoto credit: loreanto/Shutterstock.com\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? Sufferers are plagued with widespread chronic pain. But with no visible signs of illness, it’s easy for those around them to discount or doubt that there’s a problem. Many go years without the correct diagnosis, and even then, the treatment options are limited and often ineffective. \n\nBut cannabis provides some hope in this painful situation. Many fibromyalgia sufferers, myself included, have found that marijuana provides significant relief of their symptoms, and helps them lead a more functional life. Now the science is starting to catch up with these patient reports—and shows that cannabis *is* an effective treatment option for fibromyalgia. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\n### Fibromyalgia Frustrations \n\nFibromyalgia is one of the most common chronic pain conditions, [affecting around 10 million people in the U.S. alone](http://www.fmaware.org/about-fibromyalgia/prevalence/). While men and women both suffer from the condition, it’s most common in women, who make up 75–90% of fibromyalgia sufferers. \n\nFor those of us with this disorder, life can be a painful place. Characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fibromyalgia patients like myself, have [significantly heightened sensitivity to pain, and tend to feel constantly sore and achy throughout their body](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/fibromyalgia/symptoms-causes/syc-20354780). \n\nAdditionally, fibromyalgia comes with other symptoms that affect functionality, such as:\n\n* Fatigue\n* Tension headaches\n* TMJ\n* Issues with sleep \n* Memory problems\n* Depression \n* Anxiety\n\nWhile scientists aren’t quite sure how or why fibromyalgia occurs, they believe that it has to do with how the brain processes pain signals. In fibromyalgia patients, these signals are amplified, leading to intensified responses to painful stimuli and a general sensation of discomfort even when no painful stimuli are present. \n\nWhile researchers say that there’s a genetic component, with fibromyalgia running in families, symptoms can sometimes begin after a physical trauma, surgery, infection or significant psychological stress. In other cases, symptoms accumulate gradually over time without a single triggering event. \n\nRegardless, there’s no known cure for the condition. But some find improvement with lifestyle changes like:\n\n* Certain medications\n* Exercise\n* Dietary overhauls\n* Stress-reduction measures like meditation and body-focused mindfulness\n\nUnfortunately, the options for medications, such as Lyrica and Cymbalta, aren’t great. These pharmaceuticals have relatively low levels of efficacy and some serious negative side effects such as fatigue, nausea and tremors. \n\n### My Fibromyalgia Story \n\nThankfully, cannabis can help. I know because it helps me with my fibromyalgia every day. \nFirst diagnosed in my early 20s, I always had extra pain, but was having a hard time coping with it as I transitioned into adult life. \n\nWith the widespread discomfort, fatigue and anxiety, college life was challenging. I couldn’t sleep; I was in constant pain; and I was having a hard time focusing and concentrating when doing schoolwork. I was so sick that I had to take time off from school. I simply couldn’t function and began to seriously contemplate applying for disability. It wasn’t the life I had imagined for myself, but it seemed like my most likely outcome. \n\nThe doctors prescribed a long line of medications to try. I don’t remember them all, but I did try the two most common medications for fibromyalgia. First, there was Lyrica, but it left me so mentally confused that I could no longer read. I simply couldn’t stay focused on the words long enough to complete a sentence. \n\nThen there was Cymbalta, which seemed to help a little at first, but then stopped working after only one year. It left me addicted to the medication and suffering from its negative side effects, which only compounded my problems. \n\nThen I tried cannabis. For the first time in my life I experienced what it was like to be without the widespread pain. I could finally move around with ease. I could think clearly. I could sleep. I could live my life. It felt like a miracle, as I began to function better day by day. \n\nI went back to school and finished my Ph.D. program. I was able to jump into the workforce and create a career that I love. And 10 years later, the miracle hasn’t ended. I still take cannabis every day, and it continues to provide the relief that I need to live my life. \n\n### Studies Show Cannabis Can Help Fibromyalgia Sufferers \n\nAs it turns out, I’m not the only one who has experienced this marijuana miracle. Researchers are starting to look at cannabis as a fibromyalgia treatment and are seeing incredible results. \n\nFor one thing, scientists are starting to notice what I did: Cannabis is much more effective than the pharmaceutical options are. One study of 1,300 people with fibromyalgia conducted by the National Pain Foundation showed that [cannabis is effective at treating fibromyalgia](http://nationalpainreport.com/marijuana-rated-most-effective-for-treating-fibromyalgia-8823638.html)—and much more so than the other medical options are. \n\nOf the respondents in the study, 62% reported that cannabis was very effective at relieving their symptoms while 33% said it helped them a little; only 5% said it didn’t help at all. \n\nBut with doctor-prescribed pharmaceuticals, the results were far less favorable. Only 10% said that Lyrica was very effective, with 61% saying it didn’t help at all. Cymbalta was only considered very effective by 8% of respondents, with 60% reporting no positive effect at all.\n\nRELATED: [3 POPULAR QUESTIONS ABOUT MARIJUANA & FIBROMYALGIA ANSWERED](https://hellomd.com/articles/3-popular-questions-about-marijuana-and-fibromyalgia-answered/)\n\nIn a more recent study, scientists treated a group of fibromyalgia patients with marijuana and found that [all participants reported significant improvement in every tested parameter](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29461346). Half of the patients were able to stop taking any other medications for fibromyalgia. And only 30% experienced any negative side effects—but these were all reported to be very mild.\n\nThe researchers concluded that cannabis had significant favorable effects for patients with few adverse effects. \n\nA similar study found positive results as well. [After only two hours of cannabis use, patients reported](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21533029): \n\n* Statistically significant reduction of pain and stiffness\n* Enhancement of relaxation\n* An increase in sleepiness \n* Increased feelings of well-being\n* Improved mental health \n\nWhile the reliability of these results could be improved by conducting larger, double-blind studies, all of these studies had overwhelmingly positive results pointing towards marijuana’s efficacy for fibromyalgia. If you’re suffering from this difficult-to-live-with condition, cannabis could be the best option for you. \n\n### Using Marijuana to Help Treat Fibromyalgia\n \nThere are lots of options when it comes to taking marijuana for fibromyalgia symptoms, because many different methods and types of cannabis can help with widespread pain. But the different options can help in different ways, so it’s good to understand their potential uses. \n\n[Smoking](https://hellomd.com/tag/thc/) or [vaping](https://hellomd.com/tag/vaporizer/) cannabis are both effective options if you need immediate relief. Their quick-acting effects can provide respite within minutes, easing pain and tension while uplifting mood. \n\nIf you’re not interested in inhaled methods, sublingual marijuana options like [tinctures or sprays](https://hellomd.com/tag/tincture/) can provide a similar quick- acting effect. The downside is that these methods don’t last as long, so you may need to keep using them every two to three hours to maintain pain relief. \n\nFor longer-lasting relief, look to marijuana [edibles](https://hellomd.com/tag/edible/). These tasty options stay in your system longer, so you can go four to six hours without taking another dose. But edibles take much longer to start working (sometimes up to two hours), so aren’t as ideal when you need pain relief right away. \n\nI usually go for a combination of inhaled or sublingual and edible methods. I keep a consistent dose of edible cannabis in my system to maintain pain relief, and I use inhaled methods to fill in the gaps when I’m experiencing more intense pain or need pain relief right away. \n\nOccasionally, topicals are nice as well—providing quick relief to any area where it’s applied. While this can be great if you have a particular area that needs attention, it’s not very practical for treating the widespread pain of fibromyalgia, because you need to apply it to the entire body. \n\nIf you’re using a lotion or cream, this would be time-consuming and inefficient. Still, one topical option works well: [bath salts and bath bombs](https://www.hellomd.com/products/5b6e1ad196120c00012c699a/13-releaf-soak). It’s thought that around 10 million people in the U.S. live with fibromyalgia, which can manifest in stiffness and pain, lethargy and difficulty with memory. Many times, fibromyalgia is accompanied by other painful conditions like migraines and irritable bowel syndrome. \n\nIt’s not known exactly what causes fibromyalgia, but researchers are now looking into the brain. Some think that the constant [nerve stimulation makes the brains of fibromyalgia patients change and increase pain signals](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/fibromyalgia/symptoms-causes/syc-20354780). Other researchers think that fibromyalgia sufferers have more blood flow to the parts of the brain that deal with pain signals and [less blood flow to the parts that regulate pain responses](https://www.spineuniverse.com/conditions/fibromyalgia/fibromyalgia-study-its-real-disease). \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/explore/locations/564935726915516/united-states/san-francisco-california/hellomd/)\n\nWe know that compounds in marijuana bond with endocannabinoid system (ECS) receptors, which are found throughout the body and help modulate many processes including pain management, movement and memory. So, it fits that cannabis could help fibromyalgia suffers with pain and all of the related symptoms. \n\nWe’ve gathered the most popular Q&As from our [Answers](https://hellomd.com/questions-and-answers/) page about how cannabis can help ease the symptoms of fibromyalgia. If you have an additional question about marijuana for fibromyalgia, please feel free to post it on our website and a knowledgeable member of our community will be happy to answer it for you. \n\n### Q: What are others using to help with fibromyalgia?\nAnswer: [@pamelahadfield](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-not-opioids-hellomds-pamela-hadfield-on-nowthis/) I have had fibromyalgia and what helped me was using a tincture 2–3 times a day. I use a 4:1 tincture and a 20:1 high-cannabidiol (CBD) tincture. A company called Care By Design also has 20:1 gel caps that are 10 mg tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) each, I believe. It took a while for the effects to really be felt, but now I don't get the random pains anymore. My case isn’t severe, however.\n\nHere’s a link to several articles we’ve written about fibromyalgia:\n\nhttps://hellomd.com/tag/fibromyalgia/\n\nI hope this helps!\n\nRELATED: [MARIJUANA & FIBROMYALGIA: MARY’S SUCCESS STORY](https://hellomd.com/articles/marijuana-and-fibromyalgia-marys-success-story/)\n\n### Q: Would CBD be a good choice for fibromyalgia?\n**_ Any advice from a doctor would be greatly appreciated._**\n\nAnswer: [@drkim](https://www.hellomd.com/people/5896394f4c4b960008abd774/drkim) For pain and mood symptoms due to fibromyalgia, most patients benefit from both THC and CBD. CBD on its own, for most fibromyalgia patients, does not provide adequate relief. THC is also a vital component when treating the mood symptoms related to fibromyalgia.\n\nAccordingly, I recommend neither pure CBD, nor even low THC-containing products. Microdosing a low dose of sativa would be an effective dosing protocol for most. Naturally, please trial in a safe environment and avoid operating heavy machinery such as an automobile. Please consult a qualified cannabis physician before starting any cannabis protocol.\n\n[Read more answers to this question](https://hellomd.com/questions-and-answers/what-products-would-be-best-for-fibromyalgia/).\n\n### Q: The right cartridge for fibromyalgia?\n**_I just looked at the strains that are good for fibromyalgia, but I’ve been using a vape pen and the names for the cartridges are different. Maybe I'm just confused and new at this, the dispensary that I went to was not very helpful and didn’t seem to know much about the cartridges. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you._**\n\nAnswer: [@drolson](https://www.hellomd.com/people/550c5a786336370003010000/drolson) The names of the oils are not as significant as the contents. Please look for a high-CBD oil. AC/DC, Harlequin and Cannatonic are three of the more popular high-CBD strains and therefore oils to vaporize to get you out of pain almost immediately. At the same time, you may start oral CBD in tincture form, since they do take about a month to build up in your system and become fully effective. But in any form, CBD works to get rid of the inflammatory cells.\n\nVitamin D has also been shown to help healing in cases like fibromyalgia. Ideally the blood level for vitamin D to overcome chronic pain would be above 55ng/ml, but don’t take your vitamin D on the day you're having your blood tested or it could appear erroneously high.\n\nPhoto credit: [huyen.](https://unsplash.com/@byhuyen/)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana) guide. This is her story on how cannabis has helped treat her multiple conditions and neuropathies.\n\n### A Long, Hard Journey Before Cannabis\n\nWith all that 53-year-old Anne has been through, it’s hard to believe that her journey can be traced back to carpal tunnel syndrome. “In 2003, I was working at a job doing repetitive work,” she says. “When I went to the doctor, I found out I had fibromyalgia, and that I had not only carpal tunnel, but De Quervain's and tendonitis.”\n\nAnne was a single mother raising three children at the time, balancing the need to work with the reality that the job was doing harm. “I just kept working, and I had no idea that what I was doing to my hands was so bad until I was in a lot of pain.”\n\nA doctor recommended reconstructive surgery on her thumb. “We’re going to pull the tendons from your forearm to rebuild the muscle in your thumb,” she recalls hearing from her doctor, “so I go into the hospital and have three procedures done on this one hand.”\n\nBut the surgery made things worse. “I came out with a condition called reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD).” \n\nNow on disability, Anne began to suffer from depression and was diagnosed with generalized anxiety by her counselor. Meanwhile, the Elavil she was prescribed to help with the pain caused by fibromyalgia “made me sleep 20 hours, and I put on weight, which caused back problems. I went from 175, fit for a person with my build, to 240 pounds.”\n\nAnne was eventually able to go back to school, but things took a turn for the worse right before she graduated from her master’s program. “I got hit by an ambulance bus and suffered damage to the left side of my body, where I had the RSD and surgery on my hand,” she says. “I sustained injuries to my back, my hip, my neck.” \n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS & CHRONIC PAIN: MARGARET'S SUCCESS STORY](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/59de618e5fea3938e500c3cd/cannabis-and-chronic-pain-margarets-success-story)\n\n### A Better Life with Access to Medical Marijuana\n\nThroughout the years, Anne supplemented the advice from doctors with homeopathic remedies. “The only way I was able to improve was doing alternative medicine: herbs, meditation, coming off all that medication and learning how to deal with the pain.”\n\nAnne had been exposed to cannabis’s medicinal qualities thanks to her upbringing. “I come from a culture where marijuana was a cure for so many things,” she explains, “but in the ’80s and ’90s, we shied away from marijuana because it was illegal, and then you don’t know what you’re smoking, you don’t know what’s being put into it.” \n\nThough she knew cannabis might help, Anne couldn’t risk arrest and potentially endangering her health. “You can’t find it pure, and it’s illegal to even grow in your home, so I had to take the medication that doctors gave me,” she says. “I’ve always had that knowledge [about cannabis], but as time goes by you’re forced to conform.”\n\nOnce New York approved medical marijuana, she started researching. Through the [Department of Health website](https://www.health.ny.gov/regulations/medical_marijuana/), she discovered that she qualified for a fee waiver. “I did the certification process in June 2017 and that’s how my life started changing for the better,” she says.\n\nRELATED: [WHAT TO EXPECT OUT OF NEW YORK'S MEDICAL MARIJUANA PROGRAM](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/59ef6c66e6bbba2a588008d1/what-to-expect-out-of-new-yorks-medical-marijuana-program)\n\nAnne knew things were different the first time she visited PharmaCannis’ Hunts Point dispensary. “They walked me through it when I first went to them and got the medication,” she recalls. “No matter how many times I called them, they took their time and told me how to take [cannabis] and which was the best way to use it. They made me feel really confident and that I was in full control of what I was doing.”\n\nAnne especially appreciated the dispensary’s one-on-one approach with patients. “There’s so much privacy, it’s absolutely clean—that’s big for me because some facilities, it’s just about the money,” Anne explains, referring to other dispensaries that felt more like cattle calls.\n\n“There’s no crowding [at PharmaCannis]. They’re very polite; they answer all my questions, take their time. I can talk to them about anything and call them any time. They’re just constantly professional, and you want to go back. I’m going to apply for a job with them,” she chuckles.\n\n### Cannabis for Pain & Multiple Neuropathies\n\n![Anne success story](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/articles-5a0dd40ee2ac1a000b2d3faa-5df03bd7-2374-4d01-96fb-80b746cf8f3b/original.png)\n\nAnne is taking CBD via tincture and a vaporizer. “It lessens the spasms and cramps that I get which take over my hands and they’re stuck for a minute,” she says, comparing the experience to a mini stroke. “I’m not getting that anymore. Cannabis doesn’t take [the spasms] away permanently, but it controls them. It’s wonderful.”\n\nCannabis has also greatly improved Anne’s mobility. “It helps me get up out of the bed,” she says. “Cannabis allows you not to focus so much on the pain. I’m supposed to take it every eight hours, so if I’m consistent with the tincture, it levels the pain. I can be active and not have to focus on my back, neck or ankle; I don’t have to dread the pain.”\n\nAnne also no longer experiences side effects like nausea or headaches with cannabis. “My body feels normal,” she says, adding that even her anxiety has lessened. “The cannabis calms that nervousness down and helps you regain some kind of control of yourself. It’s a great mood stabilizer.”\n\nAfter just three months of use, Anne no longer needs a home attendant and has scaled back her use of other medications. “Every now and then I take Motrin 400 and then the Topamax, I have 50 mg of that. I still have the stiffness and some of the other problems, but not at the magnitude that I had prior to taking the cannabis,” she says. “It’s just been such a huge improvement. I don’t walk with a cane anymore. I don’t wear my neck brace anymore. My neck doesn’t hurt anymore.”\n\nAnne reflected on the path her life has taken since having carpal tunnel syndrome—something so common that triggered a series of events that changed her life forever. She is now in academia teaching abnormal psychology and is steadfast in her advocacy for medical cannabis. “This has improved the quality of my life,” Anne says. “I just want to give back.”\n\nShe hopes people will reconsider longstanding biases about marijuana. “I think people have this preconception of what cannabis is—you just associate it with drug dealers and have this idea in your head, and it’s all wrong; it’s all negative,” Anne explains. \n\nAnne’s clearly empowered by the experience she’s had with medical cannabis: ”I had all of these things happen to me, and I didn’t crumble. The products I have selected for review are [Satori Edibles](https://hellomd.com/products/586593fb159af1000c6d05fc/) by CannaCraft, [PetraMints](https://www.hellomd.com/marijuana-edibles/petra-mints-moroccan-mint) by Kiva Confections, and Activation Spray by CannaAthlete. In the coming month I look forward to sharing my experiences with you and I hope you will share your microdosing experiences with me as well. If you are new to microdosing I encourage you to read on.\n\n### What's Microdosing?\n\nWhen people think of consuming cannabis, they often will think of the psychoactive high associated with THC. In cannabis lingo this is usually referred to as recreational consumption. On the flip side of this is the medical consumer. This type of consumer may or may not seek the psychoactive component, but mostly seeks therapeutic benefit for whatever condition may be ailing them. In theory, medical consumers will intake the smallest necessary dose, psychotropic or not, to create the desired therapeutic effect. This is where microdosing comes into play, but it is also not strictly constrained to medical consumption as microdosing can have several positive mood enhancing benefits, among other things. \n\nRELATED: [MICRODOSING: CANNATHLETE'S ACTIVATION SPRAY](https://hellomd.com/health-wellness/5895242981441900084c2b02/microdosing-cannaathletes-activation-spray-product-review)\n\nMicrodosing refers to the practice of ingesting small amounts of cannabis to create a specific effect. For a medical consumer this may be self titrating a small amount throughout the day to treat a condition without feeling the effect of being high. For someone not seeking to treat a specific condition, microdosing may be utilized to create a sense of well being, reduce anxiety, focus attention or uplift the spirits on a dreary day. Whatever the motivation may be, microdosing is not about achieving a stereotypical high. For me, [microdosing not only stopped my chronic migraines and fibromyalgia](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/578da024fdc17e000700019d/microdosing-cannabis-stopped-my-chronic-pain), it has increased my sense of overall wellbeing. And I’m not the only one.\n\n### Microdosing is Trending\n\n[Recent studies have indicated](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3566631/) that microdosing may have a more positive effect than macrodosing. This is in large part due to what is called the biphasic effect. Essentially this means that there is a difference between low dosing and high dosing; a substance at a certain point will induce a positive experience but past that point it may turn into a negative experience or a ‘downer’ when too much of a product is consumed. The biphasic effect is often referred to with both alcohol and cannabis. With cannabis microdosing, the aim is to always stay within the positive realm of experience.\n\nMicro dosed products will be one of the biggest trends you will see in cannabis for 2017. Why? People are catching on to the fact that not everyone who enters a dispensary is seeking to get blown out of their mind. In today’s typical dispensary, it is not unusual to see THC percentage levels being anywhere between 60%-99% in a large selection of products. As new consumers have come to the market, there is a new demand for smaller amounts of THC, which create smaller albeit noticeable effects. This has fortunately led to the emergence of the microdosing trend as well as new product development. \n\nPersonally, this makes me very happy as microdosing to date has been largely left up to the consumer. A responsible bud tender may suggest to a new consumer to down-dose products with high levels of THC. For instance a chocolate bar may have 150 mg of THC. In order to microdose that chocolate the consumer would need to cut a small piece off and guess that he or she is taking anywhere from 5-10mg. This is not an exact science and can lead to a bad experience.\n\nRELATED: [MICRODOSING: SATORI CHOCOLATES REVIEW](https://hellomd.com/health-wellness/58797273eb7401000b5ac214/microdosing-cannabis-satori-chocolate-edibles-review)\n\n### New Microdose Products Hit the Market\n\nFor the better part of two years I have been microdosing marijuana successfully. It has helped me as a medical patient but in addition I have also noticed the positive mood enhancement benefits. Microdosing also allows me to stay active both physically and mentally. For these reasons I have been a huge proponent of more microdosed products to be placed within the marketplace. New products will not only address a big gap but also will entice new consumers to give cannabis a try, especially those who are more fearful  due to a past experience or from stories they have heard. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en) \n_______________________________________________________________________\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. People from all walks of life are turning to cannabis in lieu of opioids, other medications or alternative therapies because they are feeling the results and relief, with little to no side effects. \n\nWe thought it would be useful to talk to patients one on one about their medical conditions and ask them to tell their story so we can share it with you. What began as a simple survey has evolved into a revolving door of patients ecstatically conveying the message that cannabis is working for them; and they want to share their success story with others.\n\nWe hope that you enjoy what will be an ongoing series of patient case studies that include a variety of cannabis experiences. We also know there is no one size solution with cannabis, everyone reacts differently and each experience and success may be unique to that person. Our case studies will always follow the same format: A history of the patient's condition, the previous treatment, the experience with cannabis, and specifically how they use cannabis for their condition in order to find relief. \n\n### Mary's Experience with Cannabis\n\n[![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/5824fff8173ef2000b58348a/embedded_images/5824fffb173ef2000b58348b/MaryFibromyalgachronicpain.png)](https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/hellomd-news/patient-success/Mary_Patient+Case+Study__ChronicPain_final.pdf) \nDownload the PDF\n\n### Chronic Pain History\n\nIn 2001 I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Prior to that I had been very healthy. I think it was a period of extreme stress that maybe brought it on. When it started I went from being very mobile to suddenly very debilitated. It started on one side of my body and then migrated to the other side until I could barely move at all. The pain was unbearable.\n\n### Previous Treatments\n\nPrior to trying cannabis It took a long time for doctors to accurately diagnose me. For 8 years I was treated with pharmaceuticals, and many were to deal with the side effects of the initial drugs. At one point I counted that I had been prescribed over 43 drugs. At a certain point, I became a drug zombie. I was unable to drive my kids to school or to enjoy life. A turning point came for me when I blacked out and woke up in the ER. \n\n### Cannabis Experience\n\nAfter my blackout I started to think of how I might improve my well being. First I cut out diet soda, then I started to eat organic. Then it occurred to me that cannabis might be a more natural solution and worth a try. The pharmaceuticals were not helping and in fact were making my life worse. I worked with my pain management doctor for 3.5 months to wean myself off of all prescriptions and use marijuana instead. I always say to people to work with a doctor when doing this! After starting cannabis it helped me manage my pain, I was much more mellow and my family wanted to spend time with me.\n\n### The Cannabis Tool Kit\n\n### Flower\n\nAt night I smoke Blueberry Kush, to help me sleep. During the day I will smoke Amnesia Mystery which helps with movement, especially on a bad day.\n\n### Vape Pen\n\nI use G Vape, which is Snoop Dog’s vape pen that has a dry chamber. I use kief within this as it is very cost effective.\n\n### Edibles\n\nMy favorite edible is by Kiva and it is the low dose 5mg Blueberry Terra Bites. When I am in pain I will take 10mg every 3-4 hours.\n\n### Topicals\n\nI make my own topicals with alcohol. Once I infuse the alcohol with cannabis I pour it onto wet wipes. Rubbing the wet wipe on an area with localized pain provides immediate relief for me.\n\n### Mary Says...\n\n\"When I went off of opioids and started using cannabis I was able to enjoy human touch again. I did not even realize I had lost that ability. With cannabis I am able to enjoy my life and be happy again.\"\n______________________________________________________________________\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Chronic pain is the main symptom of fibromyalgia, along with depression, headaches, and insomnia. [A 2007 study](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15159679) in the Journal of Neurology found that cannabis can help ease the pain caused by peripheral neuropathy, which is pain caused by damaged nerves. The placebo controlled trial found that cannabis was comparable to the best effective treatment that is currently available for peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy is one of the main causes of pain for people with fibromyalgia. \n\nIn a [survey by the National Pain Foundation](http://nationalpainreport.com/marijuana-rated-most-effective-for-treating-fibromyalgia-8823638.html), medical marijuana was seen as the most effective treatment for fibromyalgia when compared to the three main medications prescribed for the condition, which are Lyrica, Cymbalta, and Savella. 62% of patients who used medical marijuana found it to be a very effective at treating their symptoms of fibromyalgia, and 33% of people said it helped their symptoms. If there is one thing we have learned, it's that when patients find success with medicinal cannabis, they want to share their story!\n\nThis past week, I had the honor to speak with Mary. Mary was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 2001 and has suffered greatly from the symptoms common with this condition. At the peak of her illness she was able to count 43 prescription medications doctors had given her, many highly addictive. FORTY THREE! \n\n### Prescription Zombie\n\nMary confided in me that she had become a prescription zombie. She considered her life on permanent hold and she was unable even to drive her kids to school for fear that she would not get them there or home safely. One day she woke up in the ER because she had had an opioid blackout.\n\nMary decided she had had enough and wanted to regain her health. She made the choice to stop drinking Diet Coke and then Mary made the choice to eat a healthier diet, so she stopped eating processed foods and began eating organic. \n\n### Cannabis is a More Natural Solution\n\nAfter these changes, she told me, \"Why, if I am putting all of these good things into my body, am I taking so many pills every day? They were making me feel worse, so I thought maybe I should try a more natural medication.\" Mary found cannabis, and for her, it worked.\n\nShe worked with her doctors and slowly weaned herself off of the prescription meds she was on. This process took over four months (she emphasized the importance of working with doctors when getting off of addictive opioids). While weaning herself, she started to use cannabis to ease the withdrawal symptoms. \n\nMary found that not only was cannabis helping with her symptoms but that cannabis gave her her feeling of touch back. Until then she had not even realized that she had lost the feeling of being touched. Her libido returned and according to her \"My life was back on track again.\"\n\nSince then Mary has become an avid home grower. She has also become very proficient at DIY recipes and making cannabis products at home, which she feels are of the best quality and completely organic.\n\n### DIY Coconut Milk\n\nHere she shares her favorite recipe for marijuana infused coconut milk. She swears by its medicinal properties and enjoys her medicated coconut milk regularly to reduce her fibromyalgia symptoms.\n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/57fae620299fb7000b811f3f/embedded_images/57fae887321b5700077901a6/Screen_Shot_2016-10-09_at_5.59.07_PM.png)\n\n### What’s Needed:\n\n>3 cup large mouth ball jar\n\n>2 cans organic coconut milk - or equivalent \n\n>Cooking thermometer\n\n>Hand mixer that fits into the jar\n\n>1 half gram of finely ground Keif\n\n### How To\n\nOpen one can of coconut milk and pour it into the jar. Microwave the jar on high power for 2 to 2 1/2 minutes or until temperature is at least 160°F. \n\nAdd the cannabis concentrate (Mary uses kief), and blend well with the hand blender. Place the jar back into the microwave for 20 minutes at 20% power. \n\nTake the jar out and mix well with your hand mixer. Make sure to scrape all the concentrate from the side of the jar and then place the jar back into the microwave for 15 minutes at 10% power.\n \nNow add the second can of coconut milk to the jar and blend well. Place the jar back into the microwave for five more minutes at 10% power. Blend well again.\n \nTake the jar out of the microwave and let it cool for approximately 30 minutes before placing jar lid on. Once cooled, shake the jar to blend the settled water before placing the jar into the refrigerator.\n\nThat’s it! This medicated coconut milk lasts 10 days in refrigerator. In terms of dosing, you will need to know the milligrams of THC within your chief, how much chief you have used and then divide with the amount of coconut milk to figure out your dosage. The author recommends a dosage of 1/2 to 1 ounce.\n  \nThis coconut milk can be added to smoothies, coffee, tea, mashed potatoes, cereal, baked goods and anything that milk is used in. You can also drink it by itself, leaving it on the bottom of your tongue allows it to be utilized faster sublingually.  \n\nDo you have questions about about cannabis? The main factor in all autoimmune diseases is inflammation, but there are many theories to what causes these conditions, ranging from genetic to environmental factors. While experiencing an Autoimmune Disorder, the body attacks itself because the immune system has trouble determining the difference between foreign agents and the bodies internal workings. The damage caused by the body attacking itself can be extremely detrimental and even fatal. \n\n### How can Cannabis Help?\n\nA University of South Carolina [study](http://www.iflscience.com/health-and-medicine/medical-marijuana-shows-promise-against-autoimmune-diseases/) revealed novel pathways through which THC can suppress the body’s immune function. The study was published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry and showed that the suppression of immune response by THC could be a useful treatment to autoimmune disease. THC is able to act as an epigenome, an outside molecule that has the ability to change DNA function, and affect DNA expression in the immune system. THC was able change the critical histones and suppress inflammation in the immune system of the rodents that the study was conducted on. In this study, THC was injected directly into the rodents and was able to substantially alter 13 microRNAs, which regulate the expression of genes. This study showed a large potential for THC to ease the symptoms of autoimmune diseases such as arthritis, lupus, and colitis. \n\nInflammation can be suppressed by activating the cannabinoid receptors, CB2, on immune cells. Though there have not yet been clinical human trials, this study opens up new avenues to investigate as possible treatment options for autoimmune diseases. Though this study only looked at THC, CBD is also known to help the immune system. CBD helps repair the bodies ability to recognize the difference between normal internal body functions and foreign entities, keeping the body from attacking itself.\n\n### Rheumatoid Arthritis\n\nCannabis has already shown promise in helping with specific autoimmune diseases. A Hebrew University [study](https://www.leafly.com/news/health/the-medical-minute-can-cannabis-help-repair-arthritic-joints) showed that lab mice experience a 50% increase in joint health while being  treated with CBD, showing promise for alleviating the symptoms rheumatoid arthritis. Another study, published in the journal Rheumatology showed that CB2 receptors are found in exceptionally large amounts in the joint tissue of arthritis patients. Cannabis can be used to reduce inflammation, and pain, by stimulating CB2 receptors found in the joints. \n\n### Celiac Disease\n\nCannabis may also work to help people with Celiac Disease, a severe gluten allergy that causes an autoimmune response. 1 in 141 americans have Celiac Disease, but it often goes undiagnosed. CBD can work on CB2 receptors in the gut and help fight against autoimmune attacks in the digestive system when gluten is consumed. \n\n### Fibromyalgia\n\nA survey published by Care By Design showed that 100% of fibromyalgia patients surveyed reported a reduction of pain when using CBD rich cannabis for at least 30 days. A University of Heidelberg [study](http://norml.org/library/item/fibromyalgia) out of Germany showed that when Fibromyalgia patients were given varying doses of THC, and no other pain medication, they all experienced a significant decrease in pain. \n\n### Inflammatory Bowel Disease\n\nCannabis promotes healthy gut activity and has been historically used to relieve digestive problems. CBD can help reduce inflammation throughout the digestive system and THC may also prove helpful for patients with various Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. A 2011 [study](https://www.medicaljane.com/2014/06/28/medical-marijuana-and-inflammatory-bowel-disease-ibd/) from the Institute of Gastroenterology and Hepatology found that 21 of 30 Crohn’s disease patients found a significant improvement in their symptoms while using medical cannabis. \n\n[Photo Credit](https://www.flickr.com/photos/vinally/5475673386/in/photolist-9kSfVQ-cL6ZzS-ePkJ6x-gYdZ9A-4yg275-eW1NYW-9gT4if-arrbd8-66JmzH-bXviVu-qpDE9i-29Nofz-9vX53p-WBdbs-eTXDHt-cYycRh-Kei68-d6Ch8f-ewUJjd-bNpKLp-bWPsRS-bWR5DG-Nr3KJ-bWRbif-ohRa5g-pddVQb-7wY4nG-buy6iM-cuQbXQ-bitb9r-7pZUqd-eewR5X-883kSe-uSWouQ-uSYxGJ-uThpC1-6QpkG5-enQuQt-6Bom6N-9fDbN9-6Bj9qV-pHEUeh-buy6o4-edeHm8-wLMZi-6Bjchk-dw3ai-6BjboK-sF1Mz-buy6cV)\n\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAABQAAAAPCAIAAABr+ngCAAAACXBIWXMAAAsTAAALEwEAmpwYAAADnElEQVQozxVS7W8SBxy+v2DJPi7LsmRf/LAsWWL2YdFk0ZjFZXHJdOlmtQ3bzHT2xSj03b6lrrWvwAnl7YA7joIVXIu0lJcilIKFchzcIbRAC1KRsSo9OK6Ftkm3M3k+Ps/ze36/3wOc//rzG3Xnx7s5Vu3o9gt9JWU/Kaz9R4WOcyvMpqlIGIu4Zj+KVuMzRUxJmMfmJLyH7fWcK9+cPX0KuHX1guA+x4727/i1tYzjpOArkPNBM+jW9tkhnlXZtaTs8ugG3brBLZeIITUpJ7gAdY7wfqm/dAaY6m60w907Pnlte+ko63QZpvQTt9a0d6IGLq5ryXsE5YjmjVcWswqtqvuEeZQKqbafgyYpb6D1J2Bewkst80sEWt005taUL3QdfuTmorB+fvKaB+bmPOJyBDnenDlJ6RkSTTgEeZ+0hKvjlkk9vxUImx6+CyrKuJJFdnnYLfsNvPftJPfyCO/aQPPVvtt1w1zOM2lP3CqkIurqBmuhoSPwrl8eMD4Act7pCoGwoDA5m/MR77sHLZdbfq1r/OHcV6c++eKzj78/82XDjxeHub9bZJ1x00AZV7B6lv/aIwb2cJh5qaMjqvzK+LrmD8VgQ39bM4SoJPzes59+ePqjD9oazoEyPgJJuDd+1k+0ZpxTFYIVa/YwJXCQWqhtWxgCfhuY/serJB1oMhnb3Ir38Ptb7tQ13bvePHTXsuosMwyJB1afTO2sStnP0QTChgcOXzmPMjYKR3b9EIUb6aiVzm/UquVkeuupy2bDfK8KudpB6V2GDJkVVnnH7jrERN+v/V7MbNmOs0ubFpUPlR28hFO2Mbe6J7YkTnuf5jD763Xbukk5K2gTtV+ZbL2wLG8uhZQl9rphNcXGLsYWDtOWN17VgkCQcakrUTTrFofnhrxolxvudCjuLk43mUV/Bmc7sm6QiRuq20tM3FgOwzmvBGAruZ80V0gEm5VaHoGFgLaWeLwfn6Gj2lIYLkXgCqk5iGmrib+Pc56j3Oph1n2QeFbEoLB5DHA+Hs9j+r0QRBNwZA4yDE9gs7K3QS0d1e3HtDShKhEwFVbTMUM17aiwM8mZvbA66RSYZO2AeOi2zzCS80mKmKIcUSWs8kXBqFUk8KHiDQucXUH+DSBlAmW9yoSWCikoXJ1ZETmQHmEvB2huvCT966b3ydCOV8pWjSbUFA5nXZBfJ7KC4y4IJOelbPI9TFEMsgR52g0uo73CPk7T9Yv/A12Pa0eUa7IuAAAAAElFTkSuQmCC","aspectRatio":1.3513513513513513,"src":"/static/c445132d4c9a2cf63810812dcb917cdb/31476/f148266d3e54b9588b28c6cafb3bbc1d.png","srcSet":"/static/c445132d4c9a2cf63810812dcb917cdb/69585/f148266d3e54b9588b28c6cafb3bbc1d.png 200w,\n/static/c445132d4c9a2cf63810812dcb917cdb/497c6/f148266d3e54b9588b28c6cafb3bbc1d.png 400w,\n/static/c445132d4c9a2cf63810812dcb917cdb/31476/f148266d3e54b9588b28c6cafb3bbc1d.png 761w","srcWebp":"/static/c445132d4c9a2cf63810812dcb917cdb/1d747/f148266d3e54b9588b28c6cafb3bbc1d.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/c445132d4c9a2cf63810812dcb917cdb/61e93/f148266d3e54b9588b28c6cafb3bbc1d.webp 200w,\n/static/c445132d4c9a2cf63810812dcb917cdb/1f5c5/f148266d3e54b9588b28c6cafb3bbc1d.webp 400w,\n/static/c445132d4c9a2cf63810812dcb917cdb/1d747/f148266d3e54b9588b28c6cafb3bbc1d.webp 761w","sizes":"(max-width: 761px) 100vw, 761px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2053-markdown","title":"Download our Medical Marijuana Patient Study","slug":"download-our-medical-marijuana-patient-study","content":"For us at HelloMD, the medical cannabis industry is an exciting and fascinating business to be in. Every day we leave the office knowing that we are improving people's lives and helping further the cause for mainstream acceptance of this amazing plant.  In the short time since we’ve been providing our service (one year) we’ve witnessed a positive shift in how the broader population perceive the legal cannabis market. The collective contribution of the industry has performed a remarkable feat in changing attitudes and in moving us from back-alley to the main street.\r\n\r\nWe have come far. Yet, for anyone entering the industry, indeed for anyone in it, it can still be difficult finding information to help plan and grow a business. Very little is published indicating patient preferences, methods of use, reasons for use, etc. Most in the industry are planning products and services based upon small sample sets of anecdotal data and intuition. Not that there is anything wrong with that. After all, we did that. But if that’s all you’ve got, then it’s really difficult to identify trends and to plan ahead. \r\n\r\nThat is why, in January of this year, we conducted a detailed study of patients that use medical marijuana. \r\n\r\n[Download the medical marijuana patient study here](https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/hellomd-news/HelloMD_Medical_Marijuana_Patient_Survey.pdf).\r\n\r\nWe believe it to be the most comprehensive study to date and we are very pleased to share it with the community at large. Our methodology included surveying our membership of 17,000 patients (all of whom have been evaluated by our own doctors), correlating with other data sets (public and private), analyzing, and then using the results to form key findings. Thanks to our friends at [FireFly](http://www.thefirefly.com) (of whom generously donated 5 of their beautiful vaporizers as an incentive to participants) we had an exceptional response of over 1,400 patients. Anonymously, every one of them answered an extensive questionnaire that detailed their own experience and details regarding conditions leading to use, modes of use, efficacy, and much more.\r\n\r\nAll this data led to key findings and learning's that helped us understand:  \r\n\r\n - The demographic of patients using medical marijuana today, and how it has been changing overtime\r\n - Conditions being treating with medical cannabis\r\n - How effective cannabis is as a treatment modality\r\n - How patients feel about using cannabis as an alternative, or as a compliment, to other more-traditional prescribed pharmaceuticals\r\n - How, or if, patients talk about their use of cannabis among family, friends and colleagues.\r\n - Where medical cannabis purchases are made\r\n - Where patients obtain education and knowledge of medical cannabis\r\n\r\nPerhaps the most surprising finding; an emerging demographic that, indisputably, is eclipsing the recreational demographic. This has all sorts of implications – politically and otherwise.\r\n\r\nWe have compiled all findings into a report that can be [downloaded as a PDF here](https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/hellomd-news/HelloMD_Medical_Marijuana_Patient_Survey.pdf).","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.5151515151515151,"src":"/static/e8673bbdb39b8593fd7a7da80b6c7825/14b42/38cff30a6e1ef5b926d055a399eae91d.jpg","srcSet":"/static/e8673bbdb39b8593fd7a7da80b6c7825/f836f/38cff30a6e1ef5b926d055a399eae91d.jpg 200w,\n/static/e8673bbdb39b8593fd7a7da80b6c7825/2244e/38cff30a6e1ef5b926d055a399eae91d.jpg 400w,\n/static/e8673bbdb39b8593fd7a7da80b6c7825/14b42/38cff30a6e1ef5b926d055a399eae91d.jpg 800w,\n/static/e8673bbdb39b8593fd7a7da80b6c7825/47498/38cff30a6e1ef5b926d055a399eae91d.jpg 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/e8673bbdb39b8593fd7a7da80b6c7825/58556/38cff30a6e1ef5b926d055a399eae91d.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/e8673bbdb39b8593fd7a7da80b6c7825/61e93/38cff30a6e1ef5b926d055a399eae91d.webp 200w,\n/static/e8673bbdb39b8593fd7a7da80b6c7825/1f5c5/38cff30a6e1ef5b926d055a399eae91d.webp 400w,\n/static/e8673bbdb39b8593fd7a7da80b6c7825/58556/38cff30a6e1ef5b926d055a399eae91d.webp 800w,\n/static/e8673bbdb39b8593fd7a7da80b6c7825/99238/38cff30a6e1ef5b926d055a399eae91d.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}}]}},"pageContext":{"limit":12,"skip":0,"numPages":3,"currentPage":1,"id":5252,"name":"Fibromyalgia","slug":"fibromyalgia","country":"US"}},"staticQueryHashes":["3949754563","4179947113","4202924991"]}
