At high levels, however, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can, for some people, increase anxiety due to its psychoactive qualities. That said, non-psychoactive cannabidiol (CBD) has been shown to [successfully reduce anxiety](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4604171/). \n\nA new study out of Vanderbilt University found that [cannabinoid receptors](http://www.cell.com/neuron/abstract/S0896-62731400017-8) are present in the part of the brain associated with emotion in mice. These receptors, present in the area of the brain that dictates the fight or flight response, are closely linked to anxiety. It’s believed that these receptors are also present in the amygdala of humans, which could explain why medical marijuana is effective at helping people with anxiety. \n\n![Untitled81-min (1).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled81_min_1_e34fa8c865.png)\n\n### CBD Strains Are Most Effective at Reducing Anxiety\n\nA 2011 study published in _Neuropyschopharmacology_ showed that, when it comes to using marijuana for anxiety, [CBD was extremely beneficial for patients with social anxiety disorder](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21307846). The study was conducted with 24 participants diagnosed with social anxiety disorder as well as a control group of 12 people who didn’t have the disorder. Half of the participants with social anxiety disorder were given CBD, while the other half were given a placebo. All of the study participants then had to complete a public speaking test. \n\nPhysiological measures were taken before, during and after the test. The physiological measures, as well as personal surveys taken after the public speaking test, showed a significant decrease in anxiety levels in patients who were administered CBD.\n\nIt turns out [anandamide](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41401-018-0075-x), which is a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps decrease anxiety, stays intact with the introduction of CBD. This is because CBD strains decrease the production of the fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), which naturally degrades anandamide. \n\nRELATED: [WHY DOES CANNABIS MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD?](https://hellomd.com/articles/why-does-cannabis-make-you-feel-good/)\n\n![Untitledval90.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval90_83319d194d.png)\n\n### 10 Best Marijuana Strains for Anxiety\n\nChoosing a strain of medicinal marijuana that helps control your anxiety can involve some testing to find what works best for you. It’s important to choose a strain with adequate levels of CBD in order to control anxiety. CBD levels should be higher than or balanced with THC, which allows for the psychoactive side effects of the THC to be counteracted by the CBD. Here are some of the best high-CBD marijuana strains on the market that can help with anxiety.\n\n![Untitledva2-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledva2_min_5d14d8521a.png)\n\n### 1. [Harlequin](https://hellomd.ca/strains/harlequin)\n\n[Harlequin](https://hellomd.ca/strains/harlequin) is a 75% sativa-dominant hybrid that’s known for its higher CBD to THC levels. With a 5:2 ratio of CBD to THC, it typically has about 8–16% CBD with 4–7% THC. Harlequin is known to produce a clear head; patients report feeling more alert following consumption. The marijuana strain is effective at reducing anxiety because high levels of CBD provide relaxation without sedation. Harlequin is a good choice for people with anxiety due to its low THC content. \n\n![Untitledva3-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledva3_min_64bc0e518b.png)\n\n### 2. [Harle-Tsu](https://hellomd.ca/strains/harle-tsu)\n\n[Harle-Tsu](https://hellomd.ca/strains/harle-tsu) is known for its extremely high levels of CBD, which is often found at rates 20 times higher than that of THC. As such, the strain has strong anxiety-relieving properties. Harle-Tsu is known for producing relaxed and focused feelings, and it’s also effective at decreasing stress levels. People often report that they feel uplifted and happy after smoking this marijuana strain.\n\n![Untitledva33-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledva33_min_88c570eecc.png)\n\n### 3. [ACDC](https://hellomd.ca/strains/acdc)\n\n[ACDC](https://hellomd.ca/strains/acdc/) is one of the highest CBD strains around. ACDC has a 20:1 CBD to THC ratio, with CBD levels as high as 19%. This sativa-dominant cannabis strain is extremely effective at reducing anxiety, with little to no pyschoactivity due to its high ratio of CBD to THC. Patients report feeling relaxed and happy when they consume the ACDC strain. According to some reports, one possible drawback is the potential for dry mouth.\n\n![Untitledva4-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledva4_min_c885069f07.png)\n\n### 4. [CBD Shark](https://hellomd.com/strains/cbd-shark)\n\n[CBD Shark](https://hellomd.com/strains/cbd-shark) is an 80% indica-dominant strain that has an equal ratio of CBD to THC. This strain is very helpful at reducing anxiety without any overly intoxicating effects. A well-balanced marijuana strain, CBD Shark is known to produce clear-minded, happy and relaxing effects. This strain could be a good choice for evening use or if people have anxiety as well as pain, because it has enough THC to produce pain-relieving and sleep-inducing effects with borderline psychoactivity.\n\n![Untitledva5-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledva5_min_77cafdc368.png)\n\n### 5. [Canna-Tsu](https://hellomd.com/strains/canna-tsu)\n\n[Canna-Tsu](https://hellomd.com/strains/canna-tsu) is a hybrid marijuana strain that’s a mix of Cannatonic and Sour Tsunami. Canna-Tsu is known for its higher levels of CBD. That said, it has a 1:1 ratio of CBD to THC, which may result in some psychoactivity. [Haoma](https://hellomd.com/strains/haoma)\n\n[Haoma](https://hellomd.com/strains/haoma) is a 70% indica strain that has calming and stress-relieving effects. It’s typically found at around a 1:1 ratio of CBD to THC—meaning some may experience a psychoactive effect. Haoma helps to reduce anxiety because of its higher levels of CBD. Since there are a few different varieties of Haoma, each type varies slightly in the amount of CBD it contains. Because Haoma is an indica, it’s a great choice for people with anxiety who also need a marijuana strain that will help them fall asleep. \n\n![Untitledval7-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval7_min_6a22e1c2f5.png)\n\n### 7. The high-CBD strain is known for its relaxing and uplifting qualities with little to no psychoactive effects, depending on how much is consumed. Cannatonic holds acclaim as one of the top medical marijuana strains for reducing anxiety as well inflammation. \n\n![Untitledval8-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval8_min_cfe4e04aa5.png)\n\n### 8. It usually has CBD levels hovering around 12% and THC levels under 6%. Known for its relaxing and focusing effects, Trident is very effective at helping people control their anxiety and stress. [Sour Tsunami](https://hellomd.ca/strains/sour-tsunami)\n\n[Sour Tsunami](https://hellomd.ca/strains/sour-tsunami) is a cannabis strain that’s specifically bred for its high CBD content and as a result is highly sought after for its medicinal properties. This sativa-dominant hybrid has about 10–11% CBD and a THC content typically under 10%. This strain can help relieve anxiety, and it may also help ease painful conditions, because of its moderate levels of THC. Sour Tsunami is also known to combat inflammation. People often report feeling clear-headed after ingesting this popular medicinal strain.\n\n![Untitledval-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval_min_7ce091136d.png)\n\n### 10. It was an established headache remedy in the U.S. from 1839 until 1937, when the government made the plant illegal. During this time, distinguished doctors who touted cannabis’s effectiveness included Silas Weir Mitchell, then president of the NY Neurological Society, and William Gowers, considered a founding father of modern neurology.\n\nFast forward to today, and cannabis is still illegal at the federal level, making peer-reviewed, clinical studies on the plant’s efficacy extremely challenging. That said, a number of preliminary studies along with plenty of anecdotal evidence point to marijuana as a good option for relieving headaches—not to mention its various triggers.\n\nFollowing are our team’s go-to cannabis strains for easing the pain in their noggin.\n\n### 1. OG Kush\n\n![OG Kush cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-572c35a3-1df9-41f4-9069-005388241a02/original.jpg)\n\n**Dmitry B., marketing videographer/editor:** “My favorite cannabis strain to help with tension headaches is OG Kush because it comes on fast and is very cerebral. It contains high levels of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) for effective pain relief. So, the combination of potency, rapid onset and the cerebral high of OG Kush basically makes it possible for me to combat any headache.\n\n“OG Kush has a very distinct aroma and smell. OG Kush tastes really fruity, punchy. You can definitely taste the diesel in there.\n\n“When it comes to OG Kush, don't overdo it. I’d suggest consuming OG Kush at the end of the day. And don't overmedicate because it could have the reverse effect and make the headache flare up again. Instead, go low and slow. Take one to three puffs, depending on your tolerance level, and see how you feel.”\n\n### 2. Jack Herer\n\n![Jack Herer cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-91dbcca4-f11c-4dd3-914a-e0abaff4ec06/original.jpg)\n\n**Ryan G., customer service lead:** “I really enjoy Jack Herer, because it's very fast-acting and an effective pain reliever. This is one of the more reliable marijuana strains. It's not only uplifting and energetic, but because it's a sativa, it allows me to go about my day and do things that I need to get done. I don't feel couch-locked as I would if I took an indica.\n\n“When I smoke Jack Herer, it takes effect within 10 minutes. So, if you smoke it or use a flower vaporizer, I find that it tends to be more effective—stronger and heavier—than using an oil cartridge. \n\n“Jack Herer, which tastes and smells very piney with notes of citrus, is a cannabis strain that I’d recommend for all experience levels. Of course, if you're a novice user, you should go slow and take care, because certain Jack Herer strains are a little bit on the potent side.”\n\n### 3. Chemdawg\n\n![Chemdawg cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-613667ac-aa23-4db7-9421-b14acbb752d7/original.jpg)\n\n**Veronica B, customer service specialist:** “I’ve been very fortunate in that I don’t experience headaches very frequently. However, if the pain starts pounding in my head, I like to turn to an indica-dominant strain to alleviate the symptoms. Chemdawg is the perfect cannabis strain for me as it provides strong cerebral effects, but also a full body relaxation to distract me from my headache.\n\n“Chemdawg has a gasoline smell, with flavors that are earthy, woody, reminiscent of pine. This is a potent strain, so novice cannabis consumers should start with a small amount.\n\n“Upon consumption, you can expect to feel relaxed from head to toe. Depending on the patient, Chemdawg can be a great choice for day or night. In any case, the headaches will no longer be a nuisance.”\n\n### 4. Harlequin\n\n![Harlequin cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-1da9487e-143e-4339-8139-cec1ae8975bc/original.jpg)\n\n**Kevin P., customer service specialist:** “I tend to prefer CBD-rich (cannabidiol-rich) strains, specifically Harlequin when I'm experiencing headaches—and I’m a seasoned cannabis user, so I’m comfortable with THC.\n\n“Harlequin is unique for two different reasons. First, it's almost always at 5:2 or more commonly a 3:1 ratio, meaning three-parts CBD to one-part THC. It's also sativa dominant with that little bit of THC that's in there.\n\n“When I have a headache, I’m trying to relieve the pain and also that foggy feeling that I get with a headache. So, something like a 3:1 has just enough CBD to relieve the pain, with just enough THC to amplify that painkilling ability. But it’s also just enough THC to distract from the headache without leaving me stoned.\n\n“When I experience a headache, I don't burn Harlequin. Because the last thing I want to do is be coughing all of the time, since that amplifies the pain in my head. So, I use a Pax device. I'll grind up the flower and then vaporize it, so it's a lot smoother. It's a lot easier to medicate that way.\n\n“In terms of taste and smell, you definitely get some earthiness and sweetness with Harlequin. I want to say that there's a little bit of mango in it, but it really does depend on the batch.”\n\n### 5. Gelato\n\n![Gelato cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-1d984c1e-6a20-40ef-94fb-d43ce5e0a900/original.jpg)\n\n**Nik S., customer service specialist:** “My favorite marijuana strain to relieve tension headaches is Gelato because of the hybrid effect that it provides. Gelato provides good feelings; it's not such a heavy couch-locker, and it's going to also give you those euphoric feelings. \n\n“And it tastes like gelato. It takes very creamy depending on the phenotype. There's the #25, #33, #41, #45—those are the popular ones. And the 25, 33 and also the 45 are going to taste very creamy. The 41 is going to have that creamy taste as well, but also a little bit of like kind of a nutty taste as well. It's very flavorful.\n\n“When Gelato first takes effect, it brings on the feeling of an indica: You may feel kind of slow at first. But then, it starts to balance out with the sativa effects. It kills the pain. In terms of how much to consume, I think it just depends on the person and how great your pain is.\n\nThis cannabis strain isn’t for beginners. It’s definitely for the more experienced consumer. If a novice user wanted to try it, you may be able to find lighter versions of Gelato. There may be some indoor varieties that may not be grown to yield as much THC.”\n\n### 6. ACDC\n\n![ACDC cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-1b57c4c3-8a42-4cda-b862-717b76986055/original.jpg)\n\n**Bart S., customer service specialist:** “With tension headaches, I would do a high-CBD cannabis strain likeACDC. And I’d do that with an indica like Granddaddy Purple. Granddaddy Purple—really almost any indica strain—helps me when I have a migraine. I prefer Granddaddy Purple, because of the taste and flavor, which is like a piney berry. It puts me to sleep, and I’ll wake up without a migraine.\n\n“But for tension headaches, ACDC, which has a 3:1 ratio of CBD to THC, is a good choice. I’d dab it, because it’s a lot stronger; as a dab, it’s a more concentrated form of cannabis. When I have a tension headache, I want to take care of it quickly. I don’t really want to take the chance of smoking a bowl and having it not work. I want to attack the headache right away.”\n\nPhoto credits: [Anh Nguyen](https://unsplash.com/@pwign) (main image); [Nickel Bag of Funk](https://www.flickr.com/photos/nickel_bag_of_funk/) (OG Kush)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. With plenty of opportunities to witness colorful explosions in the sky, the timing is right to try a new cannabis variety to enhance your fireworks experience. \n\nYep. It’s true. Cannabis may really be able to help you improve your fireworks viewing fun. An animal study performed on tadpoles showed that [cannabinoids seem to improve visual contrast in low light](https://elifesciences.org/articles/15932). What this means is that having cannabinoids in your system could help make the July Fourth fireworks even more vivid and visually stimulating than usual. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nWe’ve put together a list of marijuana strains that are not only great for the visual effects of fireworks, but also for social ease and relaxation. These six cannabis strains for different sensibilities can help consumers have fun and be stress- and anxiety-free during this year’s Independence Day festivities. \n\n### Blue Dream Cannabis Strain Calms & Stimulates at the Same Time\n\nThis is an everyman’s strain, probably one of the most popular strains across state lines. Blue Dream’s parents are a classic case of opposites that attract. On the one hand, Blueberry is an indica that relaxes and soothes, while Haze is known for its creative stimulation. Blue Dream also has a fruity aroma and tastes remarkably like blueberry pie, making it a seasonal favorite perfect for late summer afternoons.\n\nThe combination of mental energy and body relaxation makes [Blue Dream](https://hellomd.com/strains/blue-dream) an ideal hybrid for fireworks viewing. It’s social and should prevent most from becoming startled by noisy fireworks. If the words “calm euphoria” sound like the feeling you’re going for, try (and share) this crowd-pleasing cannabis strain for your Fourth of July activities. \n\n### To Enhance the Visuals of a Fireworks Display, Choose a Cannabis Strain Like White Widow\n\nA popular European cross coming out of Amsterdam’s coffeehouse culture, [White Widow](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/white-widow) \n is a happy-go-lucky, sativa-dominant cannabis hybrid. It has powerful visual effects that can border on psychedelic, depending on the amount consumed. \n\nFor these nifty kaleidoscopic qualities, White Widow is ideal for consuming before a fireworks show to get the most out of the dazzling visuals. White Widow is also great for calming the body without having overly sedative effects. This cannabis strain is often recommended for people who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or mood-related disorders for its uplifting, calming properties. \n\n### Girl Scout Cookies Cannabis Strain Will Have You Relaxed & Ready for Fun\n \nNo list would be complete without an all-time favorite, Girl Scout Cookies (GSC). This indica-leaning hybrid strain is famous for its trippy cerebral effects and potent sense of creative possibility. GSC can lead to some excellent ideas, which is why it’s also a great sidekick for fun and merrymaking. Consumers also note its pleasant flavor profile with sweet and earthy flavors—think brown sugar with a slight hint of nutmeg.\n\nA goofy and giggle-inducing strain, GSC is popular for its happy qualities that would pair well with a summer fireworks display. GSC is likely to stimulate consumers’ appetites and is great for fully enjoying any barbecue spread or picnic that accompanies the fireworks. \n\n### Help Ease Anxiety by Reaching for a Marijuana Strain Like Pineapple Express\n\nAnother well-balanced strain, [Pineapple Express](https://hellomd.com/strains/pineapple-express) really helps ease social anxiety. Family time can be stressful, and Pineapple Express is a hybrid that initiates a pleasant body buzz and a clarifying mental state. It’s ideal for anyone who’s feeling a little down, but still wants to get out and socialize. It can also help calm you if you want to go see the fireworks, but are unsure of being in the middle of a big crowd while things explode overhead. \n\nWith [Trainwreck](https://hellomd.com/strains) as one of its parent strains, Pineapple Express’s long-lasting effects are powerful. Newer marijuana consumers should note that consuming this strain can result in feelings of drowsiness after a few hours of having it. But if “blissful” and “silly” sound good to you, skip the fruit punch and go straight to tropical Pineapple Express. \n\n### Try High-CBD Cannabis Strain Harlequin for Mild, Elevating Effects\n \nThis uplifting sativa strain is high in cannabidiol (CBD), known for its gentle, elevating effects. Depending on how much you consume, [Harlequin](https://hellomd.com/strains/harlequin) has zero to mild psychoactive properties, owing to its higher CBD-to-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) ratio. That’s a big reason why this strain is popular among medical and recreational cannabis consumers alike. \n\nAnd a fun fact about CBD: Recent [research on CBD in animal subjects shows that it can actually reduce appetite](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22543671). So, it’s possible that in humans the cannabinoid could suppress the infamous munchies associated with certain cannabis compounds. If you’re looking for a happy and relaxed experience, and don’t want to overindulge on all of the snacks that might be present at your summer event, try high-CBD marijuana strains like Harlequin or Cannatonic.\n\nRELATED: [HIGH-CBD MARIJUANA STRAINS](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/high-cbd-marijuana-strains)\n\n### Go for Mr. Nice Marijuana Strain for a Chilled-Out Time\n\nAs its name suggests, Mr. Nice, sometimes known as Mr.Nice Guy, offers a most easygoing and pleasant experience. Mr. Nice is an indica-dominant strain that’s all about finding the sweet spot. It can be an ideal choice for someone who tends towards hyper and wants to be able to hang out with friends while watching the fireworks. It’s also great for consumers who want to manage pain or nausea during an event. A word of caution about Mr. Nice Guy: It can make you very sleepy, so don’t consume too long before your event or you may pass out before the fireworks even get started. \n\nPhoto credit: [Ray Hennessy](https://unsplash.com/@rayhennessy)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a [psychiatric ailment that affects nearly 8% of Americans](http://www.ptsd.ne.gov/what-is-ptsd.html). People from all walks of life can experience PTSD, as evidenced by the more than five million Americans between the ages of 18–54 suffering from the disorder today. Traumatic events such as car accidents, violent assaults, war, natural disasters and more can all cause PTSD. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Symptoms of PTSD\n\nPTSD is characterized by stress reactions that follow a traumatic event and persist longer than three months. These stress reactions can cause great agony and disrupt a person’s entire way of life if gone untreated. According to the [National Center for PTSD](https://www.ptsd.va.gov/), these reactions typically manifest as three types of symptoms: \n\n* **Reliving the event:** Recollecting the event includes nightmares and/or abrupt flashbacks to memories of the event. Flashbacks are almost always spurred by a trigger—something heard, smelled or seen that reminds a PTSD sufferer of the trauma they experienced. \n\n* **Avoiding situations reminiscent of the event:** People suffering from PTSD often go to extreme lengths to avoid stress reactions, including rearranging their entire life to avoid circumstances reminiscent of the traumatic event. If the event happened in their home, they might move. If it happened in a car, they may stop driving. If it happened while walking on the street, they might not leave their home altogether. People suffering from PTSD also often steer clear of loud noises, crowded places and sleep to avoid nightmares. \n\n* **Negative changes in beliefs and feelings:** PTSD can go so far as to make a person alter their beliefs and feelings. People who were once socially active may begin to isolate themselves from friends and family. In some of the most extreme cases, PTSD patients can become paranoid and distrustful of the world at large and all of the people in it. \n\nRELATED: [TOP 5 LIFESTYLE CHANGES TO HELP COMBAT PTSD](https://hellomd.com/articles/top-5-lifestyle-changes-to-help-combat-ptsd) \n\n### Top 5 Cannabis Strains for Treating Symptoms of PTSD\n\nBecause PTSD is a psychiatric disorder that involves many of the symptoms that cannabis has proven to be effective in managing, medical marijuana’s popularity as a PTSD treatment is on the rise. Although much more research must be done, a handful of strains have been successful in managing anxiety, depression, sleeplessness, nightmares and other debilitating symptoms that come with PTSD. \n\n`embed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUJ13-kqsRU`\n\n#### 1. Blue Dream\n\n[Blue Dream](https://hellomd.com/strains/blue-dream) is one of the most popular cannabis strains in legal marijuana states across the country. Luckily, its popularity also makes it one of the most widely available strains out there. It’s a perfectly balanced hybrid strain known for its euphoric and long-lasting high that’s both welcoming enough for cannabis newcomers and pleasant enough for even the most experienced consumers. \n\nFor those dealing with PTSD, Blue Dream’s euphoric and mellow high is known for having a positive effect on mood, especially for those with anxiety and depression. Blue Dream is a good marijuana strain to choose for managing symptoms of PTSD during the day. \n\n#### 2. Harlequin\n\n[Harlequin](https://hellomd.com/strains/harlequin) is a specialty cannabis strain bred for its consistently high cannabidiol (CBD) content. Unlike many high-CBD marijuana strains, Harlequin still has a decent amount of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), with a CBD to THC ratio of 5:2 in almost every Harlequin plant. This ratio is ideal for those living with PTSD because the high CBD content can have mood-stabilizing effects, while the THC can help fend off the nightmares that often terrorize PTSD sufferers. Harlequin is a great strain for medicating during the day or night.\n\n#### 3. Headband\n\n[Headband](https://hellomd.com/strains/headband) is an indica-dominant hybrid rich in THC (around 20%) that manifests in a strong mind and body high. Its potent THC level is good for relaxing the mind and can help those suffering from PTSD to skip [the stage of sleep where most dreams and nightmares occur](https://hellomd.com/articles/does-cannabis-reduce-rem-sleep-and-your-ability-to-dream), and sail into deep sleep instead. \n\nHeadband is probably best used in the late afternoon or before bed. Keep in mind that many say the effects of this strain can take up to 20 minutes to fully appear. \n\n#### 4. Durban Poison\n\n[Durban Poison](https://hellomd.com/strains/durban-poison) is a high-energy cannabis sativa strain known for its clear-headed and productive high. Durban Poison has been reported to help with social anxiety, energizing people who would usually feel burdened by social interactions. Sometimes PTSD can cause people to withdraw from social situations and friendships in general, and Durban Poison could be a natural way of treating that symptom.\n\nWhen consuming Durban Poison, keep it mind that it’s a pure sativa strain. An increased heart rate is likely, which some cannabis consumers may not enjoy. When a high dose is introduced to a cannabis newbie or someone not used to consuming sativa strains, Durban Poison can even cause paranoia. And since paranoia is already something that PTSD patients can suffer from, exacerbating the problem isn’t productive. If you’re going to try this marijuana strain, take it slow at the beginning and work your way up to a higher dose over time. \n\n#### 5. ACDC\n\n[ACDC](https://hellomd.com/strains/acdc) is a high-CBD marijuana strain ideal for use during the day when focus, calm and productivity are needed. Originating from the popular marijuana strain [Cannatonic](https://hellomd.com/strains/cannatonic), ACDC has a 20:1 CBD to THC ratio. This ratio allows the strain to impart increased productivity and relaxation of the mind and body—all without causing the dramatic effects a high-THC cannabis strain might bring on. \n\nACDC is an excellent place to start for those PTSD sufferers who are new to marijuana. And for those who are experienced with cannabis. but may be having trouble staying focused at home, work or school due to a traumatic event, ACDC is an ideal daytime medical marijuana option. \n\nIf you have experience using cannabis to treat PTSD symptoms, we’d love to hear what works for you in the comments below. \n\nPhoto credit: [Ethan Sykes](https://unsplash.com/@e_sykes) \n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. This cannabis strain’s sedating effects may even be a boon for those prone to overthinking—Grape Ape is used by the folks at CannaAthlete, a community of athletes who use cannabis during training, for just this reason. According to Jean Paul Ghazeleh-Aceves, the organization’s founder, this strain’s high myrcene content can calm the mind and allow users to fully engage in their workout. \n\nDo you have a cannabis strain that you like to use when working out? Athletes of many sports resort to both legal and illegal means to boost performance and recuperate—sometimes with dire consequences. As the stigma surrounding cannabis slowly dissipates and as knowledge of its benefits continues to spread, it comes as no surprise that athletes are now using marijuana to aid in their training and recovery practices. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### How Do Athletes Enhance Their Performance & Recovery? \n\nEnhancement methods for athletes usually focus on either the physical or mental aspects of performance. Physically, athletes may adopt simple lifestyle changes like eating a high protein diet and supplementing with vitamins—or they may turn to more involved measures like hypoxic training, which makes the cardiovascular system more efficient by forcing the body to work out in low oxygen conditions. \n\nAthletes may also take supplements to improve their mental state and boost focus. Caffeine is a popular, legal and easily accessible way to increase alertness, yet some athletes may turn to amphetamines or other illegally acquired substances, which can have severe side effects like organ failure and nerve damage. \n\nRecovering quickly after intense workouts or after injuries is key for athletes—especially professionals whose livelihoods depend on the performance and the wellness of their bodies. Traditional methods of recovering from minor sports injuries include rest, icing, massage and using compression garments. For professional athletes, methods of recovery can be more extreme. They may undergo surgery to repair torn tissue, and many are prescribed opioids in order to cope with pain. \n\nOpioid misuse in professional sports has gained much attention recently, with former and current NFL players admitting to excessive opioid use. A [2011 study surveyed 644 retired NFL players](http://www.drugandalcoholdependence.com/article/S0376-87161100002-0/fulltext)—52% of those interviewed used opioids during their career, with 71% reporting misuse. In addition, 15% of those reporting misuse during their career reported current misuse of opioid pain medications. \n\n### How Can Cannabis Aid Sports Performance & Recovery?\n\nAn increasing number of athletes are using cannabis to enhance their performance due to its ability to:\n\n* enhance focus.\n* reduce anxiety.\n* eliminate feelings of fatigue. \n\nPlenty of anecdotal and preliminary research exists to support using cannabis for these purposes, although studies aren’t specific to sports enhancement. For example, adults with ADHD often medicate with cannabis because it helps them relax and focus—some even prefer it over prescription medications. A study that came out earlier this year found [preliminary evidence supporting cannabis use for ADHD](http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0924977X17302377).\n\nMeanwhile, [CBD has been shown to have anti-anxiety properties](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22729452) by [mediating receptors in the body’s endocannabinoid system](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4604171/). And finally, those with conditions that can lead to fatigue, like depression and stress, often report that using cannabis can energize them and help them function. While not traditionally thought of as an energizing substance, several cannabis strains are known specifically for giving users a boost—among them are Durban Poison, Green Crack and Ghost Train Haze. \n\nRELATED: [THE 420 GAMES CELEBRATES ATHLETES, HEALTHY LIVING & CANNABIS](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/567715092829830008000034/the-420-games-celebrates-athletes-healthy-living-and-cannabis)\n\nCannabis’s anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties can help athletes recover from training and injury, and its powerful pain-fighting abilities are already being advocated by those seeking alternatives to opioids. Athletes looking to recuperate after an intense workout tend to use CBD for its anti-inflammatory properties. [CBD plays a part in how our bodies process pain](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28826543), and there’s already a large body of preclinical evidence that can vouch for the molecule’s ability to treat different acute, inflammatory and neurological pain. \n\nCannabis can also work in concert with opioids to magnify the pain-relieving properties of these narcotics, leading to overall reduced opioid use. In fact, cannabinoids are so effective in fighting pain that some athletes have turned to cannabis in lieu of opioids—regardless of whether their sport deems its use legal. Many studies, including one HelloMD conducted with UC Berkeley have found that a [high percentage of people regard cannabis as effective or more effective than opioids in pain management](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/595413ae914ae4001b40307a/hellomd-and-uc-berkeley-release-study-on-cannabis-use-as-a-substitute-for-opioid-and-non-opioid-based-pain-medication). Given all of these reports, it comes as no surprise that pro athletes are also using cannabis in this manner. \n\nAnother property of cannabis that makes it especially useful in contact sports is neuroprotection. Both CBD and THC have shown neuroprotective properties in various studies, but the exact mechanism of how these molecules help preserve brain cell function and structure needs to be further studied. Researchers cite the many ways this might occur: from activation of CB1 and CB2 receptors to direct action on nerve cells. A 2017 review article concluded that [phytocannabinoids showed therapeutic promise for traumatic brain injuries](https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fphar.2017.00069/full), further cementing reasons why this plant is so popular among NFL players—many of whom suffer from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a type of degenerative brain disease that arises from repeated impacts to the head. \n\n### How Can Cannabis Be Integrated Into a Training & Recovery Regimen?\n\nCannabis can complement many traditional and holistic training approaches as well as supplement a recovery regimen. It’s typically easier to use cannabis for recovery than it is for performance. This is because athletes using cannabis as part of a training strategy must consider many different mental and physical factors. \n\nWhen used properly, cannabis can help athletes relax and focus during workouts and competitions. For VapeXhale Founder [Seibo Shen](https://www.hellomd.com/people/569c5569aadede0008000012/seiboshen/questions/following), a jiu-jitsu fighter and strength trainer for combat athletes, cannabis allows his clients to be “supple leopards”—calm, yet also dynamic and ready to spring into action. \n\nSeibo works closely with athletes to fine-tune a regimen that works best for their body. He puts an emphasis on getting his clients to establish athletic goals and then uses cannabis to help them zero in on those goals. “Weed brings you back to a child's mind,” he says. “You see something interesting and your attention focuses on that interesting thing. If we make that thing your competition—that's when we increase performance. And it's not just the weed—it's the full process.”\n\nSeibo has managed to develop a pre-workout routine that addresses a person’s unique biochemistry. Before every session, athletes in Seibo’s gym partake in a five-minute yoga breathing exercise after which the athletes microdose caffeine and consume a landrace sativa strain. The yoga breathing exercise, which is typically “Breath of Fire,” a kundalini breathing technique, brings the whole class into a consistent mindset. “That way when we administer the medicine, people aren’t just super high and caffeinated, while other people are lethargic,” he says. \n\nIntegrating cannabis into a recovery regimen is much simpler: Athletes experiment to figure out how to harness cannabis’s anti-inflammatory and pain-fighting properties to suit their needs. For athletes who are using opioids to cope with pain, cannabis can either supplement opioid use or replace the drugs altogether. Sleep is one of the most important factors in helping the body heal, but it’s often disrupted for those in pain—cannabis, with its analgesic and sleep-inducing qualities, can be especially beneficial for athletes. \n\n\n### Sativas & High CBD Products Tend to Be Athlete Favorites\n\nEvery individual is different, but based on research and anecdotal evidence from athletes who use cannabis in their training regimens, here are some generalizations that can serve as a good jumping-off point for those interested in incorporating cannabis into their fitness routine. \n\nTo encourage focus and energize yourself before a workout, a sativa works best—Seibo uses the landrace sativa Red Congo to help his clients hone their focus. Other sativa strains known for their uplifting effects are [Durban Poison](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7cb16cd520d60009f4f4a3), the “espresso of cannabis strains”; [Green Crack](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7cc89cd520d60009f4f4a8), whose name speaks for itself; and [Harlequin](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a9d9ad8fdb6dd00088d0cf1), whose high CBD content is a good fit for those who want to avoid THC. \n\nAthletes like to use high CBD products or strains to help them recover after workouts or injuries, while indica-dominant THC edibles can also help athletes sleep, leading to faster recovery times. If you’re feeling a lot of pain and want immediate relief, vaping is the best method of consumption, as most athletes usually avoid smoking due to the irritation it can cause to the throat and lungs. Edibles and tinctures provide longer-lasting relief, but may take a while to kick in. \n\nPhoto credit: [Justin Ng](https://unsplash.com/@justinng)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Most of us experience lethargy at one point or another, whether it stems from lack of sleep, illness or depression. That lethargy can make it hard to get out of bed and be productive throughout the day. And it can make it difficult to concentrate or stay awake.\n\nWhile caffeine is probably the most popular stimulant used around the world to combat fatigue, cannabis can be just as—if not more—effective.
