Marijuana flowers are highly varied and versatile. You can choose from a wide medley of strains and use the flower in so many different ways.\n\nAnd yet cannabis concentrates may boast even more variety, since many kinds of concentrates can be made from any given flower. In this article, we’ll go over how concentrates are made, how to use them and why some patients prefer concentrates when treating their conditions or symptoms. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Types of Cannabis Concentrates\n\nCannabis flowers are rich with cannabinoids and terpenes, which give the plant its medicinal effects. When these flowers are processed to extract their essential oils, their active ingredients become much more concentrated. The result—you guessed it—is a cannabis concentrate. There are so many different types of concentrates available. Walking into a dispensary, you’ll likely see a collection of concentrates that includes many colors, textures, consistencies and presentations. You may also see a number of names used to describe these concentrates, such as: \n\n* extract\n* oil\n* wax\n* dabs\n* shatter\n* rosin\n* hash\n* kief\n* honey\n\nThis variety is partly due to differences in the flowers used for each product, but is primarily based on how the concentrates were made. \n\n\n\n### Cannabis Extractions Using Chemical Solvents\n\nConcentrates are made in a variety of ways. In recent years, chemical extractions have grown in popularity, so much so that these days most concentrates are made using some kind of chemical solvent. BHO, or butane hash oil, is one of the most popular concentrated cannabis extracts; it’s made by using butane, but you can also find products made with chemicals like:\n\n* propane\n* isopropyl alcohol\n* ethanol\n* hydrocarbons\n* carbon dioxide\n\nThese chemical solvents produce concentrates in a variety of colors—from clear to amber—and textures—from liquidy or sticky like taffy to hard and brittle or dry and crumbly. \nUnfortunately, many of these solvents have known health risks. While there are processes to remove the chemical solvents from the resulting extract, not all manufacturers have the skill or equipment to fully purge these chemicals. In states where testing regulations are lax or nonexistent, cannabis extracts may still contain harmful residual solvents. \n\n### Non-Chemical Cannabis Extraction Methods\n\nTo avoid the risks posed by the presence of chemical solvents, many patients choose to use extracts that haven’t been processed with chemicals. The most historical methods, involving the production of kief and hash, use natural resources like water and movement to extract cannabinoids from the plant.\nKief has a light powdery consistency and is made by filtering cannabis pollen through a screen. Meanwhile, hash uses water to remove the potent components found in the plant and usually comes out as a darker concentrate with a consistency that can be sticky like taffy or dry with a dirt-like appearance. \n\nRosin, a third method that doesn’t involve the use of chemicals, is a more recent innovation that involves using pressure and heat to squeeze the essential oils from the cannabis plant. Rosin, like extracts processed chemically, can come in many colors and textures—from hard and brittle to a liquidy oil. \n\n### Ways You Can Use Cannabis Concentrates\n\nYou can use concentrates in almost every way that you can consume the cannabis flower. They can be smoked, vaped or turned into infused products like edibles and topicals. Patients often use different tools to smoke or vape concentrates than they would when smoking or vaping flower. \n\nThe easiest way to enjoy a concentrate these days is with a prefilled cartridge. These ready-to-go cartridges fit onto most e-pens or vaping batteries, and are already filled with concentrates. All you have to do is push a button and inhale the vaporized medicine.\n\n[You can find our demo on using e-pens here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3vM64Ga7sc).\n\nOther electronic vaping devices are designed so that you can refill them with any concentrate you have on hand. If you want to smoke your concentrate, you may find the easiest way to do so is by adding it in with flower. You can also roll extracts into a joint or add concentrate to the bowl of a pipe or bong to boost the cannabis’s potency. \n\nMore advanced patients who want a higher dosage of cannabis may find dab rigs a good way to either vape or smoke your concentrate (depending on the temperature you’ve set the dab rig at).\n\n### Why Patients Go With Concentrates vs. Other Forms of Marijuana\n\nPatients choose concentrates for a number of reasons. Some folks favor e-pens for their ease of use and convenience. Using a pre-filled vape cartridge is one of the simplest ways to medicate. It makes medicating a quick and discreet process, fitting neatly in a pocket or purse. \n\nPatients needing a large and quick-acting dose of cannabis—to get relief from their symptoms or conditions—may lean towards using dab rigs. Concentrates allow patients to take in more cannabinoids, with less of the plant material that comes along with flower. This translates into getting a more potent dose of medicine without having to inhale as much smoke or vapor. \n\nOther patients simply prefer the effects they get with certain types of concentrates. For example, hash can often have more sedative effects than flower, so some might use it before bed to get sleepy. I put hash or an indica rosin on my joints every night before bed. I grew up in Santa Cruz mountains - we were outdoor kids. When I was very little I loved making flower petal water by soaking fragrant flowers to infuse the essential oils into the water.  There is an innate trust and connection to the power of plants and herbal medicine that has always thrived in me. Plants have always been my friends.\n\n### What’s your background as an herbalist?\n\nWhen I spent about a year on the island of Crete in Greece I completely fell in love with herbal medicinal studies. Malotíra (mountain tea) and Faskómilo (Sage) had me hooked. I couldn't get enough of the very powerful Mediterranean herbs of Crete. I snuck loads back with me! During that time, I discovered the herbalist Juliette de Beracley Levy. Her wild and enchanting stories of traveling through the Mediterranean with practically just a few sprigs of herbs to keep her and her children free of ailments or disease completely fascinated me. I moved to California from New York City in 2008 and I immediately started working as cannabis trimmer. Working with cannabis after working with other herbs felt like an honor. \n\nThe farmers I worked for loved my work ethic and enthusiasm and invited me be a part of the cold water hash team. I helped develop a larger scale production system for ice water hash. We experimented with a lot of machinery and I found that using my hands worked the best, producing the greatest yield and the greatest quality. \n\n### What inspired you to create Emerald Alchemy? \n\nI’ve always fiercely loved my independence, autonomy and a good thrilling adventure. Working for myself just makes sense and the challenge of creating a business keepsme engaged with that independent, creative and edgy young spirit there.\n\nThe name Emerald Alchemy came to me in 2013 after I harvested my first crop of high CBD AC/DC strain. ‘Emerald’ represents the heart and ‘Alchemy’ represents the powerful transformational shift that happens when we act out of love from the heart. I believe our most powerful medicine is loving kindness. It is such a special treat to be an organic cannabis farmer because cannabis is so extremely communicative and receptive. I feel like truly farming cannabis in alignment with nature you must get in touch with an innate intuitive knowing that is very spiritual. While we are farming cannabis we are also farming healthy soil ecology and farming ourselves as healthy stewards of the craft. Training staff to care for cannabis gardens is teaching an art. To be fully engage with the changing weather, microclimates, soil ecology and the fast paced cycles of flowering cannabis varieties is a beautiful spiritual dance. I’m a sun lover! I like to grow in beds outside with hoop houses over them. I do year round cultivation. I always get annoyed when we have to use supplemental light. A lot of hiccups happen with artificial light but it’s good for freshness of product and business to grow year round.\n\nOne of the cool things about my process is I’ve figured out a way to save all the excess hash water and feed it back to the plants. That’s one of the best foods you can feed your plants because all those phytonutrients and water soluble terpenes are in the water. \n\n### What strains do you grow? \n\nI grow quite a lot of the 20:1 AC/DC strain. I really love the 3:1 Cannatonic strain. I grew Orange Cookies strain last year. I always schedule in the AC/DC strain and depending on what is available to me from my colleagues nurseries or what mother plants I am cultivating.\n\n### Why do you grow CBD strains?\n\nOnce I was educated about the medicinal benefits of CBD, I was all in and I made it my mission. I started hearing about CBD around 2011 and I’m very sensitive to THC, so it was so exciting to me when I tried a CBD flower. I found the genetics which was really hard to get back then so I had the specialist Lawrence Ringo introduce me to the right people.\n\n### How is your cold water hash prepared? \n\nMy process is entirely handmade. We use no machinery at all. With hand-stirred hash, it’s all about having a holistic relationship at every step of the process so we can guarantee the quality of the product.\n\nIt’s quite an experience to make hash on my farm. We wear enormous thick gloves up to our shoulder and rubber waterproof goulashes for the ice agitation portion of the process. The engagement that comes with completely handmade processes allows for customizing each batch of hash to the variety and signature of the individual plant material. It’s totally an art!\n\n### How do you formulate your tinctures? What makes them different than others?\n\nFormulating tinctures is like writing poetry or music. Creating herbal combinations involves an incredible amount of knowledge and I do a lot of research before I decide on a specific formula melody. Each herb wants to be extracted in it’s own way. The ethanol I use for extraction is certified organic made from organic grapes. I think what sets me apart is that I am creating works of art. Therefore each formula and product I create stands apart for it uniqueness.\n\n### What is the story behind your cannabis elixirs.\n\nThe Elixir Collection is infused with a micro dose of cannabis in order to balance out the expression of the other herbs in the formula. The Elixirs are designed to work as a holistic support with cannabis as one of the integral herbs in the formula. Cannabis has such a dominant expression I choose to lower the dosing simply to achieve harmony in the formula.\n\nThe Elixirs are incredible in an evening libation for a nightly healing ritual. These crystals are called kief, and they're the external resin pockets that contain many of the cannabinoid compounds that make marijuana the incredible plant that it is.\n\nHere's what consumers need to know about the origin, purpose, extraction and uses of kief.\n\n### Marijuana's Trichomes: the Building Blocks of Kief\n\nWhile it may not be common knowledge, kief is only one part of a complex system known as a trichome. Trichomes, also known as \"hairs,\" are used by many plants for many purposes. Some carnivorous plants—the Venus flytrap, for example—use trichomes as triggers that allow them to sense when prey is near before trapping and consuming it.\n\nWhen it comes to the marijuana plant, however, trichomes are used for self-defense and self-preservation. The trichomes on the marijuana plant deter predators by producing psychoactive chemicals that disorient them, thus preventing these predators from consuming the entire plant. To further ensure the plant's survival, the smell of the resin produced by the trichomes attracts insects that can pollinate the plant and spread its seeds throughout a given area.\n\n### What Is Kief & How Do You Extract It?\n\nKief is a highly psychoactive cannabis compound with multiple medicinal uses. People who enjoy concentrates but find them cost-prohibitive often use kief to produce similar experiences at a much lower cost.\n\nKief must be processed before it can be consumed. This is because the resin glands of the marijuana plant contain terpenes (aromatic compounds) as well as cannabinoids. The kief crystals must be separated from the rest of the plant material in order to ensure their purity and get them ready for consumption. Fortunately, this process is easy to do at home.\n\nTo extract kief from the rest of the marijuana plant, most consumers use a multi-chamber herb grinder. This setup allows the kief to get sifted through a series of increasingly fine screens, resulting in a powerful and pure product. Some consumers prefer making their own kief-extraction setup by building a set of layered screens to use as homemade sifters.\n\nCannabis consumers should keep in mind, however, that kief generally measures anywhere from 75–125 microns, so it's important to use at least four layers of ultra-fine mesh screens (between 80–270 lines per inch) in order to produce a pure product. Consumers should also know that, unlike other marijuana products, pure kief is generally white. Kief that’s green is likely contaminated by a fair amount of plant matter, so it won’t produce the same strong experience as a pure kief product will.\n\n### Turning Kief From Cannabis Into Hash\n\nOnce extracted, kief can be used for a variety of things. The most popular use of the product, however, is hash. Hash is essentially kief that has undergone a heating and pressurization process before being turned into a pliable ball or brick.\n\nHash is generally more potent than other kinds of marijuana products are. This means consumers can ingest less of it while still enjoying an intense experience. When kief is heated and pressurized, the resin glands within it rupture, causing the kief to undergo changes in color, taste and effects.
