In fact, some of the farms the California-based company works with supply produce to Michelin-starred restaurants.\n\nAs a result, Juna’s products—specifically its Nude Hemp CBD tincture—contain a cornucopia of active floral-botanical compounds including antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, terpenes, vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients. As well, the company, founded by former pastry chef and chocolatier Jewel Zimmer, lab tests all of its product to ensure a clean, consistent experience.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nAsked why she has a hemp CBD product as part of her offerings, Jewel says, “Hemp was and is more approachable to the consumer. … if you’re like me and choose a full-spectrum hemp product, you will get the other 80-plus beneficial botanical active ingredients that the plant offers.”\n\nHelloMD interviewed Jewel to find out more about how she started Juna as well as why its hemp CBD, which ships nationwide, can help with issues ranging from inflammation and pain to anxiety and acne.\n\n### Tell us more about Juna, in particular your hemp line. What’s the philosophy that the company is built on?\n\n**Jewel Zimmer:** Juna hemp is inspired by the blurring of boundaries between beauty, wellness, food and pleasure. Coming from a food background, understanding the source of any ingredient is paramount—who’s farming, how are they farming, the terroir, the seeds, everything.\n\nThis helps us understand the quality of the product, including aroma, taste and efficacy, before it even goes to the lab or onto the plate. What’s also important is truly understanding the capabilities and chemical structure of the ingredient: What can we do with it, and what effect will that have on the ingredient itself, the product and the consumer.\n\nRELATED: [WHAT IS HEMP & WHAT IS IT USED FOR?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56dfbf5fab06d8000c000076/what-is-hemp-and-what-is-it-used-for)\n\n### How did you transition from being a fine-dining pastry chef, making pastries and artisanal chocolates, into creating products in the cannabis industry?\n\n**JZ:** Honestly, I transitioned out of the restaurant world and into the chocolate world more seriously when I became a mother. It didn't make sense to raise a baby \"on table 25\" in the dining room all day. I had a passion for chocolate, so I launched my own company with the same values and principles I used when I was a pastry chef: celebrating the ingredient inside and out. Making sure every piece of its composition—from the aroma, flavor and texture—were highlighted.\n\nBut I took it a step further with chocolate and worked with a chemist in France to extract the naturally occurring botanical actives, mood enhancers and polyphenol antioxidants from the cacao bean. I then emulsified them back into couverture chocolate, reclaiming cacao's botanical purpose. I launched nationally with Barneys New York, and from there I had a cult following for activated chocolate from here to Japan. I was essentially the Moon Juice of chocolate in 2009.\n\nIn 2015, when cannabis edibles started to be more readily available in California, I started to see the plant as a botanical—something I could introduce to others as a wellness supplement. But still, in 2015, cannabis still had a strong stoner stereotype, and a lot of people were apprehensive at the idea of looking at cannabis as a daily supplement.\n\nSo, I spent the next year and a half researching and learning as much as I could about the plant in every way. This was all in an effort to design a product that celebrated the botanical actives in the cannabis plant the way I had celebrated the botanicals in cacao, while also making sure it was approachable to an emerging consumer.\n\n### Tell us about your tincture called “Nude” that’s cannabidiol (CBD) derived from hemp. Why did you decide to create a hemp-derived tincture in addition to your tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) tinctures?\n\n**JZ:** I realized during a few months of sampling my THC products with diverse groups in the San Francisco Bay Area that the majority of our groups were curious, but apprehensive about using cannabis. They needed to know they could function at work, home, with their kids and so on. So most people were requesting CBD products because they were non-psychoactive, and yet they were still experiencing a lifted and calm sensation with CBD.\n\nThe second piece was that almost no one wanted to shop in a dispensary and were on the fence with delivery services. A few members of our group had ordered from reputable cannabis delivery companies where a young “kid” in a beat-up Honda would show up with a package. It felt strange to them.\n\nThe same question kept coming up: \"Are you sure I can’t just buy this CBD at the spa or on your website—basically anywhere but a dispensary?”\n\nAnd that’s when I started to explore hemp CBD. Hemp was and is more approachable to the consumer from a purchasing experience if that consumer didn’t or couldn’t have a dispensary experience. The compound CBD is the same whether it comes from cannabis or hemp, so this took me back to sourcing: exploring states that had mastered hemp farming and the process of finding quality, pure origin, whole-plant hemp oil rich in CBD. \n\n### What are the main benefits of your Nude hemp CBD tincture?\n\n**JZ:** CBD is known for its potent anti-inflammatory benefits. It activates internal receptors to release the body’s stressors, engage the mind, lift the spirit and promote overall well-being. Its entire job is to create homeostasis in the body—so the CBD works where it’s needed. Most people feel a focused calm when they take our Nude hemp CBD tincture. \n\n### Is CBD derived from hemp comparable to CBD that comes from the cannabis marijuana plant? What's the difference?\n\n**JZ:** The hemp plant itself is a variety of cannabis sativa, but its slightly different in physical and chemical structure. It naturally produces almost no THC and is also very fibrous, making it great for use in other industries such as textile.\n\nIt’s important to keep in mind that no cannabis or hemp plant is created equal. Much like grapes for wine, terroir and variety (seed strain) change the cannabinoid and terpene footprint, offering a different physical and mental experience. \n\n### What hemp-derived products do you like and why?\n\n**JZ:** With hemp CBD, the product possibilities are endless. It’s great when taken internally for inflammation, pain and mood. But it’s also incredible when used topically. It’s known for its an anti-acne properties , and it helps reduce redness, puffiness and fine lines in your skin.\n\nAnd if you’re like me and choose a full-spectrum hemp product, you will get the other 80-plus beneficial botanical active ingredients that the plant offers. After a day on your feet, this is the best topical massage ingredient there is.\n\n### Can anyone from anywhere purchase the Nude hemp CBD tincture?\n\n**JZ:** Hemp CBD is currently available in most states in the U.S. as long as it’s lab tested and is proven to have less than .03% THC. This assures the functionality of the product.\n\n### Do you have advice for anyone who wants to purchase CBD derived from hemp? \n\n**JZ:** Please read labels carefully. Make sure the products you buy are transparent about not using chemicals, and keep your eye on two things: full-spectrum, or whole-plant, extracts vs. isolates. They are very different and will have different effects.\n\nAn isolate is just CBD, with all of the other actives in the plant having been distilled out. This is necessary for some products like water and even some topicals.\n\nBut if you want to experience the entire hemp plant and the other 80-plus beneficial botanical active ingredients the plant offers, go for the whole plant, or full spectrum. Especially in this case, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.\n\nPhoto credit (left image): [Enric Martinez](https://www.flickr.com/photos/runlevel0/)","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.36986301369863,"src":"/static/c644628fc0b58dc9d1d0df18d3326df7/14b42/cef8a1a258368c9e5c369d4555bea9f8.jpg","srcSet":"/static/c644628fc0b58dc9d1d0df18d3326df7/f836f/cef8a1a258368c9e5c369d4555bea9f8.jpg 200w,\n/static/c644628fc0b58dc9d1d0df18d3326df7/2244e/cef8a1a258368c9e5c369d4555bea9f8.jpg 400w,\n/static/c644628fc0b58dc9d1d0df18d3326df7/14b42/cef8a1a258368c9e5c369d4555bea9f8.jpg 800w,\n/static/c644628fc0b58dc9d1d0df18d3326df7/35d50/cef8a1a258368c9e5c369d4555bea9f8.jpg 909w","srcWebp":"/static/c644628fc0b58dc9d1d0df18d3326df7/58556/cef8a1a258368c9e5c369d4555bea9f8.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/c644628fc0b58dc9d1d0df18d3326df7/61e93/cef8a1a258368c9e5c369d4555bea9f8.webp 200w,\n/static/c644628fc0b58dc9d1d0df18d3326df7/1f5c5/cef8a1a258368c9e5c369d4555bea9f8.webp 400w,\n/static/c644628fc0b58dc9d1d0df18d3326df7/58556/cef8a1a258368c9e5c369d4555bea9f8.webp 800w,\n/static/c644628fc0b58dc9d1d0df18d3326df7/a5a5e/cef8a1a258368c9e5c369d4555bea9f8.webp 909w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2713-markdown","title":"CBD Oil vs. Hemp Oil: What’s the Difference?","slug":"cbd-oil-vs-hemp-oil-whats-the-difference","content":"Cannabidiol (CBD) is a cannabis compound that’s making headlines for its formidable healing properties. Many people find CBD oil to be a convenient and generally safe way to experience marijuana’s many benefits without psychoactive effects. But CBD oil is often confused with hemp oil, which is also made from a kind of cannabis, but is a very different substance. \n\nNow, a variety of products labeled as both CBD oil and hemp oil are available from hundreds of sources. But although hemp oil has healthful benefits, it’s typically—though not always—classed as a nutritional supplement that's not often as potent as CBD derived from whole-plant cannabis.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Hemp: Another Kind of Cannabis\n\nThere’s a [lot of confusion surrounding hemp and its more famous cousin, marijuana](https://www.projectcbd.org/guidance/cannabis-oil-vs-hemp-oil). This confusion has hobbled hemp production in the United States for nearly half a century. It’s also contributed to misunderstandings about the uses and benefits of products derived from various parts of the _Cannabis sativa_ plant. \n\nHemp and cannabis are both varieties of _Cannabis sativa_. They both contain common cannabis compounds and terpenes, including CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). But hemp, also referred to as industrial hemp, contains only trace amounts of THC—less than 0.3%. So, it has no psychoactive properties and can be sold even in places where cannabis is still illegal. \n\nHemp has been cultivated around the world for thousands of years for agricultural and industrial uses ranging from making rope and clothing to animal feed. Today it’s used for those and many other purposes including replacing petroleum products in paint and plastics, and as fuel and construction material. Like other nuts and seeds, hemp seeds are also rich in essential fatty acids and proteins, making them a popular nutritional supplement. \n\n### Hemp’s Relationship With the War on Drugs \n \nBut [hemp got caught up in the war on drugs](https://news.medicalmarijuanainc.com/hemps-current-legal-status-u-s/) that made cannabis a controlled substance of the highest order. In the early years of the 20th century, hemp and cannabis were both cultivated and processed legally in the United States. But the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 placed _Cannabis sativa_ on its Schedule 1, along with heroin and LSD. All of these substances are classified as having significant potential for abuse without any redeeming medical qualities. \n\nBecause hemp is just a variety of _Cannabis sativa_, it went right along with cannabis onto Schedule 1. This means that hemp cultivation and research are prohibited in the U.S. But an odd loophole in the Controlled Substances Act excluded seeds, stalks and the oil extracted from hemp. So, this is why you see products made from imported hemp for sale all over the country even though hemp cultivation is illegal. \n\n### CBD Oil & Hemp Oil Come From Different Sources\n\nThe leaves and flowers of the _Cannabis sativa_ plant contain the highest quantities of all its compounds, and that accounts for its medical and recreational effects. CBD oil extracted from these parts of the plant typically contains high levels of CBD, but it can also contain some THC. These oils are often called cannabis oils to distinguish them from oils that contain only CBD and have no psychoactive properties at all. \n\nHemp oil is made from hemp seeds and/or stalks of the plant. That’s why it can get around the restrictions of the Controlled Substances Act. But that’s also why it may not make the best medicine. The seeds and stalks—where the hemp oil comes from—don’t contain many cannabinoids. If hemp oil is naturally low in THC, it’s also a comparatively poor source of CBD. \n\n### CBD Oil & Hemp Oil Have Different Benefits \n\nBy its very nature, hemp oil does contain CBD, but it takes a lot of hemp to make oil with enough CBD to produce its well-documented effects. For this reason, hemp oil products generally don’t have the [anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and immune-boosting properties to the level that cannabis-derived CBD oil does](https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2018/04/23/604307015/anxiety-relief-without-the-high-new-studies-on-cbd-a-cannabis-extract). \n\nHemp oil does support immune health, and that’s why it’s widely sold as a nutritional supplement. Like other healthy oils, it contains the omega-3 fatty acids that help prevent oxidation in cells and contribute to the flexibility of the circulatory system. Hemp oil also contains omega-6 fatty acids and linoleic acid, which also act as antioxidants and benefit the cardiovascular system. \n\n### What About Side Effects & Risks With Cannabis Oil & Hemp Oil?\n\nHemp production and research in the U.S. are still restricted, so there’s limited information on its side effects and risks. But that could change with the passage of a new bill called the [Hemp Farming Act, proposed by Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY)](http://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-hemp-different-from-weed-2018-3). The bill seeks to legalize industrial hemp and classify it as an agricultural product. For now, most hemp oil products are manufactured outside the U.S., with varying levels of oversight and quality control. \n\nUnless you’re allergic to hemp or cannabis, [there are few reported side effects of consuming these oils](https://www.consumerhealthdigest.com/cbd-hemp-center/hemp-oil-side-effects.html). That said, hemp oil has a few extra risks, related largely due to the nature of the hemp plant itself and the way it’s often processed.\n\nBecause quality standards around hemp oil are limited, it can be hard to find out how much CBD is in a particular product—and the content can vary considerably from seller to seller. Hemp oil can also be processed using toxic substances such as ethanol, which can leave traces in the oil. The hemp plant itself can also absorb toxins and heavy metals from the soil too, and these things can also be passed along to consumers. \n\nRELATED: [CBD OIL: BREAKING THE STEREOTYPES OF CANNABIS](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55e12afb6539390006040000/cbd-oil-breaking-the-stereotypes-of-cannabis)\n\nLike hemp oil, [CBD oil can vary in its content of actual CBD](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/317221.php), and processing methods can also involve toxic substances. CBD oil can be professionally produced by leading cannabis laboratories using carbon dioxide under high pressure to isolate and extract oil from CBD-rich cannabis leaves.\n\nBut other methods can also introduce harmful chemicals such as ethanol and butane to the finished product. Because CBD oil production typically begins with high-CBD cannabis leaves and flowers, this kind of oil has a higher CBD content than hemp oils do, so it typically offers more of CBD’s potent healing benefits.\n\n### How to Use Hemp & CBD Oils\n\nYou can consume both CBD oil and hemp oil by itself, or you can add it to foods. Neither oil is recommended for cooking. These oils can also be added to a long list of topical creams, lotions and ointments. \n\nThough it may be labeled as CBD oil, hemp oil that contains CBD isn’t the same as CBD oil from cannabis. So, it’s important to read labels and research products carefully.\n\nPhoto credit: [Katherine Hanlon](https://unsplash.com/@tinymountain)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101]( https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56201c206430320006bb0000/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Most people are familiar with the effects of THC and CBD when it’s being consumed orally during smoking, vaping or eating edibles. The two primary compounds can relax the muscles, help reduce body pain, revive an ailing appetite and even help you get a good night’s sleep. Yet when used externally, those three compounds have properties that can help hydrate the skin, prevent or reduce wrinkles when used in facial oils and lotions as well as ease uncomfortable pain and get rid of tension in the body in topicals, bath bombs and massage oils.\n\n### The Cannabis Home Spa\n\nEven if you don’t make it onto the red carpet or live in a state where you can conveniently go to a spa that offer cannabis-infused services, you can still get a taste of what it’s like to get the canna-beauty treatment. Just like stay-cations, you can also reimagine a spa experience in your home with some products you may be able to find at your local dispensary and even some you can try to DIY at home.\n\nLight some candles, find something comfortable to wear and start planning how you incorporate some of these products into a luxurious day of pampering and self-care. \n\n### Facial Masks\n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/59b87cdfd5d69e1783948b21/embedded_images/59b87e75d5d69e14f0948b53/Screen_Shot_2017-09-12_at_5.38.10_PM.png) \n\nYou can buy or DIY a cannabis-infused facial mask that can help soften and brighten your skin. But do the benefits humans see from cannabis extend to their animal companions too? There isn’t an easy answer just yet – tight government restrictions limit cannabis research not only for human ailments, but also for veterinary medicine.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Animals Have Endocannabinoids\n\nThe human body is equipped with an extensive network of endocannabinoid receptors – cells that respond not only to cannabis-like molecules naturally produced by the body, but also to cannabis compounds such as THC and CBD. But research in the early 1990s, when the endocannabinoid system was discovered, revealed that any animal with a backbone, which includes not only mammals but also reptiles, birds, amphibians and fish, most likely have some form of that system as well. That made it possible to create animal models for studying the effects of cannabis, and those results could be extrapolated to humans, though not necessarily to other animals.\n\nRELATED: [WHAT IS THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system)\n\nThe fact that mammals and other vertebrates in general [have endocannabinoid receptors](http://www.petmd.com/dog/general-health/can-dogs-benefit-medical-cannabis) makes it likely that animals such as dogs, cats, or horses – and even fish and birds - could benefit from cannabis treatments in ways similar to humans. And it appears that they can – but getting and using cannabis for animals becomes complicated.\n\n`embed: https://www.instagram.com/p/BYy6CKhgBSD/`\n \n\n\n### Restrictions Hamper Research and Access\n\nVeterinarians and pet people alike have reported considerable [anecdotal evidence](https://www.rover.com/blog/medical-marijuana-for-dogs/)\nthat medical marijuana can help pets suffering from conditions like arthritis, seizures and cancer. In most of those cases, someone gave a beloved pet a dose of their own medical cannabis when it seemed that no other treatments for the animal’s condition were working – and that often led to either a cure for the condition or a significant reduction of symptoms.\n\nBut it isn’t [legal](https://www.avma.org/news/javmanews/pages/130615a.aspx)\nanywhere in the US for a veterinarian to prescribe medical marijuana for pets in distress. To date, 29 states and the District of Columbia have voted to legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes. In those states, it’s possible to buy a variety of cannabis products of varying strengths with a doctor’s referral. But veterinarians are generally prohibited from making the same kind of referral for their patients under any circumstances.\n\nEven veterinarians who advocate for medical cannabis for animals acknowledge that using it can be risky. Not enough research has been done to determine exactly how compounds like THC affect various animal species, or what dosage is best for creatures of different sizes and health conditions.\n\nOne reason for this, according to some veterinarians, is that the veterinary community has been slow to take an interest in cannabis for medicinal purposes. But another reason is one that has hampered broader research on the human applications of cannabis too: tight government regulations on all aspects of studying medical applications of cannabis.\n\nThe Drug Enforcement Administration still lists marijuana as a Schedule I drug, right up there with heroin, LSD and magic mushrooms in its most restricted classification, reserved for substances with a high potential for addiction and no demonstrated medical applications. That classification makes it difficult to conduct federally funded studies to demonstrate medical applications of cannabis for both people and pets. And relatively few veterinary schools and private researchers are proposing studies of their own to advance the use of medical marijuana for pets, even though existing evidence suggests that it could have [powerful benefits](http://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/cannabis-dog-can-help/)\n\n\n### CBD Products: Marijuana or Hemp? \n\nEven though medical cannabis may be hard to come by for pets, one of its compounds isn’t. THC is the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, and its most abundant compound. But cannabidiol, or CBD, is also plentiful, and it has no psychoactive properties. \n\nCBD is often used for treating conditions such as chronic pain, nausea and lack of appetite, and anxiety – and it’s widely available for treating animals with those conditions too. But there’s a catch. The CBD in medicinal products such as oils, salves, creams and treats that are marketed for animals comes from hemp, not from marijuana.\n\nThe marijuana plant, cannabis sativa, is home to over a hundred compounds that work together to provide its benefits. But only the buds, leaves and resin of strains that contain psychoactive THC make up what is usually understood as “marijuana.” \n\n`embed: https://www.instagram.com/p/BV2ociDgGqr/`\n\n\nHemp comes from cannabis sativa, too, but only from varieties that have no significant amounts of THC. Hemp does contain CBD, though, and that means it can be made into a variety of products that offer health benefits that are similar to those provided by true “medical marijuana.” \n\nSome studies suggest CBD and THC work best in combination, but hemp based CBD-alone products are freely marketed and sold without the restrictions, however many consider this to be a legal gray area. The ease of selling hemp based CBD products for animals has led to an upsurge in the number of pet health outlets offering them in a variety of forms.\n\nHemp based products are easily available, but that doesn’t mean they’re all of equal value, or even [safe](https://www.projectcbd.org/claws-and-effect-use-of-medical-marijuana-for-pets). Like dietary supplements, these products are not standardized, or monitored for quality. They can contain other ingredients, some toxic, and the strength can be highly variable. \n\n### Using Cannabis Safely For Pets\n\nCannabis medicines have been shown to help animals with many of the same conditions people have – anxiety, nausea, cancer, seizures and gastrointestinal problems, but resistance from mainstream veterinary practice and government restrictions on cannabis in general may make it hard for pet lovers to find the support and information they need to use cannabis effectively for their four legged friends.\n\nHolistic veterinarians and those experienced in complementary medicine can often offer information and guidance for the best ways to use cannabis products safely for an animal companion. It may take a while for veterinary research on cannabis to catch up with “human” medicine, but for any creature with a backbone, the benefits may well be the same.\n\nPhoto credit: [Alvan Nee](https://unsplash.com/photos/T-0EW-SEbsE)\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Dogs, like humans and all other mammals, have an endocannabinoid system, that is made up of receptors that process cannabinoids. It can be assumed, that much like humans, dogs produce endocannabinoids that are supplemented by cannabinoids in cannabis. There are thousands of anecdotal stories where people claim that cannabis is beneficial in helping dogs with conditions like pain, anxiety, inflammation, arthritis, and appetite loss.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Hemp Derived Dog Products\n\nAccessing whole plant cannabis, which requires a medical recommendation, may be a challenge for most people. As a result hemp derived pet treats are a viable alternative that have become increasingly popular. Hemp provides cannabinoids, including CBD, to dogs without the added THC that can potentially cause them distress. Some conditions in dogs, however are better treated with minimal amounts of THC, however dogs are extremely sensitive to the psychoactive cannabinoid. More people are now looking to buy whole plant cannabis products for their dogs in order to provide them more relief.\n\n### Whole Plant Cannabis or Hemp?\n\nThe issue of access to medical cannabis for pets has been raised in various states without much success. Nevada recently ruled that it would not allow veterinarians to prescribe cannabis to pets and an Arizona bill that would have also allowed pets to get a medical marijuana cards failed to even get a hearing from the Committee of Health and Human Services. There is, however, hope for a Florida bill that would allow researchers at the University of Florida to work with other veterinary researchers to look into how low THC, high CBD medical marijuana could benefit dogs with seizure disorders. \n\nA survey from the Journal of American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association found that out of the 632 people surveyed, 72% gave their dogs hemp based products and 64% of the people surveyed felt that the hemp products helped their pets in various ways. Some vets are speaking out regarding the potential benefits that cannabis may have for dogs. An Australian holistic veterinarian, Dr. Edward Bassingthwaighte, has found success treating dogs with cannabis for a variety of conditions and is a vocal proponent of cannabis for pets. He has treated dogs with conditions such as tumors, heart murmurs and arthritis with both CBD and THC, as well as cold pressed hemp oil with degrees of success.\n\n### Treating Medical Conditions\n\nWhat has become evident is that dog owners are buying whole plant and hemp products for their animals but they are also using their own medical cards to buy their pets medical cannabis. VetCBD provides dog owners with medical grade cannabis that is specifically formulated for dogs and cats. VetCBD makes a tincture that is formulated to help with seizures, nausea, lack of appetite, inflammation, pain, and a host of other medical conditions. The product is lab tested for potency and cleanliness and is found in dispensaries all across the state of California.\n\nAn extremely popular brand called Holistic Hound is a pet treat company started by Heidi Hill. With her 15 years experience, Heidi centered Holistic Hound on pet wellness and nutrition. \n\nHolistic Hound's dog treats come in 3 or 7 mg per bite. These treats won't make your dog feel high, but will ward off anxiety if your companion is jittery. \n\nOlder pets can benefit from the pain-relieving and organically grown hemp oil in each treat. The cannabinoids can reduce inflammation, aiding in arthritis or any chronic pain your dog may be experiencing. \n\nWhat distinguishes Holistic Hound is their mixture of medicinal mushrooms, a five mushroom blend of:\n\n* Reishi\n* Shiitake\n* Mesima\n* Poria\n* Turkey tail\n\nThe chicken flavored treats contain pasture-raised chickens from Wisconsin, while the lamb treats use grass-fed lamb from family farms in New Zealand. \n\nKeep in mind your dog's weight when figuring out how many treats to feed them. Start with a small amount and increase if you feel your dog needs it.\n\nCurrently, there is no formal scientific research on the effect of cannabis on dogs, so there is not any conclusive evidence of its benefits. There is clear anecdotal evidence, however, on how cannabis may benefit dogs with various conditions and improve the quality of their life. If you would be interested in looking more into how cannabis could benefit your dog, some holistic vets do use cannabis as part of their protocol, and it could be possible to locate one to assist you if you do not desire to start the process on your own. If you are looking to assist your dog with a medical condition and improve their quality of life, cannabis may be the answer to a healthy, happy dog.\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. These products can be sold on grocery store shelves because they have absolutely no psychoactive side effects.\n\nThese cannabis beauty products, like hemp lotion and hemp infused face cream, are really just mainstream version of what many topical cannabis companies have been doing for some time with either hemp or whole plant extracts. Some well known cannabis companies, like [Marley Natural](https://www.marleynatural.com), have even created topical product lines that can be sold outside of the purview of dispensaries. \n\n[![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/58ffb1b9324210003b61806f/embedded_images/58ffb1ba324210003b618070/Screen_Shot_2017-04-25_at_1.22.17_PM.png)](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/58e7c12a64027c0032663bbe/marijuana-belongs-on-your-face)\n[Aunt Zelda's](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/58e7c12a64027c0032663bbe/marijuana-belongs-on-your-face) is a product one of our HelloMD staff uses on her face and swear by.\n\nRELATED: [MARIJUANA BELONGS ON YOUR FACE](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/58e7c12a64027c0032663bbe/marijuana-belongs-on-your-face)\n\nMarley Natural produces a variety of cannabis products, including oil for vaporizers, pre-rolled joints, and whole flower cannabis products. Marley Natural, however, has also curated a skincare line made completely with hemp seed oil, so it can be sold outside of dispensary walls. The specially formulated skin care line includes soaps, lip balms, and various lotions, which are all full with hemp oil filled with omega 3s, omega 6s, vitamin E, and other compounds that keep skin in balance. \n\n### Beauty Products in Dispensaries\n\nBeauty products are even now popping up on dispensary shelves too, which often utilize CBD and may offer some medicinal value. These topical beauty products can help with issues such as inflammation or pain and they are a rising luxury trend, especially in high-end dispensaries. Often these dispensaries resemble a cross between an Apple store and an art gallery. \n\nAn example of a line of high-end beauty products infused with cannabis is the recently released line [Whoopi & Maya](http://whoopiandmaya.com). The collection, which is particularly designed for women during menstruation, was created by actor and cannabis advocate Whoopi Goldberg in collaboration with Maya Elisabeth, the founder of Om edibles. The topical line features luxurious products including a lavender bath soak and a body balm that ease discomfort associated with menstruation. \n\nCannabis’ presence in mainstream beauty products continues to help break down its stigma as a harmful drug. Hemp is a great way to introduce many skeptical people to cannabis, because the benefits of the plant can be separated from its ability to produce psychoactive side effects. The increasing amount of products shows cannabis’ growing appeal among the public because people are more open and willing to reach for these new beauty products that feature hemp leaves front and center on the packaging. \n\n### The Medical Community Says...\n\nThough the formal dermatologist community has not embraced cannabis yet, it may be soon on its way. Tamás Bíró, PhD, director of the immunology department at the University of Debrecen in Hungary has done research on the potential of cannabis at targeting the endocannabinoid system in and through the skin. He says, “the skin barrier, which is very important for moisture retention, sebum production, and sweat-gland function, as well as skincentric sensory functions such as pain and itch. But perhaps most important, it appears that the endocannabinoid system controls skin inflammation—so if an inflammatory or irritation challenge assaults the skin, the endocannabinoid system fights against it.” \n\n[A study recently conducted by Bíró](http://www.elle.com/beauty/a42274/higher-power-marijuana-beauty-products/) found that applying CBD to human skin cells prevented inflammation, showing great potential for its application as a topical anti-inflammatory. This study only further supports the large amounts of success that medical marijuana topicals have provided many people, including fighting against various pain and skin conditions. \n\nEventually, the mainstream dermatological community will start to take notice the positive results that cannabis topicals provide. [Dr. Adam Friedman](http://www.elle.com/beauty/a42274/higher-power-marijuana-beauty-products/), an associate professor of dermatology believes that the dermatology tide may turn in favor of cannabis soon, “I think that's going to change. Given that there is a wide array of skin conditions notorious for chronic inflammation and debilitating itch or pain, there are numerous potential applications. There's going to be an exponential increase in the attention paid to this in the derm world.” \n\nSimilar to issues cannabis faces in many other mainstream medical practices, concerns about questions like dosage and access to particular products will need to be addressed. As more research comes to the fore, clinicians may start to pay attention to the anecdotal stories brought to them by their patients. Eventually, the great potential for cannabis to be incorporated into both everyday beauty and medical dermatological products cannot be ignored.\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Depending on what your body needs each morning, you can also add different kinds of leafy greens and fresh or frozen fruits. To me, the flavors never get boring!\r\n\r\n### The Wonder of Hemp Seeds\r\n\r\nHemp has been deemed a bonafide superfood in the past few years as people have embraced its amazing qualities. Hemp is almost identical to cannabis, though it has a far lower quantity of cannabinoids, specifically the psychoactive one, THC. Hemp has been used just as long as cannabis to make products like rope and cloth, while more cannabinoid heavy strains were used as medical cannabis. Hemp and cannabis can be paired to create the ultimate breakfast smoothie that will help you power through your day filled with protein, fatty acids, antioxidants, and medication. \r\n\r\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\r\n\r\nLuckily, hemp seeds are sold right next to flax and chia seeds in health food stores. The seeds contain all 9 essential amino acids, including high levels of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are both essential to body functioning and contain lots of good fats. Hemp seeds are also packed full of protein, in just 3 tablespoons of hemp seeds there are 11 grams of protein and only 174 calories. They are also filled with trace minerals and dietary fiber to help keep you nourished and regular all day. \r\n\r\n### Different Ways to Add Cannabis\r\n\r\nYou can make our smoothie with different strains and forms of cannabis depending on what your desired effect is. Our smoothie can be made with your favorite tincture, ground cannabis, or fresh cannabis juice. Tinctures can be easily measured and blended into smoothies to help you get your daily dose of medication, or you can also grind a small amount of cannabis to blend into your smoothie, allowing you to choose your strain each morning depending on what effect you need. \r\n\r\nRELATED: [JUICING: THE NEXT CANNABIS HEALTH TREND](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-juicing-a-new-health-trend)\r\n\r\nRaw cannabis is also a great option to provide increased anti-inflammatory properties without any psychoactive effect. Fresh cannabis can be juiced each morning if you have access to a fresh supply of cannabis plants or you can buy frozen raw cannabis juice from a variety of specialty cannabis dispensaries, such as Herba Buena.\r\n\r\nHere is the basic recipe, which you can customize based on what you enjoy!\r\n\r\n### Ingredients:\r\n\r\n* 1/2 cup liquid of choice (coconut water for electrolytes, kefir for probiotics, hemp milk or milk of choice for creaminess)\r\n\r\n* 1 tbsp hemp seeds\r\n\r\n* 1 tsp flax or chia seeds\r\n\r\n* 1/2 cup leafy greens (spinach and kale are great choices)\r\n\r\n* 1/2 cup fruit of your choice (berries for antioxidants, bananas for potassium & fiber, citrus for vitamin C, pineapple or mango for sweetness, coconut for amino acids)\r\n\r\n* Your choice of cannabis (tincture, raw, cannabis oil, etc.) and according dosage\r\n\r\n* Other possible additions: collagen peptides, probiotic powder, protein powder are all great extra additions based on your preferences and goals!\r\n\r\n### How To Method:\r\n\r\nYou can simply place all the ingredients in a blender and blend, but I find that blending leafy greens with the liquid before adding the rest of the ingredients can assure a smoothie without small pieces of greens in it. Also, I love using frozen bananas (or avocados) in my smoothie because it creates a creamy and thick smoothie that reminds me of a healthy milkshake! \r\n\r\nIf you mix ingredients like berries and greens, you might have a slightly odd colored smoothie, so if you want a bright green smoothie stick to yellow and pale colored fruits to compliment the leafy greens. This makes about 16 oz.\r\n\r\n_____________________________________________________________________\r\n\r\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. This code regulates extracts, whether made from marijuana or hemp, separately then traditional cannabis plants and products. The code allows for cannabis extracts to be tracked and recorded separately than cannabis flowers, but technically does not change anything about the way they are represented or regulated. Marijuana extracts are still viewed as a Schedule I substance by the DEA, no matter if the extract is made from hemp or cannabis. This is a big deal as hemp based products, such as CBD extracts, are regularly sold across state lines on platforms such as Amazon.com.\r\n\r\nThere is a lot of confusion in relation to the recent report because many people do not understand if the regulation of extracts has been changed with the new code. This process of giving extracts a unique code, however, was first initiated in 2011. According to Russ Baer, a DEA spokesman, this recent move by the DEA is mostly administrative, allowing them to have a better handle on what is going on. It does not reflect any changes in DEA policy or how cannabis will be regulated going forward. Much of the confusion surrounding this recent news has come in anticipation of how the industry may change with the incoming Trump administration in January. The DEA completely denies any connection to the administration change and says it is simply assigning the new code to a particular category of cannabis products. \r\n\r\nRELATED: [OPEN LETTER TO JEFF SESSIONS](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/an-open-letter-to-jeff-sessions)\r\n\r\n### CBD Hemp Extracts\r\n\r\nCBD cannabis extracts have always been a grey area in the cannabis world because some are derived form hemp rather than marijuana. Hemp based CBD products are technically covered under this code, meaning that hemp CBD products fall under the category of a Schedule I substance. The DEA did make it clear, however, that this does not really change anything with how they plan on regulating cannabis extracts in states that have internally legalized marijuana, medically or recreationally. \r\n\r\nThe DEA claims it is working towards better understanding of the cannabis industry and how cannabinoids from marijuana could possibly have medicinal benefits. Baer, the [DEA spokesman even said](http://www.thecannabist.co/2016/12/15/dea-cbd-new-rule-marijuana-extracts/69550/), “(The rule change) recognizes that there is a potential medical benefit to some of the cannabinoids.” Though the DEA has put a positive spin on the issue, the marijuana industry as whole is still very skeptical of the move. Some worry it is a power move by the DEA as they attempt to control and regulate all cannabinoids, rather than just marijuana products. The new requirements on cannabis extracts does have the ability to criminalize certain people, like those transporting completely non-psychoactive CBD products. \r\n\r\n### DEA to Focus more on Opioids?\r\n\r\nThe DEA has reiterated, however, that it is focusing its efforts on major problems like the opioid epidemic, rather than targeting people based on small marijuana infractions. When the DEA chose to maintain marijuana’s status as a Schedule I substance, Baer made it clear that innocent cannabis use was not their first priority, “The nation is in the throes of an opioid epidemic, and it is there — not cracking down on offenses such as a mother transporting CBD oil for her daughter across state lines to Nebraska — where the DEA needs to allocate its resources”. \r\n\r\nAs of January 13 of 2017 all extracts with cannabinoids present will be [tracked by the new code](http://www.krcrtv.com/north-coast-news/dea-finalizes-new-cannbis-extract-laws-gives-hard-deadline-of-30-days/211798577) of 7350 and will not be allowed to cross state lines. There have also been indications that there will be a new licensure for people who produce and handle marijuana extracts, since it is now seen as a separate substance than cannabis, but that remains to be seen. As of now, the DEA maintains that there has been no changes to their policy other than an administrative clarification that allows for easier internal tracking of cannabis extracts within the country. \r\n\r\n________________________________________________________\r\n\r\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. The marijuana industry is embracing the full potential of cannabis by moving towards the world of holistic health and wellness. Marijuana is slowly taking its rightful place in the ranks as not only an extremely effective medication, but as a healthy food product as well. \r\n\r\nOften the first things that come to peoples’ minds when they think about cannabis edibles is candy such as gummy bears, brownies, and chocolate. There are many companies, however, who are looking to change the stigma that is often associated with edibles. [Simply Pure](http://www.newhope.com/legislation-amp-regulation/medical-marijuana-meets-gourmet-healthy-food), a Colorado based company, has become a pioneer in the health food cannabis industry. All of their products are vegan, sugar free, and gluten free. The company desires to be the “Whole Foods” of the medical marijuana edible industry. Simply Pure, however, is not alone in providing medical marijuana users with healthier options in the world of edibles. \r\n\r\n[Auntie Dolores](http://auntiedolores.com) is a California company that focuses on the use of whole foods, coconut sugar instead of white sugar, and includes many gluten free and vegan product options. Auntie Dolores believes that food is medicine and that their small batch, gourmet treats are a healthy way to get a daily dose of cannabis medication. Auntie Dolores even creates CBD pet treats that are infused with superfoods to reduce anxiety and pain in pets with added nutritional benefits. The company also promotes the use of coconut oil in most of their products, which has become a one of the most quintessential health foods. Coconut oil is praised for its healthy fats, moisturizing abilities, and antibacterial properties. The cannabis industry has found that the abundance of healthy saturated fats in coconut oil are extremely effective at extracting THC from marijuana. \r\n\r\nCannabis infused coconut [oil](http://www.healthnutnews.com/cannabis-coconut-oil-powerful-effective/) is a very effective delivery method for cannabis and is easy for patients to make on their own. Marijuana infused coconut oil can be taken on its own or be cooked or baked into a cannabis infused treat. Combining cannabis with health foods can benefit a patient exponentially because how a patient ingests marijuana can add to or take away from the health benefits they may be receiving. Nutrition is a critical aspect of improving the overall health of people and their rate of healing, so consuming cannabis in a nutritionally beneficial way is important. \r\n\r\nThe cannabis industry is also currently embracing one of the most prevalent health trends, [juicing](http://www.latimes.com/health/la-he-juice-20150131-story.html). The juice craze first appeared several years ago and has seemingly only gotten larger. Juicing advocates claim that drinking daily juices, usually made with a mix of fruit and vegetables, leads to clearer thinking, glowing skin, and a detoxed body. \r\n\r\nThough the benefits have yet to be scientifically proven, juicing cannabis has been found to be extremely beneficial. Juicing raw, fresh [cannabis](https://www.medicaljane.com/category/cannabis-classroom/consuming-cannabis/juicing/# introduction-to-juicing-cannabis) creates a nutritionally dense and potent beverage without any psychoactive effects. Cannabis juice also provides a healthy kick of fatty acids that hemp products have become known for.\r\n\r\nIt is no surprise that cannabis is gaining traction in the health food world. Its counterpart, hemp, has been officially given the title of a super food. Cannabis and hemp are the same plant, the only difference being the level of THC found in the plant. Hemp, because of its extremely low or non-existent level of THC, is available across the world in various forms. Hemp seeds have become the most popular in recent years. Hemp [seeds](http://time.com/2946028/seeds-chia-hemp-flax-sesame-pumpkin-nigella/) are the highest protein seed on the market with 10 g of protein per ounce. \r\n\r\nEach ounce of hemp seeds also contains 3/4 of a persons daily recommended vitamin E and 1/3 of a persons recommended zinc. Hemp seeds are also high in omega 3 and 6 fatty acids and antioxidants. Hemp seeds can also be pressed into an oil that can be used to food items like salad dressings. Hemp seeds and oil can easily be incorporated into a persons daily diet as a great nutritional boost. All of the benefits that are attributed to hemp are all present in cannabis, making marijuana a bonafide superfood.\r\n\r\nCannabis cookery is now moving beyond just hemp products and medical edibles. The Cannabis Kitchen Cookbook, [written](http://www.foodrepublic.com/2016/04/20/is-marijuana-the-next-big-superfood/) by Robyn Griggs Lawrence, shows how cannabis can be used to make healthy, nutritious food with all parts of the cannabis plant. Lawerence, the book’s author, describes cannabis as, “one of the most nutritious vegetables that we have around,” and said that, “the whole idea is how to take advantage of this amazing superfood, not how do you cook to get high.” \r\n\r\nThe recipes in the book range from curries to smoothies, all that can be modified based on the desired psychoactive effects. Some recipes, such as a pesto, use underutilized parts of the plant, such as the fan leaves. Lawrence desired for her cookbook to be a “foodie” approach to cannabis by respecting both its medicinal and culinary potential as an amazing ingredient. \r\n\r\nAs the opinion tide changes in favor of medical and recreational cannabis legalization, we are able to see more of the benefits that the plant can provide. The benefits of marijuana, outside of its medical potential and its ability to create a psychoactive reaction, are often glossed over. These unique health aspects, such as vitamins and fatty acids, are what makes cannabis even more unique as a product. Consuming cannabis can benefit your body by adding support to your immune system and providing it with nutrition to function properly, both which can help heal your body faster from various medical conditions. \r\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3333333333333333,"src":"/static/f3643f9aa56f3e51770d12f9fff35f60/14b42/d26295533a6f1ee84ab0a38dab19f655.jpg","srcSet":"/static/f3643f9aa56f3e51770d12f9fff35f60/f836f/d26295533a6f1ee84ab0a38dab19f655.jpg 200w,\n/static/f3643f9aa56f3e51770d12f9fff35f60/2244e/d26295533a6f1ee84ab0a38dab19f655.jpg 400w,\n/static/f3643f9aa56f3e51770d12f9fff35f60/14b42/d26295533a6f1ee84ab0a38dab19f655.jpg 800w,\n/static/f3643f9aa56f3e51770d12f9fff35f60/47498/d26295533a6f1ee84ab0a38dab19f655.jpg 1200w,\n/static/f3643f9aa56f3e51770d12f9fff35f60/54ac5/d26295533a6f1ee84ab0a38dab19f655.jpg 1365w","srcWebp":"/static/f3643f9aa56f3e51770d12f9fff35f60/58556/d26295533a6f1ee84ab0a38dab19f655.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/f3643f9aa56f3e51770d12f9fff35f60/61e93/d26295533a6f1ee84ab0a38dab19f655.webp 200w,\n/static/f3643f9aa56f3e51770d12f9fff35f60/1f5c5/d26295533a6f1ee84ab0a38dab19f655.webp 400w,\n/static/f3643f9aa56f3e51770d12f9fff35f60/58556/d26295533a6f1ee84ab0a38dab19f655.webp 800w,\n/static/f3643f9aa56f3e51770d12f9fff35f60/99238/d26295533a6f1ee84ab0a38dab19f655.webp 1200w,\n/static/f3643f9aa56f3e51770d12f9fff35f60/5e0b8/d26295533a6f1ee84ab0a38dab19f655.webp 1365w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2124-markdown","title":"New York Plants First Industrial Hemp Crop","slug":"new-york-plants-first-industrial-hemp-crop","content":"New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill into law last month that [allows for the production of industrial hemp in the state of New York](http://www.lohud.com/story/news/politics/politics-on-the-hudson/2016/08/22/ny-just-grew-its-first-legal-hemp/89106520/). The new law allows hemp to be sold and transported in the state as part of a new pilot program. This has come on the heels of a 2014 law that allows farmers and universities to be involved in the research of industrial hemp in the state.\n\nJD Farms, which is working in association with Morrisville State College, has planted the first hemp crop in the state of New York in 80 years. The crop was planted on 30 acres, and it’s being grown for industrial purposes ranging from paper to clothing to food products such as hemp oil and hemp seeds. The popularity of hemp-based food products has grown in the past few years as people have recognized the nutritional value of hemp.\n\n### Hemp’s Rise in the United States\n\n[Hemp has a storied past](http://www.hemphasis.net/History/harriedhemp.htm) in the United States. The plant was originally the material of choice for maritime uses like sails and cord, because of its natural resistance to decay. Due to its utility, hemp was one crop that always traveled with pilgrims to the Americas, and it became a critical part of the new colonial economy.\n\nHemp was used to create products such as fabric, yarn and rope, most of which were sent back to Britain. After the revolutionary war, all citizens of the new republic were encouraged to grow hemp. It was such an important commodity that people were even allowed to pay taxes with it. \n\n### The Demise of Hemp in the 1930s\n\nDespite the fact that hemp farming and production are highly efficient, and the plant created a superior product, cotton began to take over when it came to cloth and sail-making. Meanwhile, wood pulp began to dominate the paper industry. Though its popularity declined, reliance on hemp was still encouraged during World War I to aid in the war effort.\n\nHowever, it was the 1930s that marked the demise of hemp. With the introduction of reefer madness, the cannabis stigma became associated with hemp as well—since cannabis and hemp both come from the cannabis sativa plant, albeit from different varieties. This decreased hemp’s popularity as a crop.\n\nThe final blow to hemp came with the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937. This tax act applied to marijuana and hemp; it regulated the hemp industry so much so that it no longer became a profitable crop choice for farmers. Hemp cultivation was then banned completely under the Controlled Substances Act of 1970. \n\nRELATED: [WHAT IS HEMP & WHAT IS IT USED FOR?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56dfbf5fab06d8000c000076/what-is-hemp-and-what-is-it-used-for)\n\n### The Difference Between Hemp & Marijuana\n\nBoth [marijuana and hemp are members of the same genus and species](https://www.medicaljane.com/2015/01/14/the-differences-between-hemp-and-cannabis/), but hemp only contains trace amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound found in marijuana. Hemp also typically grows much higher than marijuana plants. Though it has been concluded that there’s no exact difference between hemp and marijuana, the level of THC is used to draw a line between the two products.\n\nAccording to a Canadian study in 1971, for a plant to be considered hemp, it may contain no more than 0.3% of THC. According to United States law, however, hemp should contain no traceable amounts of THC. Due to the fact that all but the levels of THC are consistent between the two plants, it’s understandably hard to differentiate between hemp and cannabis.\n\nUltimately, hemp has multiple uses that range from industrial products and textiles to, more recently, nutrient-rich lotions and creams. Marijuana, which has higher levels of active cannabinoids like THC and CBD, make it an effective medication for various health conditions and symptoms, ranging from epilepsy to migraines and Parkinson’s disease. \n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56201c206430320006bb0000/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Hemp seed oil, unlike cannabis oil, is legal across the United States. Though hemp is a variety of the cannabis sativa plant, it doesn't contain high levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). In fact, hemp contains less than 0.3% THC, so it doesn't have the same psychoactive qualities as the variety of marijuana that you typically think of.\n\nHemp does, however, still contain high levels of other cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol (CBD), and it’s rich in a number of vitamins and minerals. Hemp is often used for more industrial purposes, such as making fabrics. And its oil, which also contains an optimal balance of omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids, has become a hot commodity in beauty products.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### What the Studies Show About Cannabis & Skin Care\n\nA Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology study showed that cannabinoids are responsible for lipid production: “Our preclinical data encourage one to explore whether endocannabinoid system-acting agents can be exploited in the management of common skin disorders,” said Tamás Biró, a scientist who worked on the study. “It is also suggested that these agents can be efficiently applied locally to the skin in the form of a cream.”\n\nThis study gives a nod to the idea that hemp seed or cannabis oil could be especially beneficial in regulating dry skin and other conditions such as acne. Hemp seed oil is also full of alpha-linolenic acid, which has anti-inflammatory properties. These anti-inflammatory properties make hemp seed oil helpful for easing everything from rashes to sunburns. \n\n### Hemp Seed Oil for Sunburn, Anti-Aging & Skin Repair\n\nPamela Hadfield, the co-founder of HelloMD, has found that applying hemp seed oil to a sunburn can make it almost disappear by the next day. And it makes for a great moisturizer as well. Hemp seed oil’s healing properties help rebuild and refresh damaged skin. The oil is said to resemble the protein found in human blood, making it very compatible with the body’s natural process of reparation. Hemp seed oil has a smooth application and absorbs quickly, making it ideal for daily cleansing and moisturizing. \n\nHemp seed oil is also rich in vitamins A and E; it’s also filled with minerals such as potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc, calcium and phosphorous. All of these nutrients, along with its high levels of antioxidants help slow and prevent cell damage, giving hemp seed oil its powerful anti-aging properties.\n\nThese findings have led to a new boom in the world of hemp seed oil cosmetics. One particular brand, Carun, focuses on various hemp items from food to skin care products. According to Dr. Alexis Granite, Carun’s dermatologist consultant, to the _Daily Mail_, “Active cannabinoids, such as those found in the Carun product range, have shown promise in improving a variety of skin conditions, including acne and eczema. Cannabinoids are powerful antioxidants that may work by reducing inflammation and especially when combined with hydrating oils may help in maintaining the skin's natural barrier function.”\n\n### Cannabis & Beauty: A Growing Trend\n\nRecently, beauty destinations such as _Elle_ and _The Coveteur_ have published articles about cannabis beauty products listing myriad hemp products ranging from pure hemp seed oil to lipstick and perfume. All of the buzz around hemp seed oil products is just another step towards gaining a wider understanding of the positive uses of cannabis sativa, including its THC-forward cousin. \n\nPhoto credit: [The Amazings](https://www.flickr.com/photos/theamazingsuk/)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56201c206430320006bb0000/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Few people, however,\r\nknow about hemp's long and controversial history. Despite being one of\r\nthe oldest domestic crops in the world (according to the North American\r\nIndustrial Hemp Council, hemp has been cultivated for at least 12,000\r\nyears), hemp is illegal in many places. Here's what consumers need to\r\nknow about this ancient plant.\r\n\r\n### What Is Hemp?\r\n\r\nContrary to what many people think, hemp isn't simply the cast-off\r\nportion of psychoactive cannabis plants. There are many types of\r\ncannabis plants, and hemp is simply a variety of non-psychoactive\r\ncannabis. While hemp and psychoactive marijuana are technically born\r\nfrom the same species, they're differentiated by their chemical makeup\r\n(hemp contains less than 1% THC), uses and growing methods.\r\n\r\n### What Is Hemp Used for?\r\n\r\nFor thousands of years, hemp has been used to produce textiles, paper,\r\nclothing and household products. The plant offers a source of renewable\r\nmaterials for use in thousands of industries. The [seeds of\r\nhemp](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56b51b3c00e901000c00005b/are-hemp-seeds-a-superfood),\r\nfor example, are often used in high-end organic foods, while the extract\r\nfrom the seeds and flowers is commonly used in organic skin lotions. The fibers\r\nand stalks of the hemp plant are used in plastics and as construction\r\nmaterial. Meanwhile, the stalk of the hemp plant is used to make a variety of\r\nthings, including mulch, insulation and cardboard.\r\n\r\nHemp can also be used to develop a wide selection of [hemp CBD\r\nproducts](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55f6ea9c65393944020d0000/what-is-hemp-cbd), which offer all of the [medical\r\nbenefits of cannabis](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55f4509e64633100064f0000/hemp-and-cannabis-for-medicinal-purposes-is-there-a-difference) without any of the potentially troublesome psychoactive effects. These\r\nproducts are used to treat nausea, seizures, anxiety disorders,\r\npsychotic disorders and depression. While the [positive medical\r\neffects of CBD](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55e12afb6539390006040000/cbd-oil-breaking-the-stereotypes-of-cannabis) are widely known, it's important to note that marijuana-derived CBD may be difficult to access in many areas, while hemp-derived CBD\r\nproducts may be easier to come by.\r\n\r\nUnfortunately, there’s much debate\r\nabout whether the effects of hemp- and cannabis-derived CBD products are\r\nthe same. While hemp-derived CBD products may be easier to get a hold of,\r\nthe unfortunate fact is that they're likely not as effective as\r\ncannabis-derived CBD products, which are generally more potent.\r\n\r\n### Hemp Is an Eco-Friendly Crop\r\n\r\nIn addition to being valuable for many industries, hemp is also an\r\nincredibly eco-friendly crop that benefits the land and soil of the\r\nfarmers who grow it. As hemp matures, it consumes large amounts of CO2,\r\ncleanses the soil of toxins, and puts down roots that help prevent soil\r\nerosion and loss of topsoil.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, hemp needs less water than more traditional crops, such as\r\nsoybeans and corn, and requires no pesticides to flourish. Because of\r\nthese traits, hemp is even being investigated as a crop that could\r\npotentially be used to help restore the shrinking Everglades by leaching\r\nagricultural runoff from the ground and stabilizing soil.\r\n\r\n### How Hemp Differs From Marijuana\r\n\r\nAny consumer who pulls a chunk of hemp out of the ground and attempts to\r\nsmoke it will be vastly disappointed. While hemp has many uses,\r\nintoxication simply isn't one of them. Hemp differs from marijuana in\r\nthat it contains an incredibly small amount of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).\r\n\r\nWhile marijuana generally possesses a THC content of anywhere between\r\n3% and 30%, industrial hemp's levels are generally lower than\r\n1%. With that in mind, a person would have to smoke somewhere\r\nbetween 10–12 industrial hemp cigarettes in a matter of minutes to\r\neven begin to feel the mildest of psychoactive effects.\r\n\r\n### Why Hemp Is Illegal\r\n\r\nGiven its many uses, agricultural benefits and incredibly low potential\r\nfor psychoactivity, many consumers wonder why hemp is illegal. The\r\nanswer is complex. In 1937, the [Marijuana Tax\r\nAct](http://www.druglibrary.org/schaffer/hemp/taxact/mjtaxact.htm) set\r\nout to regulate the use of cannabis. In doing so, it put strict\r\nregulations and guidelines on the sale and development of _all_ cannabis\r\nvarieties, of which there are hundreds—including hemp.\r\n\r\nIn 1970, the [Controlled Substances\r\nAct](https://www.dea.gov/druginfo/csa.shtml)\r\nwas introduced, classifying all variations of cannabis as a\r\nSchedule I drug. This classification makes hemp illegal for cultivation\r\nin the U.S. Though hemp is grown widely in other countries such as Canada, the U.S. is forced to import all hemp due to the 1970 act.\r\n\r\n### The Future of Hemp\r\n\r\nAs of 2014, states that have developed their own set of industrial hemp\r\nrules and regulations have been allowed to grow hemp for research\r\npurposes. This amendment to the U.S. Farm Bill resulted in states like\r\nOregon and Colorado pioneering hemp agriculture efforts.\r\n\r\nIn early 2015,\r\na bill called the [Industrial Hemp Farming\r\nAct](https://www.congress.gov/bill/114th-congress/senate-bill/134/cosponsors)\r\nwas introduced to the Senate and the House. If the bill passes, it would seek to remove the long-standing restrictions on the production and sale of industrial hemp by removing\r\nthe crop from the list of Schedule I controlled substances.\r\n\r\nAccording to Rep. Jared Polis, a Colorado-based democratic sponsor of the bill, \"The\r\nfederal ban on hemp has been a waste of taxpayer dollars that ignores\r\nscience, suppresses innovation and subverts the will of states.\"\r\n\r\nAs it stands now, the U.S. is the world's single largest consumer of\r\nhemp products—and the only major developed country that outlaws production of hemp. Fortunately, many experts in the cannabis industry believe that the legalization of industrial hemp isn't far off.\r\n\r\nIn addition to providing a considerable economic boost for the cities\r\nand states involved in cultivating industrial hemp, removing hemp from\r\nthe list of Schedule I controlled substances would also present a\r\ncleaner, more eco-friendly and more sustainable crop option for farmers\r\neverywhere.\r\n\r\nWhile the legalization of hemp is not yet a sure thing, many industry\r\nexperts feel optimistic about the future of this versatile plant.\r\n\r\nPhoto credit: [Tara Jones](https://www.flickr.com/photos/64630070@N07/5910200203/in/photolist-a1gjBv-cmeHfm-2Rngc5-6g2Hhq-GihwJ-5iv1aB-6VwZmJ-9w9UrP-2CJYsS-6VsWq2-9744JD-2CJYNL-6VsJsT-6fXrRP-7HYYuj-6VwN57-3K1SnT-6dZiwt-cfCWW-6bEbG8-6VwQku-8dLCpy-gfpCMR-6Vt7xa-aJkLtt-9dwQBS-5WoKsz-8mr8h7-aD8aEU-7Q8cD-59rKme-axtmr5-GvbNB-26cjT-Jtn4-4v9b6-5j2Qxc-4kCXBy-3TxWfm-4kCY5Q-7sF39i-BW9z-49mqmp-8TRF6F-6g2CW1-a1jbMJ-xgra1b-6mjYq-gfpCGa-7hNyyW)\r\n\r\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56201c206430320006bb0000/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post.
