Everyone from [Forbes](https://www.forbes.com/sites/ajherrington/2022/01/11/study-finds-cannabis-compounds-prevent-infection-by-covid-19-virus/?sh=703c90be1753) to [Jimmy Kimmel](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/13/arts/television/jimmy-kimmel-covid-cannabis.html) are weighing in on the study that's gone viral. \n\n![Can cannabis prevent infection from COVID-19?](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_20_at_9_08_08_AM_7c90885251.png)\n\nBut is this news really true? Let’s break down the study and find out.\n\n### The Cannabinoid Study: CBGA & CBDA\n\nThe study, published in the [Journal of Natural Products](https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.jnatprod.1c00946), sparked a discussion on whether or not cannabis can prevent infection from COVID-19. The study was conducted by the [Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University](https://today.oregonstate.edu/news/oregon-state-research-shows-hemp-compounds-prevent-coronavirus-entering-human-cells) (OSU) and [the department of molecular microbiology and immunology at Oregon Health & Science University](https://www.ohsu.edu/school-of-medicine/molecular-microbiology-and-immunology).\n\n![The COVID-19 virus](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_20_at_9_02_49_AM_2e3b2d6b2f.png)\n\nThe study was conducted with hemp, the non-psychoactive cannabis plant. The researchers looked for molecules in hemp that could bind to the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2. Once the cannabinoid acids bind to the spike proteins, it creates the inability of the virus to penetrate human cells. \n\n### Cannabinoids Bind to Spike Proteins Inhibiting Infection\n\nResearchers found that three cannabinoid acids had an affinity for binding to the spike proteins associated with COVID-19 — cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), and tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THC-A). Other cannabinoids were found to be ineffective. \n\n![Can cannabinoids stop the COVID-19 virus?](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_20_at_9_03_50_AM_452f0908e3.png)\n\nNext, researchers tested whether these acids that bind to spike proteins would stop the virus from penetrating the surface of human cells — effectively inhibiting the virus. Research carried forward with two of the three previously tested compounds — CBGA and CBDA — because researchers could not obtain enough THC-A due to its Schedule I substance designation. \n\nThey incubated the SARS-CoV-2 virus with hemp compounds and then exposed them to epithelial cells — the cells that line body tissues. After 24 hours of exposure, researchers then looked for the COVID-19 virus in the cells, but found none, noting that the hemp compounds “could be used to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection and also to shorten infections by preventing virus particles from infecting human cells.”\n\n### Does This Mean Cannabis Cures COVID?\n\nNote that laboratory results do not always translate to real life. While these findings show promise, there is still much more research to be done before anything conclusive can be said about the ties between cannabis and COVID. \n\n![Lab researchers try to uncover if CBGA and CBDA prevent infection from the COVID-19 virus](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_20_at_9_04_47_AM_70cb15d555.png)\n\nNo marijuana was used in the study; the only compounds that were tested came from hemp. THC-A showed promise but was not studied as conclusively as CBGA and CBDA. So at the moment, consuming cannabis in any form has not been proven to cure or prevent infection from COVID-19. \n\nPeter Grinspoon, M.D., a physician at Massachusetts General Hospital [told Forbes](https://www.forbes.com/sites/chrisroberts/2022/01/13/no-sorry-smoking-marijuana-does-not-protect-you-from-covid-19/?sh=19deae414eee) “This is a long way off, assuming they work, which is by no means guaranteed,” he added. “I don't think many molecules at that level actually pan out into functional medicines.” \n\n### Vaccinations are Still the Best Way to Combat COVID-19\n\n![COVID-19 vaccination is the best way to prevent infection](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_20_at_9_05_58_AM_3ebe94b3b5.png)\n\nThe most concerning aspect of the virality of this news story is that it may deter people from getting vaccinated and simply choosing to ingest cannabis instead. This is not recommended. \n\n Vaccination is still your best course of action against the virus. While you may choose to experiment with cannabis additionally, there is no evidence to suggest that marijuana is the COVID-19 cure we’ve been waiting for. \n\nBut that doesn’t mean this isn’t an important step for weed, especially in the public eye. As we progress with federal legality in the U.S., we can cite the potential value in marijuana from studies such as this. \n\n![In New York you will be allowed to grow marijuana at home](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_19_at_4_04_20_PM_71a1e7e98d.png)\n\nWe hope to see more studies related to cannabis and COVID-19 to follow — hopefully uncovering more potential health benefits, especially in relation to the ongoing pandemic.\n\n### Get Your Medical Document & Purchase Medical Cannabis\n\nIt's easy to get your medical document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://hellomd.com/get-started). Although cannabis tinctures may seem new to the scene, in actuality, they're making a comeback. \n\n### History of the Cannabis Tincture\n\nThe first known use of a [cannabis tincture](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tincture_of_cannabis) dates back thousands of years to the ancient Egyptians. During the 19th century in the US, cannabis tinctures became a common household medicine, and cannabis indica was a mainstay on apothecary shelves. \n\n![Screen Shot 2021-10-11 at 1.51.15 PM.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_10_11_at_1_51_15_PM_b4ee19d101.png)\nThe apothecary was the neighborhood pharmacy of the late 19th century, with cannabis on the shelves.\n\nDuring this time, [doctors often prescribed](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5312634/) cannabis to treat headaches, chronic pain, sleep disorders, and to increase appetite. By the late 1800s, cannabis indica tinctures were as widely accepted as ibuprofen is today. Apothecaries continued to create proprietary mixtures until the turn of the century when the pharmaceutical industry emerged, at which time cannabis tinctures became branded.\n\nIn 1851 the [U.S. Pharmacopoeia](https://www.rxlist.com/united_states_pharmacopeia/definition.htm) added cannabis to its listings of drugs and by 1916 it was instructing readers on the administration of cannabis to humans as well as dogs.\n\n### How to Consume Marijuana Tinctures\n\nIn traditional herbalism, tinctures are made of plant matter soaked in alcohol, then strained and put in a glass dropper bottle for consumption. In the cannabis world, [tinctures can encompass this method](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-tinctures-from-glycerin-to-mct-oil-which-is-best), as well as cannabis concentrates dissolved in a carrier liquid—be it alcohol, vegetable glycerin or oil.\n\nA tincture can be administered sublingually, under the tongue, or mixed into food or beverages. If taken sublingually, you'll experience a [faster onset](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-tinctures-what-they-are-and-why-you-want-them) and feel the effects within 15 to 30 minutes. If mixed into a food or beverage, the onset may take upwards of 30 minutes. The duration of effects can range from four to eight hours.\n\nNelson Cuevas, a pharmacist at PharmaCannis in New York says, \"Tinctures are very appealing for novice users of cannabis. One of the main reasons is because we can really find out the exact dosing for the patient. We can tweak it—give a little more, a little less—to get the maximum amount of relief for the patient.\"\n\nFor newer patients, tinctures are a great place to start as dosage may be titrated up or down very easily. As no two patients are alike, consumers are advised to start out low and slow, working upwards to the correct dosage. Method of consumption, a patient's biochemistry, and overall mindset can affect the outcome and impact of the medicine. As Nelson explains, \"It's a little easier to titrate to the exact dose when you're using a liquid over a pill.\"\n\n### Benefits of Cannabis Tinctures\n\nTinctures will typically contain cannabidiol (CBD), tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), or a combination of both. You will also find cannabis tinctures that are CBD from hemp, a marijuana plant containing 0.03% THC or less, allowing it to be sold at the local drugstore. \n\nTerpenes, the essential oils from the cannabis plants, are often mixed into tinctures to emphasize a certain effect. For example, the terpene [limonene](https://hellomd.com/articles/know-your-cannabis-terpenes-limonene) is often used to create an uplifting or energizing affect. [New studies indicate](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/best-cbd-tincture#benefits) combining CBD and THC, with terpenes is more effective than using CBD or THC alone.\n[Some studies indicate](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/best-cbd-tincture#benefits) that combining CBD, THC, and terpenes is more effective than using CBD or THC alone.\n\n### Top 5 Cannabis Tinctures in the United States\n\nIf you're interested in adding tinctures to your wellness routine, here's our list of the top 5 cannabis tinctures across the United States.\n\n### 1. New weed-infused drinks provide a healthy alternative to alcohol, and they can stimulate different effects, whether that be to energize, calm, or act as a social lubricant. And, let's face it, drinking a cannabis beverage is more socially acceptable than lighting up a pipe, or even drawing from a vape.\n\n### The Cannabis Drinks Market is Exploding\n\nThe market for weed-infused beers, tonics, teas, aperitifs, sparkling waters, and other beverages is growing. New startups are sprouting like weeds (pun intended) and major investments from beverage makers in California, Colorado, Canada, and other markets where cannabis is legal. \n\nWhile sales of weed beverages are still small compared to the edibles market, some experts expect them to spike dramatically, perhaps even rising [higher than $1 billion by 2025](https://lbbusinessjournal.com/drinkable-high-are-thc-infused-beverages-the-next-trend-in-legal-cannabis). \n\n![shutterstock_1868806051-min (1).jpg](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/shutterstock_1868806051_min_1_3ad7a57a8d.jpg)\n\nWeed drinks are a good substitute for alcohol, and better for you than smoking cannabis. Drinking an infused beverage may also appeal to consumers of other cannabis products. Drinking your marijuana allows it to enter the system and provide effects faster than most edibles. \n\nMarijuana drinks seem to appeal to both the \n“There’s something about unwinding and relaxing with tea at the end of the night, and now my tea can be more functional because it does have CBD and THC in it as well,” says Jessica Lukas, senior vice president of commercial development at BDS Analytics, a cannabis-market insights firm, in a [Rolling Stone interview](https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/cannabis-marijuana-weed-drinks-beverages-420-986786/). \n\n### The Challenges in Creating Tasty Weed Drinks\n\nIn catering to the growing cannabis-infused drink market, manufacturers face a double challenge. Some people don’t like the taste of weed in what they drink. But the greater obstacle to overcome is the fact that cannabis and alcohol can’t be mixed. [There are some studies](https://hellomd.com/articles/are-marijuana-infused-alcoholic-drinks-a-good-idea) suggesting that alcohol combined with weed could increase the levels of THC levels in the blood.\n\nThat means that cannabis needs to be mixed with water, and typical compounds such as THC and CBD are not easily water-soluble. Without proper treatment, drinks can have unappealing chunky bits of weed floating around.\n\nHowever, technology has come to the rescue. Many cannabis beverage makers use a process called “nano-emulsification,” which breaks down cannabis oil into microscopic particles and then mixes them with an emulsifier, a substance that enables oil to dissolve in water. \n\nSo in making a beer-type product, a brewer would first have to remove the alcohol, introduce cannabis compounds in a nano-emulsion, and then perhaps add terpenes for flavor (and also compensate for the body lost when the beer was made non-alcoholic). \n\n### Our Picks for the Top 5 Weed Drinks\n\n![Screen Shot 2021-10-07 at 8.28.18 PM.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_10_07_at_8_28_18_PM_0d64f22957.png)\n\n### 1. After years of being a dirty secret, cannabis was deemed \"essential\" during the global pandemic. Long socially distanced lines into dispensaries and a rise in online pickup orders confirmed the popularity of medical and recreational marijuana. Not surprisingly, 2020 brought an increase of 67% in U.S. cannabis sales.\n\nWhile THC helped people deal with the social isolation of COVID-19, the anxiety-relieving cannabinoid CBD also saw an increase in consumption. Across the board, [New Frontier Data](https://newfrontierdata.com/cannabis-insights/cannabis-consumption-reflects-dramatic-changes-amid-covid-19-pandemic) reported on the overall increase in cannabis consumption. In a recent survey, 42% of current marijuana consumers reporting increased usage, while 18% of study participants indicated a large increase in consumption.\n\nBelow are some cannabis trends we've seen over the past year during the global shut down.\n\n### Cannabis-Infused Beverages\n\n![Screen Shot 2021-06-07 at 9.44.11 PM.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_06_07_at_9_44_11_PM_b3cef8b763.png)\n\nThough classified as edibles, cannabis consumers are giving infused beverages more attention than ever. While cannabis drinks hit the market with a bang a few years ago, they are becoming an increasingly popular choice. There's [Recess](https://takearecess.com/shop/sparkling-water/peach-ginger?gclid=Cj0KCQjwh_eFBhDZARIsALHjIKehuJ5uWQB_1zZVGdBItoZ6A9C7oD8QdTxfdqW8gWs4a6qNGAge0ygaAoo9EALw_wcB) a sparkling hemp CBD infused water with adaptogens , and [Gem + Jane](https://www.cannacraft.com/brand/gemjane) a \"THC botanical beverage infused with rare cannabinoids.\" We see growth across the CBD and THC sectors, and if it's a liquid, it may be infused with cannabis oil\n\n### Hemp/CBD Cigarettes\n\n![Screen Shot 2021-06-07 at 9.53.55 PM.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_06_07_at_9_53_55_PM_d5a6e261fb.png)\n\n\nThe Marlboro cigarettes of yesteryear have been replaced by vaping nicotine with devices such as the Juul. Still, for those who want to break the habit or relax a little, hemp cigarettes made a grand entrance in 2021. Walk into your local headshop or dispensary, depending on where you live, and you may see hemp or CBD marijuana cigarettes. \n\nThey are a similar form factor as cigarettes, they often look the same and have a similar filtration device. However, hemp or CBD-marijuana cigarettes don't have nicotine, and THC amounts are below 0.3%—a level too low for intoxication. It's essential to find a reputable brand like [Shaman Smokes](https://cbdamericanshaman.com/cbd-cigarettes), a CBD cigarette blended from USA-grown hemp from hemp strains chosen for relaxation and focus.\n\n### Delta-8\n\n![Screen Shot 2021-06-07 at 10.34.51 PM.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_06_07_at_10_34_51_PM_d0b0b1a31c.png)\n\nWhat's Delta-8, and why do you hear so much about it? Delta-8-Tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta-8-THC, Δ8-THC) is a psychoactive cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant, and in most places, it is gray-territory legal. Delta 8 can be extracted from either cannabis marijuana or hemp. \n\nDelta-8 is a form of THC, although with milder psychoactive effects. For some people who are overwhelmed by the effects of THC, Delta 8 may be a less intimidating high. You are likely to find Delta 8 in your local headshop as hemp can be legally grown and used for extractions all over the US. This makes delta-8 legal in states where delta-9 THC (regular marijuana) may be illegal.\n\n### Favorite Strains During Lockdown\n\n![Screen Shot 2021-06-07 at 10.35.56 PM.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_06_07_at_10_35_56_PM_a6d2e322c5.png)\n\n\nWho would have thought we would be locked in our house for over a year in virtual isolation minus the occasional, or persistent, zoom meeting? Noone. \n\nWorking remotely took on a whole new meaning for most of us during 2020 and 2021, and for many, it meant increased flower consumption. Some of the favorites for working from home include the creativity-inducing [Blue Dream](https://hellomd.com/strains/blue-dream), a sativa-dominant hybrid that provides a cerebral and euphoric high. \n\nAnother strain specifically designed for relaxation is CBD-heavy [Harle-Tsu](https://hellomd.com/strains/harle-tsu/). As daily life is disrupted, many kids are not attending school, and there is instability in our day-to-day routines. Millions of kids are at home attending school on zoom. Children lack necessary social interaction, and increasingly feelings of isolation are common. \n\nDuring COVID, antidepressants and anti-anxiety drug prescriptions have spiked more than 34%. Insomnia drugs have jumped more than 14%. A recent report by [Express Script](https://www.express-scripts.com/corporate/americas-state-of-mind-report) stated, \"This analysis, showing that many Americans are turning to medications for relief, demonstrates the serious impact COVID-19 may be having on our nation's mental health.\"\n\n### CBD for Kids?\nCannabidiol, or CBD, is one of the hottest trends in today's health and wellness market, and it has a long list of documented benefits for both body and mind. Research has shown that this abundant cannabis compound can boost the immune system, reduce anxiety, improve sleep and much more, but most of those studies have focused on CBD effects on adults. \n\nCan CBD support children's health in the same way? Maybe—but because there hasn't been a lot of research on the effects of CBD on kids and teens, [medical experts urge parents to be cautious](https://childmind.org/article/cbd-what-parents-need-to-know/#:~:text=CBD%20may%20be%20safe%20itself,worsening%20sleep%20problems%20if%20stopped.%E2%80%9D). \n\nHere's what science reveals about whether CBD is safe for children.\n\n### What is CBD?\n\nCBD is [one of more than a hundred compounds](https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/cannabidiol-cbd-what-we-know-and-what-we-dont-2018082414476) found in the cannabis sativa plant and its close cousin, hemp. \n\nUnlike another famous cannabis compound, THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) CBD won't cause anyone to feel high. But it can support the health of the body's many subsystems, including the endocannabinoid system, a network of natural cannabinoid receptors found in tissues and organs throughout the body.\n\nCBD can be extracted from the resin of both cannabis and hemp plants. But because the cannabis plant typically contains a considerable amount of THC, CBD extracts from cannabis may have some too – and that can lead to legal restrictions. But CBD from hemp typically has little or no THC, making it possible to produce and sell it freely almost everywhere in the world.\n\nCBD is available in a variety of forms, including oils, tinctures, and isolate powders. That makes it easy to add CBD to just about anything, from your favorite recipe to a wide range of products such as candies, drinks and personal care items. CBD tinctures can be placed under the tongue for fast action, and salves and creams can be used on the skin, which is rich in endocannabinoid receptors. \n\n### CBD: Mental and Physical Effects\n\nThere's been considerable research conducted on understanding [the many effects of CBD on mental and physical health](https://www.healtheuropa.eu/cbd-understanding-how-cbd-works-with-our-bodies/96718/). The endocannabinoid system is a relatively recent discovery, and scientists are still working to understand all its effects on human health and development, but CBD appears to support the activity of the two main cannabinoid receptors, imaginatively called CB1 and CB2. CBD may also boost the expression and uptake of neurotransmitters in the brain related to mood and concentration, helping to calm anxiety, promote concentration, and support better sleep.\n\nSome studies also indicate that CBD can affect pain signaling from the body to the brain to relieve the pain in many chronic conditions like arthritis and migraines. \n\nOther research reveals that it may support the immune system, reduce inflammation, and improve circulation. These benefits may be true for children and adults, but most significant studies on the benefits of CBD for children have so far been limited to just a few severe health conditions.\n\n### CBD for Children: What We Know\n\nThe most comprehensive studies on CBD for children have focused on [the use of this and other cannabis compounds](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6514832/) to relieve the symptoms of epilepsy – a family of seizure disorders that don't always respond to conventional anti-seizure medications. \n\nThat research has led to the development of the first cannabis-based epilepsy medication, a synthetic cannabinoid derivative called [Epidiolex](https://www.epidiolex.com/). This drug can relieve the symptoms of severe childhood seizure disorders such as Dravet Syndrome, which can cause multiple seizures every day.\n\nRecent research in Israel [has also investigated](https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT02956226) CBD's potential to relieve symptoms of autism spectrum disorder, a complex set of developmental disorders that interfere with communication and social skills. Autism affects about one in every 54 children in the US, and symptoms can include severe episodes of rage, restlessness, and repetitive motions such as rocking or spinning. \n\nAlthough study groups were relatively small, these studies revealed that CBD tinctures reduce restlessness, promote better focus, and calm outbursts of anger and fear in a majority of participants between the ages of 5 and 21.\n\nOther studies suggest that CBD might be helpful for children with severe anxiety or depression, but research in these areas is limited and not conclusive. What we do know, is that research indicates that CBD is incredibly effective in [reducing anxiety in adults](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/why-taking-cbd-daily-can-help-reduce-your-anxiety).\n\n### Natural Cannabinoids: From Mother to Child\n\nEndocannabinoids, the body's natural cannabinoid chemicals, can play an important part in a child's development, before and after birth. So far, research has identified two of these cannabis like substances – anandamide and 2-AG (2-arachidonoglycerol). These neurotransmitters bind to cannabinoid receptors throughout the body to support homeostasis, or balance, reduce inflammation, and boost immune functioning. \n\nCompounds in the cannabis plant are so similar to these natural cannabinoid chemicals that they can trigger responses in endocannabinoid receptors, too – and that's why cannabis and cannabis compounds can help to relieve the symptoms of a number of health conditions.\n \nNow, [research reveals](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2544377/) that the endocannabinoid anandamide acts as a \"messenger\" between the uterus and an embryo as it's being implanted in the uterine wall. This helps explain why using marijuana during pregnancy could be harmful. THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis, is very similar in structure to anandamide, so it could interfere with this very important early signaling and affect the embryo's survival. \n\nEndocannabinoids are [also found in human breast milk](https://healthfeedback.org/claimreview/endocannabinoids-in-human-breast-milk-are-important-for-human-development-but-not-present-in-cannabis/), which passes them on to a nursing infant. Researchers still aren't sure about the effect of these chemicals on infants, but they speculate that they could help boost a child's immune system.\n\nThe fact that natural cannabinoids are shared between mother and child might appear to support CBD's use for treating a variety of childhood health issues. But healthcare professionals caution that although CBD and other cannabis compounds can trigger responses in the endocannabinoid receptors like natural cannabinoids do, [these two types of chemicals aren't identical](https://www.blazetherapeutics.com/post/cannabisdebunkedcannabinoidsbreastmilk) – and it's still unclear what effect an external cannabinoid like CBD might have on a child's developing brain and body.\n\n### Should You Give CBD Products to Kids?\n\n[Healthcare experts stress ](https://www.healthline.com/health/childrens-health/cbd-for-children) because there's so little research on the effects of CBD products for children, it's better to choose caution and avoid them, unless your child's doctor approves. \n\nHowever, if parents choose to try CBD products to relieve conditions like insomnia or anxiety, it's important to keep some essentials in mind:\n- CBD might interact with other medications a child is taking.\n- Not all CBD products are the same. Full spectrum CBD contains all the compounds in cannabis – and that can include some THC. Look for hemp-derived CBD or CBD isolates instead as THC is harmful to the developing brain.\n- CBD products may not always be lab tested for purity and safety. Read labels to find out whether a product's CBD content has been lab-certified.\n- Various products deliver CBD in different ways. For example, edibles like gummies take longer to deliver CBD than quick-acting tinctures.\n- Most CBD products are designed for adults and may not offer child-size dosing options.\n- Although CBD is generally safe, it can cause side effects like sleepiness or an upset stomach.\n\nCBD has plenty of documented health benefits for adults, but far less is known about their use in children with a few exceptions. While scientists work to unravel the connections between CBD and kids' health, it may be wise to wait until they're older to give it a try.\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.492537313432836,"src":"/static/40d81d0abd872a92215dfa4921da5019/ee604/1134f39bb99ac99eda1e30c1b0d4832f.png","srcSet":"/static/40d81d0abd872a92215dfa4921da5019/69585/1134f39bb99ac99eda1e30c1b0d4832f.png 200w,\n/static/40d81d0abd872a92215dfa4921da5019/497c6/1134f39bb99ac99eda1e30c1b0d4832f.png 400w,\n/static/40d81d0abd872a92215dfa4921da5019/ee604/1134f39bb99ac99eda1e30c1b0d4832f.png 800w,\n/static/40d81d0abd872a92215dfa4921da5019/f3583/1134f39bb99ac99eda1e30c1b0d4832f.png 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/40d81d0abd872a92215dfa4921da5019/58556/1134f39bb99ac99eda1e30c1b0d4832f.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/40d81d0abd872a92215dfa4921da5019/61e93/1134f39bb99ac99eda1e30c1b0d4832f.webp 200w,\n/static/40d81d0abd872a92215dfa4921da5019/1f5c5/1134f39bb99ac99eda1e30c1b0d4832f.webp 400w,\n/static/40d81d0abd872a92215dfa4921da5019/58556/1134f39bb99ac99eda1e30c1b0d4832f.webp 800w,\n/static/40d81d0abd872a92215dfa4921da5019/99238/1134f39bb99ac99eda1e30c1b0d4832f.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3114-markdown","title":"DIY Recipe: Our Stress Busting CBD-Infused Green Smoothie","slug":"diy-recipe-our-stress-busting-cbd-infused-green-smoothie","content":"Everyone has stress, but during COVID-19 and other times of instability, stress, and anxiety may become chronic. Experiencing chronic stress puts your body under unnecessary pressure, like being continuously under attack. Red alert: that's not good news for your health and wellbeing. In this all-natural DIY smoothie we combine ingredients, such as CBD and blueberries, which will help combat stress and leave a sweet taste in your mouth!\n\n### Fight or Flight \n\nYour body is purpose-built to react to threatening situations. For instance, a fast Mac truck comes toward you while walking in a crosswalk; your body will activate your adrenal glands. In turn, the [adrenal gland releases a surge of hormones](https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/stress-management/in-depth/stress/art-20046037), including adrenaline and cortisol. Adrenaline will raise your heart rate and blood pressure while cortisol will lower nonessential thinking - so you're able to get out the situation fast. \n\nOur flight or flight is the ultimate stress-response system. But if we activate it too frequently, it stays in \"on\" mode more or less permanently. Chronic stress will overexpose your body to stress hormones and make you more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and decreased immunity.\n\n### Managing Your Stress\n\nEliminating stress is not always possible, but learning how to manage your stress may positively impact your life and overall health. Understanding what events stress you and how you react are the first steps to improvement. Taking care of yourself and [developing stress management strategies](https://www.webmd.com/balance/stress-management/stress-management) are also critical. Two well-known strategies for fighting stress are to exercise regularly and eating healthy, well-balanced meals.\n\nBelow is our recipe for a stress-busting hemp CBD-infused green smoothie. Not only is it delicious, but it's also a nutrient-dense and healthy meal replacement. Ingredients include antioxidant-rich superfoods chock full of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and the superhero of anxiety relief: CBD.\n\nHere are more details on each ingredient and why they are powerful stress reducers:\n\n### Hemp-Derived CBD\n\nHemp-derived CBD is the one-two stress management punch in our healthy smoothie. CBD is known to address a host of common conditions such as: \n\n- Anxiety\n- Stress\n- Depression\n- Insomnia\n- Pain\n- Inflammation\n- Excema & skin issues\n\n### Cashews\n\nCashews are delicious on their own, but in a smoothie, they add creamy goodness. Packed with iron, B6, and magnesium, a handful of cashews a day boost our mood and quell anxiety. Cashews are also a fantastic source of the amino acid tryptophan. This wonder amino helps with our serotonin's uptake, which helps us to feel our best selves. It also happens to be a precursor to the hormone itself. \n\n### Avocado\n\nB vitamins help our bodies beat back nervous energy and even promote healthier brain cells. B vitamins are known to relieve stress, and avocados are full of them. Avocado is also full of healthy monounsaturated fat and potassium, and in a smoothie, an avocado is an excellent replacement for animal-based milk. \n\n### Super Greens\n\nSpinach and kale are both rich in magnesium; which is vital for proper growth and maintenance of bones. But magnesium also allows our systems to function properly. [Psychology Today](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/evolutionary-psychiatry/201801/magnesium-depression) says that magnesium is one of the most essential minerals for the body to function properly.\n\n### Blueberries\n\nBerries, in general, are great stress-busters, but blueberries in particular, hold the most antioxidants. Antioxidants are known to memory, sharpen cognition as well as to lower blood pressure. High in vitamin C, blueberries combat stress and lower cortisol levels.\n\n### Pineapple\n\nWith higher levels of Vitamin C, pineapple is another good addition to your smoothie. Other fruits such as kiwi, cantaloupe, or papaya are suitable substitutes for pineapple. They are all packed with immune-boosting properties and will also help to lower cortisol levels. We love pineapple because of the taste, and when mixed with spinach, your smoothie will become a vibrant green hue!\n\n### Lion's Mane Powder\n\nLion's mane mushrooms have been linked to new [growth of brain cells: hericenones and erinacines.](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/lions-mane-mushroom#TOC_TITLE_HDR_2) Studies have found that lion's mane is also a potent anti-inflammatory. In addition, researchers believe it to reduce anxiety and depression by improved functioning of the hippocampus.\n\n### Maca Powder\n\n[A recent study](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18784609) indicated that maca root might reduce anxiety and stress while at the same time increasing libido. People claim that maca also decreases the instances of erectile dysfunction when taken regularly and flavonoids may be why. [A 2015 study](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24931003) also found that maca could reduce symptoms of depression in postmenopausal women.\n\n### Ingredients for Hemp CBD-Infused Green Smoothie\n\n- 1 full dropper of hemp-derived CBD\n\n- 1 handful of unsalted cashews\n\n- 1/2 an avocado\n\n- 1 handful of spinach or kale\n\n- 1 handful of blueberries\n\n- 2 large spears of pineapple\n\n- 1/2 tsp of Lion's Mane powder\n\n- 1/2 tsp Maca root powder\n\n- 1 small container of coconut vanilla yogurt\n\n- 1 handful of ice\n\n### How to Make It\n\nThis is pretty simple. Put all the ingredients in your blender or Nutri Bullet and mix it! If it is too thick, add a little water and mix again. Enjoy!\n\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.5037593984962405,"src":"/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/ee604/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.png","srcSet":"/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/69585/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.png 200w,\n/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/497c6/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.png 400w,\n/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/ee604/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.png 800w,\n/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/f3583/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.png 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/58556/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/61e93/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.webp 200w,\n/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/1f5c5/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.webp 400w,\n/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/58556/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.webp 800w,\n/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/99238/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3032-markdown","title":"4 Top CBD Topicals for Summer Skin Care","slug":"4-top-cbd-topicals-for-summer-skin-care","content":"With summertime in full swing, your skin is likely getting a lot more exposure to the elements—sun, wind, you name it. But don’t rejoice just yet—there are stipulations to this new rule.\n\nHere’s the official blurb from the TSA’s website:\n\n“Marijuana and certain cannabis infused products, including some cannabidiol (CBD) oil, remain illegal under federal law except for products that contain no more than 0.3 percent THC on a dry weight basis or that are approved by FDA. (See the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, Pub. L. 115-334.)”\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nThe announcement only covers hemp-derived CBD products that contain less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or [drugs approved by the FDA (read: Epidiolex)](https://www.hellolift.com/health-wellness/5b5b62b1a1805500087db9cd/how-hemp-cbd-oil-can-help-kids-with-seizures). So, if you’ve got a high-CBD tincture with an 8:1 CBD-to-THC ratio, you could still technically be busted for that.\n\nAnd of course, all marijuana products remain illegal at the federal level. So if you’re caught with them at a checkpoint, TSA is required to report it. \n\nBut the question remains: If you have a high-CBD product that contains more than 0.3% THC, other than looking at the label, how are TSA officers supposed to know? And what’s to stop a person from taking a product whose labeling states that it has less than 0.3% THC and replacing the contents with a product that’s high in THC?\n\nThe reality is that there isn’t a way to know without testing the actual product—and we all know that TSA doesn’t have time for that. On its website, TSA states that its main objective is security, not the enforcement of drug laws. But its agents are still required to alert authorities if they find federally prohibited materials in your luggage.\n\nIf you take CBD to manage a certain condition and don’t want to get held up at a security checkpoint because you have CBD products on you, the best course of action is to make sure that your products are compliant with TSA rules. In other words, you’re transporting items that are 0.3% THC or less—even if there’s technically no way to be sure that CBD products are what they say they are without testing. \n\nTo help you prep for your next trip, we’ve rounded up a few travel-friendly products that meet TSA’s new guidelines. And they can all be shipped directly to your door via [our shop](https://www.hellolift.com/products). \n\n### 1. There are simply too many variables—how you’re ingesting CBD and what your endocannabinoid system is like are just a couple of factors that impact the results of your personal experience with CBD. \n\nBut another factor that we don’t often think about is CBD’s bioavailability—or rather, how much CBD your body is able to access once you’ve consumed it. Every consumption method has a different bioavailability. \n\nFor example, vaping CBD tends to be the most efficient, because the vapor goes directly to your lungs and then into your bloodstream. It’s estimated that the bioavailability of inhaled CBD is somewhere around 56%. \n\nBut inhalation has its drawbacks—effects tend to come on more quickly, but they also fade more quickly as well. And for some folks, inhalation carries some health concerns.\n\nFor those concerned about lung health, orally ingesting CBD—whether via capsule or edible—is often a preferred method of consumption. But this method has the lowest bioavailability at about 4–12%. \n\nThis is because when you eat CBD, it has to make its way through your digestive system, and a lot of it gets broken down in the digestive process. So, even if you ingest CBD, only a small fraction of it will be used by your body. This means you’ll have to take much more CBD than you actually need to get the effects you want. \n\nOf course, with CBD’s ever-growing popularity, this may start to change. Companies are aware of the drawbacks of oral ingestion, and they’re working on ways to make oral CBD more bioavailable. And a lot of the methods being studied are ones that already exist in the pharmaceutical industry. \n\n### 1. Encasing CBD in Liposomes May Increase Its Bioavailability \n\nLiposomes are already used in medicine to protect drugs as they pass through your digestive system. These tiny, spherical bubbles are made from fats called phospholipids. \n\nPhospholipids are made up of two parts: a head that’s attracted to water and a tail that repels water. When many phospholipids come into contact with water, the heads and tails turn away from each other, forming what’s called a bilayer. This bilayer is what makes up the outside of a liposome bubble—and it’s what protects the precious medicine within. \n\nLiposomes have the ability to fully encapsulate and transport various medicines to specific tissues without being broken down by the digestive process. This quality allows substances transported by liposomes to have a higher bioavailability. \n\nAlthough there isn’t any research specifically on CBD and liposomes, there’s plenty that speaks to the efficiency of using liposomes to transport hydrophobic molecules—molecules, like CBD, that tend to repel water. \n\nBecause liposomes can enclose and protect medicines as they pass through your digestive system, if you were to take CBD that’s encapsulated by liposomes, you’d theoretically need less CBD per dose to get similar effects than if you were to take CBD on its own. \n\nIf you think liposomes would be a good addition to your CBD regimen, don’t get ahead of yourself. Encasing CBD in liposomes isn’t something you can do at home.\n\nLuckily, some CBD companies are now starting to use liposomes. Elixinol currently makes a [Hemp Oil Liposome spray](https://www.hellolift.com/products/5b57aaed02f1740001522fd3/hemp-oil-liposome) that you can purchase on HelloMD. \n\nRELATED: [LIPOSOMES: A WAY TO MAKE CBD MORE EFFECTIVE](https://hellomd.com/articles/liposomes-a-way-to-make-cbd-more-effective/)\n\n### 2. Nanoemulsion Technology Could Improve CBD Delivery \n\nNanoemulsion is similarly related but different from the use of liposomes. Both technologies involve methods that try to make hydrophobic medicines compatible with water at the nano level. \n\nNanoemulsion was developed from nanotechnology, a branch of technology that works with matter that’s the size of a nanometer. To give you an idea of the scale of this technology, one nanometer is one billionth of a meter. \n\nCompanies are already experimenting with nanoemulsion to reduce the time it takes for cannabis edibles to take effect. But this type of technology also has other benefits—like making cannabinoids such as CBD more bioavailable. \n\nTo create a nanoemulsion, you combine: \n\n* Water\n* Oil\n* The medicine in question \n* A compound to stabilize the mixture\n\nBecause nanoemulsions are so small, they can easily penetrate tissues in the body. What this means is that medication can be delivered quickly and at a full dose, because its bypassing the digestive system and other bodily processes. \n\nResearchers are taking nanoemulsions one step further with something called self-emulsifying drug delivery technology (SEDDS). Instead of specially mixing and handling a medicine to create an emulsion, this process happens inside the gastrointestinal tract. \n\nIn SEDDs technology, an oil and water emulsion is formed with the medicine at the center when all of the necessary ingredients enter a certain part of the gastrointestinal tract. \n\nResearchers recently tested this technology with a CBD and THC mixture in 14 healthy human volunteers and [found it to be more effective than that of a Sativex](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0022354917308900), a sublingual cannabis spray currently available in the U.K. \n\nSince this technology is so new, it’s still being tested—not only for cannabinoids, but for other medicines as well. Because it’s so promising, we’ll likely hear more about it in the future. \n\n### 3. Adding Fluoride to a CBD Molecule Can Increase Its Efficacy \n\nAnother method of upping CBD’s bioavailability is through a process called fluorination. Fluorine is the most reactive of all of the elements in the periodic table. It can form a bond with carbon that’s hard to break down—even for the enzymes in your gut. This property makes fluorine useful in the medical world.\n\nDuring fluorination, a fluoride ion is attached to a carbon atom in a drug’s molecular structure. Adding fluoride to pharmaceuticals is a common practice—about 20% of all commercialized drugs contain fluoride. \n\nThere are lots of reasons why pharmaceutical companies add fluoride to their products. This process can: \n\n* Slow the metabolism of a drug—meaning it takes more time for the drug to be broken down in the body, therefore giving it more time to work\n* Enhance a molecule’s ability to bind to certain receptors \n* Make the drug easier to dissolve in fats, thereby increasing its bioavailability\n\nOne company, Phytecs, is already working on fluorinating CBD and testing the resulting compounds for efficacy. So far, it’s made three different versions of fluorinated CBD (F-CBDs) and tested them in animal models. \n\nResearchers have found that the [F-CBDs were more effective in treating animal models of depression, anxiety, pain and skin diseases than CBD was alone](https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0158779). \n\nWhile F-CBDs are a long way from becoming available, they offer a lot of promise and are easily patentable. So, we’re sure to hear more about this research in the future. \n\nWhen we look at all that’s currently being done to improve the delivery of CBD and other cannabinoids, it’s clear that cannabinoid medicine is still in its infancy. For now, we’ll continue to take CBD in tinctures, topicals and vape form. The bill has already resulted in major changes to the hemp industry, allowing for the farming, processing and sale of products made from hemp. Hemp, which contains no more than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) has now been removed from the government’s Controlled Substances Act. \n\nLike many laws, the passage of the Farm Bill initially raises more questions than answers, namely: Does the legalization of hemp mean cannabis will become federally legal? Let’s break down what we know—and what we don’t know.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\n### The FDA, Not the Farm Bill, Controls the Regulation of CBD\n\nCannabidiol (CBD) is found in both hemp and cannabis plants rich in THC. Many farmers are excited about the possibility of growing hemp, which is where the CBD in cosmetics and wellness products comes from. \n\nBut it’s the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that regulates CBD. And recently, [the agency concluded that “CBD is a drug.”](https://www.marketwatch.com/story/despite-hemp-legalization-fda-will-still-consider-cbd-products-illegal-2018-12-23)\n\nThe FDA states that it’s illegal to add hemp-derived CBD to any food or health product without its approval. This action may make it harder and costlier for cannabis businesses to move forward with manufacturing CBD products.\n\n### States Must Also Create Laws to Regulate Hemp\n\nIn addition to the Farm Bill’s regulations, [individual states must approve their own laws](http://www.ncsl.org/research/agriculture-and-rural-development/state-industrial-hemp-statutes.aspx) regarding the farming, manufacturing and regulation of hemp. \n\nAs of February 2019, a number of states still don’t allow for hemp cultivation, including:\n\n* Idaho\n* Texas\n* South Dakota\n* Iowa\n* Louisiana\n* Mississippi\n* Georgia\n* Ohio \n* Connecticut \n\nLocal jurisdictions also have the ability to regulate hemp farming within their spheres of influence.\n\n### The Farm Bill Brings Cannabis Confusion\n\nWith the ink barely dry on the Farm Bill, there have already been [two high-profile arrests and seizures of legal hemp](https://mjbizdaily.com/marijuana-or-hemp-manufacturers-snagged-by-farm-bill-confusion/) during transportation from farms to CBD manufacturing sites. \n\nThe arrests occurred despite the Farm Bill’s guarantee that “no state or Indian tribe shall prohibit the transportation or shipment of hemp or hemp products.”\n\nIn one instance, a [Colorado CBD manufacturer may have to wait months for the release of about 7,000 pounds of Oregon-grown hemp](https://hempindustrydaily.com/hemp-thc-testing-farm-bill-confusion/). Even though the plants have been tested four times and have been shown to fall within the federal THC limits, the raw hemp was confiscated by Idaho authorities, who say that the plants may not cross their state borders.\n\nIndividual states are still developing their own hemp guidelines. Currently in California, it’s illegal to include hemp-derived oils in food products. And even the cannabis-friendly [Golden State has no agency overseeing the regulation of hemp-derived CBD](https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CEH/DFDCS/CDPH%20Document%20Library/FDB/FoodSafetyProgram/HEMP/Web%20template%20for%20FSS%20Rounded%20-%20Final.pdf).\n\n### Will Cannabis Farmers Start Growing Hemp? \n\nUntil the numbers look better for hemp farmers, it’s unlikely that many marijuana cultivators will switch from growing their THC-rich cannabis strains to hemp. For now, the [per-acre return on cannabis remains higher than hemp](https://www.emeraldreport.com/farm-bill-hemp-california/). \n\nRELATED: [ONE HEMP FARMER’S TRANSITION FROM CATTLE TO CANNABIS](https://hellomd.com/articles/one-hemp-farmers-transition-from-cattle-to-cannabis/)\n\n### Too Close for Comfort: Hemp & Cannabis Plants Must Be Kept Apart\n\nThe Farm Bill has also created a fascinating challenge for cultivators in the states where cannabis is legal: how to tackle proximity issues between hemp and cannabis plants.\n\nThe cross-pollination between two types of cannabis can result in both sharing genetic information. For example, consider what happens when a male hemp plant grown for its fiber, and a female cannabis plant bred for high-THC levels cross-pollinate. This could result in a significant drop in the THC levels of marijuana plants that come in contact with industrial hemp. \n\nThis issue has already concerned farmers in areas like Mendocino County, part of California’s famed Emerald Triangle, where [county supervisors recently declared a freeze on hemp cultivation](https://www.northbaybusinessjournal.com/northbay/sonomacounty/9359172-181/california-cross-pollination-cannabis-marijuana-law), in part because of the complex cross-pollination issues. \n\nBecause [cannabis pollen can travel between three and 30 miles](https://www.thecannabist.co/2015/06/18/safe-distance-hemp-marijuana-pollination/33130/), this issue has the potential to permanently alter the cannabis industry. \n\nIn Oregon, some outdoor cannabis farmers are [avoiding cross-pollination by moving to indoor operations](https://www.forbes.com/sites/andrebourque/2019/01/31/how-hemp-is-moving-oregon-marijuana-to-an-indoor-grow-crop/#76a0211060ed). Others are trying their hand at hemp farming, in part because of their transferable skill sets, and also because of the increased ability to secure loans and insurance. \n\n### Following the Money: Cannabis-Hemp Acquisitions Are on the Rise\n\nCanada-based Tilray, one of the world’s largest producers of medical marijuana products, [recently acquired Manitoba Harvest, the world’s largest manufacturer of hemp food products](https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/19/02/13261972/cannabis-companies-beginning-to-ante-up-for-bets-on-hemp). \n\nCanopy Growth, Canada’s largest cannabis stock by revenue, just announced that it acquired hemp company AgriNext USA. Canopy states that it intends to build the [first hemp industrial park in the United States](https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/19/03/13402200/canopy-growth-announces-acquisition-of-agrinextusa-expanding-hemp-bu). AgriNext’s plan is to build more hemp parks, enabling farmers to engage in one-stop destination services that will help both farmers and entrepreneurs. \n\nWith [Martha Stewart joining Canopy Growth to create hemp-CBD products](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/01/business/martha-stewart-cannabis-pot.html/), it seems that investors aren’t concerned about maintaining separation between hemp and cannabis.\n\n### Hemp’s Small Amount of THC Causes Problems \n\nFarmers and companies manufacturing hemp-derived CBD products must ensure that their products test at or below the 0.3% THC as required by the Farm Bill. Currently, no federal guidelines regarding testing exist. The potential for problems in this area increases with the Farm Bill’s allowance for interstate transport of hemp. \n\nThough the Farm Bill’s passage should have clarified that hemp only contains negligible amounts of THC and provided farmers with opportunities to grow a crop that’s currently more lucrative than farming corn, many sticking points remain. \n\n### Has the Government Sorted Out How to Regulate CBD? \n\nThe FDA estimates it could take years to complete the rulemaking process for regulating CBD. And despite the Farm Bill’s passage, outgoing FDA chief Scott Gottlieb still questions [whether the Drug Enforcement Administration has formally descheduled hemp-derived CBD](https://hempindustrydaily.com/fda-commissioner-rules-for-cbd-in-food-supplements-could-take-years/). \n\nFarmers are imploring the U.S. Department of Agriculture to complete its rulemaking, so that spring planting can take place in 2020. In the meantime, they’re asking for:\n\n* Access to crop insurance\n* Other federal financial resources\n* National standards for THC testing labs \n* An end to the restriction of seed imports \n\nThese types of rulings have the potential to create a framework that may help pave the way for federal legalization of cannabis, and [research on hemp cultivation](https://hempindustrydaily.com/california-hemp-company-sponsored-to-help-research-high-cbd-cultivars/) has the potential to help all farmers identify the best ways to grow cannabis commercially. \n\nIt appears that the tiniest fraction of THC and arguments about CBD have created significant problems for the rollout of commercial hemp farming. Looking at these challenges, it becomes easier to understand why federally legal cannabis may remain a pipe dream for a few more years.\n\nPhoto credit: Alexandr Grant/Shutterstock.com\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. CBD can help your dog by: \n\n- Easing anxiety\n- Alleviating pain\n- Quelling gastrointestinal distress \n- Reducing seizures\n\nGiven all of these benefits, it’s no surprise that there are a ton of CBD dog treats on the market—all with various ingredients and different doses. \n\nBut have you ever thought about making your own CBD-infused dog treats? It may sound silly—even a little frivolous—but it is actually simple, easy, and, most importantly, practical. \n\nWhen you make your own CBD-infused dog treats, you get to control the amount of CBD that goes into each batch. This allows you to cater your CBD dog treats specifically to your pup’s needs. And as an added bonus, you get to:\n\n- Pick your pet’s favorite flavors\n- Avoid ingredients that don’t sit well with their bellies\n- Maybe even save a few bucks \n\n![Hello1-min (41).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_41_2ac1f0f47b.png)\n\nHaving CBD dog treats on hand is also convenient. You can take them with you on outings with your K9 and administer them as the situation calls. \n\nThis recipe for CBD dog treats contains only five ingredients, including a hemp CBD tincture. You can use a tincture that’s marketed specifically for dogs, like [Holistic Hound’s tinctures](https://holistichound.com/), which come in 100 mg, 250 mg, and 500 mg concentrations. Or you can opt for a plain, flavorless tincture like [Cured Nutrition’s Full Spectrum Raw Oil](https://www.curednutrition.com/product/raw-daily-hemp-oil/). \n\nWhatever you decide to use in your CBD-infused dog treats, make sure to double-check that the tincture has been lab-tested for potency as well as the presence of pesticides and heavy metals. You’ll also want to ensure that the tincture doesn’t have any added essential oils, which could potentially be harmful to your pup.\n\nLastly, feel free to use any type of flour you’d like in your CBD-infused dog treats. Wheat or other grains don’t sit well with some dogs. If this is the case, opt for alternative flours like rice, almond, or coconut flour. \n\n![Hello3-min (33).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello3_min_33_954cfa1b62.png)\n\n### Ingredients for Peanut Butter & Pumpkin CBD Dog Treats\n\n- 3 cups of flour of your choice\n- 2 large eggs\n- 2/3 cup pumpkin puree\n- 1/4 cup peanut butter\n- hemp CBD tincture (amount you use is up to you)\n\nHere are a few things to consider: \n\n- The number of CBD-infused dog treats that this recipe makes depends on how you decide to divide up the dough.\n\n- Think about how much CBD you want in each dog treat. \n\nUse these two factors to determine how much of your hemp CBD tincture to use. For example, if you think you can make 36 CBD dog treats, and you want each treat to contain 2 mg of CBD, use about 72 mg of CBD for your recipe. \n\n![Hello2-min (39).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello2_min_39_f4932b35f5.png)\n\n### How to Make Peanut Butter & Pumpkin CBD Dog Treats\n\n- 1.) Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a baking sheet or line one with parchment paper. \n- 2.) Using a whisk or electric mixer, beat pumpkin puree, peanut butter, eggs, and hemp CBD oil until well combined. It’s important that you mix these ingredients well, as you want the CBD oil to be well dispersed. \n- 3.) Gradually add in 2 1/2 cups of flour, mixing until all ingredients are well incorporated. \n- 4.) If dough is still sticky, slowly add more flour in 1/4 cup increments until the dough loses its stickiness. \n- 5.) Using a lightly floured surface, knead the dough until it comes together. \n- 6.) Use a rolling pin to roll out the dough—we recommend getting it to about a 1/4 inch thickness. Use cookie cutters or a shot glass to cut out shapes and place them onto your prepared baking sheet. \n- 7.) Bake in the oven until golden brown, about 20 minutes. \n- 8.) Let treats cool completely before serving. No matter your age, where you live or what you do for a living, chances are you’ve experienced some type of anxiety—from a short-lived episode before a big event (hello wedding day or big presentation at work) to a chronic feeling that’s always there in the background. \n\nAccording to a 2018 survey by the American Psychiatric Association, [40% of Americans felt more anxious than they did the year before](http://time.com/5269371/americans-anxiety-poll/). And about 40 million Americans are thought to suffer from some type of anxiety disorder. \n\nFor many, it can be embarrassing to seek help for anxiety. For others, it’s hard to know where to look for help. Some folks have found that consuming cannabidiol (CBD) provides an effective respite from anxious thoughts. \n\nCBD is a marijuana cannabinoid that doesn’t produce a head high like the other famous cannabinoid, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), can. But it has been shown to help temper anxiety. \n\nFor example, in a small study from 2011, a group of [people with social anxiety disorder took either CBD or a placebo before a test](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3079847/). The subjects who consumed CBD felt less anxious and their physiological signs of anxiety, like elevated blood pressure and heart rate, decreased compared to that of the placebo group. \n\nIf you’re interested in taking CBD to help calm anxiety, check out our three most popular Q&As about CBD for anxiety. Is there any evidence that CBD helps with anxiety and what way is best for me to consume it?\n**_I don’t live in a legal marijuana state, but I have terrible anxiety and have heard that CBD derived from the hemp plant may be something I can try._**\n\nAnswer: [@BartSmart](https://www.hellolift.com/people/5817af1a97ed67000a00143c/bartsmart) In my opinion, it wouldn't hurt to try CBD that’s derived from the hemp plant. The difference between hemp-derived CBD and cannabis-derived CBD is the amount of THC in the plant.\n\nI have heard success with vaporizing CBD for quickest relief during an anxiety attack, while using CBD edibles regularly to maintain homeostasis, or a balance in one's mind and body.\n\nCBD promotes neurogenesis which can have a calming effect on people leading to a decrease of anxiety for some.\n\nCBD comes from agriculturally derived hemp and you would just want to make sure that your hemp is responsibly sourced.\n\nWe at HelloMD have heard of many testimonials about CBD helping people deal with their anxiety.\n\n### Q. What is a good starting dose of CBD oil for anxiety and pain relief?\n**_I have some softgels and tincture._** \n\nAnswer: [@helenanp](https://www.hellolift.com/people/59820d531d86bf357ccec0d3/helenanp) The right amount of CBD oil will vary from person to person. We each have a unique endocannabinoid system, so some people will require less, and others will require more. \n\nIt’s best to start with a low dosage and then slightly raise this dosage until you receive the desired result. I would start with a drop of CBD oil a day and see how it affects you. Every 2–3 weeks I would increase by an additional drop. Remember to space the drops throughout the day. \n\nContinue to increase by a drop every 2–3 weeks until your symptoms decrease. You need to experiment a little to see what dosage is best for you.\n\n### Q.
