Experiencing chronic stress puts your body under unnecessary pressure, like being continuously under attack. Red alert: that's not good news for your health and wellbeing. In this all-natural DIY smoothie we combine ingredients, such as CBD and blueberries, which will help combat stress and leave a sweet taste in your mouth!\n\n### Fight or Flight \n\nYour body is purpose-built to react to threatening situations. For instance, a fast Mac truck comes toward you while walking in a crosswalk; your body will activate your adrenal glands. In turn, the [adrenal gland releases a surge of hormones](https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/stress-management/in-depth/stress/art-20046037), including adrenaline and cortisol. Adrenaline will raise your heart rate and blood pressure while cortisol will lower nonessential thinking - so you're able to get out the situation fast. \n\nOur flight or flight is the ultimate stress-response system. But if we activate it too frequently, it stays in \"on\" mode more or less permanently. Chronic stress will overexpose your body to stress hormones and make you more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and decreased immunity.\n\n### Managing Your Stress\n\nEliminating stress is not always possible, but learning how to manage your stress may positively impact your life and overall health. Understanding what events stress you and how you react are the first steps to improvement. Taking care of yourself and [developing stress management strategies](https://www.webmd.com/balance/stress-management/stress-management) are also critical. Two well-known strategies for fighting stress are to exercise regularly and eating healthy, well-balanced meals.\n\nBelow is our recipe for a stress-busting hemp CBD-infused green smoothie. Not only is it delicious, but it's also a nutrient-dense and healthy meal replacement. Ingredients include antioxidant-rich superfoods chock full of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and the superhero of anxiety relief: CBD.\n\nHere are more details on each ingredient and why they are powerful stress reducers:\n\n### Hemp-Derived CBD\n\nHemp-derived CBD is the one-two stress management punch in our healthy smoothie. CBD is known to address a host of common conditions such as: \n\n- Anxiety\n- Stress\n- Depression\n- Insomnia\n- Pain\n- Inflammation\n- Excema & skin issues\n\n### Cashews\n\nCashews are delicious on their own, but in a smoothie, they add creamy goodness. Packed with iron, B6, and magnesium, a handful of cashews a day boost our mood and quell anxiety. Cashews are also a fantastic source of the amino acid tryptophan. This wonder amino helps with our serotonin's uptake, which helps us to feel our best selves. It also happens to be a precursor to the hormone itself. \n\n### Avocado\n\nB vitamins help our bodies beat back nervous energy and even promote healthier brain cells. B vitamins are known to relieve stress, and avocados are full of them. Avocado is also full of healthy monounsaturated fat and potassium, and in a smoothie, an avocado is an excellent replacement for animal-based milk. \n\n### Super Greens\n\nSpinach and kale are both rich in magnesium; which is vital for proper growth and maintenance of bones. But magnesium also allows our systems to function properly. [Psychology Today](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/evolutionary-psychiatry/201801/magnesium-depression) says that magnesium is one of the most essential minerals for the body to function properly.\n\n### Blueberries\n\nBerries, in general, are great stress-busters, but blueberries in particular, hold the most antioxidants. Antioxidants are known to memory, sharpen cognition as well as to lower blood pressure. High in vitamin C, blueberries combat stress and lower cortisol levels.\n\n### Pineapple\n\nWith higher levels of Vitamin C, pineapple is another good addition to your smoothie. Other fruits such as kiwi, cantaloupe, or papaya are suitable substitutes for pineapple. They are all packed with immune-boosting properties and will also help to lower cortisol levels. We love pineapple because of the taste, and when mixed with spinach, your smoothie will become a vibrant green hue!\n\n### Lion's Mane Powder\n\nLion's mane mushrooms have been linked to new [growth of brain cells: hericenones and erinacines.](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/lions-mane-mushroom#TOC_TITLE_HDR_2) Studies have found that lion's mane is also a potent anti-inflammatory. In addition, researchers believe it to reduce anxiety and depression by improved functioning of the hippocampus.\n\n### Maca Powder\n\n[A recent study](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18784609) indicated that maca root might reduce anxiety and stress while at the same time increasing libido. People claim that maca also decreases the instances of erectile dysfunction when taken regularly and flavonoids may be why. [A 2015 study](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24931003) also found that maca could reduce symptoms of depression in postmenopausal women.\n\n### Ingredients for Hemp CBD-Infused Green Smoothie\n\n- 1 full dropper of hemp-derived CBD\n\n- 1 handful of unsalted cashews\n\n- 1/2 an avocado\n\n- 1 handful of spinach or kale\n\n- 1 handful of blueberries\n\n- 2 large spears of pineapple\n\n- 1/2 tsp of Lion's Mane powder\n\n- 1/2 tsp Maca root powder\n\n- 1 small container of coconut vanilla yogurt\n\n- 1 handful of ice\n\n### How to Make It\n\nThis is pretty simple. Put all the ingredients in your blender or Nutri Bullet and mix it! If it is too thick, add a little water and mix again. Enjoy!\n\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.5037593984962405,"src":"/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/ee604/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.png","srcSet":"/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/69585/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.png 200w,\n/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/497c6/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.png 400w,\n/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/ee604/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.png 800w,\n/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/f3583/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.png 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/58556/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/61e93/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.webp 200w,\n/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/1f5c5/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.webp 400w,\n/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/58556/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.webp 800w,\n/static/26ad1eb8dac6e908e7a02e5851777f11/99238/21e5ccaa250d3fe13315450b8780a7b7.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3100-markdown","title":"Can You Replace Prednisone With CBD for Inflammation?","slug":"can-you-replace-prednisone-with-cbd-for-inflammation","content":"Inflammation is a powerful part of the body’s natural processes for healing wounds, fighting infections and destroying damaged cells. But unchecked, chronic inflammation can also [contribute to a long list of conditions](https://www.livescience.com/52344-inflammation.html) such as heart disease and rheumatoid arthritis. \n\nTo combat the effects of inflammation, doctors often prescribe corticosteroid medications such as Prednisone, but these potent steroid drugs can cause some serious side effects. Now, though, research indicates that cannabidiol (CBD) could be as effective as Prednisone for reducing chronic inflammation, without the risks of strong steroid medications. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\n### What Causes Inflammation?\n\nInflammation can appear to be a bad thing. It’s made headlines lately as the reason behind a variety of serious health problems, and it drives the creation of numerous anti-inflammatory diets, supplements and lifestyle recommendations. \n\nBut [inflammation is an essential tool](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/248423.php) for the body to heal itself. It’s an immune response that repairs damaged tissue and eliminates foreign invaders from the system. And without it, the body wouldn’t be able to heal from wounds and infections.\n\nAcute inflammation is an immediate immune response. When an injury happens, the damaged tissues release cytokines, proteins that signal the body to release a hormone called prostaglandins. The body also releases specialized white blood cells called neutrophils to repair the problem. This immune response also causes blood vessels to enlarge so that proteins and fluids can reach the site of the injury.\n\nRELATED: [HOW CBD CAN CURB CHRONIC INFLAMMATION](https://hellomd.ca/articles/how-cannabis-can-relieve-colitis-pain-and-inflammation/)\n\nThat’s why when you have a wound, you may experience:\n\n* Redness\n* Swelling\n* Pain \n\nAs the inflammation response progresses, fever can develop, and fluids can collect at the site of the damage. \n\nA similar process happens when pathogens such as bacteria or viruses enter the body, or the body is exposed to irritants like chemicals or allergens. In those cases, inflammation can cause symptoms such as:\n\n* Fever\n* Chills \n* Muscle and joint pain\n\nAcute inflammation typically subsides once healing is complete. But [inflammation can also become chronic](https://www.healthline.com/health/chronic-inflammation). \n\nSometimes the immune system simply can’t overcome a particular pathogen or foreign body, although it keeps trying. In certain situations, the immune response itself goes into overdrive, attacking healthy cells and tissues. That’s the cause of autoimmune diseases such as lupus. \n\n[Obesity can also trigger inflammation](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/08/140825084836.htm), and so can [stress](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5476783/), which increases the production of the hormones cortisol and adrenaline.\n\nChronic inflammation can last for months or years. It’s associated with many common health conditions, including:\n\n* Rheumatoid arthritis\n* Cardiovascular disease\n* Peptic ulcers\n* Ulcerative colitis\n* Crohn’s disease\n* Type 2 diabetes\n* Asthma\n* Cancer\n* Neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease\n\nThe symptoms of chronic inflammation are often subtle. They include:\n\n* Fever\n* Fatigue\n* Rashes\n* Abdominal pain\n* Chest pain\n* Muscle and joint pain\n* Fatigue\n* Unexplained rashes and skin eruptions\n\n### What Is Prednisone & Why Is It Prescribed? \n\nIn some cases, diet and lifestyle changes can reset the immune response and reduce inflammation throughout the body. If those strategies don’t provide relief, medications can help, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like: \n\n* Aspirin\n* Ibuprofen \n* Naproxen (Aleve) \n\nBut for severe inflammation and immune system dysfunction, doctors may also prescribe corticosteroids such as Prednisone.\n\nLike other corticosteroids, [Prednisone can decrease inflammation](https://www.webmd.com/drugs/2/drug-6007-9383/prednisone-oral/prednisone-oral/details) by actively suppressing the immune system. But this can create other problems. Common side effects of Prednisone include:\n\n* Vision problems\n* Elevated blood pressure\n* Gastrointestinal problems such as nausea and heartburn\n* Muscle pain and cramping\n* Mental and mood changes\n* Skin problems such as thinning and easy bruising\n* Sweating\n* Weight gain\n* Puffy face\n* Increased risk of infections \n\nThe risks of Prednisone and other corticosteroids increase the longer they’re taken. To avoid those risks and the everyday discomforts these medications can cause, many people are turning to CBD. \n\n### CBD Is a Natural Anti-Inflammatory\n\nCBD is just one of more than one hundred known compounds in the _Cannabis sativa_ plant. But it’s been the subject of numerous studies dedicated to understanding its many benefits for the human body. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD doesn’t make people feel high. \n\nBut among its documented properties is the ability to fight inflammation and restore a state of homeostasis, or balance, to the body’s many interconnected subsystems.\n\nThe human body produces natural cannabinoid chemicals, called endocannabinoids, that activate responses in a large network of cellular receptors called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). But cannabinoids like CBD are so similar to natural endocannabinoids that they can occupy the same space on endocannabinoid cell receptors and activate them in the same way. \n\nCBD can trigger cannabinoid receptors directly, but it can also act indirectly by activating or inhibiting other processes.\n\nSome research reveals that CBD can inhibit the activity of an enzyme called COX-2. This enzyme triggers the production of prostaglandins, the inflammatory proteins that mobilize to repair damage to cells and tissues. \n\n[CBD also appears to support the activity of a protein coding gene](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2220031/) called peroxisome proliferator activated receptor—gamma (PPARg). \n\nThis gene can inhibit the expression of cytokines and direct immune cells toward expressing non-inflammatory functions.\n\n### Replacing or Reducing Prednisone With CBD\n\nCBD works with the body’s systems to reduce the activity of processes that lead to inflammation, and that makes CBD an appealing alternative to Prednisone and other corticosteroids. CBD could allow people to reduce their Prednisone dose, or stop taking it completely. But [taking the two together](https://cbdeducationonline.com/cbd-and-prednisone/) could be risky.\n\nLiver enzymes known as CYP450 process about 60% of all medications. One of these, CYP3A4, breaks down Prednisone in order to make it available to the body. \n\nBut CBD strongly inhibits the activity of CYP3A4, so that higher amounts of Prednisone enter the bloodstream. This can amplify the drug’s many side effects and raise the risk of severe symptoms like:\n\n* Blurred vision\n* Shortness of breath \n* Mood changes\n\nBut the powerful anti-inflammatory properties of CBD could also help folks to reduce their use of Prednisone and other corticosteroids. An [Israel-based biotech firm is investigating CBD](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/stero-biotechs-secures-patent-of-cbd-as-steroid-sparing-treatment-breakthrough-will-potentially-allow-significant-dosage-reduction-300703970.html) as a “steroid-sparing” treatment that could reduce the side effects of potent steroids. \n\nAnd recent research on the ways CBD inhibits inflammation processes suggests that [CBD could be the source of new drugs to treat inflammation-based diseases](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2828614/). \n\nInflammation is an essential tool for healing, but chronic inflammation can lead to serious health problems. CBD can work with the body’s own systems to keep inflammation in check, without the many side effects of Prednisone and other prescription steroid drugs.\n\nPhoto credit: fizkes/Shutterstock.com\n\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3888888888888888,"src":"/static/8c88697a99875733f028995e2a7cf356/14b42/ae711f74b3c36a0c3c95ac80e2faa576.jpg","srcSet":"/static/8c88697a99875733f028995e2a7cf356/f836f/ae711f74b3c36a0c3c95ac80e2faa576.jpg 200w,\n/static/8c88697a99875733f028995e2a7cf356/2244e/ae711f74b3c36a0c3c95ac80e2faa576.jpg 400w,\n/static/8c88697a99875733f028995e2a7cf356/14b42/ae711f74b3c36a0c3c95ac80e2faa576.jpg 800w,\n/static/8c88697a99875733f028995e2a7cf356/47498/ae711f74b3c36a0c3c95ac80e2faa576.jpg 1200w,\n/static/8c88697a99875733f028995e2a7cf356/0e329/ae711f74b3c36a0c3c95ac80e2faa576.jpg 1600w,\n/static/8c88697a99875733f028995e2a7cf356/ffa36/ae711f74b3c36a0c3c95ac80e2faa576.jpg 1773w","srcWebp":"/static/8c88697a99875733f028995e2a7cf356/58556/ae711f74b3c36a0c3c95ac80e2faa576.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/8c88697a99875733f028995e2a7cf356/61e93/ae711f74b3c36a0c3c95ac80e2faa576.webp 200w,\n/static/8c88697a99875733f028995e2a7cf356/1f5c5/ae711f74b3c36a0c3c95ac80e2faa576.webp 400w,\n/static/8c88697a99875733f028995e2a7cf356/58556/ae711f74b3c36a0c3c95ac80e2faa576.webp 800w,\n/static/8c88697a99875733f028995e2a7cf356/99238/ae711f74b3c36a0c3c95ac80e2faa576.webp 1200w,\n/static/8c88697a99875733f028995e2a7cf356/7c22d/ae711f74b3c36a0c3c95ac80e2faa576.webp 1600w,\n/static/8c88697a99875733f028995e2a7cf356/d1528/ae711f74b3c36a0c3c95ac80e2faa576.webp 1773w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2952-markdown","title":"Easing Acute Inflammation With Cannabis Terpenes","slug":"easing-acute-inflammation-with-cannabis-terpenes","content":"A recent study is shining a light on yet another component of the cannabis plant: terpenes. In Mexico, cannabis has been used to make _linamenta_ for generations. _Linamenta_ is cannabis flower soaked in alcohol to create a cooling, bracing body rub to soothe sore muscles. \n\nAs the plant gained in popularity throughout the U.S., family farmers and herbalists began experimenting with their own homegrown medicines. Though largely anecdotal, medical cannabis consumers lauded the plant’s place in reducing pain, particularly for those suffering from inflammatory illnesses and conditions.\n\n### Science Identifies Unique Medical Properties in Cannabinoids\n\nAs time went on, our understanding of the cannabis plant has expanded exponentially. Researchers started identifying scores of cannabinoids like THC and CBD. \n\nAt first, marijuana breeders focused on increasing a strain’s THC profile to maximize the high associated with cannabis. But soon, a range of medical properties were found in the lesser-known cannabinoids such as:\n\n* Cannabigerol (CBG)\n* [Cannabinol (CBN)](https://hellomd.com/articles/having-trouble-sleeping-try-non-psychoactive-cbn/)\n* [Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA)](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-to-make-the-most-of-non-psychoactive-thca/)\n\nEach of these cannabinoids are associated with unique, healing profiles we’re only beginning to understand.\n\nRELATED: [BEYOND THC & CBD: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CBC, CBN & CBG](https://hellomd.com/articles/beyond-thc-and-cbd-what-you-need-to-know-about-cbc-cbn-and-cbg/)\n\n### Terpenes: The Next Generation of Cannabis Science\n\nWhen you take a whiff of your cannabis flower, you’re not smelling cannabinoids; you’re smelling terpenes: the aromatic, chemical expressions of cannabis [responsible for the plant’s flavor and smell](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a99e9f4f24d1300077ccb6f/cannabis-terpenes-pack-a-therapeutic-punch). \n\nRELATED: [FOLLOW YOUR NOSE: USING AROMA TO GUIDE YOUR CANNABIS CHOICES](https://hellomd.com/articles/follow-your-nose-using-aroma-to-guide-your-cannabis-choices/)\n\nTerpenes aren’t unique to cannabis; they’re responsible for the scents of plants throughout the botanical kingdom. When you sample the scents at your natural food store’s essential oil counter, you’re smelling terpenes. When you breathe in the woody scent of a pine forest, you’re smelling [pinene](https://hellomd.com/articles/know-your-terpenes-pinene/), a terpene found in stately pine trees and cannabis plants.\n\nScientists have identified more than 100 terpenes in the cannabis plant, and we’re just beginning to understand their importance as enhancers of the plant’s healing and medicinal properties. \n\nFor example, the terpene [linalool](https://hellomd.com/articles/know-your-cannabis-terpenes-linalool/) is associated with reducing anxiety and pain. Meanwhile, the terpene [limonene](https://hellomd.com/articles/know-your-cannabis-terpenes-limonene/) has shown anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties. \n\n### The Significance of Terpenoids in Reducing Inflammation\n\nThe [2018 Israeli study](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6308289/) set out to study whether terpenoids, essential oils processed from terpenes, had a beneficial effect on pain reduction and inflammation. \n\nThe goal of the study was to compare the analgesic effects of three types of terpenoids to CBD. What the researchers found was that the three terpenoid essential oils—each of which contained up to four dozen different terpenes—were effective in addressing acute inflammatory conditions. \n\nIn contrast, CBD appeared to relieve chronic inflammatory conditions more effectively. The researchers tested animal subjects as well as performed cellular studies in vitro. Though more testing is needed, it’s clear that terpenes play an important role in cannabis medicine. \n\n### How Can I Find Cannabis With the Terpene Profile That’s Right for me? \n\nIn the same way that the cannabis industry has exploded with products containing CBD, [terpenes are becoming a standalone product](https://mjbizmagazine.com/cashing-in-on-the-terpene-trend/), sometimes added to foods at cannabis eateries, and often added to flavorless cannabis distillates, giving the final product a distinct flavor and aroma. \n\nTerpenes themselves aren’t psychoactive, and they exist in many other plants. This is why some manufacturers use terpenes from other plants to augment their cannabis distillates. \n\nThe best way to figure out which terpenes are beneficial for you is to [study terpene profiles](https://hellomd.com/articles/3-popular-questions-about-marijuana-and-terpenes-answered/). In legal cannabis states like California, cannabis products that advertise terpenes must be tested to confirm the type and percentage of terpenes. Call your product manufacturer, and ask if they can tell you the terpene profile present in the products you buy.\n\nThat said, the nose knows. If you consume cannabis flowers, do a blind scent test. See which flowers you gravitate towards, and then check the strain. Chances are you’ll be attracted to the terpenes your body needs most. \n\nPhoto credit: Maridav/Shutterstock.com\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. Like facets on a diamond, CBD is a part of the whole, but its unique properties are showing great promise in addressing a variety of medical conditions and improving the quality of people’s lives. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nOne of these ways is by treating inflammation, an underlying and sometimes chronic condition that’s linked to many health concerns from arthritis to diabetes to heart disease.\n\n### What Is Inflammation? \n\n[Inflammation](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/248423.php) is one way our body’s immune system responds to assaults such as an infection, an injury or a chronic condition. \n\nNearly all of us have experienced many types of inflammation. There’s temporary inflammation like:\n\n* The pain of a swollen, sprained ankle\n* The exhaustion associated with a high fever \n\nThese kinds of temporary inflammation can usually be treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen. \n\nChronic inflammation, on the other hand, is associated with long-term conditions. They often create debilitating pain, because the body just can’t get rid of what’s causing the inflammation in the first place. Just a few examples include:\n\n* Crohn’s disease\n* Asthma\n* Psoriasis\n* Irritable bowel disorders \n* Arthritis \n\n### Studying CBD’s Role in Curbing Inflammation \n\nStudies are beginning to reveal just how [significant the role CBD may play](https://cbdstasis.com/cbd-inflammation-studies-summarized/) in the development of anti-inflammatory, cannabis-based medicine and therapeutics. \n\nBut researchers have barely scratched the surface of CBD’s applications, and studies have also shown how [CBD can both reduce and increase inflammatory responses](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3632657/). \n\nYet science is making tremendous strides in confirming what so many medical marijuana consumers know: that CBD use can elicit incredible anti-inflammatory responses. \n\nFor this reason, it’s imperative that anyone embarking on a CBD-based treatment do so in conjunction with a [trusted, cannabis-supportive doctor](www.hellomd.com). Another piece of the puzzle is making sure you take clean products that are sourced, tested and trusted by patients and providers. \n\n### One CBD Company’s Roots in Arthritis-Related Pain & Inflammation\n\nOne Washington state-based company, which produces high-quality, lab-tested CBD topicals derived from hemp and other healing herbs is Basic Jane.\n\nJessica Tonani and Kersten Beyer started Basic Jane after becoming friendly as neighbors. Kersten’s training as a clinical research nurse and Jessica’s background in biotech were the perfect skillset to research and manufacture Basic Jane’s CBD-infused topical products. \n\n“I was in the traditional biotech, hardcore science world,” says Jessica, who was conducting genomic research prior to starting Basic Jane. When she began studying cannabis over a decade ago, navigating the system was challenging.\n\n“When I decided to form the company, my colleagues and friends thought I was crazy. Now I’m getting calls from the same people asking if we have any job openings,” she says. \n\nFrom the beginning, Jessica and Kersten were interested specifically in CBD. “Kersten’s mother had arthritis. We read two research papers that showed promise with the reduction of arthritis pain in mice that were given CBD. Our first goal was to try to decrease the aches and pains for Kersten’s mom,” Jessica explains. \n\n“Kersten’s mom had many friends in her age group who also had arthritis, and they were begging for something to help them, which really assisted us with product development,” says Jessica. But anecdotal evidence wasn’t enough. “I’m a 100% scientist at heart. As Kersten was doing formulations, I was saying, ‘Show me how this works.’” \n\nWhat started as an impulse to help Jessica’s mother transformed into a business manufacturing a variety of topical CBD products.\n\nInitially, Jessica and Kersten used a blend of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and CBD in their topicals. “We started with a combination and did studies using products with and without THC. Then we conducted dosing studies. We eliminated the THC from the topicals and discovered, to my surprise, that the omission of THC didn’t decrease the pain relief. We found we didn’t need THC.”\n\n### How Does CBD Reduce Inflammation? \n\n“There are a lot of different scientific theories on how CBD works,” says Jessica. In lay people’s terms, CBD appears to decrease inflammatory signals. Studies show that cannabis disrupts signaling proteins called cytokines, which are part of the body’s inflammatory process. \n\n“Cytokines are molecules that tell your body you need to fix something, which leads to inflammation and damage in certain ways. CBD decreases these inflammatory signals,” she continues.\n\n“We also discovered that along with decreasing inflammation, CBD decreases the anxiety around that inflammation. CBD tells your body that it can relax, reducing the anxiety associated with having pain.” Jessica’s research has led her to conclude that topical applications of CBD are the best way to maximize its anti-inflammatory qualities.\n\n### How Do I Use CBD to Reduce My Inflammatory Condition? \n\nIf you decide to try CBD topicals to tackle pain and inflammation, Jessica recommends applying your CBD topical every four hours, or as needed. Since hemp-derived CBD products are non-psychoactive, there isn’t a concern about getting high while using them.\n\n“We’ve found that repeated applications help keep inflammation down. Some use our products morning and night. Others use creams or gels at home and our sprays at work,” says Jessica. “Different delivery systems seem to work best with different body chemistries, so experimenting is encouraged.”\n\n### The Importance of Finding & Using Trusted CBD Manufacturers \n\nThere are lots of hemp CBD products on the market. But some aren’t lab-tested and come from hemp grown using pesticides and other chemicals that end up in the final product. Even with topicals, you want to make sure that they don’t contain any harmful ingredients and that the product actually contains the amount of healing CBD that it says on the label. \n\n“One of most important things for anyone using CBD products is that all CBD should be tested,” advises Jessica. “You should know the concentration in the material you are using.”\n\n“Before any CBD enters our facility, it’s tested in its raw state by independent, third-party certifiers,” she adds. Jessica says that more testing is undertaken once their products are manufactured.\n\n### The Future of Hemp-Derived CBD Research \n\nJessica was thrilled to report that [Washington recently granted Basic Jane a state-issued license to research cannabis plant biology](https://www.thestranger.com/slog/2018/11/09/35297563/seattle-company-gets-washingtons-first-pot-research-license). \n\n“We’re very interested in some of the other molecules in cannabis, including cannabichromene CBC. Maybe the next awesome pain killer is within the cannabis plant. There are many amazing indications for some of the other, little-studied cannabinoids,” says Jessica.\n\nWith the passage of the Farm Bill, scientists like Jessica are hopeful that cannabinoid research will become easier to conduct. This way people can have more options to treat painful and potentially harmful conditions like inflammation to improve overall health and wellness.\n\nPhoto credit: [Tatiana](https://www.pexels.com/@tatiana-18128)\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3793103448275863,"src":"/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/14b42/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.jpg","srcSet":"/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/f836f/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.jpg 200w,\n/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/2244e/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.jpg 400w,\n/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/14b42/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.jpg 800w,\n/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/47498/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.jpg 1200w,\n/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/0e329/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.jpg 1600w,\n/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/75550/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.jpg 2345w","srcWebp":"/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/58556/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/61e93/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.webp 200w,\n/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/1f5c5/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.webp 400w,\n/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/58556/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.webp 800w,\n/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/99238/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.webp 1200w,\n/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/7c22d/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.webp 1600w,\n/static/55b60d62631070700c0d5f0cdf12174b/24477/c7e43827498ad2d1635e93a6c6569359.webp 2345w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2881-markdown","title":"Gift Guide: 7 Products for Those New to Hemp CBD","slug":"gift-guide-7-products-for-those-new-to-hemp-cbd","content":"Struggling to find the perfect gift for a few folks in your life? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are over 100 different types of arthritis, all of which share the similar symptoms of joint pain and stiffness.\n\nThe most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. There’s no cure for osteoarthritis, and while remission is the goal with rheumatoid arthritis, this is rarely achieved. Given these outcomes, managing symptoms like pain and inflammation are key to maintaining quality of life.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nMedications used to manage osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and sometimes opioids for pain. Other pharmaceuticals may also be prescribed depending on the type of arthritis involved. However, in many instances, management strategies come up short; medications can have detrimental side effects; and sometimes, patients simply want more options to manage their pain. \n\nThis is where cannabis and its anti-inflammatory properties come into the picture. At this point, it’s pretty widely acknowledged that cannabis can help with many different types of pain. Anecdotal evidence gathered from multiple sources—[a survey in the UK](http://files.iowamedicalmarijuana.org/science/misc/Ware-Guy%20Cannabis%20Use%20UK%20Intl%20J%20Clin%20Pract%202005.pdf), [another in Australia](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1262744/) and [one conducted by HelloMD with UC Berkeley](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/hellomd-and-uc-berkeley-release-study-on-cannabis-use-as-a-substitute-for-opioid-and-non-opioid-based-pain-medication)—support the idea of using cannabis to manage pain from myriad conditions, including arthritis. \n\nThough few clinical trials exist on arthritis of any kind, emerging evidence from preclinical research suggests that the endocannabinoid system is involved. By targeting this system with compounds from cannabis, scientists hope to one day create medicines to address inflammation and pain arising from both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. \n\n### Osteoarthritis & Rheumatoid Arthritis—What’s the Difference? \n\nWhile both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis involve inflammation of the joints that lead to pain, the reasons for these symptoms are different.\n\n#### What Is Osteoarthritis?\n\nJoints—the non-cannabis kind—are the places in the body where two bones meet. In osteoarthritis, the cartilage—a flexible connective tissue that covers the ends of bones—gradually wears away as we age. As this material breaks down, less of it is available to cushion the area where the two bones meet, leading to pain during movement. As the disease progresses, nerve damage can also occur. \n\nRELATED: [3 POPULAR QUESTIONS ABOUT MARIJUANA & ARTHRITIS ANSWERED](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a720780f24d1300077ccb25/3-popular-questions-about-marijuana-and-arthritis-answered)\n\nTypical osteoarthritis symptoms are deep, aching pains and stiffness, especially in the morning or after resting. Osteoarthritis is often the result of aging, but injuries or being overweight can also cause undue stress on the joints, leading to cartilage degeneration. Osteoarthritis is most common in joints that bear weight like the knees, hips, spine and feet. \n\n#### What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?\n\nRheumatoid arthritis, in contrast, is an autoimmune disease. The immune system attacks the joints, leading to inflammation and swelling of the joint linings, also called the synovia.\n\nIf left untreated, rheumatoid arthritis can lead to severe joint damage. Like many autoimmune diseases, we aren’t sure what causes rheumatoid arthritis. However, researchers think that genetics, environmental factors and possible infectious exposures play a role. \n\n### An Altered Endocannabinoid System in Osteoarthritis & Rheumatoid Arthritis Sufferers\n\nInside all of us is a network of receptors called the [endocannabinoid system (ECS)](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system). This system has receptors that are located throughout the body: in your brain, your gut, even your immune cells. Due to the prevalence of ECS receptors, scientists now think that the ECS plays a key role in essential life processes like eating, sleeping and reproducing. \n\nThe main receptors in the ECS are CB1, CB2 and TRPV1. Your body also makes endocannabinoids: anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), molecules that attach to these receptors to produce certain effects such as pain relief. Likewise, cannabis makes phytocannabinoids, like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) that can also attach to, or influence, these receptors. \n\nThe ECS plays a role in our immune process and how our bodies register pain. In patients with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, that system is altered. A study published in _Arthritis Research & Therapy_ looked at the joint fluid of both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis patients. Researchers found that both [CB1 and CB2 receptors were present in the patients’ joint linings](https://arthritis-research.biomedcentral.com/track/pdf/10.1186/ar2401). They also discovered that AEA and 2-AG were present in the joint fluid of both types of arthritis patients, and not present in the fluid of healthy volunteers. \n\nThe presence in the joint fluid of both endocannabinoid receptors and the substances that attach to them have made scientists speculate that manipulation of the ECS can lead to therapies that can address both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. \n\n### CBD Reduces Pain in Animal Models of Osteoarthritis\n\nFor now, the only published research on osteoarthritis and cannabis has been done in animal models. \n\nOne study looked at the effect of CBD on rats with osteoarthritis. The researchers injected the cannabinoid at the arthritis site and found that [CBD was able to stop pain sensations](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28885454/). They also noted that CBD prevented the development of further pain and nerve damage. \n\nAnother study looked at the effect of CBD applied transdermally on rats with osteoarthritis. Researchers found this method of administration to be effective: The rats had [reduced joint swelling and pain](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4851925/). \n\nResearch on osteoarthritis and cannabis continues, with [a human clinical trial](https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/record/NCT02324777) set to be completed in December 2018. \n\n### Targeting the CB2 Receptor May Be the Key to Alleviating Rheumatoid Arthritis\n\nThe endocannabinoid system’s deep involvement in the body’s immune response has led researchers to speculate that this system can be targeted to alleviate rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. \n\nThere’s specific interest in the CB2 receptor, which is abundant in immune cells. Activating the CB2 receptor may relieve rheumatoid arthritis symptoms by controlling the body’s inflammatory response. Targeting these receptors may have widespread applications for other diseases, including [osteoarthritis](http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0080440), [endometriosis](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/how-cbd-can-help-relieve-endometriosis-pain) and [Parkinson’s disease](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/how-parkinsons-disease-affects-the-endocannabinoid-system).\n\nA 2014 study found that [humans with rheumatoid arthritis had a higher prevalence of CB2 receptors in their joint tissues than those with osteoarthritis](https://bmcmusculoskeletdisord.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1471-2474-15-275). Researchers also showed that activating this receptor leads to less joint inflammation and bone deterioration in mice models of this disease. \n\nThere’s a good chance cannabis’s components can target CB2, though more research is needed. THC sometimes binds to this receptor, though it often doesn’t. We still aren’t clear on how CBD influences CB2, but we know that the terpene [beta-caryophyllene](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/know-your-terpenes-beta-caryophyllene), which is found in cannabis and other plants, can activate this receptor. \n\n### Clinical Trial Shows Promising Results in Relieving Rheumatoid Arthritis Pain & Stiffness\n\nTo date, only one clinical trial has been conducted on the effects of cannabis-based medicines in rheumatoid arthritis. In this double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study funded by GW Pharmaceuticals, patients were given an oral spray of THC and CBD in a 1:1 ratio for five weeks. \n\nUltimately, the researchers found [significant pain reduction and improvement of other rheumatoid arthritis symptoms](https://academic.oup.com/rheumatology/article/45/1/50/1788693) like morning stiffness, in patients using the cannabis-based medicine. The researchers called their results “encouraging” and emphasized the need for more studies of this nature. \n\nAs the U.S. population ages, incidences of arthritis—especially osteoarthritis—will rise. Current methods of managing arthritis have their shortcomings and in many cases only provide minimal relief. Cannabis’s ability to affect the endocannabinoid system and promising results in both clinical and preclinical research means that cannabis-based medicines to treat arthritis will likely be in our future. \n\nPhoto credit: [Kristina Tripkovic](https://unsplash.com/@tinamosquito)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Marijuana May Help","slug":"experiencing-hair-loss-marijuana-may-help","content":"It’s becoming increasingly common to see breakthrough research or anecdotal stories in the media about cannabis helping with cancer symptoms, epilepsy, PTSD and more. But some potential cannabis benefits fly below the radar, including the idea that cannabis may help fight hair loss. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nHair loss is incredibly common and can become a reality due to a whole laundry list of causes. Some of these causes, like male-pattern baldness, are completely natural and simply due to age or genetics. Others can result from health issues or as a byproduct of medical treatments. Health conditions that cause or are associated with hair loss include, but aren’t limited to: \n\n* Menopause\n* Chronic stress\n* Alopecia\n* Hypothyroidism\n* Hyperthyroidism\n* Malnutrition\n* Chemotherapy\n\n### The Science Behind Hair Loss\n\nDihydrotestosterone (DHT) is an androgen, or male sex hormone, that’s found in both men and women. This form of testosterone is mostly produced in adrenal glands, the male prostate and testes, and hair follicles. DHT influences things like libido and hair growth. \n\nHair growth happens in three stages:\n\n* **Anagen:** The anagen phase is the first stage of hair growth. It can last anywhere between two to six years. For the average person, the vast majority of their hair grows in the anagen phase. \n* **Catagen:** This second phase typically lasts about 10 days to two weeks, and is when the hair follicle goes through a process of repair. \n* **Telogen:** The third and final stage is called the telogen phase. This is when the hair follicle rests; it lies completely dormant for one to four months. \n\nOnce the cycle is complete, hair starts another cycle and begins to grow again. \n\nWhen DHT levels increase beyond normal levels, it can reduce hair growth in both men and women. Researchers think that [DHT causes hair follicles to shrink](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4174066/) by inflaming the follicle, slowing down the anagen phase and increasing the length of the telogen phase. Most of the common, over-the-counter types of hair-loss treatments seek to reduce DHT levels to stop or reverse hair loss. \n\n### Can Cannabis Help Halt Hair Loss?\n\nThe short answer, as is so often the case with medical cannabis, is that more research must be done to definitively answer this question. The only real medical research looking into cannabis as a treatment for hair loss dates back to 1980.\n\n_Endocrinology_’s September 1980 issue included a study observing whether “marihuana inhibits dihydrotestosterone binding to the androgen receptor.” This is the first and possibly the only study conducted on the topic. Researchers observed that [DHT didn’t bind to hormone receptors in rodents](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6249575) treated with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabinol (CBN).\n\nBecause lowering the amount and effectiveness of DHT is a major part of traditional hair-loss treatments, this study points to the potential for cannabis to halt hair loss. Unfortunately, there haven’t been any follow-up studies since. \n\nThere’s other cannabis-related research that could indirectly prove that the plant might successfully treat hair loss. It’s been found that scalp and hair follicle inflammation and irritation can also lead to hair loss. Cannabis can be [incredibly effective at battling inflammation](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55a3f31338323000062f0000/medical-marijuana-as-an-aid-against-inflammation) in humans by activating CB2 receptors.\n\nChronic stress is another major contributor to hair loss. And [marijuana can alleviate stress](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55a41e233832300006640000/cannabis-can-relieve-stress) by activating CB1 receptors throughout the nervous system, which in turn can calm and dull heightened stress. \n\n### A Holistic Approach to Combating Hair Loss\n\n#### High-CBD Cannabis Strains Reduce Inflammation\n\nCannabidiol (CBD) is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. For those suffering from male-pattern baldness, alopecia and other conditions resulting in hair loss due to inflammation of the hair follicle, CBD could help. Consider high-CBD cannabis strains like [Harlequin]( https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a9d9ad8fdb6dd00088d0cf1/harlequin) and [Cannatonic](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7ce5dcd520d60009f4f4bd/cannatonic), both of which could be good choices for fighting hair loss. \n\nRELATED: [MEDICAL MARIJUANA AS AN AID AGAINST INFLAMMATION](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55a3f31338323000062f0000/medical-marijuana-as-an-aid-against-inflammation)\n\n#### Jojoba Oil Moisturizes Hair Follicles\n\nBecause it’s high in vitamins C, B and E , jojoba oil has become a popular additive in hair and beauty products. It’s a versatile extract that’s also rich in copper and zinc. Because jojoba moisturizes hair follicles, it’s thought to prevent the dryness and shrinking that’s so often a precursor to hair loss. \n\n#### Onion Juice May Speed Up Hair Growth\n\nA study published in the _Journal of Dermatology_ shows pretty convincing [evidence that onion juice can invigorate hair growth](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12126069). Two groups, one using tap water and the other using crude onion juice, treated their hair twice a day. After two weeks of using onion juice, participants in the study saw the regrowth of terminal coarse hairs. Following four weeks of treatment, 17 patients saw hair regrowth, and after six weeks of treatment, 20 of the 23 patients saw hair regrowth. \n\n#### Licorice Root Showed Hair Growth Results on Par With Pharmaceuticals\n\nAs with many holistic treatments, there isn’t a wide body of medical research to confirm that licorice root stops or slows down hair loss in humans. But [one study performed on rats did show some promising results](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/260281460_HAIR_GROWTH_STIMULATING_EFFECT_AND_PHYTOCHEMICAL_EVALUATION_OF_HYDRO-ALCOHOLIC_EXTRACT_OF_GLYCYRRHIZA_GLABRA). \n\nResearchers evaluated licorice extract as a treatment for alopecia in female rats, compared to the widely marketed hair loss drug minoxidil, known to most of us as Rogaine. The researchers concluded that the use of just 2% licorice hydro-alcoholic extract showed better hair-growth results than the application of minoxidil did. It’s thought that licorice root can be taken orally or used topically to achieve results. \n\n#### Peppermint Oil Spurred Hair Growth in Animal Trials\n\nBesides licorice root, peppermint oil is one of the more studied holistic treatments for hair loss. In one study, [researchers topically applied multiple potential hair loss solutions on mice](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4289931/). These included saline (the control group), jojoba oil, Minoxidil and peppermint oil. After four weeks, the researchers observed that of the four groups, the mice treated with peppermint oil saw the most “prominent hair growth effects.” \n\nHopefully, one day in the future we’ll have extensive research on whether cannabis can really help curb or reverse hair loss. Start With a Marijuana Topical","slug":"new-to-cannabis-start-with-a-marijuana-topical","content":"Although there are now myriad ways to consume cannabis, novice cannabis consumers often find topicals to be an easy introduction to the plant. Topicals are less intimidating than other forms of marijuana: They typically have no psychoactive effects while often proving to be highly effective for pain relief.\n\nWhat exactly is a marijuana-infused topical? It’s a cream, lotion, oil, salve or balm that’s applied to the skin to help with localized pain or inflammation—that is, a cannabis topical treats the specific area to which it was applied and doesn’t enter the bloodstream. You may be surprised to learn that cannabis has been used as a topical for thousands of years to combat lower back pain, arthritis, inflammation, certain skin conditions and more.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### How Do Cannabis Topicals Work?\n\nAt first, many people are dubious as to whether a cannabis-based topical will help provide relief. According to HelloMD’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Perry Solomon, “When a topical is applied to the skin, the cannabis is thought to interact with the CB2 receptors in the muscles or joints. This helps augment the endocannabinoid system, a series of cannabinoid receptors throughout the human body, which in turn may decrease inflammation and pain within that specific area.”\n\n### Do Cannabis Topicals Help Relieve Pain?\n\nDr. Kerklaan, D.C. has over 20 years of experience treating patients in the health and wellness space. Seeking a more natural pain solution to opioids and other pharmaceuticals, he developed a cannabis-based topical brand aptly named Dr. Kerklaan.\n\nWhen asked how topicals can alleviate discomfort and pain, Dr. Kerklaan says, “The most common pains we experience are neuromusculoskeletal in origin. This means pain from nerves, muscles and structures like our joints. Cannabinoids, including THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol), are fantastic at helping with these three components. Topicals act by blocking pain nerves, reducing muscle tension and reducing inflammation.”\n\nAlthough cannabis topicals can be very effective in relieving symptoms from various conditions, it’s also important to note that everyone is different in how their body reacts to cannabis. A topical that works for you may not work in the same way for your friend. Often, this means trying out a variety of cannabis-infused topicals before finding one that works best for you.\n\n“There’s some debate about how much of the topical actually becomes absorbed through the skin,” says Dr. Solomon. “However, there are many people including professional athletes, who swear by cannabis-infused topicals for sore joints and muscles.”\n\n### What Role Do THC & CBD Play in Cannabis Topicals?\n\nIt’s common to find a topical that contains only CBD, only THC or a ratio of the two. People often ask which is best for them, but both CBD and THC may offer different effects depending on the person and the condition affecting them. \n\nAccording to Dr. Kerklaan, “THC and CBD are the most common cannabinoids derived from the cannabis plant. In simple terms, THC can offer painkilling relief, and CBD can act as an excellent anti-inflammatory. There are many other therapeutic effects offered by these molecules, but when they’re used in combination in certain ratios, they can have a compounding or entourage effect.\n\n`embed: https://www.instagram.com/p/BhxlYzolx3w/` \n<br>\n“In our Natural Skin Cream, we’re looking for the anti-inflammatory effect from CBD, hence the higher ratio of CBD to THC,” he adds. “In our Natural Sleep Cream, we’re looking to ease muscle tension. This is achieved by increasing the THC ratio. Pain is commonly targeted by a 1:1 CBD to THC ratio.”\n\n### Will Cannabis-Infused Topicals Show Up in a Urine Test?\n\nMany people work in jobs where routine urine tests are given. Dr. Solomon says, “When only using a cannabis topical, there’s a minimal amount of absorption into the blood, if at all. As such, there’s little chance of the THC becoming detected in a urine screening test.”\n\nThat said, if you were to apply a topical and then place a plastic covering over it, so that none of the cannabis can evaporate, there’s a small chance that there will be enough absorbed into the blood to perhaps cause a positive urine screening for THC.\n\nIt’s important to note that if you apply a topical to your skin, and then rub your eyes or put a finger in your mouth with the hand you used to apply the topical, there’s a chance that THC can enter into the bloodstream. If this is something that concerns you, immediately wash your hands after applying a cannabis topical to the skin.\n\n### Do Transdermal Patches Work the Same Way as a Cannabis Topical Lotion Does?\n\nCannabis transdermal patches are medicated adhesive patches that are applied topically on a veiny area of the skin. However, unlike creams and lotions, transdermal patches deliver cannabis through all of the skin’s layers into the bloodstream. These patches release small amounts of cannabinoids into the blood over a longer period of time. The result is that medication from a transdermal patch gives both localized and non-localized relief. \n\nMany consumers report having good to great success using these topicals for various skin conditions, sore muscles, arthritic joints or an aching back. So, if you’re looking for localized relief and aren’t interested in feeling high, you may want to try out a marijuana-infused topical. It just might give you the relief you need.\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. While Dani used to enjoy an active lifestyle, a car accident at age 19 triggered such severe fibromyalgia that she had to start walking with a cane, getting regular steroid shots and popping a variety of painkillers to help manage the pain. Rattling off a long list of medications she was taking, such as Norco and Percocet, Dani says, “I literally was a walking pharmacy.”\n\nThen Dani started working at the Oakland-based cannabis dispensary Harborside and quickly found that cannabis might be a better option. Still, she says it wasn’t until she started dabbing cannabis extracts that she was able to fully rely on this medicine. “I noticed that I needed a higher amount of THC, and flowers just wasn't doing it for me,” she says.\n\nDabbing offered the high doses of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) she needed. (Because Dani also suffered from stomach problems, edibles were off the table.) “Concentrates really were a cleaner option for me and a way for me to really get the cannabinoid profiles that I really need,\" explains Dani. “I want to educate people and change the stigma about concentrates, because concentrates really saved my life. I got off of all of the pain medications, all the medications in general. I'm steroid-injection free for about eight years now.” \n\nDani now spends her time educating cannabis patients about the benefits of medicinal dabbing. Having replaced all of her addictive medications with cannabis, Dani no longer walks with a cane. \n\n### From Doubter to Believer, Megan Says Cannabis Is the Solution \n\nMegan, a 43-year-old patient with a rare autoimmune vasculitis illness, says that cannabis has also helped with bringing down the inflammation she experiences due to her condition. Only 20,000 people in the U.S. have what Megan has. As such, there’s very little research dedicated to understanding the disease, and no well-researched treatments are available.\n\n“I ended up relying on a large number of narcotics and controlled substances to manage my symptoms,\" says Megan. “I have a really high tolerance, and I had to use large amounts of medications in order to achieve any sort of relief from my symptoms. Over time, that led to definitively physical dependence upon multiple substances.”\n\nMegan decided she needed to make a change. “Cannabis was pretty much the only treatment option that I hadn't really looked into,” she says, explaining that once she started consuming cannabis, two things happened: “Over a period of months, I lost a bunch of weight and also was able to start knocking out some of the controlled substances that I was taking.”\n\nMegan says it’s been a journey. “I was resistant to the concept that cannabis could actually be the solution, not part of the solution, but _the_ solution,” she says. “I honestly would not have believed that cannabis could really replace a medicine cabinet full of narcotics.”\n\nNow, however, Megan’s a believer and uses cannabis in lieu of her prescription medications. “I was blown away by how effective it was,” she says.\n\n### Treating Inflammation With Cannabis \n\nThe science on cannabis as an anti-inflammatory is sound. Our body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) can naturally reduce inflammation, but doesn’t always do so. Cannabinoids, when taken, can activate the ECS, triggering anti-inflammatory effects. \n\nIf you suffer from an inflammation-related condition and think cannabis might be right for you, the best first step is to talk to a doctor. You can [consult with one of HelloMD’s knowledgeable doctors](https://www.hellomd.com/); it's easy, private and 100% online. \n\nWhether you have a medical marijuana card or live in a state where you can purchase through recreational means, there are many cannabis options on the market today. Cannabis can help inflammation in many forms, so in some ways, this is about finding the best options for you. Whatever you try, remember that cannabis can affect people differently, so you might need to try a few options before you find the right one for you. \n\nIn the next installment of the Cannabis for Newbies guide, we’ll discuss using marijuana to help with painful muscle spasms.\n\nPhoto credit: [Mark](https://www.flickr.com/photos/eggrole/)","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,/9j/2wBDABALDA4MChAODQ4SERATGCgaGBYWGDEjJR0oOjM9PDkzODdASFxOQERXRTc4UG1RV19iZ2hnPk1xeXBkeFxlZ2P/2wBDARESEhgVGC8aGi9jQjhCY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2P/wgARCAAPABQDASIAAhEBAxEB/8QAFgABAQEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMC/8QAFgEBAQEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAQID/9oADAMBAAIQAxAAAAGTUspJk//EABsQAAIBBQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABAhESITFB/9oACAEBAAEFAukk66irDDP/xAAUEQEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAQ/9oACAEDAQE/AT//xAAUEQEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAQ/9oACAECAQE/AT//xAAbEAACAQUAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMQECEBEhkf/aAAgBAQAGPwLQxyZmyq6f/8QAGxABAAIDAQEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAQAhETFRQXH/2gAIAQEAAT8hvDxDdBFjKD8IOZkzyLZ0XHYgvI//2gAMAwEAAgADAAAAEPA//8QAFBEBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEP/aAAgBAwEBPxA//8QAFhEBAQEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAER/9oACAECAQE/EIx//8QAHBABAQACAgMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAREAITGxYXHB/9oACAEBAAE/EK3NellT3g2VVuzWUpE4p1kFCoKw8GBhIMLVuh+ZRMHGvsz/2Q==","aspectRatio":1.3605442176870748,"src":"/static/7e17a465f632d8285fbc3e7680e8e41e/14b42/948d7eaeeeaff7a82b6ce3df1d6b1f88.jpg","srcSet":"/static/7e17a465f632d8285fbc3e7680e8e41e/f836f/948d7eaeeeaff7a82b6ce3df1d6b1f88.jpg 200w,\n/static/7e17a465f632d8285fbc3e7680e8e41e/2244e/948d7eaeeeaff7a82b6ce3df1d6b1f88.jpg 400w,\n/static/7e17a465f632d8285fbc3e7680e8e41e/14b42/948d7eaeeeaff7a82b6ce3df1d6b1f88.jpg 800w,\n/static/7e17a465f632d8285fbc3e7680e8e41e/199c1/948d7eaeeeaff7a82b6ce3df1d6b1f88.jpg 938w","srcWebp":"/static/7e17a465f632d8285fbc3e7680e8e41e/58556/948d7eaeeeaff7a82b6ce3df1d6b1f88.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/7e17a465f632d8285fbc3e7680e8e41e/61e93/948d7eaeeeaff7a82b6ce3df1d6b1f88.webp 200w,\n/static/7e17a465f632d8285fbc3e7680e8e41e/1f5c5/948d7eaeeeaff7a82b6ce3df1d6b1f88.webp 400w,\n/static/7e17a465f632d8285fbc3e7680e8e41e/58556/948d7eaeeeaff7a82b6ce3df1d6b1f88.webp 800w,\n/static/7e17a465f632d8285fbc3e7680e8e41e/4092a/948d7eaeeeaff7a82b6ce3df1d6b1f88.webp 938w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2648-markdown","title":"How Cannabis Can Help Ease Arthritis Pain & Inflammation","slug":"how-cannabis-can-help-ease-arthritis-pain-and-inflammation","content":"Characterized by pain and inflammation in the joints, [arthritis affects one in four adults over the age of 18, and one in every 250 children](http://www.arthritis.org/about-arthritis/understanding-arthritis/arthritis-statistics-facts.php). The 34-year-old was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis as a child—at around age eight or nine—when fevers, pain and inflammation began interfering with his life. After suffering through a painful childhood, Chris decided to try cannabis as an adult.\n\n\"I had friends suggesting I try cannabis for medical purposes,” Chris says. “I decided to go ahead and give it a try. And then, lo and behold, it started helping a lot with inflammation and whenever I would have soreness or stiffness.” \n\nChris says he’s been able to reduce his pain with the use of cannabis, and while not completely gone, the plant has helped him function in spite of his pain. Chris says he prefers this option to pharmaceuticals. “Cannabis never numbs you completely, as opposed to using opiates and stuff like that which completely numbs you,” he explains.\n\nAccording to Chris, topicals and smoked cannabis have been most helpful. He’s also found that strain selection is key. “I've noticed different strains help with different symptoms [better] than others do,” he says. “So that's also something I'm exploring.”\n\nChris has been using cannabis daily for the past five years now. His opinion on cannabis for arthritis? “It helps, quite significantly,” he says.\n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS SOOTHES ARTHRITIS PAIN](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5822789665e8fd000cc74ebc/cannabis-soothes-arthritis-pain)\n\n### Cannabis Relieves Pain & May Reverse Damage Caused by Arthritis \n\nChris joins a growing number of folks who are finding cannabis can help them. When it comes to arthritis, chronic pain is the main symptom that patients seek to address; it’s also the most common reason people use cannabis.\n\nIn fact, in a recent study conducted by UC Berkeley and HelloMD, [81% of patients reported that cannabis alone was more effective at relieving their pain than using opioids was](http://online.liebertpub.com/doi/full/10.1089/can.2017.0012). Meanwhile, almost all survey respondents (97%) reported that they were able to lower their dose of opioids by introducing cannabis into their pain-management regimen. Similar results were reported for patients using non-opioid painkillers as well. \n\nIn addition, cannabis can help with inflammation, which is often at the root of arthritis. Scientists have begun to study the anti-inflammatory effects of cannabis and hope to use it specifically on rheumatoid arthritis.\n\nIt turns out that our body’s natural endocannabinoid system (ECS) has a lot to do with moderating our immune system and inflammation levels. Since certain cannabinoids are able to activate the ECS, scientists believe cannabis’s phytocannabinoids may be able to reduce inflammation while actually beginning to reverse the damage caused by it. One Canadian study that’s currently underway is looking at this mechanism to [see if cannabis therapies can actually aid in the repair and reduction of pain caused by arthritis](http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/dalhousie-researcher-investigates-use-of-marijuana-for-arthritis-pain-1.3142592).\n\nRELATED: [3 POPULAR QUESTIONS ABOUT MARIJUANA & ARTHRITIS ANSWERED](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a720780f24d1300077ccb25/3-popular-questions-about-marijuana-and-arthritis-answered)\n\n### Treating Arthritis With Cannabis \n\nIf you suffer from arthritis and think cannabis might be right for you, the best first step is to talk to a doctor. Marijuana-infused topicals, for example, can be applied directly to the affected area without any psychoactive effects. Some folks prefer cannabis edibles for their long-lasting, full-body pain relief, while others choose to smoke and vape for its quick-acting effects.\n\nWhatever you try, remember that cannabis can affect people differently, so you may need to try a few options before you find the right one for you. \n\nIn the next installment of the Cannabis for Newbies guide, we'll get into how cannabis works as a powerful anti-inflammatory.\n\nPhoto credit: [Felipe P. In this article, we take a look at how cannabis can be applied topically. This often underrated method of using cannabis is quite powerful at easing pain, tension and inflammation. Cannabis-infused topicals have helped patients with a variety of issues from relieving skin conditions to arthritis and muscle pain.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### What Are Cannabis-Infused Topicals?\n\nCannabis-infused topicals come in a wide variety of forms, including oils, creams, lotions, balms, mud masks and more—all infused with potent cannabinoids. These topical options are designed to be applied directly to the skin, treating the specific area where it was administered. Because topicals don’t enter the bloodstream the way smoking, vaping or eating cannabis do, they don’t typically have any psychoactive effects.\n\nThat said, I did meet one patient who was so incredibly sensitive to cannabis that she reported feeling high after using a large amount of marijuana-infused topical all over her body. For the vast majority of patients, the effects of topicals don’t cause any change to your overall state—just relief in the area where you used it. \n\nAs a precaution, however, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after applying the marijuana-infused topical. Exposure to your mouth or eyes—by rubbing them with your cannabis-laden hands—could lead to [accidental ingestion and an unwanted high](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/574b679b982db9000a000055/do-cannabis-topicals-pass-the-drug-test).\n\nRELATED: [THC IN CANNABIS TOPICALS: WHY IT MATTERS](https://hellomd.com/articles/thc-in-cannabis-topicals-why-it-matters)\n\n### Why Do Patients Use Marijuana-Infused Topicals?\n\nPatients use topicals for a variety of reasons. If you’re sensitive to the effects of medical marijuana and find that you’re unable to function as well after ingesting it, topicals can make a great alternative to all of the other methods of administration.\n\nThe fact that [cannabis-infused topicals don’t affect you systemically also means that they don’t show up on drug tests](https://hellomd.com/articles/do-cannabis-topicals-pass-the-drug-test). So for patients in careers or other contexts where marijuana drug testing is prevalent, topicals are often the only viable method of using this powerful medicine. \n\nMany patients use topicals for everyday aches and pains such as sore, tense or injured muscles. Powerful cannabinoids seep into the skin, helping ease tension while providing localized pain relief.\n\nThe plant’s anti-inflammatory effects also help reduce pain and inflammation at the site of any sprained, pulled or injured muscle. Much like regular application of ice helps speed up healing by reducing inflammation, cannabis-infused topicals also bring down inflammation, helping speed the recovery process.\n\n[Another popular use for marijuana-infused topicals is to apply it to arthritic joints](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-soothes-arthritis-pain). Arthritis can make everyday tasks very painful and sometimes even impossible. Thankfully, cannabis-infused topicals can help arthritis sufferers by providing direct pain relief to the areas where they need it most.\n\nIn addition, topicals may actually help reduce or even reverse arthritis. A Canadian study, currently underway, is looking at [how cannabis’s anti-inflammatory powers may be able to actually heal the damage caused by arthritis](http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/dalhousie-researcher-investigates-use-of-marijuana-for-arthritis-pain-1.3142592), reversing the condition itself, rather than just offering relief from its symptoms. Scientists working on the study believe that by saturating the CB2 receptors in the affected arthritic area, joints may actually be repaired.\n\nArthritis patients who use cannabis-infused topicals regularly often report finding mild pain relief at first, but with regular use, their overall pain gradually reduces over time. If you suffer from arthritis, marijuana-infused topicals may be a great option to try out. \n\nPatients also use [cannabis-infused topicals for a variety of skin conditions](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/the-3-most-common-skin-conditions-can-cannabis-help). Cannabis is chock full of powerful anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal and pain-relieving properties. This potent mix makes cannabis-infused topicals incredibly helpful in treating a wide range of skin maladies such as eczema, psoriasis, acne and rosacea. With regular application of cannabis-infused topicals, many patients report that these conditions begin to subside. \n\n### How to Use Cannabis-Infused Topicals\n\nThe basics of using marijuana-infused topicals are simple. Apply the topical to your skin, at the site of your pain or irritation. This usually involves rubbing the topical in until it has been absorbed into your skin. Of course, usage can vary by product, so always be sure to read the instructions.\n\nYou should feel some pain-relieving effects within minutes of applying the topical, but may also find that regular application increases these effects and gradually improves the underlying condition. To get started with cannabis-infused topicals, or [learn how to make your own topical](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/diy-recipe-marijuana-infused-topical-for-pain-relief). \n\nWhen it comes to marijuana-infused topicals, the options are plentiful. Before you hone in on a particular topical, find out what types of oils were used to make the topical along with what other scents or ingredients were added. Think about what works for you. Is there a non-cannabis moisturizer or balm that you already use and like? You may be able to find something similar but infused with cannabis.\n\nFor example, I have sensitive skin and am allergic to many scents so I only use topicals that are made with non-pore-clogging oils like mango or shea butter, and I avoid any topical products that have added scents. Still, others may like something heavier like coconut oil, for higher levels of moisture. Meanwhile, many prefer scents in their cannabis-infused topical to mask any skunky odor. Thinking about your preferences ahead of time can help you ensure the product you’re purchasing will be something you can use. \n\nIn the next installment of the Cannabis for Newbies guide, we’ll move from talking about the many ways of using cannabis to going over the many different types of cannabis. There are so many strains—aka genetic varieties—of cannabis that it can be hard to know which one to try. We’ll give you the basics you need to know to understand what strains are and how to find the right one for you. \n\nPhoto credit: [Jesper Aggergaard](https://unsplash.com/@aggergakker)\n\nNeed a medical marijuana recommendation? Like many people, I often set goals to reach a certain level of fitness and attempt to cut back on sugar or some other fat-inducing food product. Year to year though, there is one resolution that follows me, and that is to be happier and more mentally present in the moment than I have been during the previous year. \r\n\r\nEveryone experiences hardship in their daily life and stress and depression can suddenly begin to weigh on you. As much work as I do to create a healthier mental state, there is always room for improvement. Learning from experience, I now go easier on myself when I make mistakes and I respect my intuition when I think I need to take a day off for my own mental and emotional health. I've also realized that part of creating my happy place comes from a healthy dose of exercise and sound nutrition. These are tools in my toolkit, but there's also one more.\r\n\r\n### My Cannabis Resolution\r\n\r\nI'm going to say it out loud and stay proud, cannabis helps me improve my own mental health and well being. For this reason, I plan to continue to incorporate cannabis into my daily routine during coming year. Cannabis is praised for its ability to relieve pain and tension, but it can also help ease stress and anxiety that is part of everyday life.\r\n\r\nCannabis’s mental health benefits do not stop with anxiety, however. Marijuana has been found to lead to an overall more positive mood. A 2012 study, which was published in the journal _European Neuropsychopharmacology_, found that when the endocannabinoid system is crucial in emotional processing. Essentially, when THC is administered they responded less to negative stimuli compared to people who received a placebo. \r\n\r\n### Improving Mood & Outlook\r\n\r\nWhen people are more responsive to negative stimuli, they are more likely to have mental illnesses like depression, which cannabis can help to combat. Stimulating the the endocannabinoid system through THC consumption can help improve the mood through leading people to have more positive associations compared to negative associations. This study not only found that cannabis can help improve a persons mood, but it also found how deeply the endocannabinoid system is tied into emotional function. \r\n\r\nRELATED: [WHY DOES CANNABIS MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/why-does-cannabis-make-you-feel-good)\r\n\r\nThe mental health benefits of cannabis do not stop with its most prevalent cannabinoid THC, but extend to the more than 80 different cannabinoids that are found in different plant strains. Non-psychoactive cannabinoids like CBD and THCA are gaining traction as elements in cannabis that can help improve your overall health. If there is one general health concept that everyone knows to be true, it is that inflammation is bad for you. Tumeric gained traction this year as a superfood that reduces inflammation, but CBD and THC-A both have similar anti-inflammatory properties. I don’t know about you, but when I don’t feel inflammation I tend to feel great!\r\n\r\n### Incorporating CBD & THCA\r\n\r\nPart of my New Year’s resolution to bettering my health involves consuming THCA and CBD that both will help improve my overall health. Reducing inflammation in my body through consuming these two cannabinoids also helps improve my mental well being and improve my happiness. CBD also helps relieve anxiety and causes calming feelings without being psychoactive. \r\n\r\nGetting the full benefits from cannabis involves embracing the whole plant, not just the components that are the most well known. Cannabis is also full of terpenes alongside its cannabinoids that help provide even more benefits. Terpenes may give cannabis different strains their signature smells, but they also provide effects like alertness, relaxation, mood elevation, and stress relief. Terpenes like limonene and linalool are particularly helpful at relieving stress and promoting relaxation. \r\n\r\n### Let’s Allow Ourselves to Feel Good!\r\n\r\nLet's be honest, cannabis just makes you feel good in general. Whether you're affected by stress or depression, cannabis can just take the edge off when you are having a hard day. Cannabis helps decrease the production of FAAH, fatty acid amide hydrolase, which breaks down anandamide in the body. Anandamide is a endocannabinoid that our body naturally produces that leads to euphoric effects. THC activates the same receptors in the body that anandamide does, naturally stimulating happy and joyous effects. \r\n\r\nCannabis is a great component to add to your New Year’s resolution on health, whatever it may be. To me, one of the most amazing benefits of cannabis is its ability to help me move away from pharmaceutical medications.
