Since 2014, when the [Compassionate Care Act](https://www.mpp.org/states/new-york/new-yorks-compassionate-care-act-an-overview-of-a-6357-e-and-s-7923/) passed, which allows for the sale of legal, medical marijuana, many forms of cannabis were allowed, but not whole flower. Instead, patients have been offered other methods of consumption, including the option of purchasing up to three ounces of ground flower.\n\n![Regulation and laws allow for legal access to medical marijuana](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_25_at_6_42_28_PM_006992b86c.png)\n\nKevin Harbison is a doctor of pharmacy and manages clinical services for [PharmaCann](https://www.pharmacann.com/), the company that runs Verilife dispensaries. In his opinion, whole flower offers patients better access to the plant's medicinal properties. He says, \n\n\"When flower is processed down through grinding, components are lost that do not make it into the final package. Now the flower is left completely intact.\" He followed by saying that many of the terpenes and cannabinoids are lost when the whole flower is processed.\n\n### Ban on Smoking Flower in New York\n\n![Indica strains are better for a good night's sleep.](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_12_26_at_7_14_23_PM_2f2ea5bcfb.png)\n\nWhile medical use of cannabis started several years ago, there was a hard ban when it came to smoking flower. Former Governor Andrew Cuomo was vehemently against the sale of whole cannabis flower, and before signing the Compassionate Care Act, he demanded the elimination of whole flower.\n\nThis past March, the [Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act](https://cannabis.ny.gov/laws-regulations) legalized adult-use of cannabis. It was at this time, the ban on whole flower was revisited. Senator Diane Savino, an advocate for medicinal cannabis, always knew that the ban on whole flower would be overturned, especially when adult-use came into play. She says,\n\n![Screen Shot 2022-01-26 at 10.51.03 PM.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_26_at_10_51_03_PM_85e8c0e8a2.png)\n\n\"We knew restricting access to whole flower was going to drive up the cost of the product, because it costs more money to process it into non-smokable forms, and for a lot of patients, the fastest delivery method to really obtain relief is through smoking.\"\n\nThe guidelines for medical cannabis flower were issued by the Office of Cannabis Management (OCM). \n\n### Happy to be Smoking Whole Cannabis Flower in New York\n\n![Screen Shot 2021-10-28 at 9.00.17 AM.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_10_28_at_9_00_17_AM_9798336209.png)\nInside the Verilife dispensary in the Bronx, NY\n\nWaiting outside [Verilife dispensary in the Bronx](https://www.verilife.com/ny/location/bronx?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=bronx_gmb_location), Brian Smith says he has been waiting patiently for the last few years for whole cannabis flower to be available for sale in New York. Cannabis has helped Brian with his chronic pain, which started a few years ago after a motorcycle accident.\n\n\"After my accident, I was using opioids a lot to help me with the pain I was having throughout the day and night. It was pretty obvious that I was becoming addicted, so I tried marijuana, which really helped me. I was able to get off the pills and deal with my pain. I take edibles, and I've been purchasing ground flower, but it's not the same as whole flower.\"\n\n![Verilife dispensary in NYC](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_26_at_9_21_57_AM_37b21d7743.png)\n\nAnother patient, Jane Wright, came to the Verilife dispensary in the Bronx specifically to buy whole flower marijuana. She said she was excited to try Pineapple Silver Haze, a Sativa strain by Matter.\n\n\"I've been waiting for whole buds to be available in dispensaries. It's unfortunate that medical patients have been denied access to bud as it's such an effective way to consume the medicine. When I heard that I could buy whole flower this week, I called Verilife to find out what strains were going to be available.\"\n\n### Verilife Dispensary Sells Whole Cannabis Flower in New York\n\n![Growing your own marijuana can equate to big cash savings](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_26_at_12_53_35_PM_f1b0b19dc5.png)\n\nVerilife, a premier dispensary chain that has [multiple locations throughout New York state](https://www.verilife.com/ny/locations), now offers medical patients the opportunity to buy whole flower through their Matter brand. Brett Novey, CEO of PharmaCann, the company which operates Verilife says, \"We commend Governor Hochul, her administration, and the Office of Cannabis Management for their commitment to expanding product offerings to New York Medical patients.\"\n\nVerilife prides itself on growing and selling premium flower through its brand Matter. It’s one thing to occasionally avoid interactions with others. However, an intense, persistent fear of being judged by others is known as [social anxiety disorder](https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/publications/social-anxiety-disorder-more-than-just-shyness/index.shtml). \n\nIn the United States, [15 million adults suffer from this type of anxiety](https://adaa.org/about-adaa/press-room/facts-statistics). And yet less than 37% of those suffering seek out treatment. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nAlthough social anxiety is treatable, many doctors rely on [medications like Zoloft and Prozac to treat their patients](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/176891.php). That said, it can take up to three months on these drugs before seeing any improvement. And these medications can come with scary side effects like:\n\n* Insomnia\n* Lethargy\n* Diarrhea\n* Dizziness\n* Tremors\n\n### The Science Behind Why Marijuana Can Ease Anxiety\n\nMeanwhile, in a survey of data from Strainprint, an app for cannabis consumers to track strains, doses and symptoms, there was [a perceived 58% reduction in anxiety and stress following cannabis use](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0165032718303100?via%3Dihub). For these consumers, even two puffs of cannabis were sufficient in reducing ratings of depression and anxiety. \n\nWe asked HelloMD physician Dr. Richard Kim how cannabis works to reduce social anxiety.\n\n“Cannabis promotes sociability by making us feel happy and relaxed. THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) promotes happiness primarily by binding to the CB1 receptor in the brain, which responds by releasing the neurotransmitter dopamine. The increased dopamine signals the pleasure center of the brain: the mesolimbic pathway.”\n\nDr. Kim also noted that cannabidiol (CBD) can also help with anxiety, saying “CBD (cannabidiol) can increase serotonin signaling at the 5-HT1A receptor—the same neurotransmitter and receptor that SSRIs like Prozac influence.”\n\nDr. Kim cautions, however, that too much THC can actually have the opposite effect. “Too much THC can increase anxiety, because THC binds the CB1 receptor in three areas of the brain which affect anxiety: the amygdala, prefrontal cortex and the hippocampus—each with their own dose-response relationship to THC.”\n\nWhen it comes to cannabis, everyone responds differently. While some people can consume cannabis without anxiety, some people can unintentionally experience marijuana-induced anxiety. It really comes down to a bit of trial and error to see what cannabis strain works for you.\n\nThat said, we asked some HelloMD staff members, which marijuana strains help them feel more at ease in social settings. \n \n### 1. ACDC \n\n**Chris B., partner development associate**, prefers the light effects of ACDC: “My favorite strain to alleviate social anxiety is ACDC, a classic high-CBD strain, because it has a nice calming effect. ACDC offers full-body relaxation without getting too heady or increasing paranoia, which can worsen your anxiety. I find ACDC to be a good strain for light effects, so I can use it without overconsuming. Then I don’t worry about being too elevated in public. \n\n“When I’m at a large gathering, I sometimes feel overwhelmed by the quantity of people, especially if I’m in a crowd of new people that I’m not quite as comfortable with. Any time that feeling kicks in, ACDC can bring me back to that relaxed feeling without the cloudiness that accompanies certain high-THC strains. I’m still very clear-minded, and I can socialize easily.”\n\n### 2. Jack Herer \n\n** Melissa N., office manager**, tells us why Jack Herer is her go-to marijuana strain when she’s feeling anxious at a party: “To reduce social anxiety, I enjoy sativa-dominant Jack Herer. Sativa strains are generally uplifting, but some of them are heavy-headed. Jack Herer is more of a clear-headed high. It makes me feel less paranoid, and that makes it easier for me to be social. \n\n“It’s a great strain for any time you’re feeling anxious. I like it if I’m going to a party or even in the morning. If I’m too tired, it's a good option to wake up and get the day started, because it provides good energy. \n\n“I’d recommend Jack Herer especially for people who are new to cannabis, because it’s an uplifting sativa. It doesn’t have that sluggish feeling like some strains do. For me, there’s less paranoia, so it’s great for newbies. But advanced consumers love it, too.”\n\n### 3. Skywalker OG \n\n**Ryan G., customer service manager**, says Skywalker OG is his pick for when he has to do any public speaking: “I really like Skywalker OG to help me with social anxiety. I tend to overthink a lot, so having a strain that provides full-body effects really helps me. \n\n“I can get really anxious when I'm speaking in front of large crowds or even just a small group of people. I feel I'm very socially awkward and that makes me very self-conscious, so having an indica-dominant strain like Skywalker OG helps quiet those thoughts, and it puts me at ease.\n\n“Cannabis affects everybody differently, so it’s a good idea to start low and slow, and increase consumption as needed. But I’d suggest Skywalker OG, because it's not a super heavy indica that will make me feel lazy. This strain gives me energy, but at the same time reduces my self-consciousness, which helps alleviate my anxiety.”\n\n### 4. Wedding Cake \n\n** Bart S., customer service specialist**, says Wedding Cake tastes great and helps him start conversations without feeling self-conscious: \n\n“Recently, I've been enjoying Wedding Cake, an indica-dominant strain also known as Pink Cookies. I think it's a very good strain for social situations because it makes me feel happy and relaxed. It's also energizing so it doesn't make me anxious, but it gives me the motivation to strike up a conversation. \n\n“Sometimes I feel anxious before social situations like a big party or an event with large amounts of people. Wedding Cake helps to relieve that anxiety so once I arrive I can be relaxed, talking and happy. \n\n“I would recommend Wedding Cake because it’s a great tasting strain, but it also helps me break the ice at a party or social gathering. It helps me start talking and go with the flow so I’m no longer worried about the situation that I’m in.”\n\n### 5. 24 Karat Gold \n\n** Kevin P., customer service specialist**, says 24 Karat Gold helps him be present in conversations with others: “My favorite strain to reduce social anxiety is called 24 Karat Gold, otherwise known as Kosher Tangie. It’s a cross between indica strain Kosher Kush and sativa strain Tangie. \n\n“Since 24 Karat Gold is a hybrid, it doesn't get me too in my head or too sleepy. Although technically a 60/40 indica-dominant hybrid, it calms me down physically, so I don't talk as much with my hands. I'm also not as nervous, and it frees my mind up for really interesting conversation.\n\n“It gives a really classic high feeling, where I feel like I could just sit around and talk to people for a really long time—that's a big part of being social for me. I find it's appropriate to consume anytime I'll be around other people. \n\n“With so many different strains of marijuana out there, I like the ones that alleviate my social anxiety, but also taste great. The nice thing about 24 Karat Gold is it has really sweet citrus notes from Tangie and a little bit of pineyness from the Kosher Kush, so it always tastes really fresh. It feels like it cleanses my insides, and that psyches me up to get socializing.”\n\n### 6. Sunset Sherbet \n\n**Nik S., customer service specialist**, goes for indica-dominant Sunset Sherbet for the taste and physical effects: “To reduce my social anxiety, I like to go with Sunset Sherbet. Not only for the taste and effect, but because of the genetics: Sunset Sherbet is an indica-dominant strain descended from GSC.\n\n“If I’m in crowded areas or any place I'm not familiar with, but I still want to remain social and have a good time, Sunset Sherbet works for me. With Sunset Sherbet, I notice the physical stress being relieved, and as a result it makes the social anxiety vanish. That iffy feeling and any feelings of anxiousness disappear. Or the flavor boost that spices like oregano and dill can lend to your favorite foods? If you do, thank pinene, the very common terpene that gives these and many other plants their distinctive fragrance. \n\nBut pinene also has potent healing properties—and that makes pinene-rich cannabis strains especially effective for treating a long list of health conditions such as asthma, arthritis and Crohn’s disease.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Terpenes, Cannabinoids & the Endocannabinoid System\n\nPinene is one of a very large group of terpenes, fragrant oils produced by the glands of many kinds of plants. Because of their strong smells, terpenes ward off predators—but these pungent oils also benefit the human body and brain. \n\nTerpenes are found in so many plants that are used for flavoring food that a number of them are considered food grade, or safe for consumption (though some terpenes are still considered toxic when consumed in large quantities). Terpenes can also be extracted and used alone as essential oils.\n\nPinene is abundant in the plant world, and cannabis is no exception. Research continues to reveal new information about the properties of the more than 200 terpenes found in the various strains of the _Cannabis sativa_ plant. And numerous studies have shown that the major terpenes have considerable healing properties. Those properties play out in synergy with the other terpenes and cannabinoids that give each strain its unique chemical profile. \n\nLike the more familiar cannabinoid compounds tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), terpenes interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), a vast network of receptors located throughout the body and brain. The ECS responds to both endocannabinoids produced by the body and to the nearly identical cannabinoids in cannabis. That explains why pinene, like the other major terpenes, can affect cells and tissues throughout the body.\n\n### Pinene’s Many Health Benefits\n\nPinene has two molecular forms: alpha-pinene and beta-pinene. The two are identical except for a single molecule; this accounts for their different features and actions. But both work in conjunction with the rest of a cannabis strain’s overall chemical profile to support health and ease the symptoms of a variety of conditions.\n\nIn nature, alpha-pinene is more prevalent than beta-pinene, and the same is true in cannabis. Alpha-pinene is responsible for the distinctive smell of pine needles and of some herbs, including rosemary. It also accounts for the smell of pine oil and turpentine, and it can also appear in citrus peel. Studies suggest that alpha-pinene might have more potent health benefits than beta-pinene does, but the beta form also plays an important role in protecting the body. \n\nBeta-pinene contributes to the fragrance of many cooking herbs including oregano, parsley and dill. In cannabis, it usually occurs in smaller amounts than the alpha version, but its connections to other terpenes create a synergistic effect. For example, beta-pinene appears to play a role in the production of another major terpene, myrcene, and some studies have shown that it can work with the terpene limonene) to fight viral infections.\n\n Several studies in recent years have revealed that pinene, particularly alpha-pinene, has a number of significant health benefits, including:\n\n* **Pain relief:** As an extracted oil and as part of a whole plant cannabis strain, pinene can affect the body’s pain receptors to reduce discomfort from conditions such as arthritis and fibromyalgia.\n\n* **Antioxidant properties:** Pinene can help to protect cells from excessive oxidation, which can break them down and make the body susceptible to a variety of diseases.\n\n* **Anti-inflammatory features:** Pinene can [reduce inflammation](https://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/np400828x), which can depress the immune system and stress cells and tissues.\n\n* **Anti-viral characteristics:** Some laboratory research reveals that [beta-pinene with limonene can be 100% effective in killing the common herpes simplex virus](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4393490/).\n\n* **Protection for the gastrointestinal system:** Pinene has been shown to [protect the lining of the stomach and other parts of the gastrointestinal system](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4329611/) against inflammation and lesions from conditions such as ulcers and Crohn’s disease.\n\n* **Neutralizing THC:** Pinene can inhibit the negative effects that come from consuming too much THC, such as short-term memory loss and feelings of fear and paranoia. That’s because it can cross the blood brain barrier and [directly affect the behavior of neurotransmitters in the brain](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27573669), including GABA, a chemical that modulates mood, and the brain’s receptors for benzodiazepine medications.\n\n* **Bronchodilation:** Pinene can ease congestion and constriction in the lungs and bronchial areas, making breathing easier for people with asthma and other pulmonary conditions.\n\n### Where to Find Pinene\n\nPinene is just one component of the many cannabinoids, terpenes and other substances that make up the whole cannabis plant. It works with all those elements to create an individual strain’s unique profile and boost the healing effects of all those other elements as well. \n\nBut some cannabis strains are high in pinene, and most of them are easily identifiable by their distinctively piney smell. Along with supporting the body’s healing mechanisms, the top pinene-rich cannabis strains can promote calm and focus, and balance the effects of too much THC. \n\n\nPinene is also available as a pure terpene extract that can be used in vaping and dabbing with other forms of cannabis, or to add to foods for flavoring. It’s also widely sold as an essential oil for aromatherapy. \n\nPinene in small amounts is considered safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, but it can have some toxic effects when it’s ingested or inhaled, particularly when used in various cleaning products such as turpentine. \n\nJust about everyone knows the scent of pinene, even if the name isn’t familiar. But pinene is more than just a nice scent—this abundant cannabis terpene has plenty of healing benefits for both the body and the brain.\n\nPhoto credit: [Jean Lakosnyk](https://unsplash.com/@lifelikeinspiration)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Putting on your favorite songs after consuming some marijuana can be an almost spiritual experience. Time seems to slow down, the music fully captures your attention and everything just sounds so good. \n\nI’ve had many positive experiences listening to music while enjoying cannabis, but my favorites have been when the music was live. Listening to live music can be a fun, relaxing and enjoyable way to spend free time with friends. But listening to live music after taking marijuana brings it to another level entirely. And there are actually some scientific explanations about why music seems so much richer after consuming cannabis.\n\nCurious about trying cannabis for your next live music experience? We’ve got a few recommendations on what kind of marijuana to try before your favorite artist’s next performance. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Why Cannabis Makes Music So Enjoyable\n\nMarijuana consumers tend to report an increase in enjoyment with listening to music and playing it, too. But how does cannabis make music so entertaining? Scientists have explored this question, and they have a few ideas about what’s going on:\n\n* **Cannabis slows perception of time for musicians:** One of the major factors that researchers believe affects our enjoyment of music—especially for the musicians themselves—is how we perceive time. Interestingly, cannabis can actually speed up certain mental processes, leading to a relative slowing down of time. In one study, [cannabis consumers perceived a 15-second time interval as 16.7 seconds](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/BF00402390). Some believe this helps musicians improvise, because they have more subjective time to figure out their next moves. \n\n* **Marijuana increases focus and attention:** For those listening to music, time slowing down allows them to perceive more of the music with more focus and attention. “When your time perception changes, your focus of attention changes,” says Jorg Fachner, a researcher studying the phenomena. “You might have an enhanced ability to select certain information and disregard other information, which could help distinguish the individual sounds a bit more intensively.” \n\n>This can leave the music seeming more clear, clean and distinct than it would otherwise. And this may enhance enjoyment. Previous research showed that [marijuana could also cause noises to seem louder](https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/02791072.1978.10471870), an effect that may also increase our attention to music.\n\n>In Fachner’s research, he saw that the [areas of the brain that lit up in music-listening cannabis consumers were the same areas stimulated in gifted mathematicians solving complex math problems](https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1300/J175v02n02_02). Cannabis can help us to focus more on the intricacies and details of the music, while using less mental energy to do so. \n\nRELATED: [STAFF PICKS: 8 ALBUMS TO LISTEN TO WHEN YOU’RE TOO HIGH](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b58dc91a1805500087db9bd/staff-picks-8-albums-to-listen-to-when-youre-too-high)\n\n* **Cannabis keeps your mind in the moment:** Fachner also explains that those listening to music on cannabis tend to stay in the present moment. With marijuana, it can become temporarily challenging to integrate past, present and future memories. This tends to make it easier for those consuming the plant to stay firmly in the present moment, focused on enjoying those tunes. \n\n* **Much music has been made by marijuana consumers:** Some argue that cannabis makes music more enjoyable because [a lot of music has been made by cannabis consumers](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5888177429f44d000c1d76ff/why-does-music-sound-better-with-marijuana). Taking cannabis before listening can help people get into the mindset of the musicians, and so may help the listener have more of a connection with the music. \n\n### Cannabis for Concerts: What to Try\n\nWhatever kind of music you love, cannabis can make it even more enjoyable. And the pressure around your head and neck just won’t let up? You’re not alone. It’s estimated that as many as [1.4 billion folks in the U.S. experience this kind of pain](https://emedicine.medscape.com/article/792384-overview#showall), commonly known as a tension, or stress, headache.\n\nTension headaches can flare up at any time, typically when you’re exposed to stress, either physical or mental. Maybe you’ve pulled one too many all-nighters, your workload has doubled, or you just haven’t had enough to eat. All of these things can set off a tension headache as can anxiety, depression, and even poor posture or tight muscles in your head, neck and shoulders. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nAs it happens, [cannabis has been used to treat headaches](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5436334/) dating back as far as the second millennium BCE. It was an established headache remedy in the U.S. from 1839 until 1937, when the government made the plant illegal. During this time, distinguished doctors who touted cannabis’s effectiveness included Silas Weir Mitchell, then president of the NY Neurological Society, and William Gowers, considered a founding father of modern neurology.\n\nFast forward to today, and cannabis is still illegal at the federal level, making peer-reviewed, clinical studies on the plant’s efficacy extremely challenging. That said, a number of preliminary studies along with plenty of anecdotal evidence point to marijuana as a good option for relieving headaches—not to mention its various triggers.\n\nFollowing are our team’s go-to cannabis strains for easing the pain in their noggin.\n\n### 1. OG Kush\n\n![OG Kush cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-572c35a3-1df9-41f4-9069-005388241a02/original.jpg)\n\n**Dmitry B., marketing videographer/editor:** “My favorite cannabis strain to help with tension headaches is OG Kush because it comes on fast and is very cerebral. It contains high levels of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) for effective pain relief. So, the combination of potency, rapid onset and the cerebral high of OG Kush basically makes it possible for me to combat any headache.\n\n“OG Kush has a very distinct aroma and smell. OG Kush tastes really fruity, punchy. You can definitely taste the diesel in there.\n\n“When it comes to OG Kush, don't overdo it. I’d suggest consuming OG Kush at the end of the day. And don't overmedicate because it could have the reverse effect and make the headache flare up again. Instead, go low and slow. Take one to three puffs, depending on your tolerance level, and see how you feel.”\n\n### 2. Jack Herer\n\n![Jack Herer cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-91dbcca4-f11c-4dd3-914a-e0abaff4ec06/original.jpg)\n\n**Ryan G., customer service lead:** “I really enjoy Jack Herer, because it's very fast-acting and an effective pain reliever. This is one of the more reliable marijuana strains. It's not only uplifting and energetic, but because it's a sativa, it allows me to go about my day and do things that I need to get done. I don't feel couch-locked as I would if I took an indica.\n\n“When I smoke Jack Herer, it takes effect within 10 minutes. So, if you smoke it or use a flower vaporizer, I find that it tends to be more effective—stronger and heavier—than using an oil cartridge. \n\n“Jack Herer, which tastes and smells very piney with notes of citrus, is a cannabis strain that I’d recommend for all experience levels. Of course, if you're a novice user, you should go slow and take care, because certain Jack Herer strains are a little bit on the potent side.”\n\n### 3. Chemdawg\n\n![Chemdawg cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-613667ac-aa23-4db7-9421-b14acbb752d7/original.jpg)\n\n**Veronica B, customer service specialist:** “I’ve been very fortunate in that I don’t experience headaches very frequently. However, if the pain starts pounding in my head, I like to turn to an indica-dominant strain to alleviate the symptoms. Chemdawg is the perfect cannabis strain for me as it provides strong cerebral effects, but also a full body relaxation to distract me from my headache.\n\n“Chemdawg has a gasoline smell, with flavors that are earthy, woody, reminiscent of pine. This is a potent strain, so novice cannabis consumers should start with a small amount.\n\n“Upon consumption, you can expect to feel relaxed from head to toe. Depending on the patient, Chemdawg can be a great choice for day or night. In any case, the headaches will no longer be a nuisance.”\n\n### 4. Harlequin\n\n![Harlequin cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-1da9487e-143e-4339-8139-cec1ae8975bc/original.jpg)\n\n**Kevin P., customer service specialist:** “I tend to prefer CBD-rich (cannabidiol-rich) strains, specifically Harlequin when I'm experiencing headaches—and I’m a seasoned cannabis user, so I’m comfortable with THC.\n\n“Harlequin is unique for two different reasons. First, it's almost always at 5:2 or more commonly a 3:1 ratio, meaning three-parts CBD to one-part THC. It's also sativa dominant with that little bit of THC that's in there.\n\n“When I have a headache, I’m trying to relieve the pain and also that foggy feeling that I get with a headache. So, something like a 3:1 has just enough CBD to relieve the pain, with just enough THC to amplify that painkilling ability. But it’s also just enough THC to distract from the headache without leaving me stoned.\n\n“When I experience a headache, I don't burn Harlequin. Because the last thing I want to do is be coughing all of the time, since that amplifies the pain in my head. So, I use a Pax device. I'll grind up the flower and then vaporize it, so it's a lot smoother. It's a lot easier to medicate that way.\n\n“In terms of taste and smell, you definitely get some earthiness and sweetness with Harlequin. I want to say that there's a little bit of mango in it, but it really does depend on the batch.”\n\n### 5. Gelato\n\n![Gelato cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-1d984c1e-6a20-40ef-94fb-d43ce5e0a900/original.jpg)\n\n**Nik S., customer service specialist:** “My favorite marijuana strain to relieve tension headaches is Gelato because of the hybrid effect that it provides. Gelato provides good feelings; it's not such a heavy couch-locker, and it's going to also give you those euphoric feelings. \n\n“And it tastes like gelato. It takes very creamy depending on the phenotype. There's the #25, #33, #41, #45—those are the popular ones. And the 25, 33 and also the 45 are going to taste very creamy. The 41 is going to have that creamy taste as well, but also a little bit of like kind of a nutty taste as well. It's very flavorful.\n\n“When Gelato first takes effect, it brings on the feeling of an indica: You may feel kind of slow at first. But then, it starts to balance out with the sativa effects. It kills the pain. In terms of how much to consume, I think it just depends on the person and how great your pain is.\n\nThis cannabis strain isn’t for beginners. It’s definitely for the more experienced consumer. If a novice user wanted to try it, you may be able to find lighter versions of Gelato. There may be some indoor varieties that may not be grown to yield as much THC.”\n\n### 6. ACDC\n\n![ACDC cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-1b57c4c3-8a42-4cda-b862-717b76986055/original.jpg)\n\n**Bart S., customer service specialist:** “With tension headaches, I would do a high-CBD cannabis strain likeACDC. And I’d do that with an indica like Granddaddy Purple. Granddaddy Purple—really almost any indica strain—helps me when I have a migraine. I prefer Granddaddy Purple, because of the taste and flavor, which is like a piney berry. It puts me to sleep, and I’ll wake up without a migraine.\n\n“But for tension headaches, ACDC, which has a 3:1 ratio of CBD to THC, is a good choice. I’d dab it, because it’s a lot stronger; as a dab, it’s a more concentrated form of cannabis. When I have a tension headache, I want to take care of it quickly. I don’t really want to take the chance of smoking a bowl and having it not work. I want to attack the headache right away.”\n\nPhoto credits: [Anh Nguyen](https://unsplash.com/@pwign) (main image); [Nickel Bag of Funk](https://www.flickr.com/photos/nickel_bag_of_funk/) (OG Kush)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. The assumption that all cannabis consumers are lazy is one of them. While it’s not exactly known where the lazy stoner stereotype came from, we know now it certainly isn’t grounded in fact. \n\nActually, there’s a long list of anecdotal evidence and an increasing body of scientific research that shows cannabis can actually increase motivation rather than stifle it. Sure, some types of cannabis can make you relaxed and sleepy, but in a world of innovative new marijuana products, that certainly doesn’t always have to be the case. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nSome of the most influential thinkers and doers of recent history were, and sometimes still are, cannabis consumers. The list includes Steve Jobs, Carl Sagan, Whoopi Goldberg, Richard Branson and Oliver Sacks.\n\nAll of these incredibly productive and highly successful people have publicly talked about consuming cannabis and how it enhances their lives. None of these figures would be considered lacking in motivation by any stretch of the imagination.\n\n### The Science Behind Cannabis, Dopamine & Motivation\n\nLack of motivation can be a side effect of many different conditions, including:\n\n* Insomnia \n* Depression \n* Anxiety \n* Stress \n* Fatigue \n* Chronic pain\n\nMotivation has everything to do with our brain’s reward pathway. Engaging in certain activities—like sex or eating—increases dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that uses the brain’s reward pathway to play a critical role in so many areas such as mood, learning, pleasure and motivation. Increased dopamine levels can boost focus, motivation and feelings of enjoyment. On the flipside, too little dopamine can have opposite consequences like muscle cramps, mental fog, lethargy and lack of motivation. \n\nTo understand the critical role dopamine plays in motivation, researchers bred a group of mice that were physically incapable of producing and releasing dopamine. The 1999 study showed that [mice without dopamine lacked the motivation to even eat enough food](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC18425/). The main takeaway from the study: The proper dopamine level is critical to sustained motivation and possibly even survival. \n\nLuckily, there’s promising research that shows cannabis can increase the level and effectiveness of dopamine in the short term. A 2016 study looked at [THC’s effects on dopamine levels in the brain](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18754005). The researchers concluded that THC “induces dopamine release in the human striatum,” a part of the brain associated with our reward and motivation response. \n\nMarijuana can also determine the effectiveness of dopamine in an indirect way. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is very closely linked with the body’s dopamine signaling system. Cannabis activates CB1 receptors on GABA (a neurotransmitter acid that connects the brain and the nervous system) neurons. These GABA neurons actually work to inhibit the effectiveness of dopamine. So, essentially, cannabis temporarily suppresses GABA, the chemical that inhibits dopamine. This means dopamine production and effectiveness can increase under the influence of cannabinoids, specifically THC. That’s why high-THC sativa cannabis strains can help increase your motivation.\n\n### Cannabis Strains That Can Get You Motivated\n\nWhen considering the following marijuana strains, it’s important to note that these are all high in THC. This means you’re almost certain to experience psychoactive effects. If you’re worried about high-potency THC or feeling too high, start very slowly with these strains, and allow yourself only small doses at the beginning. \n\n#### Super Lemon Haze\n\nSuper Lemon Haze is a very popular strain, making it easily accessible for people in most states with legal cannabis laws. Its popularity comes not only from its citrusy flavor, but also its unique high. Super Lemon Haze will boost your heart rate and provide a nice surge of energy. This strain is recommended for activities like cleaning the house, filing paperwork, working out or any other task that requires focus—and can be completed with a bit of a cerebral high. \n\n#### Jack Herer\n\nThis is another extremely popular sativa hybrid strain. With Jack Herer, you can expect a high that hits hard at the front end, but fades quickly into a clear-headed, focused and creative state of mind. Try this strain when you’re working on an artistic project or brainstorming creative solutions to difficult problems. This cannabis strain isn’t recommended before bed if you have a hard time falling asleep or if you’re particularly prone to paranoia. \n\n#### Sour Tangie\n\nThis is an 80% sativa cross between Sour Diesel and Tangie. These are two very popular strains on their own, but together they create a truly enjoyable blend to boost daytime motivation. You can expect to feel elevated and creative while staying focused and productive. \n\n#### Cinex\n\nWe all have those days when our bad mood gets in the way of our motivation. In those cases, it might be time to try a little Cinex. This marijuana strain is a sativa hybrid known for its ability to melt away a bad mood and elevate energy. If you know for a fact you woke up on the wrong side of the bed, start your morning with a small dose of Cinex for a mental reset.\n\n#### Green Crack\n\nGreen Crack is a great strain to boost motivation. You’ll be pleasantly surprised how mellow this strain’s effects are at low doses compared to its rather unfortunate and dramatic name. You’ll certainly have a cerebral high, but not the kind that will distract you from the task at hand. For some consumers, it’s their strain of choice to consume before workouts. They report Green Crack gives them motivation, focus and increased endurance. \n \nLack of motivation can come as a result of all sorts of medical conditions and less chronic events like a bad night’s sleep. Most of us experience lethargy at one point or another, whether it stems from lack of sleep, illness or depression. That lethargy can make it hard to get out of bed and be productive throughout the day. And it can make it difficult to concentrate or stay awake.\n\nWhile caffeine is probably the most popular stimulant used around the world to combat fatigue, cannabis can be just as—if not more—effective. Often, one of those qualities is the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content found in a strain—typically, the higher the THC content, the more popular the cannabis strain. Most of the five most popular marijuana strains we have selected are sativa strains. Sativas are known to provide an uplifting and energetic quality as compared to indica strains, which tend to be more calming and sedative. \n\nThe most popular marijuana strains are widely produced and sold in various states where cannabis consumption is legal. All of these marijuana strains are used for their medicinal properties, but are also used recreationally as well. We consider these classic marijuana strains, which are often recognized by name even by non-cannabis consumers.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nThe five most popular marijuana strains are Blue Dream, Jack Herer, Cannatonic, Sour Diesel and OG Kush. \n\n### Popular Marijuana Strain #1: Blue Dream\n\n![Popular marijuana strain: Blue Dream](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/5817b52aeab4e6000a28b544/embedded_images/5817b52eeab4e6000a28b545/Screen_Shot_2016-10-31_at_1.54.09_PM.png) \n\n[Blue Dream](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a70be4e6c30440008cafd14/blue-dream) is arguably the most popular strain of marijuana in the country.
