For years, male cannabis consumers have sworn that the herb helps [increase sexual stamina](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-improves-your-sex-life-the-top-5-reasons-you-should-give-cannabis-a-try) and enhance sexual sensation and now research is starting to back those claims up. \n\n![Untitled63-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled63_min_459d2c3639.png)\n\n### Weed & Sex\n\nHelloMD recently conducted a survey of over 1,400 cannabis users. The survey results showed men and women reporting that cannabis had helped [enhance their sex\nlives](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-use-has-different-sexual-health-effects-for-men-and-women) and increase their sexual desire. What's more, this study isn't the only\none of its kind. In fact, a [2012 survey](http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/02791072.1982.10471911?journalCode=ujpd20) conducted by the **University of Kansas Medical School** also revealed that marijuana enhanced sexual desire and performance in respondents.\n\nWhile doctors aren't sure exactly how cannabis manages to do this, they do know that it [promotes the release of oxytocin](http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/07/050720065810.htm),\nthe \"bonding hormone\" that makes us feel closer to our sexual partners. Because of this, marijuana has often been classified as a sexual stimulant, and consumers have been taking advantage of it for years to help them perform better in the bedroom and enjoy sex more.\n\n![Untitled65-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled65_min_5236385225.png)\n\n### Traditional Medicine and Cannabis\n\nDespite what two broad-reaching surveys have found, traditional medical literature doesn't always back these claims up. In the past, studies have found that cannabis can [harm sexual\nfunction](http://www.healthline.com/health/erectile-dysfunction/is-smoking-weed-good-or-bad-for-ed), even going so far as to [cause erectile dysfunction](http://blog.sfgate.com/smellthetruth/2015/10/06/weed-dick-marijuana-may-cause-erectile-dysfunction-study-shows/) (ED) or deplete testosterone levels in men. Even modern-day doctors like\n[Rany Shamloul](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ptr.5074), Ph.D., have conducted more recent [studies and reviews](http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/02/110222122212.htm) that claim to prove a positive link between the use of marijuana and the occurrence of ED.\n\nWhile the medical evidence may seem convincing, cannabis doctors are urging consumers to avoid jumping to conclusions about the proof these studies offer that cannabis harms sexual function. These doctors state that traditional studies that look at male sexual performance and cannabis are poorly structured and in need of a more updated approach. Unfortunately, these doctors also acknowledge that it [may take quite some time](http://www.mensjournal.com/health-fitness/health/can-marijuana-save-your-sex-life-20160229) before American universities and other medical establishments begin researching sex and cannabis in earnest.\n\n![Untitled64-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled64_min_932fdca536.png)\n\n### The Future of Cannabis and Sexuality\n\nWhile traditional medicine may be lagging behind on this issue, doctors like HelloMD's own Chief Medical Officer, [Perry Solomon](https://www.linkedin.com/in/perry-solomon-md-2b27a65/), M.D., are forging ahead and prescribing cannabis to men struggling with ED, decreased libido or difficulty achieving orgasm. In the words of Dr. Solomon, \"*The way I see it, why not try cannabis? There are side effects to Viagra and zero side effects to cannabis when dosed properly*.\"\n\nWhile cannabis may be helpful in the bedroom in small doses, Solomon advocates being careful about how much consumers use. Too much marijuana can leave men feeling classically \"stoned\" and rob them of their desire to have sex at all. To avoid this, Solomon advocates that consumers use a [vape pen](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/everything-you-need-to-know-about-disposable-vape-pens) about five minutes before sex in order to time the effects of the marijuana with sexual activity. Additionally, Solomon recommends using a strain of marijuana that contains [less than 14 percent THC](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/high-cbd-marijuana-strains) and ensuring that male users consume marijuana slowly, to avoid taking too much.\n\nInterestingly, female marijuana consumers don't need to be as careful about dose as their male counterparts. While men may risk a decrease in sexual performance or desire with too much marijuana, women are relatively tolerant to virtually any dose.\n\nWhile [further research is needed](http://www.huffingtonpost.com/playboycom/how-marijuana-affects-male-sexual-performance_b_8224046.html) to bring cannabis into the mainstream as a way to enhance male sexual performance and treat conditions like ED and premature orgasm, doctors like Perry Solomon believe deeply in the treatment and are looking forward to seeing it prescribed more often to patients.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.492537313432836,"src":"/static/26399da3dfb7d56203ba21090d261170/ee604/9238181f5b6d3f0348feb45a0a299d34.png","srcSet":"/static/26399da3dfb7d56203ba21090d261170/69585/9238181f5b6d3f0348feb45a0a299d34.png 200w,\n/static/26399da3dfb7d56203ba21090d261170/497c6/9238181f5b6d3f0348feb45a0a299d34.png 400w,\n/static/26399da3dfb7d56203ba21090d261170/ee604/9238181f5b6d3f0348feb45a0a299d34.png 800w,\n/static/26399da3dfb7d56203ba21090d261170/fb92e/9238181f5b6d3f0348feb45a0a299d34.png 1184w","srcWebp":"/static/26399da3dfb7d56203ba21090d261170/58556/9238181f5b6d3f0348feb45a0a299d34.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/26399da3dfb7d56203ba21090d261170/61e93/9238181f5b6d3f0348feb45a0a299d34.webp 200w,\n/static/26399da3dfb7d56203ba21090d261170/1f5c5/9238181f5b6d3f0348feb45a0a299d34.webp 400w,\n/static/26399da3dfb7d56203ba21090d261170/58556/9238181f5b6d3f0348feb45a0a299d34.webp 800w,\n/static/26399da3dfb7d56203ba21090d261170/d8912/9238181f5b6d3f0348feb45a0a299d34.webp 1184w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2856-markdown","title":"4 Ways Women Can Up Their Chances of Achieving Orgasm","slug":"4-ways-women-can-up-their-chances-of-achieving-orgasm","content":"Ladies, let’s get straight to business: Not only do orgasms feel good, they’re good for you as well. Research suggests that the release of hormones from orgasms can have benefits like:\n\n* Reducing stress\n* Easing inflammation and pain\n* Promoting circulation \n\nBut for many women, reaching orgasm isn’t that easy. The Kinsey Institute reports that when women have sex with men, they orgasm 63% of the time. This number rises to 75% when the sex is between women and 85% when the sex is between men. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nIt’s clear that there’s an orgasm disparity, and there are many reasons why. Some of the more obvious ones are: As a society, we tend to overvalue penis-in-vagina, or penetrative sex. Additionally, men—and even women—tend to be woefully uneducated when it comes to female anatomy.\n\nSo, what can women (and men) do to close this gap? Achieving an orgasm requires both body and mind. And there are a few things you can do that can help your body get in the right state. And yep, one of those things includes consuming cannabis.\n\n### 1. Think About Sex Differently\n\nVaginal sex is just one kind of sex. There’s oral, anal and manual—to name a few. And for a lot of women, penetration doesn’t always equal orgasm. On average, it takes women 10–20 minutes to orgasm, and 70% percent of women need direct clitoral stimulation to do so. A lot of these requirements don’t seem to favor vaginal sex. \n\nGiven the numbers, it makes sense to incorporate different types of sex into a single lovemaking sesh—especially if you or your partner have differing needs.\n\nAnd who says sex has to involve two people? Masturbation can be especially helpful for women who have a hard time climaxing during partnered sex; it helps them become familiar with their bodies. Practice makes perfect, after all. \n\n### 2. Strengthen Your Pelvic Muscles \n\nYour pelvic floor muscles do a lot: They support your bladder, bowels and uterus, for instance. But they also have an important sexual function. Having stronger pelvic floor muscles can help reduce pelvic pain during intercourse and boost your ability to feel pleasurable sensations. And the best part is, you’re likely familiar with a few of these exercises, which include:\n\n* Kegels\n* Bridge pose\n* Squats\n\nYou just need to do them regularly to see results. \n\n### 3. Exercise More, Stress Less \n\nGetting your body moving can help boost your chances of achieving the big O. Not only does cardiovascular exercise increase circulation, it relieves stress and boosts confidence—all things that are needed for a healthy sex life.\n\nResearch shows that [even a small amount of exercise can boost endocrine and nervous system activity in women](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2050052118300180). Bodily changes like this can make it easier for women to get into the mood. \n\n### 4. Consume Cannabis for Better Sex \n\nOK, you knew this was coming, but seriously, there’s a reason why you keep hearing us talk about marijuana and sex: It’s because it works for a lot of people. The plant has been used as an aphrodisiac since ancient times, and this knowledge hasn’t been forgotten. \n\nSurveyed cannabis consumers say that [cannabis can increase sexual pleasure and satisfaction](https://www.jstor.org/stable/3812350?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents). Maybe that’s why [cannabis consumers have more sex](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a1db9e4eea891000897e272/cannabis-users-have-more-sex) than those who don’t consume marijuana. \n\nRELATED: [HOW CANNABIS CAN HELP WITH SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION IN WOMEN](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b9f0a7528d6e8000971f7d5/how-cannabis-can-help-with-sexual-dysfunction-in-women)\n\nMarijuana and sex seem to be a match made in heaven. Cannabis can:\n\n* Boost libido\n* Ease anxiety\n* Reduce painful sex\n* Increase sensitivity and pleasure \n\nPut simply, the plant can help us get out of our head and into our bodies. Many companies in the modern-day cannabis market have caught on to this and are making products intended to enhance consumer’s sexual experience. Some include Kikoko’s [Sensuali-tea](https://www.hellomd.com/products/58dbfaa7536356057f2a49c5/sensuali-tea) and Dosist’s [passion](https://www.hellomd.com/products/5a5e73b85f0dc80006b97fe0/passion) and [arouse](https://www.hellomd.com/products/5970fd36117b3714502f2e4c/arouse) vape pens. \n\nOverall, when it comes to reaching your peak, it’s important to remember that everyone’s different. And while orgasms feel great, they aren’t always the hallmark of a quality sexual experience. But hopefully a few of these tips will put you on the path to more frequent and satisfying orgasms. \n\nPhoto credit: [Caroline Hernandez](https://unsplash.com/@carolinehdz)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles.
