Putting on your favorite songs after consuming some marijuana can be an almost spiritual experience. Time seems to slow down, the music fully captures your attention and everything just sounds so good. \n\nI’ve had many positive experiences listening to music while enjoying cannabis, but my favorites have been when the music was live. Listening to live music can be a fun, relaxing and enjoyable way to spend free time with friends. But listening to live music after taking marijuana brings it to another level entirely. And there are actually some scientific explanations about why music seems so much richer after consuming cannabis.\n\nCurious about trying cannabis for your next live music experience? We’ve got a few recommendations on what kind of marijuana to try before your favorite artist’s next performance. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Why Cannabis Makes Music So Enjoyable\n\nMarijuana consumers tend to report an increase in enjoyment with listening to music and playing it, too. But how does cannabis make music so entertaining? Scientists have explored this question, and they have a few ideas about what’s going on:\n\n* **Cannabis slows perception of time for musicians:** One of the major factors that researchers believe affects our enjoyment of music—especially for the musicians themselves—is how we perceive time. Interestingly, cannabis can actually speed up certain mental processes, leading to a relative slowing down of time. In one study, [cannabis consumers perceived a 15-second time interval as 16.7 seconds](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/BF00402390). Some believe this helps musicians improvise, because they have more subjective time to figure out their next moves. \n\n* **Marijuana increases focus and attention:** For those listening to music, time slowing down allows them to perceive more of the music with more focus and attention. “When your time perception changes, your focus of attention changes,” says Jorg Fachner, a researcher studying the phenomena. “You might have an enhanced ability to select certain information and disregard other information, which could help distinguish the individual sounds a bit more intensively.” \n\n>This can leave the music seeming more clear, clean and distinct than it would otherwise. And this may enhance enjoyment. Previous research showed that [marijuana could also cause noises to seem louder](https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/02791072.1978.10471870), an effect that may also increase our attention to music.\n\n>In Fachner’s research, he saw that the [areas of the brain that lit up in music-listening cannabis consumers were the same areas stimulated in gifted mathematicians solving complex math problems](https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1300/J175v02n02_02). Cannabis can help us to focus more on the intricacies and details of the music, while using less mental energy to do so. \n\nRELATED: [STAFF PICKS: 8 ALBUMS TO LISTEN TO WHEN YOU’RE TOO HIGH](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b58dc91a1805500087db9bd/staff-picks-8-albums-to-listen-to-when-youre-too-high)\n\n* **Cannabis keeps your mind in the moment:** Fachner also explains that those listening to music on cannabis tend to stay in the present moment. With marijuana, it can become temporarily challenging to integrate past, present and future memories. This tends to make it easier for those consuming the plant to stay firmly in the present moment, focused on enjoying those tunes. \n\n* **Much music has been made by marijuana consumers:** Some argue that cannabis makes music more enjoyable because [a lot of music has been made by cannabis consumers](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5888177429f44d000c1d76ff/why-does-music-sound-better-with-marijuana). Taking cannabis before listening can help people get into the mindset of the musicians, and so may help the listener have more of a connection with the music. \n\n### Cannabis for Concerts: What to Try\n\nWhatever kind of music you love, cannabis can make it even more enjoyable. But there are big differences in the various types of marijuana and some strains may fit better with specific kinds of music. Before you head to your next concert or festival with some marijuana in your pocket, you may want to think about what type of cannabis would fit best with the performance you’re about to enjoy. \n\nHere are our top cannabis strain picks for a variety of musical genres that you may encounter on your musical adventures:\n\n#### For an EDM Festival, Bring Along an Uplifting Cannabis Sativa Strain\n\nTaking a trip to an electronic dance music (EDM) festival? If I feel too high, I don't want anything too slow or calming. … It actually won't relax me or make me feel good. So, I like this album because it's mid-tempo. It's peppy, but not too fast or loud or crazy. All the songs go into each other, so there's actually no silence or stopping in between the music, which I think, when I need to calm down is really nice.\n\n“There are lots of different instruments and sounds that you won't hear on the radio here. I like that it's a little different, a good tempo and not too dragging. It's enough to distract me a little bit and make me want to move around, which I find helpful, like if I’ve consumed too much THC.”\n\n### 2. “The Very Best of the Eagles” by The Eagles \n\n![The Eagles](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-c7c131bb-5ca6-47a8-b247-b6a5e1e04bf1/original.png)\n**[Melissa N.](https://www.hellomd.com/people/5697f4f109d7dd000c000018/melissa/my-story), office manager:\n** “‘The Very Best of the Eagles,’ not ‘Their Greatest Hits.’ There's a song in it for every mood. It’s one of the albums that I've listened to the most in my life.\n\n“I grew up listening to classic rock because that's what my dad listened to, and The Eagles were one of the bands that we listened to a lot. It’s just really good, mellow music.”\n\n### 3. “Weightless” by Marconi Union\n\n**[Kevin P.](https://www.hellomd.com/people/59928c89324eaa1d3e2ce54e/charmingkodiak1/my-story), customer service specialist:\n** “Marconi Union, this U.K. group, worked with neuroscientists to create music that’s theoretically the most relaxing track possible.\n\n“It's mostly ambient sounds, but it's actually designed so the beats per minute mimic the human heartbeat. It slowly descends from 60 beats per minute to 50, so it actually relaxes you. And then the different sounds they use, and the way they layer them is engineered to relax you.\n\n“My girlfriend experiences anxiety, and so that's one of the things that we've almost always got on in the background at home. There are no words; there's nothing distracting. It's just really easy to listen to, and it's designed to bring you down.”\n\n### 4. “Legend” by Bob Marley and the Wailers \n\n![Bob Marley](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-04d84e33-8be9-419a-aa2a-e5a91967a0dc/original.png)\n**[Veronica B.](https://www.hellomd.com/people/583c9403925c1a000b5029bb/veronicab/my-story), customer service specialist:\n** “This album has all of Bob Marley’s best music, including ‘Is This Love,’ ‘Redemption Song,’ ‘Waiting in Vain’ and ‘Three Little Birds,’ which is probably what would calm me the most, if I were too stoned.\n\n“Three little birds tell him everything's going to be all right. If I'm too stoned, I need that kind of relaxing affirmation. There’s also a lot of good instrumentals and percussion—just very light and not too heavy. Plus, Bob Marley and the Wailers love cannabis, so that makes it extra special.”\n\n### 5. “Kush & Orange Juice” by Wiz Khalifa \n\n\n**[Nik S.](https://www.hellomd.com/people/5afb562618263800077e507a/nsavelli/my-story), customer service specialist:\n** “‘Kush & Orange Juice’ by Wiz Khalifa—it's a classic one by him. There are lots of long chords, lots of heavy baselines, lots of acoustic. It's really just a good album to listen to. Just the music alone is so appealing that you could listen to this without any words. You can just listen to the beats and get into it.”\n\n### 6. “The Best of Sam Cooke” by Sam Cooke\n\n![Sam Cooke](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-96a9392e-ccfe-408b-b335-84f6c85c6e38/original.png)\n**[Ryan G.](https://www.hellomd.com/people/5978f93daa0db4145a24da3f/ryang/my-story), customer service lead:\n** “‘The Best of Sam Cooke’—Sam Cooke is one of my favorite singers. His voice is very soothing, and there are some slow songs and some upbeat ones on this album. \n\n“Growing up, my parents were huge on Motown. Sam Cooke takes me back to my childhood. I think that's another thing why it's so comforting to me. I felt very safe growing up around my family and friends. Anything that reminds me of my childhood is usually very comforting.”\n\n### 7. “Coyote and the Crosser” by Mark Matos & Os Beaches\n\n\n**[Dmitry B.](https://www.hellomd.com/people/5a04a8c087088100077819a9/dmitry-bikkinin/my-story), marketing videographer/editor:\n** “‘Coyote and the Crosser’ by Mark Matos & Os Beaches—it was released in 2012. It's good San Francisco folk, psychedelic folk. The whole album is really sweet. It’s about friendship, and it gets you kind of carried away into this wonderful, better reality than what we're experiencing right now. \n\n“If you feel anxiety from the craziness of the world and then you accidentally get too high, this is definitely a good tool to bring things down a notch. Shower yourself with some positive San Francisco hippie folk tunes.”\n\n### 8. “Constant Struggle” by Mystic Roots\n\n\n**[Bart S.](https://www.hellomd.com/people/5817af1a97ed67000a00143c/BartSmart/my-story), customer service specialist:\n** “‘Constant Struggle’ by Mystic Roots. It's an album I listened to when I was in college, during that transition from living at home to being in college, which can be anxiety-filled. The music really calmed me down, and it was always positive. It’s pro cannabis. They sing about Marin and Chico, and I went to school in Sonoma state, so it kind of feels like home when I’m listening to it. \n\n“It’s very positive energy and soothing. And they do talk about world issues, like police abuse and our society's tendency to overuse pharmaceuticals. It's a pro medical cannabis song, and it's also catchy. It just brings me back to what I believe in.”\n\nPhoto credits: [Emily Marie](https://unsplash.com/@sahuaromedia) (main image); [Rachel Kramer](https://www.flickr.com/photos/rkramer62/15185652345/) (The Eagles); [RCA Victor Records via Wikimedia Commons](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sam_Cooke_billboard.jpg) (Sam Cooke); [Wikimedia Commons](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bob-Marley-in-Concert_Zurich_05-30-80.jpg) (Bob Marley).\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56201c206430320006bb0000/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Bob Ross.\r\n\r\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\r\n\r\n### 2. Cook Delicious Food\r\n\r\n`embed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unAOVy92a_8` \r\n\r\nI’m not sure who can say no to good eats after consuming cannabis. When the cravings for food hit, don’t just reach for the nacho cheese Doritos or hit the speed dial (I know it’s the pizza guy—your secret is safe with me). Instead, whip up a tasty stir-fry, or, if you’re more the Gordon Ramsey type, a savory gnocchi with peas and Parmesan to stave off the munchies.\r\n\r\n### 3. Virtual Reality With Cardboard\r\n\r\n`embed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GOyibr5Jn8` \r\n\r\nVirtual Reality, the latest evolution of visual media, is an awe-inspiring technology. Whether you’ve already experienced VR in some form or are completely new to the tech, it’s undeniably entertaining. The headsets are getting cheaper and cheaper, while cellphone setups like [Google’s Cardboard](https://store.google.com/product/google_cardboard?utm_source=en-ha-na-us-sem&utm_medium=desktop&utm_content=plas&utm_campaign=Cardboard&gl=us&gclid=CKmvrvzh9dICFZNafgodU0gMhw&sku=_google_cardboard_single) are just $15. I can think of no better way to peek into the future, than with your favorite strain.\r\n\r\n### 4. Listen to Other People’s Voicemail\r\n\r\n`embed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MrPNrZgWGs` \r\n\r\nI’m not suggesting you do this in a creepy way. Watch this video for some laughs. A truck driver leaves a voicemail on a coworker’s phone when he sees an accident involving four old ladies, an angry driver and an umbrella. I really don’t want to give too much away on this one. Try not to laugh out loud, I dare you. \r\n\r\n### 5. Visit Your Local Planetarium or Observatory\r\n\r\n`embed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUcv3ORj2jc` \r\n\r\nIf you’re more of Carl Sagan’s sort of cannasseur, then check out your local science museums and colleges for observatory hours or planetarium expositions. Learning about the vast expanses of space is one thing, but taking a look at it first hand is a humbling experience. Throw cannabis into the mix and allow your mind to expand right alongside the universe. In an increasingly mad and [dangerous world](http://420tribune.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/marijuana-quote-carl-sagan1-e1303944450131.jpg), I’m sure Carl Sagan would approve. \r\n\r\n### 6. Play With a Pet\r\n\r\n`embed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6_OZb9m4K4` \r\n\r\nWhat could be better than spending time with an adorable animal that loves you with an unconditional fever? Connecting with your best friend—be it cat, dog, squirrel or other—while consuming cannabis is a great way to pass the time and engage with your fur baby in a meaningful way. Cannabis is already known for increasing feelings of empathy and connection. Combine this with a loving mass of furry wiggles, and you’re sure to have a great time.\r\n\r\n### 7. Check Out Some Amazing Live Music\r\n\r\n`embed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASzbEFotwYc`\r\n\r\nHit up your local venues or plan to go to a concert ahead of time. Cannabis affects the way we hear and perceive music in numerous ways. It can help you hear the beauty of each melody and allow you to grasp a more intense feeling of the arrangement as a whole. Rock out to your favorite artist or find a new local band that really gets you moving. Even better, check out a totally fresh genre while consuming your cannabis and connect to new music in a novel way.\r\n\r\n### 8. Try a New Activity\r\n\r\n`embed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f92yfPFl9NY`\r\n\r\nI’m not suggesting you take on motocross, but if you’ve been afraid of shooting a basketball or never could get around to Zorbing, cannabis could actually increase your coordination (not for everyone though). Some strains do affect your coordination adversely, so it’s important to pick the right one. A smooth sativa, like Jack Herer, will give you a motivational boost to get out there and try something new, without being too hard on yourself or self-conscious about trying a brand new activity. \r\n\r\n### 9. Get a Thai Massage\r\n\r\n`embed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNVb3XVcxgs`\r\n\r\nRelieve stress on all fronts by using cannabis in combination with a relaxing Thai massage, where they do the stretching for you. It's kind of like the lazy person's yoga. Cannabis has already been shown to relieve muscle tension and reduce inflammation. Add this to an hour with a trained massage therapist and watch as all of your troubles and worries melt away into oblivion. This should almost be mandatory for any serious cannasseur. I know you have time Thursday afternoons; just schedule it in. Thank me later.\r\n\r\n### 10. Get Yourself Some Live Comedy\r\n\r\n`embed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTbrM3ubUDU`\r\n\r\nCheck out your local venues for any comedy shows in the area. It’s hard to beat seeing your favorite act paired with your favorite strain. You can get a lot of mileage out of Netflix specials, though nothing compares to the raw laughs of a live show. Fun almost no matter the occasion. \r\n\r\nIf you're new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. The notes seem clearer and the lyrics seem to radiate in a way that they just don’t when you have not consumed cannabis. There are no studies I am aware of that indicate why cannabis makes music sound better, but there is a lot of anecdotal evidence that serves to explain how music gets an extra boost from cannabis consumption. \n\n[A 2011 study](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21412224), published in the journal _Neuropharmacology_ found that cannabis does have some affect on auditory processing in humans. The study, which looked at 14 different subjects, each on three different occasions, used FRMI, or functional magnetic resonance imaging, to see if cannabis affected the auditory and visual processing of people. In the study, THC and CBD were isolated and tested separately, each appearing to have different effects on the auditory system. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Cannabis Makes You Tune In\n\nIt turns out, cannabis can help people focus only on relevant stimuli. Cannabis can also help you become more alert and focused, so when you are listening to music you may be able to become more zoned into the specifics of a song. Cannabis can also assist in relaxing you and rid you of outside stresses, so music can be enjoyed on a deeper level. As a result, the more immersed you become in the music, the better it sounds and the more you connect with the it. \n\nRELATED: [DOES CANNABIS MAKE YOU MORE CREATIVE?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/587d4c611faa3400083e7de1/does-cannabis-make-you-more-creative)\n\nSmoking or ingesting marijuana can also help you enter a meditative state, which can allow you to absorb the music you are listening to even more. You may have noticed how it allows you to feel more freely and enhances your ability to access emotions that you may otherwise keep hidden. It so happens, music is closely tied with memories and emotions, which makes cannabis a great pairing for fantastic music you may have heard before. Possibly most importantly, however, is that cannabis has the ability to stimulate happy feelings. When you are listening to music and you are feeling euphoria, it is far more likely to sound amazing and be more enjoyable. \n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/5888177429f44d000c1d76ff/embedded_images/588817e1e60ed8000c5dc048/IMG_0093.JPG)\n Morrissey is a classic favorite to listen to while consuming\n\n### Music History & Cannabis\n\nMany musicians, from Lady Gaga to Bob Marley, have found inspiration from using cannabis and attribute much of their creative success to it. Cannabis is closely tied to many different genres of music, both with positive and negative connotations. \n\nEDM: Electric music has experienced a hay-day in recent years, becoming increasingly popular as the music festival scene has grown. EDM is full of cannabis references and it has become a large part of the culture. \n\nFolk: From Bob Dylan to the Grateful Dead to Willie Nelson, cannabis has been a part of folk music culture for as long as it has been around. Folk music has long been associated with hippies and the counterculture of the 60s and 70s, making cannabis a great companion. \n\nHip Hop: Cannabis has long been tied with hip hop and rap, being referenced constantly in songs. Hip hop lyrics involving cannabis are some of the most well-known references to marijuana. Hip hop has also given us some of our biggest cannabis legalization advocates, like Snoop Dog. \n\nJazz: Cannabis and Jazz have a long and storied history that many people do not know. Anti-cannabis advocates used racism towards African American Jazz musicians as a reason to outlaw cannabis, which they were rumored to smoke. Despite the propaganda used by anti-marijuana groups, some Jazz musicians were cannabis fans. Louis Armstrong was known for his song called “Muggles”, which was a slang term for marijuana. \n\nPop: Does “I get high with a little help from my friends” ring a bell to you? The Beatles did not shy away from their affection for cannabis, and neither do modern day pop stars like Miley Cyrus. Cyrus has been open with her marijuana use, even smoking a joint on live television. \n\nReggae: Cannabis’ number one advocate before Snoop Dog came along was Bob Marley. He often attributed his success with writing new music to cannabis consumption and it became a very integral part of the reggae image he fostered. \n\nRock: From the Beach Boys to Jimi Hendrix, many rock icons used cannabis to help them kick back while out on the road. Though rock is sometimes associated with harder drugs, cannabis has long been a part of the rock culture and process. \n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/5888177429f44d000c1d76ff/embedded_images/588817e2e60ed8000c5dc049/IMG_0095.JPG) \nBowie is profound and we all miss him, my LP keeps him alive\n\n### HelloMD’s Cannabis Playlist\n\nHere are some of the songs that we think go great with some delicious edibles or a nice vaporizer on a Friday night. \n\nPurple Haze - Jimi Hendrix\n\nScarlett Begonias - Sublime\n\nComfortably Numb - Pink Floyd\n\nHere Comes the Sun - The Beatles\n\nRipple - The Grateful Dead\n\nTimes They are A-Changin’ - Bob Dylan\n\nLost in My Mind - The Head and The Heart\n\nCeleste - Ezra Vine\n\n_____________________________________________________________________\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post.
