If you are not familiar, Muir Woods is the iconic state park full of redwoods, set aside by the nature conservationist John Muir, and is located in Marin County, CA. After shaking off my grogginess, I ended up meeting the group of hikers upon their return at a Muir Woods clubhouse, seemingly perched on top of the world. Photo by Dosist_\n\nThe sound bath, a practice of sound therapy, a trend on the rise throughout California, was led by [Danny Goldberg](http://www.dannygoldberg.org/DannyGoldberg.org/Sound_Therapy.html). Danny has been doing sound immersion for Stanford University’s Health Improvement Program as well as many yoga, wellness & spiritual centers throughout the SF Bay Area and Santa Cruz.\n\nDanny explains, “The physiological impact of sound on the body, emotions & cognition is apparent. Laying down on our mats with plush pillows, Danny started a group meditation through the use of sound immersion that reverberated through every inch the body. At one point he placed a metal singing bowl upon my chest and the sound vibrated to my fingertips. \n\nAfter an hour of this incredible journey I felt both relaxed but also mentally alert. Their latest report released in February showed more than 183,000 Americans have died from overdoses related to prescription opioids in the last 16 years, with 91 Americans dying each day.  This number is even larger when we include deaths due to heroin overdose, which caused nearly 13,000 in 2015 alone.  According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), nearly half of young people who inject heroin abused prescription opioids first. \r\n\r\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/595413ae914ae4001b40307a/embedded_images/595413af914ae4001b40307b/Screen_Shot_2017-06-28_at_1.14.20_PM.png) \r\n\r\nResearchers have already noticed a decline in overdose-related deaths in states where cannabis is medically legal, and the evidence will continue to build as time goes on.  A study published last July by Health Affairs found that a typical physician in a state where medical cannabis is legal prescribed 1,826 fewer painkiller doses in a given year for Medicare patients because seniors chose to treat their pain with medical cannabis.  Researcher and cannabis policy maker Amanda Reiman states, “the treatment of pain has become a politicized business in the United States. The result has been the rapidly rising rate of opioid related overdoses and dependence.”\r\n\r\n### Cannabis Effectively Treats Chronic Pain\r\n\r\nThis past year UC Berkeley partnered with HelloMD to conduct the largest patient survey ever exploring the use of cannabis as a substitute for opiate and non-opiate based pain medication. Welty PhD, NCC, LPCC-S, LSW, of Kent State University.   With access to HelloMD’s patient database they were able to mine data from the nation’s largest community of medical cannabis patients.  Surveys were sent out to HelloMD’s entire patient database, and data was collected from close to 3,000 participants.  Patients were asked about their usage of cannabis and how it affected their consumption of opioids. Among the key findings, the study found: \r\n\r\n>* 97% “strongly agreed/agreed” that they could decrease their opioid use when using cannabis\r\n>* 92% “strongly agreed/agreed” that they prefer cannabis to treat their medical condition\r\n>* 81% “strongly agreed/agreed” that cannabis by itself was more effective than taking cannabis with opioids.  The results were similar when using cannabis with non-opiate based pain medications. \r\n\r\n\r\n“The results of our study were striking, showing 97% of people were able to decrease the amount of opioids that they used in conjunction with cannabis use. This was more than double the amount shown in any previous studies conducted,” said Dr. Perry Solomon.  “The latest publication from the National Academy of Sciences clearly showed that chronic pain is one of the medical conditions that cannabis can be used for with great efficacy. Our study not only supports this but also goes further in that the clear majority of patient’s state that they prefer it. Hopefully this will awaken the public, medical professionals and legislatures to the fact that there is a safe, non-addictive product available to help fight the opioid epidemic, and that is cannabis.”\r\n\r\nAmanda Reiman adds, “Cannabis has been used throughout the world for thousands of years to treat pain and other physical and mental health conditions. Malkin’s story is an interesting one because she is someone who once fought against marijuana legalization, but eventually grew to see its efficacy as a medication, even though her daughter did not find long term relief from the product.  Malkin’s daughter suffers from a variety of conditions, including abnormal breathing, chronic pain and fatigue all of which left her bedridden. After seeing many different specialists and being prescribed many medications that had harsh side effects, a neurologist suggested that she try to give her daughter CBD oil. \r\n\r\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\r\n\r\nAt the time, her daughter became one of 360 children under the age of 18 who was a part of Colorado’s medical cannabis program. Cannabis only provided temporary relief for Malkin’s daughter, but she watched many other families find long term solutions with cannabis. The transformative abilities inherent within the plant made Malkin a cannabis advocate. She became increasingly concerned after hearing about a possibility for it to be limited as a medication due to how the newTrump Administration views marijuana. In Malkin’s own words, “let me be clear as a liberty-loving, conservative mom: keep your hands off. Let the scientists lead. Limited government is the best medicine.”\r\n\r\nMalkin’s opinion piece is just another in a long line of parents speaking up in defense of medical marijuana. Medical cannabis has been able to change peoples’ lives, including relieving children of terrible suffering and setting parents minds at ease. We are also now seeing more clinical trials to supplement anecdotal evidence that cannabis, particularly CBD, can be extremely beneficial to children. Patients, experts, and even the Health Commissioner of the state of New York, believed that access to medical cannabis was too difficult for patients in need based on the limited number of health conditions allowed. \n\nNew York began its medical marijuana industry with a very strict set of conditions that allowed patients to access cannabis. This only included conditions that were considered extremely serious or terminal, including HIV/AIDs, Parkinson’s, Cancer, Epilepsy, MS, and other equally serious conditions. Chronic pain was recently added to the list of reasons for which patients could receive a medical marijuana recommendation. For a state the size of New York, this limited scope greatly limits accessibility for patients who may need medical cannabis for a variety of conditions. When the state’s [medical program](https://cannabis.ny.gov/practitioners) initially launched, it only allowed doctors licensed in the state of New York, to recommend medical marijuana. A new bipartisan bill, however, has gained traction in New York to add Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as a qualifying condition for medical cannabis. We have seen that cannabis, particularly CBD based products, can greatly benefit those who suffer from PTSD, many of whom are veterans. \n\nThe bill has passed through the New York health committee and is now going up for a vote in the state senate. Michael Krawitz, the executive director of Veterans for Medical Cannabis Access, has [said about the progress of the bill](https://www.forbes.com/sites/debraborchardt/2017/05/11/new-york-state-adds-ptsd-to-medical-marijuana-program-will-menstrual-cramps-be-next/#2f73ea0b1108), “I am grateful to the Senate Health Committee for advancing this compassionate bill, and on behalf of countless veterans who could benefit, I urge the full Senate to promptly approve the bill. Veterans with PTSD should not have to choose between FDA-approved medications that carry a black box suicide warning and off-label drugs with no clinical efficacy and horrible side effects…There is another way: medical marijuana has helped veterans have a restful night’s sleep instead of night terrors, and thus experience a better quality of life.” The bill to add PTSD to the list of qualifying conditions is not the only bill related to cannabis that is going to the senate floor. \n\n[Bill 582](https://nyassembly.gov/leg/?bn=A00582&term=&Summary=Y&Actions=Y&Votes=Y&Memo=Y&Text=Y), which was put forward [by assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal](https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2017/06/157147/marijuana-period-pain-cramps-new-york-law), is attempting to add dysmenorrhea and other PMS related pain to the list of approved conditions. This bill has a high profile supporter, Whoopi Goldberg, who is willing to come forward and help the cause of getting this bill pushed forward. Goldberg said she will work hard to help the state senate understand why Bill 582 is important, “I'm going to try. New York, however, still has some hurdles for its cannabis marketplace. Patients have a limited selection of medical cannabis products, and the state only allows adults 21 years of age or older to buy and possess up to three ounces of cannabis flower and up to 24 grams of concentrated cannabis (oils, tincture, edibles, vapes, etc.) to be consumed. Other product types are not allowed, which may in turn allow the black market to flourish. An expansion of products could help benefit a variety of legal patients.\n\nNew York Ex-Governor Cuomo has addressed another issue, the lack of doctors. To help expand the [cannabis industry he says](http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/new-york-medical-marijuana-program-struggles-grow-doctors-list-article-1.3142349), “We need to get more doctors knowledgeable and comfortable in prescribing marijuana.” The expansion of the number of prescribing doctors is not aided by the Medical Society of New York, which has made comments about the supposed lack of scientific evidence to support cannabis as a medication. The number of overdose deaths have doubled in Colorado since 2000 and the state has the second highest rate of prescription drug abuse in the country. \n\n### A Health Crisis in Motion\n\nA proponent of the bill, [Representative Brittany Pettersen](http://gazette.com/colorado-advances-measures-to-step-up-battle-against-opioid-addiction/article/1603635) of Lakewood, has been pushing for new movement in the state to fight the opioid epidemic, \"Our state and nation are facing a health crisis and it is imperative we take action to support people who are suffering from this disease…For far too long, these people have been disregarded because of the stigma associated with addiction. But after years of overprescribing, a large portion of the population is addicted to pain pills. There will be an addition of behavioral therapy support provided to help local agencies in the counties that are going to be involved in the pilot program. Other organizations can also apply for grants from the College of Nursing for other opioid treatment programs. Patients, experts, and even the Health Commissioner of the state of New York, believed that access to medical cannabis was too difficult for patients in need based on the limited number of health conditions allowed. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nNew York began its medical marijuana industry with a very strict set of conditions that allowed patients to access cannabis. This only included conditions that were considered extremely serious or terminal, including HIV/AIDs, Parkinson’s, Cancer, Epilepsy, MS, and other equally serious conditions. \n\nChronic pain was recently added to the list of reasons for which patients could receive a medical marijuana recommendation. Adding chronic pain as a qualifying condition has been a major step in allowing more patients in need to access medical marijuana. This is especially important as cannabis is now being seen as an effective alternative to harsh opioids that are often prescribed for chronic pain.\n\n### Increasing Accessibility for Patients\n\nThe new changes are part of an effort by the state to put medical cannabis within reach for those who need it most. A new bipartisan bill, however, has gained traction in New York to add Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as a qualifying condition for medical cannabis. We have seen that cannabis, particularly CBD based products, can greatly benefit sufferers of PTSD, many of whom are veterans. \n\nThe bill has passed through the New York health committee and is now going up for a vote in the state senate. The Rohrabacher - Farr bill was originally introduced in 2014 by a bipartisan team of California legislators to end the allocation of funds to government entities for the prosecuting of medical marijuana companies in states where medical cannabis has become legal. \n\n### Federal Funds Not Used for Medical Crackdown\n\nPresident Donald Trump [issued a statement](http://www.businessinsider.com/medical-marijuana-trump-administration-2017-first-statement-2017-5) after the passing of the bill saying, \"Division B, section 537 provides that the Department of Justice may not use any funds to prevent implementation of medical marijuana laws by various States and territories. In a closed meeting in April Sessions indicated that it was not a priority for the Justice Department to prosecute state sanctioned marijuana businesses. This uneasy peace shows an uncertain future for the industry. Cannabis got favorable marks in this new survey; 67% of people surveyed perceived opioids to be riskier than cannabis, 76% of people indicated they believed marijuana to be less dangerous than tobacco and 70% thinking cannabis is less risky then alcohol. Also, 83% of people surveyed believed that cannabis should be medically legal nationwide.\n\n55 million Americans use medical marijuana, which is not surprising considering the new trend towards acceptance. Recreational marijuana, however, got mixed reviews in the recent survey. Only 49% of people believed that recreational marijuana should be legalized, just 2% more than the amount of people who were opposed to it. That was in association with 4% of people who were not certain about whether they believe it should be recreationally legal or not. People who tried cannabis, however, were more accepting of recreational legalization with 70% of those being in favor, as compared to 26% of people who have never tried marijuana. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n\n### Less Stigma?\n\nCannabis, is also becoming more socially acceptable. 56% of people surveyed believe that cannabis consumption is socially acceptable, even though 51% of people do believe cannabis consumption is a health risk. 52% of consumers are millennials, showing a clear distinction between generations. Millennials, interestingly, were also the most conflicted generation about their cannabis use. 25% of millennials felt guilty about cannabis use, compared to just 17% of non-millennials. \n\nParents are also a growing group of cannabis consumers. 54% of adult cannabis consumers are parents, the majority with children under the age of 18. Nearly all parents surveyed, however, will not consume cannabis while in the company of their children. There is also a clear distinction between political parties when it comes to cannabis consumption. Only 14% of cannabis consumers are Republicans, showing the great majority to be Democrats or Independents. \n\n### Medical Marijuana More Accepted\n\nWhat is clear from the survey is that medical marijuana consumption is considered more mainstream than recreational consumption. Most consumers who were surveyed consume cannabis for medical reasons, with only 16% saying they used cannabis “just for fun”. Far more consumers use cannabis to help with pain, to assist with relaxation, or to make them more comfortable in social situations. \n\nThe study by Yahoo and Marist is just one indicator that cannabis has gone mainstream. Congressmen agreed with the findings of the study and have recently started a Congressional Cannabis Caucus to approach the issue in the coming years. The caucus is a bipartisan effort for lawmakers from states where cannabis is legal to educate other lawmakers on what the cannabis industry is like. \n\nRepublican congressman from California, Dana Rohrabacher, who is also a caucus member, [said in a news release about the caucus](https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2017/02/17/just-how-mainstream-is-marijuana-theres-now-a-congressional-cannabis-caucus/?utm_term=.9335b65a529c) that, \"The federal government’s decades-long approach to marijuana is a colossal, cruel joke, and most Americans know it…Not only have incalculable amounts of taxpayers’ dollars been wasted, but countless lives have been unnecessarily disrupted and even ruined by misguided law enforcement.\" The caucus is a clear sign that cannabis is on the mind of many lawmakers and that the progression of the industry is particularly on the minds of congressmen who’s constituencies are in states where cannabis is legal. \n\n### Investors, Entrepreneurs & Celebrities...\n\nThe cannabis industry is also attracting more mainstream investors to its ranks. The industry was once seen as a grey area, but now, more investors, including tech companies and celebrities, are stepping into the ever expanding industry. In 2016, the cannabis industry, both recreational and medical, brought in $6.9 billion in sales, a 34% increase from the previous year. The products were evaluated and determined to not achieve the things they claimed. None of the over the counter products had received FDA confirmation of their cancer-fighting potential before advertising to consumers. The companies must pull the products or change how they are advertised so they do not reflect the false claims that originally got them in trouble. If these companies do not respond, it could result in a seizure of products or even criminal prosecutions. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nThe fourteen companies who were issued letters are AIE Pharmaceuticals, Inc.; Amazing Sour Sop Inc.; BioStar Technology International LLC; Caudill Seed & Warehouse Inc.; DoctorVicks.com; Everything Herbs; Hawk Dok Natural Salve LLC; Healing Within Products & Services Inc.; LifeVantage Corp.; Nature's Treasure Inc.; Oxygen Health Systems LLC; Sunstone Inc.; The Vibrant Health Store LLC dba Dr. Christopher's Herbs; and The Vitamin C Foundation, many of which who have already responded to the letters by the FDA in different capacities. The companies distributed a variety of products including pills, ointments, drops, oils, teas, and syrups, many of which are sold online, particularly through social media. \n\n### False Claims?\n\nThe recent letters by the FDA against these companies has gained a large amount of media attention, particularly because the products are claimed to treat such a serious condition. Many of these companies, who strongly relied on online profiles where people did not thoroughly check and research the claims, used a variety of tricks to make it appear that their products achieved what they claimed, though their claims are unfounded by the FDA. \n\nThe FDA stated on their [online blog](https://blogs.fda.gov/fdavoice/index.php/2017/04/fda-takes-action-against-fraudulent-cancer-products/) that, “Often a single product was promoted as a treatment or cure for multiple diseases in humans and animals. Patients should consult a health care professional about proper prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.”\n\n### Some Similarities with Cannabis\n\nThere are some similar claims in the world of cannabis, particularly in relation to cancer. The ability of cannabis to help with many conditions is widely documented, but cancer enters and interesting grey area between anecdotal evidence and preclinical testing. Rick Simpson Oil (RSO) is a product that almost everyone has heard of if they have looked for cannabis as a cure for cancer. \n\nCreated by Rick Simpson, who was said to have used high quality cannabis oil to cure his own metastatic skin cancer in 2003, has become a major advocate for the use of cannabis in cancer treatment. He recommends a 90 day protocol using cannabis oil, that can be made on your own, which involves the use of 60g of oil. His protocol has caught the eyes of many people, and though it may be extremely beneficial, it has never been formally tested. Many companies also claim to sell Rick Simpson Oil even though it is not necessarily the same product.\n\n### Cannabis May be Beneficial\n\nThe National Cancer Institute lists a variety of studies that show that cannabis may be very beneficial for people with cancer. A 1996 [study published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8662742) showed that cannabinoids could help decrease the viability of the growth of certain types of tumors. The benefits of cannabinoids in the study included cell death, the blocking of cell growth, and the preventing of blood vessel development in tumors. \n\nAnother [study published in FASEB](http://www.fasebj.org/content/17/3/529.full) from 2003 showed that CBD could make chemotherapy more effective. This is due to CBD’s ability to help increase the death of cancer cells, but help protect noncancerous cells. All of the studies, though preclinical, do show great promise for cannabis as a component of cancer treatment. \n\n### Proven Symptom Relief\n\nWe do know for sure that cannabis is extremely effective at helping with a variety of symptoms associated with cancer and chemotherapy. Cannabis can aid with pain, appetite loss, and nausea, all which are a part of life with cancer. Cannabis may be the key to aiding in effective cancer treatment, but before there are clinical trials we can not be completely certain about its potential.
