More than a month later, however, the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office in Minnesota released a report on his cause of death. \r\n\r\n### Opioid's to Blame (Again)\r\n\r\nThey stated that Prince’s death was caused by an accidental overdose of fentanyl, an opioid that is many times more potent than heroin. A police warrant showed that Prince had been written a prescription for fentanyl by Dr Michael Schulenberg on the day before he died and that the singer was in the possession of prescription pain killers at the time of his death. It was believed that Prince was prescribed the opioids for his ongoing knee and hip pain caused by years of on-stage stunts. \r\n\r\nAn attorney for Prince’s half-siblings brought to light that Prince had an addiction to Percocet decades before his eventual death. One of Prince’s half-siblings also made clear that Prince had began to use opioids to deal with pain, not as a recreational drug, similar to many others who later become afflicted with opioid addictions. Six days before Prince’s death, on April 15, his plane made an emergency landing during a flight home from Atlanta, after Prince was found to be unresponsive. CNN reported that a law enforcement agent had said that Prince was treated for a potential overdose of opioids. Just a day before Prince’s death, his team contacted an opioid addiction specialist with the goal of getting the pop star into a proper pain management regime and to potentially treat him for addiction related issues. Prince’s story is only the most recent of many that is shedding light on the devastating opioid addiction problem facing the United States. \r\n\r\n### The Culprit\r\n\r\nFentanyl is the, “most potent opioid available for use in medical treatment,” according to the Drug Enforcement Administration. The US DEA has released a national report on the dangers of fentanyl, explaining that even doses as small as 0.25 mg it can be potentially lethal. The CDC has stated that fentanyl is 50 times stronger than heroine, and 100 times stronger than morphine. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid painkiller that has been approved for treating severe pain. Despite its dangers, fentanyl is one of the most commonly prescribed pain killers. Fentanyl is a medication that comes on quickly and fades just as fast, so it is not useful for long term pain control. Fentanyl can administered in a variety of ways and forms from skin patches to injections to oral applications. \r\n\r\n### The Opioid Problem\r\n\r\nThere has been a 500% increase in fentanyl-related overdoses in Ohio alone between 2013 and 2014, but fentanyl only makes up part of the 78 fatal opioid overdoses that happen in the United States everyday. Most fentanyl-related overdoses are linked to fentanyl that has been laced with heroine or cocaine, according to the CDC. The rate of opioid overdoses has quadrupled since 1999, as has the number of prescriptions written for them. 32% of opioid prescriptions are being abused and often prescription opioid abuse leads to heroine use down the line. \r\n\r\nIn a testimony to congress by Nora D. Volkow, the director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, a plan was laid out in attempt to relieve the United States of its opioid epidemic. Volkow listed a number of steps to increase education and add early intervention services to help decrease the number of opioid overdoses. In the plan, Volkow spoke about prescription drug monitoring programs, overdose education, abuse-deterrent drug formulas, and increased law enforcement to work against pill mills. \r\n\r\n### A Safer Alternative\r\n\r\nOpioid addiction and overdose has become a tremendous issue. Cannabis has shown to be as effective as opioids in treating certain chronic pain and has fewer associated side effects than opioids. States that have legalized cannabis for medical purposes have see a tremendously lower annual opioid overdose death rate. Opioid overdose related death decreased by 20% after the first year of medical marijuana legalization and 33.7% after 5 years. Cannabis can also be used to supplement opioid use, decreasing the doses of opioids needed to control pain. From Elizabeth Warren and Baltimore Ravens player Eugene Monroe, people have been calling for cannabis to be legitimized and decriminalized for use as an alternative to opioid painkillers. Each overdose and tragedy amplifies the need for marijuana as a safer alternative to opioids that are reeking havoc throughout the United States. \r\n\r\nInterested in asking a question about this? Sava offers next day delivery for patients throughout California and is one of the newest collectives gaining a passionate following of enthusiastic medicinal cannabis patients. Andrea is extremely knowledgeable about cannabis and here she shares her Ayurvedic recipe for a CBD tonic/tea.\n\n### The Tea\nBased on the Ayurvedic recipe for “Golden Milk”, this tea combines turmeric, ginger, coconut oil, honey, and CBD to provide relief from inflammation, arthritis, sore muscles, hangover, and a range of other maladies. \n\n### Turmeric\nTurmeric has long been used in South Asia for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. \nOn the Japanese island of Okinawa - where the population has one of the longest average lifespans - turmeric tea is a staple of daily life. In India, turmeric was first used in food and was then discovered to have a range of medicinal benefits - antiseptic, anti-inflammatory detoxifying. It has also been shown to prevent and reverse the effects of Alzheimer's and is currently being studied for its anti-cancer effects. \n\n### Curcumin\nCurcumin, the ingredient in turmeric that makes it yellow and gives it spice, is what science attributes many of its healing properties. In order for your body to absorb the curcumin, it is paired with both a fat and with black pepper. \n\n### Piperine\nPiperine, a compound found in black pepper, has been shown to increase the bioavailability of otherwise hard to absorb curcumin by 2000%. Without the piperine, curcumin is metabolized in the liver and intestinal wall. When I make this tonic, I either add in or leave out black pepper based on how I feel. If I want my liver and intestinal wall to receive the benefits - maybe after a large rich meal or one too many glasses of wine - I leave the pepper out. If I want relief from joint or muscle pain or want my entire body to reap the effects, I add pepper in. Fat also assist with absorption, hence coconut oil which has its own host of benefits. \n\n### Ginger\nGinger, another powerful root with a big reputation, has been shown time and time again to have strong anti-inflammatory properties without the side effects of pharmaceuticalsas well as anti-oxidative and anti-cancer effects (5). It has also long been used to soothe the digestive system. \n\n### Cannabidiol\nCannabidiol, also known as CBD, is an important medicinal cannabinoid that produces no “high.” CBD relieves pain and anxiety, and research has shown it to have antibacterial, anti-convulsive, anti-carcinogenic, anxiolytic, antidepressant, analgesic, antiemetic, anti-inflammatory, anti-ischemic, antispasmodic, antipsychotic, anti-insomnia and neuroprotection properties.\n\n### How To\n\nMix all of the ingredients together with a spoonful of honey and you have a delicious health tonic that can be used for specific ailments or as an everyday preventative medicine. \n\nIngredients \n>- ½ to 1 inch of turmeric root (or a tsp of turmeric powder)\n- ½ to 1 inch of ginger root\n- 1 tsp coconut oil\n- 1 cup of your favorite milk (almond or hemp is delicious!)\n- 1 cup of warm water\n- 2 tsp honey\n- Sprinkle of black pepper\n- Drops of high CBD tincture\n\nWarm the milk. Add all other ingredients to a blender. Combine in your favorite mug and enjoy! \n\nAlternately, all ingredients can be blended together cool and served over ice. \n\nThis can be made in a larger batch and store in your refrigerator for several days or you can combine all ingredients, aside from milk and water, into a paste that you keep for up to a week adding to hot water and milk when you want a cup. Adjust the honey, pepper, ginger, and turmeric depending on your flavor preferences - whether you like things spicy or sweet - and drink to good health. \n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Most rely on prescription drugs to ease their aches on a daily basis. It has been reported that 52 million Americans use painkillers regularly both medically and recreationally. \r\n\r\nPrescription drugs come with a slew of side effects—some that may hinder your ability to drive or remain alert. There’s also the risk of addiction and even fatal overdose that can be associated with prescription pain medicines. A recent study found that over 28,000 people died from an opioid overdose in 2014 alone. The numbers are staggering, despite prescription narcotic drugs still remaining a common staple in the average home. \r\n\r\n### Pain Relief With Medical Marijuana\r\n\r\nCannabis has a long-standing relationship with pain sufferers and has been used as a pain reducer for centuries. It's the solution for those who want to live a healthy, natural life without depending on harmful substances. \r\n\r\nFor folks with muscular pain and even certain skin conditions, cannabis topicals have proven especially beneficial and can offer something prescription medications can’t—an uninterrupted life. Cannabis topicals don’t make you high, they don’t interfere with your ability to work or remain active, and they take effect right away so you feel relief immediately.\r\n\r\nHowever, as cannabis use grows, this question comes into play: “Will cannabis interfere with my life?” One concern is how cannabis topicals may conflict with drug testing. [Will THC show up in my system if I use a cannabis topical?](https://www.hellomd.com/answers/5754b6a0a21c84000700009f/will-sweet-relief-show-up-on-a-drug-test)\r\n\r\n### Types of Cannabis Topicals\r\n\r\nThe first thing to consider is what kind of topical you’re using. Topicals come in different forms: salves, oils, sprays and lotions. Any topical that’s administered to the skin isn’t going to enter your bloodstream. You won’t experience a high, and you won’t have trace amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in your system. This is similar to a doctor rubbing alcohol on your skin to cleanse an area. Skin contact with rubbing alcohol won’t intoxicate you because it’s not entering your bloodstream. Should you decide to go rogue and take a swig—that’s another story. \r\n\r\nThere are other forms of skin-administered cannabis that do transmit THC into the bloodstream and can produce a positive drug test. One example would be the transdermal patch. Transdermal cannabis patches act very much like nicotine patches. Their purpose is to deliver a strong dose of THC to the patient through the skin’s surface. In the case of the patch a drug test will likely turn up positive. \r\n\r\n### Take Precautions With Marijuana Topicals\r\n\r\nAlthough rubbing a cannabis-infused topical on your skin will not get you high or cause you to fail a drug test, there are some things to consider. While skin contact can’t deliver a high, contact with your mouth or eyes can. Just like any other topical medication, chemical or inedible substance, you should be careful to avoid ingesting it by accident. The best way to avoid this is to wash your hands right after you apply your medication. If you want to be extra careful, you can even wear plastic gloves to apply cannabis topicals.\r\n\r\nIf you’re a nail biter, an eye rubber or even if you plan to enjoy a nice warm bath immediately after you apply a topical, be careful. There’s still the risk that you can spread the topical to areas of your body that will deliver it to the bloodstream. Use the same safety precautions you would for any form of medication. It’s also important to understand the difference between topical creams and patches if you need to take a drug test. \r\n\r\n**Remember Cannabis Topical Safety:**\r\n\r\n* Wash hands immediately after applying topicals.\r\n* Avoid bathing or steaming after use.\r\n* Be sure to avoid eyes and mouth during and after application.\r\n* Use nonporous gloves to apply topicals for extra precaution.\r\n\r\n### Know Where Your Cannabis Topicals Come From \r\n\r\nTechnically, there really isn’t a cannabis product on the market that can promise it’s completely drug-test safe. Aside from the element of user error, there’s still the issue of product integrity and mis-marketing. As the medical marijuana industry expands, remain diligently educated both on the ingredients of your medicine and their producers. Be conscious of novelty cannabis products, which claim to be completely drug-test resistant. They may very well be safe for drug tests, even if accidentally ingested, but they likely won’t be very effective in easing your pain. \r\n\r\nRELATED: [DIY RECIPE: MARIJUANA INFUSED TOPICAL FOR PAIN RELIEF](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/diy-recipe-marijuana-infused-topical-for-pain-relief)\r\n \r\n### Advice if You’re New to Medical Marijuana\r\n\r\nIf you’re new to medical cannabis, the best rule of thumb is to stay educated. He is also a new contributor to the HelloMD blog, discussing his own experiences with cannabis.\r\n\r\n# Cannabis Solved My Back Pain...Mostly\r\n\r\nThe pain relieving properties of cannabis are remarkable and it is for this reason that I choose cannabis as my 1st line option for combatting chronic back pain. I have experimented with over-the-counter medications in the past like Advil and Tylenol and have even used the prescription medications Flexoril and Zanaflex. They all provided a degree of relief, but due to my lack of enthusiasm for swallowing candy coated pills and a few unpleasant side-effects (ohthe grogginess), I was often left with a partial solution to my back pain problems. Once I made the switch to a cannabis maintenance plan, focusing on some stellar CBD strains, I started getting some real, lasting relief from my pain! And then my muscle tissue lived happily ever after… \r\n\r\nExcept, on some sweaty nights I still found that I woke up with back pain and, much to my concern, even sometimes spinal pain! I racked my brain for the causes... was I hyper extending too much? Not enough stretching? Over time I started to notice two things: The first was that whenever my back hurt the most my lips were very dry. The second was that on my worst days I was waking up with a headache. Quickly, the picture began to become clear. I was finding myself waking up dehydrated! \r\n\r\n# Dehydration: The Culprit in Chronic Pain\r\n\r\nQuickly, I took to the web to confirm my hunch. Article after article confirmed my hypothesis; what a relief I felt knowing that my problem had been identified. Here’s what I found: \r\n\r\n>1.\tYour back has a series of discs in between each vertebra. \r\n2.\tThese discs are the shock absorbers that cushion your bones.\r\n3.\tEach disc is mostly comprised of water.\r\n4.\tIf the disc is dehydrated, then its ability to cushion your vertebra becomes compromised.\r\n5.\tAs a result “pain, swelling, and even ruptures” can occur.\r\n\r\nBefore this, I never realized that dehydration had such an impact on your spinal health. I knew the traditional methods of back care, like a daily walk, plenty of stretching, and good posture, but I had not become aware of the enormous affect water had on my back.\r\n\r\n# Cannabis - Not a Silver Bullet\r\n\r\nOnce I began monitoring my water intake, especially making sure that I was hydrated before bed, I found my spine was more flexible and in general healthier feeling. The whole experience was a great reminder that, although cannabis works wonders with chronic pain, you can’t just rely on a singular fix for your pain. You need to take care of your entire body. After all, it is the only place you have to live!\r\n\r\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Outset focuses on healthy dried fruit edibles dosed in manageable 5mg to 10mg micro serving sizes. In his first post, Nick talks about his journey to health with edibles and his company’s dedication to wellness through yoga + cannabis classes.\r\n\r\n**My Journey into Edibles**\r\n\r\nIf you’ve been to a dispensary, you have seen them, the homemade plastic wrapped cannabis cookie or brownie edible sitting on the display table. They’re sugar laden, improperly labeled and seem designed to put you in a coma if you’re an edibles newbie. After having my own horrible edibles trip, I dreamed of creating a new breed of edibles designed to integrate with a normal every day lifestyle, without causing whole-day-couch-lock. My new-world edible would be micro-dosed, so you wouldn’t need to worry about eating too much. Lastly, my fantasy edible would be healthy, organic, and cater to an active lifestyle community of cannabis consumers. Living in San Francisco, I knew this community existed.\r\n\r\nMy personal mission became to create an all natural, vegan edible that could be easily dosed and enjoyed everyday. After enduring multiple sports injuries, which required numerous knee surgeries, I found myself using too many pharmaceutical prescriptions. Wanting to both alleviate pain as well as stay physically fit, I started looking for pain management alternatives. The result is Outset, the company I created that manufactures a high-quality, low dose (5-10mg per serving) dried fruit edible. I knew if I could support my own physical recovery and mental wellness, hopefully I could help others as well.\r\n\r\n**Cannabis & Yoga Pairing**\r\n\r\nFrom the Outset’s beginning, our team felt passionate about nurturing the mind, body and spirit. Early on we chose to focus on education within the community of wellness minded patients. Several months ago we launched Outset’s first yoga/cannabis focused event to educate patients on specific products and strains of cannabis that pair well with various yoga sequences. Yoga is an amazing practice that seeks to connect the body with the mind. The end goal is not only physical wellness but the relaxation of the mind as well as connection to your inner bliss. The pairing of yoga and cannabis might seem like a bizarre combination, but cannabis and yoga enthusiasts often are seeking the same body-mind-connection result. We believe a yoga/cannabis pairing can display how cannabis consumers can combine a meditative practice with a physical one, such as yoga, while using cannabis.\r\n\r\nFor our first yoga/cannabis event, our focus was on the combination of cannabis with yoga in a comfortable and nurturing environment. Our class, called ‘VinyaSativa’, is a vinyasa flow paired with sativa dominant products meant to energize patients while at the same time creating a sense of equilibrium. The events success led us to create a more relaxed and nurturing sequence. ‘Yindica’, our new restorative yin sequence class, is now on offer and our yogi patients are paired with indica dominant products, which have a more meditative effect overall. \r\n\r\n**Cannabis & Yoga: a San Francisco Vibe**\r\n\r\nOur classes have been extremely well attended and yogis have sung their praises regarding the physical and emotional wellness they feel after a yoga/cannabis pairing event. Many people comment that they feel a deeper relaxation and sense of mental clarity. Our journey has only just begun as we continue to grow our class offering in our continuing community outreach efforts. \r\n\r\nCannabis infused yoga classes hosted by Outset are held at [YogabeachSF](http://www.yogabeachsf.com/) studio in San Francisco, CA. Attendance is open to all California medical cannabis patients who have valid marijuana medical recommendations. Unfortunately, this\ncouldn't be further from the truth. While opioids are effective at\nknocking out pain, they're also some of the most highly addictive and\ndeadly medications currently available to American consumers. In fact,\nopioid medications are so dangerous that they accounted for upwards of\n16,000 deaths in 2009 alone. Using aggregated data from 1 million anonymized\nAmericans, the researchers found that 32 percent of all opioid\nprescriptions in America are being abused. The report also found that\n4.5 percent of people who have a current opioid prescription are abusing\nit, and that these people cost American employers an average as twice as\nmuch (approximately \\$19,450 annually) in medical expense costs as their\nopioid-free counterparts. In addition, baby boomers are nearly four\ntimes as likely to suffer from opioid abuse and addiction as\nmillennials, and patients who live in lower-income areas are twice as\nlikely to suffer from opioid abuse as individuals who live in\nhigher-income areas.\n\nWhile the results of the Castlight report are startling, they're not\nnews to health professionals. The opioid crisis has been ballooning for\nyears, and it has recently gotten so bad that the CDC has declared it a\n[public health crisis](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25581144).\nBecause of the dangerous side effects and highly addictive nature of\nopioid medications, health officials and consumers everywhere are\nactively searching for better alternatives.\n\nCannabis: A Better Way\n----------------------\n\nIn an attempt to mitigate the dangerous effects of opioid\nover-prescription, abuse and addiction, many people are turning to\ncannabis. In addition to the fact that cannabis has a long, demonstrable\nhistory of being used to treat chronic\npain,\ndozens of studies (such as this [2012\nstudy](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22880540) published in the\nJournal of Psychoactive Drugs) have found that cannabis offers fewer\nside effects than opioids and provides more therapeutic benefits than\nsynthetic medication. Recently, prominent politicians such as Elizabeth\nWarren have been [petitioning the\nCDC](http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/feb/12/elizabeth-warren-medical-marijuana-painkiller-opioid-abuse)\nto consider medical cannabis as a supplement to or alternative for\nopioid pain medications, and states like Massachusetts have been using\ncannabis to treat patients suffering from chronic pain and opioid\naddiction. Recently, one clinic in Massachusetts [used medical\ncannabis](http://www.bostonherald.com/news_opinion/local_coverage/2015/10/doctors_pioneer_pot_as_an_opioid_substitute)\nto treat 80 chronic pain sufferers who were addicted to opioid\nmedication. Within a month of treatment, 75 percent of the patients had\ngiven up their opioid medication completely and the vast majority\nreported less pain. Even if cannabis doesn't entirely replace opioid\nmedication in the near future, it's clear that [cannabinoids have a\nsynergistic\neffect](http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1038/clpt.2011.188/abstract)\nthat can help decrease pain while also mitigating the need for high\nlevels of opioid medications.\n\nWhile the solution to the opioid addiction crisis isn't cut-and-dry,\nit's clear that cannabis is a safe, effective alternative that can treat\nchronic pain while also preserving the health and well-being of\npatients.\n\n[Photo Credit](https://www.flickr.com/photos/jamiesrabbits/5748419806/in/photolist-9KY9Wj-aZq5vn-8hUcV6-9KVkMX-8hXs3S-fQQxg6-qhBL-3iTRp-a34Eto-axdEo1-ssbbq-4UiRny-4cjHBA-5WHHQw-6d2W6N-bAuebi-axaWFn-hNn9e-8fEk4y-3b9ZiT-f1uFuv-buQdTs-zpyrgV-7V9E9q-3X849D-8bmupc-3X84Zn-q5ddL-9nrraz-9Q4xGv-5YVmP4-8hUbNz-3XcjJb-9AU6x-8hXqfU-7LHArP-3X7ZVn-K6Vr3-RDsG-8pJqZ-ok8vwv-8WrAcv-6eHN2-cQjmas-dFHZpC-3Sdoa-D3X8F-FqENz-9kC6Km-buQdCq)","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.6129032258064515,"src":"/static/f5cdca97612415ba157e9272fb13aefc/ee604/c821dc4a91ad4a97adbad834f5de004a.png","srcSet":"/static/f5cdca97612415ba157e9272fb13aefc/69585/c821dc4a91ad4a97adbad834f5de004a.png 200w,\n/static/f5cdca97612415ba157e9272fb13aefc/497c6/c821dc4a91ad4a97adbad834f5de004a.png 400w,\n/static/f5cdca97612415ba157e9272fb13aefc/ee604/c821dc4a91ad4a97adbad834f5de004a.png 800w,\n/static/f5cdca97612415ba157e9272fb13aefc/00f5e/c821dc4a91ad4a97adbad834f5de004a.png 1006w","srcWebp":"/static/f5cdca97612415ba157e9272fb13aefc/58556/c821dc4a91ad4a97adbad834f5de004a.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/f5cdca97612415ba157e9272fb13aefc/61e93/c821dc4a91ad4a97adbad834f5de004a.webp 200w,\n/static/f5cdca97612415ba157e9272fb13aefc/1f5c5/c821dc4a91ad4a97adbad834f5de004a.webp 400w,\n/static/f5cdca97612415ba157e9272fb13aefc/58556/c821dc4a91ad4a97adbad834f5de004a.webp 800w,\n/static/f5cdca97612415ba157e9272fb13aefc/7f866/c821dc4a91ad4a97adbad834f5de004a.webp 1006w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2166-markdown","title":"Constance Finley's Story: Treating My Autoimmune Disease with Cannabis Oil","slug":"constance-finleys-story-treating-my-autoimmune-disease-with-cannabis-oil","content":"If you're familiar with Cannabis oils, including those high in CBD and THC, you may also be familiar with Constance Finley of [Constance Therapeutics](http://www.cbdfarm.org/). After grappling with a near-death experience at the hands of prescription drugs used to treat her severe autoimmune disorder, Constance found her way to medical cannabis. Although skeptical at first, she quickly realized that, in addition to managing her pain effectively, medical cannabis drastically improved her quality of life.\r\n\r\nToday, Constance is a leading authority in the CBD/THC oil industry and her company Constance Therapeutics produces the gold standard in whole-plant cannabis extracts. To date, her groundbreaking extracts have helped thousands of people and even a number of household pets. Recently, I interviewed Constance to find out more about how she's revolutionizing cannabis care and what drives her mission.\r\n\r\n**Tell us about your journey and the whole plant cannabis extracts you produce.**\r\n\r\nDue to my autoimmune disease I was housebound for many years. After doing quite a bit of research, I started out making extracts for myself and experimenting from there. Because of my condition, I had to be a fanatic about my health and I was extremely careful about what I put in my body. This is largely why we only use fully trimmed, female unfertilized cannabis sativa flowers of plants with known and controlled genetics and we source all raw materials from either in-house or collaborative farms that ascribe to the terroir philosophy. I needed to know exactly where the materials came from and how they were grown. Our farmers are committed to growing plants sourced from us and using a methodology based on modern biodynamic farming principles. Our focus on quality products doesn’t end there. We only use pharmaceutical grade, certified-organic ethanol for extraction because research has shown that this is the safest of the solvents. \r\n\r\nI am very proud of how far this company has come and believe every cent of the million dollars I have invested in Constance Therapeutics was necessary in order to ensure that we take a science-based approach to product research and development, which includes our patent-pending extraction method. Each step of our extraction process is precisely defined and meticulously measured. We have also implemented extensive standard operating procedures and are currently implementing internationally accepted standards for pharmaceutical companies (ISO 9000) in pursuit of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).\r\n\r\nIt is amazing to think that we started out in my wine cellar and now Constance Therapeutics is located in a biotechnology acceleration campus. Our lab is truly amazing. We have biotech grade hoods for worker safety during chemical analysis and R&D testing, as well as industrial grade fire-safe storage equipment for proper storage, including a fire-safe freezer for ethanol storage to prevent any explosion risk under even extraordinary conditions. I think I am most proud of our rotary evaporator that removes any remaining solvent and preserves terpenes. We also installed state of the art vacuum pumps that are used to separate bioactive and inert components, as well as a chemical laboratory grade air filtration system to remove microbial contaminants and other impurities from the air. Needless to say, purity is a primary concern for me. Finally, we have industry-specific vacuum ovens to optimize aesthetics because aesthetics are important, even when it comes to medicinal cannabis.\r\n\r\nConstance Therapeutics is now a vertically integrated medicinal cannabis company, and we are setting the industry standard for quality, potency and consistency with a new category of treatment options with our whole plant cannabis extracts. Our work is ushering in a new era of care – Care 2.0 – in which whole plant cannabis extracts are integrated into traditional healthcare, providing physicians and their patients with expanded treatment options and filling the gap between traditional pharmaceuticals and commonplace cannabis products.\r\n\r\nIn order for our extracts to actually be considered an integrative option – and possibly even an alternative to pharmaceutical medication – by physicians, we must keep a close eye on quality, potency and consistency. Otherwise it is impossible for physicians to determine proper dosage or monitor for efficacy. We currently work with two great labs to test every lot of our extracts. We check for cannabinoid profile (potency), residual solvents, pesticides, microbial contaminants and aflatoxins. As you can see we have taken many steps to ensure our extracts are the absolute best.\r\n\r\n**You started operating Constance Therapeutics several years ago at a time when it was scary to do so, with changing laws and even government raids. What was it like to produce your product during that time?**\r\n\r\nI dealt with the fear by understanding that my own prejudice against cannabis had shifted and that the world was changing. I basically prayed that the Cosmos would protect me and that cannabis would lend its incredible energy toward that end. My passionate mission to help others has really given me my life back. When I started working with other people and seeing the miraculous results that occurred, I decided to really take this mission seriously. I also decided that there wasn't anything better I could be doing with my life. We decided that the best and most compassionate thing we could do was to take cannabis seriously. We set out to be at the forefront so that, instead of helping just a few people, we can deliver whole plant cannabis extracts to those in need (and in possession of California medical cannabis card, of course), whether that is for something like insomnia or anxiety, or a more serious condition. We would really like to see cannabis become a common tool in a physician’s toolbox.\r\n\r\n**At HelloMD we see that about 60% of patients get their advice from a Bud Tender. If patients come to your collective what kind of guidance will they receive?**\r\n\r\nWhen people come to us they will receive guidance from our member services team. We now have three scientists and a psychologist that work with our members and are available 12 hours each day by phone, email and text. This has helped a seriously ill population embrace cannabinoid therapeutics without concerns about addiction or health risks.\r\n\r\n**If a patient uses your oils, how might they expect to feel?**\r\nIn general, people experience a deep sensation of body relaxation. Patients with more serious conditions often report back that they sleep a lot during the first 2-3 weeks, but this is usually a temporary phase though. We believe that sleep allows for deep healing.\r\n\r\n**How long does treatment typically go on for a patient?**\r\n\r\nIt depends on the patient, but usually a protocol for a cancer patient might last for three to six months. They're usually on a higher dose for two months, but then it is gradually reduced. If they go into remission, then they are switched to a much lower maintenance dosage. If they have gotten good results but no remission, they usually will continue with the higher dose.\r\n\r\n**Cancer patients are a large portion of the patients you see, but you also work with patients with chronic pain, autoimmune diseases and Lyme disease. What's your take on cannabis, chronic paid, autoimmune and Lyme disease?**\r\n\r\nI think in many ways that chronic pain, autoimmune diseases and Lyme disease stand to benefit more directly from cannabis. With these conditions, the rest of your life can be improved with a cannabis regime. Plus, when you find your effective dose in cannabis, it will only come down from that dosage as your condition improves. It is unlikely that you will ever need to increase your dose.\r\n\r\nWe also work with people who have degenerative conditions like Huntington's and Parkinson's. These patients often find fast relief and frequently try CBD-rich extracts rather than those with higher THC levels because, as research indicates, the therapeutic properties of CBD hold great benefit for these types of conditions. However, it is important to note that we advocate that all extracts have some THC in them in order to achieve optimal benefit. Our extracts are based on modern clinical herbalist principles of synergy between plant compounds and scientific research, specifically “The Entourage Effect” theory, which shows that whole plant cannabis extracts from the female cannabis plant (not hemp) are more effective than isolated compounds, such as CBD only.\r\n\r\n**How did you start to provide whole plant cannabis extracts for pets?**\r\n\r\nMany people started to use our extracts on their pets and we noticed that there was a positive impact on many pet’s lives. My own service dog - an 80-pound French Shepherd - developed an aggressive form of cancer. At a certain point I started to give her cannabis extracts as a last hope. She started to do much better and soon after the vets declared her cancer free, about three weeks later. Since that time about 40 dogs and a few cats have come to us through veterinarian referrals. It makes us happy to see the lives of animals being saved or at least improved. Ultimately, we would like to do research in this area as well.\r\n\r\n**Speaking of research, you just announced a new partnership with Gridiron Cannabis Coalition. Can you tell me a little more about that?**\r\n\r\nOh yes. We are very excited about working with GCC. We have partnered with them to advance research on the benefits of whole plant cannabis extracts starting with ex-NFL players suffering from chronic pain. From there, we will move forward with additional studies that focus on other sports-related injuries. As I mentioned, my company is driving a new era of care – Care 2.0 – and that includes care for athletes so that they too have access to the treatment options they need. \r\n\r\n**What inspired you to work with ex-football players specifically?**\r\n\r\nWell, obviously there has been a lot of news lately about Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and the lasting impacts of concussions, largely as a result of the film, 'Concussion', but we actually began this dialogue with GCC in November of last year because I saw a lot of similarities between what the players were going through and my own journey. I had to create my own treatment when pharmaceuticals failed me because there were no other options. \r\n\r\nMy mission is to help people and these NFL players so desperately need help treating the lasting ramifications from the high-impact sport because, as we have seen in the media, all too often the prescription medications they are taking are either leading to addiction or just plain not working for them. We want to embark on scientific research that will clearly show that medicinal cannabis actually can be an option for the issues that NFL-players or any athlete deal with. Our goal is to provide the undeniable evidence needed to change people’s negative perception of cannabis. \r\n\r\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Sava offers next day delivery for patients throughout California and is one of the newest collectives gaining a passionate following of enthusiastic medicinal cannabis patients. Andrea is extremely knowledgeable about how to use cannabis for pain and below she shares her personal story.\r\n\r\n**A Journey from Pain to Wellness**\r\n\r\nMy personal journey into the cannabis industry started with my own pain. Several years ago I was the program director for a San Francisco human and social services nonprofit, doing a job that I absolutely loved, when an injury caused systemic nerve damage and prevented me from being able to sit and use the computer for the long hours required, as well as other routine daily activities. The two years that followed were some of the harder times of my life, while I struggled to find a new way of caring for my body--one that would allow me to be pain free. \r\n\r\nLiving with chronic pain required me to do a lot of research and learning, and a lot of experimentation. I quickly realized that the side effects from pharmaceuticals were best avoided and thus began my trial and error with alternative forms of medicine. I always knew smoking cannabis could alleviate pain, but I’ve since learned that there is so much more to using cannabis than simply picking up a joint. Ultimately, cannabis and a solid self-care routine is what brought me back to health. \r\n\r\n**Beyond the Smoke**\r\n\r\nAt first I turned to smoking flower for pain relief. It did wonders--especially now that there is so much information available on strain types. The only downside of the some of the flower was I felt too high. I wanted to get back to life as usual and although I’ve always enjoyed smoking a joint from time to time, I’ve never been an all day every day smoker. I needed to find a way to manage my pain and stay more clear-minded. \r\n\r\nAs the medical cannabis industry has grown, we’ve seen an explosion in other methods of consumption. Learning about these products gave me a vast toolkit. Edibles and tinctures offer a discreet, easy to measure dose of cannabis available in many configurations. Some are low-dose, some are for sleep, some are high-CBD, and the list goes on. These products have been life-savers. But by far one class of products has helped me day in and day out more than any other is topicals. \r\n\r\n**Topicals - What Are They?**\r\n\r\nTopicals are a way to apply cannabis directly to your skin. Formulas come in many forms including oils, balms, salves, and lotion bars. Topicals are not psychoactive so you will not feel high after using them. \r\n\r\n**How Do They Work?** \r\n\r\nApplying a topical is a transdermal method of ingesting cannabis - meaning it goes through your skin. They work by binding to a network of receptors called CB2 that are found throughout the body and are activated either by the body’s naturally-occurring endocannabinoids or by cannabis compounds known as phytocannabinoids. \r\n\r\nWhen you apply most topicals, the cannabinoids don’t enter the bloodstream so you will not have a psychoactive experience. The two exceptions are with transdermal patches, which will deliver THC to the bloodstream and can cause psychoactive effects and cannabis-infused soaks, which allow THC to be absorbed through the colon. However, with lotions, salves, and the like, you can use them to relieve pain in a specific area while going about your day. \r\n\r\n**Penetration vs. Absorption** \r\n\r\nIn skincare, there is a difference between penetration and absorption. Skin penetration refers to the amount of a topically applied compound that exists between the top layer of skin, the stratum corneum, and the bottom layer of skin, the stratum basale. During penetration, the body does not absorb the compound so it does not affect the body systems. Skin absorption refers to the process where the compound breaks the skin barrier and enters the bloodstream. \r\n\r\nMany factors influence penetration and absorption, including how thick the skin is in the area a formula is applied and the type of formula being applied. Most topicals will not pass the skin barrier and absorb into the bloodstream, but patches, for example, have been made with molecules small enough to do so. \r\n\r\n**Body Oils, Lotions and Salves**\r\n\r\nThrough my experimentation, I found each of these formulas have their own purposes. \r\n\r\nBody Oils - Coupling cannabis with self-massage (or massage from someone else if you’re lucky) can dramatically increase the therapeutic effects. Body oils stay on the skin long enough to provide lubrication for deeper massage, releasing of knots and tension. \r\n\r\nSalves and Balms - These absorb into the skin a bit faster and they are less messy to use, making them my go to for portable relief. Keeping a jar in my purse to apply as needed has been a lifesaver on many occasions. Salves and balms provide enough oil for some massage, but will sink into your skin faster than oil. \r\n\r\nBody Butters - Butters are one step down on the oily scale from salves and balms. Another great choice for relief on the go, body butters made with a natural butter base such as mango, shea, or cocoa. In my experience, the natural butters carry enough scent that they are the predominant smell, not the cannabis. \r\n\r\nLotions - the lightest in texture and oiliness, these will penetrate your skin the fastest. They are not good for massage, but they are great if you want to apply something under your clothes that will leave no mess. \r\n\r\nLotion Bars - lotion bars are solid bars that melt when applied to skin. Often made from a combination of natural butters and oils, these are great for an at home massage treatment. \r\n\r\nSoaks - A newer trend on the cannabis market are bath salts and bath bombs. Fill your tub, add the product, and soak. While you’re relaxing in the tub, the cannabis is penetrating your outer skin layers while also being absorbed by your colon. This leaves you with a very light psychoactive experience that is somewhere between very calm and slightly high. \r\n\r\n**...That Smells Nice**\r\n\r\nSome topicals have stronger cannabis scents than others. There are several options that do not smell like cannabis at all, offering you relief in places where you’d prefer not to unleash the smell of cannabis. Some companies add additional ingredients, such as wintergreen, eucalyptus, and lavender add to the experience. Some topicals are heating and some are cooling. Try a few to find your favorites. \r\n\r\n**What Can I Use Them For?** \r\n\r\nFor Inflammation and Arthritis - CBD has anti-inflammatory properties. If you’d like to combat inflammation or pain related to arthritis, look for a high CBD topical. \r\n\r\nFor Cramps - Topicals calm menstrual cramps. I’ve found body oils to be very effective, especially if applied to both the lower back and lower abdomen and paired with a hot water bottle. \r\n\r\nFor Sore Muscles - Soaking after a workout or self-massage with an oil will leave you less sore the next day. \r\n\r\nFor Better Sleep - a thorough rub down before bed with any topical makes me sleep more soundly. My body relaxes more deeply as I drift off into my dreams. \r\n\r\n**A Self-Care Routine**\r\n\r\nFinding a way to handle pain that didn’t make me high was a game-changer. But cannabis alone is not a magic bullet. Developing a self-care routine was invaluable to my recovery. For some techniques, such as massage, pairing with cannabis magnified the healing effects. \r\n\r\nStretching - Developing a 10-15 minute routine at the beginning and end of your day can make a world of difference. Luckily, the internet abounds with yoga and stretching videos if you’d like inspiration. \r\n\r\nMovement - A vital part of each day, especially if your job requires you to sit in one place. A brief daily walk or getting up once per hour move a bit will make the world of difference. Topical balm can be used in advance of any activity to loosen muscles, as well as be applied afterwards to soothe soreness.\r\n\r\nMassage and other Body Work - Massage alone is magnificently healing. Pairing it with a cannabis brings another level of relaxation. While a professional body worker will reach very deep levels of healing, self-massage on a regular basis is also fantastic. \r\n\r\nMini Foot Spa - While integrating massage into your life is a worthwhile luxury due to the health benefits, it’s not always possible to get a massage. Doing your own mini foot spa is another at-home, accessible self-care routine. Our feet carry so much tension a foot spa can release. Try a cannabis soak and rub some bath salts into your feet to exfoliate. Follow with an oil applied with massage. If you want to take it to another level, look at a reflexology chart and target areas specific to your tension. \r\n\r\nTake A Minute to Breathe - Much like stretching, just a few minutes each day makes a world of difference. While I was initially skeptical, meditation taught me a way to stay grounded during a flare up. I developed a pre-meditation ritual of rubbing some of my favorite scented topical into my temples and neck beforehand, helping me to settle in. \r\n\r\nAs I’ve come to find is often the case for providers of cannabis medicine, it was my own discovery of the vast and varied healing properties of this plant that inspired me to share it with others. In 2015 I founded [Sava](https://www.getsava.com), a marketplace for high-quality, hand-crafted cannabis goods. My hope is to share detailed information on use and dosage with patients while also providing access to safe, consistent medicine. \r\n\r\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. As a result, my normal exercise regime wasn’t an option. So now that I’ve started back up with early morning boot camp and daily hikes, my muscles have been screaming. After my first few days back at it, I can barely walk, feel hobbled and the aching muscles leave me seriously cranky. Could a marijuana topical balm help relieve my tired sore muscles? The answer is, as you may have guessed, yes.\n\n### What Are Cannabis Balms?\n\nMarijuana topicals can come in the form of a salve, cream or even oil. They're meant to be applied to the skin and provide localized relief for pain. Pain may be from nerves, arthritis, inflammation and general soreness, among other conditions. The benefit of a topical for many patients is that it can provide pain relief without creating a sense of being high. \n\nCannabis-infused balms work by absorbing through the skin and binding to our CB2 receptors, which are found throughout the body. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), along with other cannabinoids, have an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect on the body once they come into contact with these receptors. In general, topicals won’t get into the blood stream, which is one of the reasons you don’t get high when using them.\n\nTransdermal patches are another way to administrater medical marijuana. And since transdermals actually do get into the blood stream, they’re somewhat different from topicals.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en) \n\n### My Top 4 Marijuana Topicals\n\nCannabis salves are said to help with sore muscles, back pain, arthritis and many other aches and pains. I’ve used different balms to help me with acute lower back pain, sore muscles, tendonitis and bursitis in my hips. Many marijuana topicals on the market today carry some of the same ingredients found within drugstore muscle creams, including eucalyptus, camphor, menthol and others. \n\nThere are a couple of downsides to using topicals; many smell like cannabis and they can often feel greasy due to their carrier oils. Although there’s little to no research on topicals, anecdotally I found that people who use cannabis topicals uniformly seem to like or love them.\n\nAs you may know, numerous marijuana balms are out on the market, and many that I’ve yet to try. That said, I'm going to tell you about four topicals that I use and like. \n\n### Sweet Releaf Cannabis Body Butter\n\nI’m going to start with this cannabis body butter from [Sweet ReLeaf](https://www.hellomd.com/biz/56dddcac02baab0008000042/sweet-releaf/products), because I absolutely love it. It has a creamy texture, doesn’t smell like cannabis and provides fast relief from sore muscles.\n\nI was barely able to walk after my workout, my quads were so sore, and a colleague at work mentioned this wonder cream. I happened to have a sample size at home, so I popped it open, and with the smallest amount it went straight to work. Within half an hour my pain had decreased significantly.\n\nA 1 oz jar is $20, which may seem pricey, but a little goes a long way. I’m now a huge fan and plan to buy this one in bulk.\n\nA testimonial on the Sweet Releaf site states, “Sweet ReLeaf is the most effective pain-relieving cream I have ever used. The smell is pleasant and enchanting and it has a nice body feel. When I have sore muscles, I rub it in and the pain and discomfort melts away.” I have to say, I back this statement up with my own experience.\n\n### The Original Kind Rub Cannabis Menthol Formula\n\n[The Kind Rub](http://kindmedicineproducts.com/) is a very popular brand I've seen in many dispensaries. I’ve used this balm for some time, and it works well. When my back hurts after a workout, I put some on and find that it definitely lessens the pain.\n\nThat said, the smell of this balm is very powerful—you wouldn’t want to go on a date after using it. It also has a greenish hue that makes me think of the Wicked Witch of the West. This salve has a fantastic ingredient list, which includes eucalyptus, rosemary, sage, lavender and chamomile, among other natural herbs.\n\nOn the product page for this product, Kind Medicine says, “Great for arthritis, bone and muscle pain, backaches, neck aches, gout, chest congestion, sore feet, dry skin, and much more. Apply to the affected area as often as needed. You won’t experience any THC side effects, only the soothing comfort of being free of pain.”\n\n### Xternal Topical Balm\n\nAgain, this seems to be a popular cannabis balm that’s carried by many dispensaries. The packaging feels very generic, but I suppose it’s about what’s inside that matters.\n\nThat said, I’ve carried this in my purse for the past few months. When I’ve had a really sore muscle, it seems to help. It tends to be on the greasier side of topicals, so you need to rub this one in well.\n\nThe Xternal site says it helps combat many conditions and that, “Xternal Balm is a non-petroleum-jelly topical rub with our proprietary active ingredients. This formula was originally designed for MMA fighters who found it greatly improved recovery time.” \n\n### HerbaBuena Body Balm Topical Cannabis Rub\n\nI keep the HerbaBuena body balm on my bedside table. HerbaBuena pays particular attention to the quality of the cannabis it uses, and I appreciate this very much.\n\nThe balm has a very distinctive smell—it’s sort of planty-medicinal, which I happen to like. It has a yellowish hue and feels a bit grainy, so you also need to really rub it in before you can put clothes on over it. The jar’s description states that it contains 1,000 mg of THC, so a little goes a long way.\n\nOn the HerbaBuna site, it says, “Our proprietary blend of oils eases all types of muscle and joint pain, and has been reported to be particularly effective as a sports rub and for assisting with arthritis. Starring critically extracted cannabis as well as oils of coconut, jojoba and avocado, cacao butter and beeswax.”\n\nHopefully this list gives you a good place to start if you want to explore how marijuana topicals can help your sore muscles. A medicine designed to help patients deal with pain from illnesses and injuries has turned into something more dangerous than health experts ever anticipated. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), up to [25% of people](https://www.cdc.gov/drugoverdose/data/overdose.html) who receive prescription opioids for non-cancer-related primary care become addicted to the substance, with drugs like methadone, oxycodone and hydrocodone being the most commonly abused.\r\n\r\nThe statistics are alarming and frightening. Finally, the medical industry is taking steps to curb the opioid addiction epidemic. The CDC is urging doctors and health professionals to be very cautious when prescribing painkillers and recommends they avoid it altogether for certain patients’ chronic pain treatment.\r\n\r\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en) \r\n\r\n### What Does the New Opioids Guidance Mean for Patients?\r\n\r\nWith the exception of those receiving end-of-life treatment or cancer care, doctors are now advised to, if possible, simply not prescribe opiates to patients with chronic pain or those suffering from injuries. Although the CDC recognizes that there are some situations in which the benefits of opioids outweigh the risks, current [CDC guidelines](https://www.cdc.gov/drugoverdose/pdf/guideline_infographic-a.pdf) recommend that doctors try other drugs, such as anti-inflammatories, as first-line treatments before prescribing opiates for pain relief. The CDC also recommends starting with a low dose of opioids and building up to a dose that’s effective at relieving pain, rather than immediately prescribing a high dose.\r\n\r\nMany in the medical industry believe that the risk of opioid addiction outweighs the benefit of temporary pain relief. After all, the numbers don't lie; painkillers are deadly and are currently abused by [nearly two million people](https://www.health.harvard.edu/newsletter_article/painkillers-fuel-growth-in-drug-addiction). There’s no reason to risk the lives of patients just so they can be more comfortable.\r\n\r\nThough doctors are under no legal obligation to follow such directives, what the CDC says carries a great deal of weight in the health care industry, and this instruction will undoubtedly lead to a significant reduction in prescriptions for painkillers to manage chronic pain.\r\n\r\nHowever, the directive does add that, when benefits are greater than risks, it's OK to prescribe opiates. Health professionals are strongly advised to talk to patients about using the painkiller and identify the potential of a substance abuse disorder. Exploring alternatives, such as holistic therapies, exercise and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicine, such as aspirin, is another option.\r\n\r\n### Could Medical Marijuana Be a Better Solution Than Opioids?\r\n\r\nJust because doctors won't be prescribing painkillers as much doesn't mean people have to struggle through life. In addition to exercising, eating well and using holistic healing measures, medical marijuana represents a capable and safe alternative to painkillers.\r\n\r\nStereotypes surrounding the drug may turn some folks in the health care industry off, but research is proving that patients benefit from the use of this medicinal plant. Specifically, a comprehensive study undertaken by HelloMD of a community of patients using medical marijuana revealed very promising results on the effectiveness of marijuana as a medicine. Eighty-four percent of [survey respondents](https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/hellomd-news/HelloMD_Medical_Marijuana_Patient_Survey.pdf) claim that medical marijuana is extremely effective in relieving their symptoms. Many also reported using the drug to treat other health symptoms, including anxiety, insomnia, nausea, mental health disorders and stress.\r\n\r\n### Medical Marijuana Is Effective at Treating Chronic Pain Symptoms\r\n\r\nPatients are using medical marijuana for a variety of reasons and are reporting excellent results. The survey by HelloMD found that 84% of patients using medical marijuana said that cannabis offered them relief from their symptoms. As well, very few reported negative consequences when using cannabis for medicinal purposes. In fact, 96% of respondents said they’d recommend it to a family member, friend or colleague in need. In short, patients see improvement when they use medical cannabis, with little to no side effects or other issues. That can't be said for prescription painkillers, which—as the research proves—leads to a high rate of addiction and many deaths.\r\n\r\n### You Don’t Have to Smoke Medical Marijuana \r\n\r\nSome may be turned off by the fact that marijuana is traditionally ingested by smoking the plant, but that isn't the only method of ingestion. HelloMD discovered that many women and older people, for instance, preferred topical creams and fragrance products. Younger males, on the other hand, chose to smoke and vape. Folks in the industry are inventing new ways to take cannabis every day—with edibles, tinctures, oils and capsules—to suit any preference; patients aren't forced to inhale. Additionally, doses can be adjusted to meet individual needs.\r\n\r\n### Medical Marijuana Won’t Lead to Overdoses\r\n\r\nUnlike opioids, it’s very hard to overdose on medical marijuana. In fact, it has [never been shown](http://www.drugwarfacts.org/chapter/overdose#%20sthash.SjSqCr2X.dpbs) that marijuana alone has caused an overdose. Overdose amounts suggested by some scientists are so high that it would be impossible for anyone to take that much. Hence, cannabis is a safe solution.\r\n\r\nOpioid overdoses tragically claim many lives. They also pose huge costs to ER departments, who must administer emergency treatments to quickly counteract the effects of the drugs taken. Reducing the rate of overdose could therefore have many important benefits for society.\r\n\r\nFor those suffering with chronic pain, finding a safe and effective way to improve overall well-being is a priority. The danger of prescription painkillers is all too real. Medical marijuana has been shown to be [safer than alcohol and tobacco](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56e884c21e4e2b000800001a/marijuana-is-safer-than-alcohol-and-tobacco-study-finds)—two completely legal substances. Additionally, marijuana carries [little risk of dependence](https://www.healthline.com/health-news/marijuana-addiction-rare-but-real-072014), a characteristic other drugs can't claim.\r\n\r\nSimply put, if health care professionals want a worthy and safe alternative to prescription opioids, the solution is to go green. Go for medical marijuana.\r\n\r\nPhoto Credit: [Army Medicine](https://www.flickr.com/people/armymedicine/)\r\n\r\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Here's what you need to know:\n\n**Cannabis as a Treatment for Glioma**\n\n[Glioma](http://www.abta.org/brain-tumor-information/types-of-tumors/glioma.html)\nis a form of cancer that develops in the supportive tissue of the human\nbrain. This tissue is designed to enhance neuron function and when a\ntumor begins to grow within it, the affected person experiences nausea,\nheadaches, vision changes, altered behavior and personality changes.\nPatients affected by glioma are subject to a bleak [5 percent survival\nrate](http://brain.oxfordjournals.org/content/130/10/2596) over three\nyears.\n\nUntil now, the treatment options for glioma have been limited to surgery\nand chemotherapy in the event of high-grade tumors. Today, however, this\nmay be changing. According to a [2014\nstudy](http://mct.aacrjournals.org/content/early/2014/11/12/1535-7163.MCT-14-0402.abstract)\nconducted by oncologist Wai Lu at St. George's University of London,\ncannabinoids like THC and CBD are highly efficient at destroying glioma\ncells. During a clinical study, Lu found that CBD and THC alone were\ncapable of killing roughly half of the glioma cells present in affected\nmice. When these cannabinoids were used in conjunction with\nradiotherapy, however, the treatment caused the tumors in several of the\nmice to stop growing entirely.\n\nAdditionally, Lu found that when THC and CBD were used together to treat\ntumors, researchers could use less of each compound and still achieve\nthe same effects. This is important because THC is psychoactive and can\ncause unwanted psychoactive side effects for people receiving treatment.\nFortunately, when combined with CBD, THC can be used in smaller doses\nand patients receiving treatment can reap the medical benefits of the\ncompound without any of the \"high\" feelings traditionally associated\nwith it.\n\n**How Cannabis Works to Treat Brain Cancer**\n\nWhile the results of Lu's study are exciting, researchers are still\nworking to figure out how, exactly, THC and CBD are producing these\neffects. According to Lu, the answer may be that the cannabinoids are\npreparing neural pathways for radiotherapy. \"We think that the\ncannabinoids are hitting a number of cell signaling pathways, which\nprimes them to the effects of irradiation,\" [Lu\nsays](http://www.medicaldaily.com/cannabis-shrinks-brain-tumors-associated-highly-aggressive-form-cancer-310720).\nOnce the cells have been primed, the ability of a tumor cell to rebuild\nitself is damaged and the tumor cells die as a result. The outstanding\nthing about this treatment, however, is that while THC and CBD have been\nshown to kill glioma cells, they don't produce any negative effects in\nthe healthy cell tissue surrounding the glial cells. In fact,\ncannabinoids may even [protect these\ncells](http://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/treatment/cam/hp/cannabis-pdq# cit/section_4.3)\nfrom damage.\n\nWhile the results of Lu's study are particularly exciting given the\naggressive and often-fatal nature of glioma, this is not the first\nevidence researchers have of cannabis being used to treat different\nforms of cancer. Cannabis contains upward of 85 different cannabinoids,\nand [previous\nstudies](http://www.nature.com/nrc/journal/v3/n10/abs/nrc1188.html) have\nshown that these cannabinoids are capable of killing various types of\ncancer cells. This research has given scientists a place to start when\nevaluating the use of CBD and THC for cancer treatment.\n\n**Marijuana and Cancer Prevention**\n\nIn addition to the recent findings that cannabinoids may be an effective\ntreatment for glioma, researchers have discovered over the years that\nmarijuana may also have powerful anti-tumor effects, which could stop\ncancer from ever forming in the first place. While the research isn't\nnew, it paved the way for further evaluations of the connection between\ncannabis and cancer. In one [1996\nstudy](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12594529?dopt=Abstract),\nresearchers found that lab mice given doses of THC over a two-year\nperiod experienced a decrease in the rate of certain cancers and benign\ntumors in areas such as the pancreas, uterus, testes and mammary tissue.\n\nMore recent research has shed some light on how cannabis produces these\neffects. According to a [2014\nstudy](http://www.jbc.org/content/early/2014/06/18/jbc.M114.561761)\npublished in the *Journal of Biological Chemistry*, THC acts on\ncannabinoid cell receptors to inhibit the interactions between them,\nthus decreasing the risk that cancer will form or interrupting cancer\nthat is already growing. Further research has shown that THC is capable\nof [decreasing the rate of lung cancer cell\ngrowth](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/04/070417193338.htm)\nby 50 percent as well as preventing pre-existing cancer from\nmetastasizing throughout the body. Studies have also shown that cannabis\nis capable of [killing brain cancer\ncells](http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/279571.php). The\nanti-cancer benefits of cannabis are extensive and clearly noted, and,\nwhen used correctly, can help providers offer powerful cancer treatment\nwithout the dangerous and uncomfortable side-effects present in other\ntreatment options.\n\n**Moving Forward: The Future of Marijuana and Glioma**\n\nLu's 2014 study was groundbreaking in the world of glioma research and,\nwhile further research is needed to put his findings into action on a\nlarge scale, it's clear that cannabis may be more powerful than\nresearchers previously thought when it comes to treating aggressive\nforms of cancer. In addition to offering relief from many of the\nsymptoms associated with cancer and cancer treatment (such as [nausea,\nvomiting, pain and decreases in\nappetite](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/561ee4573632300006190100/medical-marijuana-helps-treat-undesired-effects-of-chemotherapy)),\ncannabis also boasts an extensive list of anti-tumor and cancer-treating\nproperties. These properties present huge opportunities for treatment to\ncancer patients and their families, and have the potential to alter the\nface of cancer treatment forever.\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3513513513513513,"src":"/static/3b881ad8d7a43397bc09a6cce0a9a75a/ee604/88557aa08f08fb0274bedc1684304a23.png","srcSet":"/static/3b881ad8d7a43397bc09a6cce0a9a75a/69585/88557aa08f08fb0274bedc1684304a23.png 200w,\n/static/3b881ad8d7a43397bc09a6cce0a9a75a/497c6/88557aa08f08fb0274bedc1684304a23.png 400w,\n/static/3b881ad8d7a43397bc09a6cce0a9a75a/ee604/88557aa08f08fb0274bedc1684304a23.png 800w,\n/static/3b881ad8d7a43397bc09a6cce0a9a75a/f3583/88557aa08f08fb0274bedc1684304a23.png 1200w,\n/static/3b881ad8d7a43397bc09a6cce0a9a75a/af768/88557aa08f08fb0274bedc1684304a23.png 1268w","srcWebp":"/static/3b881ad8d7a43397bc09a6cce0a9a75a/58556/88557aa08f08fb0274bedc1684304a23.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/3b881ad8d7a43397bc09a6cce0a9a75a/61e93/88557aa08f08fb0274bedc1684304a23.webp 200w,\n/static/3b881ad8d7a43397bc09a6cce0a9a75a/1f5c5/88557aa08f08fb0274bedc1684304a23.webp 400w,\n/static/3b881ad8d7a43397bc09a6cce0a9a75a/58556/88557aa08f08fb0274bedc1684304a23.webp 800w,\n/static/3b881ad8d7a43397bc09a6cce0a9a75a/99238/88557aa08f08fb0274bedc1684304a23.webp 1200w,\n/static/3b881ad8d7a43397bc09a6cce0a9a75a/3938f/88557aa08f08fb0274bedc1684304a23.webp 1268w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_1957-markdown","title":"Menstrual Cramps Be Damned with New Cannabis Vaginal Suppository","slug":"menstrual-cramps-be-damned-with-new-cannabis-vaginal-suppository","content":"[Foria](http://foriapleasure.com/) is one of the most exciting companies within the cannabis industry. If you have not heard of their new product [Foria Relief](http://foriapleasure.com/products/relief-4-pack), and you are a woman, I would encourage you to keep reading. This past week Foria launched Foria Relief, a cocoa butter-based vaginal cannabis suppository designed to ease menstrual cramps in women. According to Brittany Confer, the Director of Communications for the company “Relief has been carefully crafted and is intended to maximize the muscle relaxing and pain relieving properties of cannabis without inducing a psychotropic ‘high’. What’s nice about Relief is how it can create a full body sensation of relaxation without delivering the ‘head high’.”\n\nWhat’s interesting to note about the launch of this product and Foria as a company is that it is the only company in the industry seeming to be laser focused on women’s sexual health through the use of non-psychoactive medicinal products. They have successfully navigated a divergent path of both pleasure and pain. Their flagship product [Foria Pleasure](http://foriapleasure.com/pages/about-us) increases sexual pleasure through the use of a THC infused lubricant spray, whereas Foria Relief focuses on diminishing pain generally associated with menstruation, and other related sexual health issues for women. \n\nForia as a company started in California about two years ago with the idea to create a sexual enhancement product for women as an aide to overall health and wellness. Co-founder Mathew Gerson, a veteran of the sex industry and founder of Sir Richard’s Condoms, noted at the time that there were around 26 FDA-approved drugs on the market for increasing male sexual pleasure, but approximately zero available for women. Excited to start a new venture, he began researching how he might enable women to find the same sexual satisfaction through a product formulated with all natural ingredients. During a conversation about CBD health benefits, he stumbled upon cannabis and recalled its historical use by women as a sexual health aid in ancient cultures. Foria Pleasure was born, and the sexual lubricant spray hit the market sparking ladies libidos across the state of California and shortly there after Colorado. \n\n[CANNABIS 101 - THC VS CBD](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-thc-vs-cbd)\n\nThe company traversed the line from pleasure to the diminishment of pain organically a little over a year ago. A well-known Beverly Hills urologist, Dr. Jennifer Berman, began to notice multiple patients within her medical practice discussing Foria Pleasure. The first patient to bring it up was a 75 year old woman who told Dr. Berman she was not only enjoying sex for the first time in years, but was noticeably feeling pain free. Remarkably, more and more patients came in talking about Foria Pleasure discussing how the product not only increased sexual pleasure but also decreased pain associated with other sexual health issues, including PMS and endometriosis. The trend became so prominent that Dr. Berman contacted Foria to discuss women’s sexual health and how the product could further service a population of women who desire sexual pleasure, however needed access to a more effective pain reliever. Foria Relief was conceived through these initial conversations and rapid iterations of research and development began.\n\nForia Relief is inserted vaginally and is absorbed directly into the bloodstream. The medicine contains CBD as well as THC, yet patients will not feel a ‘head high’. Although the product contains the psychoactive cannabinoid THC, the patient will feel a generalized relaxation across the body rather than feeling stoned. Brittany says about Relief “The suppository does not give you a head high, although it contains psychoactive properties, so normal daily activities are not interrupted. Depending on the person, it can give a full body sensation; it makes the body and mind relax, a little giggly and generally more at ease. I often describe my personal experience with Relief similar to a three-way cross between Xanax, a muscle relaxer and a pain pill - except no pharmaceuticals are involved! The body high is subtle, but noticeable - not like smoking cannabis. Foria Relief helps to soothe painful period cramps as well as a host of other pelvic pain-related issues for people who haven’t been able to find relief elsewhere.”\n\nSpeaking from personal experience, Foria Relief provided me with better pain relief than any other cannabis product I have tried to date. Given that I am working within the cannabis industry, it is not a stretch to say I have tried many different products. On the day I tried Foria Relief, I was experiencing noticeable back pain. After inserting the suppository I felt very relaxed within 30 minutes and my back spasm was undetectable within the hour. Additionally, during my cycle I almost always experience at least one migraine. At the onset of a recent migraine I took my second dose of Foria Relief. To my surprise, the migraine went away completely in about an hour and the feeling of full body relaxation lasted for upwards of 6 hours. Although everyone reacts differently to cannabis, my experience was that it is the first medication that fully addresses the type of pain I experience, giving me both relief and a feeling of happy relaxation; all without the feeling of a head high. In other words, I could go about my business and even stay focused at work. It is also important to note that I am incredibly sensitive to the effect of THC and at a whopping 60mg per dose, I was not only functional but feeling great.\n\n[ORGANIC OR SYNTHETIC CBD - WHICH IS BEST?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/565f3c35d031520008000000/organic-or-synthetic-cbd-which-is-best)\n\nForia Relief is sold for $44 (4-pk) and $22 (2-pk). Patients receive a small instruction booklet inside of a reusable tin where each suppository contains 60mg of THC and 10mg of CBD. According to Confer, “We encourage patients to experiment to find the correct dosage that works for their individual body. We say that one suppository is one dose and that you should consider using the first suppository on the first day of cramping even if bleeding has not yet occurred. Relief is usually absorbed in 15-20 minutes and the effects can be felt for up to 4-5 hours. One to two suppositories may be sufficient on the two worst days of your cycle. Typically, research shows that women have extreme pain for only two of days during their period cycle.” \n\nTo buy Foria Relief you can purchase from their online cannabis collective within their [Foria](http://foriapleasure.com/products/relief-4-pack) site and/or at various dispensary locations across California. You must obtain a state-issued medical marijuana recommendation in order to purchase in California.
