But as we learn more about marijuana, interest in other cannabinoids, like tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV), is on the rise.\n\nRecently, THCV has been garnering some interest due to its reported ability to suppress appetite and lessen some of THC’s psychoactive effects. But the cannabinoid may be able to do more than that: THCV’s ability to influence the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system may make it useful in the treatment of certain conditions like:\n\n* Parkinson’s disease\n* Obesity and type 2 diabetes \n* Osteoporosis\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### How THCV Can Affect the Endocannabinoid System \n\nSimilar to your body’s naturally occurring endocannabinoids, phytocannabinoids produced by the cannabis plant work on the [endocannabinoid system](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5751cbd970410e000b00003a/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system), a network of receptors located throughout the body. Currently, we know of two receptors in this system: CB1 and CB2.\n\nCB1 is most prevalent in the brain and spinal cord, though it’s also found throughout the body. CB2 is often found in immune cells, the gastrointestinal system and as we continue to learn more, the skeletal system. Research on the CB2 receptor suggests that influencing it with medications could [regulate inflammation throughout the body](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5075023/).\n\nJust as endocannabinoids attach to the CB1 and CB2 receptors, the compounds in cannabis— THC, CBD and THCV—are also able to attach to or influence these receptors. Much of the research surrounding THCV says that in the right amounts, [it’s a CB1 antagonist and a CB2 agonist](https://bpspubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1038/sj.bjp.0706414).\n\nIn other words, THCV can attach to the CB1 receptor and keep other molecules from binding to it; and it can attach to the CB2 receptor to bring about certain effects. In late-stage Parkinson’s, where characteristic symptoms like tremors and rigidity appear, there’s an increase in CB1 receptor density and activity.\n\nIn addition, inflammation in the brain can further worsen the disease, which is why researchers think that [influencing the CB2 receptor](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0278584615000664), which plays a role in our body’s inflammatory response, could help slow or even reverse the disease. \n\nGiven what researchers know about CB1 overactivity in Parkinson’s patients coupled with CB2’s ability to alleviate inflammation, THCV seems like a good therapeutic fit: It can stop substances from binding to CB1 and reduce overactivity. It can also activate CB2 and maybe even ease inflammation.\n\nIn a study published in 2016 in the _British Journal of Pharmacology_, scientists tested the effects of THCV in rats with Parkinson’s disease. They found that [the cannabinoid improved motor function and had a protective effect on brain cells](https://bpspubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/j.1476-5381.2011.01278.x). \n\nThey hypothesized that these effects were due to THCV’s antioxidant properties and its ability to attach to CB2. Overall, with more research they concluded that THCV could be useful in slowing progression and reducing symptoms of Parkinson’s.\n\n### THCV May Help Diabetics Control Their Blood Sugar Levels  \n\nInsulin is a hormone that controls the amount of glucose, a simple sugar, that’s in your blood. WIth type 2 diabetes, the body either doesn’t respond properly to insulin, or it doesn’t make enough of it. This leads to high levels of glucose in the blood, also known as high blood sugar. There’s no definitive cause for type 2 diabetes, but contributing factors may include obesity and lack of exercise.\n\nA 2013 study on obese mice found that [THCV could control blood sugar and make the body properly respond to insulin](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3671751/). The study’s researchers speculate that the cannabinoid was able to do this by binding to CB1 receptors. That said, they say more research is needed because there could be other factors at play. \n\n[THC and CBD both show potential in helping those with type 2 diabetes manage their blood sugar levels](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5ae8fa71049b4f000a64e944/how-marijuana-may-help-manage-diabetes-onset-and-severity). However, THCV may show the most promise: It actually went through a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with good results. In the study, which was published in _Emerging Technologies and Therapeutics_, researchers found [THCV reduced glucose levels](http://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/39/10/1777), while also improving the function of beta-cells, which make the hormone insulin.\n\n### THCV May Reduce Bone Loss  \n\nOsteoporosis is a disease that occurs when your body makes too little bone tissue, loses too much bone mass, or both. Though there are no studies directly showing that THCV can help with osteoporosis, research on the CB2 receptor suggests that THCV may have therapeutic potential. \n\nCB2 has been found on cells that make bone tissue and also on cells that reabsorb bone, prompting scientists to speculate that CB2 regulates bone mass. So far, studies on both mice and humans seem to say that this is true. \n\nMice who are deficient in CB2 receptors tend to lose bone tissue more quickly than their healthy counterparts do. And in humans, researchers have looked at variations in the gene that codes for the CB2 receptor. They found that people with two particular variations in this gene were more likely to have osteoporosis. \n\nThough we still don’t fully understand the role of the CB2 receptor in bone health, substances that attach to it may help those with osteoporosis. Indeed, researchers have already tested compounds that have an affinity for the receptor, and they’ve found that these substances can reduce bone loss. One of these types of conditions that receives a lot of attention is Parkinson’s disease, a disorder that affects the part of the brain where dopamine is made. \r\n\r\nDopamine is responsible for relaying messages in the brain that have to do with mood, behavior, sleep and cognition. In Parkinson’s disease, the cells in your brain that make dopamine slowly die off, reducing the overall amount of dopamine available to carry out normal functions. As these dopamine-making cells die, proteins build up inside of them, further worsening the disease. \r\n\r\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\r\n\r\n### Anecdotal Reports Abound on Cannabis Helping Ease Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease\r\n\r\nMedical marijuana occasionally makes an appearance on educational materials about Parkinson’s disease. There have been anecdotal reports from patients that the plant can help ease various symptoms such as anxiety, depression, muscle rigidity, pain and insomnia. These reports come as no surprise to many of those in the medical marijuana community, even if science has yet to conclusively prove them to be true. \r\n\r\nGiven the myriad reports of cannabis’s benefits from Parkinson’s disease patients, have there been any studies conducted on the matter? [Marijuana has been shown to have neuroprotective qualities in a few animal studies](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17672854), but very few clinical studies have been conducted involving humans.\r\n\r\n### Clinical Study Fails to Find CBD an Effective Treatment for Parkinson’s Disease\r\n\r\nOne such study comprised [the largest double-blind exploratory trial on Parkinson’s to date](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25237116). And yet the study was actually quite small, consisting of three groups with seven subjects each.\r\n\r\nEach group was given one of the following: a placebo; 75 mg of cannabidiol (CBD) a day; or 300 mg of CBD a day for six weeks. For the placebo and 300 mg CBD groups, the researchers saw a significant improvement in functioning and well-being, but no difference in motor issues associated with Parkinson’s disease.\r\n\r\nRELATED: [HOW CANNABIDIOL, OR CBD, CAN HELP WITH PARKINSON’S DISEASE](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a999166f24d1300077ccb6c/how-cannabidiol-or-cbd-can-help-with-parkinsons-disease)\r\n\r\nA few patients with Parkinson’s disease have anecdotally stated online that cannabis helps with motor dysfunction. This study didn’t corroborate these reports, but there could be many reasons why: “It could have been because the sample size was too small or the [CBD] dosage wasn’t the amount needed to yield any significant improvement,” says [Dr. Perry Solomon](https://www.hellomd.com/people/54cc02df6465320003000000/Perry%20Solomon,%20MD), HelloMD’s chief medical officer. \r\n\r\n“These findings don’t mean that cannabis can’t help with Parkinson’s. It’s just that this study wasn’t able to prove the efficacy of cannabis in treating the symptoms of this disease,” he adds. More recently, though, numerous studies from around the world are revealing that far from destroying brain cells, compounds in cannabis are both uniquely able to protect them and support the growth of new ones.\n\nNow, this new research shows that the [potent neuroprotective properties of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and other cannabis compounds](http://norml.org/component/zoo/category/cannabis-and-the-brain-a-user-s-guide) may offer new hope for treating not only brain injury and neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis, but also Alzheimer’s and aggressive cancers in the brain and body.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Marijuana Compounds Protect the Brain & Nerves in Many Ways\n\nNeuroprotectants are agents that help to reduce damage to the brain and nervous system caused by injury, exposure to toxins, or inflammatory processes or disease states in the body. These agents also encourage the growth and development of new neurons. Neuroprotectants take many forms, ranging from vitamins and synthetic drugs to herbs and natural substances such as marine algae.\n\nNow, a variety of studies indicate that cannabis may be among the most powerful of these, thanks to its action on the body’s cannabinoid receptors and [its own anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties](https://echoconnection.org/cbd-has-antioxidant-and-neuroprotective-properties-what-does-that-mean).\n\nNeurological damage can come from direct injury, such as in head trauma or a stroke. It can be caused by exposure to toxic substances, including alcohol and nicotine, or by various processes that damage the protective sheaths surrounding nerves or the nerve cells themselves.\n\nBut the cannabis compounds cannabidiol (CBD) and THC can protect against many causes of nerve damage and help repair damage once it happens by preventing inflammation; stimulating the growth of new, healthy cells; and encouraging the death of malignant ones.  \n\nThe endocannabinoid system (ECS) is an extensive network of receptors primed to respond both to cannabinoid substances naturally produced by the body and to cannabinoids from outside sources, most notably cannabis itself. The ECS is directly or indirectly responsible for supporting a variety of systems and processes in the brain and many organs and tissues; this helps explain why [cannabis can have such a wide range of neuroprotective effects](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10863546). \n\n### Cannabis Supports Healing From Brain Trauma & Injury\n\nThe brain can be injured in a variety of ways. Stroke is caused either by a burst blood vessel or a blockage in a blood vessel, so that neurons controlling various functions such as memory or coordination are damaged and die. Traumatic brain injury is caused by an impact to the head, which can lead to brain swelling and bleeding—and the subsequent damage and death of cells in the area.\n\nIn a variety of studies, cannabis has been shown to reduce the damage to brain cells caused by these kinds of events. But [cannabis is also capable of encouraging the growth of new brain cells](https://www.jci.org/articles/view/25509)—a process called neurogenesis that until recently seemed impossible under any circumstances. \n\n### Cannabis Fights the Effects of Neurotoxins on Brain Cells\n\nNeurotoxins—substances capable of causing neurological damage—come in a variety of forms, such as industrial solvents, pesticides, certain kinds of drugs as well as the more familiar alcohol and nicotine. These substances can damage or kill brain cells that govern memory, movement and other processes. [Cannabis, particularly the compound CBD, appears to be able to protect nerve cells](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15837565C) against inflammation caused by toxic substances, particularly the brain damage that can accompany chronic alcohol abuse.  \n\n### Cannabis Eases Symptoms of Neurological Disorders\n\n[Cannabis shows promise in treating the symptoms of serious neurological disorders](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0022510X05000778) such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and amyotropic lateral sclerosis, or ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease). These and other neurological problems typically involve inflammatory processes that disrupt the regulation of neurotransmitters in the brain and cause problems with movement and coordination.  \n\nCannabis compounds, especially CBD, have both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can help regulate the production of dopamine and other neurotransmitters, and reduce the severity of symptoms related to these kinds of disorders.\n\n### THC Fights Cancers of the Brain\n\nMuch of the research on the neuroprotective properties of cannabis has focused on CBD, which is non-psychoactive and strongly associated with supporting immune system functions and fighting inflammation. But psychoactive THC from the natural cannabis plant also has a role to play in protecting vulnerable cells—and, perhaps, in fighting some of the most aggressive and often untreatable cancers of the brain and other parts of the body.\n\nGlioma is a fast-growing, aggressive and mostly fatal kind of cancer that forms in the glial cells of the brain and, sometimes, the spinal cord. Because glioma is frequently inoperable, treatment options can be limited.\n\nBut [recent studies on the effects of cannabis on glioblastoma cell lines](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16078104?dopt=Citation) reveals that THC not only decreased the proliferation of malignant glial cells, it also triggered a process called apoptosis, or programmed cell death. In this process, THC was able to selectively target only the malignant cells, while ignoring the healthy ones. These preliminary findings support other research showing that cannabis may be able to target tumor development in the lungs, breast and other areas of the body.\n\n### A New Approach for Treating Alzheimer’s Disease\n\nOne of the [most promising areas for research on the neuroprotective properties of cannabis](https://www.alzheimers.net/6-15-15-effects-of-medical-marijuana-on-alzheimers/) comes in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease—a progressive form of dementia believed to be caused by the buildup of proteins called beta amyloid plaque in the brain. A recent study sponsored by the Salk Institute reveals that a different process may be at work—and cannabis is uniquely positioned to affect it.\n\nThe Salk study found that inflammation caused by plaque occurs in cells themselves, and cannabinoid-like compounds manufactured by those cells may prevent them from damage and death. Neurotransmitters carry messages throughout your body via electrical and chemical signals; it’s through these signals that your brains receives the instructions to carry out everyday activities. \n\nDopamine regulates mood, behavior, sleep and cognition. In Parkinson’s disease, the brain cells that make dopamine progressively stop working, and as these cells die, protein bundles build up inside of them, causing inflammation and further compounding the disease. Thus, it’s no surprise that Parkinson’s patients experience hardship in these key life mechanisms; hardships that can diminish their quality of life. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nTo find a cure—or at least slow the disease’s progression, researchers are taking a closer look at cannabidiol (CBD), a chemical compound found in the cannabis plant.  \n\n### CBD May Help Relieve the Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease\n\nSmall studies have found that CBD, which has little to no psychoactivity, can help [psychosis](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18801821) and [improve sleep quality](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24845114) in Parkinson’s disease patients. As well, anecdotal evidence indicates CBD may provide far-reaching symptom relief. \n\nIt’s not surprising that many patients report that CBD alleviates their symptoms: Among those in the medical marijuana community, CBD is known to help ease anxiety, depression, insomnia, muscle rigidity and pain—all of which are associated with Parkinson’s disease or are side effects of medications involved in a traditional treatment regimen for the disease.\n\nA small double-blind exploratory trial consisting of 21 Parkinson’s disease patients found that [participants who took 300 mg of CBD a day had higher quality of life scores](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25237116), as opposed to those taking the placebo dose. While these results were vague and the study group small, the study nevertheless indicates that CBD could be beneficial, and should serve as encouragement for future studies. \n\nSome folks with Parkinson’s have already caught on to CBD’s benefits. [Jan Lavelle](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/57a7cefba123030007ba033a/how-cannabis-helped-me-find-relief-from-parkinsons-disease) is a wellness consultant who was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson’s disease at age 44; she takes a CBD tincture three times a day.\n\n“When people see me, and they find out that I've had Parkinson’s for eight years, they always say it doesn't seem like it,” she says.\n\nJan credits her CBD regimen in helping with her movement, relaxing her muscles and easing pain. Jan takes CBD like you would a supplement—half a dropperful of an 8:1 CBD to THC tincture, under the tongue, three times a day. \n\n“It took me probably a month or so just to get it in my system. I didn't feel it right away,” she says. Researchers are looking at CBD’s anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties in hopes of alleviating symptoms and perhaps even slowing, stopping and reversing disease progression.\n\n“The most promising aspect of cannabis to help Parkinson's patients, as well as any other neurodegenerative disease, lies in the plant’s anti-inflammatory properties, which impart nerve protection and possible reduction of amyloid buildup in brain cells,” says Dr. Perry Solomon, HelloMD’s chief medical officer.\n\nAmyloid is a protein that’s normally found throughout the body, but in Alzheimer’s disease it divides improperly, forming plaque in the brain that interferes with cerebral function. Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s share common characteristics like the buildup of proteins in the brain, and it’s thought that some drugs that treat Alzheimer’s could also help Parkinson’s patients.\n\nDr. Solomon points to lab research in mice that used a combination of [tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and CBD to reduce amyloid buildup](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25125475), resulting in improved memory. \n\nResearch also suggests that CBD can help with reducing inflammation caused by microglial cells. Microglial cells in the brain “clean up” debris in neurodegenerative disorders, but there’s a caveat: The cleaning actions of microglia can be detrimental to surrounding cells. In patients with Parkinson’s disease, activated microglia are often found near dying, dopamine-producing cells.\n\nResearchers think that controlling this microglial action could have neuroprotective benefits. A study in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease suggests that [CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties weaken the actions of these microglial cells](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17592514).\n\nAnd lastly, studies in rats have also shown that CBD is neuroprotective. According to a study published in 2007, [CBD protected brain cells that projected into the substantia nigra](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17672854)—the part of the brain that’s affected in Parkinson’s disease and other neurological diseases. \n\nWhile these preclinical studies show much promise in developing effective treatments for Parkinson’s disease, much more work needs to be conducted—especially trials that have large sample sizes and clear objectives. Most of the moves include progressions to suit different levels of strength—Jamel encourages Parkinson’s patients to further modify any move to match their level of fitness. \r\n\r\nThe exercises focus on building core strength and improving stability, coordination and balance. Have a look at our how-to video featuring Jamel as he takes two folks, Kevin and Jerry, both living with the disease, through each of the moves.\r\n\r\n### 6 Moves to Help Improve Core & Balance in Parkinson’s Disease Patients\r\n\r\n`embed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAT4KHFBbVE?t=22s`\r\n\r\nStart with a warm-up that includes dynamic stretching to help warm up the core and open up the joints—specifically, the ankles, knees, hips and shoulders.\r\n\r\n### 1. Plank\r\n\r\nGet into a push-up position, feet hip-width apart and hands about shoulder-width apart. Keep your abs engaged and glutes firing—looking down, but with chin off the chest; head, neck and shoulders in line. Hold this position for 15–30 seconds (depending on your ability) and then slowly lower your body to the ground. Push yourself back up and repeat 2 more times for a total of 3 reps.\r\n\r\n**Progression:** With a partner, get into a push-up position a couple of feet apart, facing each other. Tap opposite hands—playing “patty cakes”—alternating on each side for a total of 5 taps with each hand. Keep hips square towards the ground and prevent your body from twisting as you tap hands. Repeat 2 more times, resting in between, for a total of 3 sets.\r\n\r\n**Modification:** If full push-up is too challenging, try this move with your knees on the ground.\r\n\r\n**Purpose:** Build core stability and strength.\r\n\r\n### 2. Farmer’s Carry\r\n\r\nWith your body aligned and neck relaxed, hold one heavy kettlebell (or a dumbbell) at your side. Maintain good posture, keeping a stable spine and shoulders away from ears. Walk 20 steps forward, turn and walk 20 steps back. Repeat on the other side.\r\n\r\n**Progression:** Hold one kettlebell directly over your shoulder in the overhead position, keeping your other arm by your side. Walk 20 steps forward, turn and walk 20 steps back. Switch sides. Repeat for a total of 2 sets.\r\n\r\n**Advanced Progression:** Keeping body aligned, hold kettlebells (or dumbbells) in both hands overhead, walk 20 steps forward and back. Repeat for a total of 2 sets.\r\n\r\n**Purpose:** Improve posture and balance; build core stability; promote strong, fluid bipedal locomotion. \r\n\r\n### 3. Standing Single-Leg Raises\r\n\r\nWhile standing with a stable spine and shoulders down and back, raise your arms out by your sides, then lift one leg off the floor in front of you to a 90-degree angle. Lower your leg slowly to the floor and repeat for a total of 10 times while bracing your core. Switch sides and do 10 reps with the other leg, trying to maintain balance and stability.\r\n\r\n**Progression:** Hold a dumbbell in each hand and do a bicep curl each time you raise and lower your leg according to the basic description above. Do this 10 times with each leg. \r\n\r\n**Advanced Progression:**  Hold a dumbbell in each hand and do 10 bicep curls while holding your leg in the 90-degree position, maintaining balance and stability. Repeat on the other side.\r\n\r\n**Purpose:** Improve balance; strengthen core and upper body.\r\n\r\n### 4. Superman\r\n\r\n**Kneeling Superman:** While maintaining a neutral spine, kneel on all fours with your hands under your shoulders and your knees under your hips. Reach your right arm forward and your left leg back, keeping your core tight and a straight line from head to toe. Keep hips square towards the ground and prevent your body from twisting as you lengthen. Lower your arm and leg and repeat on the other side. Do this on each side 5 times.\r\n\r\n**Progression—Superman:** Lie face down, neck relaxed, on your stomach with arms and legs fully extended. Lift your arms and legs up towards the ceiling, as if you’re flying, opening up your chest (lifting it off the ground) and arching your back while keeping your torso on the ground. Hold for a few seconds and slowly lower back down. Repeat for a total of 10 reps.\r\n\r\n**Purpose:** Build and strengthen core and spinal stability.\r\n\r\n### 5. Agility Ladder Drills\r\n\r\n**Hopscotch In-Out Drill:** Stand with feet hip-width apart at the bottom of the ladder. Hop into the first square with both feet, then hop out with both feet on the outside of the second square. Hop back into the third square with both feet, then hop out with both feet on the outside of the fourth square. Repeat this pattern until you reach the end of the ladder.\r\n\r\n**Toe-Tap Drill:** Stand to the left side of the first square, feet at a 90-degree angle to the length of the ladder. Tap the toes of your left foot into the first square and return it back to the outside of the ladder, then quickly tap your right toes into the first square and return your foot back. Continue down the side of the ladder, tapping first your left, then your right toes into each square in quick succession.\r\n\r\n**In-In Out-Out Drill**: Stand with feet hip-width apart at the bottom of the ladder. Step into the first square with your left foot and immediately follow with your right foot. Step back out of the square with your left foot and follow with your right foot. Repeat this pattern, advancing to the second, third and fourth squares, until you reach the end of the ladder.\r\n\r\nDo all 3 drills once as fast _and_ as accurately as possible, with a short rest in between each.\r\n\r\n**Purpose:** Improve coordination and balance; promote cardiovascular endurance.\r\n \r\n### 6. Surrenders\r\n\r\nOn a soft surface, start in a kneeling position and raise your arms out by your sides. Lift your right foot up and plant it in front of you, then bring your left foot forward to stand up, pressing through your heels. Bring your left knee down followed by your right knee so that you’re kneeling, making sure to keep your chest up, torso and pelvis aligned. Start the next rep by leading with your left foot, then following with your right. Complete 3 sets of 10 reps.\r\n\r\n**Progression:** Holding a dumbbell in each hand overhead, complete the basic exercise as described above. Complete 3 sets of 10 reps.\r\n\r\n**Purpose:** Focus on deceleration of the lunge to improve balance and build core stability and strength.\r\n\r\nAs with any fitness program, finish off with a cool-down that includes stretching all of the main muscle groups.\r\n\r\n“To move well is to live well,” says Jamel. Therefore, a diet rich in antioxidants and aimed at reducing inflammation may be beneficial to Parkinson’s patients. She adds that it took her about a month or so for the tincture to build up in her system. “People take [CBD] and think they are going to feel good right away—it’s not like that,” she says. \r\n\r\n### Marijuana Can Help Parkinson’s Patients Sleep\r\n\r\nGetting adequate sleep is an essential component to any healthy lifestyle, and people with Parkinson’s disease often suffer from insomnia due to many factors, including pain, side effects from medications, and psychological issues such as anxiety and depression. \r\n\r\n“I don’t know anyone with Parkinson’s disease who doesn't have sleeping issues,” says Jan. “Sleep is more important than anything...It restores and revamps your body. If you can take something natural to help you sleep—that’s key.”\r\n\r\nPreliminary research suggests that [cannabidiol (CBD) can help treat insomnia, while tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can help you fall asleep faster](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs11920-017-0775-9), though the latter may also have an effect on the quality of sleep. She’s even attended a Qigong retreat for Parkinson’s patients, saying that it was both comforting and inspiring to see so many people changing the narrative of what it’s like to live with Parkinson’s disease. \r\n\r\n### Cannabis Can Help Maintain Mental Health in Parkinson’s Patients\r\n\r\nThe visible symptoms of Parkinson’s disease—pain, rigidity and difficulty moving—often overshadow the mental health issues that some patients face. Jan has firsthand experience with this, saying, “With diseases like this…there’s no cure; it’s so easy to get depressed.” \r\n\r\nThe endocannabinoid system is known to be involved in the stress response, and a 2007 study by McGill University found that [low doses of THC could act as an effective antidepressant](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/10/071023183937.htm) in animal models. She’s dedicated to healthy living—finding a way to wind down after a long day is important for her mental health, she says. She also emphasizes the importance of being open-minded and having a positive outlook. For Jan, cannabis helps with all of these aspects.  \r\n\r\n“My most relaxed state comes from THC because it takes me out of my day and out of my head. I’m not good at relaxing, so smoking marijuana at night lets me mellow out,” she says.\r\n\r\n### Holistic Living Is a Commitment When It Comes to Managing Parkinson’s Disease\r\n\r\nBoth Liz and Jan make one thing clear: For Parkinson’s patients to truly see improvements with a holistic approach, they must make a commitment to living a healthy lifestyle.\r\n\r\n“There is no push button fix,” says Liz. “You have to eat well, you have move well, and you have to sleep well—you have to do all three. Any time you take one of those components out, that’s when your body starts shutting down.”\r\n\r\nJan agrees and goes on to say that cannabis can only do so much—embracing healthy living is key, and cannabis is only one part of the puzzle. \r\n\r\n“It’s a combination—you have to do everything. I feel like I’m getting stronger every day. As these nerve cells die, protein bundles begin to build up inside of them, further compounding the disease. \r\n\r\nTo find a cure—or at least slow down the disease’s progression—researchers are taking a closer look at the endocannabinoid system (ECS). This is because studies indicate that this system plays an all-important role in the basal ganglia—the part of the brain that houses the substantia nigra and controls movement. What this suggests is that the ECS plays a key role in basal ganglia processes—or the control of voluntary motor movement. \r\n\r\nResearch on the ECS began with the detection of the CB1 receptor in 1988. Since then, scientists have explored how intertwined this receptor is in bodily processes, especially those involving movement. CB1 is the most abundant receptor in the brain, especially in the basal ganglia where it controls the release of neurotransmitters GABA and glutamate.\r\n\r\nGlutamate is the most prevalent neurotransmitter in vertebrates—its main job is to excite nerve cells. GABA keeps glutamate in check—an inhibitory neurotransmitter, it reduces excitability in nerve cells and also controls muscle tone. Researchers think that certain abnormalities observed in Parkinson’s disease patients may be due to the ECS trying to compensate for the loss of dopamine in the basal ganglia. \r\n\r\n### What Happens to the ECS in Parkinson’s Disease? \r\n\r\nPost-mortem analysis and research involving animal models have shown that the ECS is significantly altered in Parkinson’s patients. In the early stages of Parkinson’s disease, CB1 receptors are less abundant and less active in comparison to healthy individuals. The loss of these receptors may make the basal ganglia more vulnerable: CB1 receptors are involved in inhibiting glutamate release, so loss or damage to these receptors can increase glutamate levels leading to excitotoxicity, or excessive stimulation of nerve cells, which leads to further damage to these cells.  \r\n\r\nA common, unifying trend that researchers have seen in Parkinson’s patients—regardless of disease progression—is an increase in AEA. And in moderate to advanced stages of the disease, where symptoms like tremors and rigidity affect Parkinson’s patients, there’s an increase in CB1 receptor density and activity. Both of these findings lend credence to the hypothesis that over-activity plays a role in neurodegenerative diseases. \r\n\r\n### Can Cannabis Bring the Endocannabinoid System Back Into Balance? \r\n\r\nCannabis may help relieve the unwanted motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, but it also shows promise in disease treatment. Given these findings, it’s not surprising that cannabis, which contains both receptor agonists and antagonists [improved motor symptoms in a small open label study](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/260682593_Cannabis_Medical_Marijuana_Treatment_for_Motor_and_Non-Motor_Symptoms_of_Parkinson_Disease_An_Open-Label_Observational_Study) involving Parkinson’s disease patients who smoked cannabis. \r\n\r\nWhile there are no current studies involving cannabis and its ability to reduce protein buildup in Parkinson’s disease patients, preliminary studies point to a link between the buildup of these proteins and the ECS. This link, as well as studies that show cannabis can decrease the accumulation of other proteins—such as amyloid clumps—in other neurodegenerative diseases, suggests that marijuana holds therapeutic potential.\r\n\r\n“The most promising aspect of cannabis to help Parkinson's patients, as well as any other neurodegenerative disease, lies in the plant’s anti-inflammatory properties, which impart nerve protection and possible reduction of amyloid buildup in brain cells,” says Dr. Perry Solomon, HelloMD’s chief medical officer. \r\n\r\nDr. Solomon points to lab research where [THC removed and reduced accumulation of amyloid clumps](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/06/160629095609.htm) that were harming nerve cells. Based on these findings, compounds that bind to CB2 could help reduce neuronal inflammation in Parkinson’s and other neurodegenerative diseases. \r\n\r\nExisting Parkinson’s therapies only relieve symptoms or supply the body with dopamine—none address the destruction of dopamine-producing neurons, which is the root cause of the disorder. Here, cannabis’s neuroprotective properties show much promise:  \r\n\r\n* In a mice cell culture, researchers found that [THC and THCA can protect the brain cells that make dopamine from neurotoxins](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22571976). In addition, [tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) has been shown to have further neuroprotective properties](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22236282) in a study that involved a human cell culture. \r\n\r\n* Cannabidiol (CBD) is also neuroprotective, but likely by way of a different mechanism than seen in THC. In rats, [CBD was found to protects brain cells that project into the substantia nigra](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17672854)—the part of the brain that’s affected in patients with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological diseases. \r\n\r\nThe ECS is an integral part of basal ganglia processes. The disruption of dopamine levels in the body likely leads the ECS to compensate, thereby affecting your body’s internal equilibrium—also known as homeostasis. Cannabinoids have shown promise in helping bring this system back into balance.\r\n\r\nHowever, as with most topics involving cannabis, more research is needed to better understand how the ECS functions in the presence of this disease. As such, I would recommend that you seek high-CBD strains.\n\nACDC is a hybrid strain that I have touted for several conditions which would benefit from a high CBD and low THC content. But in the last decade or so, a number of studies conducted in the U.S., Israel and Europe have focused on the role of the endocannabinoid system in promoting dopamine activity as a way to explore the effects of cannabis on Parkinson’s disease. Now a wellness consultant, she turned to cannabis as part of a passionate commitment to natural alternatives for managing her symptoms. In the substantia nigra, there are nerve cells that normally produce dopamine, a neurotransmitter that regulates mood, behavior, sleep and cognition. In Parkinson’s disease patients, these cells become damaged and stop their production of dopamine—causing the body’s normal operations to go awry. \r\n\r\nParkinson’s disease is a chronic and progressive disorder, which means symptoms change and worsen overtime. Because early-stage symptoms such as insomnia and constipation often seem minor, Parkinson’s usually isn’t diagnosed until the disease has progressed significantly.\r\n\r\nOnce 60–80% of dopamine-producing nerve cells are damaged, patients begin to experience difficulty controlling movement; tremors and limb rigidity are often the most visible symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, but because dopamine regulates many facets of behavior, patients can also experience less visible symptoms like depression, anxiety and difficulty thinking. The rate of progression in the disease varies from patient to patient, and while Parkinson’s doesn’t often lead to death, loss of motor control and mental impairments can reduce quality of life and put the patient’s life in danger. \r\n\r\nThe cause of Parkinson’s disease is still largely unknown, though research suggests that genetic and environmental factors play a role. Every individual experiences Parkinson’s differently, and lifestyle changes can determine how well patients cope with this disease.\r\n\r\n### Who’s Most Affected With Parkinson’s Disease? \r\n\r\nParkinson’s disease is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases in the United States, second only to Alzheimer’s. According to the [Davis Phinney Foundation](https://www.davisphinneyfoundation.org) Parkinson’s disease affects one to one-and-a-half million Americans—that’s more than the number of Americans with multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and Lou Gehrig’s disease combined—with 50,000–60,000 new cases being reported annually. Around the world, it’s estimated that seven to 10 million people are living with Parkinson’s, but none of these numbers take into account people who are experiencing symptoms but have yet to be diagnosed. \r\n\r\nParkinson’s disease affects about 1% of people over age 60, although most people living with Parkinson’s are older than 65. This disease is one-and-a-half times more common in men, with about 60% of those affected being male. In rats, CBD [protects brain cells that project into the substantia nigra](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17672854)—the part of the brain that’s affected in Parkinson’s disease and other neurological diseases. \r\n\r\nThe extensive reports of positive patient experiences combined with promising pre-clinical research has led scientists and patients to advocate for more in-depth studies on what role cannabis can play in this debilitating disease. \r\n\r\n### How Does Marijuana Complement Traditional Therapies in Parkinson’s Disease? \r\n\r\nConventional therapeutic approaches to Parkinson’s disease usually involve a combination of surgery and medications to address symptoms and supply the body with dopamine. However, patients can undertake a number of lifestyle changes to improve their quality of life. Research and experts in this disease advocate for sleeping well, eating well and engaging in regular exercise—all of which cannabis can help support. \r\n\r\nGetting adequate sleep is an essential component to any healthy lifestyle, but people with Parkinson’s often suffer from insomnia due to many factors, including pain, side effects from medications, and psychological issues such as anxiety and depression. Because Parkinson’s is a progressive disease, even if you were to find a cannabis regimen that worked for you, you may discover that as the disease changes, so will your needs in terms of cannabis dosage. \r\n\r\n[Liz Rudner](https://www.hellomd.com/people/57aa64a72bf1bd000ba8922e/lizrudner), a holistic wellness expert who works with Parkinson’s patients and the co-founder of MoonMan’s Mistress, a company that produces healthy edibles, says she’s found that her clients need a solid 10 mg of THC daily, along with 15–25 mg CBD. She also notes that CBD tends to help her clients find daytime relief. However, she also emphasizes that every person’s biochemistry is different. \r\n\r\n“This might work for you, but it might not work for the next person—or this might work for you right now, but you might get to a point where your body doesn't want anymore, and you're going to have to find something else,” she says. \r\n\r\nThe general rules of cannabis dosing apply to this disease: Start small and increase until the desired effect is achieved. If you’re looking for immediate relief from a certain symptom, smoking or vaping brings about effects more quickly. Jan has chosen to follow a holistic route for her treatment of Parkinson’s, rather than more traditional western pharmaceutical methods. Through a combination of dietary change, exercise, natural supplements, and cannabis, Jan has found relief from her Parkinson’s related symptoms and hopes to slow the progression of the disease. She is also a passionate Wellness Consultant, helping others to learn about the potential benefits of cannabis for Parkinson's and other conditions.\r\n\r\n### What were your initial symptoms?\r\n\r\nI was diagnosed with Parkinson’s  when I was 45 years old. My mom, my sister, and I all have genetic Parkinson’s Disease. My mom was diagnosed at age 60. My sister is one year older than I and she was diagnosed at age 44. I had noticed that I was holding my arm funny. My right arm was straight out and not swinging while walking, so I called my sister and asked her if her arm did this funny thing where it just doesn't move. She said, “Oh you’re holding the invisible purse,” and this same stiff arm was one of her first symptoms as well. We then all went to the website 23 and Me (a genetic testing site) and ultimately found we all have the gene Lrrk2. Once we were all identified with the particular gene, we did a bunch of studies through UCSF, Stanford, and Sunnyvale Parkinson’s Institute. Genetic Parkinson’s hasn't become very evident until lately, so we are considered a unique case. \r\n\r\n### How did Parkinson’s affect your daily life?\r\n\r\nI am a pretty healthy person, so I wasn’t sure in the beginning if it would affect me at all. My mother and sister each are having their own individual journey, so I was pretty sure mine would be different as well. My sister started western meds and eventually had two brain surgeries, called deep brain stimulation (DBS). They put a pole in your head and a battery in your chest that allows for the stimulation of the production of dopamine. My sister had that done on both sides. My mother also had that surgery at 78 years old. Deep brain stimulation surgery really works for tremors and the movement symptoms because it stimulates the dopamine production. \r\n\r\nTremors are not my biggest issue though, my issue is really stiffness and rigidity in the way that I walk and drag my leg. I also can’t move my hand very well. I don’t have a resting tremor but when I try to use my hand it tremors. I just do everything with my left hand now because my right hand doesn’t signal to move properly, along with my right leg. In order to even get the deep brain stimulation surgery, you need to be on levodopa/carbidopa to make sure that dopamine actually helps the symptoms.  I have opted to not take western drugs for now, but I would also not be opposed if I felt it would improve my quality of life.  My neurologist told me, “the drugs do nothing to slow or stop the progression of the disease”.  However, they can apparently help with symptoms. \r\n\r\n### Was cannabis your first choice for treatment?\r\n\r\nCannabis wasn’t my first choice. I didn't know much about it six years ago. I read Grain Brain and learned how grain is bad for your brain function, so I made some dietary changes. I cut wheat out of my diet and I take antioxidants like green tea, blueberries and turmeric to keep my immune system strong.  I also exercise every day. I am a trained yoga practitioner and I’m also a trained Ayurveda practitioner. I knew a lot about health, nutrition, and exercise, so I worked to do everything naturally. \r\n\r\nI also tried a form of natural dopamine, which is made from mung beans called Mucuna Pruriens. Western pharmaceutical companies traditionally use Sinemet for Parkinson’s. Sinemet is made of Levodopa Carbidopa, which helps your body get the dopamine through the blood brain barrier.  Alternative medicine practitioners have developed a protocol with amino acids that gets the dopamine in you, and through the blood brain barrier without making you sick, but unfortunately it made me very sick. I tried it for a year and it did help with my symptoms a bit, but it made me nauseous all of the time so I stopped doing it. That’s when I started taking CBD tinctures. A friend told me about CBD tinctures and how they might help me, and I have been doing so ever since. \r\n\r\n### When did you first consider medicinal cannabis? \r\n\r\nIt was through the friend who recommended it. Then I immediately began doing research. We had a family friend of ours who was featured through United Patients Group. You can watch a video of his story, Stan Rutner, who was basically dying of cancer. As a last resort they gave him CBD oil and the results were amazing. My mom had sent me this video, so I called his daughter to talk to her about it. She was the person who got me the first information on what to take and how. I started meeting more and more people that gave me information on medicinal cannabis. The first tincture I used was a CBD tincture by Care by Design. \r\n\r\n### Do you use CBD and THCA?\r\n\r\nNow, I’m actually taking CBDA and THCA, they are both non-psychoactive. I micro dose both throughout the day. I take three doses a day about an hour before each meal. The product I take is made by a company called Alta Botanicals. I am working on a cannabis protocol with Alta Botanicals for Parkinson’s to get the [endocannabinoid system](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system) stimulated and working again. \r\n\r\n### How are you trying to help other patients?\r\n\r\nAlta Botanicals and I are trying various methods on me to see what works best with Parkinson's. I am working hard to stick to a protocol, which is easy to do because the medicine is so simple to take. We’re are observing what is going on and ultimately, we would love to be able to cure this disease and help other people with this disease. That’s the goal, of course, to help people get better. \r\n\r\n### How has using cannabis changed your day to day life?\r\n\r\nCannabis gives me some relief from my symptoms. When you have Parkinson’s, you lose your sense of taste and smell, your body kind of freezes up. You don’t have the same senses that you normally would because you lose your dopamine, which can also cause apathy and depression. CBDA and the THCA have actually brought back my sense of taste and smell. My physical senses, like my touch and feel, have also come back. \r\n\r\nWith Parkinson’s you tend to lose your connection between body and mind because of the lack of dopamine, but now I am much more aware of my body mind connection than I was before. I am still limping quite a bit and I still have trouble with my right hand. It’s hard, it is definitely still hard. I think if I keep building cannabis up in my system it will get better.  There are definitely some days when I just want to say screw it and go on western meds and get rid of my symptoms, but the western meds don’t do anything to slow or stop the disease, they just mask the symptoms. With cannabis, we can actually do something to slow the disease because of the connection between Parkinson’s and the endocannabinoid system. There are also a lot of side effects to the western pharmaceuticals, which I want to try to avoid. \r\n\r\n### What would you want other people to know about cannabis?\r\n\r\nI went to a woman’s cannabis party hosted by [Octavia Wellness](http://octaviarosewellness.com/), where I was able to meet many people in the industry. That was my first experience where I felt like I had something to share and people really related to it and listened. I want people to know how acceptable it is to use cannabis and how I am carrying on with a regular job, a regular life, and I have an eleven-year old child. It’s not scary and there’s nothing taboo about it. I want people to know we can do this without being “high”. The benefits of CBD are profound, the information about the benefits of CBD are spreading by leaps and bounds every day. I am committed to supporting people to heal.\r\n\r\nIronically, that first Octavia Wellness party has opened a pathway for me to help other people.  I actually have teamed up with the founder, Carrie Tice and for the past year we have worked on creating a great platform to allow for people like me to be able to become trained in cannabis and become Wellness Consultants. Everyone has people in their personal network who are interested in learning about cannabis- and they may not feel comfortable going to dispensaries - we have solved this by making the process personal.  We are passionate about giving people safe and legal access to trusted information and products.  It's quite empowering!\r\n \r\n### Does the stigma attached to cannabis have merit?\r\n\r\nCannabis can be recreational and I have nothing against recreational cannabis. Sometimes having some THC at night helps me sleep. The benefits we get from the whole, healing plant, if we use it responsibly, are endless. Marijuana is a natural anti-inflammatory; it is a better anti-inflammatory than ibuprofen or anything like that. I’ve heard many lectures about the benefits of cannabis for PTSD, cancer, and many other conditions. I believe all illnesses are caused by some form of inflammation, and cannabis works to alleviate that. If we can get rid of the inflammation, have a healthy attitude, healthy diet, and exercise, we can avoid a lot of illnesses. Cannabis can’t do it alone, but neither can any pharmaceuticals.
