And just like in humans, finding the right dose of CBD for your pet can be a challenge. \n\nMost CBD pet products come with recommended dosages based on the animal’s body weight. And while it’s important to take the manufacturer’s suggestions into consideration, remember that just like humans, every pet is different.  \n\n### Just Like Humans, Every Mammal Has Its Own Endocannabinoid Tone \n\nWithin all mammals is a network of receptors called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). CBD can influence this system to bring about a host of therapeutic effects and promote overall good health. \n\nThe ECS has many components: \n\n* Cannabinoid receptors\n* Endocannabinoids, which are substances made by the body that attach to cannabinoid receptors \n* Enzymes, which breakdown endocannabinoids \n\nEndocannabinoid tone is a term for the state of your ECS—it’s a reflection of how all of these components interact to bring about balance within the body. This tone also includes the levels of endocannabinoids in your body, the rate at which they’re made and broken down, as well as the density of ECS receptors in your brain.\n\nThe ECS works to keep your body in a balanced state, so when it falters, a whole host of problems can occur. \n\nLow endocannabinoid tone is often associated with a lower pain threshold, as well as problems with:\n\n* Mood\n* Sleep \n* Digestion\n\nOn the flip side, a high endocannabinoid tone tends to be related to conditions like obesity and diabetes. \n\nEndocannabinoid tone doesn’t necessarily correlate with weight. This isn’t wrong—remember there isn’t one correct answer at this point. But there are other factors that you should consider when trying to figure out your pet’s CBD dosage, like: \n\n* The issue you’re trying to address\n* Consumption method \n\nThese things can play a factor in how much CBD is best for your pet’s needs.\n\nWe’re still not sure what amounts of CBD are best for specific conditions, but research is currently underway. Generally, edibles, like treats, tend to have lower bioavailability than tinctures. Bioavailability describes the amount of CBD that’s available for the body to use. \n\nIn humans, edibles are thought to have a bioavailability of around 4–12% of the original dose of CBD, whereas tinctures have a bioavailability of around 50–75%. \n\nIf your pet prefers taking CBD in treat form and you’re not seeing much of an improvement in their condition, you may want to consider upping their dosage because of the low bioavailability of edibles. \n\nJust like in humans, finding the right dose for your pet may take some time and will depend on their individual endocannabinoid tone as well as other factors. A Chihuahua with anxiety may need more CBD than a Great Dane who’s suffering from itchy skin. \n\nJust like with people, the best way to figure out your pet’s dose is to start low and go slow. Dietary CBD Can Help Improve Eyesight & Alleviate Glaucoma Symptoms\n\nHuman eyes are pretty similar to other mammals’ eyes, including that of our pets. Light travels into the eye through the cornea, then moves through the lens and the pupil where the light is focused on the retina. The retina then passes that visual information to the brain via the optic nerve. \n\nGlaucoma is a common eye condition in pets and humans. It’s when pressure builds up on the eye, eventually damaging the optic nerve—meaning the brain never receives any of the necessary visual information. \n\nThere’s no cure for glaucoma, but there are treatments that reduce pain and drain excess fluid that add to ocular pressure. Our focus has always been on holistic health and wellness for animals, and we’re still going strong after 15 years.\n\n### Why did you decide to launch a line of pet supplements made of cannabidiol (CBD) derived from hemp? \n\n**HH:** We began selling a line of CBD treats for dogs at Holistic Hound about four years ago and customers consistently shared positive feedback on the great results they were having with their animals. We get consistent customer feedback that our products are more effective than others they’ve tried, and I believe that this is due to this powerful combination. \n\n### What are the most common reasons pet owners typically seek out CBD pet supplements? \n\n**HH:** Most commonly, we see people using CBD to help reduce:\n\n* anxiety\n* inflammation\n* pain\n* seizures\n* chronic illness \n\n### In your experience, what pet conditions see the most efficacy when using CBD?\n\n**HH:** It’s easiest to witness a reduction in anxiety and pain, but we have hundreds of testimonials citing the many other benefits. \n\n### You use the term PCR hemp oil instead of CBD. Why? \n\n**HH:** CBD has been the term commonly used for products containing cannabidiol. However, CBD is only one of the many beneficial cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. If you have a very food-motivated dog, it might be easier to dose them with a bite as they’re very palatable. Some find the tinctures easier and more effective. The active ingredients also vary between products.\n\nAll of our bites also contain our blend of five organic certified mushrooms; one of our five PCR tincture varieties contains Chaga mushroom extract while the others don’t. Results will be better for both if given on an empty stomach, or away from other food. \n\n### How does your product stand out when placed next to your competitors? \n\n**HH:** There are many CBD products on the market right now, but they aren’t all of the same quality. We use only the highest-quality ingredients, including organic, full-spectrum, phytocannabinoid-rich oil; certified, organic medicinal mushrooms; pasture-raised chicken; grass-fed lamb liver; and more. We also provide third-party testing and transparency throughout. \n\n### Is CBD derived from hemp comparable to CBD that comes from the cannabis marijuana plant? What’s the difference?\n\n**HH:** Our plants are a hybrid and not unlike marijuana, but they meet the legal definition of hemp by containing less than 0.3% THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). While some people believe products derived from marijuana are superior, I’m not aware of any studies that exist confirming that, and we have strong anecdotal evidence that hemp products are extremely effective.\n\nWhile cannabis-derived products can currently only be legally sold in licensed dispensaries in the states where the plants are cultivated, products that are derived from hemp can be sold online and at traditional retail outlets in all 50 states, making them both an effective and more accessible option. \n\n### What hemp-derived products do you like and why?\n\n**HH:** I like any hemp-derived products of all varieties: tinctures, edibles or bites, salves, capsules and more. Choosing one just depends on the particular condition and what works best for each individual person or animal. \n\n### Can anyone from anywhere purchase Holistic Hound CBD products?\n\n**HH:** Yes, most people in the U.S. can purchase Holistic Hound products freely either in their local store or online. However, there are still some legal challenges within some states and/or local municipalities, so even though we believe our products to be fully legal under the Farm Bill of 2014, some restrictions do exist. Although we’d love to sell internationally, due to current regulations we can’t sell Holistic Hound products outside of the United States. \n\n### Do you have advice for anyone who wants to purchase CBD derived from hemp for their pets?\n\n**HH:** If you’re considering purchasing a hemp-derived CBD product, it’s important to do your own research to determine the quality of each individual product. Holistic living is becoming mainstream, and as we start to look at our health differently, it’s only natural that we begin to do the same with our dogs and cats—they’re family after all.\r\n\r\n“Think about your pet's health care in the same scope that you would ideally think about your own: It's about getting clean [foods], getting exercise and really just enjoying life,” says Gary Richter, an integrative veterinarian, owner of two clinics in the San Francisco Bay Area: [Montclair Veterinary Hospital](http://www.montclairvethospital.com/) and [Holistic Veterinary Care](http://www.holisticvetcare.com/); and the author of [_The Ultimate Pet Health Guide_](https://www.drgaryrichter.com/).\r\n\r\nAccording to Dr. Richter, the best thing you can do to ensure that your pet is happy and healthy is to take a preventative and holistic approach to their care. If your dog or your cat is eating badly, it’s going to be extremely difficult for the body to function properly and protect itself against disease,” says Dr. Richter. \r\n\r\nAccording to Dr. Richter, the evolutionary history of dogs and cats indicates that they’re best suited to a minimally processed diet that mainly consists of fresh meats. \r\n\r\n“The only reason why dry food and canned food exists is for our convenience,” he says. The heavily processed foods our pets eat today have little to do with what’s best for them, but rather what was established by historical precedent. \r\n\r\nIt was only in the 1900s that canned food for pets began to appear in stores. During World War II, the need for tin led pet food manufacturers to develop dry dog food. The convenience and low-cost of this feeding method made it popular among pet owners—a trend that continues today. \r\n\r\n“Get [your pets] off of processed food and onto a fresh whole food diet. … That’s probably the single biggest thing that people can do [for their pet’s health],” says Dr. Richter. He adds that he’s seen a host of common problems resolve themselves by a simple change in diet. \r\n\r\n“We see this happen time and time again: We get a dog that has chronic allergies, and the people have tried every medication, and nothing really helped. … Then you put [these animals] on a fresh, whole food diet and do almost nothing else. I've seen seizures improve in dogs with diet changes—the list just goes on and on.”\r\n\r\nWith the correct nutrition, you can optimize the way your pet’s body functions, and ultimately prevent or reduce the chance of disease. \r\n\r\n### What Should I Feed My Dog or Cat? \r\n\r\nAccording to Dr. Richter, the best diet for a dog or cat is either a cooked or raw meal prepared at home—you just need to make sure that the meal you’re preparing is complete and balanced. There are a number of do-it-yourself pet cookbooks available, and Dr. Richter’s own pet health guide also contains [recipes—a few of which are also available online](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLl7lZy2s2kN7yOq8GVJcmEzqlo5OMcgSa). \r\n\r\nBut in today’s world, this type of commitment can be difficult even for our own diets, let alone for our pets. So how do you provide the best care for your furry friend without giving up your life or breaking the bank? \r\n\r\n“We try to help [our customers] understand what's good, better and best, and help them do what they can,” says Heidi Hill, owner of [Holistic Hound](https://holistichound.com/), a pet store in Berkeley, CA, that focuses on health and wellness. Heidi opened her store in 2003 and has established a name for herself in the local community as an expert in pet nutrition.  \r\n\r\n“If [people] can only afford to feed kibble, or only want to feed kibble because it's convenient and less expensive, then we help them understand how they can make it better,” she says. \r\n\r\nLike Dr. Richter, Heidi says that the best meal is a home-prepped one. But barring that, there are now many commercial pet food options that can be healthy alternatives. When discussing these options with her customers, she tends to give the types of foods available a ranking from least to most processed:\r\n\r\n1. Frozen raw or cooked food\r\n2. Freeze dried or air-dried foods\r\n3. Dehydrated foods\r\n4. Canned food\r\n5. Kibble\r\n\r\nThere are still ways to make your pet’s diet healthier, even if you opt for canned or dry foods. In the wild, dogs, cats and other animals get a lot of their water from the foods they eat—another reason why kibble isn’t the ideal diet for our furry companions. Heidi advises adding moisture to kibble in the form of bone broth or goat’s milk to help keep your pet hydrated.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, not all canned foods and kibble are created equal: Some products consist of mostly grain fillers and little meat, while others on the market are made with generic low-grade meat meals and meat by-products. These low-quality ingredients can contain animals that were euthanized or died of certain diseases. \r\n\r\nWhen buying pet food, pet parents should instead look for foods that contain mostly meat and list the specific types of meat used, like chicken, beef or pork. Overall, you should aim to buy the highest quality food that you can afford. \r\n\r\nIt’s also important to remember that feeding your pet a healthy diet isn’t an all-or-nothing proposition. You can vary your pet’s diet: Feed kibble during the day and a less-processed food at night, for example. \r\n\r\n“Most of us try to eat healthy, but every now and again you're totally having pizza for lunch—but that doesn't mean that all the other fresh food that you're eating is worthless,” says Dr. Richter. \r\n\r\n“Think about raw or cooked food, or something fresh to add [to your pet’s food],” says Heidi. “Even if it’s just a few days a week, even if it's only table scraps … Even just a little bit is better than nothing.” She also adds that variety is important. Just like in human diets, different foods provide your pet with different nutrients. \r\n\r\n### Taking a Proactive Approach to Pet Care \r\n\r\nProviding your pet with a species-appropriate diet is the best way to ensure their health, but both Heidi and Dr. Richter also stress the value of taking a preventative and integrative approach to their care. \r\n\r\nPrevention means being proactive. Regular checkups at the vet are important, as are making sure your pet is getting enough exercise, mental stimulation and training. All of these are basic components to having a pet that’s healthy both mentally and physically. \r\n\r\nAnd beyond that, if medical problems do arise, an integrative approach gives pet owners multiple ways of addressing issues, says Dr. Richter.\r\n\r\nAfter five years of practicing veterinary medicine, Dr. Richter began to notice that with some conditions, he’d often exhaust all treatment options to no avail. This led him to seek out and study alternative therapies like acupuncture, herbal medicine and chiropractic therapy.\r\n\r\nIn addition to these therapies, including supplements in your pet’s diet can be beneficial—it just depends on the individual animal. Some supplements like probiotics and fish oils have benefits for most dogs and cats by promoting gut and coat health, respectively. However, most supplements aren’t completely benign and should be taken under the guidance of a veterinarian or someone well-versed in nutritional therapies, says Dr. Richter.\r\n\r\nHe goes on to talk about an emerging field of science called nutrigenomics—or the science of how different foods can affect gene expression in the body. “With the right set of nutrients and supplements, we can take advantage of the body's natural defense system,” says Dr. Richter. “You can literally turn on and off genes in the body by adding or subtracting different food ingredients from an animal’s diet. You can decrease inflammation, improve energy and improve the body's cancer fighting ability by utilizing these systems in the body.” \r\n\r\nCannabis is a good example of an herbal therapy that could have potential in this emerging scientific field, he says. \r\n\r\n“Cannabis affects the endocannabinoid system, which is a system of neurotransmitters that literally touches just about every bodily system we have,” Dr. Richter explains. “If we can optimize or improve endocannabinoid system function, we can have global effects on the body in ways that we couldn't do in any other way. And certainly not in any way that Western medicine has an ability to do.”\r\n\r\n### Cannabis Can Help Pets, But Legal Issues Stand in the Way \r\n\r\nInterest in cannabis and how it can be applied to pet health is rising—and for good reason: Both Heidi and Dr. Richter have witnessed the plant’s benefits. But as a veterinarian, he’s prohibited by the California Veterinary Medical Board (CVMA) from recommending it—or even simply discussing it. \r\n\r\n“Unless your veterinarian is willing to buck the trend and disobey the Veterinary Medical Board, you're stuck getting medical advice either from the kid working in a pet store, the person working behind the counter at the dispensary or whatever you can find on the Internet—and frankly, that’s a recipe for disaster,” he says. \r\n\r\nTo avoid a potential disaster, Dr. Richter is [gathering signatures in support of AB 2215, a bill that would allow veterinarians to recommend cannabis for their patients](https://petitions.moveon.org/sign/allow-compassionate-use). But do the benefits humans see from cannabis extend to their animal companions too? There isn’t an easy answer just yet – tight government restrictions limit cannabis research not only for human ailments, but also for veterinary medicine.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Animals Have Endocannabinoids\n\nThe human body is equipped with an extensive network of endocannabinoid receptors – cells that respond not only to cannabis-like molecules naturally produced by the body, but also to cannabis compounds such as THC and CBD. But research in the early 1990s, when the endocannabinoid system was discovered, revealed that any animal with a backbone, which includes not only mammals but also reptiles, birds, amphibians and fish, most likely have some form of that system as well. That made it possible to create animal models for studying the effects of cannabis, and those results could be extrapolated to humans, though not necessarily to other animals.\n\nRELATED: [WHAT IS THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system)\n\nThe fact that mammals and other vertebrates in general [have endocannabinoid receptors](http://www.petmd.com/dog/general-health/can-dogs-benefit-medical-cannabis) makes it likely that animals such as dogs, cats, or horses – and even fish and birds - could benefit from cannabis treatments in ways similar to humans. And it appears that they can – but getting and using cannabis for animals becomes complicated.\n\n`embed: https://www.instagram.com/p/BYy6CKhgBSD/`\n \n\n\n### Restrictions Hamper Research and Access\n\nVeterinarians and pet people alike have reported considerable [anecdotal evidence](https://www.rover.com/blog/medical-marijuana-for-dogs/)\nthat medical marijuana can help pets suffering from conditions like arthritis, seizures and cancer. In most of those cases, someone gave a beloved pet a dose of their own medical cannabis when it seemed that no other treatments for the animal’s condition were working – and that often led to either a cure for the condition or a significant reduction of symptoms.\n\nBut it isn’t [legal](https://www.avma.org/news/javmanews/pages/130615a.aspx)\nanywhere in the US for a veterinarian to prescribe medical marijuana for pets in distress. To date, 29 states and the District of Columbia have voted to legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes. In those states, it’s possible to buy a variety of cannabis products of varying strengths with a doctor’s referral. But veterinarians are generally prohibited from making the same kind of referral for their patients under any circumstances.\n\nEven veterinarians who advocate for medical cannabis for animals acknowledge that using it can be risky. Not enough research has been done to determine exactly how compounds like THC affect various animal species, or what dosage is best for creatures of different sizes and health conditions.\n\nOne reason for this, according to some veterinarians, is that the veterinary community has been slow to take an interest in cannabis for medicinal purposes. But another reason is one that has hampered broader research on the human applications of cannabis too: tight government regulations on all aspects of studying medical applications of cannabis.\n\nThe Drug Enforcement Administration still lists marijuana as a Schedule I drug, right up there with heroin, LSD and magic mushrooms in its most restricted classification, reserved for substances with a high potential for addiction and no demonstrated medical applications. That classification makes it difficult to conduct federally funded studies to demonstrate medical applications of cannabis for both people and pets. And relatively few veterinary schools and private researchers are proposing studies of their own to advance the use of medical marijuana for pets, even though existing evidence suggests that it could have [powerful benefits](http://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/cannabis-dog-can-help/)\n\n\n### CBD Products: Marijuana or Hemp? \n\nEven though medical cannabis may be hard to come by for pets, one of its compounds isn’t. THC is the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, and its most abundant compound. But cannabidiol, or CBD, is also plentiful, and it has no psychoactive properties.  \n\nCBD is often used for treating conditions such as chronic pain, nausea and lack of appetite, and anxiety – and it’s widely available for treating animals with those conditions too. But there’s a catch. The CBD in medicinal products such as oils, salves, creams and treats that are marketed for animals comes from hemp, not from marijuana.\n\nThe marijuana plant, cannabis sativa, is home to over a hundred compounds that work together to provide its benefits. But only the buds, leaves and resin of strains that contain psychoactive THC make up what is usually understood as “marijuana.” \n\n`embed: https://www.instagram.com/p/BV2ociDgGqr/`\n\n\nHemp comes from cannabis sativa, too, but only from varieties that have no significant amounts of THC. Hemp does contain CBD, though, and that means it can be made into a variety of products that offer health benefits that are similar to those provided by true “medical marijuana.”   \n\nSome studies suggest CBD and THC work best in combination, but hemp based CBD-alone products are freely marketed and sold without the restrictions, however many consider this to be a legal gray area. The ease of selling hemp based CBD products for animals has led to an upsurge in the number of pet health outlets offering them in a variety of forms.\n\nHemp based products are easily available, but that doesn’t mean they’re all of equal value, or even [safe](https://www.projectcbd.org/claws-and-effect-use-of-medical-marijuana-for-pets). Like dietary supplements, these products are not standardized, or monitored for quality. They can contain other ingredients, some toxic, and the strength can be highly variable.  \n\n### Using Cannabis Safely For Pets\n\nCannabis medicines have been shown to help animals with many of the same conditions people have – anxiety, nausea, cancer, seizures and gastrointestinal problems, but resistance from mainstream veterinary practice and government restrictions on cannabis in general may make it hard for pet lovers to find the support and information they need to use cannabis effectively for their four legged friends.\n\nHolistic veterinarians and those experienced in complementary medicine can often offer information and guidance for the best ways to use cannabis products safely for an animal companion.
